Transcript
- 0:13Now, they're a Singapore-based mining company, but their main operations are focused on iron ore concentrate in Malaysia. So, for those who might not know, iron ore concentrate, that's like a really key ingredient for making steel.
- 0:35But they've got all those detailed numbers. Right. And then we also have a trust
- 0:39release that they put out highlighting some of the key takeaways from the financials.
- 0:43And then we also have a separate announcement about some interesting new offtake
- 0:47agreements that they've secured.
- 0:48Okay. That's good. So basically, if you want to know how Fortress of Minerals
- 0:51is really doing, you're in the right place. Oh.
- 0:54Let's get into it. All right. Let's go. So the first thing that kind of jumps
- 0:57out at me looking at these financials, you know, is the revenue and the profit numbers.
- 1:01It's kind of a mixed bag. For the nine months ending November 30,
- 1:052024, the revenue is down 7.6% compared to the same period last year.
- 1:10But the most recent quarter actually saw a 19.6% jump year on year. Oh, wow.
- 1:17So that's, you know, it's kind of a bit of a swing there. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:21And then on the profit side, it's even more kind of intriguing,
- 1:24I guess. Gross profit is down for the nine months, but up slightly for the quarter.
- 1:29But the net profit after tax, that's where it gets really interesting,
- 1:32down 19.3% for the nine months.
- 1:34And then a pretty significant 68.1% decline in the last quarter. That's a big drop. Yeah.
- 1:40So now I know that when when people see net profit down, that can,
- 1:43you know, kind of set off some alarm bells. Right.
- 1:46But I am curious about something that they mentioned in the press release. OK.
- 1:49They pointed out that while revenue was down for that nine month period,
- 1:52EBITDA actually shows a smaller decline of only 16.5 percent.
- 1:57So can you can you help us understand what is EBITDA?
- 2:01Why is that number maybe important to consider when you're trying to get like
- 2:04a clear picture of a company's financial health? Yeah, sure.
- 2:08EBITDA, what makes that number so interesting is that it gives us a look at
- 2:12the profitability of the core business, you know, by taking away things like
- 2:15interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. You can really focus on how
- 2:20their operations are actually performing. Okay.
- 2:23So even though that net profit number, that drop might seem alarming at first glance, the EBITDA suggests that the underlying business is doing okay.
- 2:31You know, it's not as bad as that one number may suggest. So it's important
- 2:35to look at the whole picture, not just focus on one number. Exactly. Yeah.
- 2:39All right. So we've got these ups and downs in their financials,
- 2:42but the why is always more important than the what, right? Right.
- 2:46Yeah. So let's try to break down what's actually driving these changes.
- 2:49And let's start with sales volume.
- 2:51So they had some pretty significant maintenance going on in the same quarter
- 2:55last year, which makes this year's performance look even stronger by comparison.
- 3:01Because they didn't have that downtime this year. Right. It's like it highlights
- 3:04how important context is when you're analyzing financial performance.
- 3:09Year over year comparisons can be misleading if you don't take into account
- 3:14those events that might have skewed the numbers.
- 3:16Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And it actually kind of ties in nicely to their ongoing
- 3:20efforts to increase their production capacity, which I'm sure we'll get into
- 3:24more when we when we talk about the outlook.
- 3:25Yeah. But another piece of the puzzle here is is iron or prices.
- 3:30OK. So their average realized selling price was up slightly for the quarter,
- 3:35but it was down for that nine-month period overall.
- 3:39And the press release mentioned something about iron ore demand facing headwinds
- 3:43in China because of their economic slowdown.
- 3:46Now, I'll be honest, keeping up with all the global economic news,
- 3:49it can be a bit overwhelming sometimes.
- 3:52Oh, yeah. So can you help us break down what's happening in the iron ore market
- 3:56right now, and what does it mean for companies like Fortress Minerals?
- 4:00You're right. The global iron ore market, it's a complex beast.
- 4:04It is. You know, for years, China's rapid growth, especially in infrastructure
- 4:09and construction, that fueled a huge demand for iron ore.
- 4:13Yeah. But as their economy starts to cool down and they're shifting their focus,
- 4:17that demand is naturally going to be impacted.
- 4:20Makes sense. And it's not just China.
- 4:22India is emerging as a major steel producer, and that adds another layer of complexity. OK.
- 4:28Their increased production means they need more iron ore, which could potentially
- 4:32offset some of that slowdown from China. OK.
- 4:34But then you also have, you know, government policies that can influence the market.
- 4:38For example, India, they're considering a tax on steel imports,
- 4:42which could impact global prices and trade flows.
- 4:46So companies like Fortress Minerals, they have to kind of navigate these shifting
- 4:50tides really carefully. Yeah.
- 4:52So it sounds like they're kind of in a wait and see mode when it comes to iron ore prices.
- 4:57Hoping for the best, but prepared for continued volatility. Exactly.
- 5:00Yeah. Now, here's where things get really interesting to me. Okay.
- 5:05The biggest hit to their profitability in this recent quarter seems to be coming
- 5:09from production costs. Okay.
- 5:11Their average unit cost of sales jumped by almost 30%. Wow.
