- 0:48Speaker 1: You know the good runners.
- 0:49Speaker 5: They have a little spaghetti sauce to the recipe. That's important.
- 0:54Speaker 5: And I don't want to make comparisons to him because
- 0:57Speaker 5: I haven't been with him long enough. When you see
- 1:01Speaker 5: the consistency, it's not an accident, and so it's another
- 1:06Speaker 5: and I and I say this, it's another good football
- 1:09Speaker 5: player we're adding to our team. And then we'll see
- 1:14Speaker 5: how training camp goes, see how all the carries goes,
- 1:17Speaker 5: and you know what When that time comes, you guys
- 1:19Speaker 5: are going to know, just like I'm gonna know.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You're gonna see it.

- 1:31Speaker 7: Jeff Legwold, are you a.
- 1:32Speaker 6: Homemade spaghetti sauce tomato sauce guy?
- 1:35Speaker 7: Are you the ragu type?
- 1:39Speaker 1: You know? I'll uh, I'll make my own.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Really? Oh yeah, I like it. I like it.
- 1:45Speaker 7: How long does it make you?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Oh? It depends how complicated I get. You know, it's
- 1:51Speaker 1: just the regular sauce. And you know, booom done.
- 1:55Speaker 6: What are the odds that you can make spaghetti sauce
- 1:58Speaker 6: and then give me someone a jar at training camp?
- 2:00Speaker 7: Coming up in a.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Zero almost to zero?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Oh?
- 2:04Speaker 6: Come on, hey, Lakey, It's not like I'm asking you
- 2:10Speaker 6: for who's number sixty seven in your top one hundred.
- 2:12Speaker 7: It's not a huge ask.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I mean it's almost like that. You know, I don't
- 2:16Speaker 1: bring my life out to training camp. You know that
- 2:19Speaker 1: this is a dividing line.
- 2:21Speaker 2: It's important thing though, I'll be on record a thing
- 2:23Speaker 2: before we get the football spaghetti sauce home.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Jar. I don't care.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I'm a spaghetti sauce fan. Yeah, I don't care if
- 2:32Speaker 2: you think it's good. I'll eat spaghetti sauce all day,
- 2:35Speaker 2: all night.
- 2:37Speaker 6: So Sehn Payton likes the different spaghetti sauces in the
- 2:41Speaker 6: running back room. Let me tell you this, though I
- 2:43Speaker 6: asked this to Andy Linda all early Yearho was that
- 2:45Speaker 6: camp yesterday, I'll ask.
- 2:46Speaker 7: It to you.
- 2:48Speaker 6: With the running back room that they have now with
- 2:50Speaker 6: Dobbins and obviously R. J.
- 2:52Speaker 7: Harvey is gonna be a big part of it.
- 2:53Speaker 6: I was looking up some Julie McLoughlin numbers and he's
- 2:56Speaker 6: just a very unique case because he was probably their
- 2:59Speaker 6: most productive back last year. But for a guy who's
- 3:01Speaker 6: five foot seven, not very big, it's hard to see
- 3:04Speaker 6: him being in on third down to pass protect. And
- 3:07Speaker 6: at his size, you think he's gonna be a shifty
- 3:09Speaker 6: guy who has big playability.
- 3:11Speaker 7: His longest run was twenty one yards last year.
- 3:14Speaker 6: And here's the one that really stuck out to me,
- 3:15Speaker 6: Leggy like, maybe he could be a Sprolls type, smaller
- 3:18Speaker 6: guy out of the backfield, catch the ball, make something happen.
- 3:21Speaker 6: He had twenty four catches for seventy six yards, which
- 3:24Speaker 6: is really bad. So what is Julia McLoughlin to this
- 3:27Speaker 6: team right now, and what's a rule that's envisioned for him.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Well, I think the whole Dobbins signing, you know, whether
- 3:35Speaker 1: they just say it out loud or not, is they
- 3:39Speaker 1: went through OTA's, they went through rookie mini camp and
- 3:42Speaker 1: got you know a little look at Harvey, and they
- 3:45Speaker 1: even went through you know, got all the way to
- 3:48Speaker 1: mini camp before they signed Dobbins. And they did it
- 3:52Speaker 1: because I believe Sean Payton was still simply uncomfortable with
- 3:57Speaker 1: what does third down look like for this offense? So
- 4:02Speaker 1: you know, he got a little insurance Dobbins was out there.
