- 0:24Thank you again to everyone that supports Grand Touring Motorsports,
- 0:27our podcast, Brake Fix, and all the other services we provide.
- 0:33Which sadly brings us into our favorite section used to be
- 0:38called a side of golden nuggets.
- 0:40It was, would you like fries with that?
- 0:42It's changed names several times, but now thankfully it's called we would be remiss.
- 0:49So Tanya, what would we be remiss about this month?
- 0:52If we didn't talk about it, we would be remiss.
- 0:57So I don't want to cover this one, but it's here.
- 1:02So we would much like Brad doesn't want to cover Corvettes.
- 1:06You get stuck with Tesla's now that's your thing.
- 1:09And I'm fine with that.
- 1:11It's just.
- 1:12The latest gimmick that they're doing, you know, some people think it's quite clever.
- 1:18There's those that would say genius.
- 1:21I have a different definition for something that's genius.
- 1:25Being able to say open butthole for my electric charger door to pop
- 1:32open to me as a Fully formed adult is not genius for a 12 year old.
- 1:39Yes.
- 1:40I could see this being quite hysterical.
- 1:43Thank you for bringing this to us.
- 1:46And you know, some people might think, Oh, this is just a joke.
- 1:49It came out in April, April fools.
- 1:51No, I fully believe this is no joke because I have ridden in
- 1:57a Tesla with the fart sounds turned on for the turn signals.
- 2:03So instead of click click click, so this is completely on par.
- 2:10with something musk would do.
- 2:12So I fully believe that you can say open butthole.
- 2:15Oh, but it gets better because if you watch the video that accompanies
- 2:19this particular episode, a gentleman goes through and reviews this
- 2:22particular voice command feature.
- 2:24There are variants to it.
- 2:26If you say open butthole, it opens the charge port.
- 2:29If you say close butthole, it closes the charge port.
- 2:32If you say open My butthole, it will open the trunk.
- 2:37Did you know that?
- 2:39You also want to know why this isn't genius?
- 2:43If we're going to anthropomorphize a vehicle, its butthole would
- 2:49not be on the side of it.
- 2:52Where energy is going into.
- 2:54Thank you.
- 2:54That's, that's my, my, that was going to be my point.
- 2:57It shouldn't be open butthole.
- 2:59It should be put it in your mouth.
- 3:03Oh yeah.
- 3:03Because that makes it better.
- 3:05I mean, this is the mouth also isn't on the side.
- 3:08If you were going to like it, the mouth is where fuel and energy goes in.
- 3:13I don't know.
- 3:14I mean, personally, I think this is just foreplay and dirty
- 3:18talk between Elon and Grimes.
- 3:19And they just kind of translate it into.
- 3:23You know, Tesla production, somebody, he probably was, you know, getting
- 3:27down with, with grimes and, uh, he, but dialed somebody in, uh, somebody
- 3:34at work, you heard him say, Oh yeah, open your butthole, open your butthole.
- 3:37And they're like, Okay, I guess we'll implement that into the Yes, Mr.
- 3:43Musk.
- 3:44Yes, Mr.
- 3:44Musk.
- 3:45Right away, Mr.
- 3:45Musk.
- 3:45We'll take care of that.
- 3:46I mean, clearly it sells.
- 3:50People are into it.
- 3:51I don't know.
- 3:53Hot take.
- 3:54It's dumb.
- 3:55Speaking of dumb, let's talk about the new door handles on the Tesla.
- 3:59Oh, that's not gonna break.
- 4:01The video, you kind of get a sneak peek here of the new Tesla Roadster.
- 4:05We heard about this on the drag racing episode with Bobby parks.
- 4:08He's really excited about wheels.
- 4:11I love like, I love that the Tesla Roadster is a coupe.
- 4:16You're right on all counts.
- 4:18But this new door handle, you know, the current Teslas, the door
- 4:21handle kind of pops out at you.
- 4:23It's like electromechanical and then you grab it, you know, all this kind of thing.
- 4:26This new one is swipe.
- 4:28And the best part of it is you get the glimpse of the new quote
- 4:30unquote Roadster or coupe rather.
- 4:33And you get to see this guy trying a new door handle and
- 4:36he must swipe it like this.
- 4:37Four or five times and it doesn't react.
- 4:39And I'm like, what is that?
- 4:40This would be the most infuriating thing on the planet for me, if this
- 4:44is how I have to now open my door.
- 4:46Apparently he was swiping up and you should have swiped down.
- 4:49I mean, I thought it was left and right.
- 4:53That's different, but it could be linked together.
- 4:55Instead of swipe, they should call it foreplay.
- 4:57And he just didn't know how to, how to get the car to do what he wanted it to do.
- 5:02Oh my God.
- 5:04He should have swiped right.
- 5:05Oh man, I, you know, I get, I get that.
- 5:09That's where technology and innovation is taking us, but it's just like, the more
- 5:13things get so technically complex like that, it's like, There's simplicity in
- 5:19simple things that will always work, like a door handle, like a button on a, on a
- 5:25phone or, or, or on something, not some touch tone thing that then the screen
- 5:29breaks and then you can't turn your AC on or off or something in your, your
- 5:33car, all these infotainment systems, you know, a dial, a button it's mechanical.
- 5:37Yeah, you can break it off if you're an idiot, but for the most
- 5:40part, these things last decades.
- 5:43I feel a rant coming.
- 5:45I mean, if you've ever used one of those Samsung TVs, and I'm sure
- 5:49there's other brands that do this with the touch front where there's
- 5:52no buttons, I have one of these.
- 5:54I've had the luxury of owning it for many years.
- 5:56I refused to touch it anymore because it's infuriating to
- 6:00hit the volume 9, 000 times.
- 6:02Let me just go get the remote.
- 6:03So hopefully my key fob for Tesla will allow me to open the door
- 6:07without touching the stupid thing, because if it's anything like the
- 6:09Samsung TVs, it'll drive you nuts.
- 6:11That's all I'm saying.
- 6:12And then how about, how's it going to handle rain when it's pouring down rain
- 6:15and there's water flowing down the side or ice it ices on a winter morning and
- 6:20you're, you're chiseling the ice off of it or pour it, pouring warm water
- 6:24to melt it because I can't open my door because you're wearing a glove.
- 6:27So I can't sense that you're opening the door.
- 6:29Okay.
- 6:30You got to get the new, you got to get those new gloves with the touchpads
- 6:34that you can use on your touchscreens or you just don't buy it as well.
- 6:37How does that work when it's wet, but I'll just leave that there.
- 6:39Let's just leave that.
- 6:40I don't know.
- 6:41I mean, I guess I, you know, maybe you, I mean, why don't you
- 6:45just make an app on your phone?
- 6:46Click the button and it opens.
- 6:49Swipe your phone.
- 6:50How do you get in when your phone's dead?
- 6:52You say open butthole and then a charging wire comes out and you
- 6:56can plug your phone in enough juice to recharge open my butthole.
- 7:02No, my butthole.
- 7:04No, no, no, no.
- 7:05My butthole.
- 7:06Can you imagine?
- 7:07You're standing at the charging station?
- 7:12Somebody doesn't know what's going on.
- 7:15I'm thinking about the scenario where you go golfing with your boss and then
- 7:19you're going back to the cars after you're, you're, you're around 18.
- 7:23And then you walk up to your car nonchalantly with your boss parked right
- 7:27next to, and his, uh, S 600 Mercedes, because that's what he's going to drive.
- 7:32And you just walk up and say, casually, Tesla, open butthole.
- 7:36What is your boss going to think?
- 7:39He's going to say, do you have any gray?
- 7:41He's going to say, he's going to say, uh, okay, you're going to,
- 7:47this is your last day, goodbye.
- 7:50You know, chances are he's a 12 year old boy on the inside too.
- 7:56So he'd probably like it.
- 7:58I don't know.
- 8:00Meanwhile on planet Tesla.
- 8:02In other Tesla news, very unfortunate.
- 8:04There was a recent accident.
- 8:07Not too far from my personal stomping grounds where a Tesla crashed into some
- 8:13trees that crash caused explosion, fire, et cetera, the car engulfed in flames.
- 8:21Varying reports.
- 8:23Saying the fire burned for four hours before it was put out versus I don't
- 8:28know, it was put out immediately and the fire department just there for
- 8:31four hours quenching re ignition of the batteries, blah, blah, blah, regardless
- 8:36of whether it was minutes or four hours.
- 8:39That thing definitely burned long enough that there was nothing practically left.
- 8:44There was no interior.
- 8:45There was no roof.
