• 0:51
Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee and I'm
• 0:54
Speaker 3: here with Let's Talk. And Lisa Odie is my only
• 0:58
Speaker 3: guest in the building today.
• 1:00
  Speaker 4: Good.
• 1:00
Speaker 5: This is a scary thing.
• 1:01
Speaker 3: Hollis Lewis is out today and we're we're Lisa. It
• 1:07
Speaker 3: has been so it has been like so hot here recently,
• 1:13
Speaker 3: Like you know, when you start talking about this kind
• 1:16
Speaker 3: of heat and you start talking about like sports, right,
• 1:20
Speaker 3: I mean, this is really really really considered what I
• 1:24
Speaker 3: would call danger exactly.
• 1:26
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the pervading question. At least in our region,
• 1:29
Speaker 6: is hot enough for you have you heard that maybe
• 1:32
Speaker 6: once over the past weekend and probably the next four
• 1:36
Speaker 6: or five days. But but yes, the extreme heat it's
• 1:39
Speaker 6: affecting you know, all of the Midwest of course our
• 1:41
Speaker 6: area and most of the East coast, and extreme heat
• 1:45
Speaker 6: warnings are out and it did play, you know, some
• 1:47
Speaker 6: some havoc with our Major League Baseball over the weekend.
• 1:52
Speaker 6: The soaring tempts just affected some of the players, and
• 1:55
Speaker 6: some of the bigger name players were affected. I just
• 1:57
Speaker 6: wanted to bring that up and we can kind of
• 1:59
Speaker 6: discuss a further. But over the weekend, one of the
• 2:03
Speaker 6: shortstops for the Cincinnati Reds, Ellie Dela Cruz.
• 2:07
Speaker 5: I think you've heard of him.
• 2:09
Speaker 6: He fell ill during a game at Bush Stadium against
• 2:13
Speaker 6: the Cardinals. He actually he left the field and his
• 2:20
Speaker 6: manager stated, which I thought this was kind of a
• 2:21
Speaker 6: funny way to put what happened, but he said, he stated,
• 2:24
Speaker 6: he drank a bunch of water and then he went
• 2:26
Speaker 6: right out and got rid of it. So obviously we
• 2:29
Speaker 6: know what that means. But so but he was he
• 2:32
Speaker 6: left the game for a period of time. It wasn't
• 2:34
Speaker 6: a serious medical emergency. He was able to return and
• 2:37
Speaker 6: the Reds were victorious in that game, so he was
• 2:40
Speaker 6: able to come back and finish. The other player that
• 2:42
Speaker 6: had affected it was a relieve a reliever pitcher for
• 2:47
Speaker 6: the Mariners, Trent Thornton, And for him it was a
• 2:50
Speaker 6: little more serious because during the fourth inning, I think,
• 2:55
Speaker 6: not not the fourth I think it was later in
• 2:57
Speaker 6: the game, but he actually had a physical event and
• 3:01
Speaker 6: he actually had to be helped off the field by
• 3:04
Speaker 6: the manager and by the assistant athletic trainer, and he
• 3:07
Speaker 6: was immediately taken to an ice bath, which tells me
• 3:11
Speaker 6: his may have been more closer to, you know, a
• 3:14
Speaker 6: heat stroke rather than heat exhaustion. He did not return
• 3:17
Speaker 6: their tempts at that time at the beginning of the
• 3:20
Speaker 6: game was like you know, ninety four. They also had
• 3:24
Speaker 6: some UMP's fall ill during that game as well. So
• 3:28
Speaker 6: the reason I thought this would be a good discussion
• 3:30
  Speaker 6: obviously it's a current event, but also you've experienced I'm
• 3:34
Speaker 6: sure periods of excessive heat during your summer training camps
• 3:40
Speaker 6: the beginning of NFL season.
• 3:42
Speaker 5: You know, how did that affect your play.
• 3:45
Speaker 3: Well, I'll start you when you start talking about like
• 3:49
Speaker 3: training camp. Yes, you know, I think at the end
• 3:51
Speaker 3: of the day, like I think the coaches, the mentality
• 3:54
Speaker 3: back then, before all of the notable issues that were
• 4:00
Speaker 3: around heat, you know, the heat was like the hotter,
• 4:05
Speaker 3: the better, you know, because you know that's gonna get you,
• 4:09
Speaker 3: was the mentality. And and that's gonna get you in shape.
• 4:13
Speaker 3: And but you had guys fallout. You had guys who
• 4:20
Speaker 3: whatever they had had for lunch, whatever they had had
• 4:22
Speaker 3: for breakfast, they couldn't, they couldn't, they couldn't keep it down.
• 4:25
Speaker 7: And but the crazy thing about old school.
• 4:31
Speaker 3: And most types of issues like this, no one sees
• 4:37
Speaker 3: it as a issue.
• 4:39
Speaker 7: It's just something. It's not dangerous. It's it's something that hey, sit.
• 4:44
Speaker 3: Down, put an ice towel on, you sit for a
• 4:47
Speaker 3: little bit, and go right back out. And you and
• 4:51
Speaker 3: and we didn't know the risk that we were taking.
• 4:56
Speaker 3: And a lot of times it's not even necessarily the coach.
• 5:00
Speaker 3: A lot of times it's the player, like you want
• 5:03
Speaker 3: to get back out there, you know. And and and
• 5:06
Speaker 3: fortunately for me, you know, the few times that I've
• 5:10
Speaker 3: ever really felt like I was i'd been overheated.
• 5:13
Speaker 7: Like again, I'm right back in, you know.
• 5:16
Speaker 3: Just get me on the get me on the sideline,
• 5:18
Speaker 3: get me on the bench, get me a towel, dump
• 5:22
Speaker 3: some water over me.
• 5:24
Speaker 7: I'm good to go. And really, you're not.
• 5:28
  Speaker 5: You're not.
• 5:29
  Speaker 7: You're really you're not.
• 5:30
Speaker 3: And I think I think in the on the high
• 5:33
Speaker 3: school collegiate level, I think, and and and even matter
• 5:38
Speaker 3: of fact, I'll even go down all the way down
• 5:41
Speaker 3: to the youth levels. You have to be really, really
• 5:45
Speaker 3: careful when you're talking about this kind of heat. And
• 5:48
Speaker 3: anybody who's gets a little dizzy, feels like they're ready
• 5:53
Speaker 3: to throw up, throws up, any of it.
• 5:56
  Speaker 7: That's a that's a signal that.
• 5:57
Speaker 3: You should not medical treatment, you should not ignore, right
• 6:01
Speaker 3: because at the end of the day, that practice play,
• 6:05
Speaker 3: that practice time, they can make that up.
• 6:09
Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure. And what I was going to say,
• 6:12
Speaker 6: you know, they really they recommend. I know, there's some
• 6:15
Speaker 6: strategies that you just recommended, like with the towel and
• 6:19
Speaker 6: with the dump the water and all those things.
• 6:22
Speaker 5: But you know, I guess prior to.
• 6:26
Speaker 6: Training and all of this the season beginning, they also recommend,
• 6:30
Speaker 6: like you know, doing those ninety minutes like heat exposures,
• 6:34
Speaker 6: like you go out for you know, one one day
• 6:37
Speaker 6: or two days a week for ninety minutes and kind
• 6:39
Speaker 6: of expose yourself and gradually build that up. Yeah, was
• 6:43
Speaker 6: that something you guys did or no?
• 6:45
Speaker 3: If you know, we had, you know, again, at the
• 6:48
Speaker 3: professional level, you got you know, you're in camp and
• 6:51
Speaker 3: you've got two days, right, so you're coming out. You're
• 6:54
Speaker 3: probably out on the field by nine or so, no
• 6:59
Speaker 3: later than ten, and you're a yeah, and.
