• 2:50
Speaker 1: Jane, returning to the trunk.

Speaker 4: She calls him ducky.

Speaker 1: of cheap looking squibs.
• 3:18
Speaker 3: No, you carry him deadly fireworks about with you, Tyler.
• 3:23
Speaker 1: Tyler, regarding them fondly.
• 3:25
Speaker 2: Fireworks is my only dissipation. There ain't much danger unless
• 3:31
Speaker 2: anybody lunges at me.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Producing some dirty crackers from his trousers pockets and regarding
• 3:37
  Speaker 1: them with gloomy.
• 3:38
Speaker 2: Relish friction is the risky th.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: One, Jane poppitating, Oh.
• 3:44
Speaker 3: Don't, Tyler, how can he absence your anchoring?
• 3:48
Speaker 1: Tyler intensely, it's more than an anchor in a load
• 3:53
Speaker 1: to order and mellow them.
• 3:56
Speaker 2: Today they're damp, Tomorrow they're dry when the time comes
• 4:00
Speaker 2: for me. So let him off.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: Did they don't go.
• 4:04
Speaker 1: Eh, Tyler putting the fireworks away?
• 4:08
Speaker 2: Perhaps not, and it's their horrible uncertainty what I crave
• 4:12
Speaker 2: after Lift your ends, Jane.
• 4:16
Speaker 1: They take up the trunk as Gwendolen Hawkins and Ermatrude Johnson.
• 4:20
Speaker 1: Two pretty girls, the one gushing, the other haughty in manner.
• 4:24
Speaker 7: Up here in the hall, here are Miss Diout's boxes.
• 4:28
Speaker 7: She is really going today?
• 4:30
Speaker 8: I am so happy.
• 4:32
Speaker 9: What an inexpressible relief, Oh, Tyler, I'm dissatisfied with the
• 4:37
Speaker 9: manner in which my shoes are polished.
• 4:40
Speaker 7: Yes, and Tyler, you never fed my mice last night.
• 4:44
Speaker 2: It ain't my place. Birds and mice is Jane's place.
• 4:49
Speaker 7: Oh, you are in an human boy shaking Tyler, you
• 4:53
  Speaker 7: are a creature.
• 4:55
Speaker 3: Don't shoke them, mess don't shoke them.
• 4:59
Speaker 1: Peggy Heslarridge enters through the hall and comes between Tyler
• 5:03
Speaker 1: and Glendlyn. Peggy is a shabbily dressed, untidy girl with
• 5:07
Speaker 1: wild hair and inky fingers. Her voice is rather shrewish
• 5:10
Speaker 1: and her actions are jerky. Altogether, she has the appearance
• 5:14
Speaker 1: of an overwise and neglected child.
• 5:17
Speaker 6: Leave the boy alone. Gwendolen Hawkins, what has he done?
• 5:22
Speaker 7: He won't feed my darling pets, and.
• 5:25
Speaker 9: He is generally a lower order.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Go away, Tyler, Tyler and Jane, deposit the trunk in
• 5:32
Speaker 1: the hall with the other baggage and disappear.
• 5:35
Speaker 6: You silly girls, to make an enemy of the boy
• 5:39
Speaker 6: at the very moment we depend upon his devotion. It's
• 5:42
Speaker 6: just like you, Ermintrude Johnson.
• 5:45
Speaker 9: Don't you threaten me with your inky finger, Miss Heslerrigga, please?
• 5:50
  Speaker 5: Ugh.
• 5:51
Speaker 6: Haven't we sworn to help Dinah wrankling with our last breath?
• 5:55
Speaker 6: Haven't we sworn to free her from the chains of
• 5:57
Speaker 6: tyranny and oppression, and never to eat much until we've
• 6:01
Speaker 6: seen her safely and happily by her husband's side.
• 6:05
Speaker 9: Yes, but we can't truckle to a pale and stumpy boy, you.
• 6:08
Speaker 6: Know we can. We've got to. If Dinah's husband is
• 6:13
Speaker 6: ever to enter this house, we must crouch before the
• 6:16
Speaker 6: instrument who opens the door. However, short, however.
• 6:20
Speaker 1: Pasty Dinah calling outside? Are you that girls, Peggy jumping
• 6:27
Speaker 1: and clapping her hands.
• 6:29
  Speaker 6: Here's Dinah, Dinah.
• 6:32
Speaker 1: They run up to the door to receive and embrace Dinah,
• 6:35
Speaker 1: who enters through the hall. Dinah is an exceedingly pretty
• 6:38
Speaker 1: and simple looking girl of about sixteen.
• 6:41
Speaker 7: We've been waiting for you, Dinah.
• 6:43
Speaker 6: And now you're going to keep your promise to us.
• 6:46
Speaker 6: Ain't you my promise to tell us all about it
• 6:50
Speaker 6: from beginning to end?
• 6:52
  Speaker 1: Dinah bashfully, Oh, I can't.
• 6:55
Speaker 6: I don't like to you must. We've only heard your
• 6:59
Speaker 6: stone and bits. But where's miss Diet out out out?
• 7:07
Speaker 10: And where is he? Miss Diet's husband?
• 7:10
  Speaker 6: What the mystery?
• 7:12
Speaker 1: Skipping across to the left hand door and going down
• 7:16
Speaker 1: on her knees peering through the keyhole.
• 7:18
Speaker 6: It's all right, one o'clock in the day and he's
• 7:21
Speaker 6: not down yet. The imp I'd called sponge him if
• 7:25
Speaker 6: I were Miss Diet places young.
• 7:28
Speaker 1: Lady's Ermatrude sits with Dinah on the sofa, Gwendolen being
• 7:32
Speaker 1: at Dinah's feet. Peggy perches on the edge of the
• 7:35
Speaker 1: table with her feet on a chair.
• 7:39
Speaker 6: Now then, missus, what's your name? Dinah?
• 7:43
Speaker 1: Dinah drooping her eyelids.
• 7:45
Speaker 10: Pullover, missus Reginald pullover attention for missus Paulover's narrative Chapter one,
• 7:53
Speaker 10: Wilders I met him at a palsy and missus Saint
• 7:56
Speaker 10: Johnston's The Cromwell wrote he was presented to Mama in
• 8:00
Speaker 10: but Major Padgate voda.
• 8:02
Speaker 6: Thanks to Major Padgate, I wish we knew him, young ladies, well.
• 8:08
Speaker 10: About of course, and then mister Paulover, Mister Paulover asked
• 8:12
Speaker 10: me whether I didn't think the evening was rather warm.
• 8:15
Speaker 6: He soon began to rattle on. Then it was his
• 8:17
Speaker 6: conversation that attracted you. I suppose, Oh no.
• 8:22
Speaker 10: Love came very gradually. We were introduced at about ten o'clock,
• 8:25
Speaker 10: and I didn't feel really drawn to him till long
• 8:28
Speaker 10: after eleven. The next day, being Mar's at home day,
• 8:31
Speaker 10: Major Padgate brought him to tea.
• 8:33
Speaker 6: Young ladies, what is your opinion of Major Pedgate.
• 8:38
Speaker 9: I think he must be awfully considerate.
• 8:41
  Speaker 1: He's not.
• 8:42
Speaker 10: He called my Reginald a young shaver.
• 8:45
Speaker 6: That's contemptible enough. How old is your Reginald?
• 8:49
Speaker 10: He is much more senior. He was seventeen in November.
• 8:52
  Speaker 1: Well.
• 8:53
Speaker 10: The following week Reginald proposed to me in the conservatory.
• 8:56
Speaker 10: He spoke very sensibly about settling down and how we
• 8:59
Speaker 10: were not growing up younger, and how he'd seen a
• 9:01
Speaker 10: house in Park Lane which wasn't till but which very
• 9:03
Speaker 10: likely would be to that some day, and then we
• 9:06
Speaker 10: went into the drawing room and told Mamma.
• 9:09
Speaker 1: Well, well, Dinah, breaking down and putting her handkerchief to
• 9:13
  Speaker 1: her eyes.
• 9:15
Speaker 10: Oh, I shall never forget the scene.
• 9:17
Speaker 6: I never shall don't cry, Dinah.
• 9:21
Speaker 1: They all tried to console her.
• 9:23
Speaker 10: Mamma, who is very delicate, went into violent hysterics and
• 9:27
Speaker 10: tore the hearth rug with her teeth. But a day
• 9:29
Speaker 10: or two afterwards she grew a little calmer and promised
• 9:32
Speaker 10: to write to Papa, who was with a ship at Malta.
• 9:35
  Speaker 6: And did she.
• 9:36
Speaker 10: Yes, Papa, you know, is Admiral rankling his ship. The
• 9:40
Speaker 10: Pandora has never run into anything, and so Papa is
• 9:43
Speaker 10: a very distinguished man.
• 9:45
Speaker 7: And what was his answer?
• 9:48
Speaker 10: He telegraphed home one terrible word, bosh oh oh oh.
• 9:53
Speaker 6: He ought to be struck into a flying Dutchman.
• 9:57
Speaker 10: The telegraphic rate from Malta necessitates abruptness. But I can
• 10:00
Speaker 10: never forgive the choice of such a phrase. But it
• 10:03
Speaker 10: decided our fate. Three weeks ago, when I supposed to
• 10:06
Speaker 10: be selecting walls at Whiteley's, Reginald and I were secretly
• 10:09
Speaker 10: united at the Registry office.
• 10:11
  Speaker 7: Oh how lovely.
• 10:13
Speaker 9: How romantic, we declare.
• 10:16
Speaker 10: We were much older than we rarely are. But as
• 10:18
Speaker 10: Reginald said, trouble it aged us, Sir, wasn't a story.
• 10:22
Speaker 10: At the doors of the Registry office, we parted.
• 10:25
Speaker 9: How horrible I couldn't have done that.
• 10:29
Speaker 3: And when I reached.
• 10:30
Speaker 10: Home there was a letter from Papa ordering Mamma to
• 10:32
Speaker 10: have me locked up at once in a boarding school.
• 10:35
Speaker 10: And here I am torn from my husband. My letter
• 10:38
Speaker 10: is opened by Miss Diet, quite friendless and alone.
• 10:42
Speaker 6: No that you're not, Dinah. Listen to me. Miss Diet
• 10:47
Speaker 6: is going out of town today, and I'm left in charge.
• 10:50
Speaker 6: I am a poor governess, but playing jailer over bleeding
• 10:53
Speaker 6: hearts is not in my articles. And if your husband
• 10:57
Speaker 6: comes to Volumnia house and demands his wife, he doesn't
• 11:01
Speaker 6: go away without you, does he? Young ladies? No, we
• 11:06
Speaker 6: will do as we would be done by, won't we?
• 11:10
  Speaker 5: Yes?
• 11:11
Speaker 1: The street door bell is heard, the girls cling to
• 11:14
Speaker 1: each other. Oh oh, oh, Dinah, trembling. Mistet Tyler is
• 11:22
Speaker 1: seen crossing the hall. Peggy runs to the window and
• 11:25
  Speaker 1: looks out, No.
• 11:27
Speaker 6: It isn't. It's the postman, a lots of retinals.
• 11:31
Speaker 1: Tyler enters with three letters. Peggy, sweetly, anything for us,
• 11:38
Speaker 1: Tyler dear Tyler looking at the letters, which he guards
• 11:42
  Speaker 1: with one arm.
• 11:43
Speaker 2: One for Miss Dena Rangklin.
• 11:46
Speaker 1: Oh, snatching at her letter, which Tyler quickly slips into
• 11:50
  Speaker 1: his pocket.
• 11:51
Speaker 2: My older is to hand Miss Rangklin's letters to the missus.
• 11:55
Speaker 1: Handing a letter to Peggy, Miss hasslerrigg. Peggy surprised for
• 12:01
Speaker 1: me Tyler looking at the third letter.
• 12:04
  Speaker 2: Oh look here, here's a go what's.
• 12:07
Speaker 1: That Tyler dancing with delight?
• 12:11
Speaker 2: Oh, criky, this must be for him.
• 12:15
Speaker 6: Miss Diad's husband, this mystery.
• 12:20
Speaker 1: The girls gather around Tyler and look over his shoulder.
• 12:23
Speaker 1: Peggy reading the address.
• 12:26
Speaker 6: It's readdressed from the Junior Amalgamated Club Saint James.
• 12:31
Speaker 1: Street, snatching the letter from Tyler.
• 12:34
Speaker 6: Gracious, the honorable Verequiccket.
• 12:38
Speaker 7: The honorable, the honorable.
• 12:41
Speaker 2: What's that mean, young ladies?
• 12:45
Speaker 6: We have been entertaining a swell.
• 12:48
Speaker 1: Unawares, returning the letter to Tyler, take it.
• 12:52
Speaker 2: Up swell or no swell. The person who soils two
• 12:57
Speaker 2: pairs of boots per dam daily is friend of mine.
• 13:01
Speaker 1: Tyler goes out, Peggy opening her letter.
• 13:05
Speaker 6: Oh, from Dinah's Reginald No No, addressed to me, referring
• 13:13
Speaker 6: to the signature REGINALD Percy Paul over.
• 13:18
Speaker 9: Read it, Read it.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: Peggy sits on the sofa, the three girls clustering round her,
• 13:24
Speaker 1: Dinah kneeling at her feet expectantly, Peggy reading.
• 13:29
Speaker 6: Montpellier Square, West, Brompton. Dear Miss hesler Ridge, Heaven will
• 13:35
Speaker 6: reward you. The letter, wrapped round a stone, which you
• 13:38
Speaker 6: threw me last night from an upper window of Volumnia House,
• 13:42
Speaker 6: was handed to me after I had compensated the person
• 13:45
Speaker 6: upon whose head is unfortunately alighted. The news that Dinah
• 13:49
Speaker 6: has one friend in Volemnia House enabled me to get
• 13:53
Speaker 6: a little rest between half past five and six this morning.
• 13:57
Speaker 7: One friend, what about us?
• 14:00
Speaker 1: Dinah kisses them. Go on, Peggy reading.
• 14:05
Speaker 6: Not having closed my eyes for eleven nights, sleep was
• 14:09
Speaker 6: of distinct value. Now, Dear Miss Hesleridge informed Dinah that
• 14:15
Speaker 6: our apartments are quite ready. Oh oh, and that I
• 14:20
Speaker 6: shall present myself at Volumnia College to fetch away the
• 14:25
Speaker 6: dear love of my heart tonight at half past nine
• 14:29
  Speaker 6: tonight tonight.
• 14:32
Speaker 10: Oh, I've come over sot frightened.
• 14:35
Speaker 1: Tonight, waving the letter and dancing round with delight. Finish
• 14:40
Speaker 1: the letter, Peggy, resuming her seat and reading with emotion.
• 14:46
Speaker 6: Please assure Dinah that I shall love her till death,

• 15:22
Speaker 6: under which I stand is visible from the window of
• 15:25
Speaker 6: Admiral Rankling's dining room. You will know me by my faithful,
• 15:29
Speaker 6: trusty respirator. Oh I'm so excited. I wish somebody was
• 15:34
  Speaker 6: coming for me.
• 15:36
Speaker 9: I know we shall be frustrated by Jane or Tyler.
• 15:40
Speaker 6: Leave them to me. I'll manage em.
• 15:43
  Speaker 10: But there's Miss Doyt's husband.
• 15:45
Speaker 6: What Let the mysterious person who has one Miss Diat
• 15:49
Speaker 6: pause before he steps between a young bride and a bridegroom. Ladies,
• 15:55
Speaker 6: Miss Diat's husband is ours for the holidays. One frown
• 15:59
Speaker 6: from him and his dinners shall be wrecked, his wine watered,
• 16:03
Speaker 6: his cigars dampened. He shall find us, not girls but gorgans.
• 16:09
Speaker 1: A loud knock and ring are heard at the front door.
• 16:12
Speaker 1: Jane crosses the hall Ermatrude, Gwendolen and Dinah under their breath.
• 16:18
Speaker 1: Mister They quickly disappear. Peggy remains hastily concealing the letter.
• 16:27
Speaker 1: Miss Diot enters. She is a good looking, dark woman
• 16:30
Speaker 1: of dignified presence and rigid demeanor, her dress and manner
• 16:34
Speaker 1: being those of the typical schoolmistress.
• 16:36
Speaker 11: Is that Miss Hesloridge?
• 16:39
Speaker 1: Peggy demurely, yes, Miss Diat.
• 16:43
Speaker 11: How have the young ladies been employing themselves?
• 16:47
Speaker 6: I have been reading a lot to them, Miss.
• 16:49
Speaker 11: Diat is mister quit is my husband down yet?
• 16:55
Speaker 6: I've not had the pleasure of seeing him, Miss.

