- 0:16Speaker 2: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Evan, you okay?
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm going to survive.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I was in the back room, and during catch-22, Evan
- 0:27Speaker 3: just flew by.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He's like, I got to go.
- 0:29Speaker 4: All right.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I just want to make sure you're okay. Dustin writes in,
- 0:32Speaker 3: someone tell Poopy Pants Lazard to get a diaper and
- 0:35Speaker 3: power through.
- 0:35Speaker 4: Wow.
- 0:36Speaker 5: Anyway.
- 0:36Speaker 2: That's aggressive.
- 0:37Speaker 6: Now, does it count post-season?
- 0:39Speaker 7: No.
- 0:40Speaker 6: Does not count posies.
- 0:40Speaker 1: No, Patriots did not lose to the Jaguars in the posies.
- 0:42Speaker 6: Oh, they most certainly did.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I like where Deuce is, like, how he's thinking now, though.
- 0:47Speaker 1: You know what I love, though? It's like, you guys
- 0:49Speaker 1: spend too much time together.
- 0:50Speaker 3: No, I love that.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And she, like, started standing up, like, doing like this.
- 0:53Speaker 4: I'm like, what is she doing?
- 0:54Speaker 1: It's a distraction.
- 0:55Speaker 3: A couple of distractions. The name of the hotline should
- 0:59Speaker 3: be changed to the lantern line in homage to Paul
- 1:03Speaker 3: Revere's ride, one by land and two by sea.
- 1:06Speaker 6: That's a bad idea.
- 1:08Speaker 3: It was pretty cool. It was funny.
- 1:10Speaker 6: I like food.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Good stuff.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Don't you have to go?
- 1:12Speaker 3: I don't know who this emailer is. In a polite society,
- 1:17Speaker 3: you introduce yourself. But anyway.
- 1:19Speaker 6: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Presented by Toyota.com.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Patriots. Oh, boy.
- 1:27Speaker 3: It is Tuesday here at Gillette Stadium. And the gang's
- 1:33Speaker 3: all here, ready to go. Evan just came off of
- 1:37Speaker 3: an hour with Barth on Catch-22.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I thought that's why you were sighing.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I'm sure they solved all the Patriots problems in that hour.
- 1:45Speaker 4: No?
- 1:46Speaker 2: We argued a lot about the running game. That was good.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:48Speaker 2: The running game.
- 1:50Speaker 3: It's Paul. It's Evan. It's me. It's Deuce. It's Matt
- 1:53Speaker 3: in the booth. And we've got a lot to talk about,
- 1:56Speaker 3: Patriots Nation. We've got to figure this out. We have
- 2:00Speaker 3: to figure this out and then give our solution to football, right?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I've got it.
- 2:07Speaker 3: You've got the solution?
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I figured it all out yesterday.
- 2:10Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:11Speaker 1: It's a certain coverage they should run, and it'll just
- 2:13Speaker 1: solve everything.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Patriots absolutely had their asses handed to them in Jacksonville, 35-6.
- 2:22Speaker 6: Vulgar right out of the chute.
- 2:24Speaker 3: It was a vulgar game. It was a vulgar game
- 2:27Speaker 3: on all fronts. Nothing was working. It started with the
- 2:31Speaker 3: quarterback and trickled down to all areas. But, you know,
- 2:36Speaker 3: this has gotten bad. This has gotten to a point
- 2:40Speaker 3: now where I think, you know, there's capital C concerns
- 2:46Speaker 3: all around, right? We've got to figure this out.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But I think we can.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I think we can figure this out. Lots of good
- 2:53Speaker 3: teams have really bad games. The question is, is this
- 2:56Speaker 3: a good team? And it's just one bad game. And,
- 3:00Speaker 3: you know, we'll see. But no one on the Patriots
- 3:06Speaker 3: is saying that there's not a problem from the head
- 3:08Speaker 3: coach on down.
- 3:10Speaker 1: High level of concern.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 6: For the entire team.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I really appreciated him saying that because my concern level
- 3:16Speaker 2: is high, but it's better when he says it than
- 3:19Speaker 2: when I say it. And that was the standout quote,
- 3:22Speaker 2: very first question. What's your concern level with Drake May?
- 3:25Speaker 2: My concern level with the entire team is high.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:28Speaker 2: That's where we all are.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And, you know, we've said it on this show that
- 3:33Speaker 3: we think Drake has, you know, a confidence problem, whatever
- 3:38Speaker 3: you want to call it. He's got a mental issue because,
- 3:42Speaker 3: as we've said before, he's got the physical gifts. We've
- 3:45Speaker 3: seen him do it. We saw him do it last year.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I don't care who the competition was. We've seen him
- 3:51Speaker 3: do it last year. We've seen him do it in
- 3:54Speaker 3: practice this spring, I mean this summer. So we know
- 3:59Speaker 3: physically he's capable. There's something going on upstairs, whether it's
- 4:04Speaker 3: a trust issue with his receivers, a trust issue with
- 4:07Speaker 3: his line. in the play calling, whatever, and he's got
- 4:13Speaker 3: to get over it. Because you can break down every play,
- 4:16Speaker 3: and all your guys, Evan, I've been going to town
- 4:20Speaker 3: since Sunday with all 22 breakdowns, and I find some
- 4:26Speaker 3: of them helpful. I really do. I mean, breaking it
- 4:28Speaker 3: down that way. And they're going through every play, and
- 4:33Speaker 3: not every play is Drake's fault. There's no doubt about that.
- 4:36Speaker 3: But He can't be a reason why things aren't working.
- 4:41Speaker 3: He's the quarterback, and he's going to be in line
- 4:45Speaker 3: for a huge contract. So while everything else is on
- 4:50Speaker 3: fire around him, if that's the case, he can't be.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And he's contributing to the mess. There's just no doubt
- 4:58Speaker 3: about it. And so they've got to figure this out,
- 5:01Speaker 3: and maybe in the next two hours we can figure
- 5:03Speaker 3: it out. Along with the help from you, our listeners
- 5:06Speaker 3: and our viewers.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I've been racking my brain for 48 hours and I
- 5:10Speaker 2: got nothing. You got nothing.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I heard A.J.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Brown was in the locker room yesterday. That's good.
- 5:15Speaker 6: When Brown was?
- 5:16Speaker 3: A.J.
- 5:17Speaker 8: Brown.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Oh, A.J.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Brown.
- 5:18Speaker 2: No, the one on our team. A.J. Brown, I mean,
- 5:22Speaker 2: that's where I'm at now. Can they just survive the
- 5:26Speaker 2: next two, three, four weeks, whatever it takes, so that
- 5:31Speaker 2: when A.J. Brown comes back, they're still in it? You know, like,
- 5:34Speaker 2: can they get to a point where, okay, if he
- 5:37Speaker 2: comes back that Chicago game, you know, in October or
- 5:41Speaker 2: maybe the following week or something like that, that they're
- 5:44Speaker 2: at least... still within striking distance of going on a
- 5:48Speaker 2: run to make the postseason. Otherwise, I mean, I just
- 5:52Speaker 2: look at it right now, and the quarterback's the tip
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the iceberg. And Josh McDaniels is right next to him.
- 5:57Speaker 2: So those two guys are the head of the snake.
- 6:00Speaker 2: But the entire offense right now just doesn't feel like
- 6:04Speaker 2: a quarterback-friendly environment. I think they have issues all over
- 6:08Speaker 2: the place offensively. I don't think they have enough firepower.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I don't think that the receivers are detailed enough. I
- 6:15Speaker 2: don't think that the route combinations and the spacing and
- 6:18Speaker 2: the landmarks and all that stuff that we talk about
- 6:21Speaker 2: is right now is buttoned up. I think the offensive
- 6:24Speaker 2: line is a concern. I think the right side of
- 6:26Speaker 2: the offensive line specifically is a major concern. I said
- 6:29Speaker 2: we argued about the run game on catch 22. They
- 6:32Speaker 2: basically have a bottom five run game by every statistical metric.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So he doesn't have a run game. He doesn't have A.J.
- 6:38Speaker 9: Brown.
- 6:38Speaker 2: And right now he doesn't have the right side of
- 6:40Speaker 2: the offensive line. Other than that, everything's great.
- 6:42Speaker 3: So I've made a lot of Red Sox analogies this
- 6:46Speaker 3: year because I watch every game. And one of the
- 6:49Speaker 3: analogies that came to mind is when the Red Sox
- 6:51Speaker 3: were at their worst before June 25th, I just, in
- 6:55Speaker 3: my mind, I said, they can't be this bad. I
- 6:57Speaker 3: know they're not this bad. And I'm saying the same
- 7:01Speaker 3: thing about the Patriots. They're not as bad as they
- 7:03Speaker 3: showed on Sunday. I know they're not. I know they're
- 7:06Speaker 3: going to get better. I'm just wondering how, just like
- 7:10Speaker 3: I was then. But I know they're not that bad
- 7:13Speaker 3: a team. The other analogy I make with baseball is,
- 7:18Speaker 3: you know, the Red Sox needed kind of a miracle
- 7:21Speaker 3: turnaround during the season to get into the playoffs. And,
- 7:26Speaker 3: you know, good luck tonight, game one against the Yankees.
- 7:30Speaker 3: But that's 162-game season. They had time to do it.
- 7:35Speaker 3: It's a 17-game season, and I know we're going into
- 7:38Speaker 3: week four, but there's an urgency here. You know, they're 1-2.
- 7:42Speaker 3: There's a lot of football left, but they don't have
- 7:45Speaker 3: the time to get things right like you do in
- 7:48Speaker 3: baseball or basketball or hockey. It's only 17 games, and
- 7:53Speaker 3: right now the Bills are 3-0. You're 1-2, and you've
- 7:56Speaker 3: got the Bills coming up. This is a huge game.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Huge game.
- 8:00Speaker 3: It's a huge game in a 17-week season, even though
- 8:03Speaker 3: it's only week four.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a huge game. And I mean, I echo
- 8:06Speaker 1: Evan's thoughts. I mean, I liked what Evan wrote yesterday.
- 8:09Speaker 1: It was like this is beyond like talking about, well, like,
- 8:12Speaker 1: how do they beat cover three or we need more
- 8:14Speaker 1: of this? You know, these kind of runs like it's
- 8:16Speaker 1: it's beyond that right now. And I think what was
- 8:18Speaker 1: kind of concerning to me is just how it felt
- 8:21Speaker 1: like after the Drake fumble. and then the big Parker
- 8:25Speaker 1: Washington play, it felt like that was where the game
- 8:27Speaker 1: just kind of completely revolved and turned, where it felt like,
- 8:30Speaker 1: you know, it felt like two competitive teams kind of
- 8:32Speaker 1: going back and forth the first, like, three possessions, and
- 8:36Speaker 1: then it was all Jacksonville, and I just, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I'm looking for the defensive side of the ball to
- 8:41Speaker 1: be able to pick the offensive side of the ball up, but,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean, Evan rattled off all the issues for the offense.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I don't think the defense is too far behind with
- 8:49Speaker 1: some of their issues, especially up front along the line
- 8:52Speaker 1: of scrimmage, so it's How do you fix it? It
- 8:55Speaker 1: feels like we were just here a couple years ago,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and I thought last year we kind of put these
- 8:59Speaker 1: days behind us, and we said, well, it can get
- 9:02Speaker 1: bad again, but we know we have the quarterback, and
- 9:04Speaker 1: that's the most important piece.
- 9:05Speaker 3: And right now we're wondering about that. Here's where coaching
- 9:08Speaker 3: comes into it, and I think that I totally agree.
- 9:12Speaker 3: When Drake had that play, I think the air went
- 9:16Speaker 3: out of the sails for both sides of the ball,
- 9:18Speaker 3: including the defense, but that can't happen. That can't happen,
- 9:21Speaker 3: and that's up to Vrabel. and Zach Kor and everybody
- 9:25Speaker 3: to keep the defense up there. I'm not going to
- 9:28Speaker 3: say they gave up, but they didn't play with the
- 9:32Speaker 3: same intensity that they did with those first three drives.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Through the first three, I felt pretty good about our defense.
- 9:37Speaker 6: First two drives. Third drive was a touchdown.
- 9:40Speaker 3: When you get a coach like Liam Cohen, you expect
- 9:44Speaker 3: that scripted first drive to have some success. And I
- 9:47Speaker 3: thought the defense did well in that drive. They did
- 9:50Speaker 3: well the next drive. I would think, okay, we're going
- 9:55Speaker 3: to be able to at least stay with this team
- 9:58Speaker 3: until we can get our offense right. right today and
- 10:01Speaker 3: the offense just imploded and I think everything else fell
- 10:04Speaker 3: apart after.
- 10:05Speaker 6: That I think there was an implosion top to bottom
- 10:08Speaker 6: all three phases and I didn't think the game was
- 10:11Speaker 6: overly competitive and I didn't expect that I thought the
- 10:15Speaker 6: Jackson would win the game for a drive You know,
- 10:18Speaker 6: I mean, they forced a punt on the first two possessions,
- 10:21Speaker 6: and that was it. That was basically it. There was, like,
- 10:24Speaker 6: one play after that where the ball goes off the
- 10:26Speaker 6: tight end's hands and Marcus Jones picks it off. Every
- 10:29Speaker 6: other drive after that, they scored. And five for five
- 10:33Speaker 6: in the red zone. You can't even get to the
- 10:35Speaker 6: red zone. They're going five for five in the red zone.
- 10:37Speaker 6: The Patriots have been in the red zone six times
- 10:38Speaker 6: all season, and one of them was Sunday when they
- 10:41Speaker 6: took over in the red zone with a pick three. Like,
- 10:44Speaker 6: they can't do anything offensively. In this particular game, they
- 10:48Speaker 6: couldn't do much right defensively. Now, I'm going to put
- 10:51Speaker 6: an asterisk on it because I do think there's some
- 10:54Speaker 6: missing personnel that had a role in the defense. I'm
- 10:57Speaker 6: going to give the defense a little bit of a pass.
- 11:00Speaker 6: You miss Craig Woodson. You miss Draymond Jones. You ask
- 11:02Speaker 6: your two edge guys who are both young players to
- 11:04Speaker 6: go basically wire to wire. This is what Mike Vrabel
- 11:07Speaker 6: was talking about in the summer, about depth. So I'm
- 11:12Speaker 6: going to give them a little bit of a pass
- 11:14Speaker 6: and say this was a bad game for the defense.
- 11:17Speaker 6: This is now three games in a row offensively where
- 11:19Speaker 6: they just haven't looked right. Now, this was probably the
- 11:21Speaker 6: worst one offensively from top to bottom, you know, the
- 11:25Speaker 6: entirety of the game. I don't know what the answer
- 11:30Speaker 6: is because the problem is if you could just say, well,
- 11:34Speaker 6: the quarterback is not playing well, but there are opportunities left, right,
- 11:38Speaker 6: and center. Everything else, you know, like they're running the
- 11:41Speaker 6: ball well. They're pass protection. Well, the quarterback's just missing
- 11:43Speaker 6: open guys. There's times where guys are open and Drake
- 11:47Speaker 6: is missing them. There are times when they're not open
- 11:50Speaker 6: and Drake is forced to hold the ball and the
- 11:51Speaker 6: pass protection is breaking down. There are times they're trying
- 11:54Speaker 6: to run the ball and they can't. It's everything offensively.
- 11:58Speaker 6: The pass protection has not been great unless they keep
- 12:01Speaker 6: extra guys in to help. When they put guys out
- 12:04Speaker 6: and they have opportunities to make plays, they're just not
- 12:07Speaker 6: making them. Last year, those tight window throws were completed
- 12:09Speaker 6: at such a high percentage that Matt Collins has a
- 12:12Speaker 6: chance to make a touchdown catch in the end zone
- 12:14Speaker 6: on a throw that I thought was pretty good from
- 12:15Speaker 6: Drake May. Not an easy play by any stretch of
- 12:18Speaker 6: the imagination. But their guy, Parker Washington, who's not a superstar.
- 12:23Speaker 6: He's a good player.
- 12:24Speaker 1: He's getting there.
- 12:24Speaker 6: He makes that catch in the end zone on third
- 12:26Speaker 6: and 17 or whatever it was. On their third try,
- 12:30Speaker 6: you know, after two penalties in the red zone, they
- 12:32Speaker 6: overcome that. And a guy makes a play. You had
- 12:35Speaker 6: an opportunity to do that and you couldn't. And, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 6: I think it's just snowballing like you said, Fred.
- 12:40Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Talk about the running game. If the passing game was...
- 12:45Speaker 3: At least maybe you could have a semblance of a
- 12:47Speaker 3: running game. But they don't. And one of the things
- 12:51Speaker 3: that just came to mind is... I'm wondering if the
- 12:55Speaker 3: scouting report on the Patriots running game is out such that.
- 13:00Speaker 3: It is that neither of these guys, Henderson or Stevenson,
- 13:05Speaker 3: are going to be able to improvise. It just seems
- 13:09Speaker 3: like they run... the other team swarms to the point
- 13:13Speaker 3: of attack and there's no balance and they're running right
- 13:17Speaker 3: into harm's way where, you know, I hate, you know,
- 13:21Speaker 3: when people do this, but we watch these other teams
- 13:24Speaker 3: running backs and they seem to be able to have
- 13:27Speaker 3: the vision to, to bounce it once in a while. And,
- 13:31Speaker 3: and see that there's nothing there and go left or right.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Our guys don't do that. Maybe I'm being overdramatic about it,
- 13:38Speaker 3: but it just seems that way. It just seems that,
- 13:40Speaker 3: you know, you hit the hole or you hit where
- 13:42Speaker 3: this hole's supposed to be, and if it's not there,
- 13:45Speaker 3: it's not there. Don't... Don't go off script. But I
- 13:49Speaker 3: think the scouting report is out that other teams know
- 13:51Speaker 3: that's what we're doing. I don't know.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I felt that way with Henderson. I mean, to me,
- 13:55Speaker 1: that's Henderson. That's kind of the type of player he is, though.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I mean, I think I said it after week one
- 13:59Speaker 1: where I just felt like he goes north-south, whether it's
- 14:01Speaker 1: there or not, and he's going to go. You know,
- 14:03Speaker 1: he doesn't have the best vision. But, you know, again,
- 14:05Speaker 1: that goes back to he's explosive offensively. I don't know.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I'm struggling right now to.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Find the answers. I mean, Stevenson can break tackles, and
- 14:11Speaker 3: sometimes he powers through, but he doesn't make stuff.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Well, it's a lot of that. He's getting hit in
- 14:15Speaker 1: the backfield, too, a lot. But I also hear your point, Fred,
- 14:19Speaker 1: and I hear so many people, including Troy on our show,
- 14:21Speaker 1: that tell me how great Ramondre is. And I agree,
- 14:24Speaker 1: but there's something missing to me with him. And I
- 14:27Speaker 1: don't think it's so simple as... He just has the
- 14:30Speaker 1: most inept offensive line in the league, and no one
- 14:32Speaker 1: could run with this. I'm just stuck because everyone tells
- 14:36Speaker 1: me how good he would be if he had an
- 14:37Speaker 1: offensive line, and it's been like four years now. And
- 14:40Speaker 1: I think that this can be a functional offensive line.
- 14:43Speaker 1: It was really tough on the right side last week.
- 14:45Speaker 1: But I hear what you're saying.
- 14:47Speaker 3: It's really hard to go east-west if you have two
- 14:51Speaker 3: hands on the ball. That's a tough running style to
- 14:55Speaker 3: improvise with.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Slash.
