Speaker 1: Chapter fourteen, Pinocchio, not having listened to the good advice
• 0:04
Speaker 1: of the talking cricket, falls into the hands of the assassins. Dear, oh, dear,
• 0:12
Speaker 1: when I come to think of it, said the marionette
• 0:14
Speaker 1: to himself, as he once more set out on his journey.
• 0:18
Speaker 1: We boys are really very unlucky. Everybody scolds us, everybody
• 0:21
Speaker 1: gives us advice, everybody warns us. If we were to
• 0:25
Speaker 1: allow it, every one would try to be father and
• 0:27
Speaker 1: mother to us, everyone, even the talking cricket. Take me,
• 0:31
Speaker 1: for example, just because I would not listen to that
• 0:33
Speaker 1: bothersome cricket who knows how many misfortunes may be awating me. Assassins, Indeed,
• 0:38
Speaker 1: at least, I have never believed in them, nor ever
• 0:41
Speaker 1: will to talk Sensibly. I think assassins have been invented
• 0:44
Speaker 1: by fathers and mothers to frighten children who want to
• 0:47
Speaker 1: run away at night. And then, even if I were
• 0:50
Speaker 1: to meet them on the road, what matter. I'll just
• 0:52
Speaker 1: run up to them and say, well, signory, what do
• 0:54
Speaker 1: you want, Remember that you can't fool with me, Run
• 0:58
Speaker 1: along and mind your business. Such a speech I can
• 1:01
Speaker 1: almost see those poor fellows running like the wind. But
• 1:04
Speaker 1: in case they don't run away, I can always run myself.
• 1:09
Speaker 1: Pinocchio was not given time to argue any longer, for
• 1:12
Speaker 1: he thought he heard a slight rustle among the leaves
• 1:15
Speaker 1: behind him. He turned to look, and behold, there in
• 1:19
Speaker 1: the blackness stood two big black shadows, wrapped from head
• 1:24
Speaker 1: to foot in black sacks. The two figures leaped toward him,
• 1:28
Speaker 1: as softly as if they were ghosts. Here they come,
• 1:33
Speaker 1: Pinocchio said to himself, and not knowing where to hide
• 1:37
Speaker 1: the gold pieces, he stuck all four of them under
• 1:40
Speaker 1: his tongue. He tried to run away, but hardly had
• 1:43
Speaker 1: taken a step when he felt his arms grasp and
• 1:45
Speaker 1: heard two horrible, deep voices say to him your money
• 1:50
Speaker 1: or your life on account of the gold pieces in
• 1:55
Speaker 1: his mouth. Pinocchio could not say a word, so he
• 1:58
Speaker 1: tried with head and hands and body to show as
• 2:01
Speaker 1: best he could that he was only a poor marionette
• 2:04
Speaker 1: without a penny in his pocket. Come on, less nonsense,
• 2:08
Speaker 1: and out with your money, cried the two thebs in
• 2:10
Speaker 1: threatening voices. Once more, Pinocchio's head in hands said I
• 2:15
  Speaker 1: haven't a penny. Out with that money, or you're a
• 2:19
Speaker 1: dead man, said the taller of the two assassins, dead man,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: repeated the other. And after having killed you, we will
• 2:29
Speaker 1: kill your father, also your father. Also, no, no, not
• 2:35
Speaker 1: my father, cried Pinocchio, wild with terror. But as he screamed,
• 2:39
Speaker 1: the gold pieces tinkled together in his mouth. Ah, you rascal,
• 2:44
Speaker 1: So that's the game. You have the money hidden under
• 2:47
Speaker 1: your tongue. Out with it. But Pinocchio was as stubborn
• 2:51
Speaker 1: as ever. Are you deaf? Wait, young man, we'll get
• 2:55
Speaker 1: it from you. In a twinkling. One of them grabbed
• 2:58
Speaker 1: the marionette by the nose, the other by the chin,
• 3:01
Speaker 1: and they pulled him unmercifully from side to side in
• 3:03
Speaker 1: order to make him open his mouth. All was of
• 3:07
Speaker 1: no use. The marionette's lips might have been nailed together,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: they would not open. In desperation, the smaller of the
• 3:15
Speaker 1: two assassins pulled out a long knife from his pocket
• 3:18
Speaker 1: and tried to pry Pinocchio's mouth open with it. Quick
• 3:22
Speaker 1: as a flash, the marionette sank his teep deep into
• 3:25
Speaker 1: the assassin's hand, bit it off, and spat it out.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Fancy is surprised when he saw that it was not
• 3:32
Speaker 1: a hand but a cat's paw, Encouraged by this burst victory,
• 3:37
Speaker 1: he freed himself from the claws of his assailors, and,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: leaping over the bushes along the road, ran swiftly across
• 3:44
Speaker 1: the fields. His pursuers were after him at once, like
• 3:47
Speaker 1: two dogs chasing a hare. After running several miles or so,
• 3:51
Speaker 1: Pinocchio was well nigh exhausted. Seeing himself lost, he climbed
• 3:55
Speaker 1: up a giant pine tree and sat there to see
• 3:58
Speaker 1: what he could see. Aassins tried to climb also, but
• 4:02
Speaker 1: they slipped and fell. Far from giving up the chase,
• 4:06
Speaker 1: this only spurred them on. They gathered a bundle of wood,
• 4:10
Speaker 1: piled it up high at the foot of the pine,
• 4:12
Speaker 1: and set fire to it. In a twinkling, the tree
• 4:15
Speaker 1: began to sputter and burn, like a candle blown by
• 4:18
Speaker 1: the wind. Pinocchio saw the flames climb higher and higher.
• 4:22
Speaker 1: Not wishing to end his days as a roasted marionette,
• 4:25
Speaker 1: he climbed quickly to the ground and off he went,
• 4:28
Speaker 1: the assassins close to him as before dawn was breaking, When,
• 4:33
Speaker 1: without any warning whatsoever, Pinocchio found his path barred by
• 4:37
Speaker 1: a deep pool full of water the color of muddy coffee.
• 4:41
Speaker 1: What was there to do. With a one, two three,
• 4:44
Speaker 1: he jumped clear across it. The assassins jumped also, but
• 4:48
Speaker 1: not having measured their distance well, splashed. They fell right
• 4:52
Speaker 1: into the middle of the pool. Pinocchio, who heard the
• 4:54
Speaker 1: splash and felt it too, cried out, laughing, but never
• 4:58
Speaker 1: stopping in his race. A pleasant bath to you, signori.
• 5:03
Speaker 1: He thought they must surely be drowned, and turned his
• 5:06
Speaker 1: head to sea. But there were the two somber figures
• 5:10
Speaker 1: still following him, though their black sacks were drenched and
• 5:14
Speaker 1: dripping with water. So ends Chapter fourteen of Pinocchio.
