- 0:14I was born to kill it.
- 0:15I was meant to win.
- 0:16I am down and willing,
- 0:17so I will find a way.
- 0:19It took a minute,
- 0:20now it didn't have to ride away.
- 0:21When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:23you decide to stay.
- 0:24That's how it win us, man.
- 0:25Stick a fork in the hay to
- 0:34What is going on, everybody?
- 0:36Welcome to an early edition
- 0:37of Lunch with the Clydesdale
- 0:39My name is Scott.
- 0:40I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:41And we are early today
- 0:42because we have a couple
- 0:43special guests with us.
- 0:45And that is we have Sandy Fent,
- 0:47who is here with public
- 0:48safety with the state of Ohio.
- 0:51And just I'm a state employee as well.
- 0:53My title is super long.
- 0:54I don't even remember what it is.
- 0:56Mine's long as well.
- 0:58Right.
- 0:59I think that is tradition with the state.
- 1:01You are the first responder
- 1:03physical wellness administrator.
- 1:04That's correct.
- 1:06And then we have Debbie
- 1:07Wagner with expanding horizons.
- 1:09And I think this Debbie and I were talking,
- 1:11I think this is our fourth
- 1:11time on the show.
- 1:14I usually she's here with
- 1:15Matt shingle Decker,
- 1:16but she has kicked him out
- 1:17for the day and she's riding solo.
- 1:18That's right.
- 1:19And I don't know my job title.
- 1:24Yeah.
- 1:26Does it even matter these days?
- 1:28You do what you're told to do.
- 1:30And at the end of the day,
- 1:31you hopefully get a paycheck.
- 1:32That's right.
- 1:35So,
- 1:37We had you guys on last year
- 1:38for the nine-eleven climb.
- 1:39I think we had you on the year before.
- 1:42And so this is the third year.
- 1:46Yes, it is.
- 1:48And Sandy with being the first responder,
- 1:51physical wellness administrator,
- 1:52what does this event mean to you?
- 1:55So this is our signature
- 1:56event and director Wilson is,
- 2:01has instructed me that I
- 2:03need a thousand people at
- 2:04this event to keep my job.
- 2:07So we know he's sort of,
- 2:10at least I hope he's joking,
- 2:12but this is our signature event.
- 2:14And this is what we work all
- 2:16year long for to bring this
- 2:19event because it's so
- 2:20important to all of us here at DPS.
- 2:24So from my understanding,
- 2:25this event does two things.
- 2:27It pays tribute to those
- 2:29first responders who lost
- 2:30their lives in nine eleven.
- 2:33Yes.
- 2:33And that number is four
- 2:34hundred and twelve first responders.
- 2:36And that number is very
- 2:37important to this day.
- 2:38Yes, it is.
- 2:40The other thing that this is
- 2:41important is to make aware
- 2:43the importance of physical
- 2:46fitness and moving for
- 2:48first responders to stay in
- 2:50shape and be able to do
- 2:52their jobs at the best of their ability.
- 2:53Correct.
- 2:56So let's talk about the
- 2:59honoring of the first
- 3:01responders from nine eleven.
- 3:03So we honor them by doing a workout.
- 3:06Yes.
- 3:08So that workout is forty one
- 3:10minutes and twenty seconds long.
- 3:13It is we have four different options,
- 3:17so anyone can be included.
- 3:20And what we're looking for
- 3:21is any first responder,
- 3:23their families and or
- 3:25friends to come to the
- 3:28historic cruise stadium.
- 3:29And you have choices of yoga.
- 3:32You can climb stairs.
- 3:35You can do just the walking
- 3:37path that we have.
- 3:38And then also we have a CrossFit workout,
- 3:41which consists of a hundred stairs,
- 3:44twenty burpees,
- 3:46thirty sit ups and forty
- 3:48lunges or air squats.
- 3:50And that is for forty one
- 3:52minutes and twenty seconds.
- 3:54So it's an AMRAP.
- 3:57And I've pulled that up on the screen.
- 4:00what, what I've, what I love about this is,
- 4:02um, I know Debbie, I know Matt, I know me,
- 4:06we are CrossFit junkies, right?
- 4:09But sometimes that can be
- 4:10intimidating for people on the outside.
- 4:12And really what this is
- 4:14about is getting you there
- 4:16and doing some kind of
- 4:17movement for that time
- 4:19period of forty one minutes
- 4:21and twenty seconds.
- 4:22Yes.
- 4:22We just want people to move
- 4:24and whether that, you know,
- 4:25not everyone does CrossFit.
- 4:27Um,
- 4:28Not everyone is capable of
- 4:29doing the stairs.
- 4:31Maybe they have a knee issue
- 4:34or something like that.
- 4:35So we do have other options
- 4:37so that we can include as
- 4:38many people as possible.
- 4:40So that's why we have the walking option.
- 4:42We also have the yoga option.
- 4:46And you use the entire stadium for that?
- 4:49Yes, we are spread everywhere.
- 4:53Now, I've done a walk at the stadium.
- 4:55Do you do the walk around the top?
- 4:57Yes.
- 4:58So the walk is around the top.
- 5:00The yoga is in the, I believe,
- 5:01southeast corner, kind of in the shade.
- 5:04So that's probably the could
- 5:06be the best place to be.
- 5:08And then the rest of us are out,
- 5:11whether you're doing the
- 5:12stair climb or the CrossFit workout,
- 5:14you're out on the field.
