- 0:00Speaker 1: Good morning, faithful listeners, Welcome to the Bible Explained podcast
- 0:04Speaker 1: on this lovely Monday morning. So guess what Today is
- 0:15Speaker 1: the last episode of season nine. It seemed like last
- 0:19Speaker 1: week I was still only halfway through First Chronicles, and
- 0:23Speaker 1: I did not think that season nine was gonna come
- 0:26Speaker 1: up as quickly as it did. But then we had
- 0:28Speaker 1: a couple of days where we read like three chapters
- 0:31Speaker 1: every day, and then suddenly Chronicles was just over. So
- 0:35Speaker 1: we're gonna finish up First Chronicles twenty nine today verses
- 0:38Speaker 1: ten through thirty, and we'll finish out season nine, and
- 0:43Speaker 1: then Wednesday we'll start season ten. I'm not gonna take
- 0:45Speaker 1: a break or anything like that. I'm just gonna jump
- 0:48Speaker 1: right into season ten with Second Chronicles. But for right now,
- 0:52Speaker 1: let's go ahead and read First Chronicles twenty nine, starting
- 0:54Speaker 1: in verse ten. Grab your cup of coffee or your
- 0:56Speaker 1: cup of tea this morning, and let's read scripture together.
- 0:59Speaker 1: As per usual, I will be reading from the web. Therefore,
- 1:03Speaker 1: David blessed Yahweh before all the assembly, and David said,
- 1:06Speaker 1: you are blessed Yahweh, the God of Israel, our father
- 1:09Speaker 1: forever and ever yours. Yahweh is the greatness, the power,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the glory, the victory, and the majesty. For all that
- 1:15Speaker 1: is in the heavens and the earth is yours. Yours
- 1:17Speaker 1: is the kingdom, Yahweh, And you are exalted as head
- 1:20Speaker 1: above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and
- 1:23Speaker 1: you rule over all. In your hand is power and might.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It is in your hand to make great and to
- 1:29Speaker 1: give strength to all. Now, therefore, our God, we thank
- 1:32Speaker 1: you and praise your glorious name. But who am I
- 1:35Speaker 1: and what is my people that we should be able
- 1:37Speaker 1: to offer so willingly as this, For all things come
- 1:41Speaker 1: from you, and we have given you of your own.
- 1:44Speaker 1: For we are strangers before you, and foreigners, as all
- 1:47Speaker 1: our fathers were. Our days on the earth are as
- 1:49Speaker 1: a shadow, and there is no remaining. Yahweh are God.
- 1:53Speaker 1: All this store that we have prepared to build you
- 1:55Speaker 1: a house for your holy name comes from your hand
- 1:58Speaker 1: and is all your own. You know also, my God,
- 2:00Speaker 1: that you try the heart and have pleasure in uprightness.
- 2:04Speaker 1: As for me, in the uprightness of my heart, I
- 2:06Speaker 1: have willingly offered all these things. Now I have seen
- 2:09Speaker 1: with joy your people who are present here, offer willingly
- 2:13Speaker 1: to you Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: of Israel. Our fathers, keep this desire forever in the
- 2:20Speaker 1: thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare their
- 2:22Speaker 1: heart for you. And give to Solomon my son, a
- 2:25Speaker 1: perfect heart to keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and to do all these things, and to build the
- 2:31Speaker 1: palace for which I have made provision. Then David said
- 2:35Speaker 1: to all the assembly, now bless Yahweh, your God. All
- 2:38Speaker 1: the assembly blessed Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: bowed down their heads and prostrated themselves before Yahweh and
- 2:44Speaker 1: the King. They sacrificed sacrifices to Yahweh and offered burnt
- 2:48Speaker 1: offerings to Yahweh on the next day. After that day,
- 2:51Speaker 1: even one thousand bulls, one thousand rams, and one thousand
- 2:55Speaker 1: lambs with their drink offerings and sacrifices in abundance for
- 2:58Speaker 1: all Israel, and they ate and drank before Yahweh on
- 3:01Speaker 1: that day with great gladness. They made Solomon, the son
- 3:04Speaker 1: of David king the second time, and anointed him before
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yahweh to be prince and Zadig to be the priest.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Then Solomon sat on the throne of Yahweh as king
- 3:13Speaker 1: instead of David his father, and prospered, and all Israel
- 3:17Speaker 1: obeyed him. All the princes, the mighty men, and also
- 3:20Speaker 1: all the sons of King David submitted themselves to Solomon
- 3:23Speaker 1: the King. Yahweh magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of
- 3:26Speaker 1: all Israel, and gave to him such royal majesty as
- 3:29Speaker 1: had not been on any king before him in Israel.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Now David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.
