- 0:12Hello friends. It is Sean here it is Holiday
- 0:15Sean here. I am having a week off so I
- 0:19don't have to go to work. I just get to sit around all day
- 0:21and read the Bible for you and for me and for anyone who's
- 0:25interested in listening. That's not quite how it works,
- 0:27but I hope you are doing well and that Monday artist isn't too
- 0:31bad for you because it's pretty great from where I am.
- 0:36This week is a good week. We are going to continue reading
- 0:39through the week in the book of Acts and that's going to be
- 0:42great before we of course finish off with the Psalm on Friday.
- 0:46And this is the part where we really are going to be hearing
- 0:50about the mission outreach of this new church as it really
- 0:54starts to spread and then start to grapple with big questions of
- 0:58what does church look like if this is going to be a really
- 1:01large expanding group that centralized control is kind of
- 1:06losing their grasp on. So grappling with these big
- 1:10questions of church and just seeing the Holy Spirit doing
- 1:14incredible things. So why don't you come with me,
- 1:17folks, back all those millennia back to see what Paul and
- 1:22Barnabas and Co are doing. As we read together in Acts
- 1:27chapter 14, the same thing happened in Iconium.
- 1:41Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached
- 1:45with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks
- 1:49became believers. Some of the Jews, however,
- 1:53spurned God's message and poisoned the minds of the
- 1:56Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas.
- 1:59But the apostles stayed there a long time, preaching boldly
- 2:03about the grace of the Lord. And the Lord proved their
- 2:07message was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and
- 2:11wonders. But the people of the town were
- 2:13divided in their opinion about them.
- 2:15Some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles.
- 2:19Then a mob of Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders,
- 2:24decided to attack and stone them.
- 2:28When the apostles learned of it, they fled to the region of
- 2:31Lycaonia, to the towns of Lystra and Derby and the surrounding
- 2:35area, and there they preached the good news.
- 2:40While they were in Lystra, Paul and Barnabas came upon a man
- 2:44with crippled feet. He had been that way from birth,
- 2:48so he had never walked. He was sitting and listening.
- 2:52As Paul preached, looking straight at him, Paul realized
- 2:56he had faith to be healed. So Paul called to him in a loud
- 3:00voice, stand up, and the man jumped to his feet and started
- 3:05walking. When the crowd saw what Paul had
- 3:08done, they shouted. In their local dialect, these
- 3:11men are gods in human form. They decided that Barnabas was
- 3:16the Greek God Zeus and that Paul was Hermes since he was the
- 3:20chief speaker. Now the temple of Zeus was
- 3:23located just outside the town. So the priest of the temple and
- 3:27the crowd brought bulls and wreaths of flowers to the town
- 3:30gates, and they prepared to offer sacrifices to the
- 3:33apostles. But when the apostles Barnabas
- 3:36and Paul heard what was happening, they tore their
- 3:39clothing in dismay and ran out among the people shouting,
- 3:43Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings, just
- 3:47like you. We have come to bring you the
- 3:50good news that you should turn from these worthless things and
- 3:54turn to the living God who made heaven and earth, the sea and
- 3:58everything in it. In the past He permitted all the
- 4:02nations to go their own ways, but He never left them without
- 4:06evidence of himself and His goodness.
- 4:09For instance, he sends you rain and good crops, and gives you
- 4:13food and joyful hearts. But even with these words, Paul
- 4:17and Barnabas could scarcely restrain the people from
- 4:20sacrificing to them. Then some Jews arrived from
- 4:24Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side.
- 4:27They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was
- 4:31dead. But as the believers gathered
- 4:33around him, he got up and went back into the town.
- 4:38The next day he left with Barnabas for Derby.
- 4:43After preaching the good news in Derby and making many disciples,
- 4:47Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch of
- 4:51Persidia, where they strengthen the believers.
- 4:55They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them
- 4:59that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom
- 5:02of God. Paul and Barnabas also have
- 5:04appointed elders in every church with prayer and fasting.
- 5:09They turn the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they
- 5:12had put their trust. Then they traveled back through
- 5:16Passidia to Pamphilia. They preached the word and
- 5:20perjure, then went down to Italia.
- 5:24Finally they returned by ship to Antioch of Syria, where their
- 5:27journey had begun. The believers there had
- 5:30entrusted them to the grace of God to do the work they had now
- 5:34completed. Upon arriving in Antioch, they
- 5:37called the church together and reported everything God had done
- 5:41through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the
- 5:44Gentiles too. And they stayed there with the
- 5:48believers for a long time. Jesus, the truth about you
- 6:03demand such massive change in our life.
- 6:07We can't continue living the way we always did when all of a
- 6:11sudden we realized that you are the prize.
- 6:15You are The great goal of our life.
- 6:19And so confronting was that for these folks, back when the early
- 6:23church was beginning, that they just didn't know how to respond.
- 6:27I pray that the power and the influence of your message
- 6:32continues to burn in us today so brightly that we can't just put
- 6:39you on a shelf, Lord quietly tuck you under the sheets and
- 6:42leave you there through the day. But that you in our hearts would
- 6:47just burn, shaping the way that we make every decision, sharing
- 6:53your love and telling of your presence and forgiveness to all
- 6:57those we come in contact with. Use us mightily in your Kingdom.
- 7:04We pray this in your name, Jesus.
- 7:06Amen.
