- 1:45get this guy in the show because he's just a unique individual.
- 1:49Ladies and gentlemen, we are now talking to former 10 year MLB
- 1:53shortstop, 16 year MLB manager and founder of Bobby Valentine
- 2:00Sports Academy. The one, the only Bobby
- 2:04Valentine. Bobby, what's up, buddy?
- 2:07Wow, what an introduction. Hey, I've been listening to you
- 2:11for the last 20 minutes and I you want me to talk a while just
- 2:15to give your voice a break. Good job, dude.
- 2:18I mean, you could, you could yell with the best of them, I'll
- 2:20tell you that. And very succinct.
- 2:23Good job. What's going on?
- 2:25What do you want to talk about? Well, we got to talk about the
- 2:28Mets. I mean, the Mets have looked
- 2:29like a, a complete, I don't know.
- 2:32It's, it's been like a drama story.
- 2:34I, I don't know what you want to call the New York Mets.
- 2:37I wrote a story about David Stearns there.
- 2:39There was some kind of love fetish for the New York Mets
- 2:41when they brought this guy in. And I mean, he's been spinning
- 2:44the wheel making the deal. I, I think I, I, I don't know if
- 2:48he's throwing quarters out and trying to bring pennies in.
- 2:51I, I don't understand this man. So my first question to you is
- 2:56David Stearns, when the Mets brought him in here, did they
- 2:59really think that this guy was going to be a game changer?
- 3:02Because the only thing he's changed is an orphan, an
- 3:06offseason where they've lost their their face of their
- 3:09organization, their best relief pitcher and an organization
- 3:14that's trying to find another bat in a lineup that they're in
- 3:1730 year old players because they're trading off their star
- 3:20outfielders. It doesn't make any sense.
- 3:22What do you think is going on with the New York Mets?
- 3:26You. You.
- 3:26Want me to answer all that? Stuff, All of it.
- 3:29All of it stuff. All in one, right?
- 3:31Yes, You know, New York is New York City.
- 3:34So nice. They named it twice.
- 3:36All that good stuff. And it's a big, it's a big
- 3:38world. And I think what you're seeing
- 3:41there is that David is creating a team that he can call his
- 3:47team, or he could call indoors team, or he can talk call Soto's
- 3:51team or he could call Steve's team.
- 3:54But it's not the team that he took over and most of the guys
- 3:58that were there. And I'm a big Met fan, for
- 4:01whatever it's worth. You know, I, I played for him
- 4:04for a while and he wasn't very good.
- 4:05I was a really good coach for him at third base.
- 4:08I was a pretty mediocre manager. But I've been a really good fan
- 4:12of the New York Mets for a whole long time.
- 4:14And what I see going on now is just the the changing of the
- 4:19guard. You know, David's a new guy and,
- 4:22and Lindor's the new guy, and so does the new guy.
- 4:25And the guys who were homegrown and who were there before them
- 4:30aren't going to be there anymore.
- 4:32And I think that's as simple as it is.
- 4:33And let's see what happens with the new culture and the new
- 4:36group. So, you know, I want to mention
- 4:38the ownership change too, like you mentioned Steve Cohen,
- 4:40obviously he's going to the other extreme to what we've seen
- 4:42with the Wilpons. I know.
- 4:43I don't know if you've had your individual run insurance with
- 4:45the Wilpons when when you were there with the Mets, They're
- 4:48the. Coupons, not the Wilpons.
- 4:50Yes, I was going to. I was just hint to get that
- 4:52because the Mets, the Mets operated where they were kind of
- 4:54settling for these outfielders for a while and hitters because
- 4:57they couldn't develop them homegrown probably outside of
- 4:59David Wright and Jose Reyes on the other extreme where they
- 5:01have the hitting now and it seems like they can't find
- 5:03pitching ever. So what are your thoughts to the
- 5:05changes with the ownership we've seen?
- 5:07Well, I think that Steve and Alex Cohen are spectacular.
- 5:11They're spectacular for the organization, for the city and
- 5:15for the game of baseball. I wish other organizations could
- 5:19follow their lead. And, you know, they're they,
- 5:23they put it in the the hands of their GM Steve has to meddle
- 5:28very much. You know, I think their heart is
- 5:31there every day and I think their pocketbook is there every
- 5:34day. And now David just has to spend
- 5:38it properly and get a group in that clubhouse that work
- 5:41together, play together and hopefully at the end of the year
- 5:45celebrate together. Bobby, this is this is awesome
- 5:49that as a baseball fan was always a fan of you because I
- 5:53just love the way you manage and the way you did things.
- 5:57Dude, I don't know how I didn't get you.
- 5:59You know, I think you're almost available one time.
- 6:02And I went to the office and I said yeah, and he could close
- 6:06and he could be our guy. And and then it never happened.
- 6:09All my wishes. That was the coupons though, so.
- 6:13Good to be with you. Yeah, they're.
- 6:15Different. They're different.
- 6:17I wanted to ask you a question. Yeah, where we we're seeing
- 6:21obviously how the Japanese guys are coming into the game and
- 6:25changing it. And I think your perspective of
- 6:28managing and playing from both sides of the fence, I think is
- 6:33really interesting and, and how the game translates from both
- 6:37sides of it, seeing it and how those guys that come over, you
- 6:44know, have have kind of changed a little bit of a dynamic of the
- 6:48game that was here already. And from your eyes, what, what
- 6:53did you see about that game over there managing compared to what
- 6:58it was here? Yeah, well, that's, you know,
- 7:01that's a long story, but let me just say this, that, you know,
- 7:08the one guy I really went to bat for when I was managing, I said,
- 7:13you know, Jabba was one and and Alex was another actually.
- 7:16And each Euro was the 3rd. And I really was out there for
- 7:19each row. And sometimes I try to think
- 7:21about how different things could be if he was the right fielder
- 7:24that I got to manage. But you know when, and many
- 7:28people know how tough it is to acclimate to different work
- 7:33environments. And when your work environment
- 7:36not only changes your uniform, but changes, you know, your
- 7:40country, your yank, your language, your, your
- 7:43preparation, your bed that you're sleeping in, the food
- 7:47that you're eating. It's it's a tough adjustment.
- 7:50But I think enough of Japanese players have been in the MLB and
- 7:55going back with their horror stories or their or their
- 7:58nighttime stories that that people could dream about.
- 8:03And I think it's a little easier acclamation.
- 8:07And as far as the pitching is concerned, what I, what I've
- 8:10seen there and what I have now seen here, that did not
- 8:15translate for a while when pitchers would come over, you
- 8:19know, Tanaka was good and Matsuzaka was good, but a lot of
- 8:22other guys came over. And Nomo, of course, was good,
- 8:25but a lot of other guys came over and they couldn't quite cut
- 8:28the mustard, mainly because they had to throw fastballs and
- 8:33fastball counts. And MLB and catchers and their
- 8:37coaches and their manager demanded, hey, listen, if he
- 8:40gets three and one and two and O, you've got to throw your
- 8:43fastball. And that was against the
- 8:45Japanese mentality of pitching. You know, they had other pitches
- 8:49they could throw when they were behind in the count.
- 8:52And that's what made him successful.
- 8:53And finally, MLB is now adapted that way of pitching.
- 8:59No one throws a fastball, as you guys know and job, you know for
- 9:04sure and two and O and three and one is anything but a fastball
- 9:08count. There's no fastball counts out
- 9:10there unless it's maybe one and two.
- 9:12And that was always a fastball count in Japan.
- 9:15So, you know, I, I think the work ethic, the, the attention
- 9:20to detail, the desire to be as good as you could possibly be,
- 9:26that it is part of all work environments, but it's really
- 9:31part of a main part of the work environment in Japan is helping
- 9:36those these guys translate better each time they come over.
- 9:40You touched on the pitching. Do you think those guys
- 9:42adjustments too? Obviously what you touched on,
- 9:46but do you think the seven day now moving to five days is, is
- 9:51that big of a difference for those guys in that adjustment?
- 9:53Yeah, I think for starting pitchers, it's a it's a big
- 9:56adjustment because of the practice that they don't get.
- 10:01That practice is just, it's part of that baseball culture there.
- 10:06You have to practice and when you don't do well, then you have
- 10:09to practice more and to get to throw 2 and sometimes three
- 10:14times in between starts and change that to throwing one time
- 10:19in between starts. And you know how we try to say
- 10:23that the less is more where, you know, the Japanese mentality is
- 10:28more is more. You know, those bullpen sessions
- 10:31become either either either something that they adjust to or
- 10:37something they struggle with. We are talking to 10 year MLB
- 10:41shortstop, 16 year MLB manager, and the founder of the Bobby
- 10:45Valentine Sports Academy, the one and only Bobby Valentine.
- 10:49Now Bobby. 2000 was a wonderful year for Met fans and Yankee
- 10:55fans. A Subway Series happened.
- 10:58Mike Piazza was one of the great Mets that we can remember.
- 11:03El Duque. I I know you remember El Duque,
- 11:05who is one of the best playoff pitchers of all time.
- 11:08What stood out to you in that Subway Series out of all the
- 11:12things? I mean, we've heard all the
- 11:13stories. I've interviewed a lot of guys
- 11:15that have been a part of that Subway Series, but I never got a
- 11:18chance to speak to you in that particular series.
