Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host Lauren Meissner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to mini scroll, everyone.
- 0:22I fear this might be a quick one you guys.
- 0:25I am not feeling well today. I feel like I'm, I mean, I'm
- 0:29definitely getting sick. I have a very sore throat and
- 0:31I'm all achy and I'm just really hoping I don't get the flu
- 0:35before I go away. I literally just told you guys
- 0:38that I'm going to be off all of next week because I have this
- 0:41giant like professional opportunity to speak at this
- 0:45global conference, this global tech conference.
- 0:48And like there's a lot not like riding on it, but like there are
- 0:51different like partnerships and stuff involved with this.
- 0:54So like, I need to rest Thankfully, Annabelle does
- 0:59Wednesdays for me on the pod. So tomorrow I can really just
- 1:02like rest. But yes, I am not feeling the
- 1:04best. So if my energy is like not
- 1:06totally on point, that's why. All right, let's get into the
- 1:08stories for today. The first story that I have for
- 1:11you guys is I need to talk about the reheating nachos meme.
- 1:17So this is the latest phrase sweeping the online space.
- 1:21Quote UN quote like reheating nachos.
- 1:24And Annabelle was like, you need to talk about this.
- 1:27Like this is a meme that's emerging.
- 1:28And I was like, I have never even seen this before.
- 1:31I've never felt more offline. She was like, wait, you haven't
- 1:35seen the meme about like Lady Gaga reheating her own nachos
- 1:39with her new song? Or you haven't seen like Addison
- 1:41Rae's reheating Britney Spears's nachos.
- 1:43And I was like, what are you talking about?
- 1:46I literally felt 100 years old. OK, so this saying first gain
- 1:51traction on Stan Twitter as so many chronically online memes
- 1:55do. But it is seeping into other
- 1:57online communities and platforms like Reddit and TikTok now.
- 2:01Basically, reheating nachos is typically used to talk about
- 2:04someone who is emulating or copying someone else.
- 2:08Obviously, most people are using the phrase to talk about like
- 2:10celebrities or influencers. As Owen Carey writes for Know
- 2:13Your Meme quote, reheating nachos means to try and fail to
- 2:17Co opt the aura or swag of another person or one's past the
- 2:20South, Akin to how when nachos are reheated, they're usually
- 2:24soggy, less crispy, and not nearly as delicious as when
- 2:27originally cooked. In the same article, Carrie
- 2:30credits the memes origins to a clip from the reality TV show
- 2:33Baddie's West. The clip showed 1 cast member
- 2:36stun a girl eating nachos while another member looked on as she
- 2:40ate them, seemingly wanting a bite.
- 2:42From there, the term nachos started to gain popularity.
- 2:46Users would typically say X wants Y's nachos, often implying
- 2:50a sense of jealousy between the two public figures.
- 2:53But last month, this phrase took on a life of its own, with
- 2:56social media users introducing the reheating aspect of it.
- 3:00Reportedly, the first known viral use of this phrase was a
- 3:03quote Tweet about Doja Cat with the post reading quote.
- 3:07Kind of need her to reheat these nachos for the next album.
- 3:11Aside from this, there has been a lot of talk about how Lady
- 3:15Gagas new song Abracadabra reheated bad romances nachos.
- 3:20That's the example that Annabelle gave me and I was like
- 3:22I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.
- 3:25As this one tweet reads reheating bad romance nachos.
- 3:29And the microwave kind of cooked it unevenly, but most of the
- 3:32taste is still there. Another reads Gaga reheating her
- 3:36Judas nachos mixed with Alejandro chicken.
- 3:38There's also been a lot of discourse about Shakira
- 3:41reheating Beyoncé's nachos. For context, Shakira has
- 3:45recently embarked on a new tour. And her visuals, the font and
- 3:48like overall vibe of the show, it's just very similar to
- 3:51Beyoncé's his Renaissance tour. As one popular tweet reads,
- 3:55she's reheating the nachos too much.
- 3:57Unplug the microwave. These are just the in jokes that
- 4:01make the Internet a fun place. Like more of this.
- 4:05OK, the next story that I have for you guys, this is so random,
- 4:09but I saw Jen Love's post about this and I was like, you know
- 4:13what? This is actually like relevant
- 4:15and interesting. Morphe is reportedly trying to
- 4:19make a comeback in terms of influencer marketing.
