- 0:00What if love could become second nature to all of us in all of
- 0:08our relationships,
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: the ones that are easy and the ones that are in difficulty?
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: What if our hands moved before our egos set in?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: What if service felt as natural as breathing?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: as natural as living.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: There are four scriptures that we're looking at here this morning.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: James asks a blunt question.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: What good is faith without works, without putting our faith into action?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: His belief, real faith moves, real love shows up.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: in James 2, verses 14 through 17.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Jesus paints a picture for us.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I was hungry,
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I was a stranger,
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I was sick,
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: and whatever you did for one of the least of these,
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: you did it for me.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Matthew 25, 31 through 46.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Acts gives us structure for love.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The church appoints servants to care for the widows.
- 1:29Word and table,
- 1:32prayer and food held together in Acts chapter 6,
- 1:391 through 7.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: And then James circles back on all of that.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Are any suffering, are any sick among you
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Show up with oil in person.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Compassion and intercession, walking hand in hand in James 5, 13-18.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So here is our big idea for today.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Faith becomes visible when care becomes habitual.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Serving is how our church becomes relevant and vital in our world today.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I drew from a line in the Let Our Joys Be Known book, chapter 12.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: It says this,
- 2:34Matthew 25 praises those who serve so automatically that they
- 2:41aren't even aware
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: that they are doing it.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And friends, that is the goal, holy muscle memory.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Let me name our Pleasant Valley story.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: I know I haven't been here but about 14 years.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I was told by the life, 14 months, sorry.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: I guess it seems longer than it actually was.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: But I was told by the life development team,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Brian Wilson in particular,
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: that I don't get to use the I'm new card anymore.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But I have actually been here,
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: or at least been familiar with the congregation for many,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: many years.
- 3:29My wife served,
- 3:31I don't know,
- 3:3120,
- 3:3225 years ago as the youth pastor,
- 3:35actually.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And I was part of the youth group and doing some things.
- 3:39So I'm fascinated by the Pleasant Valley story and everything
- 3:45that we have done as
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: a congregation.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And I believe that we have been living these ways for many years.
- 3:52many years it is it is who we are and i believe it is who we
- 3:58plan on continuing to
- 4:00be we tend the mission field um it's over there right it's a
- 4:09soybean field so i'm
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: not great with directions
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: It's somewhere around the church here nearby behind the cemetery.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And the proceeds for that go out the door.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: They are given away every year.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: It's something that I believe started when my wife was here.
- 4:31We plant soybeans,
- 4:32we harvest them,
- 4:34and then we share the proceeds from that.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: We run the Karis Consignment Shop.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Many of you are part of that and have been for a long time.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: It's a simple shop, but it's a steady witness in our community.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Goods are recirculated and neighbors are cared for.
- 4:54Did you know that that ministry gives upwards of $100,000 away
- 4:58every year?
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Did you know that?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: We host the Jimmy Fortune concert coming up on December 10th and 11th,
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: 2025 at the Community Center.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I think we raise, I don't know, $10,000, $15,000 a year.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And the proceeds of that go to the Verona Community Food Pantry,
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: which many of you also volunteer at on the fourth Tuesday of every month,
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: which is why we can't have puppet practice on the fourth Tuesday anymore,
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I was told.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So we're going to have to pick another day.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: for the puppet ministry.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Backpack pals.
- 5:42Downstairs there's a big room with a whole bunch of food and a
- 5:46lot of backpacks.
- 5:47And those backpacks are packed every single week under our roof
- 5:53right next to the
- 5:54preschool where we have wonderful children that are being
- 5:58ministered to and cared
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: for down there.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: It is mixed with mercy.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And 60 kids a week
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: go home with food in their backpacks because of that ministry.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Dignity is sent home in backpacks every week.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: We send teams after tragedy, and it hits homes.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Brethren disaster trips, we all know about that.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Faith X Journeys.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Brethren, voluntary service moments.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: We go where the hurt is and we stay long enough to help.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Years, in fact.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: And let me not forget our deacons.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Quiet saints.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Steady hands.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Faithful presence.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: You know, cute little faces too.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: They carry towels more than titles.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: They anoint and they care in places that we never know about or see.
