Latest / Beyond the Sermon / Advent Conversation - featuring Will Walker
Transcript
- 0:08You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:11Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:13On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:17preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:19learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:24For Advent 2025, we are in a series called Brought to the
- 0:27Light, Advent for all who need it.
- 0:29This series is looking at the themes of Advent and how Jesus
- 0:32comes to us all. You can find more information
- 0:35about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:39Thanks for joining us for this conversation.
- 0:46We've got a special treat here this week because Jeremy is in
- 0:52Mexico for the week taking care of some things in La Pamia.
- 0:57Tough life to get out of the snow and all that to enjoy some,
- 1:03you know, subtropical climates here in the week before
- 1:07Christmas. But because he's away this week,
- 1:11we have the the privilege of having Will Walker here with us.
- 1:15Will, most of you probably know as our organist, although he
- 1:20does a whole host of other things here at the church.
- 1:24But as we get started this morning, Will, and as we're
- 1:27thinking here in the Advent season, Christmas coming as we
- 1:32get started, what is one of your favorite Christmas traditions?
- 1:38One of the favorite things that I like about Christmas is, well,
- 1:42it's related to food, so. As our most.
- 1:46On Christmas morning for for a long time now, except I'm
- 1:50married almost 30 years. So we we have a Christmas brunch
- 1:53and it's just like the best. Brunch.
- 1:58Ever. So and it basically it's just,
- 2:02it's just like a ham and cheese and egg and Bisquick casserole
- 2:06with also with some homemade monkey bread and some fresh
- 2:10fruit and like, but I just look forward to that.
- 2:14Like and literally on I think on the recipe card for the monkey
- 2:17bread, it says monkey bread in parentheses says for Christmas
- 2:21morning, Will's favorite. So.
- 2:25Nice. So I think that would have to be
- 2:271 of the things that I look forward to.
- 2:28And, and honestly, like the day before, a couple days before we,
- 2:31we prepare all those things. And it's become a tradition to
- 2:34have the whole family, whoever's home now in the family, you
- 2:40know, kind of prep all of that. You got to, you know, shred the
- 2:42cheese and cut up the ham and, and get it all together and, you
- 2:45know, the, the dough for the monkey bread and things like
- 2:47that. So it's it's nice to just do all
- 2:50that together and have a busy, active kitchen.
- 2:52Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, we always.
- 2:56Cinnamon buns are our classic Rambo Christmas morning.
- 3:01And I'm not talking about cinnamon buns with a nice little
- 3:04icing drizzled across them. That's that's one thing and
- 3:08there's nothing wrong with that. But I'm talking like sticky buns
- 3:12with the caramelized gooeyness all dripping off the raisins and
- 3:19all that goodness that that is a cinnamon button in my mind makes
- 3:26me a little hungry just to I. Was I was thinking about
- 3:28thinking the same thing? I'm like, I think I might have
- 3:31to stop at a bakery on the right home or something.
- 3:36But yeah, those, those traditions, they, they shape our
- 3:40experience of Christmas. And, and I've been thinking here
- 3:43recently as we come through the Advent season again, which I, I
- 3:49mentioned on Sunday in the sermon, that I think it's, it's
- 3:54so key that churches continue to celebrate Advent.
- 3:58There are a lot of churches, especially in like the nominal
- 4:00nominational world, that kind of move away from Advent as a
- 4:05season. That's just kind of, you know,
- 4:07those talk a lot about Christmas and the preparation for
- 4:09Christmas. But I think holding on to a
- 4:11tradition like Advent is so important because the waiting,
- 4:17the longing that we talk about in Advent, the the hope, the the
- 4:24joy, the love, the peace, all that focusing on those things
- 4:27really makes our celebration of Christmas that much more
- 4:31meaningful when we actually get there.
- 4:34But one of the things I've been thinking about with Advent is we
- 4:38spend a lot of time looking back at the first Christmas, right?
- 4:44And, and we read prophecies about when Jesus was going to
- 4:47come. That kind of creates that hope
- 4:49and that longing. But I wonder, originally Advent
- 4:54was intended to remind us that Christ came, but also to keep in
- 4:59the forefront of our mind that Christ is coming again.
- 5:04And I think in a lot of our our modern celebration of Advent and
- 5:08observance of it, we do a pretty good job focusing backwards.
