So I think Pastor Nate Purvis must be doing something right in Rock Springs to have these two guys with me today. So shout out Nate. he's also on staff with FCA. So a multi-talented guy. but our guest today, welcome in. This is Lincoln Young. Lincoln, welcome to three seven Faithful Podcast. How are you today? Lincoln Young: Good, how are you? Thank you for having me, Devin. I appreciate this opportunity. I'm blessed to be here. Devin Davis: Yeah, this is this is awesome. I I I mean, you guys are just some solid guys that I I've really grown to love and just love your boldness and courage to stand up for your faith. So it's it's great to have you here today. And we were talking off camera, but I I thought it'd be interesting. Just tell our listeners what you just got back from doing. I think that's kind of a cool story. Lincoln Young: Yeah, I just got back from doing a 40 mile five day backpacking trip with my buddies and up in the Wind Rivers, it was it was amazing. We had some pretty cool encounters and just to see all of God's creation up there and it just brought me a lot of gratitude just knowing I could have the ability to go up and do those things and do that long trek and be healthy enough to do that and just to see and experience some of God's creation that people don't know is out there and that they don't yet take into consideration that like this is all from God and this is what God Devin Davis: Yeah. Lincoln Young: has created and this how beautiful God is. Devin Davis: And isn't that true? I mean, like when you're in that situation and like like your the pictures you shared on social media were awesome, but just being able to see, I mean, the word I guess to me is vastness, right? Is how vast God's creation is. And we I think we don't get a chance to slow down and really take that in sometimes. Lincoln Young: Yeah, I agree. I had to even go off myself. I kind of just took a time. I went up to a little peak. We got up to about thirteen thousand feet and I just sat there. I took a two hour nap, ended up falling asleep. But and I lost my glasses up there, which I'm bummed about. It was brutal the whole way back because it was sun was bright. But I just got to go up there and talk to God and just overlook everything and just realize like thank you just for allowing me to be here and to see this. Like it's a sign that you brought me on this trip to just see even more of how big you are and how good you are and just the things that you give us. So I was super grateful Devin Davis: That's so cool. Lincoln Young: for that. Devin Davis: so did you have decent weather while you were there? Lincoln Young: Yeah, we we had really good weather. one night, I I believe it was Tuesday night, we had just a little bit of rain, but we had our rain covers on our tents and it was nothing bad. But we hiked back 13 miles Thursday and we got rained on pretty hard that day. It was just just that day, but every other day was pretty warm and we got to jump in the lake and the creeks, which was unpleasant but fun because it was super cold. Like Devin Davis: Ha ha ha. Lincoln Young: fresh glacier water and it was it was like chiseled me up. Devin Davis: Did you run into anybody did you see any other people while you were up there? Lincoln Young: Yeah, we we seen some people, there was a few guides that were there the we actually going down and coming back to the trailhead, we've seen a group of Amish people with some horses, which is pretty cool. And on our way in, we've seen people with llamas. But the most people that we seen was like about three miles in, we would see them and they would just kind of look at the views. Not many people like went way back, like the fourteen miles, the twenty miles back. And took all those trails. We only passed by two people and one of them was doing a seventy mile hike. He was on his way to just to finish seventy miles. I think he started Devin Davis: Seventy miles. Lincoln Young: he almost did the whole Wind River Range in six days. Devin Davis: Wow. That's crazy. I mean that's that's why it's great Lincoln Young: You there? Devin Davis: to be from Wyoming is like, man, to get up there and just like you said, see the beauty of God's creation. So yeah, and you just graduated from Rock Springs. I I guess, you know, I just always kind of like to connect with my with my guests a little bit as far as just like looking at you know, w how your your past, like how what brought you to be where you're at right now, Lincoln Yo Young? What what kind of you know, things did you go through? How did you come to faith? if you wouldn't I wouldn't mind telling our listeners about that. Lincoln Young: Yeah, so it kind of started a lot. I would say Gene was a big part in my faith, honestly. he had his testimony, I'm sure he shared it and it was very powerful. And when he shared it to me, I had b I grew up as a believer, but I would say lukewarm believer because I I just was on the fence and as we all know the devil owns the fence. I just was kind of on and off about the things I would do and I just I I knew God was a thing. I that's what I would tell myself. God was a thing and that Jesus was someone who just so happened to die on the cross. And I had a Bible, but it's funny how I listened to the song by Josiah Queen, Dust on Your Bibles and I feel like that hits a lot kind of with how my testimony is because my I would look at my Bible and it would literally have dust on it, thick amount of dust. And One day I decided to open it and didn't know where to start. I started reading Genesis and I got about halfway through throughout the week and I was like, What does this even mean? Like, this is crazy stuff. And I'm like, like, does God want us to process this? How like how are we supposed to do this? And Gene brought me in, we hung out and he was like, Hey, I have a just kind of gut feeling that, you know. You you had something happen. And I was like, I mean, I opened up my Bible for the first time that you told me to do. He's like, That's what it is. That's what it is. And he's like, Would you want to do a Bible study right now? I was like, I'm not sure what the stuff means, but let's do it. Let's do it. And I was like, Okay. All right. I'm ready to go. And started going through. I was like, okay, some of this is making sense. And I just started to realize like I gotta take it slow. And I prayed and I prayed and God brought me to the realization that like He's got a plan for me. And I was sent one night just on my phone and I came across an Instagram video that kind of just like as soon as I scrolled to I felt like a a flush of joy. Like everything that was in me just I feel like everything was flushed out and I was hit with just joy and I started to tear up because I was like, man, like where does this feeling come from? And it's like the video just told me, you know. God brings you things in your life for a reason. And there's so many obstacles that'll come in your way, but you gotta realize that He has a plan for you and that you start somewhere and you end somewhere. And that ending is in our our heaven above. And I didn't quite understand that at the moment, but it was something that stuck in me. And I started to think about it. And I started reading through the Bible. I told Gene about it, and he told me where to go. He told me Romans. I read through Romans, I was like, you know, I feel like this is like meant for me, you know. And just throughout my high school career with wrestling, I feel like I was able to encounter God a lot. I was able to like find ways to worship him in instead of worshiping wrestling. I feel like at my freshman sophomore year, I was idolizing wrestling and a state title. Like that's that was what I was meant to do, or else I had no purpose in life. And I started to realize once when I wrestle for God, things come more. Like I start to