- 4:06Speaker 1: They had a little leverage because of this really odd
- 4:11Speaker 1: tender the Chargers used contractually that not many teams do.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I don't think I've seen it but a handful of
- 4:18Speaker 1: times since free agency began in the nineties. So you
- 4:24Speaker 1: know that this was a to me, a third down decision.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And you know, yesterday we're all asking everyone about Dobbins
- 4:32Speaker 1: and what they think, and Vance Joseph may have said
- 4:37Speaker 1: it the best. He listed, you know, ability as a runner,
- 4:41Speaker 1: ability to break tackles, and then he said his intelligence
- 4:45Speaker 1: on third down, and it just sort of let you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: this is a big part of Dobbins's game, and I
- 4:52Speaker 1: think it right now, it's the biggest part of why
- 4:56Speaker 1: he's here. And I think that's why Peyton has framed
- 4:58Speaker 1: it with we'll see how the carries go because he
- 5:02Speaker 1: may get surprised in training camp. Harvey may be better
- 5:06Speaker 1: on third down than they think initially right now. But
- 5:10Speaker 1: jalil Ah I think could play on third down a
- 5:15Speaker 1: little more if they were a little more creative about
- 5:18Speaker 1: where they put him, you know, to put him in
- 5:20Speaker 1: the traditional spot and have him take on edge rushers,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I think is a tough ask for him. Yeah, but
- 5:29Speaker 1: I think there's more there than they've gotten, and you know,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I just you know, it's like estimate. I think there's
- 5:37Speaker 1: more there than they've gotten, but there's only one ball,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and they seem to want to, you know, spread it
- 5:45Speaker 1: around a lot at that position until one of those
- 5:49Speaker 1: guys just shows proves to the head coach okay, I
- 5:53Speaker 1: can play in every situation with reliability, and then I
- 5:57Speaker 1: think that person would get the bulk of the work.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But you know, jo Leo is they like him so
- 6:04Speaker 1: much in house, and there's so much to like about
- 6:07Speaker 1: him as a player or a person that I think
- 6:11Speaker 1: the football thing I think is still in there. I mean,
- 6:14Speaker 1: I watched so much of his college video, and there's
- 6:19Speaker 1: a physical runner in there, a high carry guy in college.
- 6:23Speaker 1: There's no reason he couldn't do more. I just don't
- 6:27Speaker 1: think they get him into the space where he can flourish.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You know, it's funny when you're describing that back in
- 6:34Speaker 2: every situation and so on. I guess for the longest time,
- 6:37Speaker 2: I thought that was going to be Tavante Williams. I
- 6:40Speaker 2: thought that he was going to be, you know, that
- 6:41Speaker 2: guy that could be and then the injury and then
- 6:44Speaker 2: he long gone. Hey what I guess My story with
- 6:47Speaker 2: Dobbins is I think he's he's a player. I really do, Jeff.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I mean, he averaged almost five yards of carry last
- 6:52Speaker 2: year for the Chargers. The only question to me is
- 6:55Speaker 2: a health right? Can he stay healthy? Number two? If
- 7:00Speaker 2: he played thirteen games last year, why did the Chargers
- 7:02Speaker 2: not want to keep him?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Well, they not only didn't want to keep him, apparently,
- 7:08Speaker 1: they signed Naji Harris free agency, and they draft Hampton
- 7:13Speaker 1: Omarion Hampton in the first round, and then they still
- 7:17Speaker 1: they did all that and still tendered him this this
- 7:21Speaker 1: weird unrestricted free agent tender.
- 7:24Speaker 7: What does that mean?
- 7:25Speaker 4: I think they're looking for compensation. Right.
- 7:28Speaker 1: If he had not signed with the Broncos or anybody
- 7:31Speaker 1: else by July twenty third, the Chargers would have retained
- 7:35Speaker 1: exclusive negotiating rights with him. He would not have been
- 7:39Speaker 1: able to negotiate with another team. Not many teams put
- 7:43Speaker 1: it on a guy because it's you know, frankly, it's
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's restrictive and it's not a nice thing to do.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But it's not a franchise player tag or anything like that.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It's just it's in the CBA and it doesn't get
- 7:56Speaker 1: used very often. But you know, my thing with that is,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know, the yards per carry, yes, but most of
- 8:05Speaker 1: that is the first two games of the season. You know,
- 8:08Speaker 1: he had another nice game against the Broncos later, but
- 8:13Speaker 1: the bulk of you know, after those first two games
- 8:16Speaker 1: of the year, he averaged three point eight to carry
- 8:20Speaker 1: the rest of the season. So you know, that's my question,
- 8:24Speaker 1: are they simply replacing Javonte Williams. And you know, look,
- 8:28Speaker 1: if if he passed protects as well as Javante does
- 8:31Speaker 1: did and catches fifty balls, you know, I bet he
- 8:35Speaker 1: breaks a big player or two because he's had the
- 8:41Speaker 1: a similar kind of knee injury as as Chavante Williams had.
