- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coaches Show. Let's talk a little bit about Xavier. They're
- 0:06Speaker 1: coming up at the Excel Center of the Big East opener.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You're defending two titles. The regular season was impressive last
- 0:12Speaker 1: year eighteen and two, and then winning the tournament title
- 0:15Speaker 1: at the Garden was special as well. This is just
- 0:18Speaker 1: the first step. But how important is it getting off
- 0:21Speaker 1: to the right start in this conference for Yukon.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Well, it would be nice, you know, That's that wasn't
- 0:30Speaker 2: you know, a luxury for us last year. You know,
- 0:31Speaker 2: we we and it turned out all right, So you know,
- 0:35Speaker 2: there's an opportunity. You're obviously excited to get the home opener,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you know, with league play, so you know, it's you know,
- 0:47Speaker 2: for us, we understand that you know, the toughness meter,
- 0:50Speaker 2: the rebounding meter, the defensive meter, like doing the hard
- 0:55Speaker 2: things well as well as having you know, an offense
- 1:01Speaker 2: that's going to be efficient and hopefully explosive. You know,
- 1:05Speaker 2: it is going to be the key to just being consistent.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You know, over the course of three months in twenty
- 1:11Speaker 2: you know bar fights, you know, and twenty Big East
- 1:16Speaker 2: bar fights where you're going against some of the best
- 1:19Speaker 2: coaches and you know, some of the best players and
- 1:22Speaker 2: some of the best and toughest basketball environments to play in. So,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, we understand that the magic dust is not
- 1:30Speaker 2: just putting on a Yukon uniform. Just putting on a
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yukon uniform is just kind of a cool experience because
- 1:37Speaker 2: there's so much history, tradition and success in it. But
- 1:43Speaker 2: that that's not there's no magic dust that we have here.
- 1:46Speaker 2: You know, the magic dust is the people. It's the
- 1:49Speaker 2: players and their willingness to play great defense, to play
- 1:54Speaker 2: as hard as humanly possible in a life or death
- 1:57Speaker 2: type of manner, to be physical rebounders of the basketball,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and to play offense for each other, and to execute.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And you know that that's and to absorb all of
- 2:08Speaker 2: the preparation that Luke and Kamani put in with these
- 2:11Speaker 2: scouts and preparing us to go against these foes.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Zach Fremantle will not be available. He's injured. Grad forward.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Came from Jersey t Neck, New Jersey have been very
- 2:23Speaker 1: tough on Yukon a couple of years ago, but he's
- 2:25Speaker 1: been injured most of the last couple of years. But
- 2:27Speaker 1: they have a guy, Ryan Conwell. I want to ask
- 2:29Speaker 1: you about junior guard six ' four leads the team
- 2:33Speaker 1: in steels. He's also forty six percent three point shooter.
- 2:37Speaker 1: This guy's got talent. He's this is third school, went
- 2:40Speaker 1: to Indiana State, most recently started at South Florida as
- 2:43Speaker 1: a freshman. But he is a player on the rise,
- 2:46Speaker 1: averaging sixteen a game. I know you've taken a look
- 2:48Speaker 1: a little bit at him. Six ' four guy, he's
- 2:51Speaker 1: really got some talent.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Yeah, effortless scorer, lefty smooth, big time shooter, big time score.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You know, we're we're really going to have to lock in,
- 3:04Speaker 2: uh you know, lock in on him. He's uh, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: he's the type of guy that could just light you up.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And I think, uh, you know, having just face battle,
- 3:13Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, having just dealt with an
- 3:15Speaker 2: explosive score that we made some mistakes on, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 2: hopefully here we can uh you know, we could rectify that,
- 3:21Speaker 2: learn from that experience and uh and just uh you know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: take away more things in this matchup. But that's easier
- 3:28Speaker 2: said than done. He makes some very very hard shots,
- 3:31Speaker 2: uh that even is able to trump really good defense.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Caleb battle the other night at the Garden was
- 3:39Speaker 1: he got on a heater there and he was tough
- 3:41Speaker 1: to stop and you come was able to overcome it.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Uh So the conference looking at some crazy things have
- 3:47Speaker 1: been happening, Like Marquette, they won at Maryland, they beat Perdue,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and then most recently I lost at Iowa Date and
- 3:53Speaker 1: then lost to Dayton. And we know all about Dayton.
- 3:56Speaker 1: They're pretty good Atlantic ten team.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think any of the results have been uh,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you know, surprising. I think, uh the Maryland win was
- 4:04Speaker 2: a great win on the road. You know, I think
- 4:07Speaker 2: you'll do it home. You know, obviously, you know, Marquette
- 4:11Speaker 2: is a it's a you know, it's a great program.
