- 0:00So why is autism and musical talent so commonly linked
- 0:05together? In this video, I'm breaking
- 0:07everything down and talking about just that.
- 0:17Guys, welcome back to the aspy world.
- 0:19What's going on? My name is Dan, I have autism,
- 0:21ADHDOCD and dyslexia, and I make weekly videos all about this
- 0:25kind of stuff. So if you're new around here and
- 0:27you'd like to learn more, remember to hit that subscribe
- 0:28button by clicking that notification bell down below.
- 0:30If you're watching over on Facebook, we should to give this
- 0:32page a follow. And if you're watching on
- 0:34Instagram, make sure to follow this account for more autism
- 0:36content. Guys, what's going on?
- 0:38Welcome back to the aspy world, the place where we think
- 0:40differently daily. What's going on?
- 0:42Different thinkers. Boom.
- 0:43Good to have you here. Lovely to have you here.
- 0:45And if you haven't already, I keep saying it if you watch all
- 0:48my videos. Probably sick of me saying this,
- 0:49but if you want to download my free Autism Life Hacks PDF book,
- 0:52make sure to go to autismhacks.net right now and
- 0:55download my free Autism Life Hacks book just because you're
- 0:57awesome. Okay guys.
- 0:59So I want to do this video on autism and musical talent
- 1:02because basically like it fascinated me.
- 1:04I am a musician. I'm a multi musician.
- 1:06If you don't already know, I play in a band called Straight
- 1:08Jacket Legends and I play bass and I sing in that band, but I
- 1:10also play guitar and drums and violin and cello and piano and I
- 1:14play all these instruments. I'm self-taught because I have a
- 1:16relationship with music and that relationship stems from vast
- 1:20amounts of different reasons. Now a lot of people on the
- 1:23autism spectrum are musicians and a lot of very talented
- 1:26musicians in the music industry are on the autism spectrum.
- 1:29So I wanted to know why. You know what?
- 1:32What is this relationship? And I remember I met an autistic
- 1:36savant who was also blind when I was doing a show.
- 1:39He was closing the, the, the show when I was doing a keynote
- 1:43and he actually was just a fantastic pianist.
- 1:46And it really got me thinking. I was like, wow, this guy is
- 1:48amazing. And you know, he's on the
- 1:51spectrum. And like, what relationship does
- 1:52his condition have with music? Like why is music so
- 1:56interesting? So at first I was like, it has
- 1:59to be patterns, right? It just has to be like patterns
- 2:01of things that they just like, you know, we all like patterns.
- 2:04I like routines and maybe music is repetitive patterns that
- 2:06people love, but it goes deeper than that.
- 2:08Yes, you know, learning structure and how instruments
- 2:12and chords are created is kind of a pattern and that's a lovely
- 2:15pattern and it has a relationship which I love doing.
- 2:18But in terms of why it has such a deeper level, it's all about
- 2:22mathematics. Now, I didn't really think about
- 2:24this until I was applying to university and my the the person
- 2:28who was helping, the tutor who was helping me, kind of like
- 2:30through my application said I wanted to do chemistry right.
- 2:33And chemistry is all mathematics based and I had no previous kind
- 2:36of science education so I was like really going off on a whim
- 2:39here. So in my personal statement to
- 2:41the university by the way, I did get that placement and I did do
- 2:45my degree which I have a degree in chemistry, which is crazy.
- 2:47I'm so proud of myself for doing it.
- 2:48So yeah, blow my own trumpet there.
- 2:50But when I was applying my tutor said why don't you say that you
- 2:54are a multi musician because music and mass are very much
- 2:57linked together and I was like okay and it worked.
- 3:00They really did go for it. Then I realized music and maths
- 3:04are very much linked together like Oh my goodness, because
- 3:07music is patterns of timing, signatures and you count when
- 3:11you play music. And I was like, Dang, this all
- 3:14makes sense. I love counting, I love numbers.
- 3:16I actually would do a degree in mathematics if I had time.
- 3:19But you know, I I think maths is such an interesting concept and
- 3:22and such a comfortable concept. I actually like being around
- 3:25numbers, as weird as that sounds.
- 3:27Actually all my clocks are like 24 hour clocks because I like
- 3:30the longer numbers, you know? But in terms of music, you're
- 3:34counting bars. You're creating a mathematical
- 3:38kind of pattern sequence in your head to create music, and then
- 3:42it made sense. This is why autism and musical
- 3:45talent comes hand in hand, because autistic people are
- 3:48generally aligned with the logical thinker type of brain,
- 3:51and that logical thinker type of brain is the type of brain that
- 3:54enjoys mathematics and numbers. And because the mathematics and
- 3:56numbers are related to music, it's kind of only fitting really
- 3:59that autistic people would be really interested in music and
- 4:02play instruments. This was kind of like the glass
- 4:04shattering moment for me. And I was like Oh my goodness,
- 4:06how did I not think about this before?
- 4:08But you know, music is no exception.
- 4:10Mathematics and sound are closely linked together.
- 4:13Also, music is sound waves and sound waves are mathematical
- 4:16kind of nodes and and troughs, you know.
- 4:18And and I think I I just love this.
- 4:20I love the fact that it's like that not.
- 4:22Are you a musical autistic person?
- 4:24Let me know in the comments down below.
- 4:26I'd love to know. Do you play an autistic?
- 4:29Do you play a musical instrument?
- 4:32Are you autistic? Let me know.
- 4:33I read every single comment. So yeah, it's never wasted.
- 4:36But this is fascinating and it fascinates me.
- 4:39And I just love to see, you know, how many more musicians
- 4:42out there are on the spectrum. And this would just be so
- 4:45interesting to see. I'm just really like, I don't
- 4:48know, just brighten up my day to just look at more autistic
- 4:51musicians. I just love that.
- 4:52I think it's great. I think you guys are great and
- 4:54thank you so much for watching this video.
- 4:56If you think this can help somebody or it's interesting,
- 4:58please share it on your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
- 5:00accounts if you have those and give this video a thumbs up if
- 5:03you enjoyed this one and I'll see you in the next one.
