- 0:01Speaker 1: The issues, the interviews and the insight. Ryan Bridge on
- 0:05Speaker 1: Earlieritia with one Root Love where you live News talks.
- 0:09Speaker 2: That'd be good morning. It is Friday, six after five.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Great to have your company this morning. Coming up on
- 0:14Speaker 2: the show this Trump Putin meeting. What is Putin's game plan?
- 0:18Speaker 2: We'll go to Alaska. We're in London as well, where
- 0:20Speaker 2: stars meeting with Zelensky. Ahead of that chat in Alaska,
- 0:25Speaker 2: we'll go to Josh Confeld on his predictions for the
- 0:27Speaker 2: abs in Argentina. Team namings happening today. Pine trees are
- 0:32Speaker 2: holding back sheep numbers in New Zealand. The live stock
- 0:35Speaker 2: decline is slowing, but it's still not positive. We'll look
- 0:38Speaker 2: at that shortly. And AI is inventing antibiotics. We've got
- 0:43Speaker 2: a story, a fascinating story actually out of the UK
- 0:46Speaker 2: for you this morning.
- 0:47Speaker 1: On that.
- 0:47Speaker 2: It is seven alf to five, the agenda fright out
- 0:52Speaker 2: th of August. Russia's delegation is on its way to Alaska.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Trump says there's a twenty five percent chance of success
- 0:58Speaker 2: and the White House will try everything for a deal.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I don't know that we're going to get an immediate easpyer,
- 1:04Speaker 3: but I think it's going to come.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I'm more interested in immediate peace deal getting.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Piece fed, and depending on what happens with my.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Meeting, I'm going to be calling the President Zelenski.
- 1:15Speaker 3: And let's get him over to wherever we're.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Going to meet. Well, Zelenski himself is actually in Downing
- 1:19Speaker 2: Street with Starma.
- 1:21Speaker 5: The area of discussion this morning with Keir Starmer and
- 1:24Speaker 5: Valdimir's Lensky was on security guarantees, and as we had earlier,
- 1:28Speaker 5: Marca Rivial, the American Secretary of State, is talking about
- 1:31Speaker 5: security guarantees too. That would be seen by Europe as
- 1:34Speaker 5: positive that they're moving America towards perhaps some kind of
- 1:38Speaker 5: security backstop, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're there yet.
- 1:41Speaker 2: All right, guards of the world's talking about recognizing a
- 1:44Speaker 2: Palestinian state. Well, this could throw a spanner in the works.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Israel now plans to build entire new homes and settlements.
- 1:52Speaker 2: This is thousands of new houses in the occupied West Bank.
- 1:55Speaker 2: This would split the territory in two. Israel's far right
- 1:58Speaker 2: finance minister, he who we have sanctioned, says it would
- 2:01Speaker 2: permanently bury the idea of a Palestinian state.
- 2:04Speaker 6: Australia Canada and others plan to recognize a Palestinian state,
- 2:09Speaker 6: and that far right finance minister Bittsalo Smutrich says they
- 2:12Speaker 6: may have their dreams of a Palestinian state effectively, but
- 2:16Speaker 6: his reality is to create facts on the ground and
- 2:20Speaker 6: make this, or try to make this at least irreversible.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Now, this is your Swifty update this morning, courtesy of
- 2:26Speaker 2: our producer Mackenzie, who's clearly obsessed. Swifty's finally been able
- 2:30Speaker 2: to breathe a sigh of relief. Now the full two
- 2:33Speaker 2: hour podcast with Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelsey
- 2:37Speaker 2: has been released. She gave more details on a new
- 2:39Speaker 2: album and also how she met Travis.
- 2:42Speaker 7: Why are you coming on the show?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Why what are you doing?
- 2:46Speaker 8: There's so many better things to do at your time.
- 2:48Speaker 9: This podcast has done a lot for me. I owe
- 2:51Speaker 9: a lot of this podcast. This podcast got me a
- 2:54Speaker 9: boyfriend ever since Travis decided to use it as his
- 2:57Speaker 9: personal dating app about two years ago.
- 3:00Speaker 8: Worked pretty good.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 1: The first word on the News of the Day early
- 3:06Speaker 1: edition with Ryan Bridge and One Roofe Love Where You Live.
- 3:10Speaker 2: News Talk said b must be the longest relationship she's
- 3:14Speaker 2: had in a very long time. I'm just looking at
- 3:16Speaker 2: McKenzie here for affirmation because she normally they last two days.
- 3:20Speaker 2: This one's been going for what a couple of years? Now, Yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 2: she's going strong, good on her nine minutes after five now.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yesterday we spoke about Trump's game plan ahead of this
- 3:29Speaker 2: big meeting in Alaska. Can you imagine Anchorage is not
- 3:32Speaker 2: a big place. They fly tiny planes in there. I'm
- 3:34Speaker 2: assuming there's a military base where they're going to land
- 3:37Speaker 2: all the big aircraft from Russia and from the Washington
- 3:41Speaker 2: But it's a small place. Imagine living there and just
- 3:44Speaker 2: walker and then Putin. Vladimir Putin is coming to your
- 3:48Speaker 2: tiny little town. Very bizarre for them. Anyway, we spoke
- 3:51Speaker 2: about Trump's game plan yesterday. You know, he's saying, this
- 3:54Speaker 2: is setting the table for a second meeting between Zelenski
- 3:57Speaker 2: and Putin and me if you want me. And he's
- 4:00Speaker 2: talking about the repercussions. You know, if they don't agree
- 4:03Speaker 2: to this, or don't agree to more talks, there will
- 4:06Speaker 2: be consequences for the Russians. All this kind of stuff.
