Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to the Daily Writer, where we help writers become authors of their own lives.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: If you've ever felt stuck as a perfectionist, today's podcast is definitely for you.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Pretty frequently I hear some version of this question.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Hey Kent, I have a hard time finishing any piece of writing because I'm always in editing mode.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I feel stuck because I'm always trying to make everything perfect.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Can you give me some advice?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Well, we all know that writers are famously perfectionistic.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: In fact, one of the biggest conundrums that we face is trying to make everything quote unquote perfect before we hit publish.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And here's a simple solution that's really helped me a lot over the years.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And that is aim for doing B-level work.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And let me explain what I mean by that.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And I'll give you an example.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: One of the reasons that I send a daily email is that it forces me to let go of being a perfectionist.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: If I tried to make every email a masterpiece, I'd never get anything done.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: But by publishing every day, I've learned that consistency beats perfection every time.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: To put it another way, the cumulative effect of sending a quote-unquote pretty good daily email is far more than trying to produce one quote-unquote amazing email every week or every month.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, the truth is that you can always find another sentence to improve or another paragraph to tweak, but at some point you have to decide that your work is good enough and put it out there into the world.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: In fact, 100 pretty good pieces of writing will do far more for your growth and for your business than 10 quote-unquote perfect ones.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Plus, it's almost impossible to objectively judge your own work anyway.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Your B level work is probably somebody else's A level work.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And the more that you write and publish, the better that you'll get.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: So don't aim for perfection.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Instead, aim to publish.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: The more times you go to bat, the more often you'll hit a home run.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks for listening today.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Keep writing, keep showing up, and I'll see you tomorrow.
