- 0:17Speaker 1: Times in Babylon fun times speaking of which let's get
- 0:31Speaker 1: to some fun movie talk with Nazis and stuff so
- 0:37Speaker 1: I did when we were throwing out fun Nazi titles
- 0:39Speaker 1: because I went through the um the recent things i've
- 0:44Speaker 1: come across in the real world which is going back
- 0:46Speaker 1: a ways now and there really wasn't anything good that
- 0:49Speaker 1: tied in so the only one i brought up recently
- 0:51Speaker 1: i guess was gonna be my sort of threat have
- 0:54Speaker 1: you seen the keep no see it's one of those
- 0:57Speaker 1: i and that's why i'm using it as a threat
- 0:59Speaker 1: because i don't really feel like we need to watch
- 1:02Speaker 1: it like i heard about it for years and then
- 1:05Speaker 1: i finally like in the last two years or so
- 1:08Speaker 1: watched it and i was like oh hey it's fine
- 1:10Speaker 1: like It's cool, but again, I don't think it has
- 1:12Speaker 1: the budget to do what it probably should do. But
- 1:16Speaker 1: it's early Michael Mann, which is cool. Doesn't really feel
- 1:19Speaker 1: like a Michael Mann movie, but... So yeah, The Keep
- 1:23Speaker 1: is a 1983 film, and Nazis are forced to turn
- 1:27Speaker 1: to a Jewish historian for help in battling the ancient
- 1:31Speaker 1: demon they have inadvertently freed from its prison. Sounds pretty cool.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I do not hate that idea.
- 1:39Speaker 3: No, that's the thing.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It's a cool concept. And basically what's going on is cool.
- 1:43Speaker 2: But again, I think. The original director's cut was 210
- 1:47Speaker 2: minutes long.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I think I went in. Again, having heard about it,
- 1:50Speaker 1: it was always one of those people be like, oh man,
- 1:52Speaker 1: it's like super underrated. People forget about this movie. And
- 1:55Speaker 1: then I finally watched it and was like, I think
- 1:57Speaker 1: it got built up a little too much. Because then
- 1:59Speaker 1: I was like, I just kind of wanted more from
- 2:02Speaker 1: that scenario. Like that sounds like the kind of thing.
- 2:06Speaker 1: You would really kind of dig into.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I don't know, man. There's a lot of reading you
- 2:09Speaker 2: got to do just on the poster.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. That's not a good sign.
- 2:14Speaker 1: There's probably some Yiddish they had to translate to. There's
- 2:17Speaker 1: probably reading in the movie is what I'm saying.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I don't really remember.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I just expected more from a giant monster or something.
- 2:23Speaker 2: To show up. And they were all drawn to the keep.
- 2:26Speaker 2: The soldiers who brought death. The father and daughter fighting
- 2:28Speaker 2: for life. The people who've always feared it. And the
- 2:31Speaker 2: man who knows its secrets. Tonight, they all face the.
- 2:35Speaker 3: You're not done yet.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Wait.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Still going.
- 2:38Speaker 2: That's it.
- 2:39Speaker 3: At the bottom, it says, see other side. So you
- 2:41Speaker 3: have to take it off the wall, flip it around.
- 2:44Speaker 1: So like I was saying, anyway, about Nazis.
- 2:47Speaker 3: That's not a very good tagline. Not really. Not very catchy.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Not catchy. So that's at least throwing out a movie option.
- 2:58Speaker 1: We'll get back to that threat later.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I also like to use these as a.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Good way to have some sort of weird conversation. So
- 3:05Speaker 1: this was mine and it doesn't really tie in with
- 3:09Speaker 1: this week's episode, but in a general way, it leads
- 3:13Speaker 1: me to a question I wanted to ask. And usually
- 3:15Speaker 1: we use you as the example for all of an
- 3:19Speaker 1: entire group of people, Nora. So I was watching a
- 3:22Speaker 1: movie this weekend and I'm watching it and I won't
- 3:25Speaker 1: even out the movie. Doesn't really matter, but.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It's really well done for what it's doing.
- 3:32Speaker 1: But it's a very guy-centric movie, and there are three
- 3:38Speaker 1: female actresses-type people in the whole movie, and man, they
- 3:43Speaker 1: are treated like shit. So, I mean, literally, it's a
- 3:47Speaker 1: period piece, so some of them are property and referred
- 3:50Speaker 1: to that way, and there's a good amount of physical
- 3:53Speaker 1: violence thrown in their face, literally, sometimes. So.
- 3:58Speaker 1: My question was going to be, cause in the end
- 4:00Speaker 1: I'm like, well, this is really well done.
- 4:02Speaker 3: This is good.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But even I, as the horrible man person that I
- 4:07Speaker 1: supposedly am, I'm still like, still kind of a uneasy
- 4:11Speaker 1: feeling that knowing that like, this is all we have
- 4:14Speaker 1: to represent womankind.