- 8:46There was no hood.
- 8:48There were no body panels.
- 8:49I mean, granted they might've ripped the doors off and everything and
- 8:51pushed them aside and weren't seen in the picture, but it was charred.
- 8:56The mystery of this right now, this happened in a neighborhood, this
- 9:00happened on a neighborhood street, leaving essentially a dead end, a cul
- 9:05de sac, an S shaped street, not even probably too long, as it was negotiating
- 9:11the first of the curve, the car lost control, ended up in this patch of trees,
- 9:16directly in front of people's houses.
- 9:18So obviously people heard the commotion or whatnot and called the
- 9:21fire department and called the police.
- 9:23The mystery of this is There were two people involved in this.
- 9:27Obviously, unfortunately they did not survive.
- 9:31There was a passenger in the front passenger seat, and there
- 9:34was a person in the back seat.
- 9:36The authorities are very adamant in saying that there
- 9:39was nobody in the driver's seat.
- 9:42So does that mean that this Tesla was put on autopilot somehow?
- 9:49I don't know how, cause I don't know enough about their autopilot system and
- 9:52engaging it somehow got up to a quote.
- 9:56High speed.
- 9:57Okay.
- 9:58And it must've been a high enough speed to careen off the road and then
- 10:01explode into trees because I would hope that the neighborhood speed of 20
- 10:05miles an hour, if you hit a tree, you wouldn't burst into flames because every
- 10:10fricking accident would be Chernobyl.
- 10:13How did that happen?
- 10:14You know, the initial report, you know, the authorities contacting Tesla, et
- 10:18cetera, Elon is being very, very careful.
- 10:21You know, he's saying that, no, the data that we pulled that autopilot was not
- 10:25engaged, this, that, and the other, I mean, you know, how can that be possible?
- 10:29If there was no, but no, no body found in the driver's seats,
- 10:33you know, how did this happen?
- 10:34And these weren't 20 something year old folks.
- 10:36These were.
- 10:37Older gentlemen, 59, 69, you know, so, you know, if they were 20 year
- 10:42olds, you could, you could argue, Oh yeah, he was in the driver's seat.
- 10:45He's showing off.
- 10:46He jumped into the back seat.
- 10:47Oh, look, my car drives itself.
- 10:49I have a hard time believing, you know, a 59 or 69 year old's
- 10:52going to pull that stunt, I could believe that there are people.
- 10:56Unfortunately, silly enough to be like, Oh, look at my car.
- 10:58It can drive itself.
- 10:59I'm not going to sit in the driver's seat.
- 11:01I don't know why you do that, because you could still prove my car drives
- 11:04itself and sit in the freaking driver's seat like a sane, rational
- 11:08person in case something goes wrong.
- 11:10I don't know.
- 11:10Maybe.
- 11:11There was someone in the driver's seat.
- 11:13Maybe they left the driver's seat after the accident, somehow trying to get
- 11:17out from the back of the car for some reason with the fire and all that.
- 11:21I mean, I don't know.
- 11:23It's very strange.
- 11:25It'll be interesting to see when the, the official black box and all that
- 11:28stuff, you know, other third parties get to see the data to confirm or, or not
- 11:34confirm whether autopilot was on or not.
- 11:36I mean, this is a very bizarre, tragic accident that didn't need to happen.
- 11:40Nobody's going to comment on this story.
- 11:42No, nothing to say.
- 11:45I mean, I don't, I don't, I, there's not much more to say on this.
- 11:48I'm sure more things will develop out of it.
- 11:50It's, it's very bizarre, very unfortunate in advertising in such a way that makes
- 11:55it sound like it's fully autonomous.
- 11:57And it, again, people, there is no such thing right now as a fully
- 12:01autonomous personal vehicle out there.
- 12:05Okay.
- 12:05None of the manufacturers have them.
- 12:07They, they are driver assist.
- 12:09And it's not just Tesla, Cadillac, and Volvo.
- 12:12I mean, all these companies are using this, not deceiving marketing, but uh, I
- 12:17think, you know what I'm trying to say.
- 12:19Well, they, they're all, they all misleading marketing.
- 12:21They all claim that they have, you know, the driver assist and all that.
- 12:24But I, I really think Tesla is.
- 12:25been the most negligent in the way that they advertise it, where they
- 12:29very much have always made it sound like it's this fully autonomous thing.
- 12:34No, it's not guys.
- 12:36The other, the other people, and maybe it's their learnings from Tesla,
- 12:40I don't think quite go that far.
- 12:42They make it a little bit more clear that it's.
- 12:45You know, level whatever, and it's just driver's aids and,
- 12:48and that's what they are.
- 12:49You're still supposed to be in control of the vehicle.
- 12:51You're not supposed to be reclined back and sleeping.
- 12:54You should still be paying attention at any rate.
- 12:57Please do not just blindly let your car that doesn't know what
- 13:00it's doing drive down the road because these people unfortunately,
- 13:05you know, lost their own lives.
- 13:06But.
- 13:06This was a neighborhood.
- 13:08Granted, it was, I think, pretty late at night, but what if it wasn't and
- 13:11there were children out or, you know, a family coming home in their minivan and,
- 13:16you know, you crash into somebody else?
- 13:17Like, don't do stupid stuff, people.
- 13:19Public service announcement.
- 13:21We've mentioned this before.
- 13:23Tesla profitability is all very confusing.
- 13:27Isn't it though?
- 13:28Because they're quote unquote, we sell so many cars, blah, blah,
- 13:31blah, ooh, our profits are so great.
- 13:33But without personally going through their financial sheet, not the first
- 13:38time, you know, allegedly, you know, most of their profits come from the
- 13:42carbon credit selling that they do and not from the actual car sales.
- 13:45And so they've been selling credits, carbon credits to some of the
- 13:50major manufacturers Stellantis.
- 13:56So, and you know, and others, and not surprisingly as Stellantis or, you know,
- 14:02Ford or GM or Volkswagen, all these people start generating their own EVs.
- 14:06They're going to be getting their own credits and they're going to
- 14:09no longer need to buy off of Tesla.
- 14:12And Stellantis has already said that they're going to save themselves some do
- 14:16re mi and pull out of whatever purchasing agreements they have, which we won't.
- 14:21Cost, I think somewhere near to the tune of 240 million
- 14:25to Tesla that they will lose.
- 14:27So considering apparently first quarter 2021 was something like
- 14:32533 million pre tax income, now they're going to lose 240 million.
- 14:36That's a pretty significant chunk of profit sheet.
- 14:40Now, if you've been continuing to follow our sub thread of Unsolved mysteries
- 14:45with respect to Stellantis, which Brad usually prefaces by saying, how the hell
- 14:50can they still maintain 700 horsepower V8s on 400 year old Mercedes chassis?
- 14:54No, no, no, no, no.
- 14:55My, I usually say, thank God they can still produce 700
- 14:59horsepower V8 monster motors.
- 15:01But this is the reason why they can remember we said they walk
- 15:04in the door and they go, I don't give a shit about anything.
- 15:07They're buying these credits from Tesla so they can continue to
- 15:10produce things like the Hellcat.
- 15:12I mean, it all makes sense now.
- 15:13So if what Tanya is saying is true and Chrysler is going back on that
- 15:18or Stellantis rather, that means that might be the death knell for cars.
- 15:23Like the track Hawk, the Hellcats, the, you know, the demon, all that kind of
- 15:28stuff, whatever's got that engine, that hand me 700 horsepower hand me in it.
- 15:32Why couldn't they use those credits for their diesels?
- 15:39That's a, that's a sore, sore subject.
- 15:48But as we said, months and months ago, as the majors were waiting.
- 15:53To see what happened and begin to tool up and develop their EVs.
- 15:58They're going to take their pot shots at Tesla.
- 16:01So what's coming next on you?
- 16:02This question was asked last month because it was like, Hey, what is Mercedes doing?
- 16:07I haven't heard anything yet.
- 16:09Well, funny that was asked because they're coming out in 2022 with their
- 16:15Mercedes Benz EQS, which is going to be their all electric entry into this realm.
- 16:24Brad, you look puzzled.
- 16:25Do you mean the Mercedes Volt?
- 16:27Because that's exactly what it looks like.
- 16:30Mercedes Chevrolet Volt.
- 16:33I'll give you that.
- 16:33It does look like a Volt.
- 16:35It is being labeled a Tesla fighter.
- 16:37I don't know.
- 16:38I will say when I was like, Oh yes, Mercedes.
- 16:41Oh, and then when I saw it, I was like, Oh no, Mercedes, what have you done?
