- 0:44Speaker 3: Charleston, Hollow and Lisa Odie. Hello, we have a unique
- 0:50Speaker 3: kind of a show today. We're We're gonna have Todd
- 0:54Speaker 3: Scott who went to the University of Louisiana. He was
- 0:57Speaker 3: a six round draft pick for the Vikings in nineteen
- 1:01Speaker 3: ninety one. He did he had his first Pro Bowl
- 1:04Speaker 3: was in nineteen ninety two. Tease Got played seven years
- 1:10Speaker 3: in NFL from nineteen ninety one to ninety seven. He
- 1:13Speaker 3: was He also played for the Jets, Tampa Bay, Kansas
- 1:17Speaker 3: City Chiefs. We're also going to have the other corner
- 1:20Speaker 3: that played on the other side of me, Audrey McMillan
- 1:24Speaker 3: went to the University of Houston. Was drafted in the
- 1:27Speaker 3: third round by the New England Patriots. He played eight
- 1:30Speaker 3: seasons in the NFL nineteen eighty five to nineteen ninety three.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Was a Pro Bowl selection in ninety.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Two, led the league in interceptions in in ninety two
- 1:43Speaker 3: with eight interceptions. He played for the also played for
- 1:47Speaker 3: the Houston Ollers. Vincey Glenn went to the University of Indiana.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Was a New England Patriots second round pick, and he
- 1:56Speaker 3: was the fifty fourth, fifty fourth pick overall. That's a
- 2:01Speaker 3: to me, that's a that's a huge deal man, because
- 2:04Speaker 3: I mean, I think I was one hundred and something,
- 2:06Speaker 3: so he was in the nineteen eighty six draft. He
- 2:11Speaker 3: finished his career with fifty four interceptions and a bunch
- 2:16Speaker 3: of those. He'll claim that we're with the Vikings. Now,
- 2:18Speaker 3: I don't know if that's true or not.
- 2:21Speaker 4: He plays it really will.
- 2:25Speaker 3: He played for the Patriots and the San Diego Chargers
- 2:28Speaker 3: in his rookie season and would go on to play
- 2:30Speaker 3: for the New Orleans Saints, Vikings and New York Giants
- 2:34Speaker 3: and where he completed his career. Now, I don't know
- 2:39Speaker 3: if we have them all on yet, but we'll be
- 2:42Speaker 3: getting them. Hollis you know, at least I'm sure you're
- 2:47Speaker 3: aware of the types of bonds that you build when
- 2:51Speaker 3: you when you play with guys. Some guys, you know,
- 2:55Speaker 3: you can play a year with him and you can
- 2:57Speaker 3: grab this bond that is just so crazy, this group
- 3:02Speaker 3: of guys. And again I can't help, but I can't
- 3:05Speaker 3: help but give call them by their nicknames because I don't.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I don't.
- 3:08Speaker 3: I can't give them the fool that full of respect.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I guess if they want that, they need to.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Go somewhere else.
- 3:14Speaker 5: But like.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Watching these guys come in and playing with them, and
- 3:21Speaker 3: and just the way we would talk to each other
- 3:25Speaker 3: on the field versus off the field in the locker room,
- 3:27Speaker 3: it was.
- 3:28Speaker 4: It was crazy.
- 3:30Speaker 3: But what you also have is you have four guys
- 3:33Speaker 3: who are all different personalities completely. Todd Scott and Audrew
- 3:39Speaker 3: McMillan are two I think I would call them two
- 3:45Speaker 3: really business type guys that that left the league and
- 3:48Speaker 3: really became more so focused on business and things like that.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Not saying that Vincey didn't or I didn't, but me
- 3:56Speaker 3: and Vincey are kind of like kind of the wild
- 3:59Speaker 3: spirits of of of the group, and and and it
- 4:04Speaker 3: was interesting to see how we all kind of played together.
- 4:07Speaker 3: So do I have Do I have some guys out there?
- 4:11Speaker 3: Is Mic out there? That's that's the guy I haven't
- 4:13Speaker 3: talked to it a long time. Where's mac at hey?
- 4:16Speaker 6: Coach? Coach? Coach? All I need to know is who's
- 4:19Speaker 6: on the lie because at the end of the day,
- 4:21Speaker 6: you know, probably the last one call card here. I'm
- 4:26Speaker 6: gonna have a problem with that tea. You know, I'm
- 4:29Speaker 6: always but you know, when he ain't got nobody else
- 4:32Speaker 6: called macmillan. Everybody that went to all the pointment then
- 4:37Speaker 6: called macmillan because he'll fill in. I'm here, fellas, I
- 4:41Speaker 6: cannot help you all this.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Well, let me.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I can't imagine that the Glenn has not said something already.
- 4:49Speaker 4: To to to come back at you all. That's the
- 4:52Speaker 4: first thing I agree. It is Vincy on the line.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Man.
- 4:59Speaker 5: First of all, there you go here here because I
- 5:03Speaker 5: haven't heard Argie matc Millan's voice in two years, y'all.
- 5:09Speaker 5: It's been a long time, too long, man. And I
- 5:12Speaker 5: love all my brothers, but Argie matc Millan's man.
- 5:15Speaker 6: I want the world, So.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Vincy Glenn loves you and your family.
- 5:20Speaker 6: Man, you heard.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Wait, wait before we get into all of that.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Okay, before we get in and all that, let me
- 5:28Speaker 3: just say this about Vincy Glenn. Vincy Glenn, I love
- 5:31Speaker 3: your family, anybody that's related to you, anybody that you
- 5:36Speaker 3: played with.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I don't care really that much about you. I had to.
- 5:40Speaker 3: My my co host, my co host, whether two who
- 5:44Speaker 3: had to try to get make me get you on
- 5:46Speaker 3: the show because I was considered doing the show without you.
- 5:50Speaker 3: But let me let me introduce you. Let me introduce
- 5:52Speaker 3: you to my co host, Hollis Lewis. He's he's a guy,
- 5:58Speaker 3: a former player quarter back at West Virginia State. He's
- 6:02Speaker 3: in the political realm now. And Lisa Odie who is
- 6:07Speaker 3: we know her as.
- 6:07Speaker 4: The football queen. She knows all about football. She's she's
- 6:11Speaker 4: the one who goes in and digs out all the information.
- 6:13Speaker 7: And she did say, Vincy, she.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Couldn't find a lot of information on you. But but
- 6:18Speaker 3: that's another story.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Don't let that touch all right, keep me, keep keep
- 6:30Speaker 6: me in control. Man, there you go, that's what let
- 6:34Speaker 6: that touch you? I did, all right.
- 6:40Speaker 3: So let's so so let's let's get let's get this,
- 6:43Speaker 3: Let's get the let's get the show started. Let's just
- 6:45Speaker 3: try to see if we can stay on the track.
- 6:48Speaker 3: All right, So let me if I have to be
- 6:51Speaker 3: serious for a moment. This group of guys to me
- 6:56Speaker 3: and and I and I played with a lot, a
- 6:58Speaker 3: lot of dbs in in the league at the Vikings.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Willie Tiel is one of those guys that I really
- 7:04Speaker 3: made a good bond with Rufus and all those kind
- 7:07Speaker 3: of guys JT all those kind of guys. This group
- 7:10Speaker 3: here has has this has a really unique kind of
- 7:16Speaker 3: I can say love.
- 7:19Speaker 4: With them from me to them, them to me.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Maybe because it was, like I don't I don't know
- 7:25Speaker 3: if anybody really expected a whole lot from us, And
- 7:30Speaker 3: I think us and the rest of the defense, I
- 7:33Speaker 3: think really came in and created something that was really
- 7:37Speaker 3: really special.
- 7:38Speaker 4: And am I saying that, guys, or am I touch that?
- 7:42Speaker 3: Because I know I know that, And you had a
- 7:44Speaker 3: Pro Bowl career and we had we had announced all
- 7:47Speaker 3: that prior to you guys getting on.
- 7:48Speaker 4: I know you had a Pro Bowl career, And.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Tell me how you feel about the relationships, and I
- 7:56Speaker 3: know this is one of the very few few times
- 7:59Speaker 3: we've got a chance that I talked. But the bonds
- 8:01Speaker 3: that we had when we were playing, and the and
- 8:04Speaker 3: the belief we had in each other was was one
- 8:07Speaker 3: of those kind of amazing things.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Talk a little bit about that if you can.
