- 0:02Speaker 2: And we are back. Yes we are.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Charlie Strickland with me from the Talent Training Group. Remember
- 0:07Speaker 1: on Saturdays on these fine radio stations Telling Outdoors with
- 0:11Speaker 1: the JD and they're growing cast.
- 0:14Speaker 2: And you can add us to your iHeart Favorite menu,
- 0:18Speaker 2: right presets. Yeah, I mean if the preset WFLA, you
- 0:22Speaker 2: just preset right there, talent out that on the way
- 0:25Speaker 2: in this morning, I was listening to you and I said,
- 0:27Speaker 2: there's a what And I looked up on my phone
- 0:29Speaker 2: that was stuck to me.
- 0:30Speaker 1: It's a cool feature.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I clicked on it and WFLA isn't a number
- 0:34Speaker 2: one spot. Now.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I love the fact that you can set all the
- 0:37Speaker 1: podcasts you enjoy, all the shows anything else that you
- 0:40Speaker 1: like on iHeart right there on those presets.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I got to look at it a little bit more.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But so now you have a plan now when you
- 0:45Speaker 1: turn on iHeartRadio.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I yeah, I love that our show streams,
- 0:53Speaker 2: you know, and every now and then I'll go back
- 0:54Speaker 2: and listen to an old show and I go, I'm
- 0:56Speaker 2: no smarter today than I was years ago. We got
- 0:59Speaker 2: three hundred not like you, Preston, I know, but we're
- 1:02Speaker 2: a weekly show and We're a spin off of you know.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Think of the Jeffersons and All in the family. I'm
- 1:08Speaker 1: the All in the family and they're the Jeffersons. Okay,
- 1:11Speaker 1: maybe not.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Anyway, we're uh so, we've got three hundred and ninety
- 1:20Speaker 2: eight shows, I think something like that. A lot of
- 1:23Speaker 2: what are on YouTube now as well. So I don't
- 1:27Speaker 2: know why anybody want to see us. But every now
- 1:30Speaker 2: and then Paul will talk about a fish or something
- 1:32Speaker 2: somebody caught, and I'll throw up a photo or you know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: we'll talk this big yeah, yeah, so we you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: of course, if you hope that's all forced perspective.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I tried to set you up there because we were
- 1:46Speaker 1: talking about now you you you've got a plan for
- 1:49Speaker 1: when you've got the iHeartRadio app on, and that was
- 1:51Speaker 1: the topic of the day, coming to the range with
- 1:54Speaker 1: a plan.
- 1:54Speaker 2: So we you know, and I've been wanting to do
- 1:56Speaker 2: this for a long time and I just haven't. We
- 1:58Speaker 2: used to shoot videos, and for a long time I've
- 2:01Speaker 2: been meaning to do training videos. So when you come
- 2:05Speaker 2: to the range, you can literally scan a QR code
- 2:10Speaker 2: for this old folks, that's a barcode, but with a
- 2:12Speaker 2: new shape and you take a picture of it, and
- 2:14Speaker 2: it's got a link pops up and you click on
- 2:16Speaker 2: that and it goes to a YouTube page or some website,
- 2:20Speaker 2: and so you can look ahead of time and come
- 2:22Speaker 2: to the range with a plan. And I want to
- 2:25Speaker 2: do now that I'm saying I'm going to do it.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I have to go do it now because I've been
- 2:29Speaker 2: procrastinating for about now. You're committed in about two years,
- 2:32Speaker 2: and I have everything in place to do. I just
- 2:34Speaker 2: want to go out and do some basic shooting drills.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So okay, if you're going, here's what happens. People go, hey,
- 2:40Speaker 2: let's go to range today. Yeah, and they show up
- 2:42Speaker 2: and they get all their guns out and they go
- 2:43Speaker 2: shoot all their guns and they learn absolutely nothing. But
- 2:48Speaker 2: it's fun. Okay, they shoot some they poke some holes
- 2:51Speaker 2: in some paper, But what do they get out of it? Well,
- 2:53Speaker 2: it's fun. It's it's like going to the ferry and
- 2:55Speaker 2: ride and ride. Oh I had so much fun. I
- 2:58Speaker 2: mean what came from it? Well, I mean if it's
- 3:02Speaker 2: a date, obviously, you know you're getting to know somebody.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But if it's just you know, it's you're building memories.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And you can do that to range However, you should
- 3:11Speaker 2: take every opportunity when you shoot your guns to do
- 3:14Speaker 2: some training. But that takes you thinking, and most people
- 3:18Speaker 2: have no idea how to train with firearms. So when
- 3:21Speaker 2: you go to the range, have a plan. Say Okay,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I'm gonna shoot my concealed carry gun today, or I'm
- 3:27Speaker 2: gonna work with this gun. I carry on keeping the
- 3:29Speaker 2: night stand in a safe matter of fact, I've got
- 3:32Speaker 2: one of these little push buttons save blah blah blah.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Take it to the range, set it on a picnic table,
- 3:37Speaker 2: you know, practice stand a few feet away, walk over
- 3:40Speaker 2: the beat, beep, open it up, get the gun, shoot
- 3:42Speaker 2: a particular drill, get some dummy rounds from the shop,
- 3:47Speaker 2: do reload drills, malfunction drills. What happens that you know
- 3:50Speaker 2: to tap rack bang? What happens if it doesn't work?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Say today, we're gonna work on this and take the family,
- 3:56Speaker 2: the spouse, whatever, the friends, and go today. We're going
- 3:59Speaker 2: to get a time and we're going to see how
- 4:01Speaker 2: fast we can do two shots malfunction, two shots malfunction.