realize that my faith is built on his foundation, on the blood of Jesus. And that I'm just grateful to have the opportunity to do all those things. And after my sophomore year, after I lost in the finals, I kinda became distant from God because I thought that, you know, I was doing better in my faith. And lost and finals I thought he'd was supposed to be the one that was supposed to give me things and make me feel good and I didn't feel good after that and I didn't know what to do. I was lost. I didn't really take Gene's advice and you know, the summer went on and I started to like kind of get back into the room and start working hard and I realized like I'm wanting to do this a lot more. Maybe God's putting in this my this in my mind to, you know, get back to it and Started reading the Bible a lot. Like I was that's all I wanted to do. I was just reading the Bible or wrestling. Reading the Bible wrestling. I would go to work and I would just like, hey, did you hear that like this is what happened in the Bible? And it was just like random things that like didn't make sense to me. And I was like, I mean, I'm doing all this stuff, but why there's just it's just random. Like, when have I ever wanted to do this? And it really just I don't even know how to explain it to another person on how I feel about it and how I felt. But when I got home one night from wrestling practice, I it wasn't the best practice I had. I know I had a rough practice, I was upset with myself and it was almost like I heard a I'm proud of you type thing, but I didn't hear those words. It but it's like it popped in my mind and it was that flush of joy again. I was like, wow. No, I think this this isn't coincidental. Like it doesn't happen in these times just randomly. Like someone's telling me this, and I believe it's God telling me, like, hey, I'm I'm here with you. Like, you're gonna fail. It's not just me. It's not just you. Like God's with us the whole way. He's our foundation. And once I started wrestling for him and knowing that like if I win or I lose it like that that none of that matters. None of that matters. It matters if I'm sticking to his planet and I'm just doing what I can to the best of my ability every day. Then I'm I'm good to go. Well then I started winning and winning and I was doing better. I was placing at these high tournaments, these hard tournaments and I was like, okay, I'm on a roll. But then I realized like it's not the medals. Like it's not what I it's not the state title. You know, I lost again my junior year and Yeah, it hurt, but I was like, it's God's plan. Like, there's nothing I can do about it. I mean, it's it's gonna be a lot better down the road than a state title. I'm not gonna remember it. I'm not gonna really care for it. It's done and over with. There's nothing I can do about it now. And started doing a lot of Bible studies with Gene and we started going through out our stuff, and this was prior to him blowing out his shoulder, and he went through kind of a A dark depression stuff and I helped him because he helped me. And I was like, Hey, remember all these things you told me? Like God has a plan for us, whether it's hurtful, whether it's painful, whether we like it or not, it's his plan that's best fit for us. He's like, You're right. And we started doing things. We worked hard together. We were in the room. We were hitting the weights and you know, coming into our senior year, we we told ourselves at the beginning of the year, like, hey, we're doing this for God. Not ourselves. Past years, it just brought us to our attention that like, why why do it for ourselves? That's that's selfish. You know, God was never selfish to us. He was never like, I like this, you know, I'm gonna shoe you away and because you did this. So we gotta come to realize that, you know, this is all for the glory of him. And I would do my prayers. stuff right before my match and I would just give it to God. Like I would in my prayers I would say like win, lose, or draw, whatever it is, I know it's for your plan. And I work for you and you only. Like this is for you. I don't care what happens after this, as long as I stay faithful with you. And He brought me my victories and He brought me my losses. and I lost again in the finals, but you know, I come to find out it Was the bless best b blessing I could have ever asked for. And a lot of people told me I was crazy when I would say that. but you know, I think it brought me obstacles that he gave me so he can tell me, like, so I can know that like I can't do this alone. I'm not gonna be able to get through these obstacles alone. Especially after my sophomore year, I was like, I can't do that alone. Like, there's no way I can do this alone. And he was giving me reminders that I can only get over these obstacles with him. And just each and every day I wake up and I'm literally blessed just to be here. Because I know some people didn't wake up and I don't want to be the one complaining about what things I don't have and what things I didn't get to do when God woke me up. And that means he still has a Devin Davis: Amen. Lincoln Young: plan for me. So each and every day I just I'm thankful for it and I have to work each and every day knowing that. If I didn't work, that wouldn't it's not what God wants for me. That'd be me going against God's plan. And that's not what I want. That's not what he wants. So I just gotta learn every day to trust in him. And it will bring me to far better Devin Davis: That's Lincoln Young: things in life. Devin Davis: You know, the the thing like like that that popped into my head is I I I have a a friend who's a pastor and he uses the word fickle a lot and fickle's not a word that I normally use, but like is isn't it funny that like when you lose or what not just you, like us, when we lose, we tend to who's the what is the first thing we do? We blame God, right? And Like how come I'm losing God? I'm reading my Bible, I'm praying, I'm being faithful, and I'm losing. So we we get upset with God, or that's what we tend to do. But then when we have success and we're doing well, the first person we look at is ourselves, right? Is it Lincoln Young: Yep. Devin Davis: was like, that's me, that's that's that's my work, you know. I'm doing things the right way. God, you're finally taking care of me. And it's funny how fickle we are. But I think the whole key to that is what you just brought out is the thing that balances that out is being grateful, having Lincoln Young: Mm-hmm. Devin Davis: gratitude that that every day is a gift and that we we should use it to to glorify God and how we live, whether it's wrestling, sport, whatever it might be. But gratitude, I think, is the way kind of destroy you know, grumbling or complaining, and gratitude is the way to to to destroy pride or selfishness as well, is just being grateful. And I think that's kind of that's what you've voiced as well. So it sounds like you've you know, I don't I don't know no, we're we're never completely there, right? But it sounds like you've been able to balance that out in your in your approach, I guess, or in your walk with Christ. Do do you feel like that is a true statement at all, Lincoln? Lincoln Young: Yes, a hundred percent. Hundred percent. Gene told me this one day when we were talking, we had a little Bible study with some friends of ours and he said, the most powerful prayer is gratitude. And I that's that that one, like I was like, Whoa, that's really cool. Like that rang a bell in me. I was I wrote that down in my in my journal and I found some verses that I pulled from the Bible and put it like a with that and I was like, It makes a lot of sense. Like the most powerful prayer is gratitude. Cause we don't need to be praying. Like some I think sometimes people think, and even there's a problem I had with praying. Like I would only my prayer