- 8:12Speaker 6: Let me start with the fact that you know what
- 8:14Speaker 6: our fear of this leader called Lee and I eventually
- 8:16Speaker 6: hold your horses here. Now, remember you came from San
- 8:19Speaker 6: Diego out there on the West coast, and you know
- 8:21Speaker 6: everything was funny and blaring and everything was great. But
- 8:24Speaker 6: you know when you got them visited, we was already
- 8:27Speaker 6: locked in. You know, we was tired. You know you help.
- 8:30Speaker 6: I'm telling you. You came along and really you helped
- 8:33Speaker 6: us do what we needed to do. But see Lee,
- 8:36Speaker 6: when I got that you joined Brown and everybody, man,
- 8:39Speaker 6: I had come out of all us for five years
- 8:41Speaker 6: with four years I played there, and one of my
- 8:44Speaker 6: best years of playing football outside of high school has
- 8:48Speaker 6: always been with you guys, because we were a family
- 8:50Speaker 6: in the back. We had great coaches, guys who understood.
- 8:53Speaker 6: I remember Coach Shaw telling us one time. You know,
- 8:56Speaker 6: I said, Coach, what you want me to play bubb
- 8:57Speaker 6: and rods or you wanna play off on to go
- 8:59Speaker 6: like he said, son, don't care what you play, just
- 9:01Speaker 6: make sure they don't score. I said, that's what I
- 9:03Speaker 6: want to hear, Coach, you was pumping run, were pumping run.
- 9:07Speaker 6: So we had to get up on them. And thank god,
- 9:09Speaker 6: we had two solid safeties behind us. You know them
- 9:12Speaker 6: on strong brothers. All we had to do is call
- 9:14Speaker 6: the player, let us do the work up front, and
- 9:16Speaker 6: they know they had us in the back. And not
- 9:18Speaker 6: only did we enjoy time on the field together and
- 9:21Speaker 6: success on the field, we just didn't have a quarterback
- 9:24Speaker 6: and could get us to the prompt defense. But at
- 9:27Speaker 6: the end of the day, guys, that family that we
- 9:31Speaker 6: built in the backfield left. I mean, even Joey Brown,
- 9:34Speaker 6: even he was old, right, he was really really Joey.
- 9:37Speaker 6: Now we can't forget Joey, but not Joy was the
- 9:40Speaker 6: one that he he just was different than the four
- 9:42Speaker 6: of us back there, but he was there with us.
- 9:44Speaker 6: But the end time defense realized and recognized that the
- 9:49Speaker 6: secondary was solid. And that's one thing I am very
- 9:52Speaker 6: very proud of. And it's been thirty years since I've
- 9:55Speaker 6: been back and talk to you guys, but everything here
- 9:59Speaker 6: that just happen.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And Mike and one of the things we got to
- 10:02Speaker 3: do is we got to make sure we get to
- 10:03Speaker 3: the same We got to come to a game this
- 10:05Speaker 3: season so we could see each other.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Got you got you guys all right, Scott, Yes, sir.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Tell us a little bit about your your your your bonding,
- 10:16Speaker 3: the relationship with the with the vikings, with the group.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Just kind of give us a quick spiel. I'm trying
- 10:25Speaker 3: to get everybody to kind of give their quick spill.
- 10:27Speaker 6: It's going to be different for me because when I
- 10:30Speaker 6: when I came in as a rookie, all of you
- 10:32Speaker 6: guys were veteran players. Y'all all played at least seven
- 10:35Speaker 6: or eight you're ten years or more. So for me
- 10:39Speaker 6: as a young player coming in and getting to see
- 10:42Speaker 6: how you guys went about doing things and just understanding
- 10:46Speaker 6: what it was to be a pro. Uh, you guys
- 10:49Speaker 6: taught me everything I know about being a pro on
- 10:54Speaker 6: and off the field. So it probably with me, it
- 10:58Speaker 6: probably had the greatest impact because I had the opportunity
- 11:02Speaker 6: to watch you guys while I was in high school
- 11:04Speaker 6: and college then come in to play with you guys
- 11:07Speaker 6: and actually be a teammate. That was really, really, really
- 11:12Speaker 6: something for me. And but the but the interesting thing
- 11:15Speaker 6: is was just you guys were not just weren't just
- 11:19Speaker 6: mentors for me. Y'all were truly big brothers and were
- 11:22Speaker 6: concerned with me more so even more so off the
- 11:25Speaker 6: field and the things I did, how I carried myself,
- 11:27Speaker 6: and what I did even then just on the field.
- 11:30Speaker 6: So a lot of those life lessons I've really taken
- 11:33Speaker 6: with me, you know, taken with me. I know you
- 11:35Speaker 6: were mentioning it early, just even with Audrey and I Audrey,
- 11:39Speaker 6: I've had the benefit of enjoying a twenty five year
- 11:42Speaker 6: of real estate investing career, uh that Audrey got me
- 11:46Speaker 6: into over twenty five years years ago, and I'm still
- 11:50Speaker 6: using that to generate generational wealth for my family. But
- 11:53Speaker 6: I mean just just over the over the over the
- 11:57Speaker 6: that time and over the years, you guys have been
- 12:00Speaker 6: confidant advisors, big brothers, uh, hilarious comedians and it's too
- 12:11Speaker 6: much go ahead, it's too much the name, but for
- 12:14Speaker 6: because you guys are more peers and I was kind
- 12:17Speaker 6: of like the little brother. I think my take on
- 12:20Speaker 6: it is a lot different.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Okay, Bi Glenn, you see what I'm saying.
- 12:31Speaker 5: You hear be better my two my three years there.
- 12:37Speaker 5: But especially my first two in Minnesota were my my
- 12:42Speaker 5: two favorite years. Playing in the secondary with guys and
- 12:46Speaker 5: then playing on the defense because I had just come
- 12:49Speaker 5: from New Orleans in ninety one and we were the
- 12:52Speaker 5: number one defense in the league down in New Orleans
- 12:54Speaker 5: and I signed us a free agent. And remember Phelix
- 12:57Speaker 5: Felix Wright was there. Yeah, yeah, Will, he had us Will,
- 13:01Speaker 5: he had us alternateause he really wanted me to start.
- 13:05Speaker 6: Will.
- 13:05Speaker 5: He had us alternated like a quarter here, the quarter there.
- 13:08Speaker 5: In the first game of the season, like the first
- 13:10Speaker 5: quarter I picked off a magic man Green Bay. And
- 13:15Speaker 5: a couple of games later, you.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Know, maybe just in case you wanted the fact that
- 13:23Speaker 3: you said that you may not have heard Lisa in
- 13:26Speaker 3: the background saying what she is a diehard Packer fan.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Just show you.
- 13:38Speaker 7: You should see the cheese had I have on right now. Guys,
- 13:41Speaker 7: Come on, now, come on.
- 13:46Speaker 5: I made a green.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Said that you soon.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Had a secret.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not getting keeping sick.
- 14:00Speaker 7: I'm just not good at it.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Go ahead and finish.
- 14:04Speaker 6: But anyway, coming there and.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Just bonding with you guys, and it was more about
- 14:12Speaker 5: the communication level you all. You guys were all pro
- 14:16Speaker 5: but the way we communicated easily on and off the field,
- 14:20Speaker 5: but more than anything got we all bought in man
- 14:23Speaker 5: And I'm gonna give kudos to Willie Shaw, yeah, putting
- 14:26Speaker 5: us together. I reckon us to the movie Ben heard
- 14:30Speaker 5: when they had all of the horses and they just
- 14:33Speaker 5: quite wasn't working together, and then you get this one
- 14:36Speaker 5: guy that brings it in and gets the horses running
- 14:38Speaker 5: in the right water and they go on to win,
- 14:41Speaker 5: win the Gladiator Award and all that stuff. That's how
- 14:44Speaker 5: I see us as that group of guys. We were
- 14:47Speaker 5: all different in our own ways, we had our own styles,
- 14:50Speaker 5: but when we got together, we were held on wheels,
- 14:53Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying. And that was the beauty
- 14:55Speaker 5: of watching the maturation of that. Then when we hit
- 14:58Speaker 5: our stride, they man or you know, and that and
- 15:01Speaker 5: that was a big blow I think really to all
- 15:04Speaker 5: of us at that particular point in time.