- 4:09Speaker 2: But what's Putin's game plan? One of the Kremlin's advisors
- 4:13Speaker 2: has been briefing the press on what their angle is
- 4:17Speaker 2: going to be with Trump, and basically it's quite simple.
- 4:19Speaker 2: They're going to appeal to his business instincts, which is
- 4:22Speaker 2: his first and only instinct. Really, Putin's going to offer
- 4:26Speaker 2: financial incentives to Trump. This advisor says there's huge untapped
- 4:32Speaker 2: potential of US Russia relations. He's actually taking two of
- 4:36Speaker 2: his big wig economic advisors with him. He's taking his
- 4:39Speaker 2: finance minister, which is a big sign. The big sticking
- 4:42Speaker 2: points though really you know Kiev's NATO membership, which is
- 4:46Speaker 2: possible in the future, territory and sanctions. But clearly they
- 4:50Speaker 2: are going to try and charm Trump. And you know,
- 4:53Speaker 2: if you do this, if you let us have this land,
- 4:56Speaker 2: if we do, then we can do this for you.
- 4:58Speaker 2: So it's going to be a business meeting as much
- 5:00Speaker 2: as it is a diplomatic one. Eleven after five, talk
- 5:04Speaker 2: about the state of our dairy industry, well, sheep and beef.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Actually we'll talk about that next because the Select committees
- 5:13Speaker 2: come back with some recommendations about what do you do
- 5:15Speaker 2: with all the forestry that's coming in and taking up
- 5:17Speaker 2: the farmland. There's new numbers out this morning which will
- 5:21Speaker 2: bring you and speak to fed farmers about can we
- 5:24Speaker 2: arrest that decline in our sheep numbers? If we are
- 5:28Speaker 2: to double our exports as the government keeps saying we
- 5:31Speaker 2: should be doing, can we do it with the amount
- 5:34Speaker 2: of pine trees we have growing in this country? Right now?
- 5:37Speaker 2: Twelve after five News TALKSB.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Get ahead of the headlines on early edition with Ryan
- 5:44Speaker 1: Bridge and one roof Love where you Live News TALKSB five.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Fourteen on News TALKSB nine two ninety two is the
- 5:51Speaker 2: numbers text love to hear from you this morning on
- 5:53Speaker 2: our points of discussion. You know, what do you think
- 5:56Speaker 2: is going to happen with this Trump putin meeting. I'm
- 5:58Speaker 2: going to talk to Josh Coonfeld on the ABS and
- 6:00Speaker 2: Argentina next right now. If you remember, back in May,
- 6:03Speaker 2: stats in ZID data showed sheep numbers had fallen twenty
- 6:07Speaker 2: one percent, beef cattle by thirteen percent. This is over
- 6:09Speaker 2: the past decade. Well now, Beef and LAMB says for
- 6:13Speaker 2: the year ending June, this is the year ending June,
- 6:15Speaker 2: sheep numbers fell by just one percent. Beef cattle rose
- 6:19Speaker 2: actually up four point four percent. So what does all
- 6:22Speaker 2: this mean? Richard Dawkins as Fed Farmers Meat and whel
- 6:24Speaker 2: chair with us this morning, Richard, Good morning.
- 6:27Speaker 10: Yeah, good morning, Ryan.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Hey, what do you make of these numbers?
- 6:31Speaker 10: Yeah, it's great to see. That's like recovery, isn't it.
- 6:35Speaker 10: But it's just important to understand the nuance of these
- 6:38Speaker 10: figures and the overall trend.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I suppose what is the nuance.
- 6:44Speaker 10: So we're seeing a recovery and numbers due to the
- 6:47Speaker 10: rebuild after cyclone Gabrielle and also a couple of regions
- 6:51Speaker 10: coming out of drought last year, so so restocking on
- 6:56Speaker 10: capital stock. But yeah, we're obviously still concerned with that
- 7:01Speaker 10: general trend over the last two or three years, which
- 7:05Speaker 10: shows us down about one and a half million stock units.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Because we've got obviously export prices increasing. We've got that
- 7:12Speaker 2: part of the equation seems to be looking good. But
- 7:16Speaker 2: what's holding it back? Is it all forestry or what?
- 7:21Speaker 7: Oh?
- 7:21Speaker 10: Look, there's there's no doubt the sector is in a
- 7:23Speaker 10: really good space, Ryan, and it's fantastic to see. We
- 7:26Speaker 10: have to see these that we have to enjoy these
- 7:30Speaker 10: positive times returns wise, the higher schedules are combined with
- 7:37Speaker 10: some easing of farm working expenses, but also interest rates
- 7:41Speaker 10: coming down, so that's good timing. But look, the major
- 7:44Speaker 10: concern for the sheep and beef sector, particularly right now
- 7:47Speaker 10: is this Climate Change Amendment Bill and preventing those wholesale
- 7:52Speaker 10: conversions to carbon forestry.
- 7:55Speaker 2: What exactly is wrong because there's I've seen fed farmers
- 7:59Speaker 2: say so not happy with some of the changes from
- 8:02Speaker 2: the Select Committee about conversion. What exactly is wrong here?
- 8:07Speaker 10: Yeah, Look, so I want to be really clear. We
- 8:10Speaker 10: support the intent of the bill. We think the Coalition
- 8:14Speaker 10: government is trying to do the right thing, but I'm
- 8:17Speaker 10: just not sure if possibly they're across all of the details.