- 5:15So we actually do most of it
- 5:17on the field and we use the stairs,
- 5:18obviously, for the stair climb.
- 5:20Yeah,
- 5:21and for people who aren't from Columbus,
- 5:24we have two soccer stadiums.
- 5:26The soccer team here is named The Crew,
- 5:28and so we say Crew Stadium.
- 5:31Sandy,
- 5:31it was very important to say the classic.
- 5:36The historic.
- 5:37The historic Crew Stadium.
- 5:39It was the first stadium for
- 5:41the Columbus Crew,
- 5:43and it's now used for
- 5:44events and concerts and all
- 5:46of those types of things.
- 5:48But we have a new stadium downtown.
- 5:50and this one is the one out
- 5:51by the fairgrounds right
- 5:53off of seventy one that's
- 5:55great off seventeenth
- 5:57avenue seventieth avenue so
- 5:59you can go there to hang
- 6:00out with these people or if
- 6:03you are unavailable to make
- 6:05that trip you can always do
- 6:08this in your own home in
- 6:10your own gym and just do
- 6:12that movement for forty one
- 6:13minutes and twenty seconds
- 6:15and then you can
- 6:17post that, tag it,
- 6:19and show that you are
- 6:20supporting this effort on
- 6:23your social media?
- 6:24Yes.
- 6:25So I know at the gym that I attend and own,
- 6:29we are doing that as our
- 6:30workout of the day.
- 6:31So we will have on Thursday, we have two,
- 6:35three, five classes that day,
- 6:37and that will be the
- 6:38workout of the day for the entire day.
- 6:41And then we'll send pictures
- 6:42in attaching each class to the hashtag,
- 6:47which is ODPS climb for our
- 6:52social media tags on that.
- 6:54So ODPS climb is your hashtag.
- 6:57Yes.
- 6:59And you slipped in there
- 7:00that you own a gym.
- 7:01Yes.
- 7:03What gym do you own?
- 7:05I own a BB fitness nine three seven.
- 7:07It's in Springfield.
- 7:10And it's a B or BB Metfix
- 7:13would be the other name.
- 7:14Yeah.
- 7:16So you're a MedFix gym?
- 7:17Yes.
- 7:18Okay.
- 7:20We've been only open just over a year.
- 7:23Okay.
- 7:24And you do functional
- 7:25fitness type classes?
- 7:26Yes.
- 7:27Okay.
- 7:30So you are doing the long
- 7:34workout with the lunges and
- 7:36the burpees and all of that?
- 7:37That's correct.
- 7:38Okay, cool.
- 7:41How's it been being a gym
- 7:42owner for a year?
- 7:44Honestly,
- 7:45I've had much more success than I
- 7:49thought I would have.
- 7:50And I have a great community
- 7:52of gym members and clients
- 7:54that come in and they're quite fantastic.
- 7:57That's cool.
- 7:58Very supportive.
- 8:00How does that,
- 8:01do you have other family
- 8:02members that take part of
- 8:03the day as you're working your day job?
- 8:07I have other coaches that I, yeah, my,
- 8:12I have a thirty three year old son.
- 8:14And he is a non-active
- 8:18participant and neither is my husband.
- 8:20So they joke that the only
- 8:21time they're at the gym is
- 8:22if something's broken.
- 8:25But they all claim they have a key.
- 8:31But no, they're very supportive.
- 8:34My community is very supportive.
- 8:37Anytime I bring anything like this or,
- 8:39you know,
- 8:40if we do MRF and that type of thing,
- 8:42they all show up in droves.
- 8:44My family's supportive.
- 8:45So it's great.
- 8:47We have about fifty,
- 8:48fifty members right now.
- 8:51Is the goal for next year
- 8:52when this comes around that
- 8:54your son and husband are
- 8:56active participants?
- 8:58That would be great.
- 9:00My husband refuses to come
- 9:02at my five and six a.m.
- 9:03classes, so.
- 9:05Isaac went like, well,
- 9:05we have afternoon classes as well.
- 9:07So he's like, well,
- 9:09I get him out walking and
- 9:10he does lunges in our dining room.
- 9:12So as long as he's moving, we're good.
- 9:16Yeah.
- 9:16You might have trouble
- 9:17getting me at a five and six as well.
- 9:20Just saying.
- 9:22It's not for all of us, I should say.
- 9:25No, no, no, no, no.
- 9:27It's a special breed of
- 9:28people that show up at five and six a.m.
- 9:31Well,
- 9:31and what's crazy when I was at
- 9:32CrossFit Polaris,
- 9:34like you had to be like the,
- 9:36the class would release at eight.
- 9:38And if you didn't get your
- 9:39name in by eight Oh one,
- 9:40you didn't get in those classes.
- 9:41That's wow.
- 9:42So not only is it a special breed,
- 9:44there's a lot of them.
- 9:46Yes.
- 9:47Those are my largest classes.
- 9:49Yeah.
- 9:49That's crazy.
- 9:50Yeah.
- 9:52Crazy.
- 9:52I always say that we like to
- 9:54get moving before our
- 9:55brains start working.
- 9:58I used to do five AM.
- 10:00I really did.
- 10:01And you're right.
- 10:03I'm not even awake until eight.
- 10:05So did I work out this morning?
- 10:07I think I did.
- 10:08I think I was there.
- 10:10So you are in,
- 10:12your job is about physical
- 10:15wellness for first
- 10:16responders here in Ohio.
- 10:17Yes.
- 10:19Why, why that job?
- 10:21So how I,
- 10:23kind of got involved with it.