- 4:14Speaker 2: It's a championship level program. We have tremendous respect for them,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and uh, you know they're coming into the league play
- 4:20Speaker 2: with a with a great you know, great net. You know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: they've they've you know, they've done their part for the league.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I think in the non conference in terms of you know,
- 4:29Speaker 2: coming in with great numbers, which uh you know creates
- 4:33Speaker 2: excitement for league play, but that also uh you know,
- 4:36Speaker 2: coming in with a with a net of the net
- 4:38Speaker 2: of nine is just it's great for the league in
- 4:42Speaker 2: terms of more you know, more teams having an opportunity
- 4:46Speaker 2: to to to get to the postseason.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Georgetown won at Syracuse in their last game. That's
- 4:51Speaker 1: always tough. Uh. They got Creighton at home on Friday.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Creighton's had some up and down results, but they did
- 4:57Speaker 1: beat Kansas, So that's gonna be a good on Friday.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It looks like, yeah, to see the Paul and and uh,
- 5:04Speaker 2: you know in Georgetown and and uh, you know, they've
- 5:06Speaker 2: obviously made huge improvements and where they're at. I mean
- 5:09Speaker 2: they've done a you know obviously there you know, Ed's
- 5:12Speaker 2: building his program and and Chris is has done an
- 5:16Speaker 2: amazing job as well as Ed has of uh A
- 5:20Speaker 2: year two for Ed, year one for you know, for
- 5:22Speaker 2: Chris Holtman, you know, really being strong in non conference play,
- 5:27Speaker 2: like winning all the games. Uh, you know that they
- 5:29Speaker 2: felt like they could win. And then even you know,
- 5:32Speaker 2: Georgetown being able to go on the road and beat
- 5:33Speaker 2: Syracuse there that was that was great for the league. Obviously,
- 5:37Speaker 2: it's great for Georgetown. The league is obviously, uh, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 2: it enhances the league with with a great Georgetown and
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know Creighton just bad luck with uh, you know,
- 5:47Speaker 2: bad luck with with Pop Isaac's that just uh you know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: that stinks for you know, for uh, you know, for
- 5:54Speaker 2: coach mac and and and for their for their team.
- 5:57Speaker 2: But yeah, they still have one of the best players
- 5:59Speaker 2: in the country. Uh, a tremendous guard in in uh
- 6:03Speaker 2: In Ashworth and uh, you know, and some more firepower
- 6:06Speaker 2: on the perimeter.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Villanova had a little rough start, lost to Columbia,
- 6:11Speaker 1: lost to Saint Joe's, but then knocked off Cincinnati, who
- 6:14Speaker 1: was a top twenty five club. Cincinnati just beat Xavier recently.
- 6:17Speaker 1: They also won against Temple. Looks like they've won three
- 6:19Speaker 1: in a row. Like the Wildcats are starting to find
- 6:22Speaker 1: themselves a little bit here. Yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I think the best thing you could you can see
- 6:26Speaker 2: or say about people is, you know, how do they
- 6:29Speaker 2: handle you know, adversity or how do you handle things?
- 6:34Speaker 2: You know, uh when when when things aren't looking great?
- 6:37Speaker 2: And I think, uh, you know, when from the start
- 6:39Speaker 2: that that that Kyle and Villanova had, it would have
- 6:43Speaker 2: been real easy for them, you know to uh, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 2: to head into a tailspin, you know, and after some
- 6:50Speaker 2: of those losses, but uh, he's shown a lot of
- 6:53Speaker 2: He's shown his strength as a leader and their quality
- 6:56Speaker 2: as a team. We face something very similar, uh in
- 7:00Speaker 2: the early part of our season where uh, you know,
- 7:03Speaker 2: people are down on you and and being very critical.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And I think one of the best things, one of
- 7:08Speaker 2: the coolest opportunities you can get in life is, uh,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you know, when when you're down and you're struggling and
- 7:14Speaker 2: people are kicking you and and uh and uh and
- 7:17Speaker 2: negative about you is showing how strong you are. And
- 7:20Speaker 2: Villanova's done that with Kyle. Uh. Definitely the last conference.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and a quick note, you got Butler coming up
- 7:28Speaker 1: on the weekend. We won't get into that, but they
- 7:30Speaker 1: beat Northwestern earlier in the season and they have a
- 7:33Speaker 1: Marquette game on Wednesday on the road, and then they
- 7:37Speaker 1: lost to Wisconsin, who was a really good team. So
- 7:39Speaker 1: Butler's another team that when you have to play them
- 7:42Speaker 1: on the road, that's not going to be easy.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Hinkle's a tough place. It's a fun place to go play,
- 7:48Speaker 2: you know, the the historic nature of of of the
- 7:52Speaker 2: field house there, and uh, you know, an opportunity. Obviously,
- 7:56Speaker 2: road games feel like they're worth you know, one and
- 7:59Speaker 2: a half, so you know, I feel like they're winning
- 8:03Speaker 2: on the road, especially in conference place. Conference play is
- 8:06Speaker 2: not easy anywhere.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a great one, great win last year
- 8:10Speaker 1: at Butler as a matter of fact. All right, coach,
- 8:12Speaker 1: we appreciate it. Onto Xavier that's the home game, and
- 8:16Speaker 1: then the Butler on the weekend. Will be with you
- 8:18Speaker 1: all the way. Thank you, sir. We'll talk to you soon,
- 8:21Speaker 1: all right, Mike, see you, Bob. All right. That's Dan
- 8:24Speaker 1: Hurley back with Jalen Stewart as we continue on the
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show here on lear Field
