- 0:00Speaker 1: I have an email of interest. Here is it of interest?
- 0:02Speaker 1: It is of interest, all right, because you know I'll
- 0:05Speaker 1: only play this I know if it's of interest. I
- 0:08Speaker 1: know email. Oh in try this came in yesterday. Hello
- 0:17Speaker 1: lords and lady. Hello, my name is Linda. Please feel
- 0:22Speaker 1: free to use my name. Last Friday, I tuned to
- 0:27Speaker 1: the end of the show just as Gina was talking
- 0:30Speaker 1: about her grandmother's a spaghetti sauce recipe and how grateful
- 0:34Speaker 1: she was to have the chance to reclaim it. The
- 0:38Speaker 1: conversation brought me to tears. I was only able to
- 0:41Speaker 1: listen to the end of the show because I had
- 0:44Speaker 1: the day off work and was getting ready for my
- 0:46Speaker 1: own grandmother's funeral. Oh. My grandma Jean was Lebanese by birth.
- 0:52Speaker 1: She married my Italian grandpa Jerry in nineteen fifty nine.
- 0:58Speaker 1: She learned to make spaghetti sauce from her Italian mother
- 1:01Speaker 1: in law. There were no secret ingredients per se, just
- 1:05Speaker 1: the love and care she put into every batch. What
- 1:09Speaker 1: I think set my grandmother's sauce apart is the volume,
- 1:13Speaker 1: and you'll see what I mean see below. My family
- 1:17Speaker 1: is a small army, but even so there were always leftovers.
- 1:22Speaker 1: As Grandpa used to say, if you leave hungry, it's
- 1:25Speaker 1: your own damn fault. Yep, my grandma loved feeding people.
- 1:30Speaker 1: She was never happier than when her entire family was
- 1:33Speaker 1: gathered in her home and she was feeding them. I'm
- 1:38Speaker 1: sharing her recipe in the hope that others might make
- 1:41Speaker 1: it so in a way she can keep feeding people. Cheers.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Friend of the program, Linda. Now, I'm not going to
- 1:49Speaker 1: read it to the whole recipes, because but I'll give
- 1:53Speaker 1: you an idea when she says people, there was always leftovers,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and may give you an idea of what this recipe is.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Grandma's getty sauce for the meat balls, Okay, seven pounds
- 2:04Speaker 1: of extra leine ground beef, one pounds of ground pork,
- 2:09Speaker 1: then some bread for bread crumbs, and eggs, and olive
- 2:12Speaker 1: oil for the sauce. Okay, so that was just for
- 2:16Speaker 1: the seven pounds. Is a lot. Six pounds of hot
- 2:20Speaker 1: Italian sausage links, two cans of crushed tomatoes, one can
- 2:24Speaker 1: of ready cut dice tomatoes, large onions sliced and diced,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and so forth. So it's got. It's got seven pounds
- 2:35Speaker 1: of ground beef, one pound of ground pork, and then
- 2:38Speaker 1: six pounds of hot Italian sausage links. Oh yeah, and
- 2:42Speaker 1: you put in the saucepan. You put this die and
- 2:45Speaker 1: I put it the ground pork. You mix the ground
- 2:47Speaker 1: pork the beef for the sauce, and you make the
- 2:49Speaker 1: meatballs by hand, of course, And I don't say how
- 2:52Speaker 1: many that it supposed to make. Makes a lot, Yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 1: a lot, So you have to make You have to
- 2:57Speaker 1: put those. So you get those and get those going
- 2:59Speaker 1: in the frying pan in some oil, brown them on
- 3:03Speaker 1: all sides. And then you've got the hot Italian sausage
- 3:07Speaker 1: links in a frying pan. Let it boil till the
- 3:09Speaker 1: water evaporates.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That's interesting. You do the meatballs and the sausage. Usually
- 3:13Speaker 2: it's one or the other.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I like, but I like that. You let the
- 3:17Speaker 1: links cool, you cut it into pieces and added to
- 3:19Speaker 1: the sauce. You put the meatballs in the sauce. You
- 3:22Speaker 1: simmer it for about four hours, stir offen to prevent scorching.
