- 0:07Speaker 1: Welcome to pick up and deliver the podcast where I
- 0:09Speaker 1: pick up my audio recorders, I step out for a
- 0:10Speaker 1: walk and deliver an episode two while I strolled around,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Brendan Riley. Well, good afternoon, her, Good morning, loyal listeners.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I was doing a good job getting caught up, getting
- 0:26Speaker 1: toward where I need to be to finish on time
- 0:29Speaker 1: for this year, and then I took a week and
- 0:31Speaker 1: a half off. No, well, I didn't take a week
- 0:33Speaker 1: out a half off. I just stopped recording a podcast
- 0:35Speaker 1: for a week and a half. But I'm back on
- 0:37Speaker 1: the horse now, so I'm recording this on Monday, August fifth,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and we are rolling again. Part of the reason I
- 0:44Speaker 1: wasn't recording is that I went to gen Con. I
- 0:47Speaker 1: will tell you all about that in the next episode.
- 0:50Speaker 1: But this episode, being the first one I'm publishing after
- 0:52Speaker 1: August first, means it's time for us to talk about well,
- 0:55Speaker 1: what's on the top of the stack.
- 0:57Speaker 2: All right, top of the stack, So for those of
- 0:59Speaker 2: you need to the post cast.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Top of the Stack is a regular segment that I
- 1:02Speaker 1: do in which I talk about what games I've played
- 1:07Speaker 1: in the last month and what games I wanted to play,
- 1:10Speaker 1: What games I ended up playing and.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Just kind of talk game and talk.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I keep track of things in a various number of ways,
- 1:17Speaker 1: which is amusing, so let's share it. The top of
- 1:20Speaker 1: the stack begins with the month stats. So in July
- 1:24Speaker 1: I had eighty plays of forty nine different games, bringing
- 1:28Speaker 1: my year total to five hundred and forty seven plays
- 1:31Speaker 1: of two hundred and seven different games. At this pace,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I'll hit roughly one thousand plays and four hundred games,
- 1:37Speaker 1: give or take.
- 1:38Speaker 2: That's pretty good.
- 1:39Speaker 1: My shelf of opportunity started last month at sixty six
- 1:43Speaker 1: sixty six games that I own that I haven't played,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and I ended the month at sixty seven. So I
- 1:49Speaker 1: went up one game, which doesn't sound like a lot.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It isn't a.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Lot actually to go up one, but I did play
- 1:55Speaker 1: some games I owned. More importantly, I got some new
- 1:58Speaker 1: games and I played them, so they didn't add to
- 2:01Speaker 1: the stack. So that is my monthly stats. My most
- 2:05Speaker 1: played game in person I had a lot of different
- 2:07Speaker 1: games that I played. I didn't play very many repeatedly
- 2:10Speaker 1: in person, so my most played game in person was
- 2:12Speaker 1: Palaces of Karra.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I've played that twice.
- 2:15Speaker 1: My most played game in online was Pax Premiere Second Edition.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I think I've turned the corner on that game. I
- 2:23Speaker 1: was not sure how I felt about it. I'm starting
- 2:26Speaker 1: to come around. It's still I don't think it's ever
- 2:29Speaker 1: going to be one of my favorites. I don't like
- 2:31Speaker 1: it as much as Pax Renaissance. Something about the way
- 2:34Speaker 1: the discs work. I don't I'm not I don't really
- 2:36Speaker 1: like those as much. But it is enjoyable and I
- 2:38Speaker 1: will keep playing as long as friends keep inviting me.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And I think as I keep playing, I'll get better
- 2:43Speaker 1: at it and it's fun. So that's PAS Premiere Second
- 2:47Speaker 1: Edition most Played game online.
