- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Namaste, and welcome to the Divas That Care Network.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: My name is Jiraquel Rose, owner of Airs Above Yoga, and you are listening to Above the Ground Podcast.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: If this is your first time tuning in, our network is in its 16th year and listened to in over 30 countries.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: I'd like to personally thank you for giving me the gift of your time.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: As always, it is my honor to hold space with N for you.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: And as you can see from the window behind me, the days are indeed on their way to shortening.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: So as we enter fall, um, you know, it is a favorite season of mine.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Depending on where you live, you may not experience the full-fledged uh transition of seasons, but you know, it's something that a lot of cultures honor.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: We are one um here on the East Coast of the United States of America.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think that fall really is, I think it has to do with the school season starting back up and people returning from vacation.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: And, you know, you can go into the history of the harvest and all of that, but it really always just feels like a homecoming a little bit, not to steal that from all the high schools that have their homecoming in fall, but it really does speak to that for me in some way or another.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Um, the leaves and the cider or the pumpkin spice, if you're one of those girls or boys, which I am not, but um, you know, the pumpkins and the candles and you know, it's just a it's a fan favorite, right?
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Like I think people who live in areas that experience the changing foliage really do appreciate it.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: People travel to go and experience the changing foliage and um all the beauty that it entails as the as nature does its thing, right?
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: This this beautiful thing that we get to experience wherever we are in whatever capacity.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: So a moment of gratitude for that.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: And to talk a little bit about this nutrition episode and the idea of collaboration.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: So I did an episode similar to this when I first started this podcast, and I thought, one, it'd be nice to revisit.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Two, I'm gonna go off on a little spiel as I often have a tendency to do.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Um, but on this idea of collaboration, there are some foods that are better together, right?
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think that, you know, a lot of people eat them anyway without realizing that the two different foods actually complement each other from like a nutritional perspective and actually help with either the absorption or the digestion of the different types of elements that are found in that particular food that are good or healthy for your body.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Um, so I will touch on those, but I want to talk a little bit first about the collaboration idea.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: So, as I mentioned on one of my earlier episodes in this uh this series, I believe, I did a little thing where um I had an amazing group of people join me in opening up a yoga studio locally uh in the area where I live.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And as fall kicks off and people start to kind of get into a rhythm or a groove from the from the summer into that kind of transition, you know, we were having conversations and for me it was a really big theme of because I am big on habits and I am big on I have some OCD, so I'm big on organization of how to, you know, set yourself up for success in a in a personal way by your daily habits really affecting how you get through your day.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And I will be the first to tell you like, I am so tired right now.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: I have overcommitted myself on such an insane level that it is dark while I film this podcast, and and I still want to have the discipline to come here and do this and stay consistent.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: That is highly important to me.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: So I'm not gonna say, oh, there's no light behind me.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna do it.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna make an excuse and not show up.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: That being said, when it comes to this idea of setting yourself up for success, let's just say that I am case in point of it being a work in process, right?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Like you're not, you can't start from zero and and beat a hundred and just nail it like out of the gate.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Maybe some people can and power to them, and I all the claps, all the snaps, all the things.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: But for the average bear, right?
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Um, it's an it's a it's a it's a practice, just like yoga is a practice.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: It's not like someone goes to the yoga studio and then they fall into a split, right?
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: And unless they're either potentially hyperflexible or have studied some other modality.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Nine times out of ten, you have to work at it, right?
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: It it's something that is an ongoing thing.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: And so, in that idea, it was very important to me to kind of look at the seasons and look at the idea of nutrition, and not just from a food perspective, but like nourishing.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: So I'll go from nutrition to nourish and how you can nourish yourselves.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And the reason for this is because September is a very, very hectic month in the area that I live.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: I'm sure it's like that for many people.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Um, October gets a little bit calmer, maybe, and then the holidays, right?
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: So it's this idea of when does when does the carousel kind of stop?
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: When when do I get off the ride?
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: When do things calm down?
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And I think the lie we tell ourselves is that they will, and but they don't.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: And maybe you get a week or two of of a break here and there, maybe you get a weekend where you have nothing on the calendar, maybe.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Um, and then you just breathe, and maybe you stay in bed, maybe you have a bed day, and again, power to you, if that's if that's something that rest is very important.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: But the reason that I bring this up is the idea of collaboration and supporting each other.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: And we are it is going to be from not just a diet and nutrition perspective, but I do think that it helps.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a massive argument to be made for accountability and a massive argument to be made for, you know, doing something with someone.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: You know, there could be an element of healthy competition, right?
