- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley, the ucon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, Mike chris
- 0:03Pino, the Husky seven and zero on the Year of You and h The
- 0:06other night at Gample, they were an interesting team. I really was pretty
- 0:11impressed with Nathan Davis' first year guy there. Husky's won by twenty. They're
- 0:16supposed to win, obviously, But you, as the coach on your side
- 0:20of things, how do you rate what happens in games like that? I
- 0:24mean, winning is winning. I don't care what anybody says. I don't
- 0:26care what the numbers say. Winning is winning. But from your perspective,
- 0:31what did you see there? Yeah? You know, for me, I
- 0:34thought there was some Yeah, there was an opportunity for us to put together
- 0:39a dominant performance that that that we would feel much better about. But there
- 0:45were you know, there were stretches, you know of three point line defense
- 0:51that was just, you know, just completely unacceptable. I think when we
- 0:55made the edit of of our three point line defense, uh from this New
- 1:00Hampshire game, uh, we likened it to our three point line defense against
- 1:04Saint Joe's year two, where we gave up thirteen made threes and lost.
- 1:11Uh. Yeah, the worst loss since I've been here. You know that
- 1:15New Mexico State. I mean, they're both fighting for that honor, uh
- 1:19or the dishonor so. I mean to have the amount of breakdowns that we
- 1:25had, and you know, I think that they are actually a hard team
- 1:29to play against, and you know, without a center and with all really
- 1:34you know, really good shooters and a point guard that you know, broke
- 1:38our will a little bit with his ability to drive the ball. I was
- 1:42not a happy I wasn't happy in the locker room obviously the day after or
- 1:49the or the or the days after. You know, you've got a foul
- 1:53taste in your mouth anytime that you don't perform up to the standard. You're
- 1:59gonna misshots. You're gonna make shots. The three point shooting is not you
- 2:04know, four to twenty eight on mostly really good looks at three. Yeah,
- 2:07that doesn't sit well. But it was more of the the soft things,
- 2:13the uh, not doing the hard things well, the concentration the basketball
- 2:17IQ. There's a lot of resources that are invested in this group to put
- 2:23forth, you know, a championship type of effort, and that's not it.
- 2:30Yeah. One of the things I was thinking as the game went on.
- 2:32Is that the pushing the pace like you and h did for the most
- 2:37part, is that a concern to you going forward? Do you think teams
- 2:40will try to do that against you, try to get up the court and
- 2:44get quicker shots and beat your defense up there and try to do some damage
- 2:49like that. Yeah, I mean some will you know, we send obviously
- 2:53we go to the offensive glass, so that's always a concern. But you
- 2:58know, just like it's worth it to go for it on fourth and two,
- 3:01fourth and one, it's a lot of times it's worth it to go
- 3:07get possession of the ball again, because the most important thing in basketball is
- 3:12to have possession. So yeah, when you send as many people as we
- 3:16do to the glass, that's a concern. But we also got caught,
- 3:23you know, just Donovan guarding their five men who had five or six threes,
- 3:25and it's such a unique player put us in a situation where we ended
- 3:32up in one three one trying to protect that matchup, and then on made
- 3:38baskets, they really pushed the ball and we had a hard time getting into
- 3:42it and we gave up some threes that way. Yeah, that leads to
- 3:46the discussion of Hunter Dickinson. Right, he's at Kansas now from Michigan.
- 3:51He's made some threes this year, eight of twelve. He's scoring twenty one
- 3:54points a game, averages thirteen rebounds. Will that be a major consideration when
- 4:00you figure out how we're going to defend this guy if he goes out behind
- 4:02the ark and starts firing away. Yeah, well it's it's obviously he's a
- 4:08seven footer, and uh, he's moving into his threes in a much different
- 4:13way than a you know, than a six' four, six' five,
- 4:17you know, three four, which is who basically done it and Samson
- 4:21were guarding last night. So there's probably just not a lot of parallels with
- 4:28how you know, the New Hampshire five men were getting the threes and the
- 4:33way Hunter does. Hunter's going to be gettinghim as a trailer. Hunter is
- 4:36going to be getting him on short picking pops, you know, by a
- 4:41big center. So yeah, we've got to get out there with him.
- 4:45He could certainly shoot. Yeah, he's seven sixty obviously transferred from Michigan.
- 4:49They got to transfer from Texas Tech. Kevin mccullor, a grad guard averaging
- 4:55eighteen points a game. Uh, you had a chance to take a look
- 4:59at what he'd does and what kind of problems is that guy going to present.
- 5:02Yeah, I mean a real technician, and yeah, just a tremendous
- 5:08positional player or just a world of experience. I remember watching Hunter in Grassroots
- 5:15and just how how technically sound he was in his IQ and his feel.
- 5:21And he's got a nasty attitude. You know, if he's kicking your ass,
- 5:26he's going to tell you about it. So not that you need any
- 5:30more motivation, but great positional player, great over either shoulder, and a
- 5:35nasty competitor and a great rebounder. Donovan Klington is going to be, you
- 5:42know, a factor obviously all year long. The last couple of games,
- 5:45you've been pounding it down against these smaller teams and he has brought the brought
- 5:48an a game to a twenty nine points career high the other night against U
- 5:51n H. What are you seeing with him physically right now? He's coming
- 5:57back from that foot issue that was you know, kept them really off the
- 6:00court almost a month. Does he look more like a guy developing into the
- 6:03sophomore center you're looking for for this team? He looks a little more I
- 6:08don't want to say defined, but the way he's being aggressive immediately when he
- 6:13gets the ball in that low post. Yeah, I mean he's got to
- 6:15get better the whole year. You know, you start your sophomore year,
- 6:19you know, playing at a certain level and just like you do your freshman
- 6:24year and with the experience. You know, in a similar way too.
- 6:29You know Andre's improvement from the beginning of his junior year to the end,
- 6:32Jordan's sophomore year beginning to its end. You know Adama from when he walked
- 6:38on campus Scott here as a as a layup maker and like an under the
- 6:45offensive, rebounding butt kicker. And over the course of your career, you
- 6:48develop new skills, you develop a better understanding, and you become a more
- 6:54well rounded player. So you think, you know, obviously he's going to
- 6:59develop a lot. Yeah, and don't forget that Dama started making threes.
- 7:02People are always asking me that I remember a Dama making threes like crazy,
- 7:06and like he never took a three in his first year, And I'm like,
- 7:09well, he got better and better and he had a little range and
- 7:13they left him open and he made shots. Yeah, it's the it's the
- 7:15evolution. It's great players. They had, they had new skills. They
- 7:21go into every new season with a different shot or a different aspect of their
- 7:27game. And that's what the great ones do, all right, Dan Hurley
- 7:30with us the Ukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. A little later on, we'll
- 7:33talk to Donovan Klingen. We're gonna talk a little about in North Carolina because
- 7:38the Garden is going to be where you kind of meet them in another few
- 7:42days. All that coming up as we continue with Dan Hurley on the Yukon
- 7:45Men's Basketball Coaches Show from Learfield,
