Transcript
- 0:00Mom, welcome back to Mommy Wood, the podcast where we dive into
- 0:06the wild, beautiful and sometimes completely crazy world
- 0:11of being both a mom and a performer.
- 0:14I am your host Emily, and if you've ever found yourself
- 0:17running on coffee, passion and the sheer willpower of a sleep
- 0:22deprived parent then you are in the right place.
- 0:26Welcome to Mommy Wood, as always, I am so happy to have
- 0:31you here. This is a solo episode as you
- 0:36could tell, and it is all about breaking up with my Rep and
- 0:41finding new reps because that has been such a hurdle for me
- 0:46and a long time coming and I feel like we don't talk about it
- 0:52a lot. So I'm going to talk about it
- 0:55and talk about my experience and maybe some red flags or green
- 1:00flags for reasons to maybe leave your Rep and green flags of
- 1:08choosing new Rep. So let's just get started on
- 1:13this little solo conversation. Yes, so I left my Rep and got
- 1:24new Rep. So I let's talk about just like
- 1:28why I, how I realized that my Rep was no longer a good fit.
- 1:33I was with an agency across the board.
- 1:37So they wrapped me both theatrically and commercially.
- 1:41And I've been with them since before the pandemic.
- 1:45So I've been with them a good chunk and and I've gotten, you
- 1:52know, decent auditions here and there up and down.
- 1:57We all know the rigmarole of getting auditions and not
- 2:01getting auditions and all of that.
- 2:04So lately I had lately meaning at least the past year, a couple
- 2:13years even my auditions commercially were nowhere near
- 2:21what I thought that they should be.
- 2:24And now I know that this is a fine line, especially for agents
- 2:27of actors just being like, I need more auditions, get me more
- 2:32auditions. So I was aware of that.
- 2:36And it was not that I was just wanting more auditions and not
- 2:42getting auditions. I think the difference between
- 2:47just wanting more auditions and actually feeling like it there
- 2:54was something missing was that I was seeing commercials and
- 3:01seeing friends and other actresses that are my similar
- 3:09type. I would see them in commercials.
- 3:12I would see them getting auditions that I was not
- 3:15getting. So of course having that
- 3:18conversation with my reps was important because I feel like I
- 3:26have a good commercial look. I have booked commercially on my
- 3:30own, so I feel like something wasn't quite adding up.
- 3:35I have been non union, so I like that was part of it that I feel
- 3:41like I since so much commercially is non union that I
- 3:47felt like I should have been going out more commercially then
- 3:56asking of course submission report, seeing if I if I wasn't
- 4:03being submitted or if I was, how was I being pitched And when I
- 4:08would get the response about when I would ask about how I was
- 4:13being pitched or you know, how I can help what I can do to help
- 4:19them. Also, the response, the only
- 4:23response I was getting was that there wasn't anything for me
- 4:29because, you know, being a white woman in her 30s, there's just
- 4:36nothing for me. And I get that.
- 4:41But also that response, that as the only response was a little
- 4:47making me uneasy. Also, I did have to join SAG
- 4:53last summer, summer 2024. So once I also joined the SAG,
- 5:01then the response of well, now you're in SAG, there's no SAG
- 5:06commercials for you, which again, also not true because I'm
- 5:10seeing I'm aware that other people in my position, my type
- 5:19are going out are booking so that I didn't love.
- 5:23So when my response was only there's nothing for your type
- 5:29and you're in Sagna, what else can you expect?
- 5:33I understand those in a grand scale, but when that's the only
- 5:39response, it feels a little bit dismissive.
- 5:43So, but having the conversation, I did have the conversation with
- 5:46my reps about how I feel like I should be auditioning more and
- 5:53let's numbers wise, this past year, 2025, I had three
- 6:00auditions, I believe commercially 3, no more than
- 6:05four, which I think that speaks to four itself.
- 6:10It would be something else if I was auditioning once a week or
- 6:13even like twice a month, that would be something.
- 6:17But I think that three in a year is fair.
- 6:22But I had given them. We had the conversation at the
- 6:25beginning of the year that I was going to give it a few months
- 6:28and see how things went. If you know, they are.
- 6:32I also wasn't being told how I was being pitched.
- 6:35And I have extensive improv and comedy training, which is very
- 6:41important in, in commercially. So, so I was trying to lean on
- 6:49that and ask them how I was being pitched and why they
- 6:53thought I wasn't going in. I and then we were going to see
- 6:56how it was going to go for the next couple months.