- 8:22Speaker 10: So the and I want to be clear too, Ryan,
- 8:25Speaker 10: this is actually a restriction on people's ability to claim
- 8:28Speaker 10: carbon credits. It's not actually a restriction on their ability
- 8:31Speaker 10: to plant trees. But the reality is the protections are
- 8:35Speaker 10: mostly on classes one to five, and only twelve percent
- 8:41Speaker 10: of the whole farm conversions were actually on that country.
- 8:44Speaker 10: So the majority of our sheep and be farms sixty
- 8:48Speaker 10: six percent of our sheep and BF farms are on
- 8:51Speaker 10: classes and classes six and seven, which don't have those restrictions.
- 8:55Speaker 2: So you would be able to claim credits on land
- 8:58Speaker 2: that you think should be fund.
- 9:03Speaker 10: So the way the bill stands, if you plant your
- 9:06Speaker 10: entire property in trees, you could only claim credits on
- 9:10Speaker 10: twenty five percent of that area. So look, if it's
- 9:14Speaker 10: the right tree in the right place, and there's a
- 9:17Speaker 10: commercial demand for that timber, there's nothing stopping you doing that. However,
- 9:23Speaker 10: it should prevent sheep of beef farms being lost due
- 9:27Speaker 10: to the ets and that carbon value, but like I said,
- 9:31Speaker 10: it doesn't extend to where the majority of the sheep
- 9:34Speaker 10: and beef farms actually.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Are, right, gotcha. So the government obviously wants to double
- 9:39Speaker 2: our exports. Sheep and beef will have to be a
- 9:41Speaker 2: big part of that. Is this you know, what is
- 9:44Speaker 2: it that would stop us from or prevent us from
- 9:46Speaker 2: doing that or do you think we can?
- 9:49Speaker 10: Yeah, like I said, Ryn, we support the intent of
- 9:51Speaker 10: the villain, And yeah, like you've mentioned, they want to
- 9:55Speaker 10: double exports. So it's sort of strange. It appears they're
- 9:58Speaker 10: siding with polluters over produce uses. So I mean, the
- 10:03Speaker 10: simple solution to me would be actually just extend that
- 10:07Speaker 10: twenty five percent restriction across all land use classes. It's
- 10:13Speaker 10: very strange they have chosen to use that land use
- 10:16Speaker 10: capability class system and that started being developed in the
- 10:20Speaker 10: fifties for soil conservation reasons. It was never designed for legislation,
- 10:26Speaker 10: so I'm just not sure how that would work in reality.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Richard, appreciate your time this morning. Thanks mate, Richard Dawkins
- 10:33Speaker 2: fed Farmer's Meat and Wool chair. It is nineteen minutes
- 10:36Speaker 2: after five news talks. He'd be We'll get to Josh
- 10:38Speaker 2: Confeld next on the ABS in Argentina, on.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Your radio and online on Iheard Radio Early Edition with
- 10:46Speaker 1: Ryan Bridge and One Route Love where you live.
- 10:49Speaker 2: News talks had been five twenty one on your Monday.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Sorry your Friday morning. That was a bit scary for you,
- 10:55Speaker 2: wasn't it? A good text from Juliam. We'll get to
- 10:57Speaker 2: that shortly and we'll be in Alaska before six. We're
- 10:59Speaker 2: into Round one of the Rugby Championship. The AB's face
- 11:02Speaker 2: Argentina Sunday morning. It's nine o'clock our time. At nine
- 11:05Speaker 2: am our time, the Aussies take on South Africa and
- 11:08Speaker 2: Joe Burg and the All Black team naming happens eight
- 11:11Speaker 2: point thirty this morning. Josh Croonfeld is a former All
- 11:14Speaker 2: Black on the show this morning. Good morning, Josh, good morning,
- 11:17Speaker 2: you've I you preved the got me on too early, mate. Sorry,
- 11:22Speaker 2: I'm sorry about that. It's a god awful hour of
- 11:24Speaker 2: the day, isn't it. But I appreciate you being here.
- 11:27Speaker 8: Josh.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Hey, we obviously waiting on the team naming later this morning.
- 11:31Speaker 2: We know, with injuries Roy guards out, are you expecting
- 11:35Speaker 2: any surprises?
- 11:38Speaker 8: Ah, Look no, no, Look I don't think so. We've
- 11:44Speaker 8: definitely you know, Rais has been very forthcoming about this
- 11:50Speaker 8: whole four four thing, and you know, I think four
- 11:54Speaker 8: guys ready to go on the cab in any position.
- 11:58Speaker 8: And the way he he's you know, juggled his injuries,
- 12:02Speaker 8: you know, bringing a lock over for to replace the
- 12:05Speaker 8: loose ford and shifted you know, a lock into loose
- 12:10Speaker 8: for positions and stuff like that, just to get a
- 12:14Speaker 8: feel for you know that he's got players ready to go.
- 12:20Speaker 8: So him maybe picking you know, the new something Simon Parker,
- 12:26Speaker 8: bringing him across him picking that to play against Argy
- 12:31Speaker 8: wouldn't be the wrong thing to do, you know. So no,
- 12:34Speaker 8: I don't think we'll see any surprises into Maybe in
- 12:40Speaker 8: terms of combinations, we might, but I count see, Look,
- 12:45Speaker 8: everybody's picking themselves by the way they're playing.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Basically, what about the we've never lost Argentina and Argentina
- 12:54Speaker 2: no chance of that happening, do you think.
