- 0:07We hope you enjoy the show. Hello and welcome to the long
- 0:17and short of it. The podcast where we discuss
- 0:20each of the games on the Metacritic top 100 list.
- 0:24My name is Dan and I'm joined by mrs.
- 0:26Lawrence, welcome to the podcast, welcome to the podcast.
- 0:30First everyone, a very special episode today, but first, how
- 0:36are you doing? I'm well, it's a Friday
- 0:38afternoon. I believe we're about to go into
- 0:41a heat wave in the UK, which is absolutely disgusting, and I'm
- 0:44not looking forward to but I am most well, are you?
- 0:49Well I am well then we are all well.
- 0:54Also glad it's a Friday and I am off gallivanting for Monday,
- 1:00Tuesday, Wednesday. Next week, I'm climbing scaffold
- 1:04Pike, which is a mountain in the Lake District so that will be a
- 1:07lot of fun. I've heard similar height to
- 1:11Everest. Yes, slide.
- 1:14Some some say more difficult, more of a difficult climbing
- 1:17Everest as well. I believe?
- 1:18Yes, yes. That's right as hard as Dark
- 1:21Souls. That's right.
- 1:22But not quite as hard. Almost no, that would be silly.
- 1:26Yes, quite but alas I'm sure. Okay.
- 1:30I'm sure you'll do very well. I will climb up and I will roll
- 1:32down. Excellent.
- 1:33Make sure to take your kit kat for a little bit of sugar.
- 1:36I will climb up and I will Glide down which is are not to today's
- 1:42game, okay? So just today is an episode that
- 1:46we've been talking about since probably the Ocarina of Time
- 1:50episode and unsurprisingly. It's a Zelda game.
- 1:54The a Zelda game we have today is Number 9 on the Metacritic,
- 2:00top 100 list, the Legend of Zelda breath of the wild with a
- 2:06score of 97 and it was released on the Nintendo switch alongside
- 2:11the Wii U in the year, 2017. Okay, big one.
- 2:19Do you have any history with this game?
- 2:22As with, every Zelda game that we've talked about on this list?
- 2:25I always kind of circle back around and prerequisite as
- 2:29Someone that's not massively a Zelda fan, they're never really
- 2:32games for me. I suppose, I've now played all
- 2:36of the the Zelda games that were on this list.
- 2:39The only one in the mainline series at I haven't played is
- 2:43Skyward Sword because that isn't in the top 100 so I downloaded
- 2:50breath of the wild about a year ago maybe because I had a
- 2:53hankering to play an open world game and you know it was there
- 2:56and it was on slight offer. Her as much as Nintendo off like
- 3:00will drop prices on its on its first party games.
- 3:03It doesn't really drop the cost by much but I'd Bots path of the
- 3:08wild and told you about it. And you you suggested to hold
- 3:11off and maybe wait until until we got to it for the podcast.
- 3:17So this time around is my first time playing this game and I
- 3:23know a lot about it because you know, all of the rave reviews
- 3:26and stuff from 2017. Hard to avoid.
- 3:29I knew new Affair bet about it ahead of time but yes this was
- 3:33my first time playing it which I don't believe is the case for
- 3:37you. No.
- 3:40So I don't even know where to begin.
- 3:42You've never played this game before and you didn't like it.
- 3:46No, awful game, get off the list.
- 3:49Let's wrap up the episode. There we go.
- 3:54So this is a really Important game for Nintendo because it was
- 4:01tied directly with the switch launch.
- 4:03And I know originally, it was a Wii U release only, and then
- 4:11Nintendo cut the Wii U ehre shorts and started work on the
- 4:15switch. And they decided to release this
- 4:18game. Alongside the switch in a
- 4:20similar fashion to when Twilight Princess came out.
- 4:27I the success that the switch has seen today, I think it all
- 4:34started here with breadth of the wild and I distinctly remember
- 4:38that III leading up to the switch and breadth of the Wilds,
- 4:44release or the E3 beforehand and Nintendo came along and you had
- 4:50Sony and you had Microsoft and you had all these other game
- 4:52companies that showed their raft of games.
- 4:55Nintendo came along, With breath of the wild, that was it.
- 4:58So to say that it felt like everything was resting on breath
- 5:04of the wild, I feel could almost be an understatement and the
- 5:08intent Nintendo needed. The switch to succeed, didn't
- 5:10it? Because the Wii U, I mean, it
- 5:14wasn't a complete failure, but it was definitely a flop.
- 5:17Compared to what the expectations were against it, I
- 5:20suppose. So there's a lot riding on the
- 5:22in Sewickley needed and and yes, They could have probably had
- 5:28another couple of failures but it wouldn't have.
- 5:31I mean it is a slippery slope, isn't it?
- 5:33And Sega I'm sure can attest to that.
- 5:36Yeah, so they needed a win and it felt like it was all resting
- 5:42on this game and the switch and I remember coverage of breath of
- 5:50the wild from that III and everyone came out saying it
- 5:53stole the show. So I was quite significantly
- 5:57hyped for this game before it came out.
- 6:00Something I don't usually do in the modern era.
- 6:03I pre-ordered my switch. I pre-ordered the special
- 6:05edition of breath of the wild and I was off the week, they
- 6:11came out. I don't think I was off just
- 6:13because it came out, but it happens to coincide.
- 6:15And I I got my switch, got breath of the wild and sat down
- 6:20and started playing and that journey through breath of the
- 6:26wild lasted. Predict a couple of months
- 6:30before I close the book on it, I played 155 hours of it which not
- 6:37a bad run time that as much as some people playing this game,
- 6:40but a lot more than some people playing this game.
- 6:45And by the end of it, I kind of had done almost anything
- 6:50everything. I'd I'd found 117 of the 120
- 6:56shrines. I scoured the map for the The
- 6:59three couldn't find them. I've since found one more of
- 7:02them, but I've still missing two, which must be really tucked
- 7:06away. And one of the things with this
- 7:08game was that I refuse to look at any guys, I wanted to
- 7:11explore. I wanted to discover this game
- 7:13on my own. And the only thing I really
- 7:17didn't do was call Rocks because it was nine.
- 7:20That was something of a Monster. Yeah, well, I wasn't gonna do
- 7:24that to myself. I loved it and I recall, The
- 7:29final I'd say the final day of playing this game, I was just
- 7:35getting ready for the final fight with Gannon and catching
- 7:40bugs near Hyrule castle. And then you've got the Epic
- 7:47spoilers obviously. And I know you haven't got to
- 7:50this point, but I am going now but I know it's not really a
- 7:52spoiler. It's kind of, it's par for the
- 7:55course of Zelda. Really.
- 7:56So you you head into higher or Castle to face Ganon and it's
- 8:01just this epic sort of sweeping moments.
- 8:06Yeah, so I really loved breath of the world when it came out
- 8:09and for me at the time it was it was kind of a battle between
- 8:15this and Majora's Mask as to which was my favorite game that
- 8:19I've ever played. I think they both have very
- 8:23different strengths actually, which I'm sure we'll get to in
- 8:26the episode. So you played this on a switch,
- 8:31didn't you? Yeah.
- 8:32On the OLED most mostly paid it in docked mode.
- 8:36Is one of those games that I feel is a TV game, but I did.
- 8:41How did occasionally dip in and out of handheld?
- 8:43But not very often. So yeah, it was mostly on the
- 8:47TV. I don't have it, but if it was
- 8:50the same for you, I played that I've been playing a lot in hand
- 8:54held over the past couple of years.
- 8:58Really, it feels like, I don't know.
- 9:01It's just really switched my way of playing and I've been saying,
- 9:04which did you say? Yeah.
- 9:07And and I've been playing, I paid this in handheld.
- 9:11I've Hearted and here's of the kingdom, and at Champlain that
- 9:14all in handheld with headphones and on the OLED, that looks
- 9:19stunning and hold. So yeah, I'm a bit of a, I
- 9:23think, I'll tell you when, I think it, since I got the OLED,
- 9:26I really wanted to make use of that OLED screen, because it
- 9:29does look, yes. So, I think it, since I got the
- 9:34only that I started playing heavily in handheld.
- 9:37Yes, I play this in handheld. I did something different with
- 9:39this though because I really felt like once I finished breath
- 9:43of the wild, I was, I was quite happy to let it lie for some
- 9:47time and I'd wait until I organically went back to it to
- 9:52play it again because obviously, when you sunk that much time
- 9:55into a game, you gotta give yourself a bit of time to ask.
- 10:01Yeah, we set its. Why you and me, I haven't gone
- 10:03back to play the last of his part to yet.
- 10:06Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:06And maybe a couple of other games on the list as well.
- 10:09And so I did something different for this playthrough and I told
- 10:12you beforehand, what I was going to do, I bought the DLC for this
- 10:16game quite some time ago and my, my task that I set myself.
- 10:20Well, for this episode which was a probably, a less significant
- 10:23task than you had, was to complete the DLC for this game,
- 10:29ready for the episode, so that I could enjoy the gameplay once
- 10:32again, but also do something that I've never done before.
- 10:35And, yeah, I really quite enjoyed the DLC playing this
- 10:38game as well. Did you, did you manage to get
- 10:41Majora's Mask? I as part of the DLC or just
- 10:47generally as part of the DLC, I don't think it's in the, in the,
- 10:51in the main game. No, I think that there's two
- 10:54parts to the DLC and that may be part of part one.
- 10:56So I played heavily pots, who, which was the kind of story
- 10:59expansion. I got you.
- 11:01Yeah, so okay. Don't get hung up on the intro
- 11:07for too long. So let's move on to the
- 11:11storyline of this game. Do you want to give us a bit of
- 11:13a rundown shershow? I actually watched a video the
- 11:17other day about what people believe is, the current Canon of
- 11:21the Zelda series and the, the kind of the direction that they
- 11:25run. And it seems like it's still a
- 11:27completely huge mass that not even Nintendo properly knows,
- 11:32because I mean they bought out the book of it.
- 11:36Yeah. Like I'm like 2012 or something
- 11:37but since then there have been a couple of new games seems to
- 11:41have and even then I don't think it into I think there's there
- 11:45are contradictions in there. Yes there are.
- 11:47Yeah there are but this game takes place in Hyrule as do a
- 11:53majority of the other games and as always, you play as link who
- 11:58wakes up in the shrine or the Temple of resurrection, and he
- 12:04is kind of This game is very open.
- 12:08And your only task really is to defeat Ganon, but the story in
- 12:13the background is that 100 years ago, princess sailed along with
- 12:18four Champions, and her night, who the night was linked are
- 12:26given the task of defeating Ganon.
- 12:28However, upon the preparation for this, they each of the four
- 12:33Champions takes on something called a Divine Beast.
- 12:36Which is like this huge Shadow of the Colossus esque creation
- 12:41to help in the fight for Gannon, but when the battles finally
- 12:46begins, all of the Champions are killed.
- 12:50Link is defeated by these mechanical things called
- 12:55Guardians. And Zelda goes into Hyrule
- 12:58Castle on her own, to try and fight Ganon and hold him off.