- 4:06Speaker 2: We're going to work on this stuff. If you show
- 4:08Speaker 2: up without a plan, I mean, if you go, if
- 4:11Speaker 2: you go on vacation. You kind of have an itinerary, right, Okay,
- 4:14Speaker 2: we're going to go to let's say Disney, we're going
- 4:16Speaker 2: to ride these rides and then we're going to do this.
- 4:18Speaker 2: You should do the same thing at the range.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Plan your work and work you're plan.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yes, So I think I see so many people come
- 4:28Speaker 2: out and and I see them post videos, and I
- 4:32Speaker 2: love that you go to range. You know, you're sharing
- 4:35Speaker 2: the fact you're there. You're announcing to you know, your friends,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and you know, okay, that's fine, but I just see
- 4:42Speaker 2: random holes in a piece of paper. The best training
- 4:46Speaker 2: you can do with a handgun is on shooting steel. Yep, okay,
- 4:50Speaker 2: the value of shooting steel. So you go and say, okay,
- 4:53Speaker 2: I want to get one of the steel base. And
- 4:55Speaker 2: both of our ranges have three or four steel bays
- 4:59Speaker 2: on it. Okay, So sometimes they're busy, but they're generally
- 5:03Speaker 2: open and people will come out and they're just gonna
- 5:05Speaker 2: plink and they go get a paper range and they
- 5:07Speaker 2: shoot some paper targets, and that's fine. There's a place
- 5:10Speaker 2: for that as well. But once you start to really train,
- 5:14Speaker 2: you go down and get on the headplates or the
- 5:16Speaker 2: silhouette and you do drills, challenge yourself, work from concealment.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I love getting on a timer because it puts pressure
- 5:24Speaker 2: on you and you push the button, it'll pause for
- 5:28Speaker 2: a second and it'll go beep, and then you draw
- 5:31Speaker 2: and say you get over next to the headplates. I'm
- 5:33Speaker 2: gonna knock down two headplates and then I'm gonna shoot
- 5:36Speaker 2: the silhouette over here, or I'm gonna shoot the silhouette
- 5:38Speaker 2: twice and then shoot one of the headplates, and then
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know immediately whether you do it. And the value
- 5:44Speaker 2: of shooting steel is that you can see your hit
- 5:47Speaker 2: if you take some white spray paint down. We generally
- 5:50Speaker 2: have some cans in the shop, but go to anywhere
- 5:52Speaker 2: you want to buy some white spray paint. Spray paint
- 5:54Speaker 2: up your targets first, because then you'll see the witness mark.
- 5:57Speaker 2: When the bullet hits a steel Yep, you'll see a
- 5:59Speaker 2: grace spot. Okay, So you get visual feedback. Your brain
- 6:03Speaker 2: sees that that hit was where you meant it to
- 6:06Speaker 2: be or not. You hear the ding. You may see
- 6:10Speaker 2: the plate fall if it's a plate rack. If it's
- 6:12Speaker 2: one of the hostage targets, the headplate swings around.
- 6:15Speaker 1: We'll see that vibrate all it.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So you get visual and audio feedback. And what happens
- 6:21Speaker 2: is when you're whatever your body was doing at that
- 6:23Speaker 2: point in time, then your brain sees the positive result
- 6:28Speaker 2: and it's almost like a timestamp. Yes, everything I did
- 6:31Speaker 2: was correct, correct, correct. That was a miss that was wrong,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and then you think about it, what I do wrong?
