Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06movie talk show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it at length.
- 0:20This week we've got Coming off of my Shelf 1993's Dave an owed
- 0:27to a Co host, right, We've Got It here, directed by Ivan
- 0:32Reitman, written by Gary Ross, starring Kevin Kline, Sigourney
- 0:36Weaver and a cast of a lot of names that turned out to be
- 0:39names that would not be names. Yet.
- 0:42At this juncture in 1993, David, welcome back to the couch.
- 0:47How are you doing this week? I'm pretty good fantastic.
- 0:50And what are your initial thoughts on the movie and have
- 0:52you a history with? It valid questions, Phillip, if
- 0:56you had told me Bill Pullman was in this movie.
- 0:58Jesus, he's just any president just footballing up.
- 1:01There, I would have called you a liar.
- 1:04OK, Calvin Klein is not a guy. That gets Kevin Klein.
- 1:08Didn't let me finish. Oh, I'm sorry, didn't let me
- 1:09finish. Calvin Klein is not a guy
- 1:11that'll get me to the theatre. Gotcha.
- 1:13Kevin Klein is also a guy. Will not get me into the
- 1:17theatre. Haven't seen a theatrical movie
- 1:19in about four years, so that's not true.
- 1:21Moana 2 buddy. Find film.
- 1:25Check it out. It's available on VHS now.
- 1:27Probably your Disney collection. Absolutely.
- 1:29From the vault. Big thick boxes.
- 1:31Yeah. So the fact that he doesn't draw
- 1:33me in. Yeah, I had not seen this movie,
- 1:36and I really don't like the title.
- 1:38Oh, really? And I'm going to tell you why.
- 1:40Please, 1993, I'm on EU OK? Things are going well for me.
- 1:46All right? I had a lot of potential.
- 1:48I had a lot of talent. 93, I was right in the middle of my
- 1:52screenplay story of my troubled childhood.
- 1:56And I titled it Dave. This movie comes out, It's over.
- 2:00I abandoned it. Yeah, that was it.
- 2:02The decline began, then never recovered.
- 2:04Wow. Sure, I could have called it
- 2:06David, but I don't think it would have the emotional punch
- 2:11like Dave. Yeah.
- 2:13So I got into drugs. OK So this movie got ruined my
- 2:16life. Wow I feel bad about bringing it
- 2:19off but. This is going to be therapeutic.
- 2:21We're going to go through it. I'm mostly joking.
- 2:24Mostly I have been working on something for a very long time,
- 2:27but it's not titled. Days you could do an exclamation
- 2:30mark is Dave Dave yeah right. Maybe that or a question mark,
- 2:33Dave, Dave that totally you got options, just you don't change
- 2:37that punctuation this brings. Us to you, the Y and the why
- 2:41Now. Now, Groundhog Day was a bit of
- 2:44a layup for itself, really. Your last four movies, three of
- 2:50them have included the president.
- 2:53Yeah. I don't know what's going on
- 2:55here, but give me some specifics about this one.
- 2:59The situation is I am desperate to see good politics in action.
- 3:06OK, even if I have to go to a movie from 30 plus years ago to
- 3:10find. It.
- 3:10Wow, yeah. I love the political world and I
- 3:14love it most when it's in movies like.
- 3:17This Have you seen West Wing? 'S favorite show.
- 3:20Thank you for asking. Of course I like House of Cards
- 3:23like it doesn't always have to be positive interesting.
- 3:27It is endlessly interesting to me, and I like it when it's
- 3:31light and fluffy, particularly when you're dealing with murders
- 3:33on the street. So I'm looking for a little
- 3:35leadership here. Hmm.
- 3:36And I have to tell you, we watched a few movies over the
- 3:40course of the podcast, but more specifically, my last pick.
- 3:44There were two fills in it, and I felt a little guilty that
- 3:49there was Phil Collins. Phil Connors, Honors and
- 3:55Punxsutawney Phil. And I thought, you know what?
- 3:57I'm gonna throw my cohost. What a guy.
- 3:59And good buddy, a little bread crumbs.
- 4:02I appreciate it, Dave. This one's for you.
- 4:04Is it? Well, I didn't know it had known
- 4:06that ruined your life. Or, you know, talk to me.
- 4:09It's not as close as I guess not.
- 4:11There's a lot you don't know, lot to uncover here.
- 4:13But that's why and I kind of thought a little bit of
- 4:16connective tissue, if you will. Ivan Reitman is a comedic
- 4:19director directed Ghostbusters most specifically, Alright,
- 4:23available in the archives. That was written by Howard
- 4:25Ramos. So it's kind of in that same
- 4:27sphere. And it's a nice little, I think
- 4:30a little book end to the American President, which came
- 4:32in a couple years later, so. I accept that.
- 4:34Great, except those. Kinda have to, yeah.
- 4:36You're here on much of A choice. You do need to understand,
- 4:39though, by bringing out the American President, which I
- 4:43believe I went on record saying was your best movie in five
- 4:49years. What's funny is that I think you
- 4:51said of Groundhog Day, it was the best movie in five.
- 4:54Years. That was the best movie of 2026.
- 4:56OK, that's how it's going to. OK, any listeners?
- 4:59But anyway, yeah, so OK, a couple of bangers you've already
- 5:02jumped on board with. Yeah, what I'm saying is shoes.
- 5:05These are size twelves. I don't know if Dave is wearing
- 5:09size 12 shoes. I think that's what people say
- 5:11about the podcast, so I think it works out well.
- 5:14I don't know if Dave's real good fit.
- 5:16Here 9 and half buddy. 9 1/2 used to be a 10.
- 5:20I think you shrink though. I don't know if your feet
- 5:22shrink. Maybe I don't.
- 5:25Know I don't. Know the whole body does.
- 5:26I'll look into it. Dad used to be sick.
- 5:28Your hand shrinks. I'm not sure which parts.
- 5:31Harrison Ford season 3 coming out shrinking.
- 5:33There was one reason to get Apple TV right now.
- 5:35It would be that show. I wanna watch it.
- 5:38Yeah. It's on Season 3, I believe.
- 5:39Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:40Great cast. I've heard nothing but good
- 5:42things about it. Your wheelhouse.
- 5:43I don't want to pull the trigger on another streaming service.
- 5:46It's a slippery slope. Absolutely.
- 5:48You know it's got the one which will not be named.
- 5:50No, of course not. Would you?
- 5:51Be interested in sharing the IBD of this week, would that be?
- 5:56Let's dig out Old Faithful, see what she has to say, yeah?
- 5:58It's going to be up and down lately.
- 6:00Well, that's a good thing. An uncanny presidential look
- 6:04alike named Dave is recruited by the Secret Service to become a
- 6:07momentary stand in for the President of the United States.
- 6:11That's exactly what the 1st 20 minutes of the movie is.
- 6:14I guess the question is, does it hook you enough to say, hey, I'm
- 6:17interested in that idea, I think that premise.
- 6:19The hook isn't there, but it is accurate.
- 6:21Well, yeah, historically, yeah. Sometimes these things, they
- 6:25embellish certain things with that and certain things or omit
- 6:27certain things that I feel like this summarizes, but it doesn't
- 6:31tell you really beyond that's like the conceit of the movie
- 6:35presidential look alike in the role of the president.
- 6:37So it's a little. Stopped.
- 6:38Not enough. For you, I think conceptually
- 6:40you might get into it. I just, I don't know if it's
- 6:42enough really. I just don't think there's any
- 6:44pleasing. You, but if I was pitching that,
- 6:46if I went into like a studio and said here's my idea, yeah,
- 6:49here's your whatever, I think there might be an uptick like
- 6:52someone might be interested in what do you call that log line?
- 6:55That's it. I learned that in school.
- 6:57I did good in school. Honors, I heard.
- 7:03Speaking of honors, this president is not very honorable.
- 7:08No, no. Throw that out there in case you
- 7:10didn't figure. That out not a good man.
- 7:12But before we get to that, we have just edits again credit.
- 7:17We get stuck with the credits over Washington Monuments.