- 13:04Link is taken to the the On a resurrection where he is
- 13:08basically put to sleep for 100 years and the game starts with
- 13:13with link waking up. He doesn't have any memory, he
- 13:15doesn't know anything really and the game is effectively,
- 13:21depending how you play it, but the linear story.
- 13:25I suppose is to find out what, what happened to Zelda to go
- 13:31back to Hyrule Castle to defeat Ganon because he has been
- 13:34trapped in that castle for 100 years and kind of lay Scourge to
- 13:38the land and find your memories and work out who you are and
- 13:43what happened and go and assist Zelda, because she's been in
- 13:47that castle for 100 years, holding off Gannon, and he's
- 13:50getting to a point now where he is about to overpower her, so
- 13:53link wakes up and that's, that's his task.
- 13:56And that's pretty much the story.
- 13:58I think, although I've probably missed a few bits and Bobs in
- 14:00there. No, I think that's it's there
- 14:04are some wrinkles to the usual sort of formula.
- 14:07Yeah, it's is still very much a Zelda game, it's not Majora's
- 14:10Mask, in terms of, no, it's not. This completely original thing.
- 14:16And I don't know if you've seen the trailer for breath of the
- 14:20wild, the very famous final trailer, but it's all about
- 14:24finding out what happened, 100 years ago.
- 14:27And as you say, you've referenced that in your In your
- 14:31description of the storyline. Okay?
- 14:33So this is a really big question for you.
- 14:35And this is not sarcasm, either watch changed and I'm not going
- 14:39to say what's changed between this and Skyward Sword.
- 14:42Because obviously we didn't play that as part of the I've played
- 14:45it separately but you've not played it.
- 14:47So let's watch change between this and Twilight Princess the
- 14:53scale of it. I suppose Twilight Princess is
- 14:57kind of marketed and discussed as The most linear of the Zelda
- 15:02games, and I don't know if that's the case for Skyward
- 15:05Sword, is even even more linear. There you go.
- 15:08So obviously Nintendo seemed like they were going in the
- 15:11direction of linearity with the Zelda franchise in the late
- 15:162000s and early 2010's. However, this game is different
- 15:22in the sense that it's completely open to you, it's
- 15:26completely free. So it's an open world and you
- 15:29can tackle it however, you want. There's no real way to do it.
- 15:34Everyone will find their own Journey with this game and
- 15:36everyone will find their own way of playing it.
- 15:39As soon as you've completed the tutorial area, which is named
- 15:43The Great Plateau. You're basically given the quest
- 15:47marker of defeat Ganon. So I'm pretty sure this is.
- 15:52The only Zelda game in the series where you can go and take
- 15:55on the final bout final boss, you know, minutes after
- 15:59completing the tutorial. And unless you really know what
- 16:01you're doing, you're going to get absolutely smashed to bits.
- 16:05I think, I don't know if it's, I don't know.
- 16:07If you can go straight to the final boss, but you can
- 16:09certainly approach, any dungeon in any order in Zelda. 1, going
- 16:15back to yes, yes. Yes, ye can.
- 16:17And I think we creation of breath of the world.
- 16:20That was something that they wanted to do, is they wanted to
- 16:22kind of kind of go back to the roots of Zelda, being with the
- 16:26first Legend, of Zelda game from the 80s that that Played you
- 16:31know, while ago, but another big change between this and Twilight
- 16:36Princess. And really, for the rest of the
- 16:38series is the dungeons. There aren't really traditional
- 16:44dungeons. I think you can probably argue
- 16:46that Hyrule Castle kind of classifies as one maybe.
- 16:51But the rest of the game is its kind of broken down into four
- 16:56Divine beasts, that you've got the option of going to Going to
- 17:01tackle the Divine Beast which kind of actors dungeon esque
- 17:04things giant puzzle boxes. Yeah that yeah.
- 17:07Puzzle boxes is a good term for them and then the other element
- 17:11to it that might be again. Slightly dungeon ask but they're
- 17:14just many puzzles to the most part is the 120 shrines around
- 17:20the map and the shrines are there to be completed.
- 17:25Some of them are puzzles, some of them are tests of strength
- 17:30and the end of Shrine you receive a spirit orb and you
- 17:33have to get for Spirit orbs to convert that into either a heart
- 17:37piece or not a heart piece of heart container or a addition to
- 17:42your stamina vessel. Because you've got the option in
- 17:45this game are either focusing on increasing your hearts or your
- 17:49stamina both of which probably equally important.
- 17:52I think this is the first game as well, really, where that's
- 17:56been an element to it and you know, that there's pros and cons
- 18:00And of doing both. Like, if you want to, if you
- 18:03want to get the master sword, then you need to put effort into
- 18:06up in your hearts, over your stamina, but it depends how many
- 18:10shrines are going to do, but you can just go to fight Ganon three
- 18:15hearts. You can go and fight again and
- 18:17then people have done it. Yeah I've watched quite a few
- 18:20speed runs of this game in the past kind of three weeks since I
- 18:23started playing it and like the stuff that people can do in this
- 18:25game is crazy. It's unbelievable.
- 18:28Yeah. And I suppose The biggest change
- 18:33of those, but another big change in this game is the combat
- 18:37system. And in particular the weapon
- 18:40degradation, which maybe you've got noted down to touch on
- 18:43later. I'm not sure.
- 18:44Yeah, good because I've got things to say about that.
- 18:48But yeah, this is a very, very different game to the other
- 18:53Zelda games and I think for, for me, because obviously you've
- 18:59kind of set your stall out quite Early on there.
- 19:01Like you said that? It's either this or Majora's
- 19:03Mask. They're potentially your
- 19:04favorite game of all time. Where as I said, I said at the
- 19:08time so there is six years of suppose deliberation there.
- 19:13Yeah, as well. So yeah, I'm still, I'm
- 19:19especially starting tears of the Kingdom.
- 19:23It's made me just think about the games.
- 19:26That's all I'll say, that's fair enough for me.
- 19:31Because, like, I mentioned at the start of the episode, I'm
- 19:34not really as Elder person. There are some games, some Zelda
- 19:37games on this list I've enjoyed I thought Link to the Past was
- 19:41all right, I played Ocarina of Time a couple of times in the
- 19:46past but the first time I completed it and it was okay.
- 19:50Majora's Mask, I really enjoyed Wind Waker.
- 19:53If you listen to our latter 50 ranking list, I'd mention it
- 19:58again that I wanted it to be better than I thought.
- 20:00Thought that it was and Twilight Princess.
- 20:04Yeah. And Twilight.
- 20:05Princess is probably being my least favorite out of them.
- 20:08And then you've got Zelda 1, Zelda 2, which kind of a thing
- 20:11on their own, but whether it's worth noting, you've still got
- 20:14to finish Twilight. Princess, obviously, I've still
- 20:16got to finish it, but breath of the wild feels like a completely
- 20:22different thing. And it is the most non Zelda
- 20:24feeling, Zelda game that I've played, and I mean, to be up
- 20:29front. I really, I'm still At the
- 20:31moment, obviously dance given me the challenge to complete all
- 20:34the Zelda games, which is why I need to go back and complete
- 20:36Twilight, Princess and I haven't completed breath of the world
- 20:39yet just because it's so massive.
- 20:43You know, I've think I've got 25 hours played around about that
- 20:46and I've done to Divine beasts. I don't quite a few shrines and
- 20:50I'm just kind of enjoying seeing where things take me and, as
- 20:56well as that, this is the first Zelda game where I haven't
- 21:00really Used a guide. Like I've looked up a few bits
- 21:03and Bobs here and there how to do specific things.
- 21:06But this is the first Zelda game where tips for?
- 21:09Yeah. Yeah, tips and stuff.
- 21:11However, this is the first Zelda game that we've played on the
- 21:14list. I think we're, I haven't seeked
- 21:17out specific guidance for certain bits.
- 21:20I've been happy to just go with it and, you know, see where it
- 21:23takes. Because the thing with this game
- 21:25is that if you're given a problem, that seems like it's
- 21:29only got maybe three ways of dealing.
- 21:30With it. If you step back and look at it,
- 21:32then there's probably actually about seven or eight ways that
- 21:35you can tackle the issue that there's you said to me probably
- 21:41a couple of years ago. But also just before we started
- 21:43this, the best way to play this game is to just see where it
- 21:46takes you. And that's kind of what I've
- 21:50done here. And like I said it feels like
- 21:53the, the least zelda-esque game of the Zelda games that we've
- 21:57played, which I think is why I've enjoyed it so much.
- 21:59And I think the biggest first element of that is the dungeons,
- 22:02which I know for a lot of Zelda fans, they hate the fact that
- 22:05there aren't dungeons in this game whereas I really, really
- 22:09enjoy that fact. So enough.
- 22:13Yeah, okay, so onto our ever-present feature, gameplay
- 22:18is King, is breath of the wild fun to play.
- 22:22Yes, it's unlimited options as to what you can do.
- 22:27The gameplay isn't Flawless and this certainly isn't a perfect
- 22:31game and ivory with that. Yeah, I've watched a lot of
- 22:36footage, particularly from 2017 and you're seeing again, right
- 22:41now, with Tears of the Kingdom reviews that are coming out and
- 22:44people like Jim Sterling saying things.
- 22:50Like you know, this game is 70 and he's I think he said I think
- 22:54sorry I think they said the same about getting them both at 7:00.
- 23:00I think batik with tears of the kingdom was that it's more of
- 23:04the same. Yeah.
- 23:07Not even that it's it by the stuff that builds on breath of
- 23:10the wind is great but it's Still uses a lot of stuff from breath
- 23:15of the wild. So if you don't like that stuff,
- 23:17that stuff still there. Yes.
- 23:19And there was a lot of pushback at the time against reviewers,
- 23:24that didn't, but Mark this game down, as a 10 out of 10 or a
- 23:28perfect and same to the kingdom. I mean, to be fair.
- 23:32Same for just sell the games in general.
- 23:34But just just a lot of rice. Particularly, I find exclusive
- 23:38games. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you will get
- 23:42those. That subsection of people that I
- 23:46was thinking. I was thinking about this
- 23:47recently, what people like, and I heard someone else.
- 23:51Describe maybe it was with, maybe it was.
- 23:54Jim Stephanie Sterling, who said this people just like to have an
- 23:59echo chamber. Yeah.
- 24:00What they like and they like this Echo chamber of thoughts
- 24:04saying oh yeah it's a to validate.
- 24:06This was perfect. Yeah yeah and I think we all
- 24:10seek that's a bit and I think We need to be aware of that,
- 24:14because our opinion is subjective, and it's not right?
- 24:21Yeah. So, these Echo Chambers are a
- 24:23bit unhealthy, in a way, aren't they?
- 24:24Yeah, they this game is very, very, very good and arguably one
- 24:31of the most fun, one of the most fun times I've had playing games
- 24:35on this list, but it isn't perfect.
- 24:38And we haven't played a perfect game on this list.
- 24:41We've played games. That you and me think probably
- 24:44quite close to being perfect, but I thought you say it's
- 24:48subjective, he's and Perfection. I don't believe any game is
- 24:52perfection. I mean, I know.
- 24:54There's that thing of saying Tetris is perfect but mmm,
- 24:57Tetris is also repetitive in its own way.