- 14:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 14:58Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 14:59Speaker 2: The run game is the bane of my existence right now. Schematically,
- 15:04Speaker 2: it's boring, predictable, just not innovative, not creative enough. They're
- 15:11Speaker 2: running backs. I'm with you, Fred. You got to run
- 15:16Speaker 2: where they aren't.
- 15:18Speaker 6: There was one play in particular with Henderson that they
- 15:21Speaker 6: showed the replay, and you saw it live. There was
- 15:23Speaker 6: a gap. just to the left of where he ran
- 15:25Speaker 6: head down and he had his head down and ran
- 15:27Speaker 6: right into the pile.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 6: Basically.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 2: You know, they're running a lot of duo. So they're
- 15:32Speaker 2: double teaming on the inside and they're getting the combination
- 15:36Speaker 2: box up to the second level. Once you get the
- 15:38Speaker 2: double teams established and you see other teams run do
- 15:42Speaker 2: a lot too. It's probably the most popular run scheme
- 15:44Speaker 2: in the league at this point. And to your point, Fred,
- 15:48Speaker 2: Backs like James Cook, Kenneth Walker, those types of guys,
- 15:51Speaker 2: when they see the edges pinching in to play the
- 15:54Speaker 2: double teams, they bounce outside. they, they get the corner
- 15:58Speaker 2: and they bounce outside and that, then that keeps those
- 16:01Speaker 2: guys honest. And then that creates more space inside for
- 16:04Speaker 2: the guys on the double teams. And now, so now
- 16:06Speaker 2: you can go up the middle sometimes too. But to me, like,
- 16:10Speaker 2: you know, you're looking at, let's just take the bills
- 16:12Speaker 2: because they're playing them this week. The bills are the
- 16:14Speaker 2: number one rush team in football right now. Number one
- 16:17Speaker 2: in EPA, number one in success rate, number one in
- 16:19Speaker 2: pretty much every metric in the, in the run game.
- 16:22Speaker 2: They are also number three in motion rate. They also
- 16:26Speaker 2: have different runs that they use, both with Allen and Cook,
- 16:31Speaker 2: that are complementary to their base runs. When I watch
- 16:34Speaker 2: the Patriots, I watch the back. Drake may turn his back,
- 16:37Speaker 2: hand the ball off, and I watch them run right
- 16:39Speaker 2: into the middle of the line. 15 times a game.
- 16:43Speaker 2: To nowhere.
- 16:44Speaker 6: That's what I saw Sunday.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And I think that's the scouting report. Other teams know
- 16:48Speaker 3: that's going to happen. They're not worried about the edge
- 16:50Speaker 3: that much. I think I have a one-game... Idea that,
- 16:56Speaker 3: I don't know if we're ready to do this. This is,
- 16:59Speaker 3: you know, it relates kind of like.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I keep talking about the run game. I'm going to
- 17:02Speaker 2: get myself in trouble.
- 17:03Speaker 3: It relates a little bit to the running game. And
- 17:06Speaker 3: I'm not saying trick plays or anything like that, you know,
- 17:09Speaker 3: end arounds to try to get the edge. But I'm
- 17:12Speaker 3: saying this game to Drake May, go ahead and run it.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Go ahead and run it. If you have any doubt,
- 17:19Speaker 3: just run. I'd rather have you take three yards and
- 17:21Speaker 3: slide than have a negative play or no gain. When
- 17:26Speaker 3: you want to run, go ahead and run this game.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Maybe that will get him feeling a little bit more
- 17:32Speaker 3: confident and a little bit more, I'm having fun out here.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 17:36Speaker 6: I felt like they had some design runs for Drake
- 17:38Speaker 6: May in this game.
- 17:39Speaker 2: The Atman, they didn't go well.
- 17:42Speaker 3: I'm not talking about options.
- 17:43Speaker 6: I'm talking about they had him running.
- 17:46Speaker 3: No, I know. One was an option type of thing
- 17:49Speaker 3: where he pulled it back and ran. It was a
- 17:51Speaker 3: design run.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 17:53Speaker 6: I think he scrambles. I think he runs. I think
- 17:56Speaker 6: he's seeing more zones than he did last year, and
- 17:58Speaker 6: that is harder to scramble against.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 6: I think last year he saw a lot of man.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Sorry, Ev.
- 18:04Speaker 2: No, go ahead. I... I think that you have two
- 18:07Speaker 2: options here. Either they need to be more creative schematically
- 18:10Speaker 2: with how they're running it traditionally, or they need Drake
- 18:12Speaker 2: May to be involved in the run game more. because
- 18:15Speaker 2: what they're doing right now is not working like that.
- 18:18Speaker 2: That is apparent. Honestly, it hasn't worked since the beginning
- 18:21Speaker 2: of 2025. They didn't run the ball well last year either.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So it hasn't worked in two years. So they have
- 18:26Speaker 2: to train something with the run game. Either Drake may,
- 18:30Speaker 2: they need to go to like a shotgun running game
- 18:32Speaker 2: where they're using him as a lever against the defense
- 18:35Speaker 2: and design quarterback runs, RPOs, zone reads, things of that nature,
- 18:40Speaker 2: or the boots need to be like a way more
- 18:42Speaker 2: prevalent part of the offense.
- 18:44Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Where you're running outside zone and you're keeping the backside
- 18:47Speaker 2: honest by booting Drake May 15, 20% of the time. Like,
- 18:51Speaker 2: not just sometimes, but often.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:54Speaker 2: You know, like, one of those two things needs to happen.
- 18:56Speaker 3: I mean, the left side of the line seems to
- 18:58Speaker 3: be okay.
- 18:59Speaker 2: And pass protection. No one's run blocking.
- 19:01Speaker 3: So bring over the tight end. Bring over that extra tackle,
- 19:05Speaker 3: you know, and let's go. Just run them behind it.
- 19:08Speaker 4: It just.
- 19:10Speaker 2: To me, the biggest thing with the run game, and
- 19:12Speaker 2: Barth and I were arguing about this, because he's just like,
- 19:16Speaker 2: the offensive line doesn't move anybody. And there's some truth
- 19:19Speaker 2: to that, but I'm just getting kind of sick and
- 19:21Speaker 2: tired of hearing, we're just going to block them. We're
- 19:24Speaker 2: just going to dig them out.
- 19:25Speaker 6: I like your motion stuff.
- 19:27Speaker 3: That would stall that in a week?
- 19:29Speaker 2: It did, but just sitting here saying to these guys,
- 19:34Speaker 2: just blow defensive lines off the ball better.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Come on.
- 19:39Speaker 2: That's all we're going to give them to work with?
- 19:41Speaker 2: We're not going to give them anything else? Just to say,
- 19:44Speaker 2: your double team's just got to be better. That's what
- 19:46Speaker 2: these defenses are expecting.
- 19:48Speaker 3: I have heard linemen... offensive linemen say, when we know
- 19:52Speaker 3: going in that it's going to be a heavy running game,
- 19:55Speaker 3: it helps us. Because you get that mindset. We're going
- 19:58Speaker 3: to fire off.
- 19:59Speaker 6: Don't you think there have been some heavy run games
- 20:01Speaker 6: that they've tried?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Lately, they're taking your advice and passing on early downs.
- 20:07Speaker 6: The whole first game... It was runs on first down.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I know, the first game.
- 20:10Speaker 6: You don't think the game plan going into that game,
- 20:12Speaker 6: they knew they were going to be running the ball?
- 20:13Speaker 3: That game, but not this game. This last game, they.
- 20:16Speaker 6: They ran the ball plenty, just ineffectively.
- 20:18Speaker 3: They did, but on early downs, they were throwing the ball.
- 20:20Speaker 6: What's the difference if... You know you're going to run
- 20:22Speaker 6: it a certain amount of times. That should get you
- 20:25Speaker 6: in your right mindset.
- 20:26Speaker 3: I know, but.
- 20:27Speaker 6: What's the difference if it's first down or second down?
- 20:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's... But when you don't have success on early downs,
- 20:31Speaker 3: it hurts. It hurts all the play calling, you know?
- 20:35Speaker 2: It just.
- 20:36Speaker 6: But you're supposed to have a good mindset if you
- 20:38Speaker 6: know you're going to run the game.
- 20:39Speaker 3: No, I'm talking about.
- 20:40Speaker 6: I like Evan's thing with moving guys around. So you have... Obviously,
- 20:46Speaker 6: Hunter Henry is not the most physical tight end out there.
- 20:50Speaker 6: He's not a great blocker. Why not try to help
- 20:52Speaker 6: him out a little bit and maybe get him on
- 20:53Speaker 6: the move so maybe he has a better angle on
- 20:55Speaker 6: a block? Again, that's not my expertise.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I think motions and shifts do a bunch of different things.
- 21:04Speaker 2: The first thing is that the defense has to react
- 21:08Speaker 2: somehow to how you're motioning. So they're either going to
- 21:10Speaker 2: run with the motion and they're going to follow the
- 21:12Speaker 2: motion or they're going to bump the motion where the
- 21:15Speaker 2: defense is going to shift its formation based off of
- 21:18Speaker 2: the motion. Either way, all you're doing is you're creating space.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Like you're just taking a guy out of the box
- 21:24Speaker 2: with the motion or you're creating space because they're vacating
- 21:27Speaker 2: space to shift to the motion.
- 21:28Speaker 6: I like that too.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So like there's all different things that motion involves. And
- 21:33Speaker 2: you're also like, you know, Paul's point, you're giving guys momentum,
- 21:36Speaker 2: you're creating angles, you're giving guys head starts into blocks
- 21:40Speaker 2: as well. But like when you go and you watch Buffalo,
- 21:42Speaker 2: when you go and you watched Indianapolis, when you go
- 21:45Speaker 2: and you watch Chicago last night, go watch like how
- 21:49Speaker 2: creative they are running the football. Like, go watch all
- 21:52Speaker 2: the different moving parts in concert. Go watch the San
- 21:55Speaker 2: Francisco 49ers run game. And, like, you know, all the
- 21:59Speaker 2: different window dressing and all the different misdirection and the
- 22:02Speaker 2: way that they're blocking schemes, you know, are just work
- 22:04Speaker 2: in concert. And, like, it's not just I'm stronger than
- 22:08Speaker 2: you and I'm just going to move you off the ball.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Right, because everyone's strong.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:12Speaker 6: Can I ask a quick question in regards to what
- 22:15Speaker 6: it's EPA?
- 22:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Yes.
- 22:17Speaker 6: That's where they're down the bottom?
- 22:20Speaker 2: In everything.
- 22:20Speaker 6: And you were saying Buffalo is number one in that.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Yes.
- 22:24Speaker 6: So does that account for quarterback runs, too, or is
- 22:27Speaker 6: there a separate thing that they sort of DVOA it,
- 22:30Speaker 6: like strength of schedule or whatever?
- 22:32Speaker 2: So it accounts for designed runs by the quarterback.
- 22:36Speaker 6: Designed runs by the quarterback, not scrambles.
- 22:38Speaker 3: But don't you think that the threat that Josh Allen
- 22:42Speaker 3: poses to a defense helps him? The run game.
- 22:44Speaker 6: Of course.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Of course.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Absolutely. And I think the same thing could be true
- 22:48Speaker 6: with your suggestion with Drake May if they got him
- 22:51Speaker 6: more involved. I do think that they had more designed
- 22:54Speaker 6: runs in this game for Drake May than I can
- 22:56Speaker 6: remember specific individual games.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Yeah, they ran it twice in the low red zone.
- 23:01Speaker 2: They had the quarterback draw that he fumbled on. And
- 23:03Speaker 2: then they had the zone read where he blew the read.
- 23:06Speaker 2: So both plays, I would say not great.
- 23:09Speaker 3: That's the one he went to the outside. He got
- 23:11Speaker 3: like no game.
- 23:12Speaker 6: So like, just, you know, this is very nitpicky. This
- 23:14Speaker 6: is a very nitpicky kind of thing.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Probably not.
- 23:16Speaker 6: There's been a lot of talking about like the fumbles, right?
- 23:20Speaker 6: Mike and I watching the game on Sunday, he fumbled
- 23:23Speaker 6: the ball at least two or three times that he
- 23:24Speaker 6: did not get credit for fumbling. Just because he recovers
- 23:28Speaker 6: it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
- 23:29Speaker 2: They changed the one on the draw. The one on
- 23:33Speaker 2: the quarterback draw is now officially.
- 23:34Speaker 6: In the game. He had one on the sideline that
- 23:39Speaker 6: he lost before. That was close. He's not finishing plays
- 23:45Speaker 6: with the ball in his hand. It's troubling me. I
- 23:48Speaker 6: don't know what.
- 23:49Speaker 3: That's all about. It's not like something new. He fumbled
- 23:53Speaker 3: a lot last year, too. By the way, the whole
- 23:55Speaker 3: blood on the ball, David Andrews said that's BS. I mean,
- 23:59Speaker 3: not that there wasn't blood on the ball, but that
- 24:01Speaker 3: shouldn't cause you to have it slip out.
- 24:04Speaker 6: It was a very odd comment.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it was.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I think all of the things that we're talking about
- 24:11Speaker 2: are on the table. I think everything is probably on
- 24:13Speaker 2: the table, even for them down the hall. I'm sure
- 24:15Speaker 2: they're trying to think of literally anything to do.
- 24:20Speaker 3: To me, job number one is getting Drake's head right.
- 24:24Speaker 3: And He's got to look at every play as an
- 24:27Speaker 3: opportunity to help the team rather than a chance to
- 24:31Speaker 3: screw up. And I think he's looking at the latter
- 24:34Speaker 3: right now. Like every play is I can't screw up
- 24:36Speaker 3: instead of here's a chance for me to help my
- 24:39Speaker 3: team win.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:40Speaker 3: He's in a bad mind. Like, I don't know. I'm
- 24:43Speaker 3: not in his head, but it seems to me that
- 24:45Speaker 3: he's in a bad mind.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Well, like you said, the second something goes wrong, it
- 24:48Speaker 1: seems to spiral on him. And I mean, to Paul's point,
- 24:52Speaker 1: the game was bad. The press conference to me that.
- 24:54Speaker 1: told me more about his mental state than anything. Like
- 24:57Speaker 1: watching him play bad. We've seen bits and pieces of that,
- 24:59Speaker 1: but in the, in the press conference, he seemed like
- 25:02Speaker 1: he was swimming in it right now.
- 25:03Speaker 3: He's got to get mad. He's got to get mad. I, I,
- 25:06Speaker 3: At this point, I would rather see him, instead of
- 25:10Speaker 3: with his head down, walking to the sideline, smashing a
- 25:13Speaker 3: helmet and knocking over a Gatorade jug, just getting furious.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I mean, I felt pretty furious. That was what was
- 25:21Speaker 1: so maddening, and I think why so many of us
- 25:24Speaker 1: in the fan base are fired up. It was the
- 25:25Speaker 1: Spider-Man meme of the comedy of errors, and it was
- 25:28Speaker 1: just one thing after another. I made the joke that
- 25:31Speaker 1: I didn't have Kyle Williams versus the sideline as a
- 25:33Speaker 1: key matchup in this game, but it clearly was on
- 25:35Speaker 1: at least two occasions. Those are the things where it's
- 25:38Speaker 1: like it just keeps going wrong and then it's your
- 25:41Speaker 1: turn to make a mistake. And here we are in
- 25:43Speaker 1: the show. We're a half hour in and we're still–
- 25:44Speaker 1: it's like you just keep pulling threads out to be
- 25:46Speaker 1: mad about it. And then this was wrong and then
- 25:47Speaker 1: this stinks.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And again, it's not all Drake, but it starts with Drake.
- 25:51Speaker 3: But I'll give you another example of where I think–
- 25:55Speaker 3: He'd have a right to be furious. It was that
- 25:57Speaker 3: back shoulder to Williams that turned out to be an interception.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Williams didn't do the right thing on that play.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Neither did Drake.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if he didn't do the
- 26:04Speaker 2: right thing. He just didn't get open.
- 26:05Speaker 6: He wasn't open and the throw was late.
- 26:07Speaker 2: But it was just a bad route. I mean, he
- 26:11Speaker 2: just didn't run the corner off and didn't get open.
- 26:13Speaker 6: That's a bad play by the quarterback, too, though.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Why?
- 26:15Speaker 6: Because the throw was way late. You can't be late
- 26:17Speaker 6: on the sideline.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Late and inside.
- 26:20Speaker 6: And he had another inside back shoulder throw to Dobbs
- 26:22Speaker 6: in the red zone earlier in the game.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Also inside.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Needed to be outside, and the throw was in the
- 26:26Speaker 6: wrong spot.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he threw one at the beginning of
- 26:28Speaker 2: the game to Matt Collins. That was perfect. Back shoulder
- 26:31Speaker 2: throw right high into his back shoulder.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Yep, I know.
- 26:34Speaker 2: And I put it in my breakdown because it's like
- 26:36Speaker 2: the juxtaposition of those two plays.
- 26:38Speaker 3: He seems to throw better on the move than he does.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Well, he missed Pop Douglas on the move, too.
- 26:43Speaker 1: So, I mean, how many times are they spamming that play, though,
- 26:45Speaker 1: where they come down on the tackle and they come out?
- 26:48Speaker 1: I mean, get him on the move.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It's the best thing they got going schematically right now,
- 26:51Speaker 2: and they can't hit the throw.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and how many times do they have
- 26:55Speaker 1: three guys in the route because they're protecting him? Like,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I saw a concerted effort to try to, like, make
- 27:00Speaker 1: things a little easier for him, and it's still hard.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Yeah, some things that looked like, and I know you
- 27:06Speaker 6: broke it down. it looked like they had some things
- 27:08Speaker 6: dialed up. So the ball was supposed to come out
- 27:10Speaker 6: real quick, easy throws, quick ones. And then it seems
- 27:13Speaker 6: like he's holding it. Like even when it's there.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I would say like a couple of times, maybe. Yeah.
- 27:19Speaker 2: On that note too, like just to add it to
- 27:21Speaker 2: the calamity, like the, the cup blocking is like, it's enough.
- 27:24Speaker 1: It's enough for the cup blocking. The guy gets up
- 27:27Speaker 1: and comes back and pressures him.
- 27:28Speaker 3: I'm like, right.
- 27:29Speaker 6: It's supposed to be out.
- 27:31Speaker 2: But he misses the cup block. So the guy's hands
- 27:34Speaker 2: are in the passing lane. So he can't throw it. Like,
- 27:36Speaker 2: you know, he's supposed to cut the guy to get
- 27:38Speaker 2: him on the ground so that the guy's hands are
- 27:40Speaker 2: down so that he can throw the slant or he
- 27:42Speaker 2: can throw the curl or whatever the case may be.
- 27:45Speaker 2: And they're not getting him down. And honestly, like to me,
- 27:48Speaker 2: the cut blocking is like a practice. You can't practice
- 27:51Speaker 2: cut blocking. They don't practice it because it's dangerous. So
- 27:54Speaker 2: they don't practice cut blocking. And then they go, they
- 27:57Speaker 2: get into the game. And if you watch practice, they
- 27:59Speaker 2: kind of like the offensive line, like kind of like
- 28:01Speaker 2: fake cut blocks. They like do like, like they kind
- 28:04Speaker 2: of do the motion, but they don't actually cut the guy.
- 28:07Speaker 2: So you're not actually practicing it. And then you're asking
- 28:09Speaker 2: them to execute it in, in a live game setting.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And like more, I mean, every.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Games, every team's in the same situation.
- 28:17Speaker 2: And they're not cut blocking. You know, like they're not
- 28:19Speaker 2: doing that as much as the Patriots are doing it.