- 4:23So it seems that Morphe is going back on its promise to move away
- 4:27from influencer collaborations following its bankruptcy.
- 4:31So in case you guys missed it, we covered this quite
- 4:32extensively, probably over the last like 18 months, but around
- 4:36the end of 2023. The president of Forma Brands,
- 4:40Forma Brands owns Morphy, said that following the brands
- 4:44bankruptcy, the brand direction would be product first, not
- 4:48influencer first. Obviously, you guys know Morphe
- 4:52was influencer first when it came to their marketing
- 4:55strategy. And it was all about like giving
- 4:58all the biggest influencers these huge collaborations or
- 5:01Morphe codes or whatever. And I mean, it worked, but only
- 5:04up to a certain extent because then of course, so many of the
- 5:07influencers that they collaborated with got cancelled
- 5:10and people turned on Morphe. However, just a year after the
- 5:15president said this, it seems that Morphe may be backtracking
- 5:18on that statement. So the brand after it said that
- 5:22statement, after they said that they did do a collaboration with
- 5:25Tik Toker, Meredith Duxbury, and it seemed to go well.
- 5:28So they did I think 2 collabs with her.
- 5:30And now it seems that they are going after the big influencers
- 5:35again. I mean, Meredith is huge, like
- 5:36she is a giant influencer, but it seems like they're like, OK,
- 5:39well, that went well. So maybe let's just like lean
- 5:42back in. So they have recently been doing
- 5:46some type of like influencer stuff like gifting whatever with
- 5:50Michaela Naguera and Jeffrey Starr.
- 5:54I just think the era of Morphy is over.
- 5:56I just think the PR around Morphy and how they've done
- 6:00business, I'd like obviously like Meredith's collab did well
- 6:04because it's Meredith, you know, like she has a huge following
- 6:06and stuff. And I guess that's kind of the
- 6:07point is, you know, they tried to go the product first route
- 6:11and it didn't work because nobody cared about them.
- 6:13I don't know, I just think they haven't done enough like they
- 6:16needed to have almost like I'm sure I get it in business, you
- 6:19can't just like stop, you know, to like do a rebrand.
- 6:22Like I get you have to like keep things going, but it would have
- 6:25been much more impactful if they had actually taken a proper step
- 6:29back for like even like six months and then like relaunched
- 6:33the entire brand been like we're wiping the slate clean.
- 6:36Like this is our new direction. This is our new aesthetic.
- 6:39This is what we're going for, whatever.
- 6:41That would have been so good. And I actually think that would
- 6:45have been received really well. But unfortunately they haven't
- 6:48had one of those like PR moments that they need to get the
- 6:51reputation back on track. So like, I don't, I don't know,
- 6:54but trying to extend PR and working with these like giant
- 6:59influencers who have a paper trail, a digital paper trail of
- 7:06their problematic histories. Jeffree Star, case in point, you
- 7:10know, Michaela is obviously not as problematic, but you know,
- 7:13still she's had a lot of controversies.
- 7:15Maybe they're just realizing, you know, when you work with
- 7:17influencers, that's just a risk you take in general.
- 7:19Like you're always going to have that risk that like they say
- 7:22something, they do something, something from in their past
- 7:24comes up and you know, you really can't control all of
- 7:28that. So if you're going to do
- 7:29influencer marketing, you might as well just like go for gold,
- 7:32go for the biggest ones that you can afford.
- 7:33And if they get cancelled, well, then maybe they'll deal with it
- 7:36differently than they did last time.
- 7:39I don't know. What do you guys think?
- 7:41Would you buy for Morphe? I do like some of their
- 7:43products. Like I like their brushes.
- 7:45I like their Arielle set of brushes.
- 7:47I still use those. Like I do like some of their
- 7:50products. And I understand like for the
- 7:52price point and stuff, they were quite good.
- 7:54Like some of them were quite good.
- 7:56But yeah, I don't know if they're going to be able to come
- 7:58back like reputation wise. OK, the last story that I have
- 8:02for you guys is that Kaisenat is apparently going to be launching
- 8:07a streamer. You Never City Kai Snat is one
- 8:10of the most famous Twitch streamers in the world, and now
- 8:13apparently he wants to help you become a Twitch streamer too.
- 8:18In a February 13th stream, Kai announced his plans to launch a
- 8:21streaming university quote. I'm going to rent out a
- 8:24university over a course of a weekend.
