- 0:02Speaker 1: In the weeds powered by Arena Club. I mean, the
- 0:06Speaker 1: most popular card in the marketplace is Sho Tani. Right,
- 0:12Speaker 1: why are there not more show? Hey Otani's let's just
- 0:14Speaker 1: start their period because.
- 0:15Speaker 2: It's really impossible, almost impossible to do. Okay, But that's
- 0:19Speaker 2: why there hasn't been any Babe Ruth. One hundred years.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Ago, Donnie Joseph wrote an article in The Athletic about
- 0:27Speaker 1: how Otani was supposed to usher in a two way
- 0:29Speaker 1: player revolution, and included in the article is that rule
- 0:32Speaker 1: change that might be preventing it, which we'll get into
- 0:35Speaker 1: in a second. I just want to preface what I
- 0:36Speaker 1: said when I say Otani, I mean anybody that can
- 0:41Speaker 1: pitch and hit in the big leagues not be a
- 0:43Speaker 1: superstar at both. It's too hard to even get It's
- 0:48Speaker 1: too hard an average player.
- 0:50Speaker 2: It's too hard.
- 0:52Speaker 1: You think that's the only way.
- 0:53Speaker 2: One can't recover enough. And the guys who have tried
- 0:56Speaker 2: to do it, like remember Brooks Kishnik back in the day,
- 0:58Speaker 2: he tried to do it, but he was a reliever,
- 1:00Speaker 2: remember him, like, he.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Tried to fine though. I mean Michael Lorenzen is a
- 1:03Speaker 1: more recent example, but he couldn't do it.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Either I mean, because you either don't pitch well enough
- 1:08Speaker 2: or you don't hit well enough. There's there's one guy,
- 1:11Speaker 2: that guy right there, Shoo Tani, that can do both.
- 1:13Speaker 2: He's he's the only one I've ever seen that was
- 1:15Speaker 2: able to do both. Either you get hurt and you
- 1:18Speaker 2: can't hit, or you get hurt and you can't pitch
- 1:20Speaker 2: and you're too tired. Plus nobody else is six five,
- 1:23Speaker 2: two forty or whatever that show a and runs like
- 1:25Speaker 2: a deer and is just the super athletes. Like, there's
- 1:28Speaker 2: one this guy when we like when we say he's
- 1:30Speaker 2: a unicorn, This dude is a unicorn. He is one
- 1:34Speaker 2: of one. There's one guy and his name is shoe
- 1:36Speaker 2: Heo Tani. And there have been others of Brenda McKay.
- 1:40Speaker 2: He was drafted as a two way guy. He got
- 1:42Speaker 2: hurt a lot. All these guys have tried it, Yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 2: but one of them isn't good enough. There's one guy
- 1:47Speaker 2: that can do this. There's been two guys in the
- 1:49Speaker 2: history of baseball do this. Bay Ruth who didn't really
- 1:52Speaker 2: pitch and hit at the same time. He pitched and
- 1:54Speaker 2: then he hit kind of and then show Heo TONI.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Other than that that's been hit. Nobody else can do this.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's a it's all, it's next to impossible to do this.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Guys frequently it's too hard. Obviously in college, but then
- 2:05Speaker 1: even in the pros. I mean there's recent guys. Jack
- 2:08Speaker 1: Kaglion was a star in college.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Jack Kaglean is a I'm a Gator fan. I watch
- 2:14Speaker 2: Jack kagly on play almost every game. He wasn't a pitcher.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He was a hitter.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I mean he threw hard, he could he could throw
- 2:21Speaker 2: kind of hard through well, but he didn't throw a
- 2:22Speaker 2: lot of strikes, right, I mean, he was a good
- 2:25Speaker 2: college pitcher, right, he was. He was an above average
- 2:27Speaker 2: college pitcher. But what is he What can he be
- 2:30Speaker 2: as a big league He could be a fifty homer
- 2:32Speaker 2: guy for a forty to fifty homer guy every year,
- 2:35Speaker 2: That's what they what happens is Team C one. They said,
- 2:38Speaker 2: well if he can, if you they go to these
- 2:39Speaker 2: players and they say, hey, Jack, you could be a
- 2:41Speaker 2: forty to homer guy every year, or you could be
- 2:44Speaker 2: a twenty homer guy and a seven and seven pitcher
- 2:47Speaker 2: every year? Which one would you rather be? And he's like,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I'll take the forty homers in five hundred million check please.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I'll add one to you, and if you make a decision,
- 2:56Speaker 1: you will be in the big league significantly. Quicker example
- 2:59Speaker 1: right now now, Nolan McLean, he was a two way
- 3:02Speaker 1: player in the pros. They're like, you should pitch, you'll
- 3:04Speaker 1: be up pretty quick. Boom, he's up for the mats.
- 3:08Speaker 3: I've never seen Nolan McLean play the field. I've seen
- 3:11Speaker 3: Brendan McKay when they first when he first came up
- 3:14Speaker 3: and cron Zone. I faced Cronzone in the minor leagues.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I faced him back to back nights. Came out of bullpen.