- 3:35Speaker 1: The time that he reigned over Israel was forty years,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and he reigned seven years in Hebron, and he reigned
- 3:40Speaker 1: thirty three years in Jerusalem. He died at a good
- 3:43Speaker 1: old age, full of days, riches and honor, and Solomon
- 3:47Speaker 1: his son reigned in his place. Now the acts of
- 3:49Speaker 1: David the King first and last behold. They are written
- 3:52Speaker 1: in the history of Samuel the Seer, and in the
- 3:55Speaker 1: history of Nathan the Prophet, and in the history of
- 3:57Speaker 1: Gad the Seer, with all his reign and his might,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and the events that involved him Israel and all the
- 4:03Speaker 1: kingdoms of the lands. In the previous chapters we were
- 4:07Speaker 1: talking about how David was acquiring all of the building
- 4:10Speaker 1: materials for the temple to God. David was kind of
- 4:14Speaker 1: obsessed over this project. He really in his lifetime wanted
- 4:18Speaker 1: to be able to build the temple. But God had
- 4:20Speaker 1: actually told David, no, you're not building it. Instead, your
- 4:25Speaker 1: son is going to build me a house. So David
- 4:27Speaker 1: took that to mean that Solomon was going to be
- 4:30Speaker 1: the one to build this temple. So David acquired all
- 4:34Speaker 1: of the things needed in order for Solomon to smoothly
- 4:38Speaker 1: be able to build this temple after David had died.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Because David knew that he was dying very soon, like
- 4:43Speaker 1: he was old at this point in time, and before
- 4:46Speaker 1: he died, he decided that Solomon was going to have
- 4:49Speaker 1: a smooth transition into being the king and into building
- 4:54Speaker 1: this temple that David believed was very necessary for the
- 5:00Speaker 1: virtual well being of Israel after he was gone. So
- 5:03Speaker 1: once David acquires all of the stuff needed to build
- 5:06Speaker 1: the temple, he hands the plans over to Solomon. He
- 5:10Speaker 1: donates some of his own gold and silver from his
- 5:14Speaker 1: treasury to Solomon for the building of this temple, and
- 5:17Speaker 1: then all of the leaders of Israel listening to David's
- 5:20Speaker 1: speech at this time also donated a whole bunch of
- 5:24Speaker 1: silver and gold and bronze and iron as well, specifically
- 5:27Speaker 1: dedicated for the building of the temple. David is so
- 5:30Speaker 1: overwhelmed by the generosity of the leaders of Israel that
- 5:34Speaker 1: he gives a prayer blessing everybody there and also worshiping God.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And that is where we leave off today. In verse ten,
- 5:42Speaker 1: therefore David blessed Yahweh before all the assembly, and David said,
- 5:45Speaker 1: you are blessed Yahweh, the God of Israel, our Father,
- 5:48Speaker 1: forever and ever. Yours Yahweh is the greatness, the power,
- 5:51Speaker 1: the glory, the victory, and the majesty. For all that
- 5:55Speaker 1: is in the heavens and on the earth is yours.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yours is the Kingdom, Yahweh. And you are exalted as
- 5:59Speaker 1: head above all. Both riches and honor come from you,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and you rule over all. It is in your hand
- 6:05Speaker 1: to make great and to give strength to all. You know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: David was like the master at prayer. Most of the
- 6:12Speaker 1: psalms were written by David. I think he wrote the
- 6:15Speaker 1: majority of them. Man, he was such a good prayer,
- 6:18Speaker 1: Like have you ever been around somebody that's just a
- 6:20Speaker 1: good prayer? And like you're almost jealous over their fantastic
- 6:24Speaker 1: prayers at least I am. I'm like, man, I wish
- 6:27Speaker 1: that I could pray that good in public. I feel
- 6:31Speaker 1: like people probably felt the same way about David when
- 6:34Speaker 1: they heard this guy's prayers, like he was so good
- 6:36Speaker 1: at praying. So let's break down this prayer. He says,
- 6:39Speaker 1: you are blessed Yahweh, the God of Israel, our father,
- 6:43Speaker 1: forever and ever. So that's a really important phrase, actually,
- 6:47Speaker 1: first and foremost, when you see somebody saying you are blessed, Yahweh,
- 6:52Speaker 1: that does not mean that we are trying to give
- 6:54Speaker 1: blessings to God, like the way we think of blessings.