- 25:01Tetris is imperfect? Because Tetris pisses me off.
- 25:04Yeah, exactly. So that to me there is no such
- 25:08thing as Perfection but you can still have games that are a
- 25:11masterpiece. Oh, yes, absolutely.
- 25:15So, yeah, in a roundabout way of answering your question.
- 25:19That yes, this game is very fun and I imagine you would probably
- 25:22say the same. Yes.
- 25:24So, to me, in terms of the gameplay, this is Far and Away
- 25:29the best playing Zelda. I have no qualms in saying that
- 25:33it feels good to play. Everything feels Snappy and
- 25:38Punchy and jumping and climbing and all the physics stuff.
- 25:42In there it just feels good to play and jumping back into it.
- 25:48I was reminded of that it just feels good to play and it feels
- 25:51good to solve. Puzzles organically by
- 25:56experimenting. Yeah, this is a game about
- 25:58experimentation and experimenting here feels
- 26:02glorious. Yeah, I think it's really fun to
- 26:06play. I think that's probably the well
- 26:09one of two biggest selling points of this game is the
- 26:12gameplay. Okay, so what's your favorite
- 26:15move to do? Don't have to be a combat move
- 26:21to be, to be honest with you, I found it.
- 26:22I found the combat to be quite say me and I often found myself
- 26:27shying away from the combat because of the degradation
- 26:29system, not like entirely, but a lot of the time, I think that
- 26:36one of the best features in this game is the is the paraglider, I
- 26:40love it. Yeah, it makes traversal very
- 26:43good in particularly once you've done so, like we said, what you
- 26:47can do, Of the Divine beast, in any order that you want, the
- 26:52order that I've done them is, I did the the Zora one first, the
- 26:55big elephant, and then I did the Big Bird one afterwards in the
- 27:00sky. And after you complete that one,
- 27:02you get after each after each Divine, peace you and Locke a
- 27:07power from the original Champion, that piloted the
- 27:12Divine beast in the battle 100 years ago.
- 27:15And the one you get for doing the bird Divine Beast is Is
- 27:19what's it called like wings of rivoli's wind?
- 27:23Rivoli's wind that's it and basically you get a super high
- 27:27boost into the air that you can then paraglide off and it just
- 27:32makes traversal so fun. So I would say that the
- 27:35paraglider would be the highlight in terms of moves but
- 27:41again there are so many ways that you can play this game.
- 27:45Finding different ways to take on enemies and fighting Houses
- 27:48and stuff. Yeah, that's what I was going to
- 27:50say that. You know, think the with the
- 27:53combat there is, of course, there's the swordplay and
- 27:57there's quite a bit there, but, and there's a learning curve to
- 28:00it, as well, with the Dodgers and with the Perry's.
- 28:03Yeah, it's not easy. And then there's, then there's
- 28:07all the other bits that you can use all the other bits at your
- 28:09disposal to take on enemies, which I think you start to do as
- 28:15you start to experiment with the game, like I started using
- 28:17magnetism ISM to use. Yeah, metal objects to fight
- 28:21enemies or bombs or the ice, the freezing thing or stasis.
- 28:27The there's a lot to it and and the combat can change depending
- 28:33on conditions and things like that.
- 28:36So there are there are layers to the combat.
- 28:39But yeah, I get I get what you're saying especially if
- 28:44you're not a fan of the degradation.
- 28:47So, My favorite move. You've kind of stole my thunder.
- 28:50There is also the glider. Although I do have a backup, I'm
- 28:55as I say I'm playing two years of the Kingdom.
- 28:57I have not got the Glide runs. His of the Kingdom me I'm still
- 28:59quite early on in that game. I think I've just well I have
- 29:02just left the tutorial area and I don't have the glider yet yet
- 29:07at the same time in tears of the Kingdom, there's a lot of Sky
- 29:13Traverse or even very early on and I am missing the glider and
- 29:17I can't wait to get it. Because it becomes second
- 29:20nature. Yeah.
- 29:20To jump off a platform and just a tap, the, I think it's the x
- 29:25or the Y button, I was get confused because of the yeah.
- 29:28I think insects on the top. Yeah.
- 29:30And you tap that button and use your glider and it just feels so
- 29:36natural. It becomes like, it feels like
- 29:38I've lost a limb. Yeah.
- 29:39In tears of the Kingdom because I don't have it.
- 29:41That's how second nature. It becomes.
- 29:45So my secondary Favorite movies. I don't know if you've done this
- 29:49yet is The Shield surfing which is I vowed.
- 29:52I'd never worked hard to do that.
- 29:56So, it's I think it's using your shield with the left trigger and
- 30:02then it's jumping and then tapping the right trigger.
- 30:05I believe got you and and then you start Shield surfing and
- 30:09it's yeah especially if you do it in the snow, it's a lot of
- 30:12fun. Yeah, I've not far hasn't worked
- 30:14out so I'll give that a go when I next play it because I've seen
- 30:17videos of that and it was somehow.
- 30:19Yeah, runs trying. You can, you can Shield Surf and
- 30:24jump in the air and use your glider while.
- 30:25Your Shield surfing and carry on Shield.
- 30:27Surfing is again. There's a lot of layers to stuff
- 30:30that you wouldn't know. Yeah.
- 30:31So you just start digging with it and yeah, it's for that
- 30:35reason. Gameplay is King is as the name
- 30:40suggests, it's an important feature in our podcast.
- 30:44And I feel like this is one of the Stellar examples of
- 30:48gameplay. Yeah.
- 30:49In the list that we've done so far, there are a few others as
- 30:53well and this is one of them. So let's talk about the open
- 30:56world. I've called this section hostile
- 31:00Hyrule. Tell us a bit about Hyrule and
- 31:04what it feels like to. As you say, Have your path
- 31:08through it yet. Describe that for us with the,
- 31:12the game, the game scales in difficulty with you.
- 31:16So I think as you I don't know what the trigger is for it.
- 31:20Whether it's as you get more heart pieces or stamina parts,
- 31:23or as you complete more shrines or more Divine beasts, but the
- 31:27world scales with you and at the start of the game you are given
- 31:33this this like tablet thing which Each you need we you yeah,
- 31:40you get a Wii U which you effectively need to to update
- 31:44and fill in, by going to as in every open-world, a big tower,
- 31:49so that you can see what's, what's around you?
- 31:53What's going on? And I think there are about
- 31:56eight or nine of these big towers.
- 31:58Yeah. They're not too many.
- 31:59It's not like your Assassin's Creed or your father.
- 32:03No, yeah, it's every two minutes.
- 32:06Yes. But there are enough to
- 32:10challenge you and also the way to Traverse up.
- 32:14These towers can be different in different areas.
- 32:18Yeah. Like the old Assassin's Creed
- 32:19games used to have? Yeah yeah a little bit but The
- 32:26world around. You can go from being incredibly
- 32:29peaceful. One minute to just out, kill you
- 32:33a minute later. And one of the one of the issues
- 32:35that I was having, I was doing the tasks, for whatever that old
- 32:41woman's called the lives in kakariko, Village.
- 32:43I can't remember her name. Is it in park?
- 32:47Yeah, a, I was doing the task for her to find the 12 memories
- 32:54so that you Could kind of piece together what happened, a
- 32:57hundred years ago. And I knew that in doing that,
- 32:59I'd get the, the Champions tunic, the, the kind of the
- 33:03Classic Blue, yeah, outfit that you seal inquiring in there.
- 33:09So I know that you can get the, like, the green, the green tunic
- 33:13and stuff in the game. But you have to complete all the
- 33:15shrines to do that and there was no way that I was going to do
- 33:17that. So I thought I'd get the next
- 33:20best thing and there was one of the pieces that It was quite
- 33:26nearby Hyrule castle and it wasn't the one in Hyrule Castle.
- 33:31I did struggle with that a little bit, but not too bad and
- 33:34that was the only time that I've been in Tyrell Castle so far was
- 33:37to get that memory. So I've not gone in there to
- 33:39take on Ganondorf, get the shield but there's one run the
- 33:45front of Hyrule castle that you have to cross a big open pain of
- 33:49grass and as you get closer to the castle, there are these big
- 33:53Guardians. And like I mentioned earlier,
- 33:55The Guardians like these big machines that the way they fight
- 34:00you is that they'll lock onto you and they'll shoot this huge
- 34:03burst of light at you brutal. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:06Like, they're so frustrating. And for a while I was like, how
- 34:13am I going to get this memory? I had to sneak by and I got
- 34:15really far across and then one of them just swarming us off
- 34:18Christ's sake and because I'm not very good at the Perry
- 34:22system in this game with the shields, they just Sherry
- 34:25clattered me every time and sorry, how did you do it in the
- 34:31end? I can't even remember.
- 34:33I think I made my way to the central tower.
- 34:36Went up there and then just like flew down, which is an option in
- 34:40this game. Yeah.
- 34:41And a lot, a lot of the, a lot of the challenges in this game,
- 34:44I found, I found myself not going the way that they wanted
- 34:49you to go or any of the alternative routes they put
- 34:52aside to I just blocked right. I'm just going to climb So I
- 34:56avoided a lot of option though. Yeah, I avoided a lot of
- 35:00difficult areas just by climbing and like sometimes getting seen
- 35:05by an enemy is just like just absolutely.
- 35:08But as you remember, I went to Lionel.
- 35:12Yeah. Yeah, they're solid like they're
- 35:14really tough but I remember going up to the I say it's the
- 35:21fourth Shrine on the great Plateau, the one that's in the
- 35:23the cold area. Yeah, and if you look across
- 35:27over the great Plateau, it leads towards kind of like the rocky
- 35:30desert area. Yeah.
- 35:31And I was like, right, I'm going to fly over there.
- 35:33So I flew over and I was like, there is a tower around here.
- 35:37So I'm going to find it and I was climbing the mountain, you
- 35:38know, those. I can't know what they're
- 35:40called, but like, there's little ghosty things, they've got long
- 35:44robes on that kind of skip about Oh you mean yeah I know what you
- 35:49mean there. I know what they are.
- 35:52They're like the the sorcerer's are ya, Wizards and wizards I'd
- 35:57fought. I thought a couple of them and
- 35:59like that bit challenging but they weren't too bad and I found
- 36:02this one as I was climbing up the mountain to get to this
- 36:07Tower and it saw me I was like, okay this won't be too much of a
- 36:11problem but I realized robes. Yeah, with ropes, that's it.
- 36:16I realized all of my bows at broken so range was out and this
- 36:21one particular wizzrobe was absolutely solid and it just
- 36:24decided to start raining down Thunder and I started to run
- 36:28away and I was like, well I'll get out of its side and it will
- 36:30stop doing it but it chase me for a good like 45 seconds just
- 36:34like shooting this thunder from the sky and I was like what is
- 36:38going on and eventually I managed to get away but this
- 36:42game if you're not paying attention to the way that or
- 36:46going or if you're not paying attention to the alternative
- 36:48routes open to you it will absolutely smack you down.
- 36:51Yeah, this isn't as oh yeah, this isn't an easy game.
- 36:55And like each Divine Beast has its own boss at the end, and
- 37:00it's a version of Ganon that you have to fight.