- 12:58Speaker 8: Look, there's always the chance of it happening. I mean
- 13:01Speaker 8: it was krikey the Giant Killers now, you know, like
- 13:07Speaker 8: they've beaten all the top ten nations and it all
- 13:10Speaker 8: depends on who turns up where. And I'm like, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 8: playing over in the country just just bolsters the nation,
- 13:20Speaker 8: you know, like and everybody's there. I mean, they've got
- 13:25Speaker 8: a fanatic crowd and it just it's the whole. Unfortunately,
- 13:30Speaker 8: I've never played over there, so I can't say exactly
- 13:34Speaker 8: what it's like. But we've got to be so in
- 13:37Speaker 8: our game now. Any any sort of slip up or
- 13:41Speaker 8: we just don't quite turn up, we're not quite there,
- 13:45Speaker 8: you know, they'll sneak in and get a win. We
- 13:50Speaker 8: have to be switched on, ready to go when we
- 13:53Speaker 8: travel in these countries.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yes days, well I'm hoping they're fully switched. On Sunday morning, Josh,
- 14:00Speaker 2: I appreciate you. Are you still in bed?
- 14:04Speaker 8: I wondered those getting this question. Yes that I said
- 14:07Speaker 8: the love on five o'clock and then I got up
- 14:09Speaker 8: and then then got back into bed. Yeah. No, yeah,
- 14:14Speaker 8: there's no way when I don't have to be up
- 14:16Speaker 8: till seven o'clock. I'm raised around the house getting my
- 14:22Speaker 8: jobs done.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I'm going to let you go back to sleep. Josh,
- 14:25Speaker 2: you got you got an hour and a half enjoyed.
- 14:28Speaker 8: I don't won't be going just leave may I'll just
- 14:30Speaker 8: do a little bit of stuff. Just givee get my
- 14:35Speaker 8: brain organized ready to go for the day. Mate. That's
- 14:38Speaker 8: just how it works.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Appreciate your time. We're looking forward to Sunday morning Team
- 14:41Speaker 2: naming eight thirty. This morning Josh Confeld, former All Black.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It is twenty five after five News Talks be we'll
- 14:47Speaker 2: talk Ozsie house prices next and the you know, the
- 14:50Speaker 2: relationship here between house prices and wealth quite a significant one.
- 14:55Speaker 2: So what's happening across the Tasmen very interesting at the moment.
- 14:57Speaker 2: We'll look at that next, and we'll get to Vincent
- 15:00Speaker 2: mcavhnie who's in the UK for us after news at
- 15:03Speaker 2: five point thirty the.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Early edition Full the Show podcast on iHeartRadio, Power by News.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Talks AB News TALKSB twenty seven after five question, what's
- 15:13Speaker 2: the point in US having more affordable property prices for
- 15:16Speaker 2: your first home buyer? If young workers are jetting off
- 15:20Speaker 2: to Australia in search of a better tomorrow. There's a
- 15:23Speaker 2: bit of a perverse logic to this. But across the
- 15:25Speaker 2: Tasman right now they're experiencing something of a property boom.
- 15:28Speaker 2: It's the opposite of the stagnant or falling prices that
- 15:31Speaker 2: we're seeing here in New Zealand, where homes of most
- 15:34Speaker 2: regions are actually now considered technically actually considered affordable. In Sydney,
- 15:39Speaker 2: the median price of a new pad will jump seven
- 15:43Speaker 2: percent this year through to June to two point one
- 15:47Speaker 2: million New Zealand dollars. If you want to be a
- 15:49Speaker 2: Melbourne hipster, prices will rise six percent there in the
- 15:53Speaker 2: year to June one point two million dollars the median.
- 15:57Speaker 2: They've got a problem now which we know too well.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Prices are squeezing out first home buyers there. You can't
- 16:03Speaker 2: get on the ladder for love nor money. Look at
- 16:06Speaker 2: new loans from banks landlords, two hundred thousand new loans
- 16:11Speaker 2: over the year. That's the most since twenty twenty two.
- 16:15Speaker 2: First home mortgages they're down to one hundred and sixteen
- 16:18Speaker 2: thousand because they're cutting interest rates there. Houses are you know,
- 16:22Speaker 2: money is becoming more affordable for those with equity, your
- 16:26Speaker 2: existing homeowners, all your landlords. Typically this is seen as
- 16:29Speaker 2: the problem. You want people to have a stake in
- 16:32Speaker 2: their country, and the best way to do that is
- 16:34Speaker 2: owning a piece of it. But property is inextricably linked
- 16:39Speaker 2: to the success of our economy here in New Zealand.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Falling and flat house prices here are not actually a
- 16:45Speaker 2: great news story, are they. The wealth effect of the
- 16:49Speaker 2: biggest asset that most of us own informs our spending habits.
- 16:53Speaker 2: When we feel richer, we go swipe the credit card.
- 16:55Speaker 2: When we don't, we don't. So the question is are
- 16:59Speaker 2: you better off having affordable homes and a country which
- 17:03Speaker 2: young people can't find a job, or are you better
- 17:06Speaker 2: off in a country where homes are less affordable but
- 17:09Speaker 2: wages are higher and the economy is stronger. The answer
- 17:13Speaker 2: lies in the number of Kiwis who are voting with
- 17:15Speaker 2: their feet and buggering off across the Tasman twenty nine
- 17:19Speaker 2: After five News Talks THEBB Alaska Before six.
- 17:25Speaker 1: News and Views You Trust to start your day. It's
- 17:28Speaker 1: earlier edition with Ryan Bridge and one roof Love. Where
- 17:32Speaker 1: You Live News Talks at B.