- 11:21What stood out on why the Yankees just were a little bit
- 11:25better than you guys? Well, I, I don't know, I guess
- 11:28the Todd Zeal ball off the top of the wall, the Derek Jeter
- 11:32first pitch home run in Game 4. You know, the David Cohen at bat
- 11:37against Mike Piazza with the bases loaded when, when Denny
- 11:41Nagle was taken out in four and 2/3 of an inning, which was kind
- 11:45of unheard of in those days. You always left the guy out for
- 11:49five, you know, the they kind of stand out.
- 11:53They they were all game in series changing moments, you
- 11:59know, and, and to add to the circus environment that we were
- 12:03in, you know, you had the the bat throwing fiasco and the
- 12:08almost come back unheard of come back in the same game against
- 12:13Mariano. You know, it was a really
- 12:16exciting series that that hinged on a couple 3 plays that are
- 12:24very memorable. And, you know, without a doubt
- 12:27the best team won. We were hoping that the team
- 12:29that played the best would win. And we were trying our damn
- 12:32damnedest to to play the best. But, you know, when you look
- 12:36back at it 25 years later and you look at the the Hall of
- 12:40Farmers that were on one team and the Hall of Famer that was
- 12:43on another, and yeah, yeah. You understand that we had to be
- 12:49we had to be just about perfect in order to to get four games
- 12:54out of the seven. And, you know, you're you're
- 12:56showing Rodger there who, you know, I mean, that that was one
- 13:01of the craziest experiences I ever experienced, that's for
- 13:05sure. There's no one knew what was
- 13:06going on other than, you know, Rodger was amped up.
- 13:10There's no doubt about that. And, you know, the look in his
- 13:14eye kept people away from hitting him with a bat.
- 13:18But you know, after he threw that through that, we were kind
- 13:21of paralyzed for a while. We didn't know if he was going
- 13:23to throw at people's head every every time someone got up there
- 13:27and the at bat showed it. And as soon as he got out of the
- 13:30game, that bat bats came alive. And, and like I said, we we
- 13:34almost came back against Mariano.
- 13:37And if we did, oh, what a series that would have been.
- 13:40All right, so Armando, Armando Benitez is a guy that a lot of
- 13:44people didn't like in the league.
- 13:45He's jumped from one team to another.
- 13:48A lot of people just thought he was a choke artist.
- 13:51What type of player was Benitez as a as a player for you?
- 13:56He was the big hearted, wonderful person and a wonderful
- 14:00pitcher. You know, I mean, he had 40
- 14:02something saves in a row. When you talk about little
- 14:05things that happen that change trajectories of careers, you
- 14:10know he was pitching when Derek Jeter hit the home run.
- 14:15That should have been the last out of the game when Baltimore
- 14:19was playing the Yankees in the 96 playoffs.
- 14:23Imagine if Derek Jeter makes the last out of that game and
- 14:26Benitez gets the same. Had Jeffrey Mayer not lean over
- 14:30the wall and interfered with the catch by Tony Tarasco, you know
- 14:34how those careers might have been different in that idea of a
- 14:39choke artist was something that, you know, was hard for him to
- 14:43shake even with, as they said, you know, a fireman of the year
- 14:47award and 40 something saves in a row and bases loaded jams that
- 14:52he get get out of with three strikeouts in a row.
- 14:56But you know, in the World Series he pitched great and the
- 14:59the one game that you know, we we gave up three leads in.
- 15:04He happened to have that at bat against Paul O'Neill and then
- 15:09gave, gave a couple, you know, weak singles up that allowed the
- 15:14Yankees to to go ahead. But he was anything but a choke
- 15:17artist. He was a spectacular pitcher
- 15:22about 99% of the time that he was out on the mound and not
- 15:25many guys could say that. To go to the infamous fake
- 15:30comeback game where you got ejected and then you cut in as
- 15:32the with the mustache out of the glasses at all.
- 15:34Yeah. All right.
- 15:35Whose idea was that? Was it was something you came up
- 15:38with on your own? Was it a player idea?
- 15:40Was it a was it a back end guy? Like I want to know the origin
- 15:42story behind all that. The the back story is too, too
- 15:47long to to get into, but you know, it was a stressful time.
- 15:51We we were in first place, then we were in second, then we lost
- 15:54seven in a row and we're playing at Yankee Stadium on Sunday
- 15:58night. My coaches got fired and, you
- 16:01know, I I made a proclamation that in the next 55 games, if we
- 16:08didn't go 40 and 15 and turn the entire season around, that I
- 16:13would quit. Think about that for a second in
- 16:15New York at Yagi Stadium before Sunday night baseball game.
- 16:20Every TV camera, every microphone in your face.
- 16:23And when I'm asked what am I going to do in the next 55 games
- 16:26to turn the team around, I say we're going to go 40 and 15.
- 16:31Yeah, folks. And you could look this up on
- 16:33whatever search engine you're you're searching on.
- 16:37I made that proc and when I asked if we don't go 1415, what
- 16:41happens? I said I quit.
- 16:43How about that? I said I quit.
- 16:46And as it turned out, here it is, Patrick Mahomes throwing a
- 16:51pitch out to Mike Piazza that they call Mike Piazza for a
- 16:56catcher's block and catcher's interference.
- 17:00Think about that. There were two calls to that
- 17:02play. 1 The umpire said the hitter couldn't swing at the
- 17:05pitch, so they gave catcher's interference and let the hitter
- 17:09go to 1st and then he called the catcher's block that Mike
- 17:12stepped out-of-the-box too soon and therefore the runner was
- 17:16allowed to go to second base on a catcher's block.
- 17:19And as I was telling Frank Pulley that I couldn't believe
- 17:23he made this call, and then he said, well, Bobby, I made it.
- 17:27And then I asked him if I could get thrown out for what I was
- 17:30thinking, and he said no. I told him what I was thinking
- 17:33and he threw me out. Well, that's what led to the
- 17:36mustache, right? And they went up into the into
- 17:39the clubhouse. I had coaches.
- 17:42That's Oral Hershiser there. That's Pat Mahomes walking in
- 17:45front with the black jacket on. He had already come out of the
- 17:49out of the game. Oral was supposed to keep
- 17:52everybody from seeing me. What he didn't realize is the
- 17:55third base camera up in the second deck had a pretty good
- 17:59shot over his shoulder and it could see me.
- 18:02So an inning later when we won the game and I came out onto the
- 18:06out onto the field and slapped everyone 5 Some of the reporters
- 18:11saw it and decided it was the worst thing they ever saw in the
- 18:15history of the game and demanded that I get thrown out of the
- 18:18game of baseball. Instead, Leonard Coleman, the
- 18:21president of the league, fined me 3 days suspension and
- 18:24$10,000. And because he was playing golf
- 18:27with my high school teammate in Florida the day before, he came
- 18:33up and gave me a, a little lenient, more lenient
- 18:37settlement. And that was 2 day suspension
- 18:40and a $5000 fine. So where did the mustache came
- 18:44up with the guy said go back out there.
- 18:46You got to go back out to the dugout.
- 18:48I said I can't. They threw me glasses.
- 18:51They threw me a hat. They told me to take off my
- 18:53uniform. They, they, I went into the
- 18:56training room and looked into the mirror.
- 18:58And then I looked down and I saw the old stickums that guys would
- 19:02put underneath their, their eyes, right, the eye stickum.
- 19:06And I took one of them and I put it here underneath my nose.
- 19:09And I took another one and I put it here underneath my nose.
- 19:12And I looked at Oral and Robin Ventura and they said they'll
- 19:16never know. And I believed them and went out
- 19:19into the dugout. Did you?
- 19:21See the magic word though, Bobby?
- 19:23Did you say the magic word? Did you say the magic word when
- 19:25you got tossed? I told him what I was thinking.
- 19:28What do you think I was thinking?
- 19:31Absolutely, I told. I told him it was the worst call
- 19:37that I had ever seen in my life and I was using as many
- 19:40adjectives before those those words as possible.
- 19:45I always love like you had great players that you managed and
- 19:50that's that's a given when we when we watch the game.
- 19:52As fans of the game, who was your most fun player to manage?
- 19:58Wow. Probably the most fun in New
- 20:02York was Benny Agbayani. You know, because he was the
- 20:05spectacular player, but you wouldn't know it by looking at
- 20:09his body. And, you know, he was able to
- 20:12laugh at himself and everybody called him.
- 20:16You know the different names that you would associate with
- 20:19someone who who looked like they were overweight, but he could
- 20:22run, he could hit, he could feel.
- 20:25Got the only game-winning RBI in the series in 2000 was my MVP in
- 20:31Japan when I managed Japan national championship there in
- 20:37the professional leagues. So he, he was always fun.
- 20:40He he could make fun of himself and and he allowed other people
- 20:45to make fun of them all also and that's always somebody good to
- 20:48have on the team. We are talking to 10 year MLB
- 20:51shortstop, 16 year MLB manager and founder of the Bobby
- 20:55Valentine Sports Academy. Bobby Valentine.
- 20:59I like that. It was like, it's it's, it's got
- 21:01an echo ladies and. Gentlemen, somebody wrote that.
- 21:03Yeah, no, I just. Yeah.
- 21:04Well, Speedy wrote it. I just kind of, you know, gave
- 21:07it a little life. Life.
- 21:08You you missed the first part of the show.
