Latest / The Rand Report: Sports / SEC-Big Ten Own the Playoff
Transcript
- 0:08The SEC and the Big 10 aren't sharing the future
- 0:11of college football. They're owning it and everybody
- 0:13else, they're negotiating for whatever is left.
- 0:16That's the real story today. Not the commissioner
- 0:19press conferences, not the polished talking points,
- 0:22not the annual promise that everybody has a chance
- 0:25because right now the gap is getting wider. Welcome
- 0:29to the RAND report. I'm Jim Rand. We don't chase
- 0:32headlines. We chase what the headlines actually
- 0:35mean. College football is on fire. The transfer
- 0:38portal is spinning. The NHL is separating contenders
- 0:41from pretenders. Let's get into it. First, the
- 0:45playoff picture isn't expanding. It's concentrating.
- 0:48The SEC and the Big Ten aren't just winning games.
- 0:51They're stockpiling talent. Look at recruiting.
- 0:54Look at the portal. Look at the offensive and
- 0:56defensive lines. Then watch what happens when
- 0:59those teams meet everyone else in December. Steven
- 1:02A. McAfee, Cowherd, different personalities,
- 1:05same conclusion. The power has shifted, and it
- 1:08isn't shifting back anytime soon. The comfortable
- 1:11take says playoff expansion fixed everything.
- 1:14More teams, more opportunity, more Cinderella
- 1:17stories, wrong! Expansion didn't create parody.
- 1:20It created margin for the elite. Now the blue
- 1:23bloods can survive an early stumble. and still
- 1:26be fresher, deeper, and more dangerous when the
- 1:28games actually matter. When a group of five program
- 1:32or even a middle -tier power conference team
- 1:34breaks through, everybody acts surprised. Don't.
- 1:38Those are great moments. But there's still exceptions.
- 1:40The television money, the recruiting footprint,
- 1:43the facilities, the NIL collectives that can
- 1:45actually close deals. Those advantages live in
- 1:48very specific zip codes, mostly SEC, mostly Big
- 1:52Ten. I want the sport to be competitive. I really
- 1:55do. But honesty matters more than wishful thinking.
- 1:58If your conference can't protect its recruiting
- 2:00classes, if it can't keep its best players through
- 2:03January, you're not building. You're surviving.
- 2:06Topic two, the transfer portal and NIL era. Let's
- 2:11stop pretending this is some inspirational empowerment
- 2:14story. This is roster volatility. Coaches sell
- 2:18a vision in June. By December, half the locker
- 2:21room is taking phone calls. Collectives raise
- 2:23another round of money. Agents make another round
- 2:26of promises. Fans get told it's just business.
- 2:30Fine. Business is business. Pretending it doesn't
- 2:33damage continuity? That's fantasy. You can't
- 2:36build offensive line chemistry when half the
- 2:38room might leave after one disappointing season.
- 2:41You can't establish leadership when the depth
- 2:44chart resets every winter. Culture doesn't survive
- 2:47on slogans. It survives on people who stay. The
- 2:51ACC and the Big 12 are living this every single
- 2:54offseason. Some schools are adapting. They're
- 2:57keeping key players, building relationships,
- 3:00creating reasons to stay. Others, they're trying
- 3:03to stop a flood with a wallet that's already
- 3:05empty. Here's the uncomfortable truth. Player
- 3:08movement isn't automatically noble. Sometimes
- 3:11it's just short -sighted. Sometimes it's impatience.
- 3:14Sometimes it's chasing promises that never materialize.
- 3:18And when programs celebrate every departure as
- 3:20if nothing was lost, they're lying to the players
- 3:23who stayed. Accountability still matters. Maybe
- 3:26now more than ever. Third, conference survival.
- 3:31College football isn't sentimental. It never
- 3:33has been. The money doesn't care about tradition.
- 3:37Television contracts don't care about history.
- 3:39Media leverage, scheduling power, playoff access,
- 3:42those are the new standings. The Big 12 has grit.
- 3:46The ACC still has respected brands. Neither currently
- 3:49controls the room. The SEC and the Big 10 do.
- 3:53The easy narrative says, realignment is over.
- 3:56Relax. Don't believe it. As long as television
- 3:59dollars keep growing, as long as playoff access
- 4:02remains unequal, as long as schools believe they
- 4:05can upgrade their future, the next wave is always
- 4:07one signature away. I respect programs that keep
- 4:11swinging. I respect coaches who tell recruits
- 4:13the truth instead of selling fantasy, but hope
- 4:16isn't a strategy. Winning is. Revenue is. Planning
- 4:20is. Quick shift, the NHL. While college football
- 4:24argues about hierarchy, the NHL keeps reminding
- 4:27everyone that every point matters, especially
- 4:30in the East. Every night feels heavy, every mistake
- 4:33gets punished. The stars are facing the only
- 4:36question that really counts. Can you carry your
- 4:38team night after night when the schedule gets
- 4:41ugly? Some are answering, others are disappearing
- 4:44behind carefully crafted explanations. Travel?
- 4:48Everybody travels. Back to backs? Everybody has
- 4:51them. The difference isn't the schedule. The
- 4:53difference is who finds another gear anyway.
- 4:56McDavid remains the standard, not because people
- 4:59like admitting it, because the results demand
- 5:02it. Everyone else is measured against that relentless
- 5:05standard. Standings don't lie. Possession numbers
- 5:08usually don't lie. A hot goalie for one week?
- 5:12That can lie. We're beyond projections now. earn
- 5:15your spot, or watch somebody else take it. Tie
- 5:18it together. Different leagues, same lesson.
- 5:21Dominance isn't built under the lights. It's
- 5:23built long before anyone is watching. The SEC
- 5:26and Big Ten are proving it in recruiting rooms.
- 5:29The transfer portal is exposing which programs
- 5:32actually built culture and which ones rented
- 5:34it. The NHL is exposing which stars elevate everyone
- 5:38around them when the margin disappears. Stop
- 5:41buying comfortable narratives. Parody isn't guaranteed.
- 5:45Opportunity isn't the same as readiness, and
- 5:48toughness still travels. That's the lens. Run
- 5:51every headline through it, every press conference,
- 5:54every highlight clip, every viral hot take, because
- 5:57the noise isn't slowing down. Our job is to stay
- 6:00sharper than the noise. This has been the Rand
- 6:03Report. I'm Jim Rand. Remember, less hype, more
- 6:07truth. Until next time, keep competing.