- 10:26I am a retired Springfield
- 10:27police detective.
- 10:29I worked twenty eight years
- 10:30in law enforcement.
- 10:31I had three and a half years
- 10:32with Greene County
- 10:32Sheriff's Office in Xenia
- 10:35before I came to Springfield.
- 10:37And in twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen.
- 10:41Long story short,
- 10:42we started a critical
- 10:43incident stress management
- 10:44team and I had that until I retired.
- 10:50So with
- 10:51That background,
- 10:52along with my CrossFit
- 10:56level two credentials and
- 11:00things like that,
- 11:02this position became available.
- 11:04I applied for it.
- 11:06And at that point, here I am.
- 11:09So, yeah.
- 11:13So the good thing about it is trying to
- 11:18educate people,
- 11:20promoting physical fitness for police,
- 11:22fire, EMS, corrections, communications.
- 11:28Did I say EMS?
- 11:29And just trying to get people moving.
- 11:31That's the key.
- 11:34I've actually had some firemen on.
- 11:36I've had some police officers on.
- 11:39And these are people who've
- 11:41made the CrossFit Games.
- 11:44And they say...
- 11:47What's difficult for them is
- 11:48working side by side with
- 11:50people who have let their fitness go,
- 11:52right?
- 11:52When they had the first
- 11:53become a firefighter or a police officer,
- 11:57there were certain measures
- 11:58they had to make to get in.
- 12:00But then once they're in,
- 12:02there's no test or
- 12:03requirement to stay in.
- 12:09Are those things that you're
- 12:10noticing here in Ohio?
- 12:12Yes.
- 12:12So I also was an instructor
- 12:16at the Clark State Police Academy.
- 12:18So I would get the recruits
- 12:20when they would first
- 12:21getting them through the academy.
- 12:23And obviously our objective
- 12:25and goal is to get them to
- 12:26pass the state test.
- 12:28And it's at that point that
- 12:30you have the most
- 12:32availability to them and
- 12:34try to influence them about
- 12:37staying fit and different reasons why.
- 12:40I would often show them
- 12:42videos of um there happens
- 12:46to be one trooper um this
- 12:48was several years ago who
- 12:50um within six I believe it
- 12:51was within six weeks um he
- 12:54got into a fight alone on
- 12:57seventy one um or south
- 13:01south of seventy one and um
- 13:03ended up having to take
- 13:04this man's life and he was
- 13:06in the fight for his life
- 13:07and everything was recorded
- 13:09because it happened right
- 13:09between the cars
- 13:11And had he not been in the
- 13:13physical shape that he was
- 13:15in just out of the academy, he would have,
- 13:18we would have had a police
- 13:19funeral for that.
- 13:20So just giving them examples
- 13:23and explaining that, you know,
- 13:25we're not trying to just get you to pass,
- 13:29but you need to continue
- 13:30this because your life will depend on it.
- 13:32We often during our workouts, well, okay,
- 13:35now I need you to sprint to
- 13:37the top of this hill and
- 13:39start doing pushups.
- 13:41basically to simulate doing
- 13:44compressions on your
- 13:45partner that was just shot.
- 13:47So we just incorporate
- 13:49different scenarios as we
- 13:50go along so that we could
- 13:52keep that in their mind.
- 13:53So even if all you're doing is walking,
- 13:56that walking is very valuable as well.
- 14:01So you are truly preparing
- 14:02for the unknown and the unknowable.
- 14:04Absolutely.
- 14:05And you're trying to
- 14:06simulate instances where
- 14:08those could arise at any
- 14:10time during the shift.
- 14:12So they get out of the academy.
- 14:14What is available to these
- 14:16first responders at their firehouse,
- 14:19at their police station to
- 14:21help them stay fit?
- 14:24I can only speak for
- 14:25Springfield specifically,
- 14:26but I do know that a lot of
- 14:28the firehouses have a workout area.
- 14:34Springfield happens to be
- 14:35building some new facilities,
- 14:37firehouses in Springfield.
- 14:39And so they do have gyms
- 14:40that are also included in that.
- 14:43I know at the Springfield Police Division,
- 14:44we have a whole gym area.
- 14:47So that is all free to them.
- 14:49It's up to them if they want
- 14:50to work out there.
- 14:54They didn't quite have the
- 14:54equipment that I liked.
- 14:55And so that's why I had
- 14:57joined a CrossFit gym.
- 14:59And so, I mean,
- 15:00there's so many gyms in Springfield,
- 15:02Planet Fitness for all different
- 15:05ranges of what you're available to afford.
- 15:10So, you know,
- 15:12it doesn't matter what gym you belong to,
- 15:14as long as you're doing something.
- 15:16We would prefer group
- 15:17workouts because it also
- 15:19incorporates the
- 15:20camaraderie and the
- 15:22community that personally
- 15:24CrossFit brings.
- 15:25So all of that is good.
- 15:28That's what we're looking for.
- 15:29Just move.
- 15:30And the beauty of most
- 15:31CrossFit gyms is they offer
- 15:33first responder or military
- 15:34discounts for those people
- 15:36who are doing those types of jobs.
- 15:40I want to bring Debbie into
- 15:41the discussion here.
- 15:45Expanding Horizons has done
- 15:46a lot about how physical
- 15:49fitness changes your
- 15:51mindset and the mental
- 15:53aspect of what you do.
- 15:58And it started with like
- 16:00juveniles that are in a
- 16:02detention center trying to
- 16:03get them to not be sent
- 16:05back to that when they get out.