- 21:10You said your name wrong the 1st.
- 21:11Time. Oh, I'm sure.
- 21:12I mean, he wasn't. He was reading it and the E was
- 21:15awesome. I was.
- 21:17Valentino, I called you Bobby Valentino, the R&B singer.
- 21:23I also coached in the major leagues, third base for the
- 21:26bets. For 3 1/2 years.
- 21:27I was an athletic director at Sacred Art University, Division
- 21:31One athletic director for seven years.
- 21:33I ran for mayor of my hometown and lost, so all that stuff
- 21:38could be there, too. And I had a 38 year run in a
- 21:41restaurant all. Right.
- 21:43So I've been to your restaurant. I I, I really wanted to get into
- 21:46this story. And that was the Red Sox.
- 21:49And I thought the Red Sox did you dirty.
- 21:53I didn't understand it. I, I, I honestly, if I was, oh,
- 21:58look, we put your faces together.
- 22:00Bobby Valentino and Bobby V right there.
- 22:03We put your face. We kind of like moshed your face
- 22:05together. What a beautiful man you are,
- 22:07Bobby. But it's great.
- 22:11Yeah, Yeah, that's our executive producer, Mr. Aaron Fishman.
- 22:16But Bobby, what happened over there in Boston?
- 22:19I. Didn't had a terrible year.
- 22:21I made a lot of crazy decisions, I guess.
- 22:25And you know, the next year they got rid of 16 of the 25 guys I
- 22:30had and, and had a good team again.
- 22:32But that was just a real weird situation and I I don't think
- 22:37that anything but weird could describe it any better.
- 22:41It's weird. I mean, think about it.
- 22:43If you're a Red Sox fan, you every single Red Sox fan I knew
- 22:48was so excited to have you there.
- 22:50Your, your, your personality loud and, and, and you, you're a
- 22:55great manager. You've done, you've been in the
- 22:57league for such a long time, you've been successful.
- 22:59You've taken teams to World Series and, and, and the Red Sox
- 23:02were looking for that, that, that, that oomph and.
- 23:06No, I no, I'm not really. They're just looking for a
- 23:09change. And the change was so, you know,
- 23:11they got rid of their favorite guy and the guys love Tito up
- 23:14there and he walked out in a, you know, in a Midnight Massacre
- 23:19massacre along with their general manager.
- 23:22They weren't going to have any loyalty to an outsider and I
- 23:25don't blame them. There's no reason for that team
- 23:28to think that they should should have liked me or trusted me.
- 23:32I was a total outsider who actually was forced on the first
- 23:37day that I got hired to say that there was no not going to be any
- 23:41beer in the clubhouse. No one like beer in the
- 23:43clubhouse more than me. And instead of the ownership
- 23:47taking that that heat, they made me take that heat.
- 23:50So, you know, you take beer out of a baseball clubhouse and
- 23:54think you're going to win a popularity contest.
- 23:56That shit's not happening. You got to keep beer away from
- 23:59Jabba because Jabba told his his wife that he's not drinking
- 24:03anymore for the the year of 2026.
- 24:05Am I right Jabba? Am I right?
- 24:08No more, no less. Good job.
- 24:10Well, Jabba. Jabba looks good.
- 24:12I don't know if you've noticed, but Jabba lost a lot of weight.
- 24:16He's he's in better shape than he was as a baseball player.
- 24:19Am I right Job? Yeah, I still, I actually still
- 24:22play kept my son. Him and his buddies are they
- 24:25were watching the Nebraska game and I made 15 lbs of pulled pork
- 24:29and wow, they crushed it and doing all that.
- 24:33But what I what I want to get to like my son's a sophomore in
- 24:36college. I want to touch on why you chose
- 24:39USC over Nebraska. I'm, I'm really intrigued on
- 24:42that, Sir. Oh, that's a long, long time
- 24:46ago, dude. I'll tell you, I, I had offers
- 24:49to, to play football at both, actually.
- 24:51But you know, the pack 8 out there in USC and they had won a
- 24:55lot of national championships in many sports back in the 50s and
- 25:00the 60s. And this is the late 60s I'm
- 25:02talking about. They were going to allow
- 25:05freshmen to play varsity sports. They're going to be the First
- 25:09Division one school to do that. And I was a cocky dude who
- 25:13thought, well, that's where I want to go because I want to
- 25:16play varsity sports as freshman. And a week after I signed that
- 25:21letter of intent to go there, I signed a professional contract
- 25:26as the number one draft for the Dodgers.
- 25:29But Nebraska was, you know, they were one of the great football
- 25:31teams out there at the time. And I went out.
- 25:34I did a little visit there as I can recall.
- 25:43Speaking of the Dodgers, I want to go back to another thing
- 25:45earlier in a career too, You actually, you actually were
- 25:48playing for Tommy Lasorda when Tommy Lasorda I think was
- 25:50managing the Dominican team or something like that, one of
- 25:52those Dominican League teams before he became the Dodgers
- 25:55manager. What was he like as a younger
- 25:57manager and if you collaborated with him since when he was with
- 26:00the Dodgers at the time or even after his career when you were
- 26:03manager? Yeah, actually I managed.
- 26:06I managed against them a couple games, but I played for him in
- 26:10rookie league when he's a rookie league manager.
- 26:12I played for him the Dominican Republic.
- 26:15I played for him in AAAI, was his MVP for three of the four
- 26:19years I paid, played for him and he was the manager of the year.
- 26:22So we struck up quite a relationship.
- 26:26I gave the eulogy to at his son's funeral and I gave eulogy
- 26:30at his funeral. So we became quite a twosome I
- 26:35guess out there and and he was spectacular.
- 26:38Tom Lasorda was the most unique and and talented person that I
- 26:44have ever been around. A great manager, a great guy to
- 26:49have fun with. When he wasn't in uniform, he
- 26:52could open up a White House press conference and I saw him
- 26:55do that and keep everyone mesmerized for 30 minutes.
- 26:59I saw him speak to the cadets at West Point.
- 27:02I saw him speak to the the nuns in in Tennessee, that in a
- 27:09convent and then everywhere he ever spoke, he got a standing
- 27:12ovation and he deserved it. And you know, the to win World
- 27:17Series, in particular that 88 World Series against the Oakland
- 27:21A's where he was the the best manager that I've ever seen
- 27:25against Tony Larussa's great Oakland A's team.
- 27:30He had Mickey Hatcher batting 3rd and that's where Kurt
- 27:33Gibson, Gibson had one at bat and he hit the home run against
- 27:37Eckersley. You guys might remember that if
- 27:39you're, if you're old enough, but he, Tommy was sort of put on
- 27:4218 hit and run plays in that World Series and 15 of them
- 27:47advanced the runner. And that being part of baseball,
- 27:52not only folklore, but history. Why managers today and general
- 27:57managers today and and talking pundits today don't understand
- 28:02the value of a hit and run, I'll never understand.
- 28:06And Tommy was just the best. Now there are a lot of
- 28:12documentaries and one that just came out the a Alex versus a
- 28:17Rod. Have you checked it out?
- 28:19I haven't yet, no. Well, I know you.
- 28:22You've played against Alex, and you know what type of player
- 28:24Alex Rodriguez was. What could you remember?
- 28:28What do you remember about Alex Rodriguez that really stood out
- 28:31to you in his whole career as a player?
- 28:35Well, you know, he was a great player, but what stands out to
- 28:38me personally is the fact that he was a free agent and we
- 28:42should have signed him. And life would have been
- 28:45different in in in Flushing, if in fact we did.
- 28:49And somehow they came up with some cockamamie 1 + 25 because
- 28:55we had this decrepit clubhouse in Stadium.
- 28:59As you probably remember, I love playing at Chase Stadium.
- 29:02I hated dressing there. I hated taking batting practice,
- 29:05the batting cage, because most of the time I was worried about
- 29:08getting bit by one of the rats that were running around.
- 29:11In the stadium. Including in my office office.
- 29:14But you know, one of the things that Alex wanted was a private
- 29:19area where before and after games, he might be able to, you
- 29:23know, deal with his agent and deal with the people who are who
- 29:27are there to see him or, or there to to the give him giving
- 29:31him endorsement. And because he mentioned that
- 29:35they they got on this idea that, oh, he didn't want to dress with
- 29:39the team and he wanted to be separate from the team and got
- 29:42the entire city to think that he was a bad guy.
- 29:46And for my money, Alex wasn't a bad guy.
- 29:48He wasn't Derek Jeter, He wasn't that personality.
- 29:53He wasn't even Johnny Franco at that personality.
- 29:56But he was one hell of a baseball player and would have
- 29:59changed the the destiny of the New York Mets franchise for
- 30:04sure. One more question and I, and I
- 30:07know I don't want to keep you here too long because you've
- 30:10been here giving us such a great interview.
- 30:13I, I look at the game of baseball and all these different
- 30:17rules and you know, the pitching clock and, and the bigger bases
- 30:22and no, no shifting anymore. What do you think baseball needs
- 30:27to do? Maybe with an an additional new
- 30:30rule or a change to make the game a little bit better?
- 30:37Well, I think they should go to an automatic umpire.
- 30:40I think it's ridiculous that we have the technology to call a
- 30:43strike a strike and a ball a ball and we don't do that and
- 30:46that MLB has convinced people to to say this thing.