- 17:36Speaker 2: The conversations. Good morning, three five away from six year
- 17:42Speaker 2: on News Talks Hebb. It is Friday morning and it's
- 17:44Speaker 2: great to have your company. Big day for diplomacy hopefully
- 17:47Speaker 2: tomorrow in Alaska. Will head there for the latest just
- 17:50Speaker 2: before six o'clock this morning. We'll also be in London
- 17:52Speaker 2: where Starma has been meeting with Zelenski. This is from Ken. Ryan,
- 17:56Speaker 2: Trump and Putin are meeting at a military base in
- 17:59Speaker 2: Anchor because I was wondering how where are they all
- 18:02Speaker 2: going to fly into? You know, which airport are they
- 18:04Speaker 2: going to be using. They're actually meeting at a military
- 18:06Speaker 2: base in Anchorage flying and shouldn't be a problem. Anchorage
- 18:10Speaker 2: itself has an airport capable of handling huge cargo aircraft.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Love the update, Ken. This is from We're just talking
- 18:17Speaker 2: about the cost of property in New Zealand the Australia,
- 18:23Speaker 2: and you know, young people are upping sticks and moving
- 18:26Speaker 2: across the Tasman even though there house prices are way
- 18:30Speaker 2: more expensive and are increasing at a faster rate. But
- 18:33Speaker 2: they're going for jobs, right. You need a job before
- 18:35Speaker 2: you get a house, so that's what they're going for. Brian.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Not sure how we can afford to build more affordable
- 18:41Speaker 2: homes in this country when building products are amongst the
- 18:43Speaker 2: highest and most expensive in the world. Same goes for
- 18:46Speaker 2: the sections. I've been a builder for forty years, says
- 18:49Speaker 2: this text. The section price used to be about twelve
- 18:52Speaker 2: percent of the build. It's now up around forty percent.
- 18:56Speaker 2: And it's not like we don't have enough land in
- 18:58Speaker 2: this country. Good point twenty three to six.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Brian Bridge are reporters.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Around the country. Callum Proctor and dned and Colum Good Morning,
- 19:05Speaker 2: Waning Ri. Last chance for anyone wanting to get their
- 19:08Speaker 2: hands on the Kadrona Hotel. Last chance today it is Yes.
- 19:12Speaker 11: This is the one hundred and sixty two year old
- 19:15Speaker 11: heritage listed hotel and restaurant, the famous Kadrona Hotel. It's
- 19:19Speaker 11: been on the market for five weeks and the deadlines today.
- 19:22Speaker 11: There has been ten interests from both New Zealanders and
- 19:26Speaker 11: foreign buyers from the US, Singapore and Australia. Apparently listening
- 19:31Speaker 11: on trade Mean has been the third most popular live
- 19:34Speaker 11: listing this year. It's had more than one hundred and
- 19:36Speaker 11: thirty thousand views. The owners are Cad and Alexis Thornton.
- 19:39Speaker 11: They tell us that the buyer inquiries surpass their expectations
- 19:44Speaker 11: and they're looking forward to announcing details of a sale
- 19:46Speaker 11: in the coming weeks. They've narrowed their discussions to eight
- 19:49Speaker 11: groups and it's looking promising they'll find a highly skilled
- 19:53Speaker 11: buyer to do great things for the hotel and keep
- 19:55Speaker 11: it going.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Great, good piece of iconic New Zealand. How's your weather?
- 20:00Speaker 11: Good Friday today fine, Westerly's easing and sixteen the high
- 20:03Speaker 11: nice one.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Thanks Callum Clears and christ Church clear good morning, Good morning.
- 20:07Speaker 2: This woman who's been arrested at Christchiach Airport over the
- 20:10Speaker 2: student loan debt is quite an.
- 20:11Speaker 12: Old one, yeah, from more than twenty years ago. This
- 20:14Speaker 12: is a forty nine year old woman who lives in
- 20:16Speaker 12: Australia but had flown back to the South Island to
- 20:19Speaker 12: spend some time with family earlier this month. On Monday,
- 20:22Speaker 12: she was just clearing security at christ Church Airport. The
- 20:25Speaker 12: bags were already checked in. She was ready to go
- 20:27Speaker 12: with her family when she was tapped on the shoulder
- 20:30Speaker 12: and told that she wouldn't be returning to Australia. In fact,
- 20:33Speaker 12: she was taken under arrest to the Central Police Station
- 20:36Speaker 12: and then into court. She has been released on bail
- 20:39Speaker 12: after appearing before a magistrate. But this is because of
- 20:42Speaker 12: her outstanding student loan. It is more than fifty thousand
- 20:45Speaker 12: dollars though it's more than twenty years old. Her lawyer
- 20:48Speaker 12: and former IRD prosecutor Dave Anantha says he's now negotiating
- 20:53Speaker 12: for the woman to get a bank loan so she
- 20:55Speaker 12: can pay IRD. They won't accept anything other than payments
- 20:59Speaker 12: before they will return her passport now, he says, Look,
- 21:01Speaker 12: he's surprised by their response and how heavy handed it was,
- 21:05Speaker 12: although the law does allow it, and Arthur is now
- 21:08Speaker 12: encouraging other people not to bury their heads in the sand.
- 21:10Speaker 12: Don't leave your student loan to the last minute. Engage
- 21:13Speaker 12: with the ID and Land Revenue has confirmed the arrest happened,
- 21:17Speaker 12: says it's limited though in what it can say due
- 21:19Speaker 12: to privacy and the fact that's before the court.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Interesting, either you pay it or you just don't come home. Ah,
- 21:25Speaker 2: how's your weather fine?