- 15:07Speaker 3: And guys, I've talked to Willie not too not really,
- 15:12Speaker 3: not that long ago, and I'm going to have him
- 15:15Speaker 3: on the show at some point also.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Just so that he can talk about it.
- 15:21Speaker 3: But you know, when you start talking about a coach
- 15:23Speaker 3: and you start talking about the unity of the group,
- 15:27Speaker 3: the unique thing about which I think people will be
- 15:30Speaker 3: kind of crazy, will think that the way he coached
- 15:33Speaker 3: his thing was if you had a way to do something,
- 15:37Speaker 3: he wasn't gonna change it. You do it, and if
- 15:40Speaker 3: it works, it works, and now if it don't work.
- 15:43Speaker 3: The issue for him was, you know, at least it
- 15:46Speaker 3: was like, it's my job I don't have as long
- 15:49Speaker 3: as it's working, you can do it. The moment it
- 15:51Speaker 3: stops working, it's my job that we got to start
- 15:54Speaker 3: dealing with.
- 15:55Speaker 8: So it's kind of like a not the opposite of
- 15:58Speaker 8: a helicopter, just kind of once, if it works, go
- 16:01Speaker 8: do it.
- 16:01Speaker 7: Guys.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I like it. Either one of you guys.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Hold on, I'm gonna have my hoes jump in here.
- 16:07Speaker 9: How you doing, guys. It's great to have you guys
- 16:09Speaker 9: on the show. What I'm interested in is that, again,
- 16:13Speaker 9: we talk about on this show a lot as far
- 16:15Speaker 9: as different eras and being at you all are DB's
- 16:19Speaker 9: and the things that you could do in the eighties
- 16:21Speaker 9: and nineties, when you're looking at the game today, sort
- 16:24Speaker 9: of what is your assessment of football and and how
- 16:28Speaker 9: it's played in this modern era?
- 16:31Speaker 5: Seven on seven I watched it.
- 16:36Speaker 6: I'm watching seven on seven man, they say, no, you
- 16:38Speaker 6: can't touch the receivers. Man, you hit them at tenty
- 16:41Speaker 6: and fives. I mean, it'd be real, it'd be real
- 16:45Speaker 6: tough for us to play now. It'd be really, really
- 16:48Speaker 6: tough to play now. I mean, man, Audrey, they all
- 16:54Speaker 6: have to put their hands on you. But imagine how
- 16:59Speaker 6: good it would be for us right now. You didn't
- 17:02Speaker 6: have to worry about tackling. You didn't have to worry
- 17:04Speaker 6: about it. If you got beat, you gonna get cut.
- 17:07Speaker 6: I can't believe what they letn't get away.
- 17:11Speaker 5: I agree.
- 17:12Speaker 6: You know what, when you get beat, you couldn't go
- 17:15Speaker 6: back and sit on that bench without folks looking.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Too crazy right now, so the station, let me clip.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Let me say this real quick. So just just look
- 17:26Speaker 5: at this perception. Guys, when we played in our era,
- 17:32Speaker 5: every time we landed up on the football field against
- 17:35Speaker 5: particular teams, we played against future Hall of famers. We
- 17:40Speaker 5: didn't play against backup quarterbacks. But ten twelve years avalone
- 17:44Speaker 5: you played, when you played Broncos, you played against that
- 17:47Speaker 5: way when you played forty nine ers, you have Montana
- 17:49Speaker 5: and you played against the same great quarterbacks every year.
- 17:53Speaker 5: These guys don't even play fourty twelve games hardly on that.
- 17:59Speaker 5: He's a fact of it. We would succeed anyway, because
- 18:02Speaker 5: these quarterbacks are garbage.
- 18:10Speaker 6: Five years.
- 18:13Speaker 5: So you can't get past the first six guys in
- 18:18Speaker 5: the NFL and quarterback and say name me the top
- 18:21Speaker 5: six guys. After you get the number five, you become
- 18:23Speaker 5: a right let's see.
- 18:28Speaker 6: You're doing that. You don't do that.
- 18:31Speaker 4: All right, So hold on for a second.
- 18:32Speaker 3: So for anybody who's a listener of the show and
- 18:37Speaker 3: has a favorite quarterback, let's be clear how that guys
- 18:41Speaker 3: feel about.
- 18:44Speaker 7: I think they made it more more than clear.
- 18:48Speaker 6: Yes, sir, can I this and that? I just want
- 18:51Speaker 6: to interject this small little tad. Hey, God, y'all don't
- 18:55Speaker 6: remember how y'all dogged me. Why did you even bring
- 19:00Speaker 6: up waves over me on.
- 19:02Speaker 5: The gold Man?
- 19:03Speaker 8: Oh Man, dark time to say, dark man, we're not
- 19:11Speaker 8: even talking to me.
- 19:12Speaker 6: I had him corner on the one yard line. He's
- 19:15Speaker 6: two hundred and forty pounds and he run over me
- 19:18Speaker 6: on the goal line, and scort y'all wouldn't even talk
- 19:19Speaker 6: to me on.
- 19:20Speaker 4: The Well, let's make it clear. We're talking to you now.
- 19:27Speaker 6: We we forgive you. Now, that's the longest. That's the
- 19:33Speaker 6: longest walker, longest walking my career back to that bench
- 19:36Speaker 6: and knowing.
- 19:40Speaker 5: But made too many good plays man to remember that
- 19:43Speaker 5: kind of stuff. Man.
- 19:44Speaker 3: No, no, Now, I'm gonna make the case that everybody
- 19:48Speaker 3: is gonna remember the worst play more so than the
- 19:50Speaker 3: best play.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Oh yeah, So so I get that. Lisa, you you
- 19:55Speaker 4: got a question.
- 19:56Speaker 8: Well, I just first of all, I want to know, guys,
- 19:58Speaker 8: how do I get a cool nickname? Mac and ve
- 20:01Speaker 8: Glenn and my name doesn't work for any of that, Like,
- 20:04Speaker 8: how do I make Lisa Odie something cool like Seeley
- 20:06Speaker 8: or I don't know, you guys want to help think
- 20:09Speaker 8: of something on that one.
- 20:10Speaker 4: But well, she's the football queen, but she's not what.
- 20:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess that cool queen works. I guess all right, guys.
- 20:16Speaker 8: So so I'm just gonna throw this question out to
- 20:18Speaker 8: all three of you guys, and you can answer in
- 20:21Speaker 8: any order. But we all remember the moment back in
- 20:24Speaker 8: the playoffs when aj Brown, the Eagles wide receiver, they
- 20:29Speaker 8: showed him on the sideline reading a copy of Inner Excellence,
- 20:32Speaker 8: and he said that was the way that he kind
- 20:34Speaker 8: of dealt with the pressures of a game.
- 20:36Speaker 7: And so I was wondering, what are.
- 20:37Speaker 8: Some things that you guys used to do on the
- 20:39Speaker 8: sidelines to kind of relieve pressure when you were, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 8: waiting to get back out on the field.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Am I allowed to answer that before then?
- 20:48Speaker 8: Absolutely, whoever wants to go, I want to hear these stories.
- 20:51Speaker 4: I want to make this because it might make it
- 20:53Speaker 4: easy for them.
- 20:54Speaker 7: Okay.
- 20:55Speaker 3: The fact that you knew, the fact that I knew
- 20:57Speaker 3: that Vincey and and te Scott.
- 21:01Speaker 4: And Mike was sitting beside me, that.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Was that was pressure enough to know that you did
- 21:07Speaker 3: not want to make a mistake.
- 21:11Speaker 7: Pressure pressure, It was.
- 21:13Speaker 3: This was what I think is is different Now you
- 21:17Speaker 3: don't you don't need to go anywhere.
- 21:19Speaker 4: We coming straight to.
- 21:20Speaker 3: You and and ain't no fighting, ain't nobody gonna throw
- 21:23Speaker 3: no blues. But you gotta accept whatever it is that
- 21:26Speaker 3: they say to you.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Okay, I mean, like you you have kind.