- 5:13Because we all like to think of the baby and the Manger, right?
- 5:16And how peaceful that was and what an amazing gift that was,
- 5:20which is all true, but like. At least to an extent.
- 5:22I don't know anybody who's actually had a baby who thinks
- 5:25that was actually a a peaceful, silent night.
- 5:27Yeah, but. How we think of it is right,
- 5:30exactly. So it wasn't literally a silent
- 5:32night, no doubt. But it's, it's, it's something
- 5:35that's easy to look back on, right?
- 5:37And pivotal, right? It changed the trajectory of
- 5:41history that Christ came and was Incarnate.
- 5:45He took on our flesh, became a real human being.
- 5:49He didn't just possess a human, but he became a human.
- 5:53That matters, and we need to remember that.
- 5:57But I don't think we do such a good job of thinking about what
- 6:01it means that Christ is coming again.
- 6:05And when you look through the New Testament, Paul and others
- 6:10write regularly about this hope we have that Christ is coming
- 6:15again, that that should be at the very centre of our focus.
- 6:20I was just kind of wondering like, why do you think in you'll
- 6:24necessarily have to have some deep theological?
- 6:26I'm still working through it myself.
- 6:27That's good. Because I probably don't.
- 6:29But but just wondering like why do you think the second coming
- 6:32of Jesus doesn't play more in our churches today?
- 6:38Because I mean, I guess if you think about it like we're in a
- 6:41continual advent up to the second coming of Jesus, right,
- 6:45right. Like we're, we're here not just
- 6:47to look back, but to look ahead. I think there's not a lot of
- 6:50people that really, really know, myself included, about what
- 6:56that's going to look like when Jesus comes again.
- 6:59So it's hard to anticipate something that we don't know
- 7:03what it's going to be. We don't even know how it's
- 7:05going to shake out other than if we're in Christ and trust in
- 7:12Christ and believe in Christ. We know the end result, but we
- 7:15don't know what's going to happen to get us there or like
- 7:18all of that. There's so much unknown.
- 7:21I think about it for the average person that it's easier to just
- 7:28not think about it, maybe. No, I think that's a great point
- 7:34because, you know, especially here in the last 50 to 60 years
- 7:41of American church, at least right, there's been such a focus
- 7:46on like a rapture theology and what happens.
- 7:50You have the left behind books or you know, a couple decades
- 7:53before that, how Lindsay wrote a book, the late Great Planet
- 7:56Earth that was kind of a 70s version of the left behind books
- 8:01that kind of said, well, if we take all this stuff in
- 8:04Revelation and kind of map it on to today's world, like how
- 8:09terrible is it going to be? Shouldn't we all do everything
- 8:12we can to get people to convert to Jesus so that way they don't
- 8:14have to go through that right? Which I think is a wrong way of
- 8:18reading all of that kind of end times Revelation stuff.
- 8:23I don't think that was what God was intending when that was
- 8:27inspired and included as part of our scriptures.
- 8:29But I think you're right. Like we don't, we don't know
- 8:31what it's going to look like. And I think for some people
- 8:34there's probably some measure of fear involved there because we
- 8:40don't know, we don't understand, we're not sure what to hope for.
- 8:43But when Jesus talked about it, you know, he, he talks about
- 8:46when he comes at the restoration of all things, when he comes at
- 8:53the, the recreation of the world, like that's, that's
- 8:57really our hope. We talk a lot in the American
- 9:00church about being saved so that when we die, we can go to heaven
- 9:03with Jesus. But that's not the ultimate goal
- 9:06of the Bible. It's not God's ultimate goal.
- 9:09God's ultimate goal is to bring heaven and earth together,
- 9:13right? Just like he intended things to
- 9:14be when he created the world he made the Garden of Eden.
- 9:17That was supposed to be kind of the, the embassy, the outpost
- 9:20out of which God's rule and reign spread out across the
- 9:25whole of creation. Obviously, if we've read some
- 9:29scripture, particularly in Genesis, we we, we recognize
- 9:33that's not what happened and that sin entered the world and
- 9:38brokenness entered the world through sin, and everything was
- 9:41changed. But it didn't change God's goal,
- 9:45which was to dwell with humanity in this intimate partnership
- 9:51through which humanity would then rule over the world, right?
