- 0:44Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:48I'm Curtis Wilson. I'm Bryan Sigma, buddy.
- 0:51How you doing tonight? Sunday?
- 0:53Night. We got one after a second.
- 0:57We got one after we win. Yeah, we get to, we get to do
- 1:00this after a win. I forgot what it felt like.
- 1:02Feels so much better to do one of these without a win even
- 1:05though it's only been two weeks. But you know, the the losses
- 1:10just take more of a toll on his right and you know you got a lot
- 1:15of fun tonight, not a discussions about the game and
- 1:18some more fun stuff with something you got into earlier
- 1:22this week. And Brian, the finish line is
- 1:26Tuesday for you, right? Yeah, if I can get one, really,
- 1:29if I can get through tomorrow night, the the next month is
- 1:33going to go a lot smoother. Well at least things slow down a
- 1:37little bit. My meat becomes more manageable
- 1:41so I'll take the slow down he pile.
- 1:46He passed the mile marker of finishing Youth Sports in the
- 1:50fall. This weekend Sports is over.
- 1:53I got one of my two classes wrapped up this past Wednesday,
- 1:58I I've talked about it a little bit when we went last time.
- 2:01So, yeah. And then the last of will the
- 2:07second of three big presentations for the other
- 2:11class takes place tomorrow. So yeah, once I get that knocked
- 2:16out, should be pretty smooth. Sailing down the home stretch.
- 2:19Well, it's much easier for you from here on out.
- 2:23Yeah, yeah, I'm looking, I'm looking forward to, you know, I
- 2:27know we're going To the holidays, which is always
- 2:29something to look forward to. But it's nice to take a little
- 2:32bit off the plate gradually, as we ease into that, because
- 2:35obviously, with all that stuff comes a little bit extra stuff
- 2:39for for me to do as well. So it'll be nice having a little
- 2:43bit lighter low to compensate for some of that new stuff
- 2:46coming down the pike, absolutely.
- 2:48And see here a little lucky this year.
- 2:49When you make that move, you don't have to do what I had to
- 2:53do. Speaking of holidays.
- 2:55Neighbor up the street, put the tree out.
- 2:58I got the look, you need to go to the attic and start pulling
- 3:02everything down. So so before the game Saturday,
- 3:08pulling a little bit of Christmas down, and then pretty
- 3:11much all morning, pulling Christmas decorations down.
- 3:14And I gave my wife a little grief that she was like, listen,
- 3:18you know how much stuff we have, right?
- 3:19I'm like, yeah, we decorate for Christmas.
- 3:22You've been here? We decorate.
- 3:23You know, we got to like it. We tried to start Thanksgiving
- 3:27week, I wouldn't get everything up until the week of Christmas
- 3:29and I want to enjoy the decoration fight.
- 3:31You know what hon, whatever you want.
- 3:34Let's do it. It's not a big deal.
- 3:37I mean, I get the one to like compartmentalize Halloween than
- 3:42Thanksgiving than Christmas. But you know for folks that
- 3:46either travel on Thanksgiving or constantly on the go that
- 3:51weekend, you know, you can't always get it done.
- 3:55I mean we got we got a game to watch after after Thanksgiving
- 3:59game, want to, we're going to be one to get the damn decorations.
- 4:04Put up, never get them on, get get at least a good start going
- 4:08the weekend before, which is probably what we're going to do.
- 4:11Probably next weekend, we're going to get a good jump on it
- 4:14and then wrap it up. Once we get back from my mom's
- 4:18the following weekend after Thanksgiving.
- 4:20So, There you go. There you go.
- 4:24All right, Brian, let's jump into it man.
- 4:27Hokies with. I mean, I prediction, we thought
- 4:31it was going to be a close game but offense defense and special
- 4:36teams all show out Hokies blow the doors off of Duke.
- 4:41Kind of a Bittersweet Revenge game for Justin Fuente speaking
- 4:46of, because two years ago was the ugly game in the lane, he
- 4:49blows out Juke 48:17 and Let's flip on the offense.
- 4:53First Prime, finally Hokies have returned back to over. 500 yards
- 4:59of total offense. We can do that.
- 5:02I didn't know we could do that. I didn't know we had that in
- 5:06this. But, I mean, it started on the
- 5:09running game though, right? The running game got going.
- 5:13You know what 297 was over 300 before the kneel down?
- 5:18Yep, the noodles. So we yeah.
- 5:23So over 300 and probably, the more impressive was like, it was
- 5:27over 300 and the Carrie thing, click, get it back up here.
- 5:33It's one thing. I did not know take wonderful
- 5:35me, but I had it right here. There it is.
- 5:41After Dean, on 40 carries 141 carries, do the math, that's
- 5:47over seven to carry, I don't care who you're playing, you're
- 5:52on the ball that many times and get seven to carry, you're going
- 5:55to win and usually you're going to do what we did, which is
- 5:58absolutely blow the doors off of them.
- 6:01And let's talk about the guy who absolutely led the way monster
- 6:07first happen, Monster game overall, Raheem Blackshear Ron
- 6:11117 yards on the ground, 9.8 per carry.
- 6:17What did you see? Just overall in his game on
- 6:21Saturday, he was definitely he's in his game, has gotten a lot
- 6:26better as the seasons went along and this was this was the big,
- 6:31the big game. I think all of us were kind of
- 6:33waiting for for Blackshear and and it finally happened happen
- 6:36against Duke. I think, just because he's
- 6:39gotten better with his Is like one cut and go.
- 6:42He's been more decisive with his with his Cuts.
- 6:48I think that's really helped his game.
- 6:51Duke was really poor old a set in the edge getting to the spill
- 6:55area and he was able to really run inside and outside and just
- 7:02he was able to really get to the second level and when he gets
- 7:05the second level, he shift he makes guys miss and he did a
- 7:09good job of Showing some of the speed he doesn't necessarily
- 7:13have Breakaway speed but he has good speed and can can turn
- 7:17things into a big play there. So great job, I Blackshear
- 7:23Malachi Thomas unfortunately had a rough day but we had a key.
- 7:27Shaun, King, sighting and boy did it blow up it absolutely did
- 7:33here in T he re introduced himself to us Hokies 94 95, I
- 7:38mean 10 yards a carry off of had some Been in there.
- 7:41We'll discuss that in a little while here and then, you know,
- 7:44the for went a comment that really caught my ear so it
- 7:48quoted here, you know, I think it's a glimpse of what Keshawn
- 7:52is capable of. I love Keshawn King and
- 7:54unrelenting in my desire to continue to do things the right
- 7:56way. He knows that that's the
- 7:58beautiful part about it and there's not a more pleasurable
- 8:01person to be around when he's right?
- 8:03Hey, this game. I felt like it was time to
- 8:05reward him with some opportunities and he did not
- 8:07disappoint. So sounds like he was not
- 8:10completely Italy in the doghouse but obviously, because he had
- 8:14been on kick return, making it an effort.
- 8:16They're getting a carry here and there, but obviously worked back
- 8:20towards getting in that rotation and then with the, you know, the
- 8:24bad day for Malachi with only 10 yards, not not great at all for
- 8:30him on seven carries, he added that extra spark.
- 8:35You've ran hard and I think you talked about Rahim and even with
- 8:41Keyshawn, some of the runs yesterday, the vision and the
- 8:45decisive Cuts, they got to a point.
- 8:49They saw where it was and they just cut, they did not run into
- 8:53the back of anyone. And I don't know if you saw this
- 8:57last night on Twitter or today, Brian Khalil Herbert retweeting
- 9:00him. Kind of giving it a, give them a
- 9:03congratulations and it seems like there.
- 9:07I don't know if he's in there ear sending the messages of what
- 9:10to see what to talk about. But both of those guys, it's you
- 9:14see so many times. These guys were so athletic like
- 9:16this, they try to get out. They try to get out.
- 9:20When in reality you never made an offensive lineman.
- 9:24Things are being set up. You have to choose where to go.
- 9:29You got to be able to number one trust that the blocks will be
- 9:33there. But also read the blocks as we
- 9:35happen because sometimes depending on what the defense
- 9:37does, there's going to be some some adjustment to that aiming
- 9:42Point potentially. So there's a couple things that
- 9:46happen in real time and the Really best backs can be both
- 9:51patient and decisive at the same time and that's what Herbert was
- 9:54so good at, he was patient but he was decisive once he made a
- 9:58decision of how He was setting things up.
- 10:02He get through there, and he had the ability to turn a big one
- 10:07into into a touchdown, just with his speed and his ability to
- 10:12break those arm tackles at the second level.
- 10:16And and Rahim showed, you know, promised there and I think this
- 10:20was really we really focused on getting the running backs
- 10:23involved in the game plan altogether from Jump Street and
- 10:28and and they showed out they show that they were capable of
- 10:31getting the job done. They really did.
- 10:34I mean, they showed they were capable of getting the job, they
- 10:37go over 200 combined on, you know, not that many carries.
- 10:41I mean, I think they were over eight per carry which is just
- 10:45insane combined on a little bit more than that actually.
- 10:50But let's talk about also a front, right?
- 10:52Let's look at the offensive lineman Brock Hoffman was out so
- 10:55I'm street clothes food on the sidelines.
- 10:59Be interesting to see if he's back any more games this season
- 11:02or potentially the bowl. Game, he did participate in the
- 11:04senior day ceremony. So Kind of the writing's on the
- 11:08wall there but we started out our starting five.
- 11:10When we first rolled out was Luke tenuta the seat of Smith.
