- 0:36Speaker 1: so I got three three flights announced. Coming up joining
- 0:39Speaker 1: us this morning is the chairperson with Badger Honor Flight,
- 0:42Speaker 1: mister Brian's nigeler Brian.
- 0:44Speaker 2: How you been doing pretty good, Sean. Thanks for the
- 0:46Speaker 2: time today, thanks.
- 0:47Speaker 1: For joining us, and thank you for the great work
- 0:49Speaker 1: that you guys do. I had the opportunity a number
- 0:53Speaker 1: of years ago to travel with some veterans out to
- 0:56Speaker 1: DC with you guys as your guest at at Badge
- 1:00Speaker 1: Your Honor Flight, and what an amazing day it is.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I'm going to talk a little bit with you about
- 1:05Speaker 1: what the experience is all about and really the importance
- 1:09Speaker 1: of doing this. But real quick before we get started,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the website Badger Honor Flight dot org. That's Badger Honor
- 1:16Speaker 1: Flight dot org. We talk about what a great opportunity
- 1:19Speaker 1: it is. But there's a really important element to make
- 1:21Speaker 1: this all work, which is veterans. And you are encouraging
- 1:25Speaker 1: veterans right now who haven't taken this opportunity. You really
- 1:28Speaker 1: want to get them signed up, don't you.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yes, we do. We are still looking for World War
- 1:33Speaker 2: Two Korean and Vietnam veterans and also terminally ill veterans
- 1:38Speaker 2: from any conflict that we've seen an increase in those
- 1:43Speaker 2: types of veterans. But yeah, we're actively looking for veterans
- 1:47Speaker 2: from World War Two through Vietnam to get on our
- 1:49Speaker 2: waitlist and going on trip with us.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And that's also something I know for a lot of folks,
- 1:53Speaker 1: whether they're personally a veteran or if they've got a
- 1:56Speaker 1: family member, parents, brothers, sisters, other relatives that served, it's
- 2:02Speaker 1: really important as well, you know, for them to let
- 2:05Speaker 1: them know about this. Also, I think a lot of
- 2:07Speaker 1: folks learn about Badger Honor Flight and learn about more
- 2:10Speaker 1: specifically the opportunity to join in at bad Your Honor
- 2:13Speaker 1: Flight through relatives, you know, family friends, those type of areas.
- 2:17Speaker 1: People need to get this information out, don't they, Yes,
- 2:19Speaker 1: they do, And that information of course bad your Honor
- 2:22Speaker 1: flights dot org. That's bad your Honor flight dot org
- 2:24Speaker 1: and Brian, I know, I mean, make it real easy
- 2:27Speaker 1: right right online. There's there's an application folks can can
- 2:30Speaker 1: fill out. Let's talk about then, about the event itself
- 2:34Speaker 1: and and you do a number of these each year.
- 2:37Speaker 1: You guys put together a fantastic schedule with Badge on
- 2:39Speaker 1: a flight to get the men and women who served
- 2:42Speaker 1: out to see the memorials in d C. Let's talk
- 2:45Speaker 1: a little bit about that day and about that that
- 2:47Speaker 1: schedule of event that goes on that day. This is
- 2:50Speaker 1: something that's obviously hugely important to the vets. It's really
- 2:54Speaker 1: rewarding to folks that get a chance travel, but also
- 2:57Speaker 1: for people here in Madison, there's some great opportunities for
- 2:59Speaker 1: them as well to participate, aren't there.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yes, sir, we're we're always so we're always looking as
- 3:06Speaker 2: we're as we talked about, looking for veterans to get
- 3:09Speaker 2: signed up, but we're also looking for veterans to help
- 3:11Speaker 2: I'm sorry, volunteers to help give these veterans a day
- 3:16Speaker 2: that they will never forget. It's we always say the
- 3:18Speaker 2: day they will remember forever. And uh, we're also looking
- 3:23Speaker 2: for like volunteers help with admin, medical team members volunteers
- 3:28Speaker 2: there and also to help out with the send off
- 3:31Speaker 2: and welcome home, which are important parts of that of
- 3:34Speaker 2: that flight day.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You mentioned that send off and that welcome home and
- 3:38Speaker 1: and to me, that's you know, it's there's there's so
- 3:41Speaker 1: many things that that I personally remember experiencing that day.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I think one of those biggest surprises is that and
- 3:49Speaker 1: I don't want to ruin too much, but the arrival
- 3:53Speaker 1: back after a very long day, and you think that
- 3:55Speaker 1: these that these uh servicemen and women, these these uh,
- 3:59Speaker 1: these these veterans would be would be exhausted. You see
- 4:03Speaker 1: you see them light up as you get back to
- 4:05Speaker 1: Dane County Regional and the and there's that party going on.
- 4:08Speaker 1: There's a whole it's almost like that second or third win.