- 2:50Speaker 2: The top of the stack.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I call this whole episode the top of the stack,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but really the top of the stack are the three
- 2:55Speaker 1: games that I'm trying to play this month. Now, as
- 2:58Speaker 1: you'll remember, I always pick four games, and if I
- 3:00Speaker 1: get three of them played, I considered a successful month.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So far this year, I've only had two.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Successful months May and June in which I played all three.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I played three of my four games. This month is
- 3:11Speaker 1: actually tied with April for the worst months in my
- 3:15Speaker 1: Top of the sack because I only played one of
- 3:17Speaker 1: the three games. Now, part of this might be I
- 3:19Speaker 1: picked bad games. The four that I picked were Terrors
- 3:22Speaker 1: of London, Space Freaks, Warp's Edge, and Switch and Signal.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Now these are all games that I didn't have kind
- 3:29Speaker 1: of set up. I hadn't really been thinking about how
- 3:31Speaker 1: I was going to get them played. I just kind
- 3:32Speaker 1: of picked four games it looked interesting to me. As
- 3:34Speaker 1: a result, I didn't get to play any of them
- 3:36Speaker 1: except for Warp's Edge, which is a solo game, and
- 3:39Speaker 1: I ended up having a couple hours to myself and
- 3:42Speaker 1: it was pretty easy to slot that in and play it.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Pretty fun. Two So I've played one of my four,
- 3:49Speaker 1: meaning I've played roughly a third of the potential games
- 3:52Speaker 1: thus far in seven months. If I were doing great
- 3:54Speaker 1: on my top of the sack, I would have played
- 3:56Speaker 1: twenty one games.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Instead, I've now played.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Fourteen, so that's my year's progress on the top of
- 4:02Speaker 1: the stack list. I did try a number of new
- 4:05Speaker 1: games this month. Tend to be exact, so let's talk
- 4:08Speaker 1: about those. I tried. Sand Body of Evidence, Best Served Cold,
- 4:14Speaker 1: The Game of Wolf, The Palaces of Carrara, Warp's Edge,
- 4:18Speaker 1: Metro Samurai, Samurai, Spirit, Gartenbao, and Haven. Lots of different
- 4:24Speaker 1: games there that I've played will be fun to talk
- 4:28Speaker 1: with you about once I have gotten the chance. I
- 4:32Speaker 1: believe I've talked to you about half of those, and yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 1: we'll continue that. Samurai Spirit is an amusing one because
- 4:39Speaker 1: we played. We started playing it at a toggle, got
- 4:41Speaker 1: about halfway through the game, and then we got interrupted
- 4:45Speaker 1: and I never got back to it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: But I did.
- 4:47Speaker 1: We did take another crack at it at the end
- 4:49Speaker 1: of July, July thirty first, in fact, and.
- 4:51Speaker 2: We did get a whole game of it played. We
- 4:53Speaker 2: did win.
- 4:54Speaker 1: In fact, we did win the Samurai Spirit game, as
- 4:56Speaker 1: I recall, or maybe we lost.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I think we won. I think we want next up.
- 5:02Speaker 1: First, expansion plays. I tried six new expansions this month.
- 5:06Speaker 1: We have Exit the Game, the Magical Academy.
- 5:12Speaker 2: We have Dutch Blitz the Blue Expansion Pack.
- 5:14Speaker 1: This one's a little bit of a cheat because the
- 5:17Speaker 1: Dutch Blitz Blue Expansion Pack is just four more Dutch
- 5:20Speaker 1: Blitz decks allowing you to play eight people at a
- 5:23Speaker 1: time if you have both the Green Box and the
- 5:25Speaker 1: Blue Box, So calling you an expansion is a real stretch.
- 5:29Speaker 1: But it does say the Blue Expansion on the box,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and I don't know what else to call it. So
- 5:34Speaker 1: I could just not document it at all and say
- 5:37Speaker 1: both sets of Dutch Blitz are mind.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And they're in one box. But whatever, I don't care.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Thanks up.
- 5:41Speaker 1: We have Spirit Island Branch and Claw.
- 5:44Speaker 2: We played.
- 5:44Speaker 1: My son and I played Spirit Island with our friend Paul,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and he had the Branch and Claw expansion, so we
- 5:50Speaker 1: have played that.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I believe that my son has acquired the Branch and
- 5:55Speaker 1: Claw expansion as well as the Fire one, and so
- 6:00Speaker 1: we'll be in the expansion list for next month. Hopefully
- 6:03Speaker 1: I get an opportunity to try the fire one so
- 6:05Speaker 1: that it's not clogging up my expansion list. We played
- 6:11Speaker 1: the Orleans Invasion expansion, which I liked quite a bit.
- 6:14Speaker 1: We did win it in the second to last turn.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I think we actually had to play through the last turn,
- 6:19Speaker 1: but it was at the second to last turn that
- 6:20Speaker 1: we realized we were gonna win it. That was great,
- 6:22Speaker 1: And then we played smash Up. I found smash Up
- 6:25Speaker 1: at Goodwill. Now, smash Up is not a game I
- 6:28Speaker 1: think a lot of I think it's fine. You're welcome
- 6:31Speaker 1: to go read my smash Up or listen to my
- 6:34Speaker 1: Smashup review to.