- 9:56And under God's good kingship, we would actually extend that
- 10:02rule into the world. And he promises that when he
- 10:04comes, he's going to make that a reality, right?
- 10:08We talked about the new heaven and the new earth coming down.
- 10:10And that's not going to be two separate things.
- 10:14It's going to be together. God will be their God and they
- 10:17will be his people and he will dwell with them and he will be
- 10:19all the light they need and all these things that that
- 10:22revelation talks about. I think just in just getting
- 10:26back to, to people and kind of fearing what they don't know, I
- 10:30think that that is something though, that if, if you're a
- 10:34Christian, if you really are like rooted in Christ, then it
- 10:39shouldn't be that hard to get past that.
- 10:42I don't say that lightly. Like I, it just it, you know, I
- 10:46realize that, that we're, we're human and there is that fear
- 10:50and, and, and just change in general can be something that's
- 10:54brings anxiety and things like that.
- 10:56But if we're truly rooted in Christ, we shouldn't be fearing
- 10:59death, let alone Christ's coming and what that might bring, good
- 11:06or bad in the moment, you know, comfort or uncomfort in the
- 11:09moment in order to, again, to bring God's plan to fruition.
- 11:16You know, we should, we fear that.
- 11:18Should we, You know, my mind says we shouldn't, you know, and
- 11:22then the heart, you know, it's a totally different thing.
- 11:24How we actually feel is a different thing.
- 11:27But yeah, like, I think it's just easier not to think about
- 11:31it. It's easier to, again, to look
- 11:33back to that baby in a Manger. And how amazing was it that God
- 11:37gave that gift? All true, all good.
- 11:40But I mean, you know, when we started talking at the beginning
- 11:44and you would just mention the concept of Advent be looking
- 11:47ahead, not just back. Like that was kind of a shift
- 11:51even just for me because, you know, I grew up like everyone
- 11:55else grew up the Advent. Oh, we get to think back to when
- 11:58Jesus was born, right? It's not necessarily a thought
- 12:01that we, you know, need to think about.
- 12:04When is Jesus coming again? Yeah, yeah.
- 12:07And it's just, it's so interesting to me because like I
- 12:11mentioned earlier, you read through the New Testament and
- 12:14you've got Paul writing like the the letter to the Thessalonians.
- 12:18And part of the reason he wrote those letters was because the
- 12:25people there were so looking forward to the coming of Christ.
- 12:29They were so convinced that it was imminently going to happen,
- 12:33that they were they were quitting their jobs, they were
- 12:36stopping their work. They were focusing so much on
- 12:39Jesus and Bible studies and worship and those kind of things
- 12:44that they were neglecting the actual realities of this life.
- 12:48And so it's this tension that we hold, right?
- 12:52Because I think part of the reason we don't look as much as
- 12:56that is because we we've placed so much of our hopes and dreams
- 13:01on what will happen to us in this life, right?
- 13:04We think about, you know, in our heads, we say, Oh yeah, we want
- 13:08Jesus to come back. But do we want Jesus to come
- 13:12back and change things before we get married or before our kids
- 13:19get married and begin having grandkids?
- 13:22Do we want Jesus to come back before we experience this?
- 13:27You know, whatever. This year, job promotion, Dream
- 13:32vacation. You name it, whatever it is that
- 13:35we're looking forward to because there are certain things in our
- 13:38life that we're looking forward to no matter what stage we're
- 13:40in, right? Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:43I I want to see my grandkids eventually.
- 13:46Not right now, but but like I want that time to come.
- 13:52I don't want that to be interrupted.
- 13:54Yeah. Is that right?
- 13:56I don't, you know. But I but I think it's reality,
- 13:59right? It's that's, that's the tension
- 14:02we feel in our heads. Yes, we want Christ to come
- 14:05again because we know that when he does, everything will be said
- 14:09right. But if it means that things
- 14:11we've hoped for and dreamed about get cut off, do we?
- 14:16So is that even a right way to think about it?
- 14:19Or, you know, when Christ comes again and and he does all that
- 14:23work, I think it's going to be even more gloriously true than
- 14:28what we know of life today. I think it puts a spotlight on
- 14:34what are our own true goals and how should they maybe even be
- 14:41realigned or shifted. You know, like what is it that
- 14:46we truly hope for? Is it of this world or is it of
- 14:51God's new Kingdom? God's plan and and look, maybe
- 14:55His plan is for us to live out the rest of our mortal lives on
- 14:59this earth prior to Jesus coming.
