now. He is a current member of the Canawa County Board of Education and
3:17
he's up for re election. Rick Cavender, Good morning, sir. How
3:22
you doing sir? I'm not doing fine. You know you're a you're a
3:23
regular here as you're in your role as Charleston Urban Works formerly Main Street Charleston.
3:30
But your other job on one of them is you are a member of
3:32
the Canawa County Board of Education. How many years have you been on the
3:36
board and why do you want to continue? I am finishing my second term,
3:38
so I'm finishing on my eighth year on the board, which is hard
3:42
to believe, but yeah, but finishing eight year on the board. What
3:45
uh? What's been your highlights being on the border you know, it's been
3:47
a really interesting eight years for all of us. You know, right when
3:52
I was elected in twenty sixteen, the first time is when the floods of
3:54
the up river happened literally that same month, and I got sworn in July
3:59
first, and we immediately scheduled all these community meetings in Clinton and Elkview with
4:04
with the entire community, hundreds of people that we that we faced and and
4:09
you know, got their feedback and you know, told them, well,
4:12
you know, we are going to make sure you have a brand new,
4:14
state of the art school, right And of course that process took some time,
4:17
longer than we all wanted it to take. But you know, this
4:19
past September, we all gathered at the brand new, beautiful school at Herbert
4:24
Hoover High and cut the ribbon. That for me was a huge, a
4:28
huge deal and for that community was just incredible. Have you been up there
4:30
yet to see the school? I have, Yes, it's just you know,
4:32
it's it's i'd say, probably the nicest school in state to West Virginia.
4:35
Yeah, no doubt, it's incredible. And so that that, for
4:38
that was obviously a huge deal as a board member to be a part of
4:41
that process. Literally the entire eight years I've been on the board, we've
4:43
been working on that. That was certainly a highlight, I think, you
4:46
know, looking at sort of the more difficult issues we face, you know,
4:49
as a board we had to do at the local level. Some things
4:53
are in our control, some things are not, Some things are just left
4:56
up to the state. But you know, certainly when it comes to you
4:58
know, our students safety, you know, increasing security, you know,
5:01
backing both in twenty eighteen and twenty twenty two the excess levees because we knew
5:05
that that was the only way we're going to be able to increase and heightened
5:10
security in all of our schools. We have absolutely the best security director in
5:13
the state of West Virginia, Keith Fittetot. He's don an incredible job and
5:16
he has led all those efforts through the funding we received to heighten the security
5:20
and all of our schools. And so that to me was a huge deal
5:23
as a parent of two boys in the system, for me, that was
5:26
that was huge for all of us, I'm sure it was huge. So,
5:29
you know, that was great to see that those things come to fruition.
5:31
Amongst other things that we were able to do with with the excess Levey
5:34
funds, we've been able to increase mental health services in the schools. That
5:39
was a really big deal for me to to see our students have more access
5:42
to mental health services. We were able to turf all the football fields,
5:45
are now working on all the baseball fields at the high school level and some
5:47
middle school so, you know, and the list goes on. You know,
5:51
we've replaced over thirty h VAC units, you know that were well overdue.
5:56
Some deferred maintenance we've had, we have we know, we manage over
5:58
I think around seventy buildings in the in the entire county. We're one of
6:00
the largest employers in the in the state of West Virginia. So you know,
6:04
it was really important to see our students comfortable in their classrooms and what
6:09
has that done. That's made it so we don't have to close the school
6:11
in August because it's too hot, because we have upgraded facilities and we have
6:15
new heating and cooling units that we needed for so long, you know,
6:18
So backing those initiatives and really pushing for those publicly, I've been really proud
6:24
of because it's it is absolutely increased and enhanced the experience our students and our
6:28
faculty, teachers, administrators principles have talking to Rick Cavndor again Knawa County School
6:33
Board never up for re election talking about Rick Cavanor the guy give us give
6:39
us your bio. Well, you know, I'm born and raised right here
6:42
in Charleston, in Kannall County. I went to Systemville High School. Graduated
6:45
in two thousand from from Sistamville High. You know, from a very early
6:48
age I've been in I've I've really been interested in public service. You know.
