- 0:28Virgin Mary.
- 0:28This is near and dear to my heart.
- 0:32I'm very nervous because I'm like a doting
- 0:34son here who's going to try and speak
- 0:38about something that is so vast, so deep,
- 0:41and so precious to me that I don't
- 0:43want to not do it justice.
- 0:46So stick with me here.

- 0:57I appreciate any feedback we can get to
- 1:01take the conversation in a direction that is
- 1:03most beneficial.
- 1:04Our true algorithm is the Holy Spirit, and
- 1:07let's begin by renewing our total consecration to
- 1:10Jesus through Mary that we may do everything
- 1:13in, with, through, and for Mary as her
- 1:16instrument so that she may lead us to
- 1:18more perfectly do everything with, in, through, and
- 1:21for Jesus.
- 1:23I, Marco Sandoval, a repentant sinner, renew and
- 1:27ratify today in your hands, O Immaculate Mother,
- 1:31the vows of my baptism.
- 1:33I renounce Satan and resolve to follow Jesus
- 1:36Christ even more closely than before.
- 1:39Mary, I give you my heart.
- 1:41Please set it on fire with love for
- 1:44Jesus.
- 1:45Make it always attentive to his burning thirst
- 1:47for love and for souls.
- 1:49Keep my heart in your most pure heart
- 1:52that I may love Jesus and the members
- 1:54of his body with your own perfect love.
- 1:58Mary, I entrust myself totally to you, my
- 2:01body and soul, my goods, both interior and
- 2:04exterior, and even the value of all my
- 2:07good actions.
- 2:08Please make of me, of all that I
- 2:10am and have, whatever most pleases you.
- 2:14Let me be a fit instrument in your
- 2:16immaculate and merciful hands for bringing the greatest
- 2:19possible glory to God.
- 2:21If I fall, please lead me back to
- 2:23Jesus.
- 2:25Wash me in the blood and water that
- 2:27flow from his pure side and help me
- 2:29never to lose my trust in this fountain
- 2:31of love and mercy.
- 2:33With you, O Immaculate Mother, you who always
- 2:36do the will of God, I unite myself
- 2:39to the perfect consecration of Jesus as he
- 2:42offers himself in the Spirit to the Father
- 2:45for the life of the world.
- 2:47Amen.
- 2:48All right, so today we'll be talking about
- 2:49the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- 2:52It struck me today is the feast day
- 2:55of St. Augustine.
- 2:57St. Augustine is near and dear to my
- 2:59heart and to my conversion of heart.
- 3:02I think the Confessions of St. Augustine was
- 3:04maybe the third deep spiritual book that I
- 3:07read.
- 3:08It just really touched me with the things
- 3:10that I was struggling with in my life.
- 3:13St. Augustine had the same struggles.
- 3:16Today I was looking at it and thinking
- 3:17about it in terms of this conversation, and
- 3:20there's an iconic image of St. Augustine where
- 3:23it has a veritas, which is truth in
- 3:27Latin, and then it's kind of shining light
- 3:30onto his mind, his head, and it's going
- 3:35through his head, and he's holding his heart
- 3:37on the opposite side, and his heart's inflamed,
- 3:40so it's kind of showing that the truth
- 3:42is passing through his mind and inflaming his
- 3:44heart.
- 3:45And I thought, that's a really cool image.
- 3:49I think often about trying to be an
- 3:55instrument that helps other men set their heart
- 3:57on fire.
- 3:59I think as men we tend to be
- 4:01in our mind a lot.
- 4:04Trying to understand, seeking to understand, knowledge, and
- 4:08I think that gets in the way of
- 4:10setting our heart on fire often, so I
- 4:12think that image is interesting for St. Augustine.
- 4:14It worked, that truth, insatiable appetite for truth
- 4:19affected his mind and set his heart on
- 4:21fire, but I don't know that that's always
- 4:23the case for men.
- 4:25For me, it was Mary.
- 4:28It was my relationship with Mary, my love
- 4:31for Mary, that came through the 33-day
- 4:34consecration primarily.
- 4:36And so with St. Augustine, if you know
- 4:38more about the story, his mother, St. Monica,
- 4:43prayed and prayed and prayed for years for
- 4:46his conversion and the conversion of his father.
- 4:50Just tears of a mother, prayers of a
- 4:53mother, so much so, I think when he
- 4:56finally converted, she was with him, and I'll
- 4:59probably not get the story perfectly, but shortly
- 5:01thereafter she passed away, but she lived to
- 5:04see her son converted.
- 5:06So I was reflecting on that, thinking of
- 5:09those prayers of a mother and the role
- 5:11that that played.
- 5:12It's not present in that image.
- 5:14It's as if truth was the role, but
- 5:16the mother's prayers, working in concert with the
- 5:20truth, to me set his heart on fire.
- 5:23So that's kind of an image of the
- 5:26Blessed Virgin Mary's role in all of our
- 5:28life.
- 5:30As she says in the Magnificat, her soul
- 5:35proclaims God.
- 5:37Her soul magnifies the Lord.
- 5:39So I think often of a magnifying glass.
- 5:44When we were young, we would get a
- 5:46magnifying glass in the sun, and we'd catch
- 5:49grass on fire.
- 5:52Something like that.