would be like, God, can I have this, this, and this and this? Amen. And I think it can't be like that. Like, and I would I Devin Davis: Yeah. Lincoln Young: would repeat things and God tells us, like, give thanks first, like give thanksgiving first, and then The rest follows. Devin Davis: Yep. Amen. Yeah, that's that's a great a great point and I think good advice for us all, you know, when we tend to feel in despair or or discouraged or or when we are you know tend to think too much of ourselves, just that being thankful, praying all always for for God to to realize how grateful we are for how He works. So but I I wanna go Back I mean, so your your high school wrestling career, and just for our listeners, like so you you lost in the state championship as a sophomore, right? Lincoln Young: Yep, I lost in so my freshman year I did I went I went one and two and then sophomore year lost in the finals, junior year and senior year. Devin Davis: my gosh. See and and and Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: like through all that, like what you know, the the normal response, as far as the world goes, the normal would response would be kind of like woe is me, right? And like feel sorry for ourselves or maybe Lincoln Young: Thank you. Devin Davis: even have some anger with God. but that's not that's not at all what I'm hearing from you. So did did you battle at all that that tendency to respond in that manner? Lincoln Young: Yeah, like so one thing I we were at a teen night. So Pastor Nate, he holds teen night sometimes. So we have one today at five o'clock. I unfortunately can't make it because of I have to do some packing stuff and I have to get on a call with one of my college coaches and then some like financial aid stuff that like is going on that you have to like fill out and whatnot with scholarships. but one it was I believe two weeks after I lost in the finals. This this year. And I was telling the st we had to tell like a story that like of when we had battle battled faith with God. And I told him that like my sophomore year when I lost, like I was condemning God. Like I was like, Well, if you're this guy who's supposed to, you know, be great for us, why'd you do this to me? And like why'd you just leave me on my own? And I come to realize like no matter how many steps we take away from God. only one step away. Like I think a lot of people think that, you've done such bad things in your life. There's no way anyone to forgive you. All it takes is for you to repent and you come back to God. And going back to what you said, like just being grateful, I feel like that was a that allowed me to s stay true in my faith no matter what people told me. And like even with the battling of losing, I feel like I was winning in faith. Come time my senior year. Like, yeah, I lost, but I mean, I'm still high in faith. I still am loved by the God who created us. So what's what else is there to have? Devin Davis: Yeah, really in in the in the whole scheme of things, like you mentioned, a state title, I mean, it's great, right? And and something you'll always be proud of. But really does it affect a whole lot in your in your life? I mean, think about what's Lincoln Young: Mm-mm. Devin Davis: ahead for Lincoln Young and I mean, that's really a small thing compared to to really the whole view of what what kind of is in your path for the rest of your life, I think. So Lincoln Young: Right, yeah. I Devin Davis: It it's it's still hard and and and then this year, I'm you know, the it that was that was a tough match, I think Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: to watch and and I know to go through for you because you're a senior, kinda last chance to to win a state championship. And so I I mean, I know how how hard that was. We talked after your match, but I mean You know, kind of looking back on on that match, what do you take away from that as as Lincoln Young, a follower of Christ? what did what did you learn? What did God teach you? How did how are you growing? yeah, is I know that was a tough loss. Lincoln Young: Yeah, I'm I'm glad you asked that because that was something I asked myself as well. Cause and I I've I've admitted it, I've I thought a lot on it. I really broke down. took me a while to overcome that loss and to get past it, but I did some things that were not Christ like. I retaliated, I let my emotions get to me in some ways that should not have. some things were said. But I was also accused of some things that were not said, but that's past the point of no matter what things come my way, no matter what is taken away from me, no matter what happens, being Christ-like and being the person that God wants me to be relies on me just being okay with what happened, not retaliating with anger. He tells us be quick to quick to listen and slow to speak with anger. Devin Davis: Speak. Yep. Lincoln Young: I just I kinda let those emotions follow too fast. and I I want to say there's a I was telling myself like there's an excuse, but now that I look at there's not. Yeah, I was chasing for a state title after failing two times before, but that doesn't matter. No mat like Jesus, he walked all throughout every town you could ask and he tried Helping people and they still didn't believe him in him. But he never retaliated and hurt them or he just wanted to help them. And I think the better way to respond with that would have just maybe even thanked the kid. And I just I'm I'm forgiving of myself because God has told me to forgive myself because I I was condemning myself a lot. I was like, like, why did you do that? Like you're a horrible person for doing that. Like, why would you ever retaliate that way and come to find out, like, I'm not I'm not based off of that one match and that one mess up. We all mess up. And as long as I've talked to God about it and had my talks with him, like he forgives me. He loves me still. He doesn't love me Devin Davis: Amen. Lincoln Young: any less before or after that match. He still loves me the same. Devin Davis: Yep. And I and I think that, you know, like if we I mean we're all being honest with ourselves, right? And you look at I mean, there's times in my life I've responded in ways that I I totally regret or were not in my character at all. And I knew that I I should be better than that, right? As a follower of Christ. so Lincoln Young: Right. Devin Davis: I don't think that's anybody has not responded in my everybody has responded that way. The hard part about it. Which is it was just on such a big stage, right? That's that's Lincoln Young: Mm-hmm. Devin Davis: the hard thing is if you had a responded that way in school, yeah, a few people would have heard about it. But unfortunately, that was that was kind of a big stage and and and so that just magnified everything. But that's that's exactly right. I mean, y you know, y you you learn and I you know, and when I do that, I'm like, man, I don't want to ever do that again, but we're sinners and we I've responded like that again. And so that's the hard part is is just being able to control. You know, one of the biggest character qualities in the Bible is self-control. God talks about that all over and over and over, being self-controlled. And that that's hard. That's a really, really hard thing to do, especially in the heat of the moment, in competition, when when you're just, you know, working so hard for something that you've worked so hard for. and then and then some things like that happened. So I I I'm glad to see how you've handled that, Lincoln, 'cause that that is a hard situation. And you said kind of good came out of that, I think. And that's hard Lincoln Young: It is. Devin Davis: to see, but what do you think was the good that came out of that? Lincoln Young: just realizing that like these obstacles are gonna come my way, like it's not gonna stop. There's