- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaching Show. Mike
- 0:03Speaker 1: chris Pino, joined by Tom Moore, longtime assistant and longtime
- 0:06Speaker 1: head coach as well for a decade at Quinnipiac. Tom,
- 0:10Speaker 1: I just remember getting off the plane last April, seeing
- 0:15Speaker 1: you walking off with a huge smile as you kind
- 0:19Speaker 1: of won another championship back to back. You've been part
- 0:22Speaker 1: of a bunch of them. I don't know, is anyone
- 0:26Speaker 1: better than another or is it just that euphoric feeling
- 0:30Speaker 1: that you just can't get enough of.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Well, I can tell you this last one was the
- 0:36Speaker 2: most dominant by far. I've never been around a team
- 0:41Speaker 2: that was playing more complete basketball at both ends at
- 0:44Speaker 2: the court than we were, not only in the NCAA tournament.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I think by like the second or third week of January,
- 0:52Speaker 2: it felt to me like once Donovich sort of shook
- 0:56Speaker 2: the rust of that second injury and f like had
- 1:01Speaker 2: his sea legs under him, we were so we were
- 1:05Speaker 2: just so complete at both ends, such a high level team,
- 1:11Speaker 2: the ninety nine team, obviously, it's it's always that that
- 1:14Speaker 2: first one is always special, especially because it came against
- 1:17Speaker 2: Duke and we were such a big underduck, but no,
- 1:21Speaker 2: just great memories obviously.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, the ninety nine team, You're right, the first one
- 1:29Speaker 1: is something you can't forget. But as you were coaching,
- 1:33Speaker 1: let's go Big East first, because you've been in a
- 1:36Speaker 1: million of those tournaments. This team last year in a
- 1:40Speaker 1: Big East tournament and that's a hard tournament to win.
- 1:42Speaker 1: We all know that. Just getting that one I thought
- 1:46Speaker 1: was a great accomplishment for Yukon.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Again, I thought we were really really on top
- 1:53Speaker 2: of things in the Xavier game. You know, it was
- 1:56Speaker 2: a really again like a dominant performance on both ends
- 2:00Speaker 2: ends just like we were really sharp, especially that second half.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And you know, but to play Saint John's in a
- 2:10Speaker 2: in a really sort of tough game in the in
- 2:13Speaker 2: the semifinals was you know, difficult obviously. You know, Coach
- 2:19Speaker 2: Patino is an incredible coach, does a great job changing
- 2:22Speaker 2: defenses and just sort of keeping you off off stride offensively,
- 2:27Speaker 2: giving you different looks. And you know, if you think
- 2:30Speaker 2: back in the Big East, the three games we had
- 2:34Speaker 2: with them last year, we're probably our most challenging I
- 2:38Speaker 2: think because of the different the different pace defensively that
- 2:41Speaker 2: they give you and the different looks and how many
- 2:44Speaker 2: changes they make, So you know, that was hard and
- 2:48Speaker 2: Marquette was obviously a great game. They It was a
- 2:53Speaker 2: lot of emotion in heading into that game. It was
- 2:56Speaker 2: something that meant a lot to us as a program,
- 2:59Speaker 2: have and lost to them last year the year before
- 3:02Speaker 2: in the championship, so it was it was something that
- 3:05Speaker 2: we we definitely h were up for, excited about, and
- 3:12Speaker 2: they were terrific obviously too as well. I mean, I
- 3:14Speaker 2: think that's as good as we felt going into that game,
- 3:17Speaker 2: that it was sort of a Final Four type of
- 3:19Speaker 2: quality opponent and that type of game, and in that
- 3:23Speaker 2: atmosphere too as well, Mic and Bob. As you guys
- 3:27Speaker 2: know from being there a lot, it was a special
- 3:29Speaker 2: night and you know, our guys true to form, they
- 3:32Speaker 2: really rose to the occasion.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah, that's same one before we leave the Big East
- 3:36Speaker 1: and move into this year's team, that Saint John's game.
- 3:39Speaker 1: You know they played it went into the nineties. I mean,
- 3:41Speaker 1: that was a high scoring affair and sometimes a team
- 3:45Speaker 1: can get you playing their game at their pace and
- 3:48Speaker 1: and it gets you off your game. But you con
- 3:50Speaker 1: matched them and one in the nineties, which that was
- 3:53Speaker 1: impressive to me.
- 3:55Speaker 2: That's one of the things I think that's been so
- 3:58Speaker 2: impressive about the wrong in the last couple of years
- 4:01Speaker 2: with coach Hurley is he can do a great job
- 4:05Speaker 2: in any type of any type of game, you know,
- 4:08Speaker 2: Like he can he can coach us through a sort
- 4:11Speaker 2: of a slug fest and a low scoring game, and
- 4:14Speaker 2: he can coach us through a high scoring, up tempo
- 4:16Speaker 2: pace game, makes great adjustments, calls, great calls, great plays,
- 4:22Speaker 2: and and uh you know, I think again we had
- 4:26Speaker 2: that versatility. You know, I think we were one of
- 4:30Speaker 2: those teams that was very difficult to play against at
- 4:33Speaker 2: any any pace, and it was almost like a pick
- 4:36Speaker 2: your poison type of thing with last year's group.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, this year's team. Let's talk young guys.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Okay a Maud Noel, Isaiah Abraham. Were you involved in
- 4:46Speaker 1: recruiting either both of those guys and what have you
- 4:49Speaker 1: seen so far as they've been on campus.
- 4:51Speaker 2: No, I was not. Kamani recruited a mod and uh
- 4:54Speaker 2: Luke recruited Isaiah. But both of those guys great toughness,
- 4:59Speaker 2: really great toughness, and they're they're both about it, you know.
- 5:02Speaker 2: They they come in to practice every day with a
- 5:06Speaker 2: with the readiness to go there. They're mature beyond their
- 5:11Speaker 2: years in terms of their competitive spirit. You know, they
- 5:13Speaker 2: both came from really high level high school programs at
- 5:18Speaker 2: Paul the six and MOTEP and they came from high
- 5:21Speaker 2: level AAU programs. They've been in a ton of big games,
- 5:25Speaker 2: so there was not any kind of back down with
- 5:28Speaker 2: those guys. Really really, uh, they're adjusting well to the
- 5:33Speaker 2: and and there are two kids that can adjust to
- 5:35Speaker 2: the physicality of this level. You know a lot of
- 5:38Speaker 2: young kids when they come in don't quite have the
- 5:42Speaker 2: strength to you know, win screens or uh compete up
- 5:47Speaker 2: for loose balls or hold a box out or get
- 5:50Speaker 2: a catch in a scoring area on offense. Both of
- 5:52Speaker 2: those kids are more than ready physically and toughness wise
- 5:56Speaker 2: to compete at this level. And we're excited about both
- 6:00Speaker 2: of their futures. They're going to be key parts of
- 6:03Speaker 2: what happened here over the next couple of years.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that's where the Star's got to be physically up
- 6:07Speaker 1: to it and then mentally be able to deal with
- 6:10Speaker 1: everything that comes with playing in the Big East and
- 6:12Speaker 1: with the Yukon well. With Tom Moore, the Yukon assistant
- 6:15Speaker 1: back with more on the Yukon men's basketball coaches show
- 6:19Speaker 1: here on liar field