- 6:35Speaker 2: See how I feel about it.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I think that might be the game that I say
- 6:40Speaker 1: I should stop playing this because I don't like it.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And then I convinced myself I'll like it, and I.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Go play it again.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And I think when I made that episode, I said
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'm not gonna forget again.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I won't forget how much that I don't like Smash Up.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Nonetheless, I know other people do, and it's pretty accessible,
- 6:54Speaker 1: even if it's a little weird. So when I found
- 6:57Speaker 1: it a goodwill, I bought it for my school board
- 6:59Speaker 1: Game club. But my son spotted it and he's like,
- 7:01Speaker 1: that looks fun.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Can we play that?
- 7:03Speaker 1: Okay, we'll play that. We played it, and you know,
- 7:06Speaker 1: it was better than previous times. It's still not my
- 7:09Speaker 1: favorite game. I think it's too slow. I think it's
- 7:11Speaker 1: very random, and it's too fighty without being interesting about
- 7:16Speaker 1: how it is fighty. Nonetheless, we played and had a
- 7:18Speaker 1: fun time with it, and my son said he'd like
- 7:20Speaker 1: to keep it. So now we have it in the collection,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and it came with two expansions in the box. I
- 7:26Speaker 1: didn't realize they were there till we were setting up
- 7:29Speaker 1: and finds like there's a bunch more decks here than
- 7:31Speaker 1: are in the rule book, and we found the other
- 7:33Speaker 1: rule books scrolled away under the insert. So we have
- 7:35Speaker 1: two expansions in our smash up box. Hence the two
- 7:39Speaker 1: expansions added to my collection, and the two expansions I've
- 7:43Speaker 1: now tried. Oops, you did it again. And World Tour
- 7:46Speaker 1: International Incident. That brings me to twelve new expansions I've
- 7:50Speaker 1: tried this year. We did your chance to play, I
- 7:53Speaker 1: did your chance to play several games out of the dust,
- 7:56Speaker 1: seven of them.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Oh, looks like more than seven.
- 8:00Speaker 1: It was nine of them in fact, and here they
- 8:02Speaker 1: are Mysterium. It had been three years and ten months
- 8:05Speaker 1: and one day since I'd played that Patrician. I played
- 8:08Speaker 1: that a year and a month ago. Welcome to the
- 8:11Speaker 1: Dungeon three years, eight months. Pandemic four years, two months
- 8:15Speaker 1: and twenty nine days, Hero Escape eight years, two months,
- 8:18Speaker 1: twenty nine days, The Adventurers the Pyramid of Horus.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Oh, I did not write now on how long it
- 8:23Speaker 2: had been. That's probably just over a year.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Perseverance Castaway Chronicles two years, three months, four days.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I did like this. I like this one.
- 8:31Speaker 1: It's not as good as some of the other mind
- 8:34Speaker 1: Clash games, but it's fun.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I like it.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Point Salad one year, eight months, seventeen days, Smash Up
- 8:39Speaker 1: one year, twenty two days to bring me to a
- 8:41Speaker 1: total of thirty six games Dust sit Off so far
- 8:44Speaker 1: this year.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Than that, it was a lot of fun.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I did have a couple of notable plays this month.
- 8:49Speaker 1: These are games that I played that wouldn't normally get
- 8:52Speaker 1: called out in terms of how long it's been or
- 8:54Speaker 1: if they're new or something, but I wanted to talk
- 8:56Speaker 1: about them on the podcast. I got to play an
- 8:58Speaker 1: Acrony on the table.
- 8:59Speaker 2: It had been a year.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Of the ten months since I've done that. I've played
- 9:01Speaker 1: a lot online, but it's a different experience on the table.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I really I really enjoy it.
- 9:07Speaker 2: It doesn't hurt that I won.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I wanted to use the fractures of Time Expansion, but
- 9:12Speaker 1: two of the people playing were new to the game
- 9:13Speaker 1: and that's not fair to do to them, So that's
- 9:16Speaker 1: an acrony. We played The Isle of Cats, which is
- 9:19Speaker 1: really fun. We added the kittens in and had a
- 9:23Speaker 1: good old time rescuing cats. I really liked that game.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It's a little bit of card drafting and a little
- 9:31Speaker 1: bit of tile play, sment and a lot of fun.