- 6:57Speaker 1: The word blessings actually means to be set apart, similarly
- 7:02Speaker 1: to the word holy. So when David says that God
- 7:05Speaker 1: is blessed, he's saying that God is holy. God is
- 7:08Speaker 1: set apart. God is above every other god on this planet.
- 7:13Speaker 1: He is sovereign, he is supreme. So he says, you
- 7:17Speaker 1: are blessed Yahweh, the God of Israel, our father, forever
- 7:22Speaker 1: and ever. That's the first time in scripture we see
- 7:26Speaker 1: somebody calling God their father. And we know in the
- 7:31Speaker 1: New Testament that's how Jesus actually commanded his disciples to pray,
- 7:35Speaker 1: all of us to pray. Rather, we were to pray
- 7:39Speaker 1: our Father, who is in heaven, Hallowed be thy name,
- 7:43Speaker 1: that kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as
- 7:46Speaker 1: it is in heaven. Jesus told people to pray our
- 7:50Speaker 1: father because that's a very personal thing. If someone is
- 7:54Speaker 1: your loving father, that means you can go to them
- 7:57Speaker 1: with any kind of problem whatsoever. If you have a
- 8:00Speaker 1: good relationship with your dad, you feel comfortable going up
- 8:04Speaker 1: to your dad, talking to him about your day, telling
- 8:07Speaker 1: him what's going on in your life, and even asking
- 8:10Speaker 1: for help if you need it. A father is an
- 8:13Speaker 1: important and personal figure in each person's life. Everybody, every
- 8:19Speaker 1: single person on earth needs a father. And that is
- 8:22Speaker 1: why David considers God his father Israel's father. And this
- 8:28Speaker 1: is the first time in scripture that somebody gets that.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And then in verse eleven, David says, yours Yahweh is
- 8:36Speaker 1: the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Think about who that's coming from, you know, David at
- 8:44Speaker 1: this point in time was one of the most powerful
- 8:47Speaker 1: kings in the ancient world. Like Israel was kind of
- 8:50Speaker 1: at the top of their game. Toward the end of
- 8:51Speaker 1: David's life, Solomon was one of the greatest kings ever
- 8:56Speaker 1: to live in the ancient world. Other kings were coming
- 8:59Speaker 1: to salve for advice, and David paved the way for that. David,
- 9:04Speaker 1: being one of the most powerful kings in the world,
- 9:09Speaker 1: could say that God was truly the one who had
- 9:13Speaker 1: all the power, who had all the glory, the greatness,
- 9:16Speaker 1: the victory, and the majesty. These would be things that
- 9:20Speaker 1: people would think the king, the earthly king, had, But
- 9:23Speaker 1: David says, no, I don't really have these things. God.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It is you who has all of these things. You
- 9:30Speaker 1: are greater than I or any other king ever will be.
- 9:35Speaker 1: For all that is in the heavens and in the
- 9:36Speaker 1: earth is yours. Yours is the Kingdom Yahweh, and you
- 9:41Speaker 1: are exalted as head above all. And David continues in
- 9:45Speaker 1: verse twelve with this really beautiful prayer. He says, both
- 9:48Speaker 1: riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all.
- 9:52Speaker 1: In your hand is power and might. It is your
- 9:56Speaker 1: hand to make great and to give strength to all.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Now theref for our God, we thank you and praise
- 10:02Speaker 1: your glorious name. But who am I and what is
- 10:06Speaker 1: my people? That we should be able to offer so
- 10:09Speaker 1: willingly as this, For all things come from you, and
- 10:12Speaker 1: we have given you of your own. For we are
- 10:15Speaker 1: strangers before you, and foreigners, as were all of our fathers.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and
- 10:21Speaker 1: there is no remaining. So notice how David starts this prayer,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and he does this quite often in the Psalms as well.