- 11:15Johnny, Jordan South stains and Darrell Smith and Will Smith
- 11:19written 25. I'm sure that warms your heart
- 11:22to see a low number on the linemen and then we saw, you
- 11:26know, Caden more and fabric laments, get some action as well
- 11:30on the right side. What was your assessment of the
- 11:33line? Pretty much in all aspects.
- 11:36Yesterday, when I saw more and Parker out there, that's when
- 11:42the line look the best in my opinion and I thought Johnny did
- 11:47a good job at Center. We didn't quite have as much
- 11:54push in the middle as we've had in some other weeks.
- 11:57But I think he did a good job of getting everyone set up in this
- 12:03in place of Brock because any and he's ran Center come for us
- 12:07this year with Brock moving, moving along the line early in
- 12:11the season. We were still working out who
- 12:13are five were but I think that more and Parker showed have
- 12:21shown some some jump in the last few weeks and Silas was pretty
- 12:27steady when he was in there. So I mean overall good effort by
- 12:31the offensive line. That wasn't a whole lot of
- 12:33glaring, things that popped out to me, we could have been a
- 12:37little bit better on the inside Zone, kind of some of the
- 12:41Insight combos there. But other than that, good job
- 12:45overall. Let's flip and talk about more
- 12:49in Parker. More obviously, has more games
- 12:54under his belt. Parker, a few behind.
- 12:58But you talked about that was the best.
- 13:00We look, is just one of those things.
- 13:02The reps are finally catching up and it's the whole head versus
- 13:07feet. Hey, I'm going to do with an
- 13:09offensive lineman head feet and arms.
- 13:12It's, they're not thinking anymore.
- 13:13It's just becoming natural. When they hear the play call,
- 13:16know what I'm going to do if he puts his hand on my shoulder.
- 13:19I know how mother is it? Just Coming more natural because
- 13:23of just means they're no longer thinking about what they have to
- 13:26do. It's more about, you know, once
- 13:29they do it, how the defense reaction, then what they have to
- 13:31do to counter that in real time. So, essentially everything after
- 13:36the snap. Not, not thinking a whole lot
- 13:38before the snap, which is good, that that you don't want your
- 13:42linemen thinking. Before they take their first
- 13:44step, you want them to know exactly what they're doing,
- 13:47exactly where they're going, and what they're going to do when
- 13:49they get there. So I think that's the big thing.
- 13:53You see more? Come on a lot, a lot more
- 13:56lately. He had a some really good
- 13:59blocks. I think on a couple screens down
- 14:01field Parker was down down field on my screen, getting some
- 14:04blocks. So I mean they were doing some
- 14:06good stuff in various ways, it wasn't just in the Run game, so
- 14:11really like the potential there. We got to see if they're going
- 14:14to take another step going into next season.
- 14:18But definitely early Returns on both of them are Better than
- 14:22anticipated. Great to hear.
- 14:25Right. Well let's not forget the main
- 14:27getting every snap Braxton Burmeister not skidding did get
- 14:30some stats and Braixen went down with a little wrist injury but
- 14:36he did get back out there and I just say this prom, when we
- 14:39actually run read options and we have some designed runs and he's
- 14:44allowed to scramble, but in keeping them under that 10
- 14:48threshold, this actually helps not only Helmet on.
- 14:51It helps his team autonomy. He had 71 yards on just nine
- 14:55carries. Yeah, and it was a plethora of
- 14:59things. Yeah we saw had the offense
- 15:02opened up once he was keeping more once he showed that he was
- 15:07a threat in the running game but nine carries 71 yards.
- 15:10I mean that's a big day that's that's probably the best day
- 15:13he's had since at some point last year in terms of running
- 15:18the football and what he did I mean he didn't get hurt on a
- 15:24play where he's keeping it. I mean, and he did a good job of
- 15:29getting down. When he did take hits, it wasn't
- 15:32those type of hits where, you know, it's a big lick or an
- 15:35awkward fall, he he was able to go down, get back up, playing
- 15:40the next play and I think that's what we probably needed.
- 15:44Most of the season to really open things up in the running
- 15:48game, for the running backs, early on.
- 15:51And obviously, if you could run effectively that that helps in
- 15:55the passing game and we saw those numbers, take some steps
- 15:59this week as well. Oh absolutely.
- 16:02We did 94, 15, very efficient day.
- 16:08Passing the ball, 215 yards three touchdowns.
- 16:11The one awkward interception which could have been
- 16:14disastrous, but keep practicing credit for holding on to the
- 16:17castle egg before somebody could get there to clean it up.
- 16:22But I think with the passing, he is what he is.
- 16:26I don't and I don't think unless you have an exceptional teacher
- 16:30in that room which were showing that we don't that he's probably
- 16:33not going to grow much more than what he is.
- 16:36And it's you're going to have to have a really good running game.
- 16:40Yeah. And I think that's the so I'll
- 16:42say this and I'll look at last year, we had really what for
- 16:47sample size games from last year, that kind of won't think
- 16:50about what Braxton was going to be this year before the season
- 16:54started. We had the to it.
- 16:56Early in the season and the two at the end of the season.
- 16:59Yep. And I think really, if you sum
- 17:02those four games up, we're getting about the same Braxton
- 17:06that we got last year, a couple top in games or kind of like
- 17:11those into the season ones and the bottom end games are our
- 17:14kind of closer to what he did in those in that NC State game and
- 17:19that Duke game. So, It kind of hit is what it
- 17:26is. And We see that when we can run
- 17:30the ball effectively, and when we do incorporate him into the
- 17:34Run game, deliberately he can be more efficient with the
- 17:38football, but in terms of Sling, it around and throwing deep
- 17:43balls, I mean, that's not what he's going to do.
- 17:45Consistently, we can pop one every now and again when it's
- 17:49set up, when it's schemed when he's got the wide open throw and
- 17:53he could step into the throw. Yeah.
- 17:55Like they all those things have to be in place for deep. balls
- 17:59to B2B the bread-and-butter and it baffles me that it took so
- 18:05long to Figure out that we need to do all these things in order
- 18:12for him to have success in the passing game.
- 18:14Yeah, it just shows you that there is maybe some I don't want
- 18:17to say it's ignorance. But something along those lines
- 18:21in that room to not understand that and I mean and give credit
- 18:25this week to to the offensive game plan because you always
- 18:29talk about, we need to ease them into it first play the game was
- 18:33a shot but the first player game was a shot that was set up
- 18:36perfect. And he just overthrew.
- 18:39All right, that's fine. What I really enjoy do is we
- 18:44took we didn't go crazy on shots like we did against Pitt, we
- 18:48didn't try to throw a ton of screens like we did against West
- 18:52Virginia or the medium range, and short games.
- 18:54Like we've seen a town. It was a good mix of passes.
- 18:59Yeah. Essentially.
- 19:00Do you get no point in time could key on exactly what we
- 19:04were doing in the passing game. And that's why we that's why he
- 19:09was so efficient, you know, averaging over, 15 yards, an
- 19:13attempt. You know, or right at 15 yards,
- 19:16an attempt. And when you're getting, when
- 19:19you're in that, any time, you break 10, in my opinion.
- 19:24You're doing good, you know? But a 15-yard attempt is is
- 19:31really good. And I mean we're going to get
- 19:37into some at the end here. So hold your tongue Brian
- 19:39because I know what you wanted to.
- 19:42He's a hold his tongue. Let's move it.
- 19:44Let's let's talk about the use of marine Blackshear and Keshawn
- 19:50King in the passing game. Both score TD's.
- 19:53That again, you've always given them credit and I don't know how
- 19:57much of a tell how much is Justin Fuente or other people in
- 20:00that room that play design on the key.
- 20:03Shaun King touchdown, do Dallas brilliance Yeah, I mean it's a
- 20:08good design and the designs that are there.
- 20:12I've never had that much criticism of my criticism is we
- 20:18don't Target all the field consistently enough and we have
- 20:25plays like that in our back pocket and we don't fucking call
- 20:29them ever like why are we sitting on this for Duke when
- 20:35we're sub 500 like where the fuck was this?
- 20:40PC? Because the played it, the
- 20:43penguin Keshawn King, even without a running thread of a
- 20:48quarterback. Because, sorry, here I got the
- 20:51burps today that play was not a, it was just a straight outside
- 20:57zone, right? That's all the play was it was
- 20:59an outside Zone, fake. Outside Zone, fake.
- 21:04It showed one of the inside guys want like a little flare out and
- 21:08then post wheel combo. That could have been used
- 21:12against BC that could have been used against Pitt that could
- 21:15have been used potentially against Syracuse.
- 21:17What. Absolutely going to use me
- 21:18against pick his pit plays, a lot of the same type of
- 21:22techniques and coverage on defense that that do plays.
- 21:26So what the hell are we doing there?
- 21:29And let me, let me look like he was on a Mars.
- 21:32He didn't know what he was doing there.
- 21:34He was completely lost. Good play, Bad Day.
- 21:39We've seen it all the time. But what I say I said in man
- 21:42coverage, he was suspect and he got but you got burned about
- 21:47three times and coverage, like big plays, not just not just
- 21:52left. I just given up completions.
- 21:54Yeah. All right, let's talk about the
- 21:57other guy. We already mentioned in Raheem
- 21:58Blackshear, called a touchdown, had a big gain in a screen and
- 22:03then another one. For the TD, I'm assuming you
- 22:06were looking your chops when you saw both those place called
- 22:08because just watching them the setups.