- 16:08But you often have the
- 16:09officers working out with them.
- 16:11Have you noticed a change in their mindset,
- 16:15the officers themselves,
- 16:17when they're working out
- 16:18with the people in these classes?
- 16:21Oh, a hundred percent.
- 16:23And actually at Sandy's gym,
- 16:24they host one of our
- 16:25expanding horizons groups.
- 16:26So they have their probation
- 16:28kids and probation officers
- 16:29come in to the gym and work
- 16:31out several days a week.
- 16:32And it is, she's exactly right.
- 16:35When we're trying to bring
- 16:36back that sense of community,
- 16:37both in the expanding
- 16:38horizons program with the kids,
- 16:40but also in the first responder world,
- 16:41because we know both situations,
- 16:44both parties,
- 16:45the kids and the first
- 16:46responders feel completely
- 16:48isolated most of the time.
- 16:51whether they're just feeling
- 16:52alone because they can't
- 16:53relate to anybody at home
- 16:54or at school or feeling
- 16:55like an outcast as a youth,
- 16:57or you're a first responder
- 16:59riding in the car alone,
- 17:01or you're chasing after
- 17:02somebody alone and you
- 17:03don't have that teammate.
- 17:04So what we're trying to do
- 17:05is bring that community,
- 17:07that sense of community back
- 17:08with fitness,
- 17:10which is why we love the climb.
- 17:13We need to add in there that
- 17:14you are able to partner this.
- 17:17Yes.
- 17:17So if forty one minutes of
- 17:18twenty seconds of that
- 17:19movement sounds like a lot
- 17:21like at the crew stadium,
- 17:22most of our people will be
- 17:23partnering this for several reasons,
- 17:27bringing community back.
- 17:30supporting our first responders.
- 17:32We know that suicide is one
- 17:34of the leading causes of
- 17:35death for first responders.
- 17:37And so we, as community members,
- 17:40friends and family members,
- 17:42maybe even friends and
- 17:43family members at a
- 17:43distance to a first responder.
- 17:45I might not be close to any
- 17:46of my first responders in my community,
- 17:48but I support what they do.
- 17:50And so one of the ways I can
- 17:51support what they do is
- 17:52show up to this event,
- 17:54whether I'm coming to the
- 17:54Historic Crew Stadium or
- 17:56whether I'm contacting our
- 17:58local high school and saying, hey,
- 17:59Let's go do this with our
- 18:00first responders to show
- 18:02them that support,
- 18:03bringing that sense of community back.
- 18:07I know in the past you've
- 18:08emailed like every CrossFit
- 18:10gym in the state of Ohio to
- 18:12get them to partake.
- 18:14Did you do that again this year?
- 18:16I did.
- 18:18I'm trying to take some
- 18:19things off Debbie's shoulder.
- 18:20She's a busy woman.
- 18:21But yes, I did.
- 18:24What has the response been like?
- 18:26I would have to ask Anna or...
- 18:30assistant that we have here.
- 18:32But we do have over two
- 18:33hundred twenty people that
- 18:34have registered and we
- 18:36believe one hundred and
- 18:37basically one hundred ninety are on site.
- 18:40So even if you are doing it at your gym,
- 18:43whether it's in Iowa or
- 18:46Michigan or I'm sorry,
- 18:48Michigan or anywhere else like that,
- 18:52sorry, we we still want you to register.
- 18:56Just so we can kind of keep track of that.
- 18:58So wherever you're at,
- 18:59we would like everyone to
- 19:02register regardless of
- 19:03where you're doing that at.
- 19:05Did you see an increase in
- 19:06numbers from year one to year two?
- 19:08Yes.
- 19:09Every year it has grown.
- 19:11We have already registered
- 19:13over twice of what we had last year.
- 19:18So at this point,
- 19:20so they need a ton of
- 19:22credit because they
- 19:23literally have worked
- 19:23diligently all year on this.
- 19:26So not only has Sandy
- 19:28emailed every CrossFit that
- 19:30we have email addresses for.
- 19:32So if we missed someone, we apologize.
- 19:34We're not the best detectives at this,
- 19:36but they also have emailed
- 19:38every first responder
- 19:39office in the state.
- 19:42And every time,
- 19:43Andy, Director Wilson goes out and visits.
- 19:45He talks about this to every
- 19:46first responder office,
- 19:47and they have tracked that
- 19:49in their office and gone
- 19:50back to follow it up.
- 19:53It's up to us as affiliate
- 19:56owners or a police chief or
- 19:58a fire chief to spread that word.
- 20:02I know that I don't probably
- 20:04read every email that I get.
- 20:07And same thing with Matt.
- 20:08He doesn't read every email
- 20:09he gets as an affiliate owner.
- 20:10So it is,
- 20:11it's imperative that we as
- 20:13affiliate owners take time
- 20:14to read this and then challenging myself.
- 20:17I just had a call this
- 20:18morning to take that flyer
- 20:22and print it and then walk
- 20:26it into the local police department,
- 20:27walk it into the local fire
- 20:29department and invite those
- 20:30people personally to come
- 20:32into the gym to participate.
- 20:36That's awesome.
- 20:41I look at you guys as people
- 20:42who are like salmon,
- 20:43you're swimming upstream
- 20:44against our current culture
- 20:48kind of looks at is what's needed today,
- 20:53right?
- 20:54And to have political
- 20:56backing on this program is
- 20:58pretty freaking phenomenal.
