Transcript
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm Jacob Charlton and I'm the vocalist of Someone Hill.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I'm Ethan McCann. I play guitar in Thornhill.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Beautiful, gentlemen, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Thanks for having us my pleasure.
- 0:38Speaker 4: So we're here to speak about the fact that Thornhill
- 0:40Speaker 4: release your third studio album, Bodies on April fourth, which
- 0:44Speaker 4: isn't too far away. Guys, how do you feeling nervous, excited, anxious, nonplast.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I think for the first time, we're properly excited. I
- 0:54Speaker 1: don't think I feel nervous this time. I think it's
- 0:57Speaker 1: just like ready for him to be out in her
- 1:00Speaker 1: for the first time, like feeling.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Excited and proud.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Yeah, he nim into it a bit more musically for us, guys,
- 1:08Speaker 4: and then what do you're actually going for sonically this time?
- 1:12Speaker 5: I think the first thing that we wanted to sort
- 1:13Speaker 5: of sit down to after Heroin was like we wanted
- 1:17Speaker 5: a lot more energy and a lot more peace in
- 1:19Speaker 5: the in the music. We found that when we took
- 1:21Speaker 5: Heroin to our live show, it felt like it was
- 1:24Speaker 5: kind of dragging at times. And because we started playing
- 1:27Speaker 5: heavy music when we were teenagers, we kind of missed
- 1:30Speaker 5: that energy and seeing that reaction in real time.
- 1:35Speaker 3: How did you actually go about doing that and making
- 1:37Speaker 3: that happen?
- 1:39Speaker 5: I think just a lot more focused on rhythm and
- 1:41Speaker 5: like drum beat, and like Jacob was listening to a
- 1:44Speaker 5: lot more like sort of pop and R and B,
- 1:46Speaker 5: R and B music around this time, so I think
- 1:49Speaker 5: there was even a lot more pace and sort of
- 1:50Speaker 5: his vocal patterns as opposed to our sort of long
- 1:52Speaker 5: stretched out chords and crooning sort of vocals from the
- 1:56Speaker 5: last album.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Nice and the press release says that contained some of
- 2:01Speaker 4: your well heaviest moments to date.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Would you agree with that statement?
- 2:06Speaker 2: I would, I would agree.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Yeah, Why Yeah?
- 2:16Speaker 1: I think I think Heroin was such a different approach
- 2:21Speaker 1: to the album before it that I think we started
- 2:25Speaker 1: to miss being the heavy band on a bill. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: think because we're still, you know, in the heavy music world.
- 2:31Speaker 1: We'd play a lot of heavy shows and we'd kind
- 2:33Speaker 1: of be the softer of the act, and I think
- 2:36Speaker 1: that was fun at the start, just because we felt
- 2:38Speaker 1: a bit uninspired by heavy music.
- 2:39Speaker 2: But by the end of it.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I think we were missing some of that heaviness or darkness,
- 2:45Speaker 1: so we really tried to bring it in with a
- 2:47Speaker 1: bit of a new flavor hopefully.
- 2:52Speaker 4: So you've released the single was Obsession, Morve, Silver, Swarm
- 2:55Speaker 4: and Tongues. So are they a good sonic representation of
- 2:58Speaker 4: what fans can expect? There are a few other layers
- 3:00Speaker 4: in there.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Oh, there's always layers, mate.
- 3:04Speaker 6: More.
- 3:05Speaker 5: There's definitely a few curve balls in there. I think
- 3:07Speaker 5: with singles, we try and pick them so you get
- 3:09Speaker 5: a little taste of everything, like it's a little it's
- 3:12Speaker 5: a little sample platter of the album. But there's always
- 3:14Speaker 5: going to be like a couple of cards up our sleeve.
- 3:16Speaker 5: I think I want to give everything away.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, We'll leave you with a bit of mysprey.
- 3:22Speaker 4: I won a my press yet, so we spoke about it.
- 3:26Speaker 4: You could previous album, Herold, which came out twenty twenty two,
- 3:29Speaker 4: and that was an a pronominated album and it went.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Down really well.
