- 0:03Speaker 1: In our territory.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Our Territory Spring Training Tour is engineered by Fastenal. Check
- 0:09Speaker 2: out more at fastenal dot com for more information. Let's
- 0:13Speaker 2: take a look at our Spring Training Tour calendar.
- 0:16Speaker 1: We are a Rangers camp today. We will be with
- 0:19Speaker 1: Pat Murphy and.
- 0:20Speaker 2: The Milwaukee Brewers tomorrow and the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It's been a great day at Rangers camp so far.
- 0:29Speaker 2: You see the guys out on the field. AJ Prazinski
- 0:31Speaker 2: is there and as we know, the Rangers after a
- 0:34Speaker 2: five hundred year missing the playoffs, this is a team
- 0:37Speaker 2: it's kind of searching for its championship identity again. The
- 0:40Speaker 2: pitching staff looking elite. The lineup, they've got some new pieces.
- 0:43Speaker 2: We've got Wit mayorfield with us as well.
- 0:46Speaker 1: AJ. Guys, how you doing.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Well? Yeah?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Uh, the sun is out in surprise, surprise, the sun
- 0:57Speaker 4: came out today. And so if you guys see me
- 1:00Speaker 4: take off my sweatshirt, it will be because I am
- 1:03Speaker 4: in a sauna getting here at surprise. But other than that,
- 1:06Speaker 4: it's a beautiful day. I'm running down a dream in
- 1:10Speaker 4: the background. And USA kicked the ass in the hockey
- 1:13Speaker 4: gold medal games, so in both men's and women's. So
- 1:17Speaker 4: we are now a hockey.
- 1:18Speaker 5: Nation feeling golden, failing gold.
- 1:27Speaker 3: In that right? A, who are the Hoosiers.
- 1:33Speaker 2: We're gonna have a lot more Hoosiers references throughout the show,
- 1:36Speaker 2: so embrace.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yourself, everybody speaking though of Team USA.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Wow, guys, you want to talk about a move George
- 1:46Speaker 2: Springer at Blue Jay's Spring trading wearing a USA hockey
- 1:52Speaker 2: jersey in his first at that.
- 1:55Speaker 1: What'd you guys think about that?
- 1:56Speaker 3: Wait?
- 1:56Speaker 2: I'm so curious your thoughts on this, especially after a
- 2:00Speaker 2: playing in Toronto.
- 2:02Speaker 6: Well, George, I will say George is a huge hockey guy,
- 2:05Speaker 6: huge hockey guy, like Donamo, hockey fan, truly loves the sports.
- 2:09Speaker 6: So I know that he was fully invested in in
- 2:13Speaker 6: the Olympics, in Team USA and their hockey run and
- 2:17Speaker 6: the fact that they won gold.
- 2:18Speaker 5: I know he's super fired up, so this is more
- 2:21Speaker 5: of it.
- 2:21Speaker 6: I know this is more of a him just celebrating
- 2:24Speaker 6: what just happened.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Versus a day at Canada.
- 2:27Speaker 6: But I know he plays for the Canadian team, so
- 2:29Speaker 6: people are gonna view it as that. But this is
- 2:31Speaker 6: just George being a being a super fan and showing
- 2:34Speaker 6: his support for an incredible run that Team USA just
- 2:37Speaker 6: went on.
- 2:39Speaker 4: No troll, This is trolling. He's trolling in that country
- 2:42Speaker 4: and he plays for the only baseball team in the country.
- 2:45Speaker 4: This is amazing. Good job, George. You just got all
- 2:49Speaker 4: of Canada mad at you from your first faked bat
- 2:52Speaker 4: of the spring training season, and I freaking love it.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Uh what you played there?
- 2:56Speaker 4: How are the Canadians gonna react when George Stringer comes
- 3:00Speaker 4: George Springer comes up for his first to bat today,
- 3:03Speaker 4: and you know what he should have done in the
- 3:04Speaker 4: first spring training a bat in Dunedin. Warn that Jersey
- 3:07Speaker 4: and then see how the reaction.
- 3:10Speaker 6: Yeah, that would have been. That would have been something.
- 3:12Speaker 6: But I mean they'll be they'll be fine. They'll be fine.
- 3:17Speaker 6: Good for Team USA, Canay, Canada's got all their goals
- 3:21Speaker 6: and this is our year. So I want a little
- 3:25Speaker 6: bit more of this in baseball.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I want a little bit more of like, Hey, what
- 3:28Speaker 2: can I do to kind of stir the pot?
- 3:30Speaker 1: What can I do to get people talking? I support you, George.
- 3:33Speaker 2: All right, let's talk a little bit about the recent
- 3:37Speaker 2: news in uh charge the mound? All right, Reyes Hoskins
- 3:47Speaker 2: signs a Guardian's minor league deal worth one point five
- 3:50Speaker 2: million if he makes the team. Of course, we know
- 3:54Speaker 2: that Reese is coming from the Brewers. He's had a
- 3:56Speaker 2: couple of injury plug seasons. Could be a little bit
- 4:00Speaker 2: of a middle of the order threat for this Guardian's lineup.
- 4:04Speaker 2: They could look they could use that a bit with AJ.
- 4:07Speaker 2: What are your thoughts on this?
- 4:10Speaker 3: Amazing to take from the sign.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't. I don't get the rece
- 4:17Speaker 5: I don't get the rece thing. What's what I mean?