• 7:04
Speaker 6: So why wouldn't they start earlier to avoid the heat?
• 7:07
Speaker 6: They want you in the heat right thet.
• 7:09
Speaker 3: I'm not going to say that they want you that's
• 7:11
Speaker 3: just kind of the schedule, like you know, and it
• 7:13
Speaker 3: could have been earlier, but you're gonna get two hours
• 7:16
Speaker 3: worth of practice and you're going to be in full
• 7:19
Speaker 3: gear and you're gonna get a break, you know. So
• 7:25
Speaker 3: but how much of a break can you get, you know,
• 7:27
Speaker 3: sipping water bottles and you know, or something in a cup.
• 7:31
Speaker 3: It's it's really just not enough. But it was we
• 7:35
Speaker 3: looked at it as this is what it is, right,
• 7:38
Speaker 3: We knew knew. We didn't know a difference in you know,
• 7:43
Speaker 3: you know it's hot, but you don't really know.
• 7:45
Speaker 5: That was kind of the old school.
• 7:47
Speaker 7: It was an old.
• 7:47
Speaker 3: School, and you didn't really think that anybody was really
• 7:51
Speaker 3: gonna fall out. And sometimes even when you think that,
• 7:53
Speaker 3: they when they fall out, you're like that, you know
• 7:59
Speaker 3: they they couldn't take it, right, They're not tough, They're
• 8:01
Speaker 3: not tough enough. They couldn't take it. They can't they
• 8:03
Speaker 3: couldn't go through it all. But I'm telling you, like
• 8:08
Speaker 3: this type of heat, it can it can cause you
• 8:13
Speaker 3: some really really major issues and.
• 8:18
Speaker 7: You need to take you need to take account for it.
• 8:20
Speaker 7: Like I know, we went we went bike riding the
• 8:23
  Speaker 7: other day and.
• 8:26
Speaker 3: We went about ten fifteen miles or so, and I
• 8:32
Speaker 3: could feel, yeah, like man, this was tough.
• 8:37
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 8:37
Speaker 6: You don't even have to be active in no, just
• 8:40
Speaker 6: literally like yesterday evening, I had the dogs out after
• 8:44
Speaker 6: they'd eaten their dinner and I could just feel my
• 8:46
Speaker 6: body like just the perspiration and I'm just sitting there
• 8:49
Speaker 6: like out of the sun in the shade because of
• 8:51
Speaker 6: the high humidity as well, which plays a huge part
• 8:54
Speaker 6: in all of this.
• 8:55
Speaker 5: But you know, the overall thing I think I.
• 8:57
Speaker 6: Wanted to to kind of talk about too was the performance.
• 9:01
Speaker 6: I mean, it's going to affect your performance out on
• 9:03
Speaker 6: the field regardless. I mean, even if you're able to
• 9:05
Speaker 6: stay on the field. You know, there's things that neurologically
• 9:09
Speaker 6: and physically that it's it's got to slow you down.
• 9:13
Speaker 7: Yes, I have to.
• 9:14
Speaker 3: And again I'm I'm cautious in answering how you know
• 9:18
Speaker 3: a certain kind of way because I don't want to.
• 9:20
Speaker 3: I don't want to lead anybody to think like it's
• 9:22
Speaker 3: okay what I'm saying, or how somebody handled it, how
• 9:26
Speaker 3: I handled it doesn't make it right. I'm just want
• 9:29
Speaker 3: to clarify that I think we get I think as
• 9:34
Speaker 3: you go up the ladder, especially at the professional level,
• 9:39
Speaker 3: you start to think that there isn't anything that can
• 9:43
  Speaker 3: can break you.
• 9:45
Speaker 7: There isn't anything that can It shows weakness.
• 9:48
Speaker 3: Yes, it's it makes you feel like you you it's
• 9:51
  Speaker 3: a it's a it's a male kind of thing that
• 9:54
Speaker 3: like we don't want to you know, I know it's hot.
• 9:57
  Speaker 3: I don't want to fall out, I don't want to
• 9:59
Speaker 3: throw up, I don't want to do anything. I don't want,
• 10:01
Speaker 3: you know, I don't need any of those kinds of things.
• 10:04
Speaker 7: And I think we have to be.
• 10:07
Speaker 6: Careful well, don't you think the tides changed in that
• 10:11
Speaker 6: whole attitude about the heat exposure with I think it
• 10:14
Speaker 6: was two thousand and one. Was it Corey Stringer that
• 10:18
Speaker 6: passed away during a practice? It may have been in
• 10:21
Speaker 6: college or a high school student, I do from heat
• 10:24
Speaker 6: related illness. It may have even been I think it
• 10:26
Speaker 6: was a heat stroke, and that started to bring attention
• 10:30
Speaker 6: to the dangers of extreme heat and athletes.
• 10:35
  Speaker 7: Yes, and I don't know.
• 10:38
Speaker 5: I'm assuming I have to regulated now.
• 10:41
Speaker 3: Yes, I was gonna say, I have to assume that
• 10:43
Speaker 3: there is a huge regulation or something in place that
• 10:49
Speaker 3: you have to do in those types of situations. If
• 10:53
Speaker 3: we'd had a you know, maybe a coach or something,
• 10:56
Speaker 3: they may know what those regulations have been or are now.
• 11:02
  Speaker 7: Because there's no way I can't imagine.
• 11:05
Speaker 6: And if somebody out there can google Corey Corey Stringer
• 11:09
Speaker 6: two thousand and one heat exhaustion incident. I couldn't remember
• 11:13
Speaker 6: if it was a high school or college or even professional,
• 11:16
Speaker 6: but I do remember the incident.
• 11:18
  Speaker 5: I remember it.
• 11:18
Speaker 6: Was a big deal because he actually died during practice.
• 11:22
Speaker 7: I've got it here.
• 11:23
Speaker 8: It was during the Minnesota Vikings training camp two thousand
• 11:26
  Speaker 8: and one.
• 11:26
Speaker 7: Oh Okay, okay, that's something I probably should have known.
• 11:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay, I knew it was Okay, Yeah, and it was.
• 11:33
Speaker 5: It was a big deal.
• 11:34
  Speaker 9: It was.
• 11:35
Speaker 5: And that's when it really started to throw light on
• 11:38
Speaker 5: the dangers of this.
• 11:39
Speaker 3: And you would like to think that it would have
• 11:44
Speaker 3: it should have all maybe should have been already in place.
• 11:47
Speaker 7: But again, at the at that level.
• 11:52
Speaker 3: Everything is like, you you know, there's nothing that you
• 11:55
Speaker 3: should be able to not do. You know, you got
• 11:58
Speaker 3: to be able to deal with the cold, You got
• 12:00
Speaker 3: to be able to do deal with the rain, you
• 12:02
Speaker 3: got to be able to do with all the heat.
• 12:04
Speaker 3: You got to like it's like you have to be
• 12:07
Speaker 3: prepared to play in any condition that you that you
• 12:11
Speaker 3: get and I do. Look when I look back at that,
• 12:14
Speaker 3: I do get it because we played in every kind
• 12:17
  Speaker 3: of weather.
• 12:18
Speaker 7: Possible, right right, But at the end of the day,
• 12:22
  Speaker 7: you know.
• 12:23
Speaker 3: There's there's some safety issues that you have to consider.
• 12:28
Speaker 6: And you could even go a step further with this
• 12:30
Speaker 6: beyond the athletes on the field that are you know,
• 12:32
Speaker 6: in whatever the you know, the event is what about
• 12:35
Speaker 6: you know, like like what happened with that umpire during
• 12:38
Speaker 6: that baseball game. You you know, there had to have
• 12:40
Speaker 6: been incidents of heat related illness with with probably the fans, spectators,
• 12:45
Speaker 6: and officials during some of those baseball games.
• 12:48
Speaker 5: Of least, it affects everybody.