- 5:53It magnifies the sun's heat and intensity so
- 5:57much so that it can create fire in
- 5:59the natural world, and that's a lot what
- 6:01I see that image when Mary says her
- 6:03soul proclaims the Lord and magnifies the Lord.
- 6:06I see that.
- 6:07So I thought that was interesting.
- 6:11As I wade into this, as I said
- 6:14earlier, I'm kind of nervous about it.
- 6:16I come at this as a layman.
- 6:20I'm not a theologian.
- 6:22I didn't go to school to learn this.
- 6:24I'm not being paid for this.
- 6:28I'm doing this as an act of stewardship,
- 6:31an act of alms.
- 6:36I'm giving alms for this, so this is
- 6:38my time, talent, and treasure to be able
- 6:40to speak these words.
- 6:42So I think that makes it to where
- 6:43I come from a little bit different place.
- 6:46How does a layman come to these truths
- 6:49in their life?
- 6:50As I mentioned earlier, the 33-day total
- 6:54consecration to Jesus through Mary, I think that's
- 6:57really what opened my heart up to Mary,
- 7:00which engaged my curiosity and imagination for her,
- 7:05and really got me started asking the question,
- 7:07Who is Mary?
- 7:11And seeking after that truth and reality of
- 7:14who she is.
- 7:15I think one thing that's good in contemplating
- 7:20her is her many titles.
- 7:22She has so many titles.
- 7:24I don't have a list of them here,
- 7:27but I would encourage you, you can easily
- 7:29Google the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
- 7:33and it will come up with basically the
- 7:36litany for all her different titles to pray
- 7:38for us.
- 7:39And there are so many titles.
- 7:41Mirror of Justice, Gateway of Heaven, there's just
- 7:48so many.
- 7:49Star of the Sea, that are just so
- 7:51beautiful.
- 7:52So I think going through those titles and
- 7:55kind of just praying over them, pondering over
- 7:58them, there's so much fruit that comes from
- 8:00that.
- 8:01What I'm going to talk about is how
- 8:02I encounter and experience Mary.
- 8:06And for me, my path was Mary in
- 8:10Scripture, Mary in the apparitions, and Mary, just
- 8:15my encounter of Mary.
- 8:18I say all the time, and probably will
- 8:21always say, that devotion to a thing makes
- 8:23your heart grow more tender towards it.
- 8:25That's Father Carney who brought that idea to
- 8:27me.
- 8:28And I can see that so clearly in
- 8:30my relationship with Mary.
- 8:33And this journey to her is that true
- 8:35devotion to Mary through the 33 days made
- 8:40my heart grow more tender and seek after
- 8:42her more.
- 8:43That just coming on the other side of
- 8:45the 33 days, I'm looking for her everywhere.
- 8:49I mean, it was really the apparitions largely.
- 8:52Our Lady of Lords, where she says, I
- 8:55am the Immaculate Conception, that spun St. Maximilian
- 9:04Kolbe's imagination crazy.
- 9:07He wanted to understand what she meant when
- 9:09she said that.
- 9:10And then Our Lady of Fatima is another
- 9:12one for me.
- 9:13That's the one that's really just so vivid.
- 9:16And to where I go and search through
- 9:19those accounts, I want to know every word
- 9:21that she said, what she looked like, how
- 9:23the children described her.
- 9:25There's just so much beauty and imagination for
- 9:29me in those things.
- 9:31The words that are spoken by the Angel
- 9:34of Peace and Mary herself are so packed
- 9:39with fruit.
- 9:40And then I just love the way the
- 9:41children describe what they saw, how she looked,
- 9:44what she was wearing, what it felt like
- 9:48when she opened her hands and the light
- 9:51passed through them.
- 9:52I just love those things.
- 9:54And we'll get into those more in the
- 9:55future.
- 9:56But I figured I would start with the
- 9:58Scripture.
- 10:01This was like the first thing I wanted
- 10:03to do is read the Bible by the
- 10:05time I was 40.
- 10:07And so I started my way through from
- 10:08front to back.
- 10:09And one of the things in retrospect, when
- 10:13I was encountering Mary, I would go back
- 10:17to the Exodus and Leviticus.
- 10:22And I'm an engineer.
- 10:23As an electrical engineer, I'm used to specifying
- 10:27designs.
- 10:29I'm used to trying to put into words
- 10:31what you physically want done, want somebody to
- 10:33build for you.
- 10:34So when I went through those Scriptures of
- 10:38Moses going on the mountain and speaking to
- 10:40God for 40 days and then coming down
- 10:43with his face aglow, and basically he had
- 10:47what God had given him that he wanted
- 10:49to give to the Israelites, that he wanted
- 10:51them to make, all these different artifacts of
- 10:56the temple, the Ark of the Covenant, the
- 10:59Tent of Meeting, all the different things, and
- 11:03how they were to do sacrifices.
- 11:05He laid all that out.
- 11:09It struck me because I've often thought, I
- 11:14get my creative nature from God.
- 11:16All of us are that way.
- 11:17The best parts of us are echoes of
- 11:21God's personality.
- 11:22He's poured his gifts into us.
- 11:25So I know he's a creator.
- 11:27I know he's an engineer and a designer
- 11:29and a builder.
- 11:31All you have to do is look at
- 11:32the world around us to see that, to
- 11:34see his fingerprints, so many different elements of
- 11:39his creation that work similarly.
- 11:41I see that all the time in many
- 11:44different ways.