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Like I think that there's there's competition gone wrong, right?
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Where it's not healthy.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: And then there's competition that, you know, that can be a little bit inspiring.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: I remember when we first came out with Fitbits, right?
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Like even before I think the Apple Watch, or maybe, maybe I just had a Fitbit first.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: I can't remember.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Forgive me.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: I'll I did not bother to Google that.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Um, but essentially, you know, I remember being in like a challenge with a group of other girls, and we were trying to, we were competing on our daily steps.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: And my my significant other at the time was laughing at me because I was like jogging in place next to bed because one of the one of the ladies that was participating was a nurse.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: And so she got like 20,000 steps every day, and there was no way that you could be her.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: But again, it wasn't coming up from a place of of underhanded or undercutting competition.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: It was it was like a do better, right?
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Like it was like a be better, like challenge yourself, and and here's this inspiration.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: So I do think that like not all competition is bad competition, right?
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: It it it allows us to excel.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: So, in this whole vein and with this podcast thread going through this series and simultaneously with me trying to come up with a way to get people to want to improve their habits and want to improve their health and well-being, and maybe a little bit for me, because some of these things on on the list that I'm gonna share, not with not right now, but shortly, um, come from things that I'm not great at, like getting eight hours of sleep every night or drinking over 64 ounces of water, you know, not fluids, but water in a day.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: So there are things that I think most humans can say, oh yeah, that's that's good for me, and yeah, I don't I need to do better, right?
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: So we'll get to the food pairings, but I do want to say that this idea of kind of a a cultivate healthy habits before the holidays came through as something very significant for me.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: And the reason for that is because generally around the holidays, things fall apart.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Guests come, events occur, holiday plans, depending on what you celebrate.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: There might be Christmas presents involved, there might be tree prepping, there might be, you know, the amount of extra things that come onto the plates of our very blessed positions to be in in right to so coming from a place of gratitude for the fact that we get to celebrate with fan friends and family and that we're in a position to to do so, right?
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: To to spend time, to spend money, to be with people, right?
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Um, but our plates get even more full around the November, December.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Again, if you live in this area, right, or you celebrate these these holidays.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: There's a plethora of different holidays that fall fall into this category.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: So if you have, it takes 21 days to build a habit, for those who do not know, and there's there's a couple books on this.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: One that I've read that I love is The Power of Habit.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Um, please check it out if this is at all of interest to you.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: And so in talking with with you know some some people, some of the instructors, and and just having this kind of conversation and trying to figure out how to how to put this all together, came up with a little mini challenge that we will be launching October 1st.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: So anyone is welcome to participate online.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do it as a little studio challenge as well.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we'll I'll happily share that on my uh Airs Above Yoga social media.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: But the idea behind this is now's the time, not in January.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: So everyone's big on resolutions, and I've never been a New Year's resolution person because I think that when you know better, you should do better.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: So that resolutions once a year are not necessarily, you know, that's very helpful to any time you want to do better is great.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: So no shade on those people that use January 1st as a time.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: But for me, in order to set someone up for success, the time is before all of that added stress occurs because stress takes us right into the present moment, but in a way that's like I'm not gonna say the actual word, but an effort way, where it's like, I just can't, and you eat the bag of chips, or I just can't, and you drink the bottle of wine, or I just can't, and the discipline flies right out the window because there's so much else going on that in that moment you fall victim to your own, you know, just immediate need for something to feel better, right?