- 22:12Juke on the on the touchdown when we were in Jet Sweep fake.
- 22:18And that whole defense went, whoop to the opposite side of
- 22:22the field. When bryceton done shit, it was
- 22:25like a three on one for the offensive linemen like we don't
- 22:29have anybody to block it. So, if you'd like to take that
- 22:32guy, I mean. Tell me what you felt about.
- 22:37Both those screens just the design of them.
- 22:40Again, good designs. Where are they in other games
- 22:43this year? Yeah, I mean the first one I
- 22:47think we had seen maybe once or twice that that second one with
- 22:51that motion. Yeah.
- 22:55I think that's maybe the first time we've seen that all year.
- 23:01And, you know, again, I just talked about it a little bit but
- 23:05I think That's some of the problem.
- 23:06Like I love getting things, getting the running backs
- 23:10involved in the passing game here.
- 23:13I like screen out those. I know some people out there and
- 23:15Hokie Nation like another screen when screens work they fucking
- 23:20work. Now the problem is that they're
- 23:22a often called at the wrong Times by our coordinator and be
- 23:27we run the same three over and over and don't incorporate some
- 23:31of this different motion. Different looks different design
- 23:34to really Keep the defense off-balance and show them
- 23:37something they haven't seen before.
- 23:40So again, I'm not sure why we're breaking all these, these things
- 23:44out against Duke other than it being really.
- 23:49A must-win to not be the worst team in the conference.
- 23:55So you know, we've at least established that.
- 23:58Virginia Tech not the worst team.
- 24:00In the ACC, not the worst team in the ACC by far and it's
- 24:07because of guys like three couple guys, we've mentioned in
- 24:09Tavia, John Robinson, and I tell you, every time he gets his ball
- 24:13on the punt return, you just feel like it's coming, you know,
- 24:16he had three yesterday, 73, including a big 43-yarder that
- 24:21just put the field again. It's a, it's a net punt.
- 24:26Nightmare, I'm going to the first party at like 15 yards are
- 24:29like the 35-yard punt with the 15 yard return.
- 24:33Hey, maybe I'm getting anything on that and then just, you know,
- 24:37overall for 478 Had the Fail Mary where he was just short of
- 24:44the end zone called and some other short, couple other short
- 24:48intermediate routes. One was a really nice hook that
- 24:52Coldplay's later, we score a touchdown and then an out route
- 24:55and just every week it seems like his his his route tree gets
- 25:01bigger, he gets more confidence. You know, where it looks like
- 25:09Trey Turner. Is leaving next year.
- 25:11I think Tavian is going to easily step and do the number
- 25:14one roll. Yeah.
- 25:17And what he does he really can line up all over the field.
- 25:22He's probably more of a natural fit in the slot but he can line
- 25:25him up outside. He's got the full complement of
- 25:28the route tree. You mentioned the Fail.
- 25:31Mary. Let's talk about that too.
- 25:33In a drive with just a little bit.
- 25:37Why do we go hella conservative in that situation?
- 25:41Then as soon as you bust 11 good, run y'all.
- 25:43Okay, well now now we wasted all this time.
- 25:46Now, we need to hurry up again. I'm not mad about that.
- 25:51Can I tell you what? I'm mad about?
- 25:53What you mad about? 40 seconds left, we're at the
- 25:5647. Yeah, we're about.
- 25:59We're about what? 10 10 yards from Romo?
- 26:02Give me a shot to kick it, right?
- 26:04Yep. We have three timeout 3, not 1,
- 26:07not 2. We have all three it.
- 26:10Weird like, going down field or going sideline routes.
- 26:14You can still run screens, you can still run the ball.
- 26:17You can still take shots over the middle of the field.
- 26:20We were acting like we nailed. Why are we acting like we've got
- 26:24to either get a bunch of yards or get out of bounds.
- 26:27Like neither of those are have to use, well, you sit here and
- 26:31it just get it's it's it's ineptitude because you should
- 26:37know. I've got three timeouts.
- 26:38If we bring the tenure over the middle, we burn one quick setup.
- 26:43And then I can sit there and And so now we're at the 37, do the
- 26:47math? That's about a 53-yard.
- 26:49ER, Romo's made their what, which one the 51-yard of look
- 26:54good from 61 earlier this year? Yeah, I know the wind was
- 26:57whipping yesterday and he played into that first kick that he
- 27:01missed because he thought I was going to bring tried to put, he
- 27:03tried to put that into the wind and then the wind didn't do
- 27:06anything for him and in doing. So the rest of them, he just
- 27:09ain't dead center and bang them through.
- 27:12Yeah, but you get you get tenure Parts timeout, let's get 10 more
- 27:17minutes. Now you have 225 where you can
- 27:19legitimately take three shots at the end zone or take one more
- 27:25shot and try to get 10 to 15 yards closer.
- 27:28It's just bad. It's, it's just terrible play
- 27:32calling because your terrible play, calling, terrible game
- 27:35management, everything communication between the play
- 27:39caller, and the person that is responsible for getting timeouts
- 27:43on the field. Namely corn and Fuente and went
- 27:46they went they not telling him. I have three timeouts.
- 27:51Your entire Playbook is open. Yeah, I know you don't and
- 27:56that's part of like communicate. Make sure your play caller is
- 28:01doing what you think needs to be done because act buck stops with
- 28:05you buddy. Yep. 100%.
- 28:10All right Ron. Let's just talk about the last
- 28:12two receivers real quick. Trey only had one catch Circus,
- 28:16catch, but I noticed on a few other passing plays after that
- 28:21one, big Circus catch and then targeting him.
- 28:24The safety was over top him. The rest of the day he was doing
- 28:27was not getting any more single man coverage and I think that
- 28:33helped open up it helped open up the Run game and it helped open
- 28:36up you know Thanks for guys. Like Caleb Smith.
- 28:40Who had one of his. It wasn't to statistically big
- 28:43but got caught a touchdown from walk on to scholarship to
- 28:47catching touchdowns from up here, in Louisa County, big, big
- 28:52play tray. Let everybody else get the big
- 28:54plays because they were scared as hell of him and Caleb Smith
- 28:58taking it home. Yeah.
- 29:00And I think Trey was just happy to play that game.
- 29:03Yeah. If we're if we're being honest
- 29:04with, like, knowing that It's going to be his last game in
- 29:09Lane. Just the fact he was able to go
- 29:11out there and and finish the game.
- 29:14I think that was big for him and shout and shout out to Trey
- 29:17Turner like everything you could want in a hokey.
- 29:23Yep. So I mean great.
- 29:25Great career here. So shout out to him on playing
- 29:27his last home game as a hokey. Can I say something about that?
- 29:31Yeah, buddy went up with his kids and Trey.
- 29:34Actually during the hook you all came over and gave them all.
- 29:36The five. He's got a picture of it.
- 29:39Just shows you hear me. He is definitely a fans player.
- 29:46Yep. I am favorite like everything.
- 29:52You want to put. Put in that bucket.
- 29:53That's the trade. Turner is.
- 29:55So shout out to Trey. Great.
- 29:57Great job and we've loved watching you play here.
- 30:01Is we have And then, Caleb tell me.
- 30:07You saw the give credits to whoever was the producer for
- 30:11that game yesterday when they showed the Caleb Smith touchdown
- 30:15because they had ran like in the long run game where he was
- 30:18blocking and then he released and he went up field, two plays
- 30:23later, they run the same play, he's blocking to guide.
- 30:25You sheds in like forgets about on the safeties come up and it's
- 30:28the same, we use the scenes again that exists.
- 30:33It exists. Two times now, two times.
- 30:38Wow, yeah. And I, you know, I like the that
- 30:41we had to set up there, I liked it.
- 30:42We were getting inventive with how we were going to get our
- 30:45guys open in the passing game. I just keep going back to.
- 30:51Where the hell is this Ben? All right, don't know why?
- 30:53We're, we're emptying the playbook for Duke brought Brian.
- 30:59Let's do it. Brian has a juxtaposition.
- 31:02Brian. Is a little heated. so go ahead,
- 31:06Brian and it's not just this year things like every year
- 31:10under this coaching staff, well, it seems like every year we have
- 31:17the bad game followed up by something like this, right?
- 31:24We've had, you know, pit and then we follow that up.
- 31:30We've got this game, we follow it up.
- 31:33I mean, I'm just I'm a little confused that we last year.
- 31:38We've had some gains very similar to that the essentially
- 31:41the entire month of November and December.
- 31:43Then we get Eva like Like, why can't we?
- 31:51So essentially win the games that we should win.
- 31:55All the time. Well Brian.
- 31:57Most of the time, right? Go back.
- 31:59Go back to the first year. The lawsuit of Syracuse in the
- 32:03dome. Yeah, not like a one or two
- 32:05point got just got smashed. You know what that you remember?
- 32:09What the next game was? What was that with the Miami
- 32:12game that first year? Miami game, where we absolutely
- 32:16curb stomp them? Yeah, and let's talk about Miami
- 32:19game. That was the game after Duke in
- 32:202019 where we get blown out by Duke and then we go out and
- 32:24shock. Miami.
- 32:26Nobody gave us a chance and that game.
- 32:28No, not at all. Not at all.
- 32:32So it's just one of those weird things where it's like, it's an
- 32:36Mo of this coaching staff, just like, we're going to have a
- 32:40really bad game, like just bad bad in all aspects.
- 32:46Do some really screwed up things.
- 32:47Within the next week we're going to make the fans us included.