6:51
Of course I did student council and now I'm kind of encouraging my sons
6:55
to to do that. And that's where it starts. It is, and
6:59
you learn a lot, that's for sure. But you know, and actually
7:01
stayed around locally and went to Western State University from a undergrad and management and
7:05
marketing right here in the valley, and you know, really got my career
7:11
started off early in the nonprofit sector. I worked for the YMCA Connal Valley
7:15
for six years. That's really where I got my start with just a wonderful
7:17
place to kind of you know, get your wings, started to get your
7:24
ways club wherever they say, and you know, that process really showed me
7:29
and taught me how not only to manage a nonprofit organization and to become a
7:32
manager and a leader, but also just exposed me to so many wonderful people
7:36
in this valley and got to know so many people through that process, and
7:40
then went to the private sector for a year and a half and then became
7:44
the director of what was then East End main Street. As you know,
7:46
we've changed several times. When you and I met, we had just become
7:48
the Charleston main Streams in twenty fifteen, and now of course we've rebranded to
7:53
Charleston Urban Work. So I've been in that been in that space, that
7:55
urban economic development space for sixteen years now, which is crazy, heart of
7:59
believe. But you know, father of two boys. One is at Capitol
8:03
High, one is a horseman, both extremely involved in sports and extracurriculars.
8:07
Keeps me very busy, and you know, just taking life day by day,
8:11
you know, getting my new house set up and doing all those things
8:15
you do. And it's been been quite a year, you know, Rick,
8:18
I think I've told the story before. My cousin served on the board
8:22
of Education in Logan County. Another lot of my good friends was on the
8:26
board in Harrison County, and I've had several other friends that have served on
8:30
the board of education. I was told by my friend up in Harrison County
8:33
that's serving on the school board was like jury duty. He said everyone should
8:37
have to do it. I don't know about that. That's kind of a
8:39
stretch. But serving on the school board in the state's largest county, and
8:43
particularly in where we are now twenty twenty four, I mean, you think
8:48
about it. You kind of mentioned this earlier. I mean, we're coming
8:50
out of COVID. You had to deal with that. There was no playbook.
8:54
No, you know, there was no playbook. You're dealing more with
8:58
charter schools now, you're dealing more with the homes scho cool, the high
9:00
school transfer role. I mean in sports. Oh yeah, not a particularly
9:03
easy time, Rick to serve on a board of education. No, no,
9:07
well, you know I'll say this first, Dave. You know,
9:09
when we've been going around this whole county all these meet the candidate events,
9:13
right, and we speak, and we do our meet and greets, and
9:16
we do Q and A. And I always make the point to say that
9:20
since I first was elected in twenty sixteen. I bet you if I haven't
9:22
had one, I've had a thousand people say to me, that has got
9:26
to be such a thankless job. That's like the term I always hear is
9:28
that term thankless job. But I can't disagree more. It's never felt thankless
9:33
to me. You know, of course, we don't get paid a whole
9:35
lot of money. I'll tell you that we barely get paid anything. But
9:37
it's never been about the money for any of us. That's not why we
9:39
do it. And it's not just public service. It's a special type of
9:43
public service. Right, This is having an influence and impact on our students'
9:48
education through policy. You know, we as board members, we don't control
9:52
the day to day operations. We do over we do review policy that is
9:56
presented to us, and we can either vote to pass it or to to
10:00
not and then make maybe make changes to it. And so you know that
10:05
aspect of it, among many others, has made it really enjoyable for me.
10:09
I've never once woken up and been like, oh, why am I
10:11
doing this? I've never once thought that, right, It's never been thankless
10:15
for me. So so to your point, do I believe that it maybe
10:18
it takes a special personality or folks that have a special interest in that type
10:22
of public service. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, you know, it's
10:24
it's maybe it's not for everyone, but for me it's been absolutely joyable.
10:28
But I will say we also have a really incredible superintendent. Doctor Williams has
10:33
done just a great job. My fellow board members, we all, I
10:35
think we all work really well together. Even if we don't always agree,
10:39
we respect one another at the end of the day when the meeting is over,
10:41
and I think that's really important. And there's just a wonderful staff,
10:45
not just at the central office, but we have so many great principles across
10:46
the county. We have so many incredible teachers. You know, we're really
10:50
really lucky here and Knell kind of to have the group of people we have.
10:54
Doctor to Rick Cavnur again. Phone calls to Dave Allen showing service of
10:56
Big Lee Pigley Whigly Texting services provided by Fruit Pharmacy, your hometown Family Pharmacy.