- 7:14We are the church of the brethren,
- 7:17and service and care is our lane in the world.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: God's word made deed.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Our prayers turned into practices that impact people's lives.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Peace made tangible through kitchens and work gloves.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: a family story that has roots in the Church of the Brethren story,
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: one that I have a personal affinity to.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Many of you know about the Heifer Project.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: How many of you have ever heard about the
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: have for a project?
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: for those of you that don't,
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: and maybe those of you that do,
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: its seed was planted by a guy named Dan West.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: He was a brethren farmer in 1937, 1944, that kind of era.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: And he came home from refugee relief with this simple idea.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Don't just send milk, send a cow.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Give families a living, not a ration.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: A guy named M.R.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Ziegler,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Michael Robert Ziegler,
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: who was actually,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: in fact,
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: my great uncle,
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: helped it take flight.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: He was the first executive of Brethren Service Committee, okay?
- 8:51And he championed this idea and connected this vision all
- 8:55across the world.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: He became a key architect and a promoter of this work.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Heifer grew ecumenically, and later it became Heifer International.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: But its heartbeat remains the same.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: dignity, sustainability, and hope for people.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: A brethren vision that keeps feeding the world day after day after day.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Our denomination still lives this way.
- 9:33So let me just real quick go through a few service partners
- 9:38that I haven't already mentioned.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Brethren Disaster Ministries,
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: volunteers,
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: rebuilding homes for survivors,
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: hands that help,
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: long-term presence.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Children's Disaster Service, a number of you are part of this.
- 9:54These are trained teams that create safe,
- 9:57playful spaces for kids after disasters.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: They tend to little hearts while the grown-ups face big losses.
- 10:08Brethren Voluntary Service,
- 10:10how many of you all have gone to Brethren Voluntary Service?
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Oh my, we need to fix that.
- 10:18This is year-long placements,
- 10:20a wonderful thing for youth and young adults to be involved in.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: They are out there serving for peace,
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: serving for justice,
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: serving for human need all across the U.S.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: and abroad.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: There's a thing called Global Food Initiative,
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: where partners grow food security through sustainable agriculture.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: All of our farmers should be involved in this.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And there are grants and there are projects from Africa to the Americas.
- 10:50material resources at the brethren service center there are
- 10:54warehouses full of
- 10:56teams that are packing and shipping relief all across the globe
- 11:01behind the scenes
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: logistics that are saving lives
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Serve International.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: It's a brethren-born fair trade initiative.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: It was actually,
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: from what I understand,
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: one of the very first fair trade initiatives that was happening,
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: where they create justice through work.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: It was begun in 1949, before it was even a thing.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: owner of peace,
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: equipping peacemakers and non-violence training for teams,
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: forming people for the work of reconciliation,
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: the ministry of reconciliation that we are called to in Jesus Christ.
- 11:46And of course,
- 11:47faith acts,
- 11:48short-term service trips that meet real needs and stretch
- 11:54disciples.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: All of this is Matthew 25 with sleeves rolled up.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: It's not noise.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: It is nurture.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: It is not slogans or scriptures.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: It is service and salvation for people.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: So, for us, what keeps service flowing among us as a congregation?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Well, first off, we just have to see what is going on.
- 12:34We need to ask the question,
- 12:35what is Jesus,
- 12:37where is Jesus hiding in plain sight for us to see?
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Often, Jesus looks like a neighbor that we have overlooked.
- 12:49We need to step up to interrupt your schedule for someone
- 12:55else's survival.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And understand, small steps can turn into holy habits.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: And lastly, stay.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: This is something that the brethren,
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: have done very,
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: very well over the years in many,
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: many ways.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Stay.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Stay.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Care that lasts heals deeper than just a moment of ministry.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: And we need to remember that when we stay and when we get tired,
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: the net doesn't break as long as grace holds it.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: So remember our quote today.
- 13:38Matthew 25 praises those who serve so automatically that they
- 13:45aren't even aware of
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: They are doing it.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: A lot of the things that I mentioned today,
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: you are probably not even aware that we were doing it,
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: and the Church of the Brethren is just continuing in that lane.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: So let's join in.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Let's practice until mercy is second nature among us.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: This is our path forward.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Keep tending the mission field.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Keep stocking backpacks and pantries.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Keep sending teams and forming servants.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Keep singing and serving at concerts for good.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Keep raising children.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: in a church that gives itself away.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: And keep telling the service stories.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: It is our family story of practical compassion in the world.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: It is a picture of faith with hammers, hooves, and hope.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Amen.