- 3:27Speaker 1: That's a huge amount. And then it doesn't say here,
- 3:31Speaker 1: but I mean, how many pounds of spaghetti do you
- 3:34Speaker 1: think you would? Wow? You would need a lot, about
- 3:39Speaker 1: five six pounds. You'd need a lot with that much sauce. Yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 1: And I guess you could always, you know, throw some
- 3:47Speaker 1: more pasta in the pot and there you go. That
- 3:50Speaker 1: just sounds great to me. Wow, even though it's bald meat. Yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I would.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Have to you'd you'd make an accept.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Well, I would, probably, I would. I would take the
- 4:04Speaker 1: meatball and I'd mush it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I think this is nice. So I want to thank
- 4:12Speaker 2: Skip again. He's the one that originally he sent me
- 4:16Speaker 2: my grandmother's recipe that he got from my dad somehow
- 4:19Speaker 2: a long time ago. It's important to pass these things down.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I've told you the story about my mother's recipe, about
- 4:27Speaker 1: my mother's pumpkin pie, and how much I loved my
- 4:30Speaker 1: mother's pumpkin pie. And I said, Mom, would you write
- 4:34Speaker 1: the recipe? Write it down for me so I can
- 4:36Speaker 1: make pumpkin pie. She said yeah, So she wrote it
- 4:39Speaker 1: all out in longhand and gave it to me. And
- 4:42Speaker 1: I made those pumpkin pies for a couple of three years.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And before I realized, you know, you use the Libby's
- 4:50Speaker 1: Pureaid pumpkin And I was standing there looking at the
- 4:54Speaker 1: can and I'm reading the recipe on the Libby's can,
- 4:58Speaker 1: on the label label on the l label label of
- 5:01Speaker 1: the Libby's Libbyes Libbies and and I wait a minute,
- 5:04Speaker 1: and I got my mother's recipe. I'm looking at it's
- 5:06Speaker 1: exactly the same is my mother just wrote me wrote
- 5:09Speaker 1: down the recipe that was already all the lies came.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I called her up. I said, Mom, this is your
- 5:15Speaker 1: special pumpkin pie recipe and it's it's just from the Libby's.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And she's like, well, it's good, isn't it.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yes? And she said, and look carefully, the Libby's doesn't
- 5:28Speaker 1: have a pinch of nutmeg customized. There you go.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And before my father in law died, I gave him
- 5:40Speaker 2: a blank journal and I said, I want you to
- 5:44Speaker 2: write down some of your family recipes in here to keep,
- 5:50Speaker 2: and we had he did it and we have it
- 5:52Speaker 2: and it's great because it's in his handwriting.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And uh, but it's illegible, right yeah, I mean.
- 5:58Speaker 2: But Joe and I were talking about so we did
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know my grandmother's sauce? And I said, you know,
- 6:03Speaker 2: we have that those recipes of your dad, haven't You
- 6:07Speaker 2: haven't made them? And I said, you know, the next
- 6:10Speaker 2: time there's an IID, which is like the feast at
- 6:13Speaker 2: the end of like Ramadi's because you're fast during that,
- 6:17Speaker 2: and I said, we should we should have a feat
- 6:21Speaker 2: even though we're not Muslim, we should have that feast
- 6:23Speaker 2: just in honor of your dad and for our kids
- 6:26Speaker 2: to kind of pass it on down to them.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Why haven't you made any of the recipes from I
- 6:31Speaker 1: don't know. I don't think you have. I don't think
- 6:34Speaker 1: you have to wait till I Eid. I mean that
- 6:36Speaker 1: Ramadan's soon.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's just kind of it would be nice to do
- 6:40Speaker 2: it all together, like these are in honor of your grandfather.
- 6:44Speaker 2: We'll have this food at this time, and I think
- 6:48Speaker 2: it'd be nice.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Well. And oh, my mother's fruit now, my mother's fruitcake.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I made that. I've done it twice. Very difficult to do,
- 6:58Speaker 1: and I had the recipe and there are tons of ingredients.
- 7:03Speaker 1: You have to make them. You want them for Christmas.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You have to make them in like October and then
- 7:07Speaker 1: put them in cheese cloth and then periodically you go, uh,
- 7:11Speaker 1: poor brandy on them. And the first time I did it,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I did it exactly right and they were great. But
- 7:19Speaker 1: then the fruit case I did it again and it
- 7:22Speaker 1: was like and it's like two hundred dollars worth of
- 7:24Speaker 1: stuff and I ruined it. Somehow, they weren't terrible, and.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I just I'll never do it again.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I haven't done it since. Well. Two things. My mother's
- 7:34Speaker 1: secret spaghetti recipe was the Campbell's Tomato soup version. And
- 7:41Speaker 1: when mom died, there was fighting over her cookbook between
- 7:45Speaker 1: my brother and my sister because mam was Oh, say,
- 7:52Speaker 1: there's a fight over the cookbook to see who would
- 7:54Speaker 1: get it and destroy it. They wanted it. But yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 1: like my grandmother was not a good cook. Sue says
- 8:04Speaker 1: that she's keeping a recipe journal of all the food
- 8:06Speaker 1: that our nieces love to give it to them when
- 8:09Speaker 1: they turn eighteen.
- 8:09Speaker 2: What a great idea that she has made for Yeah,
- 8:13Speaker 2: it's a great idea.
- 8:14Speaker 1: All right, Well that was of interest, I'd say, yeah,
- 8:17Speaker 1: but first get those meatballs away from me.
- 8:20Speaker 2: All right, there you go.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Emails, oh, Empress