- 15:00You know what I mean, right? Right, but a lot of Christians
- 15:03have lived their life since Paul worked in the Thessalonians.
- 15:06Exactly. But if you knew that Jesus was
- 15:08coming next week, would you be happy about it or would there be
- 15:12a little disappointment? And I have to say, you know,
- 15:16it's only seems natural, only seems human for there to be some
- 15:20disappointment, which is crazy to say because like, why should
- 15:26there be any disappointment in Jesus second coming as
- 15:29Christians? It's just, it's this whole thing
- 15:33you can't reconcile, right? Yeah, and it makes me think of 1
- 15:39of, I think, many people's favorite Christmas carols, which
- 15:44we sing every year here. We sing it every year on
- 15:47Christmas Eve. It's joy to the world, right?
- 15:49Joy to the world. The Lord is come.
- 15:53We we either forget or we never knew that that was actually
- 15:57written as a hymn about the second coming.
- 16:00Wow, I did not know that. Yeah, it was written Isaac
- 16:05Watts. And when it talks about, you
- 16:10know, joy to the world, the Lord is come.
- 16:11We we hear that through our modern English as joy to the
- 16:17world, the Lord has come let earth receive her king.
- 16:22It already happened, but it's actually in in that day's
- 16:27English, it was joy to the world.
- 16:29The Lord is coming. Prepare every heart, let every
- 16:34heart prepare him room and having a nature sing this is
- 16:38coming. It's still going to happen.
- 16:41It hasn't happened in the fullness of what God intends for
- 16:45it to be, but it will. You need to say that on
- 16:50Christmas Eve this year before we sing that hymn because look,
- 16:55I am, I'm the organist here. I have played that hymn.
- 16:58I cannot tell you how many times I've played that hymn and I know
- 17:01my hymns. I did not know that was the
- 17:03original 10 of that hymn. That is almost like, it really
- 17:08is kind of mind blowing, like everyone needs to know that,
- 17:12everyone needs to know that, and everyone needs to allow that to
- 17:16help recenter them on where their hopes really lie.
- 17:20Yeah, and don't mishear me like it also speaks to Christ first
- 17:24coming. But it's the same, the same
- 17:27tension we've been talking about of of the first coming and the
- 17:30second coming and what happened and what will happen and what
- 17:34happened in that first coming was partial.
- 17:38It wasn't the full culmination of what God intends to do in
- 17:42history, but one day it will be. And so then you get to like
- 17:46verse 3. It says no more.
- 17:48Let sins and sorrows grow N thorns infest the ground well in
- 17:52our reality, even though Jesus came.
- 17:54Yeah, they're. Still here, right?
- 17:56We're still dealing with the effects of the curse that God
- 18:00pronounced on humanity because Adam and Eve disobeyed, took the
- 18:05fruit and ate it right back in the Garden of Eden, right?
- 18:09But it continues like he comes to make his blessing slow as far
- 18:13as the curse is found. So he he's going to come one day
- 18:17and bring it in all of its fullness as far as the curse has
- 18:20impacted us. So is Christ second coming going
- 18:24to you? But he's already impacted that
- 18:28by dying on the cross, right? He's already redeemed.
- 18:32Like, again, forgiveness of sins is real because of that.
- 18:36So we can even in this present time, saying no more, let sins
- 18:40and sorrows reign, whatever, grow, because Jesus has provided
- 18:46a way for those to be washed away, but they still exist in
- 18:51this world. So you, you, you can sing that
- 18:55with on both sides, absolutely. Right.
- 18:58Absolutely. Yeah.
- 19:00And I think it helps if we we change the way we think about
- 19:05that first coming, right. Because joy to the world, Jesus
- 19:09didn't come marching in like a king on a White Horse as the
- 19:14victorious conquering king. Like many thought he would.
- 19:18Right, exactly like many thought the Messiah would.
- 19:21Exactly. He will one day, right?
- 19:23The trumpets are going to blast. Everyone's going to see every
- 19:26knee. Every knee will bow.
- 19:28Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
- 19:31It's not the way he came the first time, the first time.