- 30:51Which one of you would say if I asked you what you thought about
- 30:55having it a robot call strikes or a an umpire, 11 of you 3
- 31:01would say, oh, I like the human element.
- 31:04Well, you know what the human element is.
- 31:06The players who are playing the human element does not need to
- 31:10be the officiator any longer because you have the technology.
- 31:15And if we use that technology to call balls and strikes, I think
- 31:18they should make it so that 51% of the ball, now you could do
- 31:22this because the robot's doing it, but 51% of the ball has to
- 31:27be on the plate for it to be a strike.
- 31:29And if they did that, you know, it'd be a fairer game, there'd
- 31:34be more hitting and it'd be more exciting.
- 31:37That's what I would do. 51% of the ball has to be on the plate
- 31:41for it to be a strike. And let the robots call it.
- 31:45All right, Bobby, I got one with all the boys and my son.
- 31:49And this is from Jackson Moore. He you've been in the game a
- 31:54long time. Who do you think the greatest
- 31:59baseball player to ever play is? Wow.
- 32:03Well, you know, the, the Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter and
- 32:08player that I ever saw. You know, Otani is someone I saw
- 32:14up and up close and personal for three years.
- 32:17I've been a senior advisor to the Angels general manager out
- 32:21here. So I saw his his duty and he's
- 32:25as great as I ever saw. But I would think between Barry
- 32:30and and Otani, I'd have to say to the people I ever saw they
- 32:36they're the two best. Interesting.
- 32:39All right, Johnny, Johnny Errol. That's funny.
- 32:41Yeah, well, he's one of very few because there are other guys
- 32:44that believe Aaron Judge is the great player in the.
- 32:48League Well, you know, I believe Aaron Judge is one of the
- 32:50greatest players. Also, I'm sorry I didn't mention
- 32:53him in New York. I mean, you know, I, I think
- 32:56he's absolutely spectacular and I think he's just one notch
- 33:03below the two that I mentioned. Interesting.
- 33:05And it's a small notch, all right.
- 33:07I just want to finish off with your, with your Academy.
- 33:09How is that ending up founding Obviously your restaurant as
- 33:11well. Anything else you've been
- 33:12involved? I've been to your restaurant
- 33:13when I was a kid, I was probably like 11 or 12 years old.
- 33:15I was with my family went there. It was very cool with all the
- 33:18memorabilia in it. So all that stuff like
- 33:20especially your Academy now, like stuff that you're doing and
- 33:23any like events or promotions that you guys that you guys
- 33:25have. Well, it just got a great group
- 33:28of guys, Stanford, Connecticut, if everyone wants to do
- 33:31baseball, soccer, lacrosse or just training for sports, they
- 33:35have it all there. It's, you know, 60,000 square
- 33:38feet of fun. And you know, we've been there a
- 33:41long time. We're going to be there a long
- 33:42time after. So come in and check it out.
- 33:45I don't need to promote anything else.
- 33:48You know, there's a book out there, Valentine's Way, which is
- 33:50kind of a fun little story that I wrote during COVID and, you
- 33:55know, go get them. That's all I got to say.
- 33:58Look forward to seeing the the Rocky movie where the president
- 34:01of my film company was the executive producer and of I play
- 34:07Rocky. It's going to come out the 50th
- 34:11year anniversary to the day next year of the 50th anniversary of
- 34:18Rocky. And this is about the making of
- 34:20Rocky. It's a pretty spectacular
- 34:23endeavor. And also with all that college
- 34:25sports stuff that you guys talk about, one of the documentaries
- 34:28my film company did was schooled the price of college sport.
- 34:33And it was basically the thing that there was out in front of
- 34:37all the NIL situation and and all the situation that we have
- 34:41going on in college sports right now.
- 34:44And if you want to know about the Dominican Republic, the last
- 34:47thing I'll say, Pelletiero is a wonderful documentary.
- 34:50He did about a 16 year old Dominican kid.
- 34:53And he he wound up being a Major League player, but we follow him
- 34:56around when he was 16. You get a glimpse into the life
- 34:59of the Dominican Republic baseball player.
- 35:02That hasn't changed so much since 2007.
- 35:06I mean 2011 when that film was made.
- 35:09Well, we really. He didn't drop that tidbit.
- 35:12Oh, I want to film something. To my.
- 35:15I had to just drop that out. There, sorry.
- 35:18Dirt off his shoulder. Do now you know, that's one of
- 35:21the things I get excited about. Well, then, you know, you got to
- 35:25you got to reach out to me and Jabba will be, you know, I'll be
- 35:28an extra in the movie. Jabba could be a lead role or
- 35:31I'll be the lead role and Jabba will be my.
- 35:33You know, what do they call that?
- 35:35The. You are the lead role, don't
- 35:38worry about that. Keep the camera going and and
- 35:41save all the good clips it'll make.
- 35:43It'll make a nice little little short documentary someday.
- 35:47Well, we love you, man, and we definitely want to get you on
- 35:49the show again. I know you're a busy man as you
- 35:53were just telling us you're writing books.
- 35:54Jabba's got a book out too, by the way, 62.
- 35:59Yep, I'm in that one. And then I'm writing my own book
- 36:01right now. There you go.
- 36:03So where? Make it happen, dude.
- 36:05Job is throwing those curveballs.
- 36:07Baby pain in the ass. It takes so much time.
- 36:09One life to live, yeah, but take the time to do it and let AI
- 36:13help you with it, yes? Bobby V Yes, AI can help.
- 36:21It'll lend you a helping hand. Anyways, Bobby, we love you.
- 36:25Thanks guys. We'll we'll talk to.
- 36:27You soon. Thank you.
- 36:28OK. Good luck with the football
- 36:29season. Have fun.
- 36:30Stay safe. Happy New Year.
- 36:32Thanks. Bobby V, ladies and gentlemen,
- 36:35who's now a big fan of ours. So there you go.
- 36:38And he knows his baseball. He gave you, I have to, I got to
- 36:42give him a little bit of credit. I, he really kind of like
- 36:46smoothed around the Red Sox situation.
- 36:50I I mean, because he was being nice, because I don't believe
- 36:55that the Red Sox were treating him or treated him right.
- 36:58When, when they decided to part ways with him after a year, I
- 37:01thought it was wrong the way the Red Sox treated him.
- 37:04I thought they threw him out and, and told him to go sit on
- 37:07it. I thought it was wrong.
- 37:08So that's just my opinion. I I got to I got to say that he
- 37:12was very gracious on the whole situation between him and the
- 37:16Red Sox. I I thought it was going to be a
- 37:18backlash and he was going to smack if the candy ass on the S
- 37:23on the on the Red Sox. But that's just my opinion.
- 37:26All right, ladies and gentlemen, save your tears.
- 37:29Mom, what's one thing that you can't talk to me about?
- 37:33My sexual fantasies say your sorry.
- 37:38It is not ideal, but if it's what it is not ideal.
- 37:41But if it's just not ideal. But if it is, what?
- 37:44You can't treble stamp a double stamp.
- 37:45You can't treble stamp a double stamp Lloyd.
- 37:47You can't treble stamp a double. Stamp, Lloyd, you guys, now it's
- 37:53time for save your tears. Welcome everybody to save your
- 38:00tears. No job the last week of the
- 38:03regular season. We have already figured out who
- 38:06our champion is. Again.
- 38:07This is the game where we all get $15.00 of salary cap.
- 38:10We get a certain roster of players that we get to pay from.
- 38:16We'll take a look at this week's in a second.
- 38:18Here it is. We took.
- 38:20These games, the Giants. And Cowboys game?
- 38:24Oh, mistake to do that. We had a couple of guys go on IR
- 38:27right before the game and then our $5 receivers caught one pass
- 38:31each and took a seat. For the entire game.
- 38:34Interesting way the game went here in week 18, but that's week
- 38:3718 for you. That's why they don't do fantasy
- 38:39in week 18. Pulled it out of my shit is
- 38:40crazy. Anyway, let's take a look at the
- 38:44winner of the last week. And it should not surprise you
- 38:46that the winner of the last week is the same winner it's been all
- 38:49season, the one, the only the champion of 2025.
- 38:53Save your tears Speedy PD with a massive I didn't take a shit our
- 38:59write in guy. Who was it again?
- 39:02Is this Nathan's friend? No Java.
- 39:04This is one of our fans, Jeremy. So, Jeremy, you got the silver?
- 39:09Oh, he beat Java. He beat Java.
- 39:11He he actually did pretty well. Again, you know, the thing with
- 39:14Jeremy is he had a receiver that didn't play and when the guys
- 39:19didn't play, I had to give the next closest receiver.
- 39:22My endo. Wasn't anybody.
- 39:24I gave him the next dollar guy down and that was Kroba for the
- 39:28Panthers and he had a touchdown. So.
- 39:30That helped him get that silver and then everyone else kind of
- 39:35not so great. Jabba, you end up getting the
- 39:37bronze. Thumb up my ass in.
- 39:39The final standings for the regular season, Speedy PD is the
- 39:42gold medalist. I need a blow up.
- 39:45Nathan, yes, you. Just lovely, Sam.
- 39:48Gets the silver and Tommy poops with the bronze.
- 39:52We're going to play a playoffs version.
- 39:54Of titties. And we'll talk about what kind
- 39:56of advantages the gold, silver and.