- 28:21Speaker 2: So they're running quick game and they're trying to cut
- 28:24Speaker 2: block the ends and it's hit or miss. Like it's 50%
- 28:28Speaker 2: of the time they're whiffing, you know, whether it's Morgan
- 28:30Speaker 2: Moses or Lomu lift on one, like it's the same thing.
- 28:35Speaker 4: So.
- 28:36Speaker 2: You know, there's just a lot of different things. But
- 28:38Speaker 2: like I just bigger picture, I think my concern level
- 28:42Speaker 2: is more about infrastructure around Drake May than it is
- 28:46Speaker 2: with Drake May himself. I think week to week, like
- 28:48Speaker 2: now that we're in it, this is like he's the
- 28:51Speaker 2: biggest problem with the team. But like my concern is
- 28:54Speaker 2: that I'm watching the same movie that I watch with
- 28:56Speaker 2: Mac Jones. where the situation around the quarterback just deteriorates,
- 29:01Speaker 2: where they don't have enough weapons, they don't have a
- 29:04Speaker 2: good offensive line, they have a stale scheme, and then
- 29:07Speaker 2: all of a sudden the quarterback is just broken.
- 29:09Speaker 3: I hope the difference, though, between then and now is
- 29:13Speaker 3: better coaching.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I hope the difference is that Drake Mays is better
- 29:16Speaker 2: than Mac Jones.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Well, that, but I hope he's getting better support.
- 29:19Speaker 11: I hope.
- 29:20Speaker 3: But, you know, like, Even the play that you broke
- 29:26Speaker 3: down on X, it was a drop nine situation where
- 29:30Speaker 3: they only rushed two. The Patriots had both guys double team.
- 29:34Speaker 3: There was time. Mack, I mean Mack. Here we go.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Drake steps up. He's got plenty of time. of time.
- 29:40Speaker 3: He dumps it off to Douglas for maybe a two-yard gain.
- 29:43Speaker 3: He had Stevenson to his right. He's a right-handed quarterback,
- 29:47Speaker 3: wide open.
- 29:48Speaker 2: So let's talk about it, right?
- 29:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:51Speaker 2: The right side of the field, they're running Haas, right?
- 29:53Speaker 2: They're running Haas juke. So they have the hitch, the seam,
- 29:56Speaker 2: the juke route by the number three, the defense is
- 29:58Speaker 2: playing split safety coverage. They're playing quarters behind their drop
- 30:02Speaker 2: nine type of scheme. So to his right, he's four
- 30:05Speaker 2: over three, right? They have the box on that side
- 30:07Speaker 2: of the field. The slot defender has the flat. Okay.
- 30:11Speaker 2: The Mike linebacker is going to have the juke, right?
- 30:13Speaker 2: The safety is going to be in the seam. The
- 30:15Speaker 2: other corner is going to be over the top of
- 30:16Speaker 2: the vertical. So when you look at it from a
- 30:18Speaker 2: quarterback perspective, it's, Henderson's not open.
- 30:22Speaker 3: But he was.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Okay, but he was.
- 30:24Speaker 3: You're going to get him the ball, and he's going
- 30:26Speaker 3: to have at least eight yards.
- 30:28Speaker 2: I understand, Fred, but you're not playing Madden.
- 30:32Speaker 6: What was the play? What was the situation of the play?
- 30:35Speaker 6: It seems weird that they would drop nine in a play.
- 30:37Speaker 6: It was weird, which is why I posted it originally.
- 30:40Speaker 6: And then, of course, it became this whole thing about,
- 30:42Speaker 6: you know, oh, Henderson's open. So when you play the
- 30:45Speaker 6: two high coverage and I can show you a coaching
- 30:47Speaker 6: clinic that's on Twitter, a Bill O'Brien talking about this
- 30:50Speaker 6: because it's his play. When you play the two high coverage,
- 30:53Speaker 6: the read is to the juke route because you're going
- 30:55Speaker 6: to get the inside receiver, the number three receiver on
- 30:59Speaker 6: the Mike linebacker. which is a matchup that the inside
- 31:02Speaker 6: receiver as the quickest guy on your team should win
- 31:04Speaker 6: every single time.
- 31:05Speaker 2: It's easy money. The problem is, is that to their credit,
- 31:08Speaker 2: Jacksonville's Anthony Campanelli dropped both defensive tackles out of the
- 31:13Speaker 2: pass rush underneath the juke route. So like Drake may
- 31:16Speaker 2: is looking in the right place, but you have to
- 31:19Speaker 2: think about it from a zone perspective. They have vision
- 31:21Speaker 2: on the quarterback. So when the zone, when his eyes move,
- 31:24Speaker 2: the zone moves, right? So if he looks at Henderson,
- 31:27Speaker 2: the guy in the slot is just going to.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Fall under Henderson's rug. But he was so far off
- 31:31Speaker 3: of him.
- 31:32Speaker 2: The corner was off of him on the outside. I'm
- 31:35Speaker 2: talking about the inside corner.
- 31:37Speaker 3: I'm talking about the guy who had the flat. He
- 31:39Speaker 3: was way off of Henderson.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Because he's watching Drake May in the pocket.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I know, but all Drake May has to do is
- 31:45Speaker 3: glance over there and throw it. He's wide open. Okay.
- 31:50Speaker 2: I understand... I don't know.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I get what you're saying, that the primary read is Douglas,
- 31:58Speaker 3: but I don't know. It's not like he had pressure
- 32:02Speaker 3: in his face. That's the other thing. They had only
- 32:05Speaker 3: two guys rushing, and both of the guys were double-teamed.
- 32:08Speaker 3: They weren't going to touch Drake Mays.
- 32:09Speaker 2: There's just not in any... He had all the time
- 32:12Speaker 2: in the world. There's just no semblance of that play
- 32:16Speaker 2: that he's going to go juke to hitch. That's just
- 32:19Speaker 2: not going to happen. Like that's just not the read
- 32:21Speaker 2: on the play. So like he's reading the coverage and
- 32:24Speaker 2: all I'm trying to do is explain like how the
- 32:26Speaker 2: quarterback is reading the cover.
- 32:28Speaker 3: I'll give you that.
- 32:29Speaker 2: So like that's all it is. And like to all
- 32:32Speaker 2: the reason why I posted the play was not to
- 32:34Speaker 2: make this about Henderson being open on the play. I
- 32:37Speaker 2: posted it because Jacksonville like got one like that was
- 32:40Speaker 2: a really good wrinkle that they had in there. They
- 32:43Speaker 2: knew the Patriots were going to try to isolate the
- 32:45Speaker 2: Mike linebacker, so they dropped two guys out to help
- 32:47Speaker 2: the Mike linebacker on the juke. And they won the rep.
- 32:51Speaker 2: The defense won the rep. And instead, it turned into
- 32:55Speaker 2: this whole thing about how he missed Henderson. So here
- 32:57Speaker 2: we are.
- 32:58Speaker 6: Those are my favorite all-22s.
- 33:00Speaker 3: But, you know, it wasn't just a picture, Paul. I
- 33:03Speaker 3: did it frame by frame.
- 33:05Speaker 6: I didn't see it, so I'm not telling you. I'm
- 33:07Speaker 6: not picking a side on this.
- 33:08Speaker 3: It was a video.
- 33:09Speaker 2: There is no side.
- 33:10Speaker 6: No, I'm just saying.
- 33:11Speaker 3: I'm not aware of this. I'm the first one to
- 33:15Speaker 3: criticize these all-22 guys when they look at a still
- 33:18Speaker 3: and they say, oh, he's wide open. And, yeah, he
- 33:20Speaker 3: was open for a frame of a picture. But the
- 33:24Speaker 3: quarterback might have been under pressure.
- 33:26Speaker 6: Do you remember the down and distance?
- 33:28Speaker 3: It was no pressure.
- 33:29Speaker 2: It was an early down play with like three minutes
- 33:33Speaker 2: to go in the second quarter. The only time I've
- 33:35Speaker 2: ever seen teams drop like nine guys out in the
- 33:39Speaker 2: coverage like that is like an end-of-half situation.
- 33:42Speaker 6: Yeah, like they did have a first and 30 in
- 33:43Speaker 6: this game. I'll give them that. you know, on first
- 33:47Speaker 6: and 32, but if it was an early down regular,
- 33:49Speaker 6: it was, it was.
- 33:51Speaker 2: A great call. Like it was just a great scheme, uh,
- 33:54Speaker 2: by the Jaguars. And like, that was why I was
- 33:56Speaker 2: highlighting it. But like, I think the biggest thing that
- 33:58Speaker 2: you got to think about when they're playing zone is
- 34:01Speaker 2: that the zone moves with the quarterback's eyes. Everybody's reading
- 34:04Speaker 2: the quarterback's eyes. So like if he drops back and
- 34:07Speaker 2: looks at Henderson, uh, then they're going to move to Henderson.
- 34:11Speaker 3: Yeah. But I'm saying there was enough space where they're
- 34:14Speaker 3: going to move, but he still got the ball to him.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Maybe if he had popped up and thrown it instantly
- 34:18Speaker 2: off his back foot, he could have gotten it to
- 34:19Speaker 2: Henderson right away. But I don't know why his eyes
- 34:22Speaker 2: would have gotten there. I digress.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Because there were two guys on Douglas, and all he
- 34:27Speaker 3: got was a two-yard gain.
- 34:28Speaker 2: I'm saying pre-snap. I don't know why he would have
- 34:30Speaker 2: started on Henderson.
- 34:31Speaker 3: I'm not saying pre-snap he should do it either. I'm
- 34:35Speaker 3: just saying he had time to survey the field.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Or run.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Or run right into the two defensive tackles standing right
- 34:42Speaker 2: in front of him.
- 34:44Speaker 3: I'm not sure they were right in front of him.
- 34:46Speaker 3: They dropped back.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Yeah, they dropped back five yards. They were standing right
- 34:49Speaker 2: in front of him. I mean, like, this is just like.
- 34:52Speaker 3: I read it frame by frame just to make sure
- 34:54Speaker 3: that I wasn't seeing something that wasn't there. You know, like, oh,
- 34:58Speaker 3: maybe there was a guy behind Stevenson that I wasn't seeing.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Or maybe there was pressure. There was neither.
- 35:08Speaker 2: But you have to think about how the quarterback is
- 35:10Speaker 2: reading the coverage.
- 35:11Speaker 3: I get it. Maybe he's not reading it right.
- 35:13Speaker 2: No, he is reading it right. He just....
- 35:18Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 35:18Speaker 2: There's a lot of, there's a lot of things to
- 35:20Speaker 2: blame Drake May for right now. Then we're all doing
- 35:23Speaker 2: it and everybody is doing it. Like that one play.
- 35:26Speaker 2: That was not the purpose of posting that play. And
- 35:29Speaker 2: nor was it like, I tried to explain it multiple times.
- 35:32Speaker 2: I even had Bill O'Brien explain it to like, I
- 35:35Speaker 2: literally posted the clinic of Bill O'Brien talking.
- 35:38Speaker 3: About explanation is, is, You know, for you, very easy
- 35:43Speaker 3: to understand. And it makes sense.
- 35:45Speaker 2: I don't understand. What part of the explanation is not
- 35:48Speaker 2: easy to understand?
- 35:49Speaker 3: I said your explanation is very easy to understand.
- 35:53Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 35:54Speaker 3: What part of what I said is easy?
- 35:56Speaker 6: Well, you said for you it's easy.
- 35:58Speaker 3: Yeah, for you, because usually people don't understand what you're saying.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Well, that's why I'm trying to explain myself better.
- 36:04Speaker 3: And you did a very good job. I complimented you.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Okay.
- 36:07Speaker 3: I complimented you.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 36:08Speaker 1: You guys sound like me and my wife.
- 36:10Speaker 12: Okay.
- 36:12Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 36:13Speaker 2: It's not a Fred thing. It's just like we can't
- 36:16Speaker 2: just watch the all 22 from the bird's eye view
- 36:19Speaker 2: and say this guy is open without thinking about it
- 36:22Speaker 2: from the quarterback's perspective. Like when you play a video
- 36:25Speaker 2: game like Madden, you can hit the B button across
- 36:28Speaker 2: the field and throw the ball from the pocket.
- 36:30Speaker 3: You know, I've never played Madden. in my life.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I'm not saying you. I'm just saying in general, this
- 36:34Speaker 2: happens every week that I, every Monday, I see posts
- 36:39Speaker 2: about this guy was open on this play and that
- 36:41Speaker 2: guy was open on that play.
- 36:42Speaker 4: I know that.
- 36:43Speaker 3: I know it's very tough being Evan. I get it.
- 36:45Speaker 6: It's not about me.
- 36:46Speaker 3: And in this one, I spent a lot of time
- 36:49Speaker 3: making sure.
- 36:49Speaker 2: It's misinformation. It's not about me.
- 36:52Speaker 3: I spent a lot of time on this making sure
- 36:54Speaker 3: that I wasn't one of those people you look down on.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I'm kind of looking down on you right now.
- 36:59Speaker 3: I'm not seeing the whole field in how the play
- 37:03Speaker 3: is developing and just saying, oh, the guy's wide open.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Because nine out of ten times when people say that,
- 37:09Speaker 3: there's circumstances that make them wrong.
- 37:12Speaker 2: But I just explained all those circumstances and you're.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Just not hearing it. The only thing it comes down
- 37:18Speaker 3: to is he wasn't looking that way.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Correct. Right.
- 37:22Speaker 3: But I'm saying in this particular play, he had time
- 37:26Speaker 3: to look. Okay. You could say, well, it was supposed
- 37:30Speaker 3: to go to Douglas. He went to Douglas. But Douglas
- 37:33Speaker 3: was well covered. He had beaten him a little bit,
- 37:36Speaker 3: but I don't know. There was a better option. I
- 37:41Speaker 3: don't know. And I guess maybe they're drilling into him just...
- 37:46Speaker 3: Do the play as it's written up.
- 37:48Speaker 2: I don't know how, as a quarterback, you anticipate them
- 37:51Speaker 2: dropping both defensive tackles out into coverage.
- 37:54Speaker 3: I'm not saying he should have.
- 37:55Speaker 2: So when his eyes go to Douglas because he thinks
- 37:58Speaker 2: he has Douglas isolated on the Mike linebacker, he obviously
- 38:01Speaker 2: thinks he's got the space in the middle of the
- 38:03Speaker 2: field for Douglas to work that route. He's not thinking, oh,
- 38:06Speaker 2: they're going to drop two 320-pound defensive tackles into coverage
- 38:10Speaker 2: on this play, and I'm not going to have them.
- 38:13Speaker 2: you know, like that. So that's like where the, the mindset,
- 38:16Speaker 2: you know, of how to read the structure of the defense.
- 38:18Speaker 3: But once you see what they're doing, I see if
- 38:21Speaker 3: he was under pressure, I'm where I'm with you. Just
- 38:23Speaker 3: get rid of the ball. There was no pressure. Would
- 38:26Speaker 3: you agree on that?
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but I, I just, I'm not agree. I'm not understanding.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Like whatever it doesn't matter.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Here we are talking about one freaking play when the
- 38:36Speaker 3: whole game was a disaster.
- 38:37Speaker 1: That's what happens though. You know, you get locked in
- 38:39Speaker 1: on one thing and you get passionate about it. And, uh, Yeah,
- 38:43Speaker 1: it was rough. I mean, it was all around. You
- 38:45Speaker 1: can get mad at a lot of things in this game,
- 38:46Speaker 1: I feel like.
- 38:47Speaker 6: I mean, it's like, is anybody mad that the other
- 38:51Speaker 6: team ran the ball and seemed like they got, like,
- 38:53Speaker 6: seven yards every time?
- 38:55Speaker 1: Every time.
- 38:56Speaker 2: The nose tackle position's on the list.
- 38:58Speaker 6: I thought one of the major advantages the Patriots were
- 39:02Speaker 6: going to have in this game was Christian Barmore and
- 39:04Speaker 6: Milton Williams against two guys on the inside that have
- 39:07Speaker 6: really struggled. And I didn't see those two guys... dominate
- 39:11Speaker 6: the game. I mean, they might have won more of
- 39:13Speaker 6: their one-on-one matchups than they lost. I'm not saying that
- 39:15Speaker 6: they played poorly, but I didn't see them impact the
- 39:18Speaker 6: game in any discernible way. I thought that was going
- 39:20Speaker 6: to be a major edge.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Yeah, Milton Williams has kind of been a little bit
- 39:23Speaker 3: of a disappointment so far this season.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Yeah, he's getting doubled you know more than anybody else
- 39:28Speaker 2: obviously on the patriot so he's got about a 40
- 39:31Speaker 2: double rate right now which for a player that plays
- 39:33Speaker 2: three technique like he does is is high like when
- 39:36Speaker 2: you get into these double team rates things on next
- 39:38Speaker 2: gen and stuff like that like the nose tackles obviously
- 39:40Speaker 2: get doubled a lot You know, like that's like the
- 39:43Speaker 2: position that they're playing is inherently going to attract double teams. So,
- 39:47Speaker 2: you know, his position typically, you know, that's a little
- 39:50Speaker 2: bit high on the higher side. He got doubled 10 times.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Are they running games? Are they trying to get him,
- 39:55Speaker 3: you know, off of that?
- 39:56Speaker 2: They could probably do more of that. But I think
- 39:58Speaker 2: that there's a lot of confidence that if they double Milton,
- 40:01Speaker 2: that Christian Barmore is going to win the one on one.
- 40:03Speaker 2: And for the first two games, I would say he was.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Yeah, he had a good game last game in particular.
- 40:10Speaker 2: But that's just the yin and the yang of it.
- 40:14Speaker 2: I would say, to me, the biggest problem with the
- 40:16Speaker 2: run defense right now is the nose tackle position. Like,
- 40:18Speaker 2: they are just comboing the nose on these wide zone runs.
- 40:22Speaker 2: They're getting that combination block where the center or the
- 40:24Speaker 2: guard is bumping him onto the center of the guard,
- 40:26Speaker 2: and they're just moving the inside, and the running back's
- 40:28Speaker 2: just riding the cutback lane over and over and over again. Or, like,
- 40:33Speaker 2: Paul is seven, eight yards a pop. Not 50.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Would Craig Woodson have made a difference in this game?
- 40:40Speaker 2: I don't think so. I think, like, to me, like,
- 40:42Speaker 2: this all kind of goes back to, like, the personnel problems.
- 40:45Speaker 2: You know, you could have just paid Tonga. Like you
- 40:49Speaker 2: could have just paid Tonga and you could have just
- 40:51Speaker 2: brought Tonga back. And I really think a lot of
- 40:54Speaker 2: the issues that we're seeing run defense wise, like aren't
- 40:57Speaker 2: going to be like instantaneously fixed, but like they're not
- 41:01Speaker 2: getting any sort of, you know, disruption from the nose tackle.
- 41:05Speaker 2: So he's not eating blocks and he's not penetrating blocks.
- 41:09Speaker 2: So the linebackers are now getting reached by the combination
- 41:12Speaker 2: blocks and it's just causing a whole kind of trickle
- 41:14Speaker 2: down effect. You know, Milton Williams and Barmore to me
- 41:17Speaker 2: are more like penetrators. Like those guys want to get
- 41:20Speaker 2: up the field and make plays and, on the other
- 41:22Speaker 2: line of scrimmage. They need somebody that's holding the middle
- 41:24Speaker 2: of the line, and that's just not happening right now.
