- 0:00Speaker 1: May 31, 1951, brought NBC Radio Network listeners Dragnet, episode 103,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Big Bindle, sponsored by Fatima Cigarettes. Jack Webb is Sergeant
- 0:13Speaker 1: Joe Friday, with Barton Yarborough as Sergeant Ben Romero, as
- 0:17Speaker 1: the pair are assigned to a Los Angeles narcotics case.
- 0:22Speaker 1: High-grade heroin traffickers are believed to be working through an
- 0:25Speaker 1: upscale hotel, and Friday adopts a Phoenix identity, posing as
- 0:30Speaker 1: a prospective buyer with a fake bindle to make contact.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Stacey Harris and Ralph Moody are also heard, with George
- 0:38Speaker 1: Fenneman announcing this early Friday and Romero broadcast. Here is
- 0:42Speaker 1: the original broadcast.
- 0:45Speaker 2: ¶ ¶.
- 0:51Speaker 3: The story you're about to hear is true.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Fatima Cigarettes. Best of all long cigarettes. Brings you Dragnet.
- 1:10Speaker 3: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to narcotics details. You
- 1:15Speaker 3: receive information that one of your city's most fashionable hotels
- 1:19Speaker 3: is being used as the clearinghouse for high-grade heroin. Evidence
- 1:23Speaker 3: points to a narcotics ring, the center of distribution.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Your job, break it.
- 1:33Speaker 6: You'll be amazed when you compare Fatima with any other
- 1:36Speaker 6: king-size cigarette. The size is the same. They now cost
- 1:41Speaker 6: the same. But in Fatima... The difference is quality. You see,
- 1:47Speaker 6: Fatima is the quality king-size cigarette because it contains the
- 1:52Speaker 6: finest domestic and Turkish tobaccos superbly blended.
- 1:56Speaker 5: And Fatima is extra.
- 1:58Speaker 6: Mild with a much different, much better flavor and aroma
- 2:02Speaker 6: than any other long cigarette.
- 2:04Speaker 5: So compare Fatima yourself.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Fatima's now cost the same as other long cigarettes, but
- 2:11Speaker 4: your first pop will.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Tell you Ah, that's different.
- 2:16Speaker 6: Yes, in Fatima, the difference is quality. Buy Fatima. They're
- 2:22Speaker 6: extra mild, with a better flavor and aroma. Smoke Fatima.
- 2:27Speaker 6: The quality king-size cigarette.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Fatima.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Best of all long cigarettes. Dragnet, the documented drama of
- 2:42Speaker 4: an actual crime. For the next 30 minutes, in cooperation
- 2:46Speaker 4: with the Los Angeles Police Department, you will travel step
- 2:49Speaker 4: by step on the side of the law through an
- 2:51Speaker 4: actual case transcribed from official police files. From beginning to end,
- 2:56Speaker 4: from crime to punishment, Dragnet is the story of your
- 3:00Speaker 4: police force in action.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Dragnet.
- 3:07Speaker 7: It was Tuesday, October 5th. It was foggy and rainy
- 3:09Speaker 7: in Los Angeles. We were working the day watch out
- 3:12Speaker 7: of narcotics division. My partner's Ben Romero. The boss is
- 3:15Speaker 7: Captain Kearney. My name's Friday. It was 8.47 a.m. when
- 3:19Speaker 7: we got to 401 North Avenue 19, the main jail.
- 3:23Speaker 8: Felony section.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Morning, fellas. How are you today, Pete?
- 3:28Speaker 8: Morning.
- 3:28Speaker 5: What brings you up here so early?
- 3:30Speaker 7: We want to see Monty Wilkins booked in last night
- 3:32Speaker 7: on narcotics.
- 3:33Speaker 8: Booking number is 906351.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Okay, let me look.
- 3:36Speaker 8: Okay.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Here it is. He's in 103. Thank you, Pete.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I'll put it in the book here, Joe. Here's my gun.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You want to check if we're yours?
- 3:52Speaker 8: Yeah, right.
- 3:54Speaker 5: I'll put them away.
- 3:55Speaker 8: Okay, Pete. Here's your.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Check. Thank you, Pete. All set, then?
- 4:06Speaker 8: 906351.
- 4:06Speaker 5: That's it. Okay, let's go. All right.
- 4:23Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:24Speaker 2: We want to talk to Monty Wilkins, he's in 103.
- 4:26Speaker 9: All right, we'll get him.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Monty Wilkins, 103, for interview.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Hello, Friday. Ben.
- 4:57Speaker 8: Hi, Monty. Better move out of the way there. He
- 4:59Speaker 8: wants to lock that door, Monty.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 10: Let's go around the corner to the interview room, Monty.
- 5:10Speaker 5: All right. Man, this is awful.
- 5:15Speaker 8: What's the matter? Don't you feel good?
- 5:16Speaker 5: I feel awful. Pretty sick.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You look bad.
- 5:22Speaker 8: I'll get the light.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Okay, Ben.
- 5:32Speaker 8: Sit down, Marty. Okay. Thanks.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Well, it's been about a year and a half, hasn't.
- 5:38Speaker 8: It, Marty?
- 5:39Speaker 2: About that long, yeah. We got you for possession that time, too,
- 5:42Speaker 2: didn't we? Yeah, that's right.
- 5:44Speaker 8: How long you been on the stuff this time?
- 5:46Speaker 2: Well, I guess I've been hooked bad about a month.
