- 0:15reading from various books on Christmas. Your reader today is Diane.
- 0:22Our first book is called The Christmas Cat and it
- 0:25was published by Dial Books for Young Readers and Imprint
- 0:29of Penguin Group Incorporated. It has a copyright year of
- 0:36twenty thirteen and the author of the book is Marianne McDonald.
- 0:41Jesus was beautiful like all babies, and like all babies,
- 0:45he cried the ninety was born. Nothing Mary did could
- 0:49comfort him. She wrapped him in a warm blanket, She
- 0:53fed him, she robbed him. Still he kept on crying.
- 0:59Every animal is table tried to turn to soothe him.
- 1:03Doves fluttered down from the rafters suddenly on the creaky
- 1:06stable door. They cooed and cooed, but they could not
- 1:10stop the baby from crying. The cow moved low, as
- 1:15she had done for her very own calf, but Jesus
- 1:19cried still louder. The donkey brayed a lullaby, but that
- 1:24made Jesus cry loudest of all. Then a curious kitten
- 1:30crept out of the shadows. Stepped by careful step, he
- 1:34edged towards Jesus, reaching Mary's feet, he crouched, wiggled his back,
- 1:39and pounced lightly onto her lap. Rubbing his tiny nose
- 1:43against the back of Mary's hand. The kitten showed that
- 1:46he too wanted his turn to soothe the baby. Mary
- 1:49opened her shawl. The kitten edged in and nuzzled Jesus's neck.
- 1:54Then he began to purr, a calm, contented purr that
- 1:58came from deep inside. Jesus's tiny hand touched the kitten,
- 2:04and his crime grew softer and softer and softer. Soon
- 2:09it stopped. The purring faded away too, and in the
- 2:12blessed silence that followed, every tired creature in the stable
- 2:17was soon sleeping soundly in the starlight. The babies grew
- 2:22close as two creatures can be. Before long, the kitten
- 2:26became a cat. Jesus watched him as he chased butterflies
- 2:30in the tall grass and climbed high in the fig tree.
- 2:33And when Mary put Jesus down to rest in his cradle,
- 2:37it was the cat's turn to watch over the baby
- 2:39and purr him to sleep. One day, an angel came
- 2:43to warn Joseph that terrible King Herod was looking for
- 2:47the baby Jesus. Jealous Herod had heard rumors about Jesus
- 2:51that this baby would one day be King Herod's soldiers,
- 2:55the angel said, were racing towards Bethlehem, hoping to find
- 2:59the baby Jesus and destroy him. To escape, the little
- 3:03family would have to flee on their donkey into Egypt.
- 3:07Ride away be safest to travel quietly at night, in
- 3:11the darkness, when the soldiers could not see them. Hurry, Mary,
- 3:15said Joseph. We must leave now, this very night. Rushing,
- 3:19Mary and Joseph packed and loaded what little they could
- 3:23on their donkey. Where is Jesus's cat, Mary asked, just
- 3:28before the sun went down. We must find him. So
- 3:31Mary and Joseph combed through the tall grass, searched the
- 3:34shadows near the fire, and looked high in the branches
- 3:37of the fig tree. But the cat was nowhere to
- 3:40be found. We can't leave him behind, cried Mary. We must,
- 3:45said Joseph. It's too dangerous to stay here even one
- 3:49day longer. So, just as the sun set on the
- 3:51hills behind Bethlehem. The little family set off on their journey.
- 3:57The desert air was chilly. Mary held Jesus close, hoping
- 4:02the rocking gate of a donkey would lull him to sleep.
- 4:06But Jesus needed his cat. He clinched his small fist
- 4:09and screamed. Campfires glowed on the nearby hillside. Were Hairds
- 4:15soldiers sheltering there with their swords. What would they do
- 4:18if they heard Jesus's christ? I wish that cat was
- 4:22with us, Mary whispered to Joseph, But Joseph only nodded,
- 4:27his eyes constantly scanning the horizon. But the cat was
- 4:33with them after all. To make sure he wasn't left behind,
- 4:36he had hidden in the basket, tied to the donkey's
- 4:39warm flank. When he heard Jesus crying, he woke up
- 4:42and began to well. Jesus shrieked with delight, reaching toward
- 4:47the basket with chubby arms. With one strong leap, the
- 4:50cat jumped into them. Sh sh whispered Mary as she
- 4:58cuddled the squirming, licking, loving friends together. When at last
- 5:02the two settled down, the cat again began to purr,
- 5:06the rithmatic rumbling as always soothed the baby, and Jesus
- 5:10fell sound asleep inside mary Shaw. He and his pet
- 5:14curled closer together, keeping each other warm, as the donkey
- 5:18carried them far from Haired's soldiers and their awful swords,
- 5:22far away to the safe land of Egypt. Love had
- 5:26saved them. The cat loved the baby Jesus as only
- 5:30a child's cat can, and Jesus loved him back is
- 5:33only a cat's child can. For all the cats and
- 5:37all the children everywhere, they were meant for each other
- 5:40from the very first Christmas night in the bright starlight.
