- 1:52Speaker 1: edition of Disguised Coverage. It will likely be the last
- 1:56Speaker 1: episode with the double Christmas trees. Believe in them up
- 1:58Speaker 1: through January. They will probably go away. The Little Guy
- 2:02Speaker 1: will likely go back over. There was riding out for
- 2:05Speaker 1: some superstition throughout January and then the Bill's lost and
- 2:08Speaker 1: I was like, heye, I like them. I'll keep them up,
- 2:10Speaker 1: but they'll likely come down at the end of this week,
- 2:13Speaker 1: which I know is why everybody tuned into this episode,
- 2:16Speaker 1: because I mean, there's not really anything to talk about.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It's been a pretty slow news cycle for the Buffalo
- 2:23Speaker 1: Bills the past couple of weeks. Last week, at this time,
- 2:28Speaker 1: we dove into it's just Tipping who says the Easter
- 2:33Speaker 1: Tree is due. Yeah, the Little Guy will be decked
- 2:34Speaker 1: out in Easter fulling up. Man, I'm almost so terrible
- 2:36Speaker 1: at this right there. Last week's episode, we dove into
- 2:40Speaker 1: a multitude of head coaching candidates for the Buffalo Bills,
- 2:45Speaker 1: including Clint Kobiak, Jesse Mintter, Chris Shula, Nathan Shieldhouse, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: we ended, or I ended, I should say, you know,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I kind of ranked the guys that I on it,
- 3:00Speaker 1: who I was looking into it. At the end, we
- 3:02Speaker 1: talked about Joe Brady and Brian Dable, my voice of
- 3:07Speaker 1: falling apart already Joe Brady and Brian Dable potentially being
- 3:10Speaker 1: rumored candidates. I also talked about my gut feeling. I
- 3:14Speaker 1: said this on multiple shows last week. My gut feeling
- 3:16Speaker 1: was Joe Brady was gonna be the head coach of
- 3:17Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills. I don't know why, just felt it,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and lo and behold, here we are a week later,
- 3:24Speaker 1: Joe Brady has been named Buffalo Bills head coach, in
- 3:29Speaker 1: I think somewhat of a surprise move for most fans
- 3:32Speaker 1: or those on social media, those on the internet. We're
- 3:36Speaker 1: going to dive into all of that tonight. Wasn't the
- 3:37Speaker 1: right move? Was it not the right move? How it
- 3:40Speaker 1: all looks in totality, the pros, the cons, what it
- 3:43Speaker 1: means going forward, some of the pieces that Joe Brady
- 3:48Speaker 1: and this team will need going forward, A really really,
- 3:51Speaker 1: really fun defensive coordinator rumor that we're going to be
- 3:55Speaker 1: diving into so it'll be fun and along the way.
- 4:00Speaker 1: This is a very contentious time, so questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 4:03Speaker 1: anything and everything you folks have who are watching here
- 4:06Speaker 1: live put it up into the live chat. As always,
- 4:08Speaker 1: super chats get priority. Last week's episode was chalk full
- 4:12Speaker 1: of comments and thoughts from everybody in the chat. I
- 4:14Speaker 1: almost didn't need to prepare any notes and couldn't just
- 4:17Speaker 1: ran with everything in the chat. So if we go
- 4:18Speaker 1: that way again this week, it's understandable and I get it.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And yeah's turning into group therapy as we always do
- 4:26Speaker 1: here and trying to make the show as engaging as possible.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Let's just dive right into Joe Brady being hired as
- 4:32Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills head coach. You know I alluded to
- 4:35Speaker 1: last week's episode. I ended last week's episode talking about
- 4:39Speaker 1: Joe Brady and Brian Dable and how I didn't really
- 4:42Speaker 1: want either as head coach. I spoke individually on them.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I don't have to rehash everything in dable comment there
- 4:50Speaker 1: that just came in. Do I have a defensive coordinator
- 4:51Speaker 1: choice in mine? I absolutely do, and I will be
- 4:54Speaker 1: going into that defensive coordinator choice slash wish in the
- 4:58Speaker 1: back end of this episode. But sorry to kind of
- 5:01Speaker 1: like teaz or like put that out there. I talked
- 5:04Speaker 1: about Dable. I'm not gonna get into it now because
- 5:06Speaker 1: he's of no consequence of the Bills right now. Well,
- 5:08Speaker 1: he's the Titans offensive coordinator now supposedly, so some consequence
- 5:11Speaker 1: you know, with the Titans being in the AFC and
- 5:13Speaker 1: in the NFL. But I spoke on Joe Brady and
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm still kind of at the same spot with him
- 5:20Speaker 1: as I was last week, and kind of talking about
- 5:21Speaker 1: this higher and I'm going to talk about it a
- 5:23Speaker 1: little bit and then we'll get to all the comments
- 5:24Speaker 1: and have it back and forth as we normally do
- 5:25Speaker 1: here on the show. I don't think that Joe brady
- 5:28Speaker 1: hire in and of itself is terrible. I don't think
- 5:33Speaker 1: Joe Brady is as bad as he was made out
- 5:36Speaker 1: to be this past year. I also don't think Joe
- 5:38Speaker 1: Brady was as good or as great as he was
- 5:40Speaker 1: made out to be the year prior, when everybody was
- 5:43Speaker 1: kind of anointing him as like the savior and the
- 5:46Speaker 1: chosen one of the offense, which again was funny because
- 5:49Speaker 1: everybody just just you know, heaping praise upon him in
- 5:52Speaker 1: the off season, and then it felt like six seven
- 5:55Speaker 1: weeks later, everybody wanted his head on a pike, but
- 6:01Speaker 1: I never thought we got a super chat. Thank you
- 6:03Speaker 1: very much for being here, Jason. I thank you very
- 6:04Speaker 1: much with the super chat. I appreciate you. Jason says,
- 6:07Speaker 1: a bit disappointed in the decision, but not surprised. The
- 6:10Speaker 1: hire will make me feel a lot better if he
- 6:12Speaker 1: can get a solid coaching staff in place. He really
- 6:15Speaker 1: needs to get an o C under him and needs
- 6:17Speaker 1: a strong DC. I guess I'll just dive into this
- 6:20Speaker 1: now one because you know this is a good segue
- 6:22Speaker 1: to a topic. I'll kind of come back to my
- 6:24Speaker 1: original point here. I agree one of the big things.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I think it's gonna matter a lot for Joe Brady,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and I don't think again what I'm about to say
- 6:31Speaker 1: is super revelatory. Who he chooses to bring in is
- 6:35Speaker 1: going to be of extreme importance, especially with you know
- 6:40Speaker 1: how important the run game was to the Buffalo Bills
- 6:43Speaker 1: offense this past season and the year before, and how
- 6:45Speaker 1: that was really something that Joe Brady hung his hat on.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Aaron Kromer's gone. Aaron Kromer was an integral part of
- 6:52Speaker 1: the Bills run game, one because he coached the offensive
- 6:54Speaker 1: line and did a great job raising their floor and
- 6:57Speaker 1: ceiling as a unit and as individual players. Also because
- 7:00Speaker 1: he was an integral part of the run game design
- 7:02Speaker 1: and putting those game plans together and kind of putting
- 7:04Speaker 1: it out in execution and actuality and taking it from
- 7:07Speaker 1: the chalkboard to the field. And now Aaron Kromer's gone,
- 7:11Speaker 1: you've got a hole at center, You've got a hole
- 7:13Speaker 1: at left guard. And then tying that into the offensive
- 7:17Speaker 1: coordinator spot. Joe Brady apparently will still call plays. Fun
- 7:21Speaker 1: little interesting nugget. Joe Brady's always been a guy who
- 7:24Speaker 1: sits in the box to do the offensive coordinator job.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Can't really have a head coach who's up in the box,
- 7:29Speaker 1: So that means he's gonna be calling plays for the sideline.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I know it might seem like a small thing, but
- 7:35Speaker 1: how does that change in vantage point going from because
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's a legitimate thing. Like you're up in the box,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you're able to see everything. You have the full like
- 7:42Speaker 1: all twenty two sideline view live and in person. You
- 7:45Speaker 1: can see the movings and the shakings of the opponent,
- 7:48Speaker 1: different personnels and numbers coming out into the field, all
- 7:50Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. Now you're gonna be an eye level.
- 7:53Speaker 1: You're on the sideline, you have more contact with Josh Allen,
- 7:56Speaker 1: You have more contact with the inner workings of the
- 7:58Speaker 1: game as the head coach. Like, So, how does that
- 8:00Speaker 1: work for Joe Brady? Who does he bring in his
- 8:02Speaker 1: offensive coordinator? Does he bring in someone who can lighten
- 8:05Speaker 1: his load? And in what way? Because again, if Joe
- 8:07Speaker 1: Brady's calling the plays, that means he's still running the offense.
- 8:11Speaker 1: So who does he bring in his OC? Is it
- 8:12Speaker 1: more of a figurehead position? Is it a vet someone
- 8:15Speaker 1: to help him run the show overall? Is it someone
- 8:18Speaker 1: young enough becoming or extremely detailed to help him game
- 8:20Speaker 1: plan and put things together to make, you know, the
- 8:23Speaker 1: weekly preparation aspect a little lighter for him, or the
- 8:26Speaker 1: game day prep or game day running a little easier
- 8:29Speaker 1: for him overall, or on the offensive side of the ball.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And then from a defensive coordinator standpoint, yeah, if he's
- 8:34Speaker 1: going to be running the offense, you need a defensive coordinator.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You need the Steve Spagnolo to the Andy Reid, you
- 8:42Speaker 1: need the lou Ana Rumo to Zach Taylor. You need
- 8:44Speaker 1: someone who can can completely run that side of the
- 8:48Speaker 1: ball for you, So you don't need to worry about
- 8:51Speaker 1: the defense. We're all you have to do is again
- 8:52Speaker 1: the Andy Reid. You go and you knock on the door,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you knock on Spags's door, and you say, hey, like,
- 8:56Speaker 1: how's a game plan coming this week?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Oh?
- 8:57Speaker 1: It's good, awesome. If you need anything, give me a shout.
- 9:00Speaker 1: That's what Joe Brady needs on the defensive side. I
- 9:03Speaker 1: very much so wanted to be somewhat in particular and specifically,
- 9:06Speaker 1: which we will get into on the back episode, back
- 9:08Speaker 1: half of this episode. But I think this is a
- 9:10Speaker 1: fair thought all around, Jason, thinking for being here and
- 9:12Speaker 1: thinking for the super chat Daniels. Ron says, watch with
- 9:18Speaker 1: the same player as r D gets a ton of sacks,
- 9:20Speaker 1: we'll see maybe different scheme, different coordinator, different game planning,
- 9:24Speaker 1: different play calling on that side of the ball. Could
- 9:26Speaker 1: take everybody, ratchet everybody up and make everybody better, could
- 9:29Speaker 1: keep everybody the same, Everything could get worse. You never know.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna go back and start to get to a
- 9:35Speaker 1: bunch of these comment but yeah, I you know my
- 9:37Speaker 1: issue with Joe Brady. You know I'm I'm underwhelmed, I'll say,
- 9:43Speaker 1: And it's not necessarily a Joe Brady thing. Again, I
- 9:44Speaker 1: don't think Brady was as bad as he was made
- 9:46Speaker 1: out to be this past year, just like I don't
- 9:48Speaker 1: think he was as great as he was made out
- 9:49Speaker 1: to be the year prior. I'm underwhelmed because of the
- 9:53Speaker 1: struggles we saw for a couple of reasons. One, you know,
- 9:56Speaker 1: just him individually in a vacuum, the struggles we saw
- 9:59Speaker 1: this year offensively and what they showed, you know, some
- 10:02Speaker 1: of the lack of adaptability, lack of creativity at times.
- 10:07Speaker 1: You know, he was a significant part of the shortcomings
- 10:11Speaker 1: this team had this year and the year prior. And
- 10:15Speaker 1: then he's an unknown quantity as a head coach and
- 10:18Speaker 1: kind of tying into that into the bigger picture, which
- 10:21Speaker 1: we talked about last week. You know, I think Sean
- 10:23Speaker 1: McDermott was part of the problem if we're just narrowing
- 10:25Speaker 1: it down to this season, even last year as well.
- 10:26Speaker 1: While you know, Brady's been here for four years, but
- 10:28Speaker 1: the last year was the offensive coordinator. I think Sean
- 10:32Speaker 1: McDermott was part of the problem. I understand him being fired.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I think Brandon Bean was a significant part of the problem.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I understand if he would have been fired. I think
- 10:42Speaker 1: Joe Brady was a significant part of the problems of
- 10:45Speaker 1: the problem or problems I understood if he would have
- 10:48Speaker 1: been let go. And just like that, all three of
- 10:51Speaker 1: those guys were also a significant part of the successes
- 10:54Speaker 1: and the wins that the team had, literally and figuratively.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Just like there were the pro and cons and successes
- 11:01Speaker 1: and failures and shortcomings for a lot of people within
- 11:03Speaker 1: the organization on field and off the field, on the
- 11:05Speaker 1: front office. But my thought with Joe Brady is that,
- 11:07Speaker 1: similar to what I said last week, is there's so
- 11:10Speaker 1: much culpability in the shortcomings of this team that kind
- 11:16Speaker 1: of just narrowing down to one person or one thing
- 11:19Speaker 1: for me doesn't feel good and doesn't necessarily add up.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And with Joe Brady staying and essentially getting a promotion,
- 11:26Speaker 1: Brandon Bean staying and getting a promotion, Sean McDermott going
- 11:29Speaker 1: it again, all seems like they're laying all of this
- 11:32Speaker 1: at Sean McDermott's feet. And maybe that's the case. And
- 11:35Speaker 1: again I'm not saying this to scapegoat mcdert to make
- 11:38Speaker 1: McDermott a martyr or seem like he was fine or
- 11:40Speaker 1: great or I didn't want him. God, I'm not saying
- 11:42Speaker 1: all that you know, and there are variables to know,
- 11:44Speaker 1: like maybe mcdermodd had an influence on Brady, so I
- 11:47Speaker 1: want to over all these things. But for me, there's
- 11:50Speaker 1: just so much muddiness and interconnectedness in the shortcomings of
- 11:56Speaker 1: this team the past couple of years that I preferred
- 11:58Speaker 1: a fresh start across the board, and we kind of
- 12:00Speaker 1: got like a glimpse of a fresh start, but largely
- 12:04Speaker 1: running it back with the same type of deal. That's
- 12:09Speaker 1: kind of why I don't like it. It's not you know,
- 12:10Speaker 1: Mina Chimes had a great take on this earlier today
- 12:14Speaker 1: when she was talking about it, and you know, kind
- 12:15Speaker 1: of sum it up. She said, it's not the Joe
- 12:17Speaker 1: Brady move in isolation. It's the totality of everything that
- 12:22Speaker 1: we've seen and kind of how everything is moving in
- 12:24Speaker 1: conjunction with one another. And that's where I'm at, Like,
- 12:26Speaker 1: I don't think Brady's terrible in and of himself. I
- 12:31Speaker 1: didn't think it was a terrible offensive coordinator. I liked
- 12:33Speaker 1: some of the things they did down the stretch. I
- 12:34Speaker 1: liked some of the wrinkles that we started to see
- 12:37Speaker 1: down the stretch. I like some of the newness that
- 12:39Speaker 1: we saw in the playoffs. I don't think his playoff
- 12:41Speaker 1: game plans were bad. And on the whole, the Bills
- 12:44Speaker 1: offense has largely been successful in his stead as offensive coordinator.
- 12:49Speaker 1: But when they've struggled, they've struggled like all Caps for
- 12:54Speaker 1: that struggle, and they've looked almost helpless at times. Granted
- 12:58Speaker 1: Josh Allen has been part of that. And oh we
- 13:01Speaker 1: gotta stop. We got super chat just the tipic can
- 13:03Speaker 1: new fantastic name is always. Thank you for being here
- 13:05Speaker 1: pretty much as always, and thank you for the super chat.
- 13:07Speaker 1: The comment here is if we can convince ourselves of
- 13:10Speaker 1: Curtis Samuel separation separation metrics, there's no telling how optimistic
- 13:15Speaker 1: we could talk ourselves into being Go Bills. Well said,
- 13:19Speaker 1: Well said, Well said, Well said, Oh this is funny
- 13:22Speaker 1: from Curtis saying, I also think Aunt should refer to
- 13:24Speaker 1: the new stadium as the Josh and kick credit for it.
- 13:27Speaker 1: That's funny. I like it. All this is funny comment too.
- 13:30Speaker 1: All I know is if we run hook and ladder,
- 13:32Speaker 1: we will lose. What's super funny about that is they
- 13:34Speaker 1: executed three tremendous hooking ladders. Granted you're probably not running
- 13:39Speaker 1: that unless you absolutely need to in, you're in dire straits.
- 13:43Speaker 1: But it's crazy that they ran that three times to
- 13:46Speaker 1: very successful results and lost all of those games. I
- 13:49Speaker 1: think it's three. It's really unfortunate Claude saying all this betrayal.
- 13:54Speaker 1: This feels like a Godfather movie. It wasn't until today
- 13:56Speaker 1: that I realized it was Joe Brady all along. I
- 13:59Speaker 1: think that's so again, and it's the optics of all
- 14:01Speaker 1: of it, but also just from a logistical standpoint, all
- 14:04Speaker 1: the kind of hands in everything, even last week, right,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you know, Terry Pagoula makes that comment at the presser
- 14:10Speaker 1: of you know, Brandon didn't want key On, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 1: blah blah blah. Then Brandon Bean walks it back and
- 14:14Speaker 1: is like, no, you know, I would never turn a
- 14:16Speaker 1: pick in for someone who I didn't sign off on
- 14:18Speaker 1: and didn't think we could have success with. You know,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I just had him ranked a little differently. The personnel
- 14:22Speaker 1: department had him banked a little differently than the coaching
- 14:24Speaker 1: staff did. I would assume the coaching staff includes Joe Brady.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I'm assuming Joe Brady was a key on Coleman advocate
- 14:32Speaker 1: or did by coaching staff they just met Sean McDermott,
- 14:35Speaker 1: or they just meant wide receivers coach Adam Henry. Again,
- 14:38Speaker 1: there's all this muddiness and only the bills, you know
- 14:41Speaker 1: that the people behind closed doors, behind the curtain, only
- 14:45Speaker 1: they know what actually happened or what was the deal.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And for all we know, yes, Sean McDermott really could
- 14:51Speaker 1: have been the source point for all of these troubles.
