Transcript
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for writing success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: In the previous episode, I mentioned the importance of finishing a first draft of your book, but the urgency doesn't stop there.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying that you should be sloppy or rush through things.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: I think you should make your book or any writing for that matter as good as it possibly can be.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: But the fact of the matter is that we all have limited time on this earth.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: There comes a point after you've written that first draft and done the second draft, you've done revisions and formatting, and you've done the other things you need to do to make your writing great, there comes a time when you just need to publish it.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Your number one goal should be to get your current project finished and published and then moving on to the next thing.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: We make this whole writing thing sometimes really overly complicated sometimes, I think.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So make it good, do your best, and then hit publish on that sucker.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: You're not going to become a better writer by constantly tinkering with your current project and never actually pulling the trigger to publish it.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: You'll get better by doing more work and learning from each project while getting feedback along the way.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It's really hard to get a lot of meaningful feedback on something if you've never actually published it.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Of course, you can use beta readers and you can send it to your mom or your third cousin or whatever else, and that could be fine.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, after all, my mom is actually an amazing editor, but there's a limit to that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: You really need to publish your stuff and get it out there so you can get some super meaningful feedback from a large number of people.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: The author Dan Pointer was one of the early advocates of self-publishing, and he said this if you wait for inspiration to write, you're not a writer, you're a waiter.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Well, that's probably true, and I appreciate the humor of what he said, but maybe that's an overstatement because even waiters deliver something to the table.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: So make it your goal to deliver your work to your hungry readers who've been waiting a long time for your book, blog, podcast, or whatever it might be.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Here's your daily question Have you been putting off publishing your work because you're a perfectionist?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Be honest.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