- 32:52Right? Where, where, where was this?
- 32:56This year? We get to say, where was this
- 32:57there in multiple games? I just, where was this?
- 33:00Last week even though we get a direct correlation back to last
- 33:04week. So hopefully what's the feel is
- 33:08it's not to more much more of this Braun.
- 33:13Hopefully they can carry the momentum to Miami which is going
- 33:15to be a night game down at Miami 730, kick right. 738 CC Network
- 33:22kick. So good times on that Brian.
- 33:25Let's flip, let's talk about the defense for a few minutes here
- 33:27for we get a few more things, popped up.
- 33:30We About Gunnar Holmberg. Daughter Holmberg ruled out the
- 33:33last second root out, but fully dress.
- 33:36I'm guessing he was there emergency emergency QB,
- 33:39emergency quarterback. If everybody was injured, they
- 33:42will essentially, the guys, they had the two other guys.
- 33:45They had he would have came in essentially good enough to play,
- 33:49but not good enough, where you felt like, he could go a full
- 33:53game of getting pounded on. So, smart - I mean it benefited
- 33:58us. I mean, definitely, they.
- 34:00They took some of their teeth out of the passing game.
- 34:03Yep. But of course, we was two more
- 34:07athletic quarterbacks, right? Whole bars?
- 34:09They're like here. Riley, Leonard's like here and
- 34:12Morgan. Finally King.
- 34:13It's like here. So it was clearly something,
- 34:19where if he was dressed, he just hadn't probably.
- 34:22He probably hadn't done any of the lead-up.
- 34:25It probably just, and more probably had just been Leonard
- 34:29and that's Tire, you know, credit to our credit though,
- 34:34having those guys And we still held them under a hundred yards
- 34:38below their average. Yeah.
- 34:40Well, over a hundred yards below their average.
- 34:43And then on the money Downs, they we show up again.
- 34:46Unlike BC, there's back to the juxtaposition, they were 5 for
- 34:5019, they were Dreadful on third, and fourth downs, and it's why
- 34:56we sort of dominated the game. Yeah, definitely one of our
- 35:00better defensive performances of the year.
- 35:03I put it at least in kind of the top three there.
- 35:07Nothing. Nothing will really match what
- 35:08we did Week, 1 against you and see.
- 35:11We really, really peaked early defensively.
- 35:15And it's been a kind of up and down back half.
- 35:17But this this was one of the the better better games for us.
- 35:22And it started with the guys inside at the the linebacker
- 35:27position Dax hollifield, Alan Tisdale probably the overall
- 35:34best games they've had. You're definitely the best games
- 35:37they've had in the in the month of October and November.
- 35:41Yeah, you know tackling well, they attack has four laws.
- 35:47Have some sacks. Tisdale was in there making some
- 35:52making some noise to acts had some, some key stops on some key
- 35:55Downs. So you love to see that d-line
- 35:59got pressure all day, didn't didn't really get to finish
- 36:02those but they definitely put the quarterbacks and some bad
- 36:05spot. It's some errant throws some
- 36:07throws, you know, released sooner than they were ready
- 36:11off-target things like that. Forced a lot of throws on the
- 36:16run and a lot of throws just getting the rid of the ball
- 36:19because they ran out of time. Oh absolutely.
- 36:21And the other thing both the front half did altogether.
- 36:24Mateo Durant was not a factor of 1,000 yard running back was no
- 36:28Factor. He only had ten carries and one
- 36:35of the other running backs, we did not mention the other week,
- 36:37but Trent Davis was out there more because he's more pass
- 36:40catcher. Yeah, so yeah they really had to
- 36:43I had to go away from their game plan and really with with the
- 36:46quarterbacks they had in there, they would have much preferred
- 36:49to stick with a with a run first offense and we got them out of
- 36:54that real quick. Oh yes we did.
- 36:57But we guess we did now there was one time near the end of the
- 37:01game where they did get home didn't derail Pollard in Taiwan
- 37:06Garbutt. Pollard gets the strip sack and
- 37:10then Garbutt picks it up. Runs it into the end zone.
- 37:13The game was well, in hand at that point, but that was, let's
- 37:15just a great explanation point that they were still playing
- 37:18hard to the end. Yeah.
- 37:20And I like that this was even though it didn't happen in the
- 37:24first half. Like I wanted where we were Meg
- 37:27aggressive in the two-minute drill to from the jump.
- 37:30Instead of, you know, once we got one big play there, I like
- 37:36that in the second half we didn't take our foot off the gas
- 37:39pedal. That's been different than
- 37:42really any other game. I've seen this year, we weren't
- 37:45content with just having a double-digit lead.
- 37:48We weren't just going to sit on that.
- 37:49We were going to keep going. I think it might be the first
- 37:53time all year I have to go back and look but it feels like it's
- 37:56the first time all year second half we scored more points in
- 37:59first half. Yeah, maybe a middle Tennessee.
- 38:03Might have been the only other one where made of Middle
- 38:05Tennessee and that was mainly because the first half was such
- 38:09a downer. Yeah.
- 38:10West Virginia to, but the Western, and I think the point
- 38:15we're trying to make is we had points on the board.
- 38:18We had the game under control instead of playing conservative
- 38:21and kept attacking, kept attacking, kept attacked those
- 38:23other games were either closed or where we were down going into
- 38:26half. Yeah.
- 38:28Whereas in this case, we had a pretty decent Lead, taking it to
- 38:31the half and we said we're not done.
- 38:34All right? Yep.
- 38:35Only ask you one question. More on what Jordan wore did
- 38:39really near the end of the game? I know we were rotating guys in
- 38:42and out does it give you any pause for concern with the Run
- 38:47game of how he looked? And I know the last two guys
- 38:50with Van Dyken potentially burning Armstrong aren't that.
- 38:55But just in general, if we start, if we keep this similar
- 38:58defense going in 2022, I think it'll be okay.
- 39:05I think I think there's some tweaks that still need to
- 39:07happen. I think the overall scheme is
- 39:10still a work in progress. I think we did see we have seen
- 39:12overall progression from year one to year two in this defense.
- 39:19You know the question is going to be is this going to be our
- 39:21defense going into into next year or not?
- 39:25But When we talk about the next two games though.
- 39:31You know, we are looking at guys that can run the football and
- 39:35they both can throw the ball. Assuming both of them are
- 39:38playing in those games and that's going to be the struggle,
- 39:43right? We have struggled with with guys
- 39:46that even weren't the best thrower.
- 39:48If they could run in throw, even if they were get the ball, more
- 39:51down, feel like a Schrader we struggled there.
- 39:54So we'll see how that works out. We know Armstrong is more of a
- 39:59throw first player even though. He is an athlete Van Dyke, a
- 40:04little bit of the same, right. So they're both still throw
- 40:07first where a Schrader was was more of a run-and-gun deep type
- 40:12type quarterback. So we'll see if that plays more
- 40:16into our defense has favored or not.
- 40:18But yeah, it's definitely something to be concerned about
- 40:20but we'll look into it. I'm sure they'll have some new
- 40:23wrinkles and adjustments to counter some of what UVA in
- 40:28Miami do absolutely. Before we get, It into just one
- 40:31more piece. Why they throwing so many flags
- 40:36on Jermaine wall? Or for just playing defense, and
- 40:39why is the Umpire get in the way and then the back judge, don't
- 40:41want to flag on it. Yep.
- 40:45That was the worst because the the Umpire was in the way which
- 40:50made the receiver, stop his route.
- 40:55Instead of diving for the football, he stops his route and
- 40:58that and Waller was already essentially reading the play as
- 41:02if he was going down for the ball and now you got a receiver
- 41:06that's like right up on you. I don't like that.
- 41:12You know, there was three flags on and probably only one was
- 41:15actually legitimately pass interference.
- 41:18What haven't been over hand fighting?
- 41:20And he literally it literally the way it looked.
- 41:22It was like at the last second, his arm was extended right
- 41:26before Bobo's was extended and they throw it.
- 41:28It's just like they're fighting, that's not a flag.
- 41:33Again, we talked about the ACC officials.
- 41:35We know they don't like to throw the flags very much in the pie,
- 41:40but when they do, it's very inconsistent.
- 41:42Austin, I think that's the problem, you know?
- 41:43If if you're not going to throw it be consistent, if you're
- 41:46going to throw it be consistent, I don't care so much one way or
- 41:51the other. I just want you to be consistent
- 41:54that way, you know. Predictable outcomes, right?
- 41:56Yeah. Any shock to you how much he
- 41:59covered by the being 65 220. I mean, he's done.
- 42:04Well, have been against bigger receivers in the past?
- 42:06So I mean, I don't think that was too shocking, he definitely
- 42:11held Bobo. In check.
- 42:15Yeah. In just three catches for a
- 42:18little over 30 yards. Yeah.
- 42:20All those lower output games all year reception and we know we
- 42:24did they didn't have the best best, quarterbacks pulling the
- 42:27trigger there, but at the same time, you know, he held him in
- 42:31check, even when he had time, he was there in coverage, so Shout
- 42:37out to Waller great game. Continuing another great season
- 42:43here for him. Yes, he is.
- 42:45All right, we're on before we take a break and then come back
- 42:49with some stuff you've been digging up.
- 42:51I wanted to kind of go over the defensive rankings because okay,
- 42:56I don't know if everybody looks like it's something I followed,
- 42:58but let's go ahead, scoring. We are 32 in the country were
- 43:02given up 21 game compared to last year, Leaps and Bounds
- 43:08better than we were last year Leaps and Bounds.