Speaker 11: Diat, you can join the young lady.
• 17:00
Speaker 6: Thank you, thank you, Miss diad.
• 17:03
Speaker 1: In the doorway, she waves Reginald's letter defiantly, but quickly
• 17:07
Speaker 1: disappears as Miss Diot turns round.
• 17:10
Speaker 11: No, if Vera will only remain up stairs a few
• 17:13
  Speaker 11: moments longer.
• 17:15
Speaker 1: She goes hurriedly to the left hand door, listens and
• 17:19
Speaker 1: turns the key. Then to the center door, listens again
• 17:23
Speaker 1: and appears satisfied, after which she throws open the window
• 17:27
Speaker 1: and waves her handkerchief, calling in a loud whisper.
• 17:30
Speaker 11: Mister Bernstein, Mister Bernstein, I have left the door on

  Speaker 11: the ltch.
• 17:35
Speaker 1: Come in, please, closing the window and going to the door.
• 17:40
Speaker 1: Very shortly afterwards, Otto Bernstein, a little elderly German with
• 17:44
Speaker 1: the air of a musician, enters the room.
• 17:47
Speaker 11: Thank you for following me so quickly.
• 17:50
Speaker 1: Closing the door and turning the key.
• 17:53
Speaker 12: You seem so agitated that I came after your cab

  Speaker 12: Mit another agitated.
• 18:02
Speaker 11: Yes, tell me, miserable woman that I am. Tell me
• 18:07
Speaker 11: what did I sound like at rehearsal this.
• 18:09
Speaker 12: Morning, Capital, Capital Your voice comes out rich and beautiful.
• 18:17
Speaker 12: Mark my word, you will make a hit to night.
• 18:23
Speaker 12: Have you seen your new name in the pills, the pills,
• 18:29
  Speaker 12: the blay pills.
• 18:31
Speaker 11: I should drop flat on the pavement if I did.
• 18:35
Speaker 12: He looks very fine, quoting Miss Constance Stellaporte as Queen
• 18:42
Speaker 12: Honoureen in Otto Bernstein's new gomic corpera pirete her vorst
• 18:49
  Speaker 12: appearance in London.
• 18:52
Speaker 11: Oh, how disgraceful, disgraceful to sing such melody?
• 19:00
Speaker 12: Please, no, no, Please, disgraceful. Why did you appeal to
• 19:07
Speaker 12: me three weeks ago to put you in the way
• 19:10
Speaker 12: of getting through the Christmas vacation?
• 19:14
  Speaker 1: Miss diod tearfully.
• 19:17
Speaker 11: Oh, you don't know everything. Sit down, I can trust you.
• 19:23
Speaker 11: You are my oldest friend, and we're a pupil of
• 19:26
Speaker 11: my late eminent father. Mister Bernstein, I am no longer
• 19:31
  Speaker 11: a single woman.
• 19:33
Speaker 12: Oh, I am very pleased. I wish you many happy
• 19:38
Speaker 12: returns of the no. I congratulate you.
• 19:44
Speaker 11: I am married secretly, secretly because my husband could never
• 19:49
Speaker 11: face the word of fashion as the consort of the
• 19:51
Speaker 11: proprietors of a scholastic establishment. He will gather from this
• 19:56
Speaker 11: that my husband is a gentleman.
• 19:59
Speaker 12: Hmm, so is he.
• 20:03
Speaker 11: It had been a long cherished ambition with me. If ever,
• 20:06
Speaker 11: I am married to add no one but a gentleman.
• 20:10
Speaker 11: I do not mean a gentleman in a mere parliamentary sense.
• 20:14
Speaker 11: I mean a man of birth, blood and breeding. Respect
• 20:19
Speaker 11: my confidence. I have wedded the honorable vere.
• 20:23
  Speaker 1: Cuacket Bernsteine unconcernedly.
• 20:27
Speaker 12: Ah, is he a very nice man?
• 20:32
Speaker 11: Nice mister Bernsteine, you was speaking of a brother of
• 20:37
  Speaker 11: lord Lymehouse.
• 20:39
Speaker 12: Oh am, I lord Lymehouse. Let me think he is
• 20:46
Speaker 12: very very what you call it, very popular? Just now? Yeah, yeah,
• 20:54
Speaker 12: he is in the bankruptcy courts.
• 20:57
Speaker 1: Miss Diard with pride.
• 21:00
Speaker 11: Certainly so is Harold archidecon Quackett Verir's youngest brother. So
• 21:06
Speaker 11: is Lofter's Martineau Quackett Ver's cousin. They have always been
• 21:10
Speaker 11: a very united family. But dear mister Bernsteine, you have
• 21:15
Speaker 11: accidentally probed the one I won't say fault, the one
• 21:20
Speaker 11: most remarkable attribute of these great saxon quackets.
• 21:25
Speaker 12: Oh yes, I see. You have to pay your husband's
• 21:30
  Speaker 12: little pills.
• 21:32
Speaker 11: Quite so, that is it. I have the honor of
• 21:36
Speaker 11: being employed in the gradual discharge of liabilities incurred by
• 21:40
Speaker 11: mister vere Quackett since the year eighteen seventy six. I
• 21:45
Speaker 11: am also engaged in the noble task of providing mister
• 21:48
Speaker 11: Quackett with the elaborate necessities of his present existence.
• 21:53
Speaker 12: I know now why you wanted mine help.
• 21:57
  Speaker 13: Ah.
• 21:58
Speaker 11: Yes, Volumnia, call is not equal to the grand duty
• 22:02
Speaker 11: imposed upon it. It is absolutely necessary that I should
• 22:06
Speaker 11: increase my income. In my despair facing this genial season,
• 22:10
  Speaker 11: I wrote to.
• 22:11
Speaker 12: You proposing to turn your capital voice to account.
• 22:16
Speaker 11: Eh, quite so, And suggesting that I should sing in
• 22:20
  Speaker 11: your new oratorio.
• 22:22
Speaker 12: Well you are going to do so?
• 22:25
Speaker 11: What when you have induced me to figure in a
• 22:28
  Speaker 11: comic opera?
• 22:30
Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, but I have told you I have used
• 22:34
Speaker 12: the music of my new oratorio for my new Gommy opera.
• 22:41
Speaker 11: Huh, yes, that is my only consolation.
• 22:45
Speaker 12: Will your good gentleman be in the stalls tonight.
• 22:49
Speaker 11: In the stalls at the theater? Hush, mister Bernstein, it
• 22:54
Speaker 11: is a secret from ver lest His suspicions should be
• 22:58
Speaker 11: aroused by my leaving home every evening. I have led
• 23:01
Speaker 11: him to think that I am visiting a clergyman's wife
• 23:04
Speaker 11: at Hereford. I shall really be lodging in Henrietta Street,
• 23:08
  Speaker 11: Covent Garden.
• 23:09
Speaker 12: Oh why not tell him all about it?
• 23:14
Speaker 11: Nonsense. Vere is a gentleman, He would insist upon attending
• 23:18
Speaker 11: me to and from the theater.
• 23:21
Speaker 12: Well, I should hope so.
• 23:23
Speaker 11: No, No, he is himself a graceful dancer. A common
• 23:28
Speaker 11: code of sympathy would naturally be struck between him and
• 23:31
Speaker 11: the Cory Fees. Oh, there is so much variety in
• 23:35
  Speaker 11: Vere's character.
• 23:37
Speaker 12: Well, you are a plucky woman. You deserve to be
• 23:41
Speaker 12: happy some day happy.
• 23:45
Speaker 11: Think of the deception I am practicing upon, dear vere.
• 23:49
Speaker 11: Think of the people who believe in the rigid austerity
• 23:52
Speaker 11: of Caroline Diod principle of Volumnia College. Think of the
• 23:56
Speaker 11: precious confidence reposed in me by the parents and relations
• 24:01
Speaker 11: of twenty seven innocent pupils, given average of eight and
• 24:05
Speaker 11: a half relations to each pupil. Multiply eight and a
• 24:08
Speaker 11: half by twenty seven, and you approximate the number whose
• 24:12
Speaker 11: trust I betrayed this night.
• 24:16
Speaker 12: Yes, but think of the audience you will delight tonight
• 24:20
Speaker 12: in my auditorial I mean my comic opera. Oh that
• 24:26
  Speaker 12: reminds me.
• 24:28
Speaker 1: Taking out a written paper from a pocketbook.
• 24:31
Speaker 12: Here are two new verses of the political song for
• 24:36
Speaker 12: you to commit to memory before this evening. They are
• 24:41
  Speaker 12: extremely good.
• 24:43
  Speaker 1: Miss Diod.
• 24:44
Speaker 11: Looking at the paper, mister Bernstein, surely here is a
• 24:49
Speaker 11: veiled allusion to Yes, I thought so. Oh, the unwarrantable familiarity.
• 24:56
  Speaker 11: I can't. I can't even vocally allude to a perfect
• 25:01
Speaker 11: stranger as the grand old man.
• 25:05
Speaker 12: Oh now now he won't mind that.
• 25:09
Speaker 11: But the tendency of the chorus.
• 25:12
Speaker 1: Reading doesn't he wish he may.
• 25:14
Speaker 11: Get it is opposed to my stern political convictions. Oh
• 25:20
Speaker 11: what am I coming to?
• 25:23
Speaker 1: Quackett's voice is heard, Quackett calling outside Caroline Carline.
• 25:32
  Speaker 6: He is vee.
• 25:33
  Speaker 1: Hurriedly to Bernstein.
• 25:35
Speaker 11: Goodbye, dear mister Bernstein. You understand why I cannot present.
• 25:39
  Speaker 1: You Bernsteine bustling.
• 25:43
Speaker 12: Goodbye till tonight. Mark my word, you will make a great.
• 25:48
Speaker 1: Hit, Caroline, Miss Diod unlocking the center door.
• 25:54
Speaker 11: Go let yourself out.
• 25:56
Speaker 1: Good luck to you, Miss Diod opening the door.
• 26:01
Speaker 12: Yes, yes, and success to my new auditorio. I mean
• 26:06
  Speaker 12: my comte opera.
• 26:09
  Speaker 3: Oh go.
• 26:12
Speaker 1: She pushes him out and closes the door, leaning against
• 26:14
Speaker 1: it faintly. Quackett rattling the other door, I say, Caroline,
• 26:21
Speaker 1: miss Diot calling to him, Is that my darling?
• 26:24
  Speaker 14: Vere?
• 26:26
Speaker 1: Yes? She comes to the other door, unlocks and opens it.
• 26:31
Speaker 1: Vere Quackett enters. He is a fresh, breezy, dapper little
• 26:35
Speaker 1: gentleman of about forty five, with fair curly hair, a
• 26:39
Speaker 1: small waxed mustache, and a simple boyish manner. He is
• 26:43
Speaker 1: dressed in the height of fashion and wears a flour
• 26:45
Speaker 1: in his coat and an eyeglass.
• 26:48
Speaker 11: Good morning, Caroline, good morning, how is my little pet
• 26:52
  Speaker 11: to day?
• 26:54
Speaker 1: Kisses his cheek, which he turns to her for the purpose.
• 26:57
Speaker 11: Not yeve, he is down later than usual.
• 27:00
Speaker 8: It isn't my fault. Dear, the florist was late in
• 27:03
  Speaker 8: sending my flower.
• 27:05
Speaker 1: What a shame quacket shaking out a folded silk handkerchief.
• 27:10
Speaker 8: Oh, by the bye, carry, I want some fresh perfume
• 27:13
  Speaker 8: in my bottles.
• 27:15
Speaker 11: My vear shall have it, Thank you, thank you.
• 27:21
Speaker 1: Sitting before the fire, opening the newspaper and humming a tune.
• 27:25
Speaker 8: Let me see, let me see here we are caught
• 27:30
Speaker 8: of bankruptcy before the official receiver Limehouse came up again
• 27:35
Speaker 8: for hearing yesterday. How they bother him? They bothered me
• 27:39
Speaker 8: in seventy five. Now here's a coincidence. Carry in eighteen
• 27:43
Speaker 8: seventy five. My assets were nil in eighteen eighty five,
• 27:47
Speaker 8: Dear old Bob's assets are nil. Now that's deuced funny.
• 27:52
Speaker 11: Thea dear, have you forgotten what today is?
• 27:56
Speaker 1: Quackett, referring to the head of paper.
• 27:59
Speaker 8: December the twenty second.
• 28:02
Speaker 11: Yes, but it's the day on which I am to
• 28:05
  Speaker 11: quit my weary.
• 28:07
Speaker 8: Oh you stucked going?
• 28:08
  Speaker 5: Then?
• 28:09
  Speaker 8: Well, I daresay you're right. You know you've a very
• 28:12
Speaker 8: bad cold. Nothing like change for a bad cold. Change
• 28:16
Speaker 8: of scene, change of pocket, handkerchiefs, and so.
• 28:18
Speaker 11: On, But you don't say anything about your own lonely Christmas.
• 28:24
Speaker 11: I have married a man who is too unselfish.
• 28:28
Speaker 1: The center door opened slightly, and the heads of the
• 28:30
Speaker 1: three girls, Peggy, Gwendolen and irmatrude up here, one above
• 28:35
Speaker 1: the other, spying Quackett putting down his paper lonely.
• 28:41
Speaker 8: By jove, these inquisitive pupils of yours won't let a
• 28:44
Speaker 8: fellow be lonely upon my soul. They are vexing girls.
• 28:49
Speaker 11: But they are a source of income, Dear.
• 28:53
Speaker 8: They're a source of annoyance. I've never had the measles.
• 28:58
Speaker 8: I've half a mind to catch it and give it
• 29:00
  Speaker 8: to em.
• 29:01
  Speaker 4: Now.
• 29:01
Speaker 8: If I could only while away my evening somewhere, these
• 29:04
Speaker 8: vexing girls wouldn't so much matter.
• 29:07
Speaker 1: He rises, the heads disappear, and the door closes. Listening,
• 29:12
Speaker 1: what was that the front door?
• 29:14
Speaker 8: I think I thought it might be those vexing girls
• 29:18
Speaker 8: they're always prying about. I was going to say, Carrie,
• 29:23
Speaker 8: why not let me withdraw my resignation at the Junior
• 29:26
Speaker 8: Amalgamated Club and continue my membership.
• 29:29
Speaker 11: Ten guineas a year for such an object I cannot
• 29:32
Speaker 11: afford and will not pay.
• 29:34
Speaker 8: Here upon my soul. I might just as well be
• 29:38
Speaker 8: nobody the way I'm treated.
• 29:41
Speaker 11: Oh, my king, don't say that. Have you thought about
• 29:45
  Speaker 11: the Christmas expenses?
• 29:47
Speaker 8: Frankly, my dear, I have not.
• 29:50
Speaker 11: Have you forgotten that my rent is due on Friday?
• 29:53
  Speaker 8: Completely?
• 29:54
Speaker 11: And don't think only think of your boots?
• 29:58
Speaker 8: Oh dash it all? What man of any position ever
• 30:01
  Speaker 8: thinks of.
• 30:01
Speaker 1: His boots producing a letter?
• 30:05
Speaker 8: The fact is, Caroline, I have had a note sent
• 30:08
Speaker 8: on to me from the club, my my friend Jack Mallory.
• 30:12
Speaker 8: He's first lieutenant on the Pandora, you know, and just
• 30:15
Speaker 8: home after four years at Malta. He reached London yesterday
• 30:20
Speaker 8: and writes me, reading, Now, old Chap, do let's have
• 30:25
Speaker 8: one of our old rollicking knights together?
• 30:27
Speaker 1: And what eh? Correcting himself, he writes me, referring to
• 30:34
  Speaker 1: the letter, Now.
• 30:36
Speaker 8: Old chap, do let me give you the details of
• 30:39
Speaker 8: our new self loading eighty ton gun? Well carry? What
• 30:45
Speaker 8: the deuce am I to do? It seems a nice gun?
• 30:49
Speaker 1: She shrugged her shoulders.
• 30:51
Speaker 8: Carry What is your view to do?
• 30:55
Speaker 1: She makes no answer. He approaches her and touches her
• 30:58
  Speaker 1: on the shoulder.
• 31:00
Speaker 8: Carrie, Carrie, look at your vera. Vera speaks to you.
• 31:07
Speaker 1: He sits on her lap.