no way I can make it toward the rest of my life has no more obstacles. and I just I think that brought me realization that like these things I'm gonna there's gonna be things in my life that are gonna suck. It's gonna be the worst thing and I I'm gonna hate it, but I gotta still rely on my faith in Christ. And knowing that just the whole way there, like he's still with me. And he brings us these challenges to see if we're still true in our faith and to knowing that like we can rely on his faith. That's the best way to do it. And like we if it w if it were up to us, we wouldn't give us give ourselves challenges to see if we're true in our faith. Nobody would. Like we would give ourselves Devin Davis: Yeah. Amen. Lincoln Young: the easiest path. And I feel like he gives us those dark valleys, but if we shine the light of our faith and his faith, we'll be able to see through the whole way. and see what's on the other end and that's the gate. Devin Davis: Yeah. And I think that to I I actually preached at a church in town here today and I preached from John fifteen and and it and and it talks in there about God pruning us, right? He wants us to produce fruit and more an abundant fruit, so he prunes us. And those those situations are really God's pruning is to to know, you know, is Lincoln's faith real? Is he gonna bail on me? how's he gonna respond to this? And so God God prunes you in that situation. Pruning is never comfortable. but it's always what we need and that's the hard thing. I mean, that's that's the sport of wrestling, right though? I mean, Lincoln Young: Yes. Devin Davis: how are you supposed to be get a better become a better wrestler? I mean, if you do it the easy way all the time, yeah, you might as well forget it. so I think that's kind of one of those connections to the to the sport of wrestling for sure. So so now here you are, graduated. And you're looking at different colleges, knowing that you want to continue to wrestle. how did that process go and how did things end up for you to be able to attend Shadown State? That's a that's an awesome opportunity. Lincoln Young: Yeah, so a lot of my I was grateful to have a lot of my recruiting start my junior year. when the portal opened, Western was my first contact and had a lot of other schools come to me and I just I think my junior year I was like looking at too much like, okay, cool. Yeah, I'm getting attention now and I kinda had to my dad had to like ring me back in, like, hey, you got a year or two more left, these colleges understand what's going on. And I kinda just left it up to God. Like prayed over it for two years and, you know, I didn't think that Shatter State was gonna be the one in the end. You know, I kinda had my I my list, but throughout my senior year, I was getting more and I just kinda let those let put those off to the side. I focused on what was ahead and God told me like, you'll have plenty of time to worry about this. I will worry about this while you worry about what's in front of you. And I I didn't let it get over me. Like I didn't let it stress me out or anything. And I thought it was going to, but then at the end of the season then I just started talking to God. Like every prayer before practice, I would pray every time before practice and I would ask him for just to keep me healthy and to lead me to the place that is best fit for me. Whatever place that is. And And obviously ended up being Chattern State. And when I went out on that trip, I just felt a lot of relief. I just felt like, you know, I had to get away from home and God was telling me to go to another place, to sp spread the gospel, to give myself, to kind of show myself and shine my light onto other people there, whether that's town needs it, whether it doesn't, but just I feel like I was a good addition to that program. And just through all the praying, I'm I'm glad you asked this because this was a thing I would tell a lot of people, like they would ask me why should I understate? they would tell me, Western, well, this rate in your hometown, you don't have to really go anywhere. It's a mile from you. It's a really good program. And I started to realize like it wasn't about the program. Like this God has put it in my in my path that colleges college wrestling is part of my path and it's something I've found love and I like I want to compete at the collegiate level. I want to be a national champ and all American. I have it written all over my room, everywhere on my phone. and I just began to just leave it up to him. And he brought me to the the three visits that were best and I feel like he kinda Allowed me to feel the most joy at the place that was best fit for me. And I feel like he also left it up to where do I want to go? Like I feel like he wasn't telling me like, no, don't go there, like like forcing me that to go somewhere, but he was telling me like this you you will be best fit here. Like this is where your best outcome will be. And I just I trusted it. I know that down the road in four years, five years, whatever it is, that whatever his plan is, it's gonna be so amazing and I am just grateful for it and I know that this is the place to be and I'm excited to compete at the division two level and my dad's gonna be traveling all over over the place to come watch me and that's where he wrestled and he coached. So he coached my current head coach now in college and I feel like I just gonna follow my dad's footsteps and see where that leads me with God by my side. Devin Davis: That that that's pretty exciting. And we've had talks about Shattering State and just my experience being there and I I think that'll be a great fit for you and I mean it's kind of nice also. Thank you. they you also have Max going there, right? Maddox is heading to heading Lincoln Young: Yep. He's in the room. Devin Davis: there too. So what's that? Lincoln Young: He's gonna be my roommate and stuff, so that'll be cool. And yeah. Devin Davis: Your roommate. Okay. Lincoln Young: And we're both studying the same thing. Yeah. Devin Davis: So got that's great. Rock Springs and Green River in in one in one room, man. That's a little scary right there. Lincoln Young: Yeah. Yeah. Devin Davis: So that's you'll have him there. And I mean, you're not super far away from home with that. And I there's there's a lot of positives and a lot of pluses there. And I think the hard thing and just wondering what your thoughts are and and if you thought about it really at all is like going to school, going to college. I mean, that's a hard time of your life in that you are out on your own now. And and you get to kind of get away from your parents, not that your parents are bad, but get Lincoln Young: Right. Devin Davis: to be Lincoln Young, right? And and develop, make your choices and do what you want to do. how are you, you know, what's your mindset like? You're you're heading there next week. What are you gonna do to continue to remain in Jesus Christ? I mean, one of the big verses in John 15 again is abide in me. that Jesus tells us to abide in Christ. So how how are you planning on on doing that? What what have you thought of to to try to remain connected? Lincoln Young: I would say I'm just the biggest thing is taking God with me and not leaving him behind. and knowing that he's gonna change me into a new person and knowing that I have to accept that new person and it's gonna be an amazing person and just taking the faith with me and spreading it there. while I was there on my visit, you know, they have a lot of like FCA stuff, a lot of Bible study groups that they do. They do a lot of it Sunday, they do some on Tuesday, they just have a lot of it. They're all like really built in deep in faith. And my coach found me a good church. I'm excited to go to it next Sunday. I'm gonna see how it is. And I feel like that's where God's sending me. And I'm