- 3:32Speaker 4: So when you approached this one, was attempting at or
- 3:34Speaker 4: to rehash that winning formula because you knew it worked
- 3:37Speaker 4: so well, or was it important for you to move
- 3:38Speaker 4: on from there?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Well, we didn't win anything, we got nominated. I think
- 3:44Speaker 2: we just got a good week. I think.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Most people hated that record, so I don't. I don't think, Oh, look,
- 3:51Speaker 1: we don't really think much. I think on purpose, because
- 3:55Speaker 1: the more thought you put into what you want from it,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I think, the less you're actually going to get out
- 3:59Speaker 1: of it. I think we just wanted to enjoy ourselves
- 4:03Speaker 1: and be what we could come up with without any expectation,
- 4:07Speaker 1: because we don't really I mean, your first listener is
- 4:10Speaker 1: always going to be yourself, and as long as you're
- 4:11Speaker 1: enjoying it, you'll find your people.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And that's one I found interesting. Guys.
- 4:16Speaker 4: There's a quide from the band in that press release
- 4:18Speaker 4: and said bodies marks the bold evolution in our ever
- 4:21Speaker 4: changing sound, like, can you elaborate on it more for us?
- 4:26Speaker 5: I think also to sort of elaborate on your last question.
- 4:28Speaker 5: At the same time, I think we never really like,
- 4:31Speaker 5: we never really try and compare what we're making to
- 4:34Speaker 5: what we have already done. We just kind of we
- 4:37Speaker 5: have this saying where we just kind of follow the endorphins.
- 4:39Speaker 5: It's never like, Okay, we've done this, now we need
- 4:41Speaker 5: to do this. It's just a matter of whatever we
- 4:43Speaker 5: feel like playing, whatever we feel like listening to, like
- 4:47Speaker 5: whatever you know, whatever brings those en dolphins.
- 4:52Speaker 3: That's nice.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Now, how would you say so because of you sort
- 4:55Speaker 4: of do change and you's have got a lot of
- 4:57Speaker 4: evolution in music, Like, how would you say that the
- 4:59Speaker 4: band has grown change musically over the course of the
- 5:02Speaker 4: Dark Pool to Heroin and Our Bodies.
- 5:07Speaker 2: That's a good question. Why don't you take that one?
- 5:09Speaker 5: Even I think, like I said, like our taste is
- 5:16Speaker 5: always changing, Like we always go through different phases of
- 5:19Speaker 5: viking different bands and different things in our music, and
- 5:24Speaker 5: I think that's just sort of apparent in our albums,
- 5:28Speaker 5: Like it wasn't a conscious decision for us to go
- 5:30Speaker 5: a bit lighter or a bit morechorousy with Heroin, it
- 5:32Speaker 5: was just like the sort of music we were listening
- 5:34Speaker 5: to at that time. And now with Bodies, it's like
- 5:37Speaker 5: we have been listening to more electronics, we have been
- 5:40Speaker 5: listening to sort of faster music, and that's just that's
- 5:43Speaker 5: what it sounds like to.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Us, I guess.
- 5:44Speaker 1: But at the same time, I think we also feel
- 5:49Speaker 1: it live in our own music of what we're missing
- 5:52Speaker 1: or what we'd prefer to play, because I think a
- 5:54Speaker 1: lot of the time the Heroin stuff might have been
- 5:57Speaker 1: a vibe, but it's a bit harder to train late live,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and I think we learn a lesson with each release,
- 6:03Speaker 1: in which with each song like Obsession was such a
- 6:06Speaker 1: good one to learn that we were like, oh yeah,
- 6:08Speaker 1: we can still play slow Shoe Gays, but it can
- 6:10Speaker 1: still have more attitude and more rhythmic movement to it,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and we can still feel fulfilled by that on stage.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So I think that's always going to be one of
- 6:19Speaker 1: those things as we learn in two or more.
- 6:22Speaker 4: And this is a bit of a two part question, guys,
- 6:23Speaker 4: but a lot of those lines like personally, how much
- 6:26Speaker 4: music for grace do you think thought Hill's got left
- 6:28Speaker 4: in you as a band. And secondly, we'll get to
- 6:30Speaker 4: the stage every where. He's like to sort of sit
- 6:32Speaker 4: down at his band and discuss which way you are
- 6:34Speaker 4: going because you sort of wanting a branch out in
- 6:37Speaker 4: so many directions.
- 6:37Speaker 6: I guess.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I think we'll go until we can't anymore.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I think, like we've said, follow the endorphins until there
- 6:46Speaker 1: aren't any Probably, I think.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I don't like putting too much weight on the future.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I think we'll just keep going as we as we
- 6:54Speaker 1: see it in front of us.