- 6:59I had recently just taken, I took the the commercial class at
- 7:03200 S to make those connections and and I did ask them that if I
- 7:11left them commercially, could I stay with them theatrically And
- 7:14the answer was no, which was a bit disappointing.
- 7:18But honestly, I wasn't going out with them theatrically all that
- 7:22much either. So wasn't the biggest loss.
- 7:26But that being said, having this conversation with them at the
- 7:30beginning of the year, and then I, I did not give it a couple
- 7:35months. I gave it about nine months.
- 7:39And so I felt that after that time and we've been together so
- 7:44long and it's just like, I, you know, you just feel it out.
- 7:47You feel like something, it's just time to move, move on.
- 7:51And so I worked with Jen de Pablo.
- 7:58Oh gosh am I saying her name right?
- 8:00I'm going to be so embarrassed if I said it wrong but Jen was
- 8:08amazing to work with. I cannot recommend her enough.
- 8:12I got her name from my friend Caitlin so Jen.
- 8:15I will link her in the show notes.
- 8:17I will blast her on Instagram as well as she is so great.
- 8:22I went in with telling her I want new commercial Rep and we
- 8:30met for like, I think we met three maybe 4 times for an hour
- 8:38each. And she was so helpful in
- 8:43getting my materials dressed right, especially for submitting
- 8:48Fiat commercially, two agencies. And she came in with a certain
- 8:56number because I didn't want to blast out like 500 emails again
- 8:59like I did that, you know, years ago.
- 9:03And I'm not in that position, like I don't want to do that
- 9:07again. And so we wrote the e-mail
- 9:10together. She came with the e-mail list of
- 9:13like, I think it was 11 people to submit to.
- 9:16And we got all the material together, wrote the e-mail, sent
- 9:21them out. I heard back from five people. 5
- 9:28out of 11 is like within a day or two is a great response.
- 9:33So I had five meetings with different commercial agents and
- 9:38that was great. I also was very clear because I
- 9:42did not leave my current Rep at the time until I was finding new
- 9:49one. And I feel like that's always
- 9:52like a should I, shouldn't I, who should I, should I break up
- 9:56with this person before I start dating this person?
- 9:58And I was very transparent with everyone that I did.
- 10:02I was still commercially wrapped, but I was very open and
- 10:08honest with my Rep at the time that I was looking for people.
- 10:12They knew it was coming. It wasn't like I all of a sudden
- 10:16ghosted them or this was coming out of the blue.
- 10:19So I think that was a relief to the people I was meeting with
- 10:24that they were aware. Like, I'm good with
- 10:27communication. I'm not going to like leave you
- 10:28high and dry. Don't worry.
- 10:30Like it was not, it's not a surprise.
- 10:34But all of the meetings went really well and yeah, it was
- 10:41actually such a relief. Like waiting all of that time
- 10:47knowing that I needed new Rep and just putting it on the back
- 10:52burner for so long and so long and then finally doing it was
- 10:57such a relief again. Jen was so helpful and making it
- 11:01happen like so quickly too, which I feel like it's so easy
- 11:07for actors to be like, well, I need to do this first.
- 11:09I need to get my XY and Z together first or I need to
- 11:14leave my reps first. And all of the millions of
- 11:17reasons that we have to like not do something right away.
- 11:24And it was hard to leave. It was hard to leave my Rep, my
- 11:29reps because again, they were not going to keep me
- 11:31theatrically. But and I also I had been with
- 11:34them for so long, but I sent a simple kind e-mail of like, you
- 11:43know, we had spoken about this. I found new Rep.
- 11:47However, I worded it like, thank you guys so much for all of your
- 11:51all of your work. Let's stay in touch, blah, blah,
- 11:54blah. Obviously, you never want to
- 11:56burn any bridges with reps and they're lovely people.
- 12:00And it was nothing personal. And I think that's also a thing
- 12:04that actors get stuck in with like loyalty to reps where it's
- 12:08like they work for us and if it's not working, it's not
- 12:11working. Like you don't want to be dating
- 12:15someone who like, it's not working, it's not working.
- 12:19It has to be working on both sides and it is business and
- 12:24it's hard also. You think they're going to take
- 12:26us so personally? And then the response is we wish
- 12:29you best of luck. Like honestly, that was the
- 12:32responses. So, so yes, so my meetings with
- 12:38the new reps, they were all lovely.