• 12:50
Speaker 3: It does you, you because you're in the bleachers right
• 12:53
Speaker 3: and cheering and thinking.
• 12:54
Speaker 5: All and having a hot dog and a beer.
• 12:56
Speaker 3: Yeah that it's not gonna it's not gonna impact you.
• 12:59
Speaker 3: It it it actually will. And and I and I
• 13:04
Speaker 3: just don't think that we've and I hate to say
• 13:07
Speaker 3: it this way, I just don't think we've had enough
• 13:09
Speaker 3: situations to where we look at this as a really
• 13:14
Speaker 3: as a major thing, like like like it's not a
• 13:18
Speaker 3: major concern. It's not like you know, to my knowledge,
• 13:22
Speaker 3: I don't know that we've taken it serious enough or
• 13:26
  Speaker 3: or putting.
• 13:27
Speaker 5: Maybe because that happen enough.
• 13:29
Speaker 6: I mean, like these extreme heat types of of weather,
• 13:33
Speaker 6: you know events, they're not every summer, and they're not
• 13:36
Speaker 6: this you know this you know impactful, and they're not.
• 13:40
Speaker 3: Every sport, you know. I don't think that we should
• 13:47
Speaker 3: you know, we we have. I don't think we should
• 13:49
Speaker 3: have to wait to understand prevention. Yes, how how how serious,
• 13:55
Speaker 3: how risky it is to be in this type of
• 13:59
Speaker 3: heat and exercising outside just you know, guaranteed somebody's out running, yeah, you.
• 14:07
Speaker 7: Know, and and and they're loving it.
• 14:10
Speaker 3: We rode bikes the other day, and and I'm I'm
• 14:14
Speaker 3: putting on shirt after shirt after shirt after shirt and
• 14:17
Speaker 3: my and my sweat jacket because I want to sweat, you.
• 14:21
  Speaker 4: Know, And.
• 14:26
Speaker 5: Yes, are you serious?
• 14:29
  Speaker 7: Car?
• 14:30
Speaker 3: And when I thought about it is when I got back,
• 14:35
Speaker 3: because I was because I was soaked.
• 14:36
Speaker 6: Did you feel like I did feel a little a
• 14:39
Speaker 6: little easy a little.
• 14:40
Speaker 7: Bit, but I was like, you know, hey, I did it.
• 14:44
Speaker 3: I got I got a good sweat, lost a few paunds.
• 14:48
Speaker 5: But you're living in that old school world.
• 14:51
Speaker 7: Carl's using Mother nature sauna out there.
• 14:54
Speaker 5: You know, I can't even believe he's saying this.
• 14:57
Speaker 3: I mean, but I say it for the fact that,
• 15:00
Speaker 3: like I know for a fact that there are people
• 15:04
Speaker 3: like me right who are doing things who may not
• 15:08
Speaker 3: even be that don't take it serious, Yeah, that don't
• 15:11
Speaker 3: take it serious, may not be in the shape that
• 15:14
Speaker 3: I'm not saying you have to be in shape to
• 15:16
Speaker 3: do it. I'm not condoning what I did, but it
• 15:19
Speaker 3: does help. And then how far and how much and
• 15:23
Speaker 3: how strenuous the things that you're doing. You have to
• 15:27
Speaker 3: pay attention to that in order to be safe.
• 15:31
Speaker 5: So here's the question in the room. Here's the elephant
• 15:34
  Speaker 5: in the room.
• 15:35
Speaker 6: What are some of the strategies that I know, it's summer,
• 15:38
Speaker 6: it gets hot, we all know that. But what are
• 15:40
Speaker 6: some strategies that may be Major League Baseball on these
• 15:43
Speaker 6: other mid summer type of outdoor you know sports, what
• 15:48
Speaker 6: could they do to maybe help alleviate or prevent some
• 15:51
Speaker 6: of these things happening, like with these two players that
• 15:54
Speaker 6: happened over the weekend and the official I mean, what
• 15:56
Speaker 6: are some things they can do.
• 15:57
Speaker 3: I think people would people would hate this, but I
• 16:00
Speaker 3: think you need, especially in locations that are really hot,
• 16:05
Speaker 3: you need indoor stadiums, you know. I think the I
• 16:08
Speaker 3: think what solves this is indoor stadiums.
• 16:12
Speaker 7: Okay, you know that solves your problem.
• 16:15
Speaker 6: Or you schedule it, like if it's a matinee type
• 16:17
Speaker 6: of game, you're gonna have to have it either early
• 16:19
Speaker 6: in the morning or late in the evening.
• 16:21
Speaker 5: I mean, whether the fans like it or not.
• 16:23
Speaker 8: Major League Baseball does a little bit as you look
• 16:26
Speaker 8: at a team's season schedule, if they move further into
• 16:30
Speaker 8: the summer, the games during the weeks start a lot later,
• 16:33
Speaker 8: like a lot of them are seven.
• 16:35
Speaker 6: I'm not sure what time these games started. It was
• 16:38
Speaker 6: so hot it didn't matter, probably even if they started
• 16:41
  Speaker 6: at seven.
• 16:41
Speaker 8: Well, and this, this is maybe a deeper rabbit hole
• 16:44
Speaker 8: than you want to go down. One of the differences
• 16:46
Speaker 8: I think for for me, like talking about football versus baseball.
• 16:51
Speaker 8: With football, you if you want to have your legs
• 16:54
Speaker 8: the bottoms of your legs exposed, or if you want
• 16:56
Speaker 8: your arms exposed. You know, you don't have to have fabric. Baseball,
• 17:01
Speaker 8: I mean they came in game out all summer long.
• 17:04
Speaker 8: They're wearing pants, you got that hot glove, you gotta
• 17:07
Speaker 8: wear a hat. I mean it's and you know, sometimes
• 17:09
Speaker 8: you're just standing out there and the.
• 17:11
Speaker 5: Heat is in the sun bearing down on you.
• 17:13
Speaker 8: I wonder if I mean people would revolt. I'm sure,
• 17:17
Speaker 8: but I mean, is there something you could do maybe
• 17:19
  Speaker 8: with the uniform.
• 17:20
  Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good that's a good point.
• 17:25
Speaker 3: And I could I could see, I could see shorts,
• 17:28
Speaker 3: I could see something like that. But again, sliding, yeah,
• 17:32
Speaker 3: you know, all those kinds of things would would would
• 17:35
Speaker 3: be the reason why you don't go there. But again,
• 17:40
Speaker 3: I think the reality that the key piece to this
• 17:44
  Speaker 3: is indoor stadiums.
• 17:47
Speaker 5: Or if you can't do that, sometimes who can't?
• 17:50
Speaker 6: Here's my thing, Well tell me, I mean you got
• 17:52
Speaker 6: to have money to build those indoor stadiums.
• 17:55
Speaker 5: Some of these cities can't afford that. So I bet
• 17:57
  Speaker 5: that's an issue.
• 17:58
Speaker 3: I bet you again when you start talking about when
• 18:02
Speaker 3: you start talking about the NFL, the league itself could
• 18:08
Speaker 3: could confirm that every team could have an indoor stadium
• 18:12
Speaker 3: if they hadn't, if this was an issue. I'm not
• 18:14
Speaker 3: sure how much baseball makes, how much the league itself makes, There's.
• 18:19
Speaker 7: Gotta be there's got to be something.
• 18:22
Speaker 5: Well, I will give credit.
• 18:23
Speaker 6: I will give credit to Wrigley Field because they're going
• 18:26
Speaker 6: to go a step beyond like the missing you know,
• 18:28
Speaker 6: stations and all that. They're actually going to bring in
• 18:31
Speaker 6: a portable, some type of a truck or something that
• 18:34
Speaker 6: will be their cooling unit so that when a player
• 18:36
Speaker 6: gets over you know, heated, or they feel like they
• 18:38
Speaker 6: need a break, they can go into that. I don't
• 18:40
Speaker 6: know how many stadiums have that, but at least they're trying.