- 4:20Speaker 6: The guy is the coming off a down year he
- 4:23Speaker 6: got he got two hundred and seventy nine at bats
- 4:28Speaker 6: and he hit twelve homers. If he'd got a full year,
- 4:30Speaker 6: he's gonna hit you twenty five homers. He's just going
- 4:33Speaker 6: to and if he'd got a full year, he would
- 4:34Speaker 6: have hit twenty five homers. Again, I mean, he's gone
- 4:37Speaker 6: eighteen homers his rookie year and one hundred and seventy
- 4:39Speaker 6: at bats, and then he's gone thirty four, twenty nine,
- 4:42Speaker 6: ten in the COVID year, twenty seven, thirty twenty six
- 4:47Speaker 6: after coming off a torn acl and then twelve and
- 4:51Speaker 6: in limited playing time.
- 4:52Speaker 5: So I don't.
- 4:53Speaker 6: I mean, he's never been an average guy. He's not
- 4:54Speaker 6: gonn hit for average, and he's going to play.
- 4:57Speaker 5: A serviceable first base.
- 4:58Speaker 6: Uh, and he's got yea clutch postseason experience. I don't
- 5:02Speaker 6: understand what this, what the why people aren't more inclined
- 5:06Speaker 6: to go after Reese. He's a leader in the clubhouse.
- 5:09Speaker 6: I spent some time in Philly, and people all over
- 5:12Speaker 6: that clubhouse, whether it was players, staff, whoever, was rave
- 5:17Speaker 6: about Reese as a teammate and as a person. So
- 5:20Speaker 6: I'm really confused as to why more teams aren't interested
- 5:23Speaker 6: in Reese.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I don't know that it wasn't they were interested. I
- 5:28Speaker 4: think they were a little bit scared of the injury bug, right,
- 5:30Speaker 4: Remember he hurt his knee and then he missed them
- 5:32Speaker 4: a bunch of time in the last couple of years.
- 5:36Speaker 4: But like you said, if he if he's healthy, he'll
- 5:39Speaker 4: hit you twenty five to thirty any given year. And
- 5:42Speaker 4: now he's gonna strike out a bunch, He's gonna he's
- 5:45Speaker 4: gonna give you some you know, average, the averages first
- 5:50Speaker 4: base play, So maybe teams were looking at that. But
- 5:53Speaker 4: for me, for the Guardians, this is a great signing
- 5:56Speaker 4: because they can add that pop to their lineup. They
- 5:58Speaker 4: can add that leadership to a lineup and they hadn't
- 6:01Speaker 4: done much this offseason, So I think for the Guardians
- 6:03Speaker 4: this is a huge deal and he can help them
- 6:06Speaker 4: try to win another division, which people forget they won
- 6:09Speaker 4: the division last year. We're in the postseason with almost
- 6:11Speaker 4: the same team, so just another bat they can add
- 6:14Speaker 4: to a lineup that we've been seeing for a while
- 6:15Speaker 4: and needs more offense.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Still wild to me that the Guardians won the division
- 6:19Speaker 2: last year and how that all shook out. What do
- 6:21Speaker 2: you think about where he fits in with this team.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I know AJ was talking about how they need that
- 6:26Speaker 2: they need that bat.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And Reese could be a good option for that. I
- 6:30Speaker 1: know you you're a big fan of him.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree with AJ.
- 6:35Speaker 6: I think he fits in perfectly with with with this
- 6:37Speaker 6: team and brings a brings another level of experience and
- 6:42Speaker 6: leadership to a fairly somewhat young team. They're not as young,
- 6:46Speaker 6: I don't feel like as they have been in the past,
- 6:48Speaker 6: but it gives jay Ram a little bit of a
- 6:51Speaker 6: little bit of extra protection and another voice in that clubhouse.
- 6:55Speaker 6: And I just I agree. I think it's a great fit.
- 6:59Speaker 6: I hate that it took so long and that it's
- 7:02Speaker 6: you know, it is what it is with the the
- 7:04Speaker 6: money that these games getting. I think one to five
- 7:07Speaker 6: on a minor league deal, So I don't think it
- 7:10Speaker 6: reflects the kind of player that he is. But good
- 7:12Speaker 6: for the Guardians. I think it will be a great fit.
- 7:14Speaker 6: And they always the Guardians always seem to squeeze out
- 7:17Speaker 6: the best out of the out of their players. So
- 7:19Speaker 6: good for Reeves, good for Cleveland, and I hope it
- 7:21Speaker 6: hopefully goes well.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Okay, obviously we know how this works. But when you're
- 7:25Speaker 2: going to camp on a minor league deal, how different
- 7:27Speaker 2: is that than going to camp on a big league deal.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Uh well, I mean it's it's Uh well, I guarantee
- 7:39Speaker 6: you with Reese, it's sometimes it's different when you're a
- 7:42Speaker 6: younger player or you're kind of a fringe guy.
- 7:45Speaker 5: You're trying to go make the team. You're going to
- 7:47Speaker 5: have it.
- 7:47Speaker 6: You need to go have a good spring and earn
- 7:48Speaker 6: yourself a spot on the team. With Rees, I can
- 7:51Speaker 6: almost guarantee that that Cleveland told them, hey, look, you're
- 7:54Speaker 6: on the team, Like, we got to put you on
- 7:55Speaker 6: a minor league deal right now because we're not ready
- 7:57Speaker 6: to make a forty man move. We don't know what
- 8:00Speaker 6: way we're gonna go with it. We don't know who
- 8:01Speaker 6: we're going to dfa to make their room for you.