- 37:02And I've done, like I said, the water one in the one in the air.
- 37:06And I've watched quite a lot of footage of the one that I'm
- 37:08about to do next. I'm in, I'm in the desert.
- 37:12I know you've seen that the one in the deserts, Divine Beast,
- 37:17gives people quite a lot of grief, just because of the speed
- 37:20of the thing and the thunder. So we'll see how I get on with
- 37:25that one and then I've got to go to Death Mountain to the last
- 37:29one. I've not really worked out how
- 37:31I'm going to do the whole thing in terms of not burning alive,
- 37:34when I get there because I want to try and find a shrine up
- 37:36their land on the floor and was dead within about 20 seconds
- 37:38because I just burnt burnt alive, it weighs.
- 37:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:42Again, quite a few waste to doll that kind of thing.
- 37:45Yeah, so yeah, this is a, this is a very hostile world if
- 37:50you're not paying attention and if you're not paying attention
- 37:54to your inventory and managing that effectively is how I would
- 37:59answer your question in a long-winded way. and, How do you
- 38:06think? So with so many games, you start
- 38:10the game and it's an open world but people had a certain way.
- 38:16How do you think this game? Gets away from that because I do
- 38:21believe it does. But what is it about this game
- 38:24that empowers people's go off in their own Direction?
- 38:29You know, I I've mentioned this before and I don't know because
- 38:33I know that you've watched a few videos on this game the past
- 38:36week or two, I've mentioned this video maybe a year or two ago
- 38:40and it's a video that I watched and it's a breath of the Wild
- 38:44video. I don't know if you've come
- 38:45across it yet of introducing A non-gamer to a video game.
- 38:51And it's don't remember it. So it's a guy that he's a gamer.
- 38:57He's been playing games all his life but his girlfriend isn't?
- 39:00She never really got game, so she doesn't really play them.
- 39:04And he basically says, okay, what I'm going to do is I'm
- 39:08going to give her a controller. I'm going to start on a new new
- 39:11game on breath of the wild and see how she gets on.
- 39:15And It seems from watching that video, that it took her a while.
- 39:20Particularly, like I've had girlfriends in the past where
- 39:24I've tried to get them into gaming and the thing that people
- 39:26struggle with the most is moving the camera, as well as moving
- 39:30the character, like free cameras really at the same time.
- 39:35Yeah, it really throws people that aren't used to it.
- 39:37Whereas for me it's imprinted into my head because I've been
- 39:41doing it since I was a kid. Butts with with the breath of
- 39:49the wild because you can just do whatever you want in.
- 39:53Whatever order even, you can't leave the great Plateau until
- 39:57you've done the for shrines and that's so that you don't kind of
- 39:59screw yourself over further on down the line, but even on the
- 40:03great Plateau, you tackle, it however you want.
- 40:05So, You know. I think it's either Matthew
- 40:11mitosis or King K on YouTube. Put it quite well, is that once
- 40:16you finish the great Plateau, you have got the the way point
- 40:21that the king there are actually two to go to kakariko Village or
- 40:25if you don't want a linear experience and you just want to
- 40:28kind of go and explore, you can do that as well.
- 40:30And that's the thing that this girl did when she was playing
- 40:33the game. She she only paid the great
- 40:35Plateau section but instead of when you come out of the shrine
- 40:38of Resurrection You do the iconic kind of intro to the game
- 40:42where you look over the great plateau and see the world, and
- 40:46the title comes up. And then if you're a gamer,
- 40:50you're going to follow the path. You're going to go right down
- 40:54towards the Temple of time, but she didn't and she just
- 40:59immediately went left fell off and died, but that taught her
- 41:04that okay. If there is a mountain there,
- 41:06you need to plan effectively for it.
- 41:07You need to think about it but there is Also away, if you go to
- 41:11the left where I think you can climb over the mountain without
- 41:13much difficulty, and she did that and because there's no,
- 41:18there's no invisible walls. There's nothing that's stopping
- 41:20you from doing it. You can just go and do that and
- 41:24I think personally that the exploration in this game is
- 41:29really where it excels because you can just come across stuff
- 41:34that I was going to say so I think yeah one is the gameplay
- 41:38itself. To is the world and just the way
- 41:42it's presented to you in the way that you can explore it.
- 41:46Yeah absolutely. And like I say some of the best
- 41:49moments in this game of the ones that you don't know are coming
- 41:52and I was playing it and I was I was going over some hills as I
- 41:56approached like hi Leah and as you get close to like higher if
- 42:02it's a specific time of day you see a dragon come out of the
- 42:06water. I can't remember the dragon's
- 42:08name. I did spend a bit of time On the
- 42:10dragon a few hours later because I needed to get part of his his
- 42:13horn to upgrade the tunic. But the first time kind of
- 42:17walking over the mountains and then just in the distant seeing
- 42:21a massive Dragon, like huge just kind of casually floating out of
- 42:28the lake and I'm flying around not all the cutscene no no no.
- 42:32It's all part of the game. He did you just kind of comes
- 42:34out and flies around then goes back into the lake and I I'd
- 42:39Seen footage of that before. But I'd forgotten, I'd forgotten
- 42:42about it, I think. And I was like, so I didn't
- 42:47really know anything about the dragons in this game because I
- 42:48think there are two or three I found two.
- 42:52But I looked at it and I was a bit like, oh Christ and I only
- 42:56had like quite basic weapon around me.
- 42:58Also, I'm like after the fight that thing which maybe not go,
- 43:02anywhere near that Lake because I absolutely no way that thing
- 43:06is going to absolutely like flame me.
- 43:09But you later find out if you do get a bit closer that they are
- 43:14they're peaceful there that they won't attack you and they're
- 43:17there to kind of get scales and parts of the horn from to
- 43:22upgrade your equipment but yeah. Like stumbling across the flight
- 43:26that in this game you can't really Put not put into words
- 43:31because it wasn't like a life-changing experience for me,
- 43:33but it was very like, quite special, you know, Wonder
- 43:35though, isn't it? Yeah, 100 percent.
- 43:38Because yeah, it's one of those games where you think.
- 43:40Okay, I've seen everything I'm on an open world, there's some
- 43:44really cool elements to it then all of a sudden boom Dragon.
- 43:46Oh, what is that going to eat me?
- 43:48Like, you know, it's it certainly is certainly a special
- 43:53game with very special elements in it.
- 43:56So I watched a video just before this, I hadn't watched it
- 44:00before. So it's a, there's a channel
- 44:03called game makers toolkit and it's about the design of video
- 44:07games. And basically, in 2017, Nintendo
- 44:11did a presentation in Japanese about how they design breath of
- 44:15the wild. But not a lot of information was
- 44:18released about that. A Nintendo didn't release it
- 44:22themselves. So this this YouTube is kind of
- 44:26broken down. On what was said in that
- 44:27presentation and they said that when they started designing this
- 44:32game, they had the towers as you say as the focal points and
- 44:38people would just follow certain path and they don't, they do end
- 44:40up at the towers and they'd all go the same way 80% of people
- 44:43would go the same way and 20% would go off in their own
- 44:46Direction, but Nintendo wanted everyone's got off in the right
- 44:49direction. So they said the way that they
- 44:51combat it, this was They created these other focal points around
- 44:56the map of varying scale and size.
- 44:58So you've got as you say, the shrines which have this
- 45:01distinctive orange color, that will pull you one way because
- 45:04you know, you can increase your hearts, increase your stamina.
- 45:07Yeah. You've got the, The Stables
- 45:09where you can do various things, pick up side quests, rest.
- 45:14And as you say it's quite a hostile World, you've got the
- 45:16town's, you've got the towers themselves and you've got all
- 45:21these things. Pulling you across the map and
- 45:26drawing You Away From The Towers.
- 45:29So apparently the way that they decide design the world was in
- 45:33Triangle, so that there are so many hills and mountains.
- 45:37So that at any one time, you can only see a certain number of
- 45:40things. To say, you've got four focal
- 45:43points but then you'll go to one focal point.
- 45:46Yeah, I've got another for focal points and they might be in a
- 45:49further Direction. So you head in that direction
- 45:51and then you see, four more And one of the things you said to me
- 45:54before we, before we decided to do the episode today, was you
- 45:58keep getting pulled off in there, not not in a bad way, but
- 46:02no pulled off into a direction away from the four key areas.
- 46:08And that's To me, that's where the game shines because I it's a
- 46:17bold statement to say but I don't think I've played another
- 46:20open world game. We played The Witcher 3
- 46:21recently, The Witcher 3 relies on waypoints and sat-nav, very
- 46:27heavy Journal telling you where to go.
- 46:30And yeah, it gets confusing at times in its linearity in terms
- 46:34of not linearity, but in its prescriptive way that it tells
- 46:39you to go to certain locations. Occasions.
- 46:41And what are the way point? Whereas, here, it basically just
- 46:47blows up that whole thing, that whole thing that video game is
- 46:51do and does something different. And I think games have done the
- 46:56same retention to do the same since then since breath of the
- 47:00wild came out, but it did feel very, very fresh.
- 47:05And I'd argue it still feels very fresh because so few games
- 47:08master that And I'm just looking at my when I when I put together
- 47:15the list for this episode, I'll I usually like to have quite a
- 47:20clear concise list but I've got notes all over the place here.
- 47:24So as you said, one of the great things about the game is that
- 47:28you can go anywhere. You can do the dungeons in any
- 47:31order. You can go straight to it again.
- 47:34And if you want to, yeah you feel you're ready to do that.
- 47:38The story's heading is another area where they Tried something
- 47:42different. And I don't think this is
- 47:44actually, as successful as the other things, because before I
- 47:47played this game, I read an interview with Aegean Numa who's
- 47:52the producer has older. Who's basically mr.
- 47:55Zadra Nintendo. Yeah.
- 47:56And he said, in terms of the stories heading, he said we've
- 48:00done something completely different and with this we we
- 48:07think is going to be really fresh for people.
- 48:11Oh, and it is different. This is not the way that people
- 48:14usually tell stories, but the problem I have with it is It
- 48:18wasn't this new way of telling a story, but what you're basically
- 48:21doing is going around the map unlocking memories.
- 48:24They're all in the past. Yes you're unlocking that what
- 48:26happened but Not all of them feel that important, it just
- 48:32didn't feel revolutionary the way that he was describing.
- 48:35I don't know if you, how you feel about the memories that you
- 48:38unlock because the game is so open.
- 48:43You don't, I mean you can follow the the photos that you're given
- 48:47to kind of doing a specific way, but you're more than likely
- 48:50going to just stumble across them.
- 48:51Maybe if you're lucky, I'll that was the only part of the game
- 48:54like that. I really needed to be a guidance
- 48:57on to find. Out the specific locations.
- 49:00So, If you just do it in any order, you're going to kind of
- 49:06see the story of, you know, how Zelda and Link Mets to how their
- 49:13relationship increased to the point where she finally kind of
- 49:17opens up to him and has faith of faith in him.