• 18:42
Speaker 7: Well, there are a few that are indoor.
• 18:44
Speaker 8: I mean, you talk about down in Florida or American
• 18:48
Speaker 8: Family Field in Milwaukee. They've got the removable roof the
• 18:51
Speaker 8: Rogers Center up in Toronto. But other than that, I mean,
• 18:55
Speaker 8: like the one I think of is maybe more like Minnesota.
• 18:58
Speaker 8: Could you imagine in the spring game in March this Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
• 19:05
Speaker 8: you need it for those fringe party sure season.
• 19:08
Speaker 7: Yeah all right, Well.
• 19:10
Speaker 6: You were a busy man this past weekend, Carle, Carly,
• 19:13
Speaker 6: let me tell it. Let me tell the audience right now,
• 19:14
Speaker 6: the listening audience, Carle is drinking coffee like it's it's just.
• 19:20
Speaker 5: Going out of style.
• 19:21
Speaker 6: And I walked into into the station this evening and
• 19:24
Speaker 6: he was like, I'm living on coffee. And I'm like what,
• 19:26
Speaker 6: because I've never really seen Carl drink this, drink coffee
• 19:30
Speaker 6: like this. So Carl had a very busy weekend that
• 19:33
Speaker 6: I'm very curious about. And I want to know what
• 19:35
Speaker 6: happened this past weekend in Minneapolis.
• 19:38
  Speaker 3: Well, there's a there's a gentleman who's who is puts
• 19:44
Speaker 3: on these events signings. We had a camp. I think
• 19:50
Speaker 3: this is about the third year of the football camp
• 19:53
Speaker 3: and he and he brings in a bunch of players
• 19:57
Speaker 3: just for you know, for the excitement of it.
• 20:00
Speaker 5: Okay, spill the tea.
• 20:01
Speaker 3: We want names and we want we had we had,
• 20:05
Speaker 3: we had Dante called Pepper. He was there, Jim McMahon
• 20:11
Speaker 3: was there. Chicago and the Chicago Bear quarterback. Now, the
• 20:15
Speaker 3: interesting component about that is I think he did play
• 20:18
Speaker 3: a year in Minnesota, but you know he was a Bear.
• 20:22
Speaker 7: But he he gets along.
• 20:26
Speaker 3: He's the guy that gets along with any and everybody,
• 20:30
Speaker 3: and and and Dante, who I am going to just
• 20:34
Speaker 3: just so everybody knows, I'm going to go after him
• 20:36
Speaker 3: as a guest, uh to get him on awesome.
• 20:42
  Speaker 7: I am shocked.
• 20:43
Speaker 5: Did they do the Super Bowl shuffle?
• 20:46
  Speaker 7: I don't think. I don't think Jim can do that.
• 20:50
Speaker 7: I don't think he could do it.
• 20:52
Speaker 3: But what what was what was amazing to me was
• 20:56
Speaker 3: to watch guys who were the epitome of the league
• 21:01
Speaker 3: at one point in time, and how genuine they were
• 21:08
Speaker 3: and and and personable to anybody who came up to
• 21:15
Speaker 3: to sign like I saw, especially Dante. I'll give him
• 21:22
Speaker 3: the huge props like I don't think he turned down
• 21:27
Speaker 3: a any anybody signing. Let's say so, let's say we
• 21:32
Speaker 3: we we signed for about an hour and we're walking
• 21:36
  Speaker 3: around somewhere in.
• 21:38
Speaker 6: Now was this this autograph signing event combined with like
• 21:41
  Speaker 6: a football camp.
• 21:41
Speaker 7: It was with a football camp.
• 21:43
Speaker 3: It was with kind of everything all right, and so
• 21:47
Speaker 3: all this stuff is done, but he's he's there and
• 21:49
Speaker 3: somebody walks up to him and they'll say, hey, when
• 21:52
Speaker 3: you sign this. Yes, I saw him with a couple
• 21:55
Speaker 3: of little kids that no way they know who he was,
• 21:59
Speaker 3: you know, but he was so kind to them.
• 22:03
Speaker 7: That it was. It was. It was just amazing.
• 22:06
Speaker 3: It made me feel proud, and it made me and
• 22:10
Speaker 3: it made me think, like, so, if you're not Dante
• 22:13
Speaker 3: colpep r. How do you not sign somebody's paper or
• 22:20
Speaker 3: a hat or or something. You know what I'm saying, Sarah.
• 22:24
Speaker 3: It was just it was for me, it was an
• 22:26
Speaker 3: opportunity to see someone that played the game at a
• 22:31
Speaker 3: very high level but yet could still was so relatable
• 22:37
Speaker 3: and so kind to the public.
• 22:40
  Speaker 7: That it was.
• 22:41
Speaker 3: I mean, it was unbelievable, and I think I think
• 22:44
Speaker 3: the fans enjoyed it. I think they were like probably shocked.
• 22:48
Speaker 3: And then Jim is just like he's just comical like
• 22:53
Speaker 3: the whole time, and his jokes are not anything that
• 22:56
Speaker 3: I could repeat, but they were some of them were good,
• 23:03
Speaker 3: some of them were like, oh, you know, but he
• 23:09
Speaker 3: was such like he was such he was such fun
• 23:12
Speaker 3: that and again someone who you would think, I would
• 23:18
Speaker 3: think would not be overly personable, but he was so
• 23:23
Speaker 3: like he'd come get on, get on if we were
• 23:26
Speaker 3: riding somewhere, were we were on some vands and stuff,
• 23:29
Speaker 3: and he would come over and like he wouldn't sit byself,
• 23:33
Speaker 3: he'd come sit right beside you, and then he nudge
• 23:37
Speaker 3: on you and joke with you, and like like he
• 23:39
Speaker 3: wasn't gonna ride on any of the transportation that we
• 23:42
Speaker 3: had and sit beside you and not talk to you
• 23:46
Speaker 3: and joke and and again. People have their ideas of
• 23:50
Speaker 3: who these guys are and what they might be.
• 23:53
Speaker 9: Like, and and and I and again I even had
• 23:59
Speaker 9: that And it was so amazing to.
• 24:04
Speaker 3: To have to to see guys that had played at
• 24:07
Speaker 3: such a high level be so genuinely kind to players
• 24:13
Speaker 3: they didn't know, sure players they played against the public kids.
• 24:20
Speaker 7: I mean, it was it was unbelievable to me.
• 24:23
Speaker 3: I was I was kind of like starstruck in my
• 24:26
  Speaker 3: own right because I just couldn't imagine, like, I don't
• 24:29
Speaker 3: know what I thought they would be you know, but
• 24:32
Speaker 3: I have seen that before at the high level guys
• 24:35
Speaker 3: that are high level, I've seen guys do that, and
• 24:38
Speaker 3: I was like, guys, man, I'm just curious about how
• 24:41
Speaker 3: they're going to address it.
• 24:42
Speaker 7: And it was so far on the other end of
• 24:45
Speaker 7: it that I was amazed.
• 24:47
Speaker 6: So the football camp part of it, now, how did
• 24:50
Speaker 6: that work? Did they have like just area youth come
• 24:52
Speaker 6: to that, and and did all the participants in the autograph?
• 24:55
Speaker 5: Did you participate in that as well?
• 24:57
Speaker 3: Yes, we had a couple a couple of guys played golf.
• 25:04
Speaker 3: Some of the guys played golf, some of the guys
• 25:06
Speaker 3: did the camp. So some of the some of the younger,
• 25:08
Speaker 3: more mobile guys worked the camp, and some of the
• 25:12
Speaker 3: other guys who have.
• 25:13
Speaker 5: A little bit of what you're saying.