- 8:03Speaker 6: So for now you're gonna be on the minor league deal.
- 8:06Speaker 6: But I can almost assure you that they told him, Look,
- 8:08Speaker 6: you're gonna be on You're gonna make the team, But
- 8:11Speaker 6: we just got to do this for now.
- 8:12Speaker 4: So he's got to make the team. He's got to
- 8:17Speaker 4: make the team. They probably didn't have a roster spot
- 8:18Speaker 4: open Trischer, so it's a little bit different. He's not
- 8:20Speaker 4: coming to with guaranteed money. He's got to make the team.
- 8:23Speaker 4: But I have a pretty good feeling and probably make
- 8:26Speaker 4: the team. I don't know why the Guardians would do
- 8:30Speaker 4: this unless he was gonna make the team.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yes, he's on a minor league deal.
- 8:33Speaker 4: But usually somebody gets hurt in spring training, or there's
- 8:36Speaker 4: somebody that didn't perform up that might be had options,
- 8:38Speaker 4: and then they they can just dfam and clear a
- 8:41Speaker 4: spot on the roster.
- 8:42Speaker 3: So I don't know why they would do it unless
- 8:45Speaker 3: he was going to make the team.
- 8:53Speaker 2: All right, that was by far the best part of
- 8:55Speaker 2: the show. Skip Schumacher cheering for Theirs over the U.
- 9:01Speaker 2: We love to hear it all right, so yep, didn't
- 9:05Speaker 2: ask for your comment yet. AJ, good news for the Twins.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Joe Ryan's MRI showed only inflammation. And this is from
- 9:14Speaker 2: our friend Dan Hayes. As we know, that is phenomenal
- 9:18Speaker 2: news for the Twins considering the news that they got
- 9:21Speaker 2: recently on Pablo Lopez having to have Tommy John surgery.
- 9:27Speaker 1: The team said on Saturday that with Joe Ryan it.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Was lower right back kind of soreness, but thankfully for
- 9:36Speaker 2: them guys, not a big issue.
- 9:39Speaker 1: AJ.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I'll start with you, how much of a sigh of
- 9:42Speaker 2: relief for the Twins letting out right now?
- 9:44Speaker 4: Well, they're like, whoo, we just lost Pablo Lopez and
- 9:47Speaker 4: now we can still trade Joe Ryan at some point
- 9:49Speaker 4: after we get off to start and you're probably when
- 9:54Speaker 4: they're not really trying, even though they said they're going
- 9:55Speaker 4: to try and win this year. The biggest thing is
- 9:57Speaker 4: how does this affect it for the WBC. Is gonna
- 10:00Speaker 4: be allowed to pitch in the WBC? I would think no,
- 10:02Speaker 4: right right when if he's hurt, they can't and he
- 10:05Speaker 4: can't pitch, they they're gonna have to replace him on
- 10:08Speaker 4: the WBC roster.
- 10:09Speaker 3: So who's that gonna be.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 10:12Speaker 6: I mean that with this new insurance, uh, people bound
- 10:16Speaker 6: pounded down your throat about being old and being heard.
- 10:20Speaker 6: You got any sort of any sort of ax that
- 10:22Speaker 6: pop up, I guarantee the insurance isn't gonna isn't gonna
- 10:25Speaker 6: let it fly. So I don't know if I don't
- 10:27Speaker 6: think his WBC futures.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Is gonna happen.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I hope not. I hope.
- 10:32Speaker 6: I hope he gets to pitch for Team USA. But
- 10:35Speaker 6: but yeah, I don't see it happening. And who they
- 10:37Speaker 6: replaced with it with him, I'm not sure because potitch
- 10:41Speaker 6: a player wise, it'd be it'd be different. But you know,
- 10:44Speaker 6: Joe knew going in to the spring that he was
- 10:46Speaker 6: gonna be pitching, and so he had he's built up
- 10:49Speaker 6: a little differently than had he just been getting ready
- 10:51Speaker 6: for a regular season. You can't really go find a
- 10:54Speaker 6: pitcher probably that's been that's built up to the level
- 10:57Speaker 6: that he needs to be to go and and be
- 10:59Speaker 6: a starter. So maybe they just piece together some more
- 11:02Speaker 6: bullpen games. I don't know, But yeah, I don't see
- 11:05Speaker 6: his WBC future happening unfortunately.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely a blow for Team USA, for the WBC
- 11:12Speaker 2: with the news of Joe Ryan and his inflammation. Certainly
- 11:15Speaker 2: what the Twins wanted to hear when it comes to
- 11:17Speaker 2: Joe Ryan's injury. But guys, I'm also curious the Twins
- 11:20Speaker 2: had a chance to trade both pitchers at last year's
- 11:24Speaker 2: trade deadline, Pablo Lopez.
- 11:26Speaker 1: And Joe Ryan.
- 11:28Speaker 2: AJ you you kind of touched on it briefly, but
- 11:32Speaker 2: your thoughts on that the decision they made last year
- 11:35Speaker 2: and then how this affects them going into this year
- 11:37Speaker 2: with Pablo's injury and then obviously Joe Ryan on the table.