- 5:16Okay. Yeah. And the official results, they attribute this to variations in production
- 5:20levels and the sales mix of inventories with higher batch unit costs.
- 5:24Can you break that down for us? I think a lot of people would appreciate a plain
- 5:28English explanation of what that actually means. Yeah. Yeah. I can definitely try.
- 5:32Essentially, it means that the iron ore that they sold this quarter was,
- 5:36on average, just more expensive to produce.
- 5:39And this could be because they sold a higher proportion of ore that had been
- 5:42sitting in inventory for a while, produced back when costs were higher.
- 5:47Or it could be due to shifts in the type of ore that they're extracting.
- 5:52You know, some types are naturally more costly to process.
- 5:56Right. But the key takeaway here is that this doesn't necessarily mean there's
- 5:59a like a systemic problem with their cost structure.
- 6:03OK. It could be a short term blip.
- 6:06We need to see if this trend continues in future quarters to really know.
- 6:11So it's kind of like, I don't know, like that time I tried to make sourdough
- 6:14bread and ended up with a brick instead of a loaf. OK.
- 6:17You know, the ingredients themselves weren't necessarily bad.
- 6:20Right. Just something in the process went a little bit awry.
- 6:23Yeah. Yeah. Maybe Fortress Minerals just had a bad batch this quarter,
- 6:28so to speak. That's a good analogy.
- 6:30Yeah. It's important to not overreact to a single quarter's performance,
- 6:34especially in a cyclical industry like mining. Right. Right. Yeah.
- 6:40So now that we've we've sort of gone through their the recent performance,
- 6:44let's shift years a little bit and talk about Fortress Minerals plans for the
- 6:49future and what kind of factors might impact their their journey, I guess.
- 6:54Yeah. You know, I'm I'm always much more interested in where a company is going
- 6:58than where it's been, you know. Right.
- 6:59But the past is just a prologue. Exactly. Yeah. One thing that I that I noticed
- 7:03in the press release was the announcement about those new offtake agreements they they secured.
- 7:09And specifically, they've locked in sales of over 500,000 wet metric tons of
- 7:16iron ore to a domestic steel mill in Malaysia.
- 7:21And this agreement goes all the way through the end of 2025.
- 7:25So I think it might be helpful, you know, for some of our listeners,
- 7:28if we could just quickly explain, you know, what is an offtake agreement and
- 7:32why is this such a big deal for Fortress Minerals? Sure. Yeah.
- 7:35Offtake agreements, they're basically contracts that guarantee a buyer for a
- 7:40certain amount of production.
- 7:41Okay. And they're really valuable in the mining industry because they provide
- 7:45a lot of revenue certainty and they reduce, you know, some of the risk.
- 7:48In this particular case, you know, it shows a lot of confidence from the customer
- 7:51and it really strengthens Fortress Minerals position in the Malaysian market.
- 7:55You know, having those those sales already, you know, locked in allows them
- 7:59to plan much more effectively and to invest with with more confidence.
- 8:03That makes a lot of sense. It's like having a safety net, you know,
- 8:06knowing that a portion of your future production is already spoken for. Exactly.
- 8:11Yeah. But offtake agreements aren't the only way that Fortress Minerals is building for the future.
- 8:17They're also investing pretty heavily in expanding their production capacity.
- 8:22And see, they're working on a new crushing plant at Bukit Basi,
- 8:27which is expected to be operational in 2026.
- 8:29And they're also developing this integrated processing plant at their CASB mine,
- 8:34which will allow them to extract copper and pyrotite in addition to iron ore.
- 8:40So what can you tell us about these projects and what kind of impact could they
- 8:44have on the company's future performance? Sure.
- 8:47So that new crushing plant at Bukit Basi, it's a big step towards increasing
- 8:51their efficiency and their output.
- 8:53They're using some advanced technology and they're designing it for scalability.
- 8:57So that means they can easily ramp up production as needed.
- 9:01Makes sense. And that integrated processing plant at CSB, that's really interesting.
- 9:05Yeah. It shows they're moving towards diversification.
- 9:08By extracting those other minerals like copper and puritite alongside iron ore,
- 9:14they're spreading out their risk and they're creating these potential new revenue streams.
- 9:18Okay. You know, that could be
- 9:19a huge growth driver, especially if iron ore prices, they remain volatile.
- 9:25So they're not putting all their eggs in one basket, so to speak. Exactly.
- 9:29That's a smart strategy. Now, one more thing that I noticed in the press release
- 9:33that I thought was interesting was they mentioned that they're exploring some
- 9:36additional fundraising opportunities.
- 9:38So what do you think that might suggest about their, you know,
- 9:42their financial needs or their overall, like,
- 9:46Strategy. Yeah. Fundraising usually indicates that a company needs capital to
- 9:51fund those big projects. Right.
- 9:53Or it could mean that that they want to make acquisitions, you know,
- 9:56so they could they could grow more quickly by buying existing operations.
- 10:01Essentially, you know, it suggests that they're trying to accelerate their growth. OK.
- 10:05That can be both exciting and risky. Sure. It'll it'll be interesting to see
- 10:09what direction they choose. Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:11And I think for for anyone out there, you know, that's maybe thinking about
- 10:15investing in in Fortress Minerals.