- 3:22Speaker 3: The first night he opened. The second night he came
- 3:25Speaker 3: out of the He came out of a bullpen. He opened,
- 3:28Speaker 3: he was ninety four to ninety six.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I think.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Whacked him because I didn't whack him, but straight heater.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Next night he comes out, he was ninety one to
- 3:40Speaker 3: ninety three. He played the rest of the game at
- 3:43Speaker 3: second base, the night before at shortstop, I think, and
- 3:46Speaker 3: then he played the next game at shortstop, and then
- 3:49Speaker 3: he came Then he came in and pitched like it's
- 3:52Speaker 3: a It is hard to do. Yesterday, AJ was talking
- 3:56Speaker 3: about how banana ball is like good baseball. There are
- 4:00Speaker 3: people who can do really good baseball things. In a
- 4:03Speaker 3: banana ball game. Two way guys, they can do really
- 4:06Speaker 3: good baseball things. Jake Croninworth hit ninety six on the
- 4:10Speaker 3: radar gun in the game I saw him. Brendan McKay
- 4:13Speaker 3: threw left handed. His swing was good. But the big
- 4:18Speaker 3: leagues are that much better. The big leagues, you have
- 4:22Speaker 3: to be that much better to play the position you're
- 4:26Speaker 3: playing that day, and to have to do that at
- 4:29Speaker 3: two positions, it doesn't happen. It just doesn't happen. It's
- 4:33Speaker 3: too hard. And in my opinion, they shouldn't have a
- 4:36Speaker 3: rule that's league wide that affects one player one player.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That's what this article is about. So let's dive into
- 4:45Speaker 1: that for part two of this discussion. So this article said,
- 4:48Speaker 1: starting in twenty twenty, the Otani Rule altered who qualified
- 4:51Speaker 1: to have two way classification on an official roster. To
- 4:55Speaker 1: officially get that distinction, a pitcher or player would need
- 4:58Speaker 1: to pitch in twenty innings and play at least twenty
- 5:01Speaker 1: MLB games as a position player or a DH with
- 5:03Speaker 1: at least three played appearances in each game, and either
- 5:05Speaker 1: the current or previous season. That matters because, of course,
- 5:09Speaker 1: if you're a two way player, it doesn't count towards
- 5:11Speaker 1: the limit of thirteen pitchers on a twenty six man roster.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Jake Croninworth is quoted in this story saying that held
- 5:17Speaker 1: him back. He said, he got reps pitching in Triple
- 5:19Speaker 1: A like Crats is talking about through bullpen sessions when
- 5:22Speaker 1: he was acquired by the Padres. But he said, quote,
- 5:25Speaker 1: why does somebody need to qualify for something they've already
- 5:28Speaker 1: proven they can do in college or the minor leagues,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and all of a sudden they have to qualify to
- 5:31Speaker 1: do it in the major leagues. To me, that doesn't
- 5:34Speaker 1: make any sense. Now you're taking away this guy's natural
- 5:36Speaker 1: ability to do two things at a high level, and
- 5:38Speaker 1: now you have to make them basically earn it again.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So he said, And outside of getting the two way classification,
- 5:45Speaker 1: the only way a hitter can pitch in a game
- 5:48Speaker 1: or vice versa would be in a game that goes
- 5:49Speaker 1: to extras or when their team's either winning or trailing
- 5:51Speaker 1: by six runs or more in a contest. That's when
- 5:53Speaker 1: we see the position players pop up. So Cronenworth said,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you could go four games where you have that, you
- 5:57Speaker 1: could go three weeks where you never have that. So
- 5:59Speaker 1: you're getting put on the roster is a hitter, but
- 6:01Speaker 1: you're a two way guy. You can only pitch in
- 6:03Speaker 1: certain situations. So if you put a guy on the
- 6:05Speaker 1: roster as a pitcher, you're now taking away that bullpen spot,
- 6:08Speaker 1: which is critical to teams. I'm adding that part and
- 6:10Speaker 1: then corona Work said that was really the thing that
- 6:12Speaker 1: hurt all the two way guys.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Makes sense. What he's saying makes sense. They made this
- 6:18Speaker 2: role for the show. Hey, right, they made this rule
- 6:21Speaker 2: for show, Hay, is it right? Not if it if
- 6:24Speaker 2: it's affecting other people from being able to do it,
- 6:27Speaker 2: that's what so they would have Like what they're saying
- 6:30Speaker 2: basically is corona Worth had to be designated a two
- 6:32Speaker 2: way guy, but because he didn't qualify with enough innings
- 6:36Speaker 2: or on the mound, then he would count as a
- 6:39Speaker 2: pitcher and a hitter. And you're really only playing twenty
- 6:41Speaker 2: five against twenty six is basically what they're playing in
- 6:44Speaker 2: a pitcher short, which is the bigger problem.
- 6:46Speaker 1: No team wants to do that team wants to guys up,
- 6:50Speaker 1: so they're like, hey, go this route go that route.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Now they change that rule though after a Taani missed
- 6:55Speaker 2: the year last year.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Didn't they change They tweaked it again to say what
- 6:58Speaker 1: it was for this year or the year before or
- 7:01Speaker 1: something like that. Right, so he counted multiple spots. They
- 7:04Speaker 1: are making it an Otani rule. But this case is, hey,
- 7:08Speaker 1: you're hurting us. Now. We don't have proof that someone's saying, hey,
- 7:12Speaker 1: we're not going to groom this guy as a starter
- 7:14Speaker 1: or as a pitcher and a position player because of
- 7:17Speaker 1: this rule. But I think it's a valid point from Croninworth.
- 7:20Speaker 1: You're put in a tough position to actually get this status.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And if you're a superstar, who cares, You're going to
- 7:25Speaker 1: rack that up in five seconds. But if not. Kratz,
- 7:27Speaker 1: the only other thing he brought up is you gonna
- 7:29Speaker 1: have your bench guy who comes in makes a start,
- 7:31Speaker 1: sometimes pinch hitter at the end of the game, also
- 7:33Speaker 1: available in the bullpen. So now you kind of have
- 7:35Speaker 1: this super utility bench guy playing one hundred and fifty
- 7:37Speaker 1: games a year, some as a pitcher, some as a hitter.