- 11:44Speaker 3: How does it affel.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I think they're gonna be more aggressive possibly of trading
- 11:48Speaker 4: him if they don't get off to a good start,
- 11:49Speaker 4: because now they you know, there was talks to Pablo
- 11:52Speaker 4: Lopez getting traded, and now with him out for you know,
- 11:54Speaker 4: a year and a half, Let's let's be honest. Everyone says, oh, Tommy,
- 11:57Speaker 4: John is a year, but it's really a year and
- 11:59Speaker 4: a half. So you're looking at Pablo Lopez missing all
- 12:02Speaker 4: of this year and a bunch of next year, so
- 12:04Speaker 4: the Twins can't trade him.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Joe Ryan.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I think they'd be aggressive on once they get an
- 12:10Speaker 4: opportunity and they see where they're at, and if they're
- 12:12Speaker 4: doing good or not doing well, they might trade him
- 12:15Speaker 4: earlier than we've seen and try and get more value
- 12:17Speaker 4: out of them. So I think that's how it affects
- 12:19Speaker 4: him more than anything. But and I don't know, as
- 12:22Speaker 4: a former twin, I hate this for the people of
- 12:26Speaker 4: Minnesota and the fans of Minnesota because it's it could
- 12:29Speaker 4: be a long few years and I lived that as
- 12:32Speaker 4: when I first came up Minnesota and we brought the
- 12:34Speaker 4: fans back and the fans have been great. But now
- 12:36Speaker 4: as they continue to kind of go down, you see
- 12:38Speaker 4: the fans not showing up, and they shouldn't because he
- 12:40Speaker 4: looks like the team to them is not trying. Not
- 12:42Speaker 4: saying that they're not, but it just looks like that
- 12:45Speaker 4: from the outside.
- 12:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree with you, and I think they're gonna
- 12:50Speaker 6: try earlier, and I think there might be it might
- 12:52Speaker 6: be having to sacrifice a little bit of what they
- 12:54Speaker 6: were asking for before now that he's got this on
- 12:57Speaker 6: his on his resume, which you know, I don't I
- 13:00Speaker 6: don't know how serious it is, but it's never you never.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Want to have something pop up when you're trying to
- 13:05Speaker 5: trade for somebody.
- 13:05Speaker 6: But I do I do gotta say with this, with
- 13:09Speaker 6: with the Tomma John, you know thing that everybody seems
- 13:13Speaker 6: to get Tom John after a picture. Can we get
- 13:15Speaker 6: on the Lindsay Vaughan a c L program with Tomma
- 13:18Speaker 6: John Because she tore a c L before she went
- 13:21Speaker 6: down doing the downhill. A week later she was doing
- 13:23Speaker 6: squats and box jumps and and and skiing. So whatever
- 13:27Speaker 6: doctor did her a c L, we need to trade
- 13:28Speaker 6: him to do some Tomma John surgery so we can
- 13:30Speaker 6: get these pictures back a little.
- 13:32Speaker 1: It didn't really work out well for her. Unfortunately, that
- 13:37Speaker 1: wasn't because of her knee though.
- 13:38Speaker 3: That was because she got the It wasn't.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Because of her knee. But yeah, there there can be
- 13:46Speaker 1: arguments made. But yes, uh a hater. I love Lindsay Van.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I'm not being a hater.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I'm just saying there were probably a lot of doctors
- 13:58Speaker 2: that were like, you really should not have been out
- 14:00Speaker 2: there for one reason.
- 14:02Speaker 4: I know the one she found, the one that said
- 14:04Speaker 4: she could do it, and she did it. Her post
- 14:09Speaker 4: afterwards was awesome, by the way, if you haven't read
- 14:11Speaker 4: her post, and it was awesome.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I did read it, and I'm not blaming her for
- 14:15Speaker 2: doing it at all. I would have done it if
- 14:17Speaker 2: I were her, But I think there are definitely some
- 14:20Speaker 2: opinions maybe she should have listened.
- 14:21Speaker 5: To before that.
- 14:23Speaker 2: All right, let's move on from injury talk and let's
- 14:26Speaker 2: talk about a splitter that is kind of lighten up
- 14:29Speaker 2: spring training right now, tedsuya.
- 14:32Speaker 1: E may look at it.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Nailed it, you guys that that name's hard. Don't don't even.
- 14:43Speaker 1: He min there we go, he mine so much right now.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I even practiced his last name going into this. All right,
- 14:53Speaker 1: Here's how his splitter was described.
- 14:55Speaker 2: He said, I'll be honest with you, I played this
- 14:57Speaker 2: game for twenty four years now and eleven professionally, and
- 15:00Speaker 2: I've never seen a pitch like that before.
- 15:03Speaker 1: In my life.
- 15:05Speaker 2: AJ your thoughts on that comment, because that's a strong comment.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Don't you dare say something about pronunciation?
- 15:12Speaker 3: Oh?
- 15:12Speaker 4: Of course, I mean Indiana. Since they're now a football school,
- 15:15Speaker 4: they can't read either, So I mean that that goes
- 15:17Speaker 4: hand in hand for sure. Welcome, welcome to being a
- 15:20Speaker 4: welcoming to being a football school.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Football sound something.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And you will never get the end of it from me.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Can you talk now about splutters.