- 43:12Not even question, we are a top 15 passing defense but the run
- 43:20defense is still struggling over 103 yards or excuse me, 130
- 43:25You're over 186 yards, the Red Zone D, still struggling at 99
- 43:32but there is something I noticed.
- 43:34And I know you've been talking about this with the new scheme
- 43:36where in how many, how many Red Zone trips?
- 43:41Do you think we've had this year?
- 43:45I'm not safe. You, I'd say significantly fewer
- 43:48than last year. It is.
- 43:50It's only 23. And and the numbers are getting
- 43:55a little bit. Better 17 touchdowns to six
- 43:58field goals, but only 23 trips where, when I was digging
- 44:01through the data, there are teams that are like UVA, has
- 44:05over forty four trips into the Red Zone against them.
- 44:09Over forty four trips and they're giving up like 75% of
- 44:13the time, the score and they're ranked higher than us.
- 44:16But it's also like but you've also let teams get double the
- 44:20times into the 20-yard line that says something because if
- 44:25they're getting down and you're scoring and they're scoring as
- 44:2875% clip and the other we're only we're giving up 80 but
- 44:33you're only getting there two times a game, it helps.
- 44:37Total Defense, 60. Where would you give them a
- 44:40grade right now? Defense in general.
- 44:47I'd say it's somewhere in that b-minus c-plus range.
- 44:51I'd probably go see. Plus, I'd like to see the Red
- 44:54Zone improve in terms of stops and especially forcing the feel.
- 45:00I, we definitely need Force more field goals, you know, you're
- 45:04rarely going to give get a ton of true stops there, but we need
- 45:08to definitely be closer to that, you know, 65 70 percent in terms
- 45:14of force and field goals there. Now when we talk about the
- 45:20running, the rush defense that that's concerning but we have
- 45:25done a good job of stopping the bleeding throughout drives.
- 45:29A lot of the big gains are coming early in the drive and
- 45:34then we're settling in and then getting off the field.
- 45:38You know, the problem is that when they do get in the Red Zone
- 45:41that's when the rush defense should be bowing up a little bit
- 45:44and it hasn't Yeah, so I think I think that's that's more
- 45:48concerning than necessarily. The fact that they're getting a
- 45:52bunch of yards there. And we really only had what like
- 45:57to to bad defense leg bad defensive games.
- 46:04Yeah, Syracuse and Syracuse and Notre Dame with the too bad
- 46:08defensive games. Yeah, Notre Dame, it was really,
- 46:14it was like a it was like the be - game until the end of the game
- 46:20and then it was the f - it went from like Hey we're doing okay,
- 46:24too. What do we just put on the field
- 46:27for two drives at the end of the game?
- 46:29Yeah, so you had you had two bad games.
- 46:31You had to and games like pit pit probably goes in that
- 46:36category you share. I mean pit was scored over 50.
- 46:42We home to 28 it's a a game because the offense just
- 46:45couldn't do anything. I'm talking about the rush
- 46:47defense. Oh yeah, yeah, right Stephen's.
- 46:49I'm sorry, I'm sorry, my bad man.
- 46:51Yeah. Yeah, they shouldn't be able to
- 46:53run the ball like that against us.
- 46:56Got it. Now they held Kenny Pickett as
- 47:00much in. Check is pretty much any defense
- 47:02has this year, but we gave up too many yards in the Run game.
- 47:08Couldn't stop. Couldn't set the edge.
- 47:10Well, outside containing the running game was awful extended
- 47:13drives when it shouldn't have. So that was the problem that
- 47:17game but like I said, I'd probably go see plus B, minus
- 47:21range overall, definitely the strength of the team outside of
- 47:25special teams this year. And we finally had a couple
- 47:30games in here in the last few weeks where, you know, offense
- 47:35and defense showed up a little bit at the same time, especially
- 47:38against Duke. Finally looks like four
- 47:40quarters. Yeah, both sides of the ball
- 47:43doing pretty well. Closed.
- 47:45In the Georgia Tech game about 1/4 was all for the offense at
- 47:48Georgia Tech was that way too. And, you know what?
- 47:51The next two games were going to need it.
- 47:53We're going to need eight quarters of everybody being on
- 47:56the same page. Just Just to get to a bowl game
- 48:00and to get to a bowl game for these kids who did not get one
- 48:03last year as there is some normalcy this year, you're going
- 48:06to probably see bowls or probably going to get to go
- 48:08early. There's gonna be some protocols
- 48:10but you hope we can. I want to pull both out.
- 48:15And then like watch chaos happen and we like make the ACC
- 48:19Championship game and would have to say we go shoot, what do we
- 48:22do? What do we do?
- 48:23What do we do? What do we do?
- 48:24What do we do? What do we do?
- 48:26It'll be in. Yeah, yeah, foresee that
- 48:28happening but yeah, only it could still happen.
- 48:32I definitely want to see us. I definitely want to see us win
- 48:34out here, regardless of what happens on that front because
- 48:39both of these games are rivalry games, both of these games
- 48:42matter on the recruiting Trail. There's there's a lot riding on
- 48:45this. That has nothing to do with,
- 48:47who's the head coach next year, 100%, 100%.
- 48:51All right. Brian, before we get into
- 48:53another topic tonight. We are going to take a quick

- 49:21Dash report. Now back to the episode Alright
- 49:26guys, what we're looking at tonight in kind of a discussion,
- 49:31everybody might McDaniels over at sons of Saturday and hokey
- 49:34hangover podcast. Released a tweet this week,
- 49:38talking about sport Eco in their College Athletic Department
- 49:43financial data base. I thought I picked at it.
- 49:48But the big guy out of here. What are they saying?
- 49:53I went down the rabbit hole for multiple days.
- 49:58Yeah. Brian, I'm going to just assume
- 50:03that you looked a lot of VT. I looked a lot at Virginia Tech.
- 50:08Absolutely that's where I started and then I started
- 50:11looking at other ACC teams and then comp teams and other
- 50:16conferences all right, so I mean are we 1 to 10?
- 50:26Where we bring? Let's do that first one to 10.
- 50:29Are we terrible or we average and we slightly above average or
- 50:34what would you say? So we're kind of in the bottom
- 50:36end and overall Revenue in the ACC that probably shouldn't
- 50:42shouldn't shocky that many people.
- 50:46But when you look, I think it's, when you look at the breakdowns
- 50:50that's where some of the story gets told.
- 50:52So I'm gonna throw something up real.
- 50:53Quick here for the folks watching just to give you an
- 50:57idea of what we're looking at, what I was looking at.
- 51:01And so this is the, can I say one thing down?
- 51:05Yes, he one thing, if you're listening to this on the podcast
- 51:10on on tomorrow Tuesday or Wednesday at about 52 minutes.
- 51:16If you go to our YouTube page, you'll be able to see the
- 51:19documents primers are bringing up.
- 51:21Yep. So What?
- 51:24Right now I'm just we're focusing on revenues here,
- 51:27obviously expenses matter, but I was more curious about money
- 51:32coming in. Then I was about, you know what,
- 51:35it's getting spent on. So like I said, we got, we got
- 51:40the chart here, you know, breaks it down by different buckets of
- 51:44where the revenues coming from. It breaks it down over, on the
- 51:47left hand, side of the chart of you know where What sport or in
- 51:55this, in this case, also nonspecific not sport-specific.
- 51:58So, like just a general scholarship type situation where
- 52:02that money is being spent or where that money's allocated to,
- 52:06in terms of the budget. And there's there's several
- 52:10takeaways here. So I'm going to go ahead and pop
- 52:13this off your and just start talking a little bit more here.
- 52:15So let's start with Virginia Tech's numbers, and I'm going to
- 52:19break this into good bad and ugly.
- 52:22We're going Spaghetti spaghetti western here always.
- 52:28So we'll start with the good. We are better than every other
- 52:35ACC team in terms of media rights.
- 52:39And that's that's based on obviously this is just public
- 52:42schools because it's just public data.
- 52:45So we don't have Wake Forest numbers.
- 52:48We don't have Miami numbers. We don't have pit numbers.
- 52:50We don't have BC numbers, we don't have sit there.
- 52:52There's a, it's not yet. It is not public.
- 52:55Well, I do know. Yep.
- 52:59So no wake, no Duke. So there's a lot of numbers that
- 53:04we don't have probably half the ACC that we don't have, but in
- 53:09terms of the ones we do, we're at the top and meteorites
- 53:12overall. So across all sports, why do you
- 53:17think it is? I mean that that like I think
- 53:20meteorites I think well good Lord, where we're down, tucked
- 53:25in Southwest Virginia where someone like Simpson is notes,
- 53:30north of Greenville, South of Charlotte.
- 53:33You think, you know, UVA Charlottesville is a pretty good
- 53:36metro area only in about, you know, an hour west of Richmond.
- 53:41Why do you think we're one of the better media deals?
- 53:45Yeah, I'm not sure. I don't know if that has
- 53:46something to do with the ACC Network having a studio in lane
- 53:51or any other factor, that that's related to that.
- 53:54But we do better than every other school.
- 53:58In the ACC public wise in terms of those meteorites.
- 54:03And that's taking into account that the ACC media deal is
- 54:07absolutely the worst. In all the power 5, even Pac-12
- 54:12is your average school has a little is generating more
- 54:15revenue and meteorites than your average ACC schools.