- 7:39Speaker 1: He said that would be the next best thing. But
- 7:41Speaker 1: I read that, I'm like, damn, how are you gonna
- 7:43Speaker 1: find a guy that's doing that. That's not easy.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Either, because he's not coming in to pitch any high
- 7:49Speaker 3: leverage games because then he wants to get his seventy
- 7:52Speaker 3: appearances out of the bullpen so he can get paid.
- 7:55Speaker 3: It's not like like as a backup. Like I think
- 7:58Speaker 3: somewhere in there you have a backup catcher Lorenzen. He
- 8:01Speaker 3: would come in and play left field. I remember when
- 8:03Speaker 3: he was with the Reds and but he was definitely
- 8:07Speaker 3: a pitcher. He just got some good swings off and
- 8:09Speaker 3: hit some dingers. But like let's say a backup catcher,
- 8:13Speaker 3: he's probably not that good of a hitter. He'd be
- 8:15Speaker 3: the starting catcher. He comes in pitches now, all of
- 8:19Speaker 3: a sudden, he's throwing. At this day and age, you
- 8:22Speaker 3: can't come in and throw anything less than ninety seven
- 8:25Speaker 3: if you're coming in a game in useful spots. Now
- 8:28Speaker 3: it's like, well, why don't you just pitch all the
- 8:29Speaker 3: time because you stink as a hitter. So to me,
- 8:33Speaker 3: it inhibits. This rule is only helping Otani really, but
- 8:38Speaker 3: to me it's pointless. To me, it's a it's doesn't
- 8:42Speaker 3: it's hurting more people than it's helping, and the few
- 8:45Speaker 3: people that it's hurting. It's so silly that it's getting
- 8:48Speaker 3: in their way.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So will we get a two way player unless it's
- 8:54Speaker 1: a superstar. Can you get a more mid two way player?
- 8:58Speaker 1: It's gotta be super or starts worth.
- 9:01Speaker 2: How do you get to the point though, where you
- 9:02Speaker 2: count as only one player? Because you have to be
- 9:04Speaker 2: able to pitch in enough games right to get to
- 9:07Speaker 2: that point, and those games don't happen enough in a
- 9:08Speaker 2: regular season, So how would you ever get to that point?
- 9:11Speaker 2: They should Here's what they should happen. They should make Yes,
- 9:14Speaker 2: the rule is fine if they want to have this rule,
- 9:15Speaker 2: but there should be like when a guy comes up,
- 9:18Speaker 2: all right, he's a two way guy, and you get
- 9:20Speaker 2: a year or two to get this numbers right, to
- 9:23Speaker 2: get these numbers under his feet so he can then
- 9:26Speaker 2: carry this over. But in order just to say you
- 9:28Speaker 2: have to do this your first year, it's not gonna
- 9:31Speaker 2: happen because the team doesn't want to lose to be
- 9:33Speaker 2: down a pitcher.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Wait, I actually like this. You incentivize teams to promote
- 9:39Speaker 1: two way plays, that's what they want to do, and say, hey,
- 9:41Speaker 1: you get a two way player spot, even if that
- 9:43Speaker 1: player doesn't end up working out. At least you gave
- 9:45Speaker 1: it a shot, and that player has to participate an
- 9:47Speaker 1: x amount of every team.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yes, I like that, but the pitcher has to pitch.
- 9:53Speaker 4: The guy has to pitch.
- 9:54Speaker 1: You have to do both otherwise you're cheating the system.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yes, he has to pitch.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a little complicated, but I like it because
- 10:00Speaker 1: it would incentivize teams to get that extra spot if
- 10:04Speaker 1: they're actually.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Because nobody can get to those innings limits. Because if
- 10:07Speaker 2: you can't, if you're not designated to way impossible. That's
- 10:10Speaker 2: what I'm saying, it's impossible to ever get there. So
- 10:12Speaker 2: Showy is the only guy that could ever do it
- 10:14Speaker 2: well because they made this rule after he.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Was already there.
- 10:16Speaker 1: No, but also with show Hey, let's say he's starting
- 10:18Speaker 1: from scratch. He's like when he starts his career, he's
- 10:21Speaker 1: in the rotation, so he's going to rack up the innings.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And then he's also dhing, so he's racking.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Up, but the team is playing down a position a
- 10:32Speaker 2: picture that for the wall. He's just on the roster. Well,
- 10:34Speaker 2: he threw it as a rotation member, but they're still
- 10:37Speaker 2: down a picture. Right with the rule, now, they don't
- 10:41Speaker 2: lose the picture. You can only have thirteen pictures, right,
- 10:44Speaker 2: so he'd have to be designated a picture.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:47Speaker 2: But let's then they're they're playing with thirteen right.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but let's say let's says let's use.
- 10:53Speaker 2: That Tony, let's use let's we'll use Corona one. Crona
- 10:56Speaker 2: was a starting pitcher, yepka in the rotation, in the rotation, right,
- 10:59Speaker 2: but then you know he's hitting or whatever however they
- 11:01Speaker 2: want to use him. But then they then they're basically
- 11:04Speaker 2: down a position player of those games he pitches, because
- 11:08Speaker 2: he can't if he's pitching, they usually don't take the
- 11:10Speaker 2: pitcher and put him in at second base or outfield
- 11:13Speaker 2: or shortstop or wherever they want to put him for
- 11:15Speaker 2: that game, first base because they're like, oh, he's got
- 11:18Speaker 2: to get his arm stuff in. That's why Otani pitcher.