- 19:36It's almost more like during World War 2 or wherever where
- 19:39they, they dropped in paratroopers behind enemy lines
- 19:44to begin to wear down the defenses and do things from the
- 19:48backside that the people on, you know, the front side of the
- 19:51battle couldn't impact. But they dropped in the
- 19:55paratroopers behind them. And it was this infiltration
- 19:58behind enemy lines to undo what the enemy was doing.
- 20:02If we think about Christmas. It's like that, yes, it changes
- 20:06things. It does.
- 20:08It makes it less nice and peaceful, right, and turns it
- 20:13more into Oh, well, Jesus is the secret weapon that was dropped
- 20:17behind enemy lines so that all that work that is now ours to do
- 20:23right can start happening. And you know, I guess that means
- 20:31that we're we're here to try to break down enemy guard and enemy
- 20:37lines and enemy, whatever anything of the enemy.
- 20:40Trying to expand the Kingdom of God, right?
- 20:44Because the, the Kingdom of God, it's not, it's not like a, a
- 20:49modern nation state where it's certain territory carved out by,
- 20:53you know, boundary lines and fences and passport checkpoints
- 20:58and, and those kind of things, right?
- 20:59It's, it's the area that is under the rule and reign of the
- 21:05King, right? And so wherever we are, if our
- 21:09lives are being lived under the authority of King Jesus, and
- 21:15that means where our lives. Intersect this.
- 21:18World that's where the Kingdom of God is right and so we're
- 21:22called to be part of of spreading that because of what
- 21:27God has already done in Jesus right in in sending him to stand
- 21:32in our place to pay the penalty for sin to.
- 21:36Redeem us. Redeem us and defeat the power
- 21:39of sin and death in His death and resurrection and the new
- 21:43life, the new creation that began.
- 21:46So that we can expand the Kingdom of God.
- 21:49Yeah, but in the meantime, until he comes again, we still live in
- 21:54a world at war, the same world at war that that Jesus was born
- 22:00into. The difference is now because of
- 22:02that work, because the Holy Spirit's been poured out, we can
- 22:06be empowered to live in a different way.
- 22:08We can be empowered to live as the people of God even though we
- 22:13live within the kingdoms of this world.
- 22:17And so these are these are some of the thoughts that have been
- 22:20swirling through my mind and, and spurred by some of the
- 22:24things I've been listening to and reading and then thinking
- 22:26about this Advent season. And I think it, it helps us even
- 22:31just this little shift of perspective of how we approach
- 22:36Advent, not just looking back, not just in gratitude for all
- 22:39that God has done, but an actual hope and anticipation for what
- 22:43Jesus is going to do when he comes again.
- 22:47And so my encouragement to you who are listening this morning
- 22:52or afternoon or evening, whenever you happen to pick up
- 22:55this podcast is to really think, what do I hope for?
- 23:01To reflect a little bit on on what you really believe God is
- 23:06going to do when he comes again. And if that elicits a responsive
- 23:13of fear or grief, offer that to him and ask him to meet you in
- 23:18the midst of that. Ask him to give you a vision of
- 23:22what he longs to do in the world that would radically transform
- 23:27the way you think about his second coming.
- 23:29The way you think about what that's going to be like, what
- 23:32it's going to mean for you and the people and things you love.
- 23:36Because it's a message of hope. It's a message of joy.
- 23:40I think he wants to transform that part of us.
- 23:44So I hope you'll give some time to thinking about these things
- 23:48over the next few weeks. We're going to take a bit of a
- 23:50hiatus from the conversations on the podcast for through
- 23:54Christmas and New Year's. Give everybody a chance to be
- 23:58more present to their families. You don't need to be listening
- 24:00to us talk any more than you already do.
- 24:02But I do hope that in this Christmas season as we finish up
- 24:07Advent, that that God would meet you in the midst of this and he
- 24:11would fill you with hope and peace and joy and love because
- 24:19Christ has come for us and Christ is coming again.
- 24:24Thanks Will for taking time to be with us this morning.
- 24:27Absolutely, and don't forget to enjoy some good food too.
- 24:31Absolutely. You know it's Christmas.
- 24:33Yeah. And to bring it back to where we
- 24:34started. Absolutely, and thank you all
- 24:38for taking time to listen.