- 7:21It's pretty and it shocks me as we're watching this.
- 7:24There was such a hullabaloo if you recall, in 2001 onward.
- 7:31Oh, and the trailer for Spiderman, the original Sam
- 7:33Raimi Spiderman. Here we going with.
- 7:35This had the two towers couldn't.
- 7:37Show it Twin towers 2 towers is a Lord of the rings there he.
- 7:40Just Twin Towers, later made in Manhattan, was a movie that had
- 7:44it omitted from the poster and the movie itself.
- 7:47And there was all these sort of rushing to remove the
- 7:50iconography from the skyline in that contemporary setting.
- 7:55But when you go back and watch something from the 70s,
- 7:58eighties, 90s in New York, it always sort of highlights that
- 8:01thing. Did we see it last week during
- 8:03mix sightseeing or was it just the Empire State Building?
- 8:05That's a good question. I must have been there.
- 8:07Watch it again, yeah? I guess I'm going to have to my
- 8:11concern when I'm watching these movies at this time, American
- 8:13president and this one is that the orange demon he he works has
- 8:21demolished the East wing of the White House.
- 8:24And so the imagery that is in all of these helicopter shots,
- 8:27the stock footage of US capital and monuments and all
- 8:31throughout, it's going to be of a bygone era.
- 8:35The White House will never look like that.
- 8:36Ever look the same until they hopefully redo it, build it,
- 8:39tear. Down the fucking ballroom and do
- 8:41something better with their lives.
- 8:42That's true. You don't like to dance?
- 8:43That's right. So that part, it just felt odd
- 8:46actually, because I've seen that imagery currently and I'm not in
- 8:50favor of whitewashing or or eliminating from art, right,
- 8:53Like it exists in the time frames.
- 8:54Wonderful. It just was a little jarring to
- 8:56me to watch it in this present climate, seeing those shots at
- 9:00the White House. Have you seen the movie Remember
- 9:02Me? I Forgot the reason I bring it
- 9:06up because I don't know if it ever come off.
- 9:07It might don't know it's a Pattinson.
- 9:09OK, Robert. I watched the whole movie.
- 9:12I think it's sort of like a romance, I think, but but a
- 9:14series like 500 days, like serious kind of romance.
- 9:17Like it's not all like. Puppy dogs and ice cream.
- 9:19Yeah, and that's what happens at the end is the 2 towers come
- 9:22down and had no idea. Like they put that at the end of
- 9:26the movie. I did not expect that to play
- 9:28into the film. OK.
- 9:29It really threw me off like, oh. It's happening.
- 9:32It's this movie set in New York at that time frame.
- 9:34It just didn't register and then all of a sudden it happens.
- 9:36Wow, interesting, never heard. Of it, maybe you'll come off.
- 9:38No, I remember liking it. We don't do enough.
- 9:40Pattinson the Batman. Yeah, that's it.
- 9:43Tenant. We did tenant as well.
- 9:45We don't have enough ladies listening.
- 9:47We might have to do Twilight. We might.
- 9:50I don't know if we need to draw them in I.
- 9:51Don't know if I'm ready for that are.
- 9:52You a team, Ed. I don't know who that is.
- 9:57I don't know who cares? What I care about is Laura
- 9:59Linney. Laura.
- 10:00Linney. Young in this.
- 10:01She's very young. We saw her in Love Actually.
- 10:042003, four era, so that's 10 years earlier.
- 10:08She's very young. And not very discreet.
- 10:10No, no. Kind of my first note that
- 10:13bothered me. It's her character, it seems,
- 10:15because in Love, Actually, everybody knew that she was in
- 10:18love with Carl too. I know she plays it well.
- 10:20She just is exuding a certain level of thirstiness.
- 10:24Yeah, I just think in this atmosphere you want to be a
- 10:27little bit more. You know, yeah, unless you're
- 10:29Bill Clinton. This is post Clinton, though, So
- 10:31I mean, there is a precedent, if you will.
- 10:34I guess. I don't know how.
- 10:35That went down. I know she went down.
- 10:37Yeah, she could look her. I want Bill side.
- 10:43Alright, man, Yeah. If I had to choose, sure.
- 10:46Don't have to luckily choose sides in this.
- 10:48But what are your thoughts are in the first?
- 10:50You know, we're past the credits.
- 10:52We got your shots of the capital, and we're inside the
- 10:55Roundhouse. Yeah.
- 10:56We've established in these very early scenes that the president
- 10:59and the first lady don't really like each other.
- 11:01They're faking it. That's true.
- 11:02And Laura Linney, as you described, is kind of the reason
- 11:05why she's not faking it. Well, maybe you don't know about
- 11:08that. So we established pretty quickly
- 11:10the 1st 8 minutes in the movie. I think it flows great.
- 11:14She's obviously not a factor. She's the character matters in
- 11:17the context of the story. But Laura Linney in this movie
- 11:20is not Laura Linney. So she's just some just starting
- 11:23out. Yeah, just some blonde on the
- 11:24desk on the floor and. It's got her feet wet in
- 11:27Hollywood. Totally.
- 11:28But I think she's great. I always really liked her and
- 11:31she's very pretty in this and she's just in general very cute.
- 11:33And I like that Sigourney Weaver is removed a little bit from the
- 11:39alien vibe, which as you know, I've seen most recently Alien
- 11:41and Aliens. Yeah, she's the theatricality in
- 11:43that, no doubt. Totally.
- 11:45And then she's obviously in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters
- 11:48too, so she and Reitman have a relationship.
- 11:50That's right, yeah. But it's nice to see her play
- 11:53more humor because she's kind of the straight person in
- 11:56Ghostbusters shaking your head questioning like Venkman is
- 11:59sort. Of yeah, she had some issues in
- 12:01Ghostbusters. Yes, I mean.
- 12:02She was asked to throw. Some stuff, whether some stuff.
- 12:05So those are all really nice introductions to the characters
- 12:08that were setting up the rest of the movie with.
- 12:11And they established again, very early on that the president
- 12:14needs to look alike for this upcoming event.
- 12:17Yeah. And we get to meet Dave.
- 12:19Dave and Stephen Root. I can never have enough Stephen
- 12:22Root. Absolutely.
- 12:22I love that guys, particularly in Surviving Christmas.
- 12:24I know you were such a fan of his in that.
- 12:26I imagine I was remember. But he's great in everything,
- 12:30Barry. Yeah sure, Season 7 of The West
- 12:32Wing, he's all over that too. So here you go.
- 12:34Obviously has nothing to do here, but it's funny to watch
- 12:36cause this is right before News Radio.
- 12:38I think that. Opened in 94 or something yeah,
- 12:40around there. Great show.
- 12:42It's just. Really cool to watch this movie
- 12:45not knowing anything about anybody in it at the time and
- 12:49seeing how so much of this cast just went on to not only like
- 12:52something but pretty big. Thing pretty big careers.
- 12:55It's kind of exciting. One of the things I love about
- 12:57going to this era is is that it's a little bit more than we
- 13:01had Nancy recently. She was great in 93 Nancy.
- 13:07Three or four people went on to have absolutely strong careers.
- 13:09A lot of Fraser in. Here Anna Devere Smith is in
- 13:11this also in the American president that she pops up all
- 13:14over West Wing. Again, Laura Linney Ving Rames
- 13:16Bulldog. Bulldog is in this.
- 13:18That's right. That's.
- 13:19Right, I missed it the first time.
- 13:22But I'm sure Frank Langella, who's just great in everything,
- 13:26Kevin Dunn, just a nice piece. Again, you just.
- 13:29Which I thought was Stephen Root.
- 13:30I get them a little bit confused sometimes.
- 13:32You are confused. Generally speaking, a bit of a
- 13:36look alike if you will, and my other look alike to Kevin Kline.
- 13:41Let me ask you this if you see it at.
- 13:42All OK. Brent Spiner.
- 13:45Not even a little. Bit oht.
- 13:47Come on, give me just a little when he smirks.
- 13:49There's a little Brent there. Questionable.
- 13:52Alright, I I can't. Give it.