• 25:15
Speaker 3: Not young, just mobile, so I should say young and mobile. Okay, okay, okay,
• 25:22
Speaker 3: So you could if you were one of those, then
• 25:24
Speaker 3: you you work the camp and and we we just
• 25:28
Speaker 3: kind of broke it out into different sections. It's about
• 25:32
Speaker 3: eighty kids or so. Yeah, and every every one of
• 25:37
Speaker 3: the players that were there had an opportunity to kind
• 25:41
Speaker 3: of speak to the kids, talk to them about life
• 25:45
Speaker 3: and sports and all that kind of stuff, whatever they
• 25:48
Speaker 3: whatever they wanted, and I thought that was something that
• 25:52
Speaker 3: was that was really really kind of kind of special.
• 25:55
Speaker 3: So and I'll give this. The gentleman who puts this
• 25:59
Speaker 3: on his name is Buddy Becker. He's the guy that
• 26:03
Speaker 3: contacts everybody, pays everybody gets.
• 26:06
Speaker 7: Their flights, hotel meals, all that kind of stuff.
• 26:11
Speaker 3: You can't like, like, I don't know anybody who does
• 26:15
Speaker 3: that kind of stuff, you know, But he, he and
• 26:20
Speaker 3: another gentleman named Kevin, they have started kind of working
• 26:24
Speaker 3: together doing these kinds of things. And these and the
• 26:27
Speaker 3: areas that we go to are a ways from the
• 26:31
Speaker 3: cities and you know, the Twin Cities, so they're not
• 26:34
Speaker 3: like right down in the cities. We're out and about
• 26:37
Speaker 3: in smaller communities. Yeah, and I think that I think
• 26:41
Speaker 3: that's what's really really important about it, is that we
• 26:44
Speaker 3: get to those communities who.
• 26:45
Speaker 7: Typically don't see players.
• 26:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and then it's so cool to watch
• 26:52
Speaker 3: these young kids who you know, don't know, don't know,
• 26:55
Speaker 3: you don't know anybody.
• 26:56
Speaker 7: There, and just the way they just small when you sign.
• 27:01
Speaker 3: And I mean, so it's really before yes, yes, for sure, Yeah,
• 27:07
  Speaker 3: I'm probably I'm.
• 27:08
Speaker 7: Probably me and me and Jim are probably well Scott
• 27:14
Speaker 7: Studwell was there who was a linebacker for it?
• 27:16
Speaker 5: Do you play against Jim?
• 27:18
Speaker 6: Yes, okay, I couldn't remember if that was the same
• 27:21
  Speaker 6: time period.
• 27:22
Speaker 3: Unfortunately, Yes, somebody asked me. I think I think Dave
• 27:28
Speaker 3: asked me on the show before if I if I
• 27:30
  Speaker 3: had picked them, and I'm like, I don't know. I'm
• 27:34
Speaker 3: gonna have to go back and look at that because
• 27:35
Speaker 3: if I, if I did, I want to make sure
• 27:37
Speaker 3: he knows that the next time.
• 27:39
  Speaker 7: We hook up.
• 27:41
Speaker 5: You need you need to do some research.
• 27:43
Speaker 7: I need to do a little bit of research.
• 27:44
Speaker 3: But I know this. We you know the Bears huge season.
• 27:50
Speaker 3: I don't remember which what season that was, was like
• 27:54
Speaker 3: eight eighty nine or so or late eighties, late eighties.
• 27:59
  Speaker 7: I don't think.
• 28:00
Speaker 3: I don't think that I would have picked them that
• 28:04
Speaker 3: season because I think they were perfect in every category possible.
• 28:08
Speaker 6: So they were still they're still memorable, and you still
• 28:11
  Speaker 6: remember that run.
• 28:12
Speaker 3: I'll make the case to this to this day, I
• 28:16
Speaker 3: think that's probably the best defense and possibly the best team.
• 28:23
Speaker 7: That the league has ever seen.
• 28:26
Speaker 3: Oh no, I'm gonna let me say really I'm going there,
• 28:32
Speaker 3: but let me just say this.
• 28:33
Speaker 6: To the New England Patriots during their era. The let's
• 28:37
Speaker 6: think about the recent Kansas City chief.
• 28:39
  Speaker 3: I get it, I get it. Now, here's what I'm
• 28:41
Speaker 3: going to tell you. Okay, why, here's why I say that. Wow,
• 28:44
Speaker 3: let's hear the why. The physicality of what the Bears
• 28:47
Speaker 3: were then versus what it is today.
• 28:52
Speaker 7: But the rules were different, The rules were different.
• 28:54
Speaker 3: And I'm just saying, if you, if you play the
• 28:56
Speaker 3: Bears in the Bears era, they they don't have no
• 29:00
Speaker 3: problem putting putting my homes on his back and sending
• 29:03
Speaker 3: him to the where he's can't come back. They don't
• 29:07
Speaker 3: have no problem with that. You you, that's a bold statement.
• 29:12
Speaker 3: I know, I know, but and you're staying on your
• 29:18
Speaker 3: business because I just don't know if there was, if
• 29:21
Speaker 3: there's ever going to be a more physical team.
• 29:25
Speaker 7: And then again, their offense was even.
• 29:28
Speaker 5: Physical, Like yeah, they know they were.
• 29:30
Speaker 7: You're right, and so you.
• 29:34
Speaker 3: The great quarterbacks today are mobile and all those kinds
• 29:38
  Speaker 3: of things.
• 29:38
Speaker 7: Sure, but the defensive.
• 29:40
Speaker 3: Lineman, the linebackers you're talking about, Singletary, you're talking about,
• 29:45
Speaker 3: like you, that whole defensive line, that whole defensive secondary,
• 29:50
Speaker 3: like it was an.
• 29:52
Speaker 5: Amazing fans still talk about it.
• 29:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, it would have been early in your career.
• 29:57
Speaker 8: It was actually nineteen eighty five and one Super twenty.
• 30:00
Speaker 6: Yes, okay, okay, the Men eighties, Yeah, we were close.
• 30:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, eighties, eighties, And I'm telling you, I don't think
• 30:10
Speaker 3: to this day when I think about a team, like
• 30:15
Speaker 3: you know, there was some really good teams back then, sure,
• 30:17
Speaker 3: but there was nothing.
• 30:19
Speaker 7: Like that Bears team. There was nothing to me that
• 30:24
  Speaker 7: Bears team was.
• 30:25
Speaker 6: So how old is McMahon now, I think he's I
• 30:29
  Speaker 6: think he's I mean, I can you.
• 30:31
Speaker 3: Look that up because I think I think he's older,
• 30:34
Speaker 3: just a little bit older than me.
• 30:35
Speaker 7: I think he might be just a little bit older
• 30:37
  Speaker 7: than that.
• 30:37
Speaker 6: Because you yeah, that would make sense because you had
• 30:39
Speaker 6: to been really early in your career eighty five, right.
• 30:42
Speaker 7: Yeah, because I came in I got drafted in eighty three.
• 30:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, so you were, so I was just getting it
• 30:48
Speaker 6: just past your rookie year sixty five.
• 30:50
Speaker 3: Now he's sixty five. Yeah, okay, yeah, so he was
• 30:54
Speaker 3: one year ahead of me.
• 30:55
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 30:56
Speaker 3: So and again, like I said, man, you know, getting
• 31:00
Speaker 3: a chance to kind of like hang out be around
• 31:02
Speaker 3: him was was interesting because again he had like he's
• 31:10
Speaker 3: just so much fun, like he's he's never serious.
• 31:13
Speaker 5: We need to get him on this show.
• 31:14
Speaker 3: We can we get we we got a shot at
• 31:15
Speaker 3: it because I got access to him. So yeah, so
• 31:18
Speaker 3: if we can get him and we can get Dante,
• 31:21
Speaker 3: yeah yeah, you know, we would be doing good.