- 49:19But if you're watching them in, you know, random Order it can be
- 49:28quite jarring because you're not really following the structure
- 49:31of the story. Which, you know, it's probably
- 49:34the only part of this game story that this happens in because the
- 49:38rest of it is just like why you can do it in any point in any
- 49:41way that you need to until you get to this point and then
- 49:44you're at the castle. So the story is going to go in
- 49:45this way but I'm like because the the memories are completely
- 49:52optional you don't have to do you have to do anything in that
- 49:54game? No, no. but I'm glad that I did
- 49:56because it gave me more of a An idea on Zelda and links
- 50:03relationship. And I mean, this is the first
- 50:06time that characters have been voiced and a Zelda game.
- 50:10And I wasn't really sure how I felt about Zelda's character.
- 50:18Yeah, get that. She, I don't know.
- 50:21She she comes across has, I'm not sure, but there's just
- 50:26something about her where I feel.
- 50:27She's very entitled and she's very Upper own arse a little bit
- 50:33in the initial cutscenes and that that will probably change.
- 50:37When, you know, I get to the castle and defeat Ganon.
- 50:40So I know that obviously she's heavily linked with that section
- 50:43of the game and I know that she's linked with tears of the
- 50:45Kingdom as well. So I'm already more impressed
- 50:48with Elders characterizations. His of the Kingdom.
- 50:51Yeah. In in breadth of the world.
- 50:54She's just kind of shown to be a little bit helpless.
- 50:57She's kind of having an existential crisis throughout
- 50:59the 12, cutscenes of the memory. Is about the fact that she
- 51:03cannot fathom this power that she needs to defeat Ganon.
- 51:08And she's very much a reluctant hero that's yet to kind of show
- 51:15off any heroics and she's very aware of that and she's very in
- 51:19her own head about that. So she's very conflicted and
- 51:22very torn but because I haven't seen how the story ends.
- 51:25I know how the game ends in terms of fight Ganon and win,
- 51:29but I've never watched any of the cutscene scenes from the end
- 51:31game. So I don't know how the story
- 51:36concludes and breadth of the world, you know.
- 51:38So maybe my, my perception on that will change at some point
- 51:41soon. I don't know.
- 51:42But yeah, that I feel that those memories really are key.
- 51:47And if there was going to be any part of the game that should
- 51:50have been mandatory, it probably should have been those.
- 51:53Yeah, maybe. Yeah, one thing I want to talk
- 51:57about is and I want to use the word systemic here.
- 52:02The gameplay is systemic. There are so many systems at
- 52:06play. Yeah, and they are part of what
- 52:09make the game joyous for me? So, you go into a shrine, you've
- 52:14got a challenge. And I mean, the great one is,
- 52:17this is the one that people always use, but it's a great
- 52:19example. You've got one way, you've got a
- 52:22maze and you're trying to get the ball from one side to the
- 52:26other and you In your tilt controls that the switch has in
- 52:32order to manipulate this Maze and to get the ball to roll from
- 52:35one end to the other. Or you can flip the the maze
- 52:39over entirely using the Tilt controls.
- 52:41Use the flat surface of the underside and roll.
- 52:44It's your destination. Yeah it's stuff like that.
- 52:47You've got these shrines that you will see people on YouTube.
- 52:55Finding ways to do them, which it feels like with these
- 53:00shrines. They've presented these
- 53:01challenges. There are ways to do them that I
- 53:04suppose, you could call intentional, set ways to do
- 53:07them. But there are also countless
- 53:11other ways to do them. So there are ones where you
- 53:13manipulate lightning and in order to get lightning from one
- 53:18side to the other, you can use the set way that you suppose
- 53:22Nintendo. Intended for you to do, or you
- 53:25can use weapons, which conducts electricity and they can be your
- 53:30channel from one side to the other there at the systems that
- 53:35play. So you've got the rain, you've
- 53:37got the fact that if you use metallic weapons in the rain you
- 53:42will get struck by lightning. So you have to change that.
- 53:44While me up it as you know yeah you got the fact that you can't
- 53:49climb in the rain. So I'm also very frustrating.
- 53:53It just adds to this idea of a hostile world, doesn't it?
- 53:56And yeah I'm sure there are some players that may be weighted the
- 53:59rain out in a stable or something.
- 54:01And I think that's maybe part of what Nintendo intended you to
- 54:06do, but people like be carried on anyway.
- 54:08Thinking I'm going to I'm going to do my damnedest to get up
- 54:11this mountain and then arranged, a and fall and die.
- 54:15Yeah, or that. Yeah.
- 54:16So so so there's that and then there's Lincoln jump for the
- 54:22first time And yes, you've got these powers that I already
- 54:24mentioned. You've got the magnetism, you've
- 54:26got the stasis, and some of the stuff that people have done in
- 54:30this game. As I said before, is
- 54:33unbelievable, the way that they've used this, these
- 54:35physics. Have you seen the people doing
- 54:37the traversal with the bombs? I'll probably see it at some
- 54:41point. Basically, they get a bomb, they
- 54:44throw it, and then they jump in the air and get their bow out.
- 54:48So they're kind of going to like Matrix Slow Time shoot the shoe,
- 54:52the bomb, and they just go flying across the map.
- 54:55And that's how a lot of them do traversal for speedruns is
- 54:57crazy. I mean, it's at the at that, you
- 55:01know, the mercy of the fact that you lose a few Hearts, but it's
- 55:04crazy just like how we live life broken this game, this waste of
- 55:08quite literally fly that The found.
- 55:10Yeah. And I mean a simple example is
- 55:14this, but there are that there are so many systems at play.
- 55:17But a simpler example is this. You have a fire breaks out
- 55:23because you shoot an explosive Barrel.
- 55:25Yep. And all the surrounding grass,
- 55:29trees set on fire. That in turn generates hot wind
- 55:35that in turn. You can use your glider and you
- 55:37can glide above. Yeah.
- 55:38So if you're fighting One then you can attack from above using
- 55:41your bow and the whole game is like this.
- 55:45You have an axe, you can chop down trees using those trees.
- 55:48You can either gather the wood or you can build yourself a
- 55:51bridge to cross the river, which is, I think one of the ones
- 55:54that's presented in the, in the plateau.
- 55:58Yeah, there's like the options presented to you.
- 56:00This just so many logical things in there where you might think.
- 56:06Can I do this? And Invariably most of the time
- 56:10you can do that and that's really satisfying that to me,
- 56:16adds to the gameplay and the exploration to create this, what
- 56:21feels like a living world. So though, yes, the rain is
- 56:27hazardous and Annoying. It's also consistent makes sense
- 56:33within that world and people will deal with it in different
- 56:36ways. Yeah.
- 56:40Let's talk about. The weapons, which is a very
- 56:44contentious point in a very divisive point.
- 56:47So let's talk about those. What do you think about them?
- 56:50I hate it. It is my biggest gripe with this
- 56:53game to anyone that hasn't played it.
- 56:56The game has a weapon degradation system where
- 57:00basically, you don't have assets inventory of weapons in this
- 57:05game like previous where you'd get like the Kokiri sword.
- 57:07And then the master sword or whatever it is very much, the
- 57:10start of the game, you pick up like twigs, And sticks and you
- 57:13fight with those until you can pick up swords and loads of the
- 57:16game scales with you. But each weapon each shield and
- 57:20each bow only has a specific number of uses before it breaks.
- 57:26And this game you can't fix stuff.
- 57:30If it starts to become damaged, so it kind of puts you off from
- 57:34using the good equipment on things that you feel like maybe
- 57:39you don't need it and you can get the master sword in this
- 57:43game. I got it.
- 57:44It's at the expense that you have to do quite a few shrines
- 57:47beforehand, because you need 13 Hearts to be able to pull it out
- 57:50of the stone. But even then, the master sword,
- 57:54like you mentioned to me, it isn't the best weapon in the
- 57:57game, and as well. That although it never breaks,
- 58:03it will overcharge. And then once you've done the
- 58:05same amount of damage as your do with any other weapon in the
- 58:08game, it needs to charge back up for 10 in game minutes.
- 58:11So I found the degradation system to be very frustrating
- 58:17and part of me understands why they did it because they want
- 58:20you to kind of keep play necessary.
- 58:23You think it was necessary. Yeah, I think it was I don't
- 58:27think Nintendo set out to make a game with weapon degradation.
- 58:31No, I think they did it to make you play in different ways and
- 58:35experience different things. So, you just wouldn't get stuck
- 58:38playing in one way. With this hazardous world that
- 58:41they've got where everything is a threat, where it does have a
- 58:44steep difficulty curve to begin with.
- 58:46I think having Asset sword. Although it would have made it a
- 58:53more straightforward, kind of less frustrating experience for
- 58:57some. Hmm, I think it would also taken
- 58:59away from that element. I think you can't have one
- 59:02without the other, so I understand.
- 59:05Well, I feel like I understand why they did it and I don't mind
- 59:08it. I also feel like when you
- 59:11learned, Embrace the degradation system, what?
- 59:16I mean by that is you start to get into a habit of just picking
- 59:21things up and thinking, you don't.
- 59:25I mean, I've recently paid Resident Evil 4 where your
- 59:27weapons, you're upgrading them and you have certain stalwarts
- 59:32that you always go for, I love the Magnum in Resident Evil 4,
- 59:35you do the opposite ends older, you think?
- 59:37Well, I'm not gonna get attached to this because it's going to
- 59:39break and weapons are plenty. 24 and the out of the I suppose.
- 59:45The only problem with the degrading weapons is the fact
- 59:47that you always have to go into the system to use them, there
- 59:52might be another way, but I might have forgotten it.
- 59:55But yeah, so I feel like it was necessary and I feel like if
- 1:00:00you'd have had that system that the old Zelda U the old Zelda's
- 1:00:03used it would have taken away something else that I feel like
- 1:00:08the game couldn't survive losing and for the game to be as it is,
- 1:00:19I feel like those are, those are for that worlds of here, as
- 1:00:22hostile as it does, it's really important to have them.
- 1:00:27I don't, I don't really know another solution to that
- 1:00:30conundrum, and I suppose that's why I think Nintendo went that
- 1:00:32way. Hmm, I agree with you.
- 1:00:36It probably is the case, but I still reserve the right to be
- 1:00:39annoyed about it because it's my, my least favorite element of
- 1:00:43the game by by far. But I get the feeling I
- 1:00:50understand as to why it's there but yeah just wasn't wasn't for
- 1:00:53me, you know. Yeah.
- 1:00:55And that's what that's what I've used the word necessary, I think
- 1:00:58it was necessary even if it's always going to be divisive and
- 1:01:02there are always going to be Zelda.
- 1:01:04Fans clamoring for Nintendo to return to non degradable weapons
- 1:01:09bar. In this game.
- 1:01:11I feel like it was the right call.
- 1:01:14Even if it doesn't bother to be honest, it doesn't bother me as
- 1:01:18much as it did not begin with it.
- 1:01:19Did bother me a lot to begin with.
- 1:01:20It was you have to get used to it?
- 1:01:22Yeah. And just when you get yourself,
- 1:01:24a good sword, you think I was Bloody broken.
- 1:01:27I feel like you do start to unlock this sort of Hermits
- 1:01:33mentality where you just start to Interchange things and I've
- 1:01:38kind of gone into tears of the Kingdom with that same
- 1:01:40mentality. And it does things a little bit
- 1:01:42differently into the kingdom. But yeah, it's strange.