- 15:27Speaker 4: By Yes, uh, listen, a lot of guys have splits,
- 15:31Speaker 4: and Wind knows this. When they get the deep deep
- 15:34Speaker 4: it's almost like a forkball. Couse they Contraras used to
- 15:37Speaker 4: throw it right, Sazaki throws it. When it is that
- 15:39Speaker 4: deep deep forkball, it's almost like a knuckleball, and you
- 15:42Speaker 4: just don't know which way it's going. If you if
- 15:44Speaker 4: you saw cal Rawley yesterday talk about Logan Gilberts, it's
- 15:48Speaker 4: a split, but he called it a forkball. It just
- 15:50Speaker 4: you don't know which way it's going. And if you
- 15:51Speaker 4: can command that pitch, it is one of the best
- 15:53Speaker 4: pitches in baseball because it comes out hard. It comes
- 15:55Speaker 4: out like a fastball, but it moves like a knuckleball,
- 15:58Speaker 4: and it is really really hard to hit, and it's
- 16:01Speaker 4: really really hard to throw because everyone has a hard
- 16:04Speaker 4: time controlling it. So if you can control it, you
- 16:07Speaker 4: can be really special.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:09Speaker 6: That's the big thing, right is can you thole for
- 16:11Speaker 6: a strike? I know, going into when Sanga first got here,
- 16:15Speaker 6: I know that was our our game plan going into
- 16:18Speaker 6: his star was he if you look at if you
- 16:20Speaker 6: looked at his splits, Yeah, he's got a lot of
- 16:22Speaker 6: strikeouts on it. But how many strikes was he throwing
- 16:26Speaker 6: with it? It was it was they were all chase strikes.
- 16:28Speaker 6: So the four ball, it's not, it's not something that's
- 16:31Speaker 6: going to fool you.
- 16:32Speaker 5: It's not.
- 16:32Speaker 6: You're not gonna think it's a fastball coming in and
- 16:34Speaker 6: it's gonna drop off the table. Those are the ones that,
- 16:37Speaker 6: in my opinion, really are the tough ones. Is the
- 16:39Speaker 6: ones that they don't come in with that almost knuckleball
- 16:42Speaker 6: sideway spin. They come in looking like a two seam
- 16:46Speaker 6: and then just diving off the table. So it's yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 6: it's it's a matter of canny control it because if
- 16:52Speaker 6: you can't and you can recognize it, you got to
- 16:54Speaker 6: be disciplined enough as a hitter to just not swing
- 16:56Speaker 6: at it and wait for something else because it's gonna
- 16:58Speaker 6: be a ball majority of the time time because the
- 17:01Speaker 6: chances of him controlling it are not very good. So
- 17:03Speaker 6: it can move all, it can move all you want.
- 17:06Speaker 6: You got to be able to throw it for a
- 17:07Speaker 6: strike whenever you need to throw it for a strike,
- 17:09Speaker 6: And so that's what it's really going to come down to.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Absolutely, But it seems like you kind of had that
- 17:13Speaker 2: immediate wow factor in camp with it right, he faced
- 17:16Speaker 2: astro hitters for the first time.
- 17:18Speaker 1: He showed a lot.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Of of you know, deception as they explained it Hose TV.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Altuve was talking about his slider movement, Carlos Correa talking
- 17:28Speaker 2: about the splitter in the fastball, so you have to
- 17:31Speaker 2: imagine AJ that means it's going to translate. Well, if
- 17:33Speaker 2: he's already wowing guys in camp right now, just in
- 17:36Speaker 2: a live VP.
- 17:37Speaker 4: If you can throw it over the plate, he can't,
- 17:39Speaker 4: and he can't. You can't really sit on that pitch
- 17:40Speaker 4: because it's I remember the one pitch he gave me
- 17:43Speaker 4: more trouble than anything. And I don't know if it
- 17:45Speaker 4: wit agrees as a split, especially a hard split, because
- 17:48Speaker 4: you can't sit on it looks so much like a fastball.
- 17:51Speaker 4: And the problem is when you say, oh, make him
- 17:52Speaker 4: get the ball up. A lot of times when they
- 17:54Speaker 4: throw splits, they throw the high fastball ve low, so
- 17:56Speaker 4: then they throw the high fastball velo and then you say, oh,
- 17:58Speaker 4: I gotta get him down and then throw the split
- 18:00Speaker 4: off of it. Roger Clemens right, the high fastball and
- 18:03Speaker 4: then the split off of it, or if they have
- 18:05Speaker 4: good angle like a guy like Clements had they throw
- 18:08Speaker 4: it right at your knees with the fastball and you're saying, oh,
- 18:10Speaker 4: I got to get the ball up, and then he
- 18:12Speaker 4: just paint that fastball down and then they throw the
- 18:14Speaker 4: split right off of it, and you just look like
- 18:16Speaker 4: a fool. Tim Hudson was another great example of it.
- 18:19Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the one, is the one that looks like
- 18:21Speaker 6: the heater, and U for whatever reason, I always always
- 18:24Speaker 6: had a lot of success with the split. For again
- 18:26Speaker 6: whatever reason, I never hit the change up very good.
- 18:29Speaker 6: If it looked like a heater coming in and he
- 18:31Speaker 6: pulled a string on it, I was never very good
- 18:32Speaker 6: at it.
- 18:33Speaker 5: But for a split.
- 18:34Speaker 6: Majority of them I could recognize, and if I could
- 18:36Speaker 6: see the spin difference, then I had a chance. But
- 18:39Speaker 6: so I was always kind of partial to it. If
- 18:41Speaker 6: a guy had a split, get me in there. But
- 18:44Speaker 6: these these ones coming in now, especially from the Japanese pitchers,
- 18:48Speaker 6: are like you said earlier, they're not they're not split.
- 18:50Speaker 5: They're more of a they're more of big fork balls.