- 21:27Speaker 12: With a frosty start again northeast of these developing and
- 21:29Speaker 12: the high will be sixteen.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Thanks. Claire. Claudia O'Neill has our Wellington News this morning. Claudia,
- 21:34Speaker 2: good morning, good morning. What's this sludge? Plant cost blowout.
- 21:39Speaker 7: Yes, so this facility is intended to treat the capital's wastewater.
- 21:42Speaker 7: The project's current cost has climbed to between four hundred
- 21:45Speaker 7: and seventy eight million and five hundred and eleven million
- 21:48Speaker 7: dollars since initially being said two hundred million in twenty
- 21:52Speaker 7: twenty two. It works out to more than six thousand,
- 21:54Speaker 7: six hundred dollars per household and was initially planned to
- 21:58Speaker 7: be paid for by a targeted rate over the third years.
- 22:00Speaker 7: Council is now exploring other funding options, including taking on
- 22:04Speaker 7: more debt.
- 22:05Speaker 2: How's the weather.
- 22:07Speaker 7: It's fine with morning frost, northerlies and a higher fourteen degrees.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Nice one Coaudia, Thank you, Laudia. Oneil with our willing
- 22:12Speaker 2: to news this morning. And Neva is in our Auckland studio, Neva,
- 22:15Speaker 2: good morning, morning right cracking down Auckland Council cracking down
- 22:20Speaker 2: on dog owners, I hope not me.
- 22:23Speaker 13: Is your dog a fighter?
- 22:24Speaker 2: No? No, she wouldn't, dare.
- 22:27Speaker 13: Yes, I've seen photos of your little weak dog.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Dear.
- 22:29Speaker 2: What's your name? Fanny?
- 22:31Speaker 12: Fanny? Love it?
- 22:32Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 22:33Speaker 13: Good on Fanny. Well no this isn't about Fanny, but yes,
- 22:37Speaker 13: we can tell you that the Organd Council has made
- 22:40Speaker 13: six hundred and eleven prosecutions. Now this is since twenty twenty,
- 22:44Speaker 13: targeting owners with dogs that have seriously injured people or
- 22:46Speaker 13: other animals. Now, nearly three thousand dog attacks and over
- 22:50Speaker 13: fifteen thousand cases of roaming dogs they've been reported in Auckland.
- 22:54Speaker 13: This is over the last five actual years, so that's
- 22:56Speaker 13: quite a few. So this is this is good though,
- 22:58Speaker 13: over this crackdown. Robert Irvine, he's the council's general manager.
- 23:02Speaker 13: He's saying nearly thirteen hundred of these. So that's of
- 23:06Speaker 13: the dog intakes. Of the three thousand we're on people
- 23:09Speaker 13: for goodness sake, that's based on what they're reporting. But
- 23:14Speaker 13: you know, he reckons the real number will be a.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Lot more more and you just don't report it.
- 23:18Speaker 13: Well, that's right, especially in what is it you know,
- 23:20Speaker 13: West Auckland. Well it's all over really as South Auckland.
- 23:23Speaker 6: You know.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Wayne Brown's quite ferocious. What if we got him
- 23:26Speaker 2: to go and bark back at you know, b back
- 23:28Speaker 2: at the dogs, send him out there, I think that'd
- 23:31Speaker 2: be quite affect I think it would. He's not willing
- 23:35Speaker 2: to debate anyone. Have you seen that. Yes, no, not
- 23:38Speaker 2: going to debate.
- 23:38Speaker 13: The Is he talking to you?
- 23:40Speaker 3: No?
- 23:40Speaker 2: No, Well there's there's talk of potentially a debate being held,
- 23:45Speaker 2: but I'm not sure that.
- 23:46Speaker 13: He's you'd be good with him, you'd ask to ask
- 23:50Speaker 13: hard questions about the dogs. Keep it funny.
- 23:54Speaker 2: How's the weather fine?
- 23:55Speaker 13: But the areas of early fog, I said, frog out
- 23:58Speaker 13: there in the news of early fog and frost. Today's
- 24:00Speaker 13: igh fifteen?
- 24:01Speaker 2: All right, neither aight. We got there Friday morning, eighteen
- 24:05Speaker 2: away from six on News Talk ZBB. Lots of people
- 24:09Speaker 2: texting in about the dog. Now the dog's name, It
- 24:11Speaker 2: was just a I don't know why we called the
- 24:13Speaker 2: dog Fanny. I guess with two blokes in the house,
- 24:16Speaker 2: we thought there should be one at home. News talks Hebb.
- 24:19Speaker 2: It is quarter to six. Great to have your company
- 24:22Speaker 2: this morning. We'll get to Alaska shortly on the Trump
- 24:24Speaker 2: Putin meeting. First we're heading to our UK europe correspondent
- 24:30Speaker 2: Vincent mcavniy, who's with us. Vincent, Good morning. Now we
- 24:35Speaker 2: have a separate meeting taking place. This is Zelensky and
- 24:38Speaker 2: Starmer meeting at Downing Street ahead of Trump Putin meeting.
- 24:41Speaker 2: What are they talking about.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. Zelenski has on a mini tour. He
- 24:46Speaker 3: was in Berlin yesterday and did a telephone off lots
- 24:49Speaker 3: of European leaders and President Trump as well ahead of
- 24:52Speaker 3: that Alaska meeting. Today he was in London going into
- 24:56Speaker 3: Number ten Downing Street and whilst we didn't hear directly
- 24:59Speaker 3: from him, all the Prime Minister to Kirs Starmer, this
- 25:03Speaker 3: was a big show of diplomatic support from Britain prime ministers.