- 14:54Speaker 1: He really could have been heavily and you know, majority
- 14:58Speaker 1: to blame for all the problems, and maybe jettisoning him
- 15:02Speaker 1: and keeping everything else kind of as is for the
- 15:04Speaker 1: most part or to a degree won't matter and things
- 15:08Speaker 1: will go higher from there. But I just think, you know,
- 15:12Speaker 1: Joe Brady's been part of the problem, and Brandon Bean's
- 15:15Speaker 1: part of the problem, and Sean McDermott's part of the problem,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and they only got rid of one of parts of
- 15:19Speaker 1: the problem and kept two of them and moved them
- 15:23Speaker 1: up more and gave them more oversight. And then some
- 15:25Speaker 1: of the verbage hasn't made sense. We're going to continue
- 15:27Speaker 1: to get into that. But we got another super chat, Arthur,
- 15:30Speaker 1: thank you very much for being here. That's pretty much
- 15:31Speaker 1: always I think if a super chat, Arthur says, bummed
- 15:35Speaker 1: we didn't hire Yudinsky, but I didn't know anything about
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yudinsky two weeks ago. At least being in the bill
- 15:40Speaker 1: should know what to expect for Brady. I think it's
- 15:42Speaker 1: a very level head to take. I think a lot
- 15:43Speaker 1: of people get swept up in the newness of things
- 15:46Speaker 1: and like new means better just because it's new, or
- 15:50Speaker 1: you know, you see a thread or a highlight or
- 15:53Speaker 1: an interview on someone and it's like, man, that guy
- 15:55Speaker 1: sounds great, I'm all on board. Similar I think it's
- 15:57Speaker 1: kind of like draft season, right you see a highlight
- 15:59Speaker 1: package some guy and you're like, I want that guy,
- 16:02Speaker 1: that guy's the best receiver, and you attach yourself to
- 16:04Speaker 1: somebody that you didn't know about two months ago, but
- 16:07Speaker 1: now you are full tilt like, yes, they have to
- 16:10Speaker 1: draft this one guy, Yes I need this one guy.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And then they don't and you're pissed off. But you
- 16:14Speaker 1: really didn't know about this guy a couple of weeks
- 16:16Speaker 1: ago or a month or so ago. And I think
- 16:19Speaker 1: this is pretty spot on from mere Arthur. So thank
- 16:22Speaker 1: you for comment to that. Thank you also some of
- 16:25Speaker 1: the pieces as well that I just didn't think added
- 16:27Speaker 1: up a little bit. Jordan Schultz tweeted out earlier today,
- 16:32Speaker 1: this directly from him on Twitter. He said, quote what
- 16:34Speaker 1: the Bills liked about Joe Brady and the main reasons
- 16:37Speaker 1: they hired him, per sources. One, the CEO portion of
- 16:41Speaker 1: the interview stood out the most. Two his vision for
- 16:44Speaker 1: how everything We're gonna come back to that CEO comment
- 16:47Speaker 1: in a minute. Two, his vision for how everything would
- 16:50Speaker 1: be structured from the head coaching seat was viewed as
- 16:53Speaker 1: a quote unquote home run. Three. He also nailed the
- 16:57Speaker 1: importance of alignment between the coaching and player personnel. For me,
- 17:04Speaker 1: again not to be negative with that, but Joe Brady,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you know, his vision for how everything would be structured
- 17:12Speaker 1: from the head coaching seat was viewed as a home
- 17:13Speaker 1: run by the Bills. And he also nailed the importance
- 17:16Speaker 1: of alignment between coaching and player personnel. I would hope.
- 17:20Speaker 1: So he's been in the building for four years, he's
- 17:23Speaker 1: been the offensive coordinator for two, and he watched at
- 17:27Speaker 1: press conference last week, so of course he's gonna hit
- 17:30Speaker 1: on those points. He had the answers to the test
- 17:32Speaker 1: before he took the test, so I would imagine he
- 17:36Speaker 1: would apply those answers to the test. I would imagine
- 17:41Speaker 1: he likely used those answers for the test, so like
- 17:46Speaker 1: them coming away and being like man, he really blew
- 17:48Speaker 1: us away with his answers well, probably because his answer
- 17:50Speaker 1: sounded like yours and it's what you wanted to hear,
- 17:53Speaker 1: not saying that's not what he actually believes, not saying
- 17:56Speaker 1: that that won't work going forward. But of course it's
- 18:00Speaker 1: that way, and of course you liked it. That just
- 18:02Speaker 1: didn't That just didn't make a lot of sense to me.
- 18:04Speaker 1: And then you add in the other piece. So that's
- 18:08Speaker 1: CEO piece, right that I mentioned in that tweet there
- 18:11Speaker 1: from Jordan Schultz. And then you go and you listen
- 18:16Speaker 1: to Ian Rappaport earlier tonight on NFL Network was talking
- 18:19Speaker 1: about why the Bills hired Joe Brady, and he said
- 18:21Speaker 1: a quote, you know, this seemed to be more of quote,
- 18:25Speaker 1: we found the CEO of our football operation. That is
- 18:30Speaker 1: what Joe Brady is, right, So if he's the CEO
- 18:33Speaker 1: of the football operation and that's what they viewed him
- 18:36Speaker 1: as the CEO was used multiple times. Reference multiple times
- 18:39Speaker 1: by multiple different reporters, likely probably coming from the same source.
- 18:42Speaker 1: But if that's the verbiage we're using to kind of
- 18:45Speaker 1: champion this hire, but then he's still calling the plays
- 18:48Speaker 1: and still running the offense. That makes it very hard
- 18:51Speaker 1: for him to be the CEO and see everything. If
- 18:53Speaker 1: he has to get into the weeds with one side
- 18:55Speaker 1: of the ball, it's a little contradictory. And that's why
- 18:59Speaker 1: I just feel like there's so much, you know, contradiction
- 19:03Speaker 1: to everything we've seen from the last week. You know,
- 19:07Speaker 1: Brandon Bean gets the credit for building a deeper, great
- 19:09Speaker 1: roster to Terry Pegoula, and you know, all the injuries
- 19:13Speaker 1: happening this year is a testament to that. But like
- 19:15Speaker 1: we're not giving Sean McDermott to the coaching staff any
- 19:17Speaker 1: credit for coaching up those practice squad guys and coaching
- 19:21Speaker 1: through all those injuries. In that adversity, you know, there's
- 19:24Speaker 1: there's just so many contradictory comments and statements that are made.
- 19:30Speaker 1: You know, Terry Bogula says it essentially, you know, he
- 19:32Speaker 1: didn't think Sean McDermott could be the one to get
- 19:34Speaker 1: him over the hump and get them, you know, past
- 19:36Speaker 1: that place proverbial playoff wall. But then he gets asked,
- 19:40Speaker 1: how do you decide you know if it's the roster
- 19:43Speaker 1: construction or the coaching that's responsible for all the shortcomings.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And he says, that's a really hard question and he
- 19:49Speaker 1: doesn't have an answer for that. But how do you
- 19:51Speaker 1: not have an answer for that? You decided it was
- 19:53Speaker 1: the coaching, So shouldn't you know and have an answer
- 19:55Speaker 1: because that you made that decision because you believed it
- 19:58Speaker 1: was the coaching, So how did you come to that decision?
- 20:01Speaker 1: It's I'm all overall, I'm just very tired of like
- 20:03Speaker 1: I feel like I'm nitpicking, but I'm not. There's just
- 20:06Speaker 1: so many contradictions that I feel like are right in
- 20:08Speaker 1: our face, and it's frustrating and annoying. And I kind
- 20:12Speaker 1: of feel bad for Brady because again, I don't think
- 20:16Speaker 1: Brady is completely terrible. I would like to think in
- 20:18Speaker 1: a positive way. He was a significant part of the
- 20:21Speaker 1: reason the offense moved in line with league trends in
- 20:25Speaker 1: current league meta to start, you know, reducing their formational
- 20:27Speaker 1: with getting bigger body types at receiver. Hey, we're gonna
- 20:30Speaker 1: run the football. We're gonna marry the run with the pass,
- 20:32Speaker 1: even though they were kind of hit or miss on
- 20:34Speaker 1: that a bunch, and also didn't use play action as
- 20:36Speaker 1: much as they should. But I would like to think
- 20:38Speaker 1: that he had a significant hand in that decision offensively,
- 20:43Speaker 1: But then again, I imagine he had a significant hand
- 20:45Speaker 1: in wanting to bring Curtis Samuel in and wanting to
- 20:47Speaker 1: bring Keyan Coleman in and signing off on all these
- 20:50Speaker 1: moves that didn't necessarily work for the offense and the team.
- 20:56Speaker 1: So is that true? But it's fine. It's okay because
- 21:00Speaker 1: he's a great CEO for you because he agrees with
- 21:03Speaker 1: what you're saying. But also it's hard to be a
- 21:06Speaker 1: CEO and he still has to run that side of
- 21:08Speaker 1: the ball, and I guess it's Sean mcdermot's fall for
- 21:10Speaker 1: everything else. And I'm not saying all this to be
- 21:13Speaker 1: completely sarcastic or be too negative. I'm just trying to
- 21:16Speaker 1: highlight there's just so much moneiness. There's so much interconnectedness.
- 21:20Speaker 1: There's so much collaboration that happens across the board on
- 21:24Speaker 1: a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis throughout these football teams.
- 21:31Speaker 1: So it's just tough and even you know, Claude says
- 21:35Speaker 1: Brady was just as hamstrung by this roster and its
- 21:37Speaker 1: lack of talent as Alan he was otherwise successful, right,
- 21:41Speaker 1: but didn't he also kind of build that offense like
- 21:46Speaker 1: he wanted to not I'm assuming being or Brady was
- 21:50Speaker 1: fine with not emphasizing the receiver position and going in
- 21:54Speaker 1: another direction. So isn't he also part of the problem,
- 21:57Speaker 1: just like he is part of the success, which he
- 21:59Speaker 1: is part of This is obviously, but again, there's so
- 22:04Speaker 1: much like Devil's Advocate you can play, and so much
- 22:06Speaker 1: like this side versus that side, and arguments that you
- 22:09Speaker 1: can make one way or another and get this is
- 22:11Speaker 1: an ultimate like time will tell, right, just how much
- 22:14Speaker 1: of the problem was Sean McDermott. Was Brady right all along?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Was being right all along? Yeahda YadA, all that kind
- 22:20Speaker 1: of stuff. It's a major Time will tell, which again
- 22:22Speaker 1: is what I find frustrating about so much of it.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I do think on the one hand, though, with Bean
- 22:27Speaker 1: staying and Brady staying, I do expect some kind of
- 22:31Speaker 1: big move this offseason. I think not the kind of
- 22:37Speaker 1: prove that it was Sean McDermott, but I do think
- 22:40Speaker 1: they're going to go out and try and make a
- 22:42Speaker 1: big splash, as big as they can make, either a
- 22:44Speaker 1: wide receiver or defensive end, and not even to the
- 22:47Speaker 1: point of like, oh, you know, it won't surprise me.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I think I think that's going to happen. I think
- 22:54Speaker 1: they're going to make a move. I think they're going
- 22:57Speaker 1: to try and a dress their biggest flaws or faults
- 22:59Speaker 1: and come out swinging this offseason as much as they can. Now,
- 23:02Speaker 1: it's not gonna be the easiest thing because they are
- 23:03Speaker 1: strict on the cap, which you're going to get into
- 23:05Speaker 1: as we go forward in this offseason, but there are
- 23:07Speaker 1: some moves they can make. Well likely. What I was
- 23:09Speaker 1: going to play tonight was kind of a end of
- 23:12Speaker 1: season move forward recap on position groupings and free agents,
- 23:17Speaker 1: to target the current depth chart, what it means, all
- 23:20Speaker 1: that kind of stuff going forward, and then this news
- 23:23Speaker 1: dropped today and kind of threw me for a loop. Yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 1: let's see, Brian, did you see the Jerry Hughes tweety
- 23:31Speaker 1: all the best? Appreciate you, Brian, thank you for being here,
- 23:32Speaker 1: thanking for the kind of words. I did see that.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I saw multiple Jerry Hughes tweets where he was essentially
- 23:36Speaker 1: saying like McDermott, not the paraphrase, but I am paraphrasing
- 23:40Speaker 1: like McDermott was the problem and if you know, if
- 23:42Speaker 1: you paid attention to thirteen seconds and kept that same guy,
- 23:44Speaker 1: you guys are an unserious franchise all that kind of stuff. Yeah,
- 23:48Speaker 1: he essentially kind of went in on McDermott. It was weird,
- 23:50Speaker 1: but a lot of time had passed. I don't know
- 23:53Speaker 1: what activated Jerry Hughes on Twitter and made him respond
- 23:57Speaker 1: so much, but yeah, he essentially kind of went in
- 24:00Speaker 1: on on Sean McDermott again, the kind of summ it
- 24:05Speaker 1: all up. I know we're gonna start getting everything from chat.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I want to make sure I get to all these
- 24:08Speaker 1: comments because there's a lot. But you know, I don't
- 24:10Speaker 1: think Joe Brady is holistically bad. I never thought he
- 24:13Speaker 1: was as great as he was made out to be.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I don't think he's as bad as he was made
- 24:16Speaker 1: out to be. But like Sean McDermott and like Brandon
- 24:19Speaker 1: bean who, I think you can say very similar things
- 24:21Speaker 1: for it, and I do, at least. I just think
- 24:25Speaker 1: they're all culpable significantly, and I think all their hands
- 24:28Speaker 1: have blood on them to significant degrees, and just getting
- 24:31Speaker 1: part of one is underwhelming to me a little bit
- 24:35Speaker 1: and just from the other candidate's perspective. Yeah, I was
- 24:38Speaker 1: never huge on grant Yedinsky. I know that started to
- 24:42Speaker 1: gain some traction. I want to clin koobiak all along.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I started talking about him in November, No November like October.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I think I also really like Nathan Schielhouse, the passing
- 24:52Speaker 1: game coordinator and guy who does all the d weekly
- 24:55Speaker 1: play drawing and diagramming for Sean McVay like Liam Cohen
- 24:58Speaker 1: used to do, like Zach Taylor used to do. I
- 25:01Speaker 1: really wanted a part of that tree. I wanted a
- 25:03Speaker 1: part in the McVay Shanahan tree. What it means to
- 25:05Speaker 1: offense is what it means to quarterbacks. I really just
- 25:10Speaker 1: think thought and I currently think Josh Allen in the
- 25:13Speaker 1: Shanahan or McVeigh system is gonna would be unreal, Like
- 25:18Speaker 1: that's those systems are so quarterback friendly, especially the Shanahan
- 25:21Speaker 1: side of things, Like it's so quarterback friendly that you
- 25:25Speaker 1: drop in a player like that. I mean, Kyle Shanahan
- 25:30Speaker 1: was going to the Super Bowl with Jimmy Garoppolo, right,
- 25:32Speaker 1: and he sacrificed so much to go up and get
- 25:35Speaker 1: Trey Lance because he believed that type of skill set. Again,
- 25:38Speaker 1: I'm not saying Trey Lance and Josh Allen are the
- 25:40Speaker 1: same type of guy, but he believed that type of
- 25:42Speaker 1: skill set would take him to the moon. He was
- 25:45Speaker 1: going to Super Bowls and NFC Championships and all that,
- 25:48Speaker 1: and he sacrificed all of it because he believed injecting
- 25:52Speaker 1: that kind of athleticism and arm talent into his offense
- 25:55Speaker 1: would take it to the moon. And Allen in in
- 25:58Speaker 1: the Shanahan system or you know, working with Clint Kubiak,
- 26:01Speaker 1: who I also really like. I watched so much Seahawks
- 26:03Speaker 1: tape this year throughout the year, offensively and defensively. I've
- 26:06Speaker 1: watched so much Rams tape. You know. I've been a
- 26:09Speaker 1: fan of a Shielhouse since I saw whatever interviews were
- 26:12Speaker 1: coming out with him, like earlier in this season. So
- 26:15Speaker 1: there were other moves I wanted and but you can
- 26:19Speaker 1: give pros and cons so those, just like you can
- 26:20Speaker 1: give pros and cons to Joe Brady. I don't think
- 26:23Speaker 1: this is a death sentence. I don't think this is
- 26:25Speaker 1: the you know, the worst, god awful thing ever. But
- 26:28Speaker 1: I am underwhelmed again just because of the interconnectedness of
- 26:31Speaker 1: the shortcomings of this team and Joe Brady's role in that,
- 26:34Speaker 1: and then some of my own individual's schematic frustrations with
- 26:36Speaker 1: this offense going throughout this entire season, even though again
- 26:41Speaker 1: they were from an advanced metrics standpoint, a lot of
- 26:44Speaker 1: ways they were a very good offense. Again, but now
- 26:47Speaker 1: you're changing. You got changes coming about, right. You know,
- 26:49Speaker 1: you've got some questions on the offensive line. You've got
- 26:51Speaker 1: questions with the offensive line coach in terms of who
- 26:53Speaker 1: it's gonna be. Does the run game suffer? Does it not?
- 26:56Speaker 1: What do you do it? Wide receiver? How do you go?
- 26:58Speaker 1: You know, who is responsible for the run game success?
- 27:00Speaker 1: You know, was a Brady?
- 27:01Speaker 2: Was it?
- 27:01Speaker 1: Cromer was it? You know, Austin Goon? Was it? Someone else?
- 27:05Speaker 1: Was the individual players? You know? Kind of making all
- 27:07Speaker 1: these cases. You changed the offensive line, You've removed and
- 27:09Speaker 1: added all these variables. Now at the same time, it's
- 27:14Speaker 1: really interesting. I don't I don't think this is the
- 27:16Speaker 1: most ideal higher for the fan base, But I don't
- 27:19Speaker 1: think it's this end of the world as it's made
- 27:21Speaker 1: out to be. But for me, again, I am underwhelmed,
- 27:25Speaker 1: but I am hopeful, but I am underwhelmed, And again
- 27:29Speaker 1: I think this is another move this offseason, you know,
- 27:32Speaker 1: these past couple of weeks. But there's just a lot
- 27:34Speaker 1: of contradiction between you know, what said versus what's actioned,
- 27:38Speaker 1: and I think that's annoying and frustrating. I hate having
- 27:42Speaker 1: to do like read between the lines or like oh,
- 27:45Speaker 1: this is what was actually going on, Like that's annoying,
- 27:47Speaker 1: Like it shouldn't be this complicated and frustrating for these pieces. Yeah,
- 27:53Speaker 1: I'm going to dive into the live comments now, which
- 27:56Speaker 1: I'm sure was spur more conversation. R J were one
- 28:00Speaker 1: of the people I thought about when this news dropped
- 28:02Speaker 1: today because of the frustrations you've laid out in the
- 28:04Speaker 1: comments here throughout the entire season. R J says, honestly,
- 28:07Speaker 1: can someone please make me feel better about this? I
- 28:09Speaker 1: thought this team's issues were at OC and GM, and
- 28:12Speaker 1: now both have promotions. It's not great unplaying. Disassembly says
- 28:17Speaker 1: today has been the most entertaining day as a Bills
- 28:19Speaker 1: fan that I've had in a while. KAA Moury, what's okay?
- 28:23Speaker 1: Mary Kay? Morriy sys The biggest question was going to
- 28:25Speaker 1: be shifts and changes in defensive philosophy. This hire is
- 28:28Speaker 1: no different don't love or hate the higher go bills.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I think that's fair. Again, I'm in a similar boat.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I don't love it, I don't hate it. I'm underwhelmed.