- 11:46And you can see his fingerprints all over
- 11:48this covenant that Moses brought down from the
- 11:53mountain.
- 11:53So when he's going into the intricacy of
- 11:56how the Ark of the Covenant is to
- 11:58be made, where the gold is supposed to
- 12:00be, what material it's supposed to be made
- 12:03out of, what the rings were going to
- 12:05be like and the dimensions, and it just
- 12:08varied meticulously.
- 12:09So those were chapters that were kind of
- 12:11slow and hard to read at the time.
- 12:13It's just a lot of information.
- 12:16But in hindsight, it gives me, I feel
- 12:19a window into the character of God and
- 12:22how he works.
- 12:23And as I encounter things in my life
- 12:26after that, I look back and remember those
- 12:30readings and think, oh, I see, I know
- 12:34something about God, and I see how he
- 12:37works in these other ways.
- 12:38So then when I apply that to Mary,
- 12:42I think about, okay, that's the Ark of
- 12:44the Covenant.
- 12:46Now God's going to fashion an instrument to
- 12:49bring his Son into the world.
- 12:51He's going to bring God incarnate into the
- 12:53world.
- 12:54And so it just makes perfect sense to
- 12:56me that as immaculately as he laid out
- 13:00the Ark of the Covenant, he is going
- 13:03to so much more immaculately put together Mary
- 13:07in perfection because she's going to be carrying
- 13:11perfection itself in the womb, right, the meeting
- 13:15place of the Holy Spirit in her womb.
- 13:19So Mary is also the perfect witness to
- 13:20the Trinity.
- 13:21I mean, she's the daughter of God.
- 13:24She's the spouse of the Holy Spirit, and
- 13:27she's the mother of Jesus.
- 13:30So, I mean, those are huge things.
- 13:35Her nature and the Holy Spirit came together
- 13:39to conceive from her body, but also from
- 13:47the divinity of the Holy Spirit to conceive
- 13:49Jesus Christ in her womb and to draw
- 13:52his flesh from her.
- 13:53So to me, it has to be immaculate.
- 13:58It's impossible for me to wrap my mind
- 14:00around Jesus being knitted in the womb of
- 14:03a creature that had a fallen nature that
- 14:06was corrupted by sin.
- 14:08That just doesn't make any sense.
- 14:09And you'll know from the Old Testament that
- 14:11most of the time people who came in
- 14:13contact with God or saw God did not
- 14:16survive the encounter.
- 14:18It seems to me that that was always
- 14:20because of the fallen nature and the corrupt
- 14:22nature of man after the fall and God's
- 14:24just perfection.
- 14:26In many cases, your soul would be like
- 14:29a magnet sucked out to God.
- 14:31I mean, that's kind of the way I've
- 14:33always looked at it.
- 14:36So I am the immaculate conception.
- 14:38A lot of times that gets confused with,
- 14:42you know, non-Catholics will think we're talking
- 14:44about Jesus in that term.
- 14:46And Jesus certainly is immaculate, but that echo
- 14:51is back to Mary because she is the
- 14:54immaculate container that's going to carry, but it's
- 14:58even more than carry.
- 15:00Jesus's flesh and blood are going to be
- 15:02drawn from.
- 15:03His divinity is going to come from the
- 15:05Holy Spirit, but his manifested flesh is going
- 15:10to come from Mary and there can be
- 15:13no corruption in that process.
- 15:15So that's just kind of how I come
- 15:19around to that.
- 15:20That's my experience of reading the Bible and
- 15:22then thinking about Mary walking through the 33
- 15:25days and as a layman wrapping my mind
- 15:30around the immaculate conception.
- 15:33You know, I would go on to say,
- 15:36you know, let's see here.
- 15:40I like how it says God said to
- 15:42Moses.
- 15:42All those chapters where they're building and they're
- 15:47doing the sacrifices, they're understanding what it means
- 15:50to worship God rightly, the covenant.
- 15:53He says, you know, most of those chapters
- 15:55are started in God said and God told
- 15:58Moses and God told Moses and Aaron.
- 16:00So every single thing was passed from God
- 16:05as a gift to man, Moses and Aaron.
- 16:08I just think that's fascinating.
- 16:11Oftentimes man tries to put his hands on
- 16:14things and make them his own, but everything's
- 16:18a gift from God.
- 16:19Even in the way he wants to be
- 16:21worshipped, man didn't come up with that.
- 16:23God told us exactly how he wanted to
- 16:25be worshipped.
- 16:26So I always see that as a merciful
- 16:29thing.
- 16:30In God's mercy, he wants us to be
- 16:33involved in his creation, in his salvation.
- 16:37He involves us because he loves us, and
- 16:40I think that's a great, beautiful thing.
- 16:43So when we come, when we walk through,
- 16:46I'm going to, I like to begin with
- 16:49the end in mind.
- 16:50That's kind of a well-known way of
- 16:53looking at things.
- 16:55Jesus says he's the Alpha and the Omega.
- 16:58So I'm going to start in Genesis, and
- 17:01we're going to start Genesis 3.
- 17:04These are going to be the scriptures to
- 17:06me that shed light on who Mary is.
- 17:11So from Genesis 3, the Lord God then
- 17:15asked the woman, What is this you have
- 17:17done?
- 17:19The woman answered, The snake tricked me, so
- 17:22I ate it.
- 17:23Then the Lord God said to the snake,
- 17:26Because you have done this, cursed are you.