- 5:49Speaker 8: How much you shooting?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Well, about two caps a day. And you were picked
- 5:53Speaker 2: up down in Slauson last night. You had seven caps
- 5:55Speaker 2: on you.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 5:57Speaker 8: Well, we checked with the crime lab. They've run the stuff.
- 6:00Speaker 8: It's not the usual Mexican, is it?
- 6:02Speaker 5: That's right.
- 6:02Speaker 8: Do you want to tell us about it?
- 6:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it's good stuff.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It's not Mexican.
- 6:06Speaker 5: We know that, Monty.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Where'd you get it? Haven't had anything like that for
- 6:10Speaker 2: a long time. Real good. Hasn't been cut. Real fine.
- 6:15Speaker 11: Maybe it's coming in from the East Coast. Can't get
- 6:18Speaker 11: nothing like that from Mexico.
- 6:19Speaker 8: Now look, Monty, we ran the stuff through the lab.
- 6:21Speaker 8: We know it's high-grade heroin. We know all about it.
- 6:23Speaker 8: Now I want you to tell us where you've.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Been getting it.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Well, you know how it is. You want to ask
- 6:28Speaker 2: the impossible of me? My life wouldn't be worth a penny.
- 6:30Speaker 5: You know how it is.
- 6:32Speaker 2: We handled you a year and a half ago, didn't we, Marty?
- 6:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:35Speaker 2: You're still around, aren't you? Yeah, I did time, though. Well,
- 6:39Speaker 2: you knew that going in. You're going to do time
- 6:40Speaker 2: this trip, too.
- 6:42Speaker 8: So don't shoot us that line, huh?
- 6:43Speaker 2: Well, you guys know how it is with us guys.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I can't tell you anything.
- 6:47Speaker 8: No, it isn't that you can't. You just don't want to.
- 6:49Speaker 7: Now, look, we didn't come up here to spend the
- 6:51Speaker 7: time of day with you, Wilkins.
- 6:52Speaker 8: This is the only time around. If you want to
- 6:54Speaker 8: help us, you can help yourself at the same time.
- 6:56Speaker 5: It's up to you.
- 6:57Speaker 2: You mean you can clear me on this? You can
- 6:59Speaker 2: give me a break? We didn't say that. We can't
- 7:01Speaker 2: make any promises to you or give you any kind.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Of a break.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's entirely up to you how you want us to
- 7:06Speaker 2: put it down in our reports, cooperative or uncooperative.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Well, okay.
- 7:13Speaker 2: You squared with me last time.
- 7:14Speaker 8: You helped us last time we made a case.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But I'm not going to be able to help you
- 7:18Speaker 2: very much.
- 7:19Speaker 8: Where have you been getting it?
- 7:20Speaker 2: Well, I've only made.
- 7:21Speaker 11: A couple of buys on that good stuff. I just
- 7:24Speaker 11: got it from some old mule I just happened to
- 7:25Speaker 11: meet down there. Seemed to be pretty well loaded with
- 7:28Speaker 11: this stuff. Where'd you meet him?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Oh, down near Fifth and Spring somewhere. What's his name?
- 7:33Speaker 2: I never did know his name. I just knew that
- 7:35Speaker 2: he was pushing the stuff. Some old mule, that's all.
- 7:38Speaker 8: Who's he pushing it for?
- 7:40Speaker 2: You know they never tell us guys where they're getting it.
- 7:42Speaker 2: You know how they do.
- 7:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I never did talk to him very much.
- 7:46Speaker 11: I did hear him say once he was getting his
- 7:47Speaker 11: stuff from a new bunch of guys from the East.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Said they were really going to open up this town.
- 7:52Speaker 5: The way he talked, there are.
- 7:53Speaker 2: No small-time operators.
- 7:55Speaker 11: I got enough out of it to know they're working
- 7:57Speaker 11: out of the Plaza Royal Hotel.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Never figured that, would you?
- 8:01Speaker 8: Anything else?
- 8:02Speaker 2: Any names mentioned? Yeah, I remember this old mule mentioned
- 8:05Speaker 2: a couple names.
- 8:07Speaker 11: I think he talked about somebody named Kirk and another
- 8:10Speaker 11: guy called Smith.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Now, you understand, this guy was just talking. I don't
- 8:14Speaker 2: know how they fit in or what the connections are.
- 8:16Speaker 8: Yeah, we understand. Where can we get a hold of
- 8:17Speaker 8: this old mule?
- 8:18Speaker 2: I don't know where he's at.
- 8:19Speaker 8: How do you get a hold of him when you
- 8:21Speaker 8: want to make a buy?
- 8:22Speaker 2: I just run into him, that's all.
- 8:24Speaker 11: Down around Spring Street. You know, just around. Last time
- 8:28Speaker 11: I was down, I couldn't find it.
- 8:30Speaker 8: Is that all of it, Marty?
- 8:32Speaker 2: Is that all you can tell us? Well, I don't
- 8:33Speaker 2: know too much anyway.
- 8:35Speaker 8: You know how it is.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I couldn't tell you any more.
- 8:37Speaker 5: It's all I know.
- 8:39Speaker 8: All right, let's get out of this 510 if that's
- 8:41Speaker 8: all you got.
- 8:42Speaker 2: That's everything I got.
- 8:43Speaker 11: Hope you fellas will write me up okay.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I think I helped you quite a bit.