- 21:01So
- 21:03how do you not get
- 21:04discouraged when you're
- 21:06battling culture's way of
- 21:10looking at fitness these days?
- 21:13Or do you just surround
- 21:14yourself with people that don't let you?
- 21:19Oh boy.
- 21:21You can only do what you can
- 21:22do and you can, for lack of a better term,
- 21:25you can lead a horse to water.
- 21:28but you can't make them drink.
- 21:30So you just keep pushing,
- 21:32keep trying to be that positive influence,
- 21:34surround yourself with
- 21:35people that want to be where you're at.
- 21:44And all we can do is keep pushing,
- 21:46keep getting the word out
- 21:48and trying to get people, you know,
- 21:51they have to care themselves.
- 21:54And celebrate the wins.
- 21:55A lot of times we get
- 21:57focusing on the losses when
- 21:58really we should just be
- 22:00focusing on celebrating the wins,
- 22:02however it comes.
- 22:03And it's going to come in
- 22:04the most unique ways.
- 22:05I was telling the story the other day.
- 22:07I was talking to a gym and said, hey,
- 22:08have you heard of the nine eleven climb?
- 22:10And they were like, actually, yeah, we do.
- 22:12We just heard of it because
- 22:13now Sandy has told me we
- 22:15had a SWAT team member who
- 22:17competed in June at a
- 22:20competition that we had at
- 22:21one of our juvenile
- 22:21correctional facilities.
- 22:23So he came in and he
- 22:23partnered with two youth at
- 22:25the competition that we had.
- 22:27And in his words,
- 22:29when he finished that competition,
- 22:32he felt wrecked.
- 22:35Left the facility,
- 22:36called and joined a gym
- 22:38because he realized that
- 22:40there was a need.
- 22:41I'm going to guess just like
- 22:43every first responder,
- 22:44he has heard the importance
- 22:46of physical health.
- 22:48But until he had in that
- 22:50situation that day,
- 22:52face the competitive level,
- 22:55not the pursuance like chasing a criminal,
- 22:58but trying to partner with
- 22:59these youth and be a good
- 23:01example for them.
- 23:02That was the wake up call that he needed.
- 23:06And it not only inspired him
- 23:08then to be better,
- 23:09he also had conversations
- 23:11with these youth who were
- 23:12incarcerated about how do
- 23:15these youth get to be where he's at.
- 23:17Right.
- 23:18So that that community of
- 23:19the fitness then
- 23:21organically transforms
- 23:22everyone who is involved.
- 23:25And to kind of give you a
- 23:26little bit of background about myself.
- 23:28So I I was a runner my
- 23:30entire life and never,
- 23:33ever lifted weights,
- 23:34never did anything like that.
- 23:35Tried CrossFit and probably
- 23:36twenty twelve went to a gym
- 23:39that didn't tell me to scale.
- 23:41And even though I was
- 23:42physically able to lift
- 23:44whatever weight it was, I was wrecked.
- 23:46I was done.
- 23:47So I was like,
- 23:47this isn't fun when I can't move.
- 23:50It's not fun.
- 23:51So then fast forward,
- 23:53I'd been training for some triathlons, um,
- 23:57was encouraged, you know,
- 23:58to try CrossFit again, give it a chance,
- 24:00but scale everything.
- 24:02Um, so, um,
- 24:04that I will do that after I
- 24:06finished my race, I had been training for,
- 24:08um, an Ironman.
- 24:10So I finished the Ironman in
- 24:12two weeks later, I joined a CrossFit gym.
- 24:15And from there I thought, oh,
- 24:16I'm in shape.
- 24:17You know,
- 24:17I just swam two point four miles
- 24:20and biked one hundred and twelve and then,
- 24:22you know, ran a full marathon.
- 24:23I'm in shape.
- 24:25I was not.
- 24:26CrossFit's a whole breed of itself.
- 24:29And so I can understand where he came from,
- 24:33where he thinks that he's
- 24:35physically healthy and in good shape.
- 24:39But in reality, you're not.
- 24:41Right.
- 24:42So.
- 24:43It's funny because I saw the
- 24:44video played of that
- 24:47competition on Savan on Monday.
- 24:50And I thought you guys had a
- 24:52great discussion around that.
- 24:54But one thing that popped
- 24:55into my head is what a way
- 24:58as a first responder to
- 25:00realize how fit the people
- 25:03are that you're going to
- 25:04have to chase after than to
- 25:06partner with them at a
- 25:07competition and see what
- 25:09they can do during the
- 25:10competition in comparison to you.
- 25:14like what a wake up call and
- 25:16an eye opener that could be.
- 25:17Right.
- 25:21So, um, at the police Academy, uh,
- 25:23we get part of the class is, um,
- 25:26everything's based off the
- 25:27Cooper Cooper standards.
- 25:29So the average police officer, um,
- 25:32when they get out of the Academy,
- 25:34not out of the Academy,
- 25:35the average police officer
- 25:36is thirty Cooper standards,
- 25:38about thirty five percent,
- 25:41which is crazy.
- 25:42Um,
- 25:43the average inmate when they
- 25:44get out of prison is at fifty percent.
- 25:47So they're already more
- 25:49physically fit by the
- 25:52studies than the officers
- 25:54when they get out.
- 25:55So that's how the training
- 25:57has changed over the years from, you know,
- 26:02possibly moving to the you know,
- 26:04everyone's involved in MMA
- 26:05and all that stuff as well.