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Like just get me out of this moment, whether it's through a bag of chips or a bottle of wine or any other potential way, workaholics, gym holics, I work out all the time to get myself out of my own head.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: So there are multiple ways to do this.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Some are more healthy than others.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: The idea behind this little challenge is to instill these habits October 1st for six weeks.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: So if it takes 21 days to build and you have about six weeks before the holidays between the beginning of October and November, well, wouldn't that be a great time to start to make some healthier choices so that foundation and that groundwork is laid for you by the time the stress of potentially Thanksgiving or the upcoming festivities in the month of December start to start to become real and timely and in front of your face.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: So that's what this challenge is all about.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And I will share more of it on Airs Above Yoga.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Um, as this was this is my Airs Above Yoga YouTube, but this is also the Above the Ground Podcast social media platform.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: So this is going to be a little bit of a collab, like an internal collab, right, for this particular challenge for anyone and everyone who's interested.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: I just want people to be able to be inspired to make choices that make them feel better so that they can be better versions of themselves for themselves first and for their loved ones and the world second and third.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: So I hope this helps and it might be a little bit fun.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: And for those who are in the studio or in the area, that we will have some prizes to go along with it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: But it's that idea of having that accountability, having someone kind of like not keeping track in a bad way, but someone saying, All right, yeah, you like cheerleaders, like cheerleading you to do to make better decisions, make good choices, as one of my friends always used to say to me when I hung off the phone, make good choices.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of a make good choices kind of a challenge.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: So keep an eye out for that upcoming.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Um, and know that the the inspiration behind it is truly coming from a place of love and support prior to the descent into madness that is the holidays in this in this hemisphere.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: So, all of that being said, I thank you for letting me share that with you and getting into ways that you can support.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: So now we're talking back about like the food and the nutrition aspect, like the cult the foods that tend to collaborate as opposed to compete.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna start with ones that you know you may have guessed, but one of the top, one of the top ones, tomatoes and olive oil.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Now, if you're paleo or if you're on an anti-inflammatory diet, please bear in mind the tomato is a nightshade.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: So it does have inflammatory aspects to it.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: So that needs to be something that you take into consideration so that you are aware that you know, sometimes these foods that are healthy in one vein are not healthy for you.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: And I always say your diet, your body, your choice, your preference, please, please, please.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: And you know, if you have a tomato allergy, don't eat tomatoes, that type of thing.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Use your judgment, use your discernment.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's an idea of how the healthy fats in olive oil can help your body absorb the nutrients in the tomato, right?
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: And so that's what a lot of these food pairings come down to.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and a lot of them also involve, you know, foods that I've talked about ad nauseum because they are generally lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's that's just kind of that's that's the jam.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: That's the jam.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Although I will say that as a complete food, for those of you who do not consume animal products, beans and rice, great pairing.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: They go together for for a reason, not just because Sir Mix a lot mentioned them, but because they do, they are a complete, like nutritionally balanced pairing.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: So beans and rice are another one that are on that list for you.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: That if you are not now on a paleo diet, both of those are right out the window.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: You can't have legumes and you can't have grains.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: But should you be vegetarian, vegan, or otherwise, uh, and a fan of carbohydrates or I should say complex carbohydrates, but have at it because those two go very, very well together.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And if you are somewhere in the middle, like a pescatarian, um, some cruciferous vegetables like kale or broccoli pair quite well with salmon.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: And the reason for that is that some, you know, calcium in in cruciferous vegetables is basically required for the vitamin D that comes from, you guessed it, salmon.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Not to mention the the healthy omegas, etc., that come from fish.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: So depending on where you are in your diet, there are ways, right?
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: So there's something for everyone.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: If you're vegetarian, beans and rice, if you're pescatarian, salmon and kale, or salmon and broccoli, or salmon and cauliflower, right?
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Like those, those were all will all pair very, very nicely together.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Um, another one is, and I've said this one before.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: So I know I've mentioned golden milk.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Huge fan of golden milk.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: If you haven't tried it, it's essentially like it is an acquired taste, and it definitely comes from a very high Ayurvedic background, right?
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: So it's an turmeric is an anti-inflammatory herb spice, whatever you want to call it, spice, I believe.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's often paired with ginger, which also has anti-inflammatory benefits.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: But what's cool is black pepper actually brings out some of the, I believe it's curcumin.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Please don't judge me for saying that improperly, but I believe that's how you pronounce the main anti-inflammatory ingredient found in turmeric.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: So just a little bit of a pinch of black pepper will help to have the body absorb that.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: The other thing that helps, and this is why golden milk or golden milk lattes are a thing, is because turmeric can be, you know, it's not a chill spice.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: It's a pretty aggressive flavor.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: It's it's curry adjacent, I will say.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: So it's it's hefty.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: It's not like cinnamon where it's got that warm dessert kind of vibe or clove.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: It's more of the line of uh savory almost.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: So, in order to make a beverage out of it, uh, generally you also want to provide you guests a healthy fat.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: So a lot of people will use, I believe traditionally, because I believe traditionally in Ayurveda, they they recommend cow's milk.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: Obviously, if you are not having dairy um or you don't drink cow's milk, coconut milk is a great alternate for that because it has that really healthy fat within it.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: And that again helps the body to absorb some of the nutrients.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: Also, add into that ginger if you like, you can add cinnamon if you like to cut the cut the turmeric, kind of blend it, and also above all, honey.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: So it can be a lovely before bedtime kind of anti-inflammatory.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: I'll say beverage.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say tonic, but it is, it really is, it has that amount of benefit to the body, assuming that you are comfortable with all those things, but you can't forget to add that little pinch of black pepper.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: So remember that it is something that that that supports the space, right?