- 8:49Speaker 9: Haven't I?
- 8:50Speaker 2: One of the best hotels in town, Plaza Royal.
- 8:54Speaker 11: Never would have figured that, would you?
- 8:55Speaker 5: Maybe.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I've told you quite a lot. The rest ought to
- 8:58Speaker 2: be easy.
- 8:59Speaker 8: No, you're wrong there, Monty. Why? You haven't told us
- 9:02Speaker 8: the name of your mule. You haven't told us where
- 9:03Speaker 8: we could find him. You haven't made it so easy.
- 9:05Speaker 11: That's all I have.
- 9:07Speaker 8: I've told you a lot. Yeah, there's a lot you
- 9:08Speaker 8: didn't tell.
- 9:16Speaker 7: We continued our interrogation of Monty Wilkins. He refused to
- 9:19Speaker 7: divulge any further information. What he had told us, together with.
- 9:22Speaker 8: Information already compiled, seemed to check out.
- 9:25Speaker 7: For the past seven months, we've been trying to localize
- 9:28Speaker 7: the operations of what had come to be regarded as
- 9:30Speaker 7: a well-running distribution center for high-grade heroin. We knew of
- 9:34Speaker 7: the existence of this distribution point through the various users
- 9:37Speaker 7: that had been picked up almost daily. These users would
- 9:40Speaker 7: have in their possession quantities of high-grade narcotics. Unlike the cheaper,
- 9:44Speaker 7: lower-grade quality common in the southwest part of the country,
- 9:48Speaker 7: this type of heroin was more common to the eastern
- 9:50Speaker 7: section of the United States. We had believed the local
- 9:53Speaker 7: distribution point to be somewhere in our metropolitan downtown area.
- 9:57Speaker 7: The information gained from Marty Wilkins had strengthened this thing. 10.25 a.m.,
- 10:02Speaker 7: we met with Francis Kearney, captain of the narcotics division.
- 10:06Speaker 8: Liza Royal Hotel.
- 10:07Speaker 5: What do you think?
- 10:08Speaker 10: Well, we figured what we were looking for could be
- 10:10Speaker 10: in that area, but we've never put our finger on
- 10:12Speaker 10: that hotel.
- 10:13Speaker 5: How do you figure on working it?
- 10:15Speaker 7: We're driving back from the jail. Ben and I were
- 10:17Speaker 7: just kicking it around. Skipper, what do you think about
- 10:19Speaker 7: putting a man in that hotel?
- 10:20Speaker 3: Anything's a great deal better than we're doing now, but
- 10:22Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Oh, I'd like to give it a try.
- 10:25Speaker 10: I'd sure like a crack at it, Skipper.
- 10:27Speaker 3: You know how I feel about these kind of assignments.
- 10:29Speaker 3: One man working inside, one outside. Brings the element of
- 10:32Speaker 3: danger up kind of high.
- 10:33Speaker 8: Well, we know it's not going to be easy, but
- 10:35Speaker 8: it looks like a good bet.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Sometimes these things are, sometimes they're not. You know what
- 10:39Speaker 3: kind of a bunch they got to be. Been running
- 10:41Speaker 3: their racket just about as smooth as it can be run.
- 10:44Speaker 5: You know, the kind of a.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Risk a man would have to take if he tried
- 10:46Speaker 3: to make contact with any of them.
- 10:48Speaker 8: Well, we think it's about the quickest way to get
- 10:49Speaker 8: to them.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Well, maybe it might be worth it.
- 10:52Speaker 5: You got any ideas how you'd like.
- 10:54Speaker 8: To work it?
- 10:54Speaker 10: It's just one thing. We haven't come to any decision
- 10:57Speaker 10: who's going in and who isn't.
- 10:58Speaker 7: Well, I think I ought to be the one to
- 11:00Speaker 7: work it from the inside of the hotel with Ben
- 11:01Speaker 7: working outside as a contact.
- 11:03Speaker 10: I don't know why we can't just turn that around.
- 11:05Speaker 10: Last time you had the rough end.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Joe, you just got back from your vacation about three
- 11:09Speaker 3: weeks ago, didn't you?
- 11:10Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right. Didn't you stay down in Arizona?
- 11:13Speaker 5: Phoenix, wasn't it?
- 11:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 5: You know the town very well?
- 11:16Speaker 8: We've got some relatives down there, yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 5: If they started.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Asking you any questions about Phoenix, you could fill them in, huh?
- 11:21Speaker 8: I think so.
- 11:22Speaker 5: That's probably the.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Best way to settle it, Romero. Friday here will be
- 11:26Speaker 3: in a better position knowing a little about Phoenix.
- 11:28Speaker 10: I don't see how you figure it that way. I
- 11:30Speaker 10: went on my vacation, too.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Columbus, Ohio.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Well, because of the type of stuff that's been coming in,
- 11:35Speaker 3: don't you think it'd be a little safer bet to
- 11:37Speaker 3: have our men come from somewhere out this way rather
- 11:39Speaker 3: than from the east?
- 11:41Speaker 8: Yeah, it makes sense. Well.
- 11:44Speaker 10: You did it again, Joe.
- 11:45Speaker 8: You beat me out.
- 11:46Speaker 3: All right, let's figure it this way. You're a local
- 11:49Speaker 3: Phoenix hoodlum. Things got too hot for you down there,
- 11:52Speaker 3: and you came up to L.A.