- 18:53Speaker 6: And I think that's as you said, with Logan Gilbert
- 18:56Speaker 6: throwing it too, I think that's becoming a little bit
- 18:57Speaker 6: more of the trend than the hard Roger Clemens type split.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Okay, so let's take a look at this yesterday when
- 19:08Speaker 2: they were lining up for the anthems. This is from
- 19:11Speaker 2: our good friend Chandler Rome. He said, attendance obviously at
- 19:17Speaker 2: Great Fruit game at Great Fruit League games, very optional
- 19:21Speaker 2: for veteran players who aren't in that day's lineup.
- 19:23Speaker 1: We all knew that.
- 19:24Speaker 2: However, Emi was on the first baseline in the national
- 19:29Speaker 2: anthem prior to the game against the Nationals and it
- 19:32Speaker 2: was his first major league baseball game.
- 19:35Speaker 1: What do you guys think of that?
- 19:36Speaker 6: Hey, jay Aw, I was just gonna say, he must
- 19:41Speaker 6: have had a tea time setup, so you know he
- 19:43Speaker 6: wanted to watch him get want to watch a little
- 19:44Speaker 6: bit of baseball.
- 19:46Speaker 5: No, but I think it's great.
- 19:47Speaker 6: I mean, a new guy probably sticking around to see
- 19:50Speaker 6: his pitcher's throw and trying to get acclimated to the team.
- 19:54Speaker 6: And that's a good time when you're in the dugout
- 19:57Speaker 6: to talk to guys, hang out with guys you don't
- 20:00Speaker 6: really get to see throughout the day. Maybe and you know,
- 20:03Speaker 6: good for him for sticking around in the dugout and
- 20:06Speaker 6: getting talked to some of those teammates.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Maybe he just really likes the USA. And also maybe
- 20:15Speaker 4: he was rooting for USA and hockey today we don't know.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Maybe he's rooting for the USA and the WBC.
- 20:19Speaker 3: How do we know.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Maybe he just really likes the USA. It's a very
- 20:22Speaker 4: patriotic twenty four hours, for sure.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So it is twenty four hours.
- 20:28Speaker 2: I just know in my six years of covering spring training,
- 20:31Speaker 2: if a guy didn't have to be out there for
- 20:32Speaker 2: the national anthem during a Great Fruit League game or
- 20:34Speaker 2: whatever it was, they were certainly not there.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So that's a that's a different thing to see, I guess.
- 20:41Speaker 2: All right, let's move on to say this is Zuki
- 20:44Speaker 2: on his future as he enters the last year of
- 20:47Speaker 2: his contract. This is from our friend Jesse Rogers. He said,
- 20:52Speaker 2: I'm not sure about the last year of his contract.
- 20:54Speaker 2: He said, it depends on my performance. He said, if
- 20:56Speaker 2: I perform well, I want to stay. I feel like
- 20:59Speaker 2: I still haven't put up the numbers that people are
- 21:01Speaker 2: expecting me to. It comes down to how I perform.
- 21:06Speaker 2: So that's a pretty generic statement, right. I think it's
- 21:10Speaker 2: fair for him to say that, you know, he hasn't
- 21:11Speaker 2: put up the numbers that people are expecting him to.
- 21:14Speaker 1: But guys what do you think about that?
- 21:16Speaker 2: And just his mentality entering the last year of his
- 21:19Speaker 2: contract and maybe him saying that, you know, he's not
- 21:22Speaker 2: entirely happy with his numbers either.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Is anybody ever wait, is anybody ever entirely happy with
- 21:30Speaker 4: their numbers? No matter how I mean, unless you're maybe
- 21:32Speaker 4: Aaron Judge or Shoeo Tani or someone like that, is
- 21:35Speaker 4: anyone ever totally happy? There's always things you think you
- 21:37Speaker 4: can get better at. Sayazuki's been a good player for
- 21:39Speaker 4: the Cubs, He's helped them win a lot of games,
- 21:42Speaker 4: and is the last year of his contract. It's smart,
- 21:45Speaker 4: it's good negotiating play by him. He wants to stay there,
- 21:47Speaker 4: So how do you get out in front of this?
- 21:49Speaker 4: But yeah, listen, cool, cool, say cool.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Yeah, I like it. I like the I like to comment.
- 21:57Speaker 6: You know, I haven't played where I feel like my
- 21:59Speaker 6: game can be and if I play well, then I'd
- 22:03Speaker 6: love to stay here. And yeah, I think he's set
- 22:06Speaker 6: himself up for having a good first half and saying
- 22:08Speaker 6: all right, let's go, let's let's get something worked out
- 22:10Speaker 6: before I hit for agency, because I'm gonna have teams
- 22:12Speaker 6: calling me. So I think he's a good player. I
- 22:14Speaker 6: think he's got a great, powerful right handed swing, and
- 22:19Speaker 6: that's uh, you gotta do it.
- 22:20Speaker 5: You gotta put the numbers together.
- 22:23Speaker 2: All right, Let's talk a little bit about katel Marte.
- 22:26Speaker 2: He says he's been working on his defense, and he said, quote,
- 22:29Speaker 2: I need a gold glove. We've obviously heard a lot
- 22:32Speaker 2: of guys say, you know, things like that. But when
- 22:35Speaker 2: you hear him say that that he's working on his
- 22:37Speaker 2: defense and that that's kind of one of his goals
- 22:40Speaker 2: right now. I mean you would assume that's a goal
- 22:42Speaker 2: for a lot of guys, but it seems like he's
- 22:45Speaker 2: he's putting a big emphasis on that. AJ, what do
- 22:47Speaker 2: you think.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Good? Good for him.
- 22:49Speaker 4: He's already one of the best offensive players in baseball.