- 13:54OK, that's fine. I know it's a stretch, but I had
- 13:56to ask again. It's in the script.
- 13:58I got this kid working on this. He did Trekkie.
- 14:00OK, Alright, I hired him actually.
- 14:02Makes sense. Makes sense?
- 14:04Another face that comes up right around now.
- 14:07Did you notice the Secret Service when they go to Dave's
- 14:11department? We've got Ving Rames.
- 14:13Yeah. Do you know who the other guy?
- 14:14Is no idea. No, I watched the second time I
- 14:17looked at him. I don't know who.
- 14:18You are. He is the man that had his nose
- 14:20bit off by the Penguin on Batman Returns.
- 14:22Really. Yeah, he survived.
- 14:24He's good. Did you have to look that?
- 14:26Up. No, I knew him as that.
- 14:27I couldn't tell you his name because I didn't look.
- 14:29At it. And that was 90. 2 That's what
- 14:31I'm saying. So he's.
- 14:32Always. Not right now.
- 14:33Yeah, he's boiling anyway, so that's I remember.
- 14:37Good for you. Yeah, you're very good at that.
- 14:39So. I was pleased that I finally
- 14:41managed. To I applaud it to do it.
- 14:43But yeah, so this is it. They're trying to convince him
- 14:46to one off. Easy peasy.
- 14:47Yeah. Do you believe that that that's
- 14:49a thing in real life? Doubt it because to find someone
- 14:55that looks that much like the Dorito demon and I see I'm
- 14:58upping it to that. Respect.
- 15:01I don't think it is. The fact that they're asking you
- 15:04to buy into it tells me this is probably not a thing.
- 15:17This Dave character, he works at a temp agency.
- 15:20Yeah, it's like an employment. Yeah, and he has a good friend,
- 15:23Murray. That's right.
- 15:24When you get into a problem, you call.
- 15:25Murray yeah, he really abuses that friendship.
- 15:28Seems like which I really get a kick out of.
- 15:30I think that's funny. Charles Grodin.
- 15:32What are your thoughts on him? I only knew him by name.
- 15:35OK. His name was mentioned in the
- 15:37Kathy Griffin episode of Seinfeld about being on The
- 15:41Tonight Show. Yeah, he had a Charles Grodin
- 15:43bit. OK, like a hot sauce that had a
- 15:46picture that looked like Charles, apparently.
- 15:48OK, but I had no idea who this guy was.
- 15:50He was the dad in Beethoven. That's right, six or seven-year
- 15:55old. I remember that.
- 15:56Yeah, he directed a couple of Simon and Garfunkel specials in
- 16:00the 60s. Obviously didn't see those at
- 16:01the time, but for me he was always the guy in Midnight Run
- 16:05with Robert De Niro's one of my favorite movies when I was
- 16:08younger. I thought he was so dry, so
- 16:10funny playing off of De Niro when I saw him in this, and I
- 16:13was like, I love this guy, wonderful.
- 16:15But he kind of disappeared. I never really saw him much, but
- 16:17yeah, those key moments. I get the sense he did a lot of
- 16:20stuff in the 60s and 70s and been around a long time.
- 16:22Quite it down then. I really loved his vibe and he's
- 16:25the same in this, where he's got that, you know, uneasy,
- 16:30uncomfortable. I think it's really cute and I
- 16:32like that relationship and it plays out obviously through the
- 16:34rest of the. Movie.
- 16:34I wouldn't call it cute, but I'm with you.
- 16:36OK, that's fine. Sometimes you misuse cute.
- 16:39Maybe too cute by half someone. Said, but as cute as Dave's
- 16:45grin. That smoky grin.
- 16:50What would you do if you came face to face with a doppelganger
- 16:53that really look like you? I've been told that other times.
- 16:56So I was like, oh, I saw someone looks exactly like you wanna
- 16:58bust or I saw someone, but I have never been confronted with
- 17:01my own. However, I have known at times
- 17:05same situation except for other people.
- 17:07I know all right, but I've never seen myself.
- 17:09Have you ever had that where you're?
- 17:10Seeing traces of yourself and around well, let's first of all,
- 17:14and I hope not that's let's preface this by saying I'm an
- 17:17idiot. OK?
- 17:18I don't think it needs to go with saying no, but.
- 17:20It's a tacit understanding. But does that work once?
- 17:22And I saw this person and look like an older version of me who
- 17:26had maybe made more mistakes than I already had.
- 17:29And I thought for a second, maybe I had time traveled.
- 17:32Looped time, Yeah. You think you were.
- 17:34Looked and it's still comes in my mind every once a while.
- 17:37This is like 2020 and it's stupid but sure.
- 17:40But not really. Not that far before you would
- 17:42have changed your life around. Yeah, right.
- 17:44Maybe in a? Weird way it may have triggered
- 17:46something in the back of your. Possible, but being a redhead
- 17:49though. Everybody is just you.
- 17:51I've been called Prince Harry. Yeah.
- 17:53I don't see it. No, Meghan Markle doesn't see
- 17:57it. She blocked me.
- 18:00I did not appreciate the But no, it would be kind of cool,
- 18:04though. I, I see our friend Pat.
- 18:06Yes, I see versions of him all over the world at the airport.
- 18:10So I don't know what it is about him.
- 18:12He's lanky, he's tall, but he's got to look to him.
- 18:14He's definitely has a look. Maybe I just miss him.
- 18:16I just want to. See, could be that, could be
- 18:18that. Yeah, I'm more of a smells.
- 18:22Yeah, yeah, like I will get a whiff of something and I'll just
- 18:24be like, I know that person like that is a perfume or a scent or
- 18:28a just something in the air. It can pull me right back to
- 18:31wherever that thing was. That's interesting.
- 18:33When I had the smell thing is like, oh I did eat that.
- 18:36That, that makes sense. OHS popcorn again?
- 18:38Yeah, what I do remember about this scene in particular with
- 18:43the face to face is watching Entertainment Tonight in 93.
- 18:47I watched that show a lot and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
- 18:50Tash has always been a movie kid.
- 18:52So that was that was the show. And I remember there was a big
- 18:55section or segment of the show dedicated to the special effect
- 18:59of having 2 Kevin Klines face to face.
- 19:02Yeah, pre or around the same time 93 of Jurassic Parks or
- 19:06computer generated effects were kind of a thing.
- 19:08And they've been doing twins and things like that in movies
- 19:10forever. Movie called that's right.
- 19:12But this was an example of camera tricks and and CG and
- 19:15this and that to make it so that they're looking at one another
- 19:18and how that was like revolutionary that they wanted a
- 19:21whole segment on this game. It's all right.
- 19:22And now it's I mean, I watch Sinners and it's Michael B
- 19:26Jordan playing 2 completely separate characters interacting
- 19:31with each other, sharing cigarettes with one another.
- 19:33It's like, yeah, like it doesn't even register.
- 19:36Whereas this you see a little bit of the creases, but I think
- 19:40it still looks good. Doesn't Take Me Out, but I just
- 19:42remember that was like the big thing for this movie.
- 19:44It's like, Oh my gosh, check out this scene.
- 19:46I didn't see I'm watching the VHS version.
- 19:48By the way, you're going all the way back.
- 19:49I wonder how the payroll works though.
- 19:51You're doing 2 roles here, you know.
- 19:53Yeah, he's got a shrewd negotiator.
- 19:55I suspect I don't. Expect maybe 2 full salaries but
- 19:57maybe a little bit of a bonus. That's fair.
- 20:00They get him to make a speech. Yeah.
- 20:05And that is true as he's leaving.
- 20:07This is one of my favorite moments in the movie.
- 20:09Interesting. It's really early on, like less
- 20:11than 20 minutes ish. Hmm.
- 20:12As he's being escorted from the building.
- 20:15The real president. the OR the fake one?
- 20:17The fake one. Dave.
- 20:18Dave. Gotcha.
- 20:20And he's caught up in the moment.
- 20:23Yes, yes. And he turns around and God
- 20:26bless you, God Bless America and the cameras pushing in on him.