- 4:16Speaker 3: And you guys treat them all like shit. Like, so
- 4:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Do you watch movies that treat women horribly and you're
- 4:25Speaker 1: okay with it at any point? Like, again, can you
- 4:28Speaker 1: think of them like, this is a masterpiece, I love it. Oh,
- 4:31Speaker 1: by the way, every female character is treated horribly.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Um, I guess it, well, uh, short answer, no.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Again, that's why I was like, it starts to factor in,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I guess, if you're not a complete Neanderthal. I don't
- 4:47Speaker 1: know that I've graduated from that yet, but at least
- 4:50Speaker 1: enough that it occurs to me now, that I'm like...
- 4:53Speaker 1: I watched this a million years ago when it came
- 4:55Speaker 1: out and I was like, cool, this is great. And
- 4:56Speaker 1: like now I don't know that I've grown any, but
- 4:58Speaker 1: I at least had enough of a thought to go, wow,
- 5:01Speaker 1: that's not cool though.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I was like, so I don't know.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It just made me wonder if, if there's, if you
- 5:10Speaker 1: have to detach yourself in some way. And I feel
- 5:12Speaker 1: like there kind of is in general, if it becomes like,
- 5:16Speaker 1: cause this one was semi-modern, but a period piece. So
- 5:20Speaker 1: if it's a period piece, how authentic do you need
- 5:23Speaker 1: to be? Because women have been treated like shit. Not
- 5:26Speaker 1: that it's much better now, but going back however far
- 5:30Speaker 1: you want to go in history, it gets worse. So
- 5:32Speaker 1: I'm like, are we supposed to represent this properly? And
- 5:36Speaker 1: then if the movie itself is really old, I'm like, well,
- 5:38Speaker 1: now you're just reflecting the world it was shot in.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I mean, I think there's nuance and it depends on...
- 5:47Speaker 4: the director and do these characters have any other life
- 5:53Speaker 4: and purpose outside of being beat up and treated horribly
- 5:57Speaker 4: or is that just their thing? But yeah, speaking more generally,
- 6:03Speaker 4: I have very little patience for that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That's kind of what I've seen in the movies we've
- 6:07Speaker 1: watched for the show. That's why I was like, is
- 6:12Speaker 1: there some sort of loophole somewhere that you can escape
- 6:15Speaker 1: through and be like, But other than all the, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: horrible treatment of women, this movie's great.
- 6:21Speaker 4: I especially, I get really annoyed with it when Game
- 6:24Speaker 4: of Thrones was really big. Because people would be like, well,
- 6:27Speaker 4: it's set in the past, so all of this violence
- 6:30Speaker 4: is realistic. And I'm like, there's dragons.
- 6:34Speaker 3: There's magic. It's also not really the past. There's wizards. Like,
- 6:37Speaker 3: why do we care about historical accuracy?
- 6:40Speaker 2: I don't see what you're complaining about.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Well, especially not with the dragons part.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Because those work. They were cool, but I didn't have
- 6:46Speaker 3: to watch a bunch of people.
- 6:46Speaker 1: No, they were real.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 2: There's at least one church in Europe that has what
- 6:51Speaker 2: is purported to be a dragon bone hanging from the ceiling.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Well, this is... So, yeah, what are you going to
- 6:57Speaker 3: do there?
- 6:57Speaker 1: To distract from your actual intelligent point. That is one
- 7:01Speaker 1: of those things that I think is interesting, and I've
- 7:03Speaker 1: had other people bring it up before, that it is
- 7:06Speaker 1: one of the few things in all culture, there's a
- 7:09Speaker 1: version of that. Yeah. So... at a time thousands of
- 7:13Speaker 1: years ago when everyone was separated by oceans and didn't
- 7:16Speaker 1: have crossover of cultures they all had their own version
- 7:19Speaker 1: of a dragon more or less in whatever civilization it
- 7:23Speaker 1: was and I'm like.
- 7:24Speaker 3: That is kind of interesting.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Just because it shouldn't be like that like now you
- 7:29Speaker 1: know internet connects everybody but like you didn't have much
- 7:32Speaker 1: of a wifi signal back in the old timey days
- 7:36Speaker 1: if you pay enough you know you get a good
- 7:38Speaker 1: bounce off of it but yeah anyway Now back to
- 7:41Speaker 1: whatever your actual intelligence thought was.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Aside from dragons and shit. I don't know. That's it.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I'm tired.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I'm tired all the time.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I certainly understand that one. That one crosses all barriers.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Everybody's just tired at this point.
- 8:07Speaker 3: I want to see some women beat up some shitty
- 8:09Speaker 3: dudes there.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I'll make some calls.
- 8:12Speaker 3: That's my kind of movie.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I was going to say, there's some movies. You've got
- 8:15Speaker 1: to find the right ones. It takes a little more digging.