- 54:19So if we can get that worked out, that bucket is going to go
- 54:23up across the board. So it'll go for Virginia Tech as
- 54:26well. And you know, it starts with
- 54:29getting Comcast on board, with the ACC Network, it starts with
- 54:32better deal in terms of the actual Financial figures per
- 54:38School in the deal overall. So that's the good, the bad, the
- 54:47bad while, not the bottom of the conference, in terms of
- 54:51donations, we are behind key competitors.
- 54:56We are behind UVA. Clemson FSU Louisville.
- 55:00And we're pretty much squared up with UNC and that's again,
- 55:03that's donations across all sports.
- 55:07So we're not just looking at football, we're looking at
- 55:09across all sports. We're a shade better in
- 55:12football, then then we are in overall, but it's not, it's
- 55:18negligible this. Now let's say that this is 1920,
- 55:22right? This is 1920.
- 55:24Yes, they don't have the the fiscal information for the last
- 55:28Last calendar year. Yeah, we're getting scooped onto
- 55:30gifted. Yeah, yeah.
- 55:34Well so and I know donations have been trending up.
- 55:38So we might be, we may be firmly ahead of UNC, although UNC has
- 55:43been on a big donation, push as well so they may have matched us
- 55:47there with some of the things Mac has been doing.
- 55:50Even though it hasn't translated to wins like they like on the
- 55:53field, but they have been making a big push in recruiting and
- 55:57that tends to help. With donations and things like
- 55:59that. So more than likely, we're
- 56:02probably pretty, pretty squared up with you and see still, but
- 56:06having UVA and obviously Louisville most of thats
- 56:10basketball. Yeah, they're not doing a whole
- 56:14lot on the football front, that that's the team that we just we
- 56:17jump UVA, and, and Louisville. When you just look at football
- 56:22donations, okay, but overall, we're lagging behind where
- 56:29Almost 10 million behind Louisville, in overall donations
- 56:32and eight million behind. Sorry, seven million behind UVA
- 56:36and overall donations. But the whole thing about
- 56:39thinking over all donations Brian, isn't it?
- 56:42If their overall donating more money to whatever sport Football
- 56:46is the biggest pie. So if there's some booster and
- 56:50UVA getting two million to the basketball program, the two
- 56:54million that might come out of the big media rights deal for
- 56:57football. We don't have to pay that over
- 57:00there boosters taken care of it with the big donation, right?
- 57:04Yeah. And when we looked at the chart
- 57:06earlier, I've been the majority of our donations or non
- 57:09sport-specific so that's getting divvied up on some degree of
- 57:13percentage rate and that's driving me five that's the drive
- 57:17for 45 campaign. Yeah.
- 57:19And Clemson had a very similar thing where they weren't
- 57:21crushing Us in football donations.
- 57:23But if Tey it, we're going to get to that in a second is like
- 57:27out of the fucking ball park. So now let's get to the ugly.
- 57:34This is the one that I again I need to look into more of where
- 57:40Where this is going and what we're doing.
- 57:44But Licensing and ads. We are behind pretty much
- 57:51everyone in the ACC and the rest of power 5.
- 57:55We are ungodly low in this bucket.
- 57:58Like we're just over two million, most of the rest of the
- 58:02ACC is eight million and up. So I'm not sure.
- 58:07Yeah, I'm not sure what we are not doing or doing wrong in
- 58:13this, this sector. But that that is the biggest
- 58:18area that we are lagging behind. Even the bottom feeders in the
- 58:24ACC in terms of Revenue? Well, that mean to me, I would
- 58:30say here that my first thought is what we're in, Southwest
- 58:34Virginia. The biggest Metro city is
- 58:38rolling up, north the other big metros that we have so much.
- 58:44Relationship with our hours upon hours away.
- 58:48Yeah. And there's also, there's also
- 58:51other institutions that Our kind of home basis for for those
- 58:57schools as well. Right?
- 58:59Well, it's true. Car loan going off.
- 59:04One moment. Not my car alarm.
- 59:10There we go. Probably somebody sitting on a
- 59:14key in their living rooms Show. Ladies and Gentlemen, live show
- 59:17what happens on but I think we're it may show a real concern
- 59:24is DC is one of the biggest alumni markets.
- 59:31Yep. There's opportunity there
- 59:33Charlotte Atlanta Richmond, the 75 and the beach Area.
- 59:39Raleigh Winston-Salem you have these Pockets where there are a
- 59:43ton of alumni? Why aren't we attempting to get
- 59:49some licensing and ads in those areas?
- 59:52Where there's something there to sell.
- 59:54Yeah, I don't know if this is just the Classic VT running, the
- 59:58mom and pop organization on the financial side.
- 1:00:00In some cases where, you know, we become mature in some areas
- 1:00:05of that and then others still seem like they're stuck in, you
- 1:00:10know, the late 90s in terms of how they go about the business.
- 1:00:14So I don't know if it's more of a combination of that or what
- 1:00:18but that is that's where we are giving up the most ground to
- 1:00:21everyone else in our Yeah, and because this looks not enough,
- 1:00:26is it? It's not enough for the
- 1:00:28meteorites to compensate know, so, just because we're tops in
- 1:00:32meteorites, that's not compensating for that drop off
- 1:00:37and then, you know, donations are only, you know, like we
- 1:00:41said, middle-of-the-road overall.
- 1:00:44So they're not bad, they're not hurting us, but they're not
- 1:00:47acting as a benefit and when you talk about not just in the
- 1:00:51conference but when you Look at all of power 5, you know, when
- 1:00:56you're competing against those schools, especially ones that
- 1:00:59have those better media deals donations become a bigger role
- 1:01:03because they are something that if you get the right motivation,
- 1:01:08is easier to start stacking in the bucket, right?
- 1:01:13So, that's where we talked about donations and saying donations,
- 1:01:16e to improve. Yeah, that's the easiest to
- 1:01:18improve. So that's why it's pushed.
- 1:01:23But so one of the thing I did was look at some other schools
- 1:01:28that we compare against and the one I kept landing on based in
- 1:01:32this was mostly based on kind of historical, at least recent
- 1:01:35history of the success of the programs and the overall alumni
- 1:01:40base, they're very similar. So that's Michigan State
- 1:01:43University. And in terms of donations,
- 1:01:48pretty much right on the same ballpark as Virginia Tech in
- 1:01:51terms of the the The revenue in the 1920 year for donations
- 1:01:57right at the 21 and a half million range, okay.
- 1:02:01But, but they are kicking our butts in the in the one area we
- 1:02:07suffer in and actually in also in the area that we are best in.
- 1:02:11So this this shows you how much better the Big Ten deal is than
- 1:02:18the ACC meteorites for Michigan State University.
- 1:02:23Are 16 million higher. So they are in the 44 million
- 1:02:27and change range. Good gracious.
- 1:02:31Yeah. Then you've got licensing ads.
- 1:02:35They are 16 and a half million so they are 14 million higher
- 1:02:41than Virginia Tech in that one. Budgetary bucket.
- 1:02:49And those are the two buckets where if you sum up, is actually
- 1:02:53making up the difference between our overall revenues because the
- 1:02:57overall Revenue difference is just over 30 million Virginia
- 1:03:00Tech just under 100 million in Michigan State, just over 130
- 1:03:06million. So those two areas the
- 1:03:08meteorites in the licensing and ads are where the big
- 1:03:11differences. Well, you're saying 30 overall
- 1:03:15and I'm just pulling this up here, Brian.
- 1:03:17Now, if you want to pull it up on the screen, Their total
- 1:03:21revenues 130 million, that's it saying, because if you think
- 1:03:27about where he and I'm, and I'm going back and I'm, as you were
- 1:03:31saying all this, I'm pulling up a map here about where East
- 1:03:35Lansing Michigan is East Lansing.
- 1:03:37Michigan is about two hours West of Detroit.
- 1:03:40They're not Ann Arbor is literally 45 minutes outside.
- 1:03:45We're Michigan is so that license in hand Revenue?
- 1:03:50Says a lot to me because I don't know.
- 1:03:54They're not in a super rural Grand Rapids has a couple hours
- 1:03:57West they are there more in a I don't know what you'd call it
- 1:04:03may be greater metro area where you're going to hit CDs here and
- 1:04:08there. But to have that sort of like,
- 1:04:11as in an ads, concerns me, can you pull up and tell me just
- 1:04:17what the license and and football are Because I want to
- 1:04:20see the difference there because I mean, obviously, Michigan.
- 1:04:23State has is a Michigan State. Basketball has been on the map
- 1:04:26for 25 years. What's the difference in
- 1:04:29licensing? Ad for football compared to So
- 1:04:35for Virginia Tech. Yeah.
- 1:04:39Alright, let's let's take a look here.
- 1:04:45So, football is essentially a little over half of that total,
- 1:04:53most of it. Most of the rest goes into non
- 1:04:56sport-specific, so I'm guessing just general licensing of
- 1:05:01apparel and things like that. Okay, so you like the other
- 1:05:06sport specific. So like, if you would go out
- 1:05:09there and harshly, push the 1999 jerseys or some of the Pro
- 1:05:14Combat Uniforms from, Mid 2000's or the early 2010's.
- 1:05:21So, in Michigan state has a very classic uniform, right?
- 1:05:24You don't see them, go crazy all of a sudden.
- 1:05:27Yeah, but they come sit here. Thinking are we missing the
- 1:05:30opportunities there? Where they're not.
