- Hey, I'm Kai Rivers, and this is Studio Signal — your daily M&E intelligence briefing, brought to you by Harkins Capital. Let's get into it. Alright, studio fam, it's Sunday, March eighth, and we've got some interesting numbers and laughs coming out of the entertainment world this weekend. First up, let's talk box office because we've got a classic David and Goliath story playing out. Pixar's latest original animated film, 'Hoppers,' jumped for joy with a really solid $46 million U.S. opening. This is a huge win for Pixar, especially after last summer's 'Elio' didn't quite hit the mark. 'Hoppers' actually marks the best opening for a Pixar original since 'Coco' way back in 2017. It's clear that audiences are here for original, heartfelt animation, especially when it comes with that Pixar polish and an A CinemaScore. Now, on the other side of the ring, Maggie Gyllenhaal's much-anticipated, punkish take on 'The Bride of Frankenstein,' simply titled 'The Bride!,' pretty much bombed. It only managed a dismal $7.3 million opening weekend. Ouch. This is a tough blow for Warner Bros., ending their impressive streak of nine consecutive domestic releases hitting number one on their opening weekends. It just goes to show you, even with a strong director and a classic IP, the box office can be a brutal mistress. Shifting gears to something a little lighter, but still packing a punch, 'Saturday Night Live' delivered another hilarious cold open last night. They skewered the recent news surrounding Kristi Noem, with the former Secretary of Homeland Security played by Ashley Padilla, insisting she wasn't fired, but rather "self-deported." And Colin Jost reprised his role as Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who, get this, called the current conflict in Iran a "situationship" and definitely not a war. It's classic SNL, taking the headlines and turning them into pointed, witty commentary. It always amazes me how quickly they turn around those sketches. And finally, for all you 'Survivor' super fans out there, some fun behind-the-scenes intel on the show 'Send Help.' Apparently, the one and only Jeff Probst almost had a cameo in the movie, but it just couldn't work out with his schedule. Why? Because he was too busy with 'Survivor 50'! The writers of 'Send Help' actually revealed that they wrote a cameo for him at the very end, playing himself, where he'd say "Nice shot, Linda!" to Rachel McAdams' character, implying they were on the same celebrity golf team. It's a testament to how busy he keeps, even with milestone seasons like 'Survivor 50' bringing in celebrity cameos in other ways. What these stories show us is the constant push and pull in media and entertainment. Audiences are flocking to original, high-quality animation, while some big-budget reboots struggle to find their footing. And live television, like SNL, continues to find its relevance by reacting to the very latest news. It's a dynamic ecosystem, that's for sure. That's your signal for today. Thanks for tuning in — I'm Kai Rivers. See you tomorrow.