• 31:20
Speaker 8: Now I can't show up at the club after sending

• 31:26
Speaker 8: entertain poor old Jack coaxingly Hey, resignation sent in through misunderstanding.
• 31:34
Speaker 1: Eh, pinching her cheek.
• 31:38
Speaker 8: Ten little guinea whinnies.
• 31:40
Speaker 11: Eh, not a guinea whinny for a club. Not half
• 31:46
  Speaker 11: a guinea whinny.
• 31:48
Speaker 8: Caroline, you forget what is due to me.
• 31:51
Speaker 11: I wish I could forget what is due to everybody.
• 31:54
Speaker 11: Don't be cross vere. I'll fetch your head and coat,
• 31:58
Speaker 11: and Via shall go out for his little morning stroll.
• 32:01
Speaker 11: And if he promises not to be angry with his Caroline,
• 32:05
Speaker 11: there are five shillings to spend.
• 32:08
Speaker 1: She gives him some silver. He looks up beamingly again,
• 32:12
Speaker 1: My darling, Miss Diod, taking his face between her hands
• 32:18
  Speaker 1: and kissing him.
• 32:20
Speaker 11: M you spoiled boy.
• 32:23
  Speaker 1: She runs out.
• 32:25
Speaker 8: Now what am I to do about Jack? I can't
• 32:28
Speaker 8: ask him here. Carrie would never allow it, and if
• 32:32
Speaker 8: she would, I couldn't stand the chaff about marrying a
• 32:35
Speaker 8: boarding school. No, I can't ask Jack here? Why can't

Speaker 8: all luck under the new regulations. Oh, and I haven't
• 34:03
  Speaker 8: addressed it. Where's Jack's slit?
• 34:07
Speaker 1: He takes the letter from his pocket. Peggy enters quietly,
• 34:10
Speaker 1: seeing Quacket, She draws back, watching him. Peggy to herself,
• 34:17
Speaker 1: what is he doing now?

• 34:43
Speaker 1: Uming an air, he shuts up the telegraph form in
• 34:46
Speaker 1: the blotting book and rises still with his back to Peggy.
• 34:54
Speaker 8: I feel so happy.
• 34:57
Speaker 1: He goes out. Peggy advances to the blotting book, carrying
• 35:01
  Speaker 1: some luggage labels.
• 35:03
Speaker 6: Miss Diat has sent me to address her luggage labels.
• 35:07
Speaker 6: I am compelled to open that blotting book.
• 35:11
Speaker 1: She sits on the chair lately vacated by Quacket, and
• 35:14
Speaker 1: opens the blotting book mischievously with her forefinger and thumb,

• 36:11
  Speaker 1: Quicket, coughing anxiously.
• 36:17
Speaker 8: I fancy I've left an eighty ton gun. I mean
• 36:20
  Speaker 8: I think I've mislaid.
• 36:21
Speaker 1: A Without looking up, Peggy readjusts the telegraph form against
• 36:26
  Speaker 1: the cabinet.
• 36:27
  Speaker 8: Oh, that's it.
• 36:30
Speaker 1: He makes one or two Fidgety attempts to take it.
• 36:33
Speaker 1: When Peggy rises with it in her hand, she reads
• 36:36
Speaker 1: it silently, forming the words with her lips.
• 36:39
Speaker 8: Oh you vexing girl? What do you think of doing
• 36:43
  Speaker 8: about it?
• 36:44
Speaker 1: She commences to fold the form very neatly.
• 36:47
Speaker 8: You know I shan't send it. I never meant to

Speaker 8: send it. I say, I shall not send it.
• 36:53
Speaker 1: Nervously holding out his hand, shall I, Peggy doubles up
• 36:58
Speaker 1: the form into another fold, without speaking.

• 37:18
  Speaker 5: Will you?
• 37:19
  Speaker 1: Miss Diot calling.
• 37:20
Speaker 11: Again, Miss heslow Ridge.
• 37:23
Speaker 1: Quackett in agony, oh between his teeth?
• 37:29
  Speaker 2: Do you.
• 37:31
Speaker 8: Do you know any bad language?
• 37:34
Speaker 6: I went to the Lord Mayor's show. Once I heard
• 37:37
  Speaker 6: a little.
• 37:38
Speaker 8: Then I regret to say I use it to you,
• 37:42
Speaker 8: Miss Heselrigg, I use it.
• 37:44
Speaker 1: To you, Miss Diot. Enters carrying Quackett's hat, gloves and overcoat.
• 37:50
Speaker 11: You can address the labels in another room, Miss heslo Ridge.
• 37:54
Speaker 1: Please Quackett to himself. Will she tell Peggy herself he
• 38:01
Speaker 1: is in our power. Peggy goes out, Miss Diot, putting
• 38:06
Speaker 1: the hat on Cuckett's head.
• 38:08
Speaker 11: You look sickly, my veer.
• 38:11
Speaker 8: I shall be better after my stroll, Caroline.
• 38:15
Speaker 1: A knock and ring are heard, Miss Diot assisting Cricket
• 38:19
  Speaker 1: with his overcoat.
• 38:20
Speaker 11: As you have some solitary evenings before you, you may
• 38:24
Speaker 11: lay in a few cigars sphere, darling, thank.
• 38:28
Speaker 1: You carry Miss Diot helping him to put on his
• 38:32
Speaker 1: gloves like a child.
• 38:34
Speaker 11: But for the sake of our depressed native industries, I
• 38:38
Speaker 11: beg that you will order those of purely British origin
• 38:41
  Speaker 11: and manufacture.
• 38:43
Speaker 1: Tyler Enters carrying a large common black tea tray upon
• 38:46
Speaker 1: which is a solitary visiting card.
• 38:49
Speaker 11: Where's the salver, you, bed boy.
• 38:52
Speaker 1: Tyler pointing the cucket sullenly.
• 38:55
Speaker 2: He slapped his chocolate over it.
• 38:58
Speaker 1: Miss Diot taking the card.
• 39:00
Speaker 11: Admiral and Missus Ranklin Dinah's parents. I must see them.
• 39:06
Speaker 1: Quackett, hastily, turning up his collar to conceal his face.
• 39:10
Speaker 8: No, no, they know me. They are old friends of
• 39:14
  Speaker 8: my families.
• 39:17
Speaker 1: Tyler shows in Admiral and Missus Rankling. Missus Rankling is
• 39:21
Speaker 1: a thin, weak looking, faded lady with a pale face
• 39:24
Speaker 1: and anxious eyes. She is dressed in too many colors
• 39:27
Speaker 1: and nothing seems to fit very well. Admiral Rankling is
• 39:31
Speaker 1: a stout, fine old gentleman with short, crisp gray hair
• 39:35
Speaker 1: and fierce black eyebrows. He appears to be suffering inwardly
• 39:39
  Speaker 1: from intense anger.
• 39:41
Speaker 11: My dear Missus Rankling.
• 39:44
Speaker 1: The ladies shake hands. Tyler goes out Missus Rankling, pointing to.
• 39:49
Speaker 8: Rankling, this is Admiral Rankling.
• 39:53
Speaker 1: Miss Diot bows ceremoniously. Rankling returns a slight bow and
• 39:58
Speaker 1: glares at her. Miss Diot to Missus.
• 40:01
Speaker 11: Rankling, pray sit by the fire.
• 40:05
Speaker 1: As the ladies move to the fire. Quackett, who has
• 40:08
Speaker 1: been watching his opportunity, creeps round at the back and
• 40:11
Speaker 1: goes out. Missus Rankling warming her feet at the fire.
• 40:16
Speaker 16: The Admiral has called upon you, miss Diet, with reference
• 40:20
Speaker 16: to our child Dina.
• 40:23
Speaker 1: Rankling, with a smothered explanation of rage, sits on the sofa.
• 40:28
Speaker 11: Whom we find the charming daughter of charming parents.
• 40:32
Speaker 1: Rankling gives her a fierce look, which frightens Miss Diot,
• 40:36
Speaker 1: who is most anxious to conciliate the Admiral.
• 40:40
Speaker 16: Dina's obstinacy is a very serious shock to the Admiral,
• 40:44
Speaker 16: who is naturally unused to in subordination.
• 40:49
Speaker 1: Naturally, Ranklin glares at her again. She puts her hand
• 40:53
  Speaker 1: to her heart.
• 40:55
Speaker 16: The Admiral has been stationed with his ship at Malta
• 40:58
Speaker 16: for a long period. In fact, the Admiral has not
• 41:03
Speaker 16: brightened our home for over four years.
• 41:07
Speaker 11: How more than delightful to have him with you again.
• 41:11
Speaker 1: Rankling gives Miss Diot a fearful look. She clutches her chair.
• 41:16
Speaker 16: The Admiral has one of those fine English tempers, generous
• 41:21
Speaker 16: but impetuous. You may guess the sad impression Dinah's ingratitude
• 41:27
Speaker 16: has produced upon him. It is an open secret that
• 41:31
Speaker 16: the Admiral made three wills yesterday and read King Leah's
• 41:35
Speaker 16: curse after supper in place of thanksgiving.
• 41:39
Speaker 1: Rankling sharply amore, Missus Rankling starting, Yes.
• 41:46
Speaker 5: Archibald, love the file. You'll be shold when we go.
• 41:51
Speaker 5: Come over here, Yes.
• 41:53
Speaker 1: Archibald, crossing the room in a flutter and sitting beside Rankling,
• 41:58
Speaker 1: who makes insufficient room for her.
• 42:01
Speaker 16: Thank you, Archibald. I have been sitting up with the
• 42:05
Speaker 16: Admiral all night, and it is owing to my entreaties
• 42:08
Speaker 16: that he has consented to give Dina one last chance
• 42:12
  Speaker 16: of reconciliation.
• 42:14
Speaker 1: Rankling, who has been eyeing her Alma.
• 42:18
Speaker 5: Yes, Archibald, your bullets on one side.
• 42:22
Speaker 1: Again, Missus Rankling, adjusting it.
• 42:26
  Speaker 11: Thank you, Archibald.
• 42:28
Speaker 16: We leave town for the holidays tomorrow. It rests with
• 42:32

• 42:38
Speaker 5: Don't twitch your fingers, Anna, don't twitch your.

• 42:47
  Speaker 16: It's a habit.
• 42:47
Speaker 5: To Archibald, that's a very bad one.
• 42:52
Speaker 16: All we require is that Dina should personally assure us
• 42:57
Speaker 16: that she has banished every thought of the full young
• 43:00
Speaker 16: gentleman she met at missus Saint Dunstan's.
• 43:04
Speaker 1: Miss Diot rising and ringing the bell.
• 43:07
Speaker 11: If I am any student of the passing fancies of
• 43:10
  Speaker 11: a young girl's mind.
• 43:12
Speaker 5: Speak louder, madam, Your voice doesn't.
• 43:15
Speaker 1: Trouble Miss Diod nervously with a gulp.
• 43:21
Speaker 11: If I am any student of the passing.
• 43:24
Speaker 1: Fancies, Ranklin puts his hand to his ear.
• 43:28
Speaker 11: Oh, don't make me so nervous.
• 43:31
Speaker 1: Jane enters, looking untidy, her sleeves turned up and wiping
• 43:35
Speaker 1: her hands upon her apron. Miss Diot shocked, where.
• 43:40
Speaker 11: Is the man servant on erin maa ask Miss Dinah
• 43:45
Speaker 11: Rankling to be good enough to step downstairs.
• 43:49
Speaker 1: Jane goes out. Rankling rises with Missus Ranklin clinging to

• 45:00
Speaker 5: Ludmare? Ender this unpardonable era of a judgment?
• 45:05
Speaker 1: Missus Rankling to Peggy, who was rubbing her shoulder and
• 45:08
Speaker 1: looking vindictively at Rankling.
• 45:10
Speaker 16: Oh, my dear young lady, pray think of this only
• 45:14
Speaker 16: as an amusing mistake. The Admiral has been away for
• 45:18
Speaker 16: more than four years. Dina was but a child when
• 45:22
Speaker 16: he last saw her.
• 45:26
Speaker 5: Oh dear me, be quiet, Emma, he'll make a scene.