- 17:28Among all the animals, tame or wild, on
- 17:32your belly you shall crawl, and dust you
- 17:34shall eat all the days of your life.
- 17:37I will put enmity between you and the
- 17:40woman, and between your offspring and hers.
- 17:44They will strike at your head while you
- 17:47strike at their heel.
- 17:49To the woman he said, I will intensify
- 17:54your toil and childbearing.
- 17:56In pain you shall bring forth children.
- 17:58Yet your urge shall be for your husband,
- 18:01and he shall rule over you.
- 18:03To the man he said, Because you listened
- 18:06to your wife and ate from the tree,
- 18:08about which I commanded you, you shall not
- 18:11eat from it.
- 18:12Cursed is the ground because of you.
- 18:15In toil you shall eat its yield all
- 18:17the days of your life.
- 18:19Thorns and thistles it shall bear for you,
- 18:22and you shall eat the grass of the
- 18:23field.
- 18:23By the sweat of your brow you shall
- 18:26eat bread, until you return to the ground
- 18:29from which you were taken.
- 18:31For you are dust, and to dust you
- 18:33shall return.
- 18:35The man gave his wife the name Eve,
- 18:38because she was the mother of all the
- 18:40living.
- 18:41So to me this is the first scripture
- 18:44where we see Mary.
- 18:46And this is just packed with so much.
- 18:49I love Genesis.
- 18:51I love the Old Testament.
- 18:52It's amazing how often I go back to
- 18:54Genesis to understand what's going on in life
- 18:58around me.
- 19:01I find it very illuminating that the fall
- 19:07is essentially Satan arrives in the garden and
- 19:12he shows up to divide.
- 19:15He is the divider.
- 19:17He is dividing, first, the woman from God.
- 19:24He is basically questioning God.
- 19:27He is saying, did God really say that?
- 19:29And then he divides her from God.
- 19:32And then very quickly after that, he is
- 19:34dividing the husband and wife.
- 19:36He is dividing the man and woman.
- 19:39I think a lot of us can relate
- 19:40to that in the world today.
- 19:42Our families are under attack.
- 19:43Father Ritberger says good families are especially under
- 19:47attack right now.
- 19:49So this comes straight from the garden.
- 19:54This is Satan's game.
- 19:56He is first and foremost trying to divide
- 19:58each one of us from God.
- 20:00And secondly, he is trying to divide us
- 20:02from our spouses and destroy our families.
- 20:06And that starts right here.
- 20:07So I find that interesting.
- 20:09And then it's the woman.
- 20:14This is consistent language throughout the Bible.
- 20:17Jesus uses the term woman.
- 20:19God uses woman from the beginning.
- 20:23So this passage where he says, I will
- 20:28put enmity between you and the woman.
- 20:31I will put hatred between you and the
- 20:34woman and between your offspring and hers.
- 20:36This is basically the prophecy of Mary.
- 20:40That Mary is going to come along.
- 20:43There is going to be enmity between Mary
- 20:45and Satan.
- 20:49That enmity is read often as original sin.
- 20:54We have original sin because of the fall.
- 20:56But God is going to remove that original
- 20:58sin for this new woman.
- 21:00A lot of times people have a problem
- 21:02with that.
- 21:02But I would point out that Adam and
- 21:04Eve were created immaculately.
- 21:08They did not have original sin from the
- 21:10beginning.
- 21:11Of course God can create.
- 21:14He is not under the yoke of Satan
- 21:17because Satan created the fall and caused original
- 21:21sin and death to enter the world.
- 21:23It does not mean that God has to
- 21:26abide by Satan's rule.
- 21:28God chooses to make a new Eve without
- 21:31sin.
- 21:32And a new Adam which is Jesus we
- 21:34know.
- 21:35So to me that enmity is read as
- 21:39this new woman is going to be as
- 21:42Eve was in the beginning.
- 21:43She is not going to have sin.
- 21:45So there is going to be enmity between
- 21:47you and her offspring is going to be
- 21:50the same.
- 21:51He is going to come from something that
- 21:54does not have the corruption of the original
- 21:56sin.
- 21:57And then between your offspring and hers and
- 22:00they will strike at your head while you
- 22:03strike at their heel.
- 22:05So again they, this woman and her offspring
- 22:09are going to strike at the head of
- 22:11Satan and vice versa.
- 22:13So that is just a great hope to
- 22:16me.
- 22:16I mean it is a great promise that
- 22:19God says right from the fall He prophesies
- 22:21our redemption and our salvation in the future
- 22:24that is beautiful.
- 22:26And the role that we are going to,
- 22:28that the woman is going to play in
- 22:29it and that Jesus is going to be
- 22:31ultimately, He is ultimately going to be the
- 22:34one who saves us.
- 22:35But the role that the ark is going
- 22:38to play in that as well.
- 22:40And that they are going to strike at
- 22:41Satan's head while he strikes at their heel.
- 22:44So the partnership, the togetherness that there is
- 22:48going to be present between mother and son
- 22:52for the offspring, which I would count myself
- 22:54as an offspring of Mary.
- 22:56Those of us who are believers in Christ,
- 23:00He no longer calls us friends but He
- 23:03calls us brothers.
- 23:05So at the cross He gives Mary to
- 23:09John as His mother.
- 23:11So we are the children of Mary when
- 23:15we become brothers of Christ or the body
- 23:20of Christ.