- 5:46Our next story is called Toot and Puddle. I'll be
- 5:49Home for Christmas was published by Little Brown and Company,
- 5:54and it has a copyright ear of two thousand and one.
- 5:58It was written by Holly Hobby. Dear, my dear Toots,
- 6:04said the ancient ant, this is for you. It is
- 6:08my lucky nut back in Woodcock Pocket. Puddle couldn't wait
- 6:13for Toot any longer. Christmas is only a few days away,
- 6:17and there was everything to do. Puddle signed all the
- 6:22cards married Christmas and Puddle he would have to wait
- 6:25until Toot returned before he could mail them too. Puddle
- 6:31and Woodcockpocket dot com subject Christmas putts Edningburg is having
- 6:37an ice storm. All flights delay, but don't decorate the
- 6:41tree without me. I'm on my way home somehow, your
- 6:45pal Toot p s, I'm full of Christmas spirits. Meanwhile
- 6:51at Woodcock Pocket, fruitcake is one of Toot's favorite things,
- 6:55said Puddle. How many do you think we need? Tulip asked,
- 6:59Christmas was only one day away. How can two possibly
- 7:03get home in time? Puddle said, he has to, said Tulip,
- 7:08jingle bells, jingle bells all the way. When Toot finally
- 7:14arrived in Boston, it was snowing and very late. Everything
- 7:17had come to a stop, even trains and buses and
- 7:21taxi camps. I promise, Puddle, I'll be home tonight too,
- 7:25thought Toot. Hiked far from the city. The night was
- 7:29cold and the snow was deep. He trudged on until
- 7:32at last he could go no further. Toot hugged himself
- 7:36to keep warm. There in his pocket, he felt the
- 7:39lucky nut. He'd forgotten all about that special gift. It's
- 7:43Christmas Eve, he thought, I wish I was home and
- 7:46wood Cock Pocket. It's snowing so hard. Puddle said. It's beautiful,
- 7:53said Tulip. If only Toots were here. Toot was startled
- 7:58by a tinkle jingling sound. As he peered into the dark,
- 8:02he saw faint light coming toward him. It twinkled and
- 8:06flickered in the snowy night. Where are you headed, Laddie
- 8:12woodcock Pocket, said Toots. Miles and miles from here. Climb aboard.
- 8:17The driver said, I know the way. The first snowfall
- 8:21had turned wood Cockpocket into a sparkling wonderland. Everything was ready,
- 8:26everything was perfect. But where was his friends? Then I'm home?
- 8:34You are You're finally here two Tota's friends of his
- 8:37adventure and how he finally got back to Woodcock Pocket.
- 8:41I love the slave rid, he said, felt like we
- 8:43were flying. I wonder who the driver was, said Puddle.
- 8:47Let's hang this on the tree, said Tout. What is that?
- 8:50Tuli asked. It's beautiful, said Poddle. This is great great
- 8:56ant PEG's lucky nut to Toad them, it wasn't easy
- 9:01to follow. Asleep on Christmas Eve, Toot Puddle said, do
- 9:05you hear a jingling sound? Too? Listened? Maybe? I think
- 9:09I definitely hear something, said Puddle, And I think we
- 9:12better go to sleep, Toot said. Right away. Puddle agreed.