- 25:09Speaker 3: He came out and greeted Lenski, giving him a big hug.
- 25:12Speaker 3: They went in taught for a round an hour and
- 25:15Speaker 3: normally when a leader leaves they'll just exit Downing Street themselves,
- 25:18Speaker 3: get traded in their car and go. But actually the
- 25:20Speaker 3: Kiir Starmer came out. Lensky didn't answer any of the
- 25:24Speaker 3: questions being yelled at them, but sort of mister Lensky
- 25:27Speaker 3: wave mister Starmer waved him off and we had statements
- 25:30Speaker 3: since saying that they are powered, they have a powerful
- 25:33Speaker 3: sense of unity and a strong result just enough. They're
- 25:39Speaker 3: just hoping to play things out as carefully well.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Robie, we'll have to leave Vincent there on Fred Vincent
- 25:45Speaker 2: mcavini are UK. You're correspondent with US, but on a
- 25:47Speaker 2: bit of a dodgy line. This morning, thirteen minutes away
- 25:49Speaker 2: from six quick update for you, this is on New
- 25:53Speaker 2: Zealand now joining well potentially joining other states and recognizing
- 25:58Speaker 2: the state of Palestine. The Yussie is saying they're going
- 26:00Speaker 2: to do it come Hallow high Water in September, and
- 26:04Speaker 2: a couple of other states doing that as well, including
- 26:06Speaker 2: the UK. So we are considering doing that. We'll make
- 26:08Speaker 2: a decision over the next month. And the United Nations
- 26:11Speaker 2: has come out and said that just just be careful.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I mean, it is a good thing to recognize the
- 26:16Speaker 2: state of Palestine, obviously that would be the UN's position,
- 26:19Speaker 2: but just be careful that you don't let that distract
- 26:22Speaker 2: from the real issue, which is the starving children and
- 26:26Speaker 2: families in Gaza. So they have said that prolonged debate
- 26:31Speaker 2: around you know, Palestinian statehood has so far yielded zero
- 26:35Speaker 2: political progress. The illegal settlements and occupied territories are still progressing.
- 26:40Speaker 2: So it's not a be all, end all band aid solution.
- 26:43Speaker 2: It's eighteen sorry, twelve minutes away from six. Now all
- 26:48Speaker 2: eyes on Alaska, as we said, as Trump prepares to
- 26:50Speaker 2: meet with putin. Trump says, there's a twenty five percent chance,
- 26:54Speaker 2: just to twenty five percent chances meeting will end in failure.
- 26:57Speaker 2: But will you be able to get a cease fire
- 26:59Speaker 2: across the line? Is that even the goal of this
- 27:02Speaker 2: first meeting. Tony Waterman is US correspondent, feature story and
- 27:05Speaker 2: news in Alaska for US this morning. Tony, Welcome to
- 27:08Speaker 2: the show. First of all, what's it like there right now?
- 27:14Speaker 4: Well, there's a lot of media, as you would imagine
- 27:17Speaker 4: here in Anchorage, a lot of people waiting outside the
- 27:20Speaker 4: Air Force base where these talks are going to be
- 27:22Speaker 4: taking place on Friday. I was downtown in Anchorage last
- 27:27Speaker 4: evening and there's just a lot of buzz. People are
- 27:30Speaker 4: excited that this meeting is taking place here. It kind
- 27:33Speaker 4: of is this prominence of Alaska hosting these types of
- 27:37Speaker 4: very important diplomatic get togethers that they have really a
- 27:40Speaker 4: long history of doing. And don't forget that Alaska at
- 27:44Speaker 4: its closest point is just about eighty eight kilometers away
- 27:47Speaker 4: from Russia, so it's the closest US state to Moscow
- 27:53Speaker 4: or to Russia. And for Trump, it seems that this
- 27:58Speaker 4: made sense to him to have this meeting here at
- 28:00Speaker 4: the Elmendorff Richardson Air Force Base, and.
- 28:04Speaker 2: We are hearing from some of Potion's paper when the
- 28:07Speaker 2: Kremlin that this is his focus is going to be
- 28:10Speaker 2: very much economic. He's going to try and play to
- 28:13Speaker 2: Trump's you know, business ecumen and come with a couple
- 28:17Speaker 2: of economic advisors. His finance ministers going what can we
- 28:21Speaker 2: rate into that.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Well, there's reports that Trump himself is going to put
- 28:28Speaker 4: forward some sort of economic incentive package to Putin, So
- 28:31Speaker 4: that may be why Putin is bringing those economic advisors,
- 28:35Speaker 4: and he probably has a couple of things up his
- 28:37Speaker 4: sleeve as well to kind of tap into Trump's feeling
- 28:43Speaker 4: that he is, you know, this big business man. But
- 28:45Speaker 4: the Telegraph is reporting that Trump is considering granting Russia
- 28:50Speaker 4: access to Alaskan natural resources and lifting some of these
- 28:55Speaker 4: sanctions on the Russian aviation sector, also potentially allowing Russia
- 28:59Speaker 4: to access rare earth minerals in the territories that it
- 29:04Speaker 4: already occupies. In Ukraine, so Ukraine has these vast mineral reserves,
- 29:09Speaker 4: lithium in particular, which is used in rechargeable batteries. Trump
- 29:12Speaker 4: himself struck a deal with Ukraine in a mineral's agreement
- 29:16Speaker 4: just a couple of months ago, giving Washington access to
- 29:19Speaker 4: these mineral wealth. And also there's talk that Trump is
- 29:24Speaker 4: considering allowing Russia to develop these natural resources in the
- 29:27Speaker 4: Bearing Strait. This is that a very narrow body of
- 29:31Speaker 4: water that separates Alaska from Russia, and it's believed that
- 29:35Speaker 4: thirteen percent of the world's oil reserves actually resides in there.