- 28:38Speaker 1: There were guys I would have rather gone with multitude
- 28:41Speaker 1: other guys who were also hired in other spots. You know,
- 28:47Speaker 1: I honestly, I, even though I don't love him as
- 28:51Speaker 1: head coach, I would have rather had Mike McDaniel's head
- 28:53Speaker 1: coach than Joe Brady, even though I don't really want
- 28:57Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel's a head coach, but I just value his
- 28:58Speaker 1: offensive mind so much schematically what he is. But I
- 29:01Speaker 1: would have been I wouldn't have been completely thrilled with
- 29:03Speaker 1: McDaniel's head coach, but I would have been more excited
- 29:05Speaker 1: for what have meant for the offense grammatically and for
- 29:07Speaker 1: Allen in particular. Yeah, so we'll see. School Gaming says
- 29:12Speaker 1: the issue was defense, not offense. Larry just says, straight
- 29:15Speaker 1: up what a letter, justtin Yeah, I'm interested in what
- 29:18Speaker 1: the staff hires will look like. Absolutely. Raymond says, but
- 29:22Speaker 1: how will the Pats lose with the tree's gone? Well, hope,
- 29:24Speaker 1: maybe the tree is staying up is what's keeping the
- 29:27Speaker 1: paths afloat. I should take him down immediately. Most has
- 29:30Speaker 1: great higher Kam Morris as Valentine's Day tree went uh oh,
- 29:34Speaker 1: Probably next week I'll take the little tree over there
- 29:38Speaker 1: and dress it up in red Garland and making a
- 29:41Speaker 1: Valentine's Day tree. This is very funny from Pretzels and
- 29:46Speaker 1: gas Jets says. If this was January twenty twenty five,
- 29:49Speaker 1: we'd all be saying this was the best hire every Yeah,
- 29:51Speaker 1: it's funny. Funny how he well, you know, just a
- 29:56Speaker 1: change any year makes. I mentioned it earlier, like going
- 29:59Speaker 1: into this season. If you told everybody before this season started, Hey,
- 30:02Speaker 1: at the end of the season, Sean mcdermot's canna be
- 30:04Speaker 1: fired and Joe Brady will be promoted a head coach.
- 30:06Speaker 1: I think that would probably get like an eighty percent
- 30:09Speaker 1: approval rating easily, And now I feel like it's fifty
- 30:12Speaker 1: to fifty at best, but maybe lower. I feel like
- 30:14Speaker 1: it might be forty percent. I could be wrong. Bob says,
- 30:19Speaker 1: how is Brady going to call plays, get in game
- 30:21Speaker 1: decisions right at critical moments and not get school going
- 30:24Speaker 1: up against grizzled defensive coordinators. That's a fair question. That's
- 30:27Speaker 1: why his staff is going to be super important. You know.
- 30:29Speaker 1: That's why it's hard to be a head coach who
- 30:31Speaker 1: runs an entire side of the ball, right, Like, you
- 30:34Speaker 1: need that at minimum, You need the other side of
- 30:36Speaker 1: the ball to be run completely by someone else who
- 30:39Speaker 1: is very good at doing that, right, you know, like
- 30:42Speaker 1: Mike Mike McDonald runs the defense for the Seahawks, Klint
- 30:45Speaker 1: Kubiak runs the offense, right, Kyle Shanahan runs the offense.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He's had Robert Sala run the defense. He's at Steve
- 30:52Speaker 1: Wilkes run the defense. He's had Demiko Ryans run the defense, right, Like,
- 30:55Speaker 1: you need somebody who can run that entire other side
- 30:58Speaker 1: at a minimum. And then we talked about the other
- 31:00Speaker 1: pieces too, right, like who's Brady's OC gonna be? Role?
- 31:02Speaker 1: Does he play offensive line coach? All that kind of stuff.
- 31:07Speaker 1: RJ bringing more heat, saying, I'm genuinely curious how the
- 31:09Speaker 1: organization sells this to the fans. It took them ten
- 31:12Speaker 1: days to completely alien eight ninety percent of the fans.
- 31:15Speaker 1: From Scapegoding McDermott to that pressor to Joe Brady, Brian Sam,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I was watching Eric and you at the gym. Appreciate you.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I don't think it was intended, but it left me
- 31:24Speaker 1: quite optimistic. And then he mentions Jim Leonard, we will
- 31:26Speaker 1: be talking about that a little bit. Just a Tippica
- 31:30Speaker 1: News says we all need to take a deep breath
- 31:31Speaker 1: and remind ourselves we are not a mile away from
- 31:33Speaker 1: the ultimate goal. Let the other pieces fall into place.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Level hid in the well side m h b b b
- 31:44Speaker 1: B b are j saying, I'm so jealous of many
- 31:49Speaker 1: other teams, young smart coaches coming here. I would love
- 31:54Speaker 1: to be a fly on the wall in the McDermott house.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Good comment from Bob. Question, I should say what kind
- 31:59Speaker 1: of or OC will Brady get if he's the one
- 32:01Speaker 1: designing and calling plays. I think this is a good question.
- 32:03Speaker 1: I wonder that as well. I don't know if he's
- 32:05Speaker 1: gonna look for Is he gonna look for someone to
- 32:08Speaker 1: kind of be a right hand for him and running
- 32:11Speaker 1: the team. Is he going to look for someone who
- 32:13Speaker 1: can help kind of take stuff off his plate for
- 32:15Speaker 1: the offense pregame or in game. I think it's interesting,
- 32:22Speaker 1: Larry saying I was really hoping we get Yadinsky or Koupiak.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I really like Yadinsky story. He says, that's fair m
- 32:30Speaker 1: Doug saying something that has felt so weird is that
- 32:32Speaker 1: we keep getting slapped in the face with the fact
- 32:34Speaker 1: that the offense has been top five the last two years,
- 32:37Speaker 1: but this year everything in our offense has been difficult.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I think that's a fair point. I also think it's it.
- 32:43Speaker 1: It's there's context to a lot of things, right, like points,
- 32:46Speaker 1: score yards, even some of the advanced metrics, right Like,
- 32:49Speaker 1: you can look at EPA per play, but then what's
- 32:51Speaker 1: the success rate on things? You know? How do little
- 32:54Speaker 1: conversions on third down and fourth down? You know, change
- 32:57Speaker 1: the change the metrics and skew things a bit, possibly
- 33:00Speaker 1: or negatively. And that was a big factor for me,
- 33:03Speaker 1: right Like, I do think the offense was good, and
- 33:05Speaker 1: it's hard to not look at them, you know, EPA
- 33:07Speaker 1: for play and DV away and success rate in all
- 33:09Speaker 1: these different little pieces that speak well to them at
- 33:11Speaker 1: times in certain areas. But it did feel like there
- 33:14Speaker 1: was a bit of a slog for this offense. And
- 33:17Speaker 1: I even felt that a little bit in twenty twenty four.
- 33:19Speaker 1: And I know Allen won the MVP, but I talked
- 33:20Speaker 1: about it going into the offseason last year that it
- 33:23Speaker 1: felt like the instructure pass game wasn't great, and then
- 33:28Speaker 1: we saw it again this year, and it wasn't just
- 33:29Speaker 1: purely because of the weapons. It was some of the
- 33:31Speaker 1: schematics of it and some of Allen's decision making as well.
- 33:34Speaker 1: And I don't know how much that changes. Granted, I
- 33:36Speaker 1: think they're going to try and you know, upgrade and
- 33:38Speaker 1: tweak the wide receiver position, but there's just the other things,
- 33:41Speaker 1: you know, not going away from five man protections against
- 33:44Speaker 1: the Texans when your off offensive line is getting eaten
- 33:48Speaker 1: and Spencer Brown's playing with one arm, plus you're leaving
- 33:50Speaker 1: him in there. Like but was that a chromer call
- 33:52Speaker 1: or not? Like again, a lot of interconnectedness, a lot
- 33:55Speaker 1: of moneiness, Curtis saying the Bronco was fired, so they're
- 34:00Speaker 1: probably promoting Web. Yeah, they fired Joe Lombardi earlier today.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I don't know if that's to keep Davis Web or not,
- 34:05Speaker 1: but that would be fair, It would be fair. Charles
- 34:10Speaker 1: saying I was bummed like most about the Brady hire
- 34:13Speaker 1: at first, but I'm more open minded keep the culture,
- 34:15Speaker 1: but maybe a looser team. I do think there's something
- 34:17Speaker 1: to be said for continuity from an offensive identity perspective.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Or for a comfortability with Josh Allen perspective, or maybe
- 34:23Speaker 1: even if for a team I'm a team culture perspective.
- 34:26Speaker 1: I do think that's fair. RJ says the offense has
- 34:30Speaker 1: been extremely difficult the past two and a half years
- 34:32Speaker 1: since Brady took over. I wouldn't say extremely I do
- 34:34Speaker 1: think Dave had gotten stuck in neutral, stuck in the
- 34:35Speaker 1: mudd at times, but I wouldn't say extremely difficult. And
- 34:38Speaker 1: then RJ also says the longer he's been here, the
- 34:40Speaker 1: more difficult it has been. HM. I agree somewhat, but
- 34:46Speaker 1: I don't completely agree Swin saying, just think if Cooks
- 34:49Speaker 1: could catch the ball, if that gets rule to catch,
- 34:53Speaker 1: or if he catches it cleanly, or if Allen doesn't
- 34:55Speaker 1: skip that past the Khalis Shakir on third down and
- 34:57Speaker 1: they go up I don't know, thirty at minimum thirty
- 35:00Speaker 1: to twenty three instead of twenty seven to twenty three,
- 35:03Speaker 1: Or if Cole Bishop doesn't bite on the flare route
- 35:05Speaker 1: from the running back on third and eleven when they're
- 35:07Speaker 1: playing inverted Tampa two and allow Court and Sutton to
- 35:09Speaker 1: get behind him on the dig for a conversion. Yeah,
- 35:14Speaker 1: crazy Bob says, how can bean say the talent is
- 35:17Speaker 1: there and then hire the guy who is underwhelming in
- 35:20Speaker 1: use and design with them another contradiction. Fairpoint, Daniella saying,
- 35:26Speaker 1: confusing as to why they would throw him under the
- 35:28Speaker 1: bus with a Coleman pick but then promote him. Question
- 35:30Speaker 1: mark makes me nervous for the wide receiver position, Dougs
- 35:38Speaker 1: is basically what we're hearing is my twenty to eighteen
- 35:40Speaker 1: Ford Fusion wasn't working for me, so I went and
- 35:42Speaker 1: got twenty twenty one forth Fusion. I like that comment
- 35:47Speaker 1: here from mjsaying my optimism for the movee is growing.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Bill says, still so confusing. Okay, Oh, Chad saying I
- 36:01Speaker 1: think being didn't use the twenty twenty six first for
- 36:03Speaker 1: Waddle because he knew they would need it if they
- 36:05Speaker 1: moved on from McDermott in the next regime. Ooh little
- 36:09Speaker 1: foresight there. Maybe maybe maybe maybe m just as the
- 36:17Speaker 1: root word of fans fanatic it out of here with
- 36:19Speaker 1: your logic. That's fair. Patrick's saying a lot of people
- 36:23Speaker 1: said this. Chris Sims and Ryan Fitzpatrick support the Brady hiring,
- 36:25Speaker 1: so I'm less sad at least. Loll Yeah. Again, it
- 36:29Speaker 1: depends on who you listen to. You know, certain people
- 36:32Speaker 1: are gonna like it, certain people aren't. You know, if
- 36:34Speaker 1: you trust the masses over individuals, if you trust certain
- 36:37Speaker 1: individuals over others, you know, again it's it's gonna be time,
- 36:40Speaker 1: we'll tell. I don't think anybody can be right right
- 36:42Speaker 1: now in terms of forecasting or you know, diagnosing what
- 36:46Speaker 1: the bills are going to be. But I think it's
- 36:48Speaker 1: fair to be on either side. I think it's completely
- 36:50Speaker 1: fair to be stoked or fine or happy with this.
- 36:53Speaker 1: I think it's fine to be pissed and want to
- 36:56Speaker 1: jettison this team into the sun. Understood. Oh so when
- 37:02Speaker 1: saying I'm not concerned with the optics and how McDermott
- 37:04Speaker 1: was fired, I'd rather go backwards than continue to lose
- 37:06Speaker 1: in heart wrenching uh than to lose in heart wrenching
- 37:09Speaker 1: matters in the playoffs with McDermott, I think that's fair.
- 37:12Speaker 1: The optics for me, is more of again how interconnected
- 37:16Speaker 1: everything was and then how it all went down and
- 37:19Speaker 1: the reasoning behind it and the contradictions with it. Right
- 37:22Speaker 1: like Terry saying you know it's a and then they're like, okay,
- 37:25Speaker 1: how do you decide on A, and he's like, ooh,
- 37:27Speaker 1: that's a good that's a hard question. I don't know
- 37:29Speaker 1: how to answer that, like what and then some of
- 37:31Speaker 1: the thing being some of the things that Bean said
- 37:33Speaker 1: versus what Pegoula said, and then now keeping Joe Brady.
- 37:36Speaker 1: I just think it's all muddy. That's the way I'm
- 37:38Speaker 1: gonna keep saying it. I think it's muddy. You know
- 37:40Speaker 1: the optics, and I agree. I you know, you know
- 37:44Speaker 1: you'd rather go backwards and continue to lose in heart
- 37:46Speaker 1: wrenching fashion or matters. I would rather have a fresh
- 37:49Speaker 1: start overall, just because I think everything is so interconnected, like,
- 37:53Speaker 1: send beans, send McDermott, send everybody, let's get a new
- 37:55Speaker 1: But again I understand, like then you're blowing everything up.
- 37:58Speaker 1: And now Pagoola is the man with this figure by
- 38:00Speaker 1: the button. Do you want him making the next hire
- 38:02Speaker 1: for GM or coach? Do we really want that? We've
- 38:05Speaker 1: seen what's happened with the Sabers. You know it's January,
- 38:09Speaker 1: the Senior Bowls coming up, the scouting combine's coming up.
- 38:11Speaker 1: You're gonna lose all your player personnel files and scouting stuff.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Do you really want to blow up the front office
- 38:16Speaker 1: YadA YadA, like there's pros and cons to all of it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I wanted a fresh start completely, Let's get all the
- 38:22Speaker 1: bad juju out as much as possible, you know, from
- 38:25Speaker 1: a roster construction and an in game management and schematic
- 38:28Speaker 1: standpoint on the field. Obviously they didn't. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 1: Doug saying Joe Brady has his problems, but he's not terrible. However,
- 38:37Speaker 1: the way this has all gone down has just stunk
- 38:40Speaker 1: to high. Hell, I still have no trust in being
- 38:42Speaker 1: to build a roster after all of this. And again,
- 38:45Speaker 1: I think that's another symptomatic piece of all of what
- 38:47Speaker 1: the shortcomings have been the past couple of years. Right,
- 38:49Speaker 1: how much is on Bean? How much is I McDermott
- 38:52Speaker 1: on the offensive side, and like, how much is on
- 38:54Speaker 1: Joe Brady versus you know what was given to him
- 38:56Speaker 1: from a roster standpoint, But how much of that did
- 38:59Speaker 1: he want and want to in? It's all interconnected. It's
- 39:02Speaker 1: all a little bit of A, a little bit of B,
- 39:04Speaker 1: a little bit of C. Yeah, oh, money and messy.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Charles says, great roster, good coaching, except Brady. I'm Jason
- 39:20Speaker 1: smashed that like button friends, Yeah, if you are able
- 39:22Speaker 1: to smash that like button. That would be greatly appreciated.
- 39:24Speaker 1: I would greatly and sincerely appreciate that likes of the
- 39:26Speaker 1: lifeblood of these streams. Mmmmmm. Josh Allen, first active quarterback
- 39:35Speaker 1: in history at Hire a head coach. Oh, I'm so
- 39:37Speaker 1: sorry I didn't get to these other super chats. I
- 39:38Speaker 1: didn't see them before I scrolled back up. Jason, thank
- 39:41Speaker 1: you again for being hearing from the super chat. Jason
- 39:42Speaker 1: has two questions. Who can pair up with Brady the
- 39:45Speaker 1: best the legit offensive coordinator. Also, we've seen the last
- 39:48Speaker 1: days of Dawson Knox. I'm gonna start from the Knox
- 39:50Speaker 1: piece and go backward. I guess I think Dawson Knox's
- 39:55Speaker 1: skill set and role is important on this team. Dalton
- 39:59Speaker 1: can Cad cannot and should not be a regular inline
- 40:04Speaker 1: blocker like Dawson Knox is, or like Jackson Hawes's and
- 40:09Speaker 1: Jackson Hawes cannot and should not be aligned, you know,
- 40:14Speaker 1: split out wide or in the slot like Dalton Kincaid
- 40:19Speaker 1: and like Dawson Knox are. Dawson Knox is almost like
- 40:23Speaker 1: the light and the dark with how he's able to
- 40:25Speaker 1: live in between Dalton Kincaid and Jackson Hawes, and I
- 40:28Speaker 1: think that skill set is important for this team unless
- 40:31Speaker 1: they load up at wide receiver and start to go
- 40:33Speaker 1: back to like a really heavy eleven personnel. You know,
- 40:37Speaker 1: Barry the run in the past. You know we're gonna
- 40:38Speaker 1: go less twelve, We're gonna go less twenty one and
- 40:40Speaker 1: twenty two. But I do think heavier personnel packages are
- 40:43Speaker 1: still gonna be a significant part of this team. Dawson
- 40:47Speaker 1: not just makes too much money. I'm fine with him
- 40:49Speaker 1: as a player. I didn't love the contract when he
- 40:51Speaker 1: got it. I like it even less now. But I
- 40:55Speaker 1: think his skill set is useful. I think his role
- 40:58Speaker 1: is useful considering he's the bridge between Jackson Hawes and
- 41:02Speaker 1: what Dalton Kincaid is. He's a little bit of Kincaid
- 41:04Speaker 1: and he's a little bit of Hawes, and that allows
- 41:07Speaker 1: him to kind of not be as much of a
- 41:09Speaker 1: tell or a vulnerability in either right. He just makes
- 41:12Speaker 1: too much money. I'm torn on whether or not he
- 41:16Speaker 1: gets cut. I hate advocating for people losing their jobs.
- 41:20Speaker 1: I would cut him because I think you can take
- 41:22Speaker 1: that cap savings and then reallocate it towards bringing someone
- 41:27Speaker 1: in for much cheaper that can do his skill set
- 41:29Speaker 1: or his role and then using the other money to
- 41:32Speaker 1: also upgrade a couple other pieces as well, or another piece.
- 41:36Speaker 1: But I don't want him gone or his skill set gone.
- 41:40Speaker 1: He just makes too much money unfortunately. I think Josh
- 41:42Speaker 1: Allen is a wrench in all of this though, because
- 41:44Speaker 1: that's his buddy. I don't know if they're gonna want
- 41:47Speaker 1: to send him packing because I think it might upset
- 41:49Speaker 1: Josh Allen. And I don't know if that's a good
- 41:51Speaker 1: thing to say or a bad thing to say, but yeah,
- 41:55Speaker 1: I think it should be because of the money he makes.
