- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he said unto them, Be not affrighted.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified. He is risen.
- 0:11Speaker 1: He is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mark 16.6 Thank you, God, that through your promise in
- 0:21Speaker 1: the garden, we were given new life in Jesus. Even
- 0:27Speaker 1: though his body was bruised by the crucifixion, His act
- 0:31Speaker 1: of resurrection crushed the head of the serpent Satan forever.
- 0:37Speaker 1: For in doing so, you took the power away from
- 0:40Speaker 1: sin and death, Jesus. When I am tempted to go
- 0:45Speaker 1: back to the sins of my past, remind me, Holy Spirit,
- 0:50Speaker 1: that they are not there. Remind me that through the death, burial,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and resurrection of Jesus, my sins were washed away by
- 0:59Speaker 1: the blood of the Lamb. Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus, that
- 1:06Speaker 1: through your sacrifice I have new life and new power.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Thank you, Lord, that the stone was rolled away and
- 1:15Speaker 1: that the tomb is empty. I choose to celebrate because
- 1:20Speaker 1: an empty tomb means an occupied throne ready for me
- 1:26Speaker 1: to approach, to tap into the greatest power, provision, and love.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I've ever known. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thanks for making
- 1:41Speaker 1: prayer a priority in your life. To hear the Bible
- 1:45Speaker 1: come to life, stay tuned for the Bible in a Year.

- 1:59Speaker 2: The Resurrection In our last story, we learned about the
- 2:03Speaker 2: death of Jesus on a cross and the offering up
- 2:06Speaker 2: of his life for the sins of humanity. After his death,
- 2:10Speaker 2: he was placed and buried in the tomb of a
- 2:12Speaker 2: man named Joseph. In this story, we will learn about
- 2:16Speaker 2: the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:27Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I want you to know that I would absolutely love
- 2:34Speaker 3: to send you my daily devotional that will give you
- 2:37Speaker 3: fresh encouragement every single morning and day. From the moment
- 2:42Speaker 3: we wake up to the moment our head finally hits
- 2:45Speaker 3: the pillow, there are thousands of things demanding our attention.
- 2:50Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 2:52Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 2:55Speaker 3: truth in God's word. That's why I want to help
- 2:58Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing
- 3:03Speaker 3: word by sending you my free daily email devotional, PowerPoint Today.

- 3:14Speaker 3: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In yesterday's reading, we heard how Jesus
- 3:22Speaker 3: went to the cross, suffered, and died there at Calvary
- 3:26Speaker 3: for our sins. His physical pain was unimaginable, but the
- 3:31Speaker 3: pain of separation from the Heavenly Father was even greater,
- 3:35Speaker 3: as the one who was sinless now bears our sins.
- 3:39Speaker 3: The Father, God Himself, turned His back upon His darling
- 3:42Speaker 3: Son as the sins of the world were placed on Him.