- 11:53Speaker 5: To cool off. Yeah. How about Joe Edwards?
- 11:56Speaker 3: How's that sound?
- 11:57Speaker 8: That sounds right to me.
- 11:59Speaker 3: You'll get all the necessary cards, identification papers, and a
- 12:02Speaker 3: few letters to carry around with you, all under the
- 12:04Speaker 3: name Joe Edwards.
- 12:04Speaker 8: All right.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I think the best way to work it is for
- 12:07Speaker 3: you to hop right down to Phoenix. When you get
- 12:09Speaker 3: in town, check with Roberts. He's in narcotics down there.
- 12:12Speaker 8: Yeah, I know him.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Have Roberts fill you in on what's been going on
- 12:15Speaker 5: down there.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Any of their current characters they've handled recently. Any that
- 12:20Speaker 3: have been known to pass through. You know, so you
- 12:21Speaker 3: can talk about it freely.
- 12:23Speaker 8: Yeah, I understand.
- 12:23Speaker 10: Joe, when you check into the hotel down there, why
- 12:26Speaker 10: don't you wire ahead up here to the Plaza Royal
- 12:28Speaker 10: for reservation?
- 12:29Speaker 2: Might be a good cover.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Good thought.
- 12:31Speaker 3: That's the way to handle it. You two have worked
- 12:33Speaker 3: these things before. You know what to do. All the
- 12:35Speaker 3: necessary precautions. Well, how long do you figure I'll lay
- 12:37Speaker 3: over in Phoenix?
- 12:39Speaker 5: Couple days, maybe.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Think that's long enough for you to get filled in,
- 12:42Speaker 3: what you'll need?
- 12:43Speaker 8: Oh, yeah, that's fine. Well, I'll go home and get packed.
- 12:45Speaker 8: I'll start on it first thing in the morning.
- 12:46Speaker 3: All right. Romero will stand by at all times, day
- 12:49Speaker 3: and night, while you're on this thing.
- 12:51Speaker 5: You know enough to call if things get tight.
- 12:53Speaker 8: Sure.
- 12:53Speaker 3: As soon as you get in from Phoenix and get
- 12:55Speaker 3: located at the Plaza Royal, get in touch so.
- 12:57Speaker 5: We'll know which way to move. Right. Anything else?
- 13:00Speaker 3: Well, we want to break this thing, but we don't
- 13:02Speaker 3: want to do it at the risk of a life.
- 13:04Speaker 5: So if it starts getting warm, check out.
- 13:06Speaker 8: Okay. Okay.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I still don't like sending anybody on something like this,
- 13:09Speaker 3: but it's.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Got to be done. We don't know enough about it.
- 13:13Speaker 3: We don't know how many.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Are in the gang.
- 13:14Speaker 3: We don't know what kind of a bunch they are,
- 13:16Speaker 3: so be careful.
- 13:17Speaker 8: I will.
- 13:18Speaker 3: If you're not and I hear about it, this will
- 13:19Speaker 3: be your last assignment like this.
- 13:21Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 3: If I don't hear about it, well, you figure it.
- 13:24Speaker 8: Yeah. Either way, I lose.
- 13:32Speaker 7: I went over to the photo room at the crime
- 13:33Speaker 7: lab and picked up the identification papers that had been made.
- 13:36Speaker 8: Out in the name of Joe Edwards.
- 13:38Speaker 7: I went home and removed all Los Angeles labels from
- 13:40Speaker 7: the clothing that I was to take with me.
- 13:42Speaker 8: To Phoenix, Arizona.
- 13:43Speaker 7: I removed all my personal identification and Los Angeles Police
- 13:46Speaker 7: Department credentials. I left my service revolver home and borrowed a.
- 13:51Speaker 8: 38 automatic from Ben. I packed it in my suitcase.
- 13:54Speaker 7: The crime lab also furnished me with a package or
- 13:56Speaker 7: a bindle made to resemble the usual form in which
- 13:59Speaker 7: a person would carry heroin.
- 14:01Speaker 8: I packed this in my suitcase.
- 14:03Speaker 7: Before my departure, Ben and I went over the proposed
- 14:05Speaker 7: plan as best we could. I was to arrive from
- 14:08Speaker 7: Phoenix under the assumed name of Joe Edwards. I would
- 14:11Speaker 7: register at the Plaza Royal Hotel in downtown Los Angeles
- 14:14Speaker 7: and attempt to make arrangements to participate in a narcotics
- 14:17Speaker 7: buy for the purpose of gaining sufficient evidence to apprehend
- 14:20Speaker 7: the narcotics ring. I was to keep Ben informed as
- 14:23Speaker 7: best I could of my progress. As outlined by Captain Kearney,
- 14:27Speaker 7: I arrived in Phoenix and contacted Sergeant.
- 14:29Speaker 8: Roberts at the detective bureau down there.
- 14:32Speaker 7: He furnished me with all the necessary information and assisted
- 14:35Speaker 7: me in acquiring local Phoenix clothing store labels to have
- 14:38Speaker 7: sewn in my clothing. I obtained everything possible to make
- 14:41Speaker 7: it appear that I was a longtime resident of Phoenix, Arizona.
- 14:45Speaker 7: Several dummy hotel bills were made up for me to make.
- 14:47Speaker 8: It look as if I'd lived there for a period
- 14:49Speaker 8: of time.