- 4:11Speaker 1: That's it's it's such a fun thing, not just for
- 4:13Speaker 1: the veterans but for folks who who want to come
- 4:15Speaker 1: out and think. But also you got young folks. What
- 4:18Speaker 1: an opportunity that is for them as well to experience.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yes, it is, and you're right about how it is
- 4:25Speaker 2: a long day and.
- 4:27Speaker 3: The emotions, the enthusiasm, it just keeps building all day,
- 4:34Speaker 3: several folks will take a quick nap on the plane
- 4:36Speaker 3: ride home, so that kind of recharges the batteries there.
- 4:39Speaker 2: But when you get to that welcome home and you
- 4:41Speaker 2: hear that band and it's it's deafening up there at
- 4:44Speaker 2: the top of the stairs, and you look down and
- 4:46Speaker 2: you see four to five thousand people in the Dane
- 4:49Speaker 2: County Airport there to welcome the veterans, and you're right,
- 4:54Speaker 2: it's it's it's family members that know them. But I
- 4:57Speaker 2: also have seen more and more folks in our general
- 5:01Speaker 2: public that are bringing their family out with their young kids,
- 5:05Speaker 2: but they can see what this is all about and learn,
- 5:10Speaker 2: you know, meet these men and women who served, whether
- 5:13Speaker 2: it was overseas or you know, the state side. And yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 2: we're we're seeing an increase in that, and we have
- 5:19Speaker 2: plenty of activities for the young kids as well.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I remember my son still remembers, I should be more specific,
- 5:25Speaker 1: he was very young when I went, and he still
- 5:27Speaker 1: talks about it had quite an impact on him as well.
- 5:30Speaker 1: That that specifically the welcome home ceremony. Let's kind of
- 5:33Speaker 1: walk through the day then, so obviously there's the big
- 5:36Speaker 1: send off the vets arrive at Dane County Regional fly out.
- 5:40Speaker 2: To d C.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Once folks get to d C, let's talk a little
- 5:43Speaker 1: bit about what goes on the day of that that
- 5:46Speaker 1: honor flight.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yes, when we get to d C, there will be
- 5:51Speaker 2: a small reception side the airport, which which is the
- 5:56Speaker 2: first of several tho it and that's mainly made up
- 5:59Speaker 2: of folks trying to catch their flights. But folks will stop,
- 6:03Speaker 2: take a moment and form a line for the veterans
- 6:06Speaker 2: to go. Buy a plot them, think them, shake their hands,
- 6:09Speaker 2: give hugs. And then from there we'll go either to
- 6:18Speaker 2: Arlington National Cemetery for changing the Guard, or we'll go
- 6:20Speaker 2: to the Marine Corps Memorial and we'll do our group
- 6:24Speaker 2: photo there. We'll have lunch after we're all done there.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Then we'll head on over to Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean Memorials,
- 6:35Speaker 2: which is where a great majority of our veterans now
- 6:37Speaker 2: are from. We'll spend time there. There's plenty of time
- 6:40Speaker 2: to visit all three of those memorials, and then we'll
- 6:45Speaker 2: go over to World War Two Memorial for a brief visit,
- 6:50Speaker 2: and then depending on how the day goes, we may
- 6:53Speaker 2: go to the FDR. Martin Luther King Memorials, or we'll
- 6:57Speaker 2: go to the Pentagon ninet eleven Memorial and we typically
- 7:00Speaker 2: will end the day at the US Air Force Memorial
- 7:03Speaker 2: which is just up the hill from the Pentagon, and
- 7:08Speaker 2: then we'll get back to the airport, grab some supper,
- 7:12Speaker 2: get on the plane, and come on home, and uh,
- 7:16Speaker 2: we'll get them back to their families at night as
- 7:18Speaker 2: part of that welcome home.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And I think a lot of people are surprised to
- 7:22Speaker 1: learn this, but for a lot of these a lot
- 7:24Speaker 1: of these veterans, this is their first time seeing these
- 7:27Speaker 1: these monuments. Seeing these memorials, you think about, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 1: for for many of us, we see, you know, we're
- 7:33Speaker 1: familiar with these. A lot of us have maybe for
- 7:35Speaker 1: school trips or other opportunities ben to DC and and
- 7:38Speaker 1: what that means to us when you're a veteran, and
- 7:42Speaker 1: from what I what I witnessed, there's obviously a special
- 7:46Speaker 1: level of appreciation. There's a special level of odd to
- 7:51Speaker 1: see them seeing these memorials for the first time. A
- 7:54Speaker 1: lot of these men and women have have never had
- 7:56Speaker 1: this opportunity before.