- 16:47No, couldn't you?
- 16:48Oh, really?
- 16:50Maybe it'll look better in person.
- 16:51No, no, it won't.
- 16:53It looks like, you know what it looks like if you've ever been to a sporting
- 16:56event and they've got those, uh, the inflatable flying around drone vehicles.
- 17:02That's exactly what it looks like.
- 17:03I expect to see this floating around a Capitals game at the arena someday.
- 17:07No, I just want them to get rid of the EQS, or whatever they're
- 17:11calling it, and put a BLA, so we can just go, What do you drive?
- 17:14I drive a Blah.
- 17:16Unfortunately, from its profile, it has some very Oh,
- 17:21Tesla reminiscent lines to it.
- 17:23And it's like, come on Mercedes.
- 17:25Yeah, no.
- 17:26And then from the back, I don't know in the back if the, if the Mercedes emblem
- 17:30wasn't on there, I think it was Buick, but not even like the Buick of today,
- 17:33which is actually like, that's a Buick.
- 17:36That's your grandfather's grandfather's Buick.
- 17:38But this is like 10 years ago.
- 17:41Don't forget, we still got like the Lucid Air and like all these other
- 17:44cars that are back there that are that are chomping at Tesla's bit,
- 17:47you know, trying to get in there.
- 17:49And so I don't know, Mercedes, come on.
- 17:52We just talked about the Brits just take a GLA or C Class and
- 17:57dump an EV in it and go boom.
- 17:59And everybody goes, Ah, it's amazing.
- 18:01It's kind of like the e tron idea, right?
- 18:02It's like, right.
- 18:03Revolutionize on the design you already have and then retrofit
- 18:06the EV power plant into it.
- 18:07Everybody expects a certain level of design, quality and style from Mercedes.
- 18:12But this thing I'm with you, Brad.
- 18:14It looks like something from GM 15 years ago.
- 18:16I saw basically when it comes to Tesla competition.
- 18:20I say Audi and Porsche winning.
- 18:22They've got the best looking Tesla fighters.
- 18:25Especially the Tay.
- 18:26I gotta, I gotta tip my hat to the Taycan.
- 18:29It's way better than the Panamera.
- 18:32From every angle, it's not bad.
- 18:33You're kind of like, Hey, we got the four door 911 finally right
- 18:37after 35 years of trying it.
- 18:39It doesn't look bad.
- 18:40It's got good numbers and Porsche.
- 18:42It's going to take them a minute.
- 18:44Maybe they're not necessarily concerned with 600 miles of range or
- 18:47whatever, but they're going to build.
- 18:50So I stopped listening to you for half a second.
- 18:52Cause you said GLA, then something else.
- 18:54And if they're going to go retro, could we like a 300 SL going or even
- 18:59in like an AMG going all electric?
- 19:02Like, please, please.
- 19:03Are you listening?
- 19:03That sounds like a prime candidate for the electrogenic motor swap.
- 19:08I give you that too.
- 19:09It'll be unaffordable, but I would love to see it.
- 19:12Oh, no.
- 19:13Absolutely.
- 19:13I'd like to see that in more cars, that's for sure.
- 19:16Without further ado, the uh, Plaid edition of the Model S
- 19:21is finally slated to arrive.
- 19:24It is happening, and it is going to be the, quote, fastest production car ever.
- 19:30Ever according to Mr.
- 19:32Musk, until the Roadster hits the street, until something else.
- 19:36Yeah.
- 19:36I don't know.
- 19:37Until the lucid air, uh, the labor case I say in, I mean, come on, this is, well
- 19:43this is the one that, you know, alleged, the thousand horsepower, blah, blah, blah,
- 19:47which I think the lucid air alleges 1100.
- 19:50So the Lucid Air is supposed to debut, I think, this year.
- 19:53So if it does come out, maybe.
- 19:55That will be the fastest production car ever.
- 19:57Now there was a plaid plus edition, which was the one I think that got you that
- 20:03extra a hundred horsepower, but that has apparently been canceled because
- 20:07the regular plaid is just so awesome as it is, there is apparently no need for
- 20:13the plus edition, according to Musk.
- 20:15So they've canned that.
- 20:16Okay.
- 20:16Maybe somebody can answer this.
- 20:18If you're listening, you know, comment, write us, call us, text us, whatever.
- 20:22When I hear the word plaid.
- 20:24Two things come to mind, Braveheart and boring, right?
- 20:27And not because Braveheart is boring, but plaid is boring to look at.
- 20:31So what is the deal with this plaid name?
- 20:33Like, what is the significance of this?
- 20:35Maybe, maybe Edson can tell us.
- 20:37He has told me, and my understanding is, I think it's a space balls reference.
- 20:41Like they go beyond light speed and they go plaid.
- 20:44I think something along those lines.
- 20:46So it's some kind of.
- 20:47In the know, kind of, which is why there's ludicrous mode and all that other stuff.
- 20:51I might be wrong.
- 20:53It's something like that though, but I can tell you the, so we do mountain runs.
- 20:57Uh, Edson has a model three and then we have another friend that has a
- 21:01model S, uh, the performance or.
- 21:03Perfer Monte or whatever they call it.
- 21:05And that car is no joke.
- 21:07I mean, that one is it's a couple of years old now, but it's zero to 60 and
- 21:10two, two, and it is just crazy, but I feel like they probably discontinued
- 21:15the plaid plus because of what we were talking about earlier with the roadster
- 21:18that's going to do zero to 60 and sub 1.
- 21:201, although I know they wouldn't get a full second out of it.
- 21:23You know, at some point you start eating into your own market share there.
- 21:26I think there's the roadster that does it sub 1.
- 21:291 with the cannons.
- 21:30And then otherwise it's like 1.
- 21:328 or something.
- 21:33So.
- 21:34I mean, you know, Tesla's lovely.
- 21:37They've done a lot to disrupt the car culture and technology and all that.
- 21:43And that's wonderful.
- 21:44And that's great.
- 21:45But for 114, 000, I still want something else.
- 21:49I don't care if it has a thousand horsepower and does 2.
- 21:512 seconds, zero to 60.
- 21:53Like, I want to, you know, it has a thousand horsepower.
- 21:55It costs, you know, it has a thousand horsepower.
- 21:57It costs half as much.
- 21:58Challenge your Hellcat.
- 21:59Just going to put it out there.
- 22:01Well, that's a good argument though.
- 22:02I mean, and the argument both ways is, well, you know, and I'll keep
- 22:05using the Roadster as an example.
- 22:06The Roadster is going to be two 50 and it's going to smoke any car.
- 22:10There is Bugatti, all of those buying these.
- 22:14Here's my problem with it though.
- 22:15All of these cars are not particularly attractive.
- 22:17I think they're pretty vanilla.
- 22:19So you pull up in a road, sort of LA and they park you in the back
- 22:22because they don't know any better.
- 22:23Right?
- 22:23So you pull up in your, your hurricane or your guy or your,
- 22:27even, you know, older stuff.
- 22:28And they're going to go, Oh, wow.
- 22:30That's special.
- 22:30You know, even a three 60 Ferrari, which you can get for a quarter
- 22:33of this for half this price.
- 22:35You're going to be up front.
- 22:36That plaid is going to be in the back somewhere collecting dust.
- 22:38I mean, honestly, they're vanilla on the outside, the vanilla on
- 22:41the inside and they're vanilla.
- 22:43On my butt in the seat, because I've driven a model three before, and I
- 22:47felt like I was driving a Nissan Ultima that I got out of the Hertz rental lot.
- 22:53I mean, other than the fact that if you stop on it, yeah, you get thrown back in
- 22:57the seat because there's so much torque.
- 22:59Yeah.
- 22:59The acceleration is ridiculous in an EV, but I don't know.
- 23:02Maybe I need to drive a different one.
- 23:04But I say you're just cruising around town.
- 23:06It was no different than anything else.
- 23:08It felt like a rental car.
- 23:09I wasn't blown away.
- 23:10I didn't feel like I was in this luxury for spending tens of thousands of dollars.
- 23:15And I'm with Tanya where the Tesla doesn't give me anything back.
- 23:18It hasn't convinced me yet that I can get rid of a GTI and have more fun.
- 23:23It's the fun factor for at least for me.
- 23:25There's that straight line performance, but there's not that overall performance
- 23:28that I think, you know, like you said, it was visceral, you know, Tanya.
- 23:31And it's, to me, that's what I keep going back to is, yeah, it's fast in
- 23:35a straight line and yeah, it's faster than my car, but, uh, you know, I
- 23:38want to hear it, I want to hear that.