- 10:28Speaker 1: He starts the prayer by giving honor and glory to God,
- 10:33Speaker 1: once again very similar to how the Lord's prayer in
- 10:36Speaker 1: the New Testament was done. Our Father, who is in heaven,
- 10:41Speaker 1: hallowed be thy name, that is us giving honor to God.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And then David in verse fourteen, goes from giving honor
- 10:49Speaker 1: to God to making himself and all the people he's
- 10:54Speaker 1: praying for humble. He says, who am I and what
- 10:58Speaker 1: is my people? That we should be able to offer
- 11:00Speaker 1: so willingly as this. All things come from you. We
- 11:04Speaker 1: have given you of your own. We are strangers before you.
- 11:07Speaker 1: We are foreigners as our fathers were. Our days on
- 11:09Speaker 1: the earth are as a shadow, and there is no remaining.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And you guessed it. The Lord's prayer follows that same
- 11:16Speaker 1: formula First, it starts out by giving honor and glory
- 11:20Speaker 1: to God, and then the second part is humbling ourselves
- 11:23Speaker 1: before God, admitting that we need him. Your kingdom Come,
- 11:28Speaker 1: Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Give us this day our daily bread. That part of
- 11:35Speaker 1: the Lord's prayer is us admitting our need for God
- 11:39Speaker 1: and humbling ourselves before him, saying, God, your will is supreme.
- 11:44Speaker 1: You do what you're gonna do, and we have complete
- 11:47Speaker 1: dependence on you, even for our daily meal. Everything comes
- 11:52Speaker 1: from you. And that's what David is saying in his
- 11:54Speaker 1: prayer as well. It's like following the exact formula of
- 11:58Speaker 1: the Lord's Prayer. It's crazy. He says in verse sixteen, Yahwegh,
- 12:02Speaker 1: our God. All this store that we have prepared to
- 12:05Speaker 1: build you a house for your holy name, comes from
- 12:07Speaker 1: your hand and is all your own. I know also,
- 12:11Speaker 1: my God, that you try the heart and have pleasure
- 12:14Speaker 1: in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I have willingly offered all these things. Now I have
- 12:21Speaker 1: seen with joy your people who are present here, offer
- 12:24Speaker 1: willingly to you, Yahwegh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac
- 12:28Speaker 1: and of Israel. Our Fathers, keep this desire forever in
- 12:31Speaker 1: the thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare
- 12:33Speaker 1: their heart for you, And give Solomon my son a
- 12:37Speaker 1: perfect heart to keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes,
- 12:41Speaker 1: and to do all these things, and to build the
- 12:42Speaker 1: palace for which I have made provision. Isn't that amazing
- 12:46Speaker 1: because that last part also once again follows the formula
- 12:51Speaker 1: of the Lord's prayer, which is to admit our sin
- 12:54Speaker 1: and turn our hearts towards God. Forgive us our trespasses
- 12:59Speaker 1: as we forgive them those who trespass against us. Lead
- 13:03Speaker 1: us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. I'm
- 13:07Speaker 1: just kind of flabbergasted that David's prayer right here completely
- 13:11Speaker 1: aligns with the Lord's prayer. It's just absolutely crazy. That
- 13:15Speaker 1: shows what a relationship with God can do for each
- 13:19Speaker 1: individual person. And what I mean by that is, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 1: David was not the Messiah. He was not sinless by
- 13:25Speaker 1: any stretch of the imagination. I mean, if you look
- 13:29Speaker 1: at his track record, he was a liar, He was
- 13:33Speaker 1: a cheater, an adulterer, he was a murderer, He got
- 13:38Speaker 1: complacent in his life, he was a pretty bad father,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and a terrible husband. He did not have a great
- 13:46Speaker 1: track record going for him. But the one thing that
- 13:49Speaker 1: he did was that he had a heart for God.
