- 0:00jesus coming up a child getting murdered basically
- 0:09nine years ago we launched the afterlife road
- 0:13haunted michigan web series that's how we started
- 0:16back in college and the very first episode of
- 0:18this web series out of like over 200 episodes
- 0:22came out 300 locations the first episode was
- 0:24called forest calls which was a pun because we
- 0:30were in the haunted forest and all of us got
- 0:33a phone call from each other at the same time
- 0:37but no one rang the phone and there was just
- 0:39like heavy breathing on the other end of the
- 0:42phone call like out of a horror movie um that's
- 0:45creepy yeah um but anyway that actually happened
- 0:49wait yeah yeah that was the very first thing
- 0:51i ever filmed for paranormal stuff that's wild
- 0:54yeah yeah and um Flash forward nine years later,
- 0:58we have a dumb podcast called Paranormal Lens,
- 1:00and we're going to talk about Forrest calling
- 1:03others through, like, real shit. Like, screams
- 1:09and stuff. Because back in the day, ghosts couldn't
- 1:11call you on the phone. They had to scream to
- 1:13get your attention. Oh, yeah. I guess, like,
- 1:17Bree here is the, um... What's the word for,
- 1:22like, outdoors experts? Like, there's a word.
- 1:26self -proclaimed outdoors woman okay so brie's
- 1:32a self -proclaimed outdoors woman even though
- 1:34i proclaimed it but you know let's not get into
- 1:36semantics um so today brie is going to break
- 1:39down for us some common screams and sounds that
- 1:45people hear in the forests in the woods that
- 1:48some may say are spirits beckoning you in to
- 1:52then get lured and lost and or trapped by demonic
- 1:55beings uh or more likely it might just be owls
- 1:59or some shit which might be scarier in angela's
- 2:03opinion yeah welcome to our podcast where we
- 2:06take deep dives looking at various topics through
- 2:08a paranormal lens i think if i because brie you
- 2:14sent like a series of audio clips to me i think
- 2:17if i play them we'll all be able to see what
- 2:20they are on our end so it won't be like a a thing
- 2:24where i can be like guess what this is yeah but
- 2:26we can at least hear it and then say what we
- 2:28think it sounds like like try to like close your
- 2:33eyes and put yourself in the middle of the woods
- 2:35at night and if you heard this sound what would
- 2:39you think it is ang what would you think these
- 2:41sounds are okay i think angela is going to be
- 2:44the biggest person to like guess like listen
- 2:47to this because i mean I picked the noises out,
- 2:51and you're playing them, obviously. I haven't
- 2:54heard them before this. Like, Brie sent them
- 2:56to me to play, so Brie knows all of these. And
- 2:59she would be able to identify them by ear anyways,
- 3:03because she is a self -proclaimed outdoors woman.
- 3:05Let's get into some of these sounds, and pretend
- 3:08like you... Well, actually, you can't really
- 3:10see what this one is, so... You shouldn't have
- 3:14any... I shrunk it on my end, so I can't... It'll
- 3:18come into frame, so you will be able to see what
- 3:20it is. Okay. So just close your eyes a little
- 3:23bit, Ange, and... I can't see what's playing,
- 3:26though. Okay, but an animal. She's saying an
- 3:27animal will come into the frame. So, close your
- 3:31eyes, and... Well, I guess I spoiled it. But
- 3:35anyways, is this a real animal or a fake animal?
- 3:39Ghost? Banshee? Alright, let us know. Jesus,
- 3:54how long is that thing going on? What the heck
- 3:56is that? So since I already said it was an animal
- 4:01by accident, Ange, what animal do you guess this
- 4:04is? Sounds like a distressed beagle. A distressed
- 4:07beagle. A distressed beagle? No, it's got like
- 4:19a purr to it. Is this some sort of cat? It is.
- 4:22Look at you go. It is a bobcat. A bobcat. Okay.