- 12:43They were all great. One of my red flags from one of
- 12:47them was that they were very much pushing going ficor, which
- 12:53is fine, but there everyone else was kind of like, it's your
- 12:57life, it's your career if you want to go ficor, yes, if you're
- 13:01not. And these one person was, you
- 13:04know, pushing it a little bit more, which I didn't love.
- 13:07They were kind of in the same boat as my current Rep that was
- 13:11saying, you know, well, you're sagged now, there's nothing you
- 13:14can do about it. So, so I didn't love that.
- 13:18So that kind of went to the bottom of my list.
- 13:22And then another, another Rep was talking a lot about being, I
- 13:30can't think of the word like more of a spokesperson, like
- 13:33HHSN, home shopping. Yeah, type of person, which I'm
- 13:37not saying no to, but I don't want that to be like the go to.
- 13:42Again. All of these people were so
- 13:45great. Those were just, I had to be
- 13:49really nitpicky. And then it came down to 2
- 13:53agents that I really, really liked both of them and I had a
- 13:58really hard time picking. But the ones I went with, I feel
- 14:05like they could get me in. So I'm going, I'm, I'm with
- 14:08lemon lime now and I feel like that was the best decision for
- 14:14me. But it was a really hard, it's
- 14:17really hard when you have good choices of like, how do I pick?
- 14:22How do I pick? So yeah, I, it was nice to not
- 14:28go through that not being represented portion, which I
- 14:34feel is also another reason that a lot of people hold off on
- 14:38getting new reps because you're like, well, how long am I going
- 14:42to be without reps? And I'm sure it's a little bit
- 14:45different theatrically. Again, this is commercially, but
- 14:50I think as long as you're open and have clear communication
- 14:55with your current reps, if you're going to be looking and
- 14:59your future reps that you're going to be meeting with, I
- 15:04think that's always out of the gate.
- 15:09I was also pleasantly surprised that like nobody asked.
- 15:15Well, of course, why would they ask about like, if you, if I was
- 15:19a mom, I, I didn't talk about being a mom.
- 15:22I didn't. Well, that's not true.
- 15:25I did talk about being a mom, but I, it came up naturally in
- 15:30conversation. I didn't bring it up as like a
- 15:33thing because who cares? And honestly, and nobody gave a
- 15:41flying hoot, nobody cared that I was a parent.
- 15:44That was one of the one of the agencies I met with.
- 15:48Both people had young kids and that was a poll for me because I
- 15:52was like, oh, they'll get me. They'll get it.
- 15:54They'll understand. I didn't end up going with them,
- 15:57but that was nice to have that connection with them as well.
- 16:03But that being said, I did bring up in conversation that I was a
- 16:07mom. Nobody asked if if being a mom
- 16:14had ever deterred me from auditions or, or, well, what are
- 16:19you going to do if you need to audition or how are you going to
- 16:23handle that as a mom and a parent?
- 16:25How are you going to do that? Nothing.
- 16:27Nobody asked anything. And that was like, I don't know
- 16:32if I was expecting them to, but they didn't.
- 16:37And it was such a relief where it's like, yeah, moms get shit
- 16:42done. We can do this.
- 16:44I don't know, like, I guess it's just because it was my first
- 16:47time doing that as a mom, like interviewing as since I've been
- 16:54a mom. So yeah, it was nice to be like,
- 16:58oh, you don't care about that part of my life, which like
- 17:04obviously I am open to talk about very clearly and and did
- 17:08talk about it to them, but it was nice that it wasn't a
- 17:14concern for them. And I didn't bring it up as
- 17:19like, oh, also I'm a mom. But don't worry, I won't miss
- 17:23any auditions. Having a kid has never been a
- 17:26problem because I didn't even want to put that in their mind
- 17:29because it has it has never been a problem.
- 17:31It has never deterred me from auditioning or getting booked.
- 17:36So why even bring that up as a possibility?
- 17:43So I didn't, but I feel like if it is going to be an issue for
- 17:49you, that is something you should bring up.
- 17:51Like, hey, just an FYII Am you know, if I'm a single mom or my
- 17:58husband doesn't work for whatever it is.
- 18:00Like if you're going to have certain time restraints or
- 18:03issues with auditioning, I think that's fair to just lay out on
- 18:08the table. Be like, I'll get it done.
- 18:10But just a heads up. I don't know, I don't know.
- 18:14Or just feel it out with the people.
- 18:15Like, do you know they're going to be jerks if you don't send in
- 18:21a self tape, like right as soon as it's, you know, emailed to
- 18:26you? I don't know.
- 18:27But I think those are fair things to talk about and have
- 18:33open communication with with with any Rep for sure.
- 18:41Yeah. And I, I think that since
- 18:47becoming a mom, I feel like my not well, yes, obviously my
- 18:53priorities have shifted, but affecting like who I want to
- 18:58work with and how I present myself.
- 19:02I feel like I come in a lot more confident in who I am and I feel
- 19:09like that is apparent or like obvious through like how through
- 19:17the response that I got, like I'm very I'm not afraid to just
- 19:21be myself anymore. Oh, I lost my light.
- 19:25Sorry about that. But I think that that being a
- 19:32mom that has A and with just age in general, that going in and
- 19:38being like, this is who I am. And I'm not trying to be like,
- 19:41Oh, I'm a businesswoman or Oh, I'm I'm probably going to do mom
- 19:46auditions. So I should look like a mom.
- 19:49One of my main, actually one of my biggest fears is that people
- 19:56are going to think I'm stupid And I, you know, I know that's
- 20:01something I need to deal with in therapy and all of that, but I
- 20:07think it's also how I speak and I'm pretty energetic and I, you
- 20:12know, if I but now. I'm not afraid to talk how I
- 20:17talk and say like or this or be like.
- 20:21I actually don't know what you're talking about, can you
- 20:24explain it to me? That's fine.
- 20:27And I have found such a better response to me being authentic
- 20:34and not knowing something as opposed to pretending that I
- 20:38know something. And then I ask a follow up
- 20:40question and then I'm like, oh shit, like I actually don't know
- 20:43what you're talking about. So it always works out better to
- 20:46just be your, your authentic self, right?
- 20:51I mean, that's just, you know, life, life lessons for anything
- 20:59anyway, So what I was looking for most in a new Rep in new Rep
- 21:04was really them get pitching me and getting me in the room.
- 21:09So fingers crossed. But it's been a couple weeks and
- 21:17we it crickets so far. But but I know it's hard and
- 21:23hopefully it's just a learning curve.
- 21:25But that was my main thing is like having reps that I see
- 21:31their name on the call sheet, like they're the ones bringing,
- 21:35getting people in the room. They have the connections with
- 21:39the casting directors who are bringing people in.
- 21:42So yeah, so. So that's that, yeah.
- 21:49I feel like bigger picture that a lot of times we feel like
- 21:57needing new rap is, I don't know, I feel like part of it was
- 22:03like, Oh my God, I'm this old and I've been here this long and
- 22:08now I'm looking for new rap again.
- 22:09Like it feels like starting over, but I, I'm trying not to
- 22:13see it as starting over. I'm trying to see it as stepping
- 22:16forward into the next chapter. And again, we, you know, reps
- 22:26work for us. Would they only make money if we
- 22:28make money? All that jazz.
- 22:30It's our careers at the end of the day.
- 22:33But I think lesson is that if something's not working out, I
- 22:39won't wait as long to make a change.
- 22:43I feel like, you know, if I'm not inside the life that I want
- 22:49to be living, I have to make those, those changes and big
- 22:52changes can be scary. And I know that it seems like a
- 22:56kind of small thing just finding new Rep, but yes, actors like
- 23:02that is kind of a big thing. So, so making those changes,
- 23:08changes, changes hard no matter what.
- 23:11So I think allowing yourself to have whatever feelings you have
- 23:18around them, be it emotional, be it whatever that that it's OK.
- 23:24I think you have to trust your timing and trust where you want
- 23:31your career to go. And again, just like listen to
- 23:36your own self talk, No, probably not.
- 23:42Listen to your own intuition. There's where I'm going.
- 23:45Listen to your own intuition. Make sure that you're your
- 23:49advocate first, especially when it comes to reps I think it's
- 23:54important that, like I said, have that open communication.
- 24:01Be yourself straight off the bat because you're not going to be
- 24:04wanting to pretend to be whoever you were in the meeting for, you
- 24:10know, X amount of years or however long you're with this
- 24:13new Rep. Like you got to be you they're
- 24:17and definitely commercially because they're commercially
- 24:21you're selling yourself. I mean, same for theatrically
- 24:25pretty much too. But yeah, I think being yourself
- 24:31is always important. I've said that a million times.
- 24:35Anyway, I'm going to go through a couple questions that that
- 24:41sorry that I had and that I'm that other people had for me.
- 24:46So how did you know it's time to leave your Rep?
- 24:50Like I said at the beginning, I it was just like no auditions, 0
- 24:57auditions and just felt like I was not.
- 25:02The excitement about me wasn't there.
- 25:06I think that was a big thing. Like the excitement, their
- 25:08excitement for me wasn't there anymore.
- 25:11And I want somebody who's excited for me, who's excited to
- 25:14pitch for me and try and get me in the room and tell me what
- 25:18they're doing and all of those things.
- 25:20Did motherhood change what you want from representation?
- 25:23Not really. A little bit, I think.
- 25:28I think it did. I think I don't know if this is
- 25:33motherhood. I think it's just aging that I'm
- 25:39OK with it not being like such a personal relationship.
- 25:44I went into it being like, I don't care if the person is like
- 25:47the nicest person. Like, of course I want them to
- 25:50be the kindest person, but like, I just want them to like get the
- 25:55work done and like work on my behalf and all of that.
- 26:00So I do feel like, yeah, I don't think it's motherhood, but I
- 26:04think just getting older that I'm like, yeah, this is a
- 26:09business. Let's, I mean, of course I'm
- 26:11going to be kind and professional and personable, but
- 26:13like, let's just can we like mom's got to pay the bills.
- 26:19Let's get shit done the hardest. What is the hardest part
- 26:23emotionally about letting go? I think just like feeling bad
- 26:28that you're leaving people who have worked hard for you and but
- 26:36again, that's a whole you, just you, they're not going to take
- 26:39it personally. So you should try and not to
- 26:42take it personally. It's like you can't just stay in
- 26:44a relationship because the other person kind of likes you.
- 26:48How did you actually do it? e-mail, conversation, logistics,
- 26:52logistically, I just emailed them.
- 26:54Yeah, I said, you know, we've kind of talked about this and
- 26:59I'm going in a different direction and wish you all the
- 27:04best. And thank you so much for
- 27:06everything you've done. It was a very short e-mail and
- 27:09was received well. And yeah, that's all I did.
- 27:14What advice would you give someone afraid to make that
- 27:18move? Just do it.
- 27:20Just do it. Just get it over with.
- 27:22Like you're only going to be like, why didn't I do this
- 27:26sooner? Also, contact Jen de Pablo.
- 27:32So again, her information I will put in the show notes and I will
- 27:37tag her on Instagram. Jen, everybody reach out to Jen.
- 27:42She will get this done for you. It's so great.
- 27:45She's amazing. What are you doing differently
- 27:49as you look? Well, I'm not looking anymore
- 27:51for commercial Rep, but what did I do differently was work with
- 27:56Jen was I didn't do 500 emails. I didn't do a long e-mail.
- 28:06You know, it was a very to the point.
- 28:08Here's my stuff. The end Like that was such a
- 28:12relief too. And somebody, one of the people
- 28:15I met with were actually like, one of the reasons we met with
- 28:18wanted to meet with you was because of your e-mail.
- 28:21Like your e-mail was so great and made me want to open your
- 28:26materials. So he was like, kudos on the
- 28:28e-mail. And I was like, great.
- 28:30And you guys, I makes it sound like this e-mail was like some
- 28:34genius thing. It was like a paragraph.
- 28:37Like it was super simple, but like the certain bolding of
- 28:41words and all that. Like, yeah, I think that was
- 28:44helpful. How do I balance wanting to work
- 28:52with wanting to be present for my family?
- 28:54I mean, I don't think that's really related to this
- 28:58particular situation or episode, but there there is no balance.
- 29:05I mean, I think that's what I've come to find is that you balance
- 29:08as much as you can, but it's always going to shift one way or
- 29:13the other. I feel like I hear that a lot
- 29:17where it's like if I'm really succeeding at work, I'm probably
- 29:20not doing the best at home and vice versa.
- 29:23But yeah, hopefully I get more work and then I'll get back to
- 29:29you on on more of the balance. I got to get more of the work to
- 29:33see to see how that balance is going to go.
- 29:37But anyway, I hope that me sharing a little bit about my
- 29:45situation, my experience leaving commercially and theatrically
- 29:51and finding new commercial Rep was helpful in any way to you or
- 29:59entertaining, I don't know. But now my next step is since I
- 30:04had to leave my Rep across the board, now I have a commercial
- 30:09Rep. So fingers crossed that things
- 30:11start picking up with them and my next step is to find new
- 30:16theatrical Rep, which Jen, I will be calling you or emailing
- 30:21you. All right.