- 39:59Bronze. Medalists have next game on
- 40:03Thursday on Save Your Tears. Dodger.
- 40:09Oh, and so here we go with a compliment chorus.
- 40:12Speedy, the last time of the regular season.
- 40:15It's time for you to get your compliments in last place this
- 40:18week. Snatch Oh well, you come in
- 40:23first place and all the fantasy leagues, so you got to come in
- 40:26last some way or another. Speedy, I know they want me to
- 40:31do at least 50%. So I'll I'll be nice tonight.
- 40:35You know I love you. You're, you're my protege.
- 40:37You're a guy that I've always looked up to and leaned towards
- 40:40over the last 10 years. So I think you're a hard
- 40:44working, dedicated person. You do make mistakes.
- 40:46Everybody makes mistakes, but that's what makes us human.
- 40:50I love you. Keep up the good work.
- 40:52My pinky is bigger than yours, I mean.
- 40:57Your pinky is bigger than mine. That's not.
- 40:59That's very literal. My dog wants your Pussycat.
- 41:01Oh God, you're going. To use that one in a while.
- 41:06Speedy well, I'm next. Congratulations my friend.
- 41:11Once again, just putting on a clinic, working us over like a
- 41:15speed bag, like it was like Mayweather.
- 41:17I got to go back. Casually just scoring points
- 41:21left and right against every opponent in his career.
- 41:24Basically. You're basically Floyd
- 41:27Mayweather Junior of Save Your Tears.
- 41:30Congratulations on your regular speedy's mom.
- 41:33Speedy playoffs are holding another beast.
- 41:35Let's see if you could hold on to the throne.
- 41:37Good. Luck.
- 41:39Do you want to jerk me off? All right, Tommy, next.
- 41:43Yeah. So speedy, man.
- 41:44I mean, like fish set to begin. I mean, none of us are really
- 41:47that surprised. You have been absolutely killing
- 41:49it in this. Game.
- 41:50I hope not. Literally the past couple of
- 41:52weeks and literally the entire season.
- 41:54You are rightfully deserved. That's the. 1st place to
- 41:57champion within our standings so see what the playoffs have in
- 42:02store man. Congratulations, Mr. Speedy.
- 42:07All right, and. Jenny One.
- 42:13Speedy I mean it's it's a given me know we all we all turn to
- 42:17you for certain things, me more so and I appreciate everything
- 42:21you do on the back end and and for me personally.
- 42:25The back end. If I could only be half as good
- 42:30as you at this, I would definitely.
- 42:32Be winning waves. And that as well.
- 42:37But they're awesome to have it and for you to be the dude.
- 42:42Dissectable Inventory. Beneficial.
- 42:49That that's exactly beneficial. All right, that has been save
- 42:57your tears. And if you didn't like the
- 42:59results, you can't cry about it. You got to save your tears.
- 43:08Errol's favorite? Segment.
- 43:11Because I'm always losing. You finished ahead of me in the
- 43:16standings. I came in.
- 43:18I came in last. Even our intern beat us, beat me
- 43:22or tied me. I would say, I think, I think
- 43:24your track record this is still better than sounded out though.
- 43:26That's true. Oh, Speaking of sounding it out,
- 43:29it has been a curious offseason for the Yankees as they have
- 43:34mostly stood pat while rival teams have added additional
- 43:39players and improving their teams.
- 43:42On New Year's Day, the Houston Astros sign Japanese pitcher,
- 43:46the top Japanese pitcher on the market this offseason in my I to
- 43:51a three-year, $54 million contract.
- 43:53Two days later, the Blue Jays added a Japanese third baseman,
- 43:58Akamoto, who has the most home runs in the top Japanese league
- 44:04in 2015 and like many of their players, doesn't strike out
- 44:08much. The Yankees were reported to be
- 44:11in on a my but did not pursue Akamoto after trading for Ryan
- 44:19McMahon last season. The MLB Network's John Heyman
- 44:23reports that the Yankees did give Cody Bellinger a second
- 44:26offer and mention that Bellinger would prefer to stay in New
- 44:31York, but no deal has been reached yet.
- 44:33According to the MLB dot Coms and Friends Show, Brian Hoke,
- 44:38the Yankees are also interested in signing free agent Beau
- 44:42Bichette as their second baseman as rumors continue that the
- 44:46Yanks are shopping second baseman Jazz Jazz up.
- 44:53Thank God, Hulk adds. The Yankees have also expressed
- 44:58interest in trading for Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera
- 45:05and are one of the teams, according to Ken Rosenthal, that
- 45:08are interested in All Star pitcher Freddy Peralta along
- 45:13with the Mets, the Red Sox, the Braves and the Dodgers so far
- 45:16this offseason. And the Yankees have only kept
- 45:19three of their own players. Ahmed Rosario, Ryan Jarborough,
- 45:25I don't even know. I barely watched him play and,
- 45:27and Trent Grissom and signed a few minor league players.
- 45:31I will say this, I, I know a lot of Yankee fans are upset and,
- 45:35and, and, and I, I know the thought of where the Yankees are
- 45:40this offseason. You kind of question what Brian
- 45:42Cashman is doing. I know Jabba can't stand them.
- 45:45As we all know, Jabba can't stand Brian Cashman.
- 45:48He thinks Brian Cashman is a big ass and and honestly what Brian
- 45:51Cashman did to chop a trampoline, he should think that
- 45:53Brian Cashman is an ass. But this is also an organization
- 45:58that sits and they wait. I do believe the Yankees will
- 46:02land Cody Bellinger. I wouldn't be surprised if they
- 46:05bring in Beau Bichette. I said that before the season
- 46:08ended, that Beau Bichette would be a good fit with the Yankees
- 46:11if he can stay healthy. He's got a lot of power.
- 46:13He pulls the ball a lot. I think he would.
- 46:15His swing would fit very well in Yankee Stadium.
- 46:19The fact here is they haven't made any moves and we're going
- 46:23into a new year in 2026 and usually after the holidays,
- 46:26these guys come off the board. Tucker is still on the board.
- 46:30You use Cody Bellinger is still on the board, but Shet is still
- 46:34on the board. You have all these stars that
- 46:35are still there, out there that are not signed and you question
- 46:39what are the Yankees trying to do here?
- 46:41Are they sitting Pat and waiting for the first ball to drop or
- 46:45something? I don't know what the Yankees
- 46:47are thinking, but the fact here is the Yankees are going to have
- 46:52the best pitching staff in baseball next year.
- 46:54Think about it. Garrett Cole will be back in
- 46:56July, maybe early June. The questions are how healthy is
- 47:01he going to be? They got Max Freed.
- 47:04They've got a tremendous amount of talent with their pitching to
- 47:07pitching staff. Schmidt's coming back.
- 47:10I, I mean, they have Warren. I, I mean, this is a good
- 47:13pitching staff and fairly young if you look at the rotation.
- 47:18So to say that the Yankees don't have anything to look forward to
- 47:21next year is crazy. They still have Aaron Judge, the
- 47:24American League MVP. They have talent there.
- 47:28Now at the shortstop position, I don't know what Volpe is going
- 47:32to be moving forward. I still wonder if the Yankees
- 47:37are making the right decision sitting Pat at that shortstop
- 47:40position. Our man Rosario is not the
- 47:42answer. OK, I don't know what any Yankee
- 47:44fan thinks. When you hear our man Rosario
- 47:46signs a $20 million deal. Nobody cares.
- 47:50The fact here is the Yankees are trying to figure out what
- 47:55they're going to do with Jazz jism, OK?
- 47:57And are they going to sign him? Because he's going to want a lot
- 48:00of money next year. You're talking about probably
- 48:03around $200 million and the Yankees, because of his his
- 48:07ability to hit for power. This is a second baseman.
- 48:10I hit over 30 home runs this past year.
- 48:12He was one of the best hitters in the American League at his
- 48:14position and one of the best hitters at his position
- 48:17throughout the league. So we know what type of player
- 48:19he is. He couldn't hit at the Home Run
- 48:21Derby, but he could hit the regular seat.
- 48:24The question here is, are the Yankees, the same Yankees that
- 48:30we can remember with George Steinbrenner?
- 48:31And the answer will be and always will be no.
- 48:35How is not going to go out there and overpay for players?
- 48:38He's just not. He was going to overpay for Juan
- 48:40Soda. There was no question he was
- 48:42willing to give Juan Soto, as far as what we hear, $760
- 48:46million. That was the story, but they
- 48:48lost out on him. He decided to go to the Mets and
- 48:51look, the Mets had a a debacle of a year.
- 48:53They fell off. The last month of the season was
- 48:56probably the worst month we've ever seen a team ever have.
- 49:00So having the best player doesn't mean or bringing in
- 49:03great players doesn't mean championship.
- 49:05You got to bring the right players in.
- 49:08Is Cody Bellinger a good player? Yes.
- 49:10Is he the right player? Well, let's let's be honest.
- 49:13What did he do in the playoffs last year?
- 49:15He didn't do much. And you sit here, you wonder,
- 49:18this has been the problem for the Yankees year in and year
- 49:21out. They don't hit for average in
- 49:23the playoffs. They don't get enough hitting it
- 49:25for average in the playoffs. They traded away.