- 6:36Speaker 2: You go back and you fix it. You're programming yourself
- 6:39Speaker 2: to shoot accurately and to put your body in your
- 6:42Speaker 2: body position and your grip and all those things in
- 6:44Speaker 2: the side alignment. Everything you were doing, you're teaching yourself
- 6:47Speaker 2: to do it correctly. But also you can work from
- 6:49Speaker 2: behind cover. You can shoot off hand, you know, just
- 6:55Speaker 2: with your support side hand.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I want to go go to the paper target for
- 6:58Speaker 1: just a second here, because you guys have added inside
- 7:01Speaker 1: the range in the pro shop. There you've got a
- 7:05Speaker 1: basically an enlarged version of dot Torture. I love that
- 7:09Speaker 1: target for a paper target that gets some training done.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Mike got those printed up. We print
- 7:16Speaker 2: all of our own targets, yep. We have a big
- 7:19Speaker 2: plotter and we print the fire out of targets. That
- 7:23Speaker 2: printer is constantly running which is good because it's one
- 7:26Speaker 2: of our highest profit margin items. But it's getting getting
- 7:31Speaker 2: something like that to where you are challenging yourself. You
- 7:37Speaker 2: know what I used to do it it's SWAT training.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I'd go up on a blank target and I would
- 7:42Speaker 2: just take a piece of a roll of masking tape
- 7:44Speaker 2: in the magic marker and draw a circle. Doesn't have
- 7:47Speaker 2: to be complicated. You're out on the farm shooting or something,
- 7:50Speaker 2: or your piece of property, get a paper plate, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 2: just whatever. Find something to shoot, but think about not
- 7:57Speaker 2: only accuracy, speed, your movement, tactics, cover, but come up
- 8:03Speaker 2: with something you're going to do. The whole point of
- 8:05Speaker 2: it is it doesn't matter if what's your shooting or
- 8:07Speaker 2: what your conditions are. Have an idea and then visualize
- 8:11Speaker 2: how would how would a real life scenario If you
- 8:14Speaker 2: see something in the news, Okay, try to think through
- 8:18Speaker 2: that real life scenario. The the shooting in Gaston County.
- 8:22Speaker 2: It was a tragic shooting where some arm thud comes
- 8:26Speaker 2: through and murders two people.
- 8:27Speaker 1: In convenience story, what are you doing?
- 8:29Speaker 2: You're at the gas pump's pumping gas and the guy
- 8:32Speaker 2: walks out in a parking lot and points a gun
- 8:34Speaker 2: at you. How do you move to cover? You know,
- 8:37Speaker 2: most of those places have sheds and steal columns make
- 8:40Speaker 2: pretty good cover to gas pumping not so much. But hey,
- 8:43Speaker 2: you know, could you move around the vehicle? Could you draw?
- 8:46Speaker 2: Where's your gun? Is it in the car? How do
- 8:48Speaker 2: you get to You know, you can come out of
- 8:49Speaker 2: a range and pull your car up and you know,
- 8:52Speaker 2: work out of your car. You just have to talk
- 8:54Speaker 2: to the staff about you know, could I want to
- 8:56Speaker 2: arrange I can pull my car out there and we're
- 8:58Speaker 2: not responsible for cut tires on brass and rubber tires,
- 9:01Speaker 2: but you can do that and then you can work
- 9:02Speaker 2: from your car. I challenge everyone that comes out to
- 9:07Speaker 2: do something that get get a little winded. Everybody used
- 9:10Speaker 2: to criticize another local range that was a very private club.
- 9:13Speaker 2: You can't do push ups and jog and do things
- 9:15Speaker 2: like that and then shoot, you can't hear you know,
- 9:18Speaker 2: be somewhere like absolutely put yourself under a little bit
- 9:22Speaker 2: of stress, not too much. We do have an a
- 9:24Speaker 2: D so you know for old folks like us, just
- 9:28Speaker 2: uh yeah, if you're going to do that and you've
- 9:31Speaker 2: got a condition, you might want to let the staff
- 9:33Speaker 2: know to keep an eye on you, just to get hey.
- 9:35Speaker 2: If I'm still too long, come check on me. So
- 9:39Speaker 2: I think it's real quiet down on Beaten you know,
- 9:42Speaker 2: come check on me.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But have a plan.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Have a plan.