11:01
Rick. If you are re elected, what do you want to accomplish
11:03
next? What would you as a part of the school board, what would
11:07
you like to work on for your next term? You know, we are
11:09
continually facing, Dave. As you know, we've talked about it on air
11:11
before. We're facing the you know, a declining population here in not just
11:15
Kneal County, but the whole state of West Virginia. It's in it's every
11:18
county in the state. It's not just us, but we are, as
11:20
you mentioned, the largest county, and so those that sometimes impacts us more.
11:24
You know, we're we're facing those issues and because of that, because
11:28
of the state funding formula, we receive less funding and so things become a
11:31
little more difficult every single year for us to make sure we stay solvent with
11:35
our budget. And we have to do that and we always and we had
11:37
since I've been on the board and several years before that, we have and
11:41
so you know, looking at strategies and tactics to make sure that not only
11:46
do we stay solvent in our budget, but we're also providing the best education
11:48
we can with what we have considering the declining population. So that again I
11:52
mentioned the levy the excess levee before. That's why that was so important,
11:54
and the public overwhelmingly voted to support both of those excess levees. I mean,
11:58
we're talking like I think the first one was almost ninety percent passage because
12:03
we've been able to deliver results quickly with the usage of those funds. So
12:09
I think that we'll see more of that, you know, with the the
12:11
twenty twenty two levey that was passed. We will start implementing those projects that
12:16
were on that call sheet this coming year, and I'm excited about that.
12:20
That's more heightened security, that's more turfing of fields, that's more you know,
12:24
educational programming for our students. The list goes on, and so I'm
12:28
excited to see those things come to fruition. I think we've done a great
12:33
job of making sure we do that in a timely manner, and I think
12:35
that we'll see probably in the next couple of years just what that what that
12:41
population decline. And I'm hoping it doesn't happen. We don't know, maybe
12:46
some miracle will happen and we'll see. You know, there's a lot of
12:50
people moving into some of the other counties right now. I mean New Core
12:52
has been been huge, and that's that's a big enough project in scope that
12:58
it will affect Kanawa County. I know, it's our infact, you're Putnam
13:00
County rorewd live or there's people moving in all the time over there. But
13:03
that's right. So hoping we'll get a little trickle down. Yeah, And
13:05
I'll be honest, we do face we do face current challenges as it relates
13:09
to that from our budget. From a budget standpoint, you know, we
13:13
you know now that the legislature passed a bill for charter schools and we are
13:16
required to allocate a certain amount of our funding to charter schools that you know,
13:20
we don't frankly have any uh jurisdiction over if you will, any stay
13:24
over if you will, And it's hundreds of thousands of dollars, Dave,
13:28
and you know those are public, potentially public teacher positions that that are up
13:31
that are at stake there, and so you know, I do have issue
13:33
with that, and so I've been kind of monitoring that really closely. And
13:37
you know, so I think that will be potentially a challenge and you know,
13:41
we'll see. I think I think it is. Again, It's just
13:43
been a really enjoyable experience for me and I've just been I feel I feel
13:48
very lucky that the public has has brought me back for two terms and hopefully
13:50
for a third to continue this work. We have a website or social media
13:54
where people can my Facebook page. Rick Cavinder, Knaw County Board of Education
13:56
Member. All the information is there, uh and you know we're running some
14:01
ads right now with information about my endorsements. I'm very happy to be endorsed
14:05
by six different associations and unions that have continued to support me, including AFT,
14:11
the Teachers Union, the Teamsters, School Service Personnel Association, the Labor
14:16
Council, Communications Workers of America. The list goes on, and I've just
14:20
been really fortunate to maintain those endorsements because I would hope that they feel that
14:26
my work on the board has definitely been a positive influence for the county.