- 4:26Yeah, it's actually, like, I mean, but if you
- 4:30can imagine hearing that late at night in the
- 4:33middle of nowhere in the deep, dark woods. Definitely
- 4:37be a little off. Bobcat is not the first thing
- 4:40on your brain sometimes. So after hearing that,
- 4:43maybe it should be. Yeah, it does actually cut
- 4:52like it starts off like a purr and then kind
- 4:55of the way it ends like roar Kind of sound like
- 4:59if you only hear the end bit It's actually just
- 5:02again distance and like yeah at a distance. You're
- 5:04not gonna hear that like yeah almost purr sound
- 5:07to it Yeah, the the rolling to it. You're just
- 5:10gonna hear that screaming. Mm -hmm. So We sound
- 5:14like a guy just And this is just one video. I
- 5:20mean, they can sound different than this, but,
- 5:22like, this was the shortest, most, like, immediate
- 5:26sound that you could hear in the video, so. Anyways.
- 5:30Wait, the video says Bobcat screams for a mate?
- 5:35Yeah, it is like their mating call. Oh. Yeah.
- 5:40Oh. So you'll typically hear this during, like,
- 5:43mating season for Bobcats. So, like, springtime.
- 5:50Spring, maybe, yes, I would say springtime. Interesting.
- 5:57I would, if I heard that in the woods, I would
- 6:00run away. I would not. Yeah, you probably should.
- 6:03Yeah. So it's not my kind of a mating call. All
- 6:08right. And this next one is going to be really
- 6:11enlightening. I'm intrigued myself. Is that a
- 6:22bunny? No. I did actually look for a bunny because
- 6:26bunnies do make screaming sounds, but I could
- 6:29not find a good video of rabbits screaming. I
- 6:31never heard one, but I've heard bunnies sound
- 6:33like a child getting murdered. Yes. Yeah. So,
- 6:38I didn't know. Without his game going on. I mean,
- 6:43it's kind of obvious it's probably an animal,
- 6:45but to me it does sound like a banshee. If you
- 6:47were to say, what does a banshee sound like?
- 6:49Probably something like that, just like longer
- 6:51screams. You said it sounded like a child getting
- 6:55murdered. If you heard that without any context
- 6:58of this dumb game we're doing or whatever, would
- 7:01you think it was a child? It sounds like a toddler
- 7:02screaming to me. So if you heard that in the
- 7:07woods, would you think someone was in trouble?
- 7:10I don't know. If I heard this in the woods and
- 7:13didn't... I mean, I have... like i'm thinking
- 7:19of animals you know so if i just heard this randomly
- 7:22in the woods i don't know what i would have thought
- 7:24yeah well that was a fox oh okay yeah so the
- 7:32age -old question of what does the fox say it
- 7:35screams no it doesn't go like the song uh no
- 7:44Not accurate at all, actually. It's not accurate
- 7:47at all. That's how the song went, I think. Well,
- 7:51unfortunately, the song is not accurate, and
- 7:53I feel like if the song was accurate, it probably
- 7:57wouldn't have become as popular. It would have
- 8:00been banned on the radio. Probably. Probably
- 8:03would have caused a lot of car accidents. If
- 8:07you're in ghost mode... Do you envision yourself
- 8:11ever letting your guard down and thinking that
- 8:13might be something or would you? So that is a
- 8:17really good question because I feel like no matter
- 8:22what in an outdoor location, anytime we're outdoors,
- 8:26I am always wildlife and nature like. explanations
- 8:32first before paranormal i was gonna say like
- 8:36i feel like you're automatically gonna go to
- 8:38like i'm i'm autumn yeah i'm automatically outdoor
- 8:42mode like what could explain this i'm not automatically
- 8:45oh my gosh that was a ghost screaming for me
- 8:49like um But, yeah. That's weird when they put
- 8:52it. We don't ever ask, can you scream for me?