• 1:15:15
Speaker 8: I don't put the question on theological grounds, but who

• 1:16:57
Speaker 1: Quackett turns to assist Saunders, who mounted on a chair,
• 1:17:01
Speaker 1: is struggling ineffectually to relieve Rankling of his overcoat.
• 1:17:04
Speaker 5: Thanky, bits of boys, Bits of boys.
• 1:17:09
  Speaker 1: Mallory to himself.
• 1:17:11

Speaker 19: It's his lonely bat your life. I suppose curious place too.
• 1:17:21
Speaker 19: He used to be such a swell in the Albany.

• 1:17:28
Speaker 1: Rankling to Quacket, linky linky whof Rankling sits down and
• 1:17:35
Speaker 1: Mallory talks to him. Saunders has sitting himself on the
• 1:17:39
Speaker 1: sofa and is dozing off, quite tired out ooh, what
• 1:17:43
Speaker 1: a party. The door opens and Peggy's head appears. Peggy
• 1:17:49
  Speaker 1: hurriedly to Quicket.
• 1:17:50
Speaker 6: Who's the thought of?
• 1:17:51
Speaker 8: This might be worse. He doesn't recognize the house he

• 1:19:11
Speaker 1: Peggy took Quacket, leave everything to me.

Speaker 1: Gwendolen and Ermatrude enter, visibly pushed on by Peggy. Rankling rising, um,
• 1:19:45

  Speaker 6: Mister Mallory.
• 1:25:52
Speaker 1: Mallory gallantly to Dinah.

Speaker 19: old friend's niece upon her recent marriage, taking her hand.
• 1:26:04
Speaker 19: I think myself especially fortunate in being present on.
• 1:26:09
Speaker 1: Such Reginald thrusting himself between Dinah and Mallory and giving

Speaker 1: Dinah expostulates in undertones with Reginald. He answering with violent
• 1:26:35
Speaker 1: gestures and glaring at Rankling, who mutters comments on Dinah's
• 1:26:38
Speaker 1: resemblance to various members of his family. Peggy endeavors to
• 1:26:42
Speaker 1: pacify Mallory, who is evidently annoyed, and altogether there is
• 1:26:46
Speaker 1: much hubbub, with signs of general ill feeling, Quackett sinking
• 1:26:51
Speaker 1: back in his chair.
• 1:26:52
Speaker 8: Ooh, what a fussy.

Speaker 1: glaring at Rankling as he passes. Reginald to Dinah fiercely,
• 1:28:00

• 1:28:08
  Speaker 10: are at.
• 1:28:08
Speaker 1: Present, they go out. Rankling watches them through the doorway.
• 1:28:13
Speaker 1: Gwendolen has meanwhile seated herself beside Saunders, whose head has
• 1:28:18
Speaker 1: gradually fallen till it rests upon her shoulder. She is
• 1:28:21
Speaker 1: now sitting quite still, looking down upon the boy's face, irmatrude,
• 1:28:26
  Speaker 1: watching them enviously.
• 1:28:28
Speaker 9: Well, considering that mister Saunders was introduced to us asleep.
• 1:28:32
Speaker 9: I don't think Gwendolen's behavior is come il foe.
• 1:28:36
Speaker 1: She bumps gently against Rankling. Oh, Rankling, looking at irmatrude,
• 1:28:42
  Speaker 1: rather dazed, My.
• 1:28:44
Speaker 5: Dear, I am quite glad to see somebody who isn't
• 1:28:47
Speaker 5: like any of my relations come along.
• 1:28:51
Speaker 1: They go out. Saunders moves dreamily and murmurs.
• 1:28:56
Speaker 2: All right, my dear, we'll come down directly.
• 1:29:02
Speaker 1: He raises his head and kisses Gwendolen, then opens his
• 1:29:06
Speaker 1: eyes and looks at her, startled.
• 1:29:08
Speaker 18: Oh, I've been dreaming about my ma.
• 1:29:15
  Speaker 7: I I don't know you do I It doesn't matter,
• 1:29:21
Speaker 7: mister Saunders, you've had such a good sleep.

Speaker 8: Oh that's just like myma. Where are the others.
• 1:29:33
Speaker 1: Gwendolen, arranging his curls upon his forehead.
• 1:29:37
Speaker 7: I'll take you to them.
• 1:29:39
  Speaker 5: Thank you.
• 1:29:41
Speaker 7: What's your name, Gwendolen?
• 1:29:45
Speaker 8: Gwen's short for that.
• 1:29:46
Speaker 1: Isn't it, rubbing his eyes with his fist, then offering
• 1:29:51
  Speaker 1: her his arm.
• 1:29:52
  Speaker 8: Permit me, Gwen.
• 1:29:55
Speaker 1: They go out. Quackett, his hair disarranged, his appearance generally wild,
• 1:30:00
Speaker 1: immediately enters, followed by Jane and Tyler.
• 1:30:03
Speaker 8: I can't help it. I'm in the hands of fate.
• 1:30:07
Speaker 8: Arrange the table. I cannot help it.
• 1:30:10
Speaker 1: Tyler and Jane proceed to arrange the table and the

• 1:30:22
Speaker 8: Well, in the first place, there are no oysters.
• 1:30:25
  Speaker 6: I've seen them.
• 1:30:27
Speaker 8: I've gone further. I've tasted them bad. Well, I should
• 1:30:32
Speaker 8: describe them as inland oysters. A long time since they
• 1:30:36
Speaker 8: had a fortnight at the seaside.
• 1:30:38
Speaker 6: Oh dear, then we must fall back on the lark pudding.
• 1:30:44
Speaker 8: You'll injure yourself seriously if you do.
• 1:30:47
Speaker 6: Tell me everything. It has not come small.
• 1:30:51
Speaker 8: It has come ridiculously small.
• 1:30:54
Speaker 6: It was ordered for eight persons.
• 1:30:57
Speaker 1: Then it is architecturally disproposed, Peggy to herself, something must
• 1:31:04
Speaker 1: be done. She runs to the writing table and begins
• 1:31:07
Speaker 1: to write rapidly on three half sheets of paper, folding
• 1:31:10
Speaker 1: each into a three cornered note as she finishes it.
• 1:31:13
Speaker 1: The girls must be warned writing.
• 1:31:17
Speaker 6: For goodness sake, don't taste the pudding. Put girls win
• 1:31:23
Speaker 6: an end to a happy day.
• 1:31:26
Speaker 1: Quackett to himself, Oh if the members of.
• 1:31:29
Speaker 8: My family could see me at this moment, I whose
• 1:31:33
Speaker 8: suppers in the Albany were at one time a proverb? Oh, Carolyn, Carolyn,
• 1:31:39
Speaker 8: even you little know the sacrifice I have made for you.
• 1:31:44
Speaker 1: Peggy to Quacket, handing him the notes.
• 1:31:47
Speaker 6: Quick, please quick, give them these notes.
• 1:31:50
Speaker 1: Quacket taking the notes?
• 1:31:53
  Speaker 13: What for?
• 1:31:54
  Speaker 6: Oh, don't ask.
• 1:31:55
Speaker 8: You will see the result, but you mustn't try to people.
• 1:31:59
  Speaker 6: You go away.
• 1:32:02
Speaker 1: He hurries out. Peggy wipes her eyes.
• 1:32:05
Speaker 3: Oh don't they have settin us?
• 1:32:07
  Speaker 4: No?
• 1:32:10
  Speaker 6: I won't. But I am only a girl, and the
• 1:32:15
Speaker 6: responsibility is very great for such young shoulders.
• 1:32:21
Speaker 1: There is a murmur of voices outside. Jane and Tyler
• 1:32:24
Speaker 1: go out as Rankling enters with Ermatrude, followed by Reggie
• 1:32:27
Speaker 1: with Dinah. Reginald Is endeavoring to keep her away from Mallory,
• 1:32:31
Speaker 1: who comes after them. Saunders and Gwendolen follow next, and
• 1:32:35
Speaker 1: Quicckett brings up the rear. There is much talking as
• 1:32:38
Speaker 1: Quackett indicates the seats they are to occupy. Peggy quietly
• 1:32:43
  Speaker 1: to Quacket.
• 1:32:44
Speaker 6: Did you give the girls the notes?

Speaker 18: way which overstepped the borders of ordinary admiration.
• 1:39:07
Speaker 1: They hastily shake hands all round and hurry back to

Speaker 1: street door, followed by a bell ringing violently, Peggy playing.
• 1:47:46
Speaker 6: Somebody wants to come in.
• 1:47:47

• 1:51:21
  Speaker 14: while you wait.
• 1:51:22
Speaker 5: But I don't wish to wait.
• 1:51:25
Speaker 1: Mallory and Peggy Saunders and Gwendolen, Reginald and Dinah, followed
• 1:51:30
Speaker 1: by Jane Enter. The girls are hastily attired in all

Speaker 1: sorts of odd apparel and carrying bonnet boxes, parcels and

Speaker 1: small handbags. Ermetrude carries, amongst other things, a cage of

Speaker 9: Take it quietly, takes.

• 1:52:04
Speaker 14: What for the staircase isn't just the thing for ladies

Speaker 14: ask the ladies and gentlemen to use the.
• 1:52:15
Speaker 1: Escape or turning to the window, the escape, the escape.
• 1:52:21
Speaker 14: It'll be here in two minutes. In the meantime, I
• 1:52:28
Speaker 14: think mister Golf could while away the time very pleasantly
• 1:52:31
Speaker 14: with a reminiscence or two ladies, mister Golf.
• 1:52:38
Speaker 1: Take him away, Mallory Saunders and Reginald to the ladies.
• 1:52:43
Speaker 1: Jeffrey goes to the window and looks out Gough pleasantly,
• 1:52:47
Speaker 1: seating himself and taking off his helmet.
• 1:52:50
Speaker 22: Well, ladies, I don't know that I can tell you
• 1:52:53
Speaker 22: much to amuse you.

Speaker 14: treat it's so hasty at any conflagration.
• 1:53:11
Speaker 1: He carries the hose out a farm.
• 1:53:15
Speaker 5: And full of anecdote. I decline to appreciate any reminiscence whatever,
• 1:53:21
Speaker 5: So do we all, certainly all of us.
• 1:53:25
Speaker 22: It was in July seventy nine. Ladies, my wife had
• 1:53:28
Speaker 22: just brought my tea to the gentle street station.
• 1:53:31
Speaker 1: Jeffrey re enters and goes to the window.
• 1:53:35
Speaker 19: Will you be silent, sir, get up and do something?
• 1:53:39
  Speaker 1: Go away?

Speaker 14: The escape, ladies and gentlemen that window, one at a time.
• 1:53:48
Speaker 1: There is a general movement in Hubbub goth rises. He

Speaker 1: and Geoffrey disappear by the window on the left. Mallory
• 1:53:55
Speaker 1: throws open the other window, and Jeffrey appears outside and

Speaker 1: receives ye Gwendolen irmatrude Peggy and Jane as they escape.
• 1:54:04
Speaker 5: Muster Mallory Muster slanders good evening.
• 1:54:09
Speaker 1: Reginald disappears by the right hand window. Saunders goes after him.
• 1:54:14
Speaker 1: Mallory is about to follow when Cuckett enters hurriedly. Quckett
• 1:54:18
Speaker 1: is in a tall hat, a short covered coat and
• 1:54:21
Speaker 1: carries gloves and an umbrella. He is flourishing a letter.
• 1:54:25
Speaker 1: Quackett pulling Mallory back.
• 1:54:28
Speaker 8: Jack Jack Hello, I'm going back to save some valuables. Directly,

Speaker 8: you get down posts that letter, Oh, Jacket's so important.
• 1:54:40
Speaker 1: Mallory looking at the letter to.
• 1:54:42
Speaker 19: The Eagle Fire Insurance Company.
• 1:54:45
Speaker 8: Quite so slipped my memory.
• 1:54:49
Speaker 1: Mallory disappears. Jeffrey follows him, Rankling hurrying to Quacket.
• 1:54:55
Speaker 5: My dear Cucket, it is the commander's juta to bear