- 23:40I think I'd rather be in a, that Trans Am we talked about earlier, right?
- 23:44You feel like, well, I'm supposed to be going fast.
- 23:46It sounds like I'm going fast.
- 23:47I'm probably doing zero to 16, eight seconds, but man, it sounds good,
- 23:50you know, and it's smoking and I can smell it when eight seconds was fast.
- 23:54Like, wow, it does it in eight seconds.
- 23:55It's incredible.
- 23:57We can take the plaid to the next level with the, uh, Pikes Peak racer,
- 24:01because as we mentioned last year in the attempt at Pikes Peak, you know,
- 24:05we kind of joked about this, there were several episodes where we captured
- 24:07this and reported on it, Randy Pope's hooked up with unplugged performance,
- 24:12made several Pikes Peaks attempt.
- 24:14One time it went airborne.
- 24:15They did complete the run up to the sky and all that they are returning.
- 24:19With a modified Tesla plaid edition and are going to attempt the race to
- 24:25the sky yet again, taking to the plaid to the entire next level, probably
- 24:29into the stratosphere, because it's going to completely launch into orbit.
- 24:32Good on them.
- 24:32That's awesome.
- 24:33Curious to see how it turns out.
- 24:34I was gonna say, I'm pretty sure Randy is doing it again.
- 24:36I saw a video that he posted a day ago, so that'd be interesting to check out.
- 24:39And there's a really great show on Motor Trend about last year about
- 24:42them running and wrecking and things.
- 24:44So it's pretty cool.
- 24:45Boring company.
- 24:47Take that as you will.
- 24:49That's a real thing, right?
- 24:50That's, that's called the boring company, but it's like boring through something.
- 24:55This is the boring company that's making the underground hyperloop, if
- 24:59you remember tunnels in Las Vegas, where the Tesla's were going to ride
- 25:03on skates at high speed, a fully autonomous and zip you through,
- 25:08you know, these underground tubes.
- 25:10So you could move out Las Vegas without.
- 25:13Walking around in the hundred million degree heat and all the
- 25:16traffic and congestion and all that.
- 25:18So they finally, uh, completed a 1.
- 25:215 mile loop and it's not quite as promised.
- 25:26So yes, as most things, yes.
- 25:29There are these.
- 25:30Tunnels underground.
- 25:31Yes, a Tesla vehicle drives through them, but no, they're not on whatever
- 25:37these alleged skates were going to be.
- 25:40No, they're not self driving and no, they cannot go at high speed.
- 25:44So they are driven and it cannot exceed 35 miles an hour.
- 25:47And it's basically a car that drives through an underground tunnel.
- 25:50So what you're telling me is Tesla has an Uber service in Vegas right now, and
- 25:56it was replaced by the existing monorail.
- 25:59That already does everything you describe taking people from, you know,
- 26:02one place to the other doing a loop and they don't have to walk or be in,
- 26:06you know, the sun, you know, the way I read it and the way I looked at it,
- 26:09it's like the scariest small world ride.
- 26:11You could have ever presented to me being trapped in a Tesla with a
- 26:14Johnny cab going around in Las Vegas.
- 26:16So I'm kind of glad it's just an uber.
- 26:19I mean, it's not done yet.
- 26:20There's plans for the next segments to be added on.
- 26:24I don't recall all of that.
- 26:27Is super boring.
- 26:31If you're claustrophobic, I can't imagine this is fun, but
- 26:34here's my issue with it, right?
- 26:36So it's a mile and a half and it takes you from one side of traffic to the other.
- 26:41So it's not like it's avoiding all of the traffic.
- 26:43So basically you're just the asshole that cuts line.
- 26:46And a mile and a half to get up in the front, just like the guys that ride
- 26:49down the emergency lane and traffic, I don't understand the logic here, right?
- 26:52It's great.
- 26:53You can speed through the tunnel, but you're still going to stop at
- 26:56the end, which means you're just going to back up model threes all
- 26:58the way back through that tunnel.
- 26:59So, because we all know that Vegas is really Disney world for adults.
- 27:03I mean, so it's just another attraction ride amusement.
- 27:08To add to the amusement park, right?
- 27:10I mean, it's just whatever.
- 27:11It's, it's, it's a novelty.
- 27:13I mean, why not, if you have the technology to allegedly make the
- 27:17tunnel boring, way more cost effective than doing something above ground.
- 27:23See, and this is where the frustrating thing of all this is.
- 27:26It's like, if you have this technology, why don't you just Frickin build a subway.
- 27:30Why don't you build a train that can hold people on a rail that would be
- 27:35autonomous because a lot of the Metro rail systems actually drive themselves.
- 27:39Yes.
- 27:39There's a conductor in there to monitor, but for the most part, it's like a plane.
- 27:43You put them on autopilot and they go and use that technology to bring the
- 27:46cost down and actually move people.
- 27:49Not like this gimmick of throwing a roadster in space to be space
- 27:53junk, this gimmick to like, Oh, the Tesla drives in the tunnel.
- 27:57Like who gives a crap?
- 27:59How many people do you fit in?
- 28:01You know what you just described?
- 28:02You know what you just described?
- 28:03The monorail.
- 28:06It's autonomous.
- 28:06And guess what?
- 28:07It's an EV.
- 28:09It's already there because we're, we like recreating the wheel.
- 28:12Okay.
- 28:12That's what it is.
- 28:13That's where we're at right now.
- 28:15Well, and the thing is, if they've uncovered technology that makes it more
- 28:18cost effective to do it underground safely, and you don't have to do it
- 28:23above ground and be in the way of putting cranes, blocking traffic, disrupting
- 28:28everything, it's kind of out of sight.
- 28:31Like, okay, well, let's do it in a way that makes sense.
- 28:34Not in the way that's a gimmick.
- 28:36I'm getting the feeling through this entire episode that
- 28:38Tanya's not sold on Tesla.
- 28:40I could be wrong.
- 28:41Oh, I mean the entire series of the drive thru, I think at this point.
- 28:44I'm making enemies.
- 28:45I'm making enemies.
- 28:46I mean.
- 28:47As we switch gears, there is some good news in the electrified world.
- 28:52More progress being made in terms of electrifying America.
- 28:58So Electrify America has hit their 600 station mark in
- 29:02trying to electrify America.
- 29:03Electrify America.
- 29:04That's good.
- 29:05You know, we need that because that'll help people with range anxiety.
- 29:09And obviously even without that, we need charging stations.
- 29:13If electric vehicles are going to be more of a thing, people can't
- 29:15rely on being able to just go back and forth to their home all day.
- 29:18So this is good news.
- 29:19And there's more companies than just electrify America that are building
- 29:23charging stations and whatnot.
- 29:25And actually to follow up on this.
- 29:28I know I'm jumping ahead.
- 29:29I hate to be remiss, but Tesla actually announced that they're
- 29:35opening their charging networks or they're going to plan to open their
- 29:39charging networks to other EVs.
- 29:42That's if you have the adapter, right?
- 29:44Cause they have a proprietary Connector or whatever, that's
- 29:47how they're going to get you.
- 29:48You got to buy the adapter from Tesla to be compatible.
- 29:51Oh, the Apple model.
- 29:53A hundred percent.
- 29:53Exactly.
- 29:54That's all.
- 29:55That's all I knew it was coming.
- 29:56You know, it honestly, it doesn't specify, but that's a great point.
- 30:00That very well could be the case.
- 30:01Oh, order your Tesla adapter now for the low, low price of 10 million Bitcoin.
- 30:07And you too can charge on our ultra fast charging network.
- 30:10How many carbon credits?
- 30:12Do I get if I buy the Tesla adapter?
- 30:15They have a glut of those now, right?
- 30:17Cause everybody's giving them back.
- 30:18Moving on.
- 30:19We'd be remiss if we didn't move on.
- 30:21It's time to talk about Tesla.
- 30:23Oh God, here we go.
- 30:26So there's three points to hit here.
- 30:28And I think it ties back to some things we were already talking about
- 30:31earlier around supply chain issues.
- 30:33Microchip delays, things of that nature.
- 30:35So the Tesla semi truck, was it just me or did that thing
- 30:39drop off the face of the earth?
- 30:41Cause that, that thing was coming.
- 30:42Like I thought five years ago already, it was hot and heavy and
- 30:45orders were made and we were going to make so many of them in crickets.
- 30:49Which is, let me offend some people, kind of par for the Tesla course, right?
- 30:52Because every time, like, we're announcing something, it's always like six years
- 30:55later that it actually comes to fruition.