- 8:45Speaker 1: He's also had a torn achilles and last year he
- 8:48Speaker 1: missed four games with a knee sprain, which you know
- 8:52Speaker 1: can happen to anybody. But but they think there's explosiveness
- 8:57Speaker 1: there and I think we'll be able to see, you know,
- 9:00Speaker 1: what level there is in camp. But he certainly fits
- 9:05Speaker 1: their locker room. I mean, it doesn't take long to
- 9:08Speaker 1: see he's got a pretty big personality and and really
- 9:12Speaker 1: does want to win, you know, and he's played for,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you know, for both Harbaugh's you know, as head coaches,
- 9:19Speaker 1: so you know he can be coached really hard. And
- 9:23Speaker 1: I think, you know, that's a Sean Payton type of player. Uh,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you know, Sean is very close to John Harbaugh in particular. Yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 1: they coached together with the Eagles, So I think this
- 9:36Speaker 1: is a fit for them. It didn't come at a
- 9:38Speaker 1: very high price. If it works out, it's a huge
- 9:42Speaker 1: bonus you have.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Speaking of Peyton, you've figuratively taken the temperature of a
- 9:47Speaker 2: lot of coaches in your career. Hey, how long does
- 9:50Speaker 2: it take you to kind of get the feel of
- 9:52Speaker 2: a coach and where his mind is his personality. And
- 9:56Speaker 2: two is Sean Payton back to being grumpy Sean Payton
- 9:59Speaker 2: because it's like he's all business in his little mini
- 10:03Speaker 2: camp here.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I think he'll be all business a lot with this
- 10:08Speaker 1: team most he Uh, he likes this team definitely. I
- 10:12Speaker 1: can tell you that he very much is a big
- 10:15Speaker 1: fan of his roster right now, and he thinks if
- 10:19Speaker 1: they handle their business, they can do some things. But
- 10:23Speaker 1: I think that will make him push them really hard.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I don't think training camp is going to be a
- 10:28Speaker 1: fun fest, uh for these guys. I think he's gonna
- 10:32Speaker 1: come in after a month away in late July and
- 10:37Speaker 1: be ready to turn the screws a little bit so.
- 10:41Speaker 1: But I think that the temperature I see from him
- 10:44Speaker 1: right now is he likes this team a lot. He
- 10:47Speaker 1: thinks they've done well in building the roster, you know,
- 10:51Speaker 1: over the over the last couple of years.
- 10:53Speaker 6: Jeff Leewell at ESPN dot com with us, you know,
- 10:56Speaker 6: sticking with the offensive side.
- 10:58Speaker 7: Evan Ingram brought in a time, Vic said, You've been there.
- 11:03Speaker 7: It's odd to find a tight end that's smaller than Cortland.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Sutton and you know, there's a bunch of tight ends
- 11:10Speaker 6: in the league that don't block that just put up
- 11:12Speaker 6: numbers in the passing game, and and that matters. But
- 11:15Speaker 6: what do you think the line is for a successful
- 11:18Speaker 6: season for Evan Ingram?
- 11:20Speaker 1: You know, I've said, I think it's more what kinds
- 11:23Speaker 1: of passes is he catching rather than the number the
- 11:26Speaker 1: totals per se. I think if we see him going
- 11:29Speaker 1: down the hash a lot, if you know, if we
- 11:33Speaker 1: see some run after the catch we didn't necessarily see
- 11:37Speaker 1: in recent seasons, I think that's a successful year. If
- 11:41Speaker 1: they get him, you know, into those spaces where he
- 11:45Speaker 1: can do damage. But his best routes in the middle
- 11:50Speaker 1: of the field are the throws bow Nicks likes to
- 11:53Speaker 1: make the best. So I think it's a it's a
- 11:55Speaker 1: good combination there. And the thing for Nicks is h
- 12:00Speaker 1: Ingram's always been a really good route runner. He is
- 12:03Speaker 1: exactly where he's supposed to be and that's huge for
- 12:08Speaker 1: a QB. So I think those those things would mark
- 12:12Speaker 1: success for me. But you know, if you you know,
- 12:16Speaker 1: to me, when I look at like last year and
- 12:19Speaker 1: you say, okay, where are those fifty catches? Javonte Williams had.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Where are they going? I think a bunch of them
- 12:25Speaker 1: are going to Evan Ingram, Yeah, and I think that
- 12:27Speaker 1: was the design. I think they want to take that
- 12:30Speaker 1: safety throw that was going to Javonte Williams, and I
- 12:34Speaker 1: think they want that going down the field a little
- 12:37Speaker 1: more to where the tight end is.