- 20:30And there's just like patriotism, it's a double edged
- 20:33sword at times, But these elements in this movie where
- 20:36your idealism of that nationalism, Yeah.
- 20:39And pride is there. So when he's overcome with the
- 20:43emotion, it feels like the best of America, right?
- 20:47Like, I believe in this. And to me, I would equate it to
- 20:51similarly. There are times when, depending
- 20:53on the moment, I could be at a hockey game or at some other
- 20:55venue and the Canadian anthem plays.
- 20:57You're proud guy. And I could be moved to tears by
- 21:00that song, in that moment, sharing that moment with 20,000
- 21:03people, whatever that. Is keep doing.
- 21:05It exactly. And so when I watch him do that,
- 21:07it feels completely natural to be caught up.
- 21:10And I just want to say that like is my one chance kind of thing.
- 21:13Even leading up to that, when he just does the initial wave, yes,
- 21:17And then he does like a thumbs up.
- 21:18Yeah, he has a smile. Like it's just gradually
- 21:21building up to that. And everybody on the sides are
- 21:23all like giving the thumbs and the high fives, the clapping and
- 21:26the tough to not. Get caught up for sure.
- 21:28I was going to ask you this question so I will.
- 21:31Did you want or do you feel it needed any training montage up
- 21:37to this point? Because this movie is going at a
- 21:39pretty good pace. Learning how to do more of what
- 21:42the president does more than mannerisms.
- 21:44Other than we just need you to wave.
- 21:46That's it. Like teaching you how to make
- 21:48sure you don't do this, Make sure you don't smirk like that.
- 21:50Do you think the movie would have?
- 21:52Benefited from that? No, I mean I love a montage and
- 21:55luckily we get one later. That's why I'm asking.
- 21:57But I don't need two or three of them, OK, because he's just
- 22:01doing what he's been doing. When he saw him do the speech at
- 22:02the car dealership, he's got the mannerisms down.
- 22:05OK, That's enough. So I feel like we've established
- 22:07that he's already developed those tools to be the look like
- 22:11anyway, because it's not even like they're pulling them off
- 22:13the street as a look alike. Hey, you look like the
- 22:16president. We need you.
- 22:18Yeah, this is a guy that impersonates the president.
- 22:20That's a good point. Side job.
- 22:22So he's already done some of that research, so I don't.
- 22:24Foundation is already there. Yeah, because I felt this movie
- 22:27almost rushed too fast. But at the same time, I kind of
- 22:31liked it. I want to get into this because
- 22:33I can see the potential of this movie, of what it would be like
- 22:36for someone because I know something's going to happen.
- 22:37He's going to have to step up and go beyond just a wave.
- 22:40That's right. So, well, we're 18 minutes into
- 22:42the movie and the president basically dies.
- 22:45Well, kind of like Mad Max's wife still got vital signs.
- 22:48That's right. He's still fine, but he's gonna
- 22:49be a vegetable, I think is what Alan says.
- 22:52That's right. And so that sets the tone for
- 22:54the movie. Dave has to take over the
- 22:57presidency and to set that all up in 20 minutes in very, very
- 23:02succinct fashion. Pretty session.
- 23:04Yeah. I'm really impressed by that.
- 23:07Now Bob and Alan have to sell it to him.
- 23:09There you go. Take a seat.
- 23:10There it is. You spin around.
- 23:11I don't know. Be comfortable, Right.
- 23:13Get cozy. Yeah.
- 23:14We get the impression Bob is a little bit different than Allen.
- 23:19Allen's a little less of a bad person.
- 23:21Yeah, we've established Bob wants.
- 23:23To, for lack of a better term. Bob has eyes on the president's
- 23:27vice president is mentally incapacitated, he says.
- 23:30Yes, I do enjoy the line while trying to convince them that the
- 23:34country is sick. Yes, and you have to take them
- 23:38to the hospital. Exactly legal and sure he would
- 23:42pick up on. Every red light things.
- 23:43Like that. Yeah, exactly.
- 23:45So I think they do a pretty good job of selling this to him.
- 23:49And I think Dave? Is excited at the prospect.
- 23:52I would like, how could you turn that down right?
- 23:54Absolutely. It's a wonderful opportunity.
- 23:56Kevin Klein is an actor. We talked about him in the Ice
- 23:58Storm. That's correct.
- 23:59And I love him and that I love him and everything.
- 24:01He's just one of those actors for me that doesn't work a lot.
- 24:04But when he's in there, I just enjoy what he's doing, and him
- 24:08playing Dave in the White House in these early stages I think
- 24:14are so endearing. Endearing.
- 24:17That would be a good. Word.
- 24:18You know when he picks up the phone.
- 24:20It's just. Nothing.
- 24:21Thank you. There's some subtle humor in
- 24:23this that I totally. And then also the fear and the
- 24:25awe right in The West Wing. I'm in the residency.
- 24:29I'm looking around these presidents, Nixon and Kennedy
- 24:33and Lincoln. The big ones, yeah.
- 24:34Maybe not Nixon, but right, like, but these are the icons of
- 24:38the past, the foundations and cornerstones of the country, and
- 24:41he's standing in the room. He's just Dave down the road
- 24:44doing this thing. So I thought he conveys that
- 24:46incredibly well. Having him play two different
- 24:48characters, I kind of forget that he's is the same person as
- 24:52an actor. Yeah, that's a win, I think, if
- 24:54you can do that. I agree.
- 24:55He's really, really good. And what's also really good is
- 24:59montage. We alluded to it earlier.
- 25:01Bob and Alan, they need more from him.
- 25:04Yeah, he's gotta learn names. That's right.
- 25:06He's got to learn how the government works, the structure
- 25:09of it. Exactly.
- 25:10That's important. It's even really important now.
- 25:12People should know they are three equal branches.
- 25:15Should know I. Don't think they do.
- 25:18I think this is a really good scene because we don't want to
- 25:21spend a lot of time like that's why Montage is perfect for this
- 25:25section. But the fact that he did study
- 25:27him, and you have Bob and Alan sitting there watching him, and
- 25:31they have that look on their face like, OK, I think we might
- 25:34be in pretty good hands. We got it.
- 25:35You know, some of his mannerisms.
- 25:37That scene, I think, is very important.
- 25:39It's your buy in the fantasy aspect.
- 25:40OK. I'm willing to go there with the
- 25:44idea, but unless you can deliver on it, you're gonna be dead in
- 25:47the water. I think we talked about that in
- 25:49different movies, right? Where the nitpicking elevates
- 25:51when you're not bought in. Exactly.
- 25:53That's when you know the writing is pretty tight and there's all
- 25:56of everything. Is gelling together.
- 25:58That's right. So I got my montage.
- 26:11You get 1. Too, I guess.
- 26:13Thank. You suppose?
- 26:15Tell me about this one. I don't mind them either.
- 26:18This one I think necessary so we don't slow down the movie too
- 26:22much. We have him kissing babies.
- 26:25The Chinese delicacy by delegation.
- 26:28Delegation has all the bigger things going.
- 26:31Stately things. Exactly.
- 26:32Credential thing seems to be handling it relatively well.
- 26:35We have them in the arm machine. That's right.
- 26:37Also a bit of a callback to Aliens where Ripley is Sigourney
- 26:41Weaver is in a machine like that and ends up like.
- 26:43A floater mean it. Spoil it for pretty iconic
- 26:47imagery from that movie. So it always made me chuckle
- 26:49that she's off to the side as he's doing this thing.
- 26:52And then we have Jay Leno, who's infamous for showing up very 93.
- 26:57He seems to be the guy. Yeah, yeah, options.
- 26:59But he seems to do the job in these movies.
- 27:02And you have Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 27:04Yeah, showing up as himself. Bacon 93.
- 27:08Yeah, it was probably on the presidential health kick, right?
- 27:11That was the whole thing. There we go, Doughnuts, he says.
- 27:14The first. Bitch.