- 22:52Speaker 4: En if you had a gold glove to it, good
- 22:54Speaker 4: for him, and it will only helped the Diamondbacks win.
- 22:56Speaker 4: So good for catel Marte to to take this next step.
- 22:59Speaker 4: And I just want to know what you played second base?
- 23:01Speaker 4: How do you make yourself a goal glover? Can you
- 23:02Speaker 4: just wake up one day and say, man, I need
- 23:04Speaker 4: to work on this metric or that metric and become
- 23:06Speaker 4: a gold Glover.
- 23:07Speaker 3: How does that work?
- 23:07Speaker 4: Because I man If someone only would have told that,
- 23:09Speaker 4: I would have won so many Gold Gloves and the
- 23:11Speaker 4: American League ahead of Pud Rodriguez and Joe Mauer and
- 23:15Speaker 4: you know, I was in the Nashley had a Yachtie
- 23:17Speaker 4: Molina and those guys.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Someone just would have told me. Yeah.
- 23:22Speaker 5: So it's it's it's weird now with all these analytics.
- 23:24Speaker 5: Is you gotta one. You gotta get the opportunities to
- 23:28Speaker 5: make the place.
- 23:29Speaker 6: You gotta have the balls hit that are in those
- 23:33Speaker 6: like those ranges where you can you can make the
- 23:37Speaker 6: play and get the guy out.
- 23:37Speaker 5: You gotta have the slow guy running.
- 23:39Speaker 6: He's got to hit you the ball that you got
- 23:41Speaker 6: to go a long way for and field and throw
- 23:43Speaker 6: and make it out to get your your you know,
- 23:47Speaker 6: your your range factor or whatever it is up and
- 23:51Speaker 6: you're out to buve average up and all this stuff.
- 23:53Speaker 6: So that's that's the first thing, is you got to
- 23:54Speaker 6: get the balls hit to you in the right situations.
- 23:57Speaker 5: He can improve on his jumps.
- 23:59Speaker 6: I don't think his his just kind of looking vaguely
- 24:02Speaker 6: at his numbers over the over the course of his career.
- 24:05Speaker 6: He's a he's a super athletic guy, but his jumps
- 24:08Speaker 6: have not been great, So that's something you can work on.
- 24:11Speaker 6: He's got he's got a strong arm. I think the
- 24:13Speaker 6: biggest thing for him is that he's no longer bouncing around.
- 24:16Speaker 6: You know, there was a time in his career where
- 24:18Speaker 6: he was playing center field. He played some short stop
- 24:20Speaker 6: early on, some third base even and and and some
- 24:24Speaker 6: second base, and now he's pretty much just a second
- 24:27Speaker 6: base and that that that's the big thing, is being
- 24:29Speaker 6: able to get that every day and get comfortable and
- 24:32Speaker 6: feel like you're you're just like anything. The more you
- 24:36Speaker 6: do it, the better you're gonna get at it. And
- 24:37Speaker 6: so I think him now having a couple of years
- 24:40Speaker 6: in a row of playing solely second base under his belt,
- 24:43Speaker 6: if he's really engaged and working on getting better. He's
- 24:47Speaker 6: had some some pretty solid years defensively a second and
- 24:51Speaker 6: so I think it's in there, just a matter of
- 24:53Speaker 6: can he put it together through a whole year and
- 24:55Speaker 6: not make the stupid air, make the big plays when
- 24:58Speaker 6: they're hit to him. I think there's a he could
- 25:01Speaker 6: win a Gold Glove. There's a lot of really good
- 25:02Speaker 6: defensive second baseman though in the National League. I will say,
- 25:05Speaker 6: so he's got to He's got some some big competition
- 25:08Speaker 6: ahead of him, but he is a freak athlete and
- 25:10Speaker 6: I think I think if all the stars align, then
- 25:13Speaker 6: he could He could probably do it well.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And he talks about how he's been working with Nolan
- 25:19Speaker 2: Aeronato and how he said he's gonna help him win
- 25:22Speaker 2: a Gold Glove Aga. Can you think of anybody better
- 25:24Speaker 2: for him to work with than Nolan who's won ten
- 25:28Speaker 2: Gold Glove awards, an eight time All Star. I mean,
- 25:31Speaker 2: that's just a cheat sheet right next to him every
- 25:34Speaker 2: day in the clubhouse.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Right for sure.
- 25:36Speaker 4: For sure, it's a different position, different side of the field,
- 25:38Speaker 4: but Nolan knows what he's doing. The problem is is
- 25:41Speaker 4: Nico Herr Horner for the Cubs is pretty good. He's
- 25:43Speaker 4: pretty entrenched there with the Gold Glove, so I don't
- 25:46Speaker 4: know how he's gonna jump them. But again, Nolan can
- 25:49Speaker 4: help them. Nolan can show him. Nolan knows how to
- 25:51Speaker 4: do it. But I don't know if Nolan's ever played
- 25:55Speaker 4: second base, so I don't know. But I think Kateel
- 25:57Speaker 4: can do it. He's athletic enough and he just stays healthy,
- 25:59Speaker 4: especially his lower half. Health Wise, I think Katell could
- 26:02Speaker 4: definitely do this and become even better if that's possible
- 26:05Speaker 4: of a player.