• 31:23
  Speaker 7: We'd have Uh.
• 31:24
Speaker 3: Now, I'm not even gonna go there. We're gonna take
• 31:29
Speaker 3: a quick break and we'll be back.

• 33:01
Speaker 2: Now back into the conversation.
• 33:04
Speaker 3: So I had to take a quick break for us.
• 33:06
Speaker 3: That's something that I probably didn't want to.
• 33:08
Speaker 5: Say, and I wish you would have. It wasn't horrible.
• 33:12
Speaker 6: We were just talking about the beauty of podcasts would
• 33:16
Speaker 6: take care of things like that. So Carl, I know
• 33:19
Speaker 6: some conversations we've had in our text threads with Hollis,
• 33:23
Speaker 6: and we miss Hollis because I know he would have
• 33:24
Speaker 6: had a lot to say about this subject.
• 33:26
  Speaker 5: But some of.
• 33:27
Speaker 6: The things that we were talking about is training camps
• 33:31
Speaker 6: and how for some players it is something that they
• 33:36
Speaker 6: either they don't enjoy, or they don't complete, or they
• 33:40
Speaker 6: get really frustrated with, or.
• 33:42
Speaker 5: Some don't even show up.
• 33:43
Speaker 6: So you know, those things tell us a little bit
• 33:46
Speaker 6: about your experiences with training camps and what you see today.
• 33:49
Speaker 3: I missed two days two days of training camp because
• 33:56
Speaker 3: of my contract, of all of the contracts that I signed,
• 34:01
  Speaker 3: which is.
• 34:01
Speaker 5: One of the major reasons.
• 34:02
Speaker 3: Why a lot of players it has got it has
• 34:05
  Speaker 3: become something that.
• 34:07
Speaker 5: You can use to get out of.
• 34:09
Speaker 3: It, get out of training camp. But back then, you
• 34:14
Speaker 3: really didn't want to not go to camp unless you
• 34:18
Speaker 3: were truly comfortable with being at a position that.
• 34:23
Speaker 7: You knew that you were going to be.
• 34:24
  Speaker 5: Like Aaron quarterback.
• 34:26
Speaker 7: Yes, if if if.
• 34:29
Speaker 3: You're unsure of where you're you know whether or not
• 34:31
Speaker 3: you're going to start, you're coming to training camp. I
• 34:34
Speaker 3: don't care what the contract issue is because you've got
• 34:38
Speaker 3: to show up, you know. And but I think now,
• 34:42
Speaker 3: I think when you look at what is.
• 34:44
Speaker 5: It six weeks it was technically it was.
• 34:47
Speaker 7: I always thought it was four. It was four weeks for.
• 34:49
Speaker 6: Us extended it. But if if well, that may be true.
• 34:57
Speaker 6: But if they have extended it, I'm sure that it
• 34:59
Speaker 6: is not at the same level level of what it
• 35:03
Speaker 6: was in four weeks. Yeah, because you're talking about again
• 35:07
Speaker 6: this type of heat. If you know, if this type
• 35:09
Speaker 6: of heat is out there, you're still practicing and you're
• 35:12
Speaker 6: still going full gear.
• 35:13
Speaker 7: And now do you get a break?
• 35:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, you get a couple more breaks, but still in
• 35:19
Speaker 3: this kind of heat and training camp is is the
• 35:24
Speaker 3: deciding factor of whether or not you're going to play?
• 35:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, is it once or twice a day?
• 35:30
Speaker 3: It's twice a day you'll do We did. We did
• 35:34
Speaker 3: two weeks of two a days back in the day,
• 35:38
Speaker 3: and then we go to one day, one a day
• 35:42
Speaker 3: as we got closer to the end. And those too
• 35:45
Speaker 3: A days, I mean, they were they were, they were tough.
• 35:49
Speaker 3: But at that point when you come out of the
• 35:52
Speaker 3: two to day's sessions, you're probably either somewhat close to kind.
• 35:57
  Speaker 7: Of figuring out.
• 35:58
Speaker 3: The coaches are pretty much trying to figure out who's
• 36:02
Speaker 3: going to be playing and who's going to be starting,
• 36:05
Speaker 3: who's going to be here, who's going to be there,
• 36:07
Speaker 3: and it's starting to kind of pan out to them
• 36:10
Speaker 3: at that point now. And I say that because if
• 36:16
Speaker 3: you're going to a camp, training camp, camp period, high school, college,
• 36:24
Speaker 3: it's really important to show everything that you got as
• 36:30
Speaker 3: quick as you possibly can, because you know, if you're
• 36:35
Speaker 3: looking to get you know, there's guys that are starters,
• 36:37
Speaker 3: who have acculades, who've started for five years, ten years, whatever,
• 36:41
Speaker 3: you know, and you're trying to get it on the
• 36:44
Speaker 3: field right. You're getting on the field basically because of
• 36:49
Speaker 3: training camp, because once training camp's over, unless that guy
• 36:53
Speaker 3: is they want, they know who they want. And the
• 36:56
Speaker 3: guys who are playing, unless they're really playing bad or
• 37:01
Speaker 3: they're just not helping the team, or you're close to
• 37:07
Speaker 3: that player's talent, you're gonna likely to get some some snaps,
• 37:12
Speaker 3: which is my situation. To get to play was the
• 37:16
Speaker 3: opportunity a guy got hurt and decided not to take
• 37:22
Speaker 3: a shot, and Bud Grant gave me, gave me the start,
• 37:29
Speaker 3: and I think I've said this before, and I get
• 37:32
Speaker 3: a game winning interception against Detroit and that was the
• 37:36
Speaker 3: beginning of my career. And that was that was in
• 37:38
Speaker 3: my third year. That was the beginning of my career
• 37:41
Speaker 3: of finding success in the NFL. My rookie season, I
• 37:46
Speaker 3: got an opportunity to play and I moved positions the
• 37:53
Speaker 3: second year back to safety. So and I didn't start
• 37:56
Speaker 3: in the beginning of the season there either, but I
• 37:59
Speaker 3: quickly he moved back because safety was a different position.
• 38:03
  Speaker 3: I thought I was a safety because that's what I
• 38:05
Speaker 3: was in college in high school. And I was like thinking, like, Okay,
• 38:08
Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna let me go back to what.
• 38:11
Speaker 7: I started to know. Yeah, and I went back.
• 38:18
Speaker 5: And it was a little different.
• 38:21
Speaker 3: The guys who were breaking through the line of scrimmage
• 38:24
Speaker 3: did not look like what they looked like when I
• 38:26
  Speaker 3: was at Marshall.
• 38:29
Speaker 5: Don't let me get yeah, I had a.
• 38:32
Speaker 3: They were not small and I we talked about Jim McMahon,
• 38:35
Speaker 3: I'll talk and maybe I've told this story before, but
• 38:39
Speaker 3: Walter Payton actually broke through the line of scrimmage and
• 38:46
Speaker 3: I'm at safety and never in my childhood.
• 38:52
Speaker 7: Of all the dreaming of playing in the league.
• 38:56
Speaker 3: That's not the scenario that I ever ever kay on
• 39:00
Speaker 3: my mind, and I will never forget it. So I'm looking,
• 39:04
Speaker 3: I'm looking, and it just it just blows open, right,
• 39:08
Speaker 3: and I'm like, okay, one thing, I for sure he
• 39:12
Speaker 3: is not gonna change his direction for me, so you know,
• 39:17
Speaker 3: like there's no reason for him to think like he's
• 39:19
Speaker 3: gonna shake and bake and and go.
• 39:22
Speaker 7: Around me or anything.
• 39:24
Speaker 3: This was his opportunity to say, Okay, I am Walter Payton,
• 39:28
Speaker 3: welcome to the league.