- 11:21Speaker 2: The DH is fine, right, but there's still down a
- 11:25Speaker 2: pitcher because let's you know, if he's if they want
- 11:29Speaker 2: to use Lorenzo and we use Lorenza, if he's a reliever,
- 11:31Speaker 2: then your really reliever is more complicated.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Rotation makes sense. I mean, if you have a five
- 11:38Speaker 1: man rotor, there's very.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Few guys that can hit well enough though to justify
- 11:41Speaker 2: pitching once every fifth or sixth day and then playing
- 11:44Speaker 2: the field every four other four days.
- 11:45Speaker 4: You have very few people that can do.
- 11:47Speaker 1: The concept is if he's a starter, Crats, you have
- 11:50Speaker 1: a five man rotation. That picture counts right until he
- 11:53Speaker 1: classifies as a DH. So so MLB is looking at
- 11:56Speaker 1: it as hey, you've got your five, there's your five.
- 11:58Speaker 1: He's included in your five, and then you have your
- 12:02Speaker 1: your thirteen pitcher max right, so you have your eight relievers.
- 12:05Speaker 1: So they're saying you're getting dinged a little bit, but
- 12:08Speaker 1: not really. I mean you're going to get the advantage. Really,
- 12:10Speaker 1: it creates an advantage. So if you're in the rotation,
- 12:13Speaker 1: you do your twenty innings or whatever, it is, now
- 12:15Speaker 1: your two way player. Now you get to add another reliever.
- 12:18Speaker 1: So it actually does incentivize the teams a little bit.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Right now, Not really am I getting this, Red Crats?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Where are you on this?
- 12:26Speaker 3: I think it gets in the way. If this is
- 12:29Speaker 3: something major League Baseball really wants to me, the rule is.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Getting in the way. You have you have to drop,
- 12:34Speaker 4: you have to.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Lower the amount of innings because it's going to take
- 12:37Speaker 3: somebody it's going to take somebody a lot of time
- 12:41Speaker 3: to rack up twenty innings.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Jars story, but as a reliever.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But it's not. It's not happening.
- 12:49Speaker 2: So the big leagues, it's the big leagues.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 12:53Speaker 1: No, I'm saying it's a month.
- 12:54Speaker 2: It's a month's you're losing a month of a player.
- 12:58Speaker 4: I agree.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Didn't Lorenzen promote this in the offseason saying that he
- 13:03Speaker 1: could do that. He would, he would, he.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Would jump right in, he'd have his twenty innings already.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So okay. I found it when when he was pitching
- 13:16Speaker 1: himself as a two way player, he said, I can
- 13:18Speaker 1: log twenty games, three played appearances each of those games
- 13:21Speaker 1: as a position player or DH. Then I can become
- 13:23Speaker 1: a fourteenth pitcher on your roster because at that point
- 13:25Speaker 1: it doesn't count against the roster limit, and that a
- 13:29Speaker 1: non contender can do that and then trade him to
- 13:31Speaker 1: a contender. Obviously you'd have to do that beginning of
- 13:34Speaker 1: the season, and no team's going to be like besides,
- 13:36Speaker 1: three of them are going to be like, okay, we'll
- 13:38Speaker 1: just do this and eat the at bats. But it's
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's a cool concept. I remember we covered it. You
- 13:45Speaker 1: remember we talked about it in the off season. I
- 13:46Speaker 1: think they should change it toward teams. Every team gets
- 13:49Speaker 1: a grace period on a two way player, right, Crotchy like,
- 13:52Speaker 1: just say, hey, why do you want to have a
- 13:54Speaker 1: two way player? Yeah, if they want to incentivize it,
- 13:57Speaker 1: then do it like that. Make it to where's it's
- 13:59Speaker 1: incentivized from the team to do it, not just yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 1: make it easier, make it easier. It might happen.
- 14:06Speaker 3: People want to see Jack Kagleon throw ninety seven miles
- 14:08Speaker 3: an hour from the left side. Honestly, they don't know
- 14:11Speaker 3: the intricacies of the fact that he can't locate his
- 14:13Speaker 3: fastball as well as a big league pitcher. Should they
- 14:17Speaker 3: want to see ninety seven. They're like, well, that dude
- 14:19Speaker 3: just hit a four hundred and fifty foot digger. Now
- 14:21Speaker 3: he's throwing ninety seven to me. Let everybody have it.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Maybe some teams will take advantage of it, but everybody's
- 14:28Speaker 3: at the same everybody's at the same on the same level.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Right now, it's getting in the way of the three
- 14:36Speaker 3: or four guys that possibly could do it at a
- 14:39Speaker 3: big league level.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Okay, anyway, good discussion. If you're watching this afterwards. Let
- 14:45Speaker 1: us know your thoughts in the comments. I don't we
- 14:47Speaker 1: don't need the trolling. Just what would you do to
- 14:52Speaker 1: get more to a players into the show. That's what
- 14:55Speaker 1: I'd like to see in the comments. Anyway, we showed
- 14:58Speaker 1: you some time, a little bit of Jack cagleon and
- 15:03Speaker 1: many more. Best cards in the marketplace one spot Arena

- 15:12Speaker 1: And yes, for those of you that asked you, you
- 15:14Speaker 1: can get the card sent to you itself, or you
- 15:15Speaker 1: can buy, sell, trade, do the whole thing, or your
- 15:17Speaker 1: first lab pack twenty percent off with code foul. Dallas
- 15:20Speaker 1: Morning News Rangers beat right at Evan Grant back with
- 15:22Speaker 1: us having good to see you, but not good times
- 15:25Speaker 1: for the Rangers. When I get right to biz this
- 15:27Speaker 1: time is this it? We're gonna do a little rip
- 15:30Speaker 1: twenty twenty five Rangers pretty soon we.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Could at the end of this week. I mean, look,
- 15:35Speaker 5: they're six on the wild card race, if you want
- 15:39Speaker 5: to say that, they're in the race, and they've got
- 15:41Speaker 5: a series here at Kansas City and a series home
- 15:43Speaker 5: against Cleveland. The two teams that are directly ahead of
- 15:46Speaker 5: them to try and get to the fourth spot in
- 15:49Speaker 5: the wildcard race. And look, for the last two years,
- 15:53Speaker 5: this team has not played well on the road. It's
- 15:55Speaker 5: not played well against winning teams, and so they've got
- 15:59Speaker 5: their work out for him this week, and first time
- 16:01Speaker 5: out on Monday, they didn't really show up all that
- 16:05Speaker 5: well against Kansas City.