- 9:16I'll count to twenty before Puddle count to ten. He
- 9:20and his friend were fast asleep. When they wake up,
- 9:24it will be Christmas. Our next book is titled four
- 9:29Friends at Christmas and it was published by Simon and
- 9:32Schuster Books for Young Readers and Imprint of Simon and
- 9:36Schuster's Children Publishing Division. It has a copyright year of
- 9:40nineteen seventy seven to two thousand and two and it
- 9:44was written by Tommy Depollo. It was wintertime and most
- 9:49animals were getting ready for the Christmas holidays, but some
- 9:53are getting ready for a long, long rest. Mister Frog
- 9:56always slept right through the winter most for But even
- 10:01though he always had a nice long rest and didn't
- 10:04have to bother with the snow and coat, he always
- 10:06missed Christmas, and Christmas always seemed such a joyous time
- 10:11of year. His three friends told him how wonderful it
- 10:14was to celebrate the happy holiday. Oh, Froggy, you would
- 10:17love it. Turkey, plum pudding, cany canes, lots of good
- 10:21things to eat, said Mistress Pig, Candles, angels, and Christmas trees,
- 10:27said Missy Cat, Yule logs, Christmas carols, and Santa Claus,
- 10:32added Master Dog. So mister Frog decided to stay up
- 10:35and celebrate Christmas too. He kept awake all through November.
- 10:40By December first, mister Frog was busy making Christmas list,
- 10:44playing a Christmas dinner menu, writing down as Christmas cards,
- 10:48and thinking about how he would decorate his house with
- 10:51holly and greens. And since mister Frog had never had
- 10:54a Christmas before, he wanted everything to be absolutely perfect.
- 11:00Mister Frog couldn't believe how exciting Christmas time was. But
- 11:04after all his planning and list making, he was very tired.
- 11:08Christmas is a lot of work, thought mister Frog. I
- 11:12think I'll just take a tiny nap here on the
- 11:14couch before I go to the store, he said. Mister
- 11:19Frog had a nice long nap and it was just
- 11:21what he needed for a busy day of shopping. But
- 11:24when the church bells rang out de nom d non,
- 11:28mister Frog jumped with a start. Goodness croaked mister Frog.
- 11:33I hope I haven't overslept, but he had. There were
- 11:37no turkeys left, no cranberries, no candy canes, no Christmas wreaths.
- 11:42In fact, all the stores were closed. Mister Frog couldn't
- 11:46even find a Christmas tree, and it was Christmas Eve,
- 11:51Poor Froggy. Mister Frog couldn't believe yet missed Christmas again.
- 11:56All of his hard work had been for nothing. Now
- 11:59he had no Christmas dinner, no Christmas decorations, and no
- 12:03Christmas tree. As he sat alone in his house, mister
- 12:07Frog wondered this three best friends were celebrating Christmas. All
- 12:11of a sudden, the door bell rang, dan a ling
- 12:14and mister Frog went to Sue who was there? Ho
- 12:17ho ho, Merry Christmas, said Santa Claus. Mister Frog was shocked.
- 12:23Santa Claus had just arrived at his house with a
- 12:26beautiful Christmas tree just for him. He invited Santa Claus
- 12:31inside and was just about to say thank you when
- 12:34the door bell rang again. Dane a ling ho ho ho,
- 12:39Merry Christmas, said Santa Claus. Mister Frog couldn't believe his eyes.
- 12:44There at the door was another Santa Claus with another
- 12:48tree just for him. Mister Frog invited the second Santa
- 12:53Claus in and was about to shut the door when
- 12:56the bell rang again. Dan a ling ho ho oh hoo,
- 13:00Merry Christmas, said Santa Claus. Mister Frog opened the door
- 13:05and there was a third Santa Claus with a third
- 13:08Christmas tree just for him. Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas,
- 13:15mister Frog said to each Santa. And Surprise, surprise, surprise,
- 13:20said Missy Cat, Master Dog and Mistress Pig, taking off
- 13:24their Santa hats and beards. Mister Frog could not believe it.
- 13:29The three mystery Santas were actually his three best friends
- 13:33coming to wish him a merry Christmas. Let's hang up
- 13:36our stockings, said Master Dog. Here's the plum pudding, said
- 13:41Mistress Pig, and we four friends will be celebrating Christmas together,
- 13:47said Missy Caat. This is the best Christmas ever, said
- 13:52mister Frog as he gathered around his three friends and
- 13:55his three Christmas trees, and all four friends began to
- 13:59sing islent Night, Holy Night, all is calm and all
- 14:03is bright, And because mister Frog was there this time,
- 14:07it was indeed the best Christmas ever. Our next book
- 14:13is called The Night Before Christmas and it was published
- 14:18by Imagining Published in Corporation. This version is a copyright
- 14:25of twenty ten and it was written by Clement C. Moore.
- 14:33Twas the night before Christmas, went all through the house.