- 14:50Speaker 7: I was furnished with an Arizona driver's license, a membership
- 14:53Speaker 7: in the local social club, and a voter's registration stub.
- 14:56Speaker 7: These were all packed in my suitcase. October 9th, 10 a.m.,
- 15:00Speaker 7: I arrived at the Plaza Royal Hotel, the front desk.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Yes, sir?
- 15:05Speaker 8: My name's Edwards. I'm in from Phoenix. Did you get
- 15:07Speaker 8: my wire?
- 15:08Speaker 5: One moment, sir.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Joe Edwards? Yeah, that's right.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Would you sign the register, please?
- 15:14Speaker 8: Yeah, all right.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 15:23Speaker 3: What?
- 15:24Speaker 5: Yes, sir. Would you show this gentleman room 211, please? Yes, sir.
- 15:28Speaker 5: This way, please.
- 15:29Speaker 8: All right. Thank you.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Go ahead, sir.
- 15:35Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Two, please. Not very nice weather to arrive in Los Angeles,
- 15:48Speaker 5: is it, sir?
- 15:49Speaker 8: No, not too good.
- 15:50Speaker 5: I see by the stickers on your bag you've been
- 15:52Speaker 5: through Arizona. Yeah, that's right. Must be nice weather down there, huh?
- 15:56Speaker 8: Yeah, it's all right.
- 16:00Speaker 5: This way, sir.
- 16:01Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Let me open the window for you, sir. A little
- 16:13Speaker 5: fresh air in here.
- 16:14Speaker 8: All right.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:19Speaker 8: Okay. Thanks.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Here you go. Thank you very much, sir. Help you
- 16:24Speaker 5: with your bags? Yeah, all.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry, sir. Something dropped out on the floor here.
- 16:32Speaker 8: You better let me have that.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Sorry. Very sorry that happened.
- 16:36Speaker 8: That's all right.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Mr.
- 16:44Speaker 12: Edwards, while you're in town here, if there's anything I
- 16:46Speaker 12: can do for you, don't hesitate to let me know.
- 16:48Speaker 8: Yeah, okay.
- 16:50Speaker 5: I couldn't help but notice that little package there that
- 16:52Speaker 5: I dropped. Yeah. Well, like I say, I know my
- 16:55Speaker 5: way around here in this town. If you need anything,
- 16:57Speaker 5: you know anything at all, sir. I'll tell you what.
- 17:00Speaker 8: Now, here's five bucks.
- 17:02Speaker 7: You never saw anything fall out of my bag there, right?
- 17:05Speaker 5: Anything you say, sir. Okay. Thanks a lot. See you later, huh? Yes, sir.
- 17:11Speaker 5: Anything else, sir?
- 17:12Speaker 8: No, no.
- 17:13Speaker 5: That'll be all. You remember what I told you, sir?
- 17:18Speaker 8: Yeah, I was just going to say the same thing
- 17:20Speaker 8: to you.
- 17:20Speaker 7: I couldn't be sure, but it looked like I'd been
- 17:28Speaker 7: lucky right from the start. The bellboy at the Plaza
- 17:30Speaker 7: Royal Hotel. I didn't know if I could consider this
- 17:33Speaker 7: an opening contact or not, but he seemed to show
- 17:36Speaker 7: more than a passing interest in the bindle of narcotics
- 17:38Speaker 7: that he had seen fall from my suitcase. I didn't
- 17:41Speaker 7: feel it was the right time to press the issue
- 17:42Speaker 7: any further.
- 17:43Speaker 8: With a bellhop, but I figured I'd wait and.
- 17:45Speaker 7: Leave the next move up to whoever he might have
- 17:46Speaker 7: been working for. During the next three days, nothing happened.
- 17:50Speaker 7: I tried, without appearing to be too bold, to arouse
- 17:53Speaker 7: some interest, but without success. October 13th, my fifth day
- 17:57Speaker 7: at the Plaza Royal Hotel, 6 p.m.
- 17:59Speaker 8: I went in the bar off the main lobby.
- 18:03Speaker 5: I beg your pardon?
- 18:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 12: Kirk Harding is my name. I noticed you here in
- 18:07Speaker 12: the bar the last couple of nights. You up here
- 18:08Speaker 12: to buy a little, or are you selling?
- 18:10Speaker 8: I don't believe I follow you, Harding.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Look, boy, we've had.
- 18:12Speaker 12: You tabbed since that first day you hit town, October 9th.
- 18:15Speaker 12: We haven't been out here too long ourselves. We're in business, too,
- 18:18Speaker 12: the same business you're in.
- 18:19Speaker 7: Well, I don't know what kind of business you think
- 18:21Speaker 7: I'm in, but you've got.
- 18:21Speaker 5: It figured wrong, mister.
- 18:23Speaker 12: You know, this entire matter would work out much better
- 18:24Speaker 12: for you in the long run if you'd level with me.
- 18:26Speaker 5: You're just going to make it tough on yourself this way, Mitch.
- 18:29Speaker 8: Well, I'm sorry. You lost me way back somewhere.
- 18:31Speaker 12: All right, let's do it the hard way. You're up
- 18:33Speaker 12: here from Phoenix. We know you've got some stuff with you.
- 18:36Speaker 12: We know you're not a user. You're a member of
- 18:38Speaker 12: the social club down there. You're a registered voter.
- 18:41Speaker 8: Oh, you've been working real hard, haven't you?