- 1:05:35It's possible. I I don't again they they don't
- 1:05:37separate this out ads versus licensing so I'm not sure what
- 1:05:42what Michigan state is doing. Well that we're not doing I just
- 1:05:46know that we're not doing doing this to any degree that any
- 1:05:49other power 5 school is. So I don't think just geographic
- 1:05:53region has anything to do with the hindrance there because
- 1:05:58there are other schools that have a similar.
- 1:06:03You know, Geographic footprint that are doing much better.
- 1:06:09Yeah. And I like the way Braun because
- 1:06:11I can see the next two bronze. I'm talking about here.
- 1:06:13I like the way you pulled one out of another conference
- 1:06:16because when we think Michigan State football, we are kind of
- 1:06:20on equals with them 20 years ago.
- 1:06:22We were well ahead of them. 15 years ago, we were home in years
- 1:06:25ago. We were well ahead of them.
- 1:06:27Five years ago is when you know they made the playoffs, they've
- 1:06:30been more of a power than what we've been.
- 1:06:34And I also think if you know, you think about Michigan State
- 1:06:38University, you know land-grant school right down at about the
- 1:06:44same time back in the 1870s. So age-wise, same age, same type
- 1:06:52donor base, so, you know and like I said, overall alumni base
- 1:06:55is about the same. They're a little A bit heavier
- 1:06:57and donations or like I said a pretty much flat.
- 1:07:00I think actually Virginia Tech has a small overall advantage in
- 1:07:04donations, compared to Michigan State.
- 1:07:07But again, they're making up for that in those meteorites and
- 1:07:10Licensing and ads and then some, but let's go ahead and turn back
- 1:07:15to the ACC. And we're going to look at the
- 1:07:17obvious. One here, Clemson and right off
- 1:07:21the bat, this one shot me. I know what shocked you when I
- 1:07:23put it on the, on the screen there yet.
- 1:07:27Ginny attack. + 10 million on Clemson in meteorites.
- 1:07:32Well, I can't explain that one. They're close to made Metro
- 1:07:37areas there a Big Brand right now.
- 1:07:41They're a Big Brand where you think they could be selling
- 1:07:44things in these meteorites for so many different other
- 1:07:49opportunity. Good Lord, a Disney movie made,
- 1:07:51ya know that get some distance and again this is 1920 so that
- 1:07:57would probably be in either. Last year's numbers are going
- 1:08:00into next year's numbers but in general.
- 1:08:04Yeah in general you would think Clemson has has been in a
- 1:08:09situation where there meteorites would be at least Least in the
- 1:08:12ballpark of Virginia Tech, right?
- 1:08:14But they're not now football those numbers are pretty even
- 1:08:19and actually Virginia Tech still has a small Advantage there but
- 1:08:22but more or less. They're even there.
- 1:08:23They're losing the ground in the other sorts.
- 1:08:26Well, which kind of makes sense. Yeah, we've all heard about the
- 1:08:30donations in that campaign. How much is that plus minus or
- 1:08:33Plus? All right.
- 1:08:34So the difference between Clemson and really any other
- 1:08:39school is that they make up for it in two areas and the biggest
- 1:08:43one is donations where they double us up.
- 1:08:49So how much is a number? They are at 44 million in
- 1:08:55donations that in most of that is the non sport-specific.
- 1:09:02Ipped a fundraising drive that they have ran up to great
- 1:09:08success. And like I said, doubling up,
- 1:09:14Virginia Tech in that bucket is significant, but they're also
- 1:09:17plus 10 million in licensing and ads.
- 1:09:20So they're at that kind of 12 and a half million range.
- 1:09:23They also do something that not every public ACC institution
- 1:09:27does and they actually have a significant direct institutional
- 1:09:31support where they give five million directly to their
- 1:09:37athletic department in direct institutional support, whereas
- 1:09:41Virginia Tech It is in the like bear, like 2,000.
- 1:09:46It's a very small figure wasn't the president of that school.
- 1:09:50Made the decision back a few years ago that they were going
- 1:09:57to go all in. It's out like by giving five to
- 1:10:01six million dollars. It helps, right.
- 1:10:05Yeah. The only other school that gives
- 1:10:07direct more as FSU in terms of the publicly available
- 1:10:10information. Okay, not helping them a lot
- 1:10:13now, but still it's a good. But notes here here's the ones
- 1:10:17that Here's the one I want to talk about, let's I want to look
- 1:10:22at the donations, the direct institutional support.
- 1:10:26You got to have a president that will in the write.
- 1:10:27Those checks, out of the out of certain funds, to say here's 10
- 1:10:34million, the life incentive that things, you know, makes sense,
- 1:10:42right? Last ten years, they won
- 1:10:45multiple national titles, tons of NFL players, then you can go
- 1:10:50actually go. But here's the thing.
- 1:10:52The brand is out there. Yes, yes.
- 1:10:55The brand somewhat cells Excel itself.
- 1:10:58Yeah, here's the thing where I think Virginia Tech has to
- 1:11:02figure out what it's doing wrong.
- 1:11:05You know, the difference between the amount of living alumni for
- 1:11:07both schools, it's pretty significant.
- 1:11:11It is Clemson's. And about 150,000 Virginia
- 1:11:14Tech's, it almost 240,000 and is on the little that is ninety
- 1:11:19thousand more give or take alumni.
- 1:11:23Now a thousand more people, you can attempt to reach out to to
- 1:11:26get funding from. And again why did they start to
- 1:11:29drive for 25 this because if you can get just do the math for on
- 1:11:34if every single Virginia Tech Alumni.
- 1:11:38Actually, you know what? Let's go 80%.
- 1:11:41Yep. You know, go 80% and say if a
- 1:11:46You know, 175,000 simply gave $25 a year.
- 1:11:53Minimum, it's like a four million dollar thing.
- 1:11:58That's not counting. Your big donors is not counting
- 1:12:00people. Giving more now on, that's 25 a
- 1:12:03year. Now, if you said they're going
- 1:12:05to do a 25 every month, I mean roof through the roof.
- 1:12:12Um, you essentially at like, 150 175 thousand 170,000 people
- 1:12:19you're looking at like 50 million It's three hundred
- 1:12:22dollars a year. And you don't know everybody
- 1:12:26situation but if to push the donation thing, the 25 was kind
- 1:12:32of an ingenious move to me. You get people gone and they
- 1:12:35give 25. And then you say, you know, can
- 1:12:40you give 25 every month? A lot of people will say, yeah,
- 1:12:44right. Yeah, almost.
- 1:12:47I mean, I don't think there's anyone that can say, unless they
- 1:12:51are just so fed up with the direction of a program or the
- 1:12:55athletic department, as a whole, that they wouldn't give $25 a
- 1:12:58year. Yep.
- 1:12:59I mean and then once you get $25 a year, all right, well now 50
- 1:13:06do too much even if you don't do that, you get 25 every time,
- 1:13:10there's a seasonal fundraising event.
- 1:13:14Yep. You know, you get the, the ones
- 1:13:16that kind of come either, whether it's giving day, whether
- 1:13:18it's, you know, the stuff during the season.
- 1:13:21Whether it's a specific campaign within basketball season or
- 1:13:25football season, you get like five or six of those,
- 1:13:28opportunities in a given calendar year for fiscal year, I
- 1:13:32should say and, you know, now they start giving 25 every time
- 1:13:37they're, you know, now that starting to build so, It's a
- 1:13:44good campaign. I'm hoping that we started
- 1:13:47seeing more and more participation because I think
- 1:13:51the problem now isn't isn't the dollars.
- 1:13:53It's the, it's the participation.
- 1:13:55If we can get participation to be a little bit closer to the
- 1:13:58goal. Yeah, then I think you'll start
- 1:14:01seeing, you know, and I'm not saying we're going to get to
- 1:14:03Clemson numbers, but I think we can match.
- 1:14:05UVA numbers. We just we're about to talk
- 1:14:07about now. What's good?
- 1:14:09So we found from the UVA crowd. Yeah, so The Big Chill again.
- 1:14:15Let's talk about is similar to its not to the degree of
- 1:14:19Clemson, but it's very much in the same.
- 1:14:22Same vein. We are behind six and a half
- 1:14:26million in donations to UVA there in the the 27 and change
- 1:14:32million category there so we're giving up some ground to UVA
- 1:14:38there. A lot of that isn't football,
- 1:14:39some of that is basketball. Some of that is just general
- 1:14:42donations. But it's still something we're
- 1:14:46lagging behind a department that we consider ourselves to be
- 1:14:51better, then especially in football and more recently
- 1:14:57catching them in overall athletic prowess.
- 1:15:03So let's talk about the other piece of it.
- 1:15:05So we've talked about lagging behind license tags, add that's
- 1:15:07been across the board. We're behind eight million.
- 1:15:12Compared to UVA placing ads. What exactly are they publishing
- 1:15:17out there? That people are?
- 1:15:21You know I'm guessing it's going to be the basketball stuff.
- 1:15:24That's the only thing I can think of.
- 1:15:30I can't imagine anything else and I guess maybe.
- 1:15:36I mean, they have a lot of sports that they play at a high
- 1:15:38level, right. Route.
- 1:15:40So so yeah. They have a strong top to bottom
- 1:15:44athletic department even though their football has legs
- 1:15:47significantly behind overall, 15 years.
- 1:15:51Yeah, TV years. Yeah.
- 1:15:53So, I still don't get why we're struggling, like I would, I
- 1:16:00don't have a problem that we're behind in it.
- 1:16:03I have a problem. How far we were behind it.
- 1:16:05Yeah, yeah. Excellent.