- 14:37Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The
- 14:40stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes
- 14:44the Saint Nicholas soon would be there. The children will
- 14:48nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar
- 14:52plums danced in their heads. And Mom and her kerchief,
- 14:57and I, in my cap had just said that our
- 14:59brain for a long winter snap went out on the lawn.
- 15:03There arose such a clatter, A sprang from my bed
- 15:06to see what was the matter. Away to the window.
- 15:10I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters, and
- 15:13threw up the sash. The moon was on the on
- 15:17the breast of the new fall, and snow gave the
- 15:19luster of midday. Two objects below. When what to my
- 15:23wondering eyes should appear but a miniature sleigh, in ate
- 15:27tiny reindeer, with the little old driver. So lively and
- 15:31quick I knew in a moment it must be Saint Nick.
- 15:35More rapid than eagles. His coursers they came, and he
- 15:38whistled and shouted in all then and called them by name,
- 15:44now dasher, now dancer, now praying sir now vixen on,
- 15:48comet on, cupid on donner, and blisten to the top
- 15:51of the porch, to the top of the wall. Now
- 15:54dash away, dash away, dash away, all as dry leaves
- 16:00before the wild heard can fly when they meet with
- 16:03an obstacle. Mount to the sky. So up to the
- 16:06housetop the coursers they flew with a sleigh full of toys,
- 16:10and Saint Nicholas too. And then a twinkling I heard
- 16:14on the roof, the prancing and pine of each little hoof.
- 16:19As I drew in my hand and was turning around
- 16:22down the chimney, Saint Nicholas came with a bound. He
- 16:25was dressed on in fur from his head to his foot,
- 16:28and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
- 16:32A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
- 16:35and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
- 16:38His eyes, how they twinkled, His dimples, how merry, his
- 16:42cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry. His
- 16:46droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and
- 16:49the beer on his chin was as white as the snow.
- 16:53The stump of a pipe he held tight in his
- 16:55teeth and the smoke and encircled his head like a wreath.
- 17:00He had a broad face and a little round belly
- 17:02that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
- 17:06He was chubby and plump, a right sholly odelf. And
- 17:10I laughed when I saw him in spite of myself.
- 17:13A wink of his eye and a twist of his
- 17:15head soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
- 17:19He spoke not a word, but went straight to his
- 17:22work and filled all the stockings. Then turned with a jerk,
- 17:26and laying his finger aside of his nose, and giving
- 17:29a nod of the chimney, he rose. He sprang to
- 17:33his slate, his teen, He gave a whistle, and away
- 17:36they all flew like the down of a thistle. By
- 17:39I heard him exclaim, he drove out of sight, merried
- 17:44Christmas to all, and to all a good night. Our
- 17:49next book is titled mape On and Willow's Christmas Tree,
- 17:53and it is a Nancy Paulson book which is an
- 17:58imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, and it has a
- 18:02kipy right year of twenty sixteen. The author is Lori
- 18:07Nichols Maple and Willow loved winter. Winter brought snow and
- 18:13also Christmas. Getting ready for Christmas hard work. Maple and
- 18:17Willow didn't mind. This year, Maple and Willow were getting
- 18:22a real Christmas tree. Choosing the right tree was the
- 18:26hardest work of all. But when the work was done,
- 18:29the girls were convinced their Christmas tree was the best
- 18:33Christmas tree in the whole wide world. The tree just
- 18:38fit inside their door. It's perfect, said Willow. I'm so
- 18:42glad we got rid of our fake tree, and it's
- 18:44my year to put the star on top. You look
- 18:47like Rudolph, said Willow. Why is your nose so red?
- 18:51Uh cut Maple sneezed all afternoon. Oh no, maybe you
- 18:58are a lurgy to the Christmas tree, Willow said, I
- 19:01hope not, Maple said, But when the girls went outside
- 19:05to play, Maple stopped sneezing. Back inside the house, Maple
- 19:10sneezing started all over again. She really was allergic to
- 19:14the Christmas tree, so the tree could not stay inside.
- 19:18At least we have an outside tree, said Maple. I
- 19:21wish you weren't allergic to Christmas, said Willow. I'm not
- 19:25allergic to Christmas, said Mabel just Christmas trees. While getting
- 19:30ready for bed, Maple said, well, I'm sorry I run
- 19:33you Christmas. I'm sorry you run Christmas too, said Willow.