- 6:56Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 6:58Speaker 1: We're so close friends, that I think, you know, the
- 7:03Speaker 1: movement and the change is always very.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Verbally like talked about throughout.
- 7:10Speaker 1: The four of us, so I think everybody's always on
- 7:12Speaker 1: board with wherever we feel we're going to go together.
- 7:16Speaker 5: And also it never really takes any convincing, like because
- 7:18Speaker 5: Jacob said, because we are such close friends, we kind
- 7:21Speaker 5: of go through the different phases together, so like whenever
- 7:24Speaker 5: there's a new demo that sounds quite different, everybody's just
- 7:27Speaker 5: kind of on board from the get go, which is
- 7:29Speaker 5: why it's so exciting and so easy for us to
- 7:32Speaker 5: sort of try so many different things.
- 7:35Speaker 4: And you've got three album preview shows coming up as
- 7:38Speaker 4: well in Melbourne this Thursday March twenty seventh, Brisbane and
- 7:41Speaker 4: the twenty nine.
- 7:41Speaker 3: They're Sidney on the thirties. So personally, what exactly is
- 7:44Speaker 3: an album listening show? How does that work?
- 7:47Speaker 1: So we basically play the album in full and then
- 7:51Speaker 1: we sit down and do like a Q and A
- 7:54Speaker 1: at the end, just.
- 7:55Speaker 2: To like be what the first responses are.
- 7:58Speaker 1: We started it on the in cycle and I think
- 8:01Speaker 1: we really enjoyed it because it's just like a really
- 8:03Speaker 1: good way to kind of like give back to the
- 8:07Speaker 1: Australian scene, you know, all the love and support that
- 8:10Speaker 1: we've gotten, and it's like a cool, little exclusive.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Thing, and it's also cool to have live feedback.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It's cool for us to feel how it all plays
- 8:18Speaker 1: before we go do you know, our biggest headline international
- 8:23Speaker 1: tour ever. So I think it's just like an exciting
- 8:26Speaker 1: thing that we like to kind of involve everybody in.
- 8:30Speaker 4: And would you say something that's more for you guys
- 8:32Speaker 4: as a band, or it's more for the fans.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I think it's for us. I think they coexist, co exist.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I think it's it's good for everybody involved, hopefully if
- 8:41Speaker 1: we do it well.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's a nice way for the fans
- 8:45Speaker 5: to get like an inside scoop on the album, and
- 8:48Speaker 5: it's also a nice way for us to sort of
- 8:51Speaker 5: elaborate ourselves as opposed to you just hearing it for
- 8:54Speaker 5: the first time. It's like we sort of get to
- 8:55Speaker 5: explain the ins and outs a bit more so people
- 8:58Speaker 5: can sort of understand the full concept. And we're very
- 9:01Speaker 5: much about we Go, Go, Go Go. I was just
- 9:03Speaker 5: going to say that, like it benefits both of us
- 9:05Speaker 5: because we get to sort of portray that full picture
- 9:07Speaker 5: and fans get to fully hear that that they might
- 9:10Speaker 5: not otherwise, and it's good.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I think we always put it in the forefront of
- 9:15Speaker 1: this band, of like being as organically ourselves as possible,
- 9:19Speaker 1: because I think it's very easy to get wrapped up
- 9:22Speaker 1: in what we do, and I think the separation can
- 9:24Speaker 1: sometimes be very large, and I think it's just cool
- 9:28Speaker 1: that we can just be in a room and just
- 9:30Speaker 1: be a bunch of idiots just explaining why.
- 9:32Speaker 2: We love music and why we made decisions and be,
- 9:36Speaker 2: you know, so one on one.
- 9:37Speaker 1: With everybody, because that's how you know, that's how a
- 9:40Speaker 1: band should be as much as possible.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I think we care about that a lot.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Sure, Now you mentioned your biggest international tortured date, gys.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Tell us about that America Baby USA?
- 9:53Speaker 3: No, I see? Was it a headline to on them? Yeah,
- 9:56Speaker 3: it's when you go over.
- 9:57Speaker 2: There on the eight oh seventh, eighth of April.
- 10:04Speaker 5: We fly out and it's with with Ocean Groove, Our
- 10:07Speaker 5: Melbourne Boys, Avoid from the.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Universe and Specs. I think so, I've heard also from Melbourne.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Very nice guys. Now we get this over quickly because
- 10:17Speaker 3: there run out of time.