- 8:55If I hear that child getting murdered, I'm not
- 8:59thinking, oh, a child's getting murdered screaming
- 9:01for me. Yeah. But, I mean, that's, like, the
- 9:05big thing with, like, screaming forests. So,
- 9:09I, that. The folklore and everything behind them
- 9:13is so interesting. It mainly originates back
- 9:16in England or European areas. There's famous
- 9:20screaming forests or haunted forests. And a lot
- 9:24of them, I mean, most of the animals I have on
- 9:27this list are American animals. There's definitely
- 9:30different ones in Europe that could make screaming
- 9:33noises. most of them can be explained by wildlife
- 9:40and like you have these folklores and histories
- 9:42and like just these urban legends of the someone
- 9:48got lost in the woods one day and they could
- 9:51hear them screaming out in the woods so someone
- 9:54went out to go find them and never returned and
- 9:58you can still hear them screaming calling out
- 10:01trying to come home but they can't find their
- 10:04way and that's that's it it just is such an interesting
- 10:08concept i mean there's there's so many different
- 10:11folklores and legends and stuff especially in
- 10:14those european continents of like uh the fey
- 10:18and uh hauntings and because everything's just
- 10:22so much older over there you made me think of
- 10:25like you know all the city folk who are just
- 10:27like yeah i don't believe in ghosts because like
- 10:30it's all just like old houses creaking but that
- 10:34one time i heard that screaming in the woods
- 10:36that might have been a demon it's just like that's
- 10:40your equivalent of i'm not a city folk i don't
- 10:43know about the creeks in the old building but
- 10:45i know that that's that's the fox yeah yeah yeah
- 10:48exactly it's like i i i may know that like, that
- 10:53creaking door squeaking of the house might just
- 10:58be it settling, too. But I also know that that
- 11:00scream is definitely not supernatural. I know
- 11:05a couple weeks ago at one of the events we had
- 11:09gone to, someone was like, oh, I caught this
- 11:12scream and played this audio clip for me. And
- 11:16I'm like, that's 100 % an owl. And they're like,
- 11:20what? And I'm like, Yeah, I'm so sorry to tell
- 11:23you, but that's actually an owl. Like, I was
- 11:27trying to find the audio clip, and that day I
- 11:30couldn't find it. And while I was looking up
- 11:32the audio clips for this video, I finally found
- 11:35it. And I think it was the Eastern Screech Owl,
- 11:38which I didn't include in this, because they're...
- 11:41They have a lot more chirps. So you typically
- 11:43hear their chirps in their hooting before the
- 11:47screech. And in their video or their audio clip,
- 11:50you could just hear the screech. So it wasn't
- 11:54a good example of like screaming things in the
- 11:57forest. But yeah, it was it was. But that's that
- 12:00kind of goes back to what I talked about in some
- 12:03of our previous. podcast episodes is like we're
- 12:05not all experts in the paranormal there's no
- 12:08paranormal experts but we're experts in our own
- 12:11different fields if only when that person had
- 12:13the scream that they thought was a ghost and
- 12:17they showed it to you and you're like it's actually
- 12:19an owl you could have showed this podcast episode
- 12:21but yeah yeah that's but like i said it's not
- 12:25this owl because this owl it just go ahead and
- 12:29play it what is this owl It's not the crickets,
- 12:37obviously. Taben's excited, though. Cricket sounds.
- 12:45Jesus. Wow. It's called the goat's owl? Yeah.
- 13:06I don't know why it would be nicknamed a screech
- 13:09owl when a screech owl is literally a species
- 13:11of owl. For the people that can't see the video,
- 13:14the more than five people that are watching this
- 13:19and the many more that are listening, a text
- 13:23came up on the screen saying ghost owl. So I
- 13:26don't know. This one sounded the most animal
- 13:30to me out of the bunch just personally. Yeah,
- 13:33I feel like you can tell this is like a bird
- 13:36squeaky. Yeah, I mean, yes, yes, definitely.
- 13:40But it is that unsettling thing because barn
- 13:44owls, I mean, you typically find in like structures.
- 13:48like old barns you'll find them in so it's that
- 13:51sense of you're walking into a building or an
- 13:54abandoned structure you're not into like you're
- 13:57thinking maybe there could be something there
- 13:59but like you aren't exactly anticipating it and
- 14:03then you hear this shrieking sound yeah it would
- 14:06put me off edge the first time exactly but then
- 14:10once you hear it then you're like oh okay hang
- 14:12on that is actually a barn owl and not something
- 14:15else so Alright, here's a question for you, Brie.