14:31
Final thirty watching somebody but to reelect Grit Cavender. I am again born and
14:37
raised here, very invested in this region, in this area, in the
14:41
county. You know, have worked literally my entire career, waking up every
14:46
single day to try and make it a little bit better, not only for
14:50
the residents people who live here, but also folks who are coming in to
14:52
visit. As far as as far as how that translates to the work I've
14:56
done on the Board of education. I am a firm believer that that economic
15:01
and community development work works hand in hand with our education system. We want
15:05
to make sure we not only educate our students here, but we give them
15:07
reason to want to stay and then reinvest themselves in this valley and show that
15:11
you can make a real difference by staying here. And I would like to
15:15
think that I've been an influenced positively to show our next generation that you can
15:18
do that and really be happy living here and thriving here. Rick, I

a little disappointed with the turnout so far. We've total through Saturday for Kanawak
19:36
County, we had twenty five hundred and two voters, and most of the
19:41
time we do that in today really, but I just think people still trying
19:47
to make up their mind, and they got this week to early. Well,
19:52
if you look at the polling, especially in the governor's race, there's
19:55
a lot of people clerk that say that they are undecided. And I'm sure
19:59
if you trickle that down to you know, maybe some of the mayoral or
20:03
House or Senate or magistery of Board of Education, you're right there maybe some
20:06
people that are still on the fence or undecided. I think. So we've
20:11
even had people calling asking us questions, what do you think, you know,
20:15
how come we have this many judges? How come we have this?
20:18
You know? Just they need to study their ballot, the ballot, spending
20:25
the paper, and it is a long ballot this time, and it's going
20:29
to take people a little bit longer to vote, so a lot of them
20:36
they are studying the ballot and I think maybe we'll pick up this week and
20:38
I hope. So you've been around long enough, clerk, as have I
20:42
to remember when there was no early voting, and I realized early voting is
20:48
a heck of a lot of work on your office, the poll workers,
20:51
et cetera. And candidates maybe as well give us your thoughts over all in
20:55
early voting. I like early voting. I think it gives people opportune who
21:00
to get out and vote and not worry about election day. We have nine
21:07
locations now and I think people likes it. I mean, you're always out
21:15
running around, whether you're downtown or in your area, like Marmotte. We
21:19
got places in Marmatten, Bell, They're always out and they have well ten
21:29
days to vote before election day. Now there is people that loves to vote
21:34
on election day. Oh yeah, sure, and as long as they vote,
21:40
Like I said, that's their privilege and that's their right to get out
21:45
there and vote. Yeah. Whatever, they can't vote, they can't complain
21:48
exactly. I agree with you. Now those locations, of course, you
21:51
got the Voters Building on Courier Street, the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council
21:53
on Virginia Street West, the Sheriff's Apartment of Cross Lanes, town Hall and
21:57
Bell, the City Hall in Saint Auban, Assistant to the Library, the
22:00
Olf Community Center, Marmette Town Hall, and the police detachment in Nitro,
22:04
so plenty of locations. Clerk, Yes, yes, we have. And
22:10
what people don't understand, it's a lot of work getting you know, these
22:15
the workers and getting set up for all of this. And it's expensive.
22:21
Yeah, I mean elections are you know? It's expensive to run an election.
22:26
It is very expensive. It's one of the biggest expenses that a county
22:29
has every year is and people don't People don't realize how expensive it is to
22:33
pull off an election. It really is. And we have all these poll
22:37
workers that we trained and that people don't realize that takes a thousand people to
22:42
open up on election day for us. It's a lot of workers. Yeah,
22:48
it's a lot. Have you have you done on poll workers? Are
22:51
you good? We're doing pretty good. Every now and then I've got it.
22:56
Well, got somebody quit this morning, you know? Thanks have yeah,
23:00
yeah, so, but we usually make it. And but all in
23:07
all, I just hope the people get out and votes, whether it's early
23:11
voting or on election day. All right, Well, clerk, I know
23:15
you're real busy. I will let you get back to it. I appreciate
23:18
you being here. Thanks a lot, and you're doing a great job.
23:21
And as all of the poll workers are, they're the unsung heroes and everything
23:25
is the poll workers that give up their time. Of course they get paid
23:27
for it. But it's a long day, whether it's early voting or on
23:30
election day. But hats off to you and staff. It is. And
23:33
we couldn't we couldn't have election without him. And I want to say,
23:38
I hope my poll workers are listening. But I've got great poll workers.