- 9:33Speaker 1: We had Forest Shuffle, which is a game I've only
- 9:35Speaker 1: played on board Game Arena, but I did pick up
- 9:37Speaker 1: a copy and I really like it in person.
- 9:40Speaker 2: It's got an.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Interesting scoring mechanism that reminds me a little bit of
- 9:43Speaker 1: something like.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It reminds me a little bit.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Of something like Fantasy Realms, because you have whatever your
- 9:51Speaker 1: scoring method is, You're getting points for a bunch of
- 9:54Speaker 1: different things, like each card you have could get you points,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and so the scoring takes long time, but it's great.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Onto the ten for tens, making good progress onto ten
- 10:03Speaker 1: for tens as of before Legacy.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Campaign was done.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Nature and Animal I played a game of ark Nova
- 10:09Speaker 1: nark Nova on the table, putting us into ten. Three
- 10:12Speaker 1: hour games are already done ten. We played one round
- 10:15Speaker 1: of Cute Animal Games with Isle of Cats that puts
- 10:17Speaker 1: us up to five halfway on that one. The escape
- 10:20Speaker 1: room games we played three this month. Body of Evidence
- 10:22Speaker 1: unlocked Extraordinary Adventures, Restart and Exit the game The Magical Academy,
- 10:27Speaker 1: putting me at nine. Did not play any novelty games
- 10:30Speaker 1: this month. I'm gonna have to do two a month,
- 10:33Speaker 1: one a month from here on out, plus a couple
- 10:36Speaker 1: more to finish that up. I already talked about the
- 10:39Speaker 1: Spirit Island and Arleon's expansions have put us up to ten.
- 10:42Speaker 1: There the alphabet, We're at ten playing our alphabet A
- 10:46Speaker 1: through J, We're at ten, alphabet K through T. We
- 10:49Speaker 1: played Outsession, which was the only letter was missing. Oh,
- 10:52Speaker 1: played that on the table. That puts me up to ten.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm still not doing very well on the UTWO Z
- 10:57Speaker 1: and number entries. And finally, my EH index is eleven.
- 11:02Speaker 1: The eleven games I've played eleven times each our Daybreak Guy, Project, Packs, Renaissance, Obsession,
- 11:08Speaker 1: The Time You Killed Me, Frost Haven, Matay and I Resarkana.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Through the Ages, and ark Nova.
- 11:14Speaker 1: No progress on painting this month on my shelf of Opportunity.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Like I said, we only went up one game, so
- 11:22Speaker 1: that was a nice change of pace. This month, I
- 11:25Speaker 1: acquired and played Dutch Blitz, the Game of Wolf for
- 11:28Speaker 1: a Shuffle and Smash Up, so none of those ended
- 11:31Speaker 1: up on my shelf of Opportunity. I did add Deadly
- 11:35Speaker 1: Dirigibles and pig Mania to the shelf, so that is
- 11:39Speaker 1: an element of a higher level of games to be played.
- 11:43Speaker 1: But I also removed Warp's Edge and the Palaces of
- 11:46Speaker 1: Kara by playing those, so six' one a half a
- 11:49Speaker 1: dozen of the other in terms of adding and removing.
- 11:53Speaker 1: But somehow I went up one game. I'm not sure
- 11:54Speaker 1: what's going on there. There must be one more game.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I added that I'm not lessen here. As I said,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I acquired two new expansions. We have the Katan five
- 12:05Speaker 1: to six player and Dutch Blitz expansion, both added to
- 12:10Speaker 1: the collection. Oh no, we have that's bits played. So
- 12:13Speaker 1: it's just the Katan five to six player expansion that
- 12:15Speaker 1: I acquired.
- 12:16Speaker 2: And that has not been played yet, so we're at
- 12:18Speaker 2: sixty six. We went to sixty seven in that category
- 12:22Speaker 2: as well.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Finally, I've had a really interesting collection size update I
- 12:27Speaker 1: thought i'd share with you. Beginning at the beginning of July,
- 12:30Speaker 1: my collection was five hundred and ninety two games and
- 12:33Speaker 1: I was able to sell seven games.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I sold Rivettheads, Walk in the Park, Retreat.
- 12:37Speaker 1: To Darkmoor, Bunny Kingdom, Ryu BASTIONI Five Minute Mystery, so.
- 12:41Speaker 2: That starts off a drop by seven, right, Okay?