- 26:07Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the thing is you got you got Nico,
- 26:10Speaker 6: you got Bryce Terrang with Milwaukee, you got Bryson Stott
- 26:13Speaker 6: with Philly. I mean, those those are the three guys
- 26:16Speaker 6: that have really been battling it out for that goal
- 26:18Speaker 6: glove over the last couple of years. And but I
- 26:21Speaker 6: will say that that Nolan's I think Nolan's biggest besides
- 26:27Speaker 6: just the unbelievable accuracy of his arm, I think his
- 26:30Speaker 6: biggest attribute is the jumps that he gets on balls
- 26:32Speaker 6: because he's not the most athletic guy in the world.
- 26:34Speaker 5: I mean, he's not.
- 26:35Speaker 6: The fleetest to foot, but the way he can anticipate
- 26:38Speaker 6: but where balls are hit and his angles he takes
- 26:40Speaker 6: the balls that are hit, and his jumps that he
- 26:42Speaker 6: gets or why he can get to those balls and
- 26:44Speaker 6: make all these amazing plays. And so I hope that's
- 26:47Speaker 6: what they're talking about, and it could be a big
- 26:49Speaker 6: difference in taking Katl's game defensive game to the next level.
- 26:53Speaker 6: But I just think there's too much traffic there for
- 26:55Speaker 6: him to win a goal glove.
- 27:04Speaker 2: All right, let's take a look at the NL Pennant odds.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Of course, the favorite the Dodgers. Uh, no surprise there.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Biggest liability the Pirates and then obviously the Dodgers kind
- 27:18Speaker 2: of run the table there, guys.
- 27:19Speaker 1: What do you think about this?
- 27:21Speaker 2: What do you think about the Dodgers?
- 27:23Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:24Speaker 6: I mean, obviously that the Dodgers or have made the
- 27:30Speaker 6: news because they spend all the money and do all
- 27:31Speaker 6: the stuff, and they've won back to back World Series
- 27:33Speaker 6: and you can't discredit them for that because they've they've
- 27:36Speaker 6: been the team that won the last game of the
- 27:38Speaker 6: season two years in a row. I think there might
- 27:40Speaker 6: be a little bit of playoff fatigue that sets in
- 27:43Speaker 6: this year. So I would imagine that somebody else in
- 27:47Speaker 6: the Nation League. The National League is kind of is
- 27:49Speaker 6: kind of stacked, and I would kind of I would
- 27:51Speaker 6: imagine that somebody else in the n L is going
- 27:53Speaker 6: to step in and and overthrow them this year. So
- 27:57Speaker 6: that's kind of where my where my guts at. So
- 28:00Speaker 6: you know, I would say that maybe stay away from
- 28:03Speaker 6: the future bets with the Dodgers this year.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Who do you think is their biggest challenge this year?
- 28:08Speaker 2: The biggest challenger, I.
- 28:10Speaker 6: Mean, I mean, you got you got the you got
- 28:12Speaker 6: the Phillies. I think the Braves are sneaky, I really do,
- 28:16Speaker 6: you know, they're kind of under the raider. I think
- 28:17Speaker 6: they're a really good team if they can stay healthy.
- 28:20Speaker 6: The Podres are solid. I think San Francisco. I mean
- 28:25Speaker 6: that that division over there is is gonna it's gonna
- 28:28Speaker 6: put up a it's gonna put up a fight. In
- 28:31Speaker 6: the Cubs. The Cubs had a gread year last year.
- 28:33Speaker 6: I think they can build on that. So there's just
- 28:35Speaker 6: a bunch of good teams and so I think the
- 28:37Speaker 6: Dodgers are gonna have their hands full this year.
- 28:39Speaker 2: How far ahead do you think the Dodgers are from
- 28:41Speaker 2: everybody else at this point? When you look at everything
- 28:44Speaker 2: that they were able to do this offseason.
- 28:47Speaker 6: It's just they they just they just don't have a weakness.
- 28:50Speaker 6: You know that they just got strengthd everywhere. They got
- 28:52Speaker 6: strengthen and as they got so much depth in the
- 28:56Speaker 6: starting pitching, their lineup is I mean, it's just All
- 29:00Speaker 6: Star after All Star after All Star, like perennial All
- 29:03Speaker 6: Star after All Star, and then you've got a guy
- 29:05Speaker 6: like Miguel Rojas who comes up with the biggest hit
- 29:08Speaker 6: of of the season. So it's you know, you just
- 29:11Speaker 6: they have a little bit of everything going on. And
- 29:15Speaker 6: but like I said, I think that a little bit
- 29:17Speaker 6: of you kind of saw it last year where they
- 29:19Speaker 6: were they were kind of squeaking by in some certain
- 29:22Speaker 6: and some games and just sort of winning games they
- 29:24Speaker 6: probably shouldn't have won. So I think there's a a
- 29:26Speaker 6: little bit of playoff of teague that might send.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Sorry, there was an anthem.
- 29:35Speaker 4: There was an anthem, So it's okay, exactly, we support you.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Give us your take on the Dodgers, and they're really good.
- 29:46Speaker 4: They're really good, by the way, and and I think
- 29:49Speaker 4: that there will be number one of my power rankings
- 29:51Speaker 4: probably for the entire year like they were last year.
- 29:53Speaker 4: So until someone beats them, they're going to be number
- 29:55Speaker 4: one of my power rankings because they keep signing players,
- 29:57Speaker 4: they keep improving points of weakness. Their outfield last year
- 30:01Speaker 4: was down, So or do they do they go get
- 30:02Speaker 4: Kyle Tuck or their bullpen stunk last year?
- 30:04Speaker 3: So what did they go do? Get Edwin Diaz. I
- 30:06Speaker 3: think they're all right.
- 30:10Speaker 2: We love it all right, whether you're watching the action