- 41:58Speaker 1: But yeah, I think it's a little money again with
- 42:00Speaker 1: Josh Allen. And then your first question, who can pair
- 42:04Speaker 1: up with Brady the best a legit offensive coordinator? Yeah,
- 42:08Speaker 1: I think you can make the case either way. It
- 42:09Speaker 1: could be somebody who's more like a passing game coordinator
- 42:13Speaker 1: run game coordinator type of dude who's great at the
- 42:16Speaker 1: pre week game planning and scouting and situational aspects. It
- 42:22Speaker 1: could be an older type of vet, you know, who's
- 42:24Speaker 1: got OC experience or maybe even head coaching experience and
- 42:27Speaker 1: knows how to run a team or run a side
- 42:28Speaker 1: of the ball and can kind of be a right
- 42:31Speaker 1: hand or I'm thinking of the dude that was like
- 42:34Speaker 1: John Snow's right hand when he was going to King's
- 42:36Speaker 1: Landing and everything like that. I forget his name, the
- 42:38Speaker 1: dude who was the smuggler. Oh, I say it to
- 42:42Speaker 1: my head all the time because I replace a word
- 42:44Speaker 1: in a song with his name. It's gonna drive me nuts.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Someone in the chat is gonna tell me, and I'll
- 42:48Speaker 1: scroll to it later. It's going to furiate me until
- 42:49Speaker 1: I get it. Yeah, do you bring in somebody who
- 42:52Speaker 1: can be like your right hand like Doude? Do you
- 42:55Speaker 1: get yourself a Tyrian lanister to go with like your
- 42:58Speaker 1: Denaris or whatever. I know that's the opposite side. Oh,
- 43:00Speaker 1: what's that guy's name? I gotta scroll to the end.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Somebody telling me. Somebody tell me what's the name of
- 43:04Speaker 1: the guy who is John Snow's right hand? Davos? Thank you, David, Oh,
- 43:09Speaker 1: Dovo Seaworth. Drive me insane, drive me absolutely insane. Thank
- 43:13Speaker 1: you so much. That was gonna absolutely drive me bonkers.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Thank you for that. I appreciate it. I think you
- 43:18Speaker 1: can make the case either way. I think it could
- 43:20Speaker 1: be if Brady's gonna run the offense. I would rather
- 43:24Speaker 1: be a guy who's extremely detailed the game planning piece
- 43:28Speaker 1: and kind of helping him in prep so he can
- 43:31Speaker 1: continue to run like the bigger parts of the team.
- 43:34Speaker 1: But again, if you hire the right DC, he can
- 43:36Speaker 1: be in the weeds a little bit. And I don't
- 43:37Speaker 1: think that's his bad. But you got to have somebody
- 43:40Speaker 1: too that has the you know, a game day pulse,
- 43:42Speaker 1: a touch on the reins, because if he's got to
- 43:44Speaker 1: get involved in a challenge or a decision or something
- 43:47Speaker 1: like that, like you need somebody to still kind of
- 43:48Speaker 1: keep things from getting off the rails a little bit.
- 43:50Speaker 1: I think you can make the case either way. I'm
- 43:52Speaker 1: fifty five forty five towards like a schematic guy who
- 43:55Speaker 1: can help him with prep, but I could also be
- 43:57Speaker 1: sweet first and fifteenth too, says everyone getting promotions says
- 44:03Speaker 1: a lot about McDermott in theory. Yeah, it says that
- 44:05Speaker 1: the organization thought he was the problem and everything else
- 44:08Speaker 1: was kind of fine. Dak Dad nineteen eighty two says
- 44:12Speaker 1: he's using a baseball reference in the NFL a red flag.
- 44:14Speaker 1: I don't think so. I use a lot of nonsports
- 44:16Speaker 1: references for football. I use baseball references, basketball references, hockey references,
- 44:20Speaker 1: soccer references. I hope not. I hope it's I hope
- 44:24Speaker 1: it's not a red flag. We'll see boom bum bum
- 44:29Speaker 1: bum what else? Yep, as Nick says, but he's still
- 44:32Speaker 1: calling plays. Pretty conflicting reports, RJ saying, if he's the CEO,
- 44:36Speaker 1: then he shouldn't be calling the offense, but he is
- 44:38Speaker 1: calling the offense. Very fair, very fair man, RJ. I'm
- 44:42Speaker 1: just looking at your comments and you were just on
- 44:44Speaker 1: a downward spiral, which isn't funny, but uh fair. Swin
- 44:49Speaker 1: says people in Buffalo have a hard time with change
- 44:51Speaker 1: and are way too worried about this. I'm really optimistic
- 44:53Speaker 1: about this and excited for the future. I don't think
- 44:55Speaker 1: it's necessarily a people in Buffalo have a hard time
- 44:56Speaker 1: with change. I think it's just how everything has come
- 45:00Speaker 1: about and what's still staying and where the problems of
- 45:04Speaker 1: this team are can be put significantly on the people
- 45:09Speaker 1: that are staying, but they're still here, so it's just questioning,
- 45:12Speaker 1: you know, kind of what people are going for and
- 45:13Speaker 1: then your file there. People are way too worried about
- 45:15Speaker 1: the semantics. I do think that's fair I do think
- 45:17Speaker 1: a lot of people worry about the semantics or the optics,
- 45:19Speaker 1: but I think the source point of the frustrations are
- 45:23Speaker 1: a lot of people had questions about Brady and Bean
- 45:27Speaker 1: and McDermott, and only one of those are gone. And
- 45:30Speaker 1: then the way it went about, I think kind of
- 45:31Speaker 1: made people even more frustrated. But I think that's a
- 45:34Speaker 1: fair point. Joe saying, Hey, Anthony, huge fan of the show,
- 45:37Speaker 1: just had a question, can you tell me when the
- 45:38Speaker 1: pain will end? Well? I said, I uh, I can't.
- 45:43Speaker 1: I can't tell you think Bob' says Anthony, You're not
- 45:46Speaker 1: being sarcastic. The contradictions and their statements versus actions are
- 45:49Speaker 1: in full view. I think that's fair. Oh Bill saying
- 45:53Speaker 1: the CEO is not a leader of men, it's a
- 45:55Speaker 1: corporate slot. Multiple people have made that reference in the chat,
- 45:57Speaker 1: kind of being like a slave, a slave to the
- 45:59Speaker 1: shareholders and things like that and all those kind of deals. Yes,
- 46:05Speaker 1: Swin McDermott was definitely a problem, but I think there
- 46:08Speaker 1: were other problems as well. Roster construction contracts that were
- 46:11Speaker 1: handed out in terms of extensions, and guys that were signed,
- 46:15Speaker 1: draft picks that were made. But again how much of
- 46:18Speaker 1: that is, Like who pushed for those picks? You know?
- 46:20Speaker 1: Was a defensive coordinator? Was it the offensive coordinator? Was
- 46:23Speaker 1: a Sean McDermott, Was it a position coach? Was a
- 46:25Speaker 1: Brandon Bean? Was it a scout? Was it Terry Pegoula? Like,
- 46:28Speaker 1: I don't know any according to who I figured who
- 46:30Speaker 1: said the other day, I think Tyler Dunn said, like
- 46:33Speaker 1: Terry Pegoula said, like Sean Patrick Mahomes was amazing, and
- 46:36Speaker 1: he knew Mahomes would be great, but he didn't want
- 46:38Speaker 1: to put his neck out on the line and tell
- 46:39Speaker 1: anybody would do at that time. I think that's I'm
- 46:41Speaker 1: not even gonna get to that. But yeah, I don't
- 46:43Speaker 1: know you could. There's so much moneyiness at this point. Yeah,
- 46:46Speaker 1: But like I said, McDermott was part of the problem
- 46:48Speaker 1: one thousand percent. But I also think Bean was part
- 46:50Speaker 1: of the problem. I think Brady was part of the problem.
- 46:52Speaker 1: I think Babbage was part of the problem. I think
- 46:54Speaker 1: there's a ton of people that are part of the problem,
- 46:56Speaker 1: and a good chunk of those ton of people are
- 46:58Speaker 1: still in the building. Car El says Max Crosby. I
- 47:08Speaker 1: would love that. I would love that. I would love that,
- 47:11Speaker 1: Joe says, Okay, being serious, now, I do think the
- 47:13Speaker 1: optics of getting a good wide receiver but also one
- 47:16Speaker 1: that has legitimate impact and gravity could be the literal
- 47:18Speaker 1: difference for their offense and the team outlook. I don't
- 47:22Speaker 1: necessarily disagree. If you get a game change and defensive
- 47:25Speaker 1: end and some kind of addition at wide receiver at
- 47:27Speaker 1: the top end of the depth chart, I think that
- 47:30Speaker 1: would be sweet. Everybody stays healthy. It's that everybody eats,
- 47:34Speaker 1: everybody stays healthy. That's the new Bill's mantra. I like that.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I like that. I like that. I like that. Frank says,
- 47:42Speaker 1: come on, fellas, you know you want to talk about
- 47:44Speaker 1: the hypopothetical Jim Leonard scheme fence. I absolutely do. I'm
- 47:47Speaker 1: waiting to get into that, but I just want to
- 47:49Speaker 1: get through more of the comments because I know there's
- 47:50Speaker 1: so many people who are here and commented, Yeah, and
- 47:54Speaker 1: Kay Morris is the guy with the least blood in
- 47:55Speaker 1: his hands. Chris Taber has gone sad face one thousand percent.
- 47:58Speaker 1: I wanted Tabor to state frustrating, frustrating, frustrating, frustrating, James says,
- 48:06Speaker 1: is Babbage still the DC as of now? I believe so,
- 48:12Speaker 1: Swinn says, Allen is lebron who will carry this team
- 48:15Speaker 1: to wins. Don't worry about it. I don't necessarily disagree,
- 48:19Speaker 1: but I I just can't never get behind like they
- 48:21Speaker 1: have the I can't never get behind like fully the
- 48:23Speaker 1: mantra of like, oh they have Josh Allen, they'll be fine.
- 48:26Speaker 1: They've had Josh Allen this whole time, and they haven't
- 48:28Speaker 1: got over the hump. Like, not one person can do it,
- 48:31Speaker 1: like you need a supporting cast in some way, shape
- 48:33Speaker 1: or form off the field. On the field, you know,
- 48:38Speaker 1: offensive side, defensive side, like you even with Mahomes, Like
- 48:42Speaker 1: all the runs that Mahomes made to the Super Bowl
- 48:44Speaker 1: and won, right, how many of those runs were aided
- 48:47Speaker 1: by Chris Jones plays? How many game clinching plays did
- 48:50Speaker 1: Trent McDuffie make on the defensive side of the ball,
- 48:52Speaker 1: or Jordan Reid or Nick Bolton making big plays when
- 48:55Speaker 1: they needed him, Like let alone with Spags is calling
- 48:58Speaker 1: and Andy Reid is calling and Juju Smith shoots or
- 49:01Speaker 1: steps up and makes a play, and also Mahomes and
- 49:03Speaker 1: Travis Kelce, like I think Alan is the type of
- 49:06Speaker 1: player that again can get you a bunch of wins.
- 49:08Speaker 1: But there's a big difference between having a guy that
- 49:10Speaker 1: can get you wins and then having the right team
- 49:12Speaker 1: plus the guy that gets you to a super Bowl.
- 49:14Speaker 1: So many things have to align to get a super
- 49:17Speaker 1: Bowl for a team, and I think that's hard to
- 49:20Speaker 1: put on anyone's shoulders. Not to mention too, Alan has shown.
- 49:23Speaker 1: For as good as he's been in the playoffs, Alan
- 49:25Speaker 1: has shown that he can still self destruct and make
- 49:28Speaker 1: poor decisions and turn the ball over and be part
- 49:30Speaker 1: of the problem. Even though he's also a big part
- 49:32Speaker 1: of the solution. He shows he can be a part
- 49:34Speaker 1: of the problem too, So I don't think putting it
- 49:37Speaker 1: all onto his shoulders is fair to him. And I
- 49:39Speaker 1: also don't think it's the smart thing because to do
- 49:41Speaker 1: all the time, because it shows he's shown the a
- 49:46Speaker 1: propensity to kind of still be a little wonky at times.
- 49:49Speaker 1: I do think he's a great obviously starting point, and
- 49:51Speaker 1: that's the position want franchise quarterback and all that kind
- 49:54Speaker 1: of stuff. But I just think the blanket statements of
- 49:57Speaker 1: like Alan is this, or like a they have Josh Allen,
- 49:59Speaker 1: They'll be fine, don't worry about it. Like I see
- 50:01Speaker 1: this from a ton of people on I understand the
- 50:03Speaker 1: notion of it. I just think it's so much more
- 50:05Speaker 1: complicated than that, and I think it takes so much
- 50:07Speaker 1: more than that. Mmmmmmmm. Arthur says, this feels like the
- 50:16Speaker 1: safest choice for the offense avoids some disaster snares where
- 50:18Speaker 1: the OC doesn't mess with Josh, but we don't get
- 50:20Speaker 1: someone who challenges Josh and makes the offensive stop unstoppable.
- 50:26Speaker 1: And Jay says, who is our offensive line coach? Target
- 50:28Speaker 1: can't suggest building a time machine to kidnap young Aaron Chromer.
- 50:31Speaker 1: That's cheating. Someone else said that to me. I think
- 50:33Speaker 1: on Twitter or Blue Sky, I don't remember which. Like
- 50:34Speaker 1: it's simple, Oh no, that was you. I'm Jay. I think,
- 50:37Speaker 1: build a time machine, get young Aaron Kromer and do this. Yeah,
- 50:40Speaker 1: that was super funny. I like that. I like that.
- 50:42Speaker 1: I like that. Bill says, get Justin Jefferson and Max
- 50:45Speaker 1: Crosby and I will like the hire. That's fair, fair
- 50:48Speaker 1: and fair, fair fair. Yeah. Or Ja says the double
- 50:50Speaker 1: trees might be helping the path. Right now, I need
- 50:52Speaker 1: to take both of the trees down. I guess I'm sorry.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Uh bye bye bu Okay, I'm making my way through comments,
- 50:58Speaker 1: Mister Trouss's Brady is definitely yes, yes, yes, bomb bomb
- 51:04Speaker 1: bum bomb bom uh yeah. The Ford fusion quote is
- 51:15Speaker 1: perfect seven one six math is a great comment. A
- 51:18Speaker 1: Kubiak's a Kubiak, but Joe Brady could be anything. He
- 51:20Speaker 1: could even be a Kubiak. Well done, nice family guy reference.
- 51:24Speaker 1: I love that A boat's a boat, but the mystery
- 51:26Speaker 1: box could be anything. He could even be a boat.
- 51:28Speaker 1: You know how much we want in one of those,
- 51:29Speaker 1: So why don't we take the boat? We'll take the box.
- 51:32Speaker 1: I love that, Ryan, you know me too well with
- 51:35Speaker 1: the sarcasm here saying ants tore up. We didn't go
- 51:37Speaker 1: with Gruden as head coach? Yeah, I would, I man,
- 51:41Speaker 1: if they would have hired John Gruten's head coach, I'm
- 51:45Speaker 1: not even I'm not gonna yeah, I would have been furious.
- 51:48Speaker 1: You know me. Well well done, Well done, Joseph. I'll
- 51:53Speaker 1: forgive you. If Joe Brady if the Bills opened the
- 51:56Speaker 1: the season with five play action passes in a row, Oh, Joey.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Next year's schedule looks to be difficult. What would you
- 52:04Speaker 1: consider a good start record wise with this new regime?
- 52:06Speaker 1: Oh my god, there's so many variables and so hard
- 52:09Speaker 1: to answer that question right now. I gotta see who
- 52:12Speaker 1: the DC is and what they do in free agency
- 52:13Speaker 1: in the draft as of right now. Oh, let me
- 52:17Speaker 1: hold on, let me just let me google the Bills
- 52:22Speaker 1: twenty twenty six schedule. I know it's tough, but that's
- 52:27Speaker 1: all I remember. Okay, they got the Dolphins, the Pats,
- 52:31Speaker 1: the Jets, the Chiefs, the Chargers, the Bears, the Lions,
- 52:35Speaker 1: the Ravens. That's home and then away. Dolphins, Pats, Jets, Broncoss, Packers, Raiders, Vikings, Texans, Rams.
- 52:46Speaker 1: That schedule sucks right now. I oh, I don't want
- 52:51Speaker 1: to play this game, so I think everyone's gonna be
- 52:52Speaker 1: mad at me right now. I would say, all right, Dolphins,
- 52:58Speaker 1: you should sweep the Dolphins. That's two. You should beat
- 53:02Speaker 1: the Pats at least once. That's three. You should beat
- 53:05Speaker 1: the Jets both times. That's five. Chiefs depends on when
- 53:10Speaker 1: they play them and if Mahomes is back, but they've
- 53:11Speaker 1: shown the capacity to beat the Chiefs, so that's way.
- 53:14Speaker 1: So two, three, five. That could be six. They can
- 53:18Speaker 1: beat the Chargers that's seven. They can beat the Bears
- 53:20Speaker 1: that's eight. Lions will be tough, but they can win
- 53:23Speaker 1: that game. Anything that I think is too tough, I'll
- 53:24Speaker 1: kind of keep it minimum. Lions will be tough. That
- 53:26Speaker 1: could be eight, but they can win that game. Bears, honestly,
- 53:30Speaker 1: let me be backtrack. Bears, they can win that game.
- 53:32Speaker 1: That'll be tough. Ravens will see what they are, but
- 53:34Speaker 1: that game is gonna be tough because they're gonna be healthy.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Broncos they can beat Packers, they can beat Raiders. They
- 53:39Speaker 1: should beat that's nine, Vikings, they should beat that's ten.
- 53:43Speaker 1: I think ten wins is a fair base line over
- 53:45Speaker 1: under maybe nine to play Devil's advocate and be safe.
- 53:50Speaker 1: I think nine just spit ball off the top of
- 53:51Speaker 1: my head. But again, we got a lot of these
- 53:53Speaker 1: teams are gonna change on both sides, right, and we
- 53:55Speaker 1: got to see where they're at. Our sis is going
- 54:06Speaker 1: back to the tight end conversation. Hey, you don't think
- 54:07Speaker 1: Jackson Hawes can play that role? And I think Jackson
- 54:11Speaker 1: Hawes is more athletic than he gets credit for, and
- 54:14Speaker 1: he can do some more things in the past game
- 54:15Speaker 1: that he gets credit for. I don't think he's as
- 54:17Speaker 1: athletic as Knox and can be what Knox is as
- 54:21Speaker 1: a pass catcher. I don't think he's completely devoid of
- 54:25Speaker 1: being a pass catcher. I just think he's more limited
- 54:28Speaker 1: to like the underneath and the very short intermediate. Like
- 54:32Speaker 1: he's not that guy that you're sending on a corner
- 54:34Speaker 1: route or a sail route into the intermediate, you know,
- 54:37Speaker 1: ten to fifteen yards down the field. He's not that
- 54:39Speaker 1: guy where you're gonna run like a half boot or
- 54:41Speaker 1: a roll and fake the corner and then have him
- 54:43Speaker 1: been back across the field to the post or on
- 54:45Speaker 1: a crosser. I would love him to be. I just
- 54:49Speaker 1: don't think he's that. I think he's I think he's
- 54:51Speaker 1: a perfect tight end three or a very good tight
- 54:55Speaker 1: end two if your tight end one is an overall
- 54:59Speaker 1: like guy who's just legit as a pass catcher and
- 55:02Speaker 1: a blocker, Like if they if he was the tight
- 55:04Speaker 1: end two to George Kittle or McBride or even Bowers,
- 55:12Speaker 1: who's who can block a little bit like paring him
- 55:14Speaker 1: with a true true one who can do both. It's
- 55:17Speaker 1: just that like Contain's limited as a one because he's
- 55:21Speaker 1: more of a wide receiver than he is a tight end.