just gonna continue to stay in my faith and stay rooted in Christ. the whole time there. I know there's gonna be temptations that come my way. That's that's how college is, you know, college isn't gonna be perfect. There's no college in the world where the alcohol or the whatever lust know, vaping er anything that is just not there. There's no no college like that. That's just the college life. That's how our world has unfortunately grown to be. And I just feel like if I just stay true in what I believe and that what God has planned for me and that what's best for me, that I will be able to succeed abundantly and that it will spread to others as well. That those if they try to tempt me in the wrong ways, that I forgive them, but I also help them. That I use God as my foundation to help other people. And that knowing that we don't have to rely, we don't have to have fun by using alcohol. Like God is our fun. He's the way that we live. He's the reason why we live. Devin Davis: Yeah. Lincoln Young: And just giving thanks to him. Devin Davis: Yeah. And that that's I you know, you're talking about temptation. And I when I talk to a lot of my younger guests, I'd like, you know, the the world is such a different place now than when I was growing up. And I and I know every time has its own issues, right? But I mean, just has you know, holding fast, standing against temptation, with just the ability at your fingertip to To look at anything, say anything, do anything on your phone is is really hard. And I and I oftentimes wonder if I grew up now, if I could be as solid as as as you are, or as Gene. what's your key to holding steady and and not allowing yourself to give in to a lot of the the easy stuff, right? The self- instant gratification that the world throws at you these days. Lincoln Young: Right. I just, you know, just steering away it from it. Like the minute I know a lot in Corinthians, it tells us like the minute temptation comes our way, pray on it. Like pray that you stand firm in what is true and what the right things are. with my devotional today, you know, it talked about God's grace and how temptation will try to take God's grace away from us and twist our minds up to think that. It's means something completely different. But knowing that in the end, if we stay firm in God's faith and his glory, that it's just gonna be abundant. And his we can't really put on a scale of how good his grace is because God is just so He's so big and hit like there's no way to put him into like a box to explain it. and knowing that that God has my back and he Has a plan for me in that no matter what people think of me, God will love me. And that's all that matters. Like if they don't like the things I do and things I believe in, if I'm the Jesus freak of the town, then that's okay. God's the one that loves me. Devin Davis: Amen. Lincoln Young: God loves them. And I'm I'm I'm born to love them. Like I I am told by God to love them as He tells us. And we're raised to do this. For God's glory. And I'm I'm not saying that's gonna happen, but like even if the worst case were to happen, like if someone were to not like me for my faith, then I'm just gonna have to sit there and be okay with it. Because at the end of the day, once we get to the day of judgment, it's gonna be me who's gonna be realizing like none of that mattered. And they'll maybe realize along the way or they won't. But in the end, on the day of judgment, none of that's gonna matter. It's all gonna be forgotten about. So it does why why worry about it Devin Davis: That's Lincoln Young: now? Devin Davis: that's right. You know, when you look at the apostles when they were persecuted like they were, and they and they they felt that it was a privilege to be able to suffer for the name of Jesus Christ, which is totally against the mindset of the world nowadays is to think about being persecuted or being n unpopular or or not like or called names simply because of who you believe. but that that means you're doing something right, Lincoln. I mean, if Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: pe I hate to say it, man, if people don't like you and that's the reason, then then that must that's God working in you, right, right. excuse me. So there's kind of joy in that really. And I think that's a hard thing to to to think about, but it's really, really true. Lincoln Young: like I think the best thing to do during that time is just to pray for those people. Like to help them out, not be Devin Davis: Yeah. Lincoln Young: like, okay, I don't want anything to do with you. Like when Matthew, when he and when he was called Levi, when he invited him over invited Jesus over to a dinner with a bunch of sinners, prostitutes and whatnot, a lot of the Pharisees condemned Jesus because he was friends with sinners. And Devin Davis: Center's right. Lincoln Young: Jes Jesus never once said, I don't want anything to do with you because you guys are bad people. He willingly went there so he could help them out and let them understand like we're all born of sinners. We all fall short of the glory of God, but with God's grace and repenting, like we can be made clean and through the blood of Jesus Christ, we're all made clean and we're all defeated. We He defeated sin for us. And I think that's just something that we should also be grateful for. Devin Davis: I think that's that's a great point and that's that's a hard part for me is when people reject me, I take that personal and I I r you know it's and so then I I tend to to judge or get angry when I have to realize they're not rejecting me, they're rejecting Christ. And and I should be praying for their souls. because man, I I hate to see what happens, like you said, on judgment day for those who reject and rebel, disobedient to God. And so, yeah, that's that's a good point. And and that's hard for us to do. But like you just said, as I looked at that verse and I was thinking about it, Matthew five forty-four, but I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. is is the the key right there. And like again, you know, a lot of those things go against our our complete natural response. To those situations. I mean, as as I've grown in my faith, I think there there's a lot of that. Like this is the way that I the flesh of Devin Davis would respond, but this is the way the heart of Devin Davis, changed by the gospel, should respond, right? And it's and Lincoln Young: Mm-hmm. Devin Davis: and we it's never gonna be easy. but that's that's hopefully what w we're growing in that as as we're growing in our faith, really. So Lincoln Young: Yeah. And I like how Jesus Devin Davis: That's it, that's a good point. Lincoln Young: right. And I like how Jesus tells us like our inward self is changed outwardly through the blood of Christ. That like we are renewed day by day and that our past self is something we should not reflect on. It's something we should leave behind. but we can't just sweep it under the rug as well. We gotta be thankful that we're not that person anymore and that we're a new person, but knowing that the person we are right now is gonna change again. 