- 1:01:45How you can shift that side of yourself because I am a huge II.
- 1:01:50Can't stand degradable weapons in other games, but there's
- 1:01:55something here. Don't mind do you?
- 1:01:58Yeah, it's yeah, I don't mind it and I understand it.
- 1:02:00And because of that, I find it acceptable, but I owe was that I
- 1:02:06understand that people's mileage very on this.
- 1:02:08And I think this was one of the things that really put off.
- 1:02:12Jim Stephanie Sterling, which is fair enough?
- 1:02:14Yeah. So the final design aspect I
- 1:02:19want to talk about and this is going to be a slightly longer
- 1:02:22episode, but I think that was to be expected is the climbing and
- 1:02:27traversal. So games have tried it before
- 1:02:33and you hear that old thing of, oh, you can go anywhere.
- 1:02:37You see that? He'll that mountain in the
- 1:02:38distance you can go there. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:41That that I mean game is as far back as Oblivion and probably
- 1:02:44Morrowind was saying things like that.
- 1:02:46And one thing that I've noticed a lot of games since breath of
- 1:02:51the world have copied is a climbing system.
- 1:02:54Yeah, you can climb anything and It's something that's not the
- 1:02:59most fun to do in the game, but it really adds a lot to that
- 1:03:03freedom. So I just wanted to touch upon
- 1:03:05it. Have you got any thoughts about
- 1:03:07the climbing? I love the climbing in this game
- 1:03:09and you know, when you think of other games have got somewhat
- 1:03:13similar environments or Maps like Skyrim and to climb a
- 1:03:18mountain, you're a mountain. You effectively have to break
- 1:03:20the game so that you're walking vertically.
- 1:03:24Whereas the implementation here is really good and like I said,
- 1:03:27earlier, I used Climbing a lot to kind of get around difficult
- 1:03:32parts or to get around enemies and you can use it for stealth.
- 1:03:36You can use it for lots of different, you know, different
- 1:03:40tasks and as soon as I got the 13 Hearts to get the master
- 1:03:43sword, I then just started putting all of my Shrine orbs
- 1:03:48into stamina because I found stamina to be the most useful.
- 1:03:53Yeah. And to be honest with you, if
- 1:03:54you didn't need the 13 Hearts to extract, the master sword from
- 1:03:57the And I probably would have done it earlier.
- 1:04:01Yeah I probably you know would have been happy if I had like
- 1:04:06six or seven Hearts through the game and just put all of my
- 1:04:10stuff into stamina because I think it's so useful with things
- 1:04:12like climbing with sprinting. With the amount of time you can
- 1:04:15hold onto your paraglider. It's just that the way to go and
- 1:04:19I really like the climbing in this game climbing in.
- 1:04:23The rain is very frustrating. Yeah.
- 1:04:25Because yeah, like you said earlier it can kind of live At
- 1:04:28what you can do. And, you know, in the rain you
- 1:04:30are very limited as to how chivalrous halfway climbing up
- 1:04:34something, and then it starts raining, which happens.
- 1:04:37Yeah, frustrating. But no, I really like the
- 1:04:40climbing element of this game and all of the stamina based.
- 1:04:43If I do enjoy, I think it's one of the best elements of the
- 1:04:46game, except the swimming don't like the swimming.
- 1:04:50You don't like this to me. No, I think that's another
- 1:04:53thing. I think there's another design
- 1:04:56choice that they made. Because there are parts of the
- 1:05:00map. There are certain areas that in
- 1:05:05a way can't be crossed because you won't be able to swim across
- 1:05:09them because of the stamina and it was it was a way to not
- 1:05:15necessarily limit the plagues. I don't believe that was the
- 1:05:17reason Bay as a way to rein in what you could do with that
- 1:05:22starting amount of things yet. I think it was the they don't
- 1:05:28put control on you a lot here, but it's a way to steer you.
- 1:05:32I think that's probably a good word for it to stay.
- 1:05:33Yeah, it's steer you in different directions.
- 1:05:36Yeah, I agree. We're not really touched on this
- 1:05:39and looking forward to talking about it.
- 1:05:42Let's talk about the audio of this game.
- 1:05:43I've got three aspects to talk about, so let's talk about the
- 1:05:46voiceover. The, you you mentioned before.
- 1:05:48How do you feel about it? It's alright.
- 1:05:51It's, I don't think it's intrusive.
- 1:05:55It's The first Zelda game where they have used voice acting and
- 1:05:59only for a select number of characters, not everyone has it
- 1:06:03for a lot of the NPC's. It's still very much the same as
- 1:06:06I'll do whether it's like who are that kind of thing which I'm
- 1:06:11okay with, to be honest, yeah, I'm fine with it.
- 1:06:13I think could have gone too far with it.
- 1:06:15Yeah, I don't think everyone needs a voice and I think the
- 1:06:17decision to not Voice Link as well.
- 1:06:19Was the correct one. Yeah, I think to be fair I even
- 1:06:22think voicing Zelda was risky because my God.
- 1:06:26I found it to be a bit irritating, but I think the
- 1:06:29voice acting is fine. It's not going to win any awards
- 1:06:32for how good it is, but I think it does the job in The Limited
- 1:06:37inclusion. As to what it is in this game.
- 1:06:40Are you you similar? Yeah, I think, for a long, long
- 1:06:47time there was a conversation about.
- 1:06:49Should Zelda put voice working? Should they not?
- 1:06:52And I was, I always erred on the side of not because there's,
- 1:06:59there's the cartoon, The Unofficial cartoon that they
- 1:07:01made. When they voiced The Sword of
- 1:07:04gamilon or whatever it was called.
- 1:07:05Drink. Do you must do the CDI games?
- 1:07:08Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:07:09With the legs. Excuse me.
- 1:07:12Me, Princess, an octorok? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:18And if handled the wrong way, it could have been.
- 1:07:25It could have turned it into a cartoon and just spoil the game.
- 1:07:29Yeah, I think what you said, you used a phrase and I would Echo
- 1:07:33this phrase is you described it as non intrusive?
- 1:07:36And that's why I think as well. I know Zelda's performance.
- 1:07:42We're a bit divided on it. What I don't like is I generally
- 1:07:46don't like this in general in general with voice acting is
- 1:07:49they've got an American actress to do a British accent and you
- 1:07:53can hear American rhythms in there.
- 1:07:56Yeah. Which bothers me, it has
- 1:07:58improved by Tears of Tears with the kingdom and I'm glad that
- 1:08:02they've not done what lots of people say, which is I'll get
- 1:08:05rid of the voice actress because that's a slippery slope as well.
- 1:08:11And And so I saw it. See, I think they'll just
- 1:08:15tolerable. I think she's improved by Tears
- 1:08:18of the kingdom, and the accents improved as well, so yeah, it's
- 1:08:24there. And it's not intrusive.
- 1:08:26So that's how I feel about The Voice work, soundtrack.
- 1:08:30What do you think? Yeah, the music's great.
- 1:08:32It's, I've mentioned a few times that games often need quiet
- 1:08:39time. And because a lot of this game
- 1:08:41wrecked, Is you on your own traveling?
- 1:08:45Going cross-country climbing mountains.
- 1:08:48It will occasionally bring in like a very low backing track.
- 1:08:53Usually yeah, no piano. Yeah, I love it.
- 1:08:57Yes, it's very relaxing and it's the kind of thing that you could
- 1:09:00listen to to unwind and relax which I think you did.
- 1:09:02You do don't you with with this the soundtrack.
- 1:09:06I've not really not a lot because Son, some games, some
- 1:09:10games are do. Let's go and listen to some
- 1:09:12games. I like to keep in the game
- 1:09:15because it makes you appreciate it more when you're actually
- 1:09:17playing it and this is one of those.
- 1:09:20Yeah, yeah, that that that's that's fair enough.
- 1:09:24And, you know, this, the Zelda series has some very, very
- 1:09:29famous music in it. You know, you think to Ocarina
- 1:09:34of Time with all of the Ocarina Tunes, so many people know those
- 1:09:39those, when I think of some of the best music in the Zelda
- 1:09:42series, I think of the Clock Town Theme from Majora's Mask,
- 1:09:47especially on increments of the day's passing particular on the
- 1:09:50third day, when it's all Manic and crazy and then the final 24
- 1:09:54hours, it just suits and breadth of the wild doesn't really have
- 1:10:01anything like that in the game, but all of the music that it
- 1:10:04does have within the game and within the cutscenes, within the
- 1:10:07exploration and the background Sit perfectly and it fits it
- 1:10:10perfectly. It doesn't need memorable.
- 1:10:15You know, tunes that are going to work to have the same midi.
- 1:10:20No, I mean, it's not a career at a time but it wouldn't work to
- 1:10:22have the same midi track playing on.
- 1:10:24Repeat no. The 155 hours that you're
- 1:10:27playing you but be driven. There are definitely parts of
- 1:10:32this game. That have little nods to the
- 1:10:34older games. Like when you go up to the top
- 1:10:36of the tower and you're extracting, the data for The
- 1:10:39region. The music that plays is
- 1:10:42doo-doo-doo-doo doo-doo-doo-doo did, which is the sound of when
- 1:10:48you're opening a chest in Ocarina of Time there are, there
- 1:10:52are nods to older games in the series that aren't intrusive
- 1:10:56again. And it does it well, and I think
- 1:10:59that's exactly what this kind of game needs.
- 1:11:00Because, like, I say, it is, it is a Zelda game, but it feels
- 1:11:04like it's it's own thing and I've not played tears of the
- 1:11:07kingdom and I've not really Much footage on it, I had funnily
- 1:11:11enough, I went into that very cold, deliberately in a way
- 1:11:15because, yeah, I felt like I knew what I hoped it would be
- 1:11:20and I didn't need anything to kind of paint my view of it.
- 1:11:22So I just wanted to go in cold and experience it for.
- 1:11:25What is the feeling that I get with, with breadth of the world
- 1:11:28and with maybe route ears of the Kingdom?
- 1:11:30I don't know, is that Nintendo are taking Zelda and a new
- 1:11:35Direction, and it's got its nods to The past and its history, but
- 1:11:42soda is becoming a different thing now.
- 1:11:45And I think that that gets shown in the music and to be fair,
- 1:11:51it's something I'm fine with from what I understand is that
- 1:11:53the kingdom does bring things like Dungeons back, I think.
- 1:11:56But, and that's something I'm not, you know, excited to
- 1:12:00experience. Because my great with these
- 1:12:02early games is the dungeons. I'd never really enjoyed them
- 1:12:05buttons, are they do the spin of it, because I know that they do.
- 1:12:09I've heard that too, but I've not experienced it yet.
- 1:12:13So it could be what I love about the possibilities of Tears.
- 1:12:18Of the kingdom are number one, refining, breath of the wild
- 1:12:21refining that core game and there are refinements to be
- 1:12:24made, but also experimental Nintendo is one of the most
- 1:12:30exciting things and I want to see what those dungeons look
- 1:12:34like. And if they do, look the same,
- 1:12:35or if they are something quite different.
- 1:12:38Yeah. That's exciting to me.
- 1:12:40You said the same about Sony as well.