- 21:30Speaker 7: Of vented to each other. That's kind of what you
- 21:32Speaker 7: did if you called it venting.
- 21:33Speaker 6: But we were good. We didn't we didn't have we
- 21:36Speaker 6: didn't make We were so good. That's why because level
- 21:42Speaker 6: was there, it was important, it was important convincing to it.
- 21:48Speaker 6: It's like they said earlier, with Coach Shaw. He taught
- 21:51Speaker 6: us a sense of accountability. If you're gonna, if you're gonna,
- 21:55Speaker 6: you're gonna play covered too, You're gonna get the you're
- 21:57Speaker 6: gonna get the receiver inside. Because you know, I had
- 21:59Speaker 6: to get into Vince. I had to get him the
- 22:01Speaker 6: tour core man core core core, you remember, get him inside,
- 22:06Speaker 6: Mac and I got him. I got him at least
- 22:10Speaker 6: at least. Let me say this, It was great accountability.
- 22:15Speaker 6: But but we were the number one second. They were
- 22:17Speaker 6: the number one defense and the number one secondary two
- 22:20Speaker 6: years in a row. So you're talking about a really
- 22:22Speaker 6: good group of guys. One of the things I to
- 22:25Speaker 6: this day, and he's heard me say that a lot
- 22:28Speaker 6: of times. Karl had this thing. He would always say,
- 22:30Speaker 6: if you dropped the pick or something, you don't want
- 22:33Speaker 6: to be great, You're just happy being good.
- 22:38Speaker 7: I like that.
- 22:40Speaker 5: You know, when you see you dropped a big practice
- 22:44Speaker 5: we make We would make you feels to go run
- 22:47Speaker 5: after practice, even though we didn't have to run after practice.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Mac us see, they would say, man, let's go get
- 22:52Speaker 5: something in and we go do our own on sprints.
- 22:56Speaker 5: That's how we work now.
- 22:58Speaker 3: And I want, I want, I want to make sure
- 23:00Speaker 3: that if you're listening to this, and I know it
- 23:02Speaker 3: can get jumbled up because everybody's talking at one time,
- 23:05Speaker 3: I want you to understand what they're saying. They are
- 23:07Speaker 3: saying player accountability. They're talking about player accountability. Where I
- 23:13Speaker 3: make the case today, if Hollis me and Hollis Is
- 23:16Speaker 3: on the same team and he yelled at me because
- 23:18Speaker 3: I did something wrong, I'm yelling back at him and
- 23:21Speaker 3: cussing at him, and like we get ready to go
- 23:23Speaker 3: to blow. There was never a thought of us ever
- 23:27Speaker 3: thinking about being mad at each other. You had to
- 23:31Speaker 3: be accountable for that, sure, you know. And the person
- 23:35Speaker 3: that was gonna keep you accountable.
- 23:37Speaker 7: Was the group was us for your teammates, those teammates.
- 23:41Speaker 3: And I think that's something that they Hollis ain't gonna
- 23:45Speaker 3: tell me what to do. He only play my position,
- 23:46Speaker 3: he played quarterback. How he gonna tell me what to do?
- 23:50Speaker 3: That's how it is now. Yeah, And I think that's
- 23:53Speaker 3: where a lot of the issues breakdown. That's the breakdown
- 23:56Speaker 3: of what I think is great teamwork.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 9: I was just gonna just to follow up with that
- 24:04Speaker 9: when you're talking about you know, today's game.
- 24:08Speaker 4: You know, at the NFL level.
- 24:10Speaker 9: Also, we've talked a lot about, you know, the collegiate
- 24:13Speaker 9: level and what's going on with n I L. So
- 24:15Speaker 9: from a former player perspective, what is your what are
- 24:18Speaker 9: you guys thoughts on on n I L and in
- 24:21Speaker 9: collegiate athletics.
- 24:25Speaker 6: I think the n L is gonna ru aead. I
- 24:30Speaker 6: think I think n I L is is is really
- 24:33Speaker 6: ruined in college athletics because there's no.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Loyalty.
- 24:38Speaker 6: You won't have guys who will spend two or three
- 24:40Speaker 6: years out of university. They they're basically free agents as
- 24:44Speaker 6: you would see it in pro football. So you don't
- 24:47Speaker 6: have a chance to build a camaraderie. You don't have
- 24:49Speaker 6: the chance to build the continuity because because the dollars
- 24:53Speaker 6: can make you switch schools every year.
- 24:56Speaker 5: You don't have kind to be a kid. When you're
- 25:00Speaker 5: being a kid sixteen, seventeen years old, five six million dollars,
- 25:04Speaker 5: you know all the vultures and the people around them,
- 25:07Speaker 5: and the reality is of life. So I come to
- 25:09Speaker 5: college and I'm making five million six minutes. Then they
- 25:12Speaker 5: talking about going to PROS and they want me as
- 25:14Speaker 5: a free agent. Man, I'm taking a pay.
- 25:16Speaker 6: Cut to the pros.
- 25:18Speaker 5: That's crazy. It don't even sound right, you know what
- 25:21Speaker 5: I'm saying. But then there's the dark side of the
- 25:23Speaker 5: NIL is that how many kids in the portal system.
- 25:27Speaker 5: How many kids get caught up in the portal system,
- 25:30Speaker 5: and because they don't have paperwork to get into other schools,
- 25:33Speaker 5: school they schools. There are a lot of schools that
- 25:35Speaker 5: still require you to have some paperwork. You ain't just
- 25:38Speaker 5: go play horse and we gonna pay you. And that's
- 25:41Speaker 5: why schools is saying, Okay, the school's gonna pay us.
- 25:44Speaker 5: And now we did back if you went crazy, man,
- 25:48Speaker 5: we get got got you can pay them. Got to
- 25:51Speaker 5: have a baby.
- 25:52Speaker 6: Hey, hey, Micky min every three every year, that killed
- 25:56Speaker 6: a program and you can't keep a coaching.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Hey, Mike, let me ask you this question. Okay, here
- 26:02Speaker 3: in West Virginia, they're considering to make NIL.
- 26:08Speaker 4: For high school.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Oh my goodness.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Okay, So please, if.
- 26:14Speaker 3: As a former player, as a businessman, give me your advice,
- 26:20Speaker 3: or give the folks out there who's thinking about doing that,
- 26:24Speaker 3: give them some kind of advice.
- 26:26Speaker 4: What would you tell them?
- 26:28Speaker 6: What? The only thing I can tell you right now,
- 26:32Speaker 6: I was just at home up in East Texas for
- 26:34Speaker 6: mother's day. My eighty one year old mama still living
- 26:37Speaker 6: and I have enough view that's already transferred back to
- 26:41Speaker 6: a high school. It's ruined. Money has ruined everything in
- 26:46Speaker 6: this country. And at the end of the day, we'll
- 26:50Speaker 6: destroy all of us. And at the end of the day,
- 26:52Speaker 6: there's no more lawty, there's no more commitment, there's no
- 26:55Speaker 6: more camaraderie, there's no more faithfulness. At the end of
- 26:58Speaker 6: the day. When you start teaching that lessening to kids,
- 27:01Speaker 6: this ends up with nothing but dispaster. There's no faithfulness
- 27:05Speaker 6: to nobody, no commitment to nobody. It's just a bad situation.
- 27:09Speaker 6: I've had stories from people with this in our hell guys,
- 27:14Speaker 6: parents are leaving their hometown going with that kids. That's
- 27:18Speaker 6: too much of a burden. But Vincent said, kids need
- 27:21Speaker 6: to be kids, and we need to like Willie Shaw,
- 27:24Speaker 6: I had a dad. But Willie Shaw was like a
- 27:26Speaker 6: father to me. Y'all remember a game we lost one time.