- 13:54Speaker 1: One of the things that drives me nuts that a
- 13:56Speaker 1: lot of Christians often do is that they believe that
- 14:01Speaker 1: people who are in the Bible just kind of floated
- 14:04Speaker 1: on the earth in like sinless perfection and we can't
- 14:08Speaker 1: say anything bad about them. Ever, No, they were human beings.
- 14:12Speaker 1: They had problems, And it's comforting to think that they
- 14:17Speaker 1: were human beings and had problems because when we sin
- 14:21Speaker 1: or go astray or fall short, and we can look
- 14:25Speaker 1: at these guys and be like, oh wow, they had redemption.
- 14:29Speaker 1: They still were able to get close with God and
- 14:31Speaker 1: have a relationship with God in spite of all of
- 14:33Speaker 1: their crazy sins that they committed. And David, who was
- 14:38Speaker 1: a man after God's own heart, was given understanding of
- 14:43Speaker 1: how to pray before Jesus even walked the earth, showing
- 14:49Speaker 1: people how to pray. How did David get that insight
- 14:54Speaker 1: and that knowledge It was because he had a heart
- 14:58Speaker 1: for God. Any one of us, if we have a
- 15:02Speaker 1: heart for God, if we are people after God's own heart,
- 15:06Speaker 1: we also can gain that kind of knowledge. From the
- 15:09Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our counselor. He teaches
- 15:14Speaker 1: us how to read the scriptures. He teaches us how
- 15:17Speaker 1: to pray. He teaches us how to get close to God.
- 15:21Speaker 1: So David, who existed centuries before Jesus was even born,
- 15:26Speaker 1: if he can understand how to pray something similar to
- 15:30Speaker 1: the Lord's prayer without being taught how to do it,
- 15:34Speaker 1: that shows the power of the Holy Spirit. That shows
- 15:37Speaker 1: that you and I also can have that same understanding
- 15:40Speaker 1: because we have been given the Holy Spirit as Christians.
- 15:44Speaker 1: If we believe in Jesus, we have been given the
- 15:47Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, and he gives us knowledge and understanding of
- 15:51Speaker 1: how to get close to God. I think it's a
- 15:54Speaker 1: huge travesty when church of leaders tell their congregants that
- 15:59Speaker 1: they cannot understand the Bible, that they have to listen
- 16:02Speaker 1: to their pastor, or their priest or their elder in
- 16:05Speaker 1: order to actually understand what the scriptures have to say.
- 16:08Speaker 1: That is a travesty, and that is a deception straight
- 16:11Speaker 1: from Satan. The reason I say that is because anybody
- 16:16Speaker 1: who has the Holy Spirit can also read and understand
- 16:20Speaker 1: what the scriptures are saying. The Holy Spirit gives us
- 16:24Speaker 1: that power and he might be like, well, Jen, what's
- 16:27Speaker 1: the point of pastors? Then, Like, if that's the case,
- 16:30Speaker 1: why did God even give us pastors and elders and
- 16:33Speaker 1: priests and leaders and whoever else to teach us the
- 16:36Speaker 1: Bible if we can just understand it on our own. Well,
- 16:39Speaker 1: God gave us those people because they help us on
- 16:42Speaker 1: that journey of understanding. They comb through the scriptures. That
- 16:45Speaker 1: is like what they do for a living is they
- 16:48Speaker 1: comb through the scriptures. They read everything, they understand it
- 16:51Speaker 1: pretty well, and they teach other people also how to
- 16:56Speaker 1: read and understand the Bible. But the problem comes in
- 17:00Speaker 1: is when they claim that they are the authority of
- 17:03Speaker 1: what scripture has to say, that you can only listen
- 17:06Speaker 1: to them, that you should not read the Bible for yourself,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you should only listen to them. That is when the
- 17:12Speaker 1: problem comes in, and that's when you know actually that
- 17:15Speaker 1: you're kind of in a cult. Is when your church
- 17:18Speaker 1: authority cannot handle questions or critiques, they shut you down,
- 17:25Speaker 1: They kick you out of the church, they ostracize you.