- 49:28They let Torres go away. They they're they have Giancarlo
- 49:31Stand, who can hit in the playoffs but can't stay healthy
- 49:34in the regular season. They don't have future big time
- 49:39superstars in their farm system. They have one and Spencer Jones,
- 49:42but he's a power hitter. He we know as of right now, he's
- 49:46not going to hit for average. And the Yankees don't have
- 49:49players in their farm system that really stand out that are
- 49:52going to come up and be that superstar player that you could
- 49:55build your team around like Aaron Judge.
- 49:57They thought that was going to be Volpe.
- 50:00So now you're sitting here and you're going into what you have
- 50:05pitchers and catchers, what, in three weeks?
- 50:083-4 weeks, yeah. 3-4 weeks and Cody Bellinger is still on the
- 50:13list of players not signed Kyle Tucker.
- 50:16You got to remember too, a lot of those guys will get there
- 50:19early because this is the WBC year. 100% Here's what I'm going
- 50:22to say. If I was the Yankees right now,
- 50:25knowing that everybody is counting them out, I would make
- 50:28a bid for all three of those guys.
- 50:31I would make a bid for Kyle Tucker, Cody Ballinger and Beau
- 50:35Bichette. What do you What do you have to
- 50:38lose? Honestly.
- 50:39Rosenthal reported, though, that they don't see Beau Bichette as
- 50:43a shortstop. I know he's not going to play
- 50:45shortstop again. Probably so then he's already
- 50:48said he he would move to 2nd, but then then they have to move
- 50:52somebody, right? Yeah, or they have to try to
- 50:54convert him to 3rd, which he's never played in his career and
- 50:56really doesn't have the arm strength for it.
- 50:59Like he's Yeah, he was. He was a good defensive
- 51:00shortstop early in his career, but lost of some range since
- 51:03that injury. But arm strength was never his
- 51:05big thing, so I don't even know if he could convert to third.
- 51:08So they're going to convert Chesen back to 3rd.
- 51:10Would you put him in the outfield?
- 51:12I don't know. The Yankees have enough
- 51:13outfielders already. Like I don't think it's worth it
- 51:16at this point to just try that unless.
- 51:17You're going to well, they they sign Trent Grissom.
- 51:20He had a good season. I don't think he's going to
- 51:21have. Another season, he's another
- 51:23weird split. Guy, but he's not an everyday
- 51:25player, so you can have him off the bench.
- 51:28If if, let's say Aaron Judge needs to sit here and there.
- 51:31John Caller, Stanton is only going to be there for one more
- 51:33year and then the Yankees are probably going to pay him out
- 51:36and let him go. I mean, the Yankees are
- 51:38positioned if, if they want to bring in two of the three guys
- 51:40or even all three of the guys, they're going to have the money
- 51:43to invest into those guys. I would make a bid for all three
- 51:46of these guys. Why not?
- 51:48Nobody's expecting it. And this is very Yankee like.
- 51:52You're waiting, you're waiting to the last minute.
- 51:55I don't know if the Kyle Tucker's going to get the money
- 51:57that he's expecting. He wants $400 million.
- 52:00I don't think he's getting that Cody.
- 52:01Bellinger wants. I think with Bellinger they
- 52:03offered another one. But from what I hear from all my
- 52:06guys is it's the years that are holding it back.
- 52:09Yeah, because he's another one that his analytics splits last
- 52:13year, it was good before the Yankees, like the Yankees traded
- 52:15for him. They saw that even though his,
- 52:16like, raw numbers weren't amazing, like, he could have
- 52:19been even better with the analytics splits.
- 52:20But there were other years that was the opposite direction.
- 52:22And that's why he's been a notoriously streaky player
- 52:24throughout his career. And since he won his MVP with
- 52:27the Dodgers in 2018, which I think Christian Yelich Shilson
- 52:30won that year, that his splits have been very inconsistent year
- 52:34to year. And that's why I think you can't
- 52:35trust that kind of thing for A5. What?
- 52:37Is this love fetish for the Blue Jays?
- 52:39I, I honestly don't understand it.
- 52:41They had one good season and one good run and everybody's like,
- 52:44oh, the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays.
- 52:46I remember before the season started, nobody had the Blue
- 52:49Jays making the playoffs. Nobody.
- 52:51Me, Jabba, Nick, Goody, nobody. They make a run and now all of a
- 52:56sudden in the blue, watch out for the Blue Jays.
- 52:58Watch out. Come on.
- 53:00But what I think why I think that there is because they're,
- 53:03they're actually doing something right now.
- 53:05So I think like realistically, when you look at it, if if
- 53:09you're not making changes and I had this conversation on Twitter
- 53:14today with, with a bunch of fans and it's like they're just going
- 53:18to sleep, sleep and then sign somebody.
- 53:20And then cash is going to come on and say they tried, they did
- 53:24whatever. But I think why the fetish is
- 53:26because they did get to where they're at and they've actually
- 53:29made some moves that have made them better and spent some
- 53:32money. Maybe did they overpay for
- 53:34cease? But they they're, they're doing
- 53:37it right. And I think that's why it, it
- 53:40comes to the forefront because they're staying relative.
- 53:43And what they do and a lot of the fans that I've talked to is,
- 53:47is their consensus is like now they're just happy.
- 53:51The Yankees are just happy with getting to the playoffs.
- 53:54And I I think it's it's making people shy away from and not
- 53:59talk about it so much because it's becoming a pattern of what
- 54:02they're doing right. And then they'll sign maybe
- 54:04somebody here and there where it's not a splash like when we
- 54:09did it in O nine. Yeah, we obviously got CC after
- 54:11he did what he did in Cleveland. And for him to do what he did in
- 54:15that year to have the most complete games in the American
- 54:17League and the National League, it is unbelievable.
- 54:20So they they got him for what it was.
- 54:23Then we got AJ for a little cheaper.
- 54:26And then we we didn't even know, like Tex was like a surprise
- 54:30Super Sox. Yeah, Like we didn't know that.
- 54:32Yeah. Another, they stole Tex from the
- 54:35the Red Sox, because I, I remember that the Red Sox were
- 54:39making a bid for him and the Yankees snuck right under the
- 54:42Red Sox again and stole Teixeira because he didn't want to play
- 54:45for the Red Sox. He wanted to play for the
- 54:47Yankees. If there was any team out of the
- 54:49two teams he wanted to play for the.
- 54:50Yankees side like somebody like Casey Kotchmidt or?
- 54:52Something. Said it.
- 54:54Was I remember. Jabba, I want to go back to what
- 54:58you were saying with the Blue Jays, though.
- 54:59Like you look at a team, teams that get as far as they do
- 55:02either in surprise circumstances or like circumstances that you
- 55:06would say maybe this was a core that was not going to get on a
- 55:09run like that. And we were discussing it a few
- 55:11weeks ago with the Mets. Like they did the opposite of
- 55:13what they should have done in 2024 when they had a surprise
- 55:16and they they went too much of that same philosophy.
- 55:18One of your contacts with these pitchers and they stayed passive
- 55:21at that point. But outside of Soda, the Blue
- 55:22Jays are doing the exact opposite.
- 55:23They realize, OK, maybe some of these veteran guys they're
- 55:26probably still stuck with under contract that maybe don't look
- 55:29like good contracts with their pitchers are going to fall off.
- 55:31So sees as another high upside strikeout type guy, even though
- 55:34he allows a lot of home runs that can make that kind of thing
- 55:36work. It's same kind of thing with
- 55:37their hitting. They know sometimes that their
- 55:39lineup was top heavy, so they decided to fill it out with a
- 55:42high upside Japanese hitter and again, potentially some other
- 55:45contributions with those young guys.
- 55:47Why? Why is it always like he can't
- 55:49figure out how many lefties to have in the lineup?
- 55:52Like a few years ago he had no lefties in the lineup.
- 55:54Not a single one. And now he's Cashman is
- 55:57complaining. There's too many, we're too
- 55:59lefty dependent. And it's just like, can't you
- 56:02just figure it out? Like you swung from one extreme
- 56:06to the other? Obviously the answer is
- 56:08somewhere in the middle and you want the lefty protection
- 56:11protection for judge. Like that should just be common
- 56:13sense. So you got to have that guy.
- 56:16How about a guy? I mean, or just get the best guy
- 56:19available. I think Kyle Tucker's 100% the
- 56:22best guy available. Errol, he's so good.
- 56:25Listen, he had an injury last year.
- 56:28No, John, you're 100% right. And Errol, you brought it up and
- 56:32like go for all three of them. I don't, I don't think that's
- 56:36the mindset right now with kind of what they're doing.
- 56:39But fish, you hit the nail on the head.
- 56:41It's like, if that's what you say or and figure it out, like
- 56:45why don't you go after the best available player and he's
- 56:49left-handed, he can protect and then maybe figure the years out
- 56:54with Bellinger. Is he is he going to take a
- 56:56lesser deal? Probably not because Scott's
- 56:59obviously representing him and he's going to wait.
- 57:01And I honestly think that's kind of why he's waiting to see what
- 57:05the Tucker market brings for Bellinger, because he does that
- 57:09from like, and he'll, he'll make people wait.
- 57:12And it's, I mean, and he is great at what he does.
- 57:15It's obviously I, I remember my first meeting with him and my
- 57:19dad, God rest his soul, kicked Boris out of the meeting.
- 57:23He. Was.
- 57:24Like this is too long. Like you're just giving us
- 57:27numbers that aren't relative to any like you're just trying to.
