- 0:00Speaker 1: Good morning, faithful listeners, and welcome to the Bible Explain Podcasts.
- 0:03Speaker 1: On this lovely Tuesday morning. We're going to be in
- 0:06Speaker 1: the last portion of First Thessalonians five today talking about
- 0:09Speaker 1: Paul's instructions for the lay people that includes you and me.
- 0:14Speaker 1: So we'll see if the Bible has to say about
- 0:15Speaker 1: this in just a moment, So, faithful listeners, I could
- 0:25Speaker 1: use some prayer. I'm not going to go into it
- 0:27Speaker 1: too much because I'm not gonna complain to you guys,
- 0:30Speaker 1: but there's a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes
- 0:33Speaker 1: that is making doing this podcast very difficult for me
- 0:38Speaker 1: right now. A lot of tech issues, a lot of
- 0:41Speaker 1: software problems, not to mention, like ninety percent of my
- 0:44Speaker 1: podcast was unavailable last week and even now only eighty
- 0:50Speaker 1: percent of my podcast is still available. You can't find
- 0:53Speaker 1: seasons one and half of two anywhere, and uh yeah,
- 0:57Speaker 1: it's just there's a lot going on software wise. And
- 1:01Speaker 1: I don't usually like to throw around the term spiritual warfare,
- 1:04Speaker 1: but I truly am feeling it right now. I'm feeling it,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and not to mention, I am sick again, and this
- 1:13Speaker 1: is something that has been happening to me as you
- 1:15Speaker 1: guys know, every two to three months, I am getting sick.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I get a fever, a sore throat, a cold, or
- 1:23Speaker 1: a flu, not to mention all the stomach problems that
- 1:25Speaker 1: I've been having these past couple years. This has been
- 1:29Speaker 1: going on now for two years, and this is not normal.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm getting sick as often as
- 1:35Speaker 1: I am. And you know, my immune system is just
- 1:39Speaker 1: broken right now. It's like broken right now, and it's
- 1:42Speaker 1: very very frustrating. Let me just tell you that. So
- 1:46Speaker 1: if you guys could pray for me, and I told
- 1:48Speaker 1: you at the beginning, I'm not going to complain proceeds
- 1:50Speaker 1: to complain. If you guys could pray for me, that
- 1:53Speaker 1: would be very helpful. I think there's a lot of
- 1:56Speaker 1: spiritual warfare going on in my life right now and
- 2:00Speaker 1: it's discouraging. So if you guys could pray for me
- 2:04Speaker 1: to be encouraged, pray for the tech problems to end
- 2:10Speaker 1: over here on the Bible explained, and also pray for
- 2:14Speaker 1: my health, I'd be very appreciative of all that. But
- 2:18Speaker 1: let's go ahead and read for Theesseelonians five twelve through
- 2:24Speaker 1: fifteen today. I thought we would finish for Theeselonians five today.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But I was wrong. It turns out there's a lot
- 2:31Speaker 1: to talk about in verses twelve through fifteen. I think
- 2:34Speaker 1: it's an important thing to discuss because it's about the
- 2:38Speaker 1: role for the average congregant. What is our job when
- 2:43Speaker 1: we go to church. We do have a job, actually,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and Paul talks about it right here. So I'll be
- 2:48Speaker 1: reading from the web as usual, but feel free to
- 2:51Speaker 1: grab the version of the Bible that you prefer. Let's
- 2:53Speaker 1: go ahead and read first Thesselonians five twelve through fifteen.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But we beg thank you, brothers, to know those who
- 3:01Speaker 1: labor among you and are over you and the Lord,
- 3:04Speaker 1: and admonish you, and to respect and honor them in
- 3:06Speaker 1: love for their work's sake. Be it peace among yourselves.
- 3:10Speaker 1: We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fate hearted,
- 3:14Speaker 1: support the week, be patient toward all, See that no
- 3:17Speaker 1: one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow
- 3:20Speaker 1: after that which is good for one another and for all.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I often talk on this podcast about the problems that
- 3:28Speaker 1: pastors often have and how you know when you go
- 3:31Speaker 1: to a church you should be very careful about who
- 3:34Speaker 1: your pastor is, what he's preaching, and how he's treating people.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I talk about that quite a bit on the podcast,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but something I talk a little bit less about is
- 3:43Speaker 1: the responsibility of the congregants, because congregants do have a
- 3:47Speaker 1: responsibility toward their pastor also. So we're going to get
- 3:50Speaker 1: into that. And by the way, Paul is closing out
- 3:53Speaker 1: this letter here. This is the last portion of First
- 3:56Speaker 1: Theissonians five today, so we're finished with this book almost.