- 27:29Speaker 6: We was all sitting out there on the sideline and
- 27:30Speaker 6: he told us, guys, and I tell her story all
- 27:33Speaker 6: the time. He shouldn't be too high. You can't get
- 27:36Speaker 6: too low. You got to have a little better And
- 27:38Speaker 6: I thought to live my life. You can't get way
- 27:40Speaker 6: up and you can't get way down somewhere consistency, and
- 27:45Speaker 6: when you sign that contact as a freshman, you don't
- 27:48Speaker 6: have any idea none. On the face. School was always
- 27:53Speaker 6: a problem with us. Now it's even god worse. You
- 27:55Speaker 6: don't even have to go to school anymore. So what
- 27:57Speaker 6: are we doing? Were back to the plantation and thinking
- 28:00Speaker 6: and we're back to just serving. Its working and we're
- 28:03Speaker 6: never ever thinking about the holistic approach to the child
- 28:07Speaker 6: and the student and your kids that does not look
- 28:11Speaker 6: at the fact that my kid need to be with
- 28:13Speaker 6: somebody that cares about my kid like I do. I'm
- 28:16Speaker 6: going to buy paying this money and focus on the
- 28:19Speaker 6: development of my child. And that's one thing that media
- 28:22Speaker 6: and everything else is doing to us. It's killing our
- 28:25Speaker 6: kids and our generation of people. We will, like like
- 28:29Speaker 6: men to say we won't allow our kids to grow
- 28:31Speaker 6: up and be mature, and eventually it's gonna kept catch
- 28:34Speaker 6: up with us as a nation. It's say, wow, I
- 28:38Speaker 6: hear you. Let me let me add this. Let me
- 28:41Speaker 6: add this seem one of one of the aspects and
- 28:43Speaker 6: not looking at is the lack of financial literacy either
- 28:47Speaker 6: with the seventeen eighteen year old, you know, and most
- 28:49Speaker 6: of these kids come up a family where they didn't
- 28:51Speaker 6: have a lot, so no one in that family has
- 28:54Speaker 6: the financial literacy, so they be givet if I'm paying
- 28:57Speaker 6: to keep five hundred thousand or what?
- 29:00Speaker 5: Ever?
- 29:01Speaker 6: Who who really understands the tax implicate implications that I
- 29:04Speaker 6: have a lot of friends who are agents and and
- 29:07Speaker 6: uh just people who represent other kids. They say, that's
- 29:09Speaker 6: one of the major problems that's rarely ever talked about.
- 29:12Speaker 6: A lot of these kids have a tax bill that
- 29:14Speaker 6: they can't pay because they spent the money. They have
- 29:17Speaker 6: no idea how it worked, no idea.
- 29:20Speaker 5: Well, first of all, the parents are not even in
- 29:23Speaker 5: that tax Brad, you know what I'm saying when they
- 29:29Speaker 5: when they sitting there grounding to make one hundred thousands
- 29:32Speaker 5: between both households, even if that and all of a
- 29:35Speaker 5: sudden you got you got your kids making all this money.
- 29:38Speaker 5: So all you thinking about is your easiness in life.
- 29:42Speaker 5: They ain't really thinking about their kids. You're like, man,
- 29:44Speaker 5: this kid, man, I burn them through.
- 29:45Speaker 6: I don't have to.
- 29:48Speaker 5: Know all that all this time. Man, let me don't
- 29:51Speaker 5: get better. And then you got the cousins and the
- 29:53Speaker 5: uscles and all and being pulled from Rex and so
- 29:56Speaker 5: it's stuff on kids out there. It's hard being those
- 30:00Speaker 5: the media.
- 30:01Speaker 8: Question, you know, social media, so that's another thing in
- 30:04Speaker 8: itself that's really hard for kids to.
- 30:06Speaker 6: Deal with, you know, you know, to Vincy's point, being
- 30:11Speaker 6: a younger player, when I came in, I had called
- 30:15Speaker 6: Mac and Vincy that I could talk to about man
- 30:17Speaker 6: but you know what, you know, what do I do
- 30:19Speaker 6: from a tax situation? How should I you know, how
- 30:21Speaker 6: should I manage my money? They did a lot of
- 30:25Speaker 6: educating and training me on what the NFL, the intervel
- 30:28Speaker 6: stands are not for long and how to how to
- 30:30Speaker 6: save my money, how to invest my money had I
- 30:32Speaker 6: not had them at twenty two years old. You know,
- 30:35Speaker 6: I'm from jalax In, Texas. My parents my parents was
- 30:37Speaker 6: a high school guidance counselor and a middle school principal.
- 30:40Speaker 6: We didn't come from money, but they're they're tutelision. Their
- 30:43Speaker 6: education helped me be able to prepare and sustain myself
- 30:47Speaker 6: long term. I remember just my first introduction to all
- 30:51Speaker 6: to a four one K when they had the four
- 30:52Speaker 6: one K meeting. I remember Calle just say listen, come
- 30:55Speaker 6: in here with us and just do what I tell
- 30:57Speaker 6: you to do. I was like, okay, that's sound like confidence. Listen,
- 31:05Speaker 6: enough confidence and enough trust and faith in in his
- 31:09Speaker 6: advice and Audrey and Vincy, and that's you know, from
- 31:13Speaker 6: nineteen ninety nine, nineteen ninety two to now. Man, that's
- 31:16Speaker 6: worked out very very well, very very well for me.
- 31:19Speaker 6: But I had someone that I could turn to that
- 31:22Speaker 6: could give me instruction, guidance, and some leadership.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Lisa's got a question.
- 31:26Speaker 8: I've got some individual questions for you guys, If that's okay,
- 31:30Speaker 8: I'll start start with Mike. So, Mike, you you actually
- 31:35Speaker 8: went to school at the University of Houston, correct.
- 31:38Speaker 5: And you.
- 31:41Speaker 6: No, I graduated in three and a half years. See,
- 31:43Speaker 6: I like to go past with anything about that.
- 31:51Speaker 7: So much, so let me let me let me get
- 31:54Speaker 7: to my point.
- 31:54Speaker 8: Sorry, you were in high school, you were a highly
- 31:59Speaker 8: recruited her back, and so you were from what I
- 32:03Speaker 8: what I read, and you can correct me if I'm wrong,
- 32:05Speaker 8: you were the first African American freshman to start as
- 32:09Speaker 8: a quarterback of the University of Euston.
- 32:10Speaker 7: Is that correct?
- 32:12Speaker 6: That's not correct, that's incorrect. There were other quarterbacks before me.
- 32:17Speaker 6: I was the first quarterback to start as a freshman.
- 32:19Speaker 7: Okay, sorry I left that detail. I've got it written here.
- 32:22Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 32:22Speaker 7: So you were the first to start as a freshman, Yes,
- 32:24Speaker 7: So tell me a little more about what that was
- 32:27Speaker 7: like for you.
- 32:29Speaker 6: Oh, it was the same thing, you know. I thank
- 32:31Speaker 6: God for my parents and my grand grandparents and my
- 32:34Speaker 6: ninety year old grandmother who taught me most of everything.
- 32:37Speaker 5: I know.
- 32:37Speaker 6: You know, I lived my entire life. I've gone from
- 32:40Speaker 6: here all over the world. But I've always carried her
- 32:43Speaker 6: too lish with me. It's a woman that had a
- 32:45Speaker 6: third grade education, but she at least never was spoked.
- 32:49Speaker 6: I've never seen her want for nothing, and she was
- 32:51Speaker 6: always the stability in our life and our family's life.
- 32:54Speaker 6: So when I got out, I've always accepted the challenge
- 32:57Speaker 6: of when they say you can't, that you say you can,
- 33:00Speaker 6: and we've always had things to prove prove. The only
- 33:03Speaker 6: reason I played quarterback was they told me that I couldn't,
- 33:06Speaker 6: that we weren't small enough to play. Matter of fact,
- 33:08Speaker 6: the only reason I went to the University of Houston
- 33:10Speaker 6: is because they back when I came out, there were
- 33:13Speaker 6: no black quarterbacks. And y'all just don't know how hard
- 33:15Speaker 6: it is to see all these black quarterbacks now making
- 33:18Speaker 6: all this money. Back in my day, you couldn't play quarterback.
- 33:23Speaker 6: There were certain positions that they held for certain people,
- 33:28Speaker 6: and you couldn't play quarterback because you couldn't think. You
- 33:30Speaker 6: couldn't play safety because that was a thinking position. So
- 33:33Speaker 6: as a freshman, they moved me to running back, and
- 33:35Speaker 6: my mother and father fault for me to play. So
- 33:37Speaker 6: that's why I went to the university. So I was
- 33:39Speaker 6: recruited all over Texas, all over California, all over the
- 33:45Speaker 6: United States, but I went to u ACE because they
- 33:47Speaker 6: allowed Flash to play quarterback. That's when I got in
- 33:50Speaker 6: and played the beer.