- 12:44Speaker 1: Then I acquired Dutch Blitz and the Dutch Blitz Blue expansion.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I acquire, but of course that's expansion shouldn't count. I
- 12:51Speaker 1: got pig Mania and the Game of Wolf. I got Deadly,
- 12:55Speaker 1: Dastardly Dirigibles, Forest Shuffle and Smash Up, so that should
- 13:02Speaker 1: put me at seven maybe eight.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I think eight, so I should be.
- 13:06Speaker 1: One up from where I was before. That should put
- 13:09Speaker 1: me one down from where I was before. But this
- 13:12Speaker 1: is where board game Geek sabotaged me. So the way
- 13:16Speaker 1: I keep track of the size of my collection, I
- 13:18Speaker 1: don't go through and count every game I own each month.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Of course, instead I try to keep it updated on
- 13:22Speaker 2: board game Geek.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I had two problems that mess with my collection size,
- 13:26Speaker 1: which means that instead of going down one, I'm in
- 13:30Speaker 1: fact going up instead of sorry, instead of yeah it.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Instead of going down two, I'm going up four. So
- 13:39Speaker 1: I'm going from five ninety two to five ninety six
- 13:41Speaker 1: because I have three additional games listed that I didn't
- 13:46Speaker 1: have before. Now three of these are practicality, I have
- 13:49Speaker 1: three games. So, as you all know, I'm part of
- 13:51Speaker 1: x y Z Game Labs, and the XYZ Game Labs company.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Has a whole bunch of games that we've acquired. Some
- 13:59Speaker 2: of them we bought, some of them we traded for.
- 14:02Speaker 1: But the idea is that there's a bunch of games
- 14:04Speaker 1: that we have in our game library for play and
- 14:07Speaker 1: study in our work. Now, most of those games are
- 14:11Speaker 1: in one place, but some of them are in others,
- 14:13Speaker 1: and some of them we sort of take on extended loan.
- 14:15Speaker 1: In the past, I've borrowed Atlantis, Rising LITERATEI Illiterati, and
- 14:22Speaker 1: Spirit Island from that group, and I am sort of
- 14:26Speaker 1: keeping them on permanent loan until somebody else says they
- 14:29Speaker 1: want them to read them, which means that for all
- 14:32Speaker 1: intents and practice, intents and purposes, they are in my
- 14:35Speaker 1: collection and I've added them to my collection, so like
- 14:38Speaker 1: if someone's looking for something to give me or want
- 14:40Speaker 1: you talk to me about it, they can see that
- 14:42Speaker 1: I have those games quote unquote, I do have a
- 14:44Speaker 1: note in my collection notes that those don't belong to me,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but long term loan, the practicalities are the same. So
- 14:51Speaker 1: that raised my collection size by three. And I don't
- 14:53Speaker 1: want to have to constantly remember, like, oh, there's these
- 14:55Speaker 1: three games that I've marked us owned, but I don't
- 14:57Speaker 1: actually own them, so I'm not going to call them owned.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Have to mentally reduce the number on board Game Geek
- 15:02Speaker 1: by three every time I do it, or leave them
- 15:04Speaker 1: off and maybe have people not realize I have access
- 15:07Speaker 1: to those games or whatever. So I'm just I'm calling
- 15:09Speaker 1: them owned for now. But the other three So that's
- 15:12Speaker 1: where three of the new games come from. And like
- 15:15Speaker 1: I said, I should have been down too, but instead
- 15:17Speaker 1: with three, I'm up one. But what about the other three? Brendon, Well,
- 15:20Speaker 1: these are even worse. So I told you I got
- 15:22Speaker 1: Dutch Blitz and the Dutch Blitz Blue Expansion. Well, the
- 15:27Speaker 1: Dutch Blitz Blue Expansion is just another copy of Dutch
- 15:30Speaker 1: Blitz with different images on the back of the decks.
- 15:34Speaker 1: So it is a standalone expansion, which means that as
- 15:37Speaker 1: far as Board Game Geek is concerned, it is a
- 15:40Speaker 1: separate game. So when I look at Board Game Geek,
- 15:43Speaker 1: if I haven't marked owned and I say exclude expansions,
- 15:46Speaker 1: it doesn't matter.
- 15:47Speaker 2: It still comes up as an owned game.
- 15:50Speaker 1: The same is also true of both of the expansions
- 15:53Speaker 1: of Smash Up that are in the copy of Smash
- 15:55Speaker 1: Up I purchase.