Speaker 5: the lost, to leave the ship. You are, Master Hill,

Speaker 5: thank you for your hospitality. Good night, my.
• 1:55:07
Speaker 8: Dear Ranklin, thank you for coming to see me. Good night.
• 1:55:12
Speaker 1: Jeffrey appears at the window.
• 1:55:15
Speaker 14: It's all right, gentlemen. There's a kind lady down below
• 1:55:18
Speaker 14: who is taking everybody into her house for the night,
• 1:55:22
Speaker 14: Missus Ranklin of Portland Place.
• 1:55:25
Speaker 5: Missus Ranklin, that's my wife.
• 1:55:30
  Speaker 1: Quackett disappears, Is.
• 1:55:32
Speaker 14: She, sir, glad to hear it? Then they are all
• 1:55:35
Speaker 14: you visit us till tomorrow.
• 1:55:38
Speaker 5: Unfounded, Sir? Where do I live?
• 1:55:41
Speaker 14: Just at the corner here, sir? One hundred yards off?
• 1:55:45
Speaker 5: Then where am I now?
• 1:55:48
Speaker 14: Miss Diet's Boarding school?
• 1:55:49
  Speaker 1: Sir?
• 1:55:50
  Speaker 14: Volumnia College?
• 1:55:53
Speaker 1: What? He and Geoffrey go out by the window on
• 1:55:56
Speaker 1: the right, as Garth enters by the window on the left,
• 1:56:00
Speaker 1: where is he calling at the door, Sir, is the.
• 1:56:04
Speaker 22: Lady of the house rode up on an engine from Piccadilly.
• 1:56:08
Speaker 22: Make haste, she says, she will come up the letter.
• 1:56:11
Speaker 1: Quackett enters quickly, dragging after him several boxes of cigars.
• 1:56:16
  Speaker 8: Lady what lady?
• 1:56:19
Speaker 1: Miss Diot peers at the window. She is in the
• 1:56:22
Speaker 1: gorgeous dress of an opera boof queen, with a flaxen wig,
• 1:56:26
Speaker 1: much disarranged and a crown on one side. Recoiling Caroline,
• 1:56:33
Speaker 1: Miss Diot entering and taking him by the caller come down.
• 1:56:38
Speaker 1: She drags him towards the window. End of the second act,
• 1:56:43
Speaker 1: the third act, the Nightmare. The scene is a well furnished,
• 1:56:49
Speaker 1: tastefully decorated morning room in the house of Admiral Rankling.
• 1:56:53
Speaker 1: At the further end of the room, there are two
• 1:56:55
Speaker 1: double doors facing each other, one with glazed panels opening
• 1:56:59
Speaker 1: to a conservatory, the other to a dark room. There
• 1:57:02
Speaker 1: are also two doors near to the pillars that support
• 1:57:05
Speaker 1: an archway spanning the room. All is in darkness, save
• 1:57:09
Speaker 1: for a faint glow from the fire and a blue
• 1:57:12
Speaker 1: light coming through the conservatory windows. Peggy, dressed as before,
• 1:57:17
Speaker 1: enters quietly, looking about her.
• 1:57:19
Speaker 6: Where have I got to? Now? I wonder what a
• 1:57:23
Speaker 6: dreadful wilderness of a house to wander about in in
• 1:57:28
Speaker 6: the dark, all alone? Ah for the daylight?
• 1:57:34
Speaker 1: Looking at her watch half past.
• 1:57:37
Speaker 6: Six, Why gracious, here's a spark of fire. Oh joy.
• 1:57:43
Speaker 1: She goes down on her knees and replenishes the fire
• 1:57:46
Speaker 1: with coal from the scuttle. The door opens and Gwendolen peeps.
• 1:57:50
Speaker 7: In what room is this?
• 1:57:53
  Speaker 1: Entering noiselessly?
• 1:57:55
Speaker 7: Will the day never break?
• 1:57:57
Speaker 1: Frightened and retreating as Peggy makes a nose, he's blowing
• 1:58:00
  Speaker 1: up the fire.
• 1:58:01
Speaker 6: Oh oh, who is that?
• 1:58:04
  Speaker 1: Looking around?
• 1:58:06
Speaker 6: Gwendolen? Peggy, are you wandering about too?
• 1:58:11
  Speaker 1: Yes?
• 1:58:11
  Speaker 7: I can't sleep, can you?
• 1:58:14
  Speaker 1: Peggy? Shivering asleep?
• 1:58:17
Speaker 6: No, as if I could sleep in a strange bed
• 1:58:21
Speaker 6: in a strange house, in one of Admiral Rankling's nightgowns.
• 1:58:26
Speaker 6: You didn't meet any daylight on the stairs.
• 1:58:28
Speaker 1: Did you. Another door opened, and Ermatrude enters, noiselessly, Gwendolen,
• 1:58:34
Speaker 1: clinging to Peggy. Oh look there, Armatrude in a whisper.
• 1:58:40
Speaker 6: I wonder where I am now, Ermintrude.
• 1:58:43
Speaker 1: Ermatrude clinging to a chair, Ah.
• 1:58:47
Speaker 6: Be quiet, it's we, it's us, it's her and me.
• 1:58:52
Speaker 6: Oh my, Grammar's going now.
• 1:58:54
Speaker 9: Can't you girls get to sleep?
• 1:58:56
Speaker 7: I should think not.
• 1:58:57
Speaker 6: There wasn't any daylight in your room when you came
• 1:59:00
  Speaker 6: down with Sir.
• 1:59:01
Speaker 9: I thought I saw a glimmer through the window on
• 1:59:04
Speaker 9: the first floor landing.
• 1:59:06
  Speaker 6: Ah, perhaps that's some of yesterday's I know. I've made
• 1:59:10
Speaker 6: up the fire. Let us bivouac here till daybreak two
• 1:59:14
Speaker 6: by the fire and take it in turns for the.
• 1:59:16
Speaker 1: Sofa, picking up a bearskin rug and carrying it to
• 1:59:20
  Speaker 1: the sofa.
• 1:59:21
Speaker 6: Who's first for the sofa? Oh, Ermintrude, Gwendolen, come along, Gwendolen.
• 1:59:28
Speaker 1: Gwendolen puts herself upon the sofa, and Peggy covers her
• 1:59:31
Speaker 1: with a bear skin. There.
• 1:59:33
Speaker 6: As soon as you drop off to sleep, it will
• 1:59:35
  Speaker 6: be Ermintrude's turn.
• 1:59:37
Speaker 1: Looking through the conservatory doors.
• 1:59:40
Speaker 6: Oh, how the snow is coming down.
• 1:59:43
Speaker 1: Joining Ermatrude, who was warming her hands by the fire.
• 1:59:46
Speaker 1: She sits in an armchair.
• 1:59:49
Speaker 9: Peggy, do you know what has become of poor Dinah?
• 1:59:52
Speaker 6: Yes, she's locked up upstairs till the morning. Admiral Rankling
• 1:59:57
  Speaker 6: locked her up.
• 1:59:59
Speaker 1: Gwendolen on the sofa.
• 2:00:01
  Speaker 7: It's a shame.
• 2:00:03
Speaker 6: Go to sleep. Oh what a scene there was Admiral
• 2:00:07
Speaker 6: Rankling foamed at the mouth. It was lucky they got
• 2:00:10
Speaker 6: mister Cuckett away from him in time.
• 2:00:13
Speaker 7: Where is mister Cricket?
• 2:00:15
  Speaker 6: Go to sleep?
• 2:00:17
Speaker 1: Irmatrude, leaning against Peggy's knees.
• 2:00:21
Speaker 9: Mister Cuckett is locked up too, isn't he?
• 2:00:23
Speaker 6: Of course he is till the morning. Miss Diat locked
• 2:00:27
Speaker 6: him up very properly, I think.
• 2:00:31
Speaker 9: And where's miss Diet.
• 2:00:33
Speaker 6: Upstairs in the room next to mine? In hysterics? Hush,
• 2:00:39
Speaker 6: I do believe Gwendolen has gone off? Are you pretty comfortable?
• 2:00:43
Speaker 1: Irmatrude, her head on Peggy's lap, Yes, thank you. The
• 2:00:51
Speaker 1: door quietly opens and Saunders appears. Peggy and Ermatrude are
• 2:00:55
Speaker 1: hidden from him by the armchair.
• 2:01:00
Speaker 6: I can't sleep in my room.
• 2:01:03
Speaker 7: Where have they put Uncle Jack?
• 2:01:05
Speaker 1: I wonder seeing Gwendolen, who was sleeping with the light
• 2:01:09
Speaker 1: from the conservatory windows upon her.
• 2:01:11
  Speaker 8: Oh what's that?
• 2:01:13
Speaker 1: Going softly up to Gwendolen and looking at her.
• 2:01:16
Speaker 8: Why, here's my Gwen? I wonder if she'd mind my sitting.
• 2:01:21
Speaker 1: Near her, turning up his coat collar and sitting gently
• 2:01:25
Speaker 1: on the footstool. He leans against the head of the
• 2:01:27
Speaker 1: sofa drowsily. Now, if any robbers wanted to hurt Gwen,
• 2:01:31
Speaker 1: I could kill them, closing his eyes wearily. Oh, soon
• 2:01:39
Speaker 1: there is a sound of heavy, regular breathing from the
• 2:01:41
Speaker 1: four sleeping figures. The door opens and Mallory enters. Mallory shivering.
• 2:01:48
Speaker 19: Ugh, can't get a blessed wink of sleep? Where have
• 2:01:52
Speaker 19: I wandered to? Why this is the room where the
• 2:01:57
  Speaker 19: awful row.
• 2:01:58
Speaker 1: Was seeing Gwendolen? Hello, here's one of those schoolgirls discovering Saunders.
• 2:02:07
Speaker 19: And well, this nephew of mine is a devil of
• 2:02:11
  Speaker 19: a fellow. That isn't a glimmer of a fire.
• 2:02:15
Speaker 1: Surely, walking toward the fireplace, he nearly stumbles over Ermatrude.
• 2:02:21
  Speaker 19: More girls, he.
• 2:02:23
Speaker 1: Accidentally knocks over the scuttle. They all wake with a start.
• 2:02:27
  Speaker 1: What's that?
• 2:02:28
  Speaker 8: Who is it?
• 2:02:29
Speaker 19: Hush, don't be frightened.
• 2:02:32
  Speaker 6: It's only I, mister Mallory.
• 2:02:36
Speaker 19: I've been wandering about. Can't sleep?
• 2:02:40
Speaker 6: No, we can't sleep either.
• 2:02:43
Speaker 19: Well, I don't know about that.
• 2:02:46
Speaker 1: Ermatrude lights the candle on mantelpiece.
• 2:02:50
Speaker 6: Why haven't you and mister Saunders gone home? You're not
• 2:02:53
  Speaker 6: burnt out, perhaps.
• 2:02:55
Speaker 19: Not, but Admiral Ranklin asked me to remain. He hadn't.
• 2:03:00
Speaker 19: I'm not going to leave this house till my friend
• 2:03:03
Speaker 19: Queckett is out of danger.
• 2:03:06
  Speaker 6: Out of danger?
• 2:03:07
Speaker 19: Yes, are you aware that you young ladies have brought
• 2:03:12
Speaker 19: very grave difficulties upon that unfortunate gentleman, Peggy crying?
• 2:03:19
  Speaker 6: He encouraged us.
• 2:03:21
Speaker 19: He's a man now, pray don't cry, my dear miss.
• 2:03:28
Speaker 19: What is your name this morning?
• 2:03:30
Speaker 6: Hasla Ridge? And I wish I'd never been born.
• 2:03:35
Speaker 19: Hesler Ridge, And you wish you'd never been born?
• 2:03:39
Speaker 1: Taking her hand, well.
• 2:03:42
Speaker 19: Miss Heslerridge. The serious aspect of the affair is that
• 2:03:47
Speaker 19: Admiral Rankling has a most violent, ungovernable temper.
• 2:03:53
Speaker 1: Peggy carefully, I know I've never seen a gentleman foam
• 2:03:59
  Speaker 1: at the mouth.
• 2:04:00
  Speaker 3: It's quite a new experience.
• 2:04:04
Speaker 19: Of course, of course, and therefore I'm apprehensive for poor
• 2:04:11
Speaker 19: mister Quckett's bodily safety. Meanwhile, I won't disturb you any longer.
• 2:04:18
Speaker 19: Come along, Saunders, Where are you going to the front
• 2:04:23
Speaker 19: door to speak a word or two of encouragement to
• 2:04:27
Speaker 19: that young fellow Paul over?
• 2:04:29
Speaker 6: Oh? Is he outside still in the snow?
• 2:04:34
Speaker 19: Why He's been walking up and down on the other
• 2:04:36
Speaker 19: side of the way all night, and.
• 2:04:39
Speaker 6: You haven't let him in.
• 2:04:41
Speaker 19: How could I you forget that our host has forbidden
• 2:04:46
  Speaker 19: him the house?
• 2:04:48
Speaker 6: No, I don't. I saw them roll out on the
• 2:04:52
Speaker 6: road together. Girls. Shall we open the front door, or
• 2:04:57
Speaker 6: shall we remain the mere slaves of etiquette?
• 2:05:00
Speaker 7: Or I should like to let him in?
• 2:05:02
  Speaker 9: Certainly?
• 2:05:03
Speaker 1: Why not come along?
• 2:05:05
Speaker 18: I know the way?
• 2:05:07
Speaker 1: Saunders, Gwendolen and Urbtrude go out quietly.
• 2:05:11
Speaker 19: Mallory to Peggy, Well, you'll perhaps pardon my saying that
• 2:05:17
Speaker 19: you are a devil may care little schoolgirl.
• 2:05:21
Speaker 6: You make a great mistake. I am not a schoolgirl.
• 2:05:25
Speaker 6: I am struggling to be a governess.
• 2:05:28
Speaker 19: Ah, I hope you'll make your way in your profession.
• 2:05:33
Speaker 1: Peggy has discovered the spirit stand on the sideboard and
• 2:05:35
Speaker 1: now places it on the table.
• 2:05:38
Speaker 19: What are you going to do now?
• 2:05:41
Speaker 6: Brew poor mister polover something hot?
• 2:05:44
Speaker 1: Bringing the kettle and spirit lamp to the table. Light
• 2:05:48
Speaker 1: this lamp for me, please, he lights the lamp.
• 2:05:52
Speaker 6: If you can recommend me at any time to a
• 2:05:54
Speaker 6: lady with young daughters, I shall be grateful.
• 2:05:58
  Speaker 19: I will, I will.
• 2:06:01
Speaker 6: I think I am almost capable of finishing any young lady.
• 2:06:06
Speaker 1: Now, I am sure you are looking at the spirit lamp?
• 2:06:11
Speaker 19: Is that a light?
• 2:06:13
Speaker 1: They put their heads down close together to look at
• 2:06:15
Speaker 1: the lighted lamp. That's all right, seems so they rise
• 2:06:21
Speaker 1: and look at each other.
• 2:06:22
Speaker 19: We'd better watch it, perhaps, in case it goes out.
• 2:06:27
Speaker 1: They bob down again with her heads together and both
• 2:06:29
Speaker 1: sit on the same chair.
• 2:06:31
Speaker 19: You'll get into an awful scrape over your share in
• 2:06:35
Speaker 19: last night's business, won't you frightful?
• 2:06:39
Speaker 6: The thought depresses me.
• 2:06:42
Speaker 19: Do you think miss Diote or missus Cucket or whatever
• 2:06:47
Speaker 19: she is, we'll send you home?
• 2:06:50
Speaker 6: She can't. She's got me forever. She took me years
• 2:06:54
Speaker 6: ago for a bad debt.
• 2:06:57
Speaker 19: How can she punish you?
• 2:06:58
  Speaker 13: Then?
• 2:06:59
  Speaker 1: I think she.
• 2:07:00
Speaker 6: Will withdraw her confidence from me.