- 1:12:43You like it when Sony's being experimental I love it.
- 1:12:46Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:12:47PS3 Sony yes. Exactly.
- 1:12:50Sony that hasn't been around for a long time.
- 1:12:53Yeah, I hope to see you again. Do you have a favorite piece of
- 1:12:59music? I don't know what it's called
- 1:13:05but it's it's a piece of piano music and it's kind of very slow
- 1:13:11and it goes Durden do now and then there's a very high kind of
- 1:13:17octave did it. It's just it's background
- 1:13:20iconic. I can't explain it, I can't do
- 1:13:22it. I'll send it to you after.
- 1:13:25Yeah. But yeah that that stands out
- 1:13:29for me. What about you I love you have
- 1:13:34heard it once when you entire all cars, then Hyrule Castle to
- 1:13:37pick up the yeah the memory. I love the Hyrule castle theme
- 1:13:44when you're about to do Ganon and you're working your way
- 1:13:48through Hyrule Castle, which is quite a long section.
- 1:13:50Yeah, it's epic. It especially, especially for me
- 1:13:56who had been playing for ya, so long, she hundreds of hours and
- 1:14:01I got to this point and I was finally there and is such a
- 1:14:06great piece and there are queues from Link's Awakening.
- 1:14:10The Ballad of the wind fish in there.
- 1:14:13Yeah and I think there are queues from Link to the Past as
- 1:14:15well in there and it's just such a good piece of music and there
- 1:14:21are some other really great pieces here.
- 1:14:22There's the there's the return of dragon Roost island in the
- 1:14:29wind section with the birds the bird people router.
- 1:14:32I think they call. Yeah, I like them.
- 1:14:33That's my Race of characters in the Zelda series, I don't want
- 1:14:39the gorons and there's Aura but I really like the Ruto. yeah, so
- 1:14:46I really love that piece and you've already touched on the
- 1:14:50other point that I had, which was the silence and I think,
- 1:14:54This, this score, the score to this game again, really feeds
- 1:15:01into that sense of adventure. Yeah, that sense of exploration.
- 1:15:05Whoever composed, this music must have played the game and
- 1:15:10just felt I don't know. I just felt that this music fit
- 1:15:14and it really does. Okay, onto another very strong
- 1:15:20point the visuals. Let's talk about those It's kind
- 1:15:25of similar to Wind Waker, isn't it?
- 1:15:27It's got like a kind of cel-shaded effect to it, which I
- 1:15:31think works in its favor because same is Windwaker.
- 1:15:34It doesn't really aged no. And you know, the problem that
- 1:15:37you've got with Ocarina of Time with Twilight Princess in
- 1:15:41particular, actually, as I think they look very much defined by
- 1:15:44the generation that they came out in.
- 1:15:47Yeah. And breath the wild doesn't and
- 1:15:49it's the same four tiers of the Kingdom.
- 1:15:50I think, because it's the same artstyle, the It really suits
- 1:15:56the environment and the kind of game that it is.
- 1:15:59But yeah the the visuals on this game are a superb and it's got
- 1:16:05you know very what's what are used in sweat it's very pastels
- 1:16:10watercolor pastels that you know like pastel paintings.
- 1:16:15It reminds me of that but what color as well definitely.
- 1:16:18That's yeah those sort of I don't know how you describe it.
- 1:16:23Those painterly vibes and they're not, they're not bright
- 1:16:27colors, but they're, but they're pretty.
- 1:16:30And it's just very pretty, isn't it?
- 1:16:32Yeah, it is. It's a very good looking game.
- 1:16:36There are issues in terms of the framerate occasionally.
- 1:16:39Yeah, only one how much is going on on-screen particularly, when
- 1:16:42you go into the Kokiri Forest frame rate tax and I've heard
- 1:16:48that on the Wii U, the framerate is particularly bad.
- 1:16:52So it might be a bit of a victim of its own art style, but it
- 1:16:56does look incredibly appealing. This is, I know, it's not
- 1:17:02realistic grass, but I think it's probably my favorite
- 1:17:04looking grass in gaming. Yeah, just looks like I want to
- 1:17:09run around in it and I think that again adds to that sense of
- 1:17:12play as that sense of adventure and I've heard that this is what
- 1:17:19Miyamoto wanted for this Zelda game.
- 1:17:22That sense of play. And I feel like they've achieved
- 1:17:25that with that with so many aspects of it, the word I'd use
- 1:17:29for it is light. Yeah.
- 1:17:31Not not just lighters in like light and darkness but it just
- 1:17:36feels very light and weightless maybe left.
- 1:17:41Mmm. Yeah, okay.
- 1:17:46On to our question of the week. I don't know if you saw the
- 1:17:50trailer to the, like I've mentioned the trailer before the
- 1:17:52final trailer snow game. But what I want to ask is a
- 1:17:56fantastic Trader in it and it is so I would recommend watching it
- 1:18:00because it's so well, put together, the music is
- 1:18:03outstanding and the way it drops, and it makes you want to
- 1:18:08jump into this game. I really would recommend it.
- 1:18:12So what makes a good trailer for a game for you?
- 1:18:20yeah, I'm not sure about the one fish looks like I said, I've not
- 1:18:23seen it but when I think of good trailers I immediately think of
- 1:18:28the trailer for GTA V. I remember when that trailer
- 1:18:33dropped and it was so good and it was the the intro intro to
- 1:18:40the trailer where Michael, I think Mike was, is something
- 1:18:43like what made me move here? I think it was the weather, and
- 1:18:48it just gives you an overview of Los Santos and shows you all the
- 1:18:52things that you're going to be able to do.
- 1:18:53And I think a good game trailer. Same as a good movie trailer, is
- 1:18:59it will reel you in and give you.
- 1:19:01You a tease of what you can expect to happen but it doesn't
- 1:19:05give away too much. Yeah.
- 1:19:06And there are a lot of films that have trailers where you
- 1:19:10could just say. Well, I've pretty much seen the
- 1:19:12film. Now, after you've watched the
- 1:19:13trailer, so many Traders do that.
- 1:19:15Now, it's only and I always think the trailer that maybe
- 1:19:20less is more. Yeah.
- 1:19:22Don't give away your best moments in the trailer.
- 1:19:24Yeah, and I also think of the introduction to the trailer to
- 1:19:31the force awakens and obviously that was very highly anticipated
- 1:19:36because it was the first Star Wars film in 10 years but It was
- 1:19:42just very simple, the first half.
- 1:19:45Anyway, it was very simple and very reeled in and kind of
- 1:19:50restrained and it worked perfectly and I think that's
- 1:19:54what I like to see from a trailer but the same time.
- 1:19:58You know, they've just really revealed that there's going to
- 1:20:01be a remake of mgs3 and or remaster, I don't know what
- 1:20:05they're doing with Excel. Not really releasing much
- 1:20:07information, but remake the, the Taylor for that again, quite
- 1:20:13simple. It was just like some overview
- 1:20:15of some jungle snake in a crocodile fighting and then Big
- 1:20:20Boss kind of moving forward from a Shadows but again simple
- 1:20:25understated but I didn't think much of it.
- 1:20:29So, okay, I'm not sure but maybe maybe it was a beloved game for
- 1:20:34both of us. Yeah.
- 1:20:35But I think that's probably a lot of it.
- 1:20:38Yeah. Yeah, understated and not giving
- 1:20:41too much. Which away I think is the best
- 1:20:43way to do a trailer in my opinion. yeah, and when I first
- 1:20:50saw that soda trailer and it's something says something along
- 1:20:54the lines of find out what happened 100 years ago.
- 1:20:59You think baby and it doesn't inside it really do this.
- 1:21:03You think maybe they're going to tell you tell a different story
- 1:21:08about Zelda. And this is why I love Majora's
- 1:21:10Mask because I love the fact that it was such a fresh
- 1:21:13different story, different take on the Zelda series.
- 1:21:18So that that kind of teases it, but you don't quite get that in
- 1:21:21the final game, which is a disappointment for me.
- 1:21:25But other other, I mentioned this during the silent.
- 1:21:28R2 Episode. I love the trailer for that game
- 1:21:32and I love the trade, the some of the Traders for Metal Gear
- 1:21:35Solid 2. I think they were fantastic and
- 1:21:40Yeah, it's making you compelled to play something.
- 1:21:48By giving you those tidbits and giving you those Snippets and
- 1:21:52trying to make you compelled to want to find out what happens
- 1:21:56around them. And I agree with you having
- 1:21:59having an understated trailer that makes you want to dive into
- 1:22:05the world. That shows you rather than tells
- 1:22:07you that's a good. You know though I like I'm a
- 1:22:11hypocrite because I say all this like this is what makes a good
- 1:22:14trailer but probably my favorite video game trailer that I've
- 1:22:17ever seen is the one for Assassin's Creed Unity where
- 1:22:22it's effectively. I think it's three or four
- 1:22:25assassins jumping over the rooftops in Paris with a cover
- 1:22:30of Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
- 1:22:32I think it's done by maybe Lord and Like it's just epic and it's
- 1:22:39a bombastic and it's ridiculous and it's probably my favorite
- 1:22:43game trailer ever seen. Even though it's the complete
- 1:22:45opposite of what I just said makes a good trailer.
- 1:22:47So you know maybe I don't have an answer for you.
- 1:22:51This that that. Did you like the Fallout 76
- 1:22:55trailer with Take Me Home Country Roads?
- 1:22:58Yeah I thought it was. All right I've heard the game
- 1:23:00was a pretty good trade as a shame the game.
- 1:23:02So yeah, yeah the trailer for now was house party.
- 1:23:07Oh yes, I was wondering when our good friend, mr.
- 1:23:11Blobby would be coming up. I had heard that there is
- 1:23:14actually a fifth Divine beast and if you don't actually use a
- 1:23:19fifth divided based in the DLC hoser.
- 1:23:22Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:23:22And as mr. Blobby the, the Boston I'm
- 1:23:25assuming he is he's the final boss actually with our good
- 1:23:30friend penguin and Postman Pat Mason and yes Postman Pat of
- 1:23:36course, I'm environments. Of course.
- 1:23:38Yeah, exactly. I've got, I've got a new
- 1:23:43question and it may be one that we carry forward to other
- 1:23:46episodes. Describe breath of the wild in
- 1:23:50one word. I'm not going to use the same
- 1:23:54word that Matthew mitosis used, which was Freedom.
- 1:23:58Although that was the first word that came to mind, I suppose, I
- 1:24:01would say, hmm. Ally.
- 1:24:11Okay. I like that.
- 1:24:12Yeah. Why the world just feels alive?
- 1:24:15And it feels like if you're not there things are going to
- 1:24:17continue happening around without you having an impact on
- 1:24:21the world. So I'm going to say alive.
- 1:24:23What would you say? It's a great one.
- 1:24:25Yeah, like that. the word I keep coming back to the
- 1:24:31personification of this world for me is Adventure.
- 1:24:35And when I think of Adventure and what this game makes me feel
- 1:24:41This game. And I'm going to save that for
- 1:24:44the conclusion actually because that's a good point.
- 1:24:48So when you're a kid, And I don't know you.