- 8:18Speaker 1: The other way, there's a lot more.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Well, not to.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Skip ahead, but the women in our movie this week
- 8:23Speaker 2: really stuck together.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Well, that's not what I'm talking about.
- 8:27Speaker 1: They'll hear about that later. We'll say many things about that.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Kind of like this. I really liked what was going on.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It is weird that it's kind of two movies. Like
- 8:43Speaker 1: that first half is its own short film almost.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And that is so well done.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Like I feel like I love the first half and
- 8:51Speaker 1: like I'm fine with the second half.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's well made and it's intriguing. My own, my thing
- 8:56Speaker 2: about it was just, I just have so many questions
- 9:00Speaker 2: that I feel like it would take a whole series of,
- 9:03Speaker 2: of other movies to answer.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Speaking of biting things. I thought you were about to
- 9:10Speaker 3: bite his arm. Nope.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Brace yourself.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Here it comes.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Chomp. I mean, eating people's fine, but I don't like
- 9:17Speaker 1: singling out specific groups.
- 9:19Speaker 2: In a way, I kind of wish that's how the
- 9:21Speaker 2: movie ended.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I would feel a lot better if that's how the
- 9:25Speaker 2: movie had gone.
- 9:25Speaker 3: It was very, yeah, unfortunately realistic.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It was too realistic.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I don't know how to read.
- 9:34Speaker 2: It's more of an autobiography than it is an adaptation
- 9:37Speaker 2: of the novel. Because I read the novel and I
- 9:39Speaker 2: was like, how the hell do you turn this into
- 9:41Speaker 2: a movie?
- 9:41Speaker 1: Exactly. Apparently you don't. You watch that movie and you're like,
- 9:44Speaker 1: how the hell is this a book? It neither seems
- 9:47Speaker 1: to make sense, really.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And it's okay. It's fun. It's fun.
- 9:54Speaker 2: There's no heavy lifting involved in that movie at all.
- 9:57Speaker 1: There are certain ones that are so good at... doing
- 10:00Speaker 1: what they're doing.
- 10:01Speaker 3: And that's one of the, I was like, it's.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Not, it's not highbrow, but what it does, it does
- 10:07Speaker 1: so damn well that I'm just like, if you're a
- 10:10Speaker 1: horror fan, like, dude, this should be for you.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Like there, there are several moments where you're like, how
- 10:15Speaker 2: do you come up with That conclusion, you know, I mean,
- 10:19Speaker 2: the logic of the movie is not great, but if
- 10:24Speaker 2: you're not worried about logic or, you know, plot, it's fun.
- 10:28Speaker 2: It's a fun little movie.
- 10:31Speaker 1: This is also something that occurred to me. I'm like,
- 10:34Speaker 1: this is probably what people need to watch. Because I
- 10:38Speaker 1: think we, especially in the world we live in now,
- 10:41Speaker 1: are very isolated and we're in our own little bubble,
- 10:44Speaker 1: even within... The internet world where we only interact with
- 10:48Speaker 1: people who kind of think like we do. And we
- 10:50Speaker 1: don't know how many people out in the world are
- 10:53Speaker 1: just like this.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it's very like genre bendy, which I'm guessing is
- 11:00Speaker 4: how it made so much money.
- 11:01Speaker 1: At the beginning, I thought it was just like a
- 11:03Speaker 1: drama more or less. And then the more people would
- 11:06Speaker 1: sort of allude to other things going on, I'm like, oh,
- 11:10Speaker 1: maybe not so much.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like southern gothic....
- 11:16Speaker 4: Creepy but then in the second half it becomes a
- 11:19Speaker 4: little action movie-y.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Which I could have done without. I liked where it
- 11:24Speaker 3: was going before that but it's still fun. Fun to watch.
- 11:29Speaker 2: And you know one way that this movie was effective
- 11:33Speaker 2: is it shows you that anyone can rationalize anything. They
- 11:38Speaker 2: just have to try hard enough.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So it's a weird crossover of creepiness and overly sexualized
- 11:48Speaker 1: grossness than you probably needed so yeah it's it's a
- 11:51Speaker 1: lot of weirdness going on there so.
- 11:55Speaker 4: She's in the group at first and she's like i
- 11:58Speaker 4: she's kind of hesitant she's a little bit freaked out
- 12:00Speaker 4: that they're all talking so openly and she's like i
- 12:02Speaker 4: don't know if i should be.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Here like i don't know if i'm that far along
- 12:06Speaker 3: my and then she ends up being.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I am kind of interested where they go i mean
- 12:11Speaker 1: it is almost to the point of ridiculousness on the reboot, requel,
- 12:16Speaker 1: whatever the hell we're doing, legacy sequel. Somebody said if Scream.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Can do it, we can do it. But, I mean,
- 12:21Speaker 2: that's my.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I mean, it's essentially a response to Scream being huge anyway,
- 12:26Speaker 1: so why wouldn't you redo it after they do the
- 12:28Speaker 1: exact same thing with Scream?