'Cause I'm not perfect. I don't want it to make it seen sound like I'm perfect and that I do all the right things for Christ and whatnot. I sin. I still do. Like that's just how we are. But I I mean I trip and fall. That's how it is. We're all we're all gonna do that no matter how old we get, no matter how much it seems like we know God and we know the Bible, whether we've read it front to back, that doesn't mean we're not gonna fall. Because temptations will come our way and we'll Devin Davis: Yeah. Amen. Lincoln Young: fall into it. But we just gotta know that God forgives us. if we repent in the right way and we try to change it. Devin Davis: Yeah. I've I'm reading a book. one of my favorite pastors is a guy named Joe B. Martin. and and he r has written several books. One of them the w that I'm reading right now is Run Over by the Grace Train. and it just talks about he I mean, I'm like halfway through it and and I all he's talking about is God's grace. How how it n there's no end to it and and it's greater than anything that we could imagine. And and it just has made me really, really think about that word because we use that a lot without really thinking about its meaning. but I mean it's his grace that gets us saved and it's his grace that sustains us. And it's his grace that is going to get us to where we need to be at at the last day that we're on this earth or he he comes back. And so I think we can't ever really completely grasp what that is. but it's It's what gives you and I life and hope. and and eternal life is the grace of God. So that's that's a really good to think about that. Lincoln Young: Amen. Devin Davis: are you talking to a little bit about it, are you a week away from going to school? Are you at all wrestling with the fact that you're not gonna be sleeping in that bedroom very much f from from here on out and just kind of the whole family situation, friend situation? how are you feeling about that? Lincoln Young: Yeah, it's it's a little tough. This week has this week's probably gonna be the toughest one, but you know, like going in the mountains when I went on that trip, that feel like that was a time God allowed me to realize that's all gonna be okay. And I just kinda took a lot of w took a lot of the weight off my shoulders. But you know, I'm excited, but I'm also sad for the people I'll be leaving behind. But at the same time I'll be back. I'm not gone forever, you know. I'll be back. My family's gonna be Coming to watch me. They're my biggest supporters. Gene, one of my best friends, you know, Weston, Maddox, you know, I'm going with Maddox. He's gonna be my roommate and just all those friends that I have. Like, I'm not leaving them forever. Like, well, I'll see them eventually and stuff. So that brings me joy. But at the same time, you know, it's not gonna be coming back every weekend. It'll be coming back every few months. So yeah, it's a little sad I won't get to see them and stuff. And like see them every day in school like I have been used to for the past four years. But you know, I'll find new people that I'll see every day. Devin Davis: Yeah. Amen. New chapter in life and the chance to develop friends that'll last a lifetime. and and heading to college, do you have your eyes set on a major or what you might want to be or do when you're out of college? Lincoln Young: Yes. well it's crazy. both me and Maddox have kind of the same thing. we're both majoring in physical therapy. I wanna be I would like to be a physical therapist. my plan right now is to finish pre physical therapy school on the program that Shatner has, and then after that go to Idaho State or the U of U for physical therapy school. if it all works out and it's all God's plan, whatever it is. but that's kind of the What I'm looking at right now and I would like to do that. I like helping people out, like being involved with people and understanding more of kind of like being in sports. So understanding more of the body, knowing how to help it and stay healthy with just performing to my best ability. So I feel like that was like the best option for me. And I got to job shadow a lot of physical therapy places, places and I I liked it a lot. I enjoyed it a lot. Devin Davis: It's it's always amazing to me. I think that's kind of a a natural fit for for athletes. It seems like a lot of athletes make good physical therapists because obviously you you may have had physical therapy or you know, just knowing w how the body works and what you have to go through, especially in wrestling. Like your body's not supposed to bend that way most of the time. but Lincoln Young: Right. Devin Davis: so you'll you'll have a a a good background going in into that. Do you think do you yeah, I know it's hard to it's a hard cause it's a ways down the road. gu there are a lot of different places where you can y be a physical therapist. Do you have an area that like maybe you're focused on more than other or do you just would you like to just be a you know just work in a physical therapy clinic and just do general physical therapy? Lincoln Young: I haven't really thought too much on the kind of the exact area, but like I you know, I would Devin Davis: Yeah. Yeah. Lincoln Young: like to do maybe have my own business maybe along the way or do some me and Max have talked about obviously, like you said, it's a long time down the road, so you know, we can't say like this is gonna happen and like it might not happen. He might go this way, I might go this way, we might Devin Davis: Yeah. Lincoln Young: both go this way and it might be something else. But we would like to start our own business down the road and work together. Whether that's wherever we end up for physical therapy school or we go down to Utah, s we s come back to Wyoming and find a place. but I feel like for me now, I've I probably shouldn't worry as much about it because God w is finding a place for me, whether it's for the physical therapy or maybe God's gonna put me through this physical therapy program for a year or two and then I have to change my major because I might find love in something else. Like I feel like I just gotta kinda leave it up to God and It's his plan, but also have in the back of my mind and be prepared for what might happen if this all works out. Devin Davis: Yep. Right. That goes back to sports and to you know, wrestling a lot is there's a lot that you can't control in this sport and what you have to focus on is what you can't control. And that's I mean, that's that same same focus that it sounds like you have is and that's me too, man. I I tell you that what I'm doing right now, I'm I'm blessed. It took me thirty years to get back to to Riverton and my hometown. I'm grateful I'm here. But I I didn't ever really wanna come back here, which is the crazy thing. I had a whole different idea of what I wanted to do. Well, God blew that up. and and that was like, Okay, God you know, I think I'm really at great at making plans for my life. No, I'm not. You know, you are the best at making those plans. So I just have to trust you through it all. And I think that's the best thing that that you can do for sure. So Yeah, that you you've yeah, you've had a great career, man. I I I Lincoln Young: Appreciate. Devin Davis: w you know, I like I said, I didn't really get to know you unfortunately until this year and had just grown really close with you you and your dad and with Gene and have been blessed to to get to know you guys and just admire your faith and where you're at and and just always always pray for you and we'll be praying for you. so it's it's exciting to see what your future holds. I can't wait to to see what happens to Lincoln Young. Man, I I keep track of Shadron State Wrestling all Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: the time. Coach Hunter just texted him the other day and so it's it'll be exciting. But that that's kind of the business side of things. What what is the the fun side of Lincoln Young? and I and we d talked about a little bit of that with your with your journey into the Wind Rivers. But what what do you like to do when you're not wrestling or not being s serious kind of thing. Lincoln Young: Right. I'm a big outdoors person. I I love it. That's all I I do that a lot of fly fishing. I'm big into fly fishing. Me and Weston go fly fishing a lot. I like hunting. I like going out and hanging out with friends. You know, me and Gene, we sometimes he comes by random days, I'll be s sit in my room and he'll just call me and say, Hey, I'm here. I'm like, Okay. And we'll just drive around, find something to do