- 0:00I'm feeling really happy with this mini that
- 0:03I have for you all this week, and I've been too
- 0:06on my mini game, and I'm not telling you that
- 0:09it's gonna be a bad mini. with me saying that
- 0:12I've been too on it. I just needed to come back
- 0:14to my Chelsea roots because I was too on it and
- 0:18continue to stay on it. You guys all know what
- 0:20I'm saying. This one is from routers. Reuters.
- 0:24How do you say it? Reuters is how I say it. Reuters.
- 0:26None of my first two choices. No, it does not
- 0:29seem like it should say that. I'm going to start
- 0:31with the title of it first before I hit you with
- 0:34the date. China sees us. 483 million of smuggled
- 0:40meat, some 40 years old, China daily. This is
- 0:43from June 23rd, 2015. I wonder if they're still
- 0:47letting any of that meat age. I have to tell
- 0:50you where I got this from. It's relevant, I think.
- 0:53I was scrolling Reddit, as I do, and somebody
- 0:56was asking if their meat was okay that their
- 0:59dad had in the freezer for 40 years. And I don't
- 1:03know why I was reading the comments. in this
- 1:06reddit about old meat in a freezer because i
- 1:09don't even eat meat but yet here i am probably
- 1:122am scrolling reddit and this is what catches
- 1:15my eye and someone linked this up so it all got
- 1:18us to where we needed to be so let's just read
- 1:21the fucking article shanghai Chinese customs
- 1:28have seized around 3 billion yuan worth of smuggled
- 1:35meat some more than 40 years old and rotting,
- 1:38the official China Daily said on Wednesday, the
- 1:41latest in a grim series of food safety scares.
- 1:44Beijing toughened food safety rules in April
- 1:47to shake off a reputation for safety scandals
- 1:50that range from donkey meat tainted with fox
- 1:52DNA to milk contaminated with industrial chemical
- 1:56malamine that killed at least six infants in
- 1:592008. Oh geez. Yeah, Chinese authorities have
- 2:02launched a crackdown on beef and frozen meat
- 2:05smuggling in addition to a campaign last year
- 2:07to stamp out the smuggling of farm products.
- 2:10Can we just stop for a second? It's gotta be
- 2:11one of the toughest things you can pro - possibly
- 2:14smuggle frozen meats. Yeah, I think that's why
- 2:19there was such a discrepancy in quality. Is that
- 2:22the way you would put it? I guess maybe they're
- 2:26just saying, I feel like China at one point,
- 2:28they just said, are you kidding me? We have a
- 2:30frozen meat smuggling problem. That should be
- 2:32like the easiest thing to crack down on. Let's
- 2:34just crack down on it. Yeah. I mean, if they're
- 2:37really holding a gun to my head, I mean, yeah,
- 2:40let's just crack down on the frozen rotten meat
- 2:42problem we have. Either somebody is like really
- 2:46cold moving this gross meat or they have a giant
- 2:49refrigeration truck. Like it should be pretty
- 2:51easy to do. Coming across the border, right?
- 2:53And apparently it was coming from like wartime
- 2:56Vietnam. Let's read on. Authority. Had busted
- 3:0221 criminal gangs by June. There's a black market
- 3:06for this apparently. The problems with meats
- 3:09in China, they're immense. Canada doesn't have
- 3:12it. We have our own food smuggling problems.
- 3:14There was that huge maple syrup hijack that happened
- 3:17a couple years ago. You can keep talking, I'm
- 3:21just gonna find the headline for you. Just like
- 3:23China has a very Chinese meat problem. Authorities
- 3:26had busted 21 criminal gangs by June. by June,
- 3:29leading to seizures of more than 100 ,000 tons
- 3:33of smuggled meat, including chicken wings, beef
- 3:36and pork, state news agency Xinhua said. In one
- 3:40bust, police in southern Hunan province arrested
- 3:4320 people. Customs found some of the meat was
- 3:46more than 40 years old, meaning it dated back
- 3:48to the 1970s. Other parts were rotten and decomposing.
- 3:51How do you age test that? It might have been
- 3:54labeled. Like best before? Yeah. I feel like
- 3:5940 years ago, especially in that part of the
- 4:01world, did not have best before dates. I don't
- 4:04know. It's hard to say. Maybe judge it like a
- 4:07tree and it's how many rings are around it in
- 4:10freezer burntness. Maybe it's just that decomposed
- 4:13that they tracked it back to the 70s. I don't
- 4:16know. Maybe it goes on. You've got to assume
- 4:18at least for some portion of it, it was frozen.
- 4:20Maybe here. So maybe this is the key. Hold on.
- 4:23Just listen to this. Other parts were rotten
- 4:24and decomposing. The China Daily newspaper said
- 4:27it was multiple outlets covered this. It was
- 4:30not clear if the seized meat had been destroyed.
- 4:33That's what I wanted to hear. This is 2015, people.
- 4:36It was smelly. We gotta assume at some point
- 4:38since then it has been either destroyed or eaten.
- 4:42Quote, it was smelly and I nearly threw up when
- 4:45I opened the door, end quote, administration
- 4:47official Zhang Tao told the newspaper. Industry
- 4:51sources say hundreds of thousands of tons of
- 4:53beef is being smuggled into China via neighboring
- 4:56Hong Kong and Vietnam, from countries such as
- 4:58Brazil and India, to sidestep Beijing's import
- 5:01curbs. Yike! Meat can last for a long time if
- 5:04continuously frozen, but smuggled meat is often
- 5:08moved under poor storage conditions that lead
- 5:10to repeated thong, making it eventually go bad.
- 5:14They don't say exactly how many years it takes
- 5:16to go that bad, though. Quote, to save costs,
- 5:19smugglers often hire ordinary vehicles instead
- 5:22of refrigerated ones. So the meat is often thawed
- 5:26out several times before reaching customers,
- 5:29end quote Yang Bao, an anti -smuggling official
- 5:32in Changsha, told the paper. That's my article
- 5:36for today. This is, for the record, three years
- 5:41after I went to China. A little bit disturbing
- 5:44for me. I hope I didn't eat donkey meat because
- 5:46I was eating meat at that time. I don't care
- 5:48if it's 2015, I couldn't not share that article
- 5:52with you guys. No, and if it makes you feel any
- 5:55better at least that donkey was spliced with
- 5:58fox meat so you weren't just eating a donkey.
- 6:00I had so many questions about that donkey fox.
- 6:06There's not a 0 % chance that it wasn't wooly
- 6:10mammoth meat that people were being proposed
- 6:12they were getting. Okay, what would you rather
- 6:14eat? You eat meat, though. The wooly mammoth
- 6:16or donkey fight? I can't even say that without...
- 6:20I gotta say Donkey Fox. All the stories of people
- 6:23actually getting wooly mammoth meat just sounds
- 6:25so disgusting. I mean, it could be from like
- 6:28one of those ones they're trying to de -extinct,
- 6:30but I really don't want to go that way to get
- 6:32meat. That's true. And it kind of conjures up
- 6:34the same feelings within me. The smuggled meat
- 6:37versus extinct meat. But everybody does want
- 6:41wooly mammoth meatballs in the polls. Everybody
- 6:44does want wooly mammoth meatballs. That's just
- 6:46a fact. That's a total fact. Even the vegetarians
- 6:49among us. It's true. I would love a woolly mammoth
- 6:52meatball. Anyhow, you guys got 48 hours. Go find
- 6:55some woolly mammoth meatballs and or some donkey
- 6:57fox meat and just let us know. I don't know what
- 7:01you're gonna let us know, but let us know. Bye.
- 7:03Bye.