- 19:38That night, Willow couldn't fall asleep. Willow felt sad about
- 19:42the Christmas tree. She felt even worse for hurting Maple's
- 19:46feelings than Willow god an idea. Getting ready for idea
- 19:52was hard work. Willow didn't mind. When all the work
- 19:58was done, Willow decided to wake up Ale and show
- 20:00her the big surprise. In There in the living room
- 20:04stood the best Christmas tree ladder in the whole wide world.
- 20:09It's perfect, said Maple. I know, said Willow, and she
- 20:12handed Maple the star to place on top. Our next
- 20:17story is titled Christmas Forever, Escape to the North Pole
- 20:23and it was published by Random House. It has a
- 20:26copyright year of twenty twenty four and the author of
- 20:31our book is Elisa Dunton. There once was a group
- 20:37of Christmas ornaments that all had different personalities. Mycroni was wacky,
- 20:43Star was fancy, Twirrel was sporty, Frosty was chill, and
- 20:47Odie was wise if a bit grumpy. But they shared
- 20:51one thing in common. They loved Christmas. They loved Christmas
- 20:55carols on repeat. They love stockings hung by the fire.
- 21:00They love fancy bows. Most of all, they loved trimming
- 21:03the tree with humans. There was just one huge problem.
- 21:07Christmas only happened one day year. That meant there were
- 21:10three hundred and sixty four days that were not Christmas.
- 21:14The Ornaments waiting in a box all year long. It
- 21:17was hot, it was smelly, it was endless. This year,
- 21:21the Ornaments did not want to go back in the
- 21:23smelly old box after Christmas. But what if they didn't
- 21:26have to? What if they could go to the North
- 21:28Pole where it could be Christmas forever? But how could
- 21:33they get to the North Pole. The Ornaments didn't have
- 21:36a car, they didn't have a plane, Macaroni, didn't even
- 21:39have shoes. They did have each other, that was the
- 21:42important thing. Maybe with a little teamwork they could pull
- 21:46this off. Together. They made a brilliant plan. When Santa
- 21:50came down the chimney, they sneak into a sleigh and
- 21:53hitch a ride back to the North Pole. On Christmas
- 21:58seve the Ornaments waded patiently for the family to go
- 22:01to bed. The youngest took her time saying good night,
- 22:05good night, Twirl, good night, Odie, good night Star, good night, Frosty,
- 22:09good night Macaroni. I love you more than a million
- 22:12cany canes. We love you too. Doesn't she have a bedtime?
- 22:18Oh dear. They would miss the little human, They would
- 22:21even miss the big humans, so they decide to leave
- 22:24a note, Dear family, we love you more than a
- 22:27million candy canes, but we are heading to the North Pole,
- 22:30where it's Christmas forever. We will cherish our memories and
- 22:34fun times. Love the Ornaments. The humans were all nestled
- 22:38snug in their beds. Not a creature was stirring, well
- 22:41except the Ornaments, who were on the move. There was
- 22:44just one little problem, the cat. The Ornaments had met
- 22:49the cat before, and they knew three things for sure.
- 22:52One cats are naughty. Two they take joy in torturing
- 22:56innocent ornaments. And three cats are very naughty. But there
- 23:02was no time to spare now or never Christmas forever.
- 23:06The journey was treacherous, it was terrifying, it was exhilarating.
- 23:11They made it. The ornaments Christmas dreams were finally coming true.
- 23:16But something was missing, Actually someone was missing. Where was
- 23:22Star The ornaments had a tough decision to make save
- 23:27their friend or eat Christmas cookies for breakfast all year long,
- 23:31soaking a hot tubful of hot cocoa every night, open
- 23:35presents every single morning. Oh boy, Christmas Forever sounded fun,
- 23:40but it just wouldn't be the same without the friend.
- 23:44Star were coming to save you. Luckily, the ornaments were
- 23:48braver than they looked and scrappier. Crash, the humans woke
- 23:54up to find the tree and ornaments scattered across the floor.
- 23:58They jumped into action to help their ornament friends get
- 24:01back on the tree where they belonged, And so Christmas
- 24:06started earlier that year, very early. Not that anyone was complaining.
- 24:11After all, Christmas Forever sounded pretty good, but being with
- 24:15ones you love was sweeter than a million candy canes.
- 24:21I still can't believe you came back for me. It
- 24:24wouldn't be Christmas without you, Star. That is all we
- 24:31have time for today, So it concludes our Children's Story
- 24:35hour for now. Please join us next time as we
- 24:40will read more stories, fables and fairy tales. Thank you
- 24:44for listening, and please stay tuned for the Lexing Harald
- 24:48Leader here on Radio I