- 33:51Speaker 9: Now this was pre Andre Ware. So at that time
- 33:55Speaker 9: when you came out, did y'all run like the wide
- 33:57Speaker 9: open running shoot at that time, because that's pretty innovative.
- 34:00Speaker 4: During that time. Y'all in the veer, the.
- 34:03Speaker 6: Houston vill Okay, got it.
- 34:06Speaker 4: And part of that.
- 34:07Speaker 3: And let me ask this question because I'm gonna make
- 34:10Speaker 3: the case again when you start talking about black quarterback
- 34:13Speaker 3: and you start talking about the veer, those types of things,
- 34:17Speaker 3: that's that's an additional running back, which you're not.
- 34:21Speaker 4: You're not.
- 34:22Speaker 3: There's still not to me, I feel like there's still
- 34:24Speaker 3: not enough trust yet for you to be able to
- 34:26Speaker 3: throw the ball fifteen twenty times in the game, you know,
- 34:31Speaker 3: because they don't they consider you as an as an
- 34:34Speaker 3: asset as running the ball.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Am I correct on that?
- 34:37Speaker 6: Absolutely not, because at the end of the day, that's
- 34:40Speaker 6: that's that's that's that mentality, that old myth, because that's
- 34:44Speaker 6: the end of day. We all played saying like football
- 34:46Speaker 6: because you know when you I said what you was
- 34:47Speaker 6: on Sunday afternoon, Fan, I'm boll Hays, I'm Roger star back.
- 34:51Speaker 6: You can still throw the ball. You're gonna make the
- 34:53Speaker 6: move what hers does. Right now. The quarterbacks going now
- 34:57Speaker 6: they're able to throw the ball on the run. Ain't
- 34:59Speaker 6: no way back when when we came out, they would
- 35:01Speaker 6: even allow you to run and throw the ball. And
- 35:04Speaker 6: that's all the winterback doing right now. And if you
- 35:07Speaker 6: came run around and throw the ball, then you can't
- 35:09Speaker 6: play quarterback. That's a cussing right now. You cannot expect
- 35:14Speaker 6: everything had gotten better on defense, everybody gotten faster and
- 35:17Speaker 6: quick and everybody. They have not increased the field, they
- 35:20Speaker 6: had elongated the film. Everything is the same. So the
- 35:24Speaker 6: only thing that's changing is the personnel, and the personnel
- 35:27Speaker 6: has changed. So you don't have a Roger Stauback no more.
- 35:30Speaker 6: You'll need a Jalen Hurst, but they wouldn't be the
- 35:35Speaker 6: Jalen Hurst. Then I had a depth to doing something
- 35:40Speaker 6: that would keep me playing a game that I love.
- 35:44Speaker 7: I hear you, all right, all right?
- 35:45Speaker 8: So I have another question for Vincey. So hey, Vincey,
- 35:48Speaker 8: this is for you. So you were quite the menace
- 35:50Speaker 8: when you played at Indiana State University. Some of your.
- 35:54Speaker 7: Accolades I looked up today.
- 35:56Speaker 8: You're a two time All Conference safety, you were nineteen
- 36:00Speaker 8: eighty five Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, and
- 36:03Speaker 8: you still hold the ISU record for career interceptions at seventeen.
- 36:07Speaker 7: Is that correct?
- 36:09Speaker 5: Yes?
- 36:09Speaker 6: And like Max say, I did that in two and
- 36:11Speaker 6: a half years. I knew it.
- 36:16Speaker 7: You guys are so extremely talented bunch of guys. I'm
- 36:20Speaker 7: telling you what I got on it was over. So
- 36:27Speaker 7: my question is, I know Carl alluded to this earlier.
- 36:29Speaker 8: You were selected by the Patriots in the second round
- 36:31Speaker 8: right of the nineteen eighty six NFL draft.
- 36:34Speaker 7: So, so walk us through that was what was that
- 36:36Speaker 7: like for you?
- 36:40Speaker 5: It was I was just happy to be drafted. These
- 36:44Speaker 5: guys know back then, man, you just you just have
- 36:46Speaker 5: to They won't they won't be even the center of
- 36:49Speaker 5: the kind of training camp because we had training camp
- 36:51Speaker 5: back then. It was one hundred and twenty people could
- 36:54Speaker 5: come to training camp. It was all the little work
- 36:57Speaker 5: or plus you had your twelve rounds in the draft,
- 37:00Speaker 5: being drafted in the second round and coming from a
- 37:03Speaker 5: small school, one double a school, and then the patrin
- 37:06Speaker 5: had just come off the Super Bowl from against the Bears.
- 37:09Speaker 5: I'm like, man, I'm gonna go into a good team.
- 37:12Speaker 5: But they taught me so much. Andre Tippitt, uh Fred
- 37:16Speaker 5: Marion Black mother tippit all the ry Clay boy, they
- 37:21Speaker 5: taught me so much. As how they alluded to as
- 37:25Speaker 5: a rookie, and my locker was next to Stanley Morgan.
- 37:29Speaker 5: Gave me all his pony tennis tersue because he wore
- 37:33Speaker 5: the same size as me, and he hooked me up.
- 37:35Speaker 5: But they told me when I got there, they say, hey, man,
- 37:38Speaker 5: if you want to stay in this legal sometime, keep
- 37:40Speaker 5: your eyes over, your mouth shut, and your backpack. They
- 37:43Speaker 5: said it's a terrible business. They said, it's a terrible business.
- 37:48Speaker 5: And just just how I had got to the league
- 37:52Speaker 5: and all that I was strictly about football, you know,
- 37:56Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying. I had my fun, but
- 37:58Speaker 5: I wanted to seed. And then I got traded right
- 38:02Speaker 5: after the fourth game my roofie year of San Diego.
- 38:04Speaker 5: When I come out here and I don't know anybody,
- 38:07Speaker 5: and it's like starting all over back then, because everybody's
- 38:11Speaker 5: been training camp but now here on the team, and
- 38:14Speaker 5: they telling me they want play soon. I'm loving that part,
- 38:17Speaker 5: but man, I'm trying.
- 38:18Speaker 6: To learn the defense again. That was different because if
- 38:23Speaker 6: you messed up back then, you ain't getting too many
- 38:26Speaker 6: do over.
- 38:27Speaker 5: You was gone.
- 38:28Speaker 6: They cut people after games at halftime on plane. I'm
- 38:35Speaker 6: not being honesty. It was real. It was really. We
- 38:40Speaker 6: wasn't making no money, I'm to be honest. So that
- 38:44Speaker 6: whole experience to getting drafted and and that kind of stuff,
- 38:48Speaker 6: and so these guys I don't notice. But the game
- 38:52Speaker 6: I started the same day ago, five games after I
- 38:54Speaker 6: got here.
- 38:56Speaker 5: I broke my jaw the first game, I said, I
- 39:00Speaker 5: third played the game, my own teammate fall in the
- 39:03Speaker 5: back of my head, my face and I break my jaw.
- 39:06Speaker 5: I go get wired up. At halftime I come back.
- 39:08Speaker 5: I watched the rest of the game that was on Sunday.
- 39:10Speaker 5: That Thursday night I started on ESPN Thursday Night Football
- 39:15Speaker 5: against the Raiders. Would have broke, y'all. They had made
- 39:17Speaker 5: me a special face mask and everything, because I didn't
- 39:21Speaker 5: want to come off the field. So I played the
- 39:22Speaker 5: next eight games with my mouth ware shut. Broke, y'all.
- 39:26Speaker 5: You couldn't do that these days. That's how bad I
- 39:29Speaker 5: wanted it. That's how bad I didn't want to come
- 39:31Speaker 5: off that field. Because once some off, it ain't no
- 39:34Speaker 5: guarantees you're gonna ever come back on. But you have
- 39:36Speaker 5: to go lucky and have a long career or even
- 39:39Speaker 5: be out there a few years. Just because of the
- 39:42Speaker 5: injury aspects of it. It was great and it was
- 39:46Speaker 5: it was very fulfilling to that.