• 2:07:04
Speaker 19: You won't despair, will you.
• 2:07:06
Speaker 6: I'll try not to.
• 2:07:09
Speaker 19: What a jolly little sailor's wife you'd make brewing grog
• 2:07:13
  Speaker 19: like this.
• 2:07:14
Speaker 6: I hope I should do my duty in any station
• 2:07:17
Speaker 6: of life to which I might be called.
• 2:07:20
  Speaker 19: I'm a sailor, you know?
• 2:07:23
  Speaker 6: Now?
• 2:07:24
Speaker 1: Are you Mallory taking her hand and putting it to
• 2:07:28
  Speaker 1: his lips?
• 2:07:29
Speaker 19: You know I am Peggy?
• 2:07:32
Speaker 1: Suddenly it's going to boil over they jump up quickly.
• 2:07:37
Speaker 1: Mallory retreats, Oh no, it isn't. Gwendolen and Urmtrude enter,
• 2:07:44
Speaker 1: leading Reginald, with Saunders following. Reginald is in a deplorable condition,
• 2:07:49
Speaker 1: covered with snow and icicles. His face is white and
• 2:07:52
  Speaker 1: his nose red.
• 2:07:54
Speaker 6: Oh poor mister paulover he's frostbitten fine by degrees.
• 2:08:02
Speaker 1: Peggy mixes the grog. Gwendolen and Ermatrude lead Reginald to
• 2:08:05
Speaker 1: a chair before the fire. He uttering some violent but
• 2:08:08
  Speaker 1: incoherent exclamations.
• 2:08:10
Speaker 9: He's annoyed with Admiral Rankling.
• 2:08:13
Speaker 1: The girl shave his hands while he still mutters with
• 2:08:16
Speaker 1: his eyes rolling, it's.
• 2:08:17
Speaker 6: A good job. His language is frozen.
• 2:08:21
Speaker 1: Putting the glass of grog to his lips, Reginald reviving.
• 2:08:25
Speaker 18: Thank you, take my hat off please, I bought it
• 2:08:30
  Speaker 18: from a cammon.
• 2:08:32
Speaker 1: Gwendolen removes his hat, which is very shabby.
• 2:08:35
Speaker 18: Good morning. Where's my wife?
• 2:08:38
Speaker 6: Dinah, she's quite safe.
• 2:08:41
Speaker 18: I must see her. Speak to her.
• 2:08:45
  Speaker 6: You can't, she's locked up.
• 2:08:47
Speaker 18: Then I must push along letter under her door. She
• 2:08:51
Speaker 18: must she shall know that I'm going to walk up
• 2:08:56
Speaker 18: and down and say it. This house all my life
• 2:08:59
  Speaker 18: bring writing materials.
• 2:09:02
Speaker 19: Oh, hunt for the pen and ink, so will I?
• 2:09:06
  Speaker 1: Reginald to Peggy.
• 2:09:08
Speaker 18: No, no, you do it. These men are bashless. They
• 2:09:13
Speaker 18: can't feel for me.
• 2:09:15
  Speaker 19: Here's a writing table.
• 2:09:17
Speaker 1: Peggy runs to Mallory and opens the lid of the
• 2:09:19
  Speaker 1: writing table.
• 2:09:21
  Speaker 6: Notepaper and envelopes.
• 2:09:24
Speaker 1: Where's the opening one of the small drawers? She starts
• 2:09:28
Speaker 1: back with a cry.
• 2:09:30
  Speaker 6: Oh.
• 2:09:31
Speaker 1: They all turn and look at her. Peggy taking from
• 2:09:36
Speaker 1: the drawer a large bunch of keys, each with a
• 2:09:39
Speaker 1: small label, which he examines breathlessly.
• 2:09:43
Speaker 6: Duplicate keys of all the rooms in the house. What
• 2:09:47
Speaker 6: gross carelessness to leave keys in an open drawer? Girls?
• 2:09:52
Speaker 6: Why should not we impress this fact upon Admiral Rankling
• 2:09:56
Speaker 6: by releasing Dinah immediately.
• 2:09:59
Speaker 1: Oh yes, yeses Reginald, seizing Peggy's hand.
• 2:10:04
Speaker 18: Oh, miss Hesserich, my father in law is entertaining an angel.
• 2:10:09
  Speaker 5: In the ways.
• 2:10:10
Speaker 19: Oh stop, stop, stop. I don't think we're quite justified.
• 2:10:17
Speaker 18: I told you he was merely a bachelor.
• 2:10:20
Speaker 1: Pointing to Saunders, so is his companion give me the keys?
• 2:10:25
Speaker 6: No? No, I take responsibility of this. I am a girl.
• 2:10:30
Speaker 1: Going towards the door and looking at Mallory and Saunders,
• 2:10:33
Speaker 1: as they make way for her.
• 2:10:35
Speaker 6: I hope you will repent your line of conduct, gentlemen,
• 2:10:39
  Speaker 6: She goes out.
• 2:10:41
Speaker 19: I think we all shall.
• 2:10:43
Speaker 1: There is a sudden noise as of someone falling down
• 2:10:46
Speaker 1: a couple of stairs. They start and listen. Oh, what's that,
• 2:10:51
Speaker 1: ermatrude looking out at door?
• 2:10:54
  Speaker 9: Here's Admiral Rankling.
• 2:10:56
Speaker 1: There is a suppressed exclamation with a silent scamper to
• 2:10:58
Speaker 1: the further end of the room.
• 2:11:00
Speaker 19: Want the deuce? Does a respectable man want out of
• 2:11:05
Speaker 19: bed at this unearthly hour?
• 2:11:08
Speaker 1: Rankling in a rage outside the door. Oh, Reginald opening
• 2:11:15
Speaker 1: the door leading to the dark room.
• 2:11:18
Speaker 18: Here's the room here? Shall we condescend to hide? Yes, yes, yes, yes.
• 2:11:22
Speaker 1: They disappear hastily as Rankling appears in a dressing gown,
• 2:11:26
Speaker 1: his face pale and his eyes red and wild.
• 2:11:29
Speaker 5: Oho, someone's been sitting up candles and the.
• 2:11:34
Speaker 1: Fire ah sniffing and walking about the room. He goes
• 2:11:39
Speaker 1: straight to the mantelpiece upon which Reginald's grog has been left,
• 2:11:43
Speaker 1: and takes up the tumbler. It's mallory with suppressed passion.
• 2:11:49
Speaker 5: That's again strules for anyone to sit up in milese.
• 2:11:53
  Speaker 5: But I don't mind, Mallory.
• 2:11:56
  Speaker 1: I don't looking at sofa.
• 2:12:00
Speaker 5: Hello, Malory has been turning in.
• 2:12:03
Speaker 1: Here, going to the sofa and sitting there shaking with anger?
• 2:12:07
Speaker 5: Are we never to have any more daylight?
• 2:12:11
Speaker 13: How long am I to wait till that miserable school
• 2:12:14
Speaker 13: mistress releases the worm Quakert Quacket, uncle fel, the reptile
• 2:12:22
Speaker 13: who's made a fool of me in the eyes of.
• 2:12:25
Speaker 5: My wife and daughter. Ah, But I must husband my strength,
• 2:12:31
Speaker 5: for Quaket. I have been a very careful man all
• 2:12:35
Speaker 5: my life, as far as muscular economy goes. Quakert shall
• 2:12:41
Speaker 5: have the savings of a.
• 2:12:42
Speaker 1: Lifetime lying down and pulling a rug over him.
• 2:12:47
Speaker 5: Uncle feil, Ah, I was a wild, impetuous, daring lad
• 2:12:53
Speaker 5: once going to sleep, and I can be unpleasant even
• 2:12:59
Speaker 5: now I can. The Admiralty doesn't know it, Emma doesn't
• 2:13:05
Speaker 5: know it. Quacker shall know it.
• 2:13:08
Speaker 1: He breathes heavily. The others had been peeping from their
• 2:13:12
Speaker 1: hiding place, and as they close the door, Peggy enters alone.
• 2:13:15
Speaker 1: Quickly but silently, she looks for the others. That almost
• 2:13:19
Speaker 1: falls over Rankling on the sofa, at which she retreats
• 2:13:22
Speaker 1: with a suppressed screech of horror. Malory opens the further
• 2:13:25
Speaker 1: door and gesticulates to her violently to be silent. Peggy petrified,
• 2:13:31
Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, gracious Mallory comes and bends over, rankling,
• 2:13:36
Speaker 1: listening to his breathing. He then goes to.
• 2:13:38
Speaker 19: Peggy, he's dropped off. Where is missus Poulover?
• 2:13:43
Speaker 6: She's not on that side of the house.
• 2:13:47
Speaker 19: I have a plan for disposing of the old gentleman.
• 2:13:50
Speaker 19: Try the other side.
• 2:13:52
Speaker 1: I'm going to turning and clutching Mallory.
• 2:13:56
Speaker 6: But oh, mister Mallory, what do you think I've done.
• 2:14:01
Speaker 19: That's impossible to conjecture.
• 2:14:04
Speaker 6: I've made a mistake about the doors, and I have
• 2:14:07
  Speaker 6: unlocked mister cricket.
• 2:14:10
Speaker 1: She goes out quickly. Malory thinks for a moment, then
• 2:14:13
Speaker 1: burst into a fit of silent laughter.
• 2:14:17
Speaker 19: I love that girl.
• 2:14:19
Speaker 1: Reginald appears at the further door, gesticulating.
• 2:14:23
Speaker 2: Where is my wife?
• 2:14:24
Speaker 18: I cann't live longer without her?
• 2:14:26
Speaker 19: Where is Dinah? Hush, she'll be here in a minute.
• 2:14:32
Speaker 19: Come out of there and lend me a hand.
• 2:14:35
Speaker 1: Saunders, Gwendolen, and Ermatrude enter on tiptoe to Reginald.
• 2:14:39
  Speaker 19: Now then gently.
• 2:14:43
Speaker 1: Mallory and Reginald each take an end of the sofa
• 2:14:45
Speaker 1: and carry Rankling out through the door into the dark room.
• 2:14:49
Speaker 7: If they bump him, all's lost.
• 2:14:52
Speaker 1: Mallorie and Reginald reappear.
• 2:14:54
Speaker 19: I feel a woman, now turn the key.
• 2:14:58
Speaker 1: Reginald turns the key as Dinah and peg enter cautiously.
• 2:15:01
Speaker 9: Dinah, Reggie, my wife.
• 2:15:05
Speaker 1: Reginald rushes down to Dinah and embraces her frantically. There
• 2:15:09
Speaker 1: is a general cry of relief as Mallory embraces Peggy
• 2:15:12
Speaker 1: and Gwendolen throws her arms around Saunders. Suddenly there is
• 2:15:16
Speaker 1: the sound of someone stumbling downstairs, accompanied by a smothered exclamation.
• 2:15:21
Speaker 1: All listening, what's that?
• 2:15:23
  Speaker 17: What's that?
• 2:15:24
  Speaker 8: What's that?
• 2:15:25
Speaker 1: Ermatrude peeping out at the door.
• 2:15:28
Speaker 9: Here's Uncle Vie got loose. He's fallen downstairs.
• 2:15:31
Speaker 1: Oh bather, come along, Dinah, Reginald and Dinah Saunders, Ermatrude
• 2:15:37
Speaker 1: and Gwendolen go out quickly. Peggy to Mallory, Rather.
• 2:15:42
Speaker 6: Bad taste of your nephew and those girls to run
• 2:15:46
Speaker 6: after a newly married couple, isn't it.
• 2:15:49
Speaker 19: Yes, we won't do it.
• 2:15:53
Speaker 6: No, but we don't want to be bothered with your
• 2:15:57
Speaker 6: old friend cricket, do we?
• 2:16:00
  Speaker 1: No?
• 2:16:01
Speaker 19: He's an awful bore. Is the conservatory? Heated?
• 2:16:07
Speaker 1: Peggy taking his arm, I don't mind if it isn't.
• 2:16:12
Speaker 1: They disappear into the conservatory. The door opens, and Quacket,
• 2:16:17
Speaker 1: his face pale and haggard, enters, still wearing his hat
• 2:16:20
Speaker 1: and the short covert coat over his evening dress, and
• 2:16:23
Speaker 1: carrying his gloves and umbrella.
• 2:16:26
Speaker 8: To whom am I indebted for being let out? Was
• 2:16:31
Speaker 8: it my way of treachery? I wonder somebody has been
• 2:16:35
Speaker 8: sitting up late or rising early?
• 2:16:36
  Speaker 5: Who is it?
• 2:16:38
Speaker 1: Sniffing and looking about him, then going straight to the mantelpiece,
• 2:16:41
Speaker 1: taking up the tumbler and smelling the contents.
• 2:16:44
Speaker 8: I mean, just not to do anyone in injustice. But
• 2:16:48
Speaker 8: that's Peggy. Oh what a night have passed. I have
• 2:16:52
Speaker 8: no hesitation in saying that the extremely bad behavior of Caroline,
• 2:16:58
Speaker 8: of the lady I have married, and the ungovernable rage
• 2:17:02
Speaker 8: of Rankling are indelibly impressed upon me.
• 2:17:07
Speaker 1: Looking round and nervously.
• 2:17:09
Speaker 8: Good gracious, I'm actually in the room where Rankling announced
• 2:17:13
Speaker 8: his intention of ultimately dislocating my vertebrae. I shall certainly
• 2:17:18
Speaker 8: not winter in England.
• 2:17:20
Speaker 1: The clock strikes seven. He looks at his watch seven.
• 2:17:26
Speaker 8: It will be wise to remain here till the first
• 2:17:29
Speaker 8: gleam of daylight, and then leave the house unostentatiously. I
• 2:17:36
Speaker 8: will exchange no explanations with Caroline. I shall simply lay
• 2:17:41
Speaker 8: the whole circumstance of my injudicious, boyish marriage before my
• 2:17:46
Speaker 8: brother Bob and the other members of my family. Any
• 2:17:49
Speaker 8: allowance which Caroline may make me shall come through them.
• 2:17:53
Speaker 1: There is a sound of something falling and breaking outside
• 2:17:56
Speaker 1: the room the deuce. What's that going on? Tiptoe over
• 2:18:02
Speaker 1: to the door and peeping out.
• 2:18:04
Speaker 8: Somebody is knocked something over.
• 2:18:06
Speaker 1: Snatching up his hat, gloves and umbrella.
• 2:18:09
Speaker 8: I shan't wait till daybreak if they're breaking other things.
• 2:18:12
Speaker 1: He hurries to the other door, opens it, looks out,
• 2:18:15
Speaker 1: and closes it quickly.
• 2:18:17
Speaker 8: People sitting on the stairs. Is this a plot to
• 2:18:20
Speaker 8: surround me the conservatory?
• 2:18:24
Speaker 1: He goes quickly to the conservatory doors, opens them, and
• 2:18:27
Speaker 1: then draws back, closing them quickly.
• 2:18:30
Speaker 8: Two persons under a palm tree.
• 2:18:32
Speaker 1: There is a knock at the door on the right.
• 2:18:34
Speaker 1: Oh seeing the door leading to the dark room.
• 2:18:37
Speaker 8: Where does that lead to?
• 2:18:39
Speaker 1: He tries the door, unlocks it and looks in.
• 2:18:43
Speaker 8: A dark room. Who I'm so thankful.
• 2:18:47
Speaker 1: He disappears, closing the door after him. The knocking outside
• 2:18:52