- 27:15How cool is that? I don't know if it's a sinker or
- 27:18pitch, it was, but. I am struck by how, again, I
- 27:23don't like baseball. I know, but like baseball shows
- 27:26like that where you're standing in the middle of 20,030 thousand
- 27:31people. I think about soccer matches, I
- 27:34think about football games, anything where you're a dwarf by
- 27:38comparison to the scope and size of and they're all there
- 27:42ostensibly for you. The energy and he throws it and
- 27:45then throws his glove up and whatever.
- 27:47His excitement is just infectious, I think, in these
- 27:49moments. The only thing that got me a
- 27:50little bit more excited was seeing the McLaughlin Group is
- 27:55in my household. PS I believe yeah, absolutely.
- 27:57His voice. Yeah, dude, what a commanding
- 27:59voice. I.
- 28:00Only can think of Dana Carvey when I think.
- 28:03Of that, did you impression of McLaughlin?
- 28:05He would ask a question and then he would just say wrong.
- 28:08Pat Buchanan. I have to check.
- 28:10That out it's really hilarious. He did it all the time, but it
- 28:13would just be random ideas thrown out and then like this is
- 28:17exactly like this wrong path Buchanan and he was like always
- 28:20a. Guest I need more Dana Carvey in
- 28:21my feet. And I think it's just saying it
- 28:24loudly. But yeah, great sequence, great
- 28:28tempo of the movie. We have a moment with Dwayne.
- 28:32I don't know if you caught. It tell me.
- 28:34It's been established that he likes to make sandwiches.
- 28:36Yes. I think he got carrots on it.
- 28:38Yeah. What are we doing here?
- 28:39I'm out. This is it.
- 28:41And he's trying to build this connection with Duane
- 28:44Stephenson. And he asks them, would you take
- 28:47a bullet for me? Because that's something you do
- 28:50as the Secret Service guy doesn't really answer the
- 28:52question. He's not really the.
- 28:54President. He's not, Yeah.
- 28:56So I like that moment where he's trying to make that connection
- 28:59with that character. Keep that tab.
- 29:01Open, just make sure we close it is the.
- 29:03Key. The end.
- 29:03Yeah, for sure I will. It's some point that loop needs
- 29:06to be. Closed.
- 29:06We say a lot of things, mostly me at the beginning and they'll
- 29:10say I'll do something at the end, like we'll rank them or
- 29:12something. And I almost reveal something
- 29:14and I don't. I just never get her.
- 29:16I just don't do it. I just forget.
- 29:18What I don't forget is there was a scandal.
- 29:20Oh, yeah, First Liberty. It's a bank, yes, and it's just
- 29:25important to know that they're going to dump that on to the
- 29:27VIP. Hmm, another tab.
- 29:29Look at 2:00. So that's happening around.
- 29:33This point, you're digging into a bit more of the plot we got.
- 29:36Bob, we already know, is not necessarily a good guy.
- 29:39He's got ambitions beyond what he's doing, yes, And these are
- 29:42the ways in which he's dropping hints that he's got a plan.
- 29:46It's a little bit lighter, I think, if you want to compare it
- 29:48to American president, like we're not bombing places, we're
- 29:51no war happening, smaller venue. If you will.
- 29:56And my next quick note here is in the limo, which I've never
- 30:00been in one. I'd like to be 2.
- 30:03If you can arrange that, be great.
- 30:05I think I've earned it. He looks at her leg.
- 30:08Sigourney Weaver's leg seems like that slip.
- 30:10That's what they call. It he likes that.
- 30:12I didn't get anything from that. Is that weird that I, You know,
- 30:16I don't think that's weird. I think it's a chaste, quiet
- 30:20roll romantic comedy. Yeah.
- 30:21I think what you need is something a little.
- 30:24Harder. I think it's.
- 30:24Cleavage. I think that's what I'm looking
- 30:26for. Really Love a good cat.
- 30:27Strong calf. Yeah.
- 30:29I don't know what it is, but a cat can get me going.
- 30:31Good for you. What gets me really going,
- 30:35David, of course, is homeless children.
- 30:38It's riled up. It's the sweetest moment of the
- 30:41movie. It is sweet.
- 30:42And being a kid that at times was the kid on the outside and
- 30:45knowing people in that world, it's cute that Dave makes the
- 30:49effort. This little moment together that
- 30:53is caught a little bit by the press, but more so by Sigourney
- 30:56Weavers character. Yeah, First lady.
- 30:58So she is softening to this new version of him, which obviously
- 31:03will expose it later, right. But so that is like you're
- 31:07dropping that hint, which I enjoy, and it adds the gravitas
- 31:11to what happens next, which is the word gets out, Bob is
- 31:15killed, the homeless bill that the first lady had sponsored.
- 31:18Yeah, Bob doesn't care about. Bob doesn't give a shit.
- 31:21No, he does not. So it adds some weight and
- 31:24gravity to the role and it isn't just making speeches and it
- 31:27isn't just shaking the hands and being the fun president making
- 31:30jokes. This ratchets up the plot and it
- 31:34takes to the next level. This again, just really solid
- 31:36writing. I promised myself I would make a
- 31:38lot of comparisons to American president.
- 31:40Yeah, sure. I don't think I.
- 31:41Have no, no, you stood tall. Here's.
- 31:43One, they killed Annette Bennings, Bill, that's right.
- 31:47And they have a conversation. And I don't think this reaches
- 31:52that. I think everything in American
- 31:53president is designed to be a little more intense.
- 31:56Yeah, this is meant to be a little bit lighter with some
- 31:59serious moments like this one is good.
- 32:01Yeah, I'm not comparing it, but no, that's fair, but enough to
- 32:04bring it up. I think this is more pitched as
- 32:06comedy, and I think American President is a dramedy, if you
- 32:10will. There's a little bit more depth.
- 32:12I think you're definitely correct in that.
- 32:13That's right. But Bob gives him a way out,
- 32:15much like Andrew Sheppard did in The American President.
- 32:19He says get those votes and we'll get you over the hump,
- 32:22right? 650.
- 32:23Million you can keep your stupid, you know, homeless
- 32:25shelter and storms. Off you didn't mean it though.
- 32:27Apparently. But no one told Dave that no,
- 32:30and luckily for him, Murray. Yeah, brings him in, Yes.
- 32:33So brings in the ringer. I think in if this is real, I
- 32:37think they kill Murray, you know, that he goes away.
- 32:41They find. Out never be found.
- 32:42Again. Yeah, he found out that he went
- 32:44to the the was gonna say warehouse.
- 32:46He ended up in a warehouse. Yeah, exactly a few pieces.
- 32:49This is my favorite scene in the movie when he's trying to
- 32:52convince, take it easy. When he's trying to convince
- 32:55Grodin to come over and he says something about that's not the
- 32:59government or whatever else. And Dave is like, I am the
- 33:01government, don't worry, Like, you're OK.
- 33:03And when they're working through the budget, crunching the
- 33:06numbers, it's obviously fantasy, right?
- 33:09Like, whatever. But when you're having all the
- 33:11secretaries around the table and he's just sort of, we're making
- 33:15ads for cars that people already bought, like, we don't need
- 33:17that. And we don't need that.
- 33:18And we don't. It's not Dodge that obnoxious
- 33:21nonsense, and it's not the current situation, even in
- 33:25Canada, where it's sort of like federal workers, get rid of
- 33:28them, they're useless, yadda yadda.
- 33:29You're not by the. Way it is making fun of and
- 33:32enjoying the fact that bureaucracy sucks and like, all
- 33:35the layers and whatever, you could just get it.
- 33:37Yeah. Just the bottom line, which
- 33:40doesn't exist and shouldn't exist.
- 33:42But it's a nice fantasy to have. And watching this guy and Murray
- 33:46put together the plan, it's nice.
- 33:48And the music plays. James Newton Howard score,
- 33:50nothing exceptional, but just meets that moment.
- 33:53And there's a real relief when he signs the $650 million
- 33:58dollars. Yeah.
- 33:59Howard, which is a guy I like. Yes, it's great.
- 34:02Blood Diamond. Amazing.
- 34:04He's in my Spotify. Sure.
- 34:06What? I didn't get Howard in this
- 34:08movie though. This is the only moment that the
- 34:10score I thought stood out. Yeah, OK.