- 3:59Speaker 1: But it says an verse twelve, we beg you, brothers,
- 4:02Speaker 1: to know those who labor among you and who are
- 4:05Speaker 1: over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to
- 4:08Speaker 1: respect and honor them in love for their work's sake.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Paul there is addressing the congregants themselves, not the pastors
- 4:16Speaker 1: this time, but the congregants. He says, we beg you, brothers,
- 4:21Speaker 1: to know those who labor among you. In other words,
- 4:24Speaker 1: to recognize the leaders that they are not just living
- 4:28Speaker 1: the high life, but they actually have a labor that
- 4:31Speaker 1: they are doing, and it's a difficult labor. It's not
- 4:34Speaker 1: an easy labor. In fact, Paul says, to honor them
- 4:37Speaker 1: for their work's sake, because they are doing a hard job.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You know, pastors really do have a very, very difficult job.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I think some people think that pastors have it really easy,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and that might be the case in you know, certain circles,
- 4:52Speaker 1: some churches, but the average pastor of a small congregation
- 4:57Speaker 1: has a very difficult job because that pastor has to
- 5:02Speaker 1: take care of the spiritual needs of however many people
- 5:06Speaker 1: they have in their church. The pastor gets calls all
- 5:11Speaker 1: the time from people in crisis. He has to counsel people,
- 5:15Speaker 1: probably without any pay. He's got to be at the
- 5:18Speaker 1: church anytime there is a problem, not to mention having
- 5:22Speaker 1: to patiently deal with conflict on a daily basis, and
- 5:27Speaker 1: even get into uncomfortable conversations with people about their sin
- 5:33Speaker 1: or maybe something that they are doing wrong. You know,
- 5:36Speaker 1: in the case of my brother in law, who is
- 5:38Speaker 1: a pastor, my sister's husband, he will be working at
- 5:42Speaker 1: the church at like midnight, finishing up projects that other
- 5:46Speaker 1: people weren't able to do. You know, my brother in law,
- 5:49Speaker 1: he's always at the church. He's always on a call
- 5:52Speaker 1: with somebody, always just working very hard for the people.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Pastors do not have it easy, which which is why
- 6:00Speaker 1: Paul tells the congregants to honor and respect and love
- 6:05Speaker 1: their pastors. So what does this mean, Well, this means
- 6:08Speaker 1: to respect what your pastor has to say, to love
- 6:14Speaker 1: him and his family, to want to support him in
- 6:17Speaker 1: his family. Doesn't necessarily have to be with finances. It
- 6:20Speaker 1: can be through labor. Maybe you see your pastor at
- 6:24Speaker 1: the church at like ten o'clock at night doing something
- 6:27Speaker 1: that other people could do, Maybe you could take that
- 6:30Speaker 1: opportunity to volunteer for that position so your pastor does
- 6:33Speaker 1: not have to do it, you know, taking some loads
- 6:36Speaker 1: off of your pastor and off the pastor's wife even
- 6:39Speaker 1: as well. That is what loving and respecting your pastor means.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And also it means not correcting your pastor for every
- 6:47Speaker 1: little thing, not playing devil's advocate for every little thing.
- 6:52Speaker 1: There's a really good quote by Spurgeon that I actually
- 6:55Speaker 1: have attached to my computer because it really impacted me
- 6:59Speaker 1: as somebody who is very critical. And if you guys
- 7:02Speaker 1: watch my discussions episodes I do with my sister, you
- 7:04Speaker 1: will know I'm quite a critical person. So here's the
- 7:07Speaker 1: quote by Spurgeon. The firmest believers are exercised with unbelief,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and it would be doing the devil's work with a
- 7:14Speaker 1: vengeance if they were to publish abroad all their questionings
- 7:18Speaker 1: and suspicions. I feel like that is a really good quote,
- 7:22Speaker 1: because every single person has questions and suspicions, even if
- 7:27Speaker 1: they are the firmest believer on the planet. Some of
- 7:30Speaker 1: us naturally like to play devil's advocate, right, Spurgeon actually says,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you're doing the devil's work if you publish abroad all
- 7:39Speaker 1: of your questionings and suspicions. Now that's not to say
- 7:43Speaker 1: if you see a legitimate concern that you don't present it,
- 7:47Speaker 1: that you don't bring it forward. Obviously you do. Like
- 7:49Speaker 1: if you see your pastor engaging in a blatant sin
- 7:53Speaker 1: that is outlined in scripture, then yes, you bring that forward.