- 30:58Whatever.
- 30:59But, you know, that boy who cried wolf gets a little old after a while.
- 31:03So the Tesla's truck is once again delayed and it's very unclear as to
- 31:10what the delay is, but it sounds like it is essentially supply chain issues
- 31:15and refocusing kind of what we were talking about earlier with the Ford is
- 31:19they're refocusing their energy and The supplies that they do have, the semi and
- 31:23the Cybertruck as they both are delayed.
- 31:26They do kind of talk a little bit about, We believe we remain on track
- 31:29to build our first model Y vehicles in Berlin and Austin in 2021.
- 31:33Well, 2021 is almost over folks.
- 31:35The pace of the respective production ramps will be influenced by the
- 31:38successful introduction of many new product and manufacturing technologies.
- 31:41ongoing supply chain related challenges and regional permitting.
- 31:45To better focus on these factories and due to the limited availability of
- 31:49battery cells and global supply chain challenges, we have shifted the launch
- 31:53of the semi truck program to 2022.
- 31:56We are also making progress on the industrialization of Cybertruck,
- 32:00which is currently planned for Austin production subsequent to Model Y.
- 32:03I mean, it goes hand in hand.
- 32:05The Cybertruck is also delayed.
- 32:06The Cybertruck was supposed to come out this year.
- 32:08It's supposed to be in production.
- 32:09That's not happening.
- 32:11That one's vague too.
- 32:12I would assume the whole we're shipping the Model Y is part of it.
- 32:15There's also question as to, are they having problems with the design?
- 32:20Or, or could it be, they got to figure out how to resell those carbon credits that
- 32:28they sold everybody that got returned.
- 32:31Or B, is it because they're under investigation for Tesla's
- 32:34hitting emergency vehicles?
- 32:35Let's unpack that.
- 32:37Or before we unpack that, C, they're seeing how well the F 150 is already
- 32:42putting presales in and they're like, Hmm, maybe this triangle blob thing
- 32:47polygon from Nintendo 64 days isn't what people want as a pickup truck.
- 32:53That's specifically why I put 100 deposit.
- 32:55Can we get a doi from Brad?
- 32:59I mean, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
- 33:01So, I mean.
- 33:01Those people are all blind.
- 33:03You like the look of that thing, I guess, to each their own.
- 33:05I mean, I'm not a pickup truck fan, but give me the F 150 all day, every day.
- 33:11You can haul so much mulch.
- 33:13If you're telling me I have to have a pickup truck, I would like
- 33:16a traditional looking pickup truck.
- 33:17So give me the F 150, give me a Rivian, give me whatever,
- 33:20as long as it looks good.
- 33:22Square body Chevy.
- 33:23Dan will get you one tomorrow.
- 33:24It's hot.
- 33:27I do not want one.
- 33:28So they are also under investigation right now because of the number
- 33:34of times their Teslas have struck emergency vehicles while operating
- 33:39in the autonomous mode, which they're still claiming is fully autonomous.
- 33:44And then also Elon Musk recently tweeted in the last day or so how
- 33:48their autonomous beta testing version, whatever the heck they're on 9.
- 33:522 or something.
- 33:53Eh, might not be that great.
- 33:55He's like, literally said something to that effect.
- 33:57In my opinion, it's not so good.
- 33:59Oh, okay.
- 34:00Yes, that's what the rest of us know.
- 34:02Because A, it is not fully autonomous.
- 34:04There's no such thing yet.
- 34:06There's no vehicle that you can lay down in the back seat and get to
- 34:09where you're going without dying.
- 34:11Okay.
- 34:11I mean, you might get there once, but I wouldn't put my
- 34:14faith in that more than once.
- 34:16But it becomes a hearse at that point.
- 34:18You go straight to the funeral.
- 34:23Converse into a casket and you're done, I guess.
- 34:25It's not like there's been like hundreds and hundreds of these accidents,
- 34:28but I mean, there's been like almost like a dozen or so over the last five
- 34:32years, which is more than enough.
- 34:34to make people go why is it always happening when there's an emergency
- 34:37vehicle on the side of the road with their lights flashing, particularly
- 34:41in night or low light conditions?
- 34:43What is wrong with this technology that's not seeing
- 34:46what it should be seeing, right?
- 34:47And I mean, I think it's Tesla themselves need to investigate this.
- 34:51That's pretty serious.
- 34:52Often when there's an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, there is a
- 34:55human being on the side of the road outside of said emergency vehicle.
- 34:58Does seem to be a reoccurring theme, whether it's police
- 35:01cars, ambulances, et cetera.
- 35:03It's like the camera system on the Tesla target fixates on those flashing lights.
- 35:08It must freak out the camera in such a way that it causes The thing to
- 35:12become basically like a homing beacon or like a, like a targeted missile.
- 35:16I mean, it's just, it's nuts.
- 35:17Something's happening, blinding something there.
- 35:19I have read, he's very adamant in it.
- 35:22Tesla's are only going to be using the camera technology as opposed to other
- 35:25people's autonomous vehicles are a combination of the camera, radar, LIDAR,
- 35:29all these things, or so my understanding is the, he's kind of insistent that it's
- 35:33going to be a hundred percent of cameras.
- 35:35It's like, okay, maybe one day, but it doesn't seem like
- 35:37the camera technology is.
- 35:39Quite as good as the human eye that's paying attention, plenty of people
- 35:42at the hands of the wheel that have struck emergency vehicles also.
- 35:46So I still think the biological alternative, you know, the organics
- 35:50in your head are still far superior to any camera and any computer.
- 35:54And that's part of the debate too, is just a computer.
- 35:57They're not sophisticated enough to have that reason component and to
- 36:00understand and to get the other clues that can warn you about something.
- 36:05Not on a computer that small.
- 36:07I mean, yeah, sure.
- 36:07If you got big blue from IBM in the backseat.
- 36:10Yeah, of course.
- 36:11Yeah.
- 36:11I mean, if you've got three stories of massive mainframe computers, I'm sure
- 36:16it can be better than the human eye, but yeah, no, at any rate, we'd be remiss.
- 36:22If it wasn't a drive through episode where we didn't talk about Tesla,
- 36:27that was your best Siri voice yet.
- 36:28Yeah, that was pretty good.
- 36:31Thank you.
- 36:31I tried Tesla.
- 36:33So, uh, you know, it's, it's kind of a quiet month for Tesla in a way.
- 36:39I mean, the cyber truck still delayed.
- 36:42They're not doing this.
- 36:43They're not doing that little roadster.
- 36:45Who knows?
- 36:46It's still floating in space.
- 36:47Hashtag because chips.
- 36:49However.
- 36:50They're still dealing with a little teeny problem with their autopilot and
- 36:56the autopilot hitting parked emergency vehicles, particularly police cars.
- 37:02And yet again, another Tesla that is not fully self autonomous, even
- 37:08though they think it is sideswiped the police car, nearly hit the police
- 37:12officer who I think at the time happened to be getting out of the car.
- 37:15So thankfully he wasn't killed or severely injured.
- 37:19But it's just adding to the list for the NHTSA to investigate what
- 37:25the heck is going on where the cars are seemingly getting very confused
- 37:29with the combination of it's always happening in like low light settings.
- 37:32So this was like early morning.
- 37:34So it was still dark outside and it's seemingly like.
- 37:38Darkness plus the flashing of the emergency vehicle lights is just, it's
- 37:42like a fly to the electric bug zapper.
- 37:49And they're just, they're just going, they're just going and,
- 37:52you know, again, the morons.
- 37:54Offense or no offense.
- 37:55I don't care because you're not paying attention.
- 37:58What are you doing that you're letting your car sideswipe a parked vehicle?
- 38:03I'm just going to leave it there.
- 38:04I can't believe I'm falling in the role of Tesla apologist.
- 38:07I'm definitely not one, but it doesn't make national news when
- 38:10anybody else sideswipes a cop that's pulled over on the side of the road.
- 38:14And usually they don't pull over very far.
- 38:16Sometimes they do that defensively to try and protect the car in front of them.
- 38:19They Hang their ass out over the line or whatever to right.
- 38:23And in a lot of states, it's illegal for you to stay in the lane adjacent
- 38:28to the pulled over emergency vehicle.
- 38:30And if you cannot exit that lane, you have to reduce your speed
- 38:33by like 50 percent or something.
- 38:35They do definitely need to program something into their autonomy that would
- 38:39move the car in the opposite direction.
- 38:41Not towards the, it would just sideswipe the car in the lane next to him.