- 10:17That's a key area to kind of keep an eye on.
- 10:20You know, how they raise funds, what they use them for. It can tell you a lot
- 10:23about their priorities and their risk tolerance.
- 10:26Right. We've covered a lot of ground in this deep dive. You know,
- 10:29we've looked at Fortress Minerals' recent financial performance.
- 10:33We've explored their kind of ambitious plans for expansion and diversification.
- 10:38And now it's time to tackle the big question, right?
- 10:41What are those those external factors, the things that are outside of their
- 10:45control that could really make or break their success in the years to come. That's a big one.
- 10:50No company operates in a bubble.
- 10:53The external environment plays a huge role in shaping their path.
- 10:59Exactly. And one of the most obvious factors that we've already kind of touched
- 11:03on is that global demand for iron ore.
- 11:06You know, Fortress Minerals, they're really betting big on Malaysia's continued
- 11:12economic growth and the world's need for steel.
- 11:15But as we talked about earlier, you know, China's slowdown, it's already impacting the market.
- 11:20And who knows what other global shifts might be on the horizon. Right.
- 11:24Yeah. I mean, if demand for iron ore weakens, you know, it could really significantly
- 11:30impact Fortress Mineral's revenue, their profitability, even if they execute
- 11:35those expansion plans perfectly.
- 11:37Yeah. So it's not just about how much iron ore they can dig up and process.
- 11:40It's also, you know, who's buying it and at what price.
- 11:43It's a good reminder that even the best laid plans, sometimes they get disrupted
- 11:48by forces that are beyond our control. Absolutely.
- 11:51Yeah. And it highlights the importance of understanding those,
- 11:54you know, kind of macro economic trends when you're thinking about investing
- 11:59in a company, especially in a sector like mining.
- 12:01It's all about connecting those global dots to the company's specific story. Yeah. Now.
- 12:06Beyond the big picture of iron ore demand, are there any other kind of external
- 12:12factors that you would be watching if you were, you know, kind of evaluating fortress minerals?
- 12:17Yeah, I think environmental regulations are a key area to keep an eye on.
- 12:21Mining, you know, by its nature, it has an environmental impact.
- 12:25And governments all over the world are getting more strict. They're scrutinizing
- 12:29mining practices more closely.
- 12:31If regulations change, especially in Malaysia, where Fortress Minerals operates,
- 12:37that could lead to higher costs, maybe even operational restrictions.
- 12:42Right, right. The regulatory landscape, it's always evolving.
- 12:46And companies, they really need to be adaptable if they want to thrive. Exactly.
- 12:50Yeah. And another thing to think about is geopolitical risk.
- 12:54You know, things like global events, political instability, even trade wars,
- 12:59they can disrupt supply chains, they can impact commodity prices,
- 13:03and they can even create security concerns in the regions where Fortress Minerals operates.
- 13:09Yeah, it's a good reminder that we live in a very interconnected world.
- 13:14You know, things that happen in one part of the world can have ripple effects
- 13:18that impact businesses, you know, thousands of miles away.
- 13:22Yeah, for sure. And, you know, we also can't forget about...
- 13:26The technological landscape, there's a lot of innovation happening really rapidly in the mining sector.
- 13:31You know, automation, artificial intelligence, new extraction techniques,
- 13:35they're always emerging.
- 13:36So Fortress Minerals is going to have to, they got to keep pace with these advancements
- 13:40if they want to stay competitive and efficient.
- 13:43You know, falling behind could really put them at a disadvantage.
- 13:46Yeah, it's a race to the future. And only the companies that really embrace
- 13:51innovation are going to truly thrive.
- 13:54So I guess for our listeners out there who've been on this deep dive with us, what does it all mean?
- 14:00I mean, you know, we've kind of unearthed a wealth of information about fortress minerals.
- 14:05We've seen their challenges, their ambitions, the external forces that could shape their path.
- 14:10But the ultimate question is, you know, how can you apply this knowledge?
- 14:15What should you be thinking about as you continue your own, you know,
- 14:19kind of exploration of this company?
- 14:21Well, I think it all comes down to weighing the potential rewards against the risks, right?
- 14:27I mean, Fortress Minerals, they're taking some proactive steps to build a stronger future.
- 14:33They're getting those offtake agreements, they're investing in growth,
- 14:36they're diversifying their operations, but they're also operating in a very,
- 14:40very complex and dynamic environment.
- 14:42Exactly. So as you're considering Fortress minerals, you know,
- 14:46think about those big picture trends.
- 14:48What's the future of iron ore demand going to look like?
- 14:51How might government policies and technological advances, how might they reshape the mining landscape?
- 14:58These are all factors that could have a big impact on their success.
- 15:01Yeah. Remember, you know, knowledge is most powerful when it's understood and applied.
- 15:07So keep digging, keep questioning, keep exploring. That's what we do here on The Deep Dive.
- 15:12And we We hope this deep dive into Fortress Minerals has given you some valuable
- 15:16insights to inform your own research and decision-making. Until next time.
- 15:20Music.