- 12:40Speaker 6: This is h I mean, this is probably a question
- 12:43Speaker 6: that a lot of people are going to hear and
- 12:45Speaker 6: say who cares?
- 12:47Speaker 1: But they asked a lot of those Yeah, I've made
- 12:51Speaker 1: a career out of it.
- 12:53Speaker 6: They used this last year and he's back on the
- 12:55Speaker 6: team with more weapons now on off events, especially the
- 13:01Speaker 6: tight end. Is Michael Burton still a thing that they're
- 13:04Speaker 6: gonna use a lot? Are they gonna Are they gonna
- 13:06Speaker 6: run fullback out there?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Again?
- 13:08Speaker 7: Maybe he's sort of a answerary question to some bigger ones,
- 13:12Speaker 7: but I'm just curious.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Well, I mean, Sean Payton goes into every game with
- 13:17Speaker 1: a play sheet roughly the size of a mid size sedan,
- 13:21Speaker 1: so uh, there will be full back plays on there.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And look, special teams is important to the head coach.
- 13:31Speaker 1: You know, we may all argue about, Okay, how much
- 13:33Speaker 1: does it really mean? And all that it's important to
- 13:35Speaker 1: the guy who makes a lot of decisions and he's
- 13:39Speaker 1: one of the best special teams players on the team, So, uh,
- 13:43Speaker 1: that immediately gives him some kind of role. But they
- 13:47Speaker 1: you know, he will always have a fullback element in
- 13:51Speaker 1: his offense. It's how he it's how he was.
- 13:53Speaker 7: I guess, well, I guess to ask it in a
- 13:57Speaker 7: different way.
- 13:58Speaker 6: It's you've been on this forever, and I don't know
- 14:00Speaker 6: if last year maybe change your mind a little bit
- 14:02Speaker 6: more or not. But when the Broncos would spread out
- 14:04Speaker 6: their offense and they would get pressure on the quarterback,
- 14:08Speaker 6: You're like, why not run more two tight end sets?
- 14:10Speaker 6: Do you think they have the ability right now to
- 14:13Speaker 6: not go a little bit bigger for pass protection purposes
- 14:16Speaker 6: and hold up in pass protection by spreading it out more.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Now, Well, I've always thought they should spread it out
- 14:22Speaker 1: with bigger people, and that would that would lead me
- 14:24Speaker 1: some of those problems. Yeah, because you're making the defense
- 14:28Speaker 1: respond with bigger people and putting the You're putting the
- 14:32Speaker 1: defense as big people in space, which is what I
- 14:34Speaker 1: would want to do if I was calling place. But uh,
- 14:38Speaker 1: they're They're always going to have a big personnel element
- 14:42Speaker 1: to the offense. He's always believed in it. He thinks
- 14:46Speaker 1: there's a place for it. It's why he wants his
- 14:48Speaker 1: receivers frankly to be six two six, three, six four,
- 14:54Speaker 1: you know, two oh five to ten. That's why he
- 14:56Speaker 1: wants big receivers. He wants the cality on the field.
- 15:01Speaker 1: So yeah, that that element's gonna be there and that,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you know, unless they have to have that those last
- 15:08Speaker 1: couple roster spots for somebody they're desperate to keep, you know,
- 15:12Speaker 1: they could do like last year Burton spent time on
- 15:15Speaker 1: the practice squad, uh with the sort of wink, wink,
- 15:19Speaker 1: we'll we'll bring you to the fifty three as soon
- 15:21Speaker 1: as possible. So there's always the chance they do that
- 15:25Speaker 1: again because he's already shown for this head coach, he
- 15:29Speaker 1: trusts him enough to do that.
- 15:30Speaker 4: As a veteran player, when was the last time you
- 15:32Speaker 4: talked to a kicker or a punter?
- 15:35Speaker 2: Me?
- 15:35Speaker 1: I've said hello, and like, you know, spoken to punters
- 15:38Speaker 1: and kickers why, I.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Mean, just like, Hi, how you doing? I'm Jeff okay,
- 15:42Speaker 2: see a letter? I mean, there's nothing to talk to.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I'm just thinking of of what a great job, great
- 15:46Speaker 2: sitcom this would be. Let's in the craw Dad, that'd
- 15:51Speaker 2: be great.
- 15:51Speaker 7: With you're talking that lately.
- 15:54Speaker 4: No no, no, no, no, no, no, no no no. Jeremy Krass, what's.