- 3:45Speaker 3: The wrath of God came upon Jesus that day, And
- 3:49Speaker 3: Christ was judged for our sins. He bore the weight
- 3:52Speaker 3: of the world. And yet in that sacrifice, the justice
- 3:56Speaker 3: of God himself was satisfied so that we now can
- 3:59Speaker 3: have a relationship with God. That relationship with God is
- 4:03Speaker 3: made possible for what we read about today. And that
- 4:07Speaker 3: is that Jesus is alive because he came out of
- 4:10Speaker 3: the grave. The resurrection is our subject. So let's listen now.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Christ's death had caused the earth itself to cry out
- 4:21Speaker 2: in mourning. His disciples hiding and alone mimicked the earth
- 4:25Speaker 2: in sorrow. Though the morning sun had come the world
- 4:30Speaker 2: still felt dark. A fear and trembling came over all
- 4:34Speaker 2: that were once loyal to Jesus. Would they do to
- 4:38Speaker 2: them what they did to Jesus? In fear of their
- 4:41Speaker 2: lives and embarrassment of their cowardice the disciples hid themselves away.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Those who had conspired to kill Jesus suddenly had felt
- 4:50Speaker 2: an uneasiness bubble up in them. The day after Jesus' crucifixion,
- 4:56Speaker 2: they had come to Pilate and said to him, This
- 4:58Speaker 2: man we have put to death once said that he
- 5:01Speaker 2: would be raised again on the third day. We must
- 5:04Speaker 2: have guards around the tomb lest his disciples take his
- 5:07Speaker 2: body and claim he was risen from the dead. Pilate
- 5:11Speaker 2: heard what the Pharisees said and agreed. Send guards to
- 5:15Speaker 2: make sure the tomb is buried and sealed. Post guards
- 5:18Speaker 2: in front of the tomb to make sure the disciples
- 5:21Speaker 2: do not attempt to steal Jesus' body. On the third day,
- 5:25Speaker 2: in the cool of the morning, Mary Magdalene and Mary
- 5:28Speaker 2: the mother of James left to go visit the tomb
- 5:31Speaker 2: where Jesus had laid. They held spices and flowers to
- 5:34Speaker 2: lay beside the entrance of the tomb. Approaching the tomb,
- 5:38Speaker 2: their footsteps were interrupted by the shaking of the earth
- 5:41Speaker 2: beneath them. A bright light flashed before them, and the
- 5:45Speaker 2: guards beside the tomb fell to the ground motionless. The
- 5:49Speaker 2: two women opened their eyes to the sight of an
- 5:51Speaker 2: angel sitting beside Jesus' tomb. The stone that once sealed
- 5:56Speaker 2: it was rolled away. Looking at the women with a
- 5:59Speaker 2: face shining brighter than the sun, the angel said, Why
- 6:03Speaker 2: do you seek the living among the dead? He is
- 6:06Speaker 2: not here. He has risen as he said he would.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Now go quickly and tell his disciples. As the two
- 6:14Speaker 2: women fled to go tell the others, they were met
- 6:17Speaker 2: on the road by a man. Flustered and confused, they
- 6:20Speaker 2: could barely pay any attention. Greetings, the man said. He
- 6:25Speaker 2: spoke to them with a familiar and gentle tone. They
- 6:28Speaker 2: looked up to him and discovered it was him. He
- 6:33Speaker 2: who was hung bloodied and demolished on the cross stood
- 6:35Speaker 2: before them. No words or expressions could quite capture their elation,
- 6:40Speaker 2: so they simply clung to him. as Jacob once did
- 6:43Speaker 2: on the hill generations ago. They too were trembling with joy, fear,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and confusion. Do not be afraid, nor should you cling
- 6:53Speaker 2: to me too long, Jesus said. Quick, go and tell
- 6:57Speaker 2: my brothers to meet me in Galilee. There they will
- 7:00Speaker 2: see me. The women did as they were told and
- 7:03Speaker 2: immediately ran to the disciples. The two brought word to
- 7:08Speaker 2: Peter and John. Though they doubted, they wasted no time.
- 7:12Speaker 2: fleeing towards the garden where Jesus was buried so they
- 7:15Speaker 2: could see it for themselves. John, the youngest of the disciples,
- 7:20Speaker 2: ran the fastest, determined to see his king once again.
- 7:24Speaker 2: He ran inside, picked up the pieces of cloth that
- 7:27Speaker 2: once wrapped his Messiah, and welled up with tears. The
- 7:31Speaker 2: cloths were lying there alone on the stone, but his
- 7:35Speaker 2: king was gone. As the two Marys had said, the
- 7:39Speaker 2: tomb was empty, and joy and anticipation erupted in both
- 7:43Speaker 2: of them. The darkness over the face of the earth
- 7:46Speaker 2: was lifted, and light was restored to the hearts of
- 7:49Speaker 2: those who followed Jesus. The next chapter of the disciples'
- 7:53Speaker 2: lives would be marked with more wonder and exploits than
- 7:57Speaker 2: their imaginations could ever predict. The king had risen, and
- 8:01Speaker 2: the only thing remaining in the tomb were the sins
- 8:03Speaker 2: of mankind he had put to death on the cross.