Speaker 1: is repeated. Then the door opens and Miss Dyot enters.
• 2:18:56
Speaker 1: She is dressed in her burlesque queen costume. Her face
• 2:18:59
Speaker 1: is pale. She carries the head broken off at the
• 2:19:02
Speaker 1: neck of a terra cotta bust of a woman.
• 2:19:05
Speaker 11: I have broken a bust. Now it is an embarrassing
• 2:19:08
Speaker 11: thing to break a bust in the house of comparative strangers.
• 2:19:13
Speaker 11: Oh will it never be daylight? Does the milkman never
• 2:19:17
Speaker 11: come to Portland place? I have been listening at the
• 2:19:21
Speaker 11: keyhole of Ver's room. Not a sound. He can sleep
• 2:19:26
Speaker 11: with the ruin of Volumnia College upon his conscience.
• 2:19:29
Speaker 1: While I sinking into a chair, Ah.
• 2:19:33
Speaker 11: I realize now the correctness of the poet's observation. Uneasy
• 2:19:39
Speaker 11: lies the head that wears a crown.
• 2:19:42
Speaker 1: Quackett comes quietly from the dark room, much terrified.
• 2:19:46
Speaker 8: Ranklings in there asleep in the dark. I sat on him. Oh,
• 2:19:52
  Speaker 8: what a narrow escape I've.
• 2:19:54
Speaker 1: Had, coming behind Miss Diot and suddenly seeing her.
• 2:19:58
Speaker 8: Caroline La and Charybis.
• 2:20:02
Speaker 1: He bolts back into the dark room. Miss Diot, rising alarmed,
• 2:20:08
Speaker 1: What's that Missus Ragling enters in a penoir. I heard
• 2:20:13
Speaker 1: something fall seeing miss diot missus Cricket distantly.
• 2:20:20
Speaker 16: Instructions were given that everybody should be called at eight.
• 2:20:24
Speaker 16: I had arranged that a more appropriate costume should be
• 2:20:27
Speaker 16: placed at your disposal.
• 2:20:30
Speaker 1: Seeing the broken bust.
• 2:20:32
Speaker 16: Ah, what has happened?
• 2:20:35
  Speaker 11: I knocked over a pedestal.
• 2:20:37
  Speaker 1: Missus Wragling distressed?
• 2:20:40
Speaker 16: Oh, bust of myself by belt? I saw him working
• 2:20:44
Speaker 16: on it. Oh, missus cricket, is there no end of
• 2:20:49
Speaker 16: the trouble you have brought upon us?
• 2:20:52
Speaker 11: The trouble you have brought upon me?
• 2:20:55
  Speaker 1: What?
• 2:20:57
Speaker 16: Why didn't you tell us you had a husband?
• 2:21:00
Speaker 11: Why didn't you tell me that Dinah had a husband?
• 2:21:05
Speaker 16: We didn't know it.
• 2:21:07
Speaker 11: Well, if you didn't know your own daughter was married,
• 2:21:10
Speaker 11: how can you wonder at your ignorance of other people's
• 2:21:13
  Speaker 11: domestic complications.
• 2:21:16
Speaker 8: But that's not all.
• 2:21:18
Speaker 16: You have informed us that you are now actually contributing
• 2:21:21
Speaker 16: to a nightly entertainment of a volatile description, That you
• 2:21:28
Speaker 16: are positively being laughed at in public.
• 2:21:32
Speaker 11: Isn't it better to be left at in public and
• 2:21:35
Speaker 11: paid for it than to be sniggered at privately for nothing?
• 2:21:40
Speaker 16: Missus Quackett, you are revealing your true character.
• 2:21:45
Speaker 11: It is the same as your own, an undervalued wife.
• 2:21:50
Speaker 11: Let me open your eyes as mine are opened. We
• 2:21:53
Speaker 11: have engaged to love and to honor two men. I
• 2:21:58
Speaker 11: have done nothing of the kind I mean one each. Oh,
• 2:22:04
Speaker 11: excuse me now looking at him microscopically, is there much
• 2:22:10
Speaker 11: to love and to honor in Admiral Rankling?
• 2:22:14
Speaker 16: Um, he is a genial after dinner speaker. Ah hah,
• 2:22:21
Speaker 16: it is true. He is rather austere an.
• 2:22:25
Speaker 11: Austere sailor all boughs abroad and stern at home. Well, then,
• 2:22:33
Speaker 11: knowing what occurred last night, is there anything to love
• 2:22:37
Speaker 11: and to honor in mister Quackett?
• 2:22:40
  Speaker 16: Nothing whatever?
• 2:22:43
  Speaker 1: Miss Diot annoyed.
• 2:22:45
Speaker 11: And yet he is undoubtedly the superior of Admiral Rankling.
• 2:22:50
Speaker 11: Very well, then, do as I mean to do. Put
• 2:22:53
Speaker 11: your foot down. If Heaven has gifted you with a
• 2:22:57
Speaker 11: large one, so much the better.
• 2:23:00
Speaker 1: The voices of Quacket and Rankling are heard suddenly raised
• 2:23:03
Speaker 1: in the adjoining room.
• 2:23:05
Speaker 16: Quackert, my dear Rankling, Ver the Admiral has released your husband.
• 2:23:14
Speaker 8: I'll trouble you, sir, certainly.
• 2:23:17
Speaker 11: Rankling, come away and I will advise you bring your
• 2:23:22
  Speaker 11: head with you.
• 2:23:23
Speaker 1: Miss diot and missus Rankling, carrying the broken bust hurry
• 2:23:27
Speaker 1: out as Quackett enters, quickly, followed by Rankling.
• 2:23:30
Speaker 8: Admiral Rankling, I shall mark my opinion of your behavior
• 2:23:34
Speaker 8: through the post sit down. Thank you, I've been sitting.
• 2:23:42
Speaker 8: I set on you on the sofa.
• 2:23:44
  Speaker 5: Sit down.
• 2:23:47
  Speaker 1: Quackett sits promptly.
• 2:23:50
Speaker 5: An old friend of your family, Mister Quackett, I am
• 2:23:55
Speaker 5: going to have a quiet chat with you on family matters.
• 2:24:01
Speaker 1: Rankling wheels the armchair near Quacket. Quackett to himself, I
• 2:24:06
Speaker 1: don't like his calmness.
• 2:24:09
  Speaker 8: I don't like his calmness.
• 2:24:13
Speaker 1: Rankling sits, bending forward and glaring at Quacket.
• 2:24:16
Speaker 5: How is your sister Janet quite well? Eh?
• 2:24:22
Speaker 13: Tell me without a moment's delay, sir, how is Janet?
• 2:24:29
Speaker 8: Permit me to say, Admiral Rankling, that whatever you're standing
• 2:24:33
Speaker 8: with other members of my family, you have no acquaintance
• 2:24:37
Speaker 8: with the lady you mention?
• 2:24:39
Speaker 1: Oh haven't I drawing his chair nearer? Quacket?
• 2:24:45
Speaker 5: Very well? Then? Is Griffin quite well? Finch Griffin of
• 2:24:50
  Speaker 5: the Berkshire.
• 2:24:51
Speaker 8: Ryles, I do not know how Major Griffin is, and
• 2:24:56
Speaker 8: I feel I do not care.
• 2:24:58
Speaker 5: Oh you don't very well.
• 2:25:01
Speaker 1: Then, drawing his chair still nearer, Quacket, will.
• 2:25:06
Speaker 5: You answer me one simple but important question.
• 2:25:12
Speaker 8: If it be a question a gentleman may answer certainly?
• 2:25:17
Speaker 5: How often do you hear from your brother Tankervill?
• 2:25:23
Speaker 1: Oh, Rankling clutching Quackett's knee.
• 2:25:27
Speaker 5: He's Deputy Inspector of Prisons and British Guiana you know
• 2:25:33
Speaker 5: doesn't have time to write often does hair add more?
• 2:25:38
Speaker 8: Rankling? You will permit me to remind you that in
• 2:25:40
Speaker 8: families of long standing and complicated interests, there are regrettable
• 2:25:45
Speaker 8: estrangements which should be lightly dealt with. Affected you have
• 2:25:51
  Speaker 8: recalled memories.
• 2:25:53
Speaker 1: Rising, Excuse me, Rankling, Rising.
• 2:25:57
Speaker 5: No, sir, I will not excut use you.
• 2:26:01
Speaker 8: Where are my gloves?
• 2:26:03
Speaker 5: Because misster Clackett I have your assurance? Is a gentleman
• 2:26:09
Speaker 5: that your brother Tankervill's daughter is married to a charming
• 2:26:12
Speaker 5: young fellow of the name of Parkinson. Now I've discovered
• 2:26:18
Speaker 5: that Parkinson is really a charming young fellow of the
• 2:26:22
Speaker 5: name of Paul Over. So that as Paul Over has
• 2:26:26
Speaker 5: married my daughter as well as Tankivals, Paulover must be
• 2:26:31
Speaker 5: prosecuted for bigger may And as you know that Polover
• 2:26:36
Speaker 5: was Parkinson and Parkinson paul Over. You connived at the
• 2:26:41
Speaker 5: crime inasmuch as, knowing paul Over was Tankivill's daughter's husband,
• 2:26:47
Speaker 5: you deliberately aided Parkinson in making my chard Dinah his wife.
• 2:26:52
Speaker 5: But that's not the worst of it, oh, because I
• 2:26:57
Speaker 5: have since received yours yet gentlemanly assurance the Tankivil's daughter
• 2:27:04
Speaker 5: is my daughter. Now, either you mean to say that
• 2:27:10
Speaker 5: I've behaved like a blackguard to Tankville, which will be liable,
• 2:27:16
Speaker 5: or that Tankiville has conducted himself with less than common
• 2:27:20
Speaker 5: fairness to me, which will be a divorce. And in
• 2:27:24
Speaker 5: either case, without wishing to anticipate the law, I shall
• 2:27:30
Speaker 5: personally chastise you, because, oh, I've been a sailor on
• 2:27:36
Speaker 5: the high seas for five and forty years. I have never,
• 2:27:42
Speaker 5: during the whole of that period listened to such a
• 2:27:48
Speaker 5: yarn of mendacious fabrication as you spun.
• 2:27:54
Speaker 1: Me last night, Quackett beginning to carefully put on his gloves.
• 2:28:00
Speaker 8: It would be idle to deny that this affair has
• 2:28:05
Speaker 8: now assumed its most unpleasant aspect. Admiral Rankling, the time
• 2:28:12
Speaker 8: has come for candor on both sides. Be quick, sah,
• 2:28:17
Speaker 8: I am being quick, Rankling, I admit, with all the
• 2:28:22
Speaker 8: rapidity of utterance of which I am capable, that my
• 2:28:26
Speaker 8: assurances of last night were founded upon an airy basis.
• 2:28:32
Speaker 5: In plain words, lies, mister Quackett.
• 2:28:37
Speaker 8: A habit of preparing election manifestos for various members of
• 2:28:41
Speaker 8: my family may have impaired a fervent admiration for truth,
• 2:28:45
Speaker 8: in which I yield to no man.
• 2:28:48
Speaker 1: Rankling advancing in a determined manner very well, Sah, Quackett, retreating.
• 2:28:55
Speaker 8: One moment, Rankling, one moment, if not two, I glean
• 2:29:01
Speaker 8: that you are prepared to assault, tor chastise well to
• 2:29:07
Speaker 8: inconvenience a man at whose table you feasted last night.
• 2:29:12
Speaker 8: Do so, I will do so, I say, do so.
• 2:29:19
Speaker 8: But the triumph when you kneel upon my body, for
• 2:29:23
Speaker 8: I am bound to tell you that I shall lie down,
• 2:29:26
Speaker 8: the triumph will be mine.
• 2:29:28
Speaker 5: You are welcome to it, Sah. Put down that umbrella?
• 2:29:34
  Speaker 8: What for I.
• 2:29:36
  Speaker 5: Haven't an umbrella.
• 2:29:39
Speaker 8: You haven't allow me to leave this room, my dear Rankling,
• 2:29:42
Speaker 8: and I'll beg your acceptance of this one.
• 2:29:45
Speaker 1: Rankling advances fiercely. Quackett retreats. Miss diot enters Caroline.
• 2:29:51
Speaker 11: Stop, Admiral Rankling if you please. Any reprimand physical or
• 2:29:56
Speaker 11: otherwise will be administered to mister Quackett at my hands.
• 2:30:02
Speaker 8: I would have preferred Rankling. Rankling, I could have winded.
• 2:30:07
Speaker 1: He goes out quickly, Miss Diot following in pursuit. Verer.
• 2:30:13
Speaker 5: I am in my own house, Madam.
• 2:30:17
Speaker 1: Missus Rankling enters carrying the broken bust.
• 2:30:20
Speaker 16: Emma, go to pad Archibald, Rankling. Attend to me. Don't
• 2:30:26
Speaker 16: roll your eyes, but attend to me.
• 2:30:30
Speaker 5: Alma, your tone is dictatorial.
• 2:30:35
Speaker 16: It is meant to be so, because after seventeen years
• 2:30:39
Speaker 16: of married life, I am going to speak my mind at.
• 2:30:42
Speaker 1: Last, Holding up the head before him.
• 2:30:48
Speaker 3: Archibald, look at that?
• 2:30:51
  Speaker 5: What's that?
• 2:30:53
  Speaker 8: Myself?
• 2:30:55
Speaker 16: Less than ten years ago? The sculpture's earliest.
• 2:30:58
Speaker 5: Effort, broken, made of bad stuff. Send it back.
• 2:31:05
Speaker 16: It is your memory I wish to send back, Ah Archibald.
• 2:31:10
Speaker 16: Do you see how round and plump those cheeks are?
• 2:31:15
Speaker 5: Paper Walter, you're start then I was in both days.
• 2:31:22
Speaker 16: I was thin, frightfully.
• 2:31:26
Speaker 5: Very well. Then the average remains the same. Some day
• 2:31:31
Speaker 5: we may return to the old arrangement.
• 2:31:35
Speaker 16: If you ever find yourself a spearman again, Archibald, it
• 2:31:39
Speaker 16: won't be because I have worried and fretted you with
• 2:31:42
Speaker 16: my peevish ill humor, Alma, as you have worried and
• 2:31:47
Speaker 16: worn me with yours.
• 2:31:50
Speaker 5: Emma, you have completely lost your head.
• 2:31:54
Speaker 1: She raises the broken bust.
• 2:31:56
Speaker 5: I don't mean that confounded bust. That was an ideal.
• 2:32:02
Speaker 16: And if a mere sculpture could make your wife an ideal,
• 2:32:06
Speaker 16: why shouldn't you try so understand me? Finally, Archibald, I
• 2:32:12
Speaker 16: will not be ground down any longer unless some arrangement
• 2:32:16
Speaker 16: is arrived at for the happiness of dear Dina and
• 2:32:19
Speaker 16: mister paulover. I leave you, love me.
• 2:32:25
Speaker 5: This very day, wantonly desert your home and husband and all.
• 2:32:32
Speaker 1: Yes covering his face with his handkerchief, and I don't.
• 2:32:37