- 18:42Speaker 5: Well, there's more. You've got two pieces of luggage. You're
- 18:45Speaker 5: carrying a. 38 automatic. Any more? Yeah. There's a telegram
- 18:49Speaker 5: from a friend of mine down in Phoenix.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 18:51Speaker 5: We know all about you, mister.
- 18:52Speaker 8: The End.
- 19:03Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet. Authentic cases from official police files. Now,
- 19:10Speaker 4: let's look at our Fatima files. Listed under L.
- 19:16Speaker 5: Lovett. Vice Admiral Leland P. Lovett. United States Navy retired.
- 19:22Speaker 5: He says.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I smoked Fatimas when I was a midshipman.
- 19:26Speaker 5: I still do.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Because they have a better flavor and aroma.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Fatima is easily the best of all long cigarettes. Fatima.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Friends, more smokers now insist on king-size Fatimas than ever before.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Because in Fatima, the difference is quality.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Quality of tobaccos.
- 19:45Speaker 6: The finest domestic and Turkish varieties, extra mild.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Superbly blended.
- 19:51Speaker 6: To give you a much different, much better flavor and aroma.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Quality of manufacture. Smooth, round, perfect cigarettes. Rolled in the
- 20:00Speaker 6: finest paper money can buy. Manufactured in the newest and
- 20:04Speaker 6: most modern of all cigarette factories.
- 20:07Speaker 5: Quality.
- 20:08Speaker 6: Even to the appearance of the bright, clean, golden-yellow package,
- 20:12Speaker 6: carefully wrapped and sealed to bring you Fatima's rich, fresh,
- 20:16Speaker 6: extra-mild flavor. So, if you smoke a king-size cigarette, compare Fatima.
- 20:23Speaker 6: You'll find they now cost the same. But your first
- 20:26Speaker 6: puff will.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Tell you, Ah, that's different. Yes, in Fatima, the difference
- 20:33Speaker 3: is quality. By Fatima. Smoke the quality king-size cigarette.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Fatima. Best of all long cigarettes.
- 20:46Speaker 7: It was a tight moment as Kirk Harding fingered the
- 20:54Speaker 7: telegram in the bar of the Plaza Royal Hotel. I'd
- 20:57Speaker 7: spent many hours in consultation with Sergeant Roberts in Phoenix,
- 21:00Speaker 7: Arizona before undertaking this assignment. I felt sure that we
- 21:03Speaker 7: hadn't overlooked anything that might lead to.
- 21:05Speaker 8: My true identity.
- 21:07Speaker 7: Kirk Harding read the wire to me. It was from
- 21:09Speaker 7: a man by the name of George Ferguson. He'd done
- 21:11Speaker 7: some legwork for Harding and had not been able to
- 21:13Speaker 7: furnish him with anything other than what had been found
- 21:15Speaker 7: out in going over my room. I knew I'd found
- 21:18Speaker 7: the contact that I was looking for. I told him
- 21:21Speaker 7: that I was in the business of buying narcotics, that
- 21:23Speaker 7: I was in Los Angeles for the purpose of making
- 21:25Speaker 7: a prearranged narcotics buy with agents dealing in Mexican stuff.
- 21:29Speaker 7: Harding immediately gave me a strong sales pitch, saying that
- 21:32Speaker 7: he could furnish me with high-grade heroin fresh from the
- 21:35Speaker 7: European market in quantity. At the end of the first week,
- 21:39Speaker 7: I was introduced to Kirk Harding's two associates, another man
- 21:42Speaker 7: called Smith, full name Horace L. Smith, and a woman
- 21:45Speaker 7: by the name of Lucille Cosgrove. Ben had been unable
- 21:49Speaker 7: to find records on any of the three. For the
- 21:52Speaker 7: next three weeks, we became more friendly. We went places together,
- 21:55Speaker 7: spent a great deal of time together.
- 21:57Speaker 8: Monday, November 15th.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Well, we've had a lot of fun the last few weeks,
- 22:00Speaker 5: haven't we?
- 22:01Speaker 8: Yeah, there's no doubt about that, but I've got to
- 22:03Speaker 8: be getting back to Phoenix.
- 22:04Speaker 12: Well, now, don't get eager, Joe. You know how cagey
- 22:06Speaker 12: you were. You made us wait. Preliminaries are over. This
- 22:09Speaker 12: is the big buy for you or anybody else.
- 22:11Speaker 8: Yeah, I know all that, but who am I?
- 22:12Speaker 12: Just be patient. You'll have something to really set yourself
- 22:15Speaker 12: up with down there.
- 22:16Speaker 8: Okay.
- 22:16Speaker 5: Now, excuse me, Joe. Yeah, go ahead.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Oh, hi, Lucille.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Hi. Nice to meet you. Hello, Justin. Hi, Lucille.
- 22:25Speaker 8: Hello. What's the matter, Smith?
- 22:27Speaker 5: Don't you feel good? I don't know. It's hotel food,
- 22:30Speaker 5: I guess. I think I got an ulcer. My stomach's
- 22:33Speaker 5: sore all the time.
- 22:34Speaker 8: Oh, that's too bad.
- 22:35Speaker 5: I don't know what it could be. Baking soda don't
- 22:38Speaker 5: do any good anymore. How about a drink?
- 22:40Speaker 8: Joe?