- 7:58Speaker 1: You go to the elders of your church and talk
- 8:01Speaker 1: about that, because that's not acceptable. We don't tolerate sin. Right,
- 8:05Speaker 1: But when it comes to really small things that are innocuous,
- 8:10Speaker 1: such as the way the pastor might word something, or semantics,
- 8:16Speaker 1: or just something that your pastor did that you don't
- 8:18Speaker 1: really like, like for example, changing the coffee bar. And
- 8:23Speaker 1: I used that example because that was something I was
- 8:28Speaker 1: irritated about, like a year ago. Our church actually had
- 8:31Speaker 1: this coffee bar that I helped set up about five
- 8:34Speaker 1: years ago. And I went into the church one Sunday
- 8:38Speaker 1: last year and the coffee bar was just gone, Like
- 8:41Speaker 1: it was completely changed. It was over in the corner.
- 8:44Speaker 1: There was no more like tables and chairs, like everything
- 8:47Speaker 1: was different. And I was really irritated about that. I'm like,
- 8:50Speaker 1: why did we change that? It was perfect the way
- 8:53Speaker 1: it was before. And I was kind of stewing over it.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie, And my husband's like, Jen, is
- 8:58Speaker 1: this really something to be this angry about, Like I
- 9:01Speaker 1: feel like you need to check yourself. That's what my
- 9:04Speaker 1: husband told me, and I did. And to be fair,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I still don't really like the coffee set up at
- 9:09Speaker 1: our church, but I do see and understand why they
- 9:12Speaker 1: changed it from where it was before the way it
- 9:15Speaker 1: is now. It has a more open floor plan where
- 9:18Speaker 1: people can kind of gather together instead of, you know,
- 9:22Speaker 1: the coffee area kind of taking up a bunch of space.
- 9:25Speaker 1: So thankfully I had a husband who was telling me
- 9:27Speaker 1: that I was overreacting about something that didn't matter that much.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Because say I didn't have my husband say that, I
- 9:34Speaker 1: was super irritated about that coffee bar, I probably would
- 9:37Speaker 1: have gone to my pastor and been like, why did
- 9:39Speaker 1: you change this? This is ridiculous. You know, it was
- 9:41Speaker 1: better the way it was before, and that would have
- 9:44Speaker 1: just been an extra burden placed on my pastor's shoulders
- 9:48Speaker 1: about something that really, in the grand scheme of things,
- 9:51Speaker 1: does not matter that much. So we don't place unneeded
- 9:55Speaker 1: burdens on our pastors either. We have to be very
- 9:59Speaker 1: careful with how we are treating him. You know, the
- 10:01Speaker 1: pastor already has so many burdens he's dealing with because
- 10:05Speaker 1: he has to think about his own family and himself,
- 10:09Speaker 1: but also every single member inside his church. And that's
- 10:14Speaker 1: why Paul says in verse twelve that he begs, begs
- 10:18Speaker 1: the congregants to show love to the pastor, to not
- 10:22Speaker 1: bring every little irritation to him, not criticize his every move,
- 10:28Speaker 1: but just show him kindness and thank him for the
- 10:31Speaker 1: hard work. Actually, Paul says, honor him for the hard
- 10:35Speaker 1: work that he is doing. And this goes for all
- 10:37Speaker 1: the church leaders, not just the pastor, but for the elders,
- 10:42Speaker 1: for the teachers, and anyone else who has a prominent
- 10:45Speaker 1: role in the church. Honor them and respect them. And
- 10:49Speaker 1: as Paul begs the congregants to do this thing, I
- 10:52Speaker 1: also beg you guys to do the same thing to
- 10:56Speaker 1: your pastors and your teachers and your leaders in your
- 10:59Speaker 1: church as well. We show them honor and respect. And honestly,
- 11:02Speaker 1: if you can't do that, like if you are going
- 11:05Speaker 1: to a church where you don't respect the pastor where
- 11:07Speaker 1: you don't respect the leaders, then honestly, I do encourage
- 11:12Speaker 1: you to find a church where you can respect those people,
- 11:16Speaker 1: because in the long run you're probably going to be happier,
- 11:20Speaker 1: and also the pastor and leaders of the church will
- 11:23Speaker 1: be happier as well. Now, if you find yourself in
- 11:26Speaker 1: a situation where you never respect the pastor or the
- 11:30Speaker 1: elders of any church that you go to, well, at
- 11:33Speaker 1: that point in time, it might be a good idea
- 11:37Speaker 1: to pray to God and help him reveal to you
- 11:40Speaker 1: why you are struggling to respect the authority of every
- 11:45Speaker 1: church you've ever been to, and he might reveal something
- 11:48Speaker 1: that's in your heart. But just remember in the meantime
- 11:51Speaker 1: that respecting authority figures whether they're spiritual authority or governmental authority.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That's a command straight from scripture, we are to honor