- 41:26Speaker 1: They got those two guys, and I feel like those
- 41:28Speaker 1: two guys, as good as they are, they're inconsistent. And
- 41:30Speaker 1: I don't know if that's just a defensive tackle thing
- 41:32Speaker 1: in general where there's big guys and it's hard for
- 41:34Speaker 1: them to get going every single week, but I just
- 41:36Speaker 1: feel like some weeks they're amazing and other weeks they're invisible.
- 41:39Speaker 6: And now they've played a lot of football too now
- 41:41Speaker 6: in the last two years because they're basically every down players.
- 41:44Speaker 6: And to your point, Mike, not every one of those
- 41:47Speaker 6: guys plays every down the way those two do. And
- 41:49Speaker 6: I'm not saying 100% of the snaps when I say
- 41:52Speaker 6: every down, but for the most part, those guys are
- 41:53Speaker 6: three down players. You know, I think the linebackers, you know,
- 41:57Speaker 6: I thought Robert Spillane was really active and played a
- 42:00Speaker 6: really good game against Pittsburgh where he was noticeable all
- 42:03Speaker 6: over the place as a blitzer, dropping into coverage. And,
- 42:07Speaker 6: you know, I thought he did a great job on
- 42:10Speaker 6: Friermuth on a ball 30 yards downfield in the seam.
- 42:13Speaker 6: He's stride for stride with him this game. I saw
- 42:17Speaker 6: him out of position or missing tackles, having opportunities to
- 42:20Speaker 6: make plays consistently and not making them just one game
- 42:23Speaker 6: to the next. Which one is the real one?
- 42:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 6: You know, is it, you know, were they looking better
- 42:29Speaker 6: than they were because of the opponent as Mike Grable indicated?
- 42:33Speaker 6: And then all of a sudden, again, I made a
- 42:35Speaker 6: lot of this in the pregame show when we talked
- 42:37Speaker 6: about it, Zach core is pretty aggressive. And I think
- 42:40Speaker 6: he's going to stay aggressive because I think that's his
- 42:42Speaker 6: mindset and they're going to blitz. And, I thought when
- 42:46Speaker 6: they blitzed Trevor Lawrence, they were around him. Didn't matter.
- 42:50Speaker 6: He stood in, made throws, made plays. Because sometimes the
- 42:53Speaker 6: other team's good and can make plays. And that, to me,
- 42:57Speaker 6: was the difference between this week and Pittsburgh. Aaron Rodgers
- 43:00Speaker 6: is incapable of making those throws on any kind of
- 43:03Speaker 6: a consistent basis anymore. Now, I watched a lot of
- 43:05Speaker 6: the Pittsburgh game against Cincinnati, and he had three touchdown
- 43:10Speaker 6: passes to guys that could not have been any.
- 43:12Speaker 3: More wide open.
- 43:13Speaker 6: They were all three coverage busts by the Bengals. You
- 43:17Speaker 6: do that, and you can give up 30 to anybody.
- 43:19Speaker 6: Patriots don't bust coverage like that, and Aaron Rodgers couldn't
- 43:22Speaker 6: make those plays. I didn't think the coverage was terrible
- 43:24Speaker 6: in this game. But I thought Trevor Lawrence at some
- 43:28Speaker 6: points of the game kind of picked him apart.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Especially in their zone coverage.
- 43:31Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:32Speaker 1: I mean, the statistics for the defense are just so
- 43:34Speaker 1: damning right now because it's your blitzing 50% of the
- 43:37Speaker 1: time to get below average pressure. Your four-man pressure does
- 43:40Speaker 1: not exist.
- 43:42Speaker 7: You know, so.
- 43:43Speaker 2: That that's exactly what we were worried about with the defense.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Like when they play blitz man, they're really, really good.
- 43:50Speaker 2: When they play zone with the four man rush, they
- 43:53Speaker 2: can't get pressure. And any quarterback at this level, if
- 43:56Speaker 2: you don't get pressure against zone coverage is going to
- 43:58Speaker 2: pick it apart. So like, that's exactly what happened on Sunday. They,
- 44:01Speaker 2: they had 12, four man rushes. They had one pressure.
- 44:05Speaker 2: One for 12. They got pressure.
- 44:07Speaker 1: 7%, something like that.
- 44:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he's having a picnic back there.
- 44:10Speaker 1: That was a question I came up with, Evan. I
- 44:11Speaker 1: kind of thought about it. I read your thing before
- 44:13Speaker 1: I watched mine, but that came out was like, is
- 44:15Speaker 1: there more pressure on the defense to get pressure when
- 44:18Speaker 1: you have a zone call on? You know what I mean?
- 44:21Speaker 1: Is there more of an urgency to disrupt because you know,
- 44:24Speaker 1: at least with man, you don't know exactly how it's
- 44:27Speaker 1: going to go. A guy might break up your timing
- 44:29Speaker 1: a little bit, and I know that's what the defense
- 44:31Speaker 1: is trying to do.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Well, listen, I think in the NFL, if you don't
- 44:33Speaker 3: get pressure... Quarterbacks are going to carve you up. I
- 44:36Speaker 3: don't care if you're in man's zone. If you give
- 44:38Speaker 3: any quarterback in this league time, they're going to find somebody.
- 44:41Speaker 6: And that's why I agree with Zach Kor. I think
- 44:45Speaker 6: he's aggressive, but I like his mindset, and I think
- 44:47Speaker 6: I would continue. It's the best thing the team's got
- 44:51Speaker 6: going right now.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 44:51Speaker 6: I would rather have Trevor Lawrence make the play that
- 44:53Speaker 6: he did, I want to say early in the second half,
- 44:56Speaker 6: where it looked like they had him. And he somehow
- 45:00Speaker 6: stays up long enough. He just dumps one out to
- 45:02Speaker 6: Tootin in the flat. and it ends up being a
- 45:05Speaker 6: big play for them. It gives them a first down
- 45:07Speaker 6: and kind of kick-started that drive. There's a degree of
- 45:11Speaker 6: difficulty on that play. I don't think every quarterback is
- 45:14Speaker 6: going to make that play. He's a big, strong guy
- 45:17Speaker 6: who's not afraid to stand in the pocket and absorb
- 45:19Speaker 6: some contact to make a play. Aaron Rodgers wouldn't have
- 45:22Speaker 6: made that play. He would have made it 10 years ago,
- 45:24Speaker 6: but he wouldn't have made it two weeks ago against
- 45:27Speaker 6: the Patriots. I'm not faulting the scheme. Sometimes the other
- 45:31Speaker 6: team is good. I think Jacksonville was pretty good on
- 45:35Speaker 6: Sunday offensively.
- 45:36Speaker 3: Listen, I don't want to let the defense off the hook.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Certainly they were culpable in this game. But I have
- 45:42Speaker 3: to believe if the Patriots had any semblance of offense...
- 45:45Speaker 3: It would have changed the way things have gone for
- 45:48Speaker 3: the defense. Right now, I'm afraid to say, our offense
- 45:52Speaker 3: is back to being easy to defend.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Your defense gave you hope once with the Marcus Jones.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Those are the kind of plays that you need, but
- 46:02Speaker 1: there wasn't enough of that. There was a point in
- 46:04Speaker 1: the third quarter where it felt like every play they
- 46:06Speaker 1: had was just Six yards. Six yards.
- 46:09Speaker 6: The last three quarters of the game were not competitive.
- 46:12Speaker 6: I mean, defensively, I couldn't stop them.
- 46:14Speaker 1: But you know, Paul, the point I was going to
- 46:15Speaker 1: make was I was watching it. And, you know, in next-gen,
- 46:18Speaker 1: they tell you, like, which plays are the pressure plays.
- 46:20Speaker 1: So you can just pull up the pressure plays. And
- 46:22Speaker 1: I pulled up some of the Patriots' pressure plays. Some
- 46:24Speaker 1: of the Patriots' pressure plays. It can qualify as a pressure,
- 46:27Speaker 1: but Trevor Lawrence wasn't feeling that pressure. He stood right
- 46:30Speaker 1: in there. And, yeah, the guy was close to him.
- 46:32Speaker 1: But you look at Trevor Lawrence, and he's not blinking
- 46:33Speaker 1: for a second.
- 46:34Speaker 6: The touchdown drive that made it, I think, 21-3. I
- 46:37Speaker 6: thought that they got around him, affected him a little bit,
- 46:40Speaker 6: and he just stood in there. I think he had
- 46:43Speaker 6: three third and longs that he completed on that drive.
- 46:45Speaker 6: One of them, he has a guy right in his
- 46:48Speaker 6: face as he hits Jacoby Myers over the middle.
- 46:51Speaker 2: That one was Ellis, and then Kevin Byard got in
- 46:55Speaker 2: there on the one that Carlton Davis allowed. That also
- 46:58Speaker 2: was like.
- 47:00Speaker 6: But here's the thing.
- 47:01Speaker 2: He was within a millisecond of.
- 47:04Speaker 6: It's not Aaron Rodgers. It's not a backup in Drew Locke.
- 47:08Speaker 6: So now it's Trevor Lawrence. Who's good? He's not great.
- 47:11Speaker 6: Now you're going to get Josh Allen. You know, you
- 47:14Speaker 6: might get more of these throws made on you. And
- 47:18Speaker 6: if that's the only way you can affect the quarterback,
- 47:21Speaker 6: you're in trouble.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Well, especially like, you know, you mentioned the one to
- 47:24Speaker 2: check down to two and they play a five man
- 47:26Speaker 2: zone behind a pressure on that play. And if you
- 47:31Speaker 2: play a five-man coverage and man coverage, well, then somebody
- 47:33Speaker 2: would have had the back. Now, does he make the
- 47:35Speaker 2: tackler not, you know, in space fair? But there was
- 47:39Speaker 2: nobody underneath over there because they only had five guys
- 47:42Speaker 2: dropping into coverage in the zone, and there was no flat. So, like,
- 47:45Speaker 2: there was just... They were hoping to get home with
- 47:48Speaker 2: the pressure, but that's the issue with blitzing when you
- 47:51Speaker 2: play zone, is that you don't drop as many guys
- 47:54Speaker 2: in coverage. And so most zone teams, maybe they get
- 47:58Speaker 2: to it creatively, but they only really rush four guys consistently.
- 48:02Speaker 2: And that's because... You've got to cover all the areas
- 48:05Speaker 2: of the field, so you want to drop seven guys
- 48:07Speaker 2: into coverage and find ways to do that. When you
- 48:11Speaker 2: only drop five in zone, well, now Tootin is wide
- 48:14Speaker 2: open underneath the zone for a 15-yard gain. Their man
- 48:18Speaker 2: coverage stats are all terrific. Their pressure rate, their efficiency,
- 48:24Speaker 2: all of it. Their zone coverage rate is all bottom
- 48:26Speaker 2: five in the league. So it's like they are good
- 48:30Speaker 2: at playing man blitz.
- 48:31Speaker 3: I'm curious.
- 48:32Speaker 2: That's it.
- 48:32Speaker 6: Something that Fred asked you a little while ago about Woodson.
- 48:37Speaker 6: I think there were a handful of, I think all
- 48:40Speaker 6: the touchdowns really were in the middle of the field.
- 48:42Speaker 6: You don't really feel like It was like, you.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Know, I mean, like maybe maybe like the Jacoby Myers touchdown.
- 48:48Speaker 2: He ran a post on Jalen Reed like this. Woodson
- 48:51Speaker 2: played a little bit better and maybe like, you know,
- 48:53Speaker 2: get into that passing lane. I guess you could give
- 48:55Speaker 2: him that.
- 48:57Speaker 3: But I thought we said before the game that he
- 48:59Speaker 3: could be one of the keys to success.
- 49:01Speaker 13: Who?
- 49:02Speaker 4: Woodson.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a great player. I just think that in
- 49:06Speaker 2: this game, they played more pure base defense to match that.
- 49:10Speaker 2: The issue that what I was worried about with Woodson
- 49:12Speaker 2: was that they weren't going to be able to play
- 49:14Speaker 2: three safety nickel. So, like, how are they going to
- 49:15Speaker 2: match Jacksonville in two tight end? They played a 27 snap.
- 49:20Speaker 2: in base defense. They only give up three and a
- 49:21Speaker 2: half yards of play. So like that actually like them
- 49:25Speaker 2: having to play base with three linebackers instead of three
- 49:28Speaker 2: safety nickel wasn't the issue. The issue was them playing
- 49:31Speaker 2: zone at a nickel like that. That's really what kind
- 49:34Speaker 2: of shredded them in this game. I guess like, That
- 49:36Speaker 2: one touchdown, if I had to think about it, you know,
- 49:38Speaker 2: that would be maybe one play. But I thought that
- 49:41Speaker 2: that was, other than that, like, I don't think Reed was,
- 49:44Speaker 2: you know, really the issue.
- 49:46Speaker 3: No, I wouldn't.
- 49:48Speaker 6: I'm just talking about the coverages and maybe some of
- 49:50Speaker 6: the things that you... maybe didn't feel as comfortable doing
- 49:53Speaker 6: because he's out and you have a guy who's only
- 49:55Speaker 6: been here three or four weeks. So I'd say that,
- 49:57Speaker 6: you know, maybe the abstract is more of what I'm thinking.
- 49:59Speaker 2: They played more zone in this game, especially in the
- 50:01Speaker 2: first half. And you do wonder if you had Woodson,
- 50:04Speaker 2: like it's not just the three corners and the three receivers.
- 50:07Speaker 2: You also have to cover the back and the tight
- 50:09Speaker 2: end if you're going to play man. So do they
- 50:10Speaker 2: trust Woodson more on a tight end than Jalen Reed
- 50:13Speaker 2: at this point?
- 50:13Speaker 7: Maybe.

- 53:22Speaker 13: Mass General Brigham. I'm wondering, are you aware of any
- 53:29Speaker 13: lingering shoulder problem with Drake dating back to the Denver game?
- 53:34Speaker 4: No. No, I'm not. I don't think, you know, I
- 53:36Speaker 4: think the....
- 53:38Speaker 17: You know, when you go through an NFL game like that,
- 53:40Speaker 17: especially as a quarterback and you get hit, and again,
- 53:44Speaker 17: there was not, to my knowledge, anything that would have
- 53:48Speaker 17: put him on the injury report or any sort of treatment.
- 53:51Speaker 17: I think every player has normal maintenance and prehab that
- 53:55Speaker 17: they go through as a warm-up routine. So that's not
- 54:00Speaker 17: anything that really I would even consider. But, you know,
- 54:06Speaker 17: as you go through a game, I'm sure you get hit.
- 54:09Speaker 17: I'm sure things happen. But I don't anticipate that being
- 54:14Speaker 17: any issue going forward.
- 54:15Speaker 6: These next few days with Drake before Wednesday's practice, do
- 54:18Speaker 6: you want to see him, like, grind away?
- 54:20Speaker 2: Do you want to see him clear his head?
- 54:21Speaker 4: How would you want to see him? Well, I mean,
- 54:22Speaker 4: I think that there's– I think that's for everybody. Not
- 54:25Speaker 4: just Drake. I think that starts with me.
- 54:27Speaker 17: I think you have to be able to say, you know,
- 54:29Speaker 17: where did things go wrong?
- 54:32Speaker 4: You know, look at what we did.
- 54:34Speaker 17: Ultimately, our performance– What we did out there on Sunday,
- 54:38Speaker 17: correct it, look at the positives. They're always going to be,
- 54:42Speaker 17: even in that game. But I think at some point
- 54:46Speaker 17: in time, we're going to have to move on, and
- 54:48Speaker 17: we're going to have to.
- 54:49Speaker 4: Be able to recognize.
- 54:53Speaker 17: What's in front of us, the challenge that's ahead, but
- 54:56Speaker 17: not dismiss any of the actions that happened yesterday.
- 55:00Speaker 4: What were some of those positives that you took away
- 55:01Speaker 4: from yesterday? Well, I mean, again, we hit some plays.
- 55:04Speaker 4: We took advantage of some things. offensively.
- 55:07Speaker 17: We hit an X play down there on the sidelines
- 55:10Speaker 17: to pop. I thought that the protection continued to improve.
- 55:15Speaker 17: It wasn't perfect, but I think we had some good efforts.
- 55:19Speaker 17: I saw some guys cleaning the pocket out. Defensively, we
- 55:25Speaker 17: tried to affect the quarterback. We just dropped him. Those
- 55:29Speaker 17: MOBPs are close. We got an interception on a on
- 55:34Speaker 17: a pressure, we tip to pass, we talk about tipping passes.
- 55:37Speaker 17: Special teams, we created a penalty, we had a return
- 55:40Speaker 17: out to the 40. But then again, there's the same
- 55:44Speaker 17: things that we took advantage of. We blocked a guy
- 55:47Speaker 17: in the back to start to drive backed up. We
- 55:51Speaker 17: don't use the rules to our advantage on the sideline
- 55:53Speaker 17: with the kick.
- 55:55Speaker 4: We turn the ball over and then we.
- 55:57Speaker 17: Don't take the chances on defense to when we have
- 56:00Speaker 17: chances to turn the ball over, turn it over. They
- 56:03Speaker 17: executed in the red zone. We clearly didn't. We missed
- 56:07Speaker 17: field goal. So, again, just the game got away from
- 56:11Speaker 17: us after that. But it could have been a lot
- 56:16Speaker 17: of what-ifs. It could have been 14-9.
- 56:20Speaker 4: Easily.
- 56:21Speaker 17: To where you're in a competitive football game, you can
- 56:22Speaker 17: get a turnover.
- 56:24Speaker 4: But instead of that, it's 21-3.
- 56:25Speaker 15: On the radio this morning, you made a comment about
- 56:28Speaker 15: not trying to choke the life out of every play.
- 56:31Speaker 2: With Drake, how do you go about addressing that and
- 56:34Speaker 2: fixing that while also ensuring that he sells the confidence?
- 56:39Speaker 17: Confidence comes from your preparation and it comes from going
- 56:43Speaker 17: out there.
- 56:44Speaker 4: I can't manufacture confidence. I can't just say, hey, be confident.
- 56:48Speaker 4: You have to practice.
- 56:49Speaker 17: You have to hit those plays in practice and you
- 56:52Speaker 17: have to feel good about it. Taking the meeting to
- 56:55Speaker 17: practice and being able to hit those things and or
- 56:58Speaker 17: a pass rush move or a game or a route,
- 57:01Speaker 17: any protection, anything.
- 57:03Speaker 4: That you would need in the football game.
- 57:04Speaker 17: So, you know, I just, you know, sometimes you want
- 57:09Speaker 17: to do something so badly that, you know, I mean,
- 57:11Speaker 17: it's like the tighter you hold the.
- 57:12Speaker 4: Golf club, the more crooked it goes when you hit it.
- 57:17Speaker 17: So, you know, we just have to be able to
- 57:19Speaker 17: make sure that we're on the same page, that everybody
- 57:22Speaker 17: knows what's expected of them, have a few details, and
- 57:25Speaker 17: then go play football.
- 57:26Speaker 18: Mike, at the end of the first half, you guys
- 57:28Speaker 18: had first and goal at the five Jacksonville and two
- 57:31Speaker 18: timeouts left. What's the conversation like between you, Josh and
- 57:35Speaker 18: stretch about like, was there an edict to run on
- 57:38Speaker 18: the first two downs and get, get them to use
- 57:41Speaker 18: their timeouts? Like, how does that go?
