- 0:00In our outer lives in the world, an enormous focus and emphasis
- 0:06is placed on development of skills that can bring success,
- 0:10remuneration or power to the individual.
- 0:15It may be development of the physical body to such a degree
- 0:19that one can become pre eminent in some specific sport or
- 0:23competitive activity. Those individuals who succeed in
- 0:27this arena become world renowned celebrities and can earn 10s or
- 0:32even hundreds of millions of dollars in their career through
- 0:36the sport and through the endorsements and opportunities
- 0:40that arise as a result of their name recognition and the
- 0:44adulation bestowed upon them by their fans.
- 0:48Which itself becomes a source of leverage for further income as
- 0:53they parlay that recognition into lucrative opportunities.
- 0:59If the development takes place in the mental field, people
- 1:03become scientists, technologists, inventors, or may
- 1:07become highly skilled and fluent in the details of translating
- 1:11ideas into real world results for the leading individuals in
- 1:16their respective fields. There are prizes, recognition,
- 1:22financial remuneration and careers that can follow.
- 1:26Or they may be able to create some new technology or
- 1:30methodology that catapults them into the lead in business.
- 1:36In the field of art and culture, based on a blending of physical,
- 1:40vital and mental capacities. There are also enormous
- 1:44opportunities that come to those who are skilled and highly
- 1:48trained in their respective activities.
- 1:52Those who develop strong powers of the vital nature can become
- 1:56dominant leaders, managers, political leaders, and
- 2:00charismatic role models. We thus naturally believe that
- 2:05success in the spiritual field must follow along a similar line
- 2:10and that mental, emotional, vital or physical skills must
- 2:15play an important role in achieving spiritual realization.
- 2:20This actually is a mistaken idea that can lead to an
- 2:24overconfidence by those who bring their developed skill sets
- 2:28to the practice of yoga. They may excel at carrying out
- 2:32the physical asanas or become leaders in a particular path or
- 2:37methodology, but that does not imply that they are actually
- 2:42advancing quickly on the spiritual plane.
- 2:45They may actually be impeding their progress by their focus on
- 2:50the external skill sets that are so rewarding in the outer life,
- 2:54rather than on the inner movement and totally different
- 2:58types of skills needed to shift the awareness away from the
- 3:02trappings of outer worldly success, recognition and wealth.
- 3:10Alternatively, those who do not bring those specific worldly
- 3:14skills to the process may feel discouraged if they interact
- 3:18with those who have mental attainment, artistic
- 3:22capabilities, vital leadership roles, or physical capacities.
- 3:27There is, however, no need for such discouragement, as it may
- 3:32be that what they bring to the process is even more important
- 3:38in the spiritual realm than all the capacities Sri Orobindo
- 3:44notes quote. A simple, straight and sincere
- 3:49call and aspiration from the heart is the one important thing
- 3:54and more essential and effective than capacities.
- 3:59Also to get the consciousness to turn inwards, not remain outward
- 4:04going, is of great importance to arrive at the inner call, the
- 4:10inner experience, the inner presence.