- 23:21Like the same thing, the church is the
- 23:23body of Christ.
- 23:25So being the body of Christ, Christ's body
- 23:28came from Mary, we are Mary's children.
- 23:30I take that very seriously and that we
- 23:33have both Christ and Mary striking at Satan
- 23:38is just a wonderful thing.
- 23:41So as that continues on, it is just
- 23:44interesting to me that it is toil and
- 23:48childbearing and pain.
- 23:50And then for the man it is going
- 23:51to be work.
- 23:53It is going to be by the sweat
- 23:54of your brow.
- 23:56St. Joseph comes along later as the foster
- 23:59father of Jesus and he is just a
- 24:01pure worker.
- 24:02He is just an honest carpenter.
- 24:05It is almost as if God is stitching
- 24:11back together these things that were torn apart
- 24:16by the fall.
- 24:18So I think that is beautiful.
- 24:20So then we go to the end.
- 24:23We are going to jump to the end
- 24:24now, which I love.
- 24:28Mary arrives again here.
- 24:30So we are Revelation chapter 12, the woman
- 24:33and the dragon.
- 24:34A great sign appeared in the sky.
- 24:37A woman clothed with the sun, with the
- 24:40moon under her feet, and on her head
- 24:42a crown of twelve stars.
- 24:44She was with child and wailed aloud in
- 24:47pain as she labored to give birth.
- 24:49Then another sign appeared in the sky.
- 24:51It was a huge red dragon with seven
- 24:54heads and ten horns, and on its head
- 24:56were seven diadems.
- 24:57Its tail swept away a third of the
- 24:59stars in the sky and hurled them down
- 25:01to the earth.
- 25:02Then the dragon stood before the woman, about
- 25:05to give birth, to devour her child when
- 25:08she gave birth.
- 25:10She gave birth to a son, a male
- 25:12child, destined to rule all the nations with
- 25:14an iron rod.
- 25:16Her child was caught up to God in
- 25:17his throne.
- 25:19The woman herself fled into the desert where
- 25:21she had a place prepared by God that
- 25:23there she might take care of for 1260
- 25:27days.
- 25:28Then war broke out in heaven.
- 25:30Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.
- 25:34The dragon and its angels fought back, but
- 25:37they did not prevail.
- 25:38There was no longer any place for them
- 25:40in heaven.
- 25:41The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is
- 25:44called the devil and Satan, who deceived the
- 25:47whole world, was thrown down to earth, and
- 25:49its angels were thrown down with it.
- 25:52Then I heard a loud voice in heaven
- 25:54say, Now have salvation and power come, and
- 25:58the kingdom of our God, and the authority
- 26:00of his anointed.
- 26:01For the accuser of our brothers is cast
- 26:04out, who accuses them before our God day
- 26:07and night.
- 26:08They conquered him by the blood of the
- 26:10Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.
- 26:13Love for life did not deter them from
- 26:15death.
- 26:17Therefore rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell
- 26:19in them.
- 26:20But woe to you, earth and sea, for
- 26:22the devil has come down to you in
- 26:24great fury.
- 26:26For he knows he has but a short
- 26:28time.
- 26:29When the dragon saw that it had been
- 26:31thrown down to the earth, it pursued the
- 26:33woman who had given birth to the male
- 26:35child.
- 26:36But the woman was given two wings of
- 26:38the great eagle, so that she could fly
- 26:40to her place in the desert, where far
- 26:43from the serpent she was taken care of
- 26:45for a year, two years and a half
- 26:48year.
- 26:48The serpent, however, spewed a torrent of water
- 26:51out of his mouth after the woman to
- 26:53sweep her away with the current.
- 26:56But the earth helped the woman and opened
- 26:58its mouth and swallowed the flood that the
- 27:00dragon spewed out of its mouth.
- 27:02Then the dragon became angry with the woman
- 27:05and went off to wage war against the
- 27:07rest of her offspring.
- 27:09Those who keep God's commandments and bear witness
- 27:12to Jesus, it took its position on the
- 27:15sand of the sea.
- 27:17So I love that.
- 27:18It's beautiful.
- 27:20I'm an imaginative guy.
- 27:22I just love these images.
- 27:23When I see, you know, when she's clothed
- 27:27with the sun, that takes me to Fatima.
- 27:29Like immediately in my mind, the miracle of
- 27:31the sun in Fatima.
- 27:32Just such a beautiful image.
- 27:34The moon under her feet.
- 27:37Her head, a crown of 12 stars.
- 27:40It's just a beautiful thinking of that.
- 27:43An image of the Blessed Mother looking that
- 27:47way.
- 27:48Just breathtaking to me.
- 27:51And then it's just so important to see
- 27:53the fury and hatred that Satan has for
- 27:57her.
- 27:59I mean, she's the instrument that brought through
- 28:01which Jesus entered into the world.
- 28:06I've heard it said that Lucifer, before he
- 28:09fell, you know, Lucifer, light.
- 28:12Like he wanted to be the light bearer.
- 28:15He wanted to bring God incarnate into the
- 28:18world.
- 28:18And when he discovered that that was not
- 28:20his role, that God had a different plan,
- 28:23that's when he chose not to serve.
- 28:26He said non servium.
- 28:28He wouldn't serve God.
- 28:30It was beneath him that Mary would have
- 28:34this role.