- 7:58Speaker 2: That's correct. But I will also one of the things
- 8:00Speaker 2: I've noticed more recently is that when you talk to
- 8:03Speaker 2: a veteran, they have seen, you know, they say they
- 8:07Speaker 2: have gone to d C, so I don't need to go,
- 8:10Speaker 2: or I've been to the I've been to the wall, okay,
- 8:13Speaker 2: but going there with your fellow veterans it's a whole
- 8:18Speaker 2: different experience. And we've talked that several who were a
- 8:22Speaker 2: little hasband about going and their family said, yeah, you
- 8:25Speaker 2: should probably do that. We've heard that they're very thankful
- 8:30Speaker 2: for that because to share that moment with someone else
- 8:32Speaker 2: who was in a similar position as them, or that
- 8:37Speaker 2: the experiences someone to talk to about it. So we're
- 8:42Speaker 2: starting to see more of those type veterans who have said,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you know what, I'm going to go and I'm going
- 8:48Speaker 2: to go with my son, or I'm going to go
- 8:49Speaker 2: with my daughter and it's a totally different experience than
- 8:53Speaker 2: maybe when they were there before.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Well, that is that is an interesting perspective for sure.
- 8:57Speaker 1: As we talked this morning with Brian Ziegler, of course,
- 9:00Speaker 1: Brian comes to us from Badger Honor Flight more online,
- 9:02Speaker 1: Badger honor flight dot org. That's Badger Honor Flight dot org.
- 9:07Speaker 1: A v I P kind of day and uh, Brian,
- 9:10Speaker 1: we started our conversation talking about recruitment, and you make
- 9:13Speaker 1: the application process very easy for folks who head on
- 9:16Speaker 1: over to the website Badger Honorflight dot org. One thing
- 9:20Speaker 1: that people need to remember is is there's no cost
- 9:23Speaker 1: to the UH the servicemen and women that are that
- 9:26Speaker 1: are traveling with the Badger Honor Flight. It's it's something
- 9:30Speaker 1: that I know you guys work very very hard to
- 9:32Speaker 1: make sure that that cost or other limitations are not
- 9:36Speaker 1: a barrier. You guys do a lot of work to
- 9:38Speaker 1: make sure that these folks are able able to make
- 9:41Speaker 1: this trip.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yes, we've we've been very fortunate that the generosity of
- 9:47Speaker 2: the public that is supporting us in our mission to
- 9:50Speaker 2: give these men and women UH their trip of a lifetime.
- 9:54Speaker 2: We want to say thank you to them, and we
- 9:56Speaker 2: want to say thank you to everybody helps get the
- 9:59Speaker 2: message out there. And that's that's what we got to
- 10:02Speaker 2: keep doing, is continue this mission forward.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And if if you know somebody or you are somebody
- 10:08Speaker 1: who've even thought about about it, it's really an important
- 10:11Speaker 1: thing to get signed up again the website Badger Honor
- 10:14Speaker 1: Flight dot org. That's Badger Honor Flight dot org. Of
- 10:18Speaker 1: course I'm three scheduled for this fall, and then of
- 10:21Speaker 1: course I know you guys will start nice and early
- 10:24Speaker 1: with spring spring Badger Honor Flights as well real quick.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Of course mentioned the recruitment and the importance of getting
- 10:30Speaker 1: those applications in and folks getting on the list real quick. Obviously,
- 10:35Speaker 1: there's there is cost to this, and I know that
- 10:38Speaker 1: there's a lot of folks that are very generous here
- 10:40Speaker 1: listening to the station. I know there's a lot of
- 10:42Speaker 1: business owners and leaders as well. I mentioned that website
- 10:46Speaker 1: Badger honorflight dot org. You do make it very easy
- 10:48Speaker 1: as well for folks that want to contribute, that want
- 10:50Speaker 1: to do their their small part to say thank you
- 10:53Speaker 1: right on the website. You guys have a real convenient
- 10:55Speaker 1: area there to make a donation. You also have an
- 10:57Speaker 1: opportunity for folks to join the mailing list as well,
- 10:59Speaker 1: don't you.
- 11:00Speaker 2: You Yes, we do. And the other part is that
- 11:03Speaker 2: we do have sponsorship opportunities for the fall flights and
- 11:07Speaker 2: you don't have to you know, while we would love
- 11:10Speaker 2: for someone to step forward and be pay for the
- 11:13Speaker 2: entire flight, there are smaller components of our flight costs
- 11:18Speaker 2: that every bit counts, and so we'll be publishing those
- 11:22Speaker 2: on our Facebook page. Real soon. You could sponsor to lunch,
- 11:26Speaker 2: you could sponsor the buses in DC. So there's different
- 11:28Speaker 2: components and we do everything possible to recognize everybody that does.
- 11:38Speaker 2: The sponsorships are the donation, so every big counts and
- 11:42Speaker 2: we greatly appreciate it.
- 11:44Speaker 1: And again all that information available. Bad your honor flight