• 39:30
Speaker 7: And I'm like thinking, okay. So I'm looking at.
• 39:34
Speaker 3: Him, and I'm like thinking, okay, he's not gonna come
• 39:37
Speaker 3: off course, so I can just go ahead and just
• 39:39
Speaker 3: run right at him and we'll just see what's happening. Lisa,
• 39:44
Speaker 3: Like I'm on my way there, and I'm and again
• 39:48
Speaker 3: I'm thinking maybe Marshall.
• 39:49
Speaker 7: I'm thinking maybe high school.
• 39:51
Speaker 3: Like, hey, I'm gonna make this play. I do make
• 39:55
Speaker 3: the tackle, but when I make contact with him, it's like.
• 40:01
Speaker 7: I hit I hit him, and it was like hitting
• 40:04
  Speaker 7: a wall.
• 40:05
Speaker 3: So my whole body, my whole body just stopped and
• 40:13
Speaker 3: I'm like, Okay, what's happening here?
• 40:15
Speaker 7: Like you know what's right.
• 40:17
Speaker 3: No, he's not going down and he's continuing to move forward.
• 40:21
Speaker 7: Now I can feel myself on my heels, and.
• 40:24
Speaker 3: I'm thinking, okay, I am getting ready to go fall over.
• 40:30
Speaker 7: I am not anymore.
• 40:34
Speaker 3: He hits me, and the only way he falls is
• 40:37
Speaker 3: because I'm falling down. I'm falling backwards and he's trying
• 40:41
Speaker 3: to run through me, and he trips over me and
• 40:45
Speaker 3: falls And I realized, then, okay, you know there's there's
• 40:51
Speaker 3: there is a time when you say, okay, I'm in
• 40:53
Speaker 3: the NFL. Yes, that was a time that I realized that, okay,
• 40:59
Speaker 3: this is this is this is different. Can I coach?
• 41:02
Speaker 3: Can I play corner?
• 41:07
Speaker 5: I just had this great idea. I really I think
• 41:13
Speaker 5: I should probably say no question.
• 41:14
  Speaker 3: I think I am a better corner than a safety.
• 41:17
Speaker 7: Well, you mean to tell me you would have rather
• 41:20
Speaker 7: been lined up against Terry Rice twice? I would take
• 41:26
  Speaker 7: Jerry Rice.
• 41:27
Speaker 3: I would take any receiver in the league instead of
• 41:35
Speaker 3: that tackle with Peyton. I'd almost be willing to set
• 41:40
Speaker 3: the corner on the gold line with a guard coming
• 41:44
Speaker 3: to blow me up.
• 41:45
Speaker 5: He's saying he ate some humble pip. Yeah.
• 41:47
Speaker 7: Well, running running backs were built different. I mean they
• 41:51
  Speaker 7: were bigger than.
• 41:52
Speaker 3: And their mindset with the mindset was different, you know,
• 41:56
Speaker 3: and you had the big safeties you had easily you
• 41:59
Speaker 3: had like there was all these Ronnie Lott you had
• 42:05
Speaker 3: all these huge safeties that would just knock your head off.
• 42:08
Speaker 7: And corners were little physical. We was kind of physical.
• 42:11
Speaker 3: But we were playing man and man and and that
• 42:14
Speaker 3: was the kind of the that was.
• 42:15
  Speaker 7: You know.
• 42:16
Speaker 11: So we were chasing receivers and hitting receivers and then
• 42:21
Speaker 11: unfortunately for me, for whatever whatever call we had on
• 42:26
Speaker 11: the defensive side, it was not the right calling.
• 42:34
Speaker 5: I have to go back and look at these tapes.
• 42:36
Speaker 3: Oh look, I'm just telling you they it's the game
• 42:41
Speaker 3: was just different, you know. It was it was and
• 42:44
  Speaker 3: I don't mean this in a bad way, like there's
• 42:46
Speaker 3: not men there now, but back then it was it
• 42:50
Speaker 3: was men really wanting to dominate other men. And and
• 42:54
Speaker 3: the Bears, that Bears team was so full of it.
• 42:59
Speaker 3: Like they they they knew what they had, you know,
• 43:02
Speaker 3: they had this pressure defense.
• 43:05
Speaker 5: That they had no fear.
• 43:06
Speaker 3: They had no fear, and they were doing everything that
• 43:09
Speaker 3: they liked, right, you know. And again a few years
• 43:13
Speaker 3: later we end up going to some bumping, we go
• 43:17
Speaker 3: when we go, Pete Carroll comes in, we go to
• 43:19
Speaker 3: bump and run, and we've got Chris Dowman, Keith Millard,
• 43:24
Speaker 3: Henry Thomas, all these guys that could rush the passer. Sure,
• 43:28
Speaker 3: all of a sudden, now we're that team, you know.
• 43:31
Speaker 3: So it was that it was time where each each
• 43:35
Speaker 3: team was building defenses, like you had to have a
• 43:38
Speaker 3: defense that had something going, and so quarterbacks feared our
• 43:43
Speaker 3: d line and that helped us out on the on
• 43:46
Speaker 3: the edges of playing man the man.
• 43:48
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 43:49
Speaker 6: You know, it's funny how the Pendulums have have swung
• 43:51
Speaker 6: from a defensive focus to now it's more of an
• 43:54
Speaker 6: offensive focus. Don't you feel like in this day as
• 43:57
Speaker 6: absolutely all about the quarterback and the running back and
• 44:00
Speaker 6: and what the offense produces.
• 44:01
Speaker 3: I think that's because of the excitement of the fans
• 44:05
Speaker 3: who want it's what the fans want. And again, I
• 44:09
Speaker 3: don't know where the fans stopped loving the defense, and
• 44:13
Speaker 3: I don't know if they stopped and just but they
• 44:16
  Speaker 3: just decided that.
• 44:19
Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think for a fan that's not truly
• 44:22
Speaker 6: understanding the game, they're not going to be as appreciative
• 44:25
Speaker 6: of the defensive game.
• 44:26
Speaker 5: As they are the offense, because the offense is you know.
• 44:28
Speaker 6: Exciting to touchdown running, and they don't appreciate, you know,
• 44:33
Speaker 6: a defensive type of game.
• 44:35
Speaker 5: As a fan that understands it.
• 44:37
Speaker 7: I think, I think you're spot on. And I think too.
• 44:43
Speaker 3: To to look at a let's say, a corner cover
• 44:48
Speaker 3: receiver is not overly exciting.
• 44:51
  Speaker 7: You know.
• 44:51
Speaker 3: Now you know, if that guy's on your you know,
• 44:54
Speaker 3: if that's a guy you're rooting or the team that
• 44:56
Speaker 3: you're rooting on, he knocks the ball down, you're like, okay, cool,
• 44:59
Speaker 3: second and long. You don't really you're not focused on
• 45:03
Speaker 3: that sexy. It's not it's not really sexy. It's just
• 45:07
Speaker 3: and again, you go back in those days, so many
• 45:11
Speaker 3: people were playing bump and run. The fans liked it
• 45:16
Speaker 3: because you're in most cases you're blitzing and you've got
• 45:19
Speaker 3: guys coming all over the place. Quarterbacks are getting knocked around. Yeah,
• 45:23
Speaker 3: and the and the fans love that kind of stuff.
• 45:26
Speaker 3: And now it's just it just is it's a lot,
• 45:29
  Speaker 3: it's a lot different.
• 45:30
Speaker 6: Well, the quarterbacks are protected more now than right there,
• 45:33
Speaker 6: right and right, Lisa, Yeah, they have to be, but
• 45:36
Speaker 6: still at during that time period, they didn't have nearly
• 45:40
Speaker 6: the protections that they do now, and so they got
• 45:42
  Speaker 6: hit pretty hard.