- 10:17Speaker 4: But I've got a new segment. I'm introduced that heavy
- 10:19Speaker 4: you called our heavy glassy photo bomb, which basically I
- 10:22Speaker 4: troll through your social media before he chat and I
- 10:24Speaker 4: find some photos that I want to.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Know a little bit more about.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Oh, let's go.
- 10:29Speaker 3: So I found this one, like, doesn't look like there
- 10:32Speaker 3: was much room for you guys there? Who do you
- 10:34Speaker 3: need to come?
- 10:36Speaker 2: That was we're on a yacht.
- 10:40Speaker 5: We played a show on a yacht, and we're all
- 10:44Speaker 5: dressed up as sailors. We all stropy shirts and white
- 10:47Speaker 5: pants and stuff.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It was we couldn't even see the second row. It
- 10:53Speaker 1: was just like floor to ceiling.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Its crazy, that's that's that's more.
- 10:56Speaker 3: You had to do that? Or were you just being goofy.
- 10:59Speaker 2: A bit of column, a bit of colmn b on
- 11:01Speaker 2: that one.
- 11:02Speaker 4: I think I'm not his old mads right tunny there
- 11:05Speaker 4: it looks like he's just had himself a moment.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm glad he did, because I want to stunk again.
- 11:13Speaker 3: No, it's all right.
- 11:13Speaker 4: The other one I've found is what's the occasion with
- 11:17Speaker 4: this one?
- 11:17Speaker 3: Guys? You all scrubbing up pretty.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Well A s banger banger.
- 11:24Speaker 1: We got invited to the Elvis premiere, Like the movie
- 11:29Speaker 1: premiere red carpet event. We don't know why, and we
- 11:33Speaker 1: don't know how, but that was a really fucking awesome night.
- 11:37Speaker 1: We got absolutely pissed on free champagne. We were being
- 11:42Speaker 1: absolute menaces, but we had a really great time, and
- 11:45Speaker 1: it was really cool to see that movie before it
- 11:47Speaker 1: hits cinemas because it was a goat and he's the goat.
- 11:50Speaker 2: He's right here.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Oh it's very well. Oh well, that's a massive Elvis fan.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Were you impressed? I loved it. I'm a big Oh
- 11:59Speaker 2: my god, why am I? Why am I blanking on
- 12:03Speaker 2: his name? No?
- 12:06Speaker 1: But yeah, basil woman, Oh my god, I'm a big
- 12:12Speaker 1: Basilment fan. I mean, Romeo and Juliet is probably one
- 12:14Speaker 1: of me and my partners like favorite movies of all time.
- 12:18Speaker 1: And he always works with his wife, who's probably the
- 12:21Speaker 1: most incredible stylust ever.
- 12:23Speaker 2: And this was really.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Amazing to see and hear from her because she was
- 12:26Speaker 1: there and she did a speech and kind of explained things,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and it got me pretty hyped because you know, wardrobe
- 12:33Speaker 1: is a big part of our band and it's just
- 12:36Speaker 1: a it's a big job and a big effort, and
- 12:38Speaker 1: it was really fucking awesome.
- 12:39Speaker 3: That's awesome. Going sor right.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Well, thanks very much for your time. The album Bodies
- 12:43Speaker 4: is out April four. The Boys are off to Melbourne,
- 12:45Speaker 4: Sydney and Brisbane this weekend for some shows.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Where can people keep up with what you guys are
- 12:50Speaker 3: doing and buy.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Your album Instagram, Spotify? Probably it because we don't really
- 12:55Speaker 2: use anything else.
- 12:58Speaker 4: I will thanks very much your time, the pleasure, and
- 13:00Speaker 4: I'll try to make it along with the Brisbane show
- 13:02Speaker 4: and sail Okay, it's like having us noways go just
- 13:06Speaker 4: take care.
- 13:21Speaker 6: Show. Yes, I say, go to some side side. I say,
- 13:37Speaker 6: sa me you yeah, so my show? You want my
- 13:46Speaker 6: silver good Soldier away from the nurse. Also saw I
- 14:26Speaker 6: Love Loves So Girl Girls, True.
- 15:22Speaker 7: Captain, whatso mass s not nice way to jokes?
- 15:46Speaker 6: Just a bud house, It's just a second