- 12:01Speaker 1: our leaders, the people who God placed over us. And
- 12:06Speaker 1: then Paul says in verse thirteen, be at peace among yourselves. Now, obviously,
- 12:12Speaker 1: if you show honor and respect to the people it's due,
- 12:17Speaker 1: you're gonna have more peace both with yourself and with
- 12:21Speaker 1: everybody in your church as well, including your pastor and
- 12:25Speaker 1: your leaders. Then in verse fourteen, we exhort you brothers,
- 12:28Speaker 1: admonish the disorderly, encourage the faint hearted, support the weak,
- 12:34Speaker 1: be patient toward all. See that no one returns evil
- 12:38Speaker 1: for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which
- 12:40Speaker 1: is good for one another and for all. So not
- 12:44Speaker 1: only do the church leaders have a responsibility to the church,
- 12:51Speaker 1: but actually each member of the church has a responsibility
- 12:54Speaker 1: to each other. Everybody these days kind of thinks that
- 12:58Speaker 1: church is supposed to be run by one person and
- 13:02Speaker 1: we just show up on Sunday morning and then we leave.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But it's clear in scripture that church is so much
- 13:08Speaker 1: more than that. It's not just something we go to
- 13:11Speaker 1: once a week on Sunday mornings and then we leave
- 13:14Speaker 1: and then we don't really think about it throughout the week,
- 13:16Speaker 1: and we go back the next Sunday. It's much much
- 13:19Speaker 1: more than that. When we go as congregants, as lay people,
- 13:24Speaker 1: we are to encourage and admonish our brothers and sisters
- 13:28Speaker 1: in Christ. We are to be the hands and feet
- 13:32Speaker 1: of Jesus. You know, the pastor has a bigger responsibility,
- 13:35Speaker 1: but we also have responsibilities as well to each other.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Paul says, admonish the disorderly. So the word admonish obviously
- 13:44Speaker 1: means to gently correct somebody, put them on the right path.
- 13:49Speaker 1: So if somebody is being disorderly in the church, and
- 13:53Speaker 1: that's not to mean that they're disorganized, which I guess
- 13:55Speaker 1: that could be part of it. But when Paul talks
- 13:58Speaker 1: about order in the church, which is mentioned in First
- 14:01Speaker 1: Corinthians fifteen, I think, if I am remembering correctly, I
- 14:06Speaker 1: might be wrong about that. But it's in one of
- 14:08Speaker 1: the Corinthians where Paul talks about order in the church
- 14:12Speaker 1: and he mentions that there is a clear way church
- 14:16Speaker 1: is supposed to be done. So let me actually let
- 14:19Speaker 1: me find that. Pass it drill quick, Okay, I was close.
- 14:26Speaker 1: It was First Corinthians fourteen twenty six through thirty three.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And here's what this says. What is it, then, brothers,
- 14:33Speaker 1: when you come together. Each one of you has a psalm,
- 14:36Speaker 1: as a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, or
- 14:39Speaker 1: has an interpretation. Let all these things done, or let
- 14:42Speaker 1: all these things be done to build each other up.
- 14:44Speaker 1: If a man speaks in another language, let there be
- 14:46Speaker 1: two or most three, and in turn let one interpret.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent
- 14:52Speaker 1: in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and
- 14:54Speaker 1: to God. Let two or three of the prophets speak,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and let the others discern. But if the revelation is
- 15:00Speaker 1: made to another sitting by, let the first be kept silent.
- 15:03Speaker 1: For you can all prophesy one by one, that you
- 15:05Speaker 1: all may learn and be exhorted. The spirits of the
- 15:08Speaker 1: prophets are subject to the prophets, for God is not
- 15:11Speaker 1: a god of confusion, but of peace, as in all
- 15:14Speaker 1: the assemblies of the saints. So that is how church
- 15:18Speaker 1: is supposed to be done. Basically, it's not everybody talking
- 15:21Speaker 1: all at once, It is not everybody remaining silent just
- 15:25Speaker 1: listening to one person speak the whole time. Instead, it's
- 15:29Speaker 1: something right in the middle, where people go up and
- 15:33Speaker 1: present a psalm, present a teaching, a revelation, a song,
- 15:39Speaker 1: maybe a tongue or an interpretation or a prophecy of
- 15:43Speaker 1: some sort, and these people just kind of go up
- 15:46Speaker 1: one by one and present these things. So, according to
- 15:50Speaker 1: Paul's interpretation of how church should be done, the congregation
- 15:54Speaker 1: has a role in all of this. Now, needless to say,
- 15:58Speaker 1: you know, unfortunately, or is not done this way at
- 16:02Speaker 1: least not too often. But a lot of churches do
- 16:05Speaker 1: try to follow some semblance of this. For example, there's
- 16:09Speaker 1: scriptural readings, or the congregation might take part in that.