- 57:31I was the they were going to be advisor at the time because I
- 57:33was still in college and my dad's like this doesn't mean
- 57:37anything. My son might never get there,
- 57:39like all these cool things. And what the Strada broke the
- 57:42camel's back was he's like, what's the first car you want?
- 57:45And I was like, oh, an Escalade. And he's like, yeah, we got
- 57:47deals for that. And I'm just like, my dad was
- 57:49like, all right, it's been 4 hours.
- 57:52We're good. And it's funny because
- 57:57obviously, like I'm sitting there and it's, it's Scott.
- 57:59Boris. I'll never forget when dad
- 58:01called me. This is when they left messages
- 58:06on your answering machine back then.
- 58:09And he's like, you'll never guess who called and left a
- 58:11message. And I was like, too.
- 58:12And he said Scott board and I'd literally like my mouth dropped
- 58:15because I was like, that was the epitome of baseball.
- 58:17If if they looked at you like you were you were that dude.
- 58:21And so I I think that's kind of part of of what's playing into
- 58:25this factor. But you're 100 go if you're
- 58:29going to make a decision. And like Speedy said, like why
- 58:32the Blue Jays are doing what they're because maybe they did
- 58:35overpaid, but they're doing something like go get the best
- 58:38player. Like you haven't won in 15
- 58:42years? I think they know they played
- 58:43over their heads to the Blue Jays.
- 58:45Right. So they're trying to build
- 58:46patches that that they have. But the Blue Jays always spent,
- 58:49they're always throwing money into bringing these players.
- 58:52In literally one of the richest owners.
- 58:54Oh yes, the Rogers. Family dude they went after.
- 58:57Throwing stuff at the wall, hoping it sticks.
- 58:59That's what they do in Toronto. They've done it for years, you
- 59:01know, and sometimes it works out better than it does.
- 59:03Remember Jose Batista? They just picked them up off the
- 59:06scrap heap. And he was like a journey with
- 59:08like three other players. Iris, They waved him.
- 59:10He got waved by the freaking Pirates.
- 59:13You know what I mean? Like, and that's that's a
- 59:14typical Toronto type of thing. Listen to Tucker.
- 59:17I got to Tuck because I had him on my dynasty league and I can't
- 59:20keep him because I had to pay too much for him.
- 59:21But I would try to get him because I think you're getting
- 59:24him on a deal. He played through an injury
- 59:26similar to the Baker Mayfield thing where he played through
- 59:29the bad shoulder in football and then he couldn't find the team
- 59:31for a couple of years. I think his obviously someone's
- 59:34taking Tucker, but I think his value might be a little lower
- 59:37than if he had a full season playing at the clip he was when
- 59:40he started. Listen, I got his stats before
- 59:42the end of May, 291-390-5537 good for 931 OPS.
- 59:48He stole 20 bases in the 1st 83 games.
- 59:51You project that out to a full season.
- 59:54That's a guy you want on your team and every single time you
- 59:57want him hitting right behind Aaron Judge and you want them
- 1:00:01just make put in the fear of God into the rest of the league
- 1:00:05because now there's nothing you can do.
- 1:00:07Or maybe you put him in front of Judge and you, I mean, I
- 1:00:11probably put him behind because maybe he can get on base, drive
- 1:00:13Judge and then he could run a little bit and let the next guy
- 1:00:16drive him in. So I, I just think it's a no
- 1:00:19brainer. I remember him killing us with
- 1:00:21the Astros. So I'm I'm old enough to
- 1:00:24remember that I would take the guy that killed.
- 1:00:26I will say this, if the Yankees are an organization that is
- 1:00:30going to go out there and show that they're the Yankees you're
- 1:00:34bringing, you're bringing in two of the three guys or all three
- 1:00:37of these guys. You have the money there.
- 1:00:40There's definitely going to be money shed off in the next year
- 1:00:43or two. John, if we.
- 1:00:44Get 2 of the. If we get 2 of the three, yes,
- 1:00:48that's a win. 100% I think, I think that if I was Brian
- 1:00:52Cashman right now, I'm waiting a little bit longer and I'm
- 1:00:56jumping on Kyle Tucker and I'm jumping on Cody Bellinger.
- 1:01:00I think if you get both of those guys, you put Cody Bellinger at
- 1:01:03first base, now you have your your bona fide first baseman and
- 1:01:06then you have Kyle Tucker playing left field.
- 1:01:08If you have Spencer Jones, you want to move Spencer Jones or
- 1:01:11you want to trade Dominguez and move Spencer Jones eventually to
- 1:01:14right field and have Aaron Judges your everyday DH.
- 1:01:17That's what you do in the future.
- 1:01:19But right now I think you're going after two of those guys
- 1:01:23and, and if you want, you want to bring back jazz jism or
- 1:01:26whatever the hell you want to, you want to do with that guy
- 1:01:28thing you do that. I don't know, you could wait a
- 1:01:31year. You don't have to move him right
- 1:01:32now. You could decide.
- 1:01:34Keep him for what his value is now because I I know you hate
- 1:01:37him which is fine. I don't hate him, I just don't
- 1:01:40like him. I don't hate him.
- 1:01:42Is abandoned. It's a bad term for me, baby.
- 1:01:44It's a bad. Yeah, he hasn't reached the bar.
- 1:01:46Dislike him? Sorry, I apologize.
- 1:01:49Baseball's a game in numbers, right?
- 1:01:50We talk about it all the time, and he put up numbers and he has
- 1:01:58the demeanor of what that clubhouse needs.
- 1:02:03Because you have to have a little bit of that.
- 1:02:05Because you have Aaron Judge, you have Aaron Judge, you don't
- 1:02:08have to worry about the leader of the clubhouse.
- 1:02:10You don't have to worry about the leader of the clubhouse
- 1:02:12that's taken care of. You know how that's going to
- 1:02:14happen. And Aaron does a great job of
- 1:02:17like letting those guys. And then it's it's kind of like
- 1:02:21Derek. Derek would call you out when he
- 1:02:24needed to, but would wait for it to happen to do it behind closed
- 1:02:28doors and make it make sense. And I think that's what he does.
- 1:02:34And allows, like, to know for your team as the captain to be
- 1:02:39successful. Yeah, it's different because he
- 1:02:41grew up in the organization and gets it, but he knows the right
- 1:02:46time to call somebody out grab them or hey Jazz.
- 1:02:50All right we we might need to cool it a little bit or do this,
- 1:02:54but it's exactly what we talked about a minute ago and what
- 1:02:59Speedy said what the with the Blue Jays is like.
- 1:03:02They were top heavy so where did they fill pieces in?
- 1:03:05And you have to fill the pieces in to win yesterday overachieved
- 1:03:10because nobody picked us and do it.
- 1:03:12And so we have to do exactly what Fish said is go get that
- 1:03:18best player because we already have one of the best players on
- 1:03:21the planet. Let's go make him better.
- 1:03:25Because what did Cody Bellinger do?
- 1:03:26He made him better. Stanton makes him better.
- 1:03:30And then you add another one that is a way above average
- 1:03:34outfielder when he's healthy. And then you get a great
- 1:03:38defense, of which I think Cody's defense gets very overlooked,
- 1:03:43that you can put a dude at first that knows the position can play
- 1:03:46it. And then if Judge needs a day
- 1:03:49off, he DHS where you can move, you can move Cody out there,
- 1:03:52right? I was shocked.
- 1:03:53That's what I just transformed his defense.
- 1:03:55Like when the Dodgers first put him in center field that year, I
- 1:03:58was like, where is this really going to work?
- 1:03:59I thought they're OK, they're just doing it to keep his bat in
- 1:04:01there and then they just rotate and he's.
- 1:04:03Actually also got those plus degree of growing up in a
- 1:04:06baseball field like you, you did everything and that's.
- 1:04:09There's something to be said yeah about a kid that can do
- 1:04:12that and that's why I just feel like his defense is very
- 1:04:15overlooked at times. I like it because of what he did
- 1:04:17it at the plate. I.
- 1:04:19Like it, you know, I like the idea of having him as maybe Ben
- 1:04:23Rice. I think it's going to play a lot
- 1:04:25of first base. Maybe I'll touch a catcher.
- 1:04:29Maybe they do that. And then if they can get
- 1:04:31Bellinger, he can platoon the other side, he can platoon a
- 1:04:33little bit. They can rotate guys.
- 1:04:36He can play a bunch of first, he can play a bunch of left field
- 1:04:40right. Field.
- 1:04:41OK, Fish. Fish right now.
- 1:04:42Perfect world right there. OK, you put Ben Rice, you've
- 1:04:45seen flashes of what he can do. But then you have an outfield of
- 1:04:49Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger and Judge.
- 1:04:54Come on now. Come on now.
- 1:04:57And and think about Stanton DH ING.
- 1:04:59Stanton DH ING. You have a young kid in Spencer
- 1:05:02Jones, you can move. Dominguez.
- 1:05:04That's why you get those guys and get rid of Dominguez.
- 1:05:07I think that's the thing that if they're going to make a trade
- 1:05:11this offseason and you assume he's going to do something, I
- 1:05:16just don't know how he could do nothing.
- 1:05:17All he's got in is like, he's minor.
- 1:05:19A lot more than you guys think he's going to do.