Devin Davis: Yeah. Lincoln Young: and whether that's go spread the gospel, whether that's just walk around to Walmart, whether that's eat food, we probably eat too much food sometimes, which we spent too much money on food. That's we gotta stop. But we're actually tomorrow we're going over to Gene's house and we're gonna cook chicken fajitas. We're gonna try it on our own. We're gonna like try to make it some fancy thing. But I don't know how I don't know how it's gonna go. Whether we might blow the whole house up, we might set it on fire. Or probably not the best combination to do that with, but I guess we'll see. But I just I like hanging out with friends and just Doing a lot of fun things. I don't really play video games. I think I stopped doing that once I got into high school 'cause I just think there's a lot more fun things to do. Devin Davis: Right. I mean yeah, you're inside all the time. Go outside, right? And enjoy Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: enjoy creation. So what the the hard part about it is, I mean, moving to Shatron, there's not gonna be a ton of fly fishing opportunities. I think the Black Hill has some areas and you Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: have to work a little harder to to find areas to go do that. Have you have you searched at all? Have you looked in that area for any opportunities to Flyfish. Lincoln Young: I've I've done my research so much. I have so many pinpoints on some places I'm gonna try whenever I have free time. Like they have a lot of good walleye and bass fishing there and they actually have some good rainbow trout fishing there, but it's kinda getting close to the Pine Ridge reservation. I don't plan on going there though, 'cause I just I would like Devin Davis: Ha ha. Lincoln Young: to say who I am, but and I don't wanna like intrude in into their land and whatnot, but I I found some places that I know have some good fish 'cause I have a buddy up there who's you might know him, White McDermott. You might know him. He he's he's big Devin Davis: Uh-huh. Mm-hmm. From Thermopolis? Lincoln Young: yeah, big into fly fishing. and he he does some bass fly fishing there, which I've I think is pretty fun. It's kinda like yeah. Devin Davis: That would be cool. Yeah. Never never did that. There's a really cool fly shop. I think it's still there in in ra right downtown Rapid City. So if you guys are ever in Rapid, there's a cool fly shop and they can give you a lot of information. But the the the Rapid Creek that runs through Rapid City actually has some pretty good fishing on it. what a lot of my friends tell me. So that's that's an area you'll have to look into. And I think there's a lot of places that are pretty easy to access. The only bad part about it compared to Wyoming is there's you know, a lot of pressure on on a lot of those fish. So you have to be you know, you have to be pretty good at at what you're doing. But there there are some areas, especially like, you know, up around Custer and that area, some lakes and stuff stuff like that. Now here's here's a little secret and I don't know if it still fishes well, but If you go on the White River, which is kind of out by Crawford, there's some walk in areas there that used to have quite a few fish on it and were pretty easy to fish. It's not a very big, very big river. It's really a creek. but it has brook trout, no, not brook trout, it has brown trout and cutthroat, but it tends to get flooded out if a a lot washed out and so then it has to build back up. But that's where I used to go. fish when i needed my fly fish bug you can you can get out there in probably twenty twenty five minutes or so from from school so Lincoln Young: Perfect. Devin Davis: the white river if you want to head out that way so that's my my secret yeah I was I was Lincoln Young: White River. I will write that down for sure. Yeah, I've I have grandparents that live up in Rapid City, so that'll be nice. I have grandparents that up there, so I'll probably be visiting a lot and Devin Davis: yeah, the Rapid Creek. There you go. Rapid City. Lincoln Young: fishing. Devin Davis: Rapid City is awesome. I hope excuse me. Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: I think that's probably one of my favorite parts of living in Shadowin is Rapid Lincoln Young: Whoa Devin Davis: is a nice size and town and good places Lincoln Young: Pretty close. Devin Davis: to eat, good places to shop close, all that good stuff. So that'll be that'll be cool. So yeah, I I'm I'm like I said, I'm excited and I bet you are too and it's kind of nice to have this chance to go on and and like you like you said, you know, the hard part is I and I don't know if you feel this way, but you know, like kind of a tough way to end your high school career. And it's kind of nice to be able to hopefully redeem yourself a little bit, right? I mean, you've already redeemed yourself in in God's eyes. He's forgiven you, you've repented. I mean, it it is what it is, and and now Lincoln has to learn from that and and hopefully that. you know, avoid that down the road. But man, to be able to to continue on and to push yourself even a little bit, well, a lot more than you do than you did in high school is that that's gotta be pretty exciting. I bet you're you're pumped to get in the room once you get up to Shattering. Do you guys start workouts pretty quick? Lincoln Young: Yeah, we start like our official preseason a week after school starts. But, you know, the day I get there Friday when we're moving in, when I find free time and parents aren't doing anything, they probably head to the hotel or whatnot. I'll probably get in the room with some buddies and get to work. Devin Davis: Yeah. Yeah. Wrestlers never quit or never stop wrestling, do ya? Has wrestling always Lincoln Young: Yep. Yep. That is true. Devin Davis: been s kind of natural for you? Lincoln Young: No, no. I kinda started actually pretty late. I wasn't not the kid who started at like three or four years old. I started about sixth grade, seventh grade. I did like a Devin Davis: wow. Lincoln Young: year I did like a year of Pee Wee. I think it's like a month of Pee Wee honestly in fourth grade. Didn't like it. But then I came back to it 'cause I saw my buddies were doing it and ever since then I've just been up and I've found a passion for it and love it. So yeah. Devin Davis: What is the one thing I guess putting you on the spot here, but what is the one thing you l like most about the sport of wrestling? Lincoln Young: things it teaches you and the person it builds you to be, like the overcoming challenges and things in your life, the work ethic. Told I'm crazy a lot and I don't wanna make it sound like I'm this b this person who's like really good at everything, does whatever, like this raw, raw guy. But I like doing a lot of hard things that like make me hurt almost. Like I ran a 16 mile run. I woke up, came back from work one day, and I was like, I want to run a green river. Green River's about 13 miles away, but I got up in the morning at like four in the morning. I called my dad, I was like, Hey, go to Green River real quick. I'm gonna meet you there and run. He's like, All right. And I ran up our White Mountain, and I w went across this road sixteen miles and two hours and I just I loved it. I was like, Yeah, I wanna do this again. So I plan on going down and back sometime. Devin Davis: Ha ha ha. Lincoln Young: I do a lot of MRFs, the mile, a hundred pull-ups, two hundred pull-ups, three hundred squats, a mile. I do that like with a weighted vest and I like just I like doing things that are hard. You know, I work at a tire shop, and a mechanic shop. So I flipping tires, throwing tires all day and I just feel like it's fun. I don't know why I even my co works tell me I'm psycho, but I mean it's fun to me and I feel like that's what