- 34:12Like got me caught up in the moment.
- 34:14And that's because I really like the moment in general.
- 34:16So it's all part of the same package.
- 34:18If you will. You know I will.
- 34:22And then obviously Bob is just like, furious.
- 34:24He didn't want this. He didn't ask for this.
- 34:26He was obviously joking, didn't mean it, blah, blah, blah, blah
- 34:28blah. He's a bit of a jerk, yes, bit
- 34:30of a jerk. So too was Bill Mitchell, it
- 34:32turns out, but luckily for Sigourney Weaver's character,
- 34:37she finds out Dave is not Bill. Yes, I can touch on this.
- 34:42Talk to me. There's a scene just before in
- 34:45the shower yes face off is a movie that can never come off
- 34:50the shelf. OK, not a lot.
- 34:52I'm telling you right now we're spared that yes, you are not
- 34:56John who's masterpiece cannot come off the shelf.
- 34:59I assume you don't own it. I do not don't worry, it's not
- 35:02coming from me. Fantastic hate that movie.
- 35:04OK in this movie reminded me a little bit of it because there
- 35:07is that buy in and why this shower scene triggered that
- 35:11movie for me is she obviously can see his.
- 35:15Wang. It's a nice way of putting it.
- 35:18Well, from Moo to Wang and in face off, just their heads are
- 35:23the same. It's a face off.
- 35:24That's it. That's it.
- 35:25Yeah. And when you're naked, like
- 35:28everything is different. They had sex.
- 35:29Like I have seen the movie. OK.
- 35:31I've never seen it. Yeah.
- 35:32There's no way you would know. Exactly.
- 35:34There's a million ways you would know that's not him.
- 35:36And I just think I cannot buy him to that movie, that concept,
- 35:39and I hate it for that. OK.
- 35:41Maybe I'm being too. Harsh if it means we're not
- 35:43taking it off the shelf. Dave, you be as harsh as you
- 35:45want, buddy. I'll stand by you.
- 35:48Thank you. Solidarity.
- 35:50But she had realized before the shower scene because of the leg.
- 35:54Because the leg doesn't look at my legs.
- 35:56It's been a long time. He used to be a leg guy and.
- 35:59Now Lenny Guy. Your legs to Lenny's very good,
- 36:05but tell me about the actual scene where she does reveal that
- 36:09she knows. I think this is her scene in the
- 36:11movie. Like I think this is where an
- 36:13actor as good as her gets to really shine.
- 36:16She's really wants to see the president as he is, so they
- 36:21bring him into her, into the warehouse.
- 36:23Thanks to Duane Stephenson. That's right.
- 36:25And I thought her performance here, seeing Bill, even though
- 36:28we know they don't like each other, you know, people talk
- 36:30about relationships that end, whether it's marriages or
- 36:33boyfriends, difference, whatever else, you know, and and there
- 36:35will always be something I think, yeah, the caring on some
- 36:40level, you know? Could be the kids keep you.
- 36:42Could be anything, but I'm not saying in a pining and a needing
- 36:46or yearning way, but just I think if I met my 17 year old
- 36:50self's girlfriend today I would feel something about that.
- 36:55I wouldn't be in love, I wouldn't like be dropping
- 36:58everything in my life to do something, but it would be a
- 37:00connection that you just don't lose.
- 37:03Yeah, overnight. Even if you hate each other at
- 37:04the end of the thing, it doesn't delete all the other stuff that
- 37:08came before. It triggers an emotion and
- 37:10something. Hopefully it's not anger.
- 37:11Sure, or maybe it is. But so for watching her and the
- 37:14sensitivity that she approaches, this moment I thought was really
- 37:18poignant because she's such a good actor.
- 37:21Otherwise it's just like plot device to keep it moving.
- 37:24This solidifies Galaxy Quest coming out in 2026.
- 37:27We're gonna watch. It wow, I've never seen that
- 37:29movie. Tim Allen, buddy.
- 37:31Oh yeah, Rickman has a bigger role in that.
- 37:33OK, it's a fun one. I think she's a great actor and
- 37:36it's nice anytime that she comes off the shelf, which isn't
- 37:39often, but having in watched Alien and Aliens in the span of
- 37:42a couple weeks. She's great.
- 37:43You probably watched them in theatres.
- 37:45I did of course. Not this unfortunately, but the
- 37:47Aliens movies for sure. And this is interesting because
- 37:50they decide that they're both going to leave.
- 37:54That's right, she if he's gone, then she has no purpose there.
- 37:56She's not the first. Lady, that's what she says.
- 37:58Yeah, she's not wrong. That's right.
- 38:00I think it's a little hasty here.
- 38:01You don't want to just dissolve the government in the.
- 38:04Middle. Exactly.
- 38:05So I was a little concerned about the movie at this point
- 38:07with the structure, like, oh. Yeah, how do you get out of?
- 38:09This exactly, and he's trying to steal towels which is just
- 38:12funny. Of course you'll take the
- 38:14towels. I've never taken a towel.
- 38:15I've never taken anything from a hotel.
- 38:18I have not either, but I'll tell you one thing.
- 38:19My favorite towels in the world are at hotels.
- 38:22I like them scratchy, starchy like thin towel.
- 38:27I don't like a cushy thick towel.
- 38:29It drives me bonkers. I want really like coarse.
- 38:32These hotel towels are my favorite that was in the world
- 38:35and I wish I could keep. Them.
- 38:36Well, you haven't been to Turkey then.
- 38:38They don't have the towels you're looking for.
- 38:39No, they're too lush. Hate a lush towel.
- 38:42I just don't think they're very good.
- 38:43Yeah. Like washed.
- 38:47And this leads us to a scene that I'm not a big fan of.
- 38:50Oh, tell me more. They get pulled over by a police
- 38:52officer. Too early for flapjacks.
- 38:56Wish that had happened. I did see the infraction,
- 38:59though. OK Yeah, of course.
- 39:00I saw that clear as day. Yeah.
- 39:02So he's not without president, huh?
- 39:04You get it, President. But I don't think the scene is
- 39:06necessary at all. And they get out of the car and
- 39:09they sing. I know you want to bomb them a
- 39:11little bit together, but I think the next sequence where they're
- 39:14having a sandwich at night on the little hill there, I think
- 39:19that's enough. If it's just that though, it's
- 39:22like a 3 minute scene. This allows it to kind of
- 39:24breathe a little bit for me. What it is now opportunity for?
- 39:28Singing. Well, that he's got a great
- 39:30voice, beautiful Pirates of Penzance, but for me it's an
- 39:34opportunity for him to do his Mitchell's schtick that he talks
- 39:40about. He's got this bit about Club Med
- 39:42with the president and whatever he doesn't get chance to do it.
- 39:44I really like it and I like it. The sort of button at the end,
- 39:46which was like you're good. She needs work.
- 39:49And of course she's the. One part I didn't mind.
- 39:51That's pretty funny. But I like the scene overall.
- 39:54And Annie, you know, one of my all time favorite musicals.
- 39:55So there you go. I mean, I'm hooked.
- 39:58That's where we go our. Separate ways off the shelf,
- 40:02Buddy. Coming soon.
- 40:04John Houston Masterpiece. But I think we both can agree
- 40:07that Bob needs to. Go.
- 40:09Yeah, Bob needs to go. Absolutely not.
- 40:12Before we meet little Bonnie Hunt.
- 40:14Bonnie Hunt, Bonnie Hunt. And we're walking and we're
- 40:17walking and we're. Oh, yeah.
- 40:19And that's who she sees. Bob.
- 40:20Yeah. You know, there's a chief of
- 40:22staff. We're just like barreling
- 40:24through. The tour I've seen you walk like
- 40:26that. You're a man on a mission that
- 40:28is angry. No, but always with purpose.
- 40:31Always with purpose. Good for you.
- 40:32It's so good. But yeah, Bobby fired here by
- 40:36Dave. And what do you do?
- 40:38Bob obviously has no recourse here technically.
- 40:40Not yet. He's going to.
- 40:42But he talks about how he made Dave and he's a nobody.
- 40:46And the way that Klein delivers, I'm not nobody.
- 40:50It's such a again, it's just the quality of acting because that's
- 40:54a line that yeah, you've been Damascus rated, you want to
- 40:56stand up. But his delivery of that it's.
- 40:59Perfect. It's lost himself in the role.
- 41:01And the way in which he then says, yeah, like, I've got an
- 41:04alibi, like Bob, you're done. Yeah, What's Bob going to do?
- 41:07That's it, Expose himself. He's just got to get escorted
- 41:09off the premises because Dave's got a press conference to get
- 41:12to. Yeah, for now, we'll get back
- 41:13to. That another pin if you will.
- 41:25The Jobs for America's speech. Yes.
- 41:28It's not great. OK, I didn't love it.
- 41:30Wow, tell me more. It's not a bad speech, I just
- 41:33don't think he's coming strong enough in the first little bit.
- 41:37It's only the first couple minutes of the speech.
- 41:39It picks up and it gets better as we get to the end.
- 41:42It just didn't knock my socks off.
- 41:44I guess There's nothing really wrong with it.
- 41:45Sure the scene didn't like wow. It didn't leave me like.
- 41:48Breathless. Do you think part of it has to
- 41:51do with you being unemployed and enjoying it?
- 41:58I did write down what I get, a new job.
- 42:00I feel dread. I don't feel like flying, so
- 42:03maybe that is. It might be part of it.
- 42:05It's I heard this speech and having gone through some trials
- 42:09and tribulation over the years in the last since COVID, you
- 42:13felt it. There is that feeling of, and
- 42:16this is I think ubiquitous in the people that think that
- 42:19everybody in the world or everybody in the country wants
- 42:21to milk the welfare system and like Coast and EI and just, you
- 42:26know, milk. At my first job when I was 15, I
- 42:29was ecstatic to have a job, and then at 19, when I started at
- 42:34the video store, I was ecstatic to get that job.
- 42:36I get movies in my life every day of the week.
- 42:39And then perfect for you, I got a job at an airline, an airline
- 42:42I. Loved you and you loved to fly
- 42:44like. Right.
- 42:45Like, right. So I was like, I'm so happy.
- 42:47I feel part of something bigger than me.
- 42:49And then working for the feds, it's that same.
- 42:52I'm helping. So I personally have felt that
- 42:55four separate times in my life. Gotcha.
- 42:57Yeah, that I am over the moon to be doing the job I'm doing for
- 43:03the people I'm doing it for. And that speech nails it.
- 43:05See, I was a shoe salesman, much like a couple characters later.
- 43:10Bundy. And I was in telecom and they're
- 43:14the devil. Yeah, So sure, maybe that's why
- 43:17I don't. That's fair.
- 43:18Connect as well. I mean, I've had some good jobs,
- 43:20don't get me wrong, but. Anyway, So yeah, I think
- 43:22obviously depends on the job, but I've felt proud to say I
- 43:26work here and work here and work here, right.
- 43:28I mean, I think as a person, mentally, instinctively, you
- 43:33know, it's better to be working. Sure.
- 43:35You feel purpose. You feel exactly.
- 43:36You get up in the morning. Exactly.
- 43:38You have to have that. So that's built into us as
- 43:40people. So with the grand picture, I
- 43:42think he's right in saying that if the speech doesn't deliver,
- 43:45that's one thing. But I think the core of the
- 43:47message, I think is still absolutely resonates.
- 43:49Now, certain senators may not agree because now we got a quick
- 43:53little montage. Yeah.
- 43:55Little, little one. These are real people.
- 43:57Yeah. OK.
- 43:58But really, it was all over stone.
- 43:59That stood out to me. Oh yeah, this is just after JFK.
- 44:03Ohhhhh yeah. So he's peddling his conspiracy
- 44:05thing. Everyone that was heard of his
- 44:06schtick at the time was OHT Yeah, no stone, another
- 44:10conspiracy at it. So having him here is kind of
- 44:12cheeky and fun. Yeah, Larry King.
- 44:14Of course he has to make his appearance.
- 44:16Of course he's around. Mcglaughlin Group once again
- 44:19pops up. Always gets me excited, but
- 44:22there's something else that gets me very excited.
- 44:24Tell me in this moment. I can.
- 44:26Tell I have no idea who the vice president is.
- 44:28They've alluded to him the whole movie.
- 44:30Yeah. No recollection.
- 44:31Yeah, no idea. It's revealed that it's Sir Ben
- 44:35Kingsley. Yes, Cosmo himself.
- 44:38I did not even see his name in the opening credits the first
- 44:40time. It is there.
- 44:42OK. So I'm glad I missed it the
- 44:44first time. It's a real treat.
- 44:45It was. I got lucky there because this
- 44:48is just a guy that you want, like a Richard Dreyfus showing
- 44:51up. Good presence.
- 44:53Always delivers, yeah, especially in political forum.
- 44:56Like that's a good place for him.
- 44:57Political theatre sneakers where?
- 45:00Because his name is at the front credit.
- 45:03You'd be best if they didn't. A little bit, you know, it would
- 45:05be smart to to keep him off the books, if you will, exactly so
- 45:09that when he does arrive, because sneakers are the same.
- 45:11It's like I've been watching a movie for an hour.
- 45:14Gotta be who could it be but him, right?
- 45:16And feels like a little bit here where it's like, OK, we're now
- 45:19we're in. Where's the well?
- 45:20Yeah, you get so excited seeing him on the screen.
- 45:23You can maybe ignore that as accent work isn't great
- 45:25according to you. That's right.
- 45:26Well, certainly not in that. This is fine.
- 45:29Absolutely. He's great.
- 45:31Yeah. We kind of established that he's
- 45:32a good guy. He's been maligned through Bob
- 45:35and trying to paint a picture of him and here he's being
- 45:39friendly. I can't believe you put this on
- 45:41me. He sets himself up as a decent
- 45:42human being. All he has left is his
- 45:44integrity. That's right.
- 45:45And similar to the homeless Bill, yes.
- 45:48Dave's going to take care of it. Yeah, he's got an idea.
- 45:52He's got something brewing. He's got a couple of tabs open
- 45:56himself. Yes, exactly.
- 45:59This is the point where Jay Leno makes a couple cracks.
- 46:01Yes, he's incorrigible. Yeah, luckily Kingsley likes the
- 46:05program. Yes.
- 46:07That gets dropped here as well. The jobs program.
- 46:09That's important for Dave to know.
- 46:10I think that's right. Yeah.
- 46:11It establishes that it's going to be in good hands, right, Once
- 46:15the plan goes into effect. I think this is where they find
- 46:18out he was a shoe salesman. Yes, they have a nice teta tet.
- 46:21I think to use your words, that's right, because he needs
- 46:23to find out that he's a good guy.
- 46:25And I think he asks Sigourney Weaver character.
- 46:28Yeah, just to confirm. Yeah, you're just because he's
- 46:31been polluted like he doesn't know and they've gotten in his
- 46:33head obviously. So that establishes that.
- 46:35And by getting an actor of the caliber of Kingsley does some of
- 46:39that work already. I mean, Kingsley can play some
- 46:43mean bastards if you ever seen Sexy Beast, but he's really like
- 46:46a monster in that movie, OK, But generally he's just good enough
- 46:50to pull off whatever it is that you want from him.
- 46:51And in this it's just be a decent guy and I think he does
- 46:54that well. And we got Dave, who's master
- 46:57plan effectively is to explain everything.
- 47:00And I think the way that they turn that screw is pretty darn
- 47:04good. Bob's already made his
- 47:06accusations or whatever. He's got Ben Stein on his side,
- 47:09though. That's right.
- 47:10That's the guy who won your corner.
- 47:11Just saying. Ben Stein loved Richard Nixon,
- 47:13so maybe not so. OK, great game show.
- 47:16Yeah, he and Jimmy. Jimmy.
- 47:17Yeah, I would have thought so. That is a scene where I think
- 47:20it's very clever the way that they get out of this.