- 16:08Speaker 1: There you go. So Texas six games back of whatever
- 16:13Speaker 1: you want to call it. I mean the Yanks, Red
- 16:15Speaker 1: Sox and Seattle in a similar spot as you can
- 16:17Speaker 1: see on the screen, but Kansas City and Cleveland to
- 16:19Speaker 1: jump through. Like Evan is mentioning, So what's the main
- 16:23Speaker 1: problem here? Where are we at? Or is it the
- 16:25Speaker 1: same problem we've been talking about all year.
- 16:28Speaker 5: All year for two years, Scott. I mean it's the offense, right,
- 16:31Speaker 5: This offense is not produced. Whatever the Rangers attempts to
- 16:35Speaker 5: fix the offense this offseason have not produced. You look
- 16:39Speaker 5: up this lineup. If you look at Sunday's lineups and
- 16:43Speaker 5: the Rangers facing off against Toronto, I think the Blue
- 16:46Speaker 5: Jays first six hitters had ops's of seven to fifty
- 16:51Speaker 5: or better. The Rangers had one hitter in their lineup
- 16:54Speaker 5: with an OPS of better than seven to fifty, and
- 16:56Speaker 5: so there's been too much volatility in the lineup. There's
- 16:59Speaker 5: been too many guys you have been in prolonged and
- 17:04Speaker 5: steady declines and there haven't been a whole bunch of
- 17:08Speaker 5: bounce back years for guys who had four years last year.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Is this what is this the end of what? Is
- 17:15Speaker 3: this the end of the seasons? You know they're cooked,
- 17:19Speaker 3: they're not going to make the playoffs? Is this Boachi's end?
- 17:23Speaker 3: Is this the end of how this team is constructed offensively?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Eric?
- 17:30Speaker 5: I think those are all very valid questions. You know,
- 17:33Speaker 5: Boach put off the managerial question at the beginning of
- 17:37Speaker 5: the year, and that's not going to get answered until
- 17:40Speaker 5: this season is over. That's just not the way he operates.
- 17:44Speaker 5: But when you start talking about the construction of this team,
- 17:47Speaker 5: I think there's a lot of questions that the Rangers
- 17:49Speaker 5: have to start addressing for the future. You've got two guys,
- 17:53Speaker 5: you know, Dolas Garcia and Jonahanan, who're both arbitration eligible
- 17:57Speaker 5: and who were both in the bottom can I believe
- 18:01Speaker 5: it is in ops over the past two years. So
- 18:04Speaker 5: I expect both of those guys to not be in
- 18:06Speaker 5: the picture next year. That's two holes you've got to fill.
- 18:10Speaker 5: As you guys just showed a tweet from last night.
- 18:13Speaker 5: Josh Young, who's going into arbitration and really has kind
- 18:17Speaker 5: of been the sign post for what was a renewed
- 18:21Speaker 5: farm system when he was taken in twenty nineteen in
- 18:25Speaker 5: the first round. He's sitting in the middle of the
- 18:28Speaker 5: most critical week of the season being replaced by Cody
- 18:30Speaker 5: Freeman at third base. Brings some energy to the team,
- 18:35Speaker 5: but he's got five big league games to under his belt,
- 18:38Speaker 5: so I think this is a real kind of come
- 18:40Speaker 5: to Jesus moment for Josh Young in his development. And
- 18:43Speaker 5: we can go around the field one guy after another.
- 18:46Speaker 5: You know, Wyatt Langford I think is still a star
- 18:49Speaker 5: in the making, but he's had he's gone kind of
- 18:51Speaker 5: through a sophomore slump to some extent. Evan Carter, I
- 18:55Speaker 5: think there's still some questions about whether or not he
- 18:58Speaker 5: can stay on the field to be an everyday starting
- 19:01Speaker 5: center fielder. Marcus Simeon is you know, we talk about
- 19:05Speaker 5: guys playing through stuff. Marcus Simeon plays through a lot
- 19:07Speaker 5: of stuff, but the decline is is pretty evident there
- 19:11Speaker 5: in his numbers over the last two years. So I
- 19:13Speaker 5: think there is a lot that the Rangers are going
- 19:15Speaker 5: to have to attack this offseason, and they may need
- 19:19Speaker 5: to attack it in the next week once this season
- 19:22Speaker 5: kind of comes to a conclusion in terms of being competitive.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Evan, I just did I had your game. You skipped
- 19:30Speaker 2: out last two weeks ago. Well I heard you were
- 19:33Speaker 2: going to be Yeah, I figured, no worry. I still
- 19:35Speaker 2: got barbecue without you. Thank you, Jared Sandler, Thank you, Jared.