- 28:35And so that's kind of what set off
- 28:37this war that's being described here with St.
- 28:39Michael and the third of the angels being
- 28:42thrown down to the earth.
- 28:44So I just, to me it's so important
- 28:47to understand that this is real.
- 28:52We're not doing battle against flesh and blood.
- 28:54Our brothers and sisters, we're in a war
- 28:57for their souls.
- 29:00That it's Satan and these angels that prowl
- 29:03the world trying to lead others astray.
- 29:08And, you know, it's how we have these
- 29:10advocates.
- 29:11We have Jesus Christ, God incarnate.
- 29:14We have Mary, who is our advocate, who
- 29:20is very close to her son, who, if
- 29:24we're going to do battle with these things,
- 29:26we need all of these powers, St. Michael,
- 29:28to help us to be able to have
- 29:33a chance.
- 29:35Let's see, so I've got one more here
- 29:38in Revelations because while we're here, I'm like,
- 29:41why not?
- 29:43It goes on to talk about the king
- 29:46of kings, which is Jesus.
- 29:47This is another passage that sends my imagination
- 29:51crazy.
- 29:53So there's a lot of talk in our
- 29:55world today about no kings and whether Christ
- 29:59the king is an appropriate term.
- 30:02So I love this passage from Revelation.
- 30:06This is Revelation 19.
- 30:09The king of kings, verse 11.
- 30:13Then I saw the heavens opened and there
- 30:15was a white horse.
- 30:17Its rider was called Faithful and True.
- 30:22He judges and wages war in righteousness.
- 30:25His eyes were like a fiery flame, and
- 30:29on his head were many diadems.
- 30:31He had a name inscribed that no one
- 30:33knows except himself.
- 30:35He wore a cloak that had been dipped
- 30:37in blood, and his name was called The
- 30:40Word of God.
- 30:42The armies of heaven followed him, mounted on
- 30:45white horses and wearing clean white linen.
- 30:49Out of his mouth came a sharp sword
- 30:51to strike the nations.
- 30:52He will rule them with an iron rod,
- 30:55and he himself will tread out in the
- 30:58winepress the wine of the fury and wrath
- 31:01of God the Almighty.
- 31:03He has a name written on his cloak
- 31:05and on his thigh, King of kings and
- 31:09Lord of lords.
- 31:11I love that.
- 31:13So that's the son, right?
- 31:15That's Mary's son, Jesus, Jesus the warrior.
- 31:22You know, Jesus also has many ways that
- 31:25he presents himself, but I love that, the
- 31:28cloak dipped in blood, the precious blood of
- 31:31Christ, the blood that seals us and protects
- 31:34us and saves us.
- 31:36I just think that's such an important image,
- 31:40you know, that us as believers here fighting
- 31:43in this fallen world, we need to look
- 31:47up, we need to remember that the victory
- 31:51is assured and how powerful those are that
- 31:58we follow, how powerful our God is, how
- 32:04really the power that Satan and the fallen
- 32:07angels, the demons of this world have, they
- 32:10really have no power.
- 32:11God's already defeated them.
- 32:12Any power that they have in this world
- 32:15is because God allows it, often for our
- 32:19salvation, which is an interesting concept, but it's
- 32:25a comforting one.
- 32:27I could speak to that many times throughout
- 32:30my life, most of what you deem as
- 32:33being bad things that happen to you.
- 32:36At the time, it's easy to fall into
- 32:40self-pity.
- 32:41Why is God allowing this to happen to
- 32:43me?
- 32:43Why am I going through this?
- 32:45But having persevered through the trial, having clung
- 32:49to God, having clung to Mother Mary, and
- 32:54praying, you know, praying for not your way
- 32:57but God's way, when you get through it
- 32:59and you look back, you see how much
- 33:01fruit you gained out of those trials, and
- 33:03that's the whole point.
- 33:04That's why God allows evil in the world,
- 33:07because he uses it for his greater good.
- 33:12It's just a beautiful, comforting thing.
- 33:15No matter what you go through, knowing that
- 33:16you're a warrior for Christ, and knowing exactly
- 33:21how much of a warrior Christ is, that
- 33:24we don't see now, but who he truly
- 33:27is, gives you so much courage for the
- 33:31battle.
- 33:33So, I think those are important.
- 33:35The very beginning, the very end, and then
- 33:37I'll end with this one here.
- 33:40This is the announcement of the birth of
- 33:43Jesus.
- 33:43So this is Luke 1, 26.
- 33:46In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was
- 33:49sent from God to a town of Galilee
- 33:50called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a
- 33:54man named Joseph of the house of David.
- 33:57And the virgin's name was Mary.
- 33:59And coming to her he said, Hail, favored
- 34:01one, the Lord is with you.
- 34:04But she was greatly troubled at what was
- 34:06said and pondered what sort of greeting this
- 34:08might be.
- 34:10Then the angel said to her, Do not
- 34:11be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor
- 34:14with God.
- 34:15Behold, you will conceive in your womb and
- 34:17bear a son, and you shall name him
- 34:19Jesus.
- 34:20He will be great and will be called
- 34:23Son of the Most High.
- 34:25And the Lord God will give him the
- 34:27throne of David his father.
- 34:28And he will rule over the house of
- 34:30Jacob forever.
- 34:32And of his kingdom there will be no
- 34:34end.