- 14:19The thing for me that made it sound, I guess,
- 14:23more bird -like was after the first one, I was
- 14:27just like, okay, that's a bird. Okay, that's
- 14:29a bird. Okay, that's a bird. A lot of these recordings
- 14:32that people share, like in that example you shared
- 14:34last year, someone played an audio recording.
- 14:37It was just one single shriek. It wasn't like
- 14:39in that video where there's multiple in a row.
- 14:41Is it common for... birds or animals to just
- 14:44let out one call like that i mean so it depends
- 14:49on the circumstance like i mean definitely if
- 14:51they're spooked there might they might just make
- 14:53one and then fly away or um any really any animal
- 14:59like if they're getting spooked they might make
- 15:01one sound and walk away or fly away or get away
- 15:03whereas like if they're just out in the wilderness
- 15:07and you hear them from a distance It might be
- 15:10several in a row. Honestly, if I were to put
- 15:13myself out of this, like, space and into, like,
- 15:15a cemetery, if I heard one of them, just, like,
- 15:18with no context, just, like, one, I would be
- 15:22like, what the fuck was that? But if I heard,
- 15:25in the span of a minute, seven shrieks in a row,
- 15:28I'd be like, what is that? Oh, that must be an
- 15:31animal type of thing. Yeah, yeah. And I think
- 15:36that's the unsettling thing is, like I said,
- 15:38especially with, like, barn owls or really owls
- 15:41in general they aren't wanting i mean no wildlife
- 15:44wants human contact so when you walk up on an
- 15:48owl or surprise an owl they're gonna make a sound
- 15:51to alert the others and also you that it's there
- 15:56and then fly away like it's not gonna stick around
- 15:59so that's that's kind of the the thing that can
- 16:04be unsettling is like you're not always going
- 16:06to hear repetitive sounds over and over again
- 16:09and also you got to think about these audio clips
- 16:11are exactly that they are audio clips like a
- 16:16lot of them were purposefully captured with clarity
- 16:20that you don't always hear out in the woods so
- 16:25sometimes it's it's distorted by walls like if
- 16:30you're in an abandoned building or the trees
- 16:33or it could be actually miles away but it sounds
- 16:36closer than it actually is or hills valleys like
- 16:40it's all going to distort the sound and make
- 16:43it sound a little different and just having that
- 16:46that nighttime essence is going to make it sound
- 16:49even scarier than it actually is especially if
- 16:53you're intentionally using a shitty recorder
- 16:55like a dr60 because you think that shitty recorders
- 16:59catch more ghosts yes yeah absolutely Okay, no
- 17:05shade. Let's continue here. We got some more
- 17:08audio clips. Three more. Cougar? Yeah, yeah,
- 17:29no, it is a cougar. Yeah. Mountain lion. Yeah,
- 17:34mountain lion cougar. Jesus. Oh, I can recognize
- 17:38that. I mean, that's a good one to be able to
- 17:44recognize. Yeah. Like, you definitely don't want
- 17:46to be in the vicinity of a mountain lion or a
- 17:48cougar. No. I recognize that one. I'd be so scared
- 17:54if I heard that one out in the wild. I'd be like,
- 17:57oh, this thing is near, and I do not like that.
- 17:59Yeah. Yeah, reasonably so. One thing that that
- 18:06also reminds me of is like almost elk calls.
- 18:09I didn't put elk on this list just because most
- 18:12people know what elk sound like. Or maybe they
- 18:15don't. I don't know. I actually don't think I
- 18:19really know what elk sounds like. They kind of
- 18:22make a whistling shriek. Especially the bulls
- 18:25make a whistling shrieking sound. Okay. But,
- 18:31I mean, I don't know. It doesn't sound human
- 18:35or all that scary to me. I don't know. This is
- 18:41also an opinionated list. Right. Alright, let's
- 18:46continue. Let's continue. Okay. This one I just
- 18:50threw on there because it's not necessarily one
- 18:53you're going to hear at night, but it is one
- 18:55that most of us are going to recognize, but if
- 18:58heard in the right circumstance, it would probably
- 19:01catch you off guard. Sounds like witch -like,
- 19:13almost. Like, if you're in a haunted house and
- 19:17you heard that, you might think it's like a witch
- 19:19sound effect. Mm -hmm. It makes me think of Mulan
- 19:25when the when the falcon is coming down the mountain.