Speaker 5: Know where to put my hand upon even a netpie.
• 2:32:42
Speaker 16: And the world shall learn how highly you thought of
• 2:32:45
Speaker 16: Dina's marriage at mister Quackett's party last night. Oh, and
• 2:32:51
Speaker 16: what a very different man you have always been in
• 2:32:54
Speaker 16: your own home. And take care, Archibald, that the verdict
• 2:32:59
Speaker 16: of posterity is not that you are less a husband
• 2:33:02
Speaker 16: and father than a tyrant and oppressor.
• 2:33:07
Speaker 1: Quackett enters with Miss Diard in pursuit. She follows him
• 2:33:10
Speaker 1: out er Rakling blows his nose and wipes his eyes
• 2:33:15
Speaker 1: and looks at Missus Ragling.
• 2:33:17
Speaker 2: Emma, Emma, oh dear, oh.
• 2:33:23
Speaker 5: Dear Emma, don't talk your head under your arm in
• 2:33:30
  Speaker 5: that way.
• 2:33:31
Speaker 1: She puts the broken bust on the table.
• 2:33:34
Speaker 5: Emma, there have been grave faults on both sides, yours
• 2:33:40
Speaker 5: I will endeavor to overlook.
• 2:33:45
Speaker 3: Now you are your dear old self again.
• 2:33:49
Speaker 5: But Emma, you are occasionally an irritating woman to live with.
• 2:33:55
Speaker 16: You are the first who has ever said that so.
• 2:34:00
  Speaker 5: Short a mama.
• 2:34:02
Speaker 11: And poor Dina. You will forgive her.
• 2:34:07
Speaker 5: On condition that she doesn't see Paul over space again
• 2:34:12
  Speaker 5: for five years.
• 2:34:15
Speaker 16: Oh, there will be no difficulty about that.
• 2:34:19
Speaker 1: Reginald and Dinah enter. She is dressed for flight.
• 2:34:23
Speaker 2: Papa my father in law.
• 2:34:26
  Speaker 1: They retreat hastily.
• 2:34:28
Speaker 5: Who let you out? O let you in?
• 2:34:32
Speaker 1: He goes out after them. Missus Rankling follows.
• 2:34:35
Speaker 16: Archiboldt continue, your dear old self.
• 2:34:41
Speaker 1: Quackett enters by another door, Miss Diot following him. Both
• 2:34:44
Speaker 1: out of breath, they look at each other, recovering themselves.
• 2:34:51
Speaker 8: I understand that you wish to speak to me, Caroline.
• 2:34:57
Speaker 11: Oh you you paultry. You mean ungrateful little creature, you
• 2:35:06
Speaker 11: laced up, little heap of pompous pauperism. You you I
• 2:35:12
Speaker 11: cannot adequately describe you, wretch.
• 2:35:16
Speaker 1: Quackett putting on his gloves again.
• 2:35:19
Speaker 8: Have you finished with me, Caroline?
• 2:35:21
Speaker 11: Finished with you? I shall never have finished with you,
• 2:35:26
Speaker 11: never till you leave me.
• 2:35:30
Speaker 1: Quackett rising, till I leave you, till you leave me
• 2:35:35
Speaker 1: a widow. Quackett resuming his seat, disappointed.
• 2:35:40
Speaker 11: Oh you don't think I expect you to leave me
• 2:35:44
Speaker 11: anything else. Oh what could I have seen in you?
• 2:35:49
Speaker 8: I take it, Caroline, that in the language of the
• 2:35:51
Speaker 8: hunting field, you scented a gentleman.
• 2:35:56
Speaker 11: Scented a gentleman. In a few weeks of our men,
• 2:36:00
Speaker 11: I have scented you and cigaretted you, wined you, and
• 2:36:04
Speaker 11: liquored you, tailored and hatted and booted you. I have
• 2:36:08
Speaker 11: darned and mended and washed you, grueled you with a cold,
• 2:36:12
Speaker 11: tinctured you with a toothache, and linimented you with the goat.
• 2:36:17
  Speaker 11: Have I not?
• 2:36:18
  Speaker 1: Have I not?
• 2:36:21
Speaker 8: You certainly have had exceptional privileges. Familiarity appears to have
• 2:36:26
Speaker 8: fulfilled its usual functions, and bread.
• 2:36:29
Speaker 11: The most utter contempt. Have I not paid your debts.
• 2:36:35
Speaker 8: Not at my suggestion, and all for what I assume,
• 2:36:42
Speaker 8: for love's dear sake, carry.
• 2:36:45
Speaker 11: For the sake of having the vastal seclusion of Alumnia
• 2:36:49
Speaker 11: College telegraphically denominated as bachelor Diggings.
• 2:36:55
Speaker 8: Any collection of young ladies may be so described. Dription
• 2:37:00
Speaker 8: is happy, but harmless. That's for the subsequent conflagration.
• 2:37:05
Speaker 11: Don't talk about it.
• 2:37:08
Speaker 8: I say with all sincerity that from the moment the
• 2:37:11
Speaker 8: fire broke out till I escaped, no one regretted it
• 2:37:15
  Speaker 8: more than myself.
• 2:37:17
  Speaker 2: That was Tyler.
• 2:37:19
Speaker 11: Tyler what Tyler? I make no historical reference when I
• 2:37:24
Speaker 11: say what Tyler? Was it who abruptly tore aside the
• 2:37:27
Speaker 11: veil of mystery which had hitherto shrouded the existence of
• 2:37:31
Speaker 11: champagne and lobster salad from four young girls? It was you.
• 2:37:37
Speaker 8: No, it wasn't Carrie, upon my word, upon my honor.
• 2:37:45
Speaker 8: Those vexing pupils played the very devil with me after
• 2:37:50
Speaker 8: you left. The pupils, as it were, dilated.
• 2:37:54
Speaker 11: Yes, and you ordered them champagne glasses. I suppose, Oh, oh, deceiver.
• 2:38:02
Speaker 8: You talk of deception. What about the three o'clock train
• 2:38:05
  Speaker 8: from Paddington?
• 2:38:06
Speaker 11: It was the whole truth.
• 2:38:08
Speaker 8: There was one, but you didn't travel in it. What
• 2:38:13
Speaker 8: about the clergyman's wife at Hereford?
• 2:38:16
Speaker 11: Go there? You will find several, but you're not staying
• 2:38:20
  Speaker 11: with them.
• 2:38:22
Speaker 8: Oh Carrie, how can you meet my fearless glance? When
• 2:38:24
Speaker 8: you recall that my last words yesterday were cabman, drive
• 2:38:29
Speaker 8: to Paddington. The lady will pay your fare?
• 2:38:32
Speaker 11: I cannot deny that it is by accident you have
• 2:38:35
Speaker 11: discovered that I am Queen Honoren in Otto Bernstein's successful
• 2:38:40
  Speaker 11: comic opera.
• 2:38:42
Speaker 8: And what do you think my family would think of that?
• 2:38:47
Speaker 11: It is true that the public now know me as
• 2:38:50
  Speaker 11: Miss Constance della.
• 2:38:52
Speaker 8: Porte, Oh, Miss Constance de la Porte, the.
• 2:38:58
Speaker 11: New and startling, contrast her first appearance.
• 2:39:03
Speaker 8: And have I a quacket after all, gone and married
• 2:39:08
Speaker 8: a connie you have?
• 2:39:12
Speaker 11: It is true too, that last night, while you and
• 2:39:15
Speaker 11: my pupils were dilating, I was singing I, and at
• 2:39:20
Speaker 11: one important juncture dancing, no no, not dancing madly, desperately,
• 2:39:30
  Speaker 11: hysterically dancing.
• 2:39:33
Speaker 8: And to think if there was any free list, that
• 2:39:37
Speaker 8: my brother Bob may have been there.
• 2:39:39
Speaker 11: But do you guess the one thought that prompted me
• 2:39:43
Speaker 11: buoyed me up guided my steps and ultimately produced a
• 2:39:47
Speaker 11: lower g of exceptional power. No the thought that every
• 2:39:54
Speaker 11: note I sang might bring a banknote to my lonely
• 2:39:58
  Speaker 11: vere at home.
• 2:40:00
  Speaker 8: Carry.
• 2:40:02
Speaker 11: I went through the performance in a dream. The conductor's
• 2:40:06
Speaker 11: battern beat nothing but vere vere vere into my eyes.
• 2:40:12
Speaker 11: Some one applauded me. I thought, Ah, that's worth a
• 2:40:16
Speaker 11: new head to Veer. I sang my political verse. A
• 2:40:20
Speaker 11: man very properly hissed, he has smashed Veer's new hat.
• 2:40:25
Speaker 11: I murmured. At last came my important solo. I drew
• 2:40:30
Speaker 11: a long breath, saw a vision of you reading an
• 2:40:33
Speaker 11: old copy of the Rock by the fireside at home,
• 2:40:36
Speaker 11: and opened my mouth. I remembered nothing more till I
• 2:40:40
Speaker 11: found myself wildly dancing to the refrain of my song.
• 2:40:44
Speaker 11: The audience yelled with approbation. I bowed again and again,
• 2:40:48
Speaker 11: and then tottered away to sink into the arms of
• 2:40:51
Speaker 11: the prompter with the words ver catchier Carry.
• 2:40:57
Speaker 8: But my family, my brother, Bob, what.
• 2:41:01
Speaker 11: Have they ever done for you? While I it was
• 2:41:06
Speaker 11: my ambition to devote every penny of my salary to
• 2:41:10
  Speaker 11: your little ones.
• 2:41:12
  Speaker 8: And isn't it.
• 2:41:15
Speaker 11: No, dear Albany, But quacket. It isn't the moment I
• 2:41:21
Speaker 11: dragged you down that leather last night and left behind
• 2:41:24
Speaker 11: me the smoldering ruins of Volumnia College. I became an
• 2:41:29
  Speaker 11: altered woman.
• 2:41:31
Speaker 8: Then I will lay the whole affair before my family do.
• 2:41:35
Speaker 11: And tell them to what your selfishness has brought you.
• 2:41:38
Speaker 11: That where there was love, there is disdain. Where there
• 2:41:42
Speaker 11: was claret, there will be beer. Where there were cigars,
• 2:41:46
Speaker 11: there will be pipes, And where there was pool there
• 2:41:49
Speaker 11: will be keno Oh.
• 2:41:52
Speaker 8: Why didn't I wait and marry a lady.
• 2:41:56
Speaker 11: You did marry a lady, but scratch the lady and
• 2:42:01
Speaker 11: you find a hard working comic actress. Be silent, madam ah.
• 2:42:09
Speaker 11: This is my revenge veal quackered. Tonight I will dance
• 2:42:14
Speaker 11: more wildly, more demonstratively than ever.
• 2:42:19
  Speaker 8: I forbid it.
• 2:42:20
Speaker 11: You forbid it. You dictate to Constance Tella Porte, the
• 2:42:26
Speaker 11: hit of the opera, I am Queen Hooreen.
• 2:42:31
Speaker 1: She slaps her hands and sings with great abandonment, and
• 2:42:34
Speaker 1: in the pronounced manner of the before Queen, the song
• 2:42:37
Speaker 1: she is supposed to sing in Bernstein's opera.
• 2:42:40
Speaker 23: Reen Reen Horeen Mighty were the wife of Queen fir Marula,
• 2:42:46
Speaker 23: never seen and reen Reallah.
• 2:42:49
Speaker 8: I will write to my married sisters dieu.
• 2:42:53
Speaker 11: And I will call upon them man's boasting, threatening humor,
• 2:42:57
Speaker 11: smoking alcohol, consumer quick of temper, ill of humor.
• 2:43:02
Speaker 8: Oh, you shall sing this to my family.
• 2:43:05
Speaker 1: I will with her hands upon her hips.
• 2:43:09
Speaker 11: Woman has no pet devices, cuts her sins in good
• 2:43:12
Speaker 11: thick slices, with the smile that sweet and nicest ooh.
• 2:43:17
Speaker 1: Refrain, singing and dancing.
• 2:43:21
Speaker 23: Reen reen on the rehen mighty wed the wife or
• 2:43:25
Speaker 23: queen firm rule and never seen and reen reen Lah.
• 2:43:34
Speaker 1: She sinks into a chair.
• 2:43:35
Speaker 8: Oh, I will tell my brother of you.
• 2:43:40
Speaker 1: Daylight appears through the conservatory doors. Missus Rankling and Dinah enter.
• 2:43:45
Speaker 1: Malory and Peggy enter from conservatory, spooning.
• 2:43:48
Speaker 16: My dear missus Cricket, I owe everything to you. My
• 2:43:53
Speaker 16: treatment of the dear Admiral has had wonderful results. What
• 2:43:57
Speaker 16: do you think The Admiral and mister paul Over are
• 2:44:01
Speaker 16: quite reconciled and to understand each other perfectly.
• 2:44:05
Speaker 1: Rankling and paul Over enter glaring at each other and
• 2:44:08
Speaker 1: quarreling violently in undertones.
• 2:44:11
Speaker 16: Look, the Admiral already regards him as his own child.
• 2:44:17
Speaker 1: Saunders Ermtrude and Gwendolen enter and joined Peggy and Mallory.
• 2:44:21
Speaker 10: But we ought to be separated for five years. Oh Reggie,
• 2:44:25
Speaker 10: you trust me implicitly, don't you.
• 2:44:27
Speaker 18: I do, And that is why I warn you never
• 2:44:30
Speaker 18: to let me hear of you addressing another man.
• 2:44:32
Speaker 1: Oh Reggie, they embrace.
• 2:44:35
Speaker 5: Don't do that. You don't see maybe having in that
• 2:44:39
Speaker 5: way to Missus Rankling, and we've been married foring.
• 2:44:42
Speaker 1: Else, Missus Rankling. To Dinah, But you and.
• 2:44:47
Speaker 16: Mister paul Over are to be allowed to meet once
• 2:44:50
  Speaker 16: every quarter.
• 2:44:52
Speaker 18: Yes, in the presence of Admiral Rankling and a policeman.
• 2:44:57
Speaker 1: Missus Rankling, Rankling, Dinah and redg join the others. Otto
• 2:45:01
Speaker 1: Bernstein enters quickly and excitedly, carrying quantity of newspapers.
• 2:45:06
Speaker 12: I beg your pardon. I must see Miss Constance Telaport,
• 2:45:11
Speaker 12: I mean miss diot.
• 2:45:13
Speaker 11: Mister Bernstein, your house.
• 2:45:17
Speaker 12: Is burned down. It does not matter. You have made
• 2:45:22
Speaker 12: a great hit in my new orat, I mean my
• 2:45:25
Speaker 12: comy opera. I have been walking up and down Fleet
• 2:45:31
Speaker 12: Street waiting for the Babis to come.
• 2:45:34
Speaker 1: Out, handing round all the newspapers.
• 2:45:38
Speaker 12: Their dimes, their telegraph, their daily news, their standard, the boss,
• 2:45:47
Speaker 12: the chronicle. They are all complimentary except one, and that
• 2:45:53