- 34:34But Mary said to the angel, How can
- 34:37this be, since I have no relations with
- 34:40the man?
- 34:41And the angel said to her in reply,
- 34:43The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and
- 34:46the power of the Most High will overshadow
- 34:49you.
- 34:50Therefore the child to be born will be
- 34:51called Holy, the Son of God.
- 34:54And behold, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived
- 34:58a son in her old age, and this
- 35:00is the sixth month for her who was
- 35:02called barren, for nothing will be impossible for
- 35:05God.
- 35:06Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of
- 35:09the Lord.
- 35:10May it be done to me according to
- 35:12your word.
- 35:13Then the angel departed from her.
- 35:16So this is the Annunciation.
- 35:20There's so much in these.
- 35:22I have no chance to really unpack obviously
- 35:26everything that's in here and all these scriptures
- 35:29that I've walked through.
- 35:30I'm just trying to give a layman's witness
- 35:32to it.
- 35:33But when I read this, one of the
- 35:37things that comes to me is this isn't
- 35:41a perfect situation.
- 35:43Mary's already betrothed.
- 35:47It's a trial.
- 35:49It's a trial.
- 35:52That's a great mystery.
- 35:54It's a great mystery.
- 35:56I would say in the very beginning where
- 36:01it talked about we are from ashes and
- 36:03to ashes we'll return.
- 36:04I try to keep that in front of
- 36:07mine often.
- 36:08Memento mori, remember your death.
- 36:12That we are from the soil.
- 36:14We are from the earth, and we're going
- 36:15to go back to the earth.
- 36:16So humility.
- 36:17Humility is so important to stay close to
- 36:20from where we came, stay close to that
- 36:23concept that all good things come from God
- 36:26alone.
- 36:29We're from the soil.
- 36:32We have the gift of the Spirit from
- 36:34God.
- 36:36And all our good fruit, all good gifts
- 36:39and talents that we have, they're all from
- 36:41God, and they're all going to go back
- 36:43to God.
- 36:44And so keeping that front of mind, I
- 36:48think that's the importance of trial is that
- 36:51through trial we'll find humility.
- 36:55And through humility we can receive the Holy
- 36:58Spirit and be most fertile like the soil
- 37:00so that the seeds of the Spirit can
- 37:03grow in us and bear God's fruit in
- 37:05God's time.
- 37:07And so, yeah, this coming to you and
- 37:12God has a plan for you that is
- 37:15a divine plan.
- 37:16It's not an earthly plan.
- 37:18It doesn't fit into the confines of what
- 37:20the earth deems to be right.
- 37:24God's ways are higher.
- 37:26And so how shocking that probably would be,
- 37:30you know, and the angel saying that you
- 37:34have found favor with God, you know, hail
- 37:36favored one.
- 37:38I can't get into Bible, let's see, all
- 37:44the different translations of the Bible.
- 37:48You know, that's quicksand in itself because so
- 37:54many people like to argue about the different
- 37:56translations.
- 37:57There are other translations where basically that whole
- 38:02thing is the beginning of the Hail Mary,
- 38:04so people will ask about the Hail Mary.
- 38:06Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is
- 38:08with thee, blessed art thou among women, and
- 38:10blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus,
- 38:12that's the beginning half of the Hail Mary
- 38:14prayer.
- 38:16And, you know, that comes straight from the
- 38:18scripture reading.
- 38:20Hail favored one, the Lord is with you.
- 38:23And it also comes from, you know, in
- 38:25the future we'll talk about the visitation, but
- 38:27Elizabeth says, you know, blessed is the fruit
- 38:29of thy womb.
- 38:30How is it that you come to me?
- 38:34Divine inspired words, you know, the Holy Spirit
- 38:36comes upon both of them and they speak
- 38:38that way.
- 38:40So this is the Hail Mary prayer which,
- 38:42you know, this will continue on to talk
- 38:44about the Rosary in a future episode, but
- 38:47this is the beginning of the sword of
- 38:49the Rosary right here being spoken.
- 38:53You know, finding favor with God, you know,
- 38:57a lot of times that will be translated
- 38:59as full of grace.
- 39:01As I already kind of unpacked, the full
- 39:04of grace makes sense because the lack of
- 39:07grace comes from the fall and original sin
- 39:09and the fullness of grace is absolutely required
- 39:14for this new arc to bring God incarnate
- 39:18into the world.
- 39:19I just can't, there's no other way that
- 39:22God would, you know, would choose to bring
- 39:25his son, fully divine and fully man into
- 39:29the world except through a vessel that was
- 39:31full of grace.
- 39:32So, you know, this is where these words
- 39:34come from.
- 39:35And I like her response.
- 39:40You know, her response is, you know, Behold,
- 39:43Ece.
- 39:44Kind of what we talked of in the
- 39:45beginning.
- 39:46Ece, behold, I am the handmaid of the
- 39:48Lord.
- 39:49Like, she is lowly.
- 39:50She's placing herself in a place of humility
- 39:54and she's just saying, behold, I will do
- 39:58whatever you ask me to do, basically.
- 40:00So I love those words from that, too.
- 40:06You know, he basically lays it out that
- 40:11the son's going to be from the Holy
- 40:13Spirit.
- 40:13It's going to be from God.
- 40:15And he prophesies to her, you know, as
- 40:17a sign that Elizabeth also is conceived and
- 40:21that she was deemed to be barren but
- 40:23nothing's impossible for God.