- 22:40Speaker 7: Yeah, fine with me.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Well, sir, do you want to get some ice out
- 22:42Speaker 5: of the kitchen, please? Skip me. Smith, you ought to
- 22:47Speaker 5: go see a doctor. You don't know for sure what's
- 22:49Speaker 5: wrong with you. It might make it worse.
- 22:51Speaker 9: If I don't know what it is, how could a doctor?
- 22:53Speaker 5: I don't know. It works for everybody else. Might for you.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Hey, I can't get this ice tray out.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Joe, would you give me a.
- 23:00Speaker 5: Hand, please?
- 23:01Speaker 8: Yeah, sure. Okay, which one here? I got the ice.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Keep working on that other tray there. It's something to
- 23:12Speaker 5: tell you. Okay. Listen, Joe, big buys tonight. You sure?
- 23:19Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 23:19Speaker 2: How about it, you two?
- 23:20Speaker 5: You need any help?
- 23:21Speaker 8: No, it's all right, Kirk. Come along fine.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Joe, as soon as you show your money tonight, they're
- 23:24Speaker 5: going to kill you. How do you know? Look, we
- 23:27Speaker 5: don't have time to go into it.
- 23:28Speaker 8: I know.
- 23:29Speaker 5: You won't have a chance. They're going to kill you.
- 23:31Speaker 5: What are you doing?
- 23:32Speaker 2: Waiting for it to freeze?
- 23:33Speaker 6: Come on.
- 23:33Speaker 5: How about the ice cream? Oh, they're right here, Kirk.
- 23:34Speaker 8: I'm sorry.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 23:37Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Okay, what do you want? Lucille?
- 23:41Speaker 8: Joe?
- 23:42Speaker 2: Coke, hi, sir.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Joe? I'll make my own bourbon with a little water.
- 23:45Speaker 5: All right.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Smith, you sure you don't want one?
- 23:48Speaker 5: No, can't do it. Joe, before I mix them, I
- 23:51Speaker 5: got something for you.
- 23:52Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 23:53Speaker 5: Smith tells me tonight's the night.
- 23:55Speaker 8: Well, that's good, but.
- 23:57Speaker 7: Why don't you tell me a little ahead of time?
- 23:58Speaker 7: I got a date for tonight.
- 23:59Speaker 5: I think you better break that one and keep this one,
- 24:01Speaker 5: don't you?
- 24:02Speaker 7: Well, yeah, I do, but just wish you'd have told
- 24:05Speaker 7: me a little sooner.
- 24:05Speaker 5: There's the phone. You can take care of it.
- 24:08Speaker 8: Is it all right with you?
- 24:10Speaker 5: You know as much about this business as we do.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Go ahead and use it as long as we can
- 24:13Speaker 5: hear you. Okay, fine.
- 24:15Speaker 8: Just take a minute.
- 24:18Speaker 5: I'll sit here, Joe.
- 24:19Speaker 7: Oh, thanks, man.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:21Speaker 8: See, I wonder if you'd get my drink for me
- 24:22Speaker 8: over there. Sure. She's probably going to be upset. I
- 24:24Speaker 8: may need it, huh? Merrill talking.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Hi, honey.
- 24:43Speaker 8: This is Joe.
- 24:45Speaker 10: Oh, yeah, Joe.
- 24:46Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 24:46Speaker 7: I won't be able to make it tonight, dear.
- 24:48Speaker 2: You can't talk, huh?
- 24:49Speaker 5: That's right, dear.
- 24:51Speaker 8: No, I just can't get out of it.
- 24:52Speaker 7: I'll do the talking.
- 24:53Speaker 10: Joe is a-by tonight.
- 24:54Speaker 7: Yeah, well, it just came up all of a sudden.
- 24:57Speaker 11: Where do you know?
- 24:58Speaker 8: No, darling, I can't tell you where I'm going.
- 25:00Speaker 7: You couldn't go along anyway.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Okay, we'll be with you five minutes from now all
- 25:03Speaker 2: the way.
- 25:04Speaker 11: Where are you now, at the hotel?
- 25:05Speaker 7: Well, that's the way it is, and I can't help it,
- 25:07Speaker 7: that's all. Maybe we can get together later, huh? We'll
- 25:09Speaker 7: use one car, Joe.
- 25:10Speaker 2: We'll stick as close as we can to you.
- 25:12Speaker 8: One car ought to be safe, huh?
- 25:14Speaker 5: Well, that's better, honey.
- 25:15Speaker 8: That's the way I like to hear you talk.
- 25:16Speaker 5: I'm sorry. I'll see you later, huh?
- 25:18Speaker 7: We'll be with you.
- 25:19Speaker 8: Okay, dear.
- 25:20Speaker 5: Well, does she still love you?
- 25:25Speaker 8: Yeah, she loves me.
- 25:31Speaker 7: Fifteen minutes after I hung up, we went downstairs and
- 25:33Speaker 7: got into a green Chrysler sedan.
- 25:35Speaker 8: It was parked out in front of the hotel.
- 25:37Speaker 5: I looked around.
- 25:38Speaker 7: I didn't see Ben or any of our cars in sight.
- 25:41Speaker 7: Smith drove, and Kirk and I got in the back seat.
- 25:44Speaker 7: The woman, Lucille Cosgrove, remained at the hotel. I didn't
- 25:48Speaker 7: know which of the two men was planning to kill me,
- 25:50Speaker 7: but I felt sure Lucille Cosgrove told me the truth.