23:42
Some of them we've had ten twenty thirty years, and we do have good
23:48
poll workers. All right, Clerk McCormick, I appreciate it. We'll talk

I do like to kind of give you some insider information from time to time,
25:56
and this is something that people may not think about. And this is
26:00
back to my days in the Secretary of State's office that you know, it
26:03
wasn't anything people give a lot of thoughts to. You cannot go into the
26:07
polling place with a T shirt, a hat or anything on that indicates support
26:12
for a candidate that is considered electioneering. So if you got your Hollywood Jeff
26:18
Petty for Board of Education shirt, ont to scar your thought that is,
26:22
but you cannot walk into the polling place with that because that is considered to
26:26
be a violation. I have actually seen they've had to tell perspective voters,
26:30
Okay, you don't need to take your shirt off, sir ma'am, but
26:34
you got to put a jacket on. You got to turn it inside out
26:37
or whatever. You cannot have anything on your person when you go into a
26:41
polling place that could be considered electioneering. Also, no cell phones. This
26:51
was a situation a couple of years ago we had when people were wanting to
26:55
take selfies inside the voting booth. That is illegal. No cell phones are
27:00
allowed. So just a couple of things you need to know. But Dave

31:33
No, you are looking ahead over the next week or so. Let's
31:37
see, I've got Board of Education, I've got governor, Intermediate Court of
31:41
Appeals to two of those House, State Senate, Magistrate, us Senate,
31:45
lev's main prosecuting attorneys. I only have an hour. Well, that's why
31:49
I started telling people Mayor in in January. Yeah, you only have an
31:52
hour. And I mean people are listening to you for other reasons too,
31:56
write I mean, that's I don't even listen. A variety of different topics
32:00
on the show is certainly important. And tomorrow on the show, Quick Blood
32:02
candidate for Putnam Candy Border of Education, Christian Wells candidate for the Intermediate Court
32:07

32:09

32:12
you hear is the voice of Charleston mer Or. Amy Good. I'm absolutely
32:15
fantastic, Very good your mayorship. How are I'm excellent? Spent spent the
32:20
weekend cleaning out college apartments, moving college kids. So my back is killing.
32:28
So okay, let me ask you this as a non parent. So
32:30
you bring them a house divided WVM Marshall greenible. Okay, so you bring
32:35
them all right back home, and then you got to take them all back
32:37
I know, I mean can't. There are way more more I know,
32:42
a more efficient way to just let them keep the stuff there, because I
32:45
know, yes, no, yes, and we do. But the one
32:49
who was moving from a dorm and then into an apartment, you can't get
32:51
into the apartment. Every parent's listening, you know, listen. I would
32:54
love to. But those who have an apartment, like my one child who
32:58
has an apartment, who when I got there, said I got everything taking
33:01
care of. It's good to go. We can close it up for six
33:04
weeks. I'm good, mom, I said, Well the bread on the
33:07
counter, the orange in the fruit basket, and yeah, we can't.
33:10
We can't leave that. The eggs, they'll expire it, honey, So
33:14
we need to you leave it. You leave some snacks and they come back
33:17
and it's a science experience. You know how big a contractor bag is,
33:21
right? Contract six dirty clothes? I said to him, child, do
33:24
you have way too many clothes? Yeah? If you can fill up six
33:27
contractor and one was a duvet covering up you know, a feathered you know,
33:30
some bedding, So that took up one. So in my evenings,
33:36
I mean tonight's city councils, I won't be doing it. I miss I
33:38
missed so much. If anybody wants to call me late at night any night
33:42
this week, I'll be in my laund Just holler at me, give me
33:44
the little text, all right. May There are so many big announcementsince you've
33:46
been on the show last for Regatta, to the demolition of the Macy's ability
33:50
to make room of the proposed Capital Sports Complex, multifast, A lot of
33:53
buzz going on in Charleston, and the population is about the quadruple with this
33:59
bicycling the Vanda. No, I'm so excited about it. Yeah. USA
34:01
Cycling's coming into town. As a matter of fact, I was just on
34:04
the phone with our engineer this morning. We were going over paving two point
34:07
seven million dollars. Ninety streets are going to be paved. But I will
34:12
say when we met with the USA Cycling team, gosh, you was last
34:15
year when we got this. They said your streets are great. I mean
34:19
patching here and there. We're doing works playground today, but infrastructure is always
34:22
important. We're keeping up with it. But USA Cycling, if you'd still
34:25
like to volunteer, and we're going to need volunteers, you can go on
34:30
to Charleston WV dot com the CBB site. They're doing an amazing, amazing
34:36
job at the CVB getting folks to sign up. But we're talking about six
34:40
hundred athletes, Dave and people travel to watch these cyclists. I mean,
34:45