- 15:59Speaker 1: In the you're on the kicker, you're on the kicker
- 16:01Speaker 1: on the but you know there's not much better.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And you're the one who said special teams is important, Jack,
- 16:05Speaker 4: not me.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Now you know mandatory mini camp that there's a lot
- 16:09Speaker 1: of standing around for the kicker of the punter, for sure.
- 16:12Speaker 1: You know, they come in, they get, they get.
- 16:15Speaker 4: And always has been yep, cracks me up.
- 16:19Speaker 2: You know what.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Back in the day, the guys used to play like
- 16:23Speaker 1: football golf. The kicker and the punter would play like
- 16:25Speaker 1: football golf on the other on the other field. But
- 16:29Speaker 1: they can't do that now.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Last thing for you, Leg, it's I think the way
- 16:35Speaker 6: that you go about building a team. It's what we
- 16:37Speaker 6: talked about a lot with the Nuggets that there felt
- 16:39Speaker 6: like there was a failure of organizational cohesion over the
- 16:42Speaker 6: last couple of years about how the GM wanted to
- 16:44Speaker 6: build the team and how the head coach wanted to
- 16:46Speaker 6: use the ingredients he was given. I really appreciate the
- 16:51Speaker 6: way that Sean Payton and George Peyton have gone about this,
- 16:54Speaker 6: this rebuild, if you want to call it. They start
- 16:57Speaker 6: with the trenches in year one and they've just kind
- 16:59Speaker 6: of built out since then, right, and now it feels
- 17:03Speaker 6: like they've taken care of the positions that are I
- 17:06Speaker 6: guess lowest on the totem pole for most NFL gms,
- 17:09Speaker 6: like linebacker and running back or two things that they're like, oh,
- 17:12Speaker 6: we can go and find those occasionally, but they've gotten
- 17:15Speaker 6: green Law. They've now invested in Harvey and JK. Dobbins,
- 17:19Speaker 6: which tells me, going to the running back spot that
- 17:24Speaker 6: I think this year there's going to be a difference
- 17:27Speaker 6: in the way that it's used. And I guess we
- 17:28Speaker 6: won't really know until the games are played, but to
- 17:31Speaker 6: make an investment like that tells me that the guys
- 17:35Speaker 6: that you had last year, you just didn't feel like
- 17:38Speaker 6: we're cutting it because somehow, like you explain this to me,
- 17:41Speaker 6: the Broncos weren't a good rushing team and yet all
- 17:43Speaker 6: of these different ways that people grade out offensive lines,
- 17:47Speaker 6: they're top five in rush in run blocking, So how
- 17:50Speaker 6: does that compute.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Well, you know, he's alluded to it, he hasn't said
- 17:56Speaker 1: it like blatantly said it, but he has alluded to
- 18:00Speaker 1: the fact. You know, sometimes with a scout or a
- 18:03Speaker 1: coach in the run game, you'll hear the phrase there
- 18:07Speaker 1: was still meat on the bone, and what that means
- 18:11Speaker 1: is did the back get at minimum what was blocked
- 18:16Speaker 1: on the play? And they're feeling in house when they
- 18:20Speaker 1: reviewed was their backs did not get what was blocked
- 18:25Speaker 1: enough times. And that's why they traded up in the
- 18:28Speaker 1: second round to take a running back. And that's why
- 18:31Speaker 1: they've they've signed Dobbins now is because they they you know,
- 18:36Speaker 1: they liked a lot of what the backs did. They
- 18:38Speaker 1: liked certain things, but in general, in the end, they
- 18:43Speaker 1: decided too often the back did not get what was blocked.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And that's you know, the spaghetti sauce quote from yesterday
- 18:52Speaker 1: is did you get what was blocked? And then a
- 18:55Speaker 1: little more because you're a good back. Yes, that's what
- 19:00Speaker 1: he wants. He wants what's blocked plus a little more.
- 19:04Speaker 1: You know that every defensive coordinator will tell you the
- 19:09Speaker 1: running back has the first defender. You know that you
- 19:13Speaker 1: can square up run blocking schemes and run defense schemes,
- 19:18Speaker 1: but in the end, the first defender is the guy
- 19:22Speaker 1: the running back has to be on his own usually
- 19:26Speaker 1: no matter where that first defender comes, is it eight
- 19:28Speaker 1: yards away from the line five or whatever. But that's
- 19:32Speaker 1: what he's talking about. That's why these guys are here.
- 19:34Speaker 1: They didn't get what was blocked. And you know, there
- 19:37Speaker 1: are several metrics that say the Broncos were the best
- 19:41Speaker 1: run block team in the league last year by what
- 19:44Speaker 1: space did you create on the play. So that's why
- 19:48Speaker 1: they are where they are right now and why they've
- 19:50Speaker 1: done what they've done.