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's gonna A help you fall asleep.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: The warm, you know, you and obviously please heat it up.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: This is something that you put in a in a warm mug, perfect for fall, froth it up if you have a frother.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Um, make sure that you add the honey because that'll that'll really give it that nice earthy sweetness.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Um, and then the cinnamon andor ginger, you could do both.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: It might be a little overwhelming.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: I prefer cinnamon to ginger when it comes to this, but if you, you know, to each their own.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: So depending on your flavor profile preference, you may want to try one or both.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: But it is nice to have something to balance out the turmeric flavor because, like I said, it can be a little bit aggressive for those people that aren't already like a big fan of it.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: So the other the other thing is citrus.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Citrus actually helps with a couple different things.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's really mostly any variety of citrus, but um the idea is that the vitamin C actually helps to absorb, right?
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: It can absorb and it can stabilize.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: So think of the think of the vitamin C and lemons as the carrier, right?
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: So that's what's bringing nutrients into into the body from the other food.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: And one of them, a big one, is spinach.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: So if you pair citrus with spinach, think orange slices in your salad, think lemon juice in your vinaigrette dressing, right?
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Something like that is a great way to again just boost those compounds, boost away so that when you're having and making these healthy choices, you're actually compounding on the amount of nutrients that you're getting and making it easier for easier for your body to absorb them.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: It's a it's a collaboration, it's a win-win, right?
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: Um, as I said, they also kind of go in hand in hand with each other.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: So they also pair well.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: You know, listen, here's the thing: lemon in general, it it goes well with most things.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: It is, I drink lemon juice almost every morning.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Um, I can put, I will have a bottle of, you know, the very, very bitter, straight up pure lemon juice in a glass bottle.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: I'll put that in my water during the day.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: I'll make warm water with lemon and honey, sometimes in the winter, in my teacup and bring it with me throughout throughout the day.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Lemon water is is hydrating, right?
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: For people that just get bored with water, it's super, it just adds to it.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: It only helps the body unless you have like a tomato allergy, a lemon allergy.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: But unless you have some reason why lemon is not a part of your diet, it takes very little to buy a bottle of organic glass, maybe not from concentrate, but straight up lemon juice, not the lemonade, but the lemon juice, and just start adding it to everything that you possibly can.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: It's not, let me rephrase, not everything you possibly can, but things that it will pair well with, or adding it to your water, adding it to, you know, I believe there's even an argument for adding it to like soup stocks, right?
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: It just it's so versatile.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: And generally speaking, it only adds to the health benefits of whatever else it is that you are eating for the most part.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Now, obviously be mindful lemon is acidic and it can wear away at the tooth enamel, so everything has.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Downside.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: So maybe you want to drink it into your drink your lemon water with a straw, but not a straw that's going to harm a sea turtle.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: So make sure it's a washable and reusable straw.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: If you can, please be mindful.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: We love our sea turtles.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Um, it's also, you know, if we're talking about drinking with it, it also goes very, very well.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: It cuts in.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Um, I've actually had issues in the past where when I drink green tea, it gives me a little it it doesn't always agree with me.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Not matcha, but just certain types of regular green tea, like in a tea bag.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Um, and lemon with green tea is actually a wonderful pairing for the same reason it does kind of facilitate.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Um, lastly, for those with a little bit of a sweet tooth, oftentimes people will pair fruit and nuts.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: This is a thing that happens forever.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I do it, lots of people do it.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Two that I want to highlight one, traditional, tried and true, apples and I'm gonna say almond butter for the same reason that the paleo argument.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Apples and peanut butter are the tradition, right?
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Apples and peanut butter always.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: But apples and almond butter reduce the legume concern, right?