- 39:47Speaker 3: To that point, Scott, did you what did you play
- 39:51Speaker 3: any games that you had something that was somewhat considered
- 39:55Speaker 3: a major injury but you still playing?
- 39:57Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 39:59Speaker 6: When you got you you were gone. At last year
- 40:01Speaker 6: when Vincent and I were there with Ap and them,
- 40:03Speaker 6: I played in Green Bay with three broken ribs and
- 40:09Speaker 6: all the left side of the car, left side of
- 40:11Speaker 6: corllege porn In December.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Okay, Matt mac did you did you did you play with?
- 40:20Speaker 3: What tell me the serious injury that you probably played.
- 40:22Speaker 6: With a carl. That's that's very sensitive to me because
- 40:26Speaker 6: that's what ended my career.
- 40:28Speaker 5: They knew.
- 40:31Speaker 6: I left Houston on planing B free agency with a
- 40:35Speaker 6: torn a c L that they never replaced, and they
- 40:38Speaker 6: didn't replace it based on the fact that the strength
- 40:41Speaker 6: and the acquad and the hamstring and the cast, they
- 40:44Speaker 6: didn't feel like they needed major surgery. So I get hurt.
- 40:51Speaker 6: That was in ninety two and it was in Tempa Bay,
- 40:55Speaker 6: were jamming and I hit it. I hold the guy up.
- 41:00Speaker 6: Hear my knee click. They knew it in Minnesota the
- 41:03Speaker 6: last seven eight games out of town for they knew
- 41:05Speaker 6: I had torn my moniscus. They said, don't worry about it,
- 41:07Speaker 6: we'll clean it up at.
- 41:08Speaker 4: The end of the year.
- 41:09Speaker 6: This is nineteen ninety three, and guys, this is exactly
- 41:12Speaker 6: what happened to me when they took my moniscus out
- 41:15Speaker 6: at the end of the year in ninety three. I
- 41:17Speaker 6: came back thinking I'm getting ready to go to work
- 41:19Speaker 6: and go get back. It was just like it was.
- 41:22Speaker 6: It was elastic, My knee was moving back and forward.
- 41:26Speaker 6: And the bikers never told me that if I take
- 41:29Speaker 6: this moniscus out it would end my career, because I
- 41:31Speaker 6: had played that whole year without a meniscus and without
- 41:34Speaker 6: an acl But I played the Hope with no maniskas.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Now I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna make the case
- 41:41Speaker 3: that you know, Zambi, I'm gonna leave it.
- 41:45Speaker 4: I'll leave the name right there.
- 41:49Speaker 3: He knew that he had to have known that as
- 41:52Speaker 3: the trainer, right, Yes, it should have been that should
- 41:56Speaker 3: have been so. And again one of the things publicly,
- 41:59Speaker 3: if I can dare say this, when you go to
- 42:03Speaker 3: the trainer back in those days, his job wasn't necessarily
- 42:07Speaker 3: to get you well, but to get you back on
- 42:10Speaker 3: the field.
- 42:11Speaker 4: And yeah, that's a whole different thing.
- 42:15Speaker 6: You know.
- 42:17Speaker 4: I played with I played with pins. I played with
- 42:22Speaker 4: pins in my wrist. And and they say to me.
- 42:28Speaker 3: That as long as you don't try to catch yourself,
- 42:33Speaker 3: if you and you try to catch yourself, you're gonna break.
- 42:37Speaker 4: The fore arm.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Wow, okay, now yeah, And and and when you say
- 42:43Speaker 3: that to me that way, I'm like, oh, okay, Like.
- 42:46Speaker 7: I can think how you play football?
- 42:49Speaker 3: Like I'm trying to figure out like how do I
- 42:50Speaker 3: how am I supposed to control that opportunity or situation
- 42:54Speaker 3: that I'm I'm not gonna catch my side if I'm falling.
- 42:57Speaker 4: But I remember that that's the that situation.
- 43:00Speaker 3: I mean when you start talking about playing hurt, I
- 43:05Speaker 3: bet you during that time, that was just a standard.
- 43:09Speaker 3: That was that was And and let's remember I first
- 43:12Speaker 3: I got my job because John Swain didn't want to
- 43:15Speaker 3: take a shot.
- 43:17Speaker 4: Yeah, and he had he had an ankle.
- 43:19Speaker 3: You guys probably weren't there at that point, but it
- 43:21Speaker 3: was my first, my first opportunity to play. The third season,
- 43:28Speaker 3: Swain was hurt his ankle, and so when it's time
- 43:32Speaker 3: for him to come back, he's like, you know, Zambi
- 43:36Speaker 3: saying like, hey, you know we can shoot it up.
- 43:38Speaker 4: You can go wow. And he was like, nah, I'm good.
- 43:41Speaker 3: And then I go in and it's playing against Detroit.
- 43:44Speaker 3: I get the game winning an interception and then the
- 43:46Speaker 3: rest is history and he was gone. So and do
- 43:50Speaker 3: you think I was gonna ever get have an injury
- 43:53Speaker 3: keep me out of the game. Absolutely not, because I
- 43:55Speaker 3: could see, you know, I saw what happened and and
- 43:59Speaker 3: that and again in I don't know where that is now,
- 44:01Speaker 3: because I think the players somewhat make that decision, you know,
- 44:04Speaker 3: whether or not they play probably too much money.
- 44:09Speaker 5: Game and say, hey, coach, I ain't feeling today. Man,
- 44:12Speaker 5: I ain't playing, and you ain't ain't gonna might be
- 44:15Speaker 5: mad at you. You can't make some dudes play no
- 44:19Speaker 5: more more? Brother, don't play that much? But games a year?
- 44:22Speaker 6: What? What?
- 44:23Speaker 4: Head coach? What head coach? A?
- 44:25Speaker 6: Yeah? See see y'all. Remember the time I got that
- 44:31Speaker 6: grade three hematoma and that big old lump came on
- 44:36Speaker 6: because you know, we didn't wear a hip pad right
- 44:38Speaker 6: sought we were cute, yeah, you know, because it was
- 44:40Speaker 6: so limited. And I got that hip hip him and
- 44:43Speaker 6: and at halftime I go in there and all and
- 44:46Speaker 6: it's falling up. Man, it's a big old not like
- 44:48Speaker 6: a bash side of my you know what, Let's get
- 44:53Speaker 6: the niggle and let's draw this on out and get it.
- 44:59Speaker 6: Ain't nothing, but I got enough on Hey, I told
- 45:03Speaker 6: him up myself.
- 45:05Speaker 4: I remember that.
- 45:06Speaker 6: I remember that he did was if you can't hurt it,
- 45:10Speaker 6: no more, wrap it up unless.
- 45:14Speaker 4: My gosh.
- 45:15Speaker 3: I mean, and I don't think the actual like Hollis.
- 45:18Speaker 3: I don't think like the public really knows. Like these
- 45:22Speaker 3: types of stories, you when you're looking at a game,
- 45:25Speaker 3: you have no idea of what the player is dealing with,
- 45:29Speaker 3: and not just physically, and but if it's physical, that's
- 45:33Speaker 3: got to be a mental piece to it too, because like, man,
- 45:35Speaker 3: you kind of afraid to fall.
- 45:36Speaker 4: I'm thinking, I can't fall. I can't catch myself, you know.
- 45:40Speaker 4: So what I mean, Yes, I don't.
- 45:43Speaker 5: I don't playing a rupt y'all.
- 45:45Speaker 6: But I just text.
- 45:49Speaker 5: I said, love you, just thinking about it. He texted
- 45:51Speaker 5: me back, and he goes, and I'm gonna read to y'all,
- 45:54Speaker 5: even though it's personal. I'm gonna read to y'all.
- 45:56Speaker 4: What text me?
- 45:58Speaker 5: Well, Vincy Glenn, I was talking about you the other day.
- 46:01Speaker 5: I was playing golf with Toy Cook on Thursday, and
- 46:04Speaker 5: he asked me about something of the best DB's back
- 46:06Speaker 5: in the day. I told him you were one of
- 46:09Speaker 5: my best I ever coached anyway out anyway. Once I
- 46:12Speaker 5: got you to line up at fourteen yards not ten,
- 46:15Speaker 5: you were all right fall hope ball as well as you.