- 12:29Speaker 4: And Final Destination. I will say, immediately, I just... You
- 12:35Speaker 4: get bad vibes from that lady. As soon as she's
- 12:37Speaker 4: talking to the kid outside, I was like.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I didn't like the way she looked at the janitor.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I mean, the creatures are awesome.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah, the creatures are awesome.
- 12:46Speaker 1: The creatures are awesome.
- 12:48Speaker 2: The weird man-eating typewriter.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Well, I was going to say there's the typewriter version.
- 12:54Speaker 1: There's like a full-size version. There's one that's a decapitated
- 12:58Speaker 1: head that's also a typewriter.
- 12:59Speaker 3: That's a giant bug.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I think that's what I'm thinking of.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, but there's so many variations on this
- 13:05Speaker 1: weird theme. And then there's one... And.
- 13:09Speaker 3: That's the scary part.
- 13:11Speaker 4: And there's so many chances for them to not keep
- 13:15Speaker 4: escalating and keep it. And the character of the....
- 13:20Speaker 2: No, I did watch that movie one time and I
- 13:22Speaker 2: also did not have a good time. But it was
- 13:24Speaker 2: a different kind of not good time.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Again, to put it in perspective, I'm halfway or so
- 13:31Speaker 1: in and I'm thinking ahead of later I can watch
- 13:35Speaker 1: a movie that'll be fun. I'm already thinking ahead.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I'm like, this is good.
- 13:40Speaker 1: It's quote unquote well made, but I'm just like, later I'll.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Watch a fun movie.
- 13:45Speaker 2: At the 80 minute mark, roughly, actually probably before I
- 13:49Speaker 2: was like, I'm a need a palate cleanser. Yeah.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I was just already looking forward to when it
- 13:53Speaker 1: was over. I was just like, wow.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I will say on a technical standpoint, pretty kick ass.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:01Speaker 2: If your goal, which I think it was, if your
- 14:03Speaker 2: goal was to make people very upset and very uncomfortable,
- 14:06Speaker 2: you succeeded there.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Like the weird understated part of it that creeped me out.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Like as much as the other stuff is very in
- 14:14Speaker 1: your face, but this weird upset that it just ended
- 14:19Speaker 1: there because it's like, okay, cool, I've just.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Been traumatized for an hour and a half and you
- 14:25Speaker 4: get that one shot at the end of like maybe.
- 14:29Speaker 4: And thinking back to what you were saying earlier about
- 14:32Speaker 4: why this movie is important so that people watch these
- 14:36Speaker 4: things and realize how relevant to real life it is,
- 14:40Speaker 4: even more so now than it was three years ago.
- 14:43Speaker 4: But at the same time, do the people who need
- 14:47Speaker 4: to be watching this movie seek out movies like this?
- 14:52Speaker 2: But i think that's our point yeah supposed to.
- 14:56Speaker 1: There is no good answer because that's how life works.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I think it's supposed to remind us that yes this
- 15:01Speaker 2: is wrong this is terrible but hey guess what this
- 15:04Speaker 2: is what's.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Going on so if you want to hear us say
- 15:08Speaker 1: amazing things like that or talk about the keep or
- 15:11Speaker 1: hopefully you'll come up with a better movie for us
- 15:13Speaker 1: to watch because you know the keeps fine and all
- 15:15Speaker 1: but There's other stuff out there you could give us. So,
- 15:18Speaker 1: you know, join the Meltdown Horror Club and give us
- 15:20Speaker 1: a better movie to watch.
- 15:22Speaker 2: You know, I used to jump in and say, or
- 15:23Speaker 2: give us a worse one.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And I don't think I'm going to do that.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I kept thinking, like, one of these times, you're going
- 15:29Speaker 1: to regret that. Oh, I regret it.
- 15:30Speaker 3: And I'm like, we might have hit that point.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Yeah. We might have finally hit the peak of that mountain.
- 15:36Speaker 3: And you're like, nope, fuck that. We pushed somebody. Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So.
- 15:41Speaker 3: We didn't know.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Join the Meltdown Horror Club and give us a good
- 15:46Speaker 1: movie to watch that won't ruin our lives.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I don't even care if it's good. I just want
- 15:50Speaker 2: it to make me feel good when I.
- 15:53Speaker 1: That's true.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Or not even feel good, but just not feel dirty.
- 15:58Speaker 1: The weight of humanity upon your shoulders. The horror that
- 16:03Speaker 1: is life.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Look out, Hollywood, here I come.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Look out, Hollywood, here I come Look out, Hollywood, here
- 16:21Speaker 1: I come