- 17:27Speaker 1: In some cases, they might say that you have a demon,
- 17:30Speaker 1: or that you have a deception, or I don't know
- 17:33Speaker 1: something along those lines. That's when you know that you're
- 17:36Speaker 1: in a cult. But I'm not saying across the board
- 17:39Speaker 1: you shouldn't listen to your pastors. You absolutely should listen
- 17:42Speaker 1: to your pastor. But don't fall for the lie that
- 17:45Speaker 1: you are not smart enough to understand the Bible if
- 17:48Speaker 1: you read it. Don't fall for that. That is not true.
- 17:52Speaker 1: If Jen who is an uneducated college drop out who
- 17:57Speaker 1: became a hairdresser, can understand and teach the Bible on
- 18:01Speaker 1: this podcast, anybody, any single person who has the Holy Spirit,
- 18:06Speaker 1: can read and grow in understanding of the Bible. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: it really is a growing process. You know, I'm smarter
- 18:13Speaker 1: now when it comes to the Bible than I was
- 18:16Speaker 1: five years ago, and I still don't know everything and
- 18:18Speaker 1: never will. It's a growing process. So don't beat yourself up.
- 18:22Speaker 1: If you don't understand everything right away. That doesn't mean
- 18:25Speaker 1: that you are stupid, That doesn't mean that you don't
- 18:27Speaker 1: have the Holy Spirit. It just means that you need
- 18:29Speaker 1: to study the Bible a little bit more. Continuing to
- 18:33Speaker 1: finish up season nine, in verse twenty, here it says,
- 18:37Speaker 1: then David said to all the assembly, now bless Yahweh
- 18:40Speaker 1: your God. And it says all the assembly blessed Yahweh,
- 18:43Speaker 1: the God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads
- 18:46Speaker 1: and prostrated themselves before Yahweh and the King. Now that
- 18:49Speaker 1: does not mean right there that they worshiped David, but
- 18:52Speaker 1: that they prostrated themselves in front of David worshiping God
- 18:57Speaker 1: is what it says. They blessed Yahweh. They sacrificed sacrifices
- 19:01Speaker 1: to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings to Yahweh on the
- 19:04Speaker 1: next day. After that day, even one thousand bulls, one
- 19:07Speaker 1: thousand rams, and one thousand lambs with their drink offerings
- 19:11Speaker 1: and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel, and they ate
- 19:14Speaker 1: and drank before Yahweh on that day with great gladness.
- 19:17Speaker 1: They made Solomon, the son of David king the second
- 19:19Speaker 1: time and anointed him before Yahweh to be prince and
- 19:22Speaker 1: Zadig to be the priest. So, after David gives this
- 19:26Speaker 1: speech handing the plans over to Solomon, making this beautiful prayer,
- 19:31Speaker 1: David encourages all of Israel to worship God. And so
- 19:35Speaker 1: Israel does worship God. And then they had this big
- 19:38Speaker 1: feast the next day where they also anointed Solomon for
- 19:42Speaker 1: the second time because the first time that Solomon was anointed,
- 19:46Speaker 1: which is talked about in First King's Chapter one, they
- 19:49Speaker 1: had to do it very very quickly and without like
- 19:51Speaker 1: a big party, because one of David's other sons, at
- 19:55Speaker 1: in Nija, was trying to take the throne for himself,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and ad Niga basically tried to anoint himself as king
- 20:05Speaker 1: but did not succeed because David heard about this plot,
- 20:08Speaker 1: and so he quickly has the priest and everybody else
- 20:12Speaker 1: anoint Solomon to be the king. And that's why it
- 20:15Speaker 1: was done very quickly, because they're trying to make sure
- 20:18Speaker 1: that ad Nija did not become the next king, but
- 20:20Speaker 1: that Solomon actually did. So now it's done the right
- 20:24Speaker 1: way in our passage for today Solomon is anointed for
- 20:28Speaker 1: the second time. They made all of these sacrifices, had
- 20:31Speaker 1: this big feast, which probably a lot of these sacrifices,
- 20:34Speaker 1: by the way, were peace offerings, and that included like
- 20:38Speaker 1: a meal afterward where the people would give part of
- 20:41Speaker 1: the animal to the priest so that the priest could
- 20:43Speaker 1: offer that animal to God, and then the rest of
- 20:46Speaker 1: the animal, the meat would go home to the people
- 20:50Speaker 1: and they would have this big celebration, and that offering
- 20:53Speaker 1: was specifically to have thanksgiving, peace and fellowship with God,
- 20:58Speaker 1: almost like you're sharing a meal with him, if that
- 21:01Speaker 1: makes sense. And then in verse twenty three it says
- 21:03Speaker 1: that Solomon sat on the throne of Yahweh as king
- 21:06Speaker 1: instead of David his father, and prospered and all Israel
- 21:09Speaker 1: obeyed him. So that's probably talking about after David had died.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I don't believe that Solomon took the throne before David
- 21:16Speaker 1: had died. I do believe that David was king up
- 21:19Speaker 1: until the day of his death. But I really like
- 21:21Speaker 1: the way that this is worded here, that Solomon sat
- 21:24Speaker 1: on the throne of Yahweh as king, still showing that
- 21:29Speaker 1: God was supposed to be Israel's king the entire time.