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: So any sort of nut butter and apple has that same kind of doubling up the benefit, the health benefits of both.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: The other one, the coup de gras blueberries and walnuts.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: So if you always tend to go for blueberries in the store, and I don't know why, but I've always been a big fan of blueberries.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: You know, whether I buy the frozen ones and throw them in a smoothie, or whether I actually like sit down with a bowl of them, consider adding some chopped walnuts because that's only going to boost the brain health benefits.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: So there's more, but I think these are some of the main go-to, easy to remember, easy to incorporate ways that you can start to pair foods together and get them to a place, get yourself to a place of conscious eating that helps you again make better choices so that you feel better.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Maybe eventually you start to even look better, right?
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: If you're if that's something that you're concerned with, it does feel good, right?
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: To to look good, to feel good, to again work towards being your your best self, whatever that is for you.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Um, and I hope that these little nuggets of information, you know, help to inspire you a little bit.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: And you know, the food is, you know, food is medicine.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: I didn't coin that.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Lots of people say that there are books with that title, but you know, if you are if you are eating unconsciously, then your body is gonna pay the price tag, and over time it can pay a hefty one, depending on how how unconsciously you're eating.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: And that's not to ever shame anyone for their choices, it's just a matter of knowing better and doing better.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and even then you can cheat.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: So I have I have cheated.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: I'm it the problem is coming from inside the house.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: It is me, I will tell you.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: Recently, I have cheated on my paleo diet.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: I've had fried, battered, not gluten-free chicken fingers a few times.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: And the reason for that is because I missed them so much, and I luckily didn't really have a reaction, but I knew what I was doing, I made the conscious choice to cheat, I did.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and in other episodes, I've said, you know, you're only cheating yourself, and I stand by that, it's 100% true.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: But I also will say that it is a slippery slope, like anything else.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Once you start, it's easy to do it that second time, right?
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: So having that hard stop really is an element of discipline that I think is important.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Um, because once I ordered them once, it was not that challenging to order them a second time.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: That being said, the cheat was a little bit minimal.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: It it was it was gluten, it was fried.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: It's not your best choice, but it was a a decent amount of protein, right?
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: And they are they are handmade, so they're they're special, they're not like out of a out of a frozen box.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: But I'm gonna make that little confession to you guys because I just want to share with you that you're still human, you still live in this world, right?
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: The holidays are still gonna come and you're still gonna say, screw it, and drink the bottle of wine.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Or the other night I ate a bag of chips.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Again, paleo-friendly chips, but I ate a bag of chips.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: And why?
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Because I was exhausted and tired.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: And as I said, I'm I've overcommitted myself for a number of different reasons, and and stress gets to you.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: And a lot oftentimes you tend you people, not you, but people can have a tendency to eat their feelings, drink their feelings, right?
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Escape, escape their feelings in a vice, whatever that vice may be.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: And sometimes it's eating a bag of chips at nine o'clock at night in your bed.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: And it might not be a diet sheet, but it's definitely not your best choice.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: So here are some of the reasons why I decided to come up with you know this kind of make a choices challenge.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Because it's just about doing a little bit better every day.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: And on the days that you need the chicken fingers, well, I did it.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: I ordered them, they were delicious.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: I didn't regret it once, I didn't regret it at all.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: I didn't, and I may order them again, but I'm not gonna make a habit out of it every day.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Get it?
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Do you see what I did there with the habit?
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: So think about the choices that you make every day, and think about how the impact of them over time either helps you or potentially harms you.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Because at the end of the day, the only one who knows that I cheated on my diet is me and whatever higher power you believe in, if you believe in one.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: So again, you're only working against yourself.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: And sometimes, like I said, there's an emotional aspect to you know what, I want the chicken fingers.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: I've had a day, and I want chicken fingers, and sometimes you just have to meet yourself while you're.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: So I I encourage you guys to a participate in a challenge that gets you to to start to cement those healthier habits and those healthier decision makings into your day, if that's something that matters to you.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: And also forgive yourself and meet yourself right the you know what, where you are, so that when you do embark on ways to better yourself, you actually have a fighting chance.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Because otherwise, if you do hold yourself to some sort of unattainable standard, you are only you're only you're only gonna disappoint yourself, right?
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: So forgive yourself if you ordered and ate the chicken fingers, forgive yourself if you drank the bottle, forgive yourself if you ate the chips, and you know, the next day, maybe instead of chips, have some blueberries and walnuts because it's a better choice.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: On that note, I want to tell you how much I appreciate each and every one of you for sharing this space with me.