- 40:26You know, he's saying, hey, here's a sign.
- 40:29I mean, even though she never asked for
- 40:31it.
- 40:31And that's one thing that's really important to
- 40:33take away from this exchange to me is
- 40:35that, you know, when God brings something to
- 40:40you, you know, Mary's response is, you know,
- 40:45how can this be?
- 40:47What am I to do?
- 40:49When?
- 40:50Where?
- 40:51But it's never why.
- 40:53And I think that's something that is a
- 40:55great witness to take away from Mary is
- 40:57that it's not for us to know God's
- 41:00ways.
- 41:01The why is really not that we're not
- 41:03on a plane to know why.
- 41:05We're on the plane of how do I
- 41:07respond?
- 41:08What do I do to serve your will?
- 41:11Where do you want me to go?
- 41:13When do you want me to do?
- 41:15And, you know, that is a consistent three.
- 41:18Here I am, Lord.
- 41:19Send me.
- 41:20Send me to do your will.
- 41:22And Mary's a perfect witness to this.
- 41:24And this kind of gets to me to
- 41:26the real, you know, as Mary, the honor
- 41:34that Mary deserves from us comes from the
- 41:39fact she's a great hero because she's one
- 41:46of us, right?
- 41:48Jesus is God made man, but sometimes I
- 41:51think it's hard to relate because he's divine.
- 41:54So it's like he's God.
- 41:55Of course he can always make the right
- 41:57decisions.
- 41:58I mean, he's God.
- 41:59He knows what's going to happen.
- 42:01And sometimes it's hard to relate to God
- 42:04in the flesh.
- 42:05But Mary is a different case because Mary
- 42:08is us.
- 42:10She's fully us.
- 42:12She's fully us as we were intended to
- 42:14be, right?
- 42:15She's the new Eve.
- 42:18So she's easier to relate to.
- 42:21She's a humble.
- 42:21She's a servant.
- 42:23She's a handmaiden of God.
- 42:26She knows what it is to be fully
- 42:28human, just lacking in original sin.
- 42:32So sometimes I think people get almost self
- 42:37-conscious of that.
- 42:38They try to bring Mary down onto our
- 42:42level to relate to her more fully.
- 42:45But I think to me it's much more
- 42:47beneficial to just look at Mary as somebody
- 42:54who is just like us and who knows
- 42:58what it is to be human and who
- 43:01is our advocate, who responded in a way
- 43:04that we all should emulate our response to
- 43:07be, not asking why, not raising ourself up,
- 43:13just being lowly and giving our fiat and
- 43:18letting God's wondrous plan work in our life
- 43:22however he sees fit.
- 43:24So I think that's probably all I would
- 43:28say.
- 43:29I think the last point I would just
- 43:31make is these titles of Mary, Mediatrix of
- 43:36All Graces and Co-Redemptrix, that comes directly
- 43:40from these scriptures, and we'll unpack that a
- 43:44little bit more, but I think of that
- 43:45often.
- 43:47She's the Mediatrix.
- 43:49She gave her fiat.
- 43:51God so loves us and respects our free
- 43:53will that he was only going to work
- 43:55through us with our consent, and Mary gave
- 43:59that consent on behalf of all of us.
- 44:01So she's the Mediatrix.
- 44:02That's where it comes from to me.
- 44:04She said yes, and through her yes, she
- 44:08mediated our salvation.
- 44:10Jesus does it.
- 44:11Jesus is God.
- 44:12Mary is not.
- 44:13But she mediates, and he kept her in
- 44:16that position.
- 44:17It's kind of a consistent theme also throughout
- 44:19the Bible that God always, through his mercy
- 44:23and love for us, he chooses.
- 44:25So intimate he wants to be with us
- 44:28that he uses his creation and he uses
- 44:32us to do the work of his salvation.
- 44:35And in this way, he uses Mary to
- 44:37mediate, to do his work of grace in
- 44:41the world.
- 44:41God, Jesus, is the source of the grace,
- 44:44but Mary passes that grace down into the
- 44:47world.
- 44:47That's part of his plan, and it's a
- 44:50beautiful thing.
- 44:51It's a beautiful thing because she knows us.
- 44:53She knows the human condition.
- 44:54She knows the human heart.
- 44:56She has so much love for us as
- 44:57her children that her entire, really to understand
- 45:03fully her being, the only way you can
- 45:05understand Mary's entire full being is through Jesus,
- 45:11that she was the instrument to bring Jesus
- 45:14in, and she's the instrument to do the
- 45:16work of God as the perfect witness of
- 45:20the Trinity.
- 45:22All right, I think that wraps it up
- 45:25for this first one.
- 45:26That's a lot.
- 45:28It's a deep, bottomless topic.
- 45:32Again, it's just a layman who is so
- 45:35in love with the Blessed Virgin, who's placed
- 45:38so much of his life in the Blessed
- 45:39Virgin's hands, who seeks every day, every hour
- 45:43to be an instrument in her hands for
- 45:45the sole purpose that I know she leads
- 45:47me closest to her son, closest to her
- 45:50spouse, closest to her father.
- 45:54I hope you get some good fruit out
- 45:57of this, and if you've got questions or
- 45:58comments, please leave them so I can answer
- 46:02them, and the more questions I get, it
- 46:04just causes me to grow and learn more
- 46:07and more.