- 47:22You gets to say all the things he needs to say about how he's
- 47:24complicit and how yadda yadda yadda implicates himself and the
- 47:28others. And then collapses.
- 47:30That works out perfect for this movie, I think.
- 47:33I believe I had two thoughts of which way they're gonna go, and
- 47:36this was definitely one of them. And I think it's played really
- 47:38well. Yeah, I wondered about.
- 47:40He's great at faking strokes too.
- 47:42Yeah, for sure. And Alan has got all the stuff
- 47:44to expose Bob. That's right.
- 47:46So that really tied it together for me.
- 47:48Like they have all that proof all the boxes are getting
- 47:50checked here to that this is how it would play out.
- 47:53For sure. And then Dave gets escorted
- 47:55away. Now my question around that
- 47:58because he basically gets taken back to his office.
- 48:00We Fast forward a little bit of time.
- 48:01It's. I literally fast forwarded it
- 48:03like I know it's gonna happen, I figured it out.
- 48:05I get. It we established Dave is
- 48:07running for local office, Murray's working with him.
- 48:11He's now got a staff of all his other people.
- 48:13Sigourney Weaver is coming in and but my thought is this guy
- 48:18looks exactly like the dead president and I don't care
- 48:22because I really like the way this movie ends and we'll get
- 48:25into do you more specifically. OK.
- 48:27But toothpaste is not going back in the bottle.
- 48:30That's going to be tricky. And then especially when.
- 48:32They heard that one before. First Lady is a part of the
- 48:35equation. It starts to get a little bit
- 48:37giffy. It does.
- 48:38Yeah, I thought you might. Have a problem with this so I'm
- 48:40trying to tee it up. Let me chime in please.
- 48:43I definitely felt that it should have ended him with him walking.
- 48:46Off along with the briefcase. And maybe having the VP move
- 48:51forward with the homeless bill. Sure.
- 48:52And that's it for me, OK, this romance between him and
- 48:56Sigourney. And friendship with Bing.
- 48:58Hey buddy, we'll get there. Put a pin.
- 49:00Now I know my wife would love to find a better version of me.
- 49:04She's actually said that word for word.
- 49:09But to your point, looking identical to the president
- 49:13running for office at some level doesn't matter.
- 49:16And her coming back did not sit well with me and the kiss.
- 49:20Too many questions, do you? Think we don't need it?
- 49:22Luckily for me, the movie has already ended, so it doesn't
- 49:25really take away from the overall experience what I did
- 49:29like, though there's some There's a good take away here.
- 49:32I brought up a couple times with Duane Stephenson, him and Dave
- 49:36sort of building this relationship.
- 49:38Sandwiches and whatnot. Exactly.
- 49:40He's just the Secret Service guy.
- 49:41Sure. It's revealed earlier in the
- 49:43ambulance that he would take a bullet.
- 49:45For now, I don't know if that moment is necessarily earned.
- 49:50OK, I know they tried to do it. There's one part where he's like
- 49:53pointing him out in pictures and there's you in the background.
- 49:56I love that. Cute, but I'm.
- 49:58Always looking for something in the background.
- 49:59That's why that guy, I know him exactly.
- 50:04The final shot is him. Yep.
- 50:05And I don't mind that part of it.
- 50:07But as an ending, overall, I'm like, Nah, let down, yeah.
- 50:11Not like I am Andrew Sheppard and I am the president, yeah.
- 50:14But it doesn't ruin it for me. Good.
- 50:16We don't want to come all that way just for it to be ruined.
- 50:19I mean, I don't mind it. I agree with you that it does
- 50:21sort of spark a question or two. You do recognize.
- 50:24Doesn't really make a lot of, you know, the future of this
- 50:26relationship is maybe in question.
- 50:28It's ending on that way because this movie is more romantic
- 50:32comedy than something like the American President.
- 50:36It's a little more dramatically tipped and a little bit more
- 50:38realistically based. I know sometimes you don't like
- 50:42the fact that they get together. Like the forced romance.
- 50:44Sure, absolutely. You've set up several times.
- 50:46Absolutely. It's one of my yes, I agree.
- 50:48But you're OK with this? One, yeah, it's because I'm not
- 50:51thinking about it beyond this moment and it doesn't feel
- 50:54rushed. It's more like logistics that I
- 50:56feel a problem. She is in love with a good man,
- 50:58or at least some of that was once a good man.
- 51:01And Dave is a good guy, we've established.
- 51:03It's kind of creepy. Though, so it is a little odd.
- 51:05Yes, conspiracy theorists would love.
- 51:08You know what I mean? Sure, it eat it up.
- 51:10David, my friend, what are your final thoughts on the movie?
- 51:13Can you summarize it? Can you distill it?
- 51:15I think. I think close all the pins.
- 51:17Did I bring it home right? Yeah, I think.
- 51:19I think I closed all of them. If not, forgive me.
- 51:22My finishing thoughts though, is this movie for me didn't carry
- 51:27necessarily the emotional punch that American President did.
- 51:31To compare that because you kind of have to.
- 51:33But there are solid performances.
- 51:35The story is interesting enough and it never had me say oh
- 51:39please. Sure.
- 51:41Which I think is a win for this type of movie.
- 51:44I have some other stuff written here that I've already addressed
- 51:50about the ending, about Vin Raines, Sure.
- 51:53So I checked those boxes. I don't think it's shelf worthy.
- 51:56OK, for me, I wasn't really excited to watch it the second
- 52:00time. OK.
- 52:02Did this movie gain any esteem for you?
- 52:05Is it better than your original watch?
- 52:06I didn't ask you at the beginning, like how many times
- 52:08you've gone back to the well on this movie.
- 52:10How are you feeling now, Phil? I haven't watched it a lot.
- 52:13I remember really, really like, you know, 93, four whenever it
- 52:17came out on video, but I haven't probably seen it in 20 years.
- 52:20OK, you're not going to go back to it every.
- 52:22Month and what I remember most about it, or maybe what I
- 52:26discovered most about it in this rewatch, is it was a lot less
- 52:30funny that I remembered. It OK, Yeah, it wasn't
- 52:33incredibly. Hilarious, no.
- 52:34And I think when in 93 four, I thought it was funny, like I
- 52:37really laughed a lot of memory. So it didn't live up to that
- 52:41standard, let's say, and I agree with you, that the American
- 52:43president took the oxygen in the room.
- 52:46I was going to say the wind out of the.
- 52:47Sails wind out of the sails a little bit, only in a
- 52:50comparative sense. So if you strip that away, what
- 52:54this movie is doing is something completely different than what
- 52:56the American president is doing. And so it is unfair to this to
- 53:00compare. It that's why I try not to.
- 53:02When I respect it has to be for the purpose of this show or this
- 53:05conversation because we did it so recently, but I think it does
- 53:10this movie a disservice and it pales a little bit in
- 53:12comparison. I thought the romance piece
- 53:14works well enough. OK.
- 53:16And I thought that the government slash politics side,
- 53:20though not as front bearing as the American president.
- 53:24What I'm saying it's hard not. To.
- 53:26I think does that very well in as much as it conveys the scope
- 53:31and the size of it and the awe of it at a time when, honestly,
- 53:36it's been so diminished and demoralized and stripped of any
- 53:40dignity over the last few years. So watching this and watching a
- 53:44layperson like Dave Kovic, yeah, another nice break, right?
- 53:47That's it. Be in awe of the office rather
- 53:50than just manipulating the office and this and that.
- 53:52That felt hitting a sweet spot in these last few months, so I
- 53:56was happy to revisit. I own the movie.
- 53:58It's not coming off the shelf necessarily.
- 53:59I haven't brought anything to replace it.
- 54:01That's right. But it is something that I
- 54:03probably will take a while to watch again.
- 54:05There are more funny movies that are better romance, and there's
- 54:07better political movies. Yeah, just just everything just
- 54:10a little bit better. Yeah, it's categories.
- 54:12I just think if I'm looking for a particular craving, this one
- 54:14might not fill it. Well, that's very honest.