- 26:07So the ground fighting
- 26:07techniques have all been
- 26:09everything's being changed.
- 26:11at the basic level to
- 26:18anticipate the changes
- 26:20around society as well.
- 26:24And just before I forget,
- 26:27we did invite the CrossFit gyms,
- 26:30but we also invited all of
- 26:34the police academies around
- 26:35the state as well,
- 26:37hoping to get them
- 26:39motivated to do this as well.
- 26:43Awesome.
- 26:43One of the reasons I asked
- 26:44you what was available to
- 26:46the first responders in
- 26:47their stations and such is
- 26:51I'm sure stuff is available
- 26:52for the prisoners in the jails.
- 26:55And are we adequately
- 26:59supplying our first
- 27:00responders with the same
- 27:01amount of equipment that
- 27:03we're supplying our
- 27:05detention centers and jails with?
- 27:08Oh, you're slippery slope here.
- 27:12I would say the answer is no.
- 27:15No, we are not.
- 27:16Wow.
- 27:18I think that is, yeah.
- 27:21Wow.
- 27:23The vast majority of
- 27:24agencies have under fifty officers.
- 27:28So your Columbus's, your Cleveland's,
- 27:31your Cincinnati's,
- 27:32those all probably have a
- 27:35significant gym network.
- 27:37Toledo.
- 27:39Springfield,
- 27:40we have one hundred and thirty
- 27:42officers or thirty five
- 27:43officers that we're supposed to have.
- 27:44And we have a gym.
- 27:46But that gym was put
- 27:47together by donations and
- 27:49officers for years.
- 27:52And just within the last five years,
- 27:53I know the city of
- 27:54Springfield bought some
- 27:57items for that gym, which,
- 27:59to my knowledge,
- 28:00they never have done before.
- 28:01So I know they I believe
- 28:02they bought a treadmill and
- 28:04some different things.
- 28:04So but there's also a gym at
- 28:07City Hall that you can work out at.
- 28:09that we're all privy to.
- 28:11So, I mean,
- 28:12it's every everybody's different,
- 28:14but I would say the vast majority, um,
- 28:17they depend on memberships at gyms.
- 28:21So the next difficult
- 28:22question is as a state employee,
- 28:25one of the,
- 28:26one of the frustrations that I
- 28:28find is my boss could
- 28:31change every four years.
- 28:33Yes.
- 28:35as salmon who are trying to
- 28:37swim upstream and do things
- 28:39that are new and innovative
- 28:41and you get buy-in how hard
- 28:44is it with a new
- 28:45administration to keep that
- 28:47buy-in going are there are
- 28:50there this is going to be a
- 28:51multi-faceted question are
- 28:53you putting things in place
- 28:54to the best of your ability
- 28:55to make sure that they stay
- 28:57in place for the next
- 28:59administration or is it
- 29:00just roll the dice and hope
- 29:02that they buy in
- 29:04We are hoping to make
- 29:07everything that we do so
- 29:08successful they can't turn it down.
- 29:13And that is our drive for the next two,
- 29:15two and a half years is to
- 29:17make it so successful that
- 29:18the next administration
- 29:19that comes in says, wow,
- 29:22that's a great program.
- 29:23We need to keep this going.
- 29:24Yeah.
- 29:28And I think honestly, sorry, Scott,
- 29:30as community members,
- 29:31that's something we can do
- 29:33is make sure that we're
- 29:34publicly supporting the
- 29:36efforts our first
- 29:36responders are making on
- 29:38initiatives like this.
- 29:40Sandy's office works so hard
- 29:42to improve physical and
- 29:43mental health of all first responders.
- 29:46I'm what,
- 29:46two hours away from her in a
- 29:48small community,
- 29:48but I have an impact in my
- 29:50community and I can let my community know
- 29:53how important this is and
- 29:54how appreciative I am also,
- 29:57because even locally,
- 29:59our elected officials need
- 30:00to be held accountable for
- 30:01those kinds of things.
- 30:02And if it's something that's
- 30:04highly valued in the public eye,
- 30:06not just first responders eye,
- 30:07but across the board publicly,
- 30:09they're gonna be slower to shut it down.
- 30:12And one way they can show
- 30:13that support is to show up at nine a.m.
- 30:17on September eleventh at
- 30:18Historic Crew Stadium here
- 30:19in Columbus and join in on all the fun.
- 30:22Yes.
- 30:23And it's one hundred percent free.
- 30:25And make sure they register
- 30:26so you can count them.
- 30:27Yes.
- 30:28Yes.
- 30:29And you can do it in your
- 30:30gyms and you can do it at home.
- 30:32But please register as well.
- 30:34Yes.
- 30:34So that we know you're participating.
- 30:36Yes.
- 30:36Because what politicians
- 30:38love are numbers to show success.
- 30:41Absolutely.
- 30:43And then they do repost
- 30:44anything that you use the hashtag with.
- 30:46That's one thing that our
- 30:47small town was like, oh my gosh,
- 30:48we were on the Department
- 30:49of Public Safety social
- 30:50media because we use the hashtag.
- 30:52So that was a really cool feature.
- 30:55Yeah.
- 30:57And that hashtag again is, Sandy?
- 31:00Oh, it is.
- 31:01Well, we've got a few,
- 31:02but it's hashtag ODPSCLIMB.
- 31:08So ODPSCLIMB.
- 31:12All one word.
- 31:13So the initials for Ohio
- 31:14Department of Public Safety.
- 31:16And then the word climb, yes.
- 31:19ODPS climb.