- 19:38Speaker 2: You're the best. But I'll see I want to say this,
- 19:42Speaker 2: somebody has said to me after the game, look at
- 19:44Speaker 2: the look at the scoreboard.
- 19:45Speaker 4: There's a giant scoreboard at Global Life.
- 19:46Speaker 2: It's big as the biggest people's houses, right, And don't
- 19:50Speaker 2: look at the names, like you said, just look at
- 19:52Speaker 2: the ops's And it was like six fifty six seventy
- 19:55Speaker 2: seven oh two six forty and Seeger I think was
- 19:58Speaker 2: the only one that was seven fifty year above. The
- 20:00Speaker 2: rest were all in the six hundreds or low seven hundreds.
- 20:03Speaker 2: And they said, now tell me how that competes against.
- 20:05Speaker 2: And it was the Philly So you had Sharper Harper,
- 20:07Speaker 2: Castiano's turner Real Muto was like boom boom, boom, boom boom,
- 20:11Speaker 2: and you're like, Oh, one of these teams is really
- 20:13Speaker 2: good and the other team is really bad. Now they
- 20:15Speaker 2: brought in Bret Boone, They've tried to make some things happen,
- 20:18Speaker 2: but what just hasn't clicked. We talked last year about
- 20:21Speaker 2: the four team basketball. They couldn't hit that. But what changed?
- 20:23Speaker 2: Because two years ago this offense was unbelievable and now
- 20:26Speaker 2: all of a sudden, it's like it went away.
- 20:29Speaker 5: I think you've had a combination aj of some guys
- 20:31Speaker 5: having career years in twenty twenty three, which is necessary
- 20:34Speaker 5: for a team to win a World Series, right, You've
- 20:36Speaker 5: got to have some surprises. I think that was part
- 20:39Speaker 5: of it. And I think that there has been probably
- 20:42Speaker 5: more significant and steady decline from Aduls in Jonaheim and
- 20:49Speaker 5: the large part Marcus than the Rangers anticipated. On top
- 20:53Speaker 5: of that, it just does not feel like this team
- 20:56Speaker 5: has made progress in any of the areas that has
- 20:59Speaker 5: identified to attack right the forcing fastball is still an
- 21:04Speaker 5: issue for this team this year. The ability to hit
- 21:06Speaker 5: left handers is still an issue for this team this year.
- 21:09Speaker 5: And so this is a two year process now where
- 21:12Speaker 5: the Rangers haven't made a whole bunch of progress, and
- 21:15Speaker 5: that is where to me, it gets to a point
- 21:17Speaker 5: where you start to say, Okay, we've got to change
- 21:19Speaker 5: some directions here. We've got to look at what we
- 21:22Speaker 5: want to do with personnel, because maybe the personnel isn't
- 21:25Speaker 5: quite as as as productive as we anticipated they would be.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Can you hit on one of your tweets you talked
- 21:35Speaker 3: about adulis how fans are just so use the word vitual.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Could you hit on that a little bit about how
- 21:41Speaker 3: fans have gotten on a guy who helped bring a
- 21:45Speaker 3: World Series championship to their city.
- 21:48Speaker 5: Look chratzy. One of my big pet peeves on Twitter
- 21:51Speaker 5: is that fans like to just toss around DFA, you know,
- 21:53Speaker 5: DFA DFA option even if guys don't have options, and
- 21:59Speaker 5: the whole idea of the social media where people can
- 22:02Speaker 5: get angry and offer their opinions. I think sometimes it
- 22:08Speaker 5: just gets out of hand. And I know I'm just
- 22:10Speaker 5: screaming at clouds, but I do think you can say
- 22:13Speaker 5: that Adolas Garcia has underperformed, There's no question about that.
- 22:17Speaker 5: And you can say that Adolas Garcia's time with the
- 22:20Speaker 5: Rangers is probably coming to an end. But I think
- 22:22Speaker 5: you can do all of that if you need to
- 22:24Speaker 5: voice that opinion as a fan, I think you can
- 22:26Speaker 5: do all of that without ever, you know, making it personal.
- 22:31Speaker 5: And you know, when you talk about a team not
- 22:33Speaker 5: having the balls to show a guy the door, it
- 22:36Speaker 5: becomes it sounds a little bit personal. That's the other
- 22:39Speaker 5: big mystery about Twitter is somebody may just be offering
- 22:42Speaker 5: their opinion. It may just be the way they're talking
- 22:44Speaker 5: for the moment. They may not intend it to be personal,
- 22:46Speaker 5: but that's the tone that a lot of people can take.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Agreed. Agreed.
- 22:51Speaker 2: By the way, Bochi has that tone when I brought
- 22:53Speaker 2: your name up to him this last week, So I'm
- 22:55Speaker 2: just saying I I asked him what it was like
- 22:58Speaker 2: not having you there, and him and Rich right for
- 23:00Speaker 2: throwing a party, because they said, you want to ask
- 23:02Speaker 2: the dumb questions that you normally asked. So they were
- 23:04Speaker 2: happy you weren't there, unlike me, I was sad.
- 23:06Speaker 5: But listen, I've made a career out of asking dumb questions.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Aja FT fans, do you want to have confidence when
- 23:16Speaker 3: you go out in public? Absolutely, we can't all wear
- 23:18Speaker 3: a backwards hat like me, but you can get some
- 23:21Speaker 3: true classic fit shirts. It almost looks like, oh wow,
- 23:25Speaker 3: the shirt was tailored for me. Nope, it's every True Classic.