• 45:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, and and and I make the case to get
• 45:46
Speaker 3: a to get a flag on the quarterback, you really
• 45:49
Speaker 3: truly have to be late. But anything else, like if
• 45:54
Speaker 3: you if you're before the whistle, everything was good all yeah,
• 46:00
Speaker 3: and you know, and there was you know, there was
• 46:02
Speaker 3: like like the diving on the pal you know, it
• 46:06
Speaker 3: is like just a little crack that you can get
• 46:08
Speaker 3: your helmet in. You were diving in and that was okay,
• 46:15
Speaker 3: but imagine, imagine, And this is this is why I think.
• 46:18
Speaker 6: Probably encouraged even yes, I mean, if it was legal,
• 46:22
Speaker 6: your sage probably said, go for it.
• 46:23
Speaker 3: If you could get a guy out of the game,
• 46:26
Speaker 3: you know, if you could get a guy out of
• 46:27
Speaker 3: the game that's that can beat you, then yeah, more
• 46:31
Speaker 3: power to you. Right that now they have to come
• 46:34
Speaker 3: up and try to replace that player. So it and
• 46:38
Speaker 3: I think the further back you go, I think the
• 46:41
Speaker 3: more physical the game was. And again to your point
• 46:46
Speaker 3: about rules and regulations that you can't do this, you
• 46:49
Speaker 3: can't do that, I think that has.
• 46:54
Speaker 7: Changed the way the game.
• 46:55
Speaker 5: Looks, and it needed to.
• 47:00
Speaker 6: I think we've kind of gone overboard with it, maybe
• 47:03
Speaker 6: a little further than we needed to, but definitely some
• 47:05
Speaker 6: changes needed to happen.
• 47:07
Speaker 3: And I hate, I hate to say this, but like
• 47:10
Speaker 3: I just think, like the guys in the secondary, yeah,
• 47:14
Speaker 3: just don't not everybody, not all of them, but there's
• 47:17
Speaker 3: a lot who just they don't tackle like you know,
• 47:21
Speaker 3: they don't do the they don't have the physicality in
• 47:24
Speaker 3: their mindset. They knocked the ball, they knocked the ball down.
• 47:28
Speaker 3: They don't necessarily want to make the tackle. If it's
• 47:31
Speaker 3: a running back coming at you, they don't necessarily want
• 47:33
Speaker 3: to make that or they don't look like they want
• 47:35
  Speaker 3: to make it.
• 47:36
Speaker 8: Do you think maybe the leagues maybe build a little
• 47:39
Speaker 8: bit more around speed you've got, I mean like running
• 47:42
Speaker 8: backs that are also potentially a receiver, like I think
• 47:46
Speaker 8: about like Christian McCaffrey, or you've got like Travis Kelcey
• 47:49
Speaker 8: the tight end spot.
• 47:50
Speaker 7: I mean he's really just a giant receiver receiver.
• 47:53
Speaker 8: Yeah, you get all these people out of the box
• 47:55
Speaker 8: and running down the fields. So for one, that's going
• 47:58
Speaker 8: to give you more of that protection you look at
• 48:00
Speaker 8: on the quarterback, But it's just everybody running everywhere and
• 48:03
Speaker 8: you never know where the ball is going to go.
• 48:04
Speaker 3: When you talk about Kelsey, like the crazy thing about
• 48:07
Speaker 3: that there were a few tight ends. We actually had
• 48:10
Speaker 3: one Steve Jordan, who was so athletic that no linebacker
• 48:15
Speaker 3: could really cover him. And and then the other problem
• 48:19
Speaker 3: is they're too big for me, you know what I'm saying.
• 48:22
Speaker 3: So those kind of guys now are amazing because you
• 48:28
Speaker 3: you can't find anybody that can cover him. You can't
• 48:30
Speaker 3: put a corner on them because they're too big. They're
• 48:33
Speaker 3: bigger there mighty. I mean, they might as well be
• 48:36
  Speaker 3: an offensive tackle.
• 48:38
Speaker 8: Well, who wants to tackle the guy that's six foot
• 48:40
  Speaker 8: seven and pounds.
• 48:42
Speaker 3: No, I mean unless you're alignment. Unless you're alignment, you know,
• 48:49
Speaker 3: you might be okay with that. But he's down the field,
• 48:52
Speaker 3: he's not going to be nowhere near you to have contact.
• 48:55
Speaker 3: And then be him knowing you're that size and who
• 49:00
Speaker 3: and knowing that no one wants to hitch he's looking
• 49:02
Speaker 3: for a Yeah he's got he's trying to make a highlight. Yes,
• 49:09
Speaker 3: I'm trying to stay out of the highlight, and he's
• 49:11
  Speaker 3: trying to make.
• 49:11
Speaker 5: Trying to make one.
• 49:12
  Speaker 7: Yeah, it's it's.
• 49:13
Speaker 3: It's interesting just to see the size of guys playing
• 49:20
Speaker 3: and and now playing a position. You know, you got
• 49:24
Speaker 3: him at running back, you got you know, you got
• 49:27
Speaker 3: a good average size of probably six two six three
• 49:31
Speaker 3: probably at wide receiver now with amazing speed and now
• 49:36
Speaker 3: you're talking about a six six sixty seven tight end speed.
• 49:40
Speaker 6: That's just that's just the way it is every position
• 49:43
Speaker 6: now pretty much in the NFL.
• 49:44
  Speaker 5: That's a fact speed.
• 49:46
Speaker 7: Do you think their agilities may be better than what
• 49:48
Speaker 7: it was? Absolutely? I think in this day and time.
• 49:52
Speaker 3: If if there's anything that the league has, anything that
• 49:55
Speaker 3: the players have and a true advantage on is there
• 49:59
Speaker 3: everybody the whole group is way more athletic, a whole
• 50:04
Speaker 3: lot faster and and I think that in the game
• 50:11
Speaker 3: now you're looking at that on offense and defense all
• 50:13
Speaker 3: at the same time, you know, and the game is
• 50:16
Speaker 3: just faster now, it's just more athletic.
• 50:19
Speaker 6: And you've got to attribute that just the science of football.
• 50:22
Speaker 6: I mean, they've learned so much about you know, physical
• 50:24
Speaker 6: training and preparation and bodybuilding and all the things that
• 50:28
Speaker 6: are required to get to that athletic, you know level,
• 50:32
Speaker 6: and they have it now.
• 50:33
Speaker 5: They have all that.
• 50:34
Speaker 3: Well you look at you look at quarterbacks. That quote
• 50:37
Speaker 3: used to scramble. You look at those quarterbacks, okay, and
• 50:40
Speaker 3: they were they were magical. They were like, oh my gosh,
• 50:43
Speaker 3: did you see stallback?
• 50:45
  Speaker 7: You know?
• 50:46
Speaker 5: But now that's common.
• 50:48
Speaker 3: It's yeah, and and and some of these guys are
• 50:52
Speaker 3: amazingly athletic and making people miss. And you're thinking, that's
• 50:59
  Speaker 3: a quarterback. That's not a running back.
• 51:01
  Speaker 7: You know.
• 51:03
Speaker 3: You know, when did a quarterback get to like to
• 51:06
Speaker 3: be like a Patrick Mahomes.
• 51:07
Speaker 7: Like, how's that pass?
• 51:09
Speaker 5: How the game's evolved?
• 51:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, but that is truly how the game has evolved.
• 51:12
  Speaker 3: And it's and it's to me, I think it's just
• 51:15
  Speaker 3: gonna keep going.
• 51:16
Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, so we say anything else.
• 51:21
  Speaker 5: I think that's it.
• 51:22
Speaker 6: We somehow jumped from training camps. But that's okay. We
• 51:25
Speaker 6: made a good comeback with our subject at the end.
• 51:27
  Speaker 5: So we're good. We're good.