- 1:24:55We used to play outside with and this is what me and motor based
- 1:24:58the original game on. Isn't it from when he was a
- 1:25:00child? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:01And you, you might Do like a fancy thing.
- 1:25:06Where your characters from a we did that and this game feels
- 1:25:11like the game version of that in the very best way, it feels like
- 1:25:17a create your own adventure and that's why the keyword for me is
- 1:25:22a venture and we're going to go straight from that into our
- 1:25:25conclusions, does breath of the wild at number 9 on the
- 1:25:32Metacritic. Top 100 deserve to be on the
- 1:25:35list. Yes, it deserves to be in the
- 1:25:38list and I think it's in the right location. ocean, there are
- 1:25:45I think there is an over. What's the word I'm looking for
- 1:25:52and oversubscription of the Zelda games in the top 100 list?
- 1:25:56Yeah, there's probably too many in there.
- 1:25:58Yeah. But I think at the end of every
- 1:25:59Zelda game that we've talked about, I think I've probably
- 1:26:01said maybe bar one that I think it deserves to be there but we I
- 1:26:06think outside. So the two that we have had
- 1:26:10discourse on. I think I both Wind Waker
- 1:26:12toilets while success. Yeah.
- 1:26:15And maybe maybe a link to the past as well.
- 1:26:18I think. This game deserves to be here,
- 1:26:21and I'd say, I'd probably argue that it deserves to be here,
- 1:26:25over the others. I'm similar to you in that.
- 1:26:30I really liked this game but I also really like Majora's Mask
- 1:26:33whereas for you. So different, aren't they?
- 1:26:36Yeah. And I realize the conversation
- 1:26:38for you isn't just, I like Majora's Mask are like breath
- 1:26:41the wild. They're kind of tied on a for
- 1:26:44your favorite game of all time. Yeah.
- 1:26:47So I'll get into that a bit maybe.
- 1:26:50Be in in a bit. Yeah, but I can't decide if you
- 1:26:55accident only choose one, whether it be a Majora's Mask,
- 1:26:57or breath of the Wild on this list because I enjoy the themes
- 1:27:01and the look and the vibe of Majora's Mask a lot more.
- 1:27:05But I prefer the gameplay, the freedom and the lack of dungeons
- 1:27:09in this game more than Majora's Mask other than the weapon
- 1:27:13degradation. But yeah, this game deserves to
- 1:27:17be here and I think that is rightfully in the top.
- 1:27:20Then what do you have to say? When I hope a lot of to say it.
- 1:27:27So I'm just going to try and structure it so that I'm not
- 1:27:29blathering when I finish this game.
- 1:27:34I adored almost every element of this game, almost every element.
- 1:27:40The one thing that still feels stale to me.
- 1:27:45Is the setting and not not the world, I think it's brilliant
- 1:27:51but just we've seen higher rule, we seen the gorons and Death
- 1:27:56Mountain. We've seen the Zoras and Zoras
- 1:27:58Domain. We've got, we've got the desert
- 1:28:00and we've got the route owes their which is there.
- 1:28:02Nice additions and they were my favorite areas to explore in the
- 1:28:07game. Yeah, because they felt
- 1:28:09different. They felt you had not been there
- 1:28:10before. I wanted to see.
- 1:28:18This game play. This systemic nature of the
- 1:28:23world. This very beautiful world but in
- 1:28:28a different place I wanted to see the Majora's Mask of breath
- 1:28:32of the wild. I'm hoping that's what is our
- 1:28:35the kingdom is. But I'm also a bit skeptical
- 1:28:39because I feel like, All the elements are lined with Majora's
- 1:28:45Mask to make it what it was. And let's not forget.
- 1:28:48It had to, I think they're two directors, I think it was IGN
- 1:28:52Uma and also can't think of his name.
- 1:28:57Oh, so koizumi. Can't think it is.
- 1:29:02I'm not sure that's the last name.
- 1:29:04But yeah, so so koizumi. Who's now?
- 1:29:10I think he's on the Mario series.
- 1:29:11I think is very heavily involved in the Mario series, and that
- 1:29:14was his one's older game and he he brought the elements, he
- 1:29:17brought the dark elements to Majora's Mask.
- 1:29:19He bought the moon. He was the one who had that sort
- 1:29:23of existential dream of the Moon crashing into the Earth, and
- 1:29:28that's what spawned Majora's Mask, as a concept.
- 1:29:30Those were his Diaz and the interesting elements to Majora's
- 1:29:35Mask. A lot of them came from him.
- 1:29:37Yeah. And I would love to see the
- 1:29:41Majora's Mask to breath of the Wilds Ocarina of Time to see
- 1:29:47what that looks like a lot of the same stuff.
- 1:29:52But in that dark setting going down a dark path.
- 1:29:55Get rid of Zelda, get rid of Hyrule, get rid of Gannon, I
- 1:29:59don't want to see them again. I've seen enough of them.
- 1:30:03So that was one thing that I did come away thinking to me
- 1:30:07imagining what that game could be was a big thing.
- 1:30:10That being said let's not take anything away from what breath
- 1:30:13of the world is for me. when I played this game, it was A
- 1:30:21reminder of what games could be. It was a reminder that when I
- 1:30:26played this, I was 27 2017, I was 27 and it was a reminder
- 1:30:33that games. Can still take you back to your
- 1:30:35childhood. It was that sense of play and
- 1:30:40That was nice. I didn't think I'd ever get that
- 1:30:43again from a game and this game gave that to me.
- 1:30:47So it is a very special time for me, it was a game that when I
- 1:30:50wasn't playing and I think I've mentioned, I've used this
- 1:30:53description before when I wasn't playing this game, I was
- 1:30:56thinking about it. I was thinking about what I was
- 1:30:58going to do. Yeah, I was going to go next and
- 1:31:01games that can get their claws in.
- 1:31:03You like that are few and far between it's a very special
- 1:31:07game. Those combined combined elements
- 1:31:11of The game play. That Wilderness that is the
- 1:31:19world and the hostility of that and the systems at play.
- 1:31:25It's a, it's a really great blend.
- 1:31:28And one thing I wanted to mention, I thought I was nearly,
- 1:31:32I must have been about 130 140 hours in.
- 1:31:36I had covered a vast, majority of the map and I was probably
- 1:31:40searching for shrines. Yeah.
- 1:31:42And I had down, I believe it's the east side of the map, near
- 1:31:48the bottom and I discovered A village that I'd never seen
- 1:31:55before that, I had never seen any footage and it was its own
- 1:32:00unique thing. It had its own creatures there
- 1:32:03that you don't really see elsewhere, and it had its own
- 1:32:06side quests and people to talk to it was called rural rural in
- 1:32:10village and to me that just summarized breath of the wild,
- 1:32:15you've got this Village that no one references, that you
- 1:32:18wouldn't know, was there, unless you kind of gone out of your way
- 1:32:21to look for it. Yeah.
- 1:32:22Well, you come across it, and There are so few games that.
- 1:32:32Could resist not telling you about this Village.
- 1:32:37Say it was someone referencing it somewhere, but this Village
- 1:32:40is just sitting in isolation down there and that to me was
- 1:32:45just like when you saw the Dragon I was like what else can
- 1:32:50this game offer? And then it does that.
- 1:32:52And yeah every time you think you've seen everything it has do
- 1:32:56something else, it pulls back the curtain a little bit more
- 1:32:59and you see something else. This game felt very, very, very
- 1:33:02fresh in 2017. Even after a lot of games have
- 1:33:06tried to borrow things from imitate it, copy certain
- 1:33:09aspects. It still feels fresh.
- 1:33:11Yeah. And that's a great compliment.
- 1:33:15He deserves to be on the list, it deserves to be in the top 10.
- 1:33:20Now, I think today and this may change, I do.
- 1:33:25It's always a bit backwards and forwards today.
- 1:33:28I still think Majora's Mask is my favorite game and I think I
- 1:33:34enjoyed that even more than the last time we played it.
- 1:33:37Yeah, so yeah, I think that's still my favorite game but
- 1:33:42breath of the wild is that they're duking with it and to me
- 1:33:45it's probably. Well, it is its top five in my
- 1:33:48favorite games. So, it does deserve Have to be
- 1:33:50there. And it was it was really fun.
- 1:33:53Talking about it as well. I mean, the game that you can
- 1:33:55spend an hour and 34 minutes quite easily talking about.
- 1:33:59That's not many games that we've come across.
- 1:34:02Yes, flow. Yeah, let's wrap it up.
- 1:34:06Let's go home. All right, oh what we got?
- 1:34:11What we got coming up next time on the list so I remember.
- 1:34:14So this is a we got a special episode coming up.
- 1:34:16Next time, haven't we? Yeah, L.
- 1:34:20Yeah, you do have all the details.
- 1:34:23Okay. Next time we talked about this a
- 1:34:26few times. We've talked about an episode
- 1:34:28where we're going to look at individual genres.
- 1:34:34For example fighting racing Sports and we're going to
- 1:34:40briefly assess the games on the list within those genres and
- 1:34:44each pick a game that we think is the winner is the champion of
- 1:34:49that genre. So we'll set our genres and
- 1:34:52we'll both pick a champion and it's just our way of.
- 1:34:57We always have the question of our.
- 1:34:59What's the best adventure game on the list?
- 1:35:01Was the get best fighting game of those?
- 1:35:02We've had that one. I'm quite a few times, but this
- 1:35:05is an opportunity for us to actually say definitively what
- 1:35:09we think and although Champions. Yeah.
- 1:35:12And although we've done over 100 games, now breath of the wild is
- 1:35:17the 99th game from the original top, 100.
- 1:35:21So we've pretty much done them all.
- 1:35:23Now, bar one being Half-Life Alex, because technical
- 1:35:27limitations, which is it's only thing anyway, because it's VR.
- 1:35:30Yeah, yeah. So, You know, we've we've pretty
- 1:35:37much done the task that we started in February 20 20.
- 1:35:44So even though we've done both the ranking episodes and there
- 1:35:47will be another ranking episode after we've done all of the
- 1:35:49additional games that were added into the list as well as maybe
- 1:35:52the the other critic list that we're doing.
- 1:35:55Yeah, open wide open critic. But yeah, it's kind of coming to
- 1:36:01an end for our original list. Now, there are still a few games
- 1:36:03that have been added into the Metacritic that we still need to
- 1:36:07do. We've got the house in fata
- 1:36:09Morgana. We've got God of all Ragnarok.
- 1:36:14Ordering, Alden, ring and Street Fighter 6.
- 1:36:19That's just appeared. Yes, but that also, I think is
- 1:36:21on the open critic, isn't it? I'm sure I may be, but we'll
- 1:36:27have a look and maybe because otherwise we're just going to be
- 1:36:29adding to them forever. Ever.
- 1:36:30So I'll tears are the kingdom, of course.
- 1:36:32Here's the Kingdom. So I think we're gonna have to
- 1:36:34draw a line at some point finish.
- 1:36:36That will be the closure of the first chapter.
- 1:36:38Yes. Cost.
- 1:36:39Then. We're going on to our own games,
- 1:36:41which we've been excited to do for quite a while.
- 1:36:44So yeah that will be next week but in the meantime gets on