- 55:24Speaker 1: But I do think JACKSONA Haws can do more as
- 55:26Speaker 1: a pass catcher. I just don't think it's to the
- 55:27Speaker 1: level of Dawson Knox because he doesn't have that athleticism
- 55:30Speaker 1: that Knox has, all this comic cut knocks and drafts
- 55:33Speaker 1: a Deek. I would love for them to draft Kenyon
- 55:36Speaker 1: Side from Oregon. Problem is you're gonna have to use
- 55:38Speaker 1: a first round pick to do it, I think, and
- 55:41Speaker 1: I think they're gonna have bigger fish to fry in
- 55:45Speaker 1: the first round there. But I don't think this is crazy,
- 55:48Speaker 1: and I have thought of it. I just haven't said
- 55:50Speaker 1: it out loud because I don't want everybody to yell
- 55:51Speaker 1: at me. M hmmmmmm. Rock Pile Reports is hiring Joe
- 55:58Speaker 1: Brady's like Virtual ConA WCWS, the same thing, just under
- 56:01Speaker 1: a different name. Raymond says, if you questioned Brady's past game,
- 56:08Speaker 1: wouldn't you want a pass game coordinator? Yeah, I think
- 56:12Speaker 1: that's fair. I just again, for me, I don't know
- 56:17Speaker 1: how much of him being is the being hamstrung by
- 56:19Speaker 1: the receiver pieces, but I think the I think I
- 56:26Speaker 1: think the Bills offense can stay the course with what
- 56:28Speaker 1: they've done. I just think they need some tweaks. I
- 56:32Speaker 1: don't necessarily question Brady's pass game as a whole. I
- 56:35Speaker 1: question like the D structure and known passing down in
- 56:37Speaker 1: distance and situation aspect. But if you can just add
- 56:41Speaker 1: a better couple body types at the top of the
- 56:43Speaker 1: depth chart that have verticality or somebody that can win
- 56:45Speaker 1: one on one, I start to feel a lot better.
- 56:49Speaker 1: And also, again, it depends on that pass game coordinator,
- 56:51Speaker 1: right If it's somebody from a spread type of system,
- 56:54Speaker 1: I don't know if that's necessarily gonna work is here here.
- 56:57Speaker 1: It depends on who the past game coordinator is. If
- 56:59Speaker 1: that past game coordinator was Nathan Schielhouse, yeah, given to
- 57:02Speaker 1: me right now, given to me right now. That's my
- 57:04Speaker 1: dream offensive coordinator would be Nathan Schielhouse. I just don't
- 57:08Speaker 1: know if he's gonna leave the Rams to come to Buffalo.
- 57:11Speaker 1: I did think it was interesting that the Bills interviewed
- 57:13Speaker 1: him last night. That got me really hopeful. I really,
- 57:15Speaker 1: really really love Nathan Shieldhouse if he man, if he
- 57:19Speaker 1: if he were to come here as DOC, that would
- 57:21Speaker 1: be great Rams pass game coordinator offensive coordinator Iowa State
- 57:24Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three. I think he'd be a good fit.
- 57:26Speaker 1: I love what he does. So yeah, I understan where
- 57:28Speaker 1: you're getting it, and I don't think you're wrong for me.
- 57:30Speaker 1: It just depends on what kind of pass game they
- 57:32Speaker 1: are coming from. Sorry, I kind of fleshed my thoughts
- 57:35Speaker 1: out there in real time. Swinn says, what would you
- 57:37Speaker 1: trade for Justin Jefferson? Oh, sheesh, I don't a lot.
- 57:42Speaker 1: I don't know. I think that asking price would be
- 57:45Speaker 1: too crazy. I think that's the type of deal we're
- 57:47Speaker 1: giving up like two first and two seconds or you know,
- 57:52Speaker 1: two firsts, a second, and a third from different drafts,
- 57:56Speaker 1: and they need somebody like that. But also, like this,
- 58:00Speaker 1: I hate having this conversation because it comes back to
- 58:02Speaker 1: the moves that like have it panned out, Like they
- 58:05Speaker 1: need their draft picks, they need that draft capital. But
- 58:07Speaker 1: also like the draft capital are still just like dart
- 58:10Speaker 1: throws and swings at the plate that could be awesome
- 58:12Speaker 1: or could be nothing. Again, that's go back to the
- 58:14Speaker 1: Peter Griffin joke, like Justin Jefferson is Justin Jefferson, but
- 58:17Speaker 1: a draft pick could be anything. It could even be
- 58:19Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson. It's like, so why don't you take Justin Jefferson.
- 58:21Speaker 1: We'll take the draft picks. I would trade a lot
- 58:23Speaker 1: for Justin Jefferson. I I'm thinking of something in my
- 58:29Speaker 1: head and I'm gonna say it aloud. I think I
- 58:32Speaker 1: would trade I don't want to say. I don't know
- 58:37Speaker 1: how to verbalize this. I don't want to say I'd
- 58:39Speaker 1: trade more for Max Crosby. I would rather do the
- 58:43Speaker 1: trade for Max Crosby. I think the defense. I think
- 58:47Speaker 1: the defense needs a premier defensive end more than the
- 58:51Speaker 1: offense needs a premier wide receiver. I think you can
- 58:53Speaker 1: still get like a pretty good wide receiver two type
- 58:57Speaker 1: of deal, or get some rookie that fits with the
- 58:59Speaker 1: skill sets and eats and still have you be good
- 59:01Speaker 1: enough or kind of get you over the top again.
- 59:04Speaker 1: All jokes aside, like Brandon Cooks legitimately helped this offense.
- 59:07Speaker 1: So just get yourself a better wide receiver. It doesn't
- 59:11Speaker 1: have to be this huge stud. Obviously, Justin Jefferson would
- 59:14Speaker 1: be absolutely crazy and sick. I would trade a lot
- 59:18Speaker 1: for Justin Jefferson. It, man, it would be tough. Oh.
- 59:22Speaker 1: I hate having these conversations because all these previous roster
- 59:26Speaker 1: you know, failures come back. M hmm. Patt Ryan Saystanus
- 59:31Speaker 1: is the rifle king. Well, done. Mm hmmmmmmmmm. Joe says,
- 59:37Speaker 1: I'm okay with cutting knocks or asking him to take
- 59:39Speaker 1: a pay cut. To be honest, I don't know if
- 59:41Speaker 1: he gets a new, more favorable deal elsewhere versus buffal
- 59:44Speaker 1: where he's been in for years. Judy says, uh, did
- 59:46Speaker 1: you speak about Jim Leonard yet?
- 59:47Speaker 2: No?
- 59:47Speaker 1: I swear I'm getting it too in the next little
- 59:51Speaker 1: bit here. I'm excited to talk about it. I appreciate
- 59:52Speaker 1: you Rock and Roll Blues, thank you for saying great show.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Oh sorry, Jason, I missed the super chat and get
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: the alert. Thank you for the super Chat again. You're
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: crushing it. I really appreciate your generosity and the donations
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: and you just being here in the comments. That's awesome.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Jason says, I think the bad contract and now is
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Bernard way too injury opponent. I'll tell you this. I
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: think a big question going into this offseason is was
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Terrell Bernard's dip and play solely due to the injuries
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: or was it something more? Because even when he's healthy,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: he's not a dude who's going to axcel a getting
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: off blocks. He's not a dude who's going to excel
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: at block deconstruction, and if you're not going to protect
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: him inside with dudes who can eat blocks and mitigate
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: displacement and keep in tier offensive lineman from getting to him,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: he's going to keep getting thrown around. I think the
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: injuries were a big part of his you know, struggles.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: I do think he should move to Will and they
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: should get a middle linebacker that has a bit more
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: size and thumping and downhill ability to his game, a
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: la Devin Lloyd, like a Foye, a Lucan, someone like
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: da who has size combined with the athleticism rather than
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: just having two small, two hundred and twenty pound linebackers.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: But the injury piece is a huge, huge part of it.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: You know, he's been banged up before, we continue to
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: see it. Yeah, that's fair, that's fair. That's fair. That's fair.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Oh comment here from what thirty eight ninety six. I
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: don't think Shaheed is the quote unquote answer, but it
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: would be nice to have him even that, I would
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: take that. I would take Rashid Shaheat. In an instant,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Frank says, who's your favorite slash most realistic wide receiver option?
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: I think Shashi Shashid Shaheed is in that conversation. From
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: a free agency standpoint, I haven't fully dove into the
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: wide receiver pieces. Shaheat is up there, though. I don't
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: think he's gonna break the bank. I think he's a
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: better rout runner than he gets credit for, and I
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: think his speed in verticality absolutely opens up everything. DF
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Forever says, Aunt. To be plain, I'm doing everything I
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: can to in the way I'm positives and I just
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: can't name enough. I think that's fair. I think it's
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: fair to kind of see the roster and kind of
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: look at it and be downtrodden on it or be encouraged.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: There's a lot. There's a lot. There's a lot, there's
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: a lot. See a lot of Oh Trader for Makay Lemon.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: That's fair. I see the comments. Who do I want
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: for DC? I'm coming in, I'm coming in, I'm coming in.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about DC in a minute. Claude says, Aunt,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: John Gruden knows talent, he'd be able to tell you
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: which guys are football players. I don't know if this
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: is sarcasm or not. I yeah, he probably would. I
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: feel like a lot of coaches could do that, though,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: but I don't know if he's current enough or too outdated.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: And also him just lining up with Barstool I don't like.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: And then the way he exited the league. I don't
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: want any parts of him, although I do respect, you know,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: his football mind and his knowledge and the system he
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: comes from. But I want no parts of John Ruben
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: James saying yes, Bosa and epines A free agents absolutely, Okay,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Morey have Comisada forever and says, yeah, if we can
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: get a true number one wide receiver, I think it
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: helps everybody. Shakir ki Ka Palmer, it absolutely does. Absolutely
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: it does. Oh there's a great one from Swyn. Yeah,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Michael Wilson or Alec Pears are intriguing free agents. I
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: really wanted Alec Pierce. I just don't think it's gonna
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: be possible now. I think Alec Pierce is gonna get paid.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I think Alex Pears is gonna Alec Pierce is gonna
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: get like almost twenty million a year. I think somebody's
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: gonna pay big for that speed and that athleticism and
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: that ball tracking and the plays downfield. Someone's gonna pay
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: big for Alec Pearson. I think it takes the bills
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: out of the running. Unfortunately, Michael Wilson is what I
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: like from Arizona. I liked him at Stanford. I like
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: him now and yeah, I'm not crazy, right and we're
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: not crazy like Michael Wilson is a UFA right right right, right,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: right right, going to his contract right now? Yeah he is. No,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: he's not. He's a UFA in twenty twenty seven. But
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: I would take Michael Wilson. I thought he was a
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: free agent too. But a lot of people commenting that
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: they don't like, uh, they don't like Joe Brady, oh
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Dia feversays one first two seconds and Ed Oliver for
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson. I don't hate that Stevie saying Bernard Bean's
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: extension of Bernard was diabolic. Oh okay, sorry, Claude Claude's
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: total sarcasm aunt on that comment that I read from
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Claude earlier. I apologize. It's hard to read sarcasm through
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: things at times. This was in reference to Claude's comment
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: about Aunt John grew nose talent. I figured it was.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: That's why I said, I don't know if this is
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: sarcasm or not. I thought there was a hint of it.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I apologizes not being able to read between the lines. There.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I've average do so much reading between the lines now,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: it's tough, man, My brain is fried. M Dominic, what's up?
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Dom Don says everyone in this chat apparently watched a
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: different two and a half years of Joe Brady as
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: ocie than I did. He's been way above average, even great,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: and he's the most accomplished young oc available based on
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: who's available. Yeah. I don't necessarily disagree with that. I think,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: especially too from like accomplished perspective. Yeah, there's a lot
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: of unknowns with Yadinsky. There's he he's probably more accomplished
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: than Kobiak. I don't think that's wrong. I think that's fair.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I think it's fair. Again, I don't hate the higher
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: I'm just underwhelmed by it to a degree. But I
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: think that's fair. Mmmmmm okay, okay, okay. Gruden is the
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: best a calling spider to why Banana? I love that.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: I love that. I love that. I love that. All Right, now,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna get to something everybody's asked about and the
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: part that I wanted to get to the most. Let's
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: talk about a really exciting defensive coordinator. Rumor Jim Leonard. Now, oh,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I gotta stop because we have a super chat. Hold on,
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I need to pull up I need to pull up
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: the actual tweet for Leonard so I can read it correctly. Okay,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: now I'm gonna go to the super chat. This super
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: chat says one, thank you for being here, to thank
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: you for the donation. Super chat says, so Brady has
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: to win two or more playoff games? What happens if
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: he doesn't? Does he get fired? Because that's the floor
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: they set with this move, But he signed for five years.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: None of this makes sense. I don't think they're operating.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: I'll tell you this. I don't think they're operating on
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: if he has to win playoff games, not like if
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: this team doesn't make the playoffs. I don't think. I
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: don't think he's going anywhere. I think they're committed to
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: him long term and kind of turning things around a
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: little bit. I don't think he gets fired if he
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: doesn't win less than two playoff games. I do think
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: there's gonna be a ton of backlash, man. I just
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: I think everything's really gonna burn, Like if they don't
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: make the playoffs or if they lose ugly in the
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: wildcard round or if they start out bad, there's gonna
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: be a lot of people with torches and pitchforks and
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: wantten heads on pikes. I could see that one thousand percent.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I don't know if they're That's actually really actually a
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: fun question while we're here for those in the chat.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna start to get into Jim Leonard in a minute,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: but I want to know from those in the chat
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: with Brady as head, which again, and we have a
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: lot to go right for what's free agency gonna bring,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: what's the draft gonna bring, who's the defensive coordinator, o
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: C offensive lank coach all that? What does Joe Brady
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: have to do and or tying that have to brain
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: and beat? What do the Bills have to do this
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: year to make this a successful season? Like it does
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: it have to be? Like they have to make They
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: have to make the playoffs and that's fine. They have
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: to win two playoff games. They have to get the
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: AFC Championship, they have to get to the Super Bowl,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: they have to win the division? Like does anybody have
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: a qualifier? I think it's a really thought provoking question.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: I like this. I know you didn't mean it this way,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: but I kind of like this. Yeah, for me, I
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: just don't think I don't think they are gonna set
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: a limit for him in terms of like a bar
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: of what he has to get to for me to
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: have a successful year. I think this team needs to
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: make the playoffs again. I think they need to stay
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: on the same trajectory. Either win the division, get to
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: the playoffs, and win at least one playoff game. Like,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: that's what you have to continue to do. I think
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: that's what you have to do that. It's a really
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: thoughtable question. I like that. All right. Oh, Marty says,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: no qualifiers on this year, but they need to make
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the CHIP by year three. Okay. Richard's saying to be successful,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: they have to win the East let alone and guess
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: there's something else. Um h. Jeffrey says, win the fifth, sixth,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: seventh games of the season. Win those, we get the
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: one seed fair fair fair fair fair. Then I have
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: to win the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, and the Dodgeball Tournament.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I like that. I like that. I like that. Yes,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: season script comes definitely comes into play, says James very Fair.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Mike Check says Brandon be and I trust I bean leave,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: that's funny. Just make the playoffs? Okay, okay, fair enough,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: fair enough, fair enough? Okay, Jim Leonard, why are we
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: talking about this? Adam Schefter tweeted at two forty seven
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: this afternoon. Sources are saying Broncos defensive pass coordinator Jim
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Leonard is expected to be a leading candidate to become
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: the next defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. I tweeted
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: this immediately that this would I think. My exact words
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: were words cannot express how much I want this. I
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: could forgive a lot of things if the Buffalo Bills
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: named Jim Leonard their defensive coordinator. And then I linked
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: a tweet that I put in twenty twenty three saying
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: that I wanted Jim Leonard his defensive coordinator for the Bills.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: I quick little backstory for myself personally on why I
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: like this, but then schemmatically why I think it would
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: be good. I liked Jim Leonard when he came out
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: of Wisconsin. He was just one of those dudes I
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: attached to in college football for whatever reason. I thought
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: he was a good player. And then he ends up
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: on the Bills and he played a little bit, but
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: I wanted him to play more. It makes no sense.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: I was a little little kid at the time, but
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: I just thought he was like a good player, and
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: I liked him. And then he goes to the Ravens
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: and he's with that two thousand and eight Ravens team.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: He's making plays in the Divisional round against the Tennessee Titans.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I just thought he was sweet. And then he's playing.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: He's playing safety opposite of Ed Reid. They needed somebody
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: to stabilize that spot. Then he leaves the Ravens. He
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: goes with Rex Ryan to the Jets' He's, you know,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: one of these dudes who's like a coach on the field.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: He's making plays defensively. He's sweet. So I liked him
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: as a player and followed him for a little bit
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: throughout his career, and then you know, he's done playing,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: goes to Wisconsin to start coaching. He's their DB's coach
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: in twenty sixteen, he's their defensive coordinator and DB's coach
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: from twenty seventeen through twenty twenty two. He's the interim coach.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: At the end of the twenty twenty two season. He's
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: got a ton of buzz heading into the twenty twenty
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: three season, but I think he was ed. He There's
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: different reports on like why, but he kind of didn't
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: want to commit to anything. He ends up being a
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: senior football analyst for Illinois in twenty twenty three, and
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: then twenty twenty four he joins the Broncos becomes their
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: DB's coach and pass game coordinator, and then this past
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: year he was the assistant head coach and defensive pass
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: game coordinator. I have been a fan, raven says, Aunt,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: waxing poetic about a Rex Ryan guy. Again, just kidding,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: just kidding. Defensive coordinator Rex Ryan is awesome. Like objectively,
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: head coach Rex Ryan is something completely different. Defensive coordinator
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Rex Ryan is pretty sweet. I will sign on that
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: for forever. Like those Ravens teams when Rex Ryan was
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: a defensive coordinator, Like Rex Ryan's defense battling versus Dick
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Leboe's defense in Pittsburgh, those type of defenses blitz in
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: the formation and fire zone type deal odd front, three
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: to four attack minded Like that's my type of defense.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Like from a philosophy and like personal enjoyment standpoint, but
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: also from a schematic standpoint and what I like a
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: little bit, and we're gonna talk about that, you know,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: kind of why I think that's good and what that is.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about, you know, what Jim Leonard is
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: what I like. So pieces great comment here from Richard,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: who was already have the ball saying Jim Leonard runs
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: a three to four. Is that a problem for you
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: or do you think he's adaptable. We're gonna talk about
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: that as we go forward. Great question though, and way
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: to be spot on. So some quick notes on Jim
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Leonard and like what he was at Wisconsin and what
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: he's been exposed to at Denver under Vance Joseph so
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: hybrid fronts and coverages. He's a base three four type
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: of guy, but then it Wisconsin would also work in
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: a two four five and like a four down nickel
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: somewhat similar to what the Bills do four down under
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: and overfront. Bills are usually a four down overfront nickel
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: type defense. So he's got some of the Bills stuff
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: in his bag already. Well, I gotta stop, Mike, thank
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: you very much for being here, my checknick for the
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: super chat. The comment is, if we get Jim Leonard
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: as DC. It will be more to this team than
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: people know. He is an assistant head coach and DC
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: pass coordinator. He will bring the three four pack. I
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: signed off on this. I love it and I appreciate it.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: Well done, well said. I'm gonna keep linking into that.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: So again, hybrid fronts and coverages really good fund simulated
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: in creeper pressures. That's part of the reason I loved
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: him in Wisconsin. If you watch the show, if you
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: did a disguise coverage bingo, simulated pressure and creeper pressure
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: is probably something I say multiple times every show. That's
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: That's kind of where I'm at with that. So hybrid
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: fronts and coverage is really good and fun, schematically and
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: effective simulated in creeper pressures. Fluid personnel adaptations, streamline calls
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: that have presentation complexities to both confuse and attack offensive offenses.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: Match and rules based coverages something I love. It's just
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: hard to necessarily implement because you have to have rules.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: Everybody's got to be sound and understand everything. Oh good
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: comedy from Aaron saying I spent four to five hours
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: in Dave Randa seminars to day the bills Better get
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Leonard Yeah, So Jim Leonard has ties to Dave Randa,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: who was once the DC at Wisconsin. He is now
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: currently the head coach of Baylor, so he Leonard has
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: some ties to that. A Rando tree a little bit it.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: That's fair, that's fair. Oh and then Aaron found up
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: saying also if the Bills get Leonard, Carl Dunbar just
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: got fired today. Oh I didn't see that news would
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: be a great fit. What that there, Charles says, mug mug,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: mug front bingo. I think that's fair. So yeah, so
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: that's just some of the pieces, right. Also from the
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Denver time, what you've got with Vance Joseph in this defense, right,
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: a lot of single high stuff, a lot of man coverage,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: but also within that again a lot of match coverage pieces.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: So single high you're gonna get cover one, you're gonna
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: get cover three. Cover one is man, Cover three is zone.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: But you're gonna get match coverage stuff even within the
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: single high world. Also from the time in Denver, you
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: are going to get a bunch of what Denver has
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: done and what Vance Joseph has done, which is tied
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: to what way Phillips used to do. Bill should know
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: this five man pressure stuff, right, who's coming, who's rushing?