- 31:20Yes.
- 31:22Before I let you go, Debbie,
- 31:24every time I talk to you,
- 31:25you have new things
- 31:27happening with Expanding Horizons.
- 31:30So where are you guys at
- 31:31today and what do you have new happening?
- 31:37In thirty seconds or less,
- 31:38we currently have an
- 31:41uncounted number of
- 31:42probation programs around the country.
- 31:45We are currently in four
- 31:47juvenile correctional
- 31:47facilities in the state of Ohio.
- 31:49We have two more that we
- 31:51hope to have up in the next few months.
- 31:53We also go in just over a week, I think,
- 31:59to get to present at the
- 32:00American Correction
- 32:02Association Conference in Denver,
- 32:04Colorado.
- 32:06So this is our first
- 32:08national opportunity to
- 32:09speak to both juvenile and
- 32:11adult corrections about the
- 32:12importance of community
- 32:14fitness for everyone.
- 32:16And then that might be it for now,
- 32:20I think.
- 32:21You know, a long time ago,
- 32:23Greg Glassman said that the
- 32:26cure for the world's most
- 32:27vexing problem is CrossFit,
- 32:31physical fitness, getting off the couch.
- 32:36And you guys are putting
- 32:37that to practice every single day.
- 32:43You have one,
- 32:44one big story to tell me to
- 32:45prove where that,
- 32:47where that has played out
- 32:48in a way that shows your success.
- 32:52Yeah,
- 32:52actually we have a youth who was able
- 32:55to start the CrossFit program.
- 32:57at Indian River Juvenile
- 32:58Corrections Facility about
- 32:59six weeks before he was released.
- 33:02And he was released in May
- 33:03of twenty twenty four.
- 33:05Part of our program is to
- 33:07provide that same community
- 33:09that they have in the
- 33:10CrossFit program in the facility.
- 33:12when they leave.
- 33:13So we have a reentry section
- 33:15where we work with the parole officer,
- 33:18parents,
- 33:18or whoever the child is going to
- 33:19live with.
- 33:20And we find them a community
- 33:21fitness gym nearby.
- 33:24And we work with the state
- 33:25to make sure that there are
- 33:26no barriers for entry.
- 33:27If they need tennis shoes,
- 33:29we're going to give them tennis shoes.
- 33:29If they need a bus pass,
- 33:31we get them a bus pass
- 33:32figured out so that they
- 33:33can have success.
- 33:35Our
- 33:36our standard is we like to
- 33:38provide the gym membership
- 33:40for them for at least the
- 33:41first three months while
- 33:42they're getting
- 33:43re-established because a
- 33:44lot of these kids have been
- 33:44incarcerated for a number
- 33:45of years and the kid just
- 33:47has to commit to going
- 33:48twice a week and my staff
- 33:50is able to communicate with
- 33:51the youth after they're
- 33:52released for that
- 33:53accountability if they need
- 33:55help beyond the three
- 33:56months we're able to
- 33:58petition the state to do that.
- 34:00But we also have kids who have said, hey,
- 34:02I can pay this much of it,
- 34:03or can I clean the gym in exchange?
- 34:06And we have a youth who made
- 34:07a shout out to CrossFit Expedition.
- 34:10They have a youth who has
- 34:11been going there since May
- 34:12of twenty twenty four.
- 34:14So fifteen plus months still
- 34:16as a member at the gym.
- 34:18He is also on the spectrum.
- 34:21So being part of a group is
- 34:24very difficult for him.
- 34:26And one of the first things
- 34:27his mom came back to the
- 34:29gym to talk to them about
- 34:30was at his work study graduation things,
- 34:34totally the wrong title,
- 34:35but that's essentially what it was.
- 34:36He spoke at that event.
- 34:39So you have a kid who's on
- 34:40the spectrum who does not
- 34:42like to be in groups,
- 34:43who doesn't relate well to
- 34:44people now getting up and speaking.
- 34:47um this was probably within
- 34:49the first six months of him
- 34:50getting released so I still
- 34:52get videos from nicole
- 34:53every few months the gym
- 34:54also an important part of
- 34:55this is the gym embraces
- 34:57the entire family so in the
- 34:58last fifteen months his
- 35:00mom's breast cancer has
- 35:01returned and the gym has
- 35:02been able to surround her
- 35:04with love and support as
- 35:05well which is lacking for
- 35:07parents of kids with struggles
- 35:11That's amazing.
- 35:12And your recidivism rate is
- 35:15like freakishly low.
- 35:19Yes.
- 35:20Compared to everywhere else.
- 35:22Like I want to say Matt told
- 35:23me typically eighties percent.
- 35:27You guys are in the twenties.
- 35:29Roughly.
- 35:30Yeah.
- 35:30So typically depending on the demographic,
- 35:32it's about sixty to eighty percent.
- 35:34But ours hovers around
- 35:35twenty three to twenty five percent.
- 35:37We're actually working with
- 35:39the state to increase our
- 35:41data and have some more
- 35:42specific numbers coming out
- 35:44in the next couple of months.
- 35:45So I'm super excited to hear those.
- 35:47That means your clients or
- 35:50the people you work with
- 35:52have a much greater chance
- 35:54of succeeding once they
- 35:55leave and not returning to
- 35:57a detention center or a
- 35:58prison because of what you
- 36:00guys are doing.