- 19:28That would be because it is a red -tailed hawk.
- 19:31Yeah. So. Alright, last one. Okay, this one.
- 19:41Jesus, sorry. It's pretty cute, honestly. It's
- 20:02called a limpkin. I had not heard of this bird
- 20:06before, but it actually is, I guess. So I'm not
- 20:09an idiot. No, no, you're not an idiot. I've never,
- 20:12I've never heard of this bird before. I don't
- 20:14think it's native to Michigan, but I think it
- 20:16is like in the surrounding states. So I kind
- 20:20of did mostly just like Midwest animals. I didn't
- 20:25include like the elk. I didn't include birds
- 20:28or creatures from other countries or continents
- 20:30because there's also other ones out there that
- 20:33sound terrifying to hear in the woods. But I
- 20:37just picked the ones that I knew we would be
- 20:39more familiar with. I almost put elk on there,
- 20:42but I decided not to. Deer do make really weird
- 20:46noises. They don't necessarily make screams.
- 20:49um they make a lot of weird grunting and gurgling
- 20:53sounds and that can sound like a man like making
- 20:58sounds out in the woods well i'm wondering what
- 21:01the heck did i hear when i was like i i've told
- 21:05you guys this story before of this like what
- 21:08sounded like someone screaming in the woods and
- 21:12my parents place in the woods like it Wasn't
- 21:17any of what we just heard. I don't know what
- 21:20it could have been. You haven't shared it on
- 21:22the podcast. What exactly did it sound like?
- 21:25Oh, I haven't shared it on the podcast. I don't
- 21:27think I've heard this story before. Yeah, is
- 21:30this near the not deer experience where the deer
- 21:32stood up on its legs and stared at you? It was
- 21:35in my teenage years. But it's like nearby that
- 21:39spot? Yeah, I mean, it's all in that general
- 21:42area, you know. but it's basically what yeah
- 21:48we determined her a not deer experience for this
- 21:51deer stood up stare at her with red eyes and
- 21:53ran away might have been on two legs what was
- 21:56it david legs douglas douglas douglas the kangaroo
- 22:02yeah but it i don't know it was late at night
- 22:07it was definitely past 10 for sure and uh all
- 22:12of a sudden we just heard this like screaming
- 22:15coming from the woods and we're like what the
- 22:18heck is this because it sounded like it was like
- 22:21a woman almost yelling for her life saying help
- 22:27like it almost sounded like help in the back
- 22:30and it wasn't just us we heard i think the whole
- 22:34the whole houses on our road heard whatever was
- 22:40making this sound and our neighbors even came
- 22:42out on their um in their backyard and was like
- 22:45yelling to ask if like anyone needed help back
- 22:49there or whatever and it went on for like a good
- 22:51like 15 minutes i mean is it possible it could
- 22:58have been someone yelling like help because it
- 23:00sounded too much like a mixture of a woman screaming
- 23:05for their lives and some sort of animal I don't
- 23:08know how to describe it. Like I said, this is
- 23:12only a small list that I compiled. There's a
- 23:14lot of animals out there that make some weird
- 23:17noises. I mean, not even getting into domestic
- 23:21things, like dogs and cats can make some weird
- 23:25noises. Raccoons can make some really weird noises
- 23:30too. They can make some screaming noises, but
- 23:33I feel like... They're pretty identifiable as
- 23:37raccoons. Yeah, I was going to say, I've heard
- 23:38raccoons before. Let me see. What I didn't add
- 23:44on the list, and I almost did, because I'm like,
- 23:47it's a domestic animal, but a lot of people don't
- 23:49think of it as domestic animals and may not recognize
- 23:52the sound as peacocks. Peacocks. Because they
- 23:58do make a weird... But it's more of a honking
- 24:02noise. I don't know. It's a scream honk. Yeah,
- 24:05I know what you're talking about. We've all heard
- 24:07peacocks make sounds at zoos and stuff like that.