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: What are you doing? You're gonna get five down up front.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: You're gonna tie that in with coverage and match principles
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: on the back end. It's really cool. Stuff's schematically in
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: terms of what they are and what they've been. Also,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I want to tie this in this piece of what
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Vance Joseph's defense has been this year, in the past
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: couple of years, tying this in with Jim Leonard. So
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: this is what Vance Joseph and again Jim Leonard, DB's
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: coach and pass game coordinator on the defense side for
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: the Broncos and then assistant head coach and defensive pass
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: game coordinator this year. So heavily in terms of coverage,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: pass game coordination stuff, DBS, all that stuff. So this
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: quote is very relevant. This is from Vance Joseph when
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: he talks about his defense. He says, quote, I don't
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: call a lot of man. What we do is mostly
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: pressure up front with matchup principles in the back end.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: It's like playing a box and one defense in basketball,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: it's zoned outside or zone. I'm sorry, it's zoned inside
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: and match outside. These days, the beauty of playing great
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: defense in this league is the ability to have different structures.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: If you can get dbs close to wide receivers without
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: giving it that man tag quote unquote, that's the expertise
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: because when you call man, the player has to cover
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: both sides of the route. In this league, that's difficult.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Everyone has great receivers. The quarterbacks are so accurate with
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: what we call. We're giving the player one side of
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: the route, and we preach leverage. If you win your
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: leverage outside and the receiver breaks inside, you're going to
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: have a teammate there. It can look like man, but
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: it's not man. That's the beauty of what we do.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: That's the secret. I love that again, match principles, the
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: combination of things right, playing true man and then playing
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: more of that man match type of defense, tying it
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: in with a single high aspect, tying it in with
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: being hybridized fronts five down. I'm an odd front kind
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: of guy. I'm a three to four type of guy.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: It's just what I've always gravitated towards. But in today's NFL,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: I think it's a three to four or just an
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: odd front. In general, I think it gives you more
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: organic answers to changing the pre to post snap picture
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: on quarterbacks. And I think that is the core and
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: crux of what you need is a good defense in
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: today's NFL, and so much of it is talked about.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: You know, this guy's in coverages, win nude nudge, name
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: of the show, so much a change of the preto
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: postnat pictures of the conversation on the back end. Right, Okay,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: we're showing two high. We're gonna spend a single high.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: We're gonna show single high. We're gonna spin it two.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: We're running a non traditional Tampa. We're running Tampa two
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: Robert or Tampa two invert. We are running cover eight,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: we're running cover six, we are running split field coverages,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: and you know, we're locking the back side of a
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: three by one and then we're taking that safety from
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: that side and we're posting him to the other side.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Or we're running tricks and he's looking for that cross
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: or coming from number three and all these things. There's
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: so many like rules and picture change pieces that are
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: talked about on the back end, but the picture change
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: pieces up front I think are so important. That's why
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: I love simulated pressures. That's why I love creeper pressures.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: Leonard is very adept at the coverage pieces on the
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: back end, teaching guys rules for match based coverages. If
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: you can play match based coverages, I think it's you're
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: in such a good place's defense. The easiest coverage to
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: play is cover one right, single high man coverage. If
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: you have the horses for it, If you have the
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: dudes for it, play cover one. If your dudes are
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: that good and you can dare teams to try and
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: beat your corners, your golden man, you are living on
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: dream street. But it's hard to have those horses and
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: win that regularly, especially in today's NFL with how skewed the
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: rules are towards the offense. Plus you still need to
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: have pressure up front and all this stuff. If you
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: are good with a match coverage type of deal and
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: your rules are sound and your players understand it, it's
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: really beautiful stuff when you can have that type of
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: coordinated dance, and it's not easy to have that, but
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: when you can have that, I love that. So everything
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: he does is up my alley. From the hybridized fronts,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: the sims and the creepers, the odd front structure tie
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: it in with the coverage and making everything married and
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: as one, from the front to the back, single high stuff,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: match coverage pieces, all of that. Now, how it ties
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: into the bills. I'm gonna talk about more about some
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Jim Leonard stuff in a minute to kind of break
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: him down further, but I want to talk about how
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: that ties up the bills. Since a lot of us
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: in the chat here are kind of asking about that,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: We'll start from the back end. Yes, I think this
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: is fine for Benford and Harriston. Marty, you asked that, Yeah,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: I think that'll be fine. I think Benford can man
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: up on dudes. I think Harston can man up on dudes.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: They're fine in zone, and I think they're capable of
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: playing match stuff. Benford's already done it. Harston will have
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: to learn a bit more of it with how he
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: played at Kentucky, but I think he's capable of it.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: From a skill set standpoint. I don't know what he
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: has between the ears, but I think he can accomplish
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: that safety. What I think is interesting here, and I'm
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: gonna make this kind of a somewhat of a bigger point.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: I think the ideal fit and this hurts my heart
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: a little bit to say, because I love Taron Johnson.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: I think the ideal role for Cole Bishop is to
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: be a big nickel or the apex. I think in
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: an ideal world you move Bishop into Taron Johnson's spot.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I think Cole Bishop gives you a little bit more
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: of a skeleton key factor there as the apex and
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: the big nickel, and then you get two safeties, two
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: new safeties. I don't think Aron Johnson's going anywhere because
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: of his contract. I also am not completely out on Arran,
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: although I know he had a down year in twenty
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: twenty five. I think Terren's gonna be back, and I
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: think Cold Bishop is gonna be one of your safeties
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: if you're playing more single high. Cold Bishop is very
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: very good at being that down safety. Anything that gets
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: him in and around the box is a win for
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: Cold Bishop and the Bills. Anything that gets him to
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: play in the role that he was at when he
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: was at Utah, when him and Sioni Vaki were the
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: two safeties there and they were doing a lot of
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: monster Man, big nickel apex type of stuff there. I'm
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: all for that. That's where he succeeds. Let him man
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: cover tight ends in and around the line of scrimmage.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: Let him man cover running backs. Let him sit in
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: the hook curls and the curl flats. Let him do
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: all that stuff. The plays that he was making this year.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: Granted he made some deep he made some stuff happen
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: from a you know, a two high alignment deep downfield.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: He made some plays from a single high alignment. Right.
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: I don't think he's horrible from depth. I do think
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: he's still a work in progress there, and he has
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: improved a little bit. But I think setting him up
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: for success and allowing his skill set to flourish is
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: him being the down safety, him being a box safety,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: him being more of the Jordan Poyer than the Micah High.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: So if you're playing a lot of single high stuff,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: that's perfect. Even playing Cover one Cover three, if you're
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: looking in at pre snap or you're spinn into a
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: post snap, let him be that down safety. You can
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: play Cover three sky where he's in the curdl flat.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: You could play Cover three buzz where he's in the
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: hook curl. I don't care. That is awesome, that's fine, right,
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: And he can also spin to the post every once
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: in a while, and be your single high post safety.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: Now that means regardless of what defense you're in, right,
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: but especially if you're a defense that's going to play
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: a little more single high, you need a rangy ballhawk
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: as the other safety to play in the post and
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: compliment Cole Bishop. Can't be someone that's completely siloed, right,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: just needs to be someone that's a little more Mica
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: high than he is. Jordan Poyer. Again, nobody yell at me.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I know Jordan Poyer could also play in the post.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: I know he could also play deep. I know Hi
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: could also play in the box and do all that
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: kind of stuff. Right, they were both they redefined the
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: safety position. They remove the free and strong from the
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: labels for safety, right, and they both just became safeties.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: But I think you need a pair Cole Bishop with
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: a rangy ballhawk type of safety on the back end.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: I don't think that guy's currently on the roster. I
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: don't think Taylor Rapp is that guy. I would love
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: if Jordan Hancock's that guy, but I don't think Jordan
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Hancock's that guy. I don't think DeMar Hamlin's that guy.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I think you need to draft that guy or sign
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: that guy Kobe Bryant from Seattle is somebody that I
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: am very attracted to as a free agent. I think
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: he's gonna cost a little bit too much. Plus, his
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: misstackle rate jumped significantly in twenty twenty five and almost
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: doubled versus what it was in twenty twenty four. But
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: he also made some good tackles as well. You got
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: a pair Cole Bishop with a ballhawk rangey type of
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: safety on the back end. Whether it's especially if it's
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Jim Leonard's defense, but even if it's someone else's defense. Now,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: let's move to the linebackers, right. Part of what Leonard
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: did in his tenure and in his time at Wisconsin
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: was the linebackers that he used and the guys that
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: he had, you know, throughout his tenure. You know, you
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: had Leo Schanall there who now plays for the Chiefs.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: You had Nick Herbig who is now at the Steelers
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: who plays off the edge. There. You had Jack Sanborn.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: You had dudes that were thumpers and could play the
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: run more true. Three four linebackers right, Guys who can
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: rush off the edge, guys who can drop into coverage,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: Guys who can function inside on sub and sub packages.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: They can play off ball, they can play on the line,
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: they can contribute to a five down front right, or
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: they can drop that those hybridized type of dudes. The
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: linebacker position becomes very important. That's where I think a
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: lot of significant changes are going to be made again.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: Torell Bernard injury history. Even if we're looking at it
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: right now, right Matt Mlonald's money got moved around. I
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: am going to confirm right now what I'm about to
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: say to make sure I am not crazy. Yeah, Matt Mlonald,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: he's got jeez, Matt Millonald's a UFA this offseason, but
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: he has a cap hit of eleven million dollars because
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: he's got a void year this year. He's got a
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: void year this year with a cap hit of eleven
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: million dollars, and he's got a void year next year
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: that has a cap hit a four point eight eight nine. God,
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: that's brutal. But Matt Mlonald's a UFA as of right now.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: You already, even if you're just playing the regular defense
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: you had this past year, you need a starting linebacker
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: opposite of around Bernard. Even if he's your starter, I
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: think you need to move Bernard to Will and get
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: yourself a bigger, thumping middle linebacker, not complete thumper. Right.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: I'm not looking for Levon Kirkland. I'm not looking for
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: down to high tower. I'm not saying that you need
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: more of a Devin Lloyd. You need more of a Foy,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: a Lucan right, that type of presence, which is why
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: I understand a little bit why cg Allen is getting
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: mocked to the Bills and some mock drafts, although I
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: think his coverage leaves a little to be desired. Linebacker
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: from Georgia conversation for another time, but linebacker becomes very
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: interesting because you look at these linebackers. Is it going
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to be Dorriyan and Bernard? Dor has made progress, I
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: still don't love him as a true starter in anything.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Linebacker is going to need some upgrading depending on you
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: know who, are you getting like an outside linebacker more
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: of an edge rusher kind of guy, or are you
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: using your edges or defensive ends more as those type
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: of guys. But linebacker would need some addressing. And as
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: the conversation says, so yeah, you need guys like Zach Bond,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: you need guys like Van Ginkle. You need those type
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: of body types, you need those type of skill sets.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: You need Leo Chanol's, you need Jack Sanbourn's, you need.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: Think of his Wisconsin linebackers at that time, right or
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: go into I was saying, I think I think am
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: I crazy? Or Van Ginkle was Yeah, I was say
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: Van Kinkles or Wisconsin guy. So is Zach Bond. Yeah,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: just get all th wiseconson linebackers that currently exist in
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: the NFL. But those are the type of dudes that
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: you need. The Zach Bond's, the Van Kinkles, guys that
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: can play up on the line, who can play off ball.
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: The Bills don't have those linebackers. That's not what they're
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: built right now. You need guys that have some arm length,
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: Guys that can brush the quarterback a little bit off
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: the edge, Guys that can drop into coverage. That linebacker
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: spot becomes a hybrid ized spot. Bills currently don't have
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: that defensive line I think is interesting. I think Greg
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Russau can be a stand up edge in a three
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: four defense. He's shown actually you can be pretty adept
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: in coverage, so I got no problem drop at him
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: in the hook curls or even in the flats. I
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: think he's fine. He's got the length to just play
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: that type of edge. Good as a run defender. You're
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: good to go there. Michael Hoyt, I think you know,
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: as the comment just came in and asked about Michael Hoyt.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: Michael Hoyt, similar deal. You can play him as an
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: edge in a three to four and be fine, and
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: then same thing in subpackages. Kick him into the inside,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: do all that kind of stuff. Right, So I think
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: you're okay with Hoyt. I think you're okay with Rousseau
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: as your edge is there. Obviously you need to reinforce
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: a little bit. I didn't love the land in Jackson
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: pick last year. I still don't love it now. I
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: don't know. I don't love his fit in general or
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: him as a player. I think it's fit is questionable.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: In a three four odd fund structure. Similar for Javon Solomon,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: you're gonna have to address the edge position. You need
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: more of a three to four odd front type of edge.
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: You know, those type of dudes defensive tackle on the interior.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: Some of the guys you have can still work, right.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: So Jim Leonard's base front that he likes to use.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: Is I mentioned that you know the odd front, and
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: so people Willet referred to as like three to four
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: type of deal. But he runs a tight front defense,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: or he did at Wisconsin. You're still getting a lot
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: of odd front principles and mechanics within the Denver defense
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: as well. But essentially what an odd front is is
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: you have a true nose tackle lined up in a
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: zero technique head up on the center. You're Ted Washington,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: You're Pat Williams, those legends, true nose line head up
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: on the center. You could tilt them, you could shade
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: them a little bit, but you need a nose line
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: head up on the center. And then your two defensive
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: ends are lined up in four eyes, which are on
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: the inside shoulders of your two offensive tackles. Right, So
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: you've got a nose line head up on the center,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: maybe a little shaded or tilted, but you got a
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: nose head up on the center, and then you got
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: your defensive ends lined up on the inside shoulders of
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: the offensive tackles. That's a four eye. I think Ed
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: Oliver can be a four eye. I think T J.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: Sanders can be a four eye. I'm still questionable on TJ. Sanders.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: I wouldn't love TJ. Sanders's fit in an odd front,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: in a tight front, in Jim Leonards defense, but maybe
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: he could work a little bit. Dion Walker. I think
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: he would be a solid four eye. I think he
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: could moonlight a little bit as a nose. I don't
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: want to get into it too much now, and I
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: hope nobody yells at me. I think Dean Walker had
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: a good year. I think he surpassed my expectations. I
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: don't think he's this stud in the making that a
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: lot of people are making him out to be. And
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: I think his run defense is still a little questionable.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: Though he improved significantly and played much better than I
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: thought he would, he will still get displaced. He will
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: get moved left to right, he will get moved vertically.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: I don't want him playing as the true nose. I
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: think he's a dancing bear and his athletic I'd love
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: to get him as a four eye in an odd front.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: Get me a true nose. To get a true nose,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: Dion Walker can live a little bit as the backup nose,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: or rotate in there. You can put Dion Walker as
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: a four eye, get me a. You have to get
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: a true nose to add to this group. You need,
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: you know, big Citrus from Iowa. You need a true
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: nose to drop as a stone in the center of
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: your defense. You want somebody to be dropped in there
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: and play that spot, right. That's kind of who you want,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: That's kind of what you want to be. I don't
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: think it's a complete overhaul or retooling of the defense.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: The pieces aren't complete, like for like. It's not an
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: easy fit. They're seamless fit. I should say there is
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: going to be some retooling, right because the Bills are
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: right now. They're a four down over front, one gap
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: penetrating type of defense. They are not a tight front,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: odd front type of structure. They are not a five
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: down you know, regular five down front. They are not
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: built for that type of structure fitting the run, or
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: that type of structure playing the past. I do think
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: it could work. Yeah, great County here from David. Yeah,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: you want Vince Wilford, that's the nose tackle you want.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: You want Casey Hampton from the Steelers. You want a
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: LOADI nada. Drop him in the center, that's what you want.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Drop him right on that center. Let him control the
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: A gaps. He's either you know, read and react and
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: you know he's kind of controlling the center, or he's
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: attack react, kind of jack him up. Play from there.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: You might lag him a little bit. You might have
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: him read the center, crash the A gaps, all that
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: type of stuff. Right, You need somebody in the center,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: like a stone to drop control, be in that middle space, mitigate,
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: you need a plugger, you need an eater of worlds
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: at nose tackle. That's what you need. And I think
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: Walker could moonlight is that and rotate in a bit.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: But I don't think putting him there is ideal, and
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: I don't think that's setting him up for success. Now
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna do a lot of reading right now. Yeah,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: Ted Washington, Ted Washington, Pat Williams. Those type of tutes,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: And again that they don't have to be huge. I
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: know a lot of the name bringing up. It's not like, okay,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: so you need a three hundred and thirty pound guy,
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: you need a three hundred and forty pound guy. No,
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: you need someone granted a certain size and stoutness and
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: physicalness or frame tends to play best to that type
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: of role. But it's more about the skill set. It's
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: more about the play style. You need someone who's a
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: run defender first, who's a displacement mitigator, who's a block eater,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: who's a space eater. That's what you need. It could
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: be somebody that's three hundred and fifteen pounds. It could
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: be somebody that's three hundred and thirty pounds, right, It
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: could be a lot of different things. It could be
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: somebody that's three ten if they know how to play it,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: and they know how to read blocks, and they know
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: how to play with leverage and drop the knee and
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: split double teams and reduce their surface area and win
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: with their hands and all these types of pieces and
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: other things that I'm not even mentioning. Cool. You could
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: be a three hundred and five pound guy that works.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: It's about the skill set and the role. That's not
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: necessarily attached to a certain size or a certain weight
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: or a certain frame, but certain sizes, certain weights, and
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: certain frames do tend to lend themselves better to that
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: role and that skill set. Now, let's read about Jim
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: Leonard Well. I went back to watch some of his
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: coaching clinics and today to kind of round out, you
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: know more again. I talked about some notes on what
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: he is schematically and what I've seen from my times watching.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: I just went back to my notes from like years ago,
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: when I've been in love with him since like twenty
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: twenty three to twenty twenty two, as a defensive coordinator
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: in mind and wanting him to come to the bills.