- 57:42Speaker 17: No, I mean, again, we're just trying to have a
- 57:45Speaker 17: good plan for, for plays inside the five yard line. Um,
- 57:49Speaker 17: you know, we weren't trying to get cute and we
- 57:51Speaker 17: would have been happy if we scored a touchdown on
- 57:53Speaker 17: the first play. Um, Would have been happy if we
- 57:57Speaker 17: scored it on the second play. We weren't trying to
- 57:59Speaker 17: get cute and eat up time. Those were plays that
- 58:02Speaker 17: we thought we liked there down in the red zone.
- 58:07Speaker 18: You were satisfied.
- 58:11Speaker 17: With those plays? Yeah, again, we've always been through this.
- 58:16Speaker 17: There's no perfect call. The best ones are the ones
- 58:18Speaker 17: that players have confidence in.
- 58:20Speaker 4: They're decisive. And then we have to be able to...
- 58:26Speaker 4: block them, make a good read.
- 58:27Speaker 17: And then if they play the last play and they
- 58:34Speaker 17: pass it off and it's not there, then.
- 58:38Speaker 4: We've got to throw it away.
- 58:39Speaker 2: We saw a few occasions where you were talking to
- 58:42Speaker 2: Drake on the sideline one-on-one. Why was it important for
- 58:45Speaker 2: you to have those conversations with him one-on-one in-game on
- 58:49Speaker 2: the sideline, and how much of that was about trying
- 58:51Speaker 2: to settle him, ground him in the moment?
- 58:53Speaker 17: Well, I mean, again, I think I have to figure
- 58:55Speaker 17: out what to try to, my conversations with each person
- 59:00Speaker 17: on that sidelines, I have to try to do my best,
- 59:03Speaker 17: each and every play, whoever I'm communicating with, to try
- 59:06Speaker 17: to get the best out of them. Um, you know,
- 59:09Speaker 17: so I'll have conversations with a lot of people. And again, um,
- 59:13Speaker 17: you know, a lot of, a lot of faith and
- 59:15Speaker 17: confidence in everybody that's here.
- 59:16Speaker 4: That's why they're here.
- 59:18Speaker 17: Uh, we, we have to continue to prepare and work
- 59:22Speaker 17: with each other.
- 59:23Speaker 4: The, the answers are here. You know, the answers are
- 59:26Speaker 4: in this building.
- 59:27Speaker 17: Um, We just have to do it much more consistently
- 59:31Speaker 17: and continue to find ways to do it together.
- 59:33Speaker 18: Mike, do you feel like you have to simplify things
- 59:36Speaker 18: at all just to help Drake get settled?
- 59:38Speaker 17: When you have games like that throughout the entire team,
- 59:43Speaker 17: how do you fix some things?
- 59:44Speaker 4: You get back to the basics.
- 59:45Speaker 17: Again, we want to continue to impress upon the importance
- 59:49Speaker 17: of what our identity is and making sure that we
- 59:52Speaker 17: still have to build it. You have to put it
- 59:54Speaker 17: out there. Before you can protect something, you have to
- 59:57Speaker 17: build it. And, you know, we have to get back
- 1:00:00Speaker 17: to the basics. So some of that is, you know,
- 1:00:04Speaker 17: it's always, you know, do you do less and try
- 1:00:06Speaker 17: to do it better?
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: Or do you go.
- 1:00:10Speaker 17: And you try to scheme up a bunch of stuff
- 1:00:12Speaker 17: and hope you hit it? I think at the end
- 1:00:14Speaker 17: of the day there's a great balance between, you know,
- 1:00:18Speaker 17: we had a couple good scheme plays. They didn't hit them.
- 1:00:22Speaker 17: You know, we didn't– they made it and we didn't.
- 1:00:26Speaker 17: Same thing defensively. It's how much you do. Special teams,
- 1:00:30Speaker 17: you know, making sure that every guy knows what their
- 1:00:33Speaker 17: job is on kickoff return or whatever it is. So
- 1:00:37Speaker 17: I think to your question, we will try to– you
- 1:00:42Speaker 17: never want to go into a game when a guy
- 1:00:43Speaker 17: is unsure, right? But how much we do, we'll look
- 1:00:46Speaker 17: at that and we'll look at everything that we can
- 1:00:48Speaker 17: do to help us win here on the road.
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: Jack Ward's offense went five for five in the red zone. Yep.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: When it comes to the passing touchdowns, how much of
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: that was just great execution from Trevor Lawrence?
- 1:00:57Speaker 17: I think it's both. We didn't play very good red
- 1:00:59Speaker 17: zone defense. We got them in some longer yardage situations.
- 1:01:05Speaker 17: They made a play a couple times.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: We didn't.
- 1:01:08Speaker 17: Also, I think we have to be much better down there.
- 1:01:13Speaker 17: That's what cost us last year. I think you saw
- 1:01:15Speaker 17: that repeatedly last year when we played good defense and
- 1:01:19Speaker 17: then didn't play very well in the red zone. Again,
- 1:01:22Speaker 17: we'll have to Make sure that we're emphasizing that and
- 1:01:27Speaker 17: forcing them to kick field.
- 1:01:29Speaker 6: And now, great moments in history.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Jeez, my lines are way off this week.
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I just don't believe in Kirk Cousins.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: Where do you get your lines from? Jimmy the Barber?
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: It's weak to the spread. I just go to DraftKings.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: ESPN's had the same lines as Paul.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: We go to DraftKings.
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: No, this one's making more sense than the one. Wiz Kanifa,
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: you listening?
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: DraftKings.
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: I mean, they are our presenting sponsor for the post-game show,
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: so I think that we should just go by DraftKings. Yeah,
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: I mean, show a little. So instead of every week
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: you mocking my spread, it's as if I'm making them up.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: So you go to DraftKings?
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Why don't you go to DraftKings?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I'm not allowed to, Fred. I signed a contract here.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: You're not allowed.
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: To use it.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: You can't even look at it, Paul.
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: You can't even look at it every week. Every Thursday
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: morning I come here.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: Paul's grandfathered into game over.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: I was going to say, Paul just has different rules.
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: Like, this is not serious, right? That's another great moment from.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: All right, back here on Patriots Unfiltered, 855-PASS-500 is the hotline.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address. We got a
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: lot of both emails and calls coming in. The Comrex,
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: that's the machine that the calls come in on. It
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: is stacked up. No, it is stacked up.
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: Oh, a sponsor for something?
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: What's that?
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: I went over 300,000, by the way, speaking of sponsors
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: and looking for stuff.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Did it spew out some smoke right at the backfire?
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: It's just a sad ride home after the Jacksonville game
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: the other night.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: When it happened, did you pull over and kind of
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: take a deep breath?
- 1:03:06Speaker 7: No.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: Think about the 300,000 miles that you've driven. We did it, boy.
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: We did it. But I did make it a point
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: to specifically be watching when it turned.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Do you have to Flintstone it every once in a while?
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: A little bit. Maybe give it a push.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Hopefully the bottom rusted out so he can get his
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: feet down to the ground.
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: That's coming.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: Do you hear Scrap?
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Scrap came in. He's got the biggest box ever. Paul,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: your car's coming in rust out there.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: I saw your car. It's all rusty. We've been trying, Scrap,
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: since I met him.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: All right, 855 past 500. Let's get to some of
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: these callers. Try to be, you know, polite. Not to
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: be polite, but be succinct. Yeah, succinct too. Herm's in D.C.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: What's up, Herm?
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: It's just a game.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Herm, that is succinct. I will thank you for that.
- 1:03:56Speaker 6: Good call.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Anthony's in Seattle. What's up, Anthony?
- 1:03:59Speaker 10: Hey, Fred, Paul, Deuce, Evan. How's everybody doing?
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: Hi. Good.
- 1:04:05Speaker 10: Hey, I listened to the post-game show yesterday, and so
- 1:04:08Speaker 10: I decided to take a page out of Duke's and
- 1:04:11Speaker 10: Troy's book. So excuse my strong language, but you've got
- 1:04:15Speaker 10: a gosh darn do better, Dagnabbit, or you're darn tootin'.
- 1:04:18Speaker 10: We're going to keep losing.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: Sorry, guys.
- 1:04:20Speaker 10: Sorry for any kids listening to the show and for
- 1:04:23Speaker 10: my strong language, but it had to be said. Hey, listen,
- 1:04:27Speaker 10: my thoughts are a little jumbled right now. I was
- 1:04:29Speaker 10: on hold for a while, but I'll try to make
- 1:04:31Speaker 10: it short and sweet.
- 1:04:32Speaker 13: Listen.
- 1:04:33Speaker 10: We're in a tough stretch right now, and the quarterback's
- 1:04:36Speaker 10: in a tough stretch. And, you know, I'm not going
- 1:04:39Speaker 10: to just whistle past the graveyard and say it's going
- 1:04:42Speaker 10: to get all better, but it might. And I'm also
- 1:04:44Speaker 10: not going to go off the deep end and say
- 1:04:46Speaker 10: this is going to be a disastrous season, but it might.
- 1:04:48Speaker 10: But what I will say is Deuce actually has a
- 1:04:51Speaker 10: really good feel for this type of stuff, too.
- 1:04:53Speaker 16: You just don't know.
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: It's early in the season. You know, things aren't linear.
- 1:04:58Speaker 10: And the journey, you know, every season is.
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: Its own thing.
- 1:05:01Speaker 10: And Deuce talks about this a lot, and I'm on
- 1:05:03Speaker 10: the same page. I'm here for the journey. So, you know,
- 1:05:06Speaker 10: we'll see what happens. But I will say, and I'll
- 1:05:09Speaker 10: get off the line, what I will say is right.
- 1:05:10Speaker 20: Now we're in it.
- 1:05:11Speaker 10: And when you're in it, it's tough to look ahead
- 1:05:14Speaker 10: and say, oh, this is just going to be a
- 1:05:16Speaker 10: memory that we– but, like, we talk about the Monday
- 1:05:19Speaker 10: night game against Kansas City or, like, that Justin Fields
- 1:05:23Speaker 10: Monday night game where we hit rock bottom a few
- 1:05:25Speaker 10: years ago. We talk about that stuff just kind of
- 1:05:27Speaker 10: in passing because they're just memories of tough times. And
- 1:05:30Speaker 10: we don't feel the full weight and the gloom and
- 1:05:32Speaker 10: doom of those moments anymore. So one day we'll talk
- 1:05:36Speaker 10: about this. Hey, you remember when Drake, early in his career,
- 1:05:38Speaker 10: he had that stretch? And hopefully we'll be talking about
- 1:05:41Speaker 10: him as a guy who's a franchise, you know, or
- 1:05:44Speaker 10: excuse me, you know what I mean, MVP caliber year in,
- 1:05:46Speaker 10: year out. But right now we're in it, but it's
- 1:05:48Speaker 10: not the end of the world. So hang in there,
- 1:05:50Speaker 10: Pats Nation. I love me some Drake May, so I
- 1:05:52Speaker 10: ain't going anywhere.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: All right. Thanks, Anthony. I like that.
- 1:05:55Speaker 6: So which one of those two things is going to happen?
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: He doesn't know.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: We don't know.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: Neither do we. Stay tuned. We don't know.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: We're just here for the ride, Paul.
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: No. He mentioned things as like specific games that we
- 1:06:07Speaker 6: thought it was the end of the world. And one
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: of them wasn't. The Kansas City game on the Monday
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: night turned out to be a turning point. We were
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: on to Cincinnati, and we went on to win the
- 1:06:14Speaker 6: Super Bowl. The Justin Fields Monday night game was not
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: rock bottom, my friends. It got way worse after that
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: for two years. They had back-to-back 4-13 seasons. Yep. So
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: which one are you going to get? He mentions that
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: game as like, well, we thought it was bad. Yeah,
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: it got way worse. It was bad then, and it
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: got worse.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: I think his point was, you thought it was, and
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: it was. And then another one, you thought it was,
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: and it wasn't.
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: I think his point was, and we remember that as
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: a blip on the radar, I think was his point.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: Oh, now we do. I don't. At the time, we
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: were like, oh, my God, what's going on?
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: I feel like we're right back.
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: It was like two coaches went since then. Belichick was
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: out after the year, and Mayo came in, and he
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: was out after the next year. You want to do that?
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: I do agree with this bigger point, though, that, you know,
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: sometimes you have to take a step back and take
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: a deep breath and relax a little bit about it.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: But I think all of the things we're saying are
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: pretty fair criticisms of what's going on.
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: I don't think we're being unfair at all. But, you know,
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: I'm not here. I'm also not saying the season's over.
- 1:07:17Speaker 6: That's too early for that.
- 1:07:18Speaker 13: No.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: No, I mean, I get what he's saying about Drake,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: and I have a level of patience right now with
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Drake of wanting to enjoy that journey. I think to
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: me right now my bigger concern is that their old
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: guys are aging up really fast, and some of these
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: free agents that they put in, and that you are
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: going to acquire even more holes than you kind of
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: thought that you had. I'm concerned about Morgan Moses. I
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: don't know if he's healthy. I don't think the right
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: side of the line played great. The backup right guard
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: is a major issue. But I wonder about Bayard and
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Hunter Henry. And, you know, I mentioned Moses already, but,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: you know, it's just there's these guys.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: It happens.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: We talk about it all the time. Carlton Davis, how
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: many of the guys on this roster do you feel
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: like are still ascending? We haven't seen their best football yet.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: And how many do you feel like you're kind of
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: hanging on and hoping that you can get another year
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: or two out of them? I think that that number
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: to me.
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: Is like when you're here, I'm not even thinking about it.
- 1:08:09Speaker 6: But early in the show, Fred, you mentioned like the
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: Red Sox analogy. And I'd feel a lot better about
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: the Patriots chances if they were playing in the American League. Like,
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: this is not going to get that much easier. The
- 1:08:24Speaker 6: schedule is not going to, I mean.
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: Well, you can say that, but to defend the Red Sox,
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: when they went on their run, they were beating good teams.
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: But there are no good teams in the American League.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: There's, like, two, three.
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: And I think the Red Sox might be one of them. Like,
- 1:08:36Speaker 6: did 12 games over 500, they finished. I mean, it
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: was all in that one 40-game stretch. They went 32-5
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: the rest of the season. They were well under 500. But.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: They do have a little bit of.
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: One great stretch.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: That's not like. You know, Raiders, I know, are 3-0, but.
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: No, the Raiders are a game that they should win.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: You know, Dolphins, Jets.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: Well, see.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: no games they should win.
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: The Raiders and the Dolphins are games they should not.
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: Lose to the Dolphins. Every team that's played the Raiders
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: so far said we should win this game, and they didn't.
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: No, sir.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: Now, the Bears last night looked ridiculous with Case Keenum.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: I don't know if Caleb Williams is going to be
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: back for that game yet in, what, late October, right?
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: But I think Chicago's good. I think Minnesota's good. Now,
- 1:09:25Speaker 6: Green Bay might look a little easier than it did
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: on paper. The Chargers are a game that looks like
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: it's going to be a little easier. But I don't
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: put those Jets games in the win column.
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: No.
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: Miami?
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: If they can't beat the Jets, then we're in trouble.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: We are in big trouble if they can't beat that team.
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: I guess my larger point is not about what the
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: other teams are. It's Fred saying, I knew the Red
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: Sox weren't this bad. I know the Patriots aren't this bad.
- 1:09:54Speaker 6: I don't know that.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: I don't.
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: Because of, I think, some points that Mike illustrated. Mike
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: and I talked about the personnel as we were walking
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: out the other night. And I think they made some
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: changes in personnel that we all kind of thought were
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: upgrades and So far, it hasn't really looked that way.
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: And on top of it, I think Mike just made
- 1:10:13Speaker 6: a really good point about some of the guys that
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: you were relying on that have been good players for
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: you may not be quite at that level anymore. Morgan Moses,
- 1:10:22Speaker 6: Hunter Henry. Henry's been really quiet. You hear anybody talking
- 1:10:25Speaker 6: about Hunter Henry at all, other than missing blocks?
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I don't know what's going on.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: The offense is such an enigma right now because the
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: quarterback's playing so poorly that it's hard to judge everybody else.
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: The quarterback could rise all ships. If the quarterback was
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: playing at the level he played at last year, he
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: might be making this look better.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: Because everybody's talking about how these guys don't get open.
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: They didn't get open last year either, but he just
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: hit them.
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: He had an unbelievable tight window throw percentage, and he
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: was making plays all over the place. They ain't making
- 1:10:57Speaker 6: those plays now. Matt Collins isn't coming down with that
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: throw in the end zone.
- 1:11:01Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: You know, on the sideline. Last year he did.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: All right uh.
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: jordan's in tampa what's up jordan.
- 1:11:11Speaker 19: Jordan guys i think you're taking my call i appreciate
- 1:11:14Speaker 19: it yeah i'm coming couple things that i wanted to
- 1:11:16Speaker 19: talk about first of all thinking about it it's so
- 1:11:19Speaker 19: easy to make drake made the the scapegoat for everything
- 1:11:23Speaker 19: and you know he is obviously we're watching the games
- 1:11:26Speaker 19: he's making big mistakes but i haven't really heard a
- 1:11:29Speaker 19: dialogue on is josh mcdaniels uh... I hear Evan talk
- 1:11:34Speaker 19: about his guys, Ben Johnson, Kyle Shanahan. I like Kevin O'Connell,
- 1:11:40Speaker 19: these offensive minds. But I used to put Josh in
- 1:11:43Speaker 19: that conversation, and he's not maximizing this offense like I
- 1:11:49Speaker 19: see these other guys doing. He's not evolving with the offense.
- 1:11:53Speaker 19: It seems stagnant. It seems week after week the same
- 1:11:56Speaker 19: thing is happening, and he's not evolving. He's not upgrading
- 1:11:59Speaker 19: this team. That was the first thing. And then the
- 1:12:02Speaker 19: second thing is we just had a conversation on the schedule.
- 1:12:06Speaker 19: I guess if we're looking glass half full for the schedule,
- 1:12:09Speaker 19: if you would have told me at the beginning of
- 1:12:11Speaker 19: the year we would go one and three in the
- 1:12:14Speaker 19: first four weeks, I could have bought that. You know,
- 1:12:16Speaker 19: I could have seen that happening. Obviously, how it happened,
- 1:12:20Speaker 19: I don't like how it happened.
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: It looks bad, but.
- 1:12:23Speaker 19: One in three was believable for me for our schedule
- 1:12:27Speaker 19: the first four weeks. Now is when we have to
- 1:12:29Speaker 19: start winning these winnable games. I mean, the Raiders, Jets,
- 1:12:33Speaker 19: even Bears, all these games are there to be won,
- 1:12:38Speaker 19: and we have to start stacking wins. I know it
- 1:12:40Speaker 19: looks bleak, but I see a turnaround based on how
- 1:12:43Speaker 19: our schedule eases up.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Thank you. Not if they play that good playing.
- 1:12:46Speaker 6: I don't think the schedule eases up.
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: That's where I would push that. Listen, I agree with him.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: I hear what he's saying about if you told me 1-3.
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: I could see that with the schedule that we had. However,
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: it's how it looks. He said that. If they go
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: into Buffalo and it's a tight game and they lose,
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: I'll feel a hell of a lot better.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: I would agree.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: Even though you're 1-3.
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: I would agree, unless it's a game like Seattle that
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: they should have won.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:13:13Speaker 20: Right.
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: But you know what I mean?
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: But if they compete and they show that, you know,
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: we can play with these guys, I'll feel a hell
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: of a lot better than I do right now.
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: Like if you came, if you went into the Seattle
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: game and said, they're going to lose 13 to 10
- 1:13:24Speaker 6: and they're going to, you know, they're going to go
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: nose to nose. They're going to have a chance to
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: win and they're going to fall just short in a
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: vacuum that I would, I would have, I would have said, well, okay.