wrestling has brought me, a good mentality on always wanting to get better. Devin Davis: Yeah. Yeah, you you completely go against unfortunately b basically our society nowadays. you know, Lincoln Young: Yeah. Devin Davis: hard things is is not where most people like to be. but I and man, I I admire that because really what's the most rewarding thing in our lives? It's not when it's easy, it's when it's hard and we can Lincoln Young: Mm-hmm. Devin Davis: endure it. So I mean, that's that's really cool. so Yeah, that's that's great. I I mean, so that'll be a great chance for you to kind of take that up another notch and and take that super hard work to another level. Cause to be successful in college, which I know you know, it's it's it's on a completely different level, whether it's at D one or at D two, man, yeah, yeah, you're gonna you're gonna have to work for that. So, and I think you have definitely what you n what it takes to be successful. so I I'm I'm excited for that. Well, do you have anything, you know, before we pray here, I always just say, Hey, guest, what do you have on your heart? What do you have on your mind? How do you want to close things? anything we didn't cover that you thought of at all? Lincoln Young: no, I'm just full of gratitude right now. Like I know I reached out to you, seeing if this was something we could do and 'cause I would like to if like the best thing to do is share my testimony and see if it impacts someone and you know, just being able to have a conversation with someone like you that I look up to. It just I'm grateful for it and f fit perfectly with my schedule 'cause I'm always busy and with this packing I Gotta clean this room up. It's I'm glad the camera's facing like this because if it was facing that way, I I would tell you to turn my camera off. That is bad. But I probably after this interview I'll get to packing and stuff. Cause I start w back up with work Devin Davis: Ha ha ha. Lincoln Young: tomorrow. But I'm just grateful what's going on right now. Devin Davis: yeah. Amen. Lincoln Young: My life is. I feel like this allowed me to kind of express what's on my mind as well and Get some weight off my shoulders by having this interview and allowing other people to do this and Devin Davis: Yeah. That's that's what that's kind of w that's funny that you say that, Lincoln, is like that's that's a lot of the reason why I wanted to to do this podcast because there are a lot of great stories out out out there among athletes, among coaches, that people don't really get to hear. And and it's really worth a lot and and God uses your life to tell a story. And so this is an opportunity for you to share that story. And and I think that is I I'm super glad that you wanted to do this. And I think God is gonna use it to to help others to go through some things, some struggles that you've gone through. And that's that's the great thing is he never wastes any of our lives at all. Every second that we're alive counts to the kingdom of God. And so I I'm grateful for that. So sweet. So Lincoln Young: Me too. Devin Davis: I'm gonna go ahead and and pray and and for you. and for your journey and just thank you so much for spending time with us. I'll go ahead and take my cap off here. all right, let's pray. Father, we just thank you for Lincoln's life and for this podcast and how you are glorified through it. God, we it it it's it's just so encouraging to see how you work and how you move differently from person to person in each of our lives, in each of the situations that we're going through. And thank you for for Lincoln and for just giving him. Heart that desires to work hard, not only physically, but spiritually also. Father, that that he is able to run the race, run to win, like it says. Father, give him the strength and the focus to do that well when he goes to to college, among all the temptation that he's going to endure. Father, I just pray that you keep putting on his heart that Jesus is better. Jesus is better than anything that the world puts us puts in front of us. thank you also for just what he learned through the losses it in his t in time in his during his time in high school wrestling, especially that senior loss father. And and yeah, it's really easy to be hard on ourselves when we do things in a way that we know don't honor you. But Father, you welcome us back with open arms and you do not hold that against us. Your grace is sufficient. And I just I'm just encouraged to hear how how Lincoln's worked through that and how you've helped him work through that. and now it's on to the next stage, Father. So just pray blessing around him as he travels to Shattering State, as he begins his college career, and then whatever is down the road. So thank you for our friendship. I'm just grateful for that and that he's part of my life and and and his dad Tyson is too. So we love you. We thank you for your son and it's your in your glorious name we pray. Amen. Lincoln Young: Amen. Thank you, Devin. Devin Davis: You betcha. this was this is awesome. Lee can I it's it's funny because I think most of our listeners can tell when I have kind of a personal relationship with my guest because it's easy to easier to come up with questions because I have a little inside information, right? But this Lincoln Young: Right. Devin Davis: has been been a really awesome conversation. So I I hope you had fun with it as well. Lincoln Young: I did and I appreciate the opportunity and thank you so much and I will be sure to keep you updated on how my things are going, send you some gear and whatnot. Devin Davis: Yeah. I might have to make a trip with your dad one of these weekends. So that'd be that'd be fun to do. So Lincoln Young: Yep. I'm sure he would love that. I'm sure he would love that. Devin Davis: All right. Well have a great day. Have a great week. I know you got a lot to do, so you betcha. We'll talk to you later. Lincoln Young: Thank you. Appreciate it. Okay, sounds good. See ya. Devin Davis: So folks, that was Lincoln Young and a great young man and just awesome to he hear him be honest from his heart about some of the struggles he's had, some of the mistakes that he's made, father, because y you know, we all make those mistakes and we all have those hard times and we can't run from them and we're not told to run from them. We're told to run to you because you always forgive. It's hard to imagine, right? We tend to as humans be very limited in our forgiveness. I'm working on that. but God, you you never quit forgiving. And and we're just grateful for that and grateful for that in and Lincoln's life as well. So that's bit that was a great interview. Follow Shadron State Wrestling and look for Lincoln Young. I think he's gonna do great things there. So last thing that I just wanted to say before I sign off is I just wanted to give a huge shout out To the breadboard of Lander. Shane Springston at the breadboard was more than kind. We had an FCA wrestling camp in Lander a week ago. We our guest clinicians were Alex Marinelli and Gabe Arnold and Caleb Young, and we had a hundred kids from around the state, even a couple from out of state that showed up for that. And it was a it was a blessing. So I the Lander Breadboard donated the the sandwiches for for both days. And so I mean that was a huge blessing. And I I just wanted to to let you guys know that when you're in lander, head over to the breadboard and tell them that Devin from FCA sent sent you over there. And I I I know I'll keep telling you about that, but I just wanted to give a huge shout out to Shane at the end of this because that was that was so more than kind and we're more than thankful for that. What a what an awesome camp. made possible by the by the volunteer of a lot of people, by the donation of a lot of people, and certainly blessed with that. So yeah, great, great interview.