- 21:32Speaker 1: It was Yahweh's throne, but because the Israelites rejected God
- 21:37Speaker 1: as their king, Yahweh shared his throne with sinful human beings.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Then in verse twenty four, all the princes, the mighty men,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and also all the sons of King David submitted themselves
- 21:49Speaker 1: to Solomon the king. Yahweh magnified Solomon exceedingly in the
- 21:52Speaker 1: sight of all Israel, gave him royal majesty as had
- 21:55Speaker 1: not been on any king before him in Israel. And
- 21:59Speaker 1: then in verses twenty six through thirty, it gives a
- 22:02Speaker 1: very very quick synopsis of David's life. It says he
- 22:06Speaker 1: reigned over all Israel. The time that he reigned over
- 22:08Speaker 1: Israel was forty years. He reigned at seven years in Hebron,
- 22:12Speaker 1: and he reigned thirty three years in Jerusalem. He died
- 22:15Speaker 1: at a good old age, full of days, rich as
- 22:17Speaker 1: in honor, and Solomon, his son, reigned in his place.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Now the acts of David the King first and last, behold.
- 22:23Speaker 1: They are written in the history of Samuel the Seer,
- 22:26Speaker 1: in the history of Nathan the Prophet, and in the
- 22:28Speaker 1: history of God the Seer, with all his reign and
- 22:31Speaker 1: his might in the events that involved him Israel and
- 22:34Speaker 1: all the kingdoms of the land. Most of those books
- 22:38Speaker 1: that we have, except for the Book of Samuel, were
- 22:41Speaker 1: probably lost to history. We do not have the history
- 22:44Speaker 1: of Nathan the Prophet or the history of God the
- 22:46Speaker 1: Seer unless some of that stuff was actually written down
- 22:50Speaker 1: in the beginning of the kings. We don't really have
- 22:54Speaker 1: that information. But just because it was lost to history
- 22:57Speaker 1: does not mean that the Bible is not complete. I
- 23:00Speaker 1: think that one of the silliest arguments that people use
- 23:03Speaker 1: is that, oh, the Bible is not complete because it
- 23:05Speaker 1: mentions all of these other books that are no longer around,
- 23:10Speaker 1: no longer relevant, or have been lost to history or
- 23:12Speaker 1: destroyed or something. So the reason that's such a silly
- 23:15Speaker 1: argument is because no one would ever say any other
- 23:18Speaker 1: book was incomplete because it references another book. Oh, because
- 23:25Speaker 1: every single book is not in the Bible that has
- 23:27Speaker 1: existed in history. The Bible is not complete. No, the
- 23:31Speaker 1: Bible is complete. We have the information about David that
- 23:34Speaker 1: we needed to have, and it is written about both
- 23:38Speaker 1: in First Chronicles and also for Samuel. So this is
- 23:41Speaker 1: a really beautiful conclusion to First Chronicles and kind of
- 23:45Speaker 1: like an end of an era because we've been talking
- 23:48Speaker 1: about David so much, but this is the end, Like,
- 23:51Speaker 1: we're not going to be really discussing David too much
- 23:54Speaker 1: longer until we get into the Psalms, which right now,
- 23:57Speaker 1: the members are already in the Psalms. By the way,
- 24:00Speaker 1: if you want to become a member and listen to