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: So I brought up some of my notes in summary.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: But now I want to go to direct quotes from him,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: lines from him about who he is, what he is.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: I'm going to go through read a bunch. I got
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: to stock because we've got a super chat. Jason, Dude,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: you're so generous. You're killing it this episode. Thank you.
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: Jason says, do you think Shack can help next year?
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: I know he's a free agent. Do we bring him
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: back for me? Yes? I would take Shack Thompson back
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: and have him be your middle linebacker. I don't think
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: he's going to cost too much. In an ideal world,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: you're getting a dude who is like a young stud
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: potentially to get like in him in that system and
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: keep him there. I just don't know how the money's
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: going to align. So I would take the high floor
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: known quantity of Shack. If the Bears cut Edmunds, do
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: you believe he would be a good fit in Leonard's defense,
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: I think you could work with Tremaine Edmands. I think
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: the athleticism. You could also line him up at edge
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: a little bit, let him do some stuff. You get
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: Edgemond's back and let him be a rusher. I think
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Edmunds would fit. I think Edmonds would be fine. I
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: think he's more of a four to three linebacker than
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: he is anything. But I think Edmunds. I would prefer
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Shack because I think Shack is better at block deconstruction
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: and coming downhill. Yeah, kmore. And I was waiting for
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: somebody to hear the catch the joke? Did I hear
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: tremain Tremaine to edge? I would prefer somebody who's better
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: coming downhill and taking on blocks and you know, block deconstructing.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: But Edmunds isn't the worst idea. I would prefer Shack though,
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: because of his skill set in his playstyme. That's fair. Yes,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Shack would help next year, all right? Jim Leonard core
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: beliefs uh. This is a quot he attributes direct Ryan,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: who he says may have gotten this call from somewhere
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: else but Jim Leonard. Football is a simple game complicated
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: by coaches. Jim Leonard believes players need to learn to
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: think for themselves. Becoming adaptable as a player is extremely invaluable.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: You try to expose players to the multitude of scenarios
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: they'll face in games, knowing that you're outside the white
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: lines on game day. You're counting on guys to step
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: up and rise up and play in positive ways. You
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: have to give them room to grow and room to think.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: His core beliefs for oh nick saying, trade everything for styles,
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: oh sunny styles linebacker from Ohio State. That would work
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: and that would be fun. So those core beliefs four
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: of them consistency, efficiency, flexibility, and response versus opportunity to
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: learn Consistency broken up into several little points. His goal
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: with consistency is to be as fast as possible, to
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: be as his players, to be as fast as possi
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: physical as possible, and as confident as possible, and the
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: majority of coaching takes away from those things. His tenants
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: with inconsistency coaching style being the same guy on a
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: daily basis as far as your approach and how you
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: handle your players, your communication, your energy, everything being the
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: same guy on a daily basis, your teach progression. How
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: do you give information to your players? How do you
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: get them to learn a skill or a defense? Is
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: it consistent? Do they know what to expect? Terminology? He
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: likes to make things as clean and concise as possible
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: in terms of his terminology, routine, daily and weekly understanding.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: How do we get to second level and next level
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: things faster, having a routine, sticking to it, improving that
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: stacking and getting better game preparation. I love this quote
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: from him. He says, we are very complex in what
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: we do in many people's eyes, but with how I
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: ask our guys to coach it and the consistency that
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: we have and how we coach and teach, I think
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: it makes it simple for our guys and they trust
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: what we do. I think that's a highlight in anything
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: that you've seen from Jim Leonard is his defense is complex,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: but there's simplicity within how complex it is. Right, there's
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: not a ton of stuff for the sake of a
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: ton of stuff. There's adjustments layered on top of a
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: core base that he's able to go with. So you
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: have checks and you have balances and you have adjustments
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: within everything that isn't throwing everybody completely for a loop.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: There's not a shift or a change in personnel or
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: a change in formation or alignment, and you see everybody
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: frantically trying to figure out. They know their checks, they
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: know their adjustments, they know what they are because they're
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: complex and what they do. But Jim Leonard and his
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: staff have the ability to make that complexity simplistic, teach
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: it to the guys and get them to understand. That's
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: very important too when you have a match based coverage
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: type of system on the back end, because that means
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: it's rule base. Match coverage is all, Hey, I'm player A,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: I'm watching player B, and see if B does this,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: I do that. If C does that, I do this.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: And that's for if your player A, if your player X,
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: if your player W, and everybody has to see the
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: same thing at the same time. They all have to know. Okay,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: if player B does this, I do number one. If
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: player B does that, I do number two. Okay, now
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: this play I'm keying on player See if player C
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: does this, I do number three. If play all of
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: that and everybody's got to see it. The corner has
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: to see it, the safety has to see it, the
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: apex has to see if, the mic has to see it.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: The will on the other side has to see it. Right,
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: the opposite corner, the opposite safety, all of that, everybody's
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: got to see everything at the same time. From a
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: coverage structure standpoint, there's a lot of teaching. There's a
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: lot of learning, there's a lot of theory and turning
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: it into practical application. Jim Leonard has a ton of
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: success in doing that. And again more quotes from what
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: you can what can you effectively get your guys to
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: do on a consistent basis? Anything more than that is
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: a waste and you're not really doing your players justice
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: as far as what you're trying to get accomplished. If
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: you're not doing that, you're not putting the game in
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: their hands to let them win for you. I think
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: that is very telling. If you're not doing that, you're
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: not putting the game in their hands to let them
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: win for you. That is what his belief is. Right,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: preparing guys, giving them rules that are simple, right, but
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: not so simple that they can be deciphered by the offense. Right,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: So giving them things that are complex to an offense,
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: but are simple for his guys to learn and understand
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: and put them and put into practical application, putting the
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: game in their hands and letting them win for you. Again,
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: giving your players room to grow and room to think.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: All of that type of deal, right, And I think
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: that again, that's everything you need your players playing fast
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: mentally and physically. It's not just oh well, that team
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: plays so fast because everybody runs a four to four.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: It's how you process, it's what you understand. You are
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: you prepared for this formation in this situation? Do you
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: know what's coming? Are you anticipating what's coming? Have you
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: been able to narrow down? Okay, in this situation, they're
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: likely going to do a B or C and you
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: know what you're doing in all of those, and you
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: know what your checks are and everybody knows that, and
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: everybody thinks like that. He's really adept at that, and
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: it's super important him. Again, one of his core beliefs
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: and core tenants. So that's everything tied to consistency. Next
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: is efficiency. He says he's not a first in, last
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: out type of guy. He believes you find any ways
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: possible to do your job as well as you can
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: and as efficiently as you can. Always challenge yourself to
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: do better and don't waste time. Can you do your
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: job better? Can you do your job quicker? And how
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: can you get your players better faster? Love that Another
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: core belief flexibility. We're got to talk about this a bunch.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: He talks about it throughout anything in Wisconsin, times, in Denver,
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: all of it flexibility. Again. His base defense is a
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: tight front, the four I, zero and a four I.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: His nickel defense is a four down overfront, sometimes an underfront.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: He has implemented both his tenants within flexibility. Build a
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: sound scheme, build in flexibility for complex problems, and then
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: have less calls but more possible adjustments. He says, this
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: calms our guys down. We can teach the basis of
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: what we do. We can teach all of the finer
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: details and then have minor adjustments to what we do,
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: rather than have more on top of more. We start
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: with almost bare bones and then add to a game
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: plan based on what the issues we're going to see,
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: based on how we can dictate. So he starts at
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: the bare bones level, the basic level, and then they
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: add to a game plan based on what they're going
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: to see from an offense personnel wise, situational wise, run
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: concept wise, past concept wise, all of that. That again,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: you're tying it into the matchup of the opponent. This
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: isn't This isn't the Sean McDermott defense where it's like hey,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: Bobby Babbage defense, where hey, we're gonna come in, we're
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: gonna play our defense. You know who we are and
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: what we do, and then we're going to adjust from there.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: He is tailoring a game plan within his scheme, right,
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: He's tailoring that game plan week in and week out
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: based on what the opponent is and who the opponents are,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: based on how he can dictate to them. And that's
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: a big piece. Being able to dictate to the offense
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: playing on the front foot versus an offense something you've
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: heard me say a lot for what I think this
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: Bill's defense needs. This is a great quote coming up
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: now and very telling from Jim Leonard. He says, quote,
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: I never want to be a counter puncher. I always
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: want us to have things in our game plan that
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: we can dictate the flow to an offense. You need
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: these offenses to have to go over to the sideline
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: and find an answer. And the more flexibility you have
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: within your scheme and the more ways you have to
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: be that throwing that jab or throwing some of those
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: uppercuts on them, then they have to go make adjustments
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: and not just attack, which is all they want to do.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: End quote. He puts them he wants to put an
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: offense on the back foot. He wants to come out,
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: punch him in the mouth and dictate them. He wants
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: to make them go over to the sideline, go to
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: their iPads or their surface tablets and be looking at
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: it stuff and trying to figure out what the coverage was,
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: or what the front was, or how that guy, how
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: there was a free runner coming off the edge, how
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: their protection rules got manipulated, how their cover, how their
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: route concepts are getting eaten up, how the defense is
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: properly spacing out the route distributions and nailing down on everything.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: He wants to play on the front foot. And I
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: love that, and I think that's how you have to
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: play in today's defense. You take it to an offense.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: You build your game plan week in and week out
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: as much as you can. Like it's a playoff game
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: where you're a matchup based defense. It's why Steve Spagnolo
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: has been great come playoff time. It's why luy Ana
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: Rouma has been good come playoff time, because they're able
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: to build these matchup based game plans. They were able
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: to say, we know who you are on offense, We're
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: gonna you know, you throw with your right We're gonna
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: tie your right hand behind your back and see if
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: you can punch us with your left and move your feet.
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: That's what Leonard does, all while attacking, all while having
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: simulated pressures and creepers and hybridizing his fronts, basing out
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: of that type, but then also being able to get
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: into nickel match principles on the back end, single high store,
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: you know, man some zone, but really a lot of man,
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: a lot of man match type of stuff, good good pieces,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: good stuff. And then his last core principle, a core
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: belief response versus the opportunity to learn. This is more philosophical,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: but I like this. He says, you have the response
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: versus opportunity to learn, and it's broken down into two
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: spots in the moment and reflective in the moment. You know,
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: it's like in game, you just got beat. You know
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: your corner. You just got beat for a touchdown, right.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: You have one opportunity for a response the next play
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: or that next drive, and you need to respond immediately
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: how you react to that current situation of adversity. Once
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: the next play is done, it's time to reflect. And
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: when you get into the reflective period, that's like a debriefing.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: You know what lessons did you learn? How did you
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: handle your responses in the moment. What was your response
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: in the moment when you look back on that, are
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: you going to grow as a player and being reflective
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: and taking that opportunity to learn. I just think again,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: all those these are his core beliefs. I think he's
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: a very smart guy. I think he is sound schematically
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: and sound in terms of player development. He was a
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: guy who's tremendously loved and respected in Wisconsin, and it
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: appears to be the same in Denver. Man coverage principles
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: for him in coverage winning position, I discipline, flexibility again
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: talking about defensive backs and having versatility. This is when
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: he was with the Broncos. He talks about and he says,
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: you need versatility in your DBS, whether it's flexibility between
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: corners and safeties, or being able to play outside and inside.
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: You can't hide guys anymore in your dB room. You
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: have to be able to communicate and think. If you
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: can't play inside the numbers, they're just going to put
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: their best receiver in there and work those matchups. He
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: understands offenses, he understands schemes, he understands systems, he understands
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: how to implement things, build coach teach. I don't get
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: this hype often for an individual coach. Like I said,
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: if anybody like cares wants to poor receipts. I've been
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: tweeting about Jim Leonard and me wanting him as Bill's
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: defensive coordinator since twenty twenty three. I went back and
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: looked it up today and linked in one of the
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: tweets I post or posted. I'm a big college football guy.
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: You guys know that I watched just as much college
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: football as I do NFL football, which is saying something
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: because there's like a million college football games every week.
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: I loved what he did at Wisconsin, and he took
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: those teams that really had no offense and he made
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: them pretty successful with what they were defensively, and the
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: guys that he rotated in and it's because they were
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: sound and it's again, it's time to all these principles.
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: It's tied to, you know, the flexibility and having a
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: sound scheme and building in flexibility for complex problems, and
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: being able to dictate to offenses and play on the
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: front foot and make them play reactively and play on
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: the back foot and play off the play while retreating.
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: He understands what it takes to kind of run a group.
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: He comes from a good tree. He's got a lot
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: of good influences, you know, Aaron and the chap mentioned earlier.
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: You know, watching all the Randa stuff, it's because he's
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: tied to Dave Randa, what he's learned with Vance Joseph
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: in Denver these past couple years. And how good those
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: defenses have been. I know you might say that as
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: Bills fan, Well, the Bills put up thirty on them
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: and still had five turnovers. The Bills are a good
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: foil for the Broncos defense. But on the whole, the
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: Broncos defense has been one of the better defense in
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: the leagues the past several years, and it's tied to
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: a lot of the cover structure they stuff on stuff
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: they do on the back end, and that advanced Joseph
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: quote that I read earlier in terms of, you know,
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: what we do is mostly pressure upfront with matchup principles.
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: On the back end, you're gonna get a lot of that.
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: You know, he's gonna blitz, he's gonna bring pressure. Looks
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: he's gonna show five, bring five, he's gonna show five,
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: Bring three, he's gonna show five, bring four, he's gonna
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: show five, bring six, and a multitude of other combinations.
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: From that right, you'll get true pressures, true blitzes, which
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: are five or more rushers. You're gonna get sims, you're
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: gonna get creepers, simulated pressures, four man rush, dropping a
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: non traditional coverage guy and bringing a non traditional rusher.
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: So simulated pressure is showing five at the line and
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: you bring four, but it's three defensive linemen and a linebacker,
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: and you're dropping a defensive end or a defensive tackle
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: into coverage. Creaper pressure is the same thing, except you're
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: not showing pressure beforehand. You're just off ball lining up
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: regular four down front, and then you bring a guy.
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: I really like what he's about Schematically, I really like
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: what he's about philosophically and ideologically, and the identity that
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: he builds with his defense. I do think, you know,
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: they could bring him in. I think he could make
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: some things work with what they have. But I do
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: think it is something where you're gonna have to turn
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: this roster a little bit. You're going to have to
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: bring some Jim Leonard guys in or some odd front
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: hybridized front type of guys. In The linebacker room is
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: gonna have to change a little bit. There's gonna be
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: some growing pains there. The defensive line room interior and
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: on the edge is gonna have to change a little bit.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: There's gonna be some growing pains there. I think on
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: the on the coverage side, you're largely fine with Hairston,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: Benford and Cole Bishop. I would love to bring Trey
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Wipe back as your corner three. I think that would
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: be awesome. We'll see what happens with Dorian Strong. But
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: I think on the back end you just need a
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: Rangey Ballhawk safety to pair with Bishop. But the front,
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: you know, the front seven, however you want to label it.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: You know, the linebackers and the defensive line, you're gonna
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: have to do some churning there. I don't think it's
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: something you can completely overhaul in one off season. It
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: took Mike McDonald a couple of years to tool everything
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: in Seattle and look where they are now, So I
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: think there's gonna be some growing pains. You need to
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: have some patience. I don't think that means the defense
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: would be a disaster in twenty twenty six and it's
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: just like, hey, everybody, give it a chance. But I
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: do think there would be some churn this offseason and
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: likely next offseason to kind of get this defense where
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: they wanted to where they want it to be, just
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: because of the tweets that they're gonna have to do
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: upfront and what you're gonna have to do, you know,
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: at defensive line and linebacker within that upfront piece. But
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: I'm very excited. This is a personal thing for me.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: For again, this is personal because I like him and
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: the type of defense he runs is the type of
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: defense that I gravitate towards, both in terms of how
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: he teaches it and how he calls it and the
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: play style and identity and ideology and philosophy all of that,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: but also objectively and again well there's some arbitrari ins
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: to it, but this is what I believe you need
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: to be in today's NFL to be successful, unless you're
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: gonna be the Texans and just have an amazing defensive
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: line highlighted by two all world edges and having two
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: really good linebackers, and then having a really good, you know,
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: skeleton teach skeleton key type of Big Nickel and Jalen Petrie,
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: and then having the best corner Tannement Football and Derek
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: Stingley and Kamari Lassiter, and then having Kaylen Bullock as
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: a really good single high safety who can do whatever.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: Unless you're just gonna roll out dudes who are just
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: violent and better than everyone else and say good luck
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: beat us. You need to have some more scheme to
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: your game, and I think he would just be such
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: a great get. I am Adrian's Games City for Anthony.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: Can you give us the link to the article. It's
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: not an article. A lot of what I read it's
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: plucked from different pieces. Some of it is from my
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: own notes, some of it is from different coaching pieces.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: But if you go to YouTube and let's see, hold
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: on here, I'm going to find it for you. If
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: you go to YouTube and you type in Jim Leonard
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: Coaching Clinic. It's titled it for me, it's the sixth
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: or fifth one down. The video is titled Football Philosophy
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: Core Beliefs. It's thirteen minutes and forty one seconds long,
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: and it breaks down a bunch of what I just said. Again,
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: some of what I read here is from that, some
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: of it is from my own notes and just what
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: I've known throughout the years. But what I read verbatim
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: here is from that. So what kind of gives you
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: a peek and do his inner mind in the workings
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: of it, so you're not just basing it off of
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: my analysis. But yeah, So go type in Jim Leonard
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: Coaching Clinic on YouTube and it's the one titled Football
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: Philosophy Core Beliefs. Not a time of you. It's only
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: seven hundred fifty eight views right now, but it's cool.
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: I think there's a good chance he comes here. I
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: don't want to say that, let me backpack. I'm too
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: superstitious for that. This would I'm frustrated with a lot
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: of decisions right now with this team, just what they've
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: done for a couple of years with roster construction and
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: then what we've seen so far this offseason. I said
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: it on Twitter, I said it on Blue Sky. This
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: would make me forgive so much. If they hired Jim
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: Leonard as their defensive coordinator, I would love this. But again,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: I do think there's gonna be some growing painings. I
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: do think there's gonna be some roster turn I do
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: think it's not gonna happen overnight because they are limited
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: with cap space and some draft capital. You already have
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: to invest in the defense and part of it too, right,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: You already have to invest in the defense this offseason.
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: A JF Vanessa's the UFA, Joey Bose is the UFA,
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: right and Nick's seven hundred views from and eight from
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: the rest of the world. That's fair. So you've got
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: two tickets of paradise. You've already got a defense that
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: needs to be retooled, right, Like, are you moving Bernard
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: to Will? Are you keeping Bernard at Mike and you're
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: signing a Will? Or are you not? Is Dorrin Williams
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: going to be that guy? Do you think he can
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: be that guy? What are you doing at Edge? Because
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: Bosa's UFA and aj Apanessa's a UFA. Is Devon Solomon
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: ready to take on a bigger load? Is Landon Jackson?