I don't know if you have driven up Bridge Road anytime recently. It's a
34:51
really steep climb. These folks are going to fly up it and down Louden
34:58
six times as fasts as they can. That's just one small component to USA
35:02
Cycling. So people from all over the country are flying in to not only
35:07
participate, but also flying in to watch. So our hotels, our restaurants
35:12
are going to be packed and it's going to be it's going to be super
35:15
fun. So participate or just come down and watch it. This is history
35:19
in the making. I mean, this is absolutely one of the biggest and
35:23
best things that we've done, and it's impressive, and this is an international,
35:28
slash national audience that's going to have a spotlight on Charleston, West,
35:30
Virginia. So an ESPN is going to be here. You know, be
35:34
patient with us too. We you know our public grounds folks. You know,
35:37
there's a lot of planting and mowing and weeding, and so it's it's
35:44
we're burning the midnight oil. I mean, I would imagine, mayor,
35:45
I would imagine that this is And of course we've had, you know,
35:50
the big regattas over the year going this is it, but this is this
35:54
is This is bigger because it takes some more area. I mean, the
35:58
regatta is pretty much you know, on the boulevard and down that way,
36:01
but this is going into residential neighborhoods. It's going into as you said,
36:05
Bridge Road and that kind of cool. You know the Bridge Road shops and
36:08
folks are doing like watch parties, uh, and folks are doing specials up
36:13
there, and restaurants are doing specials and and shops are doing specials. So
36:15
it's it's so fun because this will intertwine through our neighborhoods. As you just
36:21
mentioned, this will be like little mini regattas everywhere in the city. And
36:24
that is just what is so cool. Anytime a mayor gets to have her
36:29
city on you know, the National Spotlight showcasing something as positive as this.
36:34
It's really cool. Plus you know people can actually participate. I won't be
36:39
I'm not a bike rider. My husband is. I'm not. But you
36:43
can actually do you know, there's a non professional race that you can actually
36:47
do it. So and I know some folks are going to do it Charleston.
36:51
Charleston has a lot of bikes, a lot of advice, and they're
36:53
the you know, there are credit where credit is due, you know,
36:55
the Teddy Armbrecks and the Todd Goldman's and those folks who really Jack Abitzol and
37:02
Eric Sholwalter, you know folks who helped us get this. Wasn't just the
37:07
mayor and does one CVB Tim Brady. It were local bikers who did the
37:10
pitching for us to say, hey, here are some routes we ride,
37:15
here are some really cool things. We know what you do, you know,
37:17
come to our city. And they hosted them and so you know,
37:22
we take you know, our names on the door and our names are on
37:23
the press releases. But these guys really made this happen and they got these
37:28
guys here talk about the economic impact this is going to happen, Charles.
37:30
You know, we really won't know until it's said and done, but it'll
37:34
be one of the biggest and best that we've had because of the amount of
37:37
days. You know, fourteenth through the nineteenth, how many days are going
37:40
to be here, how many people are coming in for it. We'll know
37:45
well until it's after the Here's here's why it's substantial. This five years,
37:50
Dave, just five years. This isn't a hey, they're coming this year,
37:53
which, by the way, we appreciate those somebody who was asking me
37:57
in the green room, how do you get one of these things? You
38:00
fist, fight, you compete. You know, people think tourism and travel
38:05
tourism, this is just you know, I always say, you think we're
38:07
the fun people former Commissioner Tourism. I can tell you no, we're not.
38:10
We're the money people. Were the We're the folks who are grinding.
38:15
We're the folks who are going out bidding on things and competing with other cities.
38:20
Because that's what this is all about. This could have gone to three
38:23
other cities and it didn't. And it's because you know, a team of
38:28
really good folks who know what they're doing, put a package together and they
38:30
sold it and they were aggressive about it. That's how you get good things
38:35
to happen in your city. Talking to me, Amy Schulder, good one

38:58
I would be remiss if I didn't ask this. In Saturday's Gazette Mail,
39:01
there was an end depth story on the release of the records involving former police
39:06
chief Tay count. Now now that those are out and have been published,
39:12
any thoughts sharing? Yeah? Sure, no, I'll say this. I
39:16
have confidence in our Chief of Police, Scott Dempsey, who made that decision,
39:24
and I stand by him. You know, it is super easy to
39:29
stand on the outskirts when you don't have you know, all the information,
39:32
cast judgment and say you did the wrong thing. I know this, At
39:37
the end of the day, I am quite positive in my five and a
39:40
half years of being mayor that we've made mistakes that we may have you know,
39:45
gone, gosh, she was, I wish we'd have done something.