- 8:07Speaker 2: God once promised in the Garden of Eden that the
- 8:10Speaker 2: serpent would bruise the heel of a promised son, yet
- 8:14Speaker 2: he would crush his head. Jesus' scars from crucifixion remained.
- 8:19Speaker 2: He was, in fact, bruised by evil. Yet the head
- 8:23Speaker 2: of the serpent, the enemy, and all his exploits were
- 8:27Speaker 2: crushed under the heel of the promised Messiah. On that cross,
- 8:31Speaker 2: the sins of humanity and all that plagued the hearts
- 8:35Speaker 2: of men were crushed. And the Son of God proved
- 8:39Speaker 2: that even death has no power over him, nor would
- 8:43Speaker 2: it have power over all those that followed him after. Amen.
- 8:52Speaker 3: In today's scripture, the dark shadow of grief and fear
- 8:55Speaker 3: hang over the entire world, and none are feeling it
- 8:58Speaker 3: more powerfully than the disciples and those who follow Jesus
- 9:02Speaker 3: to the end. For them, it seemed that all hope
- 9:06Speaker 3: is lost. Though Jesus had told them he would die
- 9:09Speaker 3: and be raised again, it seemed an impossibility at this point.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Two days had already passed, and still Jesus was behind
- 9:17Speaker 3: a heavy stone in a tomb. Those who had orchestrated
- 9:21Speaker 3: this unjust execution and crucifixion had heard about Jesus' claims
- 9:26Speaker 3: that after three days he would rise again, so they
- 9:29Speaker 3: arranged for Jesus' tomb to be guarded by Roman soldiers
- 9:33Speaker 3: so that none of his followers could break in and
- 9:35Speaker 3: steal the body and claim a resurrection. I can only
- 9:39Speaker 3: imagine the sorrow and terror of those who had followed Jesus.
- 9:43Speaker 3: If their master had been killed, surely they would be
- 9:46Speaker 3: in grave danger. But more than that, their dearest friend
- 9:50Speaker 3: and teacher and Messiah, the one that they had trusted
- 9:53Speaker 3: and loved like no one else, was gone. They were
- 9:56Speaker 3: soon to experience in a very real way what Psalm
- 9:59Speaker 3: 30 taught them, that though sorrow may last through the night,
- 10:03Speaker 3: joy comes in the morning. For on the morning of
- 10:06Speaker 3: the third day, everything was going to change forever. On
- 10:11Speaker 3: that morning, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James,
- 10:14Speaker 3: made their way to the tomb, bringing spices to anoint
- 10:17Speaker 3: the body of Jesus and because they did not expect
- 10:20Speaker 3: that he would actually rise from the dead as he
- 10:23Speaker 3: promised he would. Of course, they had no idea how
- 10:26Speaker 3: they would move the heavy stone that blocked the access
- 10:29Speaker 3: to the body, but they went anyway, desperate, desiring to
- 10:33Speaker 3: show honor to their beloved friend. What a surprise they
- 10:38Speaker 3: were in for. When they got to the place where
- 10:40Speaker 3: Jesus was laid to rest, the large stone had already
- 10:43Speaker 3: been rolled away. When they entered the tomb, they did
- 10:46Speaker 3: not find the Lord's body. No, they encountered two men
- 10:49Speaker 3: dressed in sparkling white robes, angel beings. They were understandably afraid,
- 10:55Speaker 3: but the angel spoke to them reassuringly, and we hear
- 10:57Speaker 3: their words in Luke 24, verses 6 to 7. He
- 11:01Speaker 3: is not here, but he is risen. Remember how he
- 11:05Speaker 3: told you while he was still in Galilee that the
- 11:07Speaker 3: Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of
- 11:10Speaker 3: sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Then they remembered what Jesus had promised them, and they
- 11:19Speaker 3: ran to tell the others the good news. The greatest
- 11:21Speaker 3: good news the world has ever heard came out of
- 11:24Speaker 3: an empty tomb in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. Jesus had
- 11:29Speaker 3: risen just as he said he would. Everything Jesus said,
- 11:34Speaker 3: everything Jesus did, everything about Jesus hinges on this miracle
- 11:40Speaker 3: of the resurrection. If he never rose from the dead,
- 11:43Speaker 3: if the tomb is not empty that day, then Jesus
- 11:46Speaker 3: was just a compelling speaker, a magnetic personality, a religious
- 11:50Speaker 3: teacher that led people astray. But if Jesus did in
- 11:54Speaker 3: fact conquer death and rise from the grave, then he
- 11:57Speaker 3: truly is the Savior of the world, the Son of God,
- 12:00Speaker 3: perfect God and perfect man, alive forevermore. His death accomplished
- 12:04Speaker 3: what he said it would, the forgiveness of our sins.