- 1:16:07Well for them, for UVA as far as don't know, Nations, never upset
- 1:16:11me because there's always been stories.
- 1:16:13They've had three or four and large donors that love the
- 1:16:16athletic that they're not stroking 1 million dollar checks
- 1:16:19their stroking, 10 million dollar checks and of guys
- 1:16:23stroking that every year because he's got the excess cash.
- 1:16:26Josh. That's tough to catch up.
- 1:16:28Clemson, did it the other way? Clemson went volume.
- 1:16:31We're going to get as many people involved in as much money
- 1:16:33along big donors. Again the license in an ad I
- 1:16:38just don't get it. Do you talk about the basketball
- 1:16:40program? You know, it seems to me and you
- 1:16:45said it before and we've heard it before.
- 1:16:49It is the Mom and Pops organization, that's running the
- 1:16:52donations, and that's running things like that.
- 1:16:56It's not the donations. The like, you can't do that.
- 1:17:00Pull up, pull up. Pull up the screen, one more
- 1:17:02time run. Just just just so everybody can
- 1:17:05realize this Scroll down just a little bit so we can see total
- 1:17:11revenues no no revenues uh my bad.
- 1:17:16We're a hundred million dollar athletic.
- 1:17:18We are 100 million dollar business.
- 1:17:22A hundred million dollars. I'm in the insurance business.
- 1:17:27I see many businesses every day that do not have that sort of
- 1:17:30gross income. So what this tells me is,
- 1:17:38They've got to spend more money on operations, more people,
- 1:17:41updating it you said it earlier on, it's not the 1990 still you
- 1:17:46cannot recruit and we've had several conversations on this,
- 1:17:50you know, on this podcast before about it.
- 1:17:54Yeah. And I don't think what we're
- 1:17:55saying I'm not I'm not saying I know Curtis isn't saying that
- 1:17:58either. We're not saying if financials
- 1:18:01improved so we'll product It's a piece of the pie, it's not the
- 1:18:05whole puzzle. No, it's not.
- 1:18:06There's a lot of things that have to improve recruiting
- 1:18:09overall, not just the investment in recruiting, but you got to
- 1:18:12get better at recruiting and closing.
- 1:18:14Yep. You got to get better on in-game
- 1:18:18adjustments, you. I mean, there's there's a lot of
- 1:18:20things that are related to the coaching staff directly that
- 1:18:24still need to be fixed, but if you want to set up anyone for
- 1:18:28Success, finances have to get better.
- 1:18:31And you know what we talked about It last week to Brian,
- 1:18:35give wit credit where we are financially from where when he
- 1:18:39came in after Jim Weaver, we're well ahead.
- 1:18:42We talked about it last week. Remember, and you sit and you
- 1:18:46said specifically and this was before this reporting came out,
- 1:18:49we're better financially than what we were six years or seven
- 1:18:53years ago and that's big. We can be better though and I
- 1:18:58think now that, you know, obviously the next tires Big and
- 1:19:03football for with very big and when he's going through that
- 1:19:10interview, I think, if you have someone from the marketing
- 1:19:13department, talking to him, right?
- 1:19:15Like listen let you know, we want a great football coach.
- 1:19:17We want a guy who's can get can motivate the kids can recruit.
- 1:19:21But we also want somebody out there that can sell the program,
- 1:19:26they can sell the program, sell the program, get the donors,
- 1:19:30make the donors, happy and some of that's, you know, or feel
- 1:19:33proud. Well, the dogs, but some of that
- 1:19:35is talking to the donors conversations with the donors
- 1:19:38access. Like, there's so many things
- 1:19:40that this this regime has not done well that effect held
- 1:19:45owners are willing to hand over their funds.
- 1:19:50But after seeing this tonight to Brian the licensing and adds,
- 1:19:54yeah, if you have something that's something that doesn't
- 1:19:56really. That's an internal thing.
- 1:19:59It's an internal thing, but if you have a more, if you Mike
- 1:20:03young right now. Tell me that there's virtually
- 1:20:09not going to be someone that loves hockey basketball enough
- 1:20:13that has some big company that is going to be willing to stroke
- 1:20:17a big check to say. I want to sponsor this I want
- 1:20:23Virginia Tech stuff on my merchandise.
- 1:20:26Yeah you got to have that sort of personality Who can go out
- 1:20:32and sell the program and then convince well, I'm going to buy
- 1:20:36some ads. Yeah, I want to do this.
- 1:20:38I want to put your logo on the side of my.
- 1:20:41I've got my company Polo and I want your logo over here.
- 1:20:46So, how much do I haven't do? We talk about it.
- 1:20:48Amazon deals sponsoring football.
- 1:20:52I mean we've got a relationship with Amazon in place.
- 1:20:56Now let's go ahead and give us 100 million.
- 1:21:00Yeah, I think I think the problem is that with football.
- 1:21:04They limit the small sponsorships, but they are very
- 1:21:08stuck in these. We have these relationships that
- 1:21:12we've had for four years and we're sticking with them.
- 1:21:16We're not looking for new like it's very much a we have what we
- 1:21:21have and We're happy with it so we're not, we're not touching
- 1:21:25it, the brand is bigger, go after something else.
- 1:21:29I'm going to give you massive Kudos, great research job on
- 1:21:33this. Hoping opening people's eyes.
- 1:21:35Go to sport Eco. Go to the SEC and look what a
- 1:21:39program. Like, Arkansas are your sales
- 1:21:41like 137 million dollars Revenue a year.
- 1:21:45And I know a lot of that's from meteorites, but they've got a
- 1:21:47lot of other stuff going on, too.
- 1:21:49All right, Brian, let's talk about Saturday, picking for we
- 1:21:52close it up tonight on Rhine rough week.
- 1:21:57Yeah, it was bad. It was bad.
- 1:22:00Brian went 3 and 7 got pit. Got BC.
- 1:22:08Got it. NC State do not get into the
- 1:22:14state. My bad.
- 1:22:18Hold on here, I got pit I got See, who did I get BC in
- 1:22:29Michigan? Michigan.
- 1:22:31Yep, that was the other one. All right, so I'm like, don't
- 1:22:34Brown 13 and 759 and fifty two. And one.
- 1:22:41I went everywhere. We differed you were right.
- 1:22:46Three. Yeah, the Notre Dame, UVA game.
- 1:22:48Brian was expecting Armstrong to play, he didn't I went five and
- 1:22:55five. So up to change some stuff up
- 1:22:57here. I miss the look.
- 1:22:59I thought I took weight but I didn't coin flip situation for
- 1:23:03me this week and you know we you feel like in this we got like
- 1:23:08Miami had it covered. Gave up a fourth and 14 and then
- 1:23:13the touchdown to lose the game. MC State lost what?
- 1:23:17By 3 you have to and you lose about three, it's gut-wrenching,
- 1:23:25the Baylor, Oklahoma game. I went Baylor, I don't know why,
- 1:23:32I guess I just thought home field but you know one of those
- 1:23:37weekend's, the one that I think shocked me and you more than
- 1:23:40anything. Pitt Bean UNC by touchdown.
- 1:23:46Pitt had a really off night. But cuse, Louisville.
- 1:23:54Yeah. Did anybody see that coming?
- 1:23:57Nah Louisville. Jumped on their ass early too.
- 1:24:01They did and it wasn't like turnovers or anything like that.
- 1:24:04Because I was when I open that the game, the stats Central for
- 1:24:09that I would expect to see I Schrader probably threw three
- 1:24:12picks or they fumble or return. Yeah, so no baby a pig six.
- 1:24:16Maybe a scoop and score it. Some bad Plumbing.
- 1:24:20Yeah. They had bad plumbing.
- 1:24:22And that was it. So I don't know Tennessee hung
- 1:24:28in there with Georgia for a while but I was talked.
- 1:24:31With my father-in-law really today and is some about Georgia.
- 1:24:37It was ten nothing earlier, right?
- 1:24:39We're ten Seven, Ten seven early.
- 1:24:41Yeah. How quick to Kirby Smart adjust.
- 1:24:46Second quarter, He adjusted put Tennessee was in Tennessee.
- 1:24:49Couldn't readjust second quarter heat, adjust it.
- 1:24:51And by the second half, it was locked down over and it's crazy
- 1:24:56because what I was talking about with him was when you have that
- 1:24:59many much talent on the field, you can adjust that quick.
- 1:25:04Most teams just like, we have to get to have time to figure this
- 1:25:08out. We can't adjust on the fly like
- 1:25:11this, because most, they adjusted they adjusted on the
- 1:25:14fly to stop any bleeding. Eating and then they made
- 1:25:17full-on adjustments that lock them.
- 1:25:18The hell down at halftime. It was crazy to see that go on.
- 1:25:28I'm not jealous here. Brian anything breaking?
- 1:25:31I haven't seen anything. Come across buddy, right?
- 1:25:34I am updating. I'm adding 1 to my loss column
- 1:25:38and Take it away one. So I am 64 and 44 now, just so
- 1:25:48you got. So, I got some ground to make up
- 1:25:49next week. He's got ground bronze.
- 1:25:53Going to have to just go opposite view every time I got
- 1:25:56to go at least war against you every week from here, on out.
- 1:25:59If I'm going to make up some ground, nothing for against us,
- 1:26:02for two weeks, then you have to choose every championship game
- 1:26:07against me, that's going to be fun.
- 1:26:10And then bowl games. It can happen.
- 1:26:13Olga, it can't happen. It is possible.
- 1:26:16All right. Well, if nothing has happened,