39:47
But at the end of the day, I know this. We make the
39:51
best decisions that we make with the information that's in front of us. We
39:54
do. Our head and our heart are always in the right place, and
39:58
my moral compass is never all off. And so that's what I have to
40:00
go on. This chief of police made a good decision with the information that
40:05
he had, and you know that's what's really you know, we talked about
40:09
paving earlier, and I've got counsel tonight. I've got body armor on for
40:14
our firefighters. I've got you know, think when you armor, I was
40:19
thinking literally that you're wearing body armored to the council meeting tonight, which I've
40:22
seen some of them. Maybe you should yeah, right, Well, I
40:24
guess then to my even bigger point, you know what we do. We
40:28
do the things that improve people's life. We do paving, we do trash
40:30
collection, we do dilapidated housing. We do, summer programming, we do,
40:37
and you can get distracted, and when people are so focused on one
40:40
thing, it becomes very political, right, it becomes very Those who want
40:46
to just always upset the apple cart don't have a full vision of what we're
40:51
actually doing. This is how I spend most of my day, ninety percent
40:53
of my day, or the things to the person who lives in this neighborhood
40:59
works downtown. I'm working for you every day. That's what we're doing.
41:04
And so you know, these other things that unfortunately have happened, are addressed
41:09
and they are dealt with. But we move on because we have to,
41:15
because I have, you know, fifty thousand people that are depending upon me
41:19
to work twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, along with,
41:22
by the way, the other seven hundred and fifty employees we have who've
41:25
committed their life to working for you in the city. And by the way,
41:30
that includes our police officers, who we will celebrate on Friday. It's
41:37
a CPD Awards ceremony because, by the way, we need to be talking
41:42
about the good they're doing. You know, a lot of what's been put
41:45
in the media, we're not focused on them, and you know that's unfair
41:50
to them and the good works that they do. I could spend my day
41:53
making phone calls, and I try to for the most part, when when
41:57
I know about somebody doing something good, you know, nobody talks about the
42:01
the police officer who was called to a house with a young adult male who
42:07
had severe autism and nonverbal who was having a bad day. Nobody's talking about
42:12
that officer who sat on that top step to calm him down. Anybody talking
42:15
about that, No, they're not. But he did for hours to calm
42:19
him down, to bring him to a place where his parents could talk to
42:22
him, work with him, to have them you know, ems folks look
42:25
at him, make sure he's doing Okay. That's what our guys and girls
42:29
do every single day. That's the hard work they're doing. And oh,
42:31
by the way, it's really hard work. So when something like this comes
42:36
up, boy, it's a punch in the gut to them. But guess
42:38
what they're doing, still doing their work, and that's what we should be
42:42
doing too, including this morning commandeering a snake. Gosh, did you say
42:45
if you go? I actually actually shared it on my radio page. Yeah,
42:50
apparently Charleston PD was called there was a snake. I know. Chris
42:53
Lauren's got me in the green room. He's like, did you shut down
42:55
a street for some snakes? I'm like, is this like snakes on a
42:58
plane? Is just like a like a I said no. Ill on Chie
43:01
was Matthew Sutton. I've said, this is going to be the most bizarre
43:05
question you were asked this calendar year. He said, I don't. I
43:07
doubt that, but go ahead, go ahead, take your best shot.
43:10
I think what I read was it was a rat snake. Somebody called to
43:14
say, hey, can you take care of this? Brad s name so
43:16
he's like, yeah again identified him first knew what kind of snake. Identified.
43:22
Oh it's George. Oh yeah, yeah, George the rat snake pictures.