- 12:08Speaker 3: And with his resurrection, he removed the sting of death,
- 12:11Speaker 3: eternal separation from God, and made a way for those
- 12:14Speaker 3: who follow him to live forever in the presence of God.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Jesus had said in John 14, 6, I am the
- 12:22Speaker 3: way and the truth and the life, and no one
- 12:24Speaker 3: comes to the Father but by me. Jesus made a way,
- 12:28Speaker 3: and it went through an empty tomb. He rose from
- 12:30Speaker 3: the grave, and now we can trust him with our lives.
- 12:35Speaker 3: And how do we know that he rose from the dead?
- 12:37Speaker 3: Because of the many witnesses that saw him, starting with
- 12:40Speaker 3: these two women, who rushed to tell others that they
- 12:43Speaker 3: had encountered the risen Christ. They embraced him, joy like
- 12:47Speaker 3: they had never known filling their hearts. And they couldn't
- 12:50Speaker 3: wait to tell the disciples the amazing news. When Peter
- 12:54Speaker 3: and John heard, they were doubtful. So they ran to
- 12:56Speaker 3: the tomb and found it empty, except for the burial
- 12:59Speaker 3: cloths Jesus had been wrapped in, which were folded neatly
- 13:03Speaker 3: at the tomb. This was not a grave robbery. This
- 13:06Speaker 3: was a resurrection. There are many evidences for the resurrection
- 13:10Speaker 3: of Jesus Christ. We can believe in the resurrection, but
- 13:14Speaker 3: the greatest evidence of all is the changed lives of
- 13:17Speaker 3: the disciples whose world was turned upside down at the cross,
- 13:21Speaker 3: but right side up at the resurrection. The one who
- 13:25Speaker 3: had commanded the lame to walk, the sick to be healed,
- 13:27Speaker 3: and the dead to rise had walked right out of
- 13:30Speaker 3: his tomb. He is alive. Christ is alive. He did
- 13:35Speaker 3: not need someone else to command him to rise, for
- 13:37Speaker 3: he has power over sin, death, hell, and the grave.
- 13:42Speaker 3: And through him, Because of his cross and resurrection, we
- 13:46Speaker 3: can have the forgiveness of our sins and eternal life.
- 13:50Speaker 3: This is why the gospel is such good news that
- 13:53Speaker 3: the whole world needs to hear. Would you pray with me?
- 13:58Speaker 3: If you've never received Jesus, the living Lord, as your
- 14:00Speaker 3: Savior and your God, you can trust him right now
- 14:04Speaker 3: by simply breathing this prayer. Lord Jesus, I know that
- 14:07Speaker 3: I have sinned and broken your commandments, but I believe
- 14:10Speaker 3: you died to save me, and so I do trust
- 14:13Speaker 3: you as my Lord and Savior. I will follow you
- 14:16Speaker 3: all the days of my life in the power of
- 14:18Speaker 3: your Spirit, and when you come for me, I'll be
- 14:22Speaker 3: ready because I've put my faith and trust in you.
- 14:26Speaker 3: In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening to today's