- 16:12Speaker 1: There's corporate worship, there's readings from scripture, there's a message
- 16:18Speaker 1: from the pastor or from the associate pastor, there's a greeting.
- 16:23Speaker 1: So churches do have some amount of order to them.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Whenever Paul talks about somebody being disorderly, it's somebody who
- 16:31Speaker 1: is not falling in line with the order that the
- 16:34Speaker 1: church has. Somebody speaking out or being rude while somebody
- 16:38Speaker 1: else is sharing or just in general being distracting during
- 16:42Speaker 1: church or disorderly in some way. Paul says we need
- 16:46Speaker 1: to admonish that type of behavior. He also says we
- 16:50Speaker 1: need to encourage the faint hearted. So it would be
- 16:52Speaker 1: anybody who is scared to share their faith, not super bold,
- 16:57Speaker 1: encourage them to be bolder. He says, we need to
- 17:01Speaker 1: support the week. I would imagine this would be anybody
- 17:04Speaker 1: who can't support themselves, so the fatherless, the widows, or
- 17:08Speaker 1: the sick. And then in verse fifteen, we need to
- 17:10Speaker 1: make sure that no one returns evil for evil. So
- 17:13Speaker 1: nobody shows revenge to anybody for a hurt that was
- 17:17Speaker 1: done to them, but always follow after that which is
- 17:20Speaker 1: good for one another and for all. So this is
- 17:23Speaker 1: the responsibility that congregants have to each other. We are
- 17:28Speaker 1: supposed to encourage each other, admonish each other, support each other,
- 17:33Speaker 1: be patient towards everybody. I think I might have missed
- 17:37Speaker 1: that one. Actually, he says, be patient toward all. And man,
- 17:41Speaker 1: is that not hard to do? You know, when you're
- 17:43Speaker 1: at church and somebody is just irritating you for whatever reason,
- 17:50Speaker 1: it can be very hard to be patient towards your
- 17:53Speaker 1: fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. But that is what
- 17:58Speaker 1: Jesus calls us to do. He was the pinnacle of
- 18:01Speaker 1: all of these things. He admonished people, he encouraged people,
- 18:06Speaker 1: he supported people, he was patient with people, and he
- 18:09Speaker 1: taught people to live in a way that was not
- 18:13Speaker 1: self seeking, but was others focused. So in a nutshell,
- 18:17Speaker 1: as lay people, we have a responsibility in our church.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Maybe not as a big responsibility as the pastor has,
- 18:25Speaker 1: but in our own way, we have a responsibility to
- 18:28Speaker 1: each other. And it's a big responsibility because you know,
- 18:31Speaker 1: people aren't going to church just because they like the pastor.
- 18:35Speaker 1: When someone sticks at a church, it's because of the people.
- 18:39Speaker 1: It's because people were kind to them, or they feel
- 18:43Speaker 1: that they have a community at that church, and that
- 18:46Speaker 1: is all due to the average congregant. So us lay people,
- 18:51Speaker 1: we have a big role in the success of our churches. Well,
- 19:04Speaker 1: faithful listeners, I'm not gonna lie. I don't know if
- 19:06Speaker 1: there's gonna be an episode tomorrow, depending on how I
- 19:08Speaker 1: feel specifically with my voice. If I can get an
- 19:11Speaker 1: episode done, I certainly will. I actually do want to
- 19:15Speaker 1: make sure that you guys get the Bible every single day.
- 19:19Speaker 1: That is my goal with the Bible Explained podcast, So
- 19:21Speaker 1: anytime I can get an episode done, I certainly will.
- 19:24Speaker 1: But faithful listeners, I will hopefully see you guys tomorrow
- 19:27Speaker 1: for an episode around the second to chronicles and we'll
- 19:30Speaker 1: talk more about Solomon building the Temple to God and
- 19:36Speaker 1: all the things that take place with that. Faithful listeners
- 19:39Speaker 1: have a fantastic and wonderful, wonderful rest of your day,
- 19:43Speaker 1: happy listening, and God bless