- 36:02because they're choosing to
- 36:03be uh to change their
- 36:05trajectory they're choosing
- 36:06to change the generational
- 36:08curse that their family has
- 36:09been under um they're
- 36:10choosing to change their
- 36:11relationships they're also
- 36:13given um love and support
- 36:15like you've talked about um
- 36:16that they don't typically
- 36:17have at home possibly and
- 36:19so now they have a support
- 36:21system I love people they
- 36:24used to see thank you the
- 36:25people they used to see as
- 36:26enemies that the law
- 36:27enforcement the probation officers that
- 36:30school administration.
- 36:31They used to see those as enemies,
- 36:33and now they can see them as partners.
- 36:35At our gym yesterday with our kids,
- 36:36we had four probation
- 36:37officers and the school
- 36:38resource officer working out with kids.
- 36:40What better role models and
- 36:43relationships that they're
- 36:44forming right there that
- 36:48they've not had the
- 36:49opportunity to do that.
- 36:50They've not had the
- 36:51environment to do that in.
- 36:55I think what's missed in
- 36:56that is not only are you
- 36:57forming that partnership
- 36:58and doing all those things
- 36:59for the kids those
- 37:02probation officers are now
- 37:04fit and it is probably
- 37:07improving their life moving
- 37:09forward as well and
- 37:11improving the county budget
- 37:14right I mean insurance
- 37:15rates probably go down all
- 37:17this all the good stuff right yeah
- 37:22When we talk about,
- 37:23Debbie hasn't really brought it up much,
- 37:24but the Unity games, we had all of,
- 37:29Debbie talked about the Unity games.
- 37:30I don't want to shortchange it.
- 37:32It's just amazing.
- 37:35What we did was we had the
- 37:36four facilities that we're in.
- 37:38We took youth from the four,
- 37:40we bused them to one facility,
- 37:42which is a process in itself,
- 37:44bringing the youth through
- 37:45security and searches and all of that.
- 37:46But we had partners, two youth,
- 37:49and then we brought in law enforcement.
- 37:51So Sandy's office,
- 37:53all the way up.
- 37:54We had Homeland Security, SWAT.
- 37:56I don't even know all of the agencies,
- 37:58but they partnered with the
- 37:59kids and our staff had four workouts.
- 38:02It was a competition and
- 38:03they went head to head,
- 38:05but it was a team of three.
- 38:07The physical fitness is the
- 38:10hook to get them in,
- 38:12especially these kids.
- 38:13right the conversations then
- 38:15that happen around that
- 38:17between events we were we
- 38:18gave them homework like
- 38:19find out what your law
- 38:20enforcement partner does
- 38:21during the day um teaching
- 38:23them again that these are
- 38:24partners these are not your
- 38:26enemies first time ever
- 38:29first time thought for
- 38:30those kids um these are
- 38:32people who want to be part
- 38:34of your life for good not
- 38:36to punish you to grow you
- 38:40And the camaraderie there with,
- 38:41between the officers,
- 38:42it didn't matter that they
- 38:44were in juvenile prisons
- 38:45and it didn't matter any of that.
- 38:47It was, you're my teammate,
- 38:49let's go win this thing.
- 38:50So I should put a shout out
- 38:52because if I don't, I might get fired,
- 38:54but Director Wilson and his team won.
- 38:59But it was, it was hard fought and it was,
- 39:04it was a hard fought competition.
- 39:06My goal was not to finish last.
- 39:08And I did not, so I was happy.
- 39:12That's my goal with every day in class.
- 39:14Every day.
- 39:15Every day in class, that's my goal.
- 39:18I like to say you get your money's worth.
- 39:21You're using the entire time
- 39:23that's allotted.
- 39:24You're getting your money's worth.
- 39:26Yeah,
- 39:26until they have to keep the lights on
- 39:28for an extra hour for me to come in.
- 39:33But yeah,
- 39:34I think that's most of us are
- 39:36trying not to be the last person done.
- 39:38But if you are,
- 39:39you're cheered on like nobody else,
- 39:40right?
- 39:41Absolutely.
- 39:43So the best way to support
- 39:44these ladies is on September eleventh,
- 39:47show up in Columbus at
- 39:48historic cruise stadium, go do some yoga,
- 39:51go do some walking,
- 39:53climb some stairs or do some CrossFit.
- 39:56Hang out with them, register,
- 39:58and partner up with your best friend,
- 40:01partner up with a first responder,
- 40:03show up at the event,
- 40:05do everything you can to
- 40:06get those numbers up so we
- 40:07can show what these ladies
- 40:09are doing every single day
- 40:11to make our state better here in Ohio,
- 40:13and in turn, sharing that with the world.
- 40:16Exactly.
- 40:18So in order to register,
- 40:20just so if you can put this
- 40:21out there as well,
- 40:22if you go to the Ohio
- 40:23Department of Public Safety's website,
- 40:26the link is on that website.
- 40:28And then there's also a QR code.
- 40:30There's a video you can watch.
- 40:31There's a whole lot of stuff
- 40:32on there you can look at to register.
- 40:36Yeah,
- 40:37I tried to put the links into Sevan's
- 40:39chat.
- 40:40YouTube does not like links.
- 40:43They do not,
- 40:44or I would put it in the
- 40:45comment and the thing,
- 40:46but the section below,
- 40:48but they do not like me
- 40:49putting links in there for some reason.
- 40:51So I'll try again, but yeah.
- 40:56DM me.
- 40:57I'll send you to these lovely ladies.
- 40:59I have the link.
- 41:00I can send it right.
- 41:01You have our emails.
- 41:02You can send our emails, whatever.
