- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Anna McGivern for November 19th.
- 0:12Today is National Play Monopoly Day, celebrating the board game
- 0:17that's been causing family arguments and teaching
- 0:19capitalism since 1935. Monopoly was created during the
- 0:24Great Depression by Charles Adaro, an unemployed salesman
- 0:28from Philadelphia. He hand drew the board, carved
- 0:32the houses from wood, and sold it to Parker Brothers.
- 0:36It became the best selling board game in America within a year
- 0:41and has since been sold in over 100 countries.
- 0:44What makes Monopoly endure isn't just the gameplay, it's what it
- 0:49teaches strategy, negotiation, risk assessment, and the harsh
- 0:55reality that landing on Boardwalk with a hotel can ruin
- 1:00your whole evening. It's capitalism in miniature,
- 1:05complete with bankruptcy, deal making and the occasional player
- 1:08flipping the board. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:12from metaphysical author Florence Goval Shin, who
- 1:16captured something essential when she wrote Most people
- 1:20consider life a battle. But life is not a battle, it's a
- 1:25game. Shin's perspective shift is
- 1:28profound. When we see life as a battle,
- 1:32everything becomes adversarial. US versus them, win or lose,
- 1:38survival of the fittest. But games?
- 1:42Games have a different energy. Games have rules, but also
- 1:46creativity. Games can be competitive yet
- 1:50still be fun. You can lose a game and play a
- 1:54game tomorrow. Games require strategy, but they
- 1:57also allow for luck, surprise, and unexpected comebacks.
- 2:03Monopoly embodies this perfectly.
- 2:06Yes, you're competing. Yes, someone wins and someone
- 2:09loses. But you're still sitting around
- 2:12a table together, rolling dice, making deals, and laughing when
- 2:15someone lands on free parking. The game itself is lighter than
- 2:20battle, even when you take it seriously.
- 2:24When we approach life as a game rather than a battle, we can
- 2:28strategize without becoming ruthless, compete without
- 2:33becoming enemies, and lose without being destroyed.
- 2:40So today, approach life like Monopoly, not war.
- 2:46Be strategic, yes. Compete, absolutely, but also
- 2:51negotiate, take chances, laugh at the unexpected rolls.
- 2:57Maybe actually play Monopoly tonight, Gather some people,
- 3:02roll the dice, make ridiculous trades and remember what it
- 3:05feels like to play, to engage with challenge and competition
- 3:09while still enjoying the experience.
- 3:11Because Shin was right. Life works better as a game.
- 3:16You can take it seriously and still have fun.
- 3:19You can lose around and still play a game.
- 3:23The point isn't just winning, it's playing.
- 3:26Well. That's going to do it for today.
- 3:29I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 3:34tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:40with another daily quote.
