- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the twenty second Sunday after Pentecost with commemoration of Saint Everest Everestus, Us, October 26 in the year of our Lord 2026. In the liturgical year Dom Prosper Geringer writes, the beloved disciple had just received the long promised visit of our Lord inviting him to heaven when the church under ever estas completed the drawing up of the itinerary for her long pilgrimage to the end of time. The blessed period of the Apostolic times was definitely closed but the eternal city continued to augment her treasure of glory. Under this pontificate the Virgin Domatila by her martyrdom cemented the foundations of the New Jerusalem with the old.
- 1:15Then Ignatius of Antioch brought to the church that presides in charity the testimony of his death. He was the wheat of Christ and the teeth of the wild beasts in the Colosseum satisfied his desire of becoming a most pure bread. Everestis was born in Greece of a Jewish father and was sovereign pontiff during the reign of Trajan. He divided the titles of the churches of Rome among the priests and ordained that seven deacons should attend the bishop when preaching. He also decreed that according to the tradition of the apostles, matrimony should be celebrated publicly and blessed by a priest.
- 2:11He governed the church nine years and three months. He held ordinations four times in the month of December and ordained 17 priests, two deacons, and 15 bishops. He was crowned with martyrdom and buried near the tomb of the prince of the apostles on the seventh of the calendar of November. Thou art the first pontiff to whom the church was entrusted after the departure of all those who had seen the Lord. The world could then say in all strictness, If we have known Christ according to the flesh, now we know him so no longer.
- 3:06The church was now more truly in exile. At that period which was not without perils and anxieties her spouse gave to thee the charge of teaching her to pursue along her path of faith and hope and love. And thou didst not betray the confidence of our Lord. Earth owes thee on this account a special gratitude, oh, everistus, and a special reward is doubtless thine. Watch still over Rome in the church.
- 3:49Teach us that we must be ready not only to fast here on earth but to be resigned to the absence of the bridegroom when he hides himself and not less to serve him and love him with our whole heart and mind and soul and strength as long as the world endures and he is pleased to leave us therein. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit, If thou, O Lord, should mark our guilt, master, who has strength to bear it? Ah, but with thee there is forgiveness, O God of Israel.
- 4:53Out of the depths I cry to thee, O Lord. Master, listen to my voice. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. If thou, O Lord, should mark our guilt, master, who has strength to bear it?
- 5:25Ah, but with thee there is forgiveness, O God of Israel. The Collect, let us pray. O God, our refuge and our strength, who thyself art the fountain of all piety, look down, we beseech thee, on the fervent prayers of thy church and grant that what in faith we ask, we may in all profitable fullness receive through Christ our Lord. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Everestis.
- 6:08O eternal Shepherd, do thou look favourably upon thy flock, which we beseech thee to guard and keep forevermore through the blessed Everestis, thy martyr and supreme pontiff, whom thou didst choose to be the chief shepherd of the whole church through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Philippians. Brethren, I am confident that he who has inspired this generosity in you will bring it to perfection, ready for the day when Jesus Christ comes. It is only fitting that I should entertain such hopes for you.
- 7:12You are close to my heart, and I know that you all share my happiness in being a prisoner and being able to defend and assert the truth of the gospel. God knows how I long for you all with the tenderness of Jesus Christ himself and this is my prayer for you. May your charity grow richer and richer yet in the fullness of its knowledge and the depth of its perception so that you may learn to prize what is of value. May nothing cloud your conscience or hinder your progress till the day when Christ comes. May you reap through Jesus Christ the full harvest of your justification to God's glory and his praise.
- 8:17The gradual, gracious the sight and full of comfort when brethren live united. Gracious as balm poured on the head till it flows down onto the beard as balm that flowed down Aaron's beard. Alleluia. Alleluia. The Lord gives hope to all who fear him, their only help, their only stronghold.
- 8:49Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time the Pharisees withdrew and plotted together to make Jesus betray himself in his talk And they sent their own disciples to him with those who were of Herod's party and said, Master, we know well that thou art sincere, and teachest in all sincerity the way of God, that thou holdest no one in awe, making no distinction between man and man. Tell us then, is it right to pay tribute to Caesar or not? Jesus saw their malice.
- 9:44Hypocrites, he said, why do you thus put me to the test? Show me the coinage in which the tribute is paid. So they brought him a silver piece, and he asked them, whose is this likeness? Whose name is inscribed on it? Caesar's, they said.
- 10:11Whereupon he answered, why then give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's? The offertory. O Lord, all power is at thy command. Do not forget me now. So frame my utterance that the king may look on my plea with favor.
- 10:45The secret. Grant, O merciful God, that this saving right may unremittingly free us from all personal guilt and fend off all misfortune through Christ our Lord. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Everestis. In thy loving kindness we beseech thee, Lord, be moved by the offering of our gifts and enlighten thy church that thy flock may prosper everywhere and the shepherds under thy guidance may be rendered acceptable to thee through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 11:44Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 12:47Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. I cry to thee, the God whoever hearest me, turn thy ear and listen to my plea. The post communion.
- 13:16Let us pray. We have taken the gifts of the sacred mystery, O Lord, humbly imploring that what thou hast bidden us to do in commemoration of thee may avail unto the help of our weakness, who livest and reignest with God the Father through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Everestis. Since thy Church has been nourished by the sacred repast, govern her in thy clemency, we beseech thee, O Lord, so that under the guidance of thy mighty rule she may enjoy greater freedom and abiding integrity of religion through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 14:20Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God. Saint Everestis, pray for us.