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: I'm defending champs, ring ceremony, all that. I'll take it.
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: When you watch the game, you're sick to your stomach.
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: You let one slip away. The other team's quarterback missed
- 1:13:42Speaker 6: the whole game, and you throw three interceptions in the
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: fourth quarter. You let a game slip away. If they
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: do something like that against Buffalo, like if Buffalo has
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: a repeat performance of what they just did against the
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: Chargers and you still can't beat them, I'm not going
- 1:13:55Speaker 6: to feel good losing a close game if the other
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: team played like crap and you still lost.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: All right, so from what we've seen with Drake, are
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: we ready to say that Christian in L.A. is our daddy? Sure.
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: Well, here he is. Christian in L.A., take your victory lap.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: What's he, victory lap?
- 1:14:13Speaker 7: Hey, you guys.
- 1:14:14Speaker 11: Hey, so, yeah, I'm going to push through the front
- 1:14:18Speaker 11: end of this stuff and then get to where I
- 1:14:19Speaker 11: think matters going forward. We are talking about a quarterback
- 1:14:24Speaker 11: who has 20 turnovers, 60 sacks. to only seven touchdowns
- 1:14:30Speaker 11: since the beginning of the playoffs, which I consider premium competition.
- 1:14:34Speaker 11: I know you guys like to discount the playoffs from
- 1:14:36Speaker 11: last year, go, well, you know, it's only.
- 1:14:37Speaker 20: Two games, three games.
- 1:14:39Speaker 11: It's actually since the beginning of the playoffs, 20 turnovers.
- 1:14:42Speaker 11: That's nine fumbles to 11 interceptions, 50 sacks to seven touchdowns.
- 1:14:48Speaker 20: Something bigger than what we're talking about is going on.
- 1:14:51Speaker 11: And if you need any evidence that it's really about
- 1:14:54Speaker 11: scheming and play calling, look at what happened last night
- 1:14:57Speaker 11: with Case Keenum. Ben Johnson made Case Keenum look like
- 1:15:00Speaker 11: Patrick Mahomes to a defense that was supposed to be
- 1:15:02Speaker 11: one of the top-rated defenses in the league. So let's
- 1:15:05Speaker 11: have a real conversation about how scheming is going to
- 1:15:09Speaker 11: have to change. We have an offensive coordinator, though he
- 1:15:11Speaker 11: won coordinator.
- 1:15:12Speaker 20: Of the year last year.
- 1:15:14Speaker 11: The league has a 20-something-year book on his play calling.
- 1:15:17Speaker 11: And if he stops for one second and gets stagnant
- 1:15:20Speaker 11: for one second in his play calling, the league easily
- 1:15:22Speaker 11: catches up, and now we're in a hole where we
- 1:15:24Speaker 11: can't do anything that anybody doesn't see coming.
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: I'll get past that.
- 1:15:28Speaker 16: Here's my question for you guys.
- 1:15:31Speaker 11: It looks like we might come out of the front
- 1:15:34Speaker 11: end of the season 1-8 or 2-7.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: Is there.
- 1:15:43Speaker 11: Any credence to, like, we're in the Jeremiah Smith lottery,
- 1:15:47Speaker 11: or is it like, okay, we turn this around and
- 1:15:49Speaker 11: we end up somewhere in the middle?
- 1:15:51Speaker 16: I'll take it off the air.
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: Okay. Listen, if they're 1-8, I mean, you know, that's it.
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: If you end up with a top-five pick, you're definitely
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: in the Jeremiah Smith lottery because there's teams that are
- 1:16:03Speaker 6: going to be looking for quarterbacks, and you might be
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: the one that, that's in the top five, that doesn't
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: take it. I just can't see a scenario that they're
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: going one and eight.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we're getting ahead of ourselves with that.
- 1:16:13Speaker 6: Like, you know, you have Miami twice and the Jets twice.
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: At bare minimum, that's got to be one and three.
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: I mean, three and one, sorry, against those. I mean,
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: you cannot lose to Miami. It's the worst team in football.
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: And the Jets, I think, are going to make you
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: work for it. I think a little bit more of
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: the Jets than Evan does, but it's still two games
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: that you should win. The Raiders is a team you
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: should beat, and right now the Chargers don't look like
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: they're capable of beating anybody. The Buffalo Bills did everything
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: in their earthly power to hand them a game the
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: other day, and they still really didn't even come close
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: to winning it. I mean, at the end of the day,
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: they had to kick a field goal to get within
- 1:16:49Speaker 6: eight with 30 seconds left. And again, the other team
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: turned the ball over five times. So the Chargers are
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: a mess right now. Maybe they'll be better at the
- 1:16:56Speaker 6: end of the year. Maybe not. So, like, if you win,
- 1:17:00Speaker 6: that's five, six games. If you go five and one
- 1:17:04Speaker 6: in that stretch, that takes you out of the Jeremiah
- 1:17:06Speaker 6: Smith category, right? Even if nothing else goes right the
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: rest of the year, you win six, seven games, you're
- 1:17:12Speaker 6: not getting Jeremiah Smith.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: Well, it's a good quarterback draft, too. You might be
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: able to move the pick for, you know, multiple picks.
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: Can we not just talk about drafts? I thought he.
- 1:17:21Speaker 6: Was going somewhere else.
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: Come on.
- 1:17:23Speaker 6: You just gave Evan and me a heart attack.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: Jeremiah Smith, like, and all that, though, like.
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: Can I just say something real quick about Josh? And
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: I can't wrap my head around this. I mean, these
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: are the same conversations we said about Matt Patricia, who
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: had no idea what he was doing, Alex Van Pelt, who,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: you know, was a first-time coordinator. So I'm not here to, like,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: tell you that– but I just cannot wrap my brain
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: around how we're having the same conversations and criticisms of
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: this offense with two guys who were inexperienced offensive coordinators,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: and Josh McDaniels is one of the most experienced offensive
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: coordinators in the history of the league. And I'm not
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: saying that he's great and everything. I just– did he
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: forget how to scheme? Did he forget? Like, I don't–
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: was it terrible last year and somehow Drake just made
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: it work? Like, someone explain it to me because I
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: can't make it make sense in my head.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: I don't have any problem and I still don't have
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: any problem with their drop at passing game in terms
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: of how it's designed. The execution of it is a
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: totally different conversation. I put that on the players. You know,
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: maybe it's on the coaching in terms of, you know,
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: decisions and landmarks and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: The run game you would tighten about that.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: The run game squarely at his feet. The run game
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: to me is outdated. It's stale. And until they find
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: more creative ways to run the football, then they're going
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: to be running the brick walls.
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: But remember when we were saying, oh, this is a
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: loaded wide receiver room? Remember when we were saying that?
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: With A.J.
- 1:18:40Speaker 9: Brown.
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:18:42Speaker 20: So A.J.
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: Brown's not here, and all of a sudden it's not.
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: It's not loaded without A.J.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: Brown. But there's plenty there. There's plenty.
- 1:18:50Speaker 6: Game should not be like this.
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: To me, if you say a wide receiver room is loaded,
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: it has to go beyond your number one.
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: I think it's perfectly fine as long as you had
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: your number one.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: Right, it's a pecking order thing.
- 1:19:02Speaker 6: You're putting other people in spots that they're not capable of.
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: Matt Collins is a good complimentary guy. You're asking him
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: to do more than that.
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: But I think we were also hoping that Pop Douglas
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: and Kyle Williams were going to be better than they were.
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: I didn't think anything of Kyle Williams, so that's not
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: part of my mindset at all.
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: What about Pop Douglas?
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: He's been exactly what I thought.
- 1:19:23Speaker 12: Well.
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: He's wide open, 30 yards downfield. Your quarterback can't hit him.
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: I don't know what else he's supposed to do.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: I just think that.
- 1:19:31Speaker 6: What has he done wrong?
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: I think with what Dobbs is doing, I think you're
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: not a deep room right now. You're not a deep room.
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: It's Matt Collins. Or bust.
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: It's not a deep room. I would say that.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: Wouldn't you say that?
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: I mean, as far as the way Drake is playing
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: the game, yeah.
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: It's Mack Hollins or bust right now.
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: But it's fine if you have A.J. Brown.
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: But you don't have him. No, I know. And what
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: I'm saying is you lost one guy, and now all
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: of a sudden.
- 1:19:58Speaker 6: But that's the case with a lot of teams when
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: they lose their top guy. Well, then we want that.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: Team to be good.
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: Minnesota couldn't do anything without Justin Jefferson the other day.
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: They still found a way to win the game.
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: What I'm saying is we weren't that deep to begin with.
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: I disagree with you.
- 1:20:11Speaker 6: I think this is on Drake May, not the receivers.
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: That's just me.
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: But there's a difference between having good depth and having
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: top-end talent. Do you think we have good depth? I
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: think their wide receiver room has depth. I don't think
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: they have their top-end talent. They don't have their guy.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: The guy is A.J.
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: Brown.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Those are two different things to me. Maybe it's semantics,
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: but to me, that's two different things.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: Do they have depth beyond A.J. Brown?
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: I think they do.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Yes, but I'm not expecting depth to be a number
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: one wide receiver.
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: I didn't say that. I never said that.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: Okay, but I'm trying to tell you what my thought is.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: I think it's two different conversations. Do they have a
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: deep wide receiver?
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: So have the conversation about the depth.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: I think their depth is fine. I think their depth
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: at wide receiver is fine. I don't think that they
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: have a top dog. They don't have a Diggs. They
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: don't have a Brown because he's on injured reserve.
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: I think if.
- 1:21:06Speaker 6: The quarterback was playing like he did last year, we
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: wouldn't be having this conversation.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: Simple.
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: I think there's been plays to be made, and he's
- 1:21:15Speaker 6: not making them on a consistent basis.
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: I would agree that, too.
- 1:21:19Speaker 6: Are the receivers great?
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: No.
- 1:21:21Speaker 6: But there's depth at receiver. They have two or three
- 1:21:24Speaker 6: guys that can play. He ain't getting the ball to
- 1:21:27Speaker 6: him on a consistent basis.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Plus, my hope was that with A.J. Brown in the mix,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: it would just give him and Dobbs a little bit
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: more breathing room to find their stride and to develop.
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: And now it's all on Romeo Dobbs.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: And how out of position is he playing? That's something
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: watching this game in particular. They expected A.J. Brown to
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: play the X. They expected him to be the guy
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: on the outside. now Romeo Dobbs is having to do
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: a lot more of that. And he went all training
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: camp as like the second guy on the Z receiver
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: side with AJ Brown on the other side. And they
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: practiced all summer long like that. And now they're in
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: a position where they kind of need him to be
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: playing almost in a different role than I think what
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: they envisioned him playing. And it's not really working. Like,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: so I don't, I think depth and, and talent are
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: like kind of two different things. Like, I think they
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: have numbers in the wide receiver room. I think every
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: team has that, but, but they have guys that can
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: play NFL football in that wide receiver room. They don't
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: right now. They don't have top end talent. They don't
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: have an elite guy because he's on injured reserve. So
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: you have to weather the storm until he comes back.
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: So I would just say, I'm just going to use
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: the most recent game as an example. And clearly if
- 1:22:38Speaker 6: you had to do it over again, Knowing A.J. Brown's
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: going to get hurt, man, you'd really love to still
- 1:22:43Speaker 6: have Stephon Diggs instead of Romeo Dobbs. I don't think
- 1:22:46Speaker 6: anybody would make that argument against that, not even the
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: stubborn guy me. I would say that obviously worked last
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: year with Drake May. You'd feel like you're in a
- 1:22:55Speaker 6: better spot. But I think a lot of the stuff,
- 1:22:58Speaker 6: a lot of the ways that we're talking about the
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: Patriots receivers right now without A.J. Brown is kind of
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: very similar to what you just watched in Jacksonville. Parker Washington,
- 1:23:07Speaker 6: Jacoby Myers, and Brian Thomas. By the way, was Brian
- 1:23:09Speaker 6: Thomas even out there the other day? I kind of.
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: Think he had one.
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: Catch in the game. He didn't really notice him at all.
- 1:23:18Speaker 6: Do they look good enough? They could also run the ball.
- 1:23:21Speaker 6: But did they look good enough? Yeah, more than good enough. Right,
- 1:23:24Speaker 6: because the quarterback made plays and got on the ball.
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:23:28Speaker 6: When your quarterback gets on the ball, and Drake May
- 1:23:31Speaker 6: will do that. I refuse to believe that Drake May
- 1:23:36Speaker 6: finished runner-up to the MVP and now can't complete a pass.
- 1:23:39Speaker 6: I refuse to believe that there's that much of a difference.
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: I expected a regression to the mean. This isn't the mean.
- 1:23:46Speaker 6: This is right on the other side. So I think
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: he will get better. I don't know when that's going
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: to happen. He's got to get comfortable. And when he
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: does get comfortable and he does more resemble what he
- 1:23:55Speaker 6: was last year, he's going to be able to get
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: the ball to Matt Collins and Romeo Dobbs and to
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: Mario Douglas. These guys are good enough to make more
- 1:24:03Speaker 6: plays than they've made so far. They're not this bad,
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: to your point, at the very start of the show, Fred, offensively.
- 1:24:09Speaker 6: This offense is better than this. Did I miscalculate? Yep,
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: I was wrong. I thought this was going to be
- 1:24:14Speaker 6: a 30-point-per-game offense. I thought they were going to light
- 1:24:17Speaker 6: it up based on what I was seeing in the summer.
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: I was wrong about that, but they're better than this.
- 1:24:23Speaker 6: They have to be, right? Am I just being sunshine.com?
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: No, they have to be better than this.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: They have to be better than the worst offense in
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: the league.
- 1:24:32Speaker 6: And they are. They're right there with Miami.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: That's why you said the worst team in the league.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: I'm like, well, what if you got the worst offense?
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: They're averaging less than a touchdown a game.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they have two touchdowns on 30 drives.
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: Less than a touchdown a game.
- 1:24:47Speaker 6: And I'll tell you something that's really, you know, I'm
- 1:24:49Speaker 6: going to go on the other side now and be
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: critical of the offense. Something that's kind of been bugging me.
- 1:24:53Speaker 6: I mean, hearing a lot of, like, They have an
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: insane number of drives that have gone into the other
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: team's territory that they haven't scored on. And they're talking
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: about this and that. So they're moving the ball. No,
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: they're not. No, they're not.
- 1:25:07Speaker 7: 22nd.
- 1:25:07Speaker 6: Okay, they're not moving the ball. Their yards, every game
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: will tell you they're not moving the ball all that great.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: And this, to me, stood out to me. They have
- 1:25:15Speaker 6: six drives to the red zone. Nowadays, you take over
- 1:25:19Speaker 6: at the 35-yard line. So it's one first down to
- 1:25:23Speaker 6: get in the other team's territory. So that doesn't really
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: mean what it used to mean, getting into the other
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: team's territory. They're not moving the ball consistently in games.
- 1:25:31Speaker 6: They're not punting a lot because teams don't punt that
- 1:25:34Speaker 6: much anymore. Because you're not generally backed up to your
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: own goal line constantly now. Everybody goes for it on
- 1:25:43Speaker 6: fourth down. No one punts.
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: I would say, though, that they are 12th in yards
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: per drive. So, like, they... They're better than, I would say,
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: at moving the ball than they are at scoring, if
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: that makes sense. I'm not saying that they're.
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: They're definitely better at moving the ball. They haven't scored
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: at all.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: I'm not saying that they're moving the ball like they're
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: averaging 500 yards a game or anything like that.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: They're barely getting to 300, which is.
- 1:26:06Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: But I, but I think that, you know, like totally,
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: we don't have to get into a whole total yards discourse,
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: not my thing, but like that, like the point is,
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: is like, they are having drives where they're moving the
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: ball better than what their points per game would indicate.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: Speaking of punting thought that occurred to me, teams don't
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: want to punt to Marcus Jones. And I don't, I
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: don't blame them until they, until we can solve that,
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: What would you think about taking Marcus Jones out of
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: that duty, let him focus on playing corner, putting somebody
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: else back there? Maybe we might get some chances to
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: return a few punts. But in the meantime, you're kind
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: of saving Marcus Jones and letting him focus on defense
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: for now because they're not punting to him anyway.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: If he was a full-time defensive player, I might. bite
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: on that, but I think he's already a part-time defensive
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: guy anyway, so I think it's okay.
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: I mean, I like having that threat. It would only
- 1:27:01Speaker 6: be about his health to me. If he's banged up
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: and he needs the break, then I would give it
- 1:27:05Speaker 6: to him. Otherwise, I think he's too much of a threat.
- 1:27:07Speaker 6: Someone will screw it up.
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: He is too much of a threat.
- 1:27:10Speaker 6: Sometimes they screw it up.
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:27:12Speaker 6: It happened two games ago. Pittsburgh punted one right down
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: the middle to him. He returned it 19 yards. And oh,
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: by the way, that was the time they scored.
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: No, I think he's a threat, and I think other
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: teams know he's a threat.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no question. I think the first three teams,
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: I mean, good punters, but have done a good job
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: against him, as they should, you know.
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: Chris with a T-I-A-N. What's up, Christian? Hey, guys.
- 1:27:37Speaker 7: I want to get your thoughts on the wide receiver position.
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: I think we just gave them.
- 1:27:44Speaker 7: Yeah, no, I know. You went through a great... I mean,
- 1:27:46Speaker 7: you just went right through it. But my question is, like.
- 1:27:51Speaker 7: You obviously had to upgrade the position, and you did.
- 1:27:53Speaker 7: We all understand why. We all loved last year, lightning
- 1:27:57Speaker 7: in a bottle. But you couldn't go forward with Diggs
- 1:27:59Speaker 7: and Booty being, quote, your guys. They had to upgrade,
- 1:28:02Speaker 7: which was fine. But do you think that Rabel and
- 1:28:06Speaker 7: Stretch and Josh put too much faith in May? Maybe
- 1:28:11Speaker 7: it's a move that you make, but you do keep
- 1:28:14Speaker 7: one of those other guys just to have somebody there
- 1:28:16Speaker 7: that he's comfortable with. If May's in his sixth or
- 1:28:20Speaker 7: seventh year and he's playing like this, then, you know,
- 1:28:24Speaker 7: to me, that's inexcusable. I know he had a great
- 1:28:27Speaker 7: year last year, and we all know, been through it
- 1:28:30Speaker 7: at nauseam with the schedule and everything. But there's no way,
- 1:28:33Speaker 7: like you guys said, that everything that we saw in August,
- 1:28:37Speaker 7: albeit in practices, there's no way they're all vacations.
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: Bad.
- 1:28:42Speaker 7: They all can't be this bad, but his head is spinning,
- 1:28:45Speaker 7: and maybe if he did have all right, I know
- 1:28:47Speaker 7: I can go to booty, or I know I can
- 1:28:49Speaker 7: get digs on 36. Like, I know he's going to
- 1:28:51Speaker 7: catch it. You know, I know he's going to be there.
- 1:28:53Speaker 7: That would alleviate maybe him just forcing some of the
- 1:28:55Speaker 7: stuff to these guys who, quite frankly, just like him,
- 1:28:58Speaker 7: they all look lost. Like, Kyle Williams looked lost the
- 1:29:01Speaker 7: other day.
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: Well, listen, I agree with you. As long as the
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: receiver's doing the right thing, it shouldn't matter to the quarterback.
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: It shouldn't matter who he is. If he's in the
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: same spot that he's supposed to be, my job is
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: just to get him to the ball.