- 46:22Speaker 5: Just know that You're always in my thoughts, in my heart.
- 46:24Speaker 5: I love you, man.
- 46:25Speaker 4: What I get, what I get out of that is uncoachable.
- 46:28Speaker 4: That's what he's says.
- 46:35Speaker 5: Hey, miss, this is this is what he told me
- 46:38Speaker 5: when I first because in San Diego we pay a
- 46:40Speaker 5: lot of man, so I would line up at ten,
- 46:42Speaker 5: but I had rains and I could get up where
- 46:44Speaker 5: I need to get. But when I got to.
- 46:48Speaker 6: Saw Wednesday, he kept telling me back up, man, back up,
- 46:52Speaker 6: put some money in the man.
- 46:53Speaker 5: From yeah, Man, he called me to the back because
- 46:57Speaker 5: he always took someone in the dvs. In practice. We
- 46:59Speaker 5: were Maato. We got here, well, you.
- 47:03Speaker 6: Call me to the back.
- 47:04Speaker 5: He said, hey, two five, two five, come here. I
- 47:07Speaker 5: went back there and he said, man, I've been doing
- 47:10Speaker 5: this a long time. Man, more players make coaches than
- 47:13Speaker 5: coaches may put there, man, put some money in the bank. Man.
- 47:17Speaker 5: Just ain't San Diego a lot of time.
- 47:22Speaker 6: More than nine yet eight yards? You might well play
- 47:25Speaker 6: live back, be lined up at fifteen deep and rings a.
- 47:30Speaker 5: Lot up a twitted. But I started it because I'd
- 47:32Speaker 5: be lined up at fifteen. I'm coming downhill. I'm coming
- 47:36Speaker 5: down here, and it's just funny thing in the world.
- 47:39Speaker 4: Hollis has got a question.
- 47:40Speaker 9: I know, I know we're about to close out, but
- 47:42Speaker 9: just if you could just kind of go around the horn.
- 47:44Speaker 9: Just what are you guys up to nowadays and how
- 47:47Speaker 9: can the people get it get in contact with you
- 47:49Speaker 9: and see what you got going on.
- 47:53Speaker 5: Well, I don't do social media, but I do. I
- 47:57Speaker 5: do a Bikings free game show before the bike game
- 48:01Speaker 5: for the fast few years on the fan out of
- 48:04Speaker 5: the Loot the Loute, So I do that. Other than that, man,
- 48:10Speaker 5: if you got my number, hit me up. If you
- 48:12Speaker 5: don't call somebody and know me and get a message.
- 48:20Speaker 6: I like that.
- 48:21Speaker 5: But I'm accessible like everybody in the world. I'm accessible.
- 48:25Speaker 5: I got a phone. If you got a phone on
- 48:26Speaker 5: you accessible, that's true.
- 48:30Speaker 4: All right, yeah everybody?
- 48:32Speaker 6: But yeah, oh man, I want a real estate investment
- 48:36Speaker 6: company here in Houston and Galliston, probably one hundred and
- 48:43Speaker 6: forty units. Still still married for thirty years and just
- 48:47Speaker 6: enjoying my life. People can reach me a great Scott
- 48:51Speaker 6: Enterprises dot Diz nice there you go. Okay, I'm like that.
- 48:58Speaker 4: I don't do.
- 48:59Speaker 6: You know, we're quiet. Were from old school.
- 49:01Speaker 4: We don't do.
- 49:01Speaker 6: But but at the end of the day, I'm still
- 49:05Speaker 6: you know, I've been married forty years, I got two kids.
- 49:08Speaker 6: I lost one two years ago. But at the end
- 49:10Speaker 6: of the day. All I asked her, I've fulfilled every
- 49:13Speaker 6: dream aspiration I possibly can. All I want to do
- 49:16Speaker 6: is be a vessel for others to use the mentality
- 49:19Speaker 6: or the knowledge that I've occurred over the last sixty
- 49:23Speaker 6: two years about to be sixty three at the end
- 49:25Speaker 6: of the day. I want to be a mentor to others.
- 49:29Speaker 6: One of the biggest disappointments I've had is that I
- 49:31Speaker 6: hadn't been able to share this knowledge about that bump
- 49:34Speaker 6: and run technique call because you know me and you
- 49:41Speaker 6: I'm still fighting with Jason Phillipson the Colorado Bulldogs because
- 49:45Speaker 6: he coached out there with d on them about how
- 49:46Speaker 6: to play bump and run. Man, I'll tell you I
- 49:49Speaker 6: had all them coaches, Willie Shaw, I had uh Saving,
- 49:55Speaker 6: Then we had what's his name coach for Denver. I
- 50:01Speaker 6: had all the best coaches in the world, and I'm
- 50:02Speaker 6: gonna tell youy aall something. They all taught the same
- 50:05Speaker 6: Carol Pete, Carroll Say, Rickard Shaw. Then we had Houston
- 50:15Speaker 6: Orleans coach Kenny Houston. Everybody taught me the same thing
- 50:19Speaker 6: about how to play DV. And I'm so grateful and
- 50:22Speaker 6: I thank God for an opportunity to be able to
- 50:24Speaker 6: come to Houston, I mean play in the Houston and
- 50:26Speaker 6: then come to Minnesota and play with such fine guys.
- 50:29Speaker 6: Because when Pete Carroll asked me to come on playing
- 50:32Speaker 6: V free Agency, he had a purpose and he gave
- 50:34Speaker 6: me a shot. Glennville was never going to give me
- 50:36Speaker 6: a shot other than Specialties, and I thank God for
- 50:38Speaker 6: that shot. But one thing I missed doing Carl is
- 50:41Speaker 6: not being able to pass that on and to take
- 50:43Speaker 6: this to my grave at bump and run technique. It
- 50:46Speaker 6: saddens me because a lot of these kids don't know
- 50:49Speaker 6: how to play d D. They put them in bad
- 50:52Speaker 6: situations and they get hurt and they blame the player.
- 50:55Speaker 6: But then they playing this coach, and you and I
- 50:58Speaker 6: both know that you can line up wrong, convinced it
- 51:00Speaker 6: and get beat. So those are the things that Barns
- 51:04Speaker 6: couldn't fash the game. That's why I don't even watch
- 51:06Speaker 6: it anymore.
- 51:07Speaker 3: I'm with you, man, Lisa has one more question, and Mac,
- 51:11Speaker 3: I'm gonna talk to you about that.
- 51:13Speaker 4: Okay, I'm gonna talk to you about that person.
- 51:15Speaker 7: It's more of like a description.
- 51:17Speaker 8: I just wanted you guys, in one word, to describe
- 51:20Speaker 8: something about Carl Lee that that you admired when you
- 51:25Speaker 8: played with him on the Vikings roster.
- 51:29Speaker 7: One word, But we got a lot limiting you to
- 51:33Speaker 7: one word. Guy, I know this is really hard.
- 51:35Speaker 10: This is hard for you, guys, Lisa, I'll go further. Okay,
- 51:42Speaker 10: I'll say complete. And when I say, he heard me
- 51:45Speaker 10: say this before. I've known a lot of corners who
- 51:48Speaker 10: can play press man or man the man coverage well,
- 51:52Speaker 10: and a lot of guys who could play.
- 51:53Speaker 6: Zone well to well. Well, there are very there were
- 51:57Speaker 6: very few guys that was excellent and could do it
- 52:00Speaker 6: as seamlessly as Sea Lee did it on both ends
- 52:02Speaker 6: of the spectrum. So in my in my view, and
- 52:04Speaker 6: I've said this publicly many times on a lot of
- 52:06Speaker 6: different platform platforms, he's one of the most complete defensive
- 52:11Speaker 6: backs that I've ever that I've ever seen. Also, my
- 52:13Speaker 6: other world would be best dressed.
- 52:18Speaker 7: We're making a compound word.
- 52:22Speaker 6: I like it, don't you think? Don't you think that's
- 52:26Speaker 6: a little much, Vincy?
- 52:28Speaker 5: Yeah, that was way too much, man?
- 52:33Speaker 4: Can you can you move on? We run it out
- 52:35Speaker 4: of time.