- 25:52Speaker 7: Her information on the buy was right, and maybe this
- 25:54Speaker 7: other was correct as well. We drove out Figueroa Street.
- 25:58Speaker 8: For about 16 miles.
- 25:59Speaker 7: At this point, it became evident we were heading for
- 26:01Speaker 7: the Los Angeles Harbor area.
- 26:05Speaker 5: You ever see a fog as thick as this, Jim?
- 26:07Speaker 8: No, never have.
- 26:09Speaker 9: Can't see 50 feet in front of me.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Yeah, well, just take it easy.
- 26:13Speaker 8: Nobody's in a hurry.
- 26:14Speaker 5: That's right. Don't want to pile up anywhere.
- 26:19Speaker 8: Where are we going?
- 26:20Speaker 5: We're almost there.
- 26:21Speaker 8: Is this your car here? I've never seen this one before.
- 26:25Speaker 5: No, we rented it. Isn't that the way you operate?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 26:28Speaker 8: I just wondered if you played it as safe as
- 26:30Speaker 8: I do.
- 26:30Speaker 5: We do.
- 26:31Speaker 9: I'm going to swing in this next alley up here, Kirk.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Somebody tailing us? Keep your lights.
- 26:38Speaker 8: All right.
- 26:41Speaker 9: See anything out the back window?
- 26:42Speaker 5: Wait a minute. There they go. How'd it look? Two
- 26:52Speaker 5: guys in the front seat. Could have been somebody. What
- 26:56Speaker 5: do you think, Joe? How'd it look to you?
- 26:58Speaker 8: Well, whoever it was, we lost them anyway. Yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Okay, let's go.
- 27:25Speaker 9: Look at that. Clear spot here in the fog. Don't
- 27:29Speaker 9: see a soul anywhere.
- 27:30Speaker 5: No, it's fine.
- 27:31Speaker 12: We almost there now? Yeah, just around the corner. This
- 27:35Speaker 12: is a break, isn't it? Fog's clear right in here.
- 27:38Speaker 12: All socked in back up there. Well, we're as safe
- 27:41Speaker 12: as you'd want to be, huh?
- 27:42Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right.
- 27:44Speaker 5: This is it.
- 27:46Speaker 9: Over by the storage building?
- 27:47Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right. Come on, let's go. Over this way, Joe.
- 27:58Speaker 8: What's over there in that building?
- 27:59Speaker 5: We're not going inside. Just over there in that alcove.
- 28:03Speaker 5: All right, this is it, Joe. Let's see the money.
- 28:05Speaker 8: Well, wait till I see the stuff, huh?
- 28:07Speaker 5: You don't trust anybody, do you?
- 28:08Speaker 8: Joe!
- 28:12Speaker 5: What are you trying to prove?
- 28:13Speaker 8: Well, I didn't like what he said.
- 28:14Speaker 2: You're not going to like what I got to say either.
- 28:16Speaker 5: Freeze, mister. Drop it, you! Watch it, Ben!
- 28:26Speaker 8: He ducked in this alcove.
- 28:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 8: Oh!
- 28:29Speaker 6: Take care of that one there.
- 28:30Speaker 8: Hard easy, huh?
- 28:32Speaker 5: Yeah, you see him?
- 28:34Speaker 8: No, it's too dark.
- 28:36Speaker 5: There he is. Come on out.
- 28:39Speaker 2: All right, throw your gun out ahead of you.
- 28:41Speaker 6: He's not going to throw that gun out, Joe.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Watch it.
- 28:48Speaker 8: Come on.
- 28:56Speaker 5: There's his gun. Yeah, I got it. You want to
- 28:59Speaker 5: shake him down? Yeah.
- 29:01Speaker 8: Come on.
- 29:02Speaker 5: On your feet. Where'd you get hit? High shore.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Let me see.
- 29:07Speaker 5: You're all right. Just grazed you. You're a cop, aren't you?
- 29:10Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right. Now, come on, let's go.
- 29:11Speaker 5: Where's this stuff?
- 29:12Speaker 12: On the back seat in my car. Now, you tell
- 29:14Speaker 12: me something. Why'd you slug Smith?
- 29:17Speaker 8: I just wanted something I knew you'd never give me.
- 29:19Speaker 5: What's that?
- 29:20Speaker 8: An even chance.
- 29:28Speaker 3: The story you have just heard was true. Only the
- 29:31Speaker 3: names were changed to protect the innocents.
- 29:34Speaker 4: On January 4th, trial was held in Superior Court, Department 81,
- 29:37Speaker 4: City and County of Los Angeles, State of California. In
- 29:40Speaker 4: a moment, the results of that trial. And now here
- 29:43Speaker 4: is our star, Jack Webb.
- 29:44Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 29:45Speaker 7: Friends, let's compare Fatima with any other long cigarette. Now,
- 29:49Speaker 7: Fatimas are the same length, 85 millimeters. Fatima has the
- 29:52Speaker 7: same circumference, 1 1 64 inches around. And Fatima filters
- 29:57Speaker 7: the smoke exactly the same long distance as other king-size cigarettes.
- 30:01Speaker 7: But in Fatima, the difference is quality. You get extra.
- 30:04Speaker 8: Mildness, a different, much better flavor and aroma. That's right.
- 30:08Speaker 7: Fatima gives you all the advantages of extra length plus
- 30:11Speaker 7: Fatima quality, which no other king-size cigarette has.
- 30:15Speaker 8: Tomorrow, buy Fatima.