- 1:29:14Speaker 6: It's mattered this year. For whatever reason. I don't have
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: the answer to it, but there's been more than a
- 1:29:19Speaker 6: handful of plays where the ball's not where it's supposed
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: to be.
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Right.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: And what makes you think that it would be if
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: it was Keyshawn Booty running down the sideline?
- 1:29:26Speaker 6: I have no faith. Like, Stephon Diggs, I can hear
- 1:29:28Speaker 6: that all day. That was his guy on third and
- 1:29:30Speaker 6: sixth for seven.
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: Yeah, can beat man coverage.
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: Tayshaun Booty cut 33 passes. That wasn't the guy he
- 1:29:35Speaker 6: was leaning on in key spots. Yeah, I mean... He
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: made some big plays. Would I rather have him right now?
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: Yup.
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: Because nothing else is working. I'd rather have a guy
- 1:29:42Speaker 6: who worked at least 33 times last year than what
- 1:29:46Speaker 6: I have now. I mean, Romeo Dobbs has given them nothing.
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's fair second guesses and, like, if
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: you want to be critical of their personnel moves, you can.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: They're not walking through that door, so I don't really know.
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: It doesn't, yeah.
- 1:29:58Speaker 6: It's wasted breath.
- 1:29:59Speaker 7: Yeah, sure. Yeah, I get it.
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:30:01Speaker 7: No, I get it.
- 1:30:03Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:30:04Speaker 6: But I think if it doesn't turn around, that will
- 1:30:07Speaker 6: be the offseason narrative. They tinkered with things that necessarily
- 1:30:13Speaker 6: we all thought... I can't.
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: Be a fraud.
- 1:30:16Speaker 6: I thought they were good moves. I thought they upgraded
- 1:30:19Speaker 6: Diggs and Booty with Brown and Dobbs. It hasn't... I mean,
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: it's only three games, but if we talk 17 games
- 1:30:26Speaker 6: and it's not an upgrade, then they deserve to get
- 1:30:30Speaker 6: some criticism for that because they're supposed to know.
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: Yep. Right.
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: I asked this question, I think just before the season,
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: even with Dobbs in, in Brown on the team. Now,
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: are we comfortable with Kyle Williams and pop Douglas playing
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: at the level they played last year?
- 1:30:53Speaker 6: I would not have expected anything from Kyle Williams. He
- 1:30:55Speaker 6: didn't play last year. I didn't expect him to play
- 1:30:57Speaker 6: any more than he did last year.
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: This year.
- 1:30:59Speaker 6: Demario Douglas, I think, would be perfectly fine in the
- 1:31:02Speaker 6: role that he's in as a guy that they try
- 1:31:04Speaker 6: to get some big plays out.
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: Of the slot from. Are we good with them playing
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: at the level that they played last year? Yes.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Same, yeah.
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: You think that's good enough?
- 1:31:14Speaker 6: With Brown and Dobbs?
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: And assuming that Dobbs is.
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: But you're getting nothing from Brown and little from Dobbs.
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:31:20Speaker 6: That's the difference. Not Demario Douglas.
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: I know what you're saying, though, Fred. I had higher
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: expectations for Pop the year before. breakout a little bit.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: We're going to push the breakout every year?
- 1:31:32Speaker 6: I didn't. I still see the same guy who generally
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: is open and for whatever reason it doesn't work. I
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: don't know if it's on him because he's not where
- 1:31:43Speaker 6: he's supposed to be. That's why he missed him the
- 1:31:44Speaker 6: other day.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: I think that there's a man zone thing with Pop
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: that we've talked about multiple times. When they got him
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: on the on the dash pass and he was open,
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: it was man coverage. He just smoked the corner. He's
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: really good at that. He's really good at separating against man.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: Against zone, it gets a little bit murky. And then
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: I'd also say, like, when you're targeting him, I think
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: his ADOT the other night, it was like 25 yards
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: down the field.
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: He's 5'8.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: So, like, it's a small target down to be throwing a,
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: you know, deep balls to the one that he threw
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: to him along the sideline that was completed was almost
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: 50 yards in the air when you think about, you know,
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: the across the field, you know, it's a small target. So,
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: you know, that that's. It's on May to hit him. Like,
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: he's wide open. He's got to make the throws. But
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: I think that it's hard to hit a guy that
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: is that size, you know, 50 yards down the field.
- 1:32:39Speaker 6: But his whole, like, man zone thing, like Nevin says,
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: I totally agree with that. He's a flawed player. That's
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: why he's your fourth option. Like, if he wasn't a
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: flawed player, he'd be an elite slot guy.
- 1:32:52Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:32:52Speaker 6: But he generally is better against man coverage than he
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: is zone, so that limits you.
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: I don't know why a team would play any man
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: against the Patriots. With the way that they have receivers
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: that can get open against man, Drake can scramble against man.
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: He can extend plays against man.
- 1:33:09Speaker 6: That second part is the reason why I wouldn't play
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: a lot of man. That's the best part of their
- 1:33:13Speaker 6: offense is Drake May making a play.
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: Let's go to Philadelphia. Rashad, what's up, Rashad?
- 1:33:21Speaker 20: Hey, what's up, guys?
- 1:33:22Speaker 8: I've been listening to y'all for a while, so glad
- 1:33:25Speaker 8: I can get on the call list.
- 1:33:27Speaker 16: This is my first time calling in.
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: Sweet.
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: Welcome aboard.
- 1:33:31Speaker 13: Thanks.
- 1:33:32Speaker 8: I need some words of encouragement because I'm getting heckled
- 1:33:34Speaker 8: by all my Philadelphia friends and relatives.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: After last night?
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: Yeah, last night they should be quiet.
- 1:33:42Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, last night was great.
- 1:33:44Speaker 20: I gave them a dose.
- 1:33:47Speaker 8: So I just had a couple questions, you know, to
- 1:33:50Speaker 8: see your take on some things. Rabel had mentioned, like,
- 1:33:57Speaker 8: in his press conference, I think after the game, like,
- 1:33:59Speaker 8: you can't.
- 1:33:59Speaker 16: Be robots out there.
- 1:34:01Speaker 8: And it kind of, like, made me think, like, maybe,
- 1:34:04Speaker 8: I mean, going back to training camp, obviously Brown came
- 1:34:07Speaker 8: in and kind of the focus was to get him
- 1:34:09Speaker 8: up to speed as fast as possible. I don't know
- 1:34:12Speaker 8: if you guys think of this along the same lines
- 1:34:14Speaker 8: that Drake May is kind of, like, hypnotized to, like,
- 1:34:18Speaker 8: look for the Brown-type plays. And that way he's not
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: there now. And so a lot of the mistakes are, like,
- 1:34:26Speaker 8: you know, most of them, a lot of them are
- 1:34:27Speaker 8: like 50-50 balls, whereas, like, if your receiver's better than
- 1:34:30Speaker 8: your corner, he's going to make that play.
- 1:34:31Speaker 16: Like the Mac Jones, or Mac Collins, not.
- 1:34:34Speaker 20: Mac Jones, but, you know, not that.
- 1:34:36Speaker 8: But Mac Collins' touchdown versus Seattle was like a 50-50 ball.
- 1:34:40Speaker 8: I'm confident that Jones, or that Brown actually makes that
- 1:34:44Speaker 8: touchdown versus Seattle.
- 1:34:45Speaker 16: I got more confidence of that.
- 1:34:47Speaker 8: If it, you know, goes other ways, then, you know,
- 1:34:49Speaker 8: we kind of live with it. Same with the Dobbs,
- 1:34:53Speaker 8: deep pass, you know, next game, or... The same game,
- 1:34:57Speaker 8: the next interception on the left is more of an A.J.
- 1:35:00Speaker 20: Brown-esque pass.
- 1:35:01Speaker 16: And it just seems like Drake May is looking for these,
- 1:35:05Speaker 16: I guess, A.J. Brown-type throws.
- 1:35:09Speaker 8: And he's not really looking for what we did last year,
- 1:35:12Speaker 8: where Diggs was predominantly in short passes.
- 1:35:15Speaker 20: So I don't know if he's kind of like.
- 1:35:17Speaker 8: locked into that vision of it or not i mean
- 1:35:19Speaker 8: you guys see more practice and more things daily i
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: just see what the games and then with you know
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: media puts out there but i kind of put that
- 1:35:27Speaker 8: connection with that well now now.
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: That season started we don't really get to see anything
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: in practice um but thanks for the call rashad you
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: know we'll try to answer the question what do.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: You think i would say that His point about like
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: the 50-50 balls last year, they track a stat called
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: catch rate over expected, which is just like what's the
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: expected completion percentage versus the catch rate that actually happens.
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: And they had three receivers in the top 10 of
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: the league last year. Steph Diggs, Keyshawn Booty, Matt Collins,
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: all in the top 10 of the league. You know,
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: Paul brought this up earlier, like those 50-50 balls are
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: not going your way right now. Like they're either getting
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: picked off or they're going off receivers hands or whatever
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: last year.
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: Oh, and by the way, two of those guys are gone. Yeah.
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: You know, to, to the receivers credit last year, they
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: made a lot of really good plays on the football.
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: And I agree. I think A.J. Brown would be better
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: suited to make those types of plays than maybe some
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: of the guys he's throwing to right now. But that's also,
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: you know, can be a volatile way to live. Like
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: if that's what you're hoping the offense is going to
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: do is just moss people all the time, then, you know,
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: that's not necessarily the most consistent way to move the ball, too.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: So it's a little bit of a negative, positive and
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: a negative.
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: I guess.
- 1:36:39Speaker 6: Certainly A.J. Brown is a better player than.
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: Than Matt Collins. I mean, I would just use those
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: two examples that he used in Seattle. I would say
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: the best you could have hoped for if A.J. Brown
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: was the antenna receiver was two incomplete passes because his
- 1:36:52Speaker 6: physicality would have made sure that the other team didn't
- 1:36:55Speaker 6: didn't pick him off. But I mean, I don't know
- 1:37:00Speaker 6: the first, but the one that Dobbs, he got involved
- 1:37:02Speaker 6: in it and it ended up being deflected and they
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: caught the deflection. The other one, I think, I mean,
- 1:37:07Speaker 6: maybe Matt Collins ran the wrong route on that, the
- 1:37:11Speaker 6: one that ultimately decided the game. But where that throw
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: is and where the receiver is, like, that's not a
- 1:37:16Speaker 6: 50-50 ball. That's the only guy who had a chance
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: to catch that ball caught it, the defender. That wasn't 50-50.
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: Yeah. Let's go to North Carolina.
- 1:37:27Speaker 6: Eldred, what's up?
- 1:37:31Speaker 9: Eric, how y'all doing?
- 1:37:33Speaker 6: Good.
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: Great. All right.
- 1:37:35Speaker 9: Evan, I'm going to piss you off, Evan, so put
- 1:37:37Speaker 9: your gloves on, bro.
- 1:37:39Speaker 16: Okay?
- 1:37:41Speaker 9: It's Drake Mays' problem.
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: All right?
- 1:37:44Speaker 9: And now you said the ball noise, right? Your colleagues,
- 1:37:48Speaker 9: Taylor Cowles, all of them. And Fred, that play you
- 1:37:51Speaker 9: was talking about, it was Steven. And it was that.
- 1:37:55Speaker 20: And all he had to do was look off.
- 1:37:57Speaker 9: Quarterbacks aren't known to make the safeties move their eyes, right?
- 1:38:02Speaker 9: So that's the one Drake Mays thing you got to do, too.
- 1:38:05Speaker 9: But it's Drake Mayfield. For some reason, something is in
- 1:38:07Speaker 9: his head. I don't know if it's the wedding or what.
- 1:38:11Speaker 9: But this year, it ain't football.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: He got married a year ago, Eldridge. He got married
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: before the 2025 season.
- 1:38:16Speaker 9: Well, 2025 season, whatever, something is in his head, bro.
- 1:38:21Speaker 9: He looks lost. He looks broken or whatever.
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: Well, he said it himself. I can't get out of
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: my own way. Yeah.
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:38:28Speaker 9: And I believe that lady in North Carolina was right, too.
- 1:38:31Speaker 9: He's missing his two weapons, but like Brady had, too.
- 1:38:34Speaker 9: Like everybody else had, too. You got to throw to
- 1:38:37Speaker 9: whoever's there. I don't care if he's 5'5, or 5'10,
- 1:38:39Speaker 9: or 6'11. You have to throw it to him. It's
- 1:38:42Speaker 9: on you. You know, and, yes, the Lions let him
- 1:38:46Speaker 9: down a little bit. But according to your other guys, man,
- 1:38:49Speaker 9: he got three-point post-sucks to throw. Either he's missing the
- 1:38:52Speaker 9: wide receivers or the receivers ain't open, and he's forcing it.
- 1:38:55Speaker 12: So, mainly it's him.
- 1:38:57Speaker 9: And we can't lose games because of Drake May. Not
- 1:39:00Speaker 9: like y'all said last year, you'll win games because of him.
- 1:39:03Speaker 9: But you can lose games because of him, too. So,
- 1:39:05Speaker 9: lately we've been losing because of him. So, I don't
- 1:39:07Speaker 9: know what's in his head. But somebody's got to get
- 1:39:10Speaker 9: it out of them. I hope they get it out soon.
- 1:39:11Speaker 6: That's priority number one.
- 1:39:13Speaker 12: Yep.
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: I don't think anybody's... All right, Eldred.
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: Imparting truth. Eldred from North Carolina. Something's going on. They've
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: got to figure that out. Let's go.
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: Let's not blame the wife, all right?
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: Back to Philadelphia. Willems and Philum. What's up, Willem?
- 1:39:29Speaker 7: What's up, Fred?
- 1:39:30Speaker 20: How you doing?
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: Good. How you doing? Uh... I don't know.
- 1:39:34Speaker 20: Let me just say it like this. God damn. I
- 1:39:42Speaker 20: don't know what I'm watching. I don't know what I saw.
- 1:39:46Speaker 20: What in the world happened to our boy, man?
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: I know. I know.
- 1:39:51Speaker 20: Eldridge hit it right up. Something's in his head. I
- 1:39:56Speaker 20: don't know if they heightened something from y'all in terms
- 1:40:00Speaker 20: of Mark Rayburn and all of them. something's going on
- 1:40:03Speaker 20: with Drake and I don't know what it is. Cause
- 1:40:05Speaker 20: I don't understand how you was the runner up for,
- 1:40:09Speaker 20: for MVP last season. And now you just turned into
- 1:40:12Speaker 20: a pumpkin. You just forgot. So now you can't read
- 1:40:14Speaker 20: man coverage. You don't have deciphered cover six. Uh, you
- 1:40:18Speaker 20: have all these issues and I don't, I don't, I
- 1:40:21Speaker 20: am scared to death right now. I'm going to tell
- 1:40:24Speaker 20: you something else to worry about. I'm gonna leave it
- 1:40:26Speaker 20: at that at this. Um, If A.J. Brown comes back, well,
- 1:40:31Speaker 20: he comes back, right? You think he wants to see
- 1:40:34Speaker 20: Drake not trying to put this all together? You know
- 1:40:39Speaker 20: what I mean? I know.
- 1:40:40Speaker 3: That's not what he came here for.
- 1:40:42Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:40:43Speaker 20: And if he comes back and he's still this way,
- 1:40:46Speaker 20: we're going to have problems.
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:40:48Speaker 20: We're going to have some serious problems.
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: Well, we've got a few games before he's coming back,
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: so maybe they can work it out. But, Will, I
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: feel your pain. Thank you for the call. If Drake
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: had actually won, the MVP last year. Would it have
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: been worse now than it is? I mean, it's hard
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: to imagine, but would it be even worse?
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: I mean, a little bit, because he was the MVP
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: last year.
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: He was the MVP. It's not like he was a runner-up.
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: He was the MVP runner-up last year.
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: No. I don't think it would be any different. You
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: don't think it would matter?
- 1:41:16Speaker 6: I don't think it would be any different.
- 1:41:17Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:41:18Speaker 6: Because he has an MVP-worthy season. Yeah. It's just kind
- 1:41:22Speaker 6: of concerning to me.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: And it was, it happened in the first game when
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: AJ Brown went down and happened in this, this last
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: game after the, the fumble where I'm just like, why
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: is this team seem so fragile? Like, you know, like
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: it just, AJ Brown went down in Seattle. They fell apart.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: You know, Drake throws a, you know, or has a
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: bad fumble. They fall apart. Like I just, they should
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: have some confidence. Like, and I know this is a
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: new team and you're not carrying over stuff from last year,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: but him at least.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: It's another great point. Well, Troy Brown, I was listening
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: to the post game show and, Troy Brown was talking
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: about that look in the eye of a quarterback in
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: the huddle. And it trickles down to the rest of
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: the team. It was important for him to see that
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: confidence in his quarterback.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: Was his quarterback always that confident when he's thrown nine
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: interceptions or whatever? I mean, I think Vrabel has been
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: asked about this and like, Confidence and all that stuff
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: comes from winning. It comes from having success.
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: It does.
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: It's pretty hard. Tom Brady, obviously, was Tom Brady. He
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: had the confidence because he was winning Super Bowls.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: I think right now, it's... No, but Troy said that
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: the moment young Tom Brady came into the huddle, he
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: could see something in him.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: I'll take his word for it. That was before the winning.
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: I'm sure a lot of people saw something in Drake
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: May last year.
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: I don't know. We have two years of his head coach...
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: constantly reminding him, go lead your team. Go see your players.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but before, maybe the playoff run aside, I guess,
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: but in the regular season, we're talking about him having
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: MVP caliber season. You don't think he got into the huddle.
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: They were confident in him last year. Of course they were.
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: They were playing well. They were winning. He was playing well. Like,
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: it's hard to have confidence and hard to have energy,
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: and it's hard to have those things.
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: It is hard to do when you're not winning, but
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: that's when it's most needed. Right.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: And, I mean, this happened with A.J. Brown a quarter
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: into the game. Like, so, you know what I mean? Like,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: you shouldn't need to have had six.
- 1:43:17Speaker 6: Three quarters.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: I'm going to go with two. Very beginning of the
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: third quarter.
- 1:43:20Speaker 6: Two and a half. It was the middle of the
- 1:43:21Speaker 6: third quarter.
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: You haven't had success or failure. A guy just got hurt.
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: Deal with it.
- 1:43:26Speaker 6: It happens every game. I like your point the best.
- 1:43:29Speaker 6: It was like when you talked about earlier some of
- 1:43:31Speaker 6: the older guys might be sort of on the other
- 1:43:33Speaker 6: side now. I thought Sunday's game was strikingly eerily similar
- 1:43:41Speaker 6: to the 4-13 teams where they would do things and
- 1:43:45Speaker 6: you'd be like, okay. Things are going all right, and
- 1:43:48Speaker 6: then something would happen, and okay, that's the end of
- 1:43:52Speaker 6: the competitive portion of this game because they're going to
- 1:43:54Speaker 6: tuck tail and run home. And the A.J. Brown injury
- 1:43:58Speaker 6: was an example of that in the first game, and
- 1:44:01Speaker 6: him dropping the ball on the fumble was an example
- 1:44:03Speaker 6: of it in this game. They did not have any pushback, really,
- 1:44:07Speaker 6: the rest of the game.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: These are the things that I put on Vrabel. This
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: is why I think it's such a good point, Ev.
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: When you're talking about this.