- 29:39Speaker 4: So this is an incentive for Putin to in Trump's mind,
- 29:44Speaker 4: take these negotiations very seriously, particularly since the Russian economy
- 29:48Speaker 4: has been so decimated because of sanctions. But it also
- 29:52Speaker 4: again appeals to Trump as a businessman.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Tony Trump has told about sickened a very quick sickend mache.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Are people they're expecting that it could actually happen, you know,
- 30:03Speaker 2: all in one go.
- 30:06Speaker 4: No, that's not the expectation on the ground that this
- 30:09Speaker 4: would come immediately after. I mean, Trump is going to
- 30:12Speaker 4: fly in on Friday and fly out on Friday. This
- 30:14Speaker 4: is a very fast turnaround for him. But he said
- 30:19Speaker 4: that if these talks do go well, that he would
- 30:22Speaker 4: like to broker a second meeting very soon between the
- 30:26Speaker 4: Ukrainian President Vlodimar Zelenki, who of course is not invited
- 30:29Speaker 4: to these talks taking place on Friday and with Putin,
- 30:33Speaker 4: and Trump said, if they want me there, I'll be there.
- 30:36Speaker 4: But his real goal here is to try to get
- 30:39Speaker 4: some sort of ceasefire in place that paves the way
- 30:43Speaker 4: for a permanent peace deal. But as we have come
- 30:47Speaker 4: very close to this meeting, Trump and his team are
- 30:50Speaker 4: continuously trying to tamper down expectations. They're calling it now
- 30:54Speaker 4: a listening exercise that Trump is going to go into
- 30:56Speaker 4: the room. He's going to really try to feel out
- 30:58Speaker 4: Putin and see if he's serious. And if he's not serious,
- 31:01Speaker 4: Trump says that he's going to impose very severe consequences.
- 31:05Speaker 4: He hasn't said exactly what those consequences will be, and
- 31:09Speaker 4: of course he has threatened this kind of stuff in
- 31:11Speaker 4: the past and has never followed through. But the goal
- 31:13Speaker 4: here is to kind of get this process underway.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Tony, appreciate your analysis this morning. Tony Waterman, us correspondent
- 31:20Speaker 2: in Alaska for US Speature Story News. It's eight to
- 31:22Speaker 2: six on your Friday morning. Mike's in the studio with us.

- 31:46Speaker 14: don't look at mounded by gormous morons who live in swill.
- 31:50Speaker 14: And so you know, tell the old Dyson out.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Do I ever lave?
- 31:54Speaker 14: You're you're you're, You're okay but not great. If you
- 31:57Speaker 14: want to, you.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Can you tell me what exactly I'm doing wrong.
- 32:00Speaker 14: You're a bit schamblick, to be honest, I mean, you're inconsistent.
- 32:03Speaker 14: So it's a good question you ask, and I'm glad
- 32:05Speaker 14: we've got some time to explore it.
- 32:07Speaker 2: So what you I mean You're.
- 32:09Speaker 14: Nowhere near as bad as say those clowns in the afternoon.
- 32:13Speaker 14: They're shocking. But what you do is some days you're
- 32:16Speaker 14: very good, and I think good is onto it.
- 32:18Speaker 2: But what do you mean good? Other days?
- 32:19Speaker 14: We was some days the rubbish. Men's just a bit
- 32:21Speaker 14: full of I mean, your preparation varies. I don't know
- 32:24Speaker 14: if your audience understands this, but some days your preparations lacking,
- 32:28Speaker 14: and I was much rubbish in It's been a light show.
- 32:32Speaker 2: The preparations are always consistent.
- 32:34Speaker 14: Well, certainly not in the terms of paper.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Do you know what's happening?
- 32:37Speaker 14: Pens sumps under the shelf?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Do you know what The main complaint I thought you
- 32:44Speaker 2: would raise is that I've got long legs and my knees.
- 32:47Speaker 2: You do that?
- 32:48Speaker 14: Yes, screen screens full of disaster on the screens. I'm
- 32:52Speaker 14: under there. Someone's gone under the glass screen there and
- 32:55Speaker 14: fingered the glass screen. Look at look at the prints
- 32:57Speaker 14: all over. It's shocking.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And that'll be a tech person.
- 33:03Speaker 14: No, no, no, it won't be a tech person fixing,
- 33:04Speaker 14: because no tech person fixing anything.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Well, do you know what they've left? Fingerprints? You can
- 33:08Speaker 2: literally find out.
- 33:10Speaker 14: I'm gonna have to because I'm under there with the
- 33:12Speaker 14: G twenty spraying upside down.
- 33:15Speaker 2: There's small fingers, somebody with a small thumb around the office.
- 33:21Speaker 14: I reckon, that's Matt, don't you Small fingered Matt.
- 33:25Speaker 2: That's what we call it.
- 33:28Speaker 14: Anyway, we got some Richie Barnett on the Warriors big
- 33:32Speaker 14: game tonight, by the way, because we can leap from
- 33:34Speaker 14: the Panthers because the Panthers lost last night. We're back
- 33:36Speaker 14: back in the top four, so that's exciting. Will Jordan,
- 33:39Speaker 14: also out of Argentina.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Great. All right, he was good yesterday. Actually I saw
- 33:44Speaker 2: his in the press conference. All right, have a great