- 38:45So what the fair enough, but it doesn't make national news when
- 38:48a Ford escape does it, right?
- 38:50I think the problem is it's not, it's not so much Tesla.
- 38:53It's so much that it's always the car is in self driving mode.
- 38:58That's always the common denominator.
- 39:00Yeah.
- 39:00Because if it was just like, Oh, dumb ass, Tesla driver was driving and
- 39:06texting and they sideswiped a car.
- 39:08Yes.
- 39:08That's no different than Ford Explorer driver.
- 39:11Dumbass was texting lights, white car car.
- 39:14You know, when you're somebody like Tesla, that's claiming how awesome
- 39:19their self driving capabilities are and they're fully autonomous,
- 39:22you're putting a target on your back.
- 39:24And you're making it such that you're going to be the attention of every little
- 39:28thing that happens because you're claiming you're something that you really aren't.
- 39:32See Mark, this is the lesson we all learn about the drive through.
- 39:34Remember I mentioned in our, in our pre session, we just
- 39:37don't go there with the Tesla.
- 39:38You let Tanya do her thing.
- 39:41You let her rant, let her get it out of her system.
- 39:45It's like, I haven't heard the actual empirical argument.
- 39:48Yeah, it's pretty simple.
- 39:50Insurance companies ensure all these different cars.
- 39:52How many payouts do they make relative to mile driven on these cars?
- 39:56Autonomous driving, no autonomous driving.
- 39:58Is it doing better or worse than other expensive sedan?
- 40:03I haven't seen anybody release that data set.
- 40:05I don't know that.
- 40:06I mean, obviously they have the data.
- 40:07They absolutely have the data.
- 40:09You know, I haven't seen any, any news around that.
- 40:11I mean, certainly what do they call it?
- 40:13Autonomous level three or whatever.
- 40:15It's, it's a very dangerous point where it's, it's hard for humans.
- 40:19It's hard to have the discipline to pay attention.
- 40:21It really is.
- 40:22So you either turn it off.
- 40:24So you have to pay attention all the time.
- 40:25Or you try to have the discipline to pay attention the entire time while
- 40:28you're also kind of screwing around, because what else are you going to do?
- 40:31I was going to say it's called driving, but I mean, I'm not going to open that.
- 40:35Yeah.
- 40:36I mean, I don't disagree with you that we don't have the numbers and there's a
- 40:39lot of unsubstantiated claims that just say that there's far less accidents with.
- 40:44You know, the self driving the set and the other and all these nannies and aides
- 40:47that lane assist and all that stuff.
- 40:49And, and then that might be very true because I do think there is a subset
- 40:52of the population that is incapable of clearly keeping their focus on a single
- 40:56task at hand, which would be driving.
- 40:59And some of these aides are beneficial to the people around
- 41:02them to keep them safe, but.
- 41:05I just get very annoyed by, I love the way you worded that, right?
- 41:10That was awesome.
- 41:12Are you a lawyer?
- 41:13I have no idea what you want in real life.
- 41:14That was very, that was very specific wording.
- 41:18I just get irritated by the ignorance or arrogance of people, the self driving,
- 41:23like stop calling it fully autonomous.
- 41:25It's not, we're not there yet.
- 41:27It does not exist.
- 41:28It's full autonomous.
- 41:28It's called a monorail.
- 41:30It's something like a rollercoaster where the thing is tied to a track.
- 41:33That is full autonomous, but we're not yet at a point where we can just take
- 41:38a nap in the driver's seat, roll the seat back, put on Netflix and chill, and
- 41:43not kill somebody going down the road.
- 41:45It's 2 o'clock in the morning and you're on a country road and
- 41:47you want to go risk your life?
- 41:49And drive off a cliff or into a tree, by all means, live your
- 41:51best life for as long as you can.
- 41:54I don't know, don't put other people's lives unnecessarily in danger.
- 41:57And, and maybe one day we'll get there, but we're not.
- 42:00And yeah, you know, it's only like 11 accidents in the grand scheme, sure.
- 42:07But it's a black eye in the whole autonomous vehicle thing.
- 42:10And I hate the way that they face the market with it, where it's like, if
- 42:14they were just going to the market where they're like, yeah, accidents are
- 42:17happening and they do happen, they will happen and pay attention, assholes.
- 42:21Uh, use the future responsibly, but instead they react so defensively
- 42:26and so aggressively against whoever bat, you know, whoever raises
- 42:31concerns like, Hey, there appears to be a pattern to these accidents.
- 42:35If they were more just transparent about the challenges with the current software,
- 42:40I think they would get a lot further.
- 42:41I want to say this and I don't want to belabor the point, but the one
- 42:44thing that I take from all this is I approach it the opposite way.
- 42:48You know, I was jokingly saying, hang up and drive.
- 42:50You talked about, you know, being respectful of the future and the
- 42:52technology and stuff like that.
- 42:53When I look at driving, I think about the era in which we came up as drivers.
- 42:57Again, petrol heads of a certain age, we were the last of the analog generation.
- 43:01So we didn't have a lot of tech, but we were early adopters of technology.
- 43:05But I see driving still as a freedom, as a privilege, things like that.
- 43:10And I don't want to get into that debate, but what I also see it as is
- 43:13that moment, those 20 minutes, those 40 minutes, whatever it might be, where
- 43:18I get to disconnect from the grid.
- 43:20I don't have to think about work.
- 43:21I don't want to answer emails.
- 43:23I don't want to see your text message.
- 43:25I just want to turn on the radio, you know, my mixtape cruising in my five.
- 43:29Oh, with my carburetor and my hand crank and get where I'm going and
- 43:33just have a moment of decompression.
- 43:35And driving gives you that opportunity.
- 43:37So think about it that way, disconnect for just a moment, even if it's to go to
- 43:42the local target or drop your kid off at school, put the phone down and just focus
- 43:46on driving and actually driving becomes very much second nature and you do relax.
- 43:51It's, it's not a high stress thing.
- 43:53As long as you're situationally aware, we talk about that a lot.
- 43:57In racing, keeping your eyes up and just being aware of what's going on.
- 44:00But you do kind of let the rest of the world fade to gray.
- 44:04And it's a moment of clarity that I don't think we can get or harvest
- 44:08in a lot of other ways these days.
- 44:10Unfortunately, we could tangent on that train of thought for a long time.
- 44:13Cause I flat out, there's people that have said they just hate to drive.
- 44:16So for a person that just.
- 44:18Does not want to drive or be positive with it.
- 44:20Then get an Uber, right?
- 44:21You're not, you're not going to, you're not going to sell them on it.
- 44:23It's their moment to disconnect because they don't want to disconnect.
- 44:25They don't even want to be behind the wheel.
- 44:27Like if they could have somebody else driving them, they would.
- 44:29Right.
- 44:30So that's for those people.
- 44:31Yeah.
- 44:32Self driving when it actually happens will be wonderful.
- 44:34So let's, uh, let's switch gears.
- 44:36We've hit on this already a couple times, electric cars and police
- 44:39cars in apparently West Virginia.
- 44:42The city of Nitro, West Virginia.
- 44:45I didn't know such a city existed.
- 44:47What a fancy name, which is near Charleston for those
- 44:50who are geographically not challenged for West Virginia.
- 44:54Has bought a Tesla Model 3.
- 44:56To be used as a police cruiser.
- 44:59Hold on.
- 45:00I got questions.
- 45:02And they spent an additional 10, 000 on top of the 40, 000 to buy it, to outfit
- 45:07it with the light sirens and additional police equipment, the sport model.
- 45:12Then none of that is important based on the previous topic.
- 45:16We were just talking about, we have a Tesla.
- 45:19That's a police car with lights and sirens.
- 45:22And we're going to use it on patrol day, night, weather, withstanding,
- 45:26does it just like implode?
- 45:31The second autopilot's engaged, it actually enclapses in on
- 45:35itself in, in like a black hole and it just, it disappears.
- 45:40And the police officer becomes like quantum leap.
- 45:44It's all downhill from there.
- 45:46He now goes backwards in time to right histories and wrongs.
- 45:49Oh, my goodness.
- 45:51I think that's all we need to say about that.
- 45:53I just let's follow this and see where it goes and how long this car actually lasts.
- 45:59I mean, my biggest question with all these electric police cars, and
- 46:02I believe we're going to hit on.
- 46:04On this topic, actually later, what do you do in a high speed chase?
- 46:08Like if you're out running the cop, I mean, you probably could get
- 46:12away with it now because you only got to outlast the battery charge.
- 46:16And I tell you what, a Tesla full tilt, I've done this on track
- 46:20and I wrote an article about it.