- 1:44:18Speaker 6: We made a lot of this during the offseason when
- 1:44:21Speaker 6: we talked about last year, one of the biggest things
- 1:44:24Speaker 6: they had going for them was a complete intangible of
- 1:44:27Speaker 6: this culture, this winning culture that was so remarkably impressive
- 1:44:32Speaker 6: that he created overnight. These guys knew they were good
- 1:44:38Speaker 6: before proof of concept. They knew they were good. They
- 1:44:42Speaker 6: had a swagger about them, but we all said... that
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: was the 25 team, it'll be incumbent upon Mike Vrabel
- 1:44:50Speaker 6: and the 26 team to recreate that. That's not easy
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: to do. And you're seeing it's hard, and I agree
- 1:44:56Speaker 6: with Evan. I think some of that falls on Mike Vrabel.
- 1:45:00Speaker 6: He's got to recreate it.
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: To me, like, that... I'm not saying that he doesn't
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: know football or anything like that, but he is supposed
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: to be a galvanizer. He is supposed to be a
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: leader of men. That's his sort of superpower. We talk
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: about players having superpower. I think Mike Rabel's superpower is
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: that gravitas that he has. And I don't... Right now,
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: I don't see that.
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: I'm going to kind of echo what a lot of
- 1:45:26Speaker 3: people are saying. I don't care if he's Vince Lombardi,
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: Bill Belichick. If your quarterback's playing this way.
- 1:45:34Speaker 6: It's hard. I'm not putting it all on Vrabel, but
- 1:45:36Speaker 6: I'm saying that's part of it.
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: He's got to share some of the responsibilities.
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: I think, obviously, it comes from the top down. We
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: said that early on in this show. No one is
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: exempt from this.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: I think that's part of why I like taking myself
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: out of this situation where we're so involved with. There's
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: a morbid curiosity about this because it is so interesting
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: how it completely devolves so quickly and Can this kid
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: find himself again? Can Mike Rabel pull him out? It's
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: got to be one of the biggest challenges in professional sports.
- 1:46:08Speaker 3: The good news is we're three games in. I'd rather
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: have this happen now than after Thanksgiving when you're kind
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: of still in it and things fall apart. There's time.
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: They can figure this out, I think. Again, like we
- 1:46:24Speaker 3: all said, they can't be this bad that we saw
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: in this last game. I refuse to believe that. But
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: it's going to take. A really strong effort from Mike
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: Vrabel to turn this thing around and then him and
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: Josh McDaniels and whoever else needs to get into Drake
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: May's head to help him turn it around too. It's
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: going to take a village. It's going to take everybody.
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: We're going to learn a lot about Drake May and
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: his mental toughness. I think that You know, we talk about, like,
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: is he long-term? Are we giving him the contract? Is
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: he the guy? If he pulls himself out of this
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: and he comes out the other side and he starts
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: playing like he did last year.
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: Then he'll never be bad again. Once he comes out
- 1:47:07Speaker 3: of this, he has been to hell. He has seen hell.
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: And now he can rise out of it.
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: And that's just, I still think Drake May has all
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: the physical.
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: Am I being too dramatic?
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: Three games.
- 1:47:20Speaker 6: Like, this is the worst he's ever going to have
- 1:47:22Speaker 6: in the history of his career.
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: It's going to be bad.
- 1:47:25Speaker 3: It's going to be ups and downs. You know what
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: I was thinking about when I watched that game on Sunday?
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: That punter that melted down in the 90s.
- 1:47:33Speaker 6: Pat O'Neal.
- 1:47:33Speaker 3: Pat O'Neal.
- 1:47:34Speaker 6: Troy talked about him on Sunday.
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: Oh, did he?
- 1:47:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: Okay. We saw a meltdown of a player in a game.
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: And that's what I felt like I was watching. I
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: felt that our quarterback was melting down.
- 1:47:45Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: Well, I just think for me, Drake May has all
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: the tools that he needs. And that's why I'm still
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: confident in him and I'm still betting on him. And
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: I go back to thinking of Sam Donald here seeing ghosts.
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: And it was a long up and down journey for him.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Are we so quick to just cut bait with a
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: kid the second it's not going great? To me, it's
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: more interesting to try to watch him pull through this
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: and invest in him. And I don't know that he's
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: going to be able to, but... I know that there
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: have been quite a few quarterbacks who have been in
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: this spot before that teams just gave up on and
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: that went on to become starters again. Now, I have
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: higher hopes for Drake May than Baker Mayfield and for
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: Sam Donald. I think he's a more talented quarterback than
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: those guys, but if he can't get over the mental hurdle,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: it's not going to matter.
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: How do you coach him this week? How would you
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: do it? Tough? Tough love? Ride his ass? Um, how
- 1:48:36Speaker 3: do you, how would you do it?
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: Well, it's so hard because I don't know what they've tried.
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: I think we, I know.
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: Well, I don't know what they tried in the past.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: And remember in the last couple of years when you
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: got to this point with like Mac Jones and Bailey Zappi,
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: it's like, well, what, you know, I'm going to be
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: hard on him this week.
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: I want to be easy.
- 1:48:48Speaker 3: I'm on.
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: I think you just, to me, it's like, you just
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: have to be steady and continue to be confident and
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: feed him the same things. I think schematically they're trying
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: to help him. I think Evan would say they need
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: to do more and I would agree with that. Um,
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: but I just don't know if there's a, we're going
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: to yell at him this week and then that's going to,
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: then that's going to make him.
- 1:49:03Speaker 6: I don't know what kind of player he is. Like
- 1:49:05Speaker 6: some guys you can't yell at. They don't respond to that.
- 1:49:08Speaker 6: Some guys you can, you know, like Pete Carroll could
- 1:49:10Speaker 6: never say anything to Russell Wilson. That was a famous
- 1:49:12Speaker 6: story in Seattle. And that was, you know, the way he,
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: the way he operated. And then, you know, other guys,
- 1:49:18Speaker 6: you know, I mean, I think the Belichick was really
- 1:49:20Speaker 6: hard on Brady.
- 1:49:21Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 1:49:22Speaker 6: You know, so if, Drake may is a guy who
- 1:49:26Speaker 6: will accept the hard coaching. I think you need to
- 1:49:28Speaker 6: be hard on this week. This is three weeks in
- 1:49:29Speaker 6: a row. Now, you know, we have an example of
- 1:49:32Speaker 6: an end zone interception. That's a different kind of play,
- 1:49:35Speaker 6: but it's the same kind of concept. The ball needs
- 1:49:37Speaker 6: to be thrown away there, Drake. And you, and you're
- 1:49:40Speaker 6: not throwing it away. You know, I understand the differences
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: in the plays and the spot on the field and
- 1:49:44Speaker 6: the situation in the game and all that.
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: And the opponent.
- 1:49:46Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 1:49:47Speaker 6: But it's the same kind of thing. The play wasn't there.
- 1:49:50Speaker 6: You need to throw it away. And he doesn't like
- 1:49:53Speaker 6: at some point, You can't be an over-repeater and get
- 1:49:56Speaker 6: away with it.
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: I'm interested to see him tomorrow in the press conference.
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: I'm just curious how he looks, how he feels.
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: I don't even want to touch that post-game press conference.
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: We were in the room. I was in the room.
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: That was one of those times where you sit it out.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: You just kind of sit there and listen.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: I said to Paul, I was like, The game was bad,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: but the press conference was really bad, too.
- 1:50:20Speaker 6: So we saw on Twitter, Mike saw early in the show,
- 1:50:23Speaker 6: someone had tweeted the part about the blood on the ball,
- 1:50:26Speaker 6: that he said that Jared Wilson had a cut in
- 1:50:28Speaker 6: his hand and he was bleeding on the ball and whatever.
- 1:50:31Speaker 6: And I thought it was a weird comment on the surface,
- 1:50:34Speaker 6: but I wanted to reserve judgment because I didn't hear
- 1:50:37Speaker 6: the context. And, you know, did someone ask about it?
- 1:50:40Speaker 6: Did someone notice it? You know, whatever. There were a
- 1:50:42Speaker 6: lot of different things that I didn't know just reading
- 1:50:45Speaker 6: the quote on Twitter. Then later in the show, we
- 1:50:47Speaker 6: get some of the sound that comes out of the
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: locker room, and we got Mike Vrabel talking about a
- 1:50:52Speaker 6: high level of concern for our team, which was eye-opening.
- 1:50:56Speaker 6: And Kevin Byard calling it an epic ass-whooping. It was
- 1:51:00Speaker 6: a good old-fashioned ass-whooping. And then we hear Drake and
- 1:51:03Speaker 6: some of the things that he said that you've already
- 1:51:05Speaker 6: said today about can't get out of my own way
- 1:51:07Speaker 6: and all that. But then we heard the rundown of
- 1:51:11Speaker 6: the blood on the ball, and it was completely unsolicited.
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: Yeah, he offered it up.
- 1:51:14Speaker 6: He offered that up, and I was like, That's even
- 1:51:18Speaker 6: worse than I thought just reading it on the surface.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a question I believe was Nicole asked it.
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: Nicole Yang just said, hey, can you just take us
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: through the three turnovers and what were you seeing? And
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: he said, oh, the first one, there was blood on
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: the ball. And then he went on to say, but,
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:51:32Speaker 3: That's somebody followed up.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: That's not an excuse, but that's what happened.
- 1:51:36Speaker 15: It is.
- 1:51:37Speaker 3: And then said it.
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: And then Jared Wilson's in the locker room, you know,
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: in postgame. And then Jared Wilson has to do his
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: scrum and he's showing the cut on his hand. And
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: like the whole thing, you know, to explain what happened
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: with the ball. The other thing that I thought is
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: weird that we haven't really talked about is like he
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: keeps dancing around the shoulder.
- 1:51:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:51:56Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:51:57Speaker 3: Why not just come out and say I'm fine? Yeah. Period.
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: Even if you're not.
- 1:52:00Speaker 3: End it.
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: Even if you're not.
- 1:52:01Speaker 6: The answer to the question is I'm fine.
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: I can't expect that tomorrow.
- 1:52:04Speaker 3: Yeah. We got to get Jerry Maddow on with him.
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: I believe I'm injured. The question was, is there something
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: wrong with your shoulder or along those lines? And his
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: response was, I wouldn't say that. But let me explain
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: all the things that might be.
- 1:52:24Speaker 6: I wouldn't say the shoulder's an issue.
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: What scares me is he says you would think, you know,
- 1:52:28Speaker 3: taking the time off.
- 1:52:30Speaker 6: Everybody's hurt.
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: But you said you would think, you know, in offseason
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: you'd get better. Okay, did you? Or didn't you? Right.
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: I was watching. I was on Saturday night. I couldn't sleep,
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: so I was scrolling. And I was watching a video
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: of Tom Brady. And he said that somebody asked him, like,
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: when he turned the corner and became a robot with
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: TB12 and all that kind of stuff. And he said
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: that it was because of shoulder pain, that he was
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: having chronic shoulder pain. In his right shoulder, in his
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: throwing shoulder. And so he just started to get maniacal.
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: Maniacal about his mechanics. Maniacal about his diet. Maniacal about
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: his workouts and all this type of stuff. All with
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: the goal to take pressure off of his shoulder. And so,
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: you know, I don't know anything. But I just wonder...
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: a little bit if the way that he's throwing the football,
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: if it's putting extra stress on his shoulder, because sometimes
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: his feet are not always underneath him consistently. And like here,
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: like we're, you know, having this kind of thing, but
- 1:53:34Speaker 2: like Brady said that it, it basically, it was not
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: anything to do with Drake may in the clip. It
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: was totally separate, but it, it completely dawned on me.
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: The problem is nothing. He said, put an end to
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: the conversation. No, So now it lingers.
- 1:53:51Speaker 6: And I understand, like, sometimes we can be, you know,
- 1:53:53Speaker 6: like these Neanderthals, but, like, we want our quarterbacks to
- 1:53:57Speaker 6: eliminate all those possible excuses.
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:54:01Speaker 6: Like, even if he has a separated shoulder.
- 1:54:04Speaker 7: No.
- 1:54:05Speaker 6: In the manual, it says you're supposed to say, I'm fine.
- 1:54:09Speaker 6: I just got to play better.
- 1:54:11Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:54:11Speaker 6: By you saying, I wouldn't say the shoulder's an issue,
- 1:54:14Speaker 6: and we all have bumps and bruises. Everybody's hurt. That,
- 1:54:18Speaker 6: to me, is... That's why I'm not playing well. There's
- 1:54:22Speaker 6: other things involved. My shoulder, the blood on the ball. That,
- 1:54:26Speaker 6: to me, is a bigger problem than the play.
- 1:54:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: And then the flip side of it is you don't
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: say anything about the blood. Then eventually they find out
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: about the blood. And then they say, oh, there was
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: blood on the ball. He didn't say anything about the blood, though.
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: Good for him. Good teammate.
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: Good leader.
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:54:41Speaker 6: And I think that Drake is learning this stuff. He's
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: still a young kid. What is he, 24?
- 1:54:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: So he's still learning some of this stuff.
- 1:54:48Speaker 3: Yeah. I just hope that somebody helping him. With that
- 1:54:52Speaker 3: aspect of.
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: Being a professional. I think that's got to be in you.
- 1:54:55Speaker 12: Really?
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: You've got to get it.
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: It's weird because you hear some of his teammates talk
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: about him, and a lot of them say that he
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: takes too much ownership of things.
- 1:55:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: Like, that he always blames himself for everything that goes
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: wrong and almost, like, puts too much. And I wonder
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: if some of that is what's going on with him mentally,
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: is that, like, he knows he's costing the team games.
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: And it's, like, killing him.
- 1:55:17Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:55:17Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: And it is... And I because I think it was
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: Matt Collins or someone said that last week that like
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: they have to remind him to stop being so self-deprecating. Like,
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: you know, everybody's got to play better. Everybody's got to
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: do things better.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: Blame some other idiots and yell at them, you know.
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: All right. Let's let's try to clean up the phones.
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: We've got a ton of emails and I apologize. We
- 1:55:39Speaker 3: didn't get to any of them. So what I'm going
- 1:55:41Speaker 3: to have Paul do is answer each one of them
- 1:55:43Speaker 3: after the show.
- 1:55:44Speaker 4: Perfect.
- 1:55:45Speaker 3: I'll have him go through all the emails and answer you.
- 1:55:47Speaker 6: I didn't know I was allowed to do that anymore.
- 1:55:49Speaker 6: That's exciting.
- 1:55:51Speaker 3: Todd's in North Carolina. What's up, Todd?
- 1:55:55Speaker 6: Todd.
- 1:55:56Speaker 4: Todd. Todd.
- 1:55:58Speaker 3: All right. Todd's gone. That makes it easy. Let's go
- 1:56:00Speaker 3: down to or up to Wisconsin. Chuck E. What's up,
- 1:56:04Speaker 3: Chuck E.? Chuck E.
- 1:56:04Speaker 12: Trees.
- 1:56:05Speaker 3: Hey, guys. How are you all?
- 1:56:07Speaker 12: Good.
- 1:56:08Speaker 3: Good.
- 1:56:08Speaker 7: I'm kind of quick here.
- 1:56:09Speaker 12: I wanted to point out Sunday, and I didn't get
- 1:56:11Speaker 12: a chance to call in, but all good disasters are
- 1:56:15Speaker 12: like tornadoes. You need multiple inputs. And I think we've
- 1:56:18Speaker 12: done a great job of covering all those. What I
- 1:56:23Speaker 12: would point out, Paul, you mentioned Sunday about your baseball career.
- 1:56:27Speaker 12: I might have the date wrong.
- 1:56:30Speaker 3: Hall of Fame baseball career, I'll have you say.
- 1:56:33Speaker 12: Yeah, so I was a pitcher, too, in high school.
- 1:56:38Speaker 12: But I know that I would come back from the
- 1:56:39Speaker 12: offseason and my shoulder would be cranky and it would
- 1:56:44Speaker 12: calm down in the offseason and I'd get through the
- 1:56:46Speaker 12: first few workouts and we'd get to the first couple
- 1:56:48Speaker 12: of games, start number three or four.
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: Paul never threw that hard. He didn't have to worry
- 1:56:52Speaker 3: about that.
- 1:56:53Speaker 6: That's fair.
- 1:56:55Speaker 12: But yeah, I just wonder, Drake, he's kind of striking
- 1:56:59Speaker 12: me as a humble sort of young man and I'm
- 1:57:02Speaker 12: I'm wondering if he's just trying to take some ownership
- 1:57:04Speaker 12: of his own aches and pains in all this, which,
- 1:57:07Speaker 12: like you said, he shouldn't be doing necessarily in the
- 1:57:10Speaker 12: post-game conferences. But I know it took five or six
- 1:57:14Speaker 12: years after high school baseball for me to calm my
- 1:57:16Speaker 12: shoulder down. Yeah, listen.
- 1:57:19Speaker 3: Yeah, as Evan said, the same thing happened to Brady. Right.
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: He figured out a way to deal with it.
- 1:57:26Speaker 6: How long was Brady listed on the injury report as
- 1:57:29Speaker 6: probable right shoulder?
- 1:57:30Speaker 3: It was seasons.
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: Thanks, Chuckie. Along with being insane and not eating sugar
- 1:57:36Speaker 2: for like 10 years. The other thing that he said
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: that he did was he really honed in on his
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: throwing mechanics. Because when your mechanical chain is broken, then
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: you're putting all the stress on your arm to drive
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: the ball. Whereas like quarterbacks that have good mechanics, they
- 1:57:51Speaker 2: use every part of their body to get power behind
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: the ball, especially their lower body. So like that, that
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: whole thing is like.
- 1:57:58Speaker 3: And really, how often do we see Drake really stepping
- 1:58:02Speaker 3: into his throws?
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: And I think to this point, he has such God-given
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: arm talent that he probably hasn't had to.
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: You know, like he can get it. I mean, I
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: mentioned the throw he made to Douglas was 49 yards
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: on a rope, like across the field.
- 1:58:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: So he doesn't really need to do it. But as
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: you get older, you know, the wear and tear on
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: the shoulder, it gets harder and harder. E.
- 1:58:24Speaker 3: E is in Baltimore. What's up, E? E. E. E. Yeah.
- 1:58:34Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:58:34Speaker 6: We got our own easy E right here.
- 1:58:36Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:58:36Speaker 6: We don't need E.
- 1:58:36Speaker 3: All right. Well, that's going to do it for our
- 1:58:38Speaker 3: Tuesday edition of Patriots Unfiltered. Again, I apologize to all
- 1:58:43Speaker 3: the emailers.
- 1:58:43Speaker 6: We'll get to a lot of emails tomorrow.
- 1:58:45Speaker 3: Yeah. We'll make a concerted effort to answer emails tomorrow.
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: We have to vent.
- 1:58:49Speaker 3: Try again. There were hundreds, which thank you. Thank you.
- 1:58:53Speaker 3: I know. Everybody wants to talk about it.
- 1:58:55Speaker 6: And I can just speak for Mike and I. We
- 1:58:58Speaker 6: had a lot of interaction in the post-game show, too.
- 1:59:00Speaker 6: A lot of calls, a lot of emails.
- 1:59:03Speaker 3: I heard early returns. It might have been the most
- 1:59:06Speaker 3: watched post-game show ever.
- 1:59:07Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you're welcome, Mike and I.
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: Stars of the show.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: Hold it a little dance in the middle.
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: It's not Troy Brown as he used to.
- 1:59:15Speaker 3: Jack Webb, too.
- 1:59:16Speaker 6: I lost a button at one point.
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: Female demograph through the roof.
- 1:59:20Speaker 3: Those older ladies, they'll know your demo. Tomorrow's another day.
- 1:59:25Speaker 3: We'll see you at 11.