- 8:27You will be streaming university.
- 8:28OK, I'm going to rent it out. I'm going to put out enrolls and
- 8:32applications to people to enroll into the university.
- 8:35No matter if you're big, no matter if you're a smaller
- 8:37streamer, you can stream the entire weekend.
- 8:40I will get dorms. Boys will have their own shit,
- 8:43Girls will have their own shit. I'm principal, so I get to have
- 8:46my own office and all this type of shit.
- 8:48All right? And then he said that he has
- 8:51high hopes to bring in other influencers to teach certain
- 8:54courses. So he said, like Mark Rober
- 8:56teaching a class on science and Mr. Beast teaching a class on
- 8:59finance. It's not that I don't think you
- 9:01can get valuable information from creators or influencers on
- 9:05certain topics, but I just think it worries me like we are just
- 9:12in such an age of like anti intellectualism, like anti
- 9:16expert. And it worries me that this is
- 9:19going to be possibly taking place if this goes ahead,
- 9:22possibly taking place at a university.
- 9:25Obviously it does not like an official university course.
- 9:28It it's not going to be marketed like that, but still it will be
- 9:31at a university. You know, it's like that
- 9:33university experience for a weekend and you're getting all
- 9:36these courses and you're learning about important topics
- 9:41from people that are not professors in that field.
- 9:43I feel like I just, it wouldn't feel like such a big deal to me
- 9:47if we just weren't in this age where like young people and just
- 9:52people in general, but especially young people like
- 9:54don't value education or like listening to experts in the same
- 9:59way that we used to. And I feel like that is maybe
- 10:01not the vibe, but I think in general, the idea of this
- 10:05dreamer university is kind of cool.
- 10:07It kind of sounds like a temporary collab house more than
- 10:10anything. Like that's actually where I see
- 10:12the benefit could be, but this would not be the first of its
- 10:16kind. In 2023, Taylor Lorenz reported
- 10:19on the emergence of Creator camp in Katy, TX.
- 10:23The camp is for children ages 6 to 13 to learn how to be digital
- 10:27creators. And I don't think this is by any
- 10:30means the only creator Camp, but this is like the one that was
- 10:34reported on. Creator Camp was founded by a
- 10:36group of young creators who wanted to help kids quote
- 10:39develop a healthy relationship with technology, one that
- 10:42fosters creativity, critical thinking and problem solving
- 10:45skills. Attendees are taught technical
- 10:47skills like video editing, storyboarding, scripting videos,
- 10:51and of course, vlogging. And they can also use green
- 10:54screens, costumes, lighting equipment, whiteboards and iPads
- 10:57at the camp. I think the Streamer University
- 11:00would be actually really beneficial, especially because
- 11:04there is such a unique culture in streaming and there is a lot
- 11:08that can go wrong when it comes to streaming because it's live.
- 11:11You know, there's just like these unique elements to it that
- 11:15other platforms don't have, like unique problems when it comes to
- 11:19moderation swatting, like just things that happen because of
- 11:23the nature of you being live that don't necessarily translate
- 11:27all the time to other platforms. So I actually think it could be
- 11:30a really beneficial resource if it's done right, Ideally not
- 11:35with courses taught, in my opinion, in my opinion, by other
- 11:38creators, unless it's going to be about something that is like
- 11:41so creator specific. I don't know, maybe I'm just
- 11:43being a hater, you know, that I think about it, I guess like if
- 11:46you think about Mr. Beast teaching a finance class, like
- 11:48do I think he's the right person for that?
- 11:50Probably not. However, maybe there are not a
- 11:52lot of, you know, experts or professionals that would be well
- 11:57versed enough in like the actual economics or like the finance
- 12:00side of like generating income as a streamer.
- 12:03So maybe a creator is the right person to talk about that.
- 12:07But then I still feel like they would need to have like an
- 12:09accounting professor or someone like with them.
- 12:12I don't know, maybe I'm just thinking about this too much,
- 12:15but yes, that's it for the stories today, guys.
- 12:18Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 12:21Please rate, review and subscribe.
- 12:22We're trying to get to 1000 star ratings on Spotify specifically.
- 12:26And also, if you don't listen on Spotify, just leave us an Apple
- 12:29review, comment on YouTube, subscribe, all of that.
- 12:33We love you guys and Annabelle will talk to you tomorrow.
- 12:36Bye.