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: How healthy is Michael hoy going to be? Is he
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: ready for the start of the season At defensive tackle?
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: You've got ed Oliver, Dion Walker, TJ Sanders. TJ Sanders
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: is still kind of unknown at this point, although you
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: can play Devil's advocate and say he had to play
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: out a position for this year, but this year was
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: kind of a lost year for him, and I don't
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: think he looked great for the most part. Dwayne Carter's
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: coming off in Achilles, but he was very underwhelming as
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: a rookie. You've already got to add to your defensive line,
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: so having to switch the scheme and switch the structure
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: isn't the biggest ask in the world because you already
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: have to add to those position groupings. So instead of
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: adding to those position groupings for what you've been schematically
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: you know in past lifetimes under Sean McDermott and Bobby Babbage.
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: Babbage add to those position groupings upfront. For a new
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: scheme and a new structure, you already need to add
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: bodies up front. Just add them for a new scheme
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: and a new structure. Similar conversation to the linebacker spot
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: as well, and then at safety, I think you need
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: a rangey ballhawk to pair with Cole Bishop anyway, but
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: especially if you're gonna play more single high stuff like
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: Leonard and the Broncos have done these past couple of seasons,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: especially this past year. Joe says, here's a simple approach.
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Trade the first for Jefferson, sign Romeo Dubbs and re
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: signed Cooks. Then use every other pick you have on defense,
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: fair Dune and Dustin. There you go. I do like
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: Romeo Dubs a lot. My issue is I he would
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: help the Bills offense. I still think you need more
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: of I think you need more Alex Peers than you
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: do Romeo Dubs. If we're going to go for that,
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: or if they could afford him, I would take Mike
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: Evans on like a one year deal, just because I
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: love Mike Evans and he's still a really good player.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: You need more vertical presence and field stretching, so you
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: need more Alex Peers than you do Romeo Dubbs. I
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: think Dubs will be cheaper than Piers, but I think
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: and I would welcome Dubbs, but I think you need
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: more of an Alec Piers than you do a Romeo
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: Dubbs if we're looking at the free agency list. But
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: I don't dislike that approach. And yes, then you use
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: every other pick you have on defense. I know people aren't.
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: Yeah Swin says, you got a draft defense again, laugh
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: out loud. It sucks, but you have to one thousand percent.
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: I know people aren't gonna like it, especially with like, oh,
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: you gotta help Josh Allen and the receivers and center
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: and left guard and all this stuff. You have to
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: draft defense again. Like I kind of laid it out
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: and I'm gonna get into it more in the Roster
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: Show and the kind of the recap and the go
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: forward and my outlining of the offseason likely next week
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: unless something crazy happens again. But you you already need
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: even if you're not changing the scheme, Even if everything
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: stays right, even if Sean McDermott stayed, Bobby Babbage stayed,
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: nobody changed defensively in the scheme and the structure was
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: going to stay the same, you already have to add
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: to your defense, even if you're not talking scheme change
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: or structure change. You already have to add to the defense.
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: You have to add to your edge grouping, and somewhat significantly,
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: I still think Greg Rousseau is more of an edge
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: two than he is an edge one. So you need
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: to add to your edge grouping. You need to add
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: to your interior. You need to add it linebacker, you
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: need to add it safety like starters and depth for
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: essentially all those positions for me, depending on how you
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: viewed Dean Walker. But yeah, you you need a lot
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: of help on defense. That's why again I think like
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: this offseason moving to scheme, to change the scheme and structure.
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: Oh man, we're going from a four to three to Again,
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: I don't want to simplify because it's not just going
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: from a four to three to a three four. But
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: I know that's a lot of that's a lot of
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: understandable terminology for folks. So even if you're just going
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: from a four to three to a three four, that's
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: not crazy because you have to add bodies to that
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: side of the ball anyway via free agency in the draft.
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: So this would be a good a good offseason to
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: do it because you already have to add those bodies.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: It's not like, well, we're pot committed, and you know
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: we've already got a solid locked in starting eleven. From
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: a contract perspective and from a skill perspective, and from
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: an effectiveness perspective, you don't have that. There's questions about
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: the effective and if there there's questions about the effectiveness,
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: there's questions about the quality. There's questions about the depth.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: And even if there wasn't, you still have to add
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: bodies like you don't have enough bodies, So you might
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: as well switch the scheme while you're at it. Jason,
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: I appreciate you again. You're crushing it, Jason says, agree, Anthony,
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: I think Leonard's scheme maximizes the abilities slash skill sets
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: of players, not covering up their deficiencies. Football IQ is
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: important or you're not playing period. Well said, I should
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: have just put this up and I wouldn't have had
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: to say anything else. Sincerely, that's a really good comment.
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: Spot on. I'm gonna leave this comment up as I
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: take a drink of water because I'm ridiculously man. That
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: wasn't enough. That was enough to wet my whistle. Went
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: need to keep it going. I'm so thirsty. Yeah, he's
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: a guy who maximizes his guy's talents with his scheme,
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: like you can have dudes, but he's good at maximizing
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: things schematically even when you don't have the dudes, which
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: I really like. And again, I think his structure and
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: scheme naturally lends itself to today's NFL, where you're trying
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: to change the pre to post snap picture on quarterbacks
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: up front and on the back end you're bringing some blitzes,
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: you're bringing some sims and some creepers, which are your
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: safe pressures quote unquote, because you're still dropping seven into coverage.
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: You're multiple in the back end, you're multiple upfront, you're
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: playing match coverage, having good rules. It's good stuff. It's
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: good stuff. It's good stuff. It's good stuff. I'd liked
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: him for years. Again, this is not I feel like
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: you have to say discla now because so many people
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: ride the hype and ride the wave. This is not
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: like Well, I started looking him up today and I
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: got super hype and I hadn't heard him on it before.
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: I've been I wanted Jim Leonard for several years in
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: a very long time, and I've liked theimember since he
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: was a player. Again, for those of you who don't know, like,
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: Ed Reid's my favorite player of all time. So when
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: the Bills would fall apart in the drought, I would
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: be like, Okay, I'm gonna switch my folks to the Ravens,
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: and I hope the Ravens win the Super Bowl. And
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: I remember that two thousand and eight Ravens team will
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: sincerely forever, you know, live in my heart with them going,
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: you know it, just how they how they went down,
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: who they beat, you know, losing to the Steelers in
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: the stupid AFC Championship game. But that was the year
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: with Ed Reid's awesome interceptions against the Dolphins in the
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: wildcard round. And then they go They were the six seed,
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: which was the final seed in the last wildcard seed
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: at the time Joe Flackle's rookie year. They go to Tennessee.
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: They beat the one seed Titans in Tennessee. Chris Johnson
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: gets hurt early in that game after he was gashing
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: the Ravens, which was a huge piece, but the Ravens
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: shocked Tennessee and beat him thirteen to ten in Tennessee. Like, yeah,
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: I benefit fan of Jim Leonard since his playing gays
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: at Wisconsin. I liked him with the Bills. I liked
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: them with the Ravens. I liked him with the Jets.
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: So he's a player who I liked just because of
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: how smart he was and how he played despite not
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: being the biggest or the fastest or the most athletically gifted. Dude,
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: he was just in the right places making the right plays.
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: Sounded fundamental, and that's how his defenses is played. Sound fundamental, flexible, smart,
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: attack minded. Again, everything that I read, I could not
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: be higher on Jim Leonard. He is. I don't want
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: to say he's the only defensive coordinator candidate that I want,
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: but he's what I want. I'm not even thinking of
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: other defensive coordinators. I am manifesting this to the universe.
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: If they sign him, a lot will be forgiven for
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: me and for me, which means they probably won't have him.
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: They'll probably get somebody else, or he'll sign somewhere else
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: and break my heart because that's how this offseason is going.
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: But yeah, Jim Leonard's awesome. I hope this answered a
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: lot of questions for you folks. I'm contemplating if they
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: sign uh Jim Leonard and income as a defensive coordinator.
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: I'll probably cut this up and to put it as
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: its own episode for people to kind of see and
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: dive into fully, so you don't have to scroll through
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: this full two hour long episode here. Yeah, Spinn says
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: people are more hype on Jim Leonard than Brady. I
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: absolutely am. I think Brady's fine. I think, and Win says,
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: this is getting me excited the way you're talking about Leonard.
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: I'm ready for disappointment, So am I I know with
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: how happy I am and excited I am that they're
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: they're they're not gonna get him and he'll go somewhere
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: else or do something crazy or like retire from football
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: just to break my heart or our hearts. But yeah,
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: it takes a lot for me to truly like love
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: somebody as a player or as a coordinator. And again
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: this is not to keep saying it, but like this
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: has been years in the making for me. I've liked
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: him since you know, COVID time at Wisconsin and what
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: he was doing. I just thought his defenses were so cool.
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: And again, they weren't getting like these crazy studs. It's
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: not like Wisconsin was like granted, herbig has been like
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: a good dude, but you weren't getting these regular like
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: college game wreckerds, Like you had some guys who turned
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: into solid players in the NFL and who have developed,
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: but you weren't getting guys like, oh man, you remember
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: that Wisconsin defense led by this amazing all pro type
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: of whatever, Like he got the most out of his dudes,
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: and he was really good schematically and sound while he
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: was at it, and a getting highlighted by his core beliefs.
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: And what's cool too, is you can read about somebody
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: or hear them speak and like, oh, that's his core beliefs.
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: Those are his fundamental principles. And you can see that
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: and read that and then watch his teams play and
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: be like that's not how they play. That doesn't make
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: any sense, Like what is he talking about? Jesse Mincher
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: was a guy like that, like we talked about on
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: last week's show. He has his core fundamental principles. Jesse
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: Mincher does, and he's that type of guy where like,
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: oh got it, like his four pillars effort and angles, block, deconstruction,
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: ball disruption, and obnoxious communication, Like you see that in
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: his defenses in college and in the NFL, and it's
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: same with with Jim Leonard. Like you see Granny, you
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: can't see some of the consistency pieces because those are
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: off the field and how he builds a team. But
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: you see with you know, their efficiency, their flexibility, their
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: sound scheme, you know the adjustments and the complexity within it.
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: But the straightforwardness and the simplicity of it, the hybrid
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: ized fronts, the attack mindedness, the matchup mindedness, playing on
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: the front foot, making offenses play on the back foot
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: and have to be responsive and adjust Really cool, really cool,
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: really cool, really cool. I'm very excited. I'm underwhelmed with
- 2:02:35Speaker 1: the Joe Brady hire, as you know, head coach, and
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of contradiction with the verbiage
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: of what he's gonna be versus what he's doing and
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: the report's coming out. I think there's so much mess there.
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: I'm trying to focus on the Jim Leonard piece and
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: get excited for that until they break my heart and
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: you know, decide not to bring him in, which would
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: absolutely destroy me. You know what wouldn't break my heart
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: and wouldn't destroy me. The best pizza in Buffalo, New York.
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: That is one pie pizza. If you have not had it,
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: you are missing out. Online menu can be found in
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: the episode show notes, whether here on YouTube or whichever
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: podcasting Apple platform you were listening to this show on
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: sweet sauce, pie cup and charp Pepperoni, great cheese sauce ratio.
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: If you get multiple toppings, they chop them up evenly,
- 2:03:19Speaker 1: sprinkle him across the pie. They do an amazing breakfast pizza.
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: They have good salads. Joe DeRosa is lying, so Joe says,
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: my favorite pizza. Loved it so much. This is the
- 2:03:29Speaker 1: kind of guy Joe DeRosa is. I was telling him NonStop, Hey,
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: when you come here, go to one pie. You gotta
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: get one pie. He agreed, He goes to one pie.
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: He went too late. They were sold out of pizza
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: that day. You know why because they sell out. You
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: know why because they are the best. Joe was laxa
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: days ago. He was lazy. He lacked conviction and he
- 2:03:52Speaker 1: lacked faith, and he missed out on that one pie pizza.
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: And it's something he truly and sincerely regrets. Why because
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: it is the best pizza in Buffalo. And I don't
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: say that because they sponsor the show. They sponsor the
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: show because they are the best pizza in Buffalo, New York,
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: and I truly believe that it brings me absolute joy.
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: So if you are down and sad about Sean McDermott,
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: or you're underwhelmed about Joe Brady, or you're hopeful and
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: excited about Joe Bray or what's been going on, if
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: you're said, if you're happy, if you're whelmed, underwhelmed, overwhelmed,
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: even keeled, whatever one Pie will help you feel better
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: or feel even better. If you're already feeling good or
- 2:04:29Speaker 1: feeling better, get yourself some one Pie pizza. They also
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: have a catering division called Elevated Catering a Buffalo that
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: can be found in the episode show Notes as well.
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: I've had them cater multiple events for me and my
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: family and friends over the past couple of years. They
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: do not miss of course, I've got pizzas with it,
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: but I've gotten that salads. They're mac and cheese is.
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: They offer a bunch of different mac and cheese dishes,
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: a bunch of different chicken and rice dishes, like sandwiches
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: and bread like everything just slaps absolutely good when you
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: get some one Pie pizza. Don't be like Joe DeRosa
- 2:05:01Speaker 1: and miss out. Get yourself some one pie pizza. You
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: will not regret it. Huh. If you folks are still here,
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: I'm throwing up the banner of this, says tootles, folks,
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: because we're gonna start to wind down because yeah, Joe says.
- 2:05:13Speaker 1: Joe says it all caps. I tried and I was
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: so sad when I couldn't get it. He texted me
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: about it too, He's like, dude, I went to go
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: get one pie and they were sold out and I
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: was like, ah, you're missing out. If you have not already,
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: please please, please, and thank you drop Alke on this video.
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: I know it's corny to ask for that, and I
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: know it's corny to say. I know it's corny because
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: I say this every time I do this spiel like
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: sincerely are the lifeblood of these episode and of these streams.
- 2:05:34Speaker 1: So if you enjoyed this content, if you enjoyed this episode,
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: please please, please and thank you drop Alke on this video.
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: If you enjoyed this content, like so the lifeblood of
- 2:05:44Speaker 1: these streams, tell your family, friends, loved ones about this episode,
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: about the show. If you hated me or you hated
- 2:05:51Speaker 1: this episode, or hated the show. Tell your enemies and
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: try and ruin their day by making them watch this
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: episode instead. Larry says, thoughts, I'm bringing Cooks back for
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: full season. Think he will thrive even more, especially if
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: we get an actual wide receiver one, we'll open the
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: field even more. I would welcome Brandon Cooks back. I
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: think he has some unfortunate drops, but I think if
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: he's yeah in more of a wide receiver three or
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: a wide receiver four role, more power to him. I
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: think he's a professional. You could tell that the loss
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: affected him as well. He was one of the dudes
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: who spoke in the locker room that seemed pretty sad
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: and let down by what happened. I would welcome him back.
- 2:06:28Speaker 1: Not because of that, but I just think he meshed
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: well with Alan and connected well with his team. I
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: would bring him back absolutely. Of course, like you said,
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: they'll get an actual wide receiver one or get some
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: more top of the jet chart type dudes. I would
- 2:06:42Speaker 1: welcome him back. Everybody stopped talking about the Sabers. You're
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: gonna jinx it. I'm too afraid to even speak out
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: loud about the Buffalo Sabers, but yes, that's fun right now.
- 2:06:52Speaker 1: It's also the Thanos meme, right, like the Soltstone type
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: of deal, like, oh, the Sabers are good, like, but
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: what did it cost the Buffalo Bills? Yeah. I hope
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: you folks enjoyed this episode. I hope you were as
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: excited about Jim Lennard as I am. I hope you
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: feel more excited about Joe Brady than I am. Don't
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: hate it again. I think it's fine to love the
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: Brady Hire. I think it's fine to hate it. I
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: think it's fine to be in the middle. I personally
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: am underwhelmed. Like if ten is me being ecstatic and
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: one is me hating it and wanting nothing to do
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: with it, I'm probably at like a four or a
- 2:07:24Speaker 1: four and a half. I was a little earlier or
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: a little lower earlier in the day, but I got
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: a little better off. I appreciate that kindness in that
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: comment there, Jason, Thank you very much. Yeah. I've come
- 2:07:36Speaker 1: around on it a little bit. And when I say
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: come around, I mean like I've kind of got more
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: even keeled about it. But I'm underwhelmed, mainly because there
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: were other candidates that I preferred and I liked, but
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: you can do pros and cons and play Devil's advocate
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: to anyone that they interviewed and anyone that they were
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: going to interview and tear it apart or build it
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: up if you want. For me again, I think it's fine,
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: but I am underwhelmed for the reasons that we talked
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: about the meeting of this episode. But Jim Leonard ten
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: out of ten, twenty out of ten, I would absolutely
- 2:08:01Speaker 1: love that for why I broke down in this episode. Yeah,
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: I hope you folks enjoyed this episode. Sincerely. I put
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: a line in all these, especially this one, where I
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: get to talk about something I really enjoy and really
- 2:08:13Speaker 1: love in something that especially that's potential and maybe not
- 2:08:16Speaker 1: pie in the sky. It's real and there's real smoke
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: to it. Hopefully there's more fire to that smoke and
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: they bring Jim Leonard in. But yeah, hope you folks
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: enjoyed this episode. Follow me on Twitter Pro underscore underscore

- 2:08:33Speaker 1: class and the college football class. I know a lot
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: of people are wide receiver focused. I started putting out
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: some stuff on Casey CONCEPTCI Owned from Texas A and
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: M Joe. You don't get to make one pie jokes
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: because you stabbed me in the back and you didn't
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: get the one thing I told you to get when
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: you were here. You're a liar and a charlatan and
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: a deceiver and you don't get to make those jokes
- 2:09:02Speaker 1: because you're a liar and a deceiver and a charlatan.
- 2:09:05Speaker 1: But you're were the one that paid because you didn't
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: get the one pie. You're missing out more than one
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: pie is. But you stab me in the back, but
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: it's not your fault, but you kind of plunge that
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: knife right in between my shoulder plates. Yeah. Fair. Hope
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: you folks enjoy the rest of your Tuesday night. Thank
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: you very much to everybody who wrote with me live
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: on this episode. It was awesome to see everyone's questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,

- 2:09:43Speaker 1: the comments and in the chat and bringing up everything

- 2:10:32Speaker 1: smirk on my face, but your comments were super thought
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: provoking and the kindness of you shelling out like anybody
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: time anybody shells out any type of like actual dollars
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: for me to sit here and talk about the bills
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: and talk about football and something that I love it
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: always sincerely means a lotpo when someone continuously doesn't, it
- 2:10:48Speaker 1: gives like good chunks, like it's just super cool. So
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: thank you very much to Jason for that. Thanos Ron,

- 2:12:02Speaker 1: in the future, free agency, draft film and advance metrics,
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: breakdowns and evaluations. I'll have a ton of tape breakdowns
- 2:12:10Speaker 1: here on the channel as we go forward here on
- 2:12:13Speaker 1: college players and all that stuff. And yeah, I'll see
- 2:12:16Speaker 1: you when I see godspeed. Thank you everybody for all
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: the kind words in the chat. You guys know, I
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: don't bring them up when I'm solo because I think
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: it's weird to bring up positive stuff for myself and
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: pat myself on the back. But I see them, I
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: hear them, I appreciate it. Thank you very much, godspeed,
- 2:12:29Speaker 1: and as always go Bills.