- 1:05:22So if he is Dominguez is clearly the piece that's being moved
- 1:05:26because they have enough outfielders and they want to
- 1:05:28sign outfielders. So get that guy while his values
- 1:05:32is high. Don't let like the end Duhar
- 1:05:34thing happen again where the guy's value completely goes to
- 1:05:37the point where you have to cut. Him and this is, this is kind of
- 1:05:40what we talked about too when we were talking about like bringing
- 1:05:42Spectra Jones up or not. I think if I'm looking at it
- 1:05:46from that perspective and you have an opportunity and maybe
- 1:05:49they make the splash and that's exactly what we get.
- 1:05:52But where the teams that are going to make a trade, Dominguez
- 1:05:58is big league ready because he's been on a big league field where
- 1:06:02you have a little bit more value instead of the projectability of
- 1:06:06what Spencer Jones can do. And now you're going to get the
- 1:06:09same thing. And that's why I think if I was
- 1:06:13in the front office, you didn't bring Spencer Jones up because
- 1:06:16that may be where they're thinking and they just haven't
- 1:06:19done it yet, where now it's like, OK, we can make a trade
- 1:06:22because you have a big league ready guy right now, right now.
- 1:06:26And that's a big trade piece compared to, yeah, Spencer Jones
- 1:06:29numbers were great when he got to AAA.
- 1:06:32And then, well, we don't know if he's big league ready because we
- 1:06:35haven't even seen him. But Dominguez has shown clips of
- 1:06:38being able to be productive and. Switch hitter, switch hitter and
- 1:06:43you have a lot you still have. Wells.
- 1:06:45Run. Yeah, you.
- 1:06:47I think you move Rice to catcher.
- 1:06:49He doesn't have to be an everyday catcher, but Rice is to
- 1:06:52me. I think he can do a lot of
- 1:06:54things at the plate that Wells can't.
- 1:06:56Wells is up and down all the time.
- 1:06:59I move Wells. He's a better catcher.
- 1:07:01Yes, but I would move, I would move Wells, I would move Warren,
- 1:07:05I would move Dominguez and try to get back some talent.
- 1:07:08And then you use Rice and then you bring the Yankees always
- 1:07:11have a good catching farm system, always do.
- 1:07:14They always have somebody in that farm system that could
- 1:07:17catch the ball. So I think you bring somebody up
- 1:07:19to help Rice out and that's the way I would go.
- 1:07:22And then you move Cody Bellinger to 1st.
- 1:07:24That's to me. If you want to win a
- 1:07:26championship, you got to make, you got to put eggs in the back.
- 1:07:31I would love to see this. And I've never said like
- 1:07:34anything that nice about National League baseball, like
- 1:07:38the old school without the DH and the pictures bunting all the
- 1:07:42time. But if you're going to do this
- 1:07:44and you're going to get just like a great defensive guy who's
- 1:07:47going to hit like $1.95. I know what you're going to say.
- 1:07:51I know what you're going to say. I want to see the sack bunt in
- 1:07:54the 9 hole getting guys in position and then you can lead
- 1:07:58judge off and then you can do what you did and get him the 607
- 1:08:02hundred plate appearances. And then you put Kyle Tucker
- 1:08:05behind him in the 2 hole and then you kill everybody all
- 1:08:09throughout the lineup. And then you just have a guy
- 1:08:11that can move a guy over at the sack bun or he's just good at,
- 1:08:14you know, situational baseball because I'd love to see
- 1:08:17situational baseball in New York.
- 1:08:19I don't think we get enough of it currently.
- 1:08:21I think that's something that we're missing.
- 1:08:23I don't want to. I want to stay on here too long
- 1:08:24because we have a lot more segments to get into.
- 1:08:26But I will say this, Aaron Boone is a lot smarter than people
- 1:08:30make him out to be. He's a good manager.
- 1:08:33I think if the Yankees give him the right players and the right
- 1:08:37positional players, I think the Yankees can win a World Series.
- 1:08:40And out of the three guys that we mentioned, if, and I do
- 1:08:43believe it by the way, for all you fans out there that doubt
- 1:08:46Brian Cashman and Al Steinbrenner for what they said,
- 1:08:49trust me, the Yankees are going to make at least two to three
- 1:08:53moves before 3. Weeks Errol you say that though,
- 1:08:57but at the same time we've had people that we talked to and
- 1:09:00that we know that they're not get the the front office not
- 1:09:05going to let Aaron boot like let him coach the game.
- 1:09:09Let let him do you give me the players let me manage.
- 1:09:14That's that is the root word of manager correct yes, so let him
- 1:09:18do it. Don't don't be calling me from
- 1:09:20up there and saying what we need to do like let me watch the
- 1:09:26game. You're he's a baseball mind he's
- 1:09:29a base like we I just said it pedigree.
- 1:09:33He has a feel for the game numbers play a part.
- 1:09:36I understand that, but there has to be a feel for the game.
- 1:09:41You can't go always by that and we've seen it bite people in the
- 1:09:44butt plenty of times. So when you say that, I
- 1:09:48wholeheartedly agree. Or give him the players, but
- 1:09:53then let him manage. I agree with you and I, I think
- 1:09:56obviously if you're a Yankee fan, you're upset.
- 1:09:59You should be upset. But hopefully that the Yankees
- 1:10:03have something up their sleeve and they usually do.
- 1:10:05So I'm going to, I'm going to bet that just because the
- 1:10:09Yankees haven't really done anything yet that Yankee fans
- 1:10:12are like, Oh my God, they're not spending money.
- 1:10:15The Yankees aren't doing anything.
- 1:10:16Trust me, the Yankees are sitting Pat because I believe
- 1:10:22that two of these guys are going to be signed by the Yankees.
- 1:10:25I believe it. I just.
- 1:10:26Got to hope that move doesn't turn into the next.
- 1:10:27Josh Donald, no, you don't want to see that.
- 1:10:29But I I do believe that two of these guys are going to be
- 1:10:32Yankees one way. Or, I know I haven't said this a
- 1:10:34lot, but I hope you're right. Yeah, I hope you're right.
- 1:10:37I. Know.
- 1:10:39Probably one time this. Year you'll say that Java
- 1:10:41rocket. Thank you.
- 1:10:46Fans are going to be shooting me after this take.

- 1:11:52It's been our first show of the year if we're in 2026.
- 1:11:57And like I said, ladies and gentlemen, get ready for the
- 1:12:00ride because we're going to take you on a big one.
- 1:12:02So that's it. We will see you Thursday.
- 1:12:05Speedy, who do we have on? Actually, Nathan has our guest
- 1:12:07for Thursday. So your glasses, Nathan.
- 1:12:10Grow up. Hey, hey, whoa, Doo Doo.
- 1:12:14I First of all, great show today with Bobby Valentine.
- 1:12:17I loved it. He bought a lot of great stuff.
- 1:12:20Yeah. So Thursday books for my good
- 1:12:22friend Timmy Witherspoon. He's a two time heavyweight
- 1:12:25champion boxing legend. He'll be coming on at 8:45 PM
- 1:12:29Eastern. Originally it was John Mensch,
- 1:12:31but he can't make it. So my guy Tim Witherspoon will
- 1:12:34be joining. I want to, I want to tell
- 1:12:35everybody Tim Witherspoon I met when I was a kid.
- 1:12:39I was, I was at the Poconos and I was sitting in a hot tub and
- 1:12:43he was talking and he had a conversation with my father.
- 1:12:46I'll never forget it. And he was like, oh, I was the
- 1:12:48heavyweight champion of the world.
- 1:12:50And I was like, who the hell are you?
- 1:12:51He's like, I'm Tim Witherspoon. I was like, I never heard of
- 1:12:54you. I've heard of Mike Dyson.
- 1:12:56I never heard of you. And he laughed and and we
- 1:12:59actually hung out with his family the whole time when we
- 1:13:02were there. So I'm going to mention I think
- 1:13:04he's going to Remember Me because I was the crazy white
- 1:13:06boy. So that's what he called me.
- 1:13:08It's a true story. Yeah.
- 1:13:12I'll never forget. I got into a fight with my
- 1:13:13father That, that, that time that we went to the Poconos and
- 1:13:17I ran through the woods because trying to get away from my
- 1:13:20family and I went. So the, the, the, if you ever
- 1:13:23been to Poconos, it's all there's a lot of woods.
- 1:13:26I ran through, took a detour and met them on the outside.
- 1:13:30My father didn't know how I got through the woods and got to the
- 1:13:33end of the detour faster than they did.
- 1:13:35So that's a true story. I'll never forget that time And
- 1:13:38I, I did meet Timmy at that time, so I, I don't know if
- 1:13:41he'll remember it, but I, I did. His sons were young.
- 1:13:45It was a pretty funny. It was a good time.
- 1:13:47I love the Poconos. So Tim Witherspoon.
- 1:13:50All right, first time on Jabba in the mouth.
- 1:13:52All right. Anyways, it's been a great one.
- 1:13:56First show of the year, something to remember.
- 1:13:59And ladies and gentlemen, we've got a lot more to go.
- 1:14:03Until then, this is Errol Jabba, Speedy fisherman.
- 1:14:08The old myth and the poop shoot saying good night.
- 1:14:13Oh, and Speedy, good night. We'll talk to you then.
- 1:14:15Good night everybody. It's the worldwide sports radio
- 1:14:19network, Radio network.