43:24
George's pictures posted on my on Dave Allen Radio. I just shared it
43:29
for he was not happy. But we moved him because he was by the
43:31
library, so we moved him, which is unfortunate because he probably was taking
43:35
care of a couple of rudins for folks down there. But anyhow, he's
43:37
he's in the relocation program. I guess let me do this text will go
43:42
to break ask me a good one to release the entire file on the tai
43:45
Kin investigation. They claimed Foy exemptions don't apply, it's wrong to force a
43:49
lawsuit to turn over this information, and they read the Charles Gazette versus Smithers,
43:52
which held that the policeman's conduct records and a closed discipline case are public
43:57
records under FOY. You know what I want at the end of the this
44:00
is what I really want. I want women and men who have something to
44:04
say about somebody that they believe somebody did something that was immoral or criminal.
44:08
I want them to speak freely. I want them to be able to come
44:12
to me and say, this is what happened to me, and I am
44:15
going to tell you what. I want them to be open and honest.
44:21
That's what everybody should want in an investigation, because by golly, you should
44:25
do anybody, if you've got any problem with somebody, come in. What
44:29
I don't want our people to say, because it's real easy to say open
44:32
it all up to other women or other men who've come forward to say I've
44:37
got something to tell about it. I don't want Maybe this particular instance is
44:40
different. You know, men or women who don't care. I don't care
44:44
what said. By the way, Dave, there are a lot of women
44:45
who would never in a million years have you released their name. I want
44:51
those women and those men to feel confident when they're coming in. And if
44:54
you've got something to say about any employee, by the way, don't have
44:57
to be please officer or about any employee. I want you to know we
45:00
take it serious and we will work to protect you because that is a painful
45:04
process to go through. It may not be for some, but it is
45:07
for many many, and I will fight for that because I want people to
45:12
be Listen, we are open and we are transparent, but I am never
45:15
going to say to a potential victim or a possible victim, oh, I'm
45:20
going to spread this all over the front page of the paper, going and
45:22
talk to Dave Allen. Once you tell me something, I will not I
45:24
will not do it because the integrity of investigations should remain strong. And when
45:31
somebody gets out and just starts throwing listen, it's easy just to say it
45:36
when you're not in it, when you don't have to abide by rules of
45:40
HR or by the way to protect people too, to protect the people who
45:45
are coming. By the way, the people who are coming forward to testify
45:50
to say this is what happened, we should we should give them that protection
45:54
because I want to know what happened. But Dave Allan showing five any life

their Department of Highways has been completed and so when when will the results be
48:36
made available to the public. Yeah, everything's with the prosecutor office, so
48:38
it'll be up to them. All right. We had a question about the
48:42
Union Building. Somebody asked you about the status of the Union Building. Gosh,
48:45
you whiz. We're all waiting with bita breath. It's a gorgeous building.
48:50
I have heard through the grapevine indirectly, I'll be honest, indirectly from
48:53
some folks who have interest in taking it over and developing it everything boutique hotel
49:01
to high end living lofts to condos to you know, mixed use. But
49:07
it's it's an iconic building. It's a beautiful building. And so we'll see
49:10
what We'll see what happens. Now there's a meeting I understand. Is it's
49:15
born out in this Capital Connector talk talk about them, Yeah, sure,
49:16
Capital Connector. So I went out for a grant caush you is a couple
49:21
of years ago with the support of who was always so supportive of Charleston,
49:25
Senator Shelley Moore Capito and Senator Joe Manchin helped us secure a two million dollar
49:30
planning grant to take from Magic Island to the thirty fifth Street Bridge an expansion
49:36
of the river front. And so we are in that planning phase. What
49:42
does it look like? What are we going to put there? How will
49:44
flow go? It is a you know when I ran five and a half
49:47
years ago, I talked about development of the river front. You know,
49:52
Hadad is great. By the way it's being painted right now. Somebody called
49:54
the other day and said, why do you have trucks down there? Because
49:58
it hasn't been cleaned or painted at Las East in the records that we can
50:00
find. So we did lots of things that are happening down there this summer.
50:04
So got to fix clean, painteds, just some maintenance work on it.
50:07
But Magic Island to the thirty fifth Street Bridge, what does the rest
50:12
of that waterfront look like? What can we do to enhance biking walking?
50:19
You know, my boys are twenty and twenty two now, but you know
50:23
I used to have a double jog stroller at them. It's really hard to
50:27
navigate on the current sidewalks that are on the East end right now. So
50:32
we Gai who's been helping us James Jos. If anybody knows James Jos,
50:37
you know he is attention to detail. Our first public meeting is going to
50:42
be at the library, Capital Connector meeting tomorrow five to six as well.
50:51

51:39