- 24:11Yeah. So, I mean, the list goes on and on and
- 24:15on of things that can make noises. And that's
- 24:18why I'm always like, when you're outside, you're
- 24:22doing an investigation outside. You're hiking
- 24:25outside. You don't even necessarily have to be
- 24:26doing a ghost hunt. You're camping. Like, there
- 24:30are so many things that are out in the woods
- 24:33that can make weird noises. And you never know.
- 24:36It could just be someone with a death whistle
- 24:39in the background. Yeah, it could be someone
- 24:42with an Aztec death whistle. We did that once.
- 24:46And we scared the fuck out of a group nearby
- 24:49once. So I found a peacock. I played this. It
- 24:56sounds... insane so let's uh let's listen to
- 25:00this peacock together what do you say go for
- 25:02it that doesn't mean that's actually that's actually
- 25:17a pretty tame peacock sound yeah like I thought
- 25:24it sounded funny, but it makes it look insane
- 25:29and funny. Yeah. But, I mean, most of the time
- 25:35when you hear some sort of weird noise out in
- 25:38the woods, it's a safe bet to never expect that
- 25:44it's actually something paranormal. It's usually
- 25:47some sort of animal or creature making a sound.
- 25:52Unless you're getting like some sort of class
- 25:54A EVP that has actual vocal tone and words to
- 25:59it. I must say, majority of the time, it is something
- 26:03out in the woods making a noise. And you just
- 26:06don't realize that that animal's there because
- 26:09it's dark. Do possums make sound? Yes, they do.
- 26:14Is that any weird? Yeah, their noises are pretty
- 26:18weird. I couldn't describe to you what they sound
- 26:20like. Awesome. I'm curious. Yeah, look up possum.
- 26:24I'm curious. They don't... I feel like they don't
- 26:33make sounds very often. I was gonna say, I never
- 26:35heard a possum make a sound. I don't know that
- 26:37I've ever heard, but I know, like, doing, looking
- 26:40things up earlier, like, one of the things said,
- 26:44like, possums, raccoons, and skunks can make
- 26:47weird noises. And I'm like... Yeah, I guess.
- 26:52So... Alright, there's a whole video. Best of
- 26:58possum screams and noises. Or hissings. And hissings.
- 27:09Best of possum screams and hissings. That's the
- 27:22bark. You got a possum fact? What? Oh, Jesus!
- 27:33Oh, my God! Two -headed possum? Or is that two
- 27:38of them on each other? What's going on here?
- 27:40That's two baby possums together. Knocked, like,
- 27:44a joint or some shit. I'm so confused. Sleepyhead,
- 27:50time to wake up! I thought it was Angela. Jeez!
- 27:56Like, I feel like this isn't loud enough for
- 27:59anyone to be concerned about if they hear this.
- 28:01Yeah. They're horrifying! They sound like a jester,
- 28:07like... I've heard this, and this is scaring
- 28:14me. Okay. So, the scariest one. That music. Oh,
- 28:23the intro music? That was good. Can I have that
- 28:29be the outro music this time? Yes. Is it bad
- 28:32that, like, I found possums to be scarier sounding
- 28:35than mountain lions? If I heard a possum in the
- 28:39woods, I'm running before I hear a mountain lion.
- 28:42Yes, that is very bad, actually. Yeah. Oh, gosh.
- 28:47Because possums aren't going to try too actively.
- 28:50eat you no so a cougar will a cougar will a cougar
- 28:55will stalk you down and you won't even know it
- 28:57yeah it will pounce on you yeah yeah buddy oh
- 29:04yeah and we're not talking about like cougars
- 29:08as in like older women we're talking about like
- 29:11actual like mountain lions i mean if you put
- 29:17it like that Half the ghosts we talked to are