- 46:21It doesn't last a half an hour at wide open.
- 46:24We'll call it wide open throttle.
- 46:25Well, then you got to consider the battery was probably not
- 46:28fully charged to begin with.
- 46:30Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
- 46:31I mean, you can't outrun Motorola.
- 46:33I'm not condoning any of this, but you can outrun those batteries.
- 46:37I'm not saying you should outrun the cost, but we know it happens.
- 46:40It'll be a Florida man story coming up.
- 46:42I mean, it's fine.
- 46:43It'll be West Virginia, man.
- 46:44The last bit of.
- 46:45Tesla news is interesting and not necessarily indicative
- 46:49of anything electric.
- 46:51co they issued an article that says Tesla obtains patent on its wild idea
- 46:56to use lasers as windshield wipers.
- 47:01And there's just.
- 47:02So much here.
- 47:03One could unpack.
- 47:05This is definitely Austin powers, like sharks with fricking lasers on their head.
- 47:10Exactly.
- 47:11And you need to put one of those sharks, like, uh, like it's a windshield wiper.
- 47:16It's all very confusing and the take that it could just be that they
- 47:20came up with this idea and they're patenting it because that's what you do.
- 47:23If you think you have an idea, put a patent on it.
- 47:25So nobody else.
- 47:26Can take it.
- 47:27And you might not yet know what you're actually going to use it
- 47:29for, but they framed it in this manner that really makes no sense.
- 47:33Talk about it specifically for debris on your windshield.
- 47:36So think dead bug, mud, bird doo doo, if you will.
- 47:41I see it all falling apart very quickly.
- 47:44So my windshield wipers are misaligned.
- 47:46So my car blinded me,
- 47:50then my windshield melted from the heat.
- 47:53And then the car got confused by the laser beam lights that were
- 47:57flashing at night during the rain.
- 47:59And then you crashed.
- 48:00Yes.
- 48:01It's obvious and very apparent that the patent and trade office
- 48:04is full of bad ideas, and this is just yet another one on that list.
- 48:09I would have thought they'd use it for heat and like some kind of anti fog.
- 48:13It's to give you like LASIK and cataracts.
- 48:18We're going to burn dirt off of your windshield.
- 48:23That just can't be efficient.
- 48:24That can't be energy efficient.
- 48:25It can't be efficient.
- 48:27And it sounds like they would not have a traditional windshield wiper
- 48:31blade going across the windshield.
- 48:32It almost reads that way, but that would be impossible because what do
- 48:36you do during a torrential downpour?
- 48:38There's no, there's no amount of lasers that are going to clear the water.
- 48:46And to do it, the laser would be so powerful that yes,
- 48:49it would burn your retina.
- 48:50It looks like a freaking like Calvin Harris midnight rave.
- 48:54It's like, Lights everywhere, laser beams, and shit.
- 48:57You might as well get out the glow sticks at that point.
- 48:59I mean, it's gonna, it's gonna be a travesty.
- 49:01Though it does beg the memory, the Cybertruck does not have
- 49:05windshield wipers, I believe.
- 49:06No, it has that, it has that Etch a Sketch thing, where it moves, does some
- 49:10crazy thing on the, on the windshield.
- 49:12Absolutely mental.
- 49:13And the Cybertruck was delayed.
- 49:15Maybe it was delayed for laser beams.
- 49:17Chips.
- 49:18Because laser beams.
- 49:19The Model X was the Falcon doors, and the Cybertruck will be the Stupid windshield.
- 49:25I guess we got to move on since we're already talking, you know,
- 49:27we're talking about these new EVs.
- 49:29I mean, nothing bad this month.
- 49:31We already knew that Elon moved to Austin, um, personally or a year or
- 49:36so ago, I guess now, and he lives in one of these solar Einhoven things.
- 49:42No, there's too many round edges on, on the, uh, The glass won't
- 49:48break if you throw something at it.
- 49:49Yeah.
- 49:50There's not, they didn't put the laser beams on the windshield.
- 49:52So to wipe the water away.
- 49:54Yeah.
- 49:55So he personally moved to Texas to be closer to SpaceX and all this other stuff.
- 50:00I'm sure he had issued, you know, other issues being angry at California.
- 50:04It's been recently announced that he is going to move the headquarters.
- 50:08Out of Palo Alto to Austin.
- 50:11Nice.
- 50:11It was every other Californian.
- 50:14Along with every other big California company.
- 50:16And part of it is citing the fact that California is just ridiculous in
- 50:21different ways in terms of just congestion and cost of living, you know, aside
- 50:26from the very stringent regulations.
- 50:29that they have in place and whatnot.
- 50:30So, uh, it'll be interesting to see how happy those California
- 50:34workers will be to move to Texas.
- 50:35They don't plan on shutting down the facilities they have in California.
- 50:39If anything, they're, you know, alleging to ramp up production in the,
- 50:42in the manufacturing plants there.
- 50:44So what I am hopeful here.
- 50:46On this one is Tesla moves to Austin, Steve Wynn owns DeLorean, which is
- 50:52also in Humboldt, Texas, not too far.
- 50:55They get together and we get an EV DeLorean.
- 50:58This is what I'm waiting for, people.
- 50:59The way it should have always been.
- 51:00A hundred thousand percent.
- 51:02But in other Tesla news, there's another drag race.
- 51:05And it's this 14 minute video that you got to fast forward to the nine minute mark.
- 51:10And then again, to like the, I don't know which minute mark to see
- 51:14anything remotely interesting, but it's between a thousand horsepower
- 51:17McLaren, whatever the hell it is.
- 51:19And a Tesla plaid S version blue.
- 51:22They did three runs.
- 51:23They did a standstill drag race run, which the Tesla obliterated the
- 51:28McLaren, which often no one's surprised.
- 51:31I mean, I, and it was to no one's surprise that was.
- 51:34Present for this drag racing.
- 51:36I mean, off the line, electrics have the advantage.
- 51:39We already know this.
- 51:40Then they did a rolling start drag due to the fact that of course, McLaren's
- 51:45going to suck off a dead stop line and the Tesla still really obliterated it.
- 51:51And then their third one was a rolling start with advantage to the McLaren.
- 51:57So I think it started with however many feet ahead of the Tesla and
- 52:01the Tesla still caught up basically.
- 52:03And I think it was.
- 52:04Ended up being like a nose to nose kind of finish.
- 52:08Hey, I got to add to the funny part of the end of this.
- 52:10Not only did the Tesla outrun the McLaren, it also apparently has better brakes.
- 52:15Yes, because the guy in the McLaren must've had a code brown moment.
- 52:19Cause essentially he ran out of racing.
- 52:21He ran out of runway or whatever they were drag racing on.
- 52:24He ran out of drag racing.
- 52:25And apparently literally managed to stop the McLaren an inch from hitting
- 52:32like a fence or a wall or something.
- 52:34The barrier at the end of the trash strip, you did some late breaking.
- 52:39I have to say, I mean, you know, we talked about Ken Block earlier.
- 52:42Obviously he's sold off Hoonigan.
- 52:44This is another Hoonigan video.
- 52:46He's kind of distanced himself from that, even though he's.
- 52:48Kind of still affiliated or whatever.
- 52:49It's still Hoonigan stuff.
- 52:51It's whatever you're right.
- 52:51The first like seven minutes is all about like cleaning products
- 52:54and, Oh, isn't my car cool?
- 52:56And all this kind of thing.
- 52:56It's, it's whatever.
- 52:57I looked at the clickbait, you know, McLaren versus plaid, and this is the
- 53:01same as the Corvette one they did, which the Corvette also got obliterated.
- 53:05It was some like 2000 horsepower, you know, nitrous injected quad
- 53:09turbo Corvette or whatever.
- 53:10And it was like, all right, yep.
- 53:11The Tesla wins every time.
- 53:13And it went great.
- 53:14Hey, look yet another story.
- 53:15Stupid drag race between a Tesla and something else
- 53:17that's going to get crushed.
- 53:18But you're right.
- 53:19That ending made the whole video worth it.
- 53:22So I just tell you guys to skip like the first 13 minutes and just watch
- 53:25that last poll because it's the best.
- 53:27After I lost interest after about five seconds, because like you
- 53:30said, there's a bajillion of these.
- 53:31I had an idea.
- 53:33That's not drag racing anymore, right?
- 53:34Nobody cares.
- 53:35I want to see a Triumph TR7 and a Fiat X19 drag race.
- 53:40Yes.
- 53:41Old school stuff.
- 53:41You think that video was long?