- 23:29Speaker 3: This john is soft, it is smooth, and it makes
- 23:33Speaker 3: you look a little jacked.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I'm just saying, and Crats, you are jacked and you
- 23:38Speaker 1: are spot on. True Classic is the spot to go
- 23:40Speaker 1: if someone's like, where do I get shirts? True Classic.
- 23:43Speaker 1: The colors are fantastic. They've sold over twenty five million
- 23:47Speaker 1: shirts to more than five million customers. Their shirts just
- 23:50Speaker 1: win the feel, the tailored look, the price. We all
- 23:54Speaker 1: wear True Classic on FT. I mean, cam Maven literally
- 23:57Speaker 1: can't say enough about them too. Next time we have
- 23:59Speaker 1: cam on hit up True Classic dot com slash foul,
- 24:02Speaker 1: give it a shot, upgrade your wardrobe and save on
- 24:05Speaker 1: True Classic at True Classic dot Com slash foul. That's
- 24:09Speaker 1: True Classic dot com slash fo u L.
- 24:13Speaker 2: All right, so here's what you mentioned. Jonaheim and Adolie
- 24:16Speaker 2: Scarcia kind of in the same breath of arbitration. What
- 24:19Speaker 2: happened to Jonaheim? I know he heard his risk two
- 24:21Speaker 2: years ago, but he was one of you could have
- 24:23Speaker 2: made an argument he was the best catcher in baseball.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Are close to a top two or three in twenty
- 24:28Speaker 2: twenty three.
- 24:29Speaker 5: Twenty twenty three All Star Game, and yeah, what happened. Well,
- 24:34Speaker 5: I mean, I think there's a couple of factors that
- 24:36Speaker 5: contributed to something.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:38Speaker 5: He did catch an awful lot in twenty three and
- 24:42Speaker 5: basically caught every evening of the postseason, and so that
- 24:44Speaker 5: was a heavy workload. And in twenty three he had
- 24:47Speaker 5: the risk is issue, which he came back from very quickly.
- 24:50Speaker 5: There was a thought that he might need surgery on
- 24:52Speaker 5: that ended up not needing surgery. But ever since then,
- 24:56Speaker 5: ever he had off season and another off season for
- 24:59Speaker 5: extra recovery time, he just has not produced. And I
- 25:03Speaker 5: don't know, the Rangers know that he's trying, even though
- 25:07Speaker 5: the body language on the field is kind of it's
- 25:11Speaker 5: it looks like a low energy kind of body language,
- 25:13Speaker 5: But the Rangers feel like he's putting the effort in.
- 25:16Speaker 5: I just feel like this is the classic guy who
- 25:19Speaker 5: had a career year at the right time for this team.
- 25:23Speaker 5: When when they got him from Oakland or what was
- 25:26Speaker 5: then Oakland, I think the Rangers felt this is the
- 25:28Speaker 5: guy who could catch eighty to one hundred games for
- 25:31Speaker 5: us and be you know, kind of that, Like I
- 25:34Speaker 5: don't want to say strong side platoon catcher, but a
- 25:37Speaker 5: little bit heavier than just a backup catcher, a guy
- 25:40Speaker 5: who split job, split time pretty evenly. Maybe that's his
- 25:45Speaker 5: best role. Maybe there's some soul searching that Jonah's got
- 25:49Speaker 5: to do about where exactly he stands in terms of
- 25:54Speaker 5: some swing decisions. But this is just a guy who
- 25:57Speaker 5: who has regressed. And you can make that case with
- 25:59Speaker 5: a Doles going into his mid thirties and with Marcus
- 26:02Speaker 5: going into his mid thirties. Jonah is not in that
- 26:05Speaker 5: same boat in terms of age. So that's been the
- 26:07Speaker 5: real I think that's been the real mystery. And look,
- 26:10Speaker 5: there's greater minds than the me trying to figure this out.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Bobby Wilson, as both you guys know, he cares about
- 26:16Speaker 5: his catchers like family, and Bobby's put a ton of
- 26:20Speaker 5: effort and investment into this and it just hasn't produced
- 26:23Speaker 5: results on the field.
- 26:25Speaker 3: I would say what I think AJ wants to say,
- 26:28Speaker 3: but he's not allowed because he's the he's the guy
- 26:31Speaker 3: when it talks about playing too much. Yeah, anybody, anybody could.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I you could go out in any part of your
- 26:38Speaker 3: career and catch one hundred and fifty games in a
- 26:40Speaker 3: season that doesn't create a two year decline? To me,
- 26:45Speaker 3: do you think the do you think the team kind
- 26:48Speaker 3: of lost faith in them after one bad year? They
- 26:51Speaker 3: went out and got Kyle Higashioka, who brings a lot
- 26:55Speaker 3: of value receiving wise, and now this year he's almost
- 26:58Speaker 3: in two seventies, so he's he's bringing it with the
- 27:01Speaker 3: with the stick too. But do you think the Rangers
- 27:04Speaker 3: belief in their player may have kind of hurt that
- 27:08Speaker 3: because you said, as soon as they brought him in,
- 27:10Speaker 3: maybe he was an eighty to one hundred guy. He's
- 27:13Speaker 3: an All star, and then you get one year, one
- 27:16Speaker 3: year essentially to prove it, and they go out and
- 27:18Speaker 3: spend twelve million dollars on a backup catcher.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, the only answer I'd happen to that, Eric,
- 27:24Speaker 5: probably is that, Listen, last year was really poor.
- 27:28Speaker 2: It was it was.
- 27:29Speaker 5: It was a really bad season, and I do think
- 27:32Speaker 5: that the Rangers felt like they needed some insurance and
- 27:35Speaker 5: they needed somebody who could step in if this slide continued.
- 27:41Speaker 5: And you know, they had traded for Carson Kelly last
- 27:45Speaker 5: year to kind of be a legitimate backup type split
- 27:50Speaker 5: split time. Carson's had a great year in Chicago this year,
- 27:54Speaker 5: and I think they felt like they needed to continue
- 27:56Speaker 5: that kind of splitting of time this season. And maybe
- 28:00Speaker 5: it did in some regard it rode Jonah's confidence in himself.
- 28:04Speaker 5: But whatever has been the case. You know, this is
- 28:07Speaker 5: a guy who has a six oh four OPS over
- 28:10Speaker 5: the last two years. It's the third worst in baseball,
- 28:14Speaker 5: and it just he's got to be more productive at
- 28:17Speaker 5: the plate to be a to be a regular player.
- 28:21Speaker 4: I hate that. I hate he playing too much.
- 28:22Speaker 2: He won a pitcher, he didn't get his arm over exposed,
- 28:24Speaker 2: he caught he's a catcher. No have all off season
- 28:27Speaker 2: to get better played too much. Come on, evn't quick
- 28:28Speaker 2: given quick, quick, quick making stuff up now, Evan, this
- 28:31Speaker 2: is what this is what people complain about you about.
- 28:33Speaker 2: You make stuff up and then you tweet it the
- 28:35Speaker 2: people believe it, So stop stop it all right now.
- 28:39Speaker 2: You also told me recently that this was Bruce Bochi's
- 28:42Speaker 2: last year. So now since you're making up things, let's
- 28:45Speaker 2: go and see. Is this Bruce Bochi's last year?
- 28:48Speaker 5: I think if I if I had to pick one
- 28:51Speaker 5: or the other, I think this is probably gonna be
- 28:54Speaker 5: it for Boach. But I I I asked him he's questions.
- 29:00Speaker 5: At the beginning of the year, he made it very
- 29:02Speaker 5: clear he wasn't going to deal with this and it
- 29:04Speaker 5: was going to be put off until the end of
- 29:05Speaker 5: the season. And I still feel like this is a
- 29:10Speaker 5: very cagy person. He's a cag manager, and he's cagy
- 29:14Speaker 5: in his answers, and so I don't rule anything out.
- 29:18Speaker 5: But there have been times to me when Bouches looked
- 29:21Speaker 5: tired and frustrated this year, and it's got to be
- 29:24Speaker 5: a frustrating year. And the one thing for me that
- 29:25Speaker 5: would be that would be a shame is this is
- 29:29Speaker 5: one of the great managers of the last century. I
- 29:33Speaker 5: sure would hate for him to go out with a
- 29:35Speaker 5: team that just didn't live up to expectations in any
- 29:38Speaker 5: way whatsoever.
- 29:41Speaker 4: Devin, I'm in Kansas City in two weeks.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Two weeks or next weekend, So two weekends from now,
- 29:47Speaker 2: two saturdays from now, that's barbecue in Kansas City where
- 29:50Speaker 2: shuld I go eat.
- 29:51Speaker 5: Hey, Jay, what's your favorite But you've been here so much,
- 29:54Speaker 5: what's your favorite barbecue spot?
- 29:55Speaker 2: Is it?
- 29:55Speaker 4: Joe's No stack, Stack's always been in my spots.
- 29:59Speaker 5: You just like Jack stat because it's convenient because you
- 30:01Speaker 5: stay Jack Sack.
- 30:02Speaker 4: No, what's it's no?
- 30:03Speaker 5: Sorry?
- 30:03Speaker 2: Q thirty nine, Sorry, not stack Q thirty nine.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 30:06Speaker 5: I was a Q thirty nine yesterday and I like
- 30:08Speaker 5: Q thirty nine a lot. I may go to Charbar today,
- 30:12Speaker 5: which is a place that I've I've kind of started
- 30:14Speaker 5: to like a lot more in the last couple of years.
- 30:16Speaker 5: And since I'm here, if I tried to go to
- 30:18Speaker 5: Joe's now, there's going to be a line out the doors,
- 30:20Speaker 5: So I may save that for tomorrow and an early launch.
- 30:23Speaker 5: But there's three there's three great spots in the rotation
- 30:27Speaker 5: and more places that I just you know, haven't discovered.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Rose need to play like a ten game series
- 30:35Speaker 1: against the Rangers, so you can just do the tour.
- 30:38Speaker 4: I can hear Evan getting fatter.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I miss Casey. I missed that Casey barbecue.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Yeah a j I ate healthy last weekend when I
- 30:47Speaker 5: wasn't with the club. I spent the weekend and in
- 30:49Speaker 5: your home state eating lots of grouper down by the beach.
- 30:53Speaker 4: That's that's a great.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Time you go. That's what you do, so then you
- 30:55Speaker 1: can do the barbecue week now in Kansas.
- 30:58Speaker 2: I got to eat healthy for this week until I
- 31:00Speaker 2: out of Kansas City for two days.
- 31:01Speaker 1: There you go, good plan. Well, I haven't enjoy it. Man,
- 31:04Speaker 1: good to catch up with. Do you appreciate the time
- 31:06Speaker 1: as always?
- 31:07Speaker 5: Hey, j I was glad to see that you played
- 31:10Speaker 5: some banana ball. I mean, I think that was That's
- 31:12Speaker 5: your career right there.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Banana ball.