- 53:42It was long.
- 53:42It was long.
- 53:43Wait till they figure out how to keep those running long enough to get to
- 53:46the end of the that's the drag race I want to see what do they smell like
- 53:52like fire and oil and they're running rich that's for sure there's other
- 53:57Tesla news This month, which it's kind of funny, but also kind of scary.
- 54:01Uh, you know, honestly, this is more, I feel like sensational
- 54:05click baby than anything else.
- 54:07The way the headline reads Tesla tempted drivers with insane mode and
- 54:11now is tracking them to judge safety.
- 54:13Experts say it's ludicrous.
- 54:15Honestly, that title has nothing to do with the point
- 54:18that's trying to be made here.
- 54:20And so what's happening is Tesla's doing another beta test of their, you know,
- 54:25full autonomous driving bullshit that.
- 54:27Again, even Elon is admitting doesn't really work yet.
- 54:31Okay.
- 54:32It's not full self driving.
- 54:34They're doing like another beta rollout and they want to do actual
- 54:38testing with Tesla owners, as opposed to just dummy vehicles going around.
- 54:43And so he's created this vetting process where he's created this
- 54:47checklist, if you will, of, Grading scale for judging who will be allowed
- 54:52to beta test this new software update.
- 54:55So essentially he is tracking how people are driving.
- 54:58It's a very stringent grading scale to the extreme of any kind of like
- 55:03hard breaking, you get docked points.
- 55:05And so you have to get like a perfect hundred, hundred
- 55:07score or however your scale is.
- 55:10To be allowed to beta test a new full self driving software.
- 55:13And he's doing this because he only wants safe, trustworthy people to be trying this
- 55:18out, to be the Guinea pig, if you will.
- 55:20So it's not so much that he's trying to spy on everybody and,
- 55:23and, and track their every moves and control their driving habits.
- 55:26Not to say that things don't morph into other things, but it's supposed
- 55:29to be this vetting process for people to pilot the new beta software.
- 55:35And honestly, this isn't new.
- 55:37If people are going to get all in there, Oh my god, everybody's
- 55:39spying on me, meh, meh, meh.
- 55:42Guess what?
- 55:42Who was it?
- 55:43Progressive did this already?
- 55:44Like, Five, 10 years ago, where they gave you that little sensor to plug in
- 55:48OBD port and they were tracking how you drive and you were supposed to save on
- 55:52your car insurance and all this bullshit.
- 55:55So guess what people it's already been out there.
- 55:56I've been there, done that.
- 55:57Let's not go conspiracy theory.
- 55:59Ancient automotive enthusiasts contend that it is Skynet at the end
- 56:03of the day, but Donovan, go ahead.
- 56:05How many ways can we rip this part of the article apart?
- 56:07Right?
- 56:07It's just Um, first of all, experts say it's ludicrous.
- 56:11That was, that's obviously a Tesla mode, right?
- 56:13So either somebody scanned an article and they're like, Oh, there's a
- 56:15little good, let's give somebody the fastest mode in the car.
- 56:19And if they don't drive it safely, then we're going to do what?
- 56:22I don't think it even has anything to do with the mode in the car.
- 56:24It's just nowhere.
- 56:25Have I seen where it says the beta is being tested in the cars with
- 56:29the ludicrous mode and whatnot.
- 56:31It's just a thousand Tesla owners.
- 56:34are going to get to pilot the new software and he's vetting them
- 56:37by tracking how they're driving.
- 56:39So, so two things on that.
- 56:40First of all, all those dudes from Hoonigan that we just
- 56:42talked about, they're out there.
- 56:45Second of all, I'm wondering, can you game the system by using the current, we're
- 56:50going to put air quotes around autonomous driving, you know, level, whatever.
- 56:54To get the perfect score.
- 56:56So you're actually using the current system to qualify
- 56:58yourself for the new system.
- 57:00Probably not.
- 57:00Cause I assume he's able to track that.
- 57:02We definitely need Edson for these particular articles, but, you know,
- 57:06I don't know if you guys have ever noticed, like every time Tesla article
- 57:09you read is something they're doing wrong or something that's great.
- 57:12And then you, you get in the actual cars and realize they're doing it all right.
- 57:16And this article looks just like another attempt to twist it.
- 57:18Tony, like you were saying around the, make it seem like.
- 57:21Oh, they're at it again.
- 57:23They're doing something dumb there.
- 57:24You know, you don't want to buy a Tesla.
- 57:25I don't understand why everybody has the hate for the Teslas, but I don't know.
- 57:29I think Edson Paul's, we keep calling him Edson on GarageRat, you know,
- 57:33showed me things like his in his model three, where, you know, there
- 57:37was a feature somebody asked for, Hey, can we get these cameras now?
- 57:41And I'm going to butcher it for the Tesla owners out there, but.
- 57:43There's like the rear view.
- 57:44And then there's like the corner ones that weren't normally on and
- 57:47somebody tweeted it or something.
- 57:49And Musk was like, Oh, that's a great idea.
- 57:50Sent the software upgrade and boom.
- 57:52Now they're there.
- 57:53He also thought that open butthole was a good idea.
- 57:56I mean, come on now.
- 57:57Open butthole.
- 57:58Yeah.
- 57:58You don't remember that?
- 58:01You open the gas tank voice command, you say open butthole, and then it's.
- 58:04Open my butthole, like open the trunk or something ridiculous.
- 58:07He thinks everything's a good idea, but still, you know, the fact
- 58:10that we're quick to market with something, somebody made a suggestion.
- 58:13That's a great idea.
- 58:13Let's do it.
- 58:14That to me makes Tesla the winner in the automotive market.
- 58:17So, but it's also kind of scary too, that your car is controlled
- 58:20by over the air software update.
- 58:23So they can render you useless.
- 58:24I also heard about something that came across my desk earlier about.
- 58:27That Tesla is also talking about the cars will put in their own
- 58:31orders for maintenance parts.
- 58:33Can you imagine if the car ordered its own set of tires suddenly, and then you got
- 58:37docked, you know, 1200 bucks because it's the only tire that's available for Tesla.
- 58:41No, thank you.
- 58:41There's certain parts of that I want to be disconnected from.
- 58:44There's all kinds of, and you should get Paul in here and do maybe just a spin.
- 58:47Specific Tesla interview, but there's all kinds of things about
- 58:50eventually like he can't buy his car.
- 58:52My understanding is he can only lease it because they plan to have this
- 58:54back as a fleet later automated.
- 58:56That's the Ferrari pyramid scheme.
- 58:59Well, it's a, it's a, they can basically have them as automated Ubers down
- 59:02the road and they'll be able to go, you can send it, pick up your dry,
- 59:05clean, all kinds of crazy stuff.
- 59:07So I don't know.
- 59:07It's, I think it's pretty interesting, but I'll take that
- 59:1084 GTI you were talking about.
- 59:12Me too.
- 59:13That's all I need.
- 59:16But, but, but what about the fact that this wasn't breaking news on
- 59:20every major news outlet and thrown in your face every two seconds?
- 59:24I mean, if this had happened to Tesla, we would have been hearing about it
- 59:27for weeks and weeks, and it would have been the hot news on every major news
- 59:31outlet and on TV, it would have broken in as, you know, Breaking news in the
- 59:36middle of, you know, Netflix and binge.
- 59:38I mean, what the heck, come on.
- 59:40Why is it always Tesla?
- 59:41Well, we already know that they burned down in parking garages, right?
- 59:44We've seen that time and time again.
- 59:46So, I mean, is that really news anymore?
- 59:48Well, you know what I'd like to address because it kills me.
- 59:51You want to know why everyone makes a big deal about Tesla is because
- 59:55when you put a bullseye on your back, that's what's going to happen.
- 59:59When you're selling Cubix or Cognia.
- 1:00:02At the price of diamonds.
- 1:00:04Yeah, people are going to pay attention to you.
- 1:00:07And maybe it's my perception, but I don't think Chevy, Ford, any of them
- 1:00:12have ever pretended that their cars are perfect and that they don't have
- 1:00:15recalls and they don't have issues.
- 1:00:17They don't sit there saying that their cars are the best thing since
- 1:00:19the invention of sliced bread.
- 1:00:21So if you act like you're the hottest thing and then you're using Home
- 1:00:25Depot to, you know, Build your cars.
- 1:00:27Of course, you're going to get more attention.
- 1:00:30I mean, I know I'm probably offending people when I say that, but it's just
- 1:00:33like, you know, I don't know, whatever.
- 1:00:36It's a shift in the status quo, I